XXIX NUMBER 2 ' . . This Month's Cover This month's cover picture is a reproduction of a natural color Kodachrome view of a section of the Grand Canyon of Arizona. As you will note, it is an unusual view, one perhaps, you have not seen before. The picture was made from the rim of the Canyon about twenty-five miles east of El Tovar Hotel. The beauty of the Canyon seems to be enhanced by the roc~s and foliage in the foreground, and the Colorado River in the dis­tance, about four or five miles, portrayed through the fissu re in the rocks. The river, represented by a threadlike white line is, perhaps, four or five hundred feet wide-yet it appears to the eye to be only a few feet wide. · This is one of the most beautiful views of the Canyon. Of course, the picture only shows a sJnall section of the 217 miles of sceni.c beauty. Hundreds of views could be n1ade of the Canyon and all somewhat different, but to the writer none is 1nore striking and beautifu.J, than the one appearing on our c ver this month. In some other places the hasm is deeper and perhaps, wider th an it is at this pojnt, but, with the Colorado River in the back­ground , poru·a · ed thr ugh the fis ur in the rock, seems to lend arti t i-c beauty to th who] scene. Thom­son, Sr., (deceased) in May, 1894 just SO years ago. And on its Golden Anniversary we are pleas­ed t o st ate that today it is one of the leading manu­fac turers of fine papers in the United States. Beginning with a force of t en employees, Cham­pion today employs approximately 6,500 people in its plants locat ed at H am.ilton Ohio; Canton, North Carolina; Houston, T exas, and Sandersville, Georgia. At the top, left hand corner of the cover is a picture of Mr. Thomson's first office building; Mr. Thomson standing at the door. In the background can be seen Champion's first home under construc­tion. .On the right at the top is an aerial view of the present parent plant at Hamilton, Ohio. Cov-ering approxitnately 35 acres. , The Canton plant, which covers approximately 216 acres, including wood yard, is shown on the left underneath picture of old office building. To the right of the Canton plant is shown a section of the large Cutter room in the Hamilton plant. Piled in the background are some of the supplies and am­munition vvhich your Bonds helped to purchase for the lib­eration of ooth American and F.ilipino prisoners, and open· the road to Tokyo. The water buffalo, orig~nally from India, has been do­mesticated and are now used as draft animals in most of the warmer countries of Asia and the South Pacific. The water buffalo is said to be larger and less docile than the common ox, and is fond of marshy places and rivers. Our Cover Picture by Bartolomeo Esteban Murillo, Spanish School, 1616-1682 (The "Santiago Madonna") The theme of the Virgin and Child is almost as popular with Muri1lo as that of the Immaculate Conception. His earliest known version was painted while he was in his t\ enties. This was followed by a succession of others now familiar the world over through con­stant reproduction. The often repeated criticisln that ~furillo's Virgins are for the most part merely pretty girls or young Spanish women with their babies cannot be denied. Sotne are more pleasing than others, but ::til are convincing as real people whom the artist must have known. As Murillo made increasing use of the Virgin and Child in holy scenes and v isions, he developed a 1:nore pictorial composition by showing the mother turned slightly to the right with head, almost in profile, bent toward the Child and looking down at him instead of out at the spectator. This harmonious arrangement in the Santiago _painting is en­hanced by the simplicity of the composition and the sobriety and dignity of the Virgin's face and figure. T he eastern border of the park is only about t \venty-five miles west of the Canton Division Plant. T hese peaks are ahnost insurmountable due to the sides approaching the perpendicular. Only a very few n1ountain climbers have ever atten1pted to scale the peaks. The photo \vas made from the highway where it forms a loop., passing through a tunnel underneath the road. Note traihvay in foreground .
