Pyrazinamide is a first line drug used for the treatment of tuberculosis, a pathology that caused the death of more than 1.3 million people in the world during 2022, according to WHO, being a drug of current interest due to its relevance in pharmaceutical and medical sciences. In this context, solubility is one of the most important physicochemical parameters in the development and/or optimization of new pharmaceutical forms, so the present work aims to present a thermodynamic study of the solubility of pyrazinamide in nine organic solvents of pharmaceutical interest. Using the shake-flask method and UV/Vis spectrophotometry, the solubility of this drug was determined at 9 temperatures; the maximum solubility was obtained in dimethyl sulfoxide at 318.15 K (x2=0.0816±0.004) and the minimum in cyclohexane at 283.15 K (1.73±0.05×10-5). From the apparent solubility data, the thermodynamic functions of solution and mixing were calculated, indicating an endothermic process. In addition, the solubility parameter of pyrazinamide was calculated using the Hoftyzer-van Krevelen (32.90 MPa 1/2 ) and Bustamante (28.14 MPa 1/2 ) methods. The maximum solubility was reached in dimethyl sulfoxide and the minimum in cyclohexane. As for the thermodynamic functions, the entropy drives the solution process in all cases. In relation to the solubility parameter, it can be analyzed that the mathematical models offer approximations; however, the experimental data are still primordial at the time of inferring any process.

Inkjet printing, a highly promising technique for the cost-effective fabrication of large-scale organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs), typically necessitates the intricate alignment of precisely patterned insulating layers. Recently, we introduced a unique single-step inkjet printing process that produces well-patterned microinlaid spots of functional compounds through insulating polymer layers. This approach exploits lateral phase separation between the solute of functional compounds and the polymer, allowing the simultaneous spatial etching of the polymer and the infilling of the solute using a single inkjet-printed sessile droplet. Here, we demonstrate that the interaction between the solvent and polymer, as well as the solute and polymer, critically determines the precision and efficiency of printing. This is particularly evident when using either the insulating poly(vinylpyridine) isomer of poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) or poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P2VP) with chloroform as a solvent, which allows for a detailed examination of these interactions based on certain solubility parameters. Micro-Raman spectroscopy reveals that the self-organizing capability of the microinlaid spots with P4VP is superior to that with P2VP. This is due to the fact that P2VP shows higher affinity to the solvent and causes imperfect phase separation as compared to P4VP. As a result, a performance evaluation demonstrates enhanced device performance for inkjet-printed green micro-OLEDs with P4VP, exhibiting a higher external quantum efficiency of 3.3% compared to that of 2.3% achieved with P2VP. These findings elucidate the important roles of solvent-polymer and solute-polymer interactions in the inkjet printing process, leading to interfacial control of inkjet printing technique for the cost-effective production of high-performance and high-resolution micro-OLEDs.

Compaction pressure can induce an undesirable solid-state polymorphic transition in drugs, fragmentation, loss of coated pellet integrity, and the decreased viability and vitality of microorganisms. Thus, the excipients with increased plasticity can be considered as an option to decrease the undesirable effects of compaction pressure. This study aims to increase the plasticity (to reduce the mean yield pressure; Py ) of dried microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) by loading it with a specially selected plasticizer. Diethyl citrate (DEC), water, and glycerol were the considered plasticizers. Computation of solubility parameters was used to predict the miscibility of MCC with plasticizers (possible plasticization effect). Plasticizer-loaded MCC spheres with 5.0 wt.% of water, 5.2 wt.% of DEC, and 4.2 wt.% glycerol were obtained via the solvent method, followed by solvent evaporation. Plasticizer-loaded formulations were characterised by TGA, DSC, pXRD, FTIR, pressure-displacement profiles, and in-die Heckel plots. Py was derived from the in-die Heckel analysis and was used as a plasticity parameter. In comparison with non-plasticized MCC ( Py = 136.5 MPa), the plasticity of plasticizer-loaded formulations increased (and Py decreased) from DEC (124.7 MPa) to water (106.6 MPa) and glycerol (99.9 MPa), and that was in full accordance with the predicted miscibility likeliness order based on solubility parameters. Therefore, water and glycerol were able to decrease the Py of non-plasticized MCC spheres by 16.3 and 30.0%, respectively. This feasibility study showed the possibility of modifying the plasticity of MCC by loading it with a specially selected plasticizer.

Lignin utilization in value-added co-products is an important component of enabling cellulosic biorefinery economics. However, aqueous dilute acid pretreatments yield lignins with limited applications due to significant modification during pretreatment, low solubility in many solvents, and high content of impurities (ash, insoluble polysaccharides). This work addresses these challenges and investigates the extraction and recovery of lignins from lignin-rich insoluble residue following dilute acid pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis of corn stover using three extraction approaches: ethanol organosolv, NaOH, and an ionic liquid. The recovered lignins exhibited recovery yields ranging from 30% for the ionic liquid, 44% for the most severe acid ethanol organosolv condition tested, and up to 86% for the most severe NaOH extraction condition. In the field of highway construction, the application of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR)-modified asphalt has gained popularity across different levels of road surfaces. A crucial aspect in ensuring the efficacy of this modification lies in the compatibility between SBR and the matrix asphalt. To address this, the current study utilizes molecular dynamics simulation as a technique. By establishing a model for the SBR-modified asphalt mixture, the research quantifies the compatibility level between the SBR modifier and the asphalt. The aim is to uncover the underlying mechanisms of compatibility between the SBR modifier and the base asphalt, ultimately contributing to the improvement of the storage stability of SBR-modified asphalt, which holds significant importance. The investigation began with the creation of models for both the base asphalt and the SBR modifier. A model for the SBR-modified asphalt blending system was then formulated based on these initial models. After undergoing geometry optimization and annealing procedures, the model attained its lowest energy state, providing a reliable basis for examining the performance of SBR-modified asphalt. The study proceeded to calculate solubility parameters and interaction energies of the system to evaluate the compatibility between the SBR modifier and the base asphalt at various temperatures. The analysis of these parameters shed light on the compatibility mechanism between the two components. Notably, it was found that at a temperature of 160 ℃, the compatibility was significantly enhanced. The findings were further corroborated through scanning electron microscope and rheological tests. The outcomes of this research offer theoretical guidance for the application of SBR-modified asphalt.

Passive all-day radiative cooling (PARC) films with porous structures prepared via nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) have attracted considerable attention owing to their cost-effectiveness and wide applicability. The PARC performances of the films correlate with their porous structures. However, the porous structure formed using the NIPS process cannot be finely regulated. In this study, we prepared polyvinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) films with porous structures optimized by rationally tuning the phase separation, which was achieved by adjusting the proportions of two good solvents with varying solubility parameters. The optimized PVDF-HFP film with a hierarchically porous structure exhibited a high solar reflectance of 97.7% and an infrared emissivity of 96.7%. The film with excellent durability achieved an average subambient cooling temperature of approximately 5.4 °C under a solar irradiance of 945 W·m -2 as well as a temperature of 11.2 °C at nighttime, thus demonstrating all-day radiative cooling. The results indicate that the proposed films present a promising platform for large-scale applications in green building cooling and achieving carbon neutrality.

Herein, a method based on solubility parameter calculation was first used to analyze microplastics in indoor dust. The limit of quantification (LOQ) reached 0.2 mg/g, and the result of reference material SRM 2585 (n = 3) was 14.8 mg/g ± 1.8 %, suggesting satisfying sensitivity and precision. Recoveries of spiking experiments were > 80 % with no obvious matrix interferences observed, except ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) MPs. Further, 69 indoor dust samples were analyzed to verify the method and to assess exposure scenarios for graduate students in Tianjin, China. EPDM was identified in an indoor environment for the first time as the second most widely detected type after PET in this work. The mass-based result is complementary to the outcomes from thermogravimetric analysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and laser direct infrared imaging. Significant correlations were found between total organic carbon (TOC), microplastics, and BDE-209 concentrations, indicating microplastics important contaminant vectors in indoor dust. Dormitory stays and PET contributed the most to health risks among the three exposure scenarios and detected four polymers, respectively. Flavonoids are hydroxylated polyphenols that are widely distributed in plants with diverse health benefits. Despite their popularity, the bioavailability of flavonoids is often overlooked, impacting their efficacy and the comparison of products. The study discusses the bioavailability-related physicochemical properties of flavonoids, with a focus on the poorly soluble compounds commonly found in dietary supplements and herbal products. This review sums up the values of p K a , log P , solubility, permeability, and melting temperature of flavonoids. Experimental and calculated data were compiled for various flavonoid subclasses, revealing variations in their physicochemical properties. The investigation highlights the challenges posed by poorly soluble flavonoids and underscores the need for enabling formulation approaches to enhance their bioavailability and therapeutic potential. Compared to aglycones, flavonoid glycosides (with sugar moieties) tend to be more hydrophilic. Most of the reviewed aglycones and glycosides exhibit relatively low log P and high melting points, making them "brick dust" candidates. To improve solubility and absorption, strategies like size reduction, the potential use of solid dispersions and carriers, as well as lipid-based formulations have been discussed.

The quantitative description of the supramolecular interaction occurring at the adhesion surfaces of different polymers has enabled elaborate dissections of contributions to cohesive and surface energies. An alternative analysis is proposed here based on solubility parameters and binding constants that traditionally describe the weakest and relatively larger association energies in polymer blends. Hypothesis: Capillary suspensions feature networks of particles connected by liquid bridges, which are obtained by adding a small amount of a second immiscible liquid to a suspension. It is possible to link the network formation as well as the rheological behaviour of capillary suspensions to the intermolecular interactions of their constituents., Experiments and Simulations: Through a combination of experimental and numerical methods, we present a novel approach, based on Hansen solubility parameters computed from Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations, to rationalize and predict the rheological behaviour of capillary suspensions. We investigated the formation of capillary suspensions for various combinations of bulk and secondary liquids mixed with hydrophilic silica particles. The predictions were confirmed experimentally by rheological analysis, interfacial tension measurements and microscopy (CLSM) imaging., Findings: Numerical and experimental results show that the Hansen solubility parameters theory allows to predict the formation of capillary suspensions, whose strength exponentially decays with decreasing intermolecular interactions between the secondary liquids and the dispersed particles. High immiscibility between the bulk and secondary liquid strengthens the gel up to a critical immiscibility point, above which the strength of the gel remains mostly affected by the affinity between the secondary liquids and the dispersed particles. Furthermore, we find that hydrogen-bonding and polar interactions control the formation of capillary suspensions. Invisible photonic patterns (IPPs) are photonic materials that can display hidden patterns under external stimulation and are attractive in anti-counterfeiting devices and information storage. In this work, we report a solvent-responsive invisible photonic pattern (SRIPP) with high contrast by polymerizing two monomers of acrylamide (AAm) and poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (PEGMA) with different solubility parameters in different regions of poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) photonic gels. The two regions with different solvent responsiveness can shrink and swell in the same environment, thus causing the colors of different regions of photonic gel to shift in opposite directions from the initial state. As a result, the contrast of photonic patterns is significantly improved, increasing naked-eye visualization. In addition, by introducing fluorescent substances into the photonic gel and adjusting the photonic band gap (PBG) of photonic gels, we realize the regulation of fluorescence emission and display of fluorescence patterns by utilizing different PBGs on the SRIPP. Dynamic solvent responsiveness patterns and fluorescence patterns are integrated into a photonic gel, showing great potential in information storage and multiple-mode anti-counterfeiting applications.

Guest molecular features determining the formation of α and β phases of poly(2-6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene) oxide (PPO) are explored by collecting literature data and adding many new film preparations, both by solution casting and by guest sorption in amorphous films. Independently of the considered preparation method, the α-form is favored by the hydrophobic and bulky guest molecules, while the hydrophilic and small guest molecules favor the β-form. Furthermore, molecular modeling studies indicate that the β-form inducer guests establish stronger dispersive interactions with the PPO units than the α-form inducer guests. Small molecule-chemotherapeutic drug conjugate nanoparticles (SMCDC NPs) has a great advantage in improving drug loading. However, the factors which influence these conjugates forming stable nanoparticles (NPs) are currently unclear. In our previous studies, we synthesized a series of fatty acid-paclitaxel conjugates and suggested that the changes in the hydrophobic parameters (XlogP), solubility parameters and crystallinity of these fatty acid-paclitaxel conjugates were the key factors for affecting these small molecule-chemotherapeutic drug conjugates (SMCDCs) forming stable NPs in water. Here, we selected clinically widely used chemotherapeutic drug (docetaxel (DTX), doxorubicin (DOX) and irinotecan (Ir)) as model drug, and chose three straight-chain fatty acids (acetic acid (Ac), hexanoic acid (HA) and stearic acid (SA)) and one branched small molecule (N-(tert-butoxycarbonyl) glycine (B-G)) to synthesize 12 SMCDCs. Our results indicated that our prediction criterions obtained from paclitaxel conjugates were also appropriated for these synthesized SMCDCs. We suggested that the present studies expanded the scope of application of the above-mentioned influencing factors, provided research ideas for the rational design of SMCDC forming NPs and a basis for screening NPs with good anticancer activity.

The objective of the present investigations was to assess the use of thermodynamic phase diagrams and the Gibbs free energy of mixing, ΔG mix , for the screening of the polymeric carriers by determining the ideal drug-loading for an amorphous solid dispersion formulation and optimum processing temperature for the hot-melt extrusion of a non-glass-forming drug. Mefenamic acid (MFA) was used as a model non-glass-forming drug and four chemically distinct polymers with close values of the solubility parameters, viz. Kollidon® VA64, Soluplus®, Pluronic® F68, and Eudragit® EPO, were used as carriers. The thermodynamic phase diagrams were constructed using the melting point depression data, Flory-Huggins theory, and Gordan-Taylor equation. The Gibbs free energy of mixing was estimated using the values of the drug-polymer interaction parameter, χ, and Flory-Huggins theory. The rank order miscibility of MFA in the four polymeric carriers estimated based on the difference in the values of their solubility parameters, Δδ, did not correlate well with the thermodynamic phase diagrams and Gibbs free energy plots. The study highlights the limitation of using the solubility parameter method in screening the polymeric carriers for poorly glass-forming drugs and reiterates the applicability of thermodynamic phase diagrams and Gibbs free energy plots in determining the ideal drug-loading and optimum processing temperature for hot-melt extrusion., (Copyright © 2021 American Pharmacists Association®. Over the years room temperature ionic liquids have gained attention as solvents with favorable environmental and technical features. Both chromatographic and conventional methods afford suitable tools for the study of their physicochemical properties. Use of gas chromatography compared to conventional methods for the measurement of physicochemical properties of ionic liquids have several advantages; very low sample concentrations, high accuracy, faster measurements, use of wider temperature range and the possibility to determine physicochemical properties of impure samples. Also, general purpose gas chromatography instruments are widely available in most laboratories thus alleviating the need to purchase more specific instruments for less common physiochemical measurements. Here, we systematically interrogate the effects of grafting single-walled (SWNT) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) to polymer matrices by using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We specifically investigate key material properties that include interfacial load transfer, alteration of nanotube properties, and dispersion of nanotubes in the polymer matrix. Simulations are conducted on a periodic unit cell model of the nanocomposite with a straight carbon nanotube and an amorphous polyethylene terephthalate (PET) matrix. For each type of nanotube, either 0%, 1.55%, or 3.1% of the carbon atoms in the outermost nanotubes are covalently grafted onto the carbon atoms of the PET matrix. Stress-strain curves and the elastic moduli of nanotubes and nanocomposites are determined based on the density of covalent grafting. Covalent grafting promotes two rivalling effects with respect to altering nanotube properties, and improvements in interfacial load transfer in the nanocomposites are clearly observed. The enhanced interface enables external loads applied to the nanocomposites to be efficiently transferred to the grafted nanotubes. Covalent functionalization of the nanotube surface with PET molecules can alter the solubility of nanotubes and improve dispersibility. Finally, we discuss the current limitations and challenges in using molecular modelling strategies to accurately predict properties on the nanotube and polymers systems studied here.

The dispersibility of nanoparticles in solvents remains difficult to predict and control. In this paper, the dispersibility of organically-modified nanoparticles in various solvents with different solvent properties and molecular sizes are investigated. The study indicates that solvent molecular size, in addition to the affinity between organic modifier and solvent molecules, affects the dispersibility of the nanoparticles. The experimental results imply that solvents with molecular size small enough can disperse nanoparticles more efficiently. In addition, based on the concept that solvent accommodation induces the enhancement of dispersibility, two approaches to improve nanoparticle dispersibility in desired solvents are proposed. One is the addition of a small amount of solvent with the right size and properties to both penetrate the modifier shell and to act as intermediate between the desired solvent and the organic modifier molecules. The other is dual-molecule modification to create additional space at modifier-shell surface for the penetration of the desired solvent molecules. The extraction of three families of compounds (carotenoids, fatty acids and amphidinols) from the biomass of two strains of Amphidinium carterae (ACRN03 and Dn241EHU) was improved by tuning cell disruption and solvent extraction operations. The extraction of carotenoids was evaluated using alkaline saponification (0%-60% KOH d.w.) at different temperatures (25-80 °C). High levels of carotenoids were obtained at 60 °C using freeze-dried biomass, not subjected to cell disruption methods. The ACRN03 strain required 20% KOH whereas the Dn241EHU strain did not require saponification since carotenoid degradation was observed. The extraction efficiencies were determined with a wide range of pure solvents and mixtures thereof. Two empirical non-linear equations were used to correlate extraction percentages for each family of compounds with the Hildebrand solubility parameter (δ T ) and the polarity index of the solvents (PI). In this work, the ability of several solvents to induce gel formation from amylomaize starch solubilized in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was investigated. The formed gels were subjected to solvent exchange using ethanol and dried with supercritical carbon dioxide (sc-CO 2 ) to obtain the aerogels. The influence of starch concentration (3-15 wt%) and solvent content (20-80 wt%) on gel formation was also studied. It was demonstrated that the gelation of starch in binary mixtures of solvents can be rationalized by Hansen Solubility Parameters (HSP) revealing a crucial hole of hydrogen bonding for the gel's strength, which is in agreement with rheological measurements. Only the addition of water or propylene glycol to starch/DMSO solutions resulted in strong gels at a minimum starch and solvent content of 7.5 wt% and 50 wt%, respectively. The resulting aerogels showed comparably high specific surface areas (78-144 m 2 g -1 ) and low envelope densities (0.097-0.203 g cm -3 ). The results of this work indicate that the HSP parameters could be used as a tool to guide the rational selection of water-free gelation in starch/DMSO systems. In addition, it opens up an attractive opportunity to perform starch gelation in those solvents that are miscible with sc-CO 2 , avoiding the time-consuming step of solvent exchange.

Performing reactions in the presence of self-assembled hierarchical structures of amphiphilic macromolecules can accelerate reactions while using water as the bulk solvent due to the hydrophobic effect. We leveraged non-covalent interactions to self-assemble filled-polymer micelle nanoreactors (NR) incorporating gold nanoparticle catalysts into various amphiphilic polymer nanostructures with comparable hydrodynamic nanoreactor size and gold concentration in the nanoreactor dispersion. We systematically studied the effect of the hydrophobic co-precipitant on self-assembly and catalytic performance. We observed that co-precipitants that interact with gold are beneficial for improving incorporation efficiency of the gold nanoparticles into the nanocomposite nanoreactor during self-assembly but decrease catalytic performance. Hierarchical assemblies with co-precipitants that leverage noncovalent interactions could enhance catalytic performance. For the co-precipitants that do not interact strongly with gold, the catalytic performance was strongly affected by the hydrophobic microenvironment of the co-precipitant. Specifically, the apparent reaction rate per surface area using castor oil (CO) was over 8-fold greater than polystyrene (750 g/mol, PS 750); the turnover frequency was higher than previously reported self-assembled polymer systems. The increase in apparent catalytic performance could be attributed to differences in reactant solubility rather than differences in mass transfer or intrinsic kinetics; higher reactant solubility enhances apparent reaction rates. Full conversion of 4-nitrophenol was achieved within three minutes for at least 10 sequential reactions demonstrating that the nanoreactors could be used for multiple reactions.

The solubility parameters of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was tuned via their chemical modification with pyrrole compounds (PyCs), by means of a simple and sustainable methodology. PyCs were synthesized with high atom efficiency through the Paal-Knorr reaction of primary amines with 2,5-hexanedione, in the absence of solvents and catalysts. Methylamine, 1-dodecylamine, 2-amino-1,3-propanediol, and 3-(triethoxysilyl)propan-1-amine were selected. PyCs are characterized by two moieties, the pyrrole ring and the substituent of the nitrogen atom, and can be considered as Janus molecules. The functionalization of CNTs occurred with a high yield by simply heating CNTs and PyC. The whole reaction pathway did not produce any waste and was characterized by a carbon efficiency up to almost 100%. Thanks to the variety of PyC chemical structures, the CNT solubility parameter was modified in a pretty broad range of values, in the expected direction. Stable CNT dispersions were prepared in different solvents. From the aqueous dispersion, coating layers were prepared with high electrical conductivity, larger with respect to a top commercial product. The "pyrrole methodology" reported here is based on one reaction and allows almost infinite variations of the CNT solubility parameter, thus promoting their compatibility with target matrices and allowing the preparation of nanocomposite materials with improved properties. Pharmaceutical research, whether industrial or academic, has attempted to adopt approaches most efficient for the development of innovations. With the abundance of literature and growth of modern techniques available to minimize the number of trials, research is becoming more systematic by the day. Screening and selection of polymers for a pharmaceutical formulation can be challenging, considering the variety of polymers available and under development. Multiple considerations and experimentations are required to select a polymer to attain the target product profile. In this review, a stepwise discussion of techniques useful to screen and select polymers suitable for hot melt extrusion processing are explored and reported. First of all, selecting a range of polymers available for certain formulation types, for example, immediate release or modified release. Secondly, the screening of these selected polymers based on their physical and chemical properties as these properties should be in line with the active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and the processing limitations of the equipment. Finally, selecting polymers using theoretical models such as solubility parameters and Flory Huggins modeling. The characteristic parameters, surface free energy (γ) and solubility parameters (δ), of Mg 2 AlNO 3 , Mg 3 AlNO 3 , Mg 4 AlNO 3 , Mg 3 AlCl, and Mg 3 AlCO 3 layered double hydroxides (LDHs) were estimated using contact angle and liquid phase exfoliation (LPE) methods. The γ parameters include total (γ s t ), dispersive (γ s d ), and polar (γ s p ) ones. The δ parameters include the Hildebrand parameter (δ t,s ) and the Hansen dispersive (δ d,s ), polar (δ p,s ), and hydrogen-bonding (δ h,s ) ones. Results show that the γ s t , γ s d , and γ s p of the five LDHs are ∼50.9-56.9, 35.2-39.4, and 15.6-18.8 mJ/m 2 , respectively, and the δ t,s , δ d,s , δ p,s and δ h,s of the LDHs except for the Mg 3 AlCO 3 LDH are ∼31.4-32.9, 17.2, 9.5-10.0, and 24.5-26.1 MPa 1/2 , respectively. The compositions of LDHs have no obvious impact on all the characteristic parameters. In comparison with van de Waals attraction-bonded materials, the electrostatic attraction-bonded LDHs exhibit higher γ s t and δ t,s values and, especially, much larger δ h,s values. The characteristic parameter matching principle and the mixed-solvent strategy are suitable for the LPE of LDHs. Non-toxic glycol/PEG200 mixed liquids are found to be a good medium for the direct LPE of LDHs, producing monolayer nanosheets. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the γ and δ parameters of LDHs. The mesmerizing properties of nanomaterials and the features offered by optical fibers can be combined to result in an attractive new platform for chemical sensing. This review (with 230 refs.) summarizes the progress made in the past five years in the field of fiber-optic sensors: The first group comprises metals and metal oxides and their composites, and the second group comprises graphene, graphene oxides and CNTs, and its composites. By combining these nanocomposites with various optical fiber geometries, numerous sensors have been realized. Following an introduction, first section summarizes fiber-optic configuration for chemical sensing (including Fabry-Perot and Mach-Zehnder interferometry, surface plasmon resonance, and optical fiber gratings of the FBG and LPG type). The second section covers typical nanomaterials used in such sensors, with a first subsection on metals, metal oxides, their composites and nanostructured modifications, and a second subsection on graphenes, graphene oxides, carbon nanotubes, and their derivatives. Section 3 summarizes sensors (i) for various gaseous species (NH 3 , H 2 , CH 4 , H 2 S, CO 2 , NO 2 , O 2 ), (ii) for volatile organic compounds (such as ethanol, methanol, acetone, toluene, and formaldehyde), and (iii) for heavy metal ions (such as Hg 2+ , Pb 2+ , Mg 2+ , Cd 2+ , Ni 2+ , and Mn 2+ ). The merits and limitations of these nanomaterials and numerous examples for nanomaterial-based sensors are discussed and presented in the form of tables. A concluding section addresses technological challenges and future trends. The objective of this study was to assess worker exposure to mineral dust particles, and a metabolic model, based on the model adopted by ICRP, was applied to assess human exposure to Ta, and predicted values of Ta concentrations in excreta. The occupational exposure to Th, U, Nb, and Ta-bearing particles during routine tasks to obtain Fe-Nb alloys was estimated using air samplers and excreta samples. Ta concentrations in food samples and in drinking water were also determined. The results support that workers were occupationally exposed to Ta-bearing particles, and also indicate that a source of Ta exposure for both workers and the control group was the ingestion of drinking water containing soluble compounds of Ta. Therefore, some Ta compounds should be considered soluble compounds in gastrointestinal tract. Consequently, the metabolic model based on ICRP metabolic model and/or the transfer factor f 1 for Ta should be reviewed and the solubility of Ta compounds in gastrointestinal should be determined.

Lipid-based drug delivery systems have been intensively investigated as a means of delivering poorly water-soluble drugs. Upon ingestion, the lipases in the gastrointestinal tract digest lipid ingredients, mainly triglycerides, within the formulation into monoglycerides and fatty acids. While numerous studies have addressed the solubility of drugs in triglycerides, comparatively few publications have addressed the solubility of drugs in fatty acids, which are the end product of digestion and responsible for the solubility of drug within mixed micelles. The objective of this investigation was to explore the solubility of a poorly water-soluble drug in fatty acids and raise the awareness of the importance of drug solubility in fatty acids. The model API (active pharmaceutical ingredient), a weak acid, is considered a BCS II compound with an aqueous solubility of 0.02 μg/mL and predicted partition coefficient >7. The solubility of API ranged from 120 mg/mL to over 1 g/mL in fatty acids with chain lengths across the range C18 to C6. Hydrogen bonding was found to be the main driver of the solubilization of API in fatty acids. The solubility of API was significantly reduced by water uptake in caprylic acid but not in oleic acid. This report demonstrates that solubility data generated in fatty acids can provide an indication of the solubility of the drug after lipid digestion. This report also highlights the importance of measuring the solubility of drugs in fatty acids in the course of lipid formulation development.

Although carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have outstanding physical properties, there are still challenging issues such as poor dispersibility and miscibility between organic polymers and CNTs for polymer nanocomposites. Chemical modifications (e.g., strong acid based oxidation, carboxylation, etc.) can improve dispersion properties and compatibility, but such surface modification methods often lead to damage to the pristine CNT structure and also deteriorate the mechanical properties of CNTs. Here we demonstrate a simple, defect-free and scalable method for well-dispersed CNTs in common organic solvents, using dopamine and amine-terminated polyethylene glycol derivatives. This method makes it possible to prepare solubility-tunable CNTs without any severe structural deformation. As-modified CNTs were successfully characterized by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscope (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The surface modified-CNTs were well-dispersed in polar and/or non-polar common solvents. The well-dispersed CNTs can be used in a nanofiller in commercial polymers such as thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) polymer. The objective of the study was to select solid-state plasticizers for hot-melt extrusion (HME) process. The physical and mechanical properties of plasticizers, in selected binary (polymer:plasticizer) and ternary (active pharmaceutical ingredient:polymer:plasticizer) systems, were evaluated to assess their effectiveness as processing aids for HME process. Indomethacin and Eudragit ® E PO were selected as model active pharmaceutical ingredient and polymer, respectively. Solubility parameters, thermal analysis, and rheological evaluation were used as assessment tools. Based on comparable solubility parameters, stearic acid, glyceryl behenate, and polyethylene glycol 8000 were selected as solid-state plasticizers. Binary and ternary physical mixtures were evaluated as a function of plasticizer concentration for thermal and rheological behavior. The thermal and rheological assessments also confirmed the miscibility predictions from solubility parameters. The understanding of thermal and rheological properties of the various mixtures helped in predicating plasticization efficiency of stearic acid, glyceryl behenate, and polyethylene glycol 8000. The evaluation also provided insight into the properties of the final product. An empirical model was also developed correlating rheological property of physical mixtures to actual HME process. Debundling and dispersion of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in polymer solutions play a major role in the preparation of carbon nanofibers due to early effects on interfacial ordering and mechanical properties. A roadblock toward ultrastrong fibers is the difficulty to achieve homogeneous dispersions of CNTs in polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) precursor solutions in solvents such as dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc), and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF). In this contribution, molecular dynamics simulations with accurate interatomic potentials for graphitic materials that include virtual π electrons are reported to analyze the interaction of pristine single wall CNTs with the solvents and polymer solutions at 25 °C. The results explain the barriers toward dispersion of SWCNTs and quantify CNT-solvent, polymer-solvent, as well as CNT-polymer interactions in atomic detail. Debundling of CNTs is overall endothermic and unfavorable with dispersion energies of +20 to +30 mJ/m 2 in the pure solvents, + 20 to +40 mJ/m 2 in PAN solutions, and +20 to +60 mJ/m 2 in PMMA solutions. Differences arise due to molecular geometry, polar, van der Waals, and CH-π interactions. Among the pure solvents, DMF restricts CNT dispersion less due to the planar geometry and stronger van der Waals interactions. PAN and PMMA interact favorably with the pure solvents with dissolution energies of -0.7 to -1.1 kcal per mole monomer and -1.5 to -2.2 kcal per mole monomer, respectively. Adsorption of PMMA onto CNTs is stronger than that of PAN in all solvents as the molecular geometry enables more van der Waals contacts between alkyl groups and the CNT surface. Polar side groups in both polymers prefer interactions with the polar solvents. Higher polymer concentrations in solution lead to polymer aggregation via alkyl groups and reduce adsorption onto CNTs. PAN and PMMA solutions in DMSO and dilute solutions in DMF support CNT dispersion more than other combinations whereby the polymers significantly adsorb onto CNTs in DMSO solution. The observations by molecular simulations are consistent with available experimental data and solubility parameters and aid in the design of carbon nanofibers. The methods can be applied to other multiphase graphitic materials.

The Hansen solubility parameter approach is revisited by implementing the thermodynamics of dissolution and mixing. Hansen's pragmatic approach has earned its spurs in predicting solvents for polymer solutions, but for molecular solutes improvements are needed. By going into the details of entropy and enthalpy, several corrections are suggested that make the methodology thermodynamically sound without losing its ease of use. The most important corrections include accounting for the solvent molecules' size, the destruction of the solid's crystal structure, and the specificity of hydrogen-bonding interactions, as well as opportunities to predict the solubility at extrapolated temperatures. Testing the original and the improved methods on a large industrial dataset including solvent blends, fit qualities improved from 0.89 to 0.97 and the percentage of correct predictions rose from 54 % to 78 %. Purpose: Aim was to formulate oil-in-water (O/W) microemulsion with a high volume ratio of complex natural oil, i.e. copaiba oil and low surfactant content. The strategy of formulation was based on (i) the selection of surfactants based on predictive calculations of chemical compatibility between their hydrophobic moiety and oil components and (ii) matching the HLB of the surfactants with the required HLB of the oil., Method: Solubility parameters of the hydrophobic moiety of the surfactants and of the main components found in the oil were calculated and compared. In turn, required HLB of oils were calculated. Selection of surfactants was achieved matching their solubility parameters with those of oil components. Blends of surfactants were prepared with HLB matching the required HLB of the oils. Oil:water mixtures (15:85 and 25:75) were the titrated with surfactant blends until a microemulsion was formed., Results: Two surfactant blends were identified from the predictive calculation approach. Microemulsions containing up to 19.6% and 13.7% of selected surfactant blends were obtained., Conclusion: O/W microemulsions with a high volume fraction of complex natural oil and a reasonable surfactant concentration were formulated. These microemulsions can be proposed as delivery systems for the oral administration of poorly soluble drugs.

The solubility parameter seems to be a useful tool for thermodynamic characterisation of different materials. The solubility parameter concept can be used to predict sufficient miscibility or solubility between a solvent and a polymer, as well as components of co-polymer matrix in composite biomaterials. The values of solubility parameter were determined for polycaprolactone (PCL), polylactic acid (PLA) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) by using different procedures and experimental data, collected by means of inverse gas chromatography., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier B.V. We hypothesised that Hansen Solubility Parameters (HSPs) can be used to predict drug-nail affinities. Our aims were to: (i) determine the HSPs (δD, δP, δH) of the nail plate, the hoof membrane (a model for the nail plate), and of the drugs terbinafine HCl, amorolfine HCl, ciclopirox olamine and efinaconazole, by measuring their swelling/solubility in organic liquids, (ii) predict nail-drug interactions by comparing drug and nail HSPs, and (iii) evaluate the accuracy of these predictions using literature reports of experimentally-determined affinities of these drugs for keratin, the main constituent of the nail plate and hoof. Many solvents caused no change in the mass of nail plates, a few solvents deswelled the nail, while others swelled the nail to varying extents. Fingernail and toenail HSPs were almost the same, while hoof HSPs were similar, except for a slightly lower δP. High nail-terbinafine HCl, nail-amorolfine HCl and nail-ciclopirox olamine affinities, and low nail-efinaconazole affinities were then predicted, and found to accurately match experimental reports of these drugs' affinities to keratin. We therefore propose that drug and nail Hansen Solubility Parameters may be used to predict drug-nail interactions, and that these results can assist in the design of drugs for the treatment of nail diseases, such as onychomycosis and psoriasis. Purpose: The direct impact of intermolecular attraction between ibuprofen and chitosan on crystal behaviour, saturated solubility and dissolution efficiency of ibuprofen was investigated in order to expand the drug delivery strategy for ibuprofen., Methods: Amorphous nanoparticle complex (nanoplex) was prepared by controlled drug-polymer nanoassembly. Intermolecular attraction was confirmed with surface tension, conductivity measurements and FTIR spectroscopy. The nanoplex was characterized using DSC, TGA and SEM. The in vitro release kinetics and mechanism of drug release were evaluated using mathematical models., Results: The cmc of ibuprofen decreased significantly in the nanoplex (1.85 mM) compared with pure ibuprofen (177.62 mM) suggesting a remarkable affinity between the chitosan and ibuprofen. The disappearance of ibuprofen melting peak in the nanoplex and the broadened DSC endothermic peaks of the nanoplex indicate formation of eutectic amorphous product which corresponded to higher saturated solubility and dissolution velocity. Ibuprofen (aspect ratio 5.16 ± 1.15) was converted into spherical nanoparticle complex with particle size of 14.96 ± 1.162-143.17 ± 17.5247 nm (36-345 folds reduction) dictated by chitosan concentration. Pure ibuprofen exhibited burst release while the nanoplexes showed both fast and extended release profiles. DE increased to a maximum (81.76 ± 2.1031%) with chitosan concentrations at 3.28 × 10-3 g/dm3, beyond which retardation occurred steadily. Major mechanism of drug release from the nanoplex was by diffusion however anomalous transport and super case II transport did occur., Conclusion: Ibuprofen-chitosan nanoplex exhibited combined fast and extended release profile dictated by chitosan concentration. This study demonstrated the potential application of drug-polymer nanoconjugate design in multifunctional regulated drug delivery.

Aerogels are three-dimensional ultra-light porous structures whose characteristics make them exciting candidates for research, development and commercialization leading to a broad scope of applications ranging from insulation and catalysis to regenerative medicine and pharmaceuticals. Biopolymers have recently entered the aerogel foray. In order to fully realize their potential, progressive strategies dealing with production times and costs reduction must be put in place to facilitate the scale up of aerogel production from lab to commercial scale. The necessity of studying solvent/matrix interactions during solvent exchange and supercritical CO₂ drying is presented in this study using calcium alginate as a model system. Four frameworks, namely (a) solvent selection methodology based on solvent/polymer interaction; (b) concentration gradient influence during solvent exchange; (c) solvent exchange kinetics based on pseudo second order model; and (d) minimum solvent concentration requirements for supercritical CO₂ drying, are suggested that could help assess the role of the solvent in biopolymer aerogel production.

Amorphous drug-polymer systems or amorphous solid dispersions are commonly used in pharmaceutical industry to enhance the solubility of compounds with poor aqueous solubility. The degree of miscibility between drug and polymer is important both for solubility enhancement as well as for the formation of a physically stable amorphous system. Calculation of solubility parameters, Computational data mining, Tg measurements by DSC and Raman mapping are established traditional methods used to qualitatively detect the drug-polymer miscibility. Calculation of Flory-Huggins interaction parameter, computational analysis of X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) data, solid state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and Atomic Forced Microscopy (AFM) have been recently developed to quantitatively determine the miscibility in amorphous drug-polymer systems. This brief review introduces and compiles these qualitative and quantitative methods employed in the evaluation of drug-polymer miscibility. Novel bio-based polyurethane (PU) nanocomposites composed of cellulose nanofiller extracted from the rachis of date palm tree and polycaprolactone (PCL) diol based PU were prepared by casting/evaporation. Two types of nanofiber were used: cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). The mechanical and thermal properties of the nanocomposite films were studied by DMA, DSC, and tensile tests and the morphology was investigated by SEM. Bionanocomposites presented good mechanical properties in comparison to neat PU. While comparing both nanofillers, the improvement in mechanical and thermal properties was more pronounced for the nanocomposites based on CNF which could be explained, not only by the higher aspect ratio of CNF, but also by their better dispersion in the PU matrix. Calculation of the solubility parameters of the nanofiller surface polymers and of the PU segments portend a better interfacial adhesion for CNF based nanocomposites compared to CNC., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. The aim of the research was to investigate three "critical steps" that deserve particular attention during the mechanochemical activation of vincamine. The first step consisted in the selection of the best polymeric carrier/most affine stabiliser between linear PVP and NaCMC by using the GRID and the GRID based AutoDock software packages which permit to calculate their surface features and interactions. Moreover, the calculation of the partial and total solubility parameters supported the results obtained by GRID and AutoDock software. Then, after the selection of linear PVP-K30 as the suitable carrier, the influence of process and formulation variables on the amorphisation degree and solubility enhancement was studied, to select the most suitable process conditions and formulation parameters. Subsequently, the best performing samples were widely characterised using XRPD, TEM and SSNMR (including the proton relaxation ((1)H T1 NMR) time) techniques. These studies highlighted that all the coground samples were nanocrystalline solid dispersions indicating a dramatic difference between the amorphisation capacities of linear PVP-K30 and cross-linked PVP, used in previous analogous experiences. In particular, (13)C, (15)N and (1)H T1 NMR data point to a description of the system as a dispersion of nanocrystals in the polymer. In these dispersions vincamine is in a disordered crystalline state due to extensive interactions and contacts with PVP-K30 but the main hydrogen bonding motif characterising its packing remains. Again, differently from cross-linked PVP, dissolution studies revealed that linear PVP-K30 was able to promote a complete in vitro solubilisation of vincamine in some coground samples. What is more important, by using a linear polymer, drug-to-polymer and milling time variables appeared less influent on the solid state and in vitro properties of the composites. The aqueous solubility of 14 organic solutes has been calculated from their octanol/water partition coefficient and from their solute activity coefficient in octanol at infinite dilution. The solute activity coefficients were calculated from the Flory-Huggins and Hildebrand-Scatchard (FH-HS) equations and were found to be in good agreement with the activity coefficients determined from GC specific retention volume measurements. The calculated solubilities were in good agreement with the experimental solubilities.
