The optimal management of hemorrhagic cystitis (HC) in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HCT) is debated, both for early onset HC (EOHC) secondary to chemotherapy toxicity and BK Polyomavirus (BKPyV)-related HC, due to the lack of controlled trials, particularly referred to pediatric setting. Actually, clinical practice is mainly based on guidelines of the European Conference on Infections in Leukemia, 6th edition, which considers both adult and pediatric populations but concludes that, despite much progress in understanding the pathogenesis, epidemiology, and risk factors, this complication still represents a disabling unmet clinical need with limited prophylactic and therapeutic options. Additionally, the Guidelines of the American Society of Clinical Oncology define the management of chemotherapeutic toxicity independently from the patients’ population. A panel of experts belonging to the Hematopoietic Cell Transplant and Infectious Disease Working Group (WG) of Associazione Italiana di Emato-Oncologia Pediatrica (AIEOP) developed a consensus to define the best practices in prevention, diagnosis, and management of HC in pediatric HCT setting.

This study aimed to assess the effectiveness and safety of visual rehabilitation with microperimetric biofeedback in consolidating the benefits obtained, with the goal of reducing the need for repeated intravitreal injections (IVT). Specifically, the focus is on the eyes of patients with central vision loss treated with slow-release corticosteroid IVT following retinal venous thrombosis (RVO), aiming to enhance and maintain postoperative efficacy.Methods: This retrospective review involved the examination of 44 eyes affected by macular edema due to RVO associated with central vision loss. Patients were divided into two groups, with only one undergoing ten sessions of 10-minute visual rehabilitation with a microperimeter (MP-3 MBFT) after IVT over a period of 20 weeks.Results: All the treated patients demonstrated good tolerance to the procedure, with no reported complications. Background We investigated all-cause and epilepsy-related mortality in patients operated with resective epilepsy surgery and in non-operated patients with drug-resistant epilepsy. Our hypothesis was that patients who proceed to surgery have lower mortality over time compared with non-operated patients. Method Data from 1329 adults and children from the Swedish National Epilepsy Surgery Register and 666 patients with drug-resistant epilepsy who had undergone presurgical work-up but not been operated were analysed. The operated patients had follow-ups between 2 and 20 years. We used the Swedish Cause of Death Register to identify deaths. Autopsy reports were collected for patients with suspected sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression analyses were performed to identify predictors for mortality and SUDEP. Results SUDEP accounted for 30% of all deaths. Surgery was associated with lower all-cause mortality (HR 0.7, 95% CI 0.5 to 0.9), also when adjusted for age, sex and tonic-clonic seizures at inclusion. The benefit of surgery seemed to persist and possibly even increase after 15 years of follow-up. Risk factors of mortality for operated patients were persisting seizures and living alone. Of the operated patients, 37% had seizures, and these had a higher risk of mortality (HR 2.1, 95% CI 1.4 to 3.0) and SUDEP (HR 3.5, 95% CI 1.7 to 7.3) compared with patients with seizure freedom at last follow-up. Conclusions In this large population-based epilepsy surgery cohort, operated patients had a lower all-cause mortality compared with non-operated patients with drug-resistant epilepsy. Background: Microbial lipids have been emerging as a sustainable alternative to vegetable oils and animal fat to produce biodiesel and industrial relevant chemicals. The use of wastes for microbial processes can represent a way for upgrading low value feedstock to high value products, addressing one of the main goals of circular economy, the reduction of wastes by recycling. Two oleaginous yeasts, Rhodosporidiobolus azoricus and Cutaneotrichosporon oleaginosum, were used in this study to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach. Results: In this study wastes from industrial food processing, as pumpkin peels and syrup from candied fruits manufacture, were used for yeast cultivation and for lipids production. Evaluation of growth and sugar consumption revealed marked differences between the yeasts in capacity to utilize the main sugars present in the feedstock. In particular, we observed an unexpected limitation in glucose metabolism on mineral defined media by R. azoricus. Both species showed ability to grow and accumulate lipids on media exclusively composed by undiluted pumpkin peel hydrolysate, and R. azoricus was the best performing. By a two-stage process carried out in bioreactor, this species reached a biomass concentration of 45 g/L (dry weight) containing 55% of lipids, corresponding to a lipid concentration of 24 g/L, with a productivity of 0.26 g/L/h and yield of 0.24 g lipids per g of utilized sugar. Conclusions: Wastes from industrial food processing were sufficient to completely support yeast growth and to induce lipid accumulation. This study provides strong evidence that the concept of valorisation through the production of lipids from the metabolism of nutrients present in agro-industrial wastes by oleaginous yeasts is promising for implementation of biotechnological processes in a circular economy contest.

We explored the immune response before and after epileptic and psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES). Serum samples collected from patients with videoEEG-verified temporal or frontal lobe epilepsy (TLE or FLE) or TLE + PNES showed increased interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels in between seizures (interictally), compared to controls. Patients with PNES had no increase in IL-6. The IL-6 levels increased transiently even further within hours after a seizure (postictally) in TLE but not in FLE patients. The postictal to interictal ratio of additionally five immune factors were also increased in TLE patients only. We conclude that immune factors have the potential to be future biomarkers for epileptic seizures and that the heterogeneity among different epileptic and non-epileptic seizures may be disclosed in peripheral blood sampling independent of co-morbidities.

Phytic acid is an anti-nutritional compound able to chelate proteins and ions. For this reason, the food industry is looking for a convenient method which allows its degradation. Phytases are a class of enzymes that catalyze the degradation of phytic acid and are used as additives in feed-related industrial processes. Due to their industrial importance, our goal was to identify new activities that exhibit best performances in terms of tolerance to high temperature and acidic pH. As a result of an initial screening on 21 yeast species, we focused our attention on phytases found in Cyberlindnera jadinii, Kluyveromyces marxianus, and Torulaspora delbrueckeii. In particular, C. jadinii showed the highest secreted and cell-bound activity, with optimum of temperature and pH at 50°C and 4.5, respectively. These characteristics suggest that this enzyme could be successfully used for feed as well as for food-related industrial applications.

Background: Previous studies have shown that children and adolescents with COVID-19 generally have mild disease. Children and adolescents with cancer, however, can have severe disease when infected with respiratory viruses. In this study, we aimed to understand the clinical course and outcomes of SARS-CoV-2 infection in children and adolescents with cancer. Methods: We did a cohort study with data from 131 institutions in 45 countries. We created the Global Registry of COVID-19 in Childhood Cancer to capture de-identified data pertaining to laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infections in children and adolescents (<19 years) with cancer or having received a haematopoietic stem-cell transplantation. There were no centre-specific exclusion criteria. The registry was disseminated through professional networks through email and conferences and health-care providers were invited to submit all qualifying cases. Data for demographics, oncological diagnosis, clinical course, and cancer therapy details were collected. Primary outcomes were disease severity and modification to cancer-directed therapy. The registry remains open to data collection. Findings: Of 1520 submitted episodes, 1500 patients were included in the study between April 15, 2020, and Feb 1, 2021. 1319 patients had complete 30-day follow-up. 259 (19·9%) of 1301 patients had a severe or critical infection, and 50 (3·8%) of 1319 died with the cause attributed to COVID-19 infection. Modifications to cancer-directed therapy occurred in 609 (55·8%) of 1092 patients receiving active oncological treatment. Multivariable analysis revealed several factors associated with severe or critical illness, including World Bank low-income or lower-middle-income (odds ratio [OR] 5·8 [95% CI 3·8–8·8]; p<0·0001) and upper-middle-income (1·6 [1·2–2·2]; p=0·0024) country status; age 15–18 years (1·6 [1·1–2·2]; p=0·013); absolute lymphocyte count of 300 or less cells per mm3 (2·5 [1·8–3·4]; p<0·0001), absolute neutrophil count

Background: A growing body of observational evidence supports the value of ceftazidime-avibactam (CAZ-AVI) in managing infections caused by carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed observational data on use and outcomes of CAZ-AVI therapy for infections caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase-producing K. pneumoniae (KPC-Kp) strains. Multivariate regression analysis was used to identify variables independently associated with 30-day mortality. Results were adjusted for propensity score for receipt of CAZ-AVI combination regimens versus CAZ-AVI monotherapy. Results: The cohort comprised 577 adults with bloodstream infections (n = 391) or nonbacteremic infections involving mainly the urinary tract, lower respiratory tract, and intra-abdominal structures. All received treatment with CAZ-AVI alone (n = 165) or with ≥1 other active antimicrobials (n = 412). The all-cause mortality rate 30 days after infection onset was 25% (146/577). There was no significant difference in mortality between patients managed with CAZ-AVI alone and those treated with combination regimens (26.1% vs 25.0%, P =. 79). In multivariate analysis, mortality was positively associated with presence at infection onset of septic shock (P =. 002), neutropenia (P <. 001), or an INCREMENT score ≥8 (P =. 01); with lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) (P =. 04); and with CAZ-AVI dose adjustment for renal function (P =. 01). Mortality was negatively associated with CAZ-AVI administration by prolonged infusion (P =. 006). All associations remained significant after propensity score adjustment. Conclusions: CAZ-AVI is an important option for treating serious KPC-Kp infections, even when used alone. Further study is needed to explore the drug's seemingly more limited efficacy in LRTIs and potential survival benefits of prolonging CAZ-AVI infusions to ≥3 hours.

Currently, about 12ĝ€¯%-13ĝ€¯% of High Mountain Asia's glacier area is debris-covered, which alters its surface mass balance. However, in regional-scale modelling approaches, debris-covered glaciers are typically treated as clean-ice glaciers, leading to a bias when modelling their future evolution. Here, we present a new approach for modelling debris area and thickness evolution, applicable from single glaciers to the global scale. We derive a parameterization and implement it as a module into the Global Glacier Evolution Model (GloGEMflow), a combined mass-balance ice-flow model. The module is initialized with both glacier-specific observations of the debris' spatial distribution and estimates of debris thickness. These data sets account for the fact that debris can either enhance or reduce surface melt depending on thickness. Our model approach also enables representing the spatiotemporal evolution of debris extent and thickness. We calibrate and evaluate the module on a selected subset of glaciers and apply GloGEMflow using different climate scenarios to project the future evolution of all glaciers in High Mountain Asia until 2100. Explicitly accounting for debris cover has only a minor effect on the projected mass loss, which is in line with previous projections. Despite this small effect, we argue that the improved process representation is of added value when aiming at capturing intra-glacier scales, i.e. spatial mass-balance distribution. Depending on the climate scenario, the mean debris-cover fraction is expected to increase, while mean debris thickness is projected to show only minor changes, although large local thickening is expected. To isolate the influence of explicitly accounting for supraglacial debris cover, we re-compute glacier evolution without the debris-cover module. We show that glacier geometry, area, volume, and flow velocity evolve differently, especially at the level of individual glaciers. The complement system constitutes a crucial part of the innate immunity, mediating opsonization, lysis, inflammation, and elimination of potential pathogens. In general, there is an increased activity of the complement system during pregnancy, which is essential for maintaining the host's defense and fetal survival. Unbalanced or excessive activation of the complement system in the placenta is associated with pregnancy complications, such as miscarriage, preeclampsia, and premature birth. Nonetheless, the actual clinical value of monitoring the activation of the complement system during pregnancy remains to be investigated. Unfortunately, normal reference values specifically for pregnant women are missing, and for umbilical cord blood (UCB), data on complement protein levels are scarce. Herein, complement protein analyses (C1q, C3, C4, C3d levels, and C3d/C3 ratio) were performed in plasma samples from 100 healthy, non-medicated and non-smoking pregnant women, collected during different trimesters and at the time of delivery. In addition, UCB was collected at all deliveries. Maternal plasma C1q and C3d/C3 ratio showed the highest mean values during the first trimester, whereas C3, C4, and C3d had rising values until delivery. We observed low levels of C1q and C4 as well as increased C3d and C3d/C3 ratio, particularly during the first trimester, as a sign of complement activation in some women. However, the reference limits of complement analyses applied for the general population appeared appropriate for the majority of the samples. As expected, the mean complement concentrations in UCB were much lower than in maternal plasma, due to the immature complement system in neonates.

Neuropsychiatric symptoms have been reported in patients receiving dolutegravir, a known inhibitor of the renal and neuronal-expressed organic anion transporter 2 (encoded by SLC22A2 gene). The effect of the genetic variant SLC22A2 808C>A on dolutegravir discontinuation was assessed and analyzed by real-time PCR. We enrolled 627 participants: CA/AA carriers showed a higher prevalence of pre-existing psychiatric comorbidities and use of antidepressants. After 27.9 months, 108 participants discontinued dolutegravir, 64 for neuropsychiatric symptoms. Patients with pre-existing psychiatric comorbidities were at higher risk of dolutegravir discontinuation, while patients carrying the SLC22A2 CA/AA genotype were not. Combining the two variables, an opposite effect of SLC22A2 variants according to pre-existing psychiatric disorders was observed. Using multivariate Cox models, the combined variable pre-existing psychiatric comorbidities/SLC22A2 variants and the use of non-tenofovir alafenamide containing antiretroviral regimens were predictors of dolutegravir discontinuation for neuropsychiatric symptoms. Within 30 days, the majority of participants had a complete resolution of symptoms (61.8%), while 32.7% and 5.5% had partial or no change after dolutegravir discontinuation, respectively. Discontinuation of dolutegravir for neuropsychiatric symptoms was not uncommon and more frequent in participants with pre-existing psychiatric disorders. We described an interaction between SLC22A2 genetic variant and psychiatric comorbidities. In 38.2% of patients, a complete neuropsychiatric symptoms resolution was not observed after dolutegravir discontinuation suggesting the involvement of additional factors.

Die Analyse der experimentellen Daten offenbart den bosonischen Charakter von Photonen, sowie die geometrische Phase, welche mit dem physischen Austausch zweier Quantenzustände assoziiert ist. Nach dieser Feststellung der Austauschsymmetrie von Zweiphotonenzuständen folgt die Ausarbeitung der Theorie über die Propagation von Mehrphotonenzuständen in Multiportsystemen. Dabei offenbaren sich hoch-dimensionale, synthetische, gekoppelte Strukturen die sich aus der Mehrphotonenanregung von diskreten Systemen ergeben. Basierend auf diesen Resultaten wird eine konkrete Anwendung der Theorie im Kontext von nicht-hermitischen Systemen formuliert. Dabei ergeben sich sogenannte “exceptional points” höherer Ordnung, welche Anwendungen im Bereich der Sensorik finden und ferner nur im Raum der Photonenanzahlzustände von diskreten Systemen realisiert werden können. Neben der Sensorik ist der Transport von Lichtzuständen ein wichtiger Aspekt in der Verarbeitung von Quanteninformationen. In dieser Hinsicht werden hier Photonische Topologische Isolatoren untersucht, welche eine rückstreuungsfreie Propagation entlang ihrer Ränder erlauben. We begin by developing the theoretical description of an interferometer, which is designed to measure the particle exchange phase of photons. The analysis of the experimental data reveals the bosonic nature of photons, as well as the geometric phase associated with the physical exchange of the quantum states of two photons. Having established the exchange symmetry of two-photon states, we proceed to develop the theory of multi-photon states propagating in multi-port systems. We unveil the high- dimensional synthetic coupled structures that arise via the multi-photon excitation of discrete systems. Using these results, we formulate an application of the theory in the context of non-hermitian systems. We find so-called high-order exceptional points, which find applications in sensing and can only be achieved in the photon-number space of discrete systems. Apart from sensing, an important ingredient for the processing of quantum information is the transport of light states. In this regard, we consider photonic topological insulators, which allow the back-scattering-free propagation along their edges. We show that partially coherent light, Gaussian- as well as non-Gaussian two-photon entangled states can enjoy such a topological protection, provided that the initial excitations fit inside a well defined topological window of protection, which strengthens the “classical” band-gap protection criterion.

Currently, about 12ĝ€¯%-13ĝ€¯% of High Mountain Asia's glacier area is debris-covered, which alters its surface mass balance. However, in regional-scale modelling approaches, debris-covered glaciers are typically treated as clean-ice glaciers, leading to a bias when modelling their future evolution. Here, we present a new approach for modelling debris area and thickness evolution, applicable from single glaciers to the global scale. We derive a parameterization and implement it as a module into the Global Glacier Evolution Model (GloGEMflow), a combined mass-balance ice-flow model. The module is initialized with both glacier-specific observations of the debris' spatial distribution and estimates of debris thickness. These data sets account for the fact that debris can either enhance or reduce surface melt depending on thickness. Our model approach also enables representing the spatiotemporal evolution of debris extent and thickness. We calibrate and evaluate the module on a selected subset of glaciers and apply GloGEMflow using different climate scenarios to project the future evolution of all glaciers in High Mountain Asia until 2100. Explicitly accounting for debris cover has only a minor effect on the projected mass loss, which is in line with previous projections. Despite this small effect, we argue that the improved process representation is of added value when aiming at capturing intra-glacier scales, i.e. spatial mass-balance distribution. Depending on the climate scenario, the mean debris-cover fraction is expected to increase, while mean debris thickness is projected to show only minor changes, although large local thickening is expected. To isolate the influence of explicitly accounting for supraglacial debris cover, we re-compute glacier evolution without the debris-cover module. We show that glacier geometry, area, volume, and flow velocity evolve differently, especially at the level of individual glaciers. To isolate the influence of explicitly accounting for supraglacial debris cover, we re-compute glacier evolution without the debris-cover module. La tesis realiza un estudio comparado internacional sobre el Aprendizaje Integrado de Contenidos y Lenguas Extranjeras (AICLE; en inglés Content and Language Integrated Learning, CLIL) basado en la impartición de diversas materias de una etapa educativa en inglés. El estudio se lleva a cabo en centros educativos de Italia, España y Turquía. El diseño de investigación utiliza un enfoque mixto cualtitativo-cualitativo, con cuestionarios y entrevistas en profundidad como herramientas de recolección de datos. Los datos de la investigación muestran la importancia de la colaboración del profesorado en cuanto a la creación de proyectos, el diseño de materiales, la planificación de las clases y la puesta en común de todos los aspectos del proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje para una mejor implementación de la práctica AICLE. Al mismo tiempo, llama la atención sobre la deficiencia de oportunidades de formación para los directores, los profesores y los coordinadores. Destaca el conocimiento adecuado que tiene el personal docente, gracias a su esfuerzo personal para su crecimiento profesional., The thesis carries out an international comparative study on Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) based on the teaching of various subjects of an educational stage in English. The study is carried out in schools in Italy, Spain and Turkey. The research design uses a mixed qualitative-qualitative approach, with questionnaires and in-depth interviews as data collection tools. The research data show the importance of teacher collaboration in terms of project creation, materials design, lesson planning and sharing of all aspects of the teaching-learning process for a better implementation of CLIL practice. At the same time, it draws attention to the deficiency of training opportunities for head teachers, teachers and coordinators. It highlights the adequate knowledge that teachers have through their personal efforts for their professional growth.

Aim: Our aim was to describe the outcomes of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) associated with COVID-19. Methods: This national, population-based, longitudinal, multicentre study used Swedish data that were prospectively collected between 1 December 2020 and 31 May 2021. All patients met the World Health Organization criteria for MIS-C. The outcomes 2 and 8 weeks after diagnosis are presented, and follow-up protocols are suggested. Results: We identified 152 cases, and 133 (87%) participated. When followed up 2 weeks after MIS-C was diagnosed, 43% of the 119 patients had abnormal results, including complete blood cell counts, platelet counts, albumin levels, electrocardiograms and echocardiograms. After 8 weeks, 36% of 89 had an abnormal patient history, but clinical findings were uncommon. Echocardiogram results were abnormal in 5% of 67, and the most common complaint was fatigue. Older children and those who received intensive care were more likely to report symptoms and have abnormal cardiac results. Conclusion: More than a third (36%) of the patients had persistent symptoms 8 weeks after MIS-C, and 5% had abnormal echocardiograms. Older age and higher levels of initial care appeared to be risk factors. Structured follow-up visits are important after MIS-C.

Glaciers around the world are shrinking rapidly and will continue to do so in the next decades. Anticipating the consequences resulting from such glacier changes is key to design and implement adequate mitigation measures. Here, we focus on the future evolution of potential ice-dammed and supraglacial lakes in High Mountain Asia, as such lakes are responsible for the majority of glacier lake outburst floods in the region. We identify 11,129 potential lakes at present, with a total maximum volume of 2070 million m3. We find a strong correlation between large modelled lakes and historical outburst floods. By accounting for the evolution of glaciers under different climate change mitigation measures, we project that the number of potential ice-dammed lakes could increase by between 15 and 18% until 2080, with a concomitant 45–55% increase in their volume. Objectives: This is a protocol for a Cochrane Review (intervention). The objectives are as follows:. To assess the benefits and harms of TNF inhibitors in comparison with placebo and other treatment strategies in adult patients affected by psoriatic arthritis.

Background: The Italian Society of Infectious and Tropical Diseases performed a survey on the application of guidelines for the management of persons living with HIV (PLWH), to evaluate current practice and the yield of screening for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in newly-diagnosed PLWH; in addition, the offer of preventive therapy to LTBI individuals and the completion rate were analysed. Materials and methods: Newly-diagnosed PLWH in nine centres were evaluated retrospectively (2016/2017) using binary and multinomial logistic regression to identify factors associated with LTBI diagnostic screening and QuantiFERON (QFT) results. Results: Of 801 patients evaluated, 774 were studied after excluding active TB. LTBI tests were performed in 65.5%. Prescription of an LTBI test was associated with being foreign-born (odds ratio (OR) 3.19, p < 0.001), older (for 10-year increments, OR 1.22, p = 0.034), and having a CD4 count <100 cells/mm3 vs ≥500 cells/mm3 (OR 2.30, p = 0.044). LTBI was diagnosed in 6.5% of 495 patients evaluated by QFT. Positive results were associated with being foreign-born (relative risk ratio (RRR) 30.82, p < 0.001), older (for 10-year increments, RRR 1.78, p = 0.003), and having a high CD4 count (for 100 cells/mm3 increments, RRR 1.26, p < 0.003). Sixteen LTBI individuals started TB preventive therapy and eight completed it. Conclusions: LTBI screening is inconsistently performed in newly-diagnosed PLWH. Furthermore, TB preventive therapy is not offered to all LTBI individuals and compliance is poor.

The use of seawater and marine microorganisms can represent a sustainable alternative to avoid large consumption of freshwater performing industrial bioprocesses. Debaryomyces hansenii, which is a known halotolerant yeast, possess metabolic traits appealing for developing such processes. For this purpose, we studied salt stress exposure of two D. hansenii strains isolated from marine fauna. We found that the presence of sea salts during the cultivation results in a slight decrease of biomass yields. Nevertheless, higher concentration of NaCl (2 M) negatively affects other growth parameters, like growth rate and glucose consumption rate. To maintain an isosmotic condition, the cells accumulate glycerol as compatible solute. Flow cytometry analysis revealed that the osmotic adaptation causes a reduced cellular permeability to cell-permeant dye SYBR Green I. We demonstrate that this fast and reversible phenomenon is correlated to the induction of membrane depolarization, and occurred even in presence of high concentration of sorbitol. The decrease of membrane permeability induced by osmotic stress confers to D. hansenii resistance to cationic drugs like Hygromycin B. In addition, we describe that also in Saccharomyces cerevisiae the exposure to hyper-osmotic conditions induced membrane depolarization and reduced the membrane permeability. These aspects are very relevant for the optimization of industrial bioprocesses, as in the case of fermentations and bioconversions carried out by using media/buffers containing high nutrients/salts concentrations. Indeed, an efficient transport of molecules (nutrients, substrates, and products) is the prerequisite for an efficient cellular performance, and ultimately for the efficiency of the industrial process.

A screening among marine yeasts was carried out for nitrile hydrolyzing activity. Meyerozyma guilliermondii LM2 (UBOCC-A-214008) was able to efficiently grow on benzonitrile and cyclohexanecarbonitrile (CECN) as sole nitrogen sources. A two-step one-pot method for obtaining cells of M. guilliermondii LM2 (UBOCC-A-214008) endowed with high nitrilase activity was established; the resulting whole cells converted different nitriles with high molar conversions and showed interesting enantioselectivity toward racemic substrates. Nitrilase from M. guilliermondii LM2 (UBOCC-A-214008) displayed high activity on aromatic substrates, but also arylaliphatic and aliphatic substrates were accepted. Salt-resistant M. guilliermondii LM2 (UBOCC-A-214008) was used in media with different salinity, being highly active up to 1.5 M NaCl concentration. Finally, hydrolysis of nitriles was efficiently performed using a bioprocess (yeast growth and biotransformation with resting cells) entirely carried out in seawater.

With the Paris Agreement, the urgency of limiting ongoing anthropogenic climate change has been recognised. More recent discussions have focused on the difference of limiting the increase in global average temperatures below 1.0, 1.5, or 2.0g C compared to preindustrial levels. Here, we assess the impacts that such different scenarios would have on both the future evolution of glaciers in the European Alps and the water resources they provide. Our results show that even half-degree differences in global temperature targets have important implications for the changes predicted until 2100, and that-for the most optimistic scenarios-glaciers might start to partially recover, owing to possibly decreasing temperatures after the end of the 21st century., Mathematical Geodesy and Positioning

Due to climate change, worldwide glaciers are rapidly declining. The trend will continue into the future, with consequences for sea level, water availability and tourism. Here, we assess the future evolution of all glaciers in Scandinavia and Iceland until 2100 using the coupled surface mass-balance ice-flow model GloGEMflow. The model is initialised with three distinct past climate data products (E-OBS, ERA-I, ERA-5), while future climate is prescribed by both global and regional climate models (GCMs and RCMs), in order to analyze their impact on glacier evolution. By 2100, we project Scandinavian glaciers to lose between 67 ± 18% and 90 ± 7% of their present-day (2018) volume under a low (RCP2.6) and a high (RCP8.5) emission scenario, respectively. Over the same period, losses for Icelandic glaciers are projected to be between 43 ± 11% (RCP2.6) and 85 ± 7% (RCP8.5). The projected evolution is only little impacted by both the choice of climate data products used in the past and the spatial resolution of the future climate projections, with differences in the ice volume remaining by 2100 of 7 and 5%, respectively. Pathophysiological consequences of focal non-convulsive status epilepticus (fNCSE) have been difficult to demonstrate in humans. In rats fNCSE pathology has been identified in the eyes. Here we evaluated the use of high-resolution 7 T structural T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and 9.4 T diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) for detecting hippocampal fNCSE-induced retinal pathology ex vivo in mice. Seven weeks post-fNCSE, increased number of Iba1+ microglia were evident in the retina ipsilateral to the hemisphere with fNCSE, and morphologically more activated microglia were found in both ipsi- and contralateral retina compared to non-stimulated control mice. T1-weighted intensity measurements of the contralateral retina showed a minor increase within the outer nuclear and plexiform layers of the lateral retina. T1-weighted measurements were not performed in the ipsilateral retina due to technical difficulties. DTI fractional anisotropy(FA) values were discretely altered in the lateral part of the ipsilateral retina and unaltered in the contralateral retina. No changes were observed in the distal part of the optic nerve. The sensitivity of both imaging techniques for identifying larger retinal alteration was confirmed ex vivo in retinitis pigmentosa mice where a substantial neurodegeneration of the outer retinal layers is evident. With MR imaging a 50 % decrease in DTI FA values and significantly thinner retina in T1-weighted images were detected. We conclude that retinal pathology after fNCSE in mice is subtle and present bilaterally. High-resolution T1-weighted MRI and DTI independently did not detect the entire pathological retinal changes after fNCSE, but the combination of the two techniques indicated minor patchy structural changes.
