In recent years two new experimental methods for the biologist, biochemist, chemist and medical researcher have been slowly making their way into science as important tools of research. They are paper chromatography and paper electrophoresis (also called zone electrophoresis). Both are methods of separating complex mixtures into their component parts, thereby enabling identification of each of their component fractions, or comparison of patterns of different mixtures. The biologist has utilized these tools to determine differences in the plasma, body fluids and tissues of different species and also to determine differences within the species itself. The chemist and the biochemist have used these methods to separate and identify new chemical compounds and their constituent parts. In recent years these methods have become valuable diagnostic aids in medicine and much work is being done in medical research utilizing these two tools.

Papers of William Edwin Chilton (1858-1939), a lawyer, Democratic politician, publisher of the , and U.S. Senator (1911-1917); also includes correspondence of his son William E. Chilton, Jr., editor of the . The Chiltons were a prominent Charleston family who were long-time owners of the . There are series of correspondence, legal papers, speeches and writings, and other material. Topics include state and national Democratic politics during the 1930s; family affairs; and the senator's business interests in West Virginia and Kentucky coal lands, including the Kanawha Coal Operators Association. The majority of the collection consists of correspondence from the 1930s; it's located in series 1. This correspondence can be accessed via a topical or name index.

Includes some materials relating to Spangler's theory of sex determination and his famous debate in 1922 with William Jennings Bryan regarding the theory of evolution. Bryan had offered a $100.00 prize to any professor who could reconcile evolution with the Bible and Spangler took up the challenge.

A set of paper cut out pieces which came from a children's paperback book. The set contains 14 individual cavalry, 17 individual infantry, 4 individual band, and 2 bannermen. Each piece should have a foldable strip at the bottom which helps the piece stand up; some are missing this strip due to being cut off. Some pieces are also missing various parts.

The package of cigarette papers is white with a two-tone blue sillouette of a soldier playing a bugle.

Papers of journalist Alice Cartledge Cornett, including newspaper articles authored by or regarding Cornett, photographs, and copies of her obituary. Although her family and career would take her around the world, Cornett returned frequently to the Morgantown area and to the Appalachian region throughout her life. Cornett's father was a professor at West Virginia University and she graduated from Morgantown High School in 1945; this collection includes material regarding her graduation and 50th class reunion. The majority of material in the collection regards Cornett's career in journalism, which began during her time living abroad in the Netherlands in the 1970s (please note that Cornett was named "Alice Drago" during this period of time). During her time in the Netherlands, she wrote articles for a number of publications and founded the first English-language newspaper, titled "The Hollander". Cornett later returned to the United States and continued her journalistic career, writing for "The Sentinel Echo" of London, Kentucky, as well as for other newspapers. Papers of Matthew Neely, a politician who had a long career as senator, congressman, governor, and Democratic political boss. There are also newspaper clipping scrapbooks covering the years 1928-1954 (on five reels of microfilm). Neely had a long career, including law student at West Virginia University, Marion County lawyer, mayor of Fairmont, congressman, 1913-1921, 1945-1947, United States senator, 1923-1929, 1931-1941, 1949-1958, and governor of West Virginia, 1941-1945.

Everett Moore was the uncle of Governor Arch Moore; they practiced law together. The office files of Charles McCamic of the law firm of McCamic and Clarke, Wheeling, West Virginia. McCamic was president of the Interstate Bridge Company; president and director of the Northeast Mississippi Oil Company; director of the Sehon-Stevenson Company; president and director of the American Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Company; and a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates in 1905. The files contain correspondence, case papers, and business reports of clients; also papers of the companies with which McCamic was associated. The papers of the War Effort Committee of the West Virginia Bar Association, including correspondence from servicemen in World War II, are also in the collection.

Also contains a soldier's pocket bible with bulletproof shield given by Miller to Paul Ray Cooper (1952); U.S.S. Moreland Papers, 1904-1940. Papers, photos, pamphlets and postcards of a prominent Morgantown attorney, financier and businessman, James Rogers Moreland. Included are drafts of books and articles by James R. Moreland about local and family history, in particular "Early Iron Industry in Cheat Mountains" and "My Father Another Country Lawyer." There are family histories and records about the Finnicum, Hawthorne, Huston, Lewis, Lyle, Moreland and Rogers families. There are also many items of World War I that especially pertain to Morgantown. Included among these is information about the Morgantown Militia Reserve and the Military Training Camps Association. Among other papers collected by Moreland are the records and a history of the Bank of Monongahela Valley, the papers of the Mercersburg Academy, the Rotary, Sons of the Revolution, and the WVU Kappa Alpha fraternity.

Letters, books, clippings, biographical and literary articles, and other papers regarding Appalachian poet and author, Jesse Stuart, gathered by family friend, Maryan Dahmer. There are over 90 letters from Stuart to Dahmer, dating from 1966 to 1976, which discuss travel, speaking engagements, publishers, opinions of authors and scholars, teaching, personal matters, etc. The collection also includes a large number of Stuart's books, many of which are first editions inscribed to Dahmer, as well as publications by his daughter Jane Stuart. Jesse Hilton Stuart was born on August 8, 1906 in Greenup County, Kentucky. He published over 2000 poems and over 60 books, writing primarily about Appalachian life in poems, novels, children's books, autobiographical works, and short stories. He received several prestigious accolades for his work, including the highest award for poetry in America, the Fellowship for the Academy of American Poets. Stuart spent the majority of his life in his hometown of Greenup and remained deeply devoted to his Appalachian roots until he died on 17 Feburary 1984. Series include: Series 1. Papers of Breece D'J Pancake (1952-1979) of Milton, West Virginia, noted short story writer who depicted the Appalachian experience of rural West Virginians. Breece Pancake had two short stories published in The Atlantic Monthly before he died of an apparent suicide on 8 April 1979. His only collection of stories, The Stories of Breece D'J Pancake, was published posthumously in 1983. Correspondence, writings, biographical and genealogical materials, and subject files document Breece Pancake's personal life and writing career from the mid-1960s to April 1979 as well as efforts made by his mother, Helen Pancake, and author John Casey to publish his stories after his death. Collection also contains subject files and oversize materials taken from Breece's office at the University of Virginia after he died. See scope and content note for details.

Papers of Muriel Miller Dressler (1918-2000), of Witcher, Kanawha County, West Virginia, noted Appalachian poet and lecturer in the 1970s and 1980s. Collection is chiefly composed of Dressler's poetry and other materials related to her career in the 1970s and early 1980s, though much of the material is undated. Writings include drafts of the poems in her two published collections, Appalachia, My Land (1973) and Appalachia (1977), as well as drafts of unpublished work, materials related to her speaking engagements, and letters related to her poetry. Notable correspondents from the 1970s include Earl Hamner, Ken Kesey, Martin Sheen, and Jesse Stuart. Collection also includes photographs, slides, and film footage of Dressler and audio cassettes of Dressler and William Plumley discussing Appalachian literature. Papers were compiled and probably organized by William Plumley, poet, professor of English, and editor of anthologies and articles on Appalachian folklore, poetry and fiction. Materials largely retain the order in which they were received from Plumley.

Montgomery Curtis, Journalist, Papers, 1891-1992. Papers and photos collected by a historian of journalism, Don E. Carter, about J. Montgomery Curtis, a renowned journalist and newspaper expert from Elm Grove, West Virginia. Curtis was best known as a long time director of the New York-based American Press Institute which was associated with Columbia University. The American Press Institute functioned to offer advice and criticism to journalists and news publications. The last part of his career was spent in Miami working for the Knight newspaper chain, later Knight Ridder newspapers, as a vice president and in-house critic. Most of the collection is comprised of correspondence with colleagues, biographical notes about Curtis, and critiques of practices in the newspaper business. There is much correspondence with John S. Knight evaluating the newspapers he owned, with James H. Ottaway who was a newspaper owner and long time chairman of the board of the American Press Institute, and with Don E. Carter and Malcolm F. Papers of George Bird Evans, a widely published author and illustrator of books and articles regarding hunting and bird dog breeding. Most of his work was produced at his home "Old Hemlock" in Preston County, West Virginia. Records document his careers as an author of books and articles regarding bird dog hunting; as a breeder of quality bird dogs; an illustrator for several national magazines and the United States Navy during World War II; and as co-author with his wife, Kay Evans, of mystery novels. Materials include: George Bird Evans' Gun Diary with entries and illustrations regarding hunting, fishing, and dog breeding experiences for 65 years; correspondence with friends, patrons, publishers, and other hunters; manuscripts and galleys; cassette tapes (2 items) of recordings of readings by George and Kay Evans; DVDs (3 items) containing 188 digital scans of illustrations by George Bird Evans; and a scrapbook documenting the Evans' career as mystery writers under the pen name "Brandon Bird". There are also 32 oversize drawings by G.B. Vincent, Lawyer and Judge, Papers, 1894-1929. The papers, diaries, and ledgers of George A. Vincent, a Fairmont lawyer and Marion County judge. Vincent, a local lawyer of prominence, represented individuals in a variety of cases including vagrancy, grand larceny, and operating a house of ill fame. His clients, for the most part, however, were involved in more routine litigation, including divorces, civil suits, and commercial activities. His daily diaries chronicle not only his professional life, but also provide insight about his personal life, including his avid interest in history and his involvement in building a library for Fairmont. Includes correspondence.

Davis, Lawyer, Papers, 1842, 1861-1897, 1918-1927, 1946-1953, 1978. Scrapbooks, diaries, correspondence and papers of the noted lawyer and 1924 presidential aspirant for the Democrats, John W. Davis, kept by his daughter, a famous author, Julia (McDonald) Davis Adams. Noteworthy is a 1948 official publication in tribute to Davis' career as Solicitor General of the United States (1913-1918). There is a typescript copy of his diary recounting his wartime and post-war tenure (1918-1921) as the U.S. ambassador to Great Britain. His letters include some of his candid feelings about the political events of his day such as the New Deal and tributes to his scholarly approach to practicing law from Supreme Court Justices Robert H. Jackson and Felix Frankfurter.

Papers, pamphlets, periodicals and books of George Crago who was labor editor of the Morgantown Dominion News (1943-51), then the only commercial daily newspaper in the U. S. A. with a daily labor department. Crago served as editor of the United Chemical Worker, CIO (1951-55) which operated in the Congress of Industrial Organizations national headquarters in Washington, DC. After the merger in 1955 of the AFL and the CIO he transferred to the Pennsylvania affiliate where he worked at the Harrisburg headquarters. The papers indicate various articles he researched and authored on Morgantown and labor topics.
