A nanofiber film was prepared by a facile electrospinning technique using polylactide (PLA), butterfly pea flower extract (BPA) and cinnamaldehyde (CIN). The as-prepared film shows the prominent antioxidative, antibacterial, colorimetric and hydrophobic properties so that the beef freshness can be monitored and maintained up to 6 days at 4 °C simultaneously. Besides, the nanofiber structure endows the film with a fast color responsiveness under acidic-alkaline atmospheres with different concentrations. Moreover, this film exhibits higher tensile strength (9.56 Mpa) than that of the pure PLA electrospinning film (4.40 Mpa). Especially the introduction of the BPA effectively boosts the antimicrobial ability of the CIN. The freshness, sub-freshness and spoilage levels of the beef can be easily testified by observing the color difference change of the film. Slow healing of wounds induces great pain in diabetic patients. However, developing new approaches to promote diabetic wound healing is still one of the toughest challenges in the medical field. Here, we constructed a new double-layer hydrogel to effectively regulate reactive oxygen species (ROS) on the wound and promote diabetic wound healing. The inner layer contains glucose oxidase (Gox), ferrocene-modified quaternary ammonium chitosan (Fc-QCs), and poly(β-cyclodextrin) (Pβ-CD), which is used to generate hydroxyl radicals ( • OH) for antibacterial in the early stage of wound healing and collapses gradually. The outer layer is composed of gelatin and dopamine. In the later stage of wound healing, the outer layer contacts the skin, which is beneficial for ROS clearance on the wound. Antibacterial, ROS scavenging, and wound healing experiments have shown that the double-layer hydrogel possesses two-stage ROS regulating properties for programmed diabetic wound healing. In conclusion, it will be one of the most potential dressings for treating diabetic wounds in the future.

Dihydrochalcones are important bioactive ingredients in plants. Anneslea fragrans is an edible and medicinal plant, and its leaves are rich in dihydrochalcones. Confusoside (CF) is the most abundant dihydrochalcone in A. fragrans leaves, which is traditionally used in the treatment of liver diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the hepatoprotective effect of CF on acetaminophen (APAP)-induced hepatic injury in mice. CF could reduce the levels of AST, ALT, and LDH in the serum and enhance the antioxidant activity by activating the Nrf2 signaling pathway to increase the activities of antioxidant enzymes (SOD and CAT), and the GSH content but decrease the MDA accumulation in liver tissues. Immunofluorescence assay and western blotting analysis showed that CF can regulate Nrf2 into the cell nucleus, thereby promoting the expression of downstream antioxidant-related proteins, including NQO1 and HO-1. In addition, CF could inhibit the liver inflammatory response by suppressing the activation of the NF-κB signaling pathway to reduce the expressions of TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and NO. Molecular docking results showed that there was good binding between the CF and Keap1-Nrf2 protein. Western blotting and TUNEL analysis also revealed CF-inhibited cell apoptosis-related protein expression (Bcl2 and caspase-3/9 proteins). Thus, the CF from A. fragrans leaves could be served as an alternative hepaprotective agent for the treatment and prevention of APAP-induced liver injury.

This study was performed to promote the clinical application of Panax notoginseng saponins (PNS), which present anti-inflammatory and antitumor activities, and provided insights for the preparation of controlled-release dosage forms of traditional Chinese medicine. A series of drug-loaded microspheres with degradable amphiphilic polymer material polyethylene glycol monomethyl ether-polylactic acid (mPEG-PLA) as the carrier was synthesized. The degradation, sustained-release behavior, and biocompatibility of the drug-loaded microspheres were studied through in vitro release, degradation, hemolysis, anticoagulation, and cytotoxicity experiments. The pharmacological activities of the microspheres were studied through anti-inflammatory and antitumor experiments. The results showed that the best carrier material was mPEG 2k -PLA (1:9), with an average particle size of 3.47 ± 0.35 μm, a drug load of 5.50 ± 0.28 %, and an encapsulation efficiency of 38.52 ± 1.93 %. This material could be released stably for approximately 24 days and degrade in approximately 60 days. Drug-loaded microspheres are an ideal bone tissue delivery material. In this study, a biodegradable Schiff base chitosan-polylactide was used as the encapsulation material to prepare drug-loaded microspheres as biocompatible carriers for controlled vancomycin release. In this regard, Schiff base chitosan was prepared by the Schiff base method, and then different proportions of the Schiff base chitosan-polylactide polymer were prepared by ring-opening polymerization. Drug-loaded microspheres were prepared by the W/O emulsion method, and the polymers and polymer microspheres were characterized and studied by NMR, IR, and antibacterial methods. The drug loading and release rates of microspheres were determined to investigate the drug loading, encapsulation efficiency, and release rate of drug microspheres at different ratios. In this study, different proportions of Schiff base chitosan-polylactic acid materials are successfully prepared, and vancomycin-loaded microspheres are successfully prepared using them as carriers. This study proves that the materials have antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The particle size of drug-loaded microspheres was below 10 μm, and the particle size decreased with decreasing molecular weight. The obtained results show that 1:100 microspheres have the highest drug-loading and encapsulation efficiencies, the drug-loaded microspheres have no burst release within 24 h, and the release quantity reaches more than 20%. After 30 days of release, the release amounts of 1:10, 1:20, 1:40, 1:60, and 1:100 drug-loaded microspheres were 64.80 ± 0.29%, 54.43 ± 0.54%, 44.60 ± 0.43%, 42.53 ± 0.40% and 69.73 ± 0.45%, respectively, and the release amount of 1:100 was the highest.

Health concerns about food safety have increased in recent years. In order to ensure the safety and increase the shelf-life of food, many methods have been used to slow down the oxidation rate of food fat. In order to solve this problem, a new type of antioxidant-active packaging has emerged. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) films containing phloridzin adsorbed on to an MCM-41 mesoporous molecular sieve were prepared by electrostatic spinning, using PLA as a film-forming substrate, phloridzin as an antioxidant, and MCM-41 as the adsorption and controlled release carrier. The physical properties of the new films-including microscopic structure, water vapor transmission rate, and fresh-keeping effects, as well as the mechanical, thermal, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties-were studied. When the mass ratio of MCM-41 to phloridzin is 1:2, the nanofiber membrane achieves a 53.61% free-radical scavenging rate and better antibacterial performance (85.22%) due to the high content of phloridzin (30.54%). Additionally, when the mass ratio of the molecular sieve to phloridzin is 1:2 and 3:4 (with the best antibacterial performance of 89.30%), the films significantly delay lipid oxidation in the strawberry packaging, allowing the fresh-keeping time to be extended to up to 21 days before mildew appears. In this study, an MCM-41 mesoporous molecular sieve was used to load phloridzin for the first time. The packaging film with phloridzin, MCM-41, and poly(lactic acid) were used as the raw materials and electrospinning technology was used to prepare the packaging film with antioxidant activity. The packaging film was used for the first time in the packaging of strawberries.

Human embryonic kidney cells are the host of adenovirus type-5 (Ad5) amplification. An Ad5-vector-based COVID-19 vaccine has been proven to be tolerated and immunogenic in healthy adults. Therefore, a rationally designed scaffold for culturing human embryonic kidney cells is useful for further studying its mechanism of action. Herein, a three-dimensional layered reticulated polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffold coated with poly(ε-caprolactone)-poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCEC) was developed to proliferate human embryonic kidney cells and to be used to amplify the Ad5 vector. The results indicate that PCEC improves the hydrophilicity and the cell culture ability of PCL cell culture scaffolds, resulting in a three times higher cell proliferation ratio of human embryonic kidney cells compared with those grown on bare PCL cell culture scaffolds. Meanwhile, the cytotoxicity test results showed that the scaffold material is noncytotoxic. This work provides an effective and scalable method for the in-depth study of adenoviruses.

The effect of novel antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) and antimicrobial peptide microspheres (AMS) on the physicochemical and microbial quality of Tricholoma matsutake wild edible mushrooms was investigated. In the experiments, 1.0 g/L, 0.5 g/L of AMS, and 1.0 g/L AMPs were used as preservatives. Mushrooms coated with 1.0 g/L and 0.5 g/L of AMS as a preservative had better physicochemical and sensory qualities than did mushrooms coated with 1.0 g/L of AMPs. In the experiment, 1.0 g/L of blank microspheres without cathelicidin-BF-30 (PLGA-1.0) and distilled water was used as the control. Samples with these two treatments had minimal changes in texture, weight loss, total bacteria count, and sensory attributes. Research results suggests that the use of AMS can maintain the quality of Tricholoma matsutake wild edible mushrooms and could extend the postharvest life to 20 d.

The worsening environment and the demand for safer food have accelerated the development of new food packaging materials. The objective of this research is to prepare antimicrobial food packaging film with controlled release by loading cinnamaldehyde (CIN) on etched halloysite nanotubes (T-HNTs) and adding it to sodium alginate (SA) matrix. The effects of T-HNTs-CIN on the physical functional properties and antibacterial activity of the film were systematically evaluated, and the release of CIN in the film was also quantified. Transmission electron microscopy and nitrogen adsorption experiments showed that the halloysite nanotubes had been etched and CIN was successfully loaded into the T-HNTs. The addition of T-HNTs-CIN significantly improved the water vapor barrier properties and tensile strength of the film. Similarly, the presence of T-HNTs-CIN in the film greatly reduced the negative effects of ultraviolet rays. The release experiment showed that the diffusion time of CIN in SA/T-HNTs-CIN film to fatty food simulation solution was delayed 144 h compared with that of SA/CIN film. Herein, the antibacterial experiment also confirmed the controlled release effect of T-HNTs on CIN. In conclusion, SA/T-HNTs-CIN film might have broad application prospects in fatty food packaging.

A pH indicator film was prepared by mixing natural polymeric chitosan (CH) with natural dye from butterfly pudding extract (BP). The films were determined by color changes at different pH value, absorbance, thickness, moisture content, swelling property, water contact angle, mechanical property, barrier property, and microstructure of films. The structural change of film was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectra. The application to monitor fish freshness was also studied. The prepared film was sensitive to the changes in pH value and showed distinct color changes from pink purple to yellow, with pH value ranging from 1 to 14. The films showed visible color changes from purple-blue to dark green during fish preservation. The total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) content and pH value changes of tilapia were closely related to the visual color changes in film. The efficacy of traditional tablets, drop pills and soft capsules of bergenin is far lower than expected. Therefore, bergenin was modified in this paper to connect with amino polylactic acid, a kind of biodegradable material, for chemical immobilization. The bergenin-amino PLA thus obtained was controllable with small molecular weight and excellent thermal stability. Its release in vitro could be extended with the increase in molecular weight. According to tests of biological compatibility and anti-tumor in vitro, bergenin-amino PLA at a proportion of 1 to 100 was characterized by better biological compatibility and lower cytotoxicity than control group at a concentration of 0.4 μ g/m L. In this study, the poly(lactide-ε-caprolactone) (P(LA-CL)) copolymer is synthesized by ring-opening polymerization with glycol used as a molecular weight regulator to adjust the molecular weight of the polymer. The proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) results demonstrate that the P(LA-CL) copolymer is successfully synthesized, and that the molecular weight can be controlled by the glycol content. The thermoplastic plate is processed with triallyl isocyanurate as a cross-linking agent by a single-screw extruder followed by γ-ray irradiation. Shape memory test results show that the material had the desired shape memory effect, with deformation recovery rates reaching 100%. After secondary stretching of samples, deformation recovery rates are unchanged. The results of mechanical property measurements indicate that with added lactide, the tensile strength is improved and shore hardness is increased by 20%-30%. Data from clinical trials also reveal that the material has good clinical effects in thermoplastic membrane fixation.

Polylactic acid (PLA) is limited in its application due to its high price, high brittleness and low glass-transition temperature. Modification methods are currently used to overcome these shortcomings. In this study, Bletilla striata polysaccharide (BSP) was blended with PLA by a solvent method. DMA data showed that the BSP/PLA film had a higher glass-transition temperature, and the glass-transition temperature of the film showed an extreme value of 68 °C when the proportion of the chalk polysaccharide was 0.8%. TG data indicates that the composite film material has good thermal stability. Tensile tests show that the composite film is improved in rigidity and elasticity compared to the pure PLA film. The blending modification of PLA with white peony polysaccharide not only reduces the cost of PLA, but also improves the thermal and mechanical properties of PLA.

In order to enrich the types of Panax notoginseng saponins (PNS) sustained-release preparations and provide a new research idea for the research and development of traditional Chinese medicine sustained-release formulations, a series of Panax notoginseng saponins microspheres was prepared by a double emulsion method using a series of degradable amphiphilic macromolecule materials polyethylene glycol monomethyl ether-polymandelic acid (mPEG-PMA) as carrier. The structure and molecular weight of the series of mPEG-PMA were determined by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ( 1 HNMR) and gel chromatography (GPC). The results of the appearance, particle size, drug loading and encapsulation efficiency of the drug-loaded microspheres show that the mPEG10000-PMA (1:9) material is more suitable as a carrier for loading the total saponins of Panax notoginseng . The particle size was 2.51 ± 0.21 μm, the drug loading and encapsulation efficiency were 8.54 ± 0.16% and 47.25 ± 1.64%, respectively. The drug-loaded microspheres were used for in vitro release and degradation experiments to investigate the degradation and sustained release behaviour of the drug-loaded microspheres. The biocompatibility of the microspheres was studied by haemolytic, anticoagulant and cytotoxicity experiments. The pharmacological activity of the microspheres was studied by anti-inflammatory and anti-tumour experiments. The results showed that the drug-loaded microspheres could be released stably for about 12 days and degraded within 60 days. At the same time, the microspheres had good biocompatibility, anti-inflammatory and anti-tumour activities.

Total alkaloids of Alstonia scholaris leaves (ASAs) are extracted from the lamp leaves, which have positive anti-inflammatory activity and remarkable effects in treating bronchitis. Due to its short half-life, we used a degradable mPEG-PLA to physically encapsulate the total alkali of the lamp stage, and prepared a sustained-release microsphere by double-emulsion method. The ASAs-loaded mPEG 10000 -PLA microspheres were screened for better performance by testing the morphology, average particle size, embedding rate and drug loading of different molecular weight mPEG-PLA microspheres, which can stably and continuously release for 15 days at 37 °C. The results of cytotoxicity and blood compatibility indicated that the drug-loaded microspheres have beneficial biocompatibility. Animal experiments showed that the drug-loaded microspheres had a beneficial anti-inflammatory effect. These results all indicated that mPEG-PLA is a controlled release carrier material suitable for ASAs.

Antimicrobial peptides have a great potential to replace antibiotics in the treatment of bacterial infections. In order to improve the its stability, the antimicrobial peptides were incorporated in poly(L-lactic acid-co-D,L-mandelic acid) (LA-co-MA) microspheres prepared by a double emulsion solvent evaporation method. In this study, the microspheres obtained had a mean particle size of 2.75±0.2 μ m, Encapsulation Efficiency (EE) of 92.47±1.21% and drug loading of 8.44±0.11%. The peptides were released from poly(LA-co-MA) microspheres at a constant speed and no significant initial burst effect was observed. The secondary structure and antibacterial activity of the released peptide were retained, which were compared with those of the native peptides. In addition, these BF-30-loaded microspheres presented <5% hemolysis and no toxicity for HEK293 cells even at the highest tested concentration (150 μ g/mL), indicating that the poly(LA-co-MA) microspheres are promising carriers for peptides.

The microstructure, thermal properties, mechanical properties and oxygen and water vapor barrier properties of a poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/nano-TiO₂ composite film before and after high pressure treatment were studied. Structural analysis showed that the functional group structure of the high pressure treated composite film did not change. It was found that the high pressure treatment did not form new chemical bonds between the nanoparticles and the PLA. The micro-section of the composite film after high pressure treatment became very rough, and the structure was depressed. Through the analysis of thermal and mechanical properties, high pressure treatment can not only increase the strength and stiffness of the composite film, but also increase the crystallinity of the composite film. Through the analysis of barrier properties, it is found that the barrier properties of composite films after high pressure treatment were been improved by the applied high pressure treatment.

The efficacy of bergenin prepared with osmotic-pump-controlled release is much lower than expected. In this study, biodegradable polylactic acid is used to modify bergenin and immobilize it with chemical methods. Bergenin-PLA obtained by this method has low molecular weight and good thermal stability, as well as prolonged in vitro release time along with increased molecular weight. Biocompatibility tests and in vitro antitumor tests showed that bergenin-PLA at a ratio of 1:30 has good biological properties and low cytotoxicity at t three concentrations, and its antitumor activity was significantly increased compared to bergenin. BF-30 is a single chain polypeptide of an N-segment with an α-helix from cathelicidin gene encoding, and it contains 30 amino acid residues, with a relative molecular mass and isoelectric point of 3637.54 and 11.79, respectively. Cathelicidin-BF-30 was entrapped in four-arm star-shaped poly(ethylene glycol-b-dl-lactic acid-co-glycolic acid) block copolymers (4-arm-PEG-PLGA) by a double-emulsion solvent-evaporation method. Three release phases of cathelicidin-BF-30loaded 4-arm-PEG-PLGA microspheres were observed, including an initial burst-release phase, followed by a lag phase with minimal drug release and finally a secondary zero-order release phase. The delivery system released BF-30 over more than 15 days in vitro. Furthermore, the material for preparing the microspheres has good biocompatibility and biodegradability. Additionally, based on the drug resistance of food pathogenic bacteria, the antibacterial effects of BF-30 on Shigella dysenteriae CMCC 51105 ( Sh. dysenteriae CMCC 51105 ), Salmonella typhi ( S. typhi ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) as well as the stability of the in vitro release of the BF-30-loded microspheres were studied. The α-helix secondary structure and antibacterial activity of released BF-30 were retained and compared with native peptide. These BF-30 loaded microspheres presented <10% hemolysis and no toxicity for HEK293T cells even at the highest tested concentration (150 μg/mL), indicating that they are hemocompatible and a promising delivery and protection system for BF-30 peptide., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Graphene oxide (GO) was employed for the preparation of GO-zinc oxide (ZnO). The hydroxyl group on the surface was exploited to trigger the l-lactide ring-opening polymerization. A composite material with poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) chains grafted to the GO-ZnO surface, GO-ZnO-PLLA, was prepared. The results demonstrated that the employed method allowed one-step, rapid grafting of PLLA to the GO-ZnO surface. The chemical structure of the GO surface was altered by improved dispersion of GO-ZnO in organic solvents, thus enhancing the GO-ZnO dispersion in the PLLA matrix and the interface bonding with PLLA. Subsequently, composite films, GO-ZnO-PLLA and GO-ZnO-PLLA/PLLA, were prepared. The changes in interface properties and mechanical properties were studied. In this paper, the hydroxyl groups on the surface of graphene oxide (GO) were used to initiate the ring-opening polymerization of a lactic acid O -carboxyanhydride. GO grafted with poly (l-lactic acid) molecular chains (GO- g -PLLA) was prepared. Lactic acid O -carboxyanhydride has a higher polymerization activity under mild polymerization conditions. Thus, the functionalization of the polymer chains and obtaining poly (lactic acid) (PLLA) was easily achieved by ring-opening polymerization with 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) as the catalyst. The results showed that with this method, PLLA can be rapidly grafted to the surface of GO in one step. As a result, the chemical structure of the GO surface was altered, improving its dispersion in organic solvents and in a PLLA matrix, as well as its bonding strength with the PLLA interface. We then prepared GO/PLLA and PLLA/GO- g -PLLA composite materials and investigated the differences in their interfacial properties and mechanical properties. GO- g -PLLA exhibited excellent dispersion in the PLLA matrix and formed excellent interfacial bonds with PLLA through mechanical interlocking, demonstrating a significant enhancement effect compared to PLLA. The direct alkylheteroarylation of alkenes with cyclic and acyclic ethers via distal heteroaryl ipso-migration has been accomplished through the design of a photoredox-mediated C-H functionalization pathway. The use of inexpensive ethers as radical precursors combined with a straightforward method makes this a practical approach.

A novel medical adhesive was prepared by blending poly(lactic acid) (PLA) with poly(trimethylene carbonate) (PTMC) in ethyl acetate, and the two materials were proven to be biodegradable and biocompatible. The medical adhesive was characterized by ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance (¹HNMR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of this material was measured to be 7.13 g·cm -2 ·24 h -1 . Its degree of comfortability was confirmed by the extensibility (E) and the permanent set (PS), which were approximately 7.83 N·cm -2 and 18.83%, respectively. In vivo tests regarding rabbit immunoglobulin M (IgM), rabbit immunoglobulin G (IgG), rabbit bone alkaline phosphatase (BALP), rabbit interleukin 6 (IL-6), rabbit interleukin 10 (IL-10), rabbit tumor necrosis factor α(TNFα), glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase (AST/GOT), glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (ALT/GPT), alkaline phosphatase (AKP), blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine (Cr) indicated that the PLA-PTMC medical adhesive was not harmful to the liver and kidneys. Finally, pathological sections indicated that PLA-PTMC was more effective than the control group. Antimicromial and antioxidant bioactive films based on poly(lactic acid)/poly(trimenthylene carbonate) films incorporated with different concentrations of oregano essential oil (OEO) were prepared by solvent casting. The antimicrobial, antioxidant, physical, thermal, microstructural, and mechanical properties of the resulting films were examined. Scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed that the cross-section of films became rougher when OEO was incorporated into PLA/PTMC blends. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis indicated that crystallinity of PLA phase decreased by the addition of OEO, but this did not affect the thermal stability of the films. Water vapor permeability of films slightly increased with increasing concentration of OEO. However, active PLA/PTMC/OEO composite films showed adequate barrier properties for food packaging application. The antimicrobial and antioxidant capacities were significantly improved with the incorporation of OEO (p < 0.05). The results demonstrated that an optimal balance between the mechanical, barrier, thermal, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties of the films was achieved by the incorporation of 9 wt % OEO into PLA/PTMC blends.

The Pheretima complex within the Megascolecidae family is a major earthworm group. Recently, the systematic status of the Pheretima complex based on morphology was challenged by molecular studies. In this study, we carry out the first comparative mitogenomic study in oligochaetes. The mitogenomes of 15 earthworm species were sequenced and compared with other 9 available earthworm mitogenomes, with the main aim to explore their phylogenetic relationships and test different analytical approaches on phylogeny reconstruction. The general earthworm mitogenomic features revealed to be conservative: all genes encoded on the same strand, all the protein coding loci shared the same initiation codon (ATG), and tRNA genes showed conserved structures. The Drawida japonica mitogenome displayed the highest A + T content, reversed AT/GC-skews and the highest genetic diversity. Genetic distances among protein coding genes displayed their maximum and minimum interspecific values in the ATP8 and CO1 genes, respectively. The 22 tRNAs showed variable substitution patterns between the considered earthworm mitogenomes. The inclusion of rRNAs positively increased phylogenetic support. Furthermore, we tested different trimming tools for alignment improvement. Our analyses rejected reciprocal monophyly among Amynthas and Metaphire and indicated that the two genera should be systematically classified into one.

Spiders have evolved highly selective toxins for insects. There are many insecticidal neurotoxins in spider venoms. Although a large amount of work has been done to focus on neurotoxicity of spider components, little information, which is related with effects of spider toxins on tumor cell proliferation and cytotoxicity, is available for Brachypelma albopilosum venom. In this work, a novel spider neurotoxin (brachyin) was identified and characterized from venoms of the spider, Brachypelma albopilosum. Brachyin is composed of 41 amino acid residues with the sequence of CLGENVPCDKDRPNCCSRYECLEPTGYGWWYASYYCYKKRS. There are six cysteines in this sequence, which form three disulfided bridges. The serine residue at the C-terminus is amidated. Brachyin showed strong lethal effects on American cockroaches (Periplaneta americana) and Tenebrio molitor (common mealbeetle). This neurotoxin also showed significant analgesic effects in mice models including abdominal writhing induced by acetic acid and formalin-induced paw licking tests. It was interesting that brachyin exerted marked inhibition on tumor cell proliferation.

A blend of poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) with star-shaped poly(ɛ-caprolactone-co-L-lactide) (s-PCLA) at different contents (PLLA/s-PCLA=100/0, 90/10, 80/20, and 70/30, w/w) were prepared by torque rheometer. Thermal and functional properties of the blends were investigated by FTIR, SEM, DSC, TGA, DMA, tensile, optical, and water vapor permeability tests. FTIR results showed that intermolecular hydrogen bonds existed between two components in the blends. SEM indicated that PLLA and s-PCLA showed limited miscibility. DSC showed that Tg occurred at lower temperatures in the PLLA/s-PCLA blends than in neat PLLA, and the crystallinity of PLLA phase increased by the presence of s-PCLA in the PLLA/s-PCLA blends. TGA indicated that s-PCLA improved the thermal stability of the PLLA/s-PCLA blends. DMA results revealed that the storage modulus of the composites decreased with respect to the pure polymer. The result of tensile tests suggested that the PLLA/s-PCLA blends showed better elongation at break than neat PLLA. The effect of s-PCLA on the color and opacity of films could be considered as negligible. Cathelicidin-BF-30 (BF-30), a water-soluble peptide isolated from the snake venom of Bungarus fasciatus containing 30 amino acid residues, was incorporated in poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) 75∶25 microspheres (MS) prepared by a water in oil in water W/O/W emulsification solvent extraction method. The aim of this work was to investigate the stability of BF-30 after encapsulation. D-trehalose was used as an excipient to stabilize the peptide. The MS obtained were mostly under 2 µm in size and the encapsulation efficiency was 88.50±1.29%. The secondary structure of the peptide released in vitro was determined to be nearly the same as the native peptide using Circular Dichroism (CD). The ability of BF-30 to inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli was also maintained. The cellular relative growth and hemolysis rates were 92.16±3.55% and 3.52±0.45% respectively.

Films of poly(l-lactide) (PLA) plasticized with varying levels of N-octyl lactate (NOL) were prepared by extrusion. The thermal and functional properties of the blends were investigated by SEM, DSC, TGA, tensile, opacity, water vapor permeability, and water contact angle tests. The compatibility of the plasticizer with PLA was confirmed by DSC and SEM analysis. A higher plasticizing effect on the thermal properties of PLA was generally observed with the increase in NOL content. Additionally, the mechanical properties were improved with the increase in NOL content. The mechanical resistance of the films could be related to their glass transition temperature. The effect of the concentration of plasticizer on the opacity of the films was negligible. The water vapor permeability of the PLA/NOL composite films increased with the increase in the concentration of NOL; however, the values observed were still lower than the water vapor permeability of commercial LDPE films. In this work, poly(lactide-co-trimethylene carbonate) and polylactide/ polytrimethylene carbonate films are prepared using a film blowing method. The process parameters, including temperature and screw speed, are studied, and the structures and properties of the P(LA-TMC) and PLA/PTMC films are investigated. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) images show that upon improving the content of TMC and PTMC, the lamellar structures of the films are obviously changed. With increasing TMC monomer or PTMC contents, the elongation at the break is improved, and the maximum is up to 525%. The water vapor permeability (WVP) results demonstrate that the WVP of the PLA/PTMC film increased with the increase in the PTMC content, whereas the WVP of the P(LA-TMC) film decreased. Thermogravimetric (TG) measurements reveal that the decomposition temperatures of the P(LA-TMC) and PLA/PTMC films decrease with increases in the TMC and PTMC contents, respectively, but the processing temperature is significantly lower than the initial decomposition temperature. P(LA-TMC) or PLA/PTMC film can extend the shelf life of apples, for instance, like commercial LDPE film used in fruit packaging in supermarkets.

In this study, hydroxyapatite (HAP) was surface-modified by the addition of β-alanine (β-Ala), and the ring-opening polymerization of γ-benzyl-L-glutamate-N-carboxy-anhydride (BLG-NCA) was subsequently initiated. HAP containing surface poly-γ-benzyl-L-glutamates (PBLG) was successfully prepared in this way. With the increase of PBLG content in HAP-PBLG, the solubility of HAP-PBLG increased gradually and it was ultimately soluble in chloroform. HAP-PLGA with surface carboxyl groups was obtained by the catalytic hydrogenation of HAP-PBLG. In the process of HAP modification, the morphology changes from rod to sheet and from flake to needle. The effect of BLG-NCA concentration on the character of hydroxyapatite-β-alanine-poly(γ-benzyl-L-glutamate) (HAP-PBLG) was investigated. The existence of amino acids on the HAP surfaces was confirmed in the resulting Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra. The resulting powder X-ray diffraction patterns indicated that the crystallinity of HAP decreased when the ratio of BLG-NCA/HAP-NH2 increased to 20/1. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) indicated that the particle size of HAP-PBLG decreased significantly and that the resulting particles appeared less agglomerated relative to that of the HAP-NH₂ crystals. Furthermore, ¹H-NMR spectra and FTIR spectra revealed that hydroxyapatite-β-alanine-poly (L-glutamic acid) (HAP-PLGA) was able to successfully bear carboxylic acid groups on its side chains.

Poly(L-lactide)-co-poly(trimethylene carbonate) (PLLA-PTMC) composites with various talc content as food packaging materials were prepared by solvent casting method. The effect of talc filler loading (0, 1, 2, and 3 wt%) on phase morphology of PLLA-PTMC/Talc composites and improvement in resulting properties were reported. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) curves indicated that the crystallinity of PLLA-PTMC/Talc composites increased. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) suggested that there were strong interactions between PLLA-PTMC copolymer and talc filler. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image of composite films revealed certain homogeneity between PLLA-PTMC and Talc, when the talc filler did not exceed 3 wt%. The elongation at break of composite films significantly (p<0.05) improved with the addition of talc filler. Furthermore, there were 23%, 31%, and 14% improvement in water vapor barrier properties at 1, 2, and 3 wt% of talc in PLLA-PTMC/Talc composites, respectively. The ring-opening polymerization of L-lactic acid O-carboxyanhydrides was initiated by triisopropoxyneodymium in toluene-THF mixtures. Typically, high yields and relatively high molecular weight PLAs were obtained within 4 h at 25 °C. The reaction was highly controllable and easy to conduct, and the molecular weight distribution of the PLAs was rather narrow (Mw/Mn = 1.10-1.36). NMR analysis showed that one end of the PLA chain consisted of an isopropoxy group, while the other end of the chain contained a hydroxyl group. Due to their availability and high polymerizability, Lac-OCAs are promising monomers for the preparation of tailored architectures derived from well-defined PLAs.

Periodontitis is caused by periodontopathic bacteria and antibacterial agents are placed in a periodontal pocket with the intention of enhancing the local effect. To maximize the therapeutic effects while reducing the adverse effects, tinidazole was delivered by in situ forming system. One approach for reducing burst release rate was to testify in situ forming effect. The effect of 0%-10% (w/w) polyethylene glycol 400 and 3% (w/w) glycerol on the tinidazole release from a poly(DL-lactide) (PLA) injectable implant was evaluated. The results showed that the in vitro initial burst release rate was decreased in the presence of poly(ethyleneglycol) PEG 400 and glycerol. A formulation containing 30% (w/w) PLA (M(w) 7300) dissolved in 62% (w/w) N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, 5% (w/w) PEG 400, and 3%(w/w) glycerol with 5% (w/w) tinidazole was shown to be optimum. Twelve adult beagle dogs were used in the periodontitis model. The treatment group I, II, and positive control group was administrated with gel containing 5%(w/w) tinidazole, 2.5%(w/w) tinidazole, and periocline, respectively. Dog studies revealed that periocline and the developed formulation could significantly decrease symptoms of periodontitis, and they were better than gel containing 2.5% (w/w) tinidazole. The developed formulation could sustain the release of tinidazole for local delivery over 7 days. The objective of this study was to prepare a biodegradable poly (DL-lactide) injectable gel of tinidazole. The formulation parameters evaluated in this study included polymer molecular weight, polymer concentration, solvent and drug loading, and orthogonal design was used to optimize the formulation. The preferable formulation was that 30% (w/w) poly(DL-lactide) (MW is 5 700) dissolved in 70% (w/w) N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone with 4%-6% (w/w) tinidazole.

The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of a novel biodegradable membrane on the prevention of postoperative adhesion formation. The membrane was prepared by blending 50% PLA (polylactic acid) with 50% PTMC (polytrimethylene carbonate). The prepared blends polymer membrane was more flexible than pure PLA membrane, as measured by glass-transition temperature and tensile study. Cytotoxicity study revealed that PLA/PTMC blends membrane showed good biocompatibility. The membrane elicited slight tissue reaction based on the results of histological study. Thirty adult Japanese rabbits were used for the intestine adhesion model. The treatment group had PLA/PTMC membrane, the control group had chitosan, and the blank control group was not operated. The animals were housed for two weeks and sacrificed to investigate adhesion of intestine. Compared with the blank control group, the treatment group and the control group lowered the extent of adhesions (p < 0.01), but the treatment group was better than the control group (p < 0.05). Polylactide is a biodegradable and biocompatible biomaterial. Based on the PLA (Polylactide) membrane, we have produced a new PLA/PTMC (Polytrimethylene carbonate) blends membrane. The biological properties of this membrane were studied by cell toxicity experiment, acute toxicity experiment, skin irritant experiment, sensitization test, hemolytic test, micronucleus test and subcutaneous implantation test. The results demonstrated that the blends membrane has no toxicity and it does not cause skin irritation, hypersensitive reaction and hemolysis. The micronucleus ratio of the membrane is 1.3% +/- 1.0%, being less than 3%. The result of medullary micronucleus test was reported negative. The wounds were free from suppuration and necrosis after subcutaneous implantation in all periods. In the experimental application of this member to preventing adhesion after rabbit intestine operation, the membrane demonstrated good effect. In conclusion, PLA/PTMC blends membrane is a material with good biocompatibility.
