The situation for the environment is in many ways dire. However, amidst all the negative environmental developments it is easy to neglect the successes that have actually happened. With the aim of better understanding what factors facilitated such a success this thesis analyses one such case, namely emissions of dioxins and chlorinated waste from the pulp and paper industry in Sweden. Dioxins were discovered in the wastewater from mills in the mid-1980s and in the span of just a few years emissions were drastically reduced to the point of becoming a non-issue. Using a single case study design this thesis analysis this case using middle-range theorizations of the Treadmill of Production and Ecological Modernization Theory, both prominent theories from environmental sociology most frequently thought of as macro-theories. Two methods were utilized to examine the case: expert interviews, and qualitative content analysis of newspaper articles. The findings suggest that regulation, and the regulatory style of Sweden, which eschews national regulation in lieu of actor-by-actor regulation, played important roles in creating the conditions for transitioning and as drivers in the early stages of transitioning, which is also supported by previous research on the topic. Regulation as a main driver was later replaced by consumer pressure, both in Sweden and in export markets, which demanded chlorine-free products in part based on fears of dioxin contamination of the products. The power of citizens was found to have been crucial in reaching a positive outcome., The situation for the environment is in many ways dire. Hoping that there are potential lessons to be learned from how earlier environmental problems have been more or less solved this project examines one such case of success. The problem selected as the focus of this research project is that of dioxins and chlorinated waste emissions from the pulp and paper industry in Sweden. Dioxin is the group name of a family of environmental toxins that are byproducts of certain industrial processes, such as the chlorine-bleaching of pulp and paper; and chlorinated waste is a measurement of the chlorine-related waste emitted which is essentially a proxy for dioxins as this is both difficult and expensive to measure. This problem was discovered in the mid-1980s and in the span of only a few years, emissions of dioxins and of chlorinated waste in general from the pulp and paper industry were reduced to such a degree that it was turned into a non-issue. In other words, the problem had successfully been solved. This project aims to gain an in-depth understanding of exactly how this problem was solved by looking at underlying social, economic, and political factors. The approach to this was by conducting interviews with experts from different perspectives of the matter who were actively working on the issue when it was a hot topic, and analyzing newspaper articles also from the relevant time frame. After analyzing this material the results show that the unique regulatory style of Sweden, where each pulp mill was given its own emission permits instead of country-wide limits, was very important in creating the conditions that would foster change. The main goal of this work, the second in a three-paper series, is to test the impact of a methodological improvement in measuring the magnification bias signal on a sample of submillimeter galaxies and its implications for constraining cosmological parameters. The analysis considers the angular cross-correlation function between a foreground sample of GAMA galaxies ($0.2

The measurement of the cross-correlation function is crucial to assess magnification bias in galaxy surveys. Previous works used mini-tile subsampling, but accurately determining the integral constraint (IC) correction for unbiased estimation is challenging due to various factors. We present a new methodology for estimating the cross-correlation function, utilizing full field area and reducing statistical uncertainty. Covariance matrices were estimated by dividing each field into at least five patches using a k-mean clustering algorithm. Robustness was assessed by comparing spectroscopic and photometric lens samples, yielding compatible results. Cross-correlation and auto-correlation analyses in the GAMA fields revealed a stronger signal in GAMA15, likely due to rare large-scale structure combinations. Our findings highlight the robustness of the new methodology and suggest sample-specific effects. Enhanced perioperative care protocols become the standard of care in elective surgery with a significant improvement in patients' outcome. The key element of the enhanced perioperative care protocol is the multimodal and interdisciplinary approach targeted to the patient, focused on a holistic approach to reduce surgical stress and improve perioperative recovery. Enhanced perioperative care in emergency general surgery is still a debated topic with little evidence available. The present position paper illustrates the existing evidence about perioperative care in emergency surgery patients with a focus on each perioperative intervention in the preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative phase. For each item was proposed and approved a statement by the WSES collaborative group.

The inner hundred parsecs of the Milky Way hosts the nearest supermassive black hole, largest reservoir of dense gas, greatest stellar density, hundreds of massive main and post main sequence stars, and the highest volume density of supernovae in the Galaxy. As the nearest environment in which it is possible to simultaneously observe many of the extreme processes shaping the Universe, it is one of the most well-studied regions in astrophysics. Due to its proximity, we can study the center of our Galaxy on scales down to a few hundred AU, a hundred times better than in similar Local Group galaxies and thousands of times better than in the nearest active galaxies. The Galactic Center (GC) is therefore of outstanding astrophysical interest. However, in spite of intense observational work over the past decades, there are still fundamental things unknown about the GC. JWST has the unique capability to provide us with the necessary, game-changing data. In this White Paper, we advocate for a JWST NIRCam survey that aims at solving central questions, that we have identified as a community: i) the 3D structure and kinematics of gas and stars; ii) ancient star formation and its relation with the overall history of the Milky Way, as well as recent star formation and its implications for the overall energetics of our galaxy's nucleus; and iii) the (non-)universality of star formation and the stellar initial mass function. We advocate for a large-area, multi-epoch, multi-wavelength NIRCam survey of the inner 100\,pc of the Galaxy in the form of a Treasury GO JWST Large Program that is open to the community. We describe how this survey will derive the physical and kinematic properties of ~10,000,000 stars, how this will solve the key unknowns and provide a valuable resource for the community with long-lasting legacy value., Comment: This White Paper will be updated when required (e.g. new authors joining, editing of content)

In this white paper, we review five top considerations for selecting locations of the fields of the Roman High-latitude Time Domain Survey. Based on these considerations, we recommend Akari Deep Field South (ADFS)/Euclid Deep Field South (EDFS) in the Southern Hemisphere has it avoids bright stars, has minimal Milky Way dust, is in Roman Continuous viewing zone, overlaps with multiple past and future surveys, and minimal zodiacal background variation. In the North, Extended Groth Strip (EGS) is good except for its zodiacal variation and Supernova/Acceleration Probe North (SNAP-N) and European Large Area Infrared Space Observatory Survey-North 1 (ELAIS N-1) are good except for their synergistic archival data., Comment: Submitted to the Roman Core Community Survey call for white papers

Introduction: In allergic asthma patients, one of the more common phenotypes might benefit from allergen immunotherapy (AIT) as add-on intervention to pharmacological treatment. AIT is a treatment with disease-modifying modalities, the evidence for efficacy is based on controlled clinical trials following standardized endpoint measures. However, so far there is a lack of a consensus for asthma endpoints in AIT trials. The aim of a task force (TF) of the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) is evaluating several outcome measures for AIT in allergic asthma. Methods: The following domains of outcome measures in asthmatic patients have been evaluated for this position paper (PP): (i) exacerbation rate, (ii) lung function, (iii) ICS withdrawal, (iv) symptoms and rescue medication use, (v) questionnaires (PROMS), (vi) bronchial/nasal provocation, (vii) allergen exposure chambers (AEC) and (viii) biomarkers. Results: Exacerbation rate can be used as a reliable objective primary outcome; however, there is limited evidence due to different definitions of exacerbation. The time after ICS withdrawal to first exacerbation is considered a primary outcome measure. Besides, the advantages and disadvantages and clinical implications of further domains of asthma endpoints in AIT trials are elaborated in this PP. Conclusion: This EAACI-PP aims to highlight important aspects of current asthma measures by critically evaluating their applicability for controlled trials of AIT.

Many countries are facing an aging population. As people live longer, surgeons face the prospect of operating on increasingly older patients. Traditional teaching is that with older age, these patients face an increased risk of mortality and morbidity, even to a level deemed too prohibitive for surgery. However, this is not always true. An active 90-year-old patient can be much fitter than an overweight, sedentary 65-year-old patient with comorbidities. Recent literature shows that frailty—an age-related cumulative decline in multiple physiological systems, is therefore a better predictor of mortality and morbidity than chronological age alone. Despite recognition of frailty as an important tool in identifying vulnerable surgical patients, many surgeons still shun objective tools. The aim of this position paper was to perform a review of the existing literature and to provide recommendations on emergency laparotomy and in frail patients. This position paper was reviewed by an international expert panel composed of 37 experts who were asked to critically revise the manuscript and position statements. The position paper was conducted according to the WSES methodology. We shall present the derived statements upon which a consensus was reached, specifying the quality of the supporting evidence and suggesting future research directions.

In microfluidics, typical laboratory processes can be condensed to a miniature device. This reduces analysis time and required volumes of samples and reagents, increases mobility and flexibility, and is cost effective. In this work, the environmental impacts of three microfluidic devices for glucose detection are assessed using a comparative life cycle assessment (LCA) from cradle-to-grave. The three devices are a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) device manufactured through soft lithography, a paper device manufactured through wax stamping, and a polylactic acid (PLA) device manufactured through 3D printing. The environmental impacts are determined for two manufacturing scenarios: on laboratory-scale and commercial-scale. The functional unit is 1 act of glucose detection performed on a human sample using 1 microfluidic glucose detection device. Assuming laboratory-scale manufacturing, the paper device has the lowest environmental impacts, whereas the PLA device has the highest impact. The main contributing processes are those pertaining to the devices' manufacture. For the PDMS device, these are the processes for soft lithography, for the paper device it is the paraffin use, while for the PLA device it is the 3D printing. Assuming commercial-scale manufacturing, the PLA device has the lowest environmental impact, whereas the PDMS device has the highest impact. This scenario was modelled by improving efficiencies in the manufacturing of the PDMS and paper device, and substituting 3D printing for injection moulding for the PLA device. To reduce the devices' environmental impacts, a general recommendation is to transition to an electricity mix based on renewables rather than fossil fuels. For the PDMS device, a recommendation is to redesign the device such that the user can apply reagents before use, thereby avoiding emissions by cutting out a need for refrigeration, which is present in the current design. Artificial Intelligence in higher education (AIED) is becoming a more important research area with increasing developments and application of AI within the wider society. However, as yet AI based tools have not been widely adopted in higher education. As a result there is a lack of sound evidence available on the pedagogical impact of AI for learning and teaching. This conceptual paper thus seeks to bridge the gap and addresses the following question: is artificial intelligence really the new big thing that will revolutionise learning and teaching in higher education? Adopting the technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) framework and the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) as the theoretical foundations, we argue that Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, at least in their current state of development, do not afford any real new advances for pedagogy in higher education. This is mainly because there does not seem to be valid evidence as to how the use of AI technologies and applications has helped students improve learning, and/or helped tutors make effective pedagogical changes. In addition, the pedagogical affordances of AI have not yet been clearly defined. The challenges that the higher education sector is currently experiencing relating to AI adoption are discussed at three hierarchical levels, namely national, institutional and personal levels. The paper ends with recommendations with regard to accelerating AI use in universities. This includes developing dedicated AI adoption strategies at the institutional level, updating the existing technology infrastructure and up-skilling academic tutors for AI.

The chemical analysis of bamboo species, namely Dendrocalamusasper or popular named as BuluhBetong has been evaluated. From the age of 3 years, this species shows different chemical properties related to holocellulose,  cellulose, solvent extraction, alkali solubility, lignin, hot water solubility, cold water solubility, ash, silica and pentosan. Holocellulose content of about 60.48% to 64.75%,  cellulose content of about 35.73% to 43.14%, for all bamboo segments indicated as a suitable material for pulp and papermaking. Low level of solvent extractive of about 5.09% to 6.23%, hot water soluble of about 6.29% 9.49% and cold water soluble of about 9.35% to 10.49% also produced the content that cannot interfere with the paper-making process. In addition, the low ash and silica content for all sections of bamboo will indicate a normal alkali consumption and give little challenge to the operational process. High pentosan content in the middle and top sections between 16.32% and 20.88% and lignin content of around 39.27% to 32.51% also promise little challenge for pulping as compared to the bottom section. Therefore, based on the overall findings, the middle section, and the top section had an advantage over the bottom section. As a result, the middle and top sections are best used as a new material in pulp and paper making process.

The INDDEX24 Dietary Assessment Platform (INDDEX24) was developed to facilitate the collection of 24-h dietary recall (24HR) data. Alongside validation studies in Viet Nam and Burkina Faso in 2019-2020, we conducted activity-based costing studies to estimate the cost of conducting a 24HR among women of reproductive age using INDDEX24 compared with the pen-and-paper interview (PAPI) approach. We also modelled alternative scenarios in which: (1) 25-75 % of dietary reference data were borrowed from the INDDEX24 Global Food Matters Database (FMDB); (2) all study personnel were locally based and (3) national-scale surveys. In the primary analysis, in Viet Nam, the 24HR cost US $111 004 ($755/respondent, n 147) using INDDEX24 and $120 483 ($820/respondent, n 147) using PAPI. In Burkina Faso, the 24HR cost $78 105 ($539/respondent, n 145) using INDDEX24 and $79 465 ($544/respondent, n 146) using PAPI. In modelled scenarios, borrowing dietary reference data from the FMDB decreased the cost of INDDEX24 by 17-34 % (Viet Nam) and 5-15 % (Burkina Faso). With all locally based personnel, INDDEX24 cost more than PAPI ($498 v. $448 per respondent in Viet Nam and $456 v. $410 in Burkina Faso). However, at national scales (n 4376, Viet Nam; n 6500, Burkina Faso) using all locally based personnel, INDDEX24 was more cost-efficient ($109 v. $137 per respondent in Viet Nam and $123 v. $148 in Burkina Faso). In two countries and under most circumstances, INDDEX24 was less expensive than PAPI. Higher INDDEX24 survey preparation costs (including purchasing equipment) were more than offset by higher PAPI data entry, cleaning and processing costs. INDDEX24 may facilitate cost-efficient dietary data collection.

The paper attempts to introduce Polish readers to a theory presented by the American literary scholar Margaret Freeman in her recent book, The Poem as Icon (2020). In the monograph, Freeman analyzes ways in which the reader experiences reality – both visible and invisible – through poetry. Her fundamental assumption is that the relevant research question is not what literary art is, but how it comes to be what it is. The purpose of the present paper is to show that, although written by a literary scholar, the monograph corresponds to general tendencies that can be seen in contemporary humanities: in cognitive linguistics (in particular, Leonard Talmy’s theory of -ception and George Lakoff’s cognitive theory of metaphor), in the theory of linguistic picture of the world, or in discourse analysis. All these disciplines are based upon the assumption that the essence of the world is continuous change, and they investigate linguistic expressions in the process of becoming, which is relative to factors traditionally considered as non-linguistic. Freeman’s poetic cognition has a wide scope: it embraces cognitive processes of human mind, but also bodily and emotive cognition. Thus poetic cognition is embodied, and in Freemen’s theory a “poem-as-icon” ultimately becomes an illusion of the “here-and-now” direst experience., The paper attempts to introduce Polish readers to a theory presented by the American literary scholar Margaret Freeman in her recent book, The Poem as Icon (2020). In the monograph, Freeman analyzes ways in which the reader experiences reality – both visible and invisible – through poetry. Her fundamental assumption is that the relevant research question is not what literary art is, but how it comes to be what it is. Maurizio Cattelan, nato a Padova nel 1960, è oggi considerato uno degli artisti contemporanei più famosi al mondo. Autore di opere irriverenti e dal forte impatto visivo, si è imposto nel panorama artistico come grande interprete della quotidianità in continuo mutamento. Dalle opere dell’esordio, fino al pensionamento del 2011 e a quelle dei vari ritorni, non ha mai smesso di generare lavori in grado di raggiungere un pubblico sempre più eterogeneo. Digerendo i meccanismi basilari dei linguaggi mediatici odierni, nonché il funzionamento partecipativo dei vari social network, Cattelan risulta un perfetto comunicatore della contemporaneità. Questo volume, quindi, attraverso una gustosa metafora culinaria digerente, analizza la produzione artistica ed editoriale di un autore unico e si interroga, infine, sulla responsabilità del nuovo comportamento del fruitore anarchico.

Cost effectiveness is one of the crucial key factors driving the shipping and trading industry. Nowadays global trade involves multiple parties and sectors across international borders, and numerous paper transport documents, such as paper bills of lading (pBLs), are handled and disseminated around the world. With the advent of digital technology, electronic solutions are arguably ripe for the replacement of pBLs. The key benefits of using an electronic bill of lading have long been identified as the speed of transfer, the avoidance of external costs and removal of need to use Letters of Indemnity. As an alternative to the transfer of physical endorsements, electronic bills of lading (eBLs) are processed and transferred automatically by a computer system that constructs the information electronically using agreed standards. However, the journey of promoting eBLs is not all smooth sailing. Despite the growing number of private and public projects and initiatives during the past 40 years, the maritime world has yet seen the dawn of the electronic age. On the contrary, pBLs remain a staple in international trade, despite years of criticism over delays, costs and security risks. This thesis seeks to identify the underlying reasons for the stagnation in the development of this key legal document. It will demonstrate that, apart from the technical challenges, the real impediment to a true replacement of the pBL is the formidable legal challenges in reproducing the three principal functions of the antique paper-based trade document, for which the existing paperless implementations have failed to provide anything but a piecemeal solution. In coming to this finding, the thesis will also examine the effectiveness of the various legislative efforts, both nationally and internationally, to address the legal issues identified in the thesis. Finally, the author will attempt to speculate on the trends and prospects of the evolution of eBLs in the light of the observation

The paper discusses a self tuning control algorithm for a multivariable plant applied to a grammage cross profile control of a paper machine. The plant model represents the steady-state couplings as well as the dynamics behaviour of the system. The control algorithm handles special situations including the case where the numper of measurments is not equal to the numper of actuators and the case where special actuators are locked. The whole identification algorithm with a specical filter and an estimation of the required measurment accuary for a succesful identification of the steady-state couplings will be discussed. The paper shows how to proof the stability of the control system including the cases of locked actuators and identification errors. Finally, the whole conrol system is verified by in house simulations and at a real plant. The obtained control results are discussed.

Ultrasonication was used as a mean toincorporate glycerolor urea, yielding paper films with a ductility of up to 35%. Fiber-based materials are attractive sustainable alternativestofossil-based plastics, however, the lack of ductility (i.e., brittleness)limits their applicability in complex shapes as are often utilizedfor plastics. In this study, we hypothesize that it is possible toenhance the ductility of a cellulose-rich material by the incorporationof low molecular weight plasticizers (glycerol, urea, citric acid,and tannic acid). However, no significant effects could be observedafter swelling in the presence of plasticizers. To enhance any potentialeffect, it was decided to employ ultrasonication to mechanically disintegratethe fiber and aid the sorption of plasticizer prior to formation ofsheets from the treated fibers. Glycerol or urea in combination withultrasonication resulted in both internal and external fibrillationof the fibers, and it could be observed that the resulting fines createa film at the surface of the fibers in the formed sheets. Tensiletesting shows that this gives rise to a 100% increase in ductilitycompared to sheets from untreated fibers. The use of citric or tannicacid has the opposite effect, reducing ductility to a third of thatof the reference sheet. This is suggested to be due to the formationof covalent cross-links in the treated fibers, which also leads todifferent internal and external fibrillation mechanisms, as observedby scanning electron microscopy. The exceptionally high improvementof the strain-at-break for sheets from the glycerol- and urea-treatedfibers suggests that low molecular weight plasticizers affect theinternal properties of the fiber wall as well as the interactionsbetween the fine material forming in-between the fibers. The findingsfrom the current study suggest that the proposed approach to obtainductile cellulose-rich materials holds promise for the future, butit is also clear that more in-depth research is req, QC 20230630

Using biobased polyelectrolytes to emulsify natural fatty molecules is one possible key technology to create sustainable materials. The emulsions can be used in papermaking instead of synthetic hydrophobizing agents or in nonwoven manufacturing to create strong, hydrophobic textile-like materials. This article investigates a novel emulsification system based on a polyelectrolyte complex between chitosan dissolved in citric acid and carboxymethyl cellulose together with sunflower (Helianthus annuus) oil. Viscose nonwoven treated with the emulsion had a contact angle of over 120°. Tensile tests showed that the produced paper and nonwoven materials achieved high dry and, especially, high wet strength. Infrared spectroscopy illuminated the impact of heat curing the binder, and electron microscopy showed that the oil droplets from the emulsion were spread across the fibre surface. The results from this study enable sustainable nonwovens to be applied in areas where high dry and wet strength and water repellence are required; this includes outdoor applications, including agricultural mulch films, where nonwoven is used frequently and a sustainable approach is urgently needed to reduce the accumulation of plastics in the environment., QC 20230626

Fiber-based packaging has emerged as an alternative to plastic packaging, driven by concerns regarding environmental impact and excessive usage of plastic. In response to market trends favouring circular packaging solutions, Stora Enso is preparing to introduce Papira, an innovative fiber-based cushioning packaging material, in Europe. However, assessing the practical acceptability of new materials within existing recycling systems is crucial alongside laboratory tests that analyse recyclability. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine waste paper recycling practices implemented in Europe and identify factors that should be considered when introducing a new product into the European market to provide insights that will help evaluate the positioning of Papira and provide recommendations accordingly. To accomplish this aim, after creating a conceptual framework, a combination of interviews and desk research, including analysis of academic and grey literature sources, was employed to gather valuable insights and develop a comprehensive understanding. The scope of the study focuses on paper and board waste generated by households including eight countries: Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Poland, Sweden, and the Netherlands. One of the key findings of this study is the variation observed in the practices employed within the waste paper recycling system. The implementation of the Extended Producer Responsibility system highlights the prominence of both single and multiple Producer Responsibility Organizations, while the household separate collection system involves the collection of waste through different fractions. Consequently, the fractions collected and the designated mills for separated materials play a crucial role in the mechanical sorting stage, alongside the divergence in manufacturing methods employed by mills during the material recycling phase. Det tolfte målet i FN:s Agenda 2030 handlar om hållbar konsumtion och produktion, som bland annat innefattar mål om en hållbar användning av naturresurser. En strategi som blivit allt mer populär för att effektivisera användandet av naturresurser är återvinning. Den främsta miljöfördelen med återvinning vilar på ett antagande om att det faktiskt ersätter behovet av att ta ut nya resurser från naturen. Syftet med detta kandidatexamensarbete är att ge en ökad kunskap om hur olika aktörer inom koppar- och pappersbranschen ser på återvinning och dess möjligheter att ersätta naturresursutvinning. För att undersöka detta har intervjuer hållits med både företag och myndigheter som verkar i eller har kunskap om respektive branscher. Resultatet visar på, enligt de tillfrågade, att en ersättning i dagsläget inte är möjlig. Vad detta beror på verkar dock skilja sig åt mellan de två olika fallen. Resultatet visar att aktörerna inom kopparbranschen menar att efterfrågan på koppar ökar mer än den koppar som finns tillgänglig för återvinning till följd av elektrifieringen. För papper är det dock en annan faktor som styr möjligheten för ersättning enligt de tillfrågade. One of the targets concerns sustainable management and use of natural resources. One strategy that has gained more popularity throughout the years to handle this question is recycling. The prime environmental benefit is based on the assumption that recycling displaces the need to extract natural resources. The purpose of this study is to provide increased knowledge of the actors' perspective on the potential of recycling to displace natural resource extraction in the copper and paper industry. Interviews have been done with both companies and authorities. The results show that a complete displacement is not possible. However, the causes of this seem to differ between the two cases. The respondents of the copper industry mention that the increased demand of the metal which will occur as a consequence of the electrification process makes it difficult for a displacement. For paper, on the other hand, the quality loss the fibers suffer from at every recycling process requires continuous supply of raw fiber. However, the results also show a range of improvements that can be implemented to improve recycling in general, if those as well increase the displacement is not necessarily certain.

This report presents a project focused on designing and developing interior items for a trade fair booth, where the items are constructed using paper struts. These interior items are intended to showcase and promote the paper struts as a product and the company's brand. The project was commissioned by Wood Tube, the company that owns the rights to, manufactures, and sells the paper struts that were central to the project. Compared to metal struts commonly used for similar purposes, the paper struts are a sustainable material. They are made from recycled paper pulp and glue, making them biodegradable and environmentally friendly. Since paper struts are currently primarily used for non-load-bearing interior walls,the project aimed to explore new applications for the material.The project's goal was to develop one or more concepts for interior items made from Wood Tube's paper struts that could be utilized for marketing purposes. Multiple concepts were explored using product development methods, ultimately leading to a final combination of two concepts. The project's outcome consists of two concepts which is a standing table and a business card holder constructed from paper struts. The results also include comprehensive drawings and manufacturing instructions for the furniture to enable replication and further development. Additionally, a full-scale prototype of one of the concepts was created to demonstrate the potential of paper struts.

Sodium sulfite is commonly used for impregnating wood chips prior to refining when producing high-yield pulps such as CTMP. The impregnation process should ideally result in evenly sulfonated lignin, i.e. similar concentrations of sulfite (SO3 ^2-) ions in all parts of each wood chip. Sulfonated lignin is known to swell the fiber wall, which is beneficial for developing higher joint strength between fibers. In reality, even sulfonation is not easy to achieve considering variations in wood chip size, density, quality, etc. Being able to trace where the sulfite ions end up in the wood or fiber structure can therefore be key to both process and product development in the future. Synchrotron measurements can provide an understanding of the sulfur distribution both inside single wood fibers and on a larger scale between wood fibers. There is little knowledge of wood fiber nanostructures in 3 dimensions, although some interesting research has been conducted recently [1]. We have compared these measurements with 2D synchrotron XRF mappings [2]. The 3D material mapping provides insight into a sub-fiber level, but the 2D mapping technique might be preferable when studying sulfur distributions due to the highly uneven sulfur content observed. We can probably learn more about the development of fiber-joint-strength and strength uniformity in products by characterizing the distribution of sulfur on the sub-fiber level. These interior items are intended to showcase and promote the paper struts as a product and the company's brand. The project was commissioned by Wood Tube, the company that owns the rights to, manufactures, and sells the paper struts that were central to the project. Compared to metal struts commonly used for similar purposes, the paper struts are a sustainable material. They are made from recycled paper pulp and glue, making them biodegradable and environmentally friendly. Since paper struts are currently primarily used for non-load-bearing interior walls,the project aimed to explore new applications for the material.The project's goal was to develop one or more concepts for interior items made from Wood Tube's paper struts that could be utilized for marketing purposes. Multiple concepts were explored using product development methods, ultimately leading to a final combination of two concepts. The project's outcome consists of two concepts which is a standing table and a business card holder constructed from paper struts. The results also include comprehensive drawings and manufacturing instructions for the furniture to enable replication and further development. Additionally, a full-scale prototype of one of the concepts was created to demonstrate the potential of paper struts.

In 2016, the ICIJ independent organization released the leaks of the Panama Papers. Using the data presented, this thesis aims to evaluate and examine the models developed for the quantification of money laundering, analyze the variables that define the appeal of certain tax havens, and develop extensions to the Walker-Unger model. The proportion of illicit funds flowing from a source country to a host country was calculated using the Walker-Unger model as a reference while considering 35 source and 10 host countries. The variables were adjusted for statistical analyses input through multiple fractional probit regressions, and the outcome was compared to the original Walker-Unger estimates. At a 5% significance level, the research found significance between the account proportion and the independent variables. Furthermore, the evidence showcased more significant values obtained with the regression model, implying that the Walker-Unger model has become irrelevant in this modern era. Due to the following reasons, this study provides a perspective into improving the model through several recommendations.

The goal of the project was to create a model in COMSOL Multiphysics that can simulate thefilling of resin (epoxy) in Resin Impregnated Paper (RIP) bushings. Using the model new fillingrecipes that avoid problematic double-fronts and thereby avoid the creation of cavities in thebushings should be designed. Another goal was to use Thermocouples and Fiber optics tomeasure the temperature at different positions during the filling to get a better understanding ofthe filling. The first step was to design and determine functions, parameters (such as thepermeability), boundary conditions etc. for the simulation model in COMSOL Multiphysics and tocalibrate the model to align with measurements of fillings previously done. The second part wasto increase the filling time to minimize the maximum difference between filling fronts in thebushings and thereby decrease the risk of problematical double-fronts that create cavities,which decrease the bushing's dielectrical properties. The simulation model aligned somewhatwith the measured data but there is a lot of uncertainty both in the measurements and due toassumptions made in the simulation model. The measurements from Thermocouples and Fiberoptics where almost identical and they indicated that the filling of the bushing is symmetric.

The research work addresses the paper-making process from the stems of the cannabis plant, with the main objective of evaluating the technical and economic viability of this alternative in the paper industry. For this purpose, an experimental investigation was carried out, using a sample of cannabis stems from local crops. Chemical and physical analysis techniques were applied to determine the properties of the obtained fiber, and its quality was evaluated in terms of resistance, durability, and printing capacity. The results obtained indicate that the cannabis fiber presents characteristics similar to those of the wood pulp used in the conventional paper industry, suggesting that its use could be a viable and sustainable alternative. In addition, an economic analysis was carried out that allowed estimating production costs and comparing them with those of wood pulp. The results indicate that paper production from cannabis stems could be competitive in terms of costs, especially in regions where raw material is abundant and low-cost. In conclusion, this work presents an innovative and sustainable alternative for paper production, which could contribute to reducing the dependence of the paper industry on wood pulp and promoting the development of alternative crops., El trabajo de investigación aborda el proceso de elaboración de papel a partir de los tallos de la planta de cannabis, con el objetivo principal de evaluar la viabilidad técnica y económica de esta alternativa en la industria papelera. Para ello, se realizó una investigación de tipo experimental, utilizando una muestra de tallos de cannabis provenientes de cultivos locales. Se aplicaron técnicas de análisis químico y físico para determinar las propiedades de la fibra obtenida y se evaluó su calidad en términos de resistencia, durabilidad y capacidad de impresión. The Dreams for Digital Spaces joint symposium paper was co-written to accompany the Dreams for Digital Spaces Representative Symposia presented at the American Educational Research Association (AERA) annual meeting held in Chicago, US, 14th April 2023. The paper provides further details of each of the four interrelated contributions and full, combined reference list. Abstract: Dreams for Digital Spaces Symposium explores the array of so-called truths that shape the digital worlds of children, educators, researchers, imaginaries, data, AI, algorithms and more through a series of four interconnected presentations involving research that takes up the digital as a focus and/or mode of inquiry. Together the presentations demonstrate the power of combining data science with philosophy, artistry, co-design, and educational research through interdisciplinary collaborations – collaborations which have folded in and out of each other as ideas, methods and even people have travelled. The symposium offers the audience an opportunity to consider how digital practices become the stuff of dreams and nightmares, making room for a multiplicity of potentially transformative truths to take place across virtual and physical sites.

This statement paper summarises and appraises the evidence on diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of common shoulder injuries in sports. We systematically searched Medline and Embase. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation tool was applied to evaluate the overall quality of evidence. For diagnosis, we included 19 clinical tests from mixed populations. Tests for anterior instability, biceps-labrum complex injuries and full subscapularis rupture had high diagnostic accuracy (low to moderate quality of evidence). For prevention, the Oslo Sports Trauma Research Center, the Shoulder Control, the FIFA 11+ shoulder injury prevention programmes, and a baseball-specific programme (range of motion, stretching, dynamic stability and strengthening exercises) showed moderate to large effect size in reducing the risk of shoulder injury compared with no intervention (very low to moderate quality of evidence). For treatment, a rehabilitation programme including stretching, ice packs, electrotherapy and compression, and strengthening exercises showed a large effect size in reducing pain and disability compared with no intervention in athletes with subacromial impingement syndrome (very low to moderate quality of evidence). For the treatment of supraspinatus tendinopathy, hyperthermia treatment (heating the skin to 38°C–40°C) resulted in large effect size in reducing pain and disability compared with ultrasound or pendular swinging and stretching exercises (moderate quality of evidence). Strengthening exercise alone or in combination with stretching exercises promoted a large effect in reducing shoulder pain (cohort studies, no comparators) (very low quality of evidence). The quality of evidence for most estimates was low to moderate, indicating that future high-quality research may alter our recommendations for clinical practice.

In the paper by Jo\~ao F. Melo "The propagator matrix reloaded" (SciPost Phys. Core 6, 019 (2023), arXiv:2112.09119) the author provides a derivation of a formalism which includes interactions in the initial conditions for non-equilibrium quantum field theory. The main statement of this paper is that one cannot ignore interactions in the initial conditions, so quantum field theories at finite temperature are not free in the infinite past. The use of unproctored Internet-based testing (IBT) for personality assessment is increasingly popular, especially in personnel selection. Previous studies on its equivalence to traditional proctored paper-and-pencil testing (PPT) have used between-subjects designs, which makes it difficult to separate intergroup effects from format effects, and have shown mixed results. The aim of the present study was to assess the quantitative, qualitative, and auxiliary equivalence of unproctored IBT and proctored PPT of personality, using a within-sample design. Undergraduate students (n = 407) completed both an Internet and a paper-and-pencil version of a measure of the Big Five, with a 1 to 3 week interval. The proctored paper-and-pencil assessment was completed in class and the unproctored Internet assessment was completed at the time and place chosen by the participants. Results showed effect sizes for mean differences to vary from null to small. Skewness and kurtosis indices, reliability coefficients, intercorrelations magnitudes, as well as factor solutions, were highly similar across formats. Respondents did not prefer IBT over PPT on a series of statement about their perceptions and reactions to IBT. In conclusion, results suggest that IBT and PPT of the Big Five personality traits are equivalent, and that the data obtained are comparable across formats.

Given how quickly the educational landscape is changing, educators are having a fascinating conversation about how to incorporate excellent pedagogy into teaching practices. The objectives of this study are to locate recent writings on successful pedagogy for elementary schools and to emphasize their themes in instructional contexts. 15 recent journal papers were reviewed throughout a five-year period, from 2017 to 2021, as part of the study's literature strategy. The research demonstrates that a number of factors that contribute to effective education have continued to draw scholars to write about them in their papers throughout the past five years. Classroom management, instructors' competencies, instructional tactics, valued learning, and students' accomplishments are the core features of effective pedagogy that are commonly stressed in primary education. According to the findings of this study and numerous recent academic works, effective pedagogy is defined as the general attitude of instructors who specify their activities to implement new techniques, approaches, and ways to promote primary school students.
