Haptophyta represents a major taxonomic group, with plastids derived from the primary plastids of red algae. Here, we elucidated the cryoelectron microscopy structure of the photosystem I-light-harvesting complex I (PSI-LHCI) supercomplex from the haptophyte Isochrysis galbana . The PSI core comprises 12 subunits, which have evolved differently from red algae and cryptophytes by losing the PsaO subunit while incorporating the PsaK subunit, which is absent in diatoms and dinoflagellates. The PSI core is encircled by 22 fucoxanthin-chlorophyll a / c -binding light-harvesting antenna proteins (iFCPIs) that form a trilayered antenna arrangement. Moreover, a pigment-binding subunit, L iFP , which has not been identified in any other previously characterized PSI-LHCI supercomplexes, was determined in I. galbana PSI-iFCPI, presumably facilitating the interactions and energy transfer between peripheral iFCPIs and the PSI core. Calculation of excitation energy transfer rates by computational simulations revealed that the intricate pigment network formed within PSI-iFCPI ensures efficient transfer of excitation energy. Overall, our study provides a solid structural foundation for understanding the light-harvesting and energy transfer mechanisms in haptophyte PSI-iFCPI and provides insights into the evolution and structural variations of red-lineage PSI-LHCIs., Competing Interests: Competing interests statement:The authors declare no competing interest.

The electrochemical conversion of CO 2 into CO represents a promising strategy for mitigating excessive global greenhouse gas emissions. Nevertheless, achieving industrial-scale electrochemical CO 2 -to-CO conversion with enhanced selectivity and reduced energy consumption presents significant challenges. In this study, a borate-enhanced molten salt process for CO 2 capture and electrochemical transformation is employed, achieving over 98% selectivity for CO and over 55% energy efficiency without the necessity for complex and costly electrocatalysts. Cathodic CO 2 electro-reduction (CO 2 ER) with the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at an overall current density of 500 mA cm -2 using non-nanostructured transition-metal plate electrodes at 650 °C is coupled. By regulating the electrolyte's oxo-basicity with earth-abundant borax (Na 2 B 4 O 7 ), a borate-enhanced electrolyte is established that accelerates the overall electrochemical reaction efficiently. This system involved a series of well-designed target borate species (BO 3 3- , BO 2 - , and B 4 O 7 2- ) that acted as mediators shuttling between the cathode and anode, favoring CO as the primary cathodic product. Manipulating the atmosphere above the anode facilitated a spontaneous transformation of borates, further enhancing OER performance with long-term operational stability over a cumulative period of 50 h, while also reducing overall energy consumption. Cartilage repair remains a significant challenge in tissue engineering. The Sodium alginate/Chitosan hydrogel scaffold, fabricated from natural polymers, has the potential to promote tissue regeneration. However, its poor mechanical performance limits its application. Research has shown that integrating nanomaterials into three-dimensional network materials can significantly enhance mechanical properties, which is particularly important for osteochondral replacement scaffolds. In this study, biodegradable polylactic acid-glycolic acid copolymer/polycaprolactone/gelatin (PLGA/PCL/GEL) nanofibers were prepared via electrospinning and integrated as a reinforcing phase. This enhancement significantly improved the mechanical performance of the sodium alginate/chitosan hydrogel, achieving a maximum compressive modulus of 665 kPa and compressive stress of 342 kPa. Moreover, the inherent biocompatibility of the composite scaffold remained high. This investigation presents the synthesis of butyl-decorated calix[ n ]phenoxazines of varying sizes by kinetic control and the ring-expansion of calix[3]phenoxazine, which uniquely exhibits distinct binding affinities for fullerenes C 60 and C 70 . Calix[3]phenoxazine demonstrates a higher binding affinity for cationic ammonium, which can be reversibly deprotonated and protonated, enabling the reversible release and reloading of fullerenes. This system holds potential for applications in fullerene extraction and separation.

Controlling the microenvironment surrounding the pluripotent stem cells (PSCs) is a pivotal strategy for regulating cellular differentiation. Surface nanotopography is one of the key factors influencing the lineage-specific differentiation of PSCs. However, much of the underlying mechanism remains unknown. In this study, we focused on the effects of gradient nanotopography on the differentiation of embryoid bodies (EBs). EBs were cultured on three differently sized nanopillar surfaces (Large, 280-360; Medium, 200-280; Small, 120-200 nm) for spontaneous cardiomyocyte differentiation without chemical stimuli. The large nanotopography significantly promoted cardiogenesis, with increased expression of cardiac markers such as α-MHC, cTnT, and cTnI, and redistributed vinculin expression to the contact area. In addition, the small and medium nanotopographies also influenced EB differentiation, affecting both cardiogenesis and hematopoiesis to varying degrees. The phosphorylation of focal adhesion kinase (FAK) decreased in the EBs on the large nanotopography compared to that in the EBs cultured on the flat surface. The gradient nanotopography with 280-360 nm nanopillars is beneficial for the cardiogenesis of EBs in a FAK-dependent manner. The electronic structure of the strongly correlated electron system plutonium hexaboride is studied by using single-particle approximations and a many-body approach. Imaginary components of impurity Green's functions show that 5f j=5/2 and 5f j=7/2 manifolds are in conducting and insulating regimes, respectively. Quasi-particle weights and their ratio suggest that the intermediate coupling mechanism is applicable for Pu 5f electrons, and PuB 6 might be in the orbital-selective localized state. The weighted summation of occupation probabilities yields the interconfiguration fluctuation and average occupation number of 5f electrons n 5f  ~ 5.101. The interplay of 5f-5f correlation, spin-orbit coupling, Hund's exchange interaction, many-body transition of 5f configurations, and final state effects might be responsible for the quasiparticle multiplets in electronic spectrum functions. Prominent characters in the density of state, such as the coexistence of atomic multiplet peaks in the vicinity of the Fermi level and broad Hubbard bands in the high-lying regime, suggest that PuB 6 could be identified as a Racah material. One new cyclic heptapeptide, cadophorin C ( 1 ), and one known analogue cadophorin B ( 2 ) were isolated from the mangrove-derived fungus Penicillium sp. GXIMD 03101 from the mangrove Acanthus ilicifolius  L. The chemical structure of 1 was elucidated by comprehensive analysis of the spectroscopic data, including 1D and 2D NMR and HRESIMS, and the known compound was identified by comparing the data with literature values. Compounds 1 and 2 were screened for antibacterial activity and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) inhibitory activity. The results showed that compounds 1 and 2 have weak activity against Vibrio harveyi with MIC values of 3.12 and 12.5 μg/mL, respectively. Compounds 1 and 2 have significant inhibitory activity against BPH with IC 50 values of 2.62 and 2.23 μM, respectively.

Background: Glibenclamide has garnered attention due to its multifaceted neuroprotective effects in cases of acute central nervous system injury. We initiated a trial to explore the effectiveness and safety of a high dose of glibenclamide in the management of cerebral oedema following aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage (aSAH)., Methods: This trial constituted a single-centre, randomised clinical study. Half of the 56 patients assigned to the glibenclamide group received 15 mg of glibenclamide tablets daily for 10 days (5 mg, three times/day). The primary outcome was the proportion of patients achieving the subarachnoid haemorrhage early brain oedema score dichotomy (defined as Subarachnoid Haemorrhage Early Brain Oedema Score 0-2) at the 10-day postmedication. The secondary outcome of cerebral oedema was the concentration of sulfonylurea receptor 1-transient receptor potential melastatin 4 (SUR1-TRPM4) in the plasma and cerebrospinal fluid., Results: We enrolled 56 patients diagnosed with aSAH, who were admitted to the neurosurgery intensive care unit between 22 August 2021 and 25 April 2023. The primary outcome revealed that the glibenclamide group exhibited a notably higher proportion of mild cerebral oedema in comparison to the placebo group (60.7% vs 42.9%, adjusted OR: 4.66, 95% CI 1.14 to 19.10, p=0.032). Furthermore, the concentration of SUR1-TRPM4 in the cerebrospinal fluid of the glibenclamide group was significantly higher than the placebo group (p=0.0002; p=0.026), while the plasma TRPM4 concentration in the glibenclamide group was significantly lower than the placebo group (p=0.001)., Conclusion: Oral administration of high-dose glibenclamide notably reduced radiological assessment of cerebral oedema after 10 days of medication. Significant alterations were also observed in the concentration of SUR1-TRPM4 in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid. However, it is worth noting that glibenclamide was associated with a higher incidence of hypoglycaemia. This study aims to investigate the effects of the typical glycation intermediate methylglyoxal (MGO) on the structure and allergenicity of milk β-lactoglobulin (βLG) during thermal processing. Structural changes were assessed using SDS-PAGE, intrinsic fluorescence, circular dichroism, and HPLC-MS/MS. Allergenicity was evaluated through in vitro and in vivo experiments. The conformational changes of βLG significantly were induced by MGO during heat treatment, with a 41.3% decrease in α-helix content and a 25.4% increase in random structure. Furthermore, the lysine, arginine, aspartic acid, and histidine residues in βLG were modified by MGO, which may disrupt or mask allergenic epitopes. Additionally, MGO treatment resulted in a reduction of 41.1% and 26.8% in the pro-inflammatory mediators histamine and β-hexosaminidase in KU812 cells, respectively. Additionally, cytokine levels of IL-4 and IL-13 were reduced by 26.3% and 21.75%, respectively. In mouse experiments, compared to the βLG group, the MGO-βLG group showed a 2-4 fold decrease in IgE, IgG, and IgG1 levels. After reacting with βLG, MGO can reduce serum histamine release by up to 73.9% and mast cell protease-1 (MCP-1) release by 40.8%. These results indicate that the typical glycation intermediate MGO can modify the allergenic epitopes of milk βLG during thermal processing, thereby affecting its allergenicity. Spiradiclisyanii Y.Nong & L.Wu (Rubiaceae), a new species from Guangxi, China, is described and illustrated. This new species is most similar to S.tomentosa , but it can be easily distinguished by being densely multicellular villous, leaves narrow elliptic or oblanceolate, apex acute or shortly acuminate, stipules 2-4, linear or linear lanceolate, 4-8 mm, densely villous, corolla tube 3 mm, sparsely pubescent inside, flower homomorphism, lobes 3-5, stamens arising at the base of the tube, stigma 2-lobed, lobes ovoid, slightly swollen, 0.2 mm. The habitat of Spiradiclisyanii is extremely fragile. Background: Preeclampsia (PE) has culminated in maternal and perinatal sickness and death across the world, affecting approximately 4.6% of pregnancies. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) have been linked to the biology of numerous pathologies, including PE. Here, we investigated the functional role of circPCNXL2 in the progression of PE., Methods: We employed the GEO database to get the expression profile of circPCNXL2 in patients with PE. This was followed by the detection of the expression of circPCNXL2 and miR-326 by qRT-PCR. The role of circPCNXL2 on trophoblast cell proliferation, migration, and invasion was confirmed with cell viability assays, the transwell assay, and the colony formation assay. Further, we employed dual luciferase, FISH, RNA pull-down assay and Western blot analysis to determine the interaction between the expression of circPCNXL2, miR-487a-3p, and IRF2., Result: Findings from this study revealed that proliferation and migration of trophoblast cells were significantly increased in the HTR-8/SVneo cells after silencing circPCNXL2. Additionally, knockdown of circPCNXL2 remarkably increased miR-487a-3p expression, while IRF2 expression was remarkably reduced ( P  < 0.05), indicating the presence of complementary binding sequence on miR-487a-3p with which they sequester circPCNXL2. Rescue experiments revealed that interaction occurs between circPCNXL2, miR-487a-3p, and the IRF2 protein, indicating that circPCNXL2 expression elicits suppression of migration and proliferation of trophoblast cells via the miR-487a-3p/IRF2 pathway., Conclusions: We demonstrated that circPCNXL2 upregulation promotes pre-eclampsia by inhibiting proliferation and migration of trophoblast cells via the miR-487a-3p/IRF2 pathway or axis., (Copyright © 2024 The Author(s). The utilization of biomass-assisted pyrolysis in the recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries has emerged as a promising and reliable process. This article furnishes theoretical underpinnings and analytical insights into this method, showcasing sawdust pyrolysis reduction as an efficient means to recycle spent LiMn 2 O 4 and LiNi 0.6 Co 0.2 Mn 0.2 O 2 batteries. Through advanced thermogravimetry-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis complemented by traditional thermodynamic demonstration, the synergistic effects of biomass pyrolysis reduction are elucidated, with minor autodecomposition and major carbothermal and gasthermal reduction pathways identified. The controlled manipulation of transition metals has demonstrated the capability to modulate surface pyrolysis gas catalytic reactions and facilitate the preparation of composite materials with diverse morphologies. Optimization of process conditions has culminated in recovery efficiency exceeding 99.0 % for LiMn 2 O 4 and 99.5 % for LiNi 0.6 Co 0.2 Mn 0.2 O 2 . We propose coupling electrochemical leaching with solvent extraction to separate and recover Li and Co from spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Electrochemical leaching occurs in the aqueous electrolyte for converting solid LiCoO 2 into soluble Li + and Co 2+ , in which electrons act as reductants to reduce Co(III) to Co(II). Simultaneously, solvent extraction occurs at the interface of aqueous and organic phases to separate Co 2+ and Li + . By capturing and utilizing the protons from P507, leaching yields for both Co and Li exceed ∼7 times than acid leaching without solvent extraction. The extraction efficiency of Co 2+ reaches 86% at 60 °C, 3.5 V, while simultaneously retaining the majority of Li + in the H 2 SO 4 solution. The total leaching amount was improved because the organic phase provides protons to help the leaching of Co 2+ , and the continuous extraction process of Co(II) maintains the low Co 2+ concentration in the aqueous solution. The synergistic interaction between electrochemical leaching and solvent extraction processes significantly reduces the consumption of chemicals, enhances the utilization efficiency of protons, and simplifies the recovery process. The leaching kinetics of Li and Co both conforms well to the residue layer diffusion control model and the activation energy ( E a ) values of the leaching for Li and Co are 4.03 and 7.80 kJ/mol, respectively. Lastly, the economic and environmental assessment of this process also demonstrates the advantages of this method in reducing inputs, lowering environmental pollution, and enhancing economic benefits.

Digital twin represents the core technology to realize the dynamic monitoring of complex industrial systems. However, the human body, as the most complex system in the physical world, digital twin is rarely applied in it. In this study, we successfully demonstrated a digital twin in the human biomedical application by proposing a dynamic monitoring system of the upper limb force. In this system, the real upper limb drives the motion of the virtual one in real-time and dynamically updates the force. Meanwhile, the virtual upper limb feeds back the monitoring-results of the force to the controller of the real upper limb via immersive virtual reality interaction. Experimental results of the typical motions of the upper limb revealed that the proposed system functioned interactively in real-time in a non-invasive manner, while ensuring the accurate solving of the muscle force. In conclusion, our digital twin-driven system is of great importance for rehabilitation medicine, biomechanical scientific research and physical training, promoting the application of the digital twin in the human biomedical field.

The disposal and management of waste lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) plastics pose significant environmental challenges. Here we show a synergistic pyrolysis approach that employs spent lithium transition metal oxides and waste LDPE plastics in one sealed reactor to achieve the separation of Li and transition metal. Additionally, we demonstrate the preparation of nanoscale NiCo alloy@carbon nanotubes (CNTs) through co-pyrolysis of LiNi 0.6 Co 0.2 Mn 0.2 O 2 and LDPE. The NiCo alloy@CNTs exhibits excellent catalytic activity (E onset  = ~0.85 V) and the selectivity (~90%) for H 2 O 2 production through the electrochemical reduction of oxygen. This can be attributed to the NiCo nanoalloy core and the presence of CNTs with abundant oxygen-containing functional groups (e.g., -COOH and C-O-C), as confirmed by density function theory calculations. Glioma, a malignant and infiltrative neoplasm of the central nervous system, poses a significant threat due to its high mortality rates. Branched-chain amino acid transaminase 1 (BCAT1), a key enzyme in branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) catabolism, exhibits elevated expression in gliomas and correlates strongly with poor prognosis. Nonetheless, the regulatory mechanisms underlying this increased BCAT1 expression remains incompletely understood. In this study, we reveal that ubiquitination at Lys360 facilitates BCAT1 degradation, with low ubiquitination levels contributing to high BCAT1 expression in glioma cells. The Carboxyl terminus of Hsc70-interacting protein (CHIP), an E3 ubiquitin ligase, interacts with BCAT1 via its coiled-coil (CC) domain, promoting its K48-linkage ubiquitin degradation through proteasomal pathway. Moreover, CHIP-mediated BCAT1 degradation induces metabolic reprogramming, and impedes glioma cell proliferation and tumor growth both in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, a positive correlation is observed between low CHIP expression, elevated BCAT1 levels, and unfavorable prognosis among glioma patients. Additionally, we show that the CHIP/BCAT1 axis enhances glioma sensitivity to temozolomide by reducing glutathione (GSH) synthesis and increasing oxidative stress. These findings underscore the critical role of CHIP/BCAT1 axis in glioma cell proliferation and temozolomide sensitivity, highlighting its potential as a diagnostic marker and therapeutic target in glioma treatment., (© 2024. Constructing heterostructures from already synthesized two-dimensional materials is of significant importance. We performed a first-principles study to investigate the electronic properties and interfacial characteristics of Janus MoSH/WSi 2 N 4 van der Waals heterostructure (vdWH) contacts. We demonstrate that the p-type Schottky formed by MoSH/WSi 2 N 4 and MoHS/WSi 2 N 4 has extremely low Schottky barrier heights (SBHs). Due to its excellent charge injection efficiency, Janus MoSH may be regarded as an effective metal contact for WSi 2 N 4 semiconductors. Furthermore, the interfacial characteristics and electronic structure of Janus MoSH/WSi 2 N 4 vdWHs can not only reduce/eliminate SBH, but also forms the transition from p-ShC to n-ShC type and from Schottky contact (ShC) to Ohmic contact (OhC) through the layer spacing and electric field. Our results can offer a fresh method for optoelectronic applications based on metal/semiconductor Janus MoSH/WSi 2 N 4 vdW heterostructures, which have strong potential in optoelectronic applications.

Mohr-Coulomb (MC) strength criterion has been widely used in many classical analytical expressions and numerical modeling due to its simple physical calculation, but the MC criterion is not suitable for describing the failure envelope of rock masses. In order to directly apply MC parameters to analytical expressions or numerical modeling in rock slope stability analysis, scholars established a criterion for converting Hoek-Brown (HB) parameters to equivalent MC parameters. However, the consistency of HB parameters and equivalent MC parameters in calculating critical acceleration of slope needs to be further explored and confirmed. Therefore, HB parameters are converted into equivalent MC parameters by considering the influence of slope angle (1# case and 2# case when slope angle is not considered and slope angle is considered respectively). Then, the lower-bound of finite element limit analysis is used for numerical modeling, and the results of calculating critical acceleration using HB parameters and equivalent MC parameters are compared, and the influence of related parameters on the calculation of critical acceleration is studied. Finally, the influence of different critical accelerations on the calculation of slope permanent displacement is further analyzed through numerical cases and engineering examples. The results show that: (1) In the 1# case, the critical acceleration obtained by the equivalent MC parameters are significantly larger than that obtained by the 2 #case and the HB parameters, and this difference becomes more obvious with the increase of slope angle. The critical acceleration obtained by the 2# case is very close to the HB parameters; (2) In the 1# case, slope height is inversely proportional to ΔAc (HB (Ac)  - 1# (Ac) ), and with the increase of slope height, ΔAc decreases, while in the 2# case, the difference of ΔAc (HB (Ac)  - 2# (Ac) ) is not significant; (3) In the 1# case, the sensitivity of the HB parameters to ΔAc is D > GSI > m i  > σ ci , but in the 2# case, there is no sensitivity-related regularity; (4) The application of HB parameters and equivalent MC parameters in slope permanent displacement is studied through numerical cases and engineering examples, and the limitations of equivalent MC parameters in rock slope stability evaluation are revealed., (© 2024. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of vision loss among the elderly, which is primarily attributed to oxidative stress-induced damage to the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). Human amniotic mesenchymal stem cells (hAMSC) were considered to be one of the most promising stem cells for clinical application due to their low immunogenicity, tissue repair ability, pluripotent potential and potent paracrine effects. The conditional medium (hAMSC-CM) and exosomes (hAMSC-exo) derived from hAMSC, as mediators of intercellular communication, play an important role in the treatment of retinal diseases, but their effect and mechanism on oxidative stress-induced retinal degeneration are not explored. Here, we reported that hAMSC-CM alleviated H 2 O 2 -induced ARPE-19 cell death through inhibiting mitochondrial-mediated apoptosis pathway in vitro. The overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS), alteration in mitochondrial morphology, loss of mitochondrial membrane potential and elevation of Bax/Bcl2 ratio in ARPE-19 cells under oxidative stress were efficiently reversed by hAMSC-CM. Moreover, it was found that hAMSC-CM protected cells against oxidative injury via PI3K/Akt/FoxO3 signaling. Intriguingly, exosome inhibitor GW4869 alleviated the inhibitory effect of hAMSC-CM on H 2 O 2 -induced decrease in cell viability of ARPE-19 cells. We further demonstrated that hAMSC-exo exerted the similar protective effect on ARPE-19 cells against oxidative damage as hAMSC-CM. Additionally, both hAMSC-CM and hAMSC-exo ameliorated sodium iodate-induced deterioration of RPE and retinal damage in vivo. These results first indicate that hAMSC-CM and hAMSC-exo protect RPE cells from oxidative damage by regulating PI3K/Akt/FoxO3 pathway, suggesting hAMSC-CM and hAMSC-exo will be a promising cell-free therapy for the treatment of AMD in the future., (Copyright © 2024 The Authors. Purpose: Acute fatty liver of pregnancy (AFLP) is a relatively rare obstetric emergency usually accompanied by fatal complications. Numerous studies have evaluated the potential risk factors for outcomes in patients with AFLP. But rare studies evaluated the predictive ability, sensitivity and specificity of the risk factors for maternal mortality. Thus, in this multicenter research, we aimed to further prove the predictive ability of the MELD model, investigated the prognostic value of history of abortion (HOA), total bilirubin (TBiL) and serum creatinine (SCr) and explored new predictive models for predicting maternal mortality in patients with AFLP., Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study of 133 hospitalised patients with AFLP in four Chinese tertiary hospitals between January 2009 and April 2014., Results: The maximal AUC amongst three independent risk factors for maternal death was TBiL with a cut-off point of > 131.9 μmol/L, showing a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 55.9%. The threshold of the RF model for maternal mortality was - 1.629 and the AUC was 0.876, with an 81.8% sensitivity and an 80.2% specificity. The AUC for MELD model to predict maternal death was 0.894, and the best cut-off point was 28 with a sensitivity of 81.8% and a specificity of 84.7%., Conclusions: Both the MELD model and the RF model showed good efficacy in predicting the maternal mortality in patients with ALFP (AUC = 0.894 and 0.876, respectively)., (© 2023. Background: There has been a growing interest in venous thromboembolism following spinal surgery over the past few years. However, there currently needs to be a bibliometric report on this field. This study aims to construct the knowledge structure of venous thromboembolism after spinal surgery and explores the current status of research productivity, research directions, hotspots, and trends., Methods: All articles related to venous thromboembolism after spinal surgery from the Web of Science Core Collection database for 1990 to 2023 were retrieved. For bibliometric analysis, information extraction involves country/region, institutions, journals, authors, references, and keyword-related data., Results: In this study, a total of 814 articles were identified. Studies related to venous thromboembolism after spinal surgery are showing an increasing trend, with the United States contributing the most. JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY is a high-productivity institution. The journal "SPINE" is highly productive. Research directions cover venous thromboembolism and bleeding, risk factors and prevention, complications, and perioperative blood protection strategies. Current research hotspots are risk factors, surgical location and approach, and perioperative blood protection strategies. Objective: Although blood urea nitrogen (BUN) has a crucial impact on many diseases, its effect on outcomes in patients with hyperlipidemia remains unknown. The study aimed to investigate the relationships between BUN levels and all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality in individuals with hyperlipidemia., Methods: This analysis comprised 28,122 subjects with hyperlipidemia from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning 1999 to 2018. The risk of BUN on mortality was evaluated using weighted Cox regression models. Additionally, to illustrate the dose-response association, the restricted cubic spline (RCS) was used., Results: During the observation period, 4276 participant deaths were recorded, of which 1206 were due to CVD. Compared to patients with hyperlipidemia in the third BUN quintile, the hazard ratios (HRs) for all-cause mortality were 1.26 (95% CIs: 1.09, 1.45) and 1.22 (95% CIs: 1.09, 1.37) for patients in the first and fifth quintiles of BUN, respectively. The HRs for CVD mortality among patients in the fifth quintile of BUN were 1.48 (95% CIs: 1.14, 1.93). BUN levels were found to have a U-shaped association with all-cause mortality and a linear association with CVD mortality using restricted triple spline analysis., Conclusions: This study revealed that both low and high BUN levels in patients with hyperlipidemia are associated with heightened all-cause mortality. Furthermore, elevated BUN levels are also associated with increased CVD mortality. Glioma is the most common and aggressive type of primary malignant brain tumor. The N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification widely exists in eukaryotic cells and plays an important role in the occurrence and development of human tumors. However, the function and mechanism of heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein C (HNRNPC), an RNA-binding protein and m6A reader in gliomas remains to be comprehensively and extensively explored. Herein, we found that HNRNPC mRNA and protein overexpression were associated with a poor prognosis for patients with gliomas, based on the data from TCGA, the CGGA, and the TMAs. Biologically, HNRNPC knockdown markedly repressed malignant phenotypes of glioma in vitro and in vivo, whereas ectopic HNRNPC expression had the opposite effect. Integrative RNA sequencing and MeRIP sequencing analyses identified interleukin-1 receptor-associated kinase 1 (IRAK1) as a downstream target of HNRNPC. The glioma public datasets and tissue microarrays (TMAs) data indicated that IRAK1 overexpression was associated with poor prognosis, and IRAK1 knockdown significantly repressed malignant biological behavior in vitro. Mechanistically, HNRNPC maintains the mRNA stability of IRAK1 in an m6A-dependent manner, resulting in activation of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway, which was necessary for the malignant behavior of glioma. Our findings demonstrate the HNRNPC-IRAK1-MAPK axis as a crucial carcinogenic factor for glioma and the novel underlying mechanism of IRAK1 upregulation, which provides a rationale for therapeutically targeting epitranscriptomic modulators in glioma., (© 2024. Glioblastoma is one of the most challenging malignancies with high aggressiveness and invasiveness and its development and progression of glioblastoma highly depends on branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) metabolism. The study aimed to investigate effects of inhibition of BCAA metabolism with cytosolic branched-chain amino acid transaminase (BCATc) Inhibitor 2 on glioblastoma, elucidate its underlying mechanisms, and explore therapeutic potential of targeting BCAA metabolism. The expression of BCATc was upregulated in glioblastoma and BCATc Inhibitor 2 precipitated apoptosis both in vivo and in vitro with the activation of Bax/Bcl2/Caspase-3/Caspase-9 axis. In addition, BCATc Inhibitor 2 promoted K63-linkage ubiquitination of mitofusin 2 (Mfn2), which subsequently caused lysosomal degradation of Mfn2, and then oxidative stress, mitochondrial fission and loss of mitochondrial membrane potential. Furthermore, BCATc Inhibitor 2 treatment resulted in metabolic reprogramming, and significant inhibition of expression of ATP5A, UQCRC2, SDHB and COX II, indicative of suppressed oxidative phosphorylation. Moreover, Mfn2 overexpression or scavenging mitochondria-originated reactive oxygen species (ROS) with mito-TEMPO ameliorated BCATc Inhibitor 2-induced oxidative stress, mitochondrial membrane potential disruption and mitochondrial fission, and abrogated the inhibitory effect of BCATc Inhibitor 2 on glioblastoma cells through PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling. Studies have suggested that endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) is involved in neurological dysfunction and that electroacupuncture (EA) attenuates neuropathic pain (NP) via undefined pathways. However, the role of ERS in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) in NP and the effect of EA on ERS in the ACC have not yet been investigated. In this study, an NP model was established by chronic constriction injury (CCI) of the left sciatic nerve in rats, and mechanical and cold tests were used to evaluate behavioral hyperalgesia. The protein expression and distribution were evaluated using western blotting and immunofluorescence. The results showed that glucose-regulated protein 78 (BIP) and inositol-requiring enzyme 1α (IRE-1α) were co-localized in neurons in the ACC. After CCI, BIP, IRE-1α, and phosphorylation of IRE-1α were upregulated in the ACC. Intra-ACC administration of 4-PBA and Kira-6 attenuated pain hypersensitivity and downregulated phosphorylation of IRE-1α, while intraperitoneal injection of 4-PBA attenuated hyperalgesia and inhibited the activation of P38 and JNK in ACC. In contrast, ERS activation by intraperitoneal injection of tunicamycin induced behavioral hyperalgesia in naive rats. Furthermore, EA attenuated pain hypersensitivity and inhibited the CCI-induced overexpression of BIP and pIRE-1α. Taken together, these results demonstrate that EA attenuates NP by suppressing BIP- and IRE-1α-mediated ERS in the ACC. The human eye is susceptible to various disorders that affect its structure or function, including glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy (DR). Mitochondrial dysfunction has been identified as a critical factor in the pathogenesis and progression of eye disorders, making it a potential therapeutic target in the clinic. Natural products have been used in traditional medicine for centuries and continue to play a significant role in modern drug development and clinical therapeutics. Recently, there has been a surge in research exploring the efficacy of natural products in treating eye disorders and their underlying physiological mechanisms. This review aims to discuss the involvement of mitochondrial dysfunction in eye disorders and summarize the recent advances in the application of natural products targeting mitochondria. At present, the method for calculating long-term tunnel settlement predictions under metro loading considers only one working condition of passenger loading, which is inconsistent with actual working conditions. To establish a tunnel settlement model that accounts for variations in passenger flow, this study uses data mining methods to categorize metro operation into three working conditions: "peak period, secondary period, and low period." The impact of these passenger flow conditions on the dynamic response of the soil around the tunnel is analyzed. Then, based on the principles of calculus, a calculus-based prediction model is established to consider the changing patterns of metro passenger flow. The model is applied to analyze the long-term settlement characteristics of Shanghai Metro Line 10. The results indicate that, under identical conditions, soil displacement and dynamic deviatoric stress around the tunnel increase with passenger capacity. The calculus prediction model aligns more closely with actual working conditions than the conventional model. The predicted tunnel settlement of Shanghai Metro Line 10 after 20 years of operation is approximately 37.07 mm, with most settlement occurring in the early stages, primarily due to cumulative plastic deformation of the soil., (© 2024. Background: Patients with large acute ischemic strokes (AIS) often have a poor prognosis despite successful recanalization due to multiple factors including reperfusion injury. The authors aim to describe our preliminary experience of endovascular cooling in patients with a large AIS after recanalization., Methods: From January 2021 to July 2022, AIS patients presenting with large infarcts (defined as ASPECTS ≤5 on noncontrast CT or ischemic core ≥50 ml on CT perfusion) who achieved successful recanalization after endovascular treatment were analyzed in a prospective registry. Patients were divided into targeted temperature management (TTM) and non-TTM group. Patients in the TTM group received systemic cooling with a targeted core temperature of 33° for at least 48 h. The primary outcome is 90-day favorable outcome [modified Rankin Scale (mRS) 0-2]. The secondary outcomes are 90-day good outcome (mRS 0-3), mortality, intracranial hemorrhage and malignant cerebral edema within 7 days or at discharge., Results: Forty-four AIS patients were recruited (15 cases in the TTM group and 29 cases in the non-TTM group). The median Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score (ASPECTS) was 3 (2-5). The median time for hypothermia duration was 84 (71.5-147.6) h. The TTM group had a numerically higher proportion of 90-day favorable outcomes than the non-TTM group (46.7 vs. 27.6%, P=0.210), and no significant difference were found regarding secondary outcomes (all P>0.05). The TTM group had a numerically higher rates of pneumonia (66.7 vs. 58.6%, P=0.604) and deep vein thrombosis (33.3 vs. 13.8%, P=0.138). Shivering occurred in 4/15 (26.7%) of the TTM patients and in none of the non-TTM patients (P=0.009)., Conclusions: Postrecanalization cooling is feasible in patients with a large ischemic core. Bulk density and porosity have great influence on the technical performance of an emulsified asphalt mixture, so in order to enhance the strength of the asphalt mixture, bulk density should be improved and porosity should be reduced. Considering the forming process of the emulsified asphalt mixture, the decrease in porosity can ensure the state of the mixture. In order to reduce the porosity of the emulsified asphalt mixture, an innovative forming process is proposed to improve the performance of the emulsified asphalt mixture, and its strength formation mechanism is explored in this paper. Three groups of emulsified asphalt mixtures (ARC-8 + SBR, SMA-5 + EVA, SMA-5 + SBR) were prepared by a conventional mixing process and novel mixing process. Marshall test of the emulsified asphalt mixture, CT scanning test of the emulsified asphalt mixture, workability test and analysis were manufactured and tested. The results show that, compared with conventional methods, the innovative forming method can increase the bulk density of the mixture and reduce the porosity, and thus improve its technical performance. The reason is that most of the water in the mixture of the innovative forming method sticks to the outer surface of the fine aggregate, and the water is more easily discharged. Secondly, the fine aggregate of the innovative forming method is directly mixed with the emulsion, and the volume is smaller. The emulsion wraps the fine aggregate in it due to the surface tension, which enhances the adhesion effect, thus improving the strength of the mixture.

Waste biomass is one of the promising feedstocks to supply syngas that can be used as fuels, chemicals, reductants, etc. However, the relationship between the component of biomass and the constituent of pyrolysis gas remains unclear. Here, we study the pyrolysis behaviors of various biomasses and reveal the relationship between the biomass components and gas compositions. Further, different pyrolysis gases are applied for the reduction of spent lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO 2 ) below 500 °C. The pyrolysis gas with a higher concentration of CO has a higher reductivity to convert LiCoO 2 to CoO and Li 2 CO 3 with a conversion rate close to 100% in 1 h at 500 °C. The biomass rich in cellulose and with a lower content of lignin tends to produce pyrolysis gas with a high concentration of CO, which comes from the deliberate breakdown of carboxyl, carbonyl, ether, and ester linkages. Moreover, LiCoO 2 exerts catalytic functions over the deoxygenation and enhancement of oxygenates and single-ring aromatics. Overall, this paper offers a tailored approach to regulating biomass pyrolysis gases, enabling highly efficient battery recycling and syngas production.

Cisplatin resistance is a major obstacle in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). p32 and OPA1 are the key regulators of mitochondrial morphology and function. This study aims to investigate the role of the p32/OPA1 axis in cisplatin resistance in NSCLC and its underlying mechanism. The levels of p32 protein and mitochondrial fusion protein OPA1 are higher in cisplatin-resistant A549/DDP cells than in cisplatin-sensitive A549 cells, which facilitates mitochondrial fusion in A549/DDP cells. In addition, the expression of p32 and OPA1 protein is also upregulated in A549 cells during the development of cisplatin resistance. Moreover, p32 knockdown effectively downregulates the expression of OPA1, stimulates mitochondrial fission, decreases ATP generation and sensitizes A549/DDP cells to cisplatin-induced apoptosis. Furthermore, metformin significantly downregulates the expressions of p32 and OPA1 and induces mitochondrial fission and a decrease in ATP level in A549/DDP cells. The co-administration of metformin and cisplatin shows a significantly greater decrease in A549/DDP cell viability than cisplatin treatment alone. Moreover, D-erythro-Sphingosine, a potent p32 kinase activator, counteracts the metformin-induced downregulation of OPA1 and mitochondrial fission in A549/DDP cells. Taken together, these findings indicate that p32/OPA1 axis-mediated mitochondrial dynamics contributes to the acquired cisplatin resistance in NSCLC and that metformin resensitizes NSCLC to cisplatin, suggesting that targeting p32 and mitochondrial dynamics is an effective strategy for the prevention of cisplatin resistance.

Introduction: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is the most common metabolic disease in pregnancy. However, studies of activating molecule of Beclin1-regulated autophagy (Ambra1) affecting the insulin substrate receptor 1/phosphatidylinositol 3 kinase/protein kinase B (IRS-1/PI3K/Akt) signalling pathway in GDM have not been reported. The aim of the study was to detect the difference of Ambra1 expression in the placenta of normal pregnant women and GDM patients., Material and Methods: An in vitro model of gestational diabetes mellitus was established by inducing HTR8/Svneo cells from human chorionic trophoblast layer with high glucose. The changes of cell morphology were observed by inverted microscope, and the expression levels of Ambra1 gene and protein in model cells were detected. After this, Ambra1 gene was silenced by shRNA transfection, and PI3K inhibitor was added to detect changes in Ambra1, autophagy, and insulin (INS) signalling pathways., Results: The protein expression levels of Ambra1, Bcl-2 interacting protein (Beclin-1), and microtubule-associated proteins 1A/1B light chain 3B (LC3-II) in the placentas of GDM pregnant women were higher than those of normal pregnant women. High glucose induces morphological changes in HTR8/Svneo cells and increases Ambra1 transcription and translation levels. sh-Ambra1 increased survival of HTR8/SvNEO-HG cells and inhibited Ambra1, Beclin1, and LC3-II transcription and translation levels. Also, sh-Ambra1 increased IRS-1/PI3K/Akt protein phosphorylation levels and inhibited the IRS-1/PI3K/Akt signalling pathway and its resulting autophagy., Conclusions: sh-Ambra1 increased IRS-1/PI3K/Akt protein phosphorylation levels to reduce autophagy in gestational diabetes.

Liver fibrosis, characterized by the overproduction of extracellular matrix proteins within liver tissue, poses a rising global health concern. However, no approved antifibrotic drugs are currently available, highlighting the critical need for understanding the molecular mechanisms of liver fibrosis. This knowledge could not only aid in developing therapies but also enable early intervention, enhance disease prediction, and improve our understanding of the interaction between various underlying conditions and the liver. Notably, natural products used in traditional medicine systems worldwide and demonstrating diverse biochemical and pharmacological activities are increasingly recognized for their potential in treating liver fibrosis. This review aims to comprehensively understand liver fibrosis, emphasizing the molecular mechanisms and advancements in exploring natural products' antifibrotic potential over the past five years. Objective: Patients with cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) may die during the acute phase due to increased intracranial pressure and cerebral herniation. The purpose of this study was to assess the role of decompressive craniectomy in the treatment of patients with malignant CVST., Methods: Patients who underwent decompressive craniectomy and were consequently admitted to the Critical Care Unit, Department of Neurosurgery, at Capital Medical University Xuanwu Hospital from March 2010 to January 2021 were retrospectively examined with follow-up data at 12 months., Results: In total, 14 cases were reviewed, including 9 female and 5 male patients, aged 23-63 years (42.7 ± 12.3 years). Prior to surgery, all patients had a GCS score <9. 6 patients had a unilateral dilated pupil, while 4 patients had bilateral dilated pupils. According to the head computed tomography (CT), all patients had hemorrhagic infarction, and the median midline shift was 9.5 mm before surgery. Thirteen patients underwent unilateral decompressive craniectomy, and 1 patient underwent bilateral decompressive craniectomy, among whom, 9 patients underwent hematoma evacuation. Within 3 weeks of surgery, 3 cases (21.43%) resulted in death, with 2 patients dying from progressive intracranial hypertension and 1 from acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Eleven patients (78.57%) survived after surgery, of whom 4 (28.57%) patients recovered without disability at 12-month follow-up (mRS 0-1), 2 (14.29%) patients had moderate disability (mRS 2-3), and 5 (35.71%) patients had severe disability (mRS 4-5)., Conclusions: Emergent decompressive craniectomy may provide a chance for survival and enable patients with malignant CVST to achieve an acceptable quality of life (QOL)., (Copyright © 2023 Elsevier Inc. Cuproptosis is a novel discovered mode of programmed cell death. To identify the molecular regulatory patterns related to cuproptosis, this study was designed for exploring the correlation between cuproptosis-related genes (CRGs) and the prognosis, metabolism, and treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database was used to screen 363 HCC samples, which were categorized into 2 clusters based on the expression of CRGs. Survival analysis demonstrated that overall survival (OS) was better in Cluster 1 than Cluster 2 which might to be relevant to differences in metabolic based on functional analysis. With LASSO regression analysis and univariate COX regression, 8 prognosis-related genes were screened, a differently expressed genes (DEGs) were then constructed (HCC patients' DEGs)-based signature. The signature's stability was also validated in the 2 independent cohorts and test cohorts (GSE14520, HCC dataset in PCAWG). The 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year area under the curve (AUC) were 0.756, 0.706, and 0.722, respectively. The signature could also well predict the response to chemotherapy, targeted and transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) by providing a risk score. Moreover, the correlation was uncovered by the research between the metabolism and risk score. Photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) are effective method for tumor treatment. However, the limited variety and quantity of photothermal agents (PTAs) and photosensitizer (PSs) are still major challenges. Moreover, the cell apoptosis mechanism induced by PDT and PTT is still elusive. A fused-ring small molecule acceptor-donor acceptor' donor-acceptor (A-DA'D-A) type of Y5 (Scheme 1) has a narrow band-gap and strong light absorption. Herein, we used Y5 to polymerize with thiophene unit to obtain polymer PYT based on polymerized small molecule strategy, and PYT nanoparticles (PYT NPs) was prepared via one-step nanoprecipitation strategy with DSPE-PEG 2000 . PYT NPs had excellent biocompatibility, good photostability, high photothermal conversion efficiency (67%) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production capacity under 808 nm laser irradiation (PYT NPs + NIR). In vitro and in vivo experiments revealed that PYT NPs + NIR had the ability to completely ablate tumor cells. It was demonstrated that cell apoptosis induced by PYT NPs + NIR was closely related to mitochondrial damage. This study provides valuable guidance for constructing high-performance organic PTAs and PSs for tumor treatment. In nature, regulation of the spatiotemporal distribution of interfacial receptors and ligands leads to optimum binding kinetics and thermodynamics of receptor-ligand binding reactions within interfaces. Inspired by this, we report a hierarchical fluid interface (HieFluidFace) to regulate the spatiotemporal distribution of interfacial ligands to increase the rate and thermodynamic favorability of interfacial binding reactions. Each aptamer-functionalized gold nanoparticle, termed spherical aptamer (SAPT), is anchored on a supported lipid bilayer without fluidity, like an "island", and is surrounded by many fluorescent aptamers (FAPTs) with free fluidity, like "rafts". Such ligand "island-rafts" model provides a large reactive cross-section for rapid binding to cellular receptors. The synergistic multivalency of SAPTs and FAPTs improves interfacial affinity for tight capture. Moreover, FAPTs accumulate at binding sites to bind to cellular receptors with clustered fluorescence to "lighten" cells for direct identification. Thus, HieFluidFace in a microfluidic chip achieves high-performance capture and identification of circulating tumor cells from clinical samples, providing a new paradigm to optimize the kinetics and thermodynamics of interfacial binding reactions., (© 2023 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

During intravascular interventional surgery, the 3D surgical navigation system can provide doctors with 3D spatial information of the vascular lumen, reducing the impact of missing dimension caused by digital subtraction angiography (DSA) guidance and further improving the success rate of surgeries. Nevertheless, this task often comes with the challenge of complex registration problems due to vessel deformation caused by respiratory motion and high requirements for the surgical environment because of the dependence on external electromagnetic sensors. This article proposes a novel 3D spatial predictive positioning navigation (SPPN) technique to predict the real-time tip position of surgical instruments. In the first stage, we propose a trajectory prediction algorithm integrated with instrumental morphological constraints to generate the initial trajectory. Then, a novel hybrid physical model is designed to estimate the trajectory's energy and mechanics. In the second stage, a point cloud clustering algorithm applies multi-information fusion to generate the maximum probability endpoint cloud. Then, an energy-weighted probability density function is introduced using statistical analysis to achieve the prediction of the 3D spatial location of instrument endpoints. Extensive experiments are conducted on 3D-printed human artery and vein models based on a high-precision electromagnetic tracking system. Experimental results demonstrate the outstanding performance of our method, reaching 98.2% of the achievement ratio and less than 3 mm of the average positioning accuracy. This work is the first 3D surgical navigation algorithm that entirely relies on vascular interventional robot sensors, effectively improving the accuracy of interventional surgery and making it more accessible for primary surgeons.

Background: We investigated the associations between the different doses of tigecycline, its efficacy and safety, and the role of tigecycline therapeutic drug monitoring for patients in the intensive care unit., Methods: This study was a single-center cohort including patients infected with multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (MDR-AB) and multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (MDR-KP) causing pulmonary infections. The steady-state plasma concentration after tigecycline administration was determined by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) in patients admitted to the ICU between October 2020 and December 2021. Multivariate analyses of tigecycline's clinical efficacy and safety were performed to control confounding factors., Results: For this study, we included 45 patients and 45 blood samples to determine steady-state trough concentrations of tigecycline. All patients were divided into the High Dose (HD) and Standard Dose (SD) groups. The median trough concentration of tigecycline was 0.56 μg/mL in the HD group, which was higher than in the SD group (0,21 μg/mL), p = 0.000. There was no significant difference between the two groups of patients in terms of bacterial eradication rate, mortality rate, and clinical efficacy. Multiple regression analysis showed that the ICU days were correlated with mortality OR 1.030(1.005-1.056), p = 0.017. APACHE II was significantly associated with clinical efficacy OR 0.870(0.755-1.002), p = 0.045. The level of fibrinogen decline in the HD group was significantly higher than in the SD group (-3.05 ± 1.67 vs -1.75 ± 1.90), p = 0.038. We identified that age and tigecycline treatment duration influenced fibrinogen decline., Conclusions: Tigecycline plasma concentrations are significantly increased when using a high dose. However, the plasma concentration of tigecycline is not correlated with clinical efficacy and adverse reactions. Fibrinogen decline appears to be related to the patient's age and days of tigecycline. Objective: To verify whether the area of the ONSAS (ONSASA) obtained by transorbital ultrasonography can be used to accurately evaluate the intracranial pressure (ICP)., Methods: The recorded indexes included the optic nerve diameter, the optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD), the width of both sides of the ONSAS (ONSASW) at 3 mm from the optic nerve head and the entire ONSASA outlined between 3 and 7 mm. After exploring and comparing five models to describe the relationship between body mass index (BMI), mean arterial blood pressure (MABP), ONSASA and ICP, the best model was determined., Results: In all, 90 patients with neurological diseases undergoing continuous invasive ICP monitoring were included in the study. In the training group, the correlation coefficient for the association between the ICP and ONSASA (Pearson's correlation r=0.953) was higher than that for the association of the ICP with the ONSD (r=0.672; p<0.0001) and ONSASW at 3 mm behind the globe (r=0.691; p<0.0001). In the training group, the weighting function for prediction of the ICP was as follows: non-invasive ICP=2.050×ONSASA-0.051×BMI +0.036*MABP-5.837. With 20 mm Hg as the cut-off point for a high or low ICP, the sensitivity and specificity of ONSASA predicting ICP was 1.00 and 0.92. This research aimed to develop an effective method for detecting semivolatile earthy-musty odors without using the conventional sample processing equipment used for volatile compounds. The concurrent isolation of 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB), trans -1,10-dimethyl-trans-9-decalol (geosmin, GSM), 2-isopropyl-3-methoxy pyrazine (IPMP), and 2-isobutyl-3-methoxy pyrazine (IBMP) in tap water was successfully achieved by employing a combination of n-hexane liquid‒liquid extraction (LLE) and silica solid-phase extraction (SPE) techniques. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was utilized for the identification of these targets, with the inclusion of borneol (BN) as an internal reference. This robust method was optimized and validated. It was found that the method showed good linearity in the range of 0.5-100 ng/mL and produced good recoveries (84.6 %-103 %) with satisfactory relative standard deviations (1.50 %-10.1 %). The determined limits of detection (LODs) for the group of four substances were found to vary from 0.3 to 0.9 ng/L, whereas the limits of quantitation (LOQs) exhibited variations between 1 and 3 ng/L. Neurological disorders are diverse, have complex causes, and often result in disability; yet, effective treatments remain scarce. The resveratrol derivative pterostilbene possesses numerous physiological activities that hold promise as a novel therapy for the central nervous system (CNS) disorders. This review aimed to summarize the protective mechanisms of pterostilbene in in vitro and in vivo models of CNS disorders and the pharmacokinetics and safety to assess its possible effects on CNS disorders. Available evidence supports the protective effects of pterostilbene in CNS disorders involving mechanisms such as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, regulation of lipid metabolism and vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation, improvement of synaptic function and neurogenesis, induction of glioma cell cycle arrest, and inhibition of glioma cell migration and invasion. Studies have identified possible molecular targets and pathways for the protective actions of pterostilbene in CNS disorders including the AMPK/STAT3, Akt, NF-κB, MAPK, and ERK signaling pathways. The possible pharmacological effects and molecular pathways of pterostilbene in CNS disorders are critically discussed in this review. Future studies should aim to increase our understanding of pterostilbene in animal models and humans to further evaluate its role in CNS disorders and the detailed mechanisms.

The development of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) recycling technologies can effectively alleviate environmental pressure and conserve metal resources. We propose a win-win strategy for pyrolysis gas reduction by lignocellulosic biomass, ensuring gas-induced reduction by spatial isolation of biomass and lithium transition metal oxides (LiTMO X (TM = Ni, Co, Mn)), and avoiding the separation of solid carbon and TMO X (TM = Ni, Co, Mn). In the spent LiCoO 2 batteries, the lithium recovery efficiency reaches 99.99% and purity reaches 98.3% at 500 °C. In addition, biomass pyrolysis gas reduction is also applicable to treat spent LiMn 2 O 4 and LiNi 0.6 Co 0.2 Mn 0.2 O 2 batteries. Thermodynamic analysis verifies that CO dominates the gas reduction recovery process. DFT calculation indicates that the gas reduction induces the collapse of the oxygen framework of LiTMO X (TM = Ni, Co, Mn). The purpose of this study was to estimate the prevalence of suicidal ideation and correlated risk factors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Web of Science (WOS) and PubMed were searched according to a pre-set strategy. A total of 132 studies were identified, 104 of which were included in the meta-analysis. The prevalence of suicidal ideation was approximately 14.7% (95%CI: 12.5%, 16.8%, P < 0.01) in the general population, approximately 22.4% (95%CI: 17.1%, 27.8%, P < 0.01）in adolescents, approximately 21.0% (95%CI: 12.8%, 29.2%, P < 0.01) in psychiatric patients, approximately 20.6% (95%CI: 18.7%, 22.5%, P < 0.01）in university students, approximately 18.9% (95%CI: 8.3%, 29.5%, P < 0.01) in younger adults, approximately 10.6% (95%CI: 1.0%, 20.2%, P = 0.031) in COVID-19 patients and approximately 7.4% (95%CI: 4.3%, 10.5%, P < 0.01) in healthcare workers. The prevalence in North America was approximately 16.0% (95%CI: 13.6%-18.4%, P < 0.001), approximately 14.5% in Asia (95%CI: 9.5%-19.4%, P < 0.001), approximately 10.5% in Europe (95%CI: 8.5%-12.4%, P < 0.001), and approximately 20.5% in South America (95%CI: 19.5%-21.5%, P < 0.001). The following were risk factors which might be correlated with suicidal ideation: severe anxiety symptoms, mild to moderate depression, a strong feeling of loneliness/social isolation, poor sleep quality, having COVID-19-related experience, having quarantine or lockdown experience, being female, being single or divorced, having financial problems and having a history of suicidal ideation/attempt. Purpose: Thoracic myelopathy caused by ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) in the thoracic spine is usually progressive and responds poorly to conservative therapy, making surgery the only effective treatment option. A variety of surgical procedures have been developed to treat thoracic OPLL. However, the optimal surgical approach for removal of thoracic OPLL remains unclear. In the present study, we described a newly modified posterior approach for the removal of OPLL: circular decompression via dural approach, and complete removal of OPLL can be achieved under direct vision and without neurological deficit., Materials and Methods: Three patients with beak-type thoracic OPLL presented with progressive thoracic myelopathy and leg weakness. Magnetic resonance imaging showed the spinal cord severely compressed. The surgical management of the three patients involved the 'cave-in' circular decompression and transdural resection of OPLL., Results: Transdural circumferential decompression was successfully performed in all three patients. Clinical outcome measures, including pre- and postoperative radiographic parameters, were assessed. All of the patients were followed up for an average of 12 months (ranging from 10 to 15 months), and no surgery-related complications occurred. Weakness relief and neural function recovery were satisfactorily achieved in all patients by the final follow-up., Conclusions: Transdural circumferential decompression was an effective method for thoracic spinal stenosis caused by concurrent beak-type OPLL, by which OPLL could be safely removed. It is especially useful when there is a severe adhesion between the dura OPLL.

Retinal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury is a common pathological process responsible for cellular damage in glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and hypertensive retinopathy. Metformin is a biguanide drug that exerts strong effects on multiple diseases. This study aims to evaluate the protective effect of metformin against retinal I/R injury and its underlying mechanism. I/R induced reduction in retina thickness and cell number in ganglion cell layer, and metformin alleviated I/R-induced retinal injury. Both retinal I/R and simulated ischemia/reperfusion (SIR) in R28 cells down-regulated expression of mitochondrial fusion protein Mfn2 and OPA1, which led to mitochondrial fission. Metformin also alleviated damage in R28 cells, and reversed the alteration in Mfn2 and OPA1, mitochondrial fission and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) disruption-induced by I/R or SIR as well. Intriguingly, inhibition of AMPK by compound C or siRNA prevented metformin-mediated up-regulation of Mfn2 and OPA1. Compound C and knockdown of Mfn2 or OPA1 dramatically alleviated the protective effect of metformin against intracellular ROS generation, MMP disruption, mitochondrial fission and loss of RGCs in ganglion cell layer induced by SIR or I/R. Moreover, scavenging mitochondrial ROS (mito-ROS) by mito-TEMPO exerted the similar protection against I/R-induced retinal injury or SIR-induced damage in R28 cells as metformin. Our data show for the first time that metformin protects against retinal I/R injury through AMPK-mediated mitochondrial fusion and the decreased mito-ROS generation.
