The Robert-Bonamy formalism has been commonly used to calculate half-widths and shifts of spectral lines for decades. This formalism is based on several approximations. Among them, two have not been fully addressed: the isolated line approximation and the neglect of coupling between the translational and internal motions. Recently, we have shown that the isolated line approximation is not necessary in developing semi-classical line shape theories. Based on this progress, we have been able to develop a new formalism that enables not only to reduce uncertainties on calculated half-widths and shifts, but also to model line mixing effects on spectra starting from the knowledge of the intermolecular potential. In our previous studies, the new formalism had been applied to linear and asymmetric-top molecules. In the present study, the method has been extended to symmetric-top molecules with inversion symmetry. As expected, the inversion splitting induces a complete failure of the isolated line approximation. We have calculated the complex relaxation matrices of selfbroadened NH3. The half-widths and shifts in the ν1 and the pure rotational bands are reported in the present paper. When compared with measurements, the calculated half-widths match the experimental data very well, since the inapplicable isolated line approximation has been removed. With respect to the shifts, only qualitative results are obtained and discussed. Calculated off-diagonal elements of the relaxation matrix and a comparison with the observed line mixing effects are reported in the companion paper (Paper II).

A previous calculation for H + N2 (Walch et al., 1989) focused on the minimum energy path (MEP) region of the potential energy surface and on estimates of the lifetime of the HN2 species. In this paper, energies computed at geometries selected to permit a global representation of the potential energy surface (PES) are reported. As in the previous work, the calculations were performed using the complete active space self-consistent field/externally contracted configuration interaction method. The surface was characterized using the same basis set as in the previous paper except that an improved contraction of the H s-basis is used. Calculations with a larger basis set were carried out along an approximate MEP obtained with the smaller basis set. The new PES exhibits a sharp curvature, which was not present in the previous calculations, and has a slightly narrower and smaller barrier to dissociation. Saddle points for H atom exchange via collinear and T shaped HN2 complexes are also reported.

Recently, several linear scaling approaches have been introduced which replace the time dominating diagonalization step in semiempirical methods, enabling practical calculations to be performed, on very large molecules. This paper compares the accuracy and performance of pseudodiagonalization (PD), conjugate gradient density matrix search (CG-DMS), the Chebyshev polynomial expansion method (CEM), and purification of the density matrix (PDM) as linear scaling substitutions for diagonalization. The scaling, speed, and reliability of these methods are compared for AMI single point energy calculations on polyglycine chains (up to 20,000 atoms), water clusters (up to 12,300 atoms), and nucleic acids (up to 6300 atoms).

Molecular nitrogen plays a central role in the energetics of the earth's upper atmosphere and is the major constituent of the atmospheres of the planetary satellites Titan and Triton. This paper reports a new set of absorption oscillator strengths measured at higher resolution for seven bands in the 95.8-99.4 nm region. The results are compared with earlier, lower resolution absorption measurements, electron scattering measurements, and calculations based on a deperturbation analysis of the excited states.

This paper reports a theoretical study of the dependence of the E 1Sigma(+)g v(E) = 0, J-X 1Sigma(+)g, v(X),J transitions in H2, HD, and D2 on the initial vibrational and rotational quantum numbers v(X) and J. The results demonstrate the concerted nature of two-photon transitions. The magnitude of the two-photon transition moment increases with v(X) between 0 and 2, then decreases rapidly at higher v(X). The J dependence of the two-photon transition moment is most strongly affected by the changes in vibrational wave functions caused by centrifugal distortion of the vibrational potential. It is shown that the J variation can be used as a probe of resonant tunneling in the double-well potential of the E,F state.

This paper describes a new approach to the study of atom-diatom reactive collisions in three dimensions employing wave packets and the time-dependent Schroedinger equation. The method uses a projection operator approach to couple the inelastic and reactive portions of the total wave function and optical potentials to circumvent the necessity of using product arrangement coordinates. Reactive transition probabilities are calculated from the state resolved flux of the wave packet as it leaves the interaction region in the direction of the reactive arrangement channel. The present approach is used to obtain such vibrationally resolved probabilities for the three-dimensional H + H2 (J = 0) hydrogen exchange reaction, using a body-fixed system of coordinates.

The paper develops the theory of the hydrodynamic stability of an electrolytic cell as a function of the imposed electric current. A new electrohydrodynamic instability is encountered when the current is forced to exceed the Nernst limit. The convection is driven by the volume force exerted by the electric field on space charges in the electrolyte. This intrinsic instability is found to be easily masked by extrinsic convection sources such as gravity or stirring. A linear stability analysis is performed and a dimensionless number Le is derived whose value determines the convection pattern.

The paper presents results of drift-tube mass-spectrometer studies of the reactivity of doubly charged molecular oxygen ions with several molecules and neon atoms. Thermal-energ rate coefficients for the reactions with the molecular reactants were found to be large, close to the limiting Langevin rates. Charge transfer with neon atoms was observed, but the measured rate coefficient was only a small fraction of the Langevin rate. It is concluded that the measured rate constants for the reactions considereed refer to vibrationally excited ions.

The paper reports the quantitative photoabsorption and fluorescence cross sections of dimethyl ether (DME) measured with synchrotron radiation. Determinations were also made of the absolute fluorescence cross sections, the fluorescence quantum yield, and the radiative lifetime.

Several dynamics studies have indicated that the product isotopic distributions and vibrational energy distributions in the reaction O(1D) + H2(HD) are very sensitive to the long range interaction of the reactants. In this paper, an improved calculation of the reactant region of the potential energy surface is reported. In agreement with previous work, no barrier is found to edge-on insertion (1 A-prime ground state water surface), but a smaller (less than 0.2 kcal/mol) barrier to collinear addition, 1 Sigma (+) surface, is found than in previous work. The long range potential obtained in the present work most closely resembles the SL3 surface.

In this paper, the results of ab initio calculations of photoelectron angular distributions and vibrational branching ratios for the (2 + 1) resonant enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) of H2 via the E,F 1Sigma(+)g state are reported, and these are compared with the experimental data of Anderson et al. (1984). These results show that the observed non-Franck-Condon behavior is predominantly due to the R dependence of the transition matrix elements, and to a lesser degree to the energy dependence. This work presents the first molecular REMPI study employing a correlated wave function to describe the Rydberg-valence mixing in the resonant intermediate state.

This paper describes efforts to locate the prewetting line in a binary liquid system (isopropanol-perfluoromethylcyclohexane) at the vapor-liquid interface. Tight upper bounds were placed on the temperature separation (0.2 K) between the prewetting line and the line of bulk liquid phase separation. The prewetting line in systems at equilibrium was not detected. Experimental signatures indicative of the prewetting line occurred only in nonequilibrium situations. Several theories predict that the adsorption of one of the components (the fluorocarbon, in this case) at the liquid-vapor interface should increase abruptly, at a temperature sightly above the temperature at which the mixture separates into two liquid phases. A regular solution calculation indicates that this prewetting line should have been easily detectable with the instruments used in this experiment. Significant features of the experiment are: (1) low-gradient thermostatting, (2) in situ stirring, (3) precision ellipsometry from the vapor-liquid interface, (4) high resolution differential index of refraction measurements using a novel cell design, and (5) computer control.

It was previously reported that the reaction products from the synthesis of ozone in an electric discharge through molecular oxygen display a nonmass-dependent (NoMaDic) oxygen isotope effect. In this paper, a detailed characterization of the isotope effect, including the effect of molecular oxygen pressure, and the presence of a chemically inert third body (helium), is reported. The NoMaDic effect is due to an isotopically selective stabilization of the O3 formation reaction intermediate, possibly resulting from the ability of the different isotopomers to exhibit different molecular symmetries.

The present paper provides the results of molecular dynamics calculations on a Na(+) ion in aqueous solution. Attention is given to the sodium-oxygen and sodium-hydrogen radial distribution functions, the velocity autocorrelation function for the Na(+) ion, the autocorrelation function of the force on the stationary ion, and the accuracy of Brownian motion assumptions which are basic to hydrodynamic models of ion dyanmics in solution. It is pointed out that the presented calculations provide accurate data for testing theories of ion dynamics in solution. The conducted tests show that it is feasible to calculate Brownian friction constants for ions in aqueous solutions. It is found that for Na(+) under the considered conditions the Brownian mobility is in error by only 60 percent.

It is pointed out that transition metals and transition metal (TM) compounds are currently of considerable interest because of their relevance to catalysis and to materials science problems such as hydrogen embrittlement and crack propagation in metals. The present paper is concerned with complete active space Self-Consistent Field (SCF) externally contracted configuration interaction (CASSCF/CCI) calculations for the low-lying states of Sc3 and Sc3(+). A comparison is conducted regarding the bonding in the Ca3, Sc3, and Cu3 molecules. This comparison makes it possible to predict general trends for the TM trimers. Attention is given to the qualitative features of the bonding in the TM trimers, the basis sets and other technical details of the calculations, the calculated results for Sc3 and Sc3(+), and conclusions from this work.

The present paper is concerned with an analysis of the bonding in Fe2(CO)9, taking into account the results of self-consistent-field (SCF) calculations. The basis sets used are the same as those employed in the study of Fe(CO)5 conducted by Bauschlicher and Bagus (1985). The Fe basis set starts with the 14s9p5d primitive set optimized by Wachters (1970), which is contracted to 8s4p5d. An SCF wave function, consisting of only the core electrons, was determined, and then electrons were slowly added to the virtual orbitals with the lowest eigenvalues. The conducted calculations show no direct Fe-Fe bonding, but rather bonding resulting from the bridging CO's. The bonding is found to involve both the 5 sigma and 2 pi(asterisk) orbitals of the bridging CO's.

It is customary in the study of ionic crystals to assume that the ions are point charges at their respective lattice sites; the corresponding electrostatic energy of one such ion is reducible to Madelung's form, where the Madelung number has a value of 1.7467. This paper considers the modifications in the electrostatic energy when the atomic finite size is treated in more detail. The results are tabulated as a direct correction to Madelung's number for alkali halide cubic crystals.

The paper deals with an investigation of associated reactions of C(+) ions with H2 and D2 molecules, using drift-tube-mass spectrometer techniques. It is found that at H2 and D2 densities of 1 x 10 to the 16th per cu cm, the reactions proceed by three-body association, the rate coefficients at 300 and 78 K being somewhat higher for D2 than for H2. The measurements place an upper limit on the rate coefficients for radiative association, a process thought to constitute an important step in the formation of molecules in interstellar gas clouds

The paper presents a new electron gas intermolecular NH3-He potential determined by the Hartree-Fock results of Davis, Boggs, and Mehrotra (1979) with semiempirical long-range induction and dispersion terms. The resulting potential agrees with beam scattering and pressure broadening measurements; it was also found that the quadrupole induced dipole interaction is not as effective as the short range anisotropy. It was concluded that discrepancies remain in the quantitative description of energy transfer in the NH3-He system; discrepancies result from improper consideration of the dependence of cross-sections on degenerate magnetic quantum levels in the experimental investigation.

The paper presents the multiconfiguration-self-consistent (MCSCF) and configuration state functions (CSF) for the low-lying electronic states of MgO. It was shown that simple description of these states was possible provided the 1 Sigma(+) states are individually optimized at the MCSCF level, noting that the 1(3 Sigma)(+) and 2(1 Sigma)(+) states which nominally result from the same electron occupation are separated energetically. The molecular orbitals obtained at this level of approximation should provide a useful starting point for extended configuration interaction calculations since they have been optimized for the particular states of interest.

The paper presents the measurements of linear triatomic carbon opacity (C3) made in a graphite tube furnace to extend the wavelength range of Brewer and Engelke (1962) to the 280-600 nm range. An electrooptical method was used to determine C3 absorption in argon at 2720 to 3060 K; a quartic polynomial regression expression was derived to provide a complete temperature profile from pyrometer measurements. The C3 spectra were plotted for several opacity levels. It was concluded that the extension of the spectral range to the near u.v. levels made it easier to identify C3 particles.

The paper presents photolysis absorption spectroscopy experimental results which show rapid vibrational quenching of O2(1 Delta, v not less than 1) molecular oxygen fragments in an atmospheric environment. The reactions of this species were determined by flash photolysis of ozone in the Hartley band combined with absorption spectroscopic detection of O2(1 Delta v equals 0) fragments and resonance fluorescence detection of O(3P). It was shown that rapid vibrational deactivation occurs under atmospheric conditions; in addition, an upper limit was determined for the photolytic channel of the O(1D) + O3 yields O2(1 Sigma) reaction.

The paper describes an experimental study of the title reaction that uses the discharge-flow technique, laser-induced-fluorescence detection of OH and simultaneous monitoring of O and H atoms in the 250-459 K range. The reaction is normal and free from surface effect interference in Teflon or halocarbon wax-coated tube, but not in clean Pyrex. OH radicals are generated in three ways and at low concentrations to eliminate side reactions. The rate constants were determined at 298 K and over the 250-459 K range, with a factor of two higher at 298 K and factors of 3 to 5 higher at 10 to 30 km altitude in the terrestrial atmosphere than previous studies have indicated. The effect of the higher rate constant on atmospheric processes and on recent laboratory measurements of other reactions is also discussed.

The paper reports on experimental vibrational intensity distributions for continuum photoionization of oxygen using both 584 and 304 A helium lines. A cylindrical mirror energy analyzer with known transmission properties was used to record photoelectron spectra at a resolution of 45 meV with dispersed He radiation. At each wavelength the vibrational intensity distribution were corrected for the transmission of the analyzer and normalized to 100 at the strongest level. A table lists the results with calculated Franck-Condon factors.

The paper discusses the O(1S) yield from O3 photodissociation measured in the 1700-2400 A region using synchrotron radiation as a light source. An upper limit for the yield set at 0.1% for the entire photon energy range indicates that the contribution of O(1S) to atmospheric OH production is not significant. The spin restriction for going into the O(1S) + O2/X3Sigma(-)(g)/ channel appears to be the determining factor in the low yield. There are three spin-allowed channels to produce excited O2 molecules with thresholds between 2300 and 2650 A; it is recommended to investigate these dissociative pathways.

In order to relate the measured fringe shift of an interferometer to the density of a medium, the relation between density and refractive index, which is expressed by the specific refractivity, must be known. In the present paper, the specific refractivities of the wind tunnel test gases CF4 and C2F6 are determined in order to verify estimations based on the atomic refractivities of carbon and fluorine. A Twyman-Green two-beam interferometer with a 633-nm He-Ne laser light source was used to measure the specific refractivity as a function of fringe shift as the density of the gas was changed. Values of 0.122 and 0.131 cu cm/g were obtained for CF4 and C2F6 respectively at a temperature of 300 K, which are within 1% of the values computed from the atomic refractivities.

A realistic assessment of the potential depletion of stratospheric ozone due to manmade emissions requires a knowledge of the sources and sinks of the potential threat. The reactions ClO + NO2 + M yield products and Cl + NO2 + M yield products are of interest because they represent possible sink mechanism for both odd chlorine and odd nitrogen species. In this paper, the Troe method (1977) is used to calculate the low-pressure limit rate constants of the above three-body reactions. The result for the Cl + NO2 + M reaction is found to be in excellent agreement with the experimental finding of Niki et al. (1978), where both nitryl chloride and chlorine nitrate are products of the cited reaction. An explanation is proposed to account for apparent discrepancy between the measured rate constants for ClO + NO2 + M in the forward and reverse directions. Stratospheric implications are also discussed.

The paper describes an absorption measurement for determining the Gibbs free energy of OH generated in a mixture of water and oxygen vapor. These measurements afford a direct verification of the accuracy of thermochemical data of H2O at high temperatures and pressures. The results indicate that values for the heat capacity of H2O obtained through numerical computations are correct within an experimental uncertainty of 0.15 cal/mole K.

The paper presents ab initio calculations performed on the electronic states of UF6, UF6(+), and UF6(-) using a relativistic effective core potential (ECP) for uranium and a nonrelativistic ECP for fluorine. In most of the calculations 56 valence electrons are treated explicitly using a contracted (3s 3p 2d 2f/2s2p) Gaussian basis. It is noted that various ECP's were explored, but all yield an overall charge density of U(+2.4)/F(-0.4)/6. In addition, the bonding in the ground state of UF6 is discussed. SCF and CI calculations on UF6(+) are compared with the experimental photoelectron spectrum and with previous scattered wave calculations. Further, the role of spin-orbit coupling in the states of UF6(+) and UF6(-) is covered. Finally, it is concluded that the calculated electron affinity of UF6 (7.1 eV) is considerably larger than in current experimental estimates, but the relative energies of the states of UF6(-) are in agreement (0.1-0.2 eV) with those of the experiment.

The paper introduces principles which greatly simplify the process of designing and analyzing compound pulse cycles. These principles are demonstrated by applying them to the design and analysis of several cycles, including a 52-pulse cycle; this pulse cycle combines six different REV-8 cycles and has substantially more resolving power than previously available techniques. Also, a new 24-pulse cycle is introduced which combines three different REV-8 cycles and has a resolving ability equivalent to that of the 52-pulse cycle. The principle of pulse-cycle decoupling provides a method for systematically combining pulse groups into compound cycles in order to achieve enhanced performance. This method is illustrated by a logical development from the two-pulse solid echo sequence to the WAHUHA (Waugh et al., 1968), the REV-8, and the new 24-pulse and 52-pulse cycles, along with the 14-pulse and 12-pulse cycles. Proton chemical shift tensor components for several organic solids, measured by using the 52-pulse cycle, are reported without detailed discussion.

This paper presents a unified theory of the coherent, multiple-photon excitation and laser-stimulated migration of atoms adsorbed on solid surfaces. We show that under steady-state excitation the migration of the adsorbed atom on the surface is diffusional, with diffusion constant dependent upon field intensity, surface temperature, relaxation constants, dipole moment strength, laser frequency, and the vibrational frequency of the adsorbed atom. In particular, it is shown that the rate of diffusion is proportional to the field intensity. Finally, we discuss the utility of laser-stimulated migration in the enhancement of surface chemical reactions, as well as in the analysis of surface relaxational processes.

The nucleating droplets or clusters in many nucleation environments (various colloidal plasmas in laboratory and technological applications, astrophysical condensation environments, etc.) are likely to be at a finite electric potential. This may be due either to the presence of electrons and ions in the gas phase or to the thermal ionization or photoionization of the droplets. The paper demonstrates that this potential may introduce a nontrivial modification in the conventional nucleation theory. Some results for the typical case of nucleation of water droplets are presented. The general conclusion is that the electric potential makes nucleation harder to achieve, thereby demonstrating the importance of a finite droplet potential in the theory of nucleation.

The paper presents a detailed development of the coupled-states approximation for the general case of two colliding diatomic molecules. The high-energy limit of the exact Lippman-Schwinger equation is applied, and the analysis follows the Shimoni and Kouri (1977) treatment of atom-diatom collisions where the coupled rotor angular momentum and projection replace the single diatom angular momentum and projection. Parallels to the expression for the differential scattering amplitude, the opacity function, and the nondiagonality of the T matrix are reported. Symmetrized expressions and symmetrized coupled equations are derived. The present correctly labeled coupled-states theory is tested by comparing its calculated results with other computed results for three cases: H2-H2 collisions, ortho-para H2-H2 scattering, and H2-HCl.

The paper presents a quantum mechanical formalism for treating ionizing collisions occurring in the presence of an intense laser field. Both the intense laser radiation and the internal electronic continuum states associated with the emitted electrons are rigorously taken into account by combining discretization techniques with expansions in terms of electronic-field representations for the quasi-molecule-plus-photon system. The procedure leads to a coupled-channel description of the heavy-particle dynamics which involves effective electronic-field potential surfaces and continua. It is suggested that laser-influenced ionizing collisions can be studied to verify the effects of intense laser radiation on inelastic collisional processes. Calculation procedures for electronic transition dipole matrix elements between discrete and continuum electronic states are outlined.

The paper reports laser-induced fluorescence measurements of the initial product state distributions of CN(X2 Sigma +) produced during the photolysis of C2N2 at a wavelength of 160 nm. The parent molecules were photodissociated by an argon flash lamp, and saturated solutions of BBD in p-dioxane were used as a laser dye to produce radiation that excited CN radicals in the (upsilon-double-prime, N-prime) vibrational-rotational sublevels of the X state to the B-state sublevels. Spectral-line identification is discussed along with the observed rotational, electronic, and vibrational energy partitionings. The effect of added buffer gas (N2 or He) on the observed product state distributions is examined in order to monitor collisional energy transfer from CN(A2 Pi, upsilon = 0) to CN(X2 Sigma +, upsilon-double-prime = 4). It is found that both buffer gases produce population inversion between the upsilon-double-prime = 4 and upsilon-double-prime = 3 levels of the X state.

Webeler's (1976) experimental results for the generation of atomic hydrogen in a hydrogen matrix by tritium decay are reexamined with a variant of Rosen's (1976) mathematical treatment. The analysis retains Rosen's equations for the number densities of trapped and mobile hydrogen atoms, but replaces his enthalpy equation with an equation for the directly measured temperature. Theoretical expressions are derived for the dependence of storage time, recombination time, and maximum density of trapped hydrogen atoms as a function of temperature for a given tritium concentration. A comparison of predictions for the maximum trapped atomic hydrogen number density as a function of storage time reveals that Rosen's estimate for the maximum number density of hydrogen atoms for the zero magnetic field case is a little more optimistic than the estimate obtained in the paper.

The lower‐bounds method presented by Löwdin in the preceding paper has been applied to oscillators perturbed by third‐ and fourth‐power terms in the potential‐energy expression. For favorable cases agreement between upper and lower bounds is easily carried to many more figures than are likely to be physically significant. In many cases the lower bounds agreed more closely to the true eigenvalue than did the corresponding upper bounds. For a given basis set, this method gives closer bounds than that of Bazley and Fox, except for energy levels too high to be satisfactorily treated in the given basis. The only disadvantage found was that for close bounds double precision proved necessary, indicating more than ordinary loss of computational accuracy.

The bracketing theorem in the partitioning technique for solving the Schrödinger equation may be used in principle to determine upper and lower bounds to energy eigenvalues. Practical lower bounds of any accuracy desired may be evaluated by utilizing the properties of ``inner projections'' on finite manifolds in the Hilbert space. The method is here applied to the ground state and excited states of a Hamiltonian H=H(sub 0)+V having a positive definite perturbation V. Even if inspiration is derived from the method of intermediate Hamiltonians, the final results are of bracketing type and independent of this approach. The method is numerically illustrated in some accompanying papers.

Many recent studies of solid-state phenomena, particularly in the area of crystal imperfections, have involved the use of melt-grown NaCl single crystals. Quite often trace impurities in these materials have had a prominent effect on these phenomena. Trace amounts of hydroxide ion have been found in melt-grown NaCl crystals. This paper describes a nondestructive method of neutralizing the hydroxide ion in such crystals. Crystals of similar hydroxide content are maintained at an elevated temperature below the melting point of NaCl in a flowing atmosphere containing. dry hydrogen chloride. Heat treatment is continued until an analysis of the test specimens shows no excess hydroxide ion. A colorimetric method previously described4 is used for this analysis.
