In this study, a novel electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor was developed to detect microRNA-21 (miRNA-21) with high sensitivity by leveraging the combined mechanisms of resonance energy transfer (RET) and surface plasmon coupling (SPC). Initially, the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) were coated with Cu-Zn-In-S quantum dots (CZIS QDs), known for their defect-related emission suitable for ECL sensing. Subsequently, a hairpin DNA H3 with gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) attached at the end was modified over the surface of the quantum dots. The Au NPs could effectively quench the ECL signals of CZIS QDs via RET. Further, a significant amount of report DNA was generated through the action of a 3D DNA walker. When the report DNA opened H3-Au NPs, the hairpin structure experienced a conformational change to a linear shape, increasing the gap between the CZIS QDs and the Au NPs. Consequently, the localized surface plasmon resonance ECL (LSPR-ECL) effect replaced ECL resonance energy transfer (ECL-RET). Moreover, the report DNA was released following the addition of H4-Au NPs, resulting in the formation of Au dimers and a surface plasma-coupled ECL (SPC-ECL) effect that enhanced the ECL intensity to 6.97-fold. Recent studies revealed the un-negligible impact of airborne organophosphate esters (OPEs) on phosphorus (P)-limited ecosystems. Subtropical forests, the global prevalence P-limited ecosystems, contain canopy structures that can effectively sequester OPEs from the atmosphere. However, little is known about the behavior and fate of OPEs in subtropical forest ecosystem, and the impact on the P cycling in this ecosystem. OPE concentrations in the understory air (at two heights), foliage, and litterfall were investigated in a subtropical forest in southern China. The median ∑OPE concentrations were 3149 and 2489 pg/m 3 in the upper and bottom air, respectively. Foliage exhibited higher ∑OPE concentrations (median = 386 ng/g dry weight (dw)) compared to litter (median = 267 ng/g dw). The air OPE concentrations were ordered by broadleaved forest > mixed forest > coniferous forest, which corresponds to the results of canopy coverage or leaf area index. The spatial variation of OPEs in foliage and litter was likely caused by the leaf surface functional traits. Higher OPE concentrations were found in the wet season for understory air while in the dry season for foliage and litter, which were attributed to the changes in emission sources and meteorological conditions, respectively. The inverse temporal variation suggests the un-equilibrium partitioning of OPEs between leaf and air. The OPE concentrations during the litter-incubation presented similar temporal trends with those in foliage and litter, indicating the strong interaction of OPEs between the litter layer and the near-soil air, and the efficient buffer of litter layer played in the OPEs partitioning between soil and air. The median OPEs-associated P deposition fluxes through litterfall were 270, 186, and 249 μg P/m 2 ·yr in the broadleaved, mixed, and coniferous forests, respectively. Tartary buckwheat (Fagopyrum tataricum) is an annual coarse cereal from the Polygonaceae family, known for its high content of flavonoid compounds, particularly rutin. But so far, the mechanisms of the flavonoid transport and storage in Tartary buckwheat (TB) remain largely unexplored. This study focuses on ATP-binding cassette transporters subfamily C (ABCC) members, which are crucial for the biosynthesis and transport of flavonoids in plants. The evolutionary and expression pattern analyses of the ABCC genes in TB identified an ABCC protein gene, FtABCC2, that is highly correlated with rutin synthesis. Subcellular localization analysis revealed that FtABCC2 protein is specifically localized to the vacuole membrane. Heterologous expression of FtABCC2 in Saccharomyces cerevisiae confirmed that its transport ability of flavonoid glycosides such as rutin and isoquercetin, but not the aglycones such as quercetin and dihydroquercetin. Overexpression of FtABCC2 in TB hairy root lines resulted in a significant increase in total flavonoid and rutin content (P < 0.01). Analysis of the FtABCC2 promoter revealed potential cis-acting elements responsive to hormones, cold stress, mechanical injury and light stress. Overall, this study demonstrates that FtABCC2 can efficiently facilitate the transport of rutin into vacuoles, thereby enhancing flavonoids accumulation. Smoking disrupts bone homeostasis and serves as an independent risk factor for the development and progression of osteoporosis. Tobacco toxins inhibit the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs), promote BMSCs aging and exhaustion, but the specific mechanisms are not yet fully understood. Herein, we successfully established a smoking-related osteoporosis (SROP) model in rats and mice through intraperitoneal injection of cigarette smoke extract (CSE), which significantly reduced bone density and induced aging and inhibited osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs both in vivo and in vitro. Bioinformatics analysis and in vitro experiments confirmed that CSE disrupts mitochondrial homeostasis through oxidative stress and inhibition of mitophagy. Furthermore, we discovered that CSE induced BMSCs aging by upregulating phosphorylated AKT, which in turn inhibited the expression of FOXO3a and the Pink1/Parkin pathway, leading to the suppression of mitophagy and the accumulation of damaged mitochondria. MitoQ, a mitochondrial-targeted antioxidant and mitophagy agonist, was effective in reducing CSE-induced mitochondrial oxidative stress, promoting mitophagy, significantly downregulating the expression of aging markers in BMSCs, restoring osteogenic differentiation, and alleviating bone loss and autophagy levels in CSE-exposed mice. Gene therapy is the most effective treatment option for diseases, but its effectiveness is affected by the choice and design of gene carriers. The genes themselves have to pass through multiple barriers in order to enter the cell and therefore require additional vectors to carry them inside the cell. In gene therapy, peptides have unique properties and potential as gene carriers, which can effectively deliver genes into specific cells or tissues, protect genes from degradation, improve gene transfection efficiency, and enhance gene targeting and biological responsiveness. This paper reviews the research progress of peptides and their derivatives in the field of gene delivery recently, describes the obstacles encountered by foreign materials to enter the interior of the cell, and introduces the following classes of functional peptides that can carry materials into the interior of the cell, and assist in transmembrane translocation of carriers, thus breaking through endosomal traps to enable successful entry of genetic materials into the nucleus of the cell. Chemokines are cytokines with chemoattractant capacities that exert their physiological functions through the binding of chemokine receptors. Thus, chemokine and receptor complexes exert important roles in regulating development and homeostasis during routine immune surveillance and inflammation. Compared to mammals, the physiology and structure of chemokine receptors in fish have not been systematically studied. Furthermore, the salmonid-specific whole genome duplication has significantly increased the number of functional paralogs of chemokine receptors. In this context, in the current study, trout exhibited 17 cxcr genes, including 12 newly identified and 5 previously identified receptors. Interestingly, gene expression of brain cxcr1 and cxcr4 , kidney cxcr3 and cxcr4 , and spleen cxcr3 , cxcr4 , and cxcr5 subtypes were altered by bacterial infection, whereas brain cxcr1 , kidney cxcr1 and cxcr7 , and liver cxcr2 , cxcr3 , and cxcr4 subtypes were changed in response to environmental changes. Based on protein structures predicted by ColabFold, the conserved amino acids in binding pockets between trout CXCR4.1 subtypes and human CXCR4 were also analyzed. Our study is valuable from a comparative point of view, providing new insights into the identification and physiology of salmonid chemokine receptors.

Liver injury is a core pathological process in the majority of liver diseases, yet the genetic factors predisposing individuals to its initiation and progression remain poorly understood. Here we show that asialoglycoprotein receptor 1 (ASGR1), a lectin specifically expressed in the liver, is downregulated in patients with liver fibrosis or cirrhosis and male mice with liver injury. ASGR1 deficiency exacerbates while its overexpression mitigates acetaminophen-induced acute and CCl4-induced chronic liver injuries in male mice. Mechanistically, ASGR1 binds to an endoplasmic reticulum stress mediator GP73 and facilitates its lysosomal degradation. ASGR1 depletion increases circulating GP73 levels and promotes the interaction between GP73 and BIP to activate endoplasmic reticulum stress, leading to liver injury. Neutralization of GP73 not only attenuates ASGR1 deficiency-induced liver injuries but also improves survival in mice received a lethal dose of acetaminophen. Collectively, these findings identify ASGR1 as a potential genetic determinant of susceptibility to liver injury and propose it as a therapeutic target for the treatment of liver injury., (© 2024. Filtered back projection (FBP) is a classic analytical algorithm for computed tomography (CT) reconstruction, with high computational efficiency. However, images reconstructed by FBP often suffer from excessive noise and artifacts. The original FBP algorithm uses a window function to smooth signals and a linear interpolation to estimate projection values at un-sampled locations. In this study, we propose a novel framework named DeepFBP in which an optimized filter and an optimized nonlinear interpolation operator are learned with neural networks. Specifically, the learned filter can be considered as the product of an optimized window function and the ramp filter, and the learned interpolation can be considered as an optimized way to utilize projection information of nearby locations through nonlinear combination. The proposed method remains the high computational efficiency of the original FBP and achieves much better reconstruction quality at different noise levels. It also outperforms the TV-based statistical iterative algorithm, with computational time being reduced in an order of two, and state-of-the-art post-processing deep learning methods that have deeper and more complicated network structures.

Advanced and metastatic THCA patients usually have a poor prognosis. Thus, this study aimed to establish a risk model to discriminate the high risk population. The expression and clinical data were obtained from TCGA database. The cluster analysis, lasso, univariate and multivariate cox analyses were used to construct risk model. K-M, ROC and DCA were applied to validate the efficiency and stability of the model. GO, KEGG, and ssGSEA analysis were performed to identify the potential mechanism of signatures. The 7-gene prognosis model was constructed, including FAM27E3, FIGN, GSTM4, BEX5, RBPMS2, PHF13, and DCSTAMP. ROC and DCA results showed our model had a better prognosis prediction performance than other risk models. The high risk score was associated with the poor prognosis of THCA patients with different clinical characteristics. The risk score was closely related to cell cycle. Further, we found that the expressions of signatures were significantly dysregulated in THCA and associated with prognosis. These gene expressions were affected by some clinical characteristics, methylation and CNV. Some signatures played a role in drug sensitivity and pathway activation. Clinical epidemiological studies have confirmed that tobacco smoking disrupts bone homeostasis and is an independent risk factor for the development of osteoporosis. The low viability and inferior osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) are important etiologies of osteoporosis. However, few basic studies have elucidated the specific mechanisms that tobacco toxins devastated BMSCs and consequently induced or exacerbated osteoporosis. Herein, our clinical data showed the bone mineral density (BMD) values of femoral neck in smokers were significantly lower than non-smokers, meanwhile cigarette smoke extract (CSE) exposure led to a significant decrease of BMD in rats and dysfunction of rat BMSCs (rBMSCs). Transcriptomic analysis and phenotype experiments suggested that the ferroptosis pathway was significantly activated in CSE-treated rBMSCs. Accumulated intracellular reactive oxygen species activated AMPK signaling, furtherly promoted NCOA4-mediated ferritin-selective autophagic processes, increased labial iron pool and lipid peroxidation deposition, and ultimately led to ferroptosis in rBMSCs. Importantly, in vivo utilization of ferroptosis and ferritinophagy inhibitors significantly alleviated BMD loss in CSE-exposed rats. Background and Objectives: Cigarette smoking has been reported as an independent risk factor for periodontitis. Tobacco toxins affect periodontal tissue not only locally but also systemically, leading to the deterioration and recurrence of periodontitis. However, the mechanism of cigarette smoke-related periodontitis (CSRP) is unclear and thus lacks targeted treatment strategies. Quercetin, a plant-derived polyphenolic flavonoid, has been reported to have therapeutic effects on periodontitis due to its documented antioxidant activity. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of quercetin on CSRP and elucidated the underlying mechanism., Methods: The cigarette smoke-related ligature-induced periodontitis mouse model was established by intraperitoneal injection of cigarette smoke extract (CSE) and silk ligation of bilateral maxillary second molars. Quercetin was adopted by gavage as a therapeutic strategy. Micro-computed tomography was used to evaluate the alveolar bone resorption. Immunohistochemistry detected the oxidative stress and autophagy markers in vivo. Cell viability was determined by Cell Counting Kit-8, and oxidative stress levels were tested by 2,7-dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate probe and lipid peroxidation malondialdehyde assay kit. Alkaline phosphatase and alizarin red staining were used to determine osteogenic differentiation. Network pharmacology analysis, molecular docking, and western blot were utilized to elucidate the underlying molecular mechanism., Results: Alveolar bone resorption was exacerbated and oxidative stress products were accumulated during CSE exposure in vivo. Oxidative stress damage induced by CSE caused inhibition of osteogenic differentiation in vitro. Quercetin effectively protected the osteogenic differentiation of human periodontal ligament cells (hPDLCs) and periodontal tissue by upregulating the expression of Beclin-1 thus to promote autophagy and reduce oxidative stress damage., Conclusion: Our results established a role of oxidative stress damage and autophagy dysfunction in the mechanism of CSE-induced destruction of periodontal tissue and hPDLCs, and provided a potential application value of quercetin to ameliorate CSRP., (© 2023 John Wiley & Sons A/S. Serotonergic system is involved in the regulation of physiological functions and behavioral traits including cognition, memory, aggression, stress coping, appetite and immunomodulation. Serotonin exerts its functions via binding distinct serotonin receptors which are classified into 7 groups. Salmonid exhibits expanded functional gene copies due to salmonid-specific whole genome duplication. However, serotonin receptor (htr) repertoire is not fully identified in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). In this study, we identified 39 htr genes, including 14 htr1, 4 htr2, 4 htr2 like, 3 htr3, 4 htr4, 2 htr5, 2 htr6, and 6 htr7 subtypes. We investigated physiological functions of serotonin receptors in response to bacterial pathogens exposure and salinity changes. We showed htr1, htr2, htr4 and htr7 subtypes were associated with immunomodulation in response to Vibrio anguillarum or Aeromonas salmonicida infection. Saltwater (salinity of 15) transfer significantly altered htr1, htr2, htr4, and htr7 subtypes, suggesting trout Htr was associated with osmoregulation. We further showed residues interacted with inverse agonist (methiothepin) and serotonin analogue (5-Carboxamidotryptamine) were conserved between trout and human, suggesting exogenous ligands targeting human HTRs might have a role in aquaculture. Forest canopies play a vital role in scavenging airborne semi-volatile organic compounds. The present study measured polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the understory air (at two heights), foliage, and litterfall in a subtropical rainforest (the Dinghushan mountain) in southern China. ∑ 17 PAH concentrations in the air ranged from 2.75 to 44.0 ng/m 3 (mean = 8.91 ng/m 3 ), showing a spatial variation depending on the forest canopy coverage. Vertical distributions of the understory air concentrations also indicated PAH inputs from the above-canopy air. The concentrations of PAHs in fresh litter (with a mean of 261 ± 163 ng/g dry weight (dw)) were slightly lower than those in the foliage (362 ± 291 ng/g dw). Unlike the stable air PAH concentrations for most of the time of the year, the temporal variations of foliage and litter concentrations were remarkable but generally similar. Higher or comparable leaf/litter-air partition coefficients (K LA ) in fresh litter compared with living K LA in leaves suggest that the forest litter layer is an efficient storage media for PAHs. Degradation of three-ring PAHs in litter under the field conditions follows first-order kinetics (R 2  = 0.81), while the degradation is moderate for four-ring PAHs and insignificant for five- and six-ring PAHs. The yearly net cumulative deposition of PAHs through forest litterfall in the whole Dinghushan forest area over the sampling year was about 1.1 kg, 46% of the initial deposition (2.4 kg). Background and Objective: miR-22-3p functions as a tumor suppressor by targeting a variety of downstream genes, while its role and downstream targets in gastric cancer (GC) remain to be determined. We aimed to explore the role of miR-22-3p in gastric cancer and the potential mechanism., Methods: miR-22-3p mimic and inhibitor were used to overexpress or knockdown the expression of miR-22-3p separately. Quantitative real-time PCR (RT-qPCR) and Western blot were used to analyse the abundance of mRNA or protein level respectively. CCK-8 assay, cell colony formation assay, and flow cytometry were implemented to investigate the effect of miR-22-3p on gastric cancer cell proliferation and apoptosis. Luciferase assay was used to evaluate the role of miR-22-3p on the expression of glycolytic enzyme enolase 1 (ENO1)., Results: In this study, we found that miR-22-3p was downregulated in GC cells. By transfecting the cells with miR-22-3p inhibitors or mimics, we showed that miR-22-3p suppressed GC cell proliferation and migration, as well as triggered cell death. In addition, we discovered that miR-22-3p was engaged in glycolysis by controlling the generation of lactate as well as the consumption of glucose. TargetScan database suggested that the ENO1 may be a target of the miR-22-3p, and the luciferase experiment verified this hypothesis. Recovery assays showed that the proliferation and migration of GC cells suppressed by miR-22-3p could be rescued by overexpression of ENO1., Conclusion: Collectively, we identified a new axis of miR-22-3p/ENO1 for GC development, which could be investigated as a therapeutic target for GC.

Although electrochemical detection of microliters-level solutions is attractive for analysis of low-amount biological samples, its performance could be weakened by limited mass transfer due to low Reynolds number and laminar flow. Herein we designed a 3D-printed electroanalytical device to apply vibration for improvement of mass transfer during electrochemical detection. In our approach, the droplet-size sample solution containing Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA, as a model) was directly applied on the effective surface of a disposable working electrode. We demonstrated that vibration could enhance electrochemical responses of IAA more on the rough surface than on the smooth surface of the working electrodes. After optimization, the sensitivity for electrochemical detection of a 20-μL droplet under vibration with the voltage of 7 V increased more than 100% compared with the static condition. The enhanced electrochemical responses brought by vibration could be achieved reproducibly, which could be ascribed to improved mass transfer. Our strategy could be practically applied for differentiation of IAA in different tissues of Marchantia polymorpha with enhanced responses. Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), an important economic cold-water fish worldwide, is severely threatened by viruses and bacteria in the farming industry. The vibriosis outbreak has caused a significant setback to aquaculture. Vibrio anguillarum, one of the common disease-causing vibriosis associated with severe lethal vibriosis in aquaculture, infects fish mainly by adsorption and invasion of the skin, gills, lateral line and intestine. To investigate the defense mechanism of rainbow trout against the pathogen after infection with Vibrio anguillarum, trout were intraperitoneally injected by Vibrio anguillarum and divided into symptomatic group (SG) and asymptomatic group (AG) according to the phenotype. RNA-Seq technology was used to evaluate the transcriptional signatures of liver, gill and intestine of trout injected with Vibrio anguillarum (SG and AG) and corresponding control groups (CG(A) and CG(B)). The GO and KEGG enrichment analyses were used to investigate the mechanisms underlying the differences in susceptibility to Vibrio anguillarum. Results showed that in SG, immunomodulatory genes in the cytokine network were activated and tissue function-related genes were down-regulated, while apoptosis mechanisms were activated. However, AG responded to Vibrio anguillarum infection by activating complement related immune defenses, while metabolism and function related genes were up-regulated. Conclusively, a rapid and effective immune and inflammatory response can successfully defend Vibrio anguillarum infection. However, a sustained inflammatory response can lead to tissue and organ damage and cause death. Glufosinate-ammonium, the second largest transgene crop resistant herbicide, is classified as a mobile persistent pollutant by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agencybecause of its slow decomposition and easy mobile transfer in a water environment. The chronic and multigeneration toxicity of this compound to environmental organisms are alarming. In this study, racemic glufosinate-ammonium and the effective isomer, l-glufosinate-ammonium, were used as the test agents. The developmental, neurotoxic and reproductive toxicities of Caenorhabditis elegans to their parents and progeny were studied by continuous exposure in water at concentrations of 0.1, 1, 10 and 100 μg/L. The causes of toxicity differences were analysed from oxidative stress and transcription levels. Through oxidative stress of C. elegans, racemic glufosinate-ammonium and l-glufosinate-ammonium both mediated the developmental toxicity (shortened developmental cycle, reduced body length and width, promoted ageingand decreased longevity), neurotoxicity (inhibited head swinging, body bending frequency and acetylcholinesterase [AchE] activity) and reproductive toxicity (significant reductions in the number of eggs and offspring in vivo and induced apoptosis of gonadal cells). These phenomena caused oxidative damage (protein and membrane lipid peroxidation) and further induced apoptosis. The changes in various indicators caused by racemic glufosinate-ammonium exposure were more significant than those caused by l-glufosinate-ammonium exposure, and the reproduction-related indicators were more significant than the developmental and neurological indicators. A continuous accumulation of toxicity was observed after multiple generations of continuous exposure. Solid catalyst is widely recognized as an effective strategy to control the chirality of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). However, it is still not compatible with high density in horizontal arrays. "Trojan" catalysts strategy is one of the most effective methods to realize SWNTs with high density and has great potential in chirality control. Here, the co-realization of high density and chirality controlling for SWNTs in a low-temperature growth process is reported based on the developed solid "Trojan" catalyst. High temperature "Trojan" catalyst formation process provides sufficient catalyst number to acquire high density. These liquid "Trojan" catalysts are cooled to solid state by adopting low growth temperature (540 °C), which can be good template to realize the chirality controlling of SWNTs with exposing six-fold symmetry face, (111). Finally, (9, 6) and (13, 1) SWNTs enriched horizontal array with the purity of ≈90% and density of 4 tubes µm -1 is realized. The comparison between the distribution of initial catalysts and the density of as-grown tubes indicates no sacrificing on catalysts number to improve chirality selectivity. Combustion of domestic solid fuels is a significant source of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Some oxygenated PAHs (o-PAHs) and PAHs with molecular weight of 302 (MW302 PAHs) are more toxic than the traditional 16 priority PAHs, whereas their emissions were much less elucidated. This study characterized the size-dependent emissions of parent PAHs (p-PAHs), o-PAHs, and MW302 PAHs from various combustion sources. The estimated emission factors (eEFs) from biomass burning sources were highest for most of the PAHs (391-8928 μg/kg), much higher than that of anthracite coal combustion (43.0-145 μg/kg), both which were operated in an indoor stove. Cigarette smoking had a high eEF of o-PAHs (240 ng/g). MW302 PAHs were not found in the emissions of smoking, cooking, and vehicular exhausts. Particle-size distributions of PAHs were compound- and source-dependent, and the tendency to associate with smaller particles was observed especially in biomass burning and cigarette smoking sources. Furthermore, the inter-source differences in PAH eEFs were associated with their dominance in fine particles. PAH composition profiles also varied with the particle size, showing increasing contributions of large-molecule PAHs with decreasing sizes in most cases. The size distributions of p-PAHs are much more significantly dependent on their n-octanol/air partition coefficients and vapor pressures than those of o-PAHs, suggesting differences in mechanisms governing their distributions. Several molecular diagnostic ratios (MDRs), including two based on MW302 PAHs, specific to these combustion scenarios were identified. However, the MDRs within some sources are also strongly size-dependent, providing a new explanation for the uncertainty in their application for source identification of PAHs. A novel thio-Ritter-type reaction of alkyl bromides, nitriles, and hydrogen sulfide has been explored, providing a straightforward approach toward functionally important thioamides. This transformation features a broad substrate scope, operational simplicity, use of available feedstock chemicals, and late-stage functionalizations of bioactive molecules. The reaction mechanism is also proposed.

In order to improve the accuracy and stability of runoff prediction. This study proposed a dynamic model averaging method with Time-varying weight (TV-DMA). Using this method, an integrated prediction model framework for runoff prediction was constructed. The framework determines the main variables suitable for runoff prediction through correlation analysis, and uses TV-DMA and deep learning algorithm to construct an integrated prediction model for runoff. The results demonstrate that the current monthly runoff, the runoff of the previous month, the current monthly temperature, the temperature of the previous month and the current monthly rainfall were the variables suitable for runoff prediction. The results of runoff prediction show that the TV-DMA model has the highest prediction accuracy (with 0.97 Nash-efficiency coefficient (NSE)) and low uncertainty. The interval band of uncertainty was 33.3%-65.5% lower than single model. And the prediction performance of the single model and TV-DMA model in flood season is obviously lower than that in non-flood season. In addition, this study indicate that the current monthly runoff, rainfall and temperature are the important factor affecting the runoff prediction, which should be paid special attention in the runoff prediction., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Objective: To investigate the circumstances that lead to acute exacerbation readmission of elderly patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) within 30 days and to explore the influencing factors of readmission using a structural equation model to provide evidence for medical staff so that effective intervention measures can be taken., Methods: The convenience sampling method was used to select 1120 elderly patients with COPD from the respiratory departments of thirteen general hospitals in the Ningxia region, China, from April 2019 to August 2020, who then completed a survey questionnaire. The survey questionnaire contained a general data questionnaire and the modified Medical Research Council, activities of daily living, geriatric depression scale and COPD assessment test scales., Results: The readmission rate of patients with COPD presenting with acute exacerbation within 30 days was determined to be 21.52%. Therefore, the modified model measures data accurately. The results showed that seasonal factors, family rehabilitation, age factors and overall health status were direct factors in the acute exacerbation readmission of patients with COPD within 30 days of hospital discharge. Smoking is not only a direct factor for acute exacerbation readmission within 30 days but also an indirect factor through disease status; disease status and chronic disease are not only direct factors for acute exacerbation readmission within 30 days but also indirect factors through the patient's overall health status., Conclusions: The rate of patients with COPD presenting with acute exacerbation within 30 days is high; while taking measures to prevent readmission based on influencing factors that directly impact admission rates, attention should also be paid to the interaction between these factors., (© 2022. Mitogen-activated protein kinase kinases (MKKs) are intermediate kinases of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) signaling pathways. MKKs are activated by mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase kinase (MKKK) and then the activated MKKs trigger the activation of downstream MAPKs. MAPK signaling pathways play an important role in regulating immune functions including apoptosis and inflammation. However, studies on identification and characterization of mkk repertoire in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) are still limited. Trout experienced 4 rounds (4R) of whole genome duplication (WGD), thus exhibiting increased paralogs of mkks with potentially functional diversity. In this study, we identified 17 mkk genes in trout and the following bacterial challenge (Vibrio anguillarum) studies showed functional diversity of different mkk subtypes. Vibrio anguillarum infection resulted in significantly up-regulated mkk2 subtypes in spleen and liver, and mkk4b3 in spleen, suggesting immunomodulation was regulated by activation of ERK, p38 and JNK pathways. Compared to other mkk subtypes, mkk6s were down-regulated in symptomatic group, rather than asymptomatic group. The organisms present negative feedback on MAPK activation, thus reducing extra damage to cells. We observed down-regulated mkk6s with up-regulated genes (dusp1 & dusp2) involved in negative feedback of MAPK activation. Based on these results, we might propose the distinct expression patterns of genes associated with MAPK pathways resulted in different phenotypes and symptoms of trout in response to bacterial challenge., (Copyright © 2021. The ubiquitination of the hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) is mediated by interacting with the von Hippel-Lindau protein (VHL), and is associated with cancer, chronic anemia, and ischemia. VHL, an E3 ligase, has been reported to degrade HIF-1 for decades, however, there are few successful inhibitors currently. Poor understanding of the binding pocket and a lack of in-depth exploration of the interactions between two proteins are the main reasons. Hence, we developed an effective strategy to identify and design new inhibitors for protein-protein interaction targets. The hydroxyproline (Hyp564) of HIF-1α contributed the key interaction between HIF-1α and VHL. In this study, detailed information of the binding pocket were explored by alanine scanning, site-directed mutagenesis and molecular dynamics simulations. Interestingly, we found the interaction(s) between Y565 and H110 played a key role in the binding of VHL/HIF-1α. Based on the interactions, 8 derivates of VH032, 16a-h, were synthesized by introducing various groups bounded to H110. Further assay on protein and cellular level exhibited that 16a-h accessed higher binding affinity to VHL and markable or modest improvement in stabilization of HIF-1α or HIF-1α-OH in HeLa cells. Silicate mineral weathering (dissolution) plays important roles in soil formation and global biogeochemical cycling. In this study, a combination of genomics, transcriptomics, and genetics was used to identify the molecular basis of mineral weathering activity and acid tolerance in Pseudomonas azotoformans F77. Biotite was chosen as a silicate mineral to investigate mineral weathering. The genome of strain F77 was sequenced, and the genes significantly upregulated when grown in the presence of biotite included mineral weathering-related genes associated with gluconic acid metabolism, flagellar assembly, and pilus biosynthesis and acid tolerance-related genes associated with neutralizing component production, reducing power, and proton efflux. The biotite-weathering behaviors of strain F77 and its mutants that were created by deleting the tkt , tal , and gntP genes, which are involved in gluconic acid metabolism, and the potF , nuoF , and gdtO genes, which are involved in acid tolerance, were determined. The Fe and Al concentrations in the strain F77-inoculated medium increased 2.2- to 13.7-fold compared to the controls. The cell numbers of strain F77 increased over time, while the pH values in the medium ranged from 3.75 to 3.90 between 20 and 36 h of incubation. The release of Al and Fe was significantly reduced in the F77 Δ tal , F77 Δ gntP , F77 Δ potF , and F77 Δ nuoF mutants. Bacterial growth was significantly reduced in the presence of biotite in the F77 Δ potF and F77 Δ nuoF mutants. Our results demonstrated the acid tolerance of strain F77 and suggested that multiple genes and metabolic pathways in strain F77 are involved in biotite weathering and acid tolerance during the mineral weathering process. IMPORTANCE Acid production and tolerance play important roles in effective and persistent mineral weathering in bacteria, although the molecular mechanisms governing acid production and acid tolerance in bacteria have not been fully elucidated. In this study, the molecular mechanisms underlying biotite (as a silicate mineral) weathering (dissolution) and acid tolerance of P. azotoformans F77 were characterized using genomics, transcriptomics, and genetics analyses. Our results showed that the genes and metabolic pathways for gluconic acid metabolism, flagellar assembly, and pilus biosynthesis may play important roles in mineral weathering by strain F77. Notably, the genes associated with neutralizing component production, reducing power, and proton efflux may be related to acid tolerance in strain F77. The expression of these acid production- and acid tolerance-related genes was observed to be increased by biotite in strain F77. Our findings may help to elucidate the molecular mechanisms governing mineral weathering and, especially, acid tolerance in mineral-weathering bacteria.

Background: Severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) is a common acute abdominal disease with high morbidity and mortality. However, the mechanism underlying SAP is still unclear., Methods: Cerulean and LPS (Cer-LPS) was used to establish a rat model and an in vitro model of SAP. qRT-PCR, western blot and IHC were determined to analyse the expression of mRNA and proteins. IL-1β, TNF-α and IL-6 levels were measured applying ELISA. H&E staining was determined to observe the pathological changes. Apoptosis was tested by AV-PI staining using flow cytometry. CCK8 assay was taken to detect cell viability. Cell migration was assessed by transwell assay. Tube formation assay was conducted to evaluate angiogenesis. Luciferase assay was used to detect relationship of miR-20b-5p and AKT3., Results: MiR-20b-5p was lowly expressed in SAP models both in vivo and in vitro . Overexpression of miR-20b-5p restrained inflammation and apoptosis in Cer-LPS treated pancreatic acinar cells. Furthermore, miR-20b-5p promoted the angiogenesis of vascular endothelial cells, since the viability, migration and the capability of tube formation were increased by miR-20b-5p. Mechanically, miR-20b-5p directly targeted AKT3 to promote autophagy. Furthermore, miR-20b-5p could prevent the inflammation, apoptosis and enhance angiogenesis via enhancing autophagy, which was verified in vivo ., Conclusion: This study demonstrated miR-20b-5p attenuates SAP through directly targeting AKT3 to regulate autophagy, subsequently inhibit inflammation and apoptosis, and promote angiogenesis. Our findings suggested a novel target of miR-20b-5p for the therapy of SAP.

Objective: Function of calmin (CLMN) was rarely reported in human diseases, especially in tumor. Present study initially assessed the significance of CLMN in breast invasive carcinoma (BRCA)., Methods: Expressions of CLMN containing mRNA and protein in BRCA was firstly assessed, and association of CLMN mRNA expression with clinical phenotypes of BRCA patients was analyzed as well. Prognostic value of CLMN in BRCA was subsequently predicted based on the clinical characteristics of patients. Finally, the potential biological function associated with CLMN involved in BRCA was revealed., Results: (1) The mRNA expression of CLMN was lower in BRCA compared with that in normal patients ( P <0.001). However, result of CLMN total protein expression was opposite ( P <0.05). (2) The mRNA expression of CLMN was statistically associated with BRCA patient's age, gender, PR status, ER status, histological type, tumor stage, copy number, and methylation level (all P <0.05). (3) Compared with low expression group, high expression of CLMN was conducive to the overall survival of BRCA patients ( P =0.0011). Detailed, survival difference between CLMN high and low expression groups was observed in patients with stage 1 ( P =0.0250), positive ER status ( P =0.0042), negative HER status ( P =0.0433), luminal A ( P =0.0065), luminal B ( P =0.0123) and positive lymph node status ( P =0.0069). Pathway analysis suggested that CLMN mainly participated in cell cycle process ( P <0.05) and exerted inhibition effect on the cell cycle involved in BRCA ( P <0.05)., Conclusion: CLMN mRNA high expression prolonged the survival time of patients and caused a favorable prognosis. Reactions of divalent metal salts with 4,4-oxybis(N-(pyridine-4-yl)-benzamide), L , and naphthalene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid (1,4-H 2 NDC) in various solvents gave [Zn( L )(1,4-NDC)·H 2 O] n , 1 , [Cd( L )(1,4-NDC)(H 2 O)·MeOH] n , 2 , and [Co( L )(1,4-NDC)(H 2 O) 0.5 ·MeOH] n , 3 , which have been structurally characterized. Complexes 1 - 3 show eight-fold interpenetrating frameworks with the dia topology, which exhibit porosities substantiated by CO 2 adsorption, whereas 1 and 2 manifest stability in aqueous environments and show high selectivity toward sensing of mesitylene molecules and Fe 3+ ions with low detection limits and good reusability up to five cycles.

Herein, we report the synthesis of 2-spirocyclohexylindolines based on a Lewis acid mediated cyclization. This diastereoselective procedure provides the target structures in a straightforward way via dual activation.

Background: Qing-Yi Decoction (QYD) is a classic precompounded prescription with satisfactory clinical efficacy on acute pancreatitis (AP). However, the chemical profile and overall molecular mechanism of QYD in treating AP have not been clarified. Methods: In the present study, a rapid, simple, sensitive and reliable ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QTOF-MS)-based chemical profile was first established. An integration strategy of network pharmacology analysis and molecular docking based identified ingredients was further performed to screen out the potential targets and pathways involved in the treatment of QYD on AP. Finally, SD rats with acute pancreatitis were constructed to verify the predicted results through a western blot experiment. Results: A total of 110 compounds, including flavonoids, phenolic acids, alkaloids, monoterpenes, iridoids, triterpenes, phenylethanoid glycosides, anthraquinones and other miscellaneous compounds were identified, respectively. Eleven important components, 47 key targets and 15 related pathways based on network pharmacology analysis were obtained. Molecular docking simulation indicated that ERK1/2, c-Fos and p65 might play an essential role in QYD against AP. Finally, the western blot experiments showed that QYD could up-regulate the expression level of ERK1/2 and c-Fos, while down-regulate the expression level of p65. The plant bug Lygus pratensis Linnaeus (Hemiptera: Miridae) is an important insect pest of alfalfa in grassland farming in northern China. A field population of L. pratensis was selected in the laboratory for 14 consecutive generations with lambda-cyhalothrin to generate 42.555-fold resistance. Selection also induced low cross-resistance to imidacloprid and beta-cypermethrin, and medium cross-resistance to deltamethrin. Realized heritability (h2) of lambda-cyhalothrin resistance was 0.339. Susceptible baselines of L. pratensis were established for five insecticides using the glass-vial method, the values of which were 6.849, 3.423, 8.778, 3.559, and 117.553 ng/cm2 for phoxim, methomyl, imidacloprid, lambda-cyhalothrin, and avermectin, respectively, along with the calculated LC99 diagnostic doses. This resistance risk assessment study suggests that a high risk of lambda-cyhalothrin resistance exists in the field. In addition, a 5-year field investigation of resistance monitoring of L. pratensis was conducted in seven alfalfa regions in farming-pastoral ecotones in northern China. The resistance levels of most populations were very low for phoxim, methomyl, and avermectin, with an upward trend for lambda-cyhalothrin resistance in the DK (Dengkou County), TKT (Tuoketuo County), XL (Xilinhot), and LX (Linxi County) populations during 2015-2019, and medium resistance level to imidacloprid in the TKT population in five years we sampled. The study provided information on chemical control, lambda-cyhalothrin resistance development, baseline susceptibility, and the status of resistance to five commonly-used insecticides against L. pratensis. The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae), is a polyphagous and highly destructive agricultural pest that invaded mainland China in 2019. To facilitate research on this pest, it is important to formulate and formalize a suitable artificial diet based on local ingredients. In this study, the life histories of fall armyworm reared on corn leaves and four artificial diets were recorded. The four artificial diets used were: soybean and sucrose-based (SS), soybean and wheat germ-based (SW), chickpea and wheat germ-based (CPW), and corn and soybean-based (CNS). The intrinsic rates of increase were 0.1957, 0.1981, 0.1816, 0.1748, and 0.1464 per day in the fall armyworm populations fed corn leaves, CNS, SW, CPW, and SS, respectively. The highest fecundity (F = 1225.4 eggs per female) and net reproduction rate (R0 = 544.7 offspring per individual) were observed for the fall armyworm reared on the CNS diet. Moreover, the developmental rate, survival rate, and fecundity were used to calculate the projection of the population growth. Projection results showed that the fall armyworm populations can increase considerably faster when fed the CNS diet compared with the other diets. In addition, the mass-rearing system showed that the most efficient and economical strategy would be to rear the fall armyworm on the CNS diet. The ongoing outbreak of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread rapidly throughout China and other countries, and has been characterized as a pandemic. With the strict prevention and control measures implemented by the Chinese government, the spread of the epidemic in China has come under preliminary control by the end of February, 2020, whereas the situation of some countries outside China is not optimistic and raises great public concern. In fighting COVID-19, radiologic examinations played a critical role in the early diagnosis of COVID-19, and could also help assess disease course and severity. There is an urgent need to share useful experience and effective measures internationally. This article outlines the collaborative actions and efforts by the Chinese radiology field and the situation of front-line health care workers in radiology departments to present the world with experiences and examples of Chinese radiology during the COVID-19 outbreak.

A series of Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) coordination polymers and dinuclear metallocycles containing 4-aminopyridine (4-ampy) and benzenedicarboxylate ligands, {[M(4-ampy) 2 (1,4-BDC)]·H 2 O·CH 3 CH 2 OH} n (M = Ni, 1a ; Co, 1b , 1,4-H 2 BDC = benzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid), {[Ni 2 (4-ampy) 4 (1,3-BDC) 2 ]·H 2 O·CH 3 CH 2 OH} n (1,3-H 2 BDC = benzene-1,3-dicarboxylic acid), 2 , [M 2 (4-ampy) 4 (1,2-BDC) 2 ] (M = Ni, 3a ; Co, 3b , 1,2-H 2 BDC = benzene-1,2-dicarboxylic acid), [Co(4-ampy) 2 (1,3-BDC)] n, 4 , {[Cu(4-ampy) 2 (1,4-BDC)] CH 3 CH 2 OH} n , 5a , and {[Cu(4-ampy) 2 (1,4-BDC)]·H 2 O} n , 5b ·H 2 O, are reported, which were hydrothermally prepared and structurally characterized by using single crystal X-ray diffraction. Complexes 1a and 1b are isomorphous 1D zigzag chains, while 2 displays a concave-convex chain and 3a and 3b are dinuclear metallocycles that differ in the boding modes of the 1,2-BDC 2- ligands, forming a 3D and a 2D supramolecular structures with the pcu and sql topologies, respectively. Complex 4 exhibit a 1D helical chain and complexes 5a and 5b ·H 2 O are 1D linear and zigzag chains, in which the Cu 2 -1,4-BDC 2- units adopt the cis and trans configurations, respectively. A novel irreversible structural transformation due to cis → trans isomerization of the Cu 2 -1,4-BDC 2- units was observed in 5b ⋅H 2 O and 5a upon water adsorption of the desolvated product of 5b ·H 2 O.

Objectives: MicroRNAs have been considered to be closely related with the development of severe acute pancreatitis (SAP), and microRNA-375 (miR-375) was believed to be a marker of SAP. We aim to investigate the role of miR-375 in regulating SP., Methods: Cerulein and lipopolysaccharide were used to establish the models of SAP. AR42J cell line was chosen for study in vitro. Flow cytometry was applied for assessing apoptosis. The contents of inflammatory factors were detected with related enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction assays. Hematoxylin and eosin staining was applied to observe the pathological changes of pancreatic tissues. Immunohistochemistry analysis was conducted for investigating the expression of light chain 3., Results: The level of miR-375 in pancreatitis tissues and cell lines was upregulated. Overexpression of miR-375 promoted inflammation and the apoptosis of acinar cells through inhibiting autophagy. The binding site between miR-375 and ATG7 was identified, and miR-375 could directly regulate the ATG7. microRNA-375 suppressed autophagy and promoted inflammation and the apoptosis of acinar cells via targeting ATG7., Conclusions: We proved that miR-375 could inhibit autophagy and promote inflammation and the apoptosis of acinar cells through regulating ATG7. This study first proves that miR-375 modulates the development of SAP through targeting ATG7.

Understanding population quality and nitrogen utilization characteristics of direct seeding rice under water-nitrogen interaction could provide theoretical and practical basis for high yield and ample production of direct seeding rice. Hybrid rice F You 498 was used as the material. Three irrigation methods were set in this study: flooding irrigation (W 1 ), dry-wet alternate irrigation (W 2 ) and drying irrigation (W 3 ), with different ratio of base fertilizer: tiller fertilizer: panicle fertilizer at 5:3:2 (N 1 ), 3:3:4 (N 2 ), 3:1:6 (N 3 ), respectively. No nitrogen application (N 0 ) was set as the control. We investigated the effects of water-nitrogen interaction on population quality and nitrogen utilization characteristics of direct seeding rice, with the aim to clarify the relationship between population quality construction, nitrogen utilization characteristics and yield of direct seeding rice. The results showed that irrigation and N rate significantly interacted to affect dry matter accumulation, rice harvest index, heading high-efficiency leaf (the upper three leaves) dry weight, light transmittance rate at maturity stage, total nitrogen accumulation (TNA), apparent nitrogen use efficiency (ANE), nitrogen partial factor productivity (NPFP), nitrogen physiology efficiency, and rice yield. Taking population quality, yield and N fertilizer utilization characteristics into consideration, suitable panicle N-fertilizer under each irrigation mode was 20%-40% (N 1 -N 2 ). Panicle N-fertilizer reached 60% (N 3 ) and W 3 treatment would significantly reduce population quality, yield, nitrogen agronomy efficiency (NAE), NPFP of direct seeding rice. Yield and nitrogen utilization characteristics of direct seeding rice were significantly correlated with effective panicles, dry matter accumulation at maturity stage, other leaf (except the upper three leaves) dry weight reduction, total leaf dry weight reduction, and middle part and basel part light-receiving rate under water-nitrogen interaction. The dry-wet alternative (W 2 ) treatment could increase the rate of production til-lers, dry matter accumulation, rice harvest index, TNA, NAE and rice yield. W 2 combined with N 2 could improve population quality of direct seeding rice and realized the coordination and unification of high yield and efficient utilization of nitrogen, which is the best combination in this experiment.

Thermal reactions of cobalt(II) salts with flexible N,N' -bis(pyrid-3-ylmethyl)adipoamide ( L ) and angular 4,4'-sulfonyldibenzoic acid (H 2 SDA) in H 2 O and CH 3 OH afforded a pair of supramolecular isomers: [Co 2 ( L )(SDA) 2 ], 1 , and [Co 2 ( L )(SDA) 2 ]⋅CH 3 OH⋅H 2 O, 2 . The structure of complex 1 can be simplified as a one-dimensional (1D) looped chain with L ligands penetrating into the middles of squares, forming a new type of self-catenated net with the (4 2 ⋅5 4 )(4) 2 (5) 2 topology, whereas complex 2 displays a 2-fold interpenetrated 2D net with the rare (4 2 ⋅6 8 ⋅8⋅10 4 )(4) 2 -2,6L1 topology. While both complexes 1 and 2 display antiferromagnetism with strong spin-orbital coupling, the antiferromagnetism of 2 is accompanied by a cross-over behavior and probably a spin canting phenomenon.

The 56-day feeding trial was carried out to investigate the effects of dietary tryptophan (Trp) on growth performance, digestive and absorptive enzyme activities, intestinal antioxidant capacity, and appetite and GH-IGF axis-related genes expression of hybrid catfish (Pelteobagrus vachelli♀ × Leiocassis longirostris♂). A total of 864 hybrid catfish (21.82 ± 0.14 g) were fed six different experimental diets containing graded levels of Trp at 2.6, 3.1, 3.7, 4.2, 4.7, and 5.6 g kg -1 diet. The results indicated that dietary Trp increased (P < 0.05) (1) final body weight, percent weight gain, specific growth rate, feed intake, feed efficiency, and protein efficiency ratio; (2) fish body protein, lipid and ash contents, protein, and ash production values; (3) stomach weight, stomach somatic index, liver weight, intestinal weight, length and somatic index, and relative gut length; and (4) activities of pepsin in the stomach; trypsin, chymotrypsin, lipase, and amylase in the pancreas and intestine; and γ-glutamyl transpeptidase, Na + , K + -ATPase, and alkaline phosphatase in the intestine. Dietary Trp decreased malondialdehyde content, increased antioxidant enzyme activities and glutathione content, but downregulated Keap1 mRNA expression, and upregulated the expression of NPY, ghrelin, GH, GHR, IGF1, IGF2, IGF1R, PIK3Ca, AKT1, TOR, 4EBP1, and S6K1 genes. These results indicated that Trp improved hybrid catfish growth performance, digestive and absorptive ability, antioxidant status, and appetite and GH-IGF axis-related gene expression. Based on the quadratic regression analysis of PWG, SGR, and FI, the dietary Trp requirement of hybrid catfish (21.82-39.64 g) was recommended between 3.96 and 4.08 g kg -1 diet (9.4-9.7 g kg -1 of dietary protein).

Objective: To identify the blood group of a patient with DEL phenotype combined with positive direct anti-human globulin test and to analyze the pedigree., Methods: Routine serological reagents were used for serological analysis of RhD blood group in the pedigree members. Exons and flanking sequences of RHD gene were amplified, sequenced and analyzed for heterozygosity. The familial genetic state of DEL phenotype was further analyze in the family members., Results: The DAT was strongly positive in the proband. The 1227G>A allele (RHD*DEL1) was present in the exon 9 of RHD gene, and the mother was the carrier of RHD*DEL1. The proband was identified as RHD+/RHD-, suggesting the CD 1227A e/Cde haplotype., Conclusion: The proband is DEL phenotype (RHD*DEL1).

Four one-dimensional (1D) mercury(II) halide coordination polymers have been synthesized by using a semi-rigid N -donor ligand, 2,2'-(1,4-phenylene)-bis( N -(pyridin-3-yl)acetamide) (1,4-pbpa). While [Hg(1,4-pbpa)Cl₂·CH₃OH] n , 1 , forms a sinusoidal chain, the complexes [Hg(1,4-pbpa)X₂] n (X = Cl, 2 ; Br, 3 ; I, 4 ) are helical. The sinusoidal 1 undergoes reversible structural transformation with helical 2 upon removal and uptake of CH₃OH, which was accompanied with the conformation adjustment of the 1,4-pbpa ligand from trans anti-anti to trans syn-anti. Pyridyl ring rotation of the 1,4-pbpa ligand that results in the change of the ligand conformation is proposed for the initiation of the structural transformation.

The total variation (TV) regularization has been widely used in statistically iterative cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) reconstruction, showing ability to preserve object edges. However, the TV regularization can also produce staircase effect and tend to over-smooth the reconstructed images due to its piecewise constant assumption. In this study, we proposed to use the structure tensor total variation (STV) that penalizes the eigenvalues of the structure tensor for CBCT reconstruction. The STV penalty extends the TV penalty, with many important properties maintained such as convexity and rotation and translation invariance. The STV penalty utilizes gradient information more effectively and has a stronger ability to capture local image structural variation. The objective function was constructed with the penalized weighted least-square (PWLS) strategy and the gradient descent (GD) method was used to optimize the objective function. Besides, we investigated whether the norms involved in the STV penalty affected the reconstruction performance and found that the l1-norm gave the better performance than the l2-norm and l ∞-norm. We also examined performance of the STV penalties constructed using different kernel functions and found that the STV with the Gaussian kernel had the best performance, and the STVs with Uniform, Logistic, and Sigmoid kernels had similar performance to each other. We evaluated our reconstruction method with the STV penalty on computer simulated phantoms and physical phantoms. The results demonstrated that STV led to better reconstruction performance than TV, both visually and quantitatively. For the Catphan 600 physical phantom, the STV1 penalty was 175% and 623% better than the low-dose FDK and the high-dose FDK, and 14% better than the TV penalty at the matched noise level, according to the average contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR); while for the Compressed Sensing simulation phantom, the peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) of reconstructed results using STV1, STV2, and STV ∞ were 40.67 dB, 38.72 dB, and 37.40 dB, respectively, all being significantly better than 36.84 dB using TV.

Atomic clocks based on laser-cooled atoms are widely used as primary frequency standards. Deploying such cold atom clocks (CACs) in space is foreseen to have many applications. Here we present tests of a CAC operating in space. In orbital microgravity, the atoms are cooled, trapped, launched, and finally detected after being interrogated by a microwave field using the Ramsey method. Perturbing influences from the orbital environment on the atoms such as varying magnetic fields and the passage of the spacecraft through Earth's radiation belt are also controlled and mitigated. With appropriate parameters settings, closed-loop locking of the CAC is realized in orbit and an estimated short-term frequency stability close to 3.0 × 10 -13 τ -1/2 has been attained. The demonstration of the long-term operation of cold atom clock in orbit opens possibility on the applications of space-based cold atom sensors.

Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) plays an important role in radiation therapy. Statistical iterative reconstruction (SIR) algorithms with specially designed penalty terms provide good performance for low-dose CBCT imaging. Among others, the total variation (TV) penalty is the current state-of-the-art in removing noises and preserving edges, but one of its well-known limitations is its staircase effect. Recently, various penalty terms with higher order differential operators were proposed to replace the TV penalty to avoid the staircase effect, at the cost of slightly blurring object edges. We developed a novel SIR algorithm using a neural network for CBCT reconstruction. We used a data-driven method to learn the "potential regularization term" rather than design a penalty term manually. This approach converts the problem of designing a penalty term in the traditional statistical iterative framework to designing and training a suitable neural network for CBCT reconstruction. We proposed using transfer learning to overcome the data deficiency problem and an iterative deblurring approach specially designed for the CBCT iterative reconstruction process during which the noise level and resolution of the reconstructed images may change. Through experiments conducted on two physical phantoms, two simulation digital phantoms, and patient data, we demonstrated the excellent performance of the proposed network-based SIR for CBCT reconstruction, both visually and quantitatively. Our proposed method can overcome the staircase effect, preserve both edges and regions with smooth intensity transition, and provide reconstruction results at high resolution and low noise level.

By using a new flexible tetracarboxylic acid, bis(3,5-dicarboxyphenyl) adipoamide, H₄ L ¹, and its isomer, bis(2,5-dicarboxyphenyl)adipoamide, H₄ L ², three Mg(II) coordination polymers, {[Mg₂( L ¹)(H₂O)₂]·2EtOH·3H₂O} n , 1 , [Mg₂( L ¹)(H₂O)₈] n , 2 , and {[Mg₂( L ²)(H₂O)₆]·H₂O} n , 3 , have been hydrothermally synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Complexes 1 and 2 are the solvent ratio-dependent hydrothermally stable products. The tetracarboxylate ligand of complex 1 connects eight Mg(II) ions through nine oxygen atoms, resulting in a three-dimensional (3D) 5-connected uninodal net with a rare non-interpenetrating (4⁴.6⁶)-pcu-5-Pmna topology, whereas those of 2 and 3 link four Mg(II) ions through four oxygen atoms and six Mg(II) ions through six oxygen atoms, forming a 1D linear chain and a 3,6-connected 2-nodal 3D net having {4.6²}₂{4².6 10 .8³}- rtl topology, respectively. Complex 1 shows a series of structural transformations on heating to 200 °C and almost reversible structural transformation when the activated products were immersed in a mixture of ethanol and water or on hydrothermal. Likewise, complex 2 exhibits a reversible structural transformation on heating/hydrothermal, while 3 exhibits irreversible structural transformations. Ten coordination polymers constructed from divalent metal salts, polycarboxylic acids, and bis-pyridyl-bis-amide ligands with different donor atom positions and flexibility are reported. They were structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. While complex 7 is a 2D layer with the (4²·6⁷·8)(4²·6)-3,5L2 topology and 8 is a 2-fold interpenetrated 3D framework with the pcu topology, complexes 9 and 10 are self-catenated 3D frameworks with the (4 24 ·6⁴)-8T2 and the (4⁴·6 10 ·8)- mab topologies, respectively. The effects of the identity of the metal center, the ligand isomerism, and the flexibility of the spacer ligands on the structural diversity of these divalent coordination polymers are discussed. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) has been widely used in radiation therapy. For accurate patient setup and treatment target localization, it is important to obtain high-quality reconstruction images. The total variation (TV) penalty has shown the state-of-the-art performance in suppressing noise and preserving edges for statistical iterative image reconstruction, but it sometimes leads to the so-called staircase effect. In this paper, we proposed to use a new family of penalties-the Hessian Schatten (HS) penalties-for the CBCT reconstruction. Consisting of the second-order derivatives, the HS penalties are able to reflect the smooth intensity transitions of the underlying image without introducing the staircase effect. We discussed and compared the behaviors of several convex HS penalties with orders 1, 2, and for CBCT reconstruction. We used the majorization-minimization approach with a primal-dual formulation for the corresponding optimization problem. Experiments on two digital phantoms and two physical phantoms demonstrated the proposed penalty family's outstanding performance over TV in suppressing the staircase effect, and the HS penalty with order 1 had the best performance among the HS penalties tested.

Air pollution is one of the major problems of the modern world. The popularization and powerful functions of smartphone applications enable people to participate in urban sensing to better know about the air problems surrounding them. Data sampling is one of the most important problems that affect the sensing performance. In this paper, we propose an Adaptive Sampling Scheme for Urban Air Quality (AS-air) through participatory sensing. Firstly, we propose to find the pattern rules of air quality according to the historical data contributed by participants based on Apriori algorithm. Based on it, we predict the on-line air quality and use it to accelerate the learning process to choose and adapt the sampling parameter based on Q -learning.
