In this study, the occurrence and distribution of heavy metals in coal gasification fine ash (CGFA) with different particle sizes were investigated to ensure safer disposal and utilization strategies for CGFA. These measures are critical to sustainable industrial practices. This study investigates the distribution and leachability of heavy metals in CGFA, analyzing how these factors vary with particle size, carbon content, and mineral composition. The results demonstrated that larger CGFA particles (>1 mm) encapsulated up to 70 % more heavy metals than smaller particles (<0.1 mm). Cr and Zn were present in higher concentrations in larger CGFA particles, whereas volatile elements such as Zn, Hg, Se, and Pb were found in relatively higher contents in finer CGFA particles. At least 70 % of Hg in CGFA was present in an acid-soluble form of speciation, whereas Cd, Zn, and Pb were mostly present in a reducible form of speciation, which could be attributed to the presence of franklinite. More than 40 % of Cd and Zn in fine CGFA particles exist in an acid-soluble form. With the exception of CGFA&#95;1.18, Se in CGFA mainly existed in an oxidizable form at a ratio of 60 %-80 %. This could be attributed to the presence of bassanite particles as well as the higher affinity of Se for S. In contrast, Cr, Cu, and As were mostly present in residual speciation forms owing to their parasitism in quartz, sillimanite, and amorphous Fe solid solution in CGFA. Additionally, the study revealed that there was no significant relationship between heavy metal content, leaching behavior, and carbon content in CGFA. The feasibility of soil washing for remediating PFAS-contaminated clay soil using various water-organic solvents was systematically investigated based on the combination of batch and column tests. Batch tests using 22 types of solvents highlighted that 0 % (water) and 5 % solvents could effectively extract PFCAs (≤ C9), while long-chain PFCAs (≥ C10) and PFSAs required 80 % solvents for optimal extraction, with efficiency in the order of EtOH ≤ MeOH < Acetonitrile (ACN), suggesting a strong correlation with carbon chain lengths and functional head groups. Column tests with six selected washing solutions indicated rapid desorption of PFOA and PFOS initially, peaking at liquid-to-solid (L/S) ratios of 3-4 for 0 % and 5 % solutions, and at an L/S ratio of 1 for 80 % solutions. To remediate 1 kg-dry soil to meet the legislatively permissible levels for groundwater in Japan (PFOA + PFOS < 50 ng/L), 11 L of 0 % solution (water) or 5 L of 80 % ACN are required for washing out PFOA, while 62 L of 0 % solution (water) or 53 L of 80 % ACN for PFOS. Sensory deterioration exists in marketed cooked rice. The migration and interaction of intrinsic components occur under multiple conditions in each industrial production process and cause relevant physicochemical changes in cooked rice. This review aims to establish a scientific knowledge system of intrinsic component transition and migration in cooked rice kernel during processing to solve qualitative deficiencies in cooked rice products. The main influencing factors of intrinsic component structural change in cooked rice and the quality control points that should be considered are summarized. Dewatering is an indispensable link in sludge treatment, but its effect on the microplastics (MPs) remains inadequately understood. This study investigated the physicochemical changes and leaching behavior of MPs during the mechanical dewatering of sludge, as well as the impact of MP leachates on activated sludge (AS). After sludge dewatering, MPs exhibit rougher surfaces, decreased sizes and altered functional groups due to the addition of dewatering agents and the application of mechanical force. Meanwhile, plastic additives, depolymerization products, and derivatives of their interactions are leached from MPs during sludge dewatering process. The concentration of MP-based leachates in sludge is 2-25 times higher than that in water. The enhancement of pH and ionic strength caused by dewatering agents induces the release of MP leachates enriched with protein-like, fulvic acid-like, and soluble microbial by-product-like substances. The reflux of MP leachates in sludge dewatering liquor to the wastewater treatment system negatively impacts AS, leading to a decrease in COD removal rate and inhibition of the extracellular polymeric substances secretion. More importantly, MP leachates cause oxidative stress to microbial cells and alter the microbial community structure of AS at the phylum and genus levels. Benzovindiflupyr is a succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor fungicide that targets mitochondrial function for disease control. In this study, we investigated the adsorption-desorption and leaching behavior of benzovindiflupyr in eight soil types using the batch equilibrium method and the soil column leaching method. A Freundlich model (r 2 > 0.9959) was used to better characterize the adsorption-desorption process in eight soil types, with adsorption coefficients (K F-ads ) ranging from 2.303 to 17.886. K F-ads was significantly and positively correlated (p < 0.05) with the organic carbon content. High temperatures and increased initial pH of aqueous solutions led to a decrease in benzovindiflupyr adsorption in the soil. The adsorption was also influenced by factors such as ionic strength, humic acid, surfactant type, microplastic type, and particle size and concentration. Moreover, benzovindiflupyr exhibited low leachability in all four soils selected, but different leaching solutions affected the risk of benzovindiflupyr migration to groundwater. Soil organic matter (SOM) and clay minerals are important sinks for reactive heavy metals (HMs) and exogenous hydrogen ions (H + ). Therefore, HMs are likely to be released into soil porewater under acid rainfall conditions due to the competitive adsorption of H + . However, negligible Lead, Zinc, and Cadmium (<6 ‰) in the Pb/Zn smelter soil were leached, and the effects of SOM and clay minerals on HMs leaching were unclear. Herein, the H + consumption and HMs redistribution on SOM and clay minerals were quantitated by the multi-surface model and density functional theory calculations to reveal the roles of SOM and clay minerals in alleviating HMs' leaching. Clay minerals consumed 43.2 %-52.0 % of the exogenous H + , serving as the dominant sink for the exogenous H + due to its high content and hindering H + competitive adsorption on SOM. Protonation of the functional groups constituted >90 % of the total H + captured by clay minerals. Meanwhile, some H + also competed with HMs for adsorption sites on clay minerals due to its 0.497-fold to 1.54-fold higher binding energies than HMs, resulting in the release of HMs. On the contrary, SOM served as an accommodator for taking over the released HMs from clay minerals. The HMs complexation on the low-affinity sites (R-L - ) of SOM was responsible for the recapture of HMs. In Ca-enriched soil, the released HMs were also recaptured by SOM via ion exchange on the R-L-Ca + and the high-affinity sites (R-H-Ca + ) sites due to the 30.8 %-178 % higher binding energies of HMs on these sites than those of Ca. As a result, >63.4 % of the released HMs from clay minerals were transferred to the SOM. This study evaluated the potential of an immobilization technique to inhibit the migration and dispersion of Cs-137 contaminated electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) into the environment, by investigating its compressive strength and leaching characteristics. The EAFD was employed to replace ordinary Portland cement (OPC) in varied ratios, ranging from 0 % to 50 % by weight. The replacement was done using various water-binder ratios of 0.35, 0.40, 0.45, and 0.50. Furthermore, the use of activated carbon (AC) has been shown to minimize radionuclide and heavy metal discharge related to its high porosity. AC was added at weight concentrations of 0.5 %, 1.0 %, 1.5 %, and 2.0 %. Compressive strength and leaching tests are used to assess the long-term stability of waste forms and the effectiveness of immobilizing radioactive wastes, which is beneficial for storing and disposing of radioactive waste. The compressive strength is affected by the amount of EAFD, water-to-binder ratios, the addition of AC, and the duration of curing. Measurements of specific surface area, pore size, pore volume, and porosity were also carried out under various conditions. The research results indicate that the addition of AC improves the compressive strength and decreases the release of Cs-137 and heavy metals from the specimen. Drinking water treatment sludge (DWTS) is a by-product of water treatment, and it is difficult to recycle to high value and poses potential environmental risks. Recycling DWTS into cement-based materials is an effective measure to achieve its high-volume utilization and reduce its environmental load. DWTS is rich in silica-alumina phases and has potential pozzolanic activity after drying, grinding and calcination, giving it similar properties to traditional supplementary cementitious materials. Adjusting the sludge production process and coagulant type will change its physical and chemical properties. Adding a small amount of DWTS can generate additional hydration products and refine the pore structure of the cement sample, thus improving the mechanical properties and durability of the sample. However, adding high-volume DWTS to concrete causes microstructural deterioration, but it is feasible to use high-volume DWTS to produce artificial aggregates, lightweight concrete, and sintered bricks. Meanwhile, calcined DWTS has similar compositions to clay, which makes it a potential raw material for cement clinker production. Cement-based materials can effectively solidify heavy metal ions in DWTS, and alkali-activated binders, magnesium-based cement, and carbon curing technology can further reduce the risk of heavy metal leaching. Coal combustion is the major contributor to global toxic selenium (Se) emissions. Inorganic elements in coals significantly affect Se partitioning during combustion. This work confirmed that the calcium (Ca) in ash had a stronger relationship with Se retention at 1300 °C than other major elements. Ca oxide chemically reacted with gaseous Se, and its sintering densification slightly affected Se adsorption capacities (44.45 -1840.71→35.17 -1540.15 mg/kg) at 300 - 1300 °C. Therefore, Ca in coals was identified as having potential for hindering gaseous Se emissions, and coals with increased Ca contents (2.74→5.19 wt%) were used in a 350 MW unit. The decreased Se mass distribution (3.54%→2.63%) in flue gas at air preheater inlet (320 -362 °C) confirmed the effectiveness of increased Ca content on gaseous Se emission reduction. More gaseous Se further condensed and was chemically adsorbed by fly ash when passed through an electrostatic precipitator, resulting in a significant increase in the Se content of fly ash. Additionally, the corresponding Se leaching ratio decreased from 4.88 - 35.74% to 1.87 - 26.31%, indicating enhanced stability of Se enriched in fly ash. Metakaolin-based geopolymers are very promising materials for improving the safety of low and intermediate level radioactive waste disposal, with respect to ordinary Portland cement, due to their excellent immobilization performance for Cs + and superior chemical stability. However, their application is limited by the fact that the leaching behavior of Cs + is susceptible to the presence of other ions in the environment. Here, we propose a way to modify a geopolymer using perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane (PDFS), successfully reducing the leaching rate of Cs + in the presence of multiple competitive cations due to blocking the diffusion of water. The leachability index of the modified samples in deionized water and highly concentrated saline water reached 11.0 and 8.0, respectively. The reaction mechanism between PDFS and geopolymers was systematically investigated by characterizing the microstructure and chemical bonding of the material. Low-carbon cementitious materials based on blast furnace slag (BFS) and municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash play a pivotal role in the construction industry by substituting cement clinker. This innovation significantly reduces CO 2 emissions and enables the extensive utilization of both industrial solid waste and hazardous urban waste on a large scale. However, the application of MSWI fly ash as a precursor for alkali-activated cementitious materials presents a significant leaching risk of heavy metal during the extended reaction process, posing a critical barrier to the efficient and widespread utilization of these solid waste. Three static leaching methods [horizontal vibration (HV), sulphuric acid & nitric acid (SN), and acetic acid buffer solution (AAB)], along with acid neutralization capacity (ANC) leaching tests, were applied in BFS-fly ash-based cementitious materials (BFCM) to assess the leaching behavior of high-risk elements-Cr, Sb, and Pb-within MSWI fly ash. The A4 matrix (BFS: MSWI fly ash:FGDG = 70:20:10) exhibits a compressive strength of 72.51 MPa at 180 day, with the leaching concentrations of target elements remaining below the standard limit under chemical attack (H + and OH - ). The critical pH determined is 9.2 from the ANC leaching test results. Visual MINTEQ simulation illustrates the occurrence states of Cr, Sb, and Pb as (CrO 4 ) 2- , [Sb(OH) 6 ] - , and Pb(OH) 3 within the BFCM system, respectively. The "double salt effect", intended to enhance the dissociation degree of BFS, acts as the driving force behind the long-term hydration reaction. It also serves as an assurance in controlling the long-term leaching risk of object elements. The dissociation degree of BFS within A4 matrix increased by 38.71 %, with the relative content of the typical low-solubility double salt "Ettringite" reaching 29 % at 180 d. This study provides novel theoretical and data-driven evidence to investigate the leaching behavior associated with MSWI fly ash and the accomplishment of replacing cement clinker with low-carbon BFCM.- within the BFCM system, respectively. Municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI FA) is a kind of hazardous waste that contains a substantial amount of heavy metals. To facilitate the appropriate treatment of MSWI FA, the leaching behavior of heavy metals was evaluated in MSWI FA from various sources using different leaching methods. Nine kinds of MSWI FA were investigated using three kinds of batch leaching tests (TCLP, HJ/T 300, and EN12457-2). The chemical form distributions of heavy metals in MSWI FA were obtained by sequential extraction procedures (SEPs) and the environmental risk posed by MSWI FA was comprehensively evaluated. The results showed that the grate and fluidized bed MSWI FA performed differently in various leaching methods, which was mainly dependent on the leachate pH and the chemical form distributions of the heavy metals. In addition, the BCR SEP was more suitable for the fractionation of heavy metals and the environmental risk assessment of MSWI FA when compared with Tessier's SEP. Contaminated mining soils could lead to heavy metal pollution of surrounding farmlands under rainfall conditions. With the aids of sequential extraction, batch leaching, and dynamic leaching experiments, this study was carried out to investigate the characteristics of heavy metals in contaminated mining soils, understand their leaching behavior under different rainfall conditions, and evaluate the potential effects on surrounding farmlands. The results indicated that the concentrations of heavy metals (Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb) in the contaminated mining soils were several or even twenty times higher than their corresponding background values, and Cd, Zn, Cu and Pb had considerable proportions (>50 %) in mobile forms. The leaching amounts of heavy metals from the contaminated mining soils had positive correlation with their contents in acid soluble form, and showed strong dependence on rainfall pH conditions. Acid rainfalls (pH = 4.32) can greatly increase the average annual release of Cd, Zn, Cu and Pb from mine soils in the study area, with increments ranging from 72.4 % (Pb) to 85.9 % (Cd) compared to those under alkaline conditions (pH = 7.42). The leaching of heavy metals was well fitted by two-constant, pseudo second-order and parabolic equations, indicating that their multi-layer sorption/desorption behavior on soil surface was dominated by chemical processes and their release was controlled by the diffusion within the soil pore channels. The two-column leaching experiment showed that the metal-rich leachate can lead to obvious increments of heavy metals in non-residual fractions (in particular Cd in acid soluble form) in surrounding farmlands, which would significantly raise the potential ecological risk associated with heavy metals. The release of uranium from uranium tailings into the aqueous environment is a complex process controlled by a series of interacting geochemical reactions. In this paper, uranium tailings from a uranium tailings pond in southern China were collected at different depths by means of borehole sampling and mixed to analyze the fugacity state of U. Static leaching experiments of U at different pH, oxidant concentration and solid-to-liquid ratios and dynamic leaching experiments of U at different pH were carried out, and the adsorption and desorption behaviour of U in five representative stratigraphic media were investigated. The results show that U is mainly present in the residue state in uranium tailings, that U release is strong in the lower pH range, that the leached U is mainly in the form of U(VI), mainly from the water-soluble, Fe/Mn oxides and exchangeable fraction of uranium tailings, and that the reduction in U leaching at higher pH is mainly due to the combined effect of precipitation formation and larger particle size of platelets in uranium tailings. Experiments with different oxidant concentrations and solid-liquid ratios showed that the oxygen-enriched state and low solid-liquid ratios were favorable for the leaching of U from uranium tailings. Adsorption and desorption experiments show that U is weakly adsorbed in representative strata, reversibly adsorbed, and that U is highly migratory in groundwater. Additives may be present in amounts higher than 50% within plastic objects. Additives in plastics can be gradually released from microplastics (MPs) into the aquatic environment during their aging and fragmentation because most of them do not chemically react with the polymers. Some are known to be hazardous substances, which can cause toxicity effects on organisms and pose ecological risks. In this paper, the application of functional additives in MPs and their leaching in the environment are first summarized followed by their release mechanisms including photooxidation, chemical oxidation, biochemical degradation, and physical abrasion. Important factors affecting the additive release from MPs are also reviewed. Generally, smaller particle size, light irradiation, high temperature, dissolved organic matter (DOM) existence and alkaline conditions can promote the release of chemicals from MPs. In addition, the release of additives is also influenced by the polymer's structure, electrolyte types, as well as salinity. These additives may transfer into the organisms after ingestion and disrupt various biological processes, leading to developmental malformations and toxicity in offspring. Nonetheless, challenges on the toxicity of chemicals in MPs remain hindering the risk assessment on human health from MPs in the environment. Future research is suggested to strengthen research on the leaching experiment in the actual environment, develop more techniques and analysis methods to identify leaching products, and evaluate the toxicity effects of additives from MPs based on more model organisms. The leaching of heavy metals from abandoned mine tailings can pose a severe threat to surrounding areas, especially in the regions influenced by acid rain with high frequency. In this study, the potential risks of heavy metals in the tailings collected from a small-scale abandoned multi-metal mine was assessed, and their leaching behavior and mechanism were investigated by batch, semi-dynamic and in situ leaching experiments under simulated and natural rainfall conditions. The results suggested that Zn, Cu, Pb, and Cd in the tailings could cause high/very high risks. Both batch and semi-dynamic leaching tests consistently confirmed that the leaching of heavy metals (particularly Cd) could lead to serious pollution of the surrounding environment. The leaching rates of heavy metals were pH-dependent and related to their chemical speciations in the mine tailings. The leaching behavior of Cu and Cd was dominated by surface wash-off, Zn was controlled by diffusion initially and then surface wash-off, and the leaching mechanisms of Pb and As varied with the pH conditions. It was estimated that acid rain could greatly elevate the release fluxes of Zn (20.8%), Cu (36.7%), Pb (49.9%) and Cd (35.3%) in the study area. Alkali-activation is effective municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWIFA) solidification/stabilization (S/S) technology. Percolation and migration of heavy metals in MSWIFA S/S matrix is a complicated and slow process. Here, several alkali-activated MSWIFA samples are selected to comparatively investigate the long-term leaching behavior and environmental availability of Pb, Zn and Cd when exposed in different erosion environment. Acid environment posed the more serious destroy to MSWIFA S/S matrices. RAC demonstrated that potential risk level of heavy metals is higher in acid rain environment, and Cd, Zn showed the prominent risk. When soaked in acid rain solution, the surface of alkali-activated MSWIFA S/S matrices was cracked seriously and a large number of hardened slurry peeled off. However, more stable structural properties and lower heavy metal leachability can be found in alkali-activated MSWIFA/aluminosilicate. The immobilization efficiency of Pb, Zn and Cd were all above 99.0%. Municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) fly ash poses intricate compositional challenges and potential environmental hazards. Effective management of such hazardous waste is imperative to mitigate the release of toxic compounds into the environment. Solidification/stabilization (S/S) processes have emerged as a viable strategy to transform MSWI fly ash from incineration waste into a safer and more environmentally benign material. This study aims to comprehensively investigate the potential of utilizing cow bone waste to stabilize heavy metals, focusing on Pb, within municipal solid waste incineration fly ash. Experimental investigations encompassed cow bone-to-fly ash weight ratios ranging from 0.0 (control group) to 7:3, a settling time of 2 h, and a liquid-to-solid (L/S) ratio of 1.0 mL/g. Cow bone waste exhibited pronounced efficacy, particularly within the short settling time, yielding a remarkable Pb removal efficiency of up to 99% at a cow bone waste dose of merely 2% and an L/S ratio of 1.0 mL/g. Concurrently, other heavy metals such as Cd, Cu, and Zn were effectively stabilized with a cow bone waste dose of 1.5% during the same 2-h settling period. The results underscore the pivotal roles of ash/bone ratio and settling time in augmenting Pb stabilization in MSWI fly ash. At present, the pollution of arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) is becoming increasingly serious. The pollution caused by the release of As and Pb from lead-zinc mines has seriously affected the water and soil environment and threatened human health. It is necessary to reveal the release characteristics of As and Pb. The actual scene of mine drainage (MD) and rainwater (RW) leaching waste rocks is the one of the main reasons for the release of As and Pb. However, the leaching behavior of As and Pb in these waste rocks under MD and RW suffered from a lack of in-depth research. In this study, we investigated the occurrence of As and Pb in waste rocks (S1-S6) by using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS), and then, the changes in As and Pb concentration and the hydrochemical parameter in leaching solution were systematically studied. Furthermore, the correlation between the release of As and Pb and mineral composition was also evaluated. Results showed that these waste rocks were mainly composed of carbonate and sulfide minerals. As and Pb were mainly bounded or associated with sulfide minerals such as arsenopyrite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and galena in these waste rocks, and small parts of As and Pb were absorbed or encased by clay minerals such as kaolinite and chlorite. Under MD and RW leaching, the pH, redox potential (Eh), and electric conductivity (EC) of each waste rock tended to be consistent due to their buffering ability; the leachate pH of waste rocks with more carbonate minerals was higher than that of sulfide minerals. Both As and Pb were released most under MD leaching in comparison to RW, reaching 6.57 and 60.32 mg/kg, respectively, due to MD's low pH and high Eh value. However, As in waste rock released more under alkaline conditions because part of the arsenic was in the form of arsenate. As and Pb release were mainly positively correlated with the proportions of sulfide minerals in these waste rocks. MD leaching significantly promoted the release of As and Pb from waste rocks, which would cause a great threat to the surrounding environment, and control measures were imperative. This paper not only reveals the As and Pb pollution mechanism around the lead-zinc mining area but also provides a theoretical basis for the prevention and control of As and Pb pollution in the future.

There is a recognized need to address the mismanagement of industrial by-products, as their accumulation severely threatens the environment. Efficient reutilizing of industrial waste is indispensable in realizing environment-friendly sustainable development. Towards this end, supervised adoption of controlled low-strength materials (CLSM) can be a solution. CLSM are cement-based materials which are environmentally safe, with self-levelling and self-consolidating properties. CLSM's long-term sustainable applications exclusively depend on its geo-environmental properties during and after the construction phase. This comprehensive review explores the impact of geo-environmental properties on the plastic and in-service properties of industrial by-products used for CLSM creation. It critically examines various geo-environmental properties of CLSM comprising interlaced aspects of chemical composition, mineralogical composition, leaching behavior, pH value, and thermal conductivity. It is shown that the geo-environmental properties of CLSM are determined mainly by the characteristics and content of raw materials, wastes, and the quantity of water used in the final blend. Further, the review accentuates the geo-environmental properties' detrimental effects on the plastic and in-service properties of CLSM. To remediate historically polluted sites before their land-use changes, it is essential to understand the concentration distribution, geochemical fraction, and migratory behavior of As in soil with varied particle sizes for the use of a sieving procedure. This study investigated the amount and percentage of As in soil with different particle sizes (0.25, 0.25-1, and 1-2 mm) as well as its toxicity characteristic in leaching procedure at four previously contaminated sites in the Beijiang River Basin, South China. The results showed that the total As concentration in the collected soils ranged from 70.1 to 402.8 mg/kg, and only a few percent of soil particle samples had As contents below the local risk threshold value of 60 mg/kg. The amorphous hydrous oxide bound, crystalline hydrous oxide bound, and residual fractions (F3-F5) of the geochemical fraction of As in soil of polluted sites accounted for 82.2-95.7% of the total As distribution. However, the concentration of As in non-specifically bound fractions increased with the mass ratio of soil with coarse particle sizes due to the negative correlation of Fe-bearing minerals concentration with the mass ratio of soil with coarse particle size. According to redundancy analysis, soil with coarse particle sizes and non-specifically bound As were mostly responsible for the As concentration in the leachate. Here, a novel approach to the detoxification and reuse of waste activated carbon (WAC) through co-gasification with coal-water slurry (CWS) is proposed. To evaluate the harmlessness to the environment of this method, the mineralogical composition, leaching characteristics, and geochemical distribution of heavy metals were investigated, enabling the leaching behavior of heavy metals in gasification residues to be explained. The results showed that the gasification residue of coal-waste activated carbon-slurry (CWACS) contained higher concentrations of Cr, Cu, and Zn, while those of Cd, Pb, As, Hg, and Se were well below 100 μg/g. Further, the spatial distributions of Cr, Cu, and Zn in the mineral phases of the gasification residue of CWACS were relatively uniform overall, and no obvious regional enrichment was observed. The leaching concentrations of various heavy metals in the gasification residues of the two CWACS samples were all lower than the standard limit. Following the co-gasification of WAC with CWS, the stability of the heavy metals in the environment was enhanced. This research focused on the hazardous elements in the main coal seam of Huaibei coalfield, China. Through collecting 20 feed coal samples from different coal seams of nine coal mines in the region, and combining with XRF, XRD, ICP-MS, and sequential chemical extraction, the mineral composition and the contents of major elements and HEs for feed coal were analyzed. Compared with previous research results, the enrichment characteristics of HEs in feed coal were revealed. The leaching behaviors of Se, Hg, and Pb in feed coal and coal ash under different leaching conditions were analyzed in depth by using a leaching device independently developed. Results showed that, compared with Chinese coals and World coals, the content of other elements, except Se, Sb, Hg, and Pb, in feed coal of Huaibei coalfield were at the "Normal" level, and no "Low" level elements were found; as the acidity of leaching solution decreased, the relative leaching rate of Se ( L Se ) was gradually increasing, while the L Hg and L Pb were not obvious; the L Se in feed coal and coal ash had a great relationship with the modes of occurrence of Se. The difference in the Hg content in the ion exchange state in feed coal may be an important reason for the difference in Hg leaching behavior. However, the content of Pb in feed coal had little influence on its leaching behavior. The modes of occurrence of Pb determined that the L Pb in feed coal and coal ash was not high. The L Se increased with the increase in acidity of leaching solution and leaching time. The leaching time was the main influencing factor of the L Hg and L Pb .

This study investigated the influence of the interaction between Fe-based substances and thermal treatment parameters on the leaching behavior of Cr in hazardous waste incineration fly ash (HWIFA) after thermal treatment. The results revealed that the interaction between the addition of Fe-based substance and the thermal treatment parameters and their effects on static and dynamic leaching behaviors of Cr had significant differences when Fe 2 O 3 , Fe 3 O 4 , and Fe were added, respectively. Specifically, when Fe 2 O 3 or Fe was added, the thermal treatment temperature was the most significant factor affecting the static leaching of Cr in thermal treated HWIFA, and the interaction effect of other factors was not significant. The most important influence on the dynamic leaching behavior of Cr was the interaction between the thermal treatment temperature and the addition of Fe 2 O 3 . Different from the addition of Fe 2 O 3 , the effect of the addition of Fe 3 O 4 on the static leaching of Cr in thermal treated HWIFA was more significant than that of thermal treatment temperature; meanwhile, the interaction between the thermal treatment temperature and the addition of Fe 3 O 4 was also significant. However, when Fe 3 O 4 was added, the effect of interaction between factors on the dynamic leaching of Cr in thermal treated HWIFA was consistent with that when Fe 2 O 3 was added., (© 2022. Phosphoric acid manufacturing generates large amounts of phosphogypsum (PG); a by-product generally disposed in the surface or evacuated in the seawater without any pretreatment. Phosphogypsum may host non-negligible amounts of valuable elements such as rare earth elements (REEs), which are critical elements on the global market. Surface disposal of PG may be a sustainable option to allow further processing in order to recover valuable elements. However, surface disposal exposes PG to atmospheric conditions (e.g., water, oxygen) which may increase their reactivity and accelerate the release rate of chemical species. This study aims to evaluate the trace element release rate from PG at atmospheric conditions. The studied PG samples were collected from a Moroccan phosphate treatment plant. The samples were characterized for their (i) chemical composition using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) for major elements and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for trace elements; (ii) mineralogical composition by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope equipped with energy-dispersive spectrometer (SEM-EDS), laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), and the mineral chemical composition was analyzed by electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS); and (iii) chemical species release rate using leaching tests over 24 h at 25 and 60 °C. Chemically, the PG samples were mainly composed of Ca (23.03-23.35 wt.%), S (17.65-17.71 wt.%), and Si (0.75-0.82 wt.%), and non-negligible amounts of trace elements: REE (344-349 ppm), Cd (3.5-7.4 ppm), U (9.3-27.4 ppm). Mineralogically, the PGs are mainly formed by gypsum (94.2-95.9 wt.%) and quartz (1.67-1.76 wt.%). In terms of chemical species release, the PGs showed a higher reactivity at 60 °C compared to room temperature with a higher release rate at the beginning of the leaching tests. Quantitatively, the PG samples released 3.57-4.11 µg/L/day of REE, 3.18-17.29 µg/L/day of U, and 1.67-5.49 µg/L/day of Cd. Based on the leaching results, we concluded that the trace elements (e.g., U, Cd, REE) are incorporated in PG crystal lattice, which may explain their low concentrations in the leachates. After thermal desorption, the total amount of heavy metals (HMs) is enriched in baghouse filter dust. To further understand the related environmental impact, the leaching characteristics under various conditions must be explored. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the leaching characteristics of seven HMs in the dust generated in the direct-fired thermal desorption process and to compare the differences in heavy metal leaching characteristics in the soil before and after thermal desorption. The leaching characteristics and bioaccessibility of seven HMs-arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn)-were analyzed in dust and in soil before and after thermal desorption. The activity of HMs in dust was strong. Therefore, environmental effects and effects on human health should be considered in the treatment of soil and dust after thermal desorption.

Phosphogypsum (PG) is a massively generated hazardous by-product in the phosphorus industry. Large-scale, efficient, profitable on-site recycling is an emerging topic for promoting sustainable phosphorus circularity and mitigating potential human exposure. In this work, we integrated a green and low-cost additive polymeric aluminum chloride (PAC) into the binder design of PG immobilization. The overall experimental results illustrate that the incorporation of PAC can efficiently promote the cement hydration reaction, with amorphous phases increased from 25.9 wt% (control group) to 27.5 wt% (with 2 g/L PAC). The macro-investigations indicate that the PAC optimized the porosity and mechanical properties of specimens, facilitating a mechanically stable solidified matrix for extrapolating its field engineering application. The detailed micrographs and elemental mapping demonstrate that apart from co-existing with the hydration products, the PAC agent plays a role in the immobilization of fluoride. Herein, the combined optimization enhanced the fluoride retention capacity due to the precipitated additional hydration products, comparable encapsulation, and high adsorption ability of PAC agents. The solidification/stabilization of phosphogypsum using cemented paste backfill (OCPB) provides a low-cost and alternative in-situ technique for recycling phosphogypsum stockpiles. But the OCPB is far from obtaining steady states in which the pollutants would redistribute as a response to dynamic environmental conditions. Further, the associated chemical interactions and the mineralogy information of the solubility-controlling phases of contaminants (fluorine and phosphorus) have not been thoroughly studied or fully understood. In this study, a framework coupling the chemical, mineralogical, and morphological analyses is used to determine the fluoride and phosphate retention mechanisms of immobilized OCPB. Then the pH-dependent leaching tests and numerical simulation is applied as a useful tool to identify the minerals controlling stabilized OCPB leaching behavior. The overall findings proved that aluminate-rich calcium silicate hydrates play an essential role in fluoride and phosphate retention. Both experimental and simulational acid neutralization and leaching curves indicate that the cementitious matrix works as a strong buffering material ensuring high pH conditions that are necessary for fluorine and phosphorus retention. Although discrepancies were observed in absolute fluorine and phosphorus leaching values at highly acidic conditions, the simulations are able to describe highly amphoteric leaching behavior. The simulation suggests that the aluminum species and calcium phosphates governed the solubility of fluorine and phosphorus, respectively. Three primary mechanisms (adsorption to iron oxides or analogous surfaces, co-precipitation with Ca, and substitution in ettringite) controlling oxyanion retention in coal fly ashes (CFAs) were identified by differentiating the leaching behavior of As, B, Cr, Mo, Se, and V from 30 CFAs. Fidelity evaluation of geochemical speciation modeling focused on six reference CFAs representing a range of CFA compositions, whereby different leaching-controlling mechanisms of oxyanions were systematically considered. For three reference CFAs with low Ca and S content, calibration of adsorption reactions for the diffuse double-layer model for hydrous ferric oxides improved the simultaneous prediction of oxyanion leaching, which reduced uncertainties in Se and V predictions caused by nonideal adsorption surfaces and competitive adsorption effects. For two reference CFAs with intermediate Ca content, the solubility constants for Ca-arsenates from literature and postulated phases of B, Cr, Se, and V were used to describe co-precipitation of oxyanions with Ca-bearing minerals under alkaline conditions. For the reference CFA with high Ca and S content, an ettringite solid solution was used to capture the simultaneous retention of all oxyanions at pH> 9.5. Thermal treatment technology considerably affects the harmlessness of fly ash (FA), but highly toxic heavy metals, such as Cr, attract considerable attention. In this study, we investigated the influence of CaO dosage at 600°C-1200 °C on the curing effect of Cr during FA thermal treatment based on the combination effect of CaO. Static, dynamic, and continuous sequential leachings were performed for the sintered products. Results showed that the leaching concentration of Cr decreased by approximately 91% when CaO dosage was 8.57%, and the difference in the residual state was the main reason for the difference in the leaching behavior of Cr. The proportion of the residual state in the sintered products increased from 35.16% to 64.01%. The transition between Cr 2 O 3 , Cr 5 O 12 , and CaCr 2 O 4 is the fundamental reason for the leaching behavior of Cr and the change in the residual state. The coal gasification fine slag (CGFS) from the entrained-flow coal gasification unit faces the challenge of safe disposal and clean utilization in the Ningdong region, China. This study aims to provide complete and thorough understanding of the distribution features, chemical speciation, environmental impact, and leaching behavior of typical heavy metals (i.e., V, Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ba, and Pb) in the CGFS with different size fractions. The results show that the distribution of selected heavy metals in the CGFS has evident particle size dependence. Except for Zn, the other heavy metals in different size fractions mainly exist in chemical speciation of residual form with the ratio of 50.11-86.69 wt%. Moreover, it is found that the heavy metals in the different-sized CGFS show different RAC (risk assessment code) environmental risk levels and TCLP (Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure) leaching concentrations. Especially, Zn in SGFS-C and SGFS-D posed a high-risk level to the environment, while the heavy metal elements of Cr, Mn, Ni, Zn, and Ba in other size fractions are classified as a medium environmental risk. In addition, the TCLP test results indicate that the leaching concentration of Cr, Mn, Ni, Zn, Ba, and Pb exceeds the groundwater-related regulatory limit in China. The pH-dependent leaching experiments suggest that Pb shows the amphoteric behavior, while the leaching mode of other heavy metals seems to be the cationic pattern. Furthermore, the leachability of the selected heavy metals in small-size fractions of the CGFS should be given more consideration at both acid and alkaline pH ranges. A closed coal ash impoundment case study characterized the effects of field redox conditions on arsenic and selenium partitioning through monitoring of porewater and subsurface gas in conjunction with geochemical speciation modeling. When disposed coal ash materials and porewater were recovered for testing, oxidation led to lower arsenic and higher selenium concentrations in leaching test extracts compared to porewater measurements. Multiple lines of evidence suggest multiple mechanisms of arsenic retention are plausible and the concurrent presence of several redox processes and conditions (e.g., methanogenesis, sulfate reduction, and Fe(III)-reduction) controlled by spatial gradients and dis-equilibrium. Geochemical speciation modeling indicated that, under reducing field conditions, selenium was immobilized through the formation of insoluble precipitates Se(0) or FeSe while arsenic partitioning was affected by a progression of reactions including changes in arsenic speciation, reduction in adsorption due to dissolution and recrystallization of hydrous ferric oxides, and precipitation of arsenic sulfide minerals., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier B.V. Oxaziclomefone is an organic heterocyclic herbicide which has been widely used in rice fields. The aim of this paper is to investigate the adsorption-desorption and migration of oxaziclomefone in four Chinese agricultural soils. All the four soils show high adsorption capacity for oxaziclomefone, with similar adsorption rates at 84.48%-96.70%. Four adsorption kinetic models were used to fit the adsorption kinetic characteristics and the elovich model was the best, indicating that chemical processes were involved in adsorption. For the isothermal adsorption behavior of oxaziclomefone, the Freundlich model shows the best, indicating that the adsorption sites for oxaziclomefone in soil were heterogeneous. The retention factor in the soil thin-layer plates ranges from 0.083 to 0.250 and the retention factor 0-10 cm layer of the soil column was > 50, indicating that the herbicide was not easily migration from all four soils. Because oxaziclomefone has low mobility in different soils and is not easily leached, it poses a low potential threat of contaminating surface water and groundwater., (© 2022. High-fluorine alkali-free liquid accelerator (AF -hf , F - concentration was about 2.31g/L) was still used in engineering because of its low cost, excellent stability, and coagulation-promoting effect. The main purpose of this study was to explore the leaching behavior of fluorine ions in shotcrete for tunnel lining with high-fluorine alkali-free liquid accelerator and whether there was fluoride pollution. The setting time and mechanical properties of cement paste and mortar with AF -hf were tested. Under different environmental conditions, F - leaching concentration from sprayed concrete was studied comparatively. Moreover, XRD and SEM were used to analyze the crystal composition and micro morphology of hydration products. The experimental results showed that with the increase of AF -hf dosage, the setting time of cement paste was greatly shortened, and later strength of mortar and shotcrete could meet the construction requirements. In addition, when the leaching solution type (including Na 2 CO 3 , Na 3 PO 4 , Na 2 SO 4 , and NaNO 3 ) and testing conditions (particle size, soaking temperature, leaching solutions) were different, F - leaching concentration changed regularly, and the minimum value was more than 20 mg/L, which might cause fluorine pollution to groundwater and soil. After shotcrete samples were soaked, the CaF 2 peaks' intensity was relatively weaker and Ca(OH) 2 decreased obviously. Benzimidazoles are anthelmintics frequently used in sheep farming due to the high susceptibility of these animals to parasitic diseases. Sheep excreta are often disposed onto soils as a fertilizer, and they may contain benzimidazole residues that can contaminate soil and water. This work aimed to assess the leaching behavior of benzimidazole drugs (albendazole, fenbendazole, and thiabendazole) and their metabolites in two Brazilian soils of different textural classifications (sandy and clay), as well as sheep excreta-amended soils, following the OECD 312 Guidelines. Ewes received a single oral dose of 10 mg kg -1 b.w. of either albendazole or fenbendazole. The feces were collected at 24, 48, 72, 96, and 120 h post-dose, and the parent drugs and their metabolites extracted using the QuEChERS approach and quantified by UHPLC-MS/MS. For the leaching assays, a benzimidazole solution was directly applied onto the soil columns, or an amount of 5 g of the medicated sheep feces was distributed over the top of the soil columns. In soil samples, benzimidazoles were extracted by solid-liquid extraction and quantified by UHPLC-MS/MS. For the leaching studies, atrazine was used as a reference substance to determine the relative mobility factor of the analytes of interest. Benzimidazoles were considered slightly to moderately mobile in both soils tested, with a leaching distance of up to 25 cm in a 30-cm soil column. Approximately 3 to 6% of the benzimidazoles present in ewe feces were able to leach into the soil columns. This finding is of concern since benzimidazoles are persistent in soil and may pose a risk to soil biota and induce the development of resistant strains of parasites., (© 2020. Cuttings are the main solid residues which are generated from drilling operations. Due to the presence of heavy and radioactive elements, the environment risk posed by cuttings has attracted increasing attention. In this work, a short-term static immersion experiment was carried out to investigate the leaching of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from oil-based residues of shale gas drilling cuttings. Furthermore, the effects of some relevant environmental factors controlling the leaching behavior were evaluated, including the different particle sizes, pH, extraction time, solid-to-liquid (S/L) ratio and dissolved organic matter (DOM) concentration. The results showed that (1) the concentrations of leached PAHs gradually increased with prolonged leaching time, but the cumulative amount of PAHs released during leaching was less than 3% of the total. (2) The Elovich, parabolic diffusion and power function models were found to fit the experimental data better than the first-order kinetic equation, indicating that the leaching of PAHs was controlled by the coupling of diffusion and chemical reactions at the source surface. (3) Different environmental factors had different impacts on the leaching of PAHs: the shaking time and presence of DOM increased leachability, the particle size and S/L ratio decreased leachability, and the pH did not affect the leachability of PAHs. Incineration technology has been widely employed, as an effective method to decrease the volume of waste disposal. In this review, relationships between municipal solid waste (MSW) inputs and residues after combustion-specifically, the incineration bottom ashes (IBA) of MSW, were discussed, with an emphasis on the geoenvironmental impacts of IBA associated with the complex crystal and amorphous phase reactions and changes during combustion and from their downstream treatments, whereas, their influences on IBA leaching behaviors are considered as another focus. This review summarizes the IBA leaching behaviors based on literature, showing the leaching variabilities induced by natural weathering and artificial intervention conditions, such as accelerated carbonation, washing treatment, stabilization/solidification, and thermal treatments, all of which can be attributed to changes of mineral phases and microstructure. The arsenic long-term leaching behavior of the cemented paste backfill obtained from the construction and demolition waste (CPB-CDW) is captured, which can be utilized in the potential engineering application. Laboratory studies were conducted on samples obtained from a mining site and the test results were imported into a numerical simulation model. It was found that the Elovich equation can describe well the As leaching behavior. Initially, the As concentrations decreased in the roadway in the mine and then increased along the roadway and attained a maximum concentration (8.149 × 10 -3 mg/L) at the lower segment. When the groundwater was in the static mode, the As concentration increased dramatically followed by a gradual increase. Eventually, the concentration decreased gradually. For the dynamic condition, the As tended to move in a cluster form and the associated leaching and mass transfer process of As in the CPB-CDW were similar to those observed when the groundwater was in a static condition. However, the difference in the distribution of the amount of As in the leachate fluctuated continuously and the overall trend was to approach a steady state. Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash has become a challenge for waste management because it is rich in heavy metals and its output is increasing sharply year by year. A novel binder system for MSWI fly ash solidification/stabilization was produced by blending MgO and silica fume in this work. And several tests including compressive strength, toxicity leaching behavior, hydration products, pore structure and micromorphology of MgO-SiO 2 -H 2 O (M-S-H) binders without and with MSWI fly ash were conducted. Results showed that the compressive strength of MSWI fly ash-blended samples varied from 1.8 MPa to 29.3 MPa, and the maximum leaching concentration of Pb, Zn and Cd were 0.052 mg/L, 1.02 mg/L, 0.098 mg/L, which all met the national standard limitation on the landfill site. Besides, M-S-H binders could buffer against the harsh acid environment at a certain degree, which would provide a proper low alkalinity environment for immobilization of heavy metals such as Pb, Zn and Cd in MSWI fly ash. Meanwhile, the microstructure and morphology characteristics analysis results demonstrated that the favorable ion exchange and high specific surface area of hydration product contributed much to the excellent immobilization and adsorption characteristics on heavy metals, so it can be deduced that M-S-H binders mainly fixed the heavy metals by the physical encapsulation and chemical bonding. In this study, we introduce a simple screening method to predict the metal release from biostabilized wastes as a function of the total organic carbon (TOC) content of the sample. The method relies on a model that simulates the release of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) as a function of the applied liquid to solid (L/S) ratio. The metal release is then estimated using generic empirical DOC to metal correlation coefficients (K DOC,Me ) extrapolated from the literature. Specifically, the results of leaching tests carried out on different types of biowastes and biostabilized wastes were used to calculate the upper and lower K DOC,Me values that can be expected for common metals of concern (Al, Ba, Cr, Cu, Mo, Ni, Pb, V, and Zn). The statistical analysis of the estimated empirical coefficients highlighted that for most of the investigated metals, the adoption of generic DOC to metal correlation coefficients introduces relatively low uncertainties. The quartiles ratio (QR calculated as the ratio of third and first quartile) of the K DOC,Me coefficients extrapolated from the literature was indeed below 3 for Cu, Ni, and Zn and below 5 for Al, Ba, Cr, Pb, and V. Only for Mo, the QR was around 10 indicating that for this element, DOC can be a poor indicator of the release expected as a function of the applied L/S. Furthermore, by performing a sensitivity analysis, we found that the experimental conditions only slightly influence the metals release predicted by the model. Based on this evidence, simple nomograms that estimate the cumulative metal release in percolation column tests as a function of the applied L/S are provided. Furthermore, a simple equation that predicts the cumulative metal release expected at L/S of 10 L/kg is presented. The application of the latter to the results of percolation column tests carried out on 8 mechanical biological treatment (MBT) waste samples highlighted that the predicted metals release was close to the measured values with deviations within a factor of 5 for all the investigated metals.

Bisphenol A polycarbonate (BPA-PC) is a kind of widely used engineering plastics. However, excessive usage causes the production of plastic wastes, following property changes of polymers and high risks of released chemicals during outdoor weathering. In this study, we systematically investigated the photoaging behavior of PC microplastics (MPs) in aquatic environment and evaluated the potential risk of released intermediates. Light irradiation along with mechanical abrasion facilitated the fragmentation of PC MPs and stimulated photooxidative modification during 640 h of ultraviolet (UV) exposure. Continuous degradation of the polymer was accompanied with dramatic decline of molecular weight. Also, BPA was released from irradiated PC MPs with a trend of an initial rapid increase followed by a decrease versus the irradiation time, and the maximum concentration of dropped BPA was detected up to 652.80 ± 72.89 μg/g (43.39% and 56.61% respectively in particles and leachates). However, the releasing amount of BPA in the leachate merely occupied 2.7% of the total organic carbon (TOC) leached out, suggesting that a great number of unknown organic products were produced other than BPA. Liquid chromatography-time-of-flight-mass spectrometry (LC-TOF-MS) analysis showed that these organic compounds forming MPs-derived dissolved organic matter (MPs DOM) were partly composed of 4,4'-dihydroxybenzophenone (DHB), p-hydroxybenzoic acid (p-HBA) and methyparaben (MeP), which would also contribute to the estrogenic activity. The degradation pathway of PC MPs was elaborated with the photolysis process of PC dimer and BPA, and the remarkable photoaging of PC MPs was mainly dominated by the generated reactive oxygen species (ROS). Mercury (Hg) that leaches from municipal sewage sludge (MSS) landfill under natural rain is of increasing concern. The column leaching experiments were conducted to investigate the leaching characteristics of total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) as well as pH, total organic carbon (TOC), and total suspended solids (TSS) in the raw sludge (RS) and lime-conditioned sludge (LCS) under simulated rain with different acidities (pH 6.5 and 2.9). Results showed the release of MeHg in the leachates presented different patterns from THg. And the final amounts of MeHg in the MSS columns were 1.49 (RS at pH = 6.5), 1.88 (RS at 2.9), 1.97 (LCS at pH = 6.5), and 2.06 times (LCS at pH = 2.9) higher than the initial amounts, suggesting methylation of inorganic Hg (IHg) occurred in the leaching process. The leaching efficiencies of THg and MeHg in RS was lower than that in LCS, indicating lime was more favorable for the release of THg and MeHg. And lower values of pH of the simulated rain promoted the release of THg and MeHg from RS while the opposite was true for LCS. Tannery sludge usually has high content of trivalent chromium (Cr(III)) and ammonium-nitrogen (NH 4 + -N). It is important to make a critical evaluation of the releasing behaviors of Cr(III) and NH 4 + -N from tannery sludge before its use on improving soil fertility in agricultural applications. For this purpose, static batch and dynamic leaching experiments with different mathematical models were carried out to simulate the Cr(III) and NH 4 + -N releasing kinetics from tannery sludge sampled in a typical tannery disposal site in North China, and their influencing factors were also discussed. The results showed that a larger solid-liquid ratio, a higher temperature, and a lower pH value of the leaching solution were beneficial for the release of Cr(III) and NH 4 + -N from the tannery sludge. The release kinetics of Cr(III) and NH 4 + -N followed parabolic diffusion and simple Elovich models both in the static and dynamic leaching conditions, indicating that the release was a complex heterogeneous diffusion process. The NH 4 + -N was easy to be leached out and its released amount reached 3.14 mg/g under the dynamic leaching condition (pH 7), whereas the released amount of the Cr(III) was only 0.27 μg/g from the tannery sludge. There was a positive correlation coefficient between dissolved Fe and Cr(III) in the leachate under different leaching conditions, and the calculated average ratio of Fe/Cr(III) concentration was 3.56, indicating that the small amount of the released Cr(III) came from the dissolution of Cr 0.25 Fe 0.75 (OH) 3 minerals in tannery sludge., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

In Japan, approximately 64% of municipal solid waste incineration bottom ash (MSWI BA) is landfilled. Because landfills in Japan are operated without capping, the landfill body is directly exposed to climatic events. Increased frequency of heavy rain is predicted to affect the chemical stabilization of bottom ash (BA) landfill, as rainwater seeps into and interacts with landfill components. This study examined the effect of normal rainfall (15 mm/h) and heavy rainfall (25, 50, and 100 mm/h) events on the leaching behavior of ions (Cl - , Na + , K + , and Ca 2+ ) and total organic carbon (TOC) in BA (<10 mm particle size) using a percolation column test. The results showed the decreased leaching of leachate components after heavy rainfall and increased leaching after normal rainfall. In addition, the pH fluctuated around 11-12 after heavy rainfall but decreased to 7-9 after normal rainfall. The carbonation of the leachate and BA layers appears to be the main factor in lowering the pH value. Changes in the TOC and ion concentrations can be explained by dissolution, dilution, and the contact time of water molecules and BA particles. The data showed that the cumulative TOC and ion release rates were not affected by heavy rain intensities. The release rate of leachate components during normal rainfall was higher than that in heavy rainfall in all the scenarios. The leaching behavior of five additives, including citric acid (CA), wood vinegar (WV), 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP), polyaspartic acid (PASP) and FeCl 3 , was investigated to evaluate the possibility of enhanced phytoextraction of Pennisetum sp. from cadmium-contaminated soil. FeCl 3 and CA have the highest leaching potential due to the ability that could convert large amounts of mobile fractions of Cd. The pot experiment showed that HEDP, WV, and PASP treatments could not only significantly increase the biomass of Pennisetum sp., but also maintain high uptake capacity of Cd by activating the stable fractions. HEDP has the highest Cd extraction efficiency and metal extraction ratio (MER) value. The phytoremediation efficiency could be improved mainly by increasing the biomass of the tolerant shoots, and Pennisetum sp. seems to have the maximum potential of phytoextraction to Cd with HEDP which could achieve a higher phytoextraction effect than Cd-hyperaccumulator.

While paint coatings act as important barriers to corrosion, defects can lead to localized, rapid metal loss. The addition of corrosion inhibitors that are capable of leaching from a coating to protect the metal surface at a defect can prevent this type of corrosion. This work investigates the release and corrosion protection capabilities of two rare earth (RE) carboxylate inhibitors from an epoxy coating as an initial step to understanding their leaching behavior and interaction with the coating system. Leaching experiments were performed via inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS) analyses of the solutions in which free-standing coatings loaded with varying concentrations of inhibitor compounds had been immersed. Inhibitor release from the epoxy coating was observed to be dependent on initial inhibitor concentration, inhibitor chemistry, and solution pH conditions. The coating systems with greater initial inhibitor loadings showed higher leaching rates, particularly in acidic environments. Following immersion, the absence of characteristic inhibitor peaks in the FTIR spectra of the coatings also confirmed leaching had taken place. Cross-sectional views of the coatings after exposure to the pH 1 environment presented a chloride infusion zone at the coating/solution interface where the inhibitor had leached out. The RE active inhibition provided by the leached RE carboxylate inhibitors was verified by exposure of a coating defect to a chloride contaminated environment.

Chemical additives leaching from microplastics and their effects on physiology of microalgae are of environmental significance. So far, these issues remain unclear. Here, the leaching behavior of fluorescent additives from polyurethane sponge microplastics in simulated (acidic, saline, and basic water) and natural waters (river, lake, wetland, and sea water) was investigated. Release amount of additives increased with increasing solution pH and leaching time. The maximum release amount was reached at the leaching time of 12-24 h and the 3,3'-diaminobenzidine-like substances were identified in the leachate. The leached concentrations of fluorescent additives in simulated and natural waters followed the order of basic water > saline water > seawater > West Lake > River > Wetland. Effects of leachate and microplastics on growth and photosynthesis of Chlorella vulgaris were further evaluated. The maximum quantum efficiency of photosystem II (F v /F m ) decreased with increasing leachate concentrations. Only high content (1.6 g L -1 ) of microplastics exerted significant inhibitory influence on cell photosynthesis when microalgae were exposed to microplastics alone. Retention of algal cells inside the porous sponge microplastics did not change their photosynthetic efficiency. In this study, the mixing mechanism and phase transition process of different metals during the sintering of tailings bricks with four different metal oxides (CuO, PbO, ZnO, and CdO) at temperatures ranging from 700 to 1100 °C for 2 h were investigated. The properties of the sintered product was characterized and analyzed, and the results showed that the main crystalline phases are quartz, cristobalite, hematite, and mullite while the metal oxides are ascribed to copper ferrite spinel (CuFe 2 O 4 ), gahnite (ZnAl 2 O 4 ), zinc ferrite spinel (ZnFe 2 O 4 ), lead feldspar (PbAl 2 Si 2 O 8 ), and cadmium feldspar (CdAl 2 Si 2 O 8 ). Further analysis indicates that the heavy metals were transited into spinel or silicate structures with favorable efficiency. This indicates a good heavy-metal fixation effect from the structural change after the sintering process. Finally, the leaching experiments of the sintered samples suggest that the metal leaching decreased to a low and stable value when the sintering temperature was higher than 950 °C, which meets the China standard (GB 5085.3-2007). The above results indicate that the sintering process facilitates the combination of Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd offering an effective and safe method for the application of materials that contain tailings., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd.
