We present a comprehensive study of buckled honeycomb germanene functionalized with alternately bonded side groups hydroxyl (-H), methyl (-CH 3 ) and trifluoro methyl (-CF 3 ). By means of most modern theoretical and computational methods we determine the atomic geometries versus the functionalizing groups. The quasiparticle excitation effects on the electronic structure are taken into account by means of exchange-correlation treatment within the GW framework. The Bethe-Salpeter equation is solved ab initio to derive optical spectra including excitonic and quasiparticle effects. Band edge excitons are investigated in detail. The binding properties are compared with those resulting from model studies. The functionalization leads to significantly modified band structures compared with pristine germanene. The Dirac bands near the K point are destroyed and direct gaps appear at the Γ point. Together with the many-body effects, quasiparticle gaps of 2.3, 1.8 or 1.0 eV result for -H, -CH 3 and -CF 3 functionalization. Totally different absorption spectra are found for in-plane and out-of-plane light polarization. Strongly bound excitons are visible below the quasiparticle band edge with binding energies of about 0.5, 0.4 or 0.3 eV. We present a systematic study of the low-energy electrodynamics of the magnetic FeSn kagome metal, which hosts both topological (Dirac) and non-trivial states. Our results reveal that the optical conductivity of FeSn shows two Drude contributions that can be associated with the linear (Dirac) and parabolic (massive) bands, with a dominance of the former to the DC conductivity at low temperatures. The weight of the Drude response shifts toward lower frequencies upon cooling due to a rapid increase in the Dirac electron mobility, which we associate with a temperature suppression of e-ph scattering. The experimental interband dielectric function is in very good agreement with that calculated within Density Functional Theory (DFT). These results provide a full description of the charge dynamics in FeSn kagome topological metal, opening the road for its use in photonic and plasmonic applications., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Graphene-covered hexagonal SiC substrates have been frequently discussed to be appropriate starting points for epitaxial overlayers of Xenes, such as plumbene, or even their deposition as intercalates between graphene and SiC. Here, we investigate, within density functional theory, the plumbene deposition for various layer orderings and substrate terminations. By means of total energy studies we demonstrate the favorization of the intercalation versus the epitaxy for both C-terminated and Si-terminated 4H-SiC substrates. These results are explained in terms of chemical bonding and by means of layer-resolved projected band structures. Our results are compared with available experimental findings., (© 2024. We report on DFT-TDDFT studies of the structural, electronic and vibrational properties of B24N24 nanocapsules and the effect of encapsulation of homonuclear diatomic halogens (Cl2, Br2 and I2) and chalcogens (S2 and Se2) on the interaction of the B24N24 nanocapsules with the divalent magnesium cation. In particular, to foretell whether these BN nanostructures could be proper negative electrodes for magnesium-ion batteries, the structural, vibrational and electronic properties, as well as the interaction energy and the cell voltage, which is important for applications, have been computed for each system, highlighting their differences and similarities. The encapsulation of halogen and chalcogen diatomic molecules increases the cell voltage, with an effect enhanced down groups 16 and 17 of the periodic table, leading to better performing anodes and fulfilling a remarkable cell voltage of 3.61 V for the iodine-encapsulated system.

We present a comprehensive study of the structural and electronic properties of a graphene/phosphorene (G/P) heterostructure in the framework of density functional theory, including van der Waals interaction in the exchange-correlation functional. While the G(4 × 1)/P(3 × 1) superlattice usually used in the literature is subject to a strain as high as about 7%, the in-plane strain could be drastically reduced to under 1% in the G(4 × 13)/P(3 × 12) heterostructure investigated here. Adapting the lattice constants of the rectangular lattices, the equilibrium configuration in the xy plane of phosphorene relative to the graphene layer is optimized. This results in an equilibrium interlayer distance of 3.5 Å and a binding energy per carbon atom of 37 meV, confirming the presence of weak van der Waals interaction between the graphene and the phosphorene layers. The electronic properties of the heterostructure are evaluated under different values of interlayer distance, strain and applied vertical electric field. We demonstrate that G/P heterostructures form an n -type Schottky contact, which can be transformed into p -type under external perturbations. These findings, together with the possibility to control the gaps and barrier heights, suggest that G/P heterostructures are promising for novel applications in electronics and may open a new avenue for the realization of innovative optoelectronic devices.

The electronic properties of hydrogenated, spherical SiGe and GeSi core-shell nanocrystals, with a diameter ranging from 1.8 to 4.0 nm, are studied within density functional theory. Effects induced by quantum confinement and strain on the near-band-edge state localization, as well as the band-offset properties between Si and Ge regions, are investigated in detail. On the one hand, we prove that SiGe core-shell nanocrystals always show a type II band-offset alignment, with the HOMO mainly localized on the Ge shell region and the LUMO mainly localized on the Si core region. On the other hand, our results point out that a type II offset cannot be observed in small (diameter less than 3 nm) GeSi core-shell nanocrystals. In these systems, quantum confinement and strain drive the near-band-edge states to be mainly localized on Ge atoms, i.e., in the core region. In larger GeSi core-shell nanocrystals, instead, the formation of a type II offset can be engineered by playing with both core and shell thickness. The study of intra and interlayer excitons in 2D semiconducting vdW heterostructures is a very hot topic not only from a fundamental but also an applicative point of view. Due to their strong light-matter interaction, Transition Metal Dichalcogenides (TMD) and group-III nitrides are particularly attractive in the field of opto-electronic applications such as photo-catalytic and photo-voltaic ultra-thin and flexible devices. Using first-principles ground and excited-state simulations, we investigate here the electronic and excitonic properties of a representative nitride/TMD heterobilayer, the AlN/WS2. We demonstrate that the band alignment is of type I, and low energy intralayer excitons are similar to those of a pristine WS2 monolayer. Further, we disentangle the role of strain and AlN dielectric screening on the electronic and optical gaps. These results, although they do not favor the possible use of AlN /WS2 in photo-catalysis, as envisaged in the previous literature, can boost the recently started experimental studies of 2D hexagonal aluminum nitride as a good low screening substrate for TMD-based electronic and opto-electronic devices. Importantly, our work shows how the inclusion of both spin-orbit and many-body interactions is compulsory for the correct prediction of the electronic and optical properties of TMD/nitride heterobilayers.

In this work, ab initio Density Functional Theory calculations are performed to investigate the evolution of the electronic and optical properties of 2D Tellurium-called Tellurene-for three different allotropic forms (α-, β- and γ-phase), as a function of the number of layers. We estimate the exciton binding energies and radii of the studied systems, using a 2D analytical model. Our results point out that these quantities are strongly dependent on the allotropic form, as well as on the number of layers. Remarkably, we show that the adopted method is suitable for reliably predicting, also in the case of Tellurene, the exciton binding energy, without the need of computationally demanding calculations, possibly suggesting interesting insights into the features of the system. Finally, we inspect the nature of the mechanisms ruling the interaction of neighbouring Tellurium atoms helical chains (characteristic of the bulk and α-phase crystal structures). We show that the interaction between helical chains is strong and cannot be explained by solely considering the van der Waals interaction.

In this work, we study the structural and electronic properties of boron nitride bilayers sandwiched between graphene sheets. Different stacking, twist angles, doping, as well as an applied external gate voltage, are reported to induce important changes in the electronic band structure near the Fermi level. Small electronic lateral gaps of the order of few meV can appear near the Dirac points K. We further discuss how the bandstructures change applying a perpendicular external electric field, showing how its application lifts the degeneracy of the Dirac cones and, in the twisted case, moves their crossing points away from the Fermi energy. Then, we consider the possibility of co-doping, in an asymmetric way, the two external graphene layers. This is a situation that could be realized in heterostructures deposited on a substrate. We show that the co-doping acts as an effective external electric field, breaking the Dirac cones degeneracy. Finally, our work demonstrates how, by playing with field strength and p-n co-doping, it is possible to tune the small lateral gaps, pointing towards a possible application of C/BN sandwich structures as nano-optical terahertz devices.

In this work, we investigate by ab initio calculations and optical experiments the sensitivity of graphene quantum dots in their use as devices to measure the presence, and concentration, of heavy metals in water. We demonstrate that the quenching or enhancement in the optical response (absorption, emission) depends on the metallic ion considered. In particular, two cases of opposite behaviour are considered in detail: Cd2+, where we observe an increase in the emission optical response for increasing concentration, and Pb2+ whose emission spectra, vice versa, are quenched along the concentration rise. The experimental trends reported comply nicely with the different hydration patterns suggested by the models that are also capable of reproducing the minor quenching/enhancing effects observed in other ions. We envisage that quantum dots of graphene may be routinely used as cheap detectors to measure the degree of poisoning ions in water.

The thermodynamic stability of hydroxylated graphane, that is, fully sp 3 graphene derivatives coordinated with -H and -OH groups, has been recently demonstrated by ab initio calculations. Within the density functional theory approach, we investigate the electronic property modifications of graphane by progressive hydroxylation, that is, by progressively substituting -H with -OH groups. When 50% of graphane is hydroxylated, the energy bandgap reaches its largest value of 6.68 eV. The electronic affinity of 0.8 eV for graphane can widely change in the 0.28-1.60 eV range depending on the geometric configuration. Hydroxylated graphane has two interfaces with vacuum, hence its electron affinity can be different on each interface with the formation of an intrinsic dipole perpendicular to the monolayer. Combining scanning tunneling microscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we demonstrate how to tune the doping of epitaxial graphene from p to n by exploiting the structural changes that occur spontaneously on the Ge surface upon thermal annealing. Furthermore, using first-principle calculations, we build a model that successfully reproduces the experimental observations. Since the ability to modify graphene electronic properties is of fundamental importance when it comes to applications, our results provide an important contribution toward the integration of graphene with conventional semiconductors.

We studied monatomic linear carbon chains stabilized by gold nanoparticles attached to their ends and deposited on a solid substrate. We observe spectral features of straight chains containing from 8 to 24 atoms. Low-temperature PL spectra reveal characteristic triplet fine structures that repeat themselves for carbon chains of different lengths. The triplet is invariably composed of a sharp intense peak accompanied by two broader satellites situated 15 and 40 meV below the main peak. We interpret these resonances as an edge-state neutral exciton and positively and negatively charged trions, respectively. The time-resolved PL shows that the radiative lifetime of the observed quasiparticles is about 1 ns, and it increases with the increase of the length of the chain. At high temperatures a nonradiative exciton decay channel appears due to the thermal hopping of carriers between parallel carbon chains. Excitons in carbon chains possess large oscillator strengths and extremely low inhomogeneous broadenings.

Absorption and emission of pristine-like semiconducting monolayers of BN, AlN, GaN, and InN are systematically studied by ab-initio methods. We calculate the absorption spectra for in-plane and out-of-plane light polarization including quasiparticle and excitonic effects. Chemical trends with the cation of the absorption edge and the exciton binding are discussed in terms of the band structures. Exciton binding energies and localization radii are explained within the Rytova-Keldysh model for excitons in two dimensions. The strong excitonic effects are due to the interplay of low dimensionality, confinement effects, and reduced screening. We find exciton radiative lifetimes ranging from tenths of picoseconds (BN) to tenths of nanoseconds (InN) at room temperature, thus making 2D nitrides, especially InN, promising materials for light-emitting diodes and high-performance solar cells.

Development of on-chip integrated carbon-based optoelectronic nanocircuits requires fast and non-invasive structural characterization of their building blocks. Recent advances in synthesis of single wall carbon nanotubes and graphene nanoribbons allow for their use as atomically precise building blocks. However, while cataloged experimental data are available for the structural characterization of carbon nanotubes, such an atlas is absent for graphene nanoribbons. Here we theoretically investigate the optical absorption resonances of armchair carbon nanotubes and zigzag graphene nanoribbons continuously spanning the tube (ribbon) transverse sizes from 0.5(0.4) nm to 8.1(12.8) nm. We show that the linear mapping is guaranteed between the tube and ribbon bulk resonance when the number of atoms in the tube unit cell is [Formula: see text], where [Formula: see text] is the number of atoms in the ribbon unit cell. Thus, an atlas of carbon nanotubes optical transitions can be mapped to an atlas of zigzag graphene nanoribbons.

We present a first principles study of the stability, and of the electronic and optical properties of graphene with nitrogen doped vacancies. Moreover, we use the vacancies as anchoring sites for Mg, Zn, Pd al Pt atoms and vary the concentration of defects. Decoration of the defects with metal atoms produces semi-metallic systems for any studied size of the cell, with linear bands crossing at the Fermi level. The peculiar electronic properties of massless Dirac fermions in graphene are hence kept, although with anisotropic Fermi velocities. New sharp peaks appear in the optical conductivity in the visible range, thus strongly enhancing the optical response of graphene.

The exotic electrodynamics properties of graphene come from the linearly dispersive electronic bands that host massless Dirac electrons. A similar behavior was predicted to manifest in freestanding silicene, the silicon counterpart of graphene, thereby envisaging a new route for silicon photonics. However, the access to silicene exploitation in photonics was hindered so far by the use of optically inappropriate substrates in experimentally realized silicene. Here we report on the optical conductivity of silicon nanosheets epitaxially grown on optically transparent Al 2 O 3 (0001) from a thickness of a few tens of nanometers down to the extreme two-dimensional (2D) limit. When a 2D regime is approached, a Dirac-like electrodynamics can be deduced from the observation of a low-energy optical conductivity feature owing to a silicene-based interfacing to the substrate.

We investigate electronic and optical properties of the topological Weyl semimetals TaAs, TaP, NbAs and NbP crystallizing in bct geometry by means of the ab initio density functional theory with spin-orbit interaction within the independent-particle approximation. The small energetical overlap of Ta5d or Nb4d derived conduction and valence bands leads to electron and/or hole pockets near the Fermi energy at the 24 Weyl nodes. The nodes give rise to two-(three-)dimensional Dirac cones for the W 1 (W 2 ) Weyl type. The band dispersion and occupation near the Weyl nodes determine the infrared optical properties. They are dominated by interband transitions, which lead to a deviation from the expected constant values of the imaginary part of the dielectric function. The resulting polarization anisotropy is also visible in the real part of the optical conductivity, whose lineshape deviates from the expected linearity. The details of the Weyl nodes are discussed in relation to recent ARPES results for TaAs and NbP, and compared with measured optical spectra for TaAs. The spectral features of the anisotropic and tilted Weyl fermions are restricted to low excitation energies above absorption onsets due to the band occupation.

Using ab initio density functional theory the band structure and the dielectric function of a bct Cd 3 As 2 crystal are calculated. We find a Dirac semimetal with two Dirac nodes k ± near the Γ point on the tetragonal axis. The bands near the Fermi level exhibit a linear behavior. The resulting Dirac cones are anisotropic and the electron-hole symmetry is destroyed along the tetragonal axis. Along this axis the symmetry-protected band linearity only exists in a small energy interval. The Dirac cones seemingly found by ARPES in a wider energy range are interpreted in terms of pseudo-linear bands. The behavior as 3D graphene-like material is traced back to As p orbital pointing to Cd vacancies, in directions which vary throughout the unit cell. Because of the Dirac nodes the dielectric functions (imaginary part) show a plateau for vanishing frequencies whose finite value is proportional to the Sommerfeld fine structure constant but varies with the light polarization. The consequences of the anisotropy of the Dirac cones are highlighted for the polarization dependence of the infrared optical conductivity.

The proton disorder in ice has a key role in several properties such as the growth mode, thermodynamical properties, and ferroelectricity. While structural phase transitions from proton disordered to proton ordered ices have been extensively studied, much less is known about their electronic and optical properties. Here, we present ab initio many body perturbation theory-based calculations of the electronic and optical properties of cubic ice at different levels of proton disorder. We compare our results with those from liquid water, that acts as an example of a fully (proton- and oxygen-)disordered system. We find that by increasing the proton disorder, a shrinking of the electronic gap occurs in ice, and it is smallest in the liquid water. Simultaneously, the excitonic binding energy decreases, so that the final optical gaps result to be almost independent on the degree of proton disorder. We explain these findings as an interplay between the local dipolar disorder and the electronic correlation.

Colloidal nanocrystals electronic energy levels are determined by strong size-dependent quantum confinement. Understanding the configuration of the energy levels of nanocrystal superlattices is vital in order to use them in heterostructures with other materials. We present first-principles studies of the optical absorbance of the group IV honeycomb crystals graphene, silicene, germanene, and tinene. We account for many-body effects on the optical properties by using the non-local hybrid functional HSE06. The optical absorption peaks are blueshifted due to quasiparticle corrections, while the influence on the low-frequency absorbance remains unchanged and reduces to a universal value related to the Sommerfeld fine structure constant. At the Dirac points spin-orbit interaction opens fundamental band gaps; parabolic bands with a very small effective mass emerge. Consequently, the low-frequency absorbance is modified with a spin-orbit-induced transparency region and an increase of the absorbance at the fundamental absorption edge.

Actually, most of the electric energy is being produced by fossil fuels and great is the search for viable alternatives. The most appealing and promising technology is photovoltaics. It will become truly mainstream when its cost will be comparable to other energy sources. One way is to significantly enhance device efficiencies, for example by increasing the number of band gaps in multijunction solar cells or by favoring charge separation in the devices. This can be done by using cells based on nanostructured semiconductors. In this paper, we will present ab-initio results of the structural, electronic and optical properties of (1) silicon and germanium nanoparticles embedded in wide band gap materials and (2) mixed silicon-germanium nanowires. We show that theory can help in understanding the microscopic processes important for devices performances. In particular, we calculated for embedded Si and Ge nanoparticles the dependence of the absorption threshold on size and oxidation, the role of crystallinity and, in some cases, the recombination rates, and we demonstrated that in the case of mixed nanowires, those with a clear interface between Si and Ge show not only a reduced quantum confinement effect but display also a natural geometrical separation between electron and hole.

Optical properties of aromatic chromophores are used to probe complex biological processes, yet how the environment tunes their optical properties is far from being fully understood. Here we present a method to calculate such properties on large-scale systems, like biologically relevant molecules in aqueous solution. Our approach is based on many-body perturbation theory combined with a quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) approach. We include quasiparticle and excitonic effects for the calculation of optical absorption spectra in a QM/MM scheme. We apply this scheme, together with the well-established TDDFT approach, to indole in water solution. Our calculations show that the solvent induces a red shift in the main spectral peak of indole, in quantitative agreement with the experiments, and they point to the relevance of both the electrostatic and geometrical origin of the shift.

In this paper, we give an overview of the state of the art in calculations of the electronic band structure and absorption spectra of water. After an introduction to the main theoretical and computational schemes used, we present results for the electronic and optical excitations of water. We focus mainly on liquid water, but spectroscopic properties of ice and vapor phase are also described. The applicability and the accuracy of first-principles methods are discussed, and results are critically presented.

We compare the results of ab initio calculations with measured reflection anisotropy spectra and show that strongly bound surface-state excitons occur on the clean diamond (100) surface. These excitons are found to have a binding energy close to 1 eV, the strongest ever observed at a semiconductor surface. Important electron-hole interaction effects on the line shape of the optical transitions above the surface-state gap are also found.
