Developing catalysts with excellent CO 2 capture capability and electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) at a wide potential range simultaneously is significant but remains a formidable challenge. Here, two novel InMg defective trinuclear cluster-based MOFs (SNNU-41 and SNNU-42) with abundant p -block unsaturated coordinated sites were reported and exhibited good CO 2 capture and CO 2 RR performance simultaneously. Due to the suitable micropores, SNNU-41 showed higher CO 2 capture ability at different adsorption pressure conditions. On account of the rigid framework and the closer p band center to Fermi level, SNNU-42 accelerated the conversion of CO 2 molecule to C1 efficiency. Notably, via adjusting the ratio of p -block metal (In) in the SNNU-42 framework, the performance of the CO 2 RR was promoted drastically. SNNU-42 with the InMg (1:1.8) mixed cluster delivered an excellent Faradaic efficiency of 91.3% for C1 products and high selectivity of 72.0% for HCOOH at -2.5 V (vs Ag/Ag + ) with a total current density of 77.2 mA cm -2 . This work provides a possibility for efficient CO 2 capture and CO 2 RR electrocatalysts through the modulation of electronic structures and composition in MOFs.

Recovery of light alkanes from natural gas is of great significance in petrochemical production. Herein, a promising strategy utilizing two types of size-complementary aromatic ring-confined nanotraps (called bi-nanotraps here) is proposed to efficiently trap ethane (C 2 H 6 ) and propane (C 3 H 8 ) selectively at their respective sites. Two isostructural metal-organic frameworks (MOFs, SNNU-185/186), each containing bi-nanotraps decorated with six aromatic rings, are selected to demonstrate the feasibility of this method. The smaller nanotrap acts as adsorption sites tailored for C 2 H 6 while the larger one is optimized in size for C 3 H 8 . The separation is further facilitated by the large channels, which serve as mass transfer pathways. These advanced features give rise to multiple C-H⋯π interactions and size/shape-selective interaction sites, enabling SNNU-185/186 to achieve high C 2 H 6 adsorption enthalpy (43.5/48.8 kJ mol -1 ) and a very large thermodynamic interaction difference between C 2 H 6 and CH 4 . Benefiting from the bi-nanotrap effect, SNNU-185/186 exhibits benchmark experimental natural gas upgrade performance with top-level CH 4 productivity (6.85/6.10 mmol g -1 ), ultra-high purity and first-class capture capacity for C 2 H 6 (1.23/0.90 mmol g -1 ) and C 3 H 8 (2.33/2.15 mmol g -1 )., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Background: Maternal feeding practices play a major role in children's dietary intakes. However, there is limited data on the associations between trajectories of dietary patterns (DPs) and patterns of maternal feeding practices during early childhood., Methods: Using data from a multi-ethnic Asian cohort study, namely the Growing Up in Singapore Towards healthy Outcomes (GUSTO), dietary intakes were measured using Food Frequency Questionnaires in children at 18 months, 5 and 7 years of age. Maternal feeding practices were assessed using validated questionnaires at 15 months, 3 and 5 years of age. Principal component analysis was used to derive 2 major DPs at all time-points as well as patterns of maternal feeding practices. Group-based trajectory modelling was used to identify trajectory groups for the derived DPs. Multivariable logistic regression examined associations between patterns of maternal feeding practices and DP trajectory groups., Results: Two DPs, namely the 'healthy' and 'less healthy' were consistently derived at 18 months, 5 and 7 years of age. From each DP, 2 stable DP trajectory groups were further identified between 18 months and 7 years of age. For the 'healthy' DP trajectory, majority of the children (Group 1) formed a consistent average adherence trajectory group (91.8%) while the remaining children (Group 2) showed a higher but decreasing adherence (8.2%) to this DP. For the 'less healthy' DP trajectory, most children (Group 1) formed a consistent average adherence trajectory (95.5%), while the remainder (Group 2) showed consistent higher adherence to this 'less healthy' DP (4.5%). Two patterns of maternal feeding practices were derived and labelled as 'structured with autonomy support' and 'coercive control', respectively, at ages 15 months, 3 and 5 years. Children whose mothers showed high adherence to the structured with autonomy support feeding practices at age 5 years were significantly more likely to be associated with the higher but decreasing 'healthy' DP trajectory group [OR = 3.62 (95% CI: 1.64, 7.99)]., Conclusions: A small number of children in this multi-ethnic study showed high adherence to the 'healthy' or 'less healthy' DP trajectory groups, respectively, while the majority showed average adherence to either of these trajectories. The global expansion of domesticated plant and animal species has profoundly impacted biodiversity and ecosystem functions. However, the spillover effect of non-native honey bees from mass-flowering crops into adjacent natural vegetation on pollination function within plant communities remains unclear. To address this, we conduct field experiments to investigate the ecological impacts of honey bees (Apis mellifera) and a mass-flowering crop (Brassica rapa var. oleifera) on pollinator communities, plant-pollinator interactions, and reproductive performance of wild plants in 48 pollinator-limited alpine grasslands. Our findings indicate that the transition of dominant pollinators from flies to honey bees enhances visitation fidelity of pollinator species and reconfigures pollination interactions due to an increase in competition between honey bees and native pollinator species. Additionally, honey bees increase, decrease or do not alter plant reproductive success, depending on the plant species. Phthalates (PAEs) are synthetic compounds extensively employed in consumer products. Blood pressure (BP) in children can vary, the degree of visit-to-visit BP variability (VVV) is at least partially independent of BP. The interactions between PAEs exposure, pubertal-related genetic susceptibility and lifestyles on childhood VVV are not investigated. This study utilized data from a cohort collected from Oct 2017-2020 in Xiamen, China. Seven urine PAE metabolites were measured. The long-term VVV was characterized employing the standard deviation (SD) and average real variability. We constructed a genetic risk score (GRS) of pubertal-related genes and healthy lifestyle scores. Exposed to high levels of mono-2-ethyl-5-hydroxyhexyl phthalate (MEHHP) (OR=1.43, 95 %CI=1.07, 1.92) and mono-2-ethyl-5-oxohexyl phthalate (OR=1.36, 95 % CI=1.01, 1.83) was related to increased SBP-SD, and the OR for high SBP-SD related to high GRS was 1.38 (95 % CI=1.02, 1.85). Compared to participants who had low GRS and low MEHHP exposure, participants exhibiting high GRS and MEHHP levels were more likely to experience high SBP-SD (OR=2.00, P<0.05). Individuals exhibiting low GRS, low MEHHP levels, and adhering to healthy lifestyles were associated with the least probability of experiencing high SBP-SD (OR=0.31, P<0.05). Increased PAEs exposure could elevate childhood systolic VVV, and exacerbated the adverse impact of pubertal-related genetic susceptibility on the high VVV of SBP; however, healthy lifestyles might alleviate these adverse effects. Promoting healthy lifestyles and reducing PAEs exposure for preventing elevated BP variability among children is important, especially for individuals with greater genetic susceptibility to early pubertal onset. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: Blood pressure (BP) in children can vary, as a noninvasive, inexpensive and applicable method, the extent of visit-to-visit variability (VVV) is at least partially independent of BP. Inherently chiral calixarenes have garnered significant attention due to their distinctive properties, yet the development of efficient catalytic asymmetric synthesis methods remains a critical challenge. Herein, we report the asymmetric synthesis of calix[4]arenes featuring inherent or both inherent and axial chirality via a cobalt-catalyzed C-H activation/annulation strategy in high yield with excellent enantio- and diastereoselectivity (up to > 99% ee and > 20:1 dr). Electrooxidation was also suitable for this transformation to obviate the sacrificial metal oxidants, underscoring the environmentally friendly potential of this approach. A key octahedral cobaltacycle intermediate was synthesized and characterized, providing valuable insights into the mode of enantio- and diastereocontrol of this protocol. Context and Results: The structure, mechanical, electronic, vibration, and hydrogen bonding properties of a novel high-energy and low-sensitivity 5, 5'-dinitroamino-3, 3'-azo-oxadiazole 4, 7-diaminopyridazino [4, 5-c] furoxan salt have been studied by density functional theory. The calculated vibrational properties show that the low-frequency mode is mainly contributed by the vibration of the -NO2 group, and the high-frequency mode is mainly contributed by the vibration of the -NH2 group and the N7-H3 bond which protonates the cation. In addition, it is analyzed that the first bond to break may be the N-NO2 bond. The calculated hydrogen bond properties indicate that the hydrogen bond between water molecules and cations is N7-H3… O5 (1.563 Å), which is the shortest hydrogen bond among all hydrogen bonds. The presence of this exceptionally short hydrogen bond renders the N7-H3 and H6-O5 bonds resistant to disruption at high frequencies, underscoring the pivotal role of hydrogen bonding in stabilizing the structure of energetic materials. Given the absence of experimental and theoretical data on the electronic, mechanical, and vibrational properties of the material thus far, our calculations offer valuable theoretical insights into the ionic salts of high energy and low sensitivity., Computational Methods: All calculations have been carried out based on density functional theory (DFT) and implemented in the CASTEP code. Background: Inadequate management of acute post-haemorrhoidectomy pain is a major concern. Optimal pain management is necessary to reduce acute postoperative pain and improve care quality. Therefore, we investigated the efficacy of postoperative pudendal nerve block (PNB) in reducing acute post-haemorrhoidectomy pain in Asian individuals., Methods: This retrospective cohort study analysed 108 adult patients with grade 3 haemorrhoids. Patients with anorectal cancer were excluded from this study. Among the 108 patients, 79 and 29 received spinal anaesthesia (SA) with PNB (SAPNB) and SA alone, respectively. Propensity score matching and inverse probability of treatment weighting were performed to adjust for the effects of confounders., Results: Patients receiving SAPNB had significantly lower postoperative pain scores 6, 12, and 18 h after haemorrhoidectomy but significantly higher postoperative pain scores 24 and 48 h after haemorrhoidectomy than did patients receiving SA alone. PNB, older age, female sex, reduced operation time, and absence of cardiovascular disease reduced the risk of moderate to severe postoperative pain. Only the addition of PNB was consistently associated with a reduced risk of moderate to severe pain 6, 12, and 18 h after haemorrhoidectomy. Patients receiving SAPNB had significantly lower risks of perianal swelling and urinary retention but a significantly higher risk of nausea than did those receiving SA alone. Rationale: This study reports the first case of congenital hypothyroidism (CH) and alpha thalassemia in a child in China, with anemia and muscle damage as the main manifestations. Analyzing and studying this case is of great significance in reducing missed and misdiagnosed CH and will provide a clinical strategy for treating these patients., Patient Concerns: Child, female, 2 years and 7 months old, the child appeared dispirited, had poor appetite, shallow complexion, reduced activities with anemia, elevated muscle enzymes, height, and growth retardation., Diagnoses: The child was diagnosed with CH with alpha thalassemia., Interventions: The patient was treated with levothyroxine sodium and anemia correction., Outcomes: The children's current spirit, appetite, red face, normal limb activity, physical development, and intelligence were significantly better than those of normal children of the same age., Conclusions: CH with alpha thalassemia, especially anemia and muscle damage as the main manifestations, has not been reported. Administration of levothyroxine sodium is effective in correcting anemia in patients with CH and alpha thalassemia., Lesson: Due to CH and alpha thalassemia, there are no specific symptoms and they are prone to missed diagnosis and misdiagnosis. Horizontal gene transfer has occurred across all domains of life and contributed substantially to the evolution of both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Previous studies suggest that many horizontally transferred eukaryotic genes conferred selective advantages to bacterial recipients, but how these eukaryotic genes evolved into functional bacterial genes remained unclear, particularly how bacteria overcome the expressional barrier posed by eukaryotic introns. Here, we first confirmed that the presence of intron would inactivate the horizontally transferred gene in Escherichia coli even if this gene could be efficiently transcribed. Subsequent large-scale genetic screens for activation of gene function revealed that activation events could rapidly occur within several days of selective cultivation. Molecular analysis of activation events uncovered two distinct mechanisms how bacteria overcome the intron barrier: (i) intron was partially deleted and the resulting stop codon-removed mutation led to one intact foreign protein or (ii) intron was intactly retained but it mediated the translation initiation and the interaction of two split small proteins (derived from coding sequences up- and downstream of intron, respectively) to restore gene function. Context: Energy-containing materials such as explosives have attracted considerable interest recently. In the field of high-energy materials, tetrazine and its derivatives can largely meet the requirements of high nitrogen content and oxygen balance. Nitrogen-rich energetic salts are important research subjects. Nitrogen-rich salt of 3,6-dinitramino-1,2,4,5-tetrazine is a high-energy nitrogen-rich material, but there are few related studies. This paper systematically studies the crystal structure and electronic, vibrational, and thermodynamic properties of (NH 4 ) 2 (DNAT). The lattice parameters of (NH 4 ) 2 (DNAT) are observed to align well with the experimental values. The properties of electrons are analyzed by band structure and density of states (DOS). The phonon dispersion curves indicate that the compound is dynamically stable. The vibrational modes of bonds and chemical groups are described in detail, and the peaks in the Raman and infrared spectra are assigned to different vibration modes. Based on the vibration characteristics, thermodynamic properties such as enthalpy (H), Helmholtz free energy (F), entropy (S), Gibbs free energy (G), constant volume heat capacity (C V ), and Debye temperature (Θ) are analyzed. This article can pave the way for subsequent work or provide data support to other researchers, promoting further research., Methods: In this study, we utilized the density functional theory (DFT) for our calculations. The exchange-correlation potential and van der Waals interactions were characterized based on the GGA-PBE + G function calculation. We obtained Brillouin zone integrals using Monkhorst-Pack k-point grids, with the k-point of the Brillouin zone set to a 2 × 2 × 2 grid. During the self-consistent field operation, we set the total energy convergence tolerance to 5 × 10 -6  eV per atom. The cut-off energy for the calculation was established at 830 eV. Objective: To characterise lifestyle patterns (comprising dietary and movement behaviour aspects) of children in Singapore and examine the correlates of these patterns., Design: An observational study approach was used. Children recorded their diet and activities over two weekdays and two weekend days on a validated web-based assessment, My E-Diary for Activities and Lifestyle (MEDAL). Lifestyle patterns were derived using principal component analysis, and the correlations of these with multiple known determinants organised by distal, intermediate, and proximal levels of influence were studied., Setting: Children of the Growing Up in Singapore Towards healthy Outcomes (GUSTO) cohort., Participants: Ten-year-old children (n = 397)., Results: Three lifestyle patterns, "high snacks and processed food", "balanced" and "mixed", were identified. We focused on the more health-promoting "balanced" pattern, characterised by lower screen-viewing and higher consumption of fruits, vegetables, wholegrains, and dairy. Among the distal factors, girls were more adherent to the "balanced" pattern compared to boys, and children of parents with lower education levels were less adherent to this pattern. Among intermediate factors, children of mothers with higher diet quality were more adherent to the "balanced" pattern. Among the proximal factors, engagement in active transport, leisure sports, and educational activities outside of school were positively associated with the "balanced" pattern, whereas screen-viewing while travelling was negatively associated with this pattern. Having siblings, pet ownership, mother's physical activity, parenting style, parental bonding, child's outdoor time, and breakfast consumption were not associated with children's lifestyle patterns., Conclusions: These findings provide direction for future interventions by identifying vulnerable groups and contexts that should be prioritised., (© 2024. Background and Objectives: This study aimed to examine the associations between breastfeeding duration and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in adolescents and to further investigate the role of birth weight for gestational age (GA) on these associations., Methods: A total of 10 275 participants aged 7 to 18 years were included applying multistage cluster random sampling from a Chinese national survey. Birth weight was classified into small for GA (SGA), appropriate for GA (AGA) and large for GA (LGA). Information was collected through a self-administered questionnaire, physical examination and blood biochemical examination. Multivariable linear regression, logistic regression models, restricted cubic spline models were applied to assess the relationships of breastfeeding duration and MetS with different birth weight for GA., Results: The prevalence of non-breastfeeding, 0-5, 6-12 and >12 months groups were 16.2%, 23.1%, 42.5% and 18.2%, and the prevalence of SGA and LGA was 11.9% and 12.7%, respectively. Prolonged breastfeeding duration was associated with higher odds of MetS (β: 0.08, 95% CI: 0.03, 0.13), WC (β: 3.49, 95% CI: 2.82, 4.16) and SBP (β: 2.34, 95% CI: 1.80, 2.89). SGA and prolonged breastfeeding synergistically increased MetS risks, but LGA appeared to offset the adverse effects of prolonged breastfeeding., Conclusion: Prolonged breastfeeding may increase children's MetS risks. SGA synergies with prolonged breastfeeding increased MetS burden in children and adolescents, while LGA mitigated the risks. Background: Although long-term exposures to air pollutants have been linked to mental disorders, existing studies remain limited and inconsistent. We investigated the relationship between exposure to particulate matter (PM) and depressive symptoms, as well as the potential role of sleep duration and physical activity., Method: Using the surveillance data (2019 to 2022) of common diseases and risk factors among 312,390 students aged 10-25 years, logistic regression, generalized liner model (GLM) and restricted cubic spline (RCS) were employed to investigate the relationship between long-term exposure to PM and depressive symptoms., Result: Significant associations were found between PM 1 (OR = 1.21, 95 % CI: 1.12-1.32), PM 2.5 (OR = 1.24, 95 % CI: 1.19-1.38), and PM 10 (OR = 1.87, 95 % CI: 1.69-2.07) and increased risks of depressive symptoms. Sleep duration and physical activity relieved these associations. The odds ratios (ORs) of PM 1 , PM 2.5 , and PM 10 on depressive symptoms were lower in group with sufficient sleep (1.02 vs. 1.49, 1.20 vs. 1.80, 2.15 vs. 2.23), lower in group with high level MVPA (1.13 vs. 1.48, 1.14 vs. 1.58, 1.85 vs. 2.38), and lower in group with high level outdoor activity (1.19 vs. 1.55, 1.23 vs. 1.63, 1.83 vs. 2.72)., Limitations: Conclusions about causality remain speculative because of the cross-sectional design., Conclusion: Sufficient sleep duration and outdoor activity may mitigate the decline in mental health among adults in developing countries caused by long-term exposure to PM. Soil extractable nitrate, ammonium, and organic nitrogen (N) are essential N sources supporting primary productivity and regulating species composition of terrestrial plants. However, it remains unclear how plants utilize these N sources and how surface-earth environments regulate plant N utilization. Here, we establish a framework to analyze observational data of natural N isotopes in plants and soils globally, we quantify fractional contributions of soil nitrate (f NO3- ), ammonium (f NH4+ ), and organic N (f EON ) to plant-used N in soils. We find that mean annual temperature (MAT), not mean annual precipitation or atmospheric N deposition, regulates global variations of f NO3- , f NH4+ , and f EON . The f NO3- increases with MAT, reaching 46% at 28.5 °C. The f NH4+ also increases with MAT, achieving a maximum of 46% at 14.4 °C, showing a decline as temperatures further increase. Meanwhile, the f EON gradually decreases with MAT, stabilizing at about 20% when the MAT exceeds 15 °C. These results clarify global plant N-use patterns and reveal temperature rather than human N loading as a key regulator, which should be considered in evaluating influences of global changes on terrestrial ecosystems., (© 2024. Objective: To evaluate the postoperative complications and mortality among patients with chronic kidney disease., Methods: Biochemical measurements, diagnosis codes for CKD and comorbid conditions for surgical patients aged ≥20 years were obtained from electronic medical records of three large hospitals in Taiwan in 2009-2017. We conducted this retrospective cohort study by using propensity score-matching methods to balance the baseline characteristics between CKD and non-CKD groups. The multiple logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of risks of primary outcome (included postoperative mortality) and secondary outcome (included postoperative infectious complications and non-infectious complications) associated with CKD., Results: Among 31950 eligible surgical patients, the adjusted OR of in-hospital mortality in patients with CKD was 5.49 (95% CI 3.42-8.81) compared with that in non-CKD controls. The adjusted ORs of postoperative septicemia, pneumonia and cellulitis in patients with CKD were 5.90 (95% CI 2.12-16.5), 5.39 (95% CI 1.37-21.16), and 4.42 (95% CI 1.57-12.4), respectively, when compared with the non-CKD patients. CKD was also associated with postoperative stroke (OR 2.21, 95% CI 1.47-3.31)., Conclusion: Patients with CKD are at increased risk of postoperative stroke, infectious complications, and mortality. Our study implicated that it is crucial to improve the levels of hemoglobin and K+ in patients with CKD before surgery. Precise targeting of specific regions within the central nervous system (CNS) is crucial for both scientific research and gene therapy in the context of brain diseases. Adeno-associated virus 13 (AAV13) is known for its restricted diffusion range within the CNS, making it an ideal choice for precise labeling and administration within small brain regions. However, AAV13 mediates relatively low expression of target genes. Here, we introduced specifically engineered modifications to the AAV13 capsid protein to enhance its transduction efficiency. We first constructed AAV13-YF by mutating tyrosine to phenylalanine on the surface of the AAV13 capsid. We then inserted the 7m8 peptide, known to enhance cell transduction, into positions 587/588 and 585/586 of the AAV13 capsid, resulting in two distinct variants named AAV13-587-7m8 and AAV13-585-7m8, respectively. We found that AAV13-YF exhibited superior in vitro infectivity in HEK293T cells compared to AAV13, while AAV13-587-7m8 and AAV13-585-7m8 showed enhanced CNS infection capabilities in C57BL/6 mice, with AAV13-587-7m8 infection retaining a limited spread range. These modified AAV13 variants hold promising potential for applications in gene therapy and neuroscience research.

Pillar-layered metal-organic frameworks (PLMOFs) are promising gas adsorbents due to their high designability. In this work, high CO 2 storage capacity as well as controllable C 2 H 2 /CO 2 separation ability are acquired by rationally manipulating the interlayer stacking in pillar-layered MOF materials. The rational construction of pillar-layered MOFs started from the 2D Ni-BTC-pyridine layer, an isomorphic structure of pioneering MOF-1 reported in 1995. The replacement of terminal pyridine groups by bridging pyrazine linkers under optimized solvothermal conditions led to three 3D PLMOFs with different stacking types between adjacent Ni-BTC layers, named PLMOF 1 (ABAB stacking), PLMOF 2 (AABB stacking), and PLMOF 3 (AAAA stacking). Regulated by the layer arrangements, CO 2 and C 2 H 2 adsorption capacities (273 K and 1 bar) of PLMOFs 1-3 vary from 173.0/153.3, 185.0/162.4, to 203.5/159.5 cm 3 g -1 , respectively, which surpass the values of most MOF adsorbents. Dynamic breakthrough experiments further indicate that PLMOFs 1-3 have controllable C 2 H 2 /CO 2 separation performance, which can successfully overcome the C 2 H 2 /CO 2 separation challenge. Specially, PLMOFs 1-3 can remove trace CO 2 (3%) from the C 2 H 2 /CO 2 mixture and produce high-purity ethylene (99.9%) in one step with the C 2 H 2 productivities of 1.68, 2.45, and 3.30 mmol g -1 , respectively. GCMC simulations indicate that the superior CO 2 adsorption and unique C 2 H 2 /CO 2 separation performance are mainly ascribed to different degrees of CO 2 agglomeration in the ultramicropores of these PLMOFs.

To investigate the progress of disparities in human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS), gonorrhea, and syphilis among children and adolescents aged 6-22 years in China during 2013-2021. A total of 614 325 cases data were extracted from the Chinese Information System for Infectious Diseases Control and Prevention during 2013-2021. Puberty health education data were drew from the Student Health Surveillance in 2021. Disparity patterns and average annual percentage changes (AAPCs) in sexually transmitted infections (STIs) incidence or new cases in China were examined using descriptive statistics and joinpoint regression. The incidence across 345 cities was stratified by gross domestic product (GDP). Between 2013 and 2021, there were 614 325 reported cases of HIV/AIDS, gonorrhea, and syphilis among children and adolescents aged 6-22, with an annual average incidence of 24.0967 per 100 000. The expansion of HIV/AIDS has halted, yet the surge in gonorrhea and syphilis remains notably pronounced. The ratio of male to female AIDS incidence increased from 2.75 (2.60, 2.90) to 7.13 (6.68, 7.62), but that of syphilis changed from 0.33 (0.32, 0.34) to 0.56 (0.55, 0.57). Students and out-of-school individuals aged 13-15 experienced a notably high increase in STI cases, surpassing other age groups, with an average annual percentage increase of 29.2% and 26.3%, respectively. Nonstudents consistently had a higher incidence rate than students, with an IRR reaching 31.80 (31.24, 32.37) in 2021. A noticeable clustering pattern of new cases emerged in the southeastern region of the Heihe-Tengchong line, extending inland from the coastal areas. Districts and counties with lower rates of puberty sexual health education tended to have higher average STI incidence rates. At the prefecture and city levels, there was a noticeable upward trend on average STI incidence rates in cities with per capita GDPs. Strategies to address those disparities include promoting equitable health education, and widespread sexual health education, particularly in areas with limited access to education and experiencing rapid economic development. Quantum heat engines and refrigerators are open quantum systems, whose dynamics can be well understood using a non-Hermitian formalism. A prominent feature of non-Hermiticity is the existence of exceptional points (EPs), which has no counterpart in closed quantum systems. It has been shown in classical systems that dynamical encirclement in the vicinity of an EP, whether the loop includes the EP or not, could lead to chiral mode conversion. Here, we show that this is valid also for quantum systems when dynamical encircling is performed in the vicinity of their Liouvillian EPs (LEPs), which include the effects of quantum jumps and associated noise-an important quantum feature not present in previous works. We demonstrate, using a Paul-trapped ultracold ion, the first chiral quantum heating and refrigeration by dynamically encircling a closed loop in the vicinity of an LEP. We witness the cycling direction to be associated with the chirality and heat release (absorption) of the quantum heat engine (quantum refrigerator). Our experiments have revealed that not only the adiabaticity breakdown but also the Landau-Zener-Stückelberg process play an essential role during dynamic encircling, resulting in chiral thermodynamic cycles. Our observations contribute to further understanding of chiral and topological features in non-Hermitian systems and pave a way to exploring the relation between chirality and quantum thermodynamics., (© 2024. This study assesses the association of short-term exposure to PM 2.5 (particles ≤2.5 μm) on infectious diseases among Chinese children and adolescents. Analyzing data from 507 cities (2008-2021) on 42 diseases, it focuses on PM 2.5 components (black carbon (BC), ammonium (NH 4 + ), inorganic nitrate (NO 3 - ), organic matter (OM), and sulfate (SO 4 2- )). PM 2.5 constituents significantly associated with incidence. Sulfate showed the most substantial effect, increasing all-cause infectious disease risk by 2.72 % per interquartile range (IQR) increase. It was followed by BC (2.04 % increase), OM (1.70 %), NO 3 - (1.67 %), and NH 4 + (0.79 %). Specifically, sulfate and BC had pronounced impacts on respiratory diseases, with sulfate linked to a 10.73 % increase in seasonal influenza risk and NO 3 - to a 16.39 % rise in tuberculosis. Exposure to PM 2.5 also marginally increased risks for gastrointestinal, enterovirus, and vectorborne diseases like dengue (7.46 % increase with SO 4 2- ). Sexually transmitted and bloodborne diseases saw an approximate 6.26 % increase in incidence, with specific constituents linked to diseases like hepatitis C and syphilis. The study concludes that managing PM 2.5 levels could substantially reduce infectious disease incidence, particularly in China's middle-northern regions. Perinatal exposure to omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) can be characterized through biomarkers in maternal or cord blood or breast milk. Objectives were to describe perinatal PUFA status combining multiple biofluids and to investigate how it was influenced by dietary intake during pregnancy and maternal FADS and ELOVL gene polymorphisms. This study involved 1,901 mother-child pairs from the EDEN cohort, with PUFA levels measured in maternal and cord erythrocytes, and colostrum. Maternal dietary PUFA intake during the last trimester was derived from a food frequency questionnaire. Twelve single-nucleotide polymorphisms in FADS and ELOVL genes were genotyped from maternal DNA. Principal component analysis incorporating PUFA levels from the three biofluids identified patterns of perinatal PUFA status. Spearman's correlations explored associations between patterns and PUFA dietary intake, and linear regression models examined pattern associations with FADS or ELOVL haplotypes. Five patterns were retained: "High omega-3 LC-PUFAs, low omega-6 LC-PUFAs"; "Omega-6 LC-PUFAs"; "Colostrum LC-PUFAs"; "Omega-6 precursor (LA) and DGLA"; "Omega-6 precursor and colostrum ALA". Maternal omega-3 LC-PUFA intakes were correlated with "High omega-3 LC-PUFAs, low omega-6 LC-PUFAs" (r(DHA) = 0.33) and "Omega-6 LC-PUFAs" (r(DHA) = -0.19) patterns. Strong associations were found between FADS haplotypes and PUFA patterns except for "High omega-3 LC-PUFAs, low omega-6 LC-PUFAs". Lack of genetic association with the "High omega-3 LC-PUFAs, low omega-6 LC-PUFAs" pattern, highly correlated with maternal omega-3 LC-PUFA intake, emphasizes the importance of adequate omega-3 LC-PUFA intake during pregnancy and lactation. Objective: Children and adolescents are particularly vulnerable to the effects of various environmental factors, which could disrupt growth processes and potentially lead to obesity. Currently, comprehensive and systematic assessments of these environmental exposures during developmental periods are lacking. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the association between external environmental exposures and the incidence of obesity in children and adolescents., Methods: Data was collected from the 2019 Chinese National Survey on Students' Constitution and Health, including 214,659 Han children aged 7 to 19. Body Mass Index (BMI) and BMI-for-age z-score (zBMI) were the metrics used to assess overweight and obesity prevalence. The study assessed 18 environmental factors, including air pollutants, natural space, land cover, meteorological conditions, built environment, road conditions, and artificial light at night. Exposome-wide association study (ExWAS) to analyze individual exposures' associations with health outcomes, and Weighted Quantile Sum (WQS) to assess cumulative exposure effects., Results: Among the children and adolescents, there were 24.2 % participants classified as overweight or obesity. Notably, 17 out of 18 environmental factors exhibited significant associations with zBMI and overweight/obesity. Seven air pollutants, road conditions, and built density were positively correlated with higher zBMI and obesity risk, while NDVI, forests, and meteorological factors showed negative correlations. Co-exposure analysis highlighted that SO2, ALAN, PM10, and trunk road density significantly increased zBMI, whereas rainfall, grassland, and forest exposure reduced it. Theoretically reduction in the number and prevalence of cases was calculated, indicating potential reductions in prevalence of up to 4.51 % for positive exposures and 5.09 % for negative exposures. Objective: To compare the new zero-profile (Zero-P) fusion cage with regular cage and plate (CP) in the treatment of anterior cervical single-level cervical degenerative diseases., Methods: Patients operated from January 2013 to August 2018 were enrolled. They were divided into the Zero-P group ( n  = 74 cases) and CP groups ( n  = 116 cases). Follow-up assessment was at 1, 3, 12, and 24 months after surgery, including the incidence of dysphagia, visual analogue scale (VAS) score, Japanese orthopaedic association (JOA)score, C2-C7 Cobb angle, intervertebral disc height (IDH) and adjacent joint degeneration., Results: The operation time and blood loss of patients in Zero-P group were less than those in the CP group, and there was no difference in hospitalization time. All 190 patients were followed up for 24 to 72 months, with an average of 35.29 months. In terms of clinical outcomes, vas and JOA scores of the two groups were significantly improved at one month and the last follow-up. The incidence of dysphagia in the Zero-P group was lower than that in the CP group. On radiological effects, Cobb angle and IDH showed significant correction in both groups, but the degeneration rate of adjacent joints in the Zero-P group was lower than the CP group., Conclusions: In ACDF, the clinical and radiological results of Zero-P and CP devices are satisfactory, but Zero-P cage may be superior in operation time, blood loss, the incidence of dysphagia and adjacent joint degeneration.

Objective: To determine the relationship between the uncinate process (UP) and vertebral artery (VA) from a radiologic view and to confirm the surgical safety margin to minimize the risk of VA injury during anterior cervical approaches., Methods: We retrospectively reviewed computed tomography angiography of 205 patients by using a contrast-enhanced computed tomography angiography protocol of the VA. Four kinds of images were simultaneously reconstructed to measure all the parameters associated with VA and UP of cervical spine., Results: The shortest distance from the UP's tip to the VA's medial border (P < 0.001) was at the C-6 level (2.9 ± 0.9 mm on the left and 3.2 ± 1.3 mm on the right), and the longest distance (P < 0.001) was at the C-3 level on both sides. The distance between UP's tip and the medial border of the ipsilateral VA was statistically significantly different at each cervical level, and the right distance was larger than the left (P < 0.05). We found the height of UP gradually increased from C-3 to C5-level and then decreased from C-5 to C-7 level for both sides. The mean distance between the medial borders of left UP and left VA was on average 7.5 ± 1.4 mm. The diameter of VA was on average 3.4 ± 0.6 mm on the left side and 3.2 ± 0.7 mm on the right. The diameter of the VA was statistically significantly different on both sides, and the left side was larger than the right (P < 0.05)., Conclusions: Detailed radiologic anatomy of VA and UP was reviewed in this study. Objective: Focal cervical kyphotic deformity (FCK) without neurologic compression is not uncommon in patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) who underwent anterior cervical decompression and fusion (ACDF) surgery. It remains unclear whether FCK at non-responsible levels needs to be treated simultaneously. This study aims to investigate whether FCK at non-responsible levels is the prognostic factor for CSM and elucidate the surgical indication for FCK., Methods: Patients with CSM who underwent ACDF between January 2016 and April 2021 were included. Patients were divided into two groups according to the presence of FCK and two classifications according to global cervical sagittal alignment. Clinical outcomes were compared using Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) scores and recovery rate (RR) of neurologic function. Univariate and multivariate analysis based on RR assessed the relationship between various possible prognostic factors and clinical outcomes. The receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) was used to determine the optimal cutoff value of the focal Cobb angle to predict poor clinical outcomes., Results: A total of 94 patients were included, 41 with FCK and 53 without. Overall, the RR of neurologic function was significantly lower in the FCK than in the non-FCK group. Further analysis showed that the RR difference between the two groups was only observed in hypo-lordosis classification (kyphotic and sigmoid alignment), but not in the lordosis classification. Multivariate analysis showed that the preoperative focal Cobb angle in the FCK level (OR = 0.42; 95% CI = 0.18-0.97) was independently associated with clinical outcomes in the hypo-lordosis classification. The optimal cutoff point of the preoperative focal kyphotic Cobb angle was calculated at 4.05°., Conclusion: For CSM with hypo-lordosis, FCK was a risk factor for poor postoperative outcomes. Surgeons may consider treating the FCK simultaneously if the focal kyphotic Cobb angle of FCK is greater than 4.05° and is accompanied by cervical global kyphotic or sigmoid deformity., (© 2024 The Authors. In order to investigate the impact of an external electric field on the sensitivity of β-HMX explosives, we employ first-principles calculations to determine the molecular structure, dipole moment, and electronic properties of both β-HMX crystals and individual β-HMX molecules under varying electric fields. When the external electric field is increasing along the [100], [010], and [001] crystallographic directions of β-HMX, the calculation results indicate that an increase in the bond length (N1-N3/N1'-N3') of the triggering bond, an increase in the main Q nitro (N3, N3') value, an increase in the minimum surface electrostatic potential, and a decrease in band gap all contribute to a reduction in its stability. Among these directions, the [010] direction exhibits the highest sensitivity, which can be attributed to the significantly smaller effective mass along the [010] direction compared with the [001] and [100] directions. Moreover, the application of an external electric field along the Y direction of the coordinate system on individual β-HMX molecules reveals that the strong polarization effect induced by the electric field enhances the decomposition of the N1-N3 bonds. In addition, due to the periodic potential energy of β-HXM crystal, the polarization effect of β-HMX crystal caused by an external electric field is much smaller than that of a single β-HXM molecule.

Horizontal gene transfer occurs frequently in bacteria, but the mechanism driving activation and optimization of the expression of horizontally transferred genes (HTGs) in new recipient strains is not clear. Our previous study found that spontaneous tandem DNA duplication resulted in rapid activation of HTGs. Here, we took advantage of this finding to develop a novel technique for tandem gene duplication, named tandem gene duplication selected by activation of horizontally transferred gene in bacteria (TDAH), in which tandem duplication was selected by the activation of horizontally transferred selectable marker gene. TDAH construction does not contain any reported functional elements based on homologous or site-specific recombination and DNA amplification. TDAH only contains an essential selectable marker for copy number selection and 9-bp-microhomology border sequences for precise illegitimate recombination. One transformation and 3 days were enough to produce a high-copy strain, so its procedure is simple and fast. Without subsequent knockout of the endogenous recombination system, TDAH could also generate the relatively stable high-copy tandem duplication for plasmid-carried and genome-integrated DNA. TDAH also showed an excellent capacity for increase gene expression and worked well in different industrial bacteria. We also applied TDAH to select the optimal high copy number of ribA for vitamin B 2 production in E. coli; the yield was improved by 3.5 times and remained stable even after 12 subcultures. TDAH is a useful tool for recombinant protein production and expression optimization of biosynthetic pathways. KEY POINTS: • We develop a novel and efficient technique (TDAH) for tandem gene duplication in bacterium. TDAH is based on the mechanism of HTG rapid activation. TDAH does not contain any reported functional elements based on homologous recombination and DNA amplification. Aim: To explore the effects of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) on retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cell behaviors., Methods: The human adult retinal pigment epithelial cell line-19 (ARPE-19) were treated by HGF or mesenchymal-epithelial transition factor (MET) inhibitor SU11274 in vitro . Cell viability was detected by a Cell Counting Kit-8 assay. Cell proliferation and motility was detected by a bromodeoxyuridine incorporation assay and a wound healing assay, respectively. The expression levels of MET, phosphorylated MET, protein kinase B (AKT), and phosphorylated AKT proteins were determined by Western blot assay. The MET and phosphorylated MET proteins were also determined by immunofluorescence assay., Results: HGF increased ARPE-19 cells' viability, proliferation and migration, and induced an increase of phosphorylated MET and phosphorylated AKT proteins. SU11274 significantly reduced cell viability, proliferation, and migration and decreased the expression of MET and AKT proteins. SU11274 suppressed HGF-induced increase of viability, proliferation, and migration in ARPE-19 cells. Additionally, SU11274 also blocked HGF-induced phosphorylation of MET and AKT proteins., Conclusion: HGF enhances cellular viability, proliferation, and migration in RPE cells through the MET/AKT signaling pathway, whereas this enhancement is suppressed by the MET inhibitor SU11274. Background: The effect of elevated preoperative liver enzyme levels on postoperative outcomes is a topic of concern to clinicians. This study explored the association between elevated preoperative liver enzyme levels and surgical outcomes in patients undergoing orthopedic surgery., Methods: Using the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database, we obtained data on adult patients who received nonemergency orthopedic surgery under general anesthesia between 2011 and 2021., Results: We evaluated the data of 477,524 patients, of whom 6.1% (24 197 patients) had elevated preoperative serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT) levels. An elevated SGOT level was significantly associated with 30-day postoperative mortality (adjusted hazard ratio, 1.62; 95% confidence interval, 1.39 to 1.90). We determined that the mortality rate rose with SGOT levels. The results remained unchanged after propensity score matching., Conclusion: Elevated preoperative SGOT levels constitute an independent risk factor for 30-day postoperative mortality and are proportionately associated with the risk of 30-day postoperative mortality., (© 2024. Background: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a prevalent cardiovascular condition, and numerous studies have linked gut bacterial imbalance to CAD. However, the relationship of gut fungi, another essential component of the intestinal microbiota, with CAD remains poorly understood., Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed fecal samples from 132 participants, split into 31 healthy controls and 101 CAD patients, further categorized into stable CAD (38), unstable angina (41), and acute myocardial infarction (22) groups. We conducted internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) and 16S sequencing to examine gut fungal and bacterial communities., Findings: Based on ITS1 analyses, Ascomycota and Basidiomycota were the dominant fungal phyla in all the groups. The α diversity of gut mycobiome remained unaltered among the control group and CAD subgroups; however, the structure and composition of the mycobiota differed significantly with the progression of CAD. The abundances of 15 taxa gradually changed with the occurrence and progression of the disease and were significantly correlated with major CAD risk factor indicators. The mycobiome changes were closely linked to gut microbiome dysbiosis in patients with CAD. Furthermore, disease classifiers based on gut fungi effectively identified subgroups with different degrees of CAD. Finally, the FUNGuild analysis further categorized these fungi into distinct ecological guilds., Interpretation: In conclusion, the structure and composition of the gut fungal community differed from healthy controls to various subtypes of CAD, revealing key fungi taxa alterations linked to the onset and progression of CAD. Background and Aims: Clinical observation revealed an increase in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) prevalence among adults and adolescents and young adults (AYA). However, its prevalence trend in specific subgroups and its characteristics are unclear., Approach and Results: This cross-sectional study included adults and AYA aged 20-79 and 12-19 years, respectively, from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 1999 to 2018. MASLD was defined as US Fatty Liver Index ≥30 in adults and alanine amino transaminase elevation and obesity in AYA. Joinpoint and logistic regression were used to evaluate the MASLD prevalence trend and its associated characteristics. MASLD was diagnosed in 17 156 892 of 51 109 914 (33.6%) adults and 1 705 586 of 29 278 666 AYA (5.8%). During the study period, MASLD prevalence significantly increased from 30.8% to 37.7% ( P  < 0.01) in adults and in subgroups of female participants, individuals aged 20-45 and 61-79 years, and non-Hispanic white individuals. Conversely, MASLD prevalence did not significantly change in AYA (from 5.1% to 5.2%, P  = 0.139), except in the subgroup of Mexican Americans (from 8.2% to 10.8%, P  = 0.01). Among adults, high MASLD prevalence was associated with male sex, Mexican American ethnicity, age >50 years, being unmarried, poverty income ratio <130, poor or fair health condition, obesity or overweight, and chronic conditions. There is a robust association between friendship quality and victimization in adolescence; yet, it remains unclear whether friendship quality may be linked causally with different forms of victimization in middle adolescence. To fill this gap, this study examines the bidirectional associations of friendship quality and relational/verbal victimization with data collected at two time points, 6 months apart, in a sample of 671 middle Chinese adolescents ( M age  = 15.63, SD age  = 0.73, 49% males). Cross-lagged panel analyses revealed a two-way relationship between friendship quality and victimization, which existed in both verbal and relational victimization. Multi-group panel analyses observed that the cross-lagged associations between friendship quality and relational/verbal victimization were only found for males, but not for females. Background: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a malignant tumor associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. Chemoradiotherapy is the mainstream treatment for locally advanced NPC, and chemotherapeutic drugs are an indispensable part of NPC treatment. However, the toxic side-effects of chemotherapy drugs limit their therapeutic value, and new chemotherapy drugs are urgently needed for NPC. Silvestrol, an emerging natural plant anticancer molecule, has shown promising antitumor activity in breast cancer, melanoma, liver cancer, and other tumor types by promoting apoptosis in cancer cells to a greater extent than in normal cells. However, the effects of silvestrol on NPC and its possible molecular mechanisms have yet to be fully explored., Methods: Cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8), cell scratch, flow cytometry, 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine (EdU), and Western blot (WB) assays were used to evaluate the effects of silvestrol on the cell viability, cell cycle, apoptosis, and migration of NPC cells. RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) was used to study the effect of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) inhibitors on the cell transcriptome, and immunohistochemistry (IHC) to assess protein expression levels in patient specimens., Results: Silvestrol inhibited cell migration and DNA replication of NPC cells, while promoting the expression of cleaved caspase-3, apoptosis, and cell cycle arrest. Furthermore, silvestrol altered the level of ERK phosphorylation. The ERK-targeted inhibitor LY3214996 attenuated silvestrol-mediated inhibition of NPC cell proliferation but not migration. Analysis of RNA-Seq data and WB were used to identify and validate the downstream regulatory targets of silvestrol. Expression of GADD45A, RAP1A, and hexokinase-II (HK2) proteins was inhibited by silvestrol and LY3214996. Finally, IHC revealed that GADD45A, RAP1A, and HK2 protein expression was more abundant in cancer tissues than in non-tumor tissues., Conclusions: Silvestrol inhibits the proliferation of NPC cells by targeting ERK phosphorylation. Background: An accelerated epidemiological transition, spurred by economic development and urbanization, has led to a rapid transformation of the disease spectrum. However, this transition has resulted in a divergent change in the burden of infectious diseases between urban and rural areas. The objective of our study was to evaluate the long-term urban-rural disparities in infectious diseases among children, adolescents, and youths in China, while also examining the specific diseases driving these disparities., Methods and Findings: This observational study examined data on 43 notifiable infectious diseases from 8,442,956 cases from individuals aged 4 to 24 years, with 4,487,043 cases in urban areas and 3,955,913 in rural areas. The data from 2013 to 2021 were obtained from China's Notifiable Infectious Disease Surveillance System. The 43 infectious diseases were categorized into 7 categories: vaccine-preventable, bacterial, gastrointestinal and enterovirus, sexually transmitted and bloodborne, vectorborne, zoonotic, and quarantinable diseases. The calculation of infectious disease incidence was stratified by urban and rural areas. We used the index of incidence rate ratio (IRR), calculated by dividing the urban incidence rate by the rural incidence rate for each disease category, to assess the urban-rural disparity. During the nine-year study period, most notifiable infectious diseases in both urban and rural areas exhibited either a decreased or stable pattern. However, a significant and progressively widening urban-rural disparity in notifiable infectious diseases was observed. Children, adolescents, and youths in urban areas experienced a higher average yearly incidence compared to their rural counterparts, with rates of 439 per 100,000 compared to 211 per 100,000, respectively (IRR: 2.078, 95% CI [2.075, 2.081]; p < 0.001). From 2013 to 2021, this disparity was primarily driven by higher incidences of pertussis (IRR: 1.782, 95% CI [1.705, 1.862]; p < 0.001) and seasonal influenza (IRR: 3.213, 95% CI [3.205, 3.220]; p < 0.001) among vaccine-preventable diseases, tuberculosis (IRR: 1.011, 95% CI [1.006, 1.015]; p < 0.001), and scarlet fever (IRR: 2.942, 95% CI [2.918, 2.966]; p < 0.001) among bacterial diseases, infectious diarrhea (IRR: 1.932, 95% CI [1.924, 1.939]; p < 0.001), and hand, foot, and mouth disease (IRR: 2.501, 95% CI [2.491, 2.510]; p < 0.001) among gastrointestinal and enterovirus diseases, dengue (IRR: 11.952, 95% CI [11.313, 12.628]; p < 0.001) among vectorborne diseases, and 4 sexually transmitted and bloodborne diseases (syphilis: IRR 1.743, 95% CI [1.731, 1.755], p < 0.001; gonorrhea: IRR 2.658, 95% CI [2.635, 2.682], p < 0.001; HIV/AIDS: IRR 2.269, 95% CI [2.239, 2.299], p < 0.001; hepatitis C: IRR 1.540, 95% CI [1.506, 1.575], p < 0.001), but was partially offset by lower incidences of most zoonotic and quarantinable diseases in urban areas (for example, brucellosis among zoonotic: IRR 0.516, 95% CI [0.498, 0.534], p < 0.001; hemorrhagic fever among quarantinable: IRR 0.930, 95% CI [0.881, 0.981], p = 0.008). Additionally, the overall urban-rural disparity was particularly pronounced in the middle (IRR: 1.704, 95% CI [1.699, 1.708]; p < 0.001) and northeastern regions (IRR: 1.713, 95% CI [1.700, 1.726]; p < 0.001) of China. A primary limitation of our study is that the incidence was calculated based on annual average population data without accounting for population mobility., Conclusions: A significant urban-rural disparity in notifiable infectious diseases among children, adolescents, and youths was evident from our study. The burden in urban areas exceeded that in rural areas by more than 2-fold, and this gap appears to be widening, particularly influenced by tuberculosis, scarlet fever, infectious diarrhea, and typhus. Background: The diagnostic potential of circular RNAs (circRNAs) in circulating exosomes for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is not well understood, despite existing research indicating their role in cardiovascular diseases. This study aimed to clarify the significance of exosomal circular RNAs as indicators for AMI., Methods: We examined 120 individuals diagnosed with AMI and 83 individuals with non-cardiogenic chest pain (NCCP), all previously enrolled in a conducted study. High-throughput sequencing to identify differentially expressed circRNAs in the circulating exosomes of AMI patients. To validate, we employed Real-Time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) targeting five circRNAs that exhibited notable increase., Results: The sequencing identified 893 exosomal circRNAs with altered expression in AMI patients, including 118 up-regulated and 775 down-regulated circRNAs. Genes linked to these circRNAs were enriched in crucial Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways, highlighting their direct relevance to AMI pathophysiology. Three exosomal circRNAs (hsa&#95;circ&#95;0001558, hsa&#95;circ&#95;0001535, and hsa&#95;circ&#95;0000972) showed significant up-regulation in AMI patients during the initial validation cohort. The corresponding area under the curve (AUC) values were 0.79, 0.685, and 0.683, respectively. Further validation of hsa&#95;circ&#95;0001558 in a second cohort showed a 4.45-fold increase in AMI patients, with AUC = 0.793. The rise was particularly noticeable in patients with non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) (2.80 times, AUC = 0.72) and patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) (5.27 times, AUC = 0.831) compared to patients with NCCP., Conclusions: Our findings demonstrate significant differences in the expression patterns of circRNAs in plasma exosomes between AMI patients and NCCP patients. Study Design: A retrospective observational study., Objective: To describe a novel outcome indication system, the posterior compression score (PCS), and investigate its clinical value in cervical ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) patients treated with laminoplasty., Methods: A total of 282 OPLL patients who underwent laminoplasty from January 2013 to December 2018 were reviewed. The patients were divided into high-score (HS) or low-score (LS) groups based on whether the PCS was over 8. Propensity score matching analysis with a caliper of .1 was used to attenuate the potential selection bias. Clinical measurements, including the Japanese Orthopedic Association (JOA) score, visual analog scale (VAS), neck disability index (NDI), and radiological measurements, including C2-C7 lordotic angle and range of motion (ROM), were compared between the groups., Results: The mean follow-up period was 29.87 ± 9.17 months. There were no significant differences between the two groups regarding patients' baseline demographical and clinical characteristics after propensity score matching. No significant differences were found in the operative time, blood loss, postoperative VAS score for neck and arm pain, postoperative C2-C7 lordotic angle, or postoperative ROM ( P > .05). However, the postoperative JOA score and recovery rate were significantly higher in the HS group than in the LS group, while the postoperative NDI was significantly lower in the HS group ( P < .05)., Conclusion: OPLL patients with higher PCS scores displayed better clinical outcomes. Neuroinflammation is an early event of brain injury after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Whether the macrophage mediators in resolving inflammation 1 (MaR1) is involved in SAH pathogenesis is unknown. In this study, 205 male Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to SAH via endovascular perforation in the experimental and control groups. MaR1 was dosed intranasally at 1 h after SAH, with LGR6 siRNA and KG-501, GSK-J4 administered to determine the signaling pathway. Neurobehavioral, histological and biochemical data were obtained from the animal groups with designated treatments. The results showed: (i) The leucine-rich repeat containing G protein-coupled receptor 6 (LGR6) was decreased after SAH and reached to the lowest level at 24 h after SAH. Jumonji d3 (JMJD3) protein levels tended to increase and peaked at 24 h after SAH. LGR6 and JMJD3 expression were co-localized with microglia. (ii) MaR1 administration mitigated short-term neurological deficits, brain edema and long-term neurobehavioral performance after SAH, and attenuated microglial activation and neutrophil infiltration. (iii) Knockdown of LGR6, inhibition of CREB phosphorylation or JMJD3 activity abolished the anti-neuroinflammatory effect of MaR1 on the expression of CREB, CBP, JMJD3, IRF4, IRF5, IL-1β, IL-6 and IL-10, thus prevented microglial activation and neutrophil infiltration. Background: Meningioma, the most prevalent intracranial tumor, possesses a significant propensity for malignant transformation. Circular RNAs (circ-RNAs), a class of non-coding RNAs, have emerged as crucial players in tumorigenesis. This study explores the functional relevance of hsa&#95;circ&#95;0004872, a specific circ-RNA, in the context of meningioma., Methods: Molecular structure and stability of hsa&#95;circ&#95;0004872 were elucidated through PCR identification. Meningioma cell proliferation and apoptosis were assessed using the CCK-8 assay and flow cytometry, respectively. Gene and protein expression were analyzed via qRT-PCR and western blot. Molecular interactions were confirmed through dual-luciferase reporter gene and RIP assays., Results: Hsa&#95;circ&#95;0004872, derived from exons 2 to 4 of the host gene MAPK1, demonstrated enhanced stability compared to its host MAPK1. Clinical data described that hsa&#95;circ&#95;0004872 was reduced in meningioma tissues and cell lines, and negatively correlated to poor survival rate of meningioma patients. Overexpression of hsa&#95;circ&#95;0004872 exhibited inhibitory effects on cell proliferation and promotion of apoptosis in vitro. Subsequent investigations unveiled a direct interaction between hsa&#95;circ&#95;0004872 and miR-190a-3p, leading to the activation of the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway through targeting PTEN. Notably, miR-190a-3p silence accelerated the apoptosis and proliferation inhibition of meningioma cells by inactivating PTEN/PI3K/AKT signaling, while miR-190a-3p overexpression showed an opposite effect, which greatly reversed the anti-tumor effects of hsa&#95;circ&#95;0004872 overexpression., Conclusion: In summary, our findings highlighted the intricate role of hsa&#95;circ&#95;0004872 in meningioma, shedding light on the regulatory mechanisms involving circ-RNAs in tumor progression. Background and Aims: Both nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and cholelithiasis are highly prevalent hepatobiliary diseases with risk of progression into severe outcomes. Considering the close relationship between liver and gallbladder in anatomy and physiology, a potential causal relationship between NAFLD and cholelithiasis has been speculated., Methods: Mendelian randomization (MR) was employed using genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics in Million Veteran Program (MVP) for NAFLD, and statistics in UK biobank for cholelithiasis., Results: Our results demonstrate that NAFLD has a causal effect on cholelithiasis risk (OR, 1.003; 95%CI, 1.000-1.006; p  = 0.03). Myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury stands out among cardiovascular diseases, and current treatments are considered unsatisfactory. For cardiomyocytes (CMs) in ischemic tissues, the upregulation of Limb-bud and Heart (LBH) and αB-crystallin (CRYAB) and their subsequent downregulation in the context of cardiac fibrosis have been verified in our previous research. Here, we focused on the effects and mechanisms of activated LBH-CRYAB signaling on damaged CMs during I/R injury, and confirmed the occurrence of mitochondrial apoptosis and ferroptosis during I/R injury. The application of inhibitors, ectopic expression vectors, and knockout mouse models uniformly verified the role of LBH in alleviating both apoptosis and ferroptosis of CMs. p53 was identified as a mutual downstream effector for both LBH-CRYAB-modulated apoptosis and ferroptosis inhibition. Papain-like cysteine proteases (PLCPs) play pivotal roles in plant defense against pathogen invasions. While pathogens can secrete effectors to target and inhibit PLCP activities, the roles of PLCPs in plant-virus interactions and the mechanisms through which viruses neutralize PLCP activities remain largely uncharted. Here, we demonstrate that the expression and activity of a maize PLCP CCP1 (Corn Cysteine Protease), is upregulated following sugarcane mosaic virus (SCMV) infection. Transient silencing of CCP1 led to a reduction in PLCP activities, thereby promoting SCMV infection in maize. Furthermore, the knockdown of CCP1 resulted in diminished salicylic acid (SA) levels and suppressed expression of SA-responsive pathogenesis-related genes. This suggests that CCP1 plays a role in modulating the SA signaling pathway. Interestingly, NIa-Pro, the primary protease of SCMV, was found to interact with CCP1, subsequently inhibiting its protease activity. A specific motif within NIa-Pro termed the inhibitor motif was identified as essential for its interaction with CCP1 and the suppression of its activity. We have also discovered that the key amino acids responsible for the interaction between NIa-Pro and CCP1 are crucial for the virulence of SCMV. In conclusion, our findings offer compelling evidence that SCMV undermines maize defense mechanisms through the interaction of NIa-Pro with CCP1. Hazardous biological pathogens in the air pose a significant public environmental health concern as infected individuals emit virus-laden aerosols (VLAs) during routine respiratory activities. Mask-wearing is a key preventive measure, but conventional filtration methods face challenges, particularly in high humidity conditions, where electrostatic charge decline increases the risk of infection. This study introduces a bio-based air filter comprising glycine ionic liquids (GILs) and malleable polymer composite (GILP) with high polarity and functional group density, which are wrapped around a melamine-formaldehyde (MF) resin skeleton, forming a conductive, porous GIL functionized ionic network air filter (GILP@MF). When subjected to low voltage, the GILP@MF composite efficiently captures VLAs including nanoscale virus particles through the enhanced electrostatic attraction, especially in facing high humidity bioaerosols exhaled by human body. The filtration/collection efficiency and quality factor can reach 98.3% and 0.264 Pa -1 at 0.1 m s -1 , respectively. Study Design: This is a cross-sectional study., Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of a novel finger Kinematic Parameter-Based Tool in the grip and release (G&R) test for assessing degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM)., Summary of Background Data: The development and progression of DCM symptoms are gradual and obscure. Although previous studies have objectively evaluated hand movements specific to myelopathy using the G&R test, virtual reality, or wearable sensors, these methods have limitations, such as limited discrimination or inconvenience for simple screening. Consequently, there is a need to develop effective screening methods., Materials and Methods: Totally, 297 asymptomatic volunteers and 258 DCM patients were enrolled. This system comprises a wearable acceleration/gyro sensor. The acceleration/gyro sensor was placed on the little finger of the participants to perform 40 cycles of full-range G&R as quickly as possible. The collected data were then transformed into kinematic parameters using sensor-based software and R studio software (version: RStudio 2022.07.2+576, Boston, USA). Gender, age, and body mass index (BMI) subgroups (classified as BMI<18.5-below normal weight; 18.5≤BMI<25-normal weight group; BMI≥25-overweight group) were matched as predictor variables, and 201 pairs were matched. Nonparametric analysis using the Mann-Whitney U test was used for diagnosing the differences between the two groups, and Kruskal-Wallis's test followed by the Mann-Whitney U test was used for analyzing the differences among three different age groups (<40, 41-60, and >60 yr group). The cut-off value of 10s G&R cycles and a combined parameter were determined using receiver operating characteristics curve analysis, area under the curve, and Youden index., Results: The authors found that little finger kinematic parameters were significantly lower in DCM patients than in asymptomatic participants. Calcium titanium oxide has emerged as a highly promising material for optoelectronic devices, with recent studies suggesting its potential for favorable thermoelectric properties. However, current experimental observations indicate a low thermoelectric performance, with a significant gap between these observations and theoretical predictions. Therefore, this study employs a combined approach of experiments and simulations to thoroughly investigate the impact of structural and directional differences on the thermoelectric properties of two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) metal halide perovskites. Two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) metal halide perovskites constitute the focus of examination in this study, where an in-depth exploration of their thermoelectric properties is conducted via a comprehensive methodology incorporating simulations and experimental analyses. The non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulation (NEMD) was utilized to calculate the thermal conductivity of the perovskite material. Thermal conductivities along both in-plane and out-plane directions of 2D perovskite were computed. The NEMD simulation results show that the thermal conductivity of the 3D perovskite is approximately 0.443 W/mK, while the thermal conductivities of the parallel and vertical oriented 2D perovskites increase with n and range from 0.158 W/mK to 0.215 W/mK and 0.289 W/mK to 0.309 W/mK, respectively. Hence, the thermal conductivity of the 2D perovskites is noticeably lower than the 3D ones. Furthermore, the parallel oriented 2D perovskites exhibit more effective blocking of heat transfer behavior than the perpendicular oriented ones. The experimental results reveal that the Seebeck coefficient of the 2D perovskites reaches 3.79 × 10 2 µV/K. However, the electrical conductivity of the 2D perovskites is only 4.55 × 10 -5 S/cm, which is one order of magnitude lower than that of the 3D perovskites. Consequently, the calculated thermoelectric figure of merit for the 2D perovskites is approximately 1.41 × 10 -7 , slightly lower than that of the 3D perovskites.

Background/aims: This study evaluates the performance of the Airdoc retinal artificial intelligence system (ARAS) for detecting multiple fundus diseases in real-world scenarios in primary healthcare settings and investigates the fundus disease spectrum based on ARAS., Methods: This real-world, multicentre, cross-sectional study was conducted in Shanghai and Xinjiang, China. Six primary healthcare settings were included in this study. Colour fundus photographs were taken and graded by ARAS and retinal specialists. The performance of ARAS is described by its accuracy, sensitivity, specificity and positive and negative predictive values. The spectrum of fundus diseases in primary healthcare settings has also been investigated., Results: A total of 4795 participants were included. The median age was 57.0 (IQR 39.0-66.0) years, and 3175 (66.2%) participants were female. The accuracy, specificity and negative predictive value of ARAS for detecting normal fundus and 14 retinal abnormalities were high, whereas the sensitivity and positive predictive value varied in detecting different abnormalities. The proportion of retinal drusen, pathological myopia and glaucomatous optic neuropathy was significantly higher in Shanghai than in Xinjiang. Moreover, the percentages of referable diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion and macular oedema in middle-aged and elderly people in Xinjiang were significantly higher than in Shanghai., Conclusion: This study demonstrated the dependability of ARAS for detecting multiple retinal diseases in primary healthcare settings. Implementing the AI-assisted fundus disease screening system in primary healthcare settings might be beneficial in reducing regional disparities in medical resources. Aim: Simulators for aortic dissection diagnosis are limited by complex anatomy influencing the accuracy of point-of-care ultrasound for diagnosing aortic dissection. Therefore, this study aimed to create a healthy ascending aorta and class DeBakey, type II aortic dissection simulator as a potential point-of-care ultrasound training model., Material and Methods: 3D mould simulators were created based on computed tomography images of one healthy and one DeBakey type II aortic dissection patient. In the next step, two polyvinyl alcohol-based and two silicone-based simulators were synthesised., Results: The results of the scanning electron microscope assessment showed an aortic dissection simulator's surface with disorganised surface texture and higher root mean square (RMS or Rq) value than the healthy model of polyvinyl alcohol ( Rq AD = 20.28 > Rq AAo = 10.26) and silicone ( Rq AD = 33.8 > Rq AAo = 23.07). The ultrasound assessment of diameter aortic dissection showed higher than the healthy ascending aorta in polyvinyl alcohol ( d AD = 28.2 mm > d AAo = 20.2 mm) and Si ( d AD = 31.0 mm > d AAo = 22.4 mm), while the wall thickness of aortic dissection showed thinner than the healthy aorta in polyvinyl alcohol, which is comparable with the actual aorta measurement. The intimal flap of aortic dissection was able to replicate and showed a false lumen in the ultrasound images.
