The demand for broadband, room-temperature infrared, and terahertz (THz) detectors is rapidly increasing owing to crucial applications in telecommunications, security screening, nondestructive testing, and medical diagnostics. Current photodetectors face significant challenges, including high intrinsic dark currents and the necessity for cryogenic cooling, which limit their effectiveness in detecting low-energy photons. Here, we introduce a high-performance ultrabroadband photodetector operating at room temperature based on two-dimensional black arsenene (b-As) nanosheets. This device demonstrates responsivity across visible, near-infrared, and THz spectral ranges, with responsivities reaching 91.6 A/W at 520 nm, 6.3 A/W at 1550 nm, and 7.8 V/W at 0.27 THz. The exceptional THz responsivity is attributed to the use of plasma-wave rectification in antenna-integrated field-effect transistors with asymmetric antennas, enhancing light-matter interaction and facilitating nonlinear rectification within the two-dimensional electron gas of the transistor channel, achieving a voltage-dependent bipolar response. These advanced b-As-based photodetectors also enable secure THz communication through complex logic operations, achieving robust data encryption and high-performance signal processing.

Modern society and industrial development rely heavily on the availability of freshwater and minerals. Seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) has been widely adopted for freshwater supply, although many questions have arisen about its environmental sustainability owing to the disposal of hypersaline rejected solutions (brine). This scenario has accelerated significant developments towards the hybridization of SWRO with membrane distillation-crystallization (MD-MCr), which can extract water and minerals from spent brine. Nevertheless, the substantial specific energy consumption associated with MD-MCr remains a significant limitation. In this work, energy harvesting was secured from renewables by hotspots embodied in the membranes, implementing the revolutionary approach of brine mining via photothermal membrane crystallization (PhMCr). This method employs self-heating nanostructured interfaces under solar radiation to enhance water evaporation, creating a carefully controlled supersaturated environment responsible for the extraction of minerals. Photothermal mixed matrix photothermal membranes (MMMs) were developed by incorporating graphene oxide (GO) or carbon black (CB) into polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) solubilized in an eco-friendly solvent (i.e., triethyl phosphate (TEP)). MMMs were prepared using non-solvent-induced phase separation (NIPS). The effect of GO or GB on the morphology of MMMs and the photothermal behavior was examined. Light-to-heat conversion was used in PhMCr experiments to facilitate the evaporation of water from the SWRO brine to supersaturation, leading to sodium chloride (NaCl) nucleation and crystallization. Overall, the results indicate exciting perspectives of PhMCr in brine valorization for a sustainable desalination industry.

Methanol (CH 3 OH) oxidation offers a promising avenue for transitioning to clean energy, particularly in the field of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). However, the development of efficient and cost-effective catalysts for the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) remains a critical challenge. Herein, we report the exceptional electrocatalytic activity and stability of Ni 3 Sn 4 toward MOR in acidic media, achieving a performance comparable to that of commercial Pt/C catalysts. Our catalyst design incorporates Earth-abundant Ni and Sn elements, resulting in a material that is 1800 times more cost-effective than Pt/C. Density functional theory (DFT) modeling substantiates our experimental findings, shedding light on the favorable reaction mechanisms and kinetics on the Ni 3 Sn 4 surface. Additionally, the as-synthesized Ni 3 Sn 4 electrocatalyst demonstrates commendable durability, maintaining its electrocatalytic activity even after prolonged exposure to harsh acidic conditions.

Nonmagnetic chiral crystals are a new class of systems hosting Kramers-Weyl Fermions, arising from the combination of structural chirality, spin-orbit coupling (SOC), and time-reversal symmetry. These materials exhibit nontrivial Fermi surfaces with SOC-induced Chern gaps over a wide energy range, leading to exotic transport and optical properties. In this study, we investigate the electronic structure and transport properties of CdAs 2 , a newly reported chiral material. We use synchrotron-based angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory (DFT) to determine the Fermiology of the (110)-terminated CdAs 2 crystal. Our results, together with complementary magnetotransport measurements, suggest that CdAs 2 is a promising candidate for novel topological properties protected by the structural chirality of the system. Our work sheds light on the details of the Fermi surface and topology for this chiral quantum material, providing useful information for engineering novel spintronic and optical devices based on quantized chiral charges, negative longitudinal magnetoresistance, and nontrivial Chern numbers.

In recent years, the correlation between the existence of topological electronic states in materials and their catalytic activity has gained increasing attention, due to the exceptional electron conductivity and charge carrier mobility exhibited by quantum materials. However, the physicochemical mechanisms ruling catalysis with quantum materials are not fully understood. Here, we investigate the chemical reactivity, ambient stability, and catalytic activity of the topological nodal-line semimetal AuSn 4 . Our findings reveal that the surface of AuSn 4 is prone to oxidation, resulting in the formation of a nanometric SnO 2 skin. This surface oxidation significantly enhances the material's performance as a catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction in acidic environments. We demonstrate that the peculiar atomic structure of oxidized AuSn 4 enables the migration of hydrogen atoms through the Sn-O layer with a minimal energy barrier of only 0.19 eV. Furthermore, the Volmer step becomes exothermic in the presence of Sn vacancies or tin-oxide skin, as opposed to being hindered in the pristine sample, with energy values of -0.62 and -1.66 eV, respectively, compared to the +0.46 eV energy barrier in the pristine sample. Our model also suggests that oxidized AuSn 4 can serve as a catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction in alkali media. Additionally, we evaluate the material's suitability for the carbon dioxide reduction reaction, finding that the presence of topologically protected electronic states enhances the migration of hydrogen atoms adsorbed on the catalyst to carbon dioxide.

The zero-magnetic-field nonlinear Hall effect (NLHE) refers to the second-order transverse current induced by an applied alternating electric field; it indicates the topological properties of inversion-symmetry-breaking crystals. Despite several studies on the NLHE induced by the Berry-curvature dipole in Weyl semimetals, the direct current conversion by rectification is limited to very low driving frequencies and cryogenic temperatures. The nonlinear photoresponse generated by the NLHE at room temperature can be useful for numerous applications in communication, sensing, and photodetection across a high bandwidth. In this study, observations of the second-order NLHE in type-II Dirac semimetal CoTe 2 under time-reversal symmetry are reported. This is determined by the disorder-induced extrinsic contribution on the broken-inversion-symmetry surface and room-temperature terahertz rectification without the need for semiconductor junctions or bias voltage. It is shown that remarkable photoresponsivity over 0.1 A W -1 , a response time of approximately 710 ns, and a mean noise equivalent power of 1 pW Hz -1/2 can be achieved at room temperature. The results open a new pathway for low-energy photon harvesting via nonlinear rectification induced by the NLHE in strongly spin-orbit-coupled and inversion-symmetry-breaking systems, promising a considerable impact in the field of infrared/terahertz photonics., (© 2023 The Authors. Hydrogen production from methanol decomposition to syngas (H 2 + CO) is a promising alternative route for clean energy transition. One major challenge is related to the quest for stable, cost-effective, and selective catalysts operating below 400 °C. We illustrate an investigation of the surface reactivity of a Ni 3 Sn 4 catalyst working at 250 °C, by combining density functional theory, operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. We discovered that the catalytic reaction is driven by surface tin-oxide phases, which protects the underlying Ni atoms from irreversible chemical modifications, increasing the catalyst durability. Moreover, we found that Sn content plays a key role in enhancing the H 2 selectivity, with respect to secondary products such as CO 2 . These findings open new perspectives for the engineering of scalable and low-cost catalysts for hydrogen production.

Magnetic materials exhibiting topological Dirac fermions are attracting significant attention for their promising technological potential in spintronics. In these systems, the combined effect of the spin-orbit coupling and magnetic order enables the realization of novel topological phases with exotic transport properties, including the anomalous Hall effect and magneto-chiral phenomena. Herein, we report experimental signature of topological Dirac antiferromagnetism in TaCoTe 2 via angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and first-principles density functional theory calculations. In particular, we find the existence of spin-orbit coupling-induced gaps at the Fermi level, consistent with the manifestation of a large intrinsic nonlinear Hall conductivity. Remarkably, we find that the latter is extremely sensitive to the orientation of the Néel vector, suggesting TaCoTe 2 as a suitable candidate for the realization of non-volatile spintronic devices with an unprecedented level of intrinsic tunability.

The recent advent of two-dimensional (2D) materials has had a ground-breaking impact on science and technology. To exploit in technology their unique thickness-dependent physicochemical properties, the large-scale production of 2D materials is mandatory, but it represents an open challenge still due to various pitfalls and severe limitations including the toxicity of state-of-the-art solvents. Thus, liquid-phase exfoliation based on green and bioderived solvents represents an ideal methodology for massive production. This is particularly crucial for introducing 2D materials in technological applications such as the production of drinking water and agri-food industrial processes. Here, we assessed the production of 2D nanosheets (specifically, graphene, WS 2 , MoS 2 ) with liquid-phase exfoliation assisted by eco-friendly solvents, with a comparative evaluation of green solvents in terms of the yield and, moreover, the aspect ratio, defectivity, and crystalline quality of the produced nanosheets. In particular, we focus on the most promising green solvents in terms of the yield and the crystalline quality of the produced nanosheets: Polarclean, Iris, and Cyrene, which were compared with acetone/water mixtures, isopropyl alcohol (IPA), triethanolamine (TEA), aqueous solutions of urea, and an ethanol/water mixture as well as two toxic solvents largely used for the production of 2D nanosheets: N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF). Remarkably, the density of defects was particularly low in the liquid-phase exfoliation with Polarclean, as indicated by the Raman spectrum of graphene, with the I(D)/I(G) ratio below 0.1. Furthermore, Polarclean and Iris also enable ink-jet printing with functional inks of 2D materials based on green solvents due to their low dynamic viscosity at room temperature.

The exotic electronic properties of topological semimetals (TSs) have opened new pathways for innovative photonic and optoelectronic devices, especially in the highly pursuit terahertz (THz) band. However, in most cases Dirac fermions lay far above or below the Fermi level, thus hindering their successful exploitation for the low-energy photonics. Here, low-energy type-II Dirac fermions in kitkaite (NiTeSe) for ultrasensitive THz detection through metal-topological semimetal-metal heterostructures are exploited. Furthermore, a heterostructure combining two Dirac materials, namely, graphene and NiTeSe, is implemented for a novel photodetector exhibiting a responsivity as high as 1.22 A W -1 , with a response time of 0.6 µs, a noise-equivalent power of 18 pW Hz -0.5 , with outstanding stability in the ambient conditions. The control of heat at the nanoscale via the excitation of localized surface plasmons in nanoparticles (NPs) irradiated with light holds great potential in several fields (cancer therapy, catalysis, desalination). To date, most thermoplasmonic applications are based on Ag and Au NPs, whose cost of raw materials inevitably limits the scalability for industrial applications requiring large amounts of photothermal NPs, as in the case of desalination plants. On the other hand, alternative nanomaterials proposed so far exhibit severe restrictions associated with the insufficient photothermal efficacy in the visible, the poor chemical stability, and the challenging scalability. Here, it is demonstrated the outstanding potential of NiSe and CoSe topological nodal-line semimetals for thermoplasmonics. The anisotropic dielectric properties of NiSe and CoSe activate additional plasmonic resonances. Specifically, NiSe and CoSe NPs support multiple localized surface plasmons in the optical range, resulting in a broadband matching with sunlight radiation spectrum. Finally, it is validated the proposed NiSe and CoSe-based thermoplasmonic platform by implementing solar-driven membrane distillation by adopting NiSe and CoSe nanofillers embedded in a polymeric membrane for seawater desalination. Remarkably, replacing Ag with NiSe and CoSe for solar membrane distillation increases the transmembrane flux by 330% and 690%, respectively. Correspondingly, costs of raw materials are also reduced by 24 and 11 times, respectively. Freshwater scarcity is a vital societal challenge related to climate change, population pressure, and agricultural and industrial demands. Therefore, sustainable desalination/purification of salty/contaminated water for human uses is particularly relevant. Membrane distillation is an emerging hybrid thermal-membrane technology with the potential to overcome the drawbacks of conventional desalination by a synergic exploitation of the water-energy nexus. Although membrane distillation is considered a green technology, efficient heat management remains a critical concern affecting the cost of the process and hindering its viability at large scale. A multidisciplinary approach that involves materials chemistry, physical chemistry, chemical engineering, and materials and polymer science is required to solve this problem. The combination of solar energy with membrane distillation is considered a potentially feasible low-cost approach for providing high-quality freshwater with a low carbon footprint. In particular, recent discoveries about efficient light-to-heat conversion in nanomaterials have opened unprecedented perspectives for the implementation of sunlight-based renewable energy in membrane distillation. The integration of nanofillers enabling photothermal effects into membranes has been demonstrated to be able to significantly enhance the energy efficiency without impacting on economic costs. Here, we provide a comprehensive overview on the state of the art, the opportunities, open challenges and pitfalls of the emerging field of solar-driven membrane distillation. We also assess the peculiar physicochemical properties and synthesis scalability of photothermal materials, as well as the strategies for their integration into polymeric nanocomposite membranes enabling efficient light-to-heat conversion and freshwater.

The knowledge of the thermal expansion coefficient is of crucial importance to prevent the poor performance of devices, especially when these are made up of several layers of different materials, as in the case of 2D heterostructures. Helium atom scattering is a suitable tool for the direct measurement of the surface thermal expansion coefficient of materials. This information can be obtained directly from the position of the helium diffraction peaks, which allows determining the surface lattice constant at different temperatures by merely applying Bragg's law. We present new data for PdTe 2 which confirm a trend observed for several 2D dichalcogenides, namely, that the in-plane lattice constant remains unchanged (within experimental error) in the temperature range of interest for applications, which enables setting an upper limit for the lateral thermal expansion coefficients of these materials.

Despite the considerable effort, fast and highly sensitive photodetection is not widely available at the low-photon-energy range (~meV) of the electromagnetic spectrum, owing to the challenging light funneling into small active areas with efficient conversion into an electrical signal. Here, we provide an alternative strategy by efficiently integrating and manipulating at the nanoscale the optoelectronic properties of topological Dirac semimetal PtSe 2 and its van der Waals heterostructures. Explicitly, we realize strong plasmonic antenna coupling to semimetal states near the skin-depth regime (λ/10 4 ), featuring colossal photoresponse by in-plane symmetry breaking. The observed spontaneous and polarization-sensitive photocurrent are correlated to strong coupling with the nonequilibrium states in PtSe 2 Dirac semimetal, yielding efficient light absorption in the photon range below 1.24 meV with responsivity exceeding ∼0.2 A/W and noise-equivalent power (NEP) less than ~38 pW/Hz 0.5 , as well as superb ambient stability. Here, we discuss the key features of electrocatalysis with mitrofanovite (Pt 3 Te 4 ), a recently discovered mineral with superb performances in hydrogen evolution reaction. Mitrofanovite is a layered topological metal with spin-polarized topological surface states with potential applications for spintronics. However, mitrofanovite is also an exceptional platform for electrocatalysis, with costs of the electrodes suppressed by 47% owing to the partial replacement of Pt with Te. Remarkably, the Tafel slope in nanostructured mitrofanovite is just 33 mV/dec, while reduced mitrofanovite has the same Tafel slope (36 mV/dec) as state-of-the-art electrodes of pure Pt. Mitrofanovite also affords surface stability and robustness to CO poisoning. Accordingly, these findings pave the way for the advent of mitrofanovite for large-scale hydrogen production.

Tin diselenide (SnSe 2 ) is a layered semiconductor with broad application capabilities in the fields of energy storage, photocatalysis, and photodetection. Here, we correlate the physicochemical properties of this van der Waals semiconductor to sensing applications for detecting chemical species (chemosensors) and millimeter waves (terahertz photodetectors) by combining experiments of high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy with density functional theory. The response of the pristine, defective, and oxidized SnSe 2 surface towards H 2 , H 2 O, H 2 S, NH 3 , and NO 2 analytes was investigated. Furthermore, the effects of the thickness were assessed for monolayer, bilayer, and bulk samples of SnSe 2 . The formation of a sub-nanometric SnO 2 skin over the SnSe 2 surface (self-assembled SnO 2 /SnSe 2 heterostructure) corresponds to a strong adsorption of all analytes. The formation of non-covalent bonds between SnO 2 and analytes corresponds to an increase of the magnitude of the transferred charge. The theoretical model nicely fits experimental data on gas response to analytes, validating the SnO 2 /SnSe 2 heterostructure as a suitable playground for sensing of noxious gases, with sensitivities of 0.43, 2.13, 0.11, 1.06 [ppm] -1 for H 2 , H 2 S, NH 3 , and NO 2, respectively. The corresponding limit of detection is 5 ppm, 10 ppb, 250 ppb, and 400 ppb for H 2 , H 2 S, NH 3 , and NO 2, respectively. Furthermore, SnSe 2 -based sensors are also suitable for fast large-area imaging applications at room temperature for millimeter waves in the THz range.

From its advent, high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS) has emerged as one of the most versatile tools in surface science. In the last few decades, HREELS was widely used for the fundamental study of (i) chemical reactions at the surfaces of model catalysts (mostly single crystals), (ii) lattice dynamics (phonons), (iii) surface plasmons and (iv) magnons. However, HREELS has experienced a continuous decay of the number of daily users worldwide so far, due to several factors. However, the rise of Dirac materials (graphene, topological insulators, Dirac semimetals) offers new perspectives for HREELS, due to its unique features enabling ultrasensitive detection of (i) chemical modifications at their surfaces, (ii) Kohn anomalies arising from electron-phonon coupling and (iii) novel plasmonic excitations associated to Dirac-cone fermions, as well as their eventual mutual interplay with other plasmon resonances related to topologically trivial electronic states. By selected case-study examples, here we show that HREELS can uniquely probe these phenomena in Dirac materials, thus validating its outstanding relevance and its irreplaceability in contemporary solid-state physics, thus paving the way for a renewed interest. In addition, recent technological upgrades enable the combination of HREELS as an add-on to photoemission apparatuses for parallel readout of energy and momentum of surface excitations. Open issues for theoretical modelling of HREELS related to the dependence on primary electron beam energy and scattering geometry are also critically presented.

Near-field microscopy discloses a peculiar potential to explore novel quantum state of matter at the nanoscale, providing an intriguing playground to investigate, locally, carrier dynamics or propagation of photoexcited modes as plasmons, phonons, plasmon-polaritons or phonon-polaritons. Here, we exploit a combination of hyperspectral time domain spectroscopy nano-imaging and detectorless scattering near-field optical microscopy, at multiple terahertz frequencies, to explore the rich physics of layered topological insulators as Bi 2 Se 3 and Bi 2 Te 2.2 Se 0.8 , hyperbolic materials with topologically protected surface states. By mapping the near-field scattering signal from a set of thin flakes of Bi 2 Se 3 and Bi 2 Te 2.2 Se 0.8 of various thicknesses, we shed light on the nature of the collective modes dominating their optical response in the 2-3 THz range. We capture snapshots of the activation of transverse and longitudinal optical phonons and reveal the propagation of sub-diffractional hyperbolic phonon-polariton modes influenced by the Dirac plasmons arising from the topological surface states and of bulk plasmons, prospecting new research directions in plasmonics, tailored nanophotonics, spintronics and quantum technologies., (© 2021. Due to their peculiar quasiparticle excitations, topological metals have high potential for applications in the fields of spintronics, catalysis, and superconductivity. Here, by combining spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, and density functional theory, we discover surface-termination-dependent topological electronic states in the recently discovered mitrofanovite Pt 3 Te 4 . Mitrofanovite crystal is formed by alternating, van der Waals bound layers of Pt 2 Te 2 and PtTe 2 . Our results demonstrate that mitrofanovite is a topological metal with termination-dependent (i) electronic band structure and (ii) spin texture. Despite their distinct electronic character, both surface terminations are characterized by electronic states exhibiting strong spin polarization with a node at the Γ point and sign reversal across the Γ point, indicating their topological nature and the possibility of realizing two distinct electronic configurations (both of them with topological features) on the surface of the same material.

By means of electrocatalytic tests, surface-science techniques and density functional theory, we unveil the physicochemical mechanisms ruling the electrocatalytic activity of recently discovered mitrofanovite (Pt 3 Te 4 ) mineral. Mitrofanovite represents a very promising electrocatalyst candidate for energy-related applications, with a reduction of costs by 47% compared to pure Pt and superior robustness to CO poisoning. We show that Pt 3 Te 4 is a weak topological metal with the Z 2 invariant, exhibiting electrical conductivity (∼4 × 10 6 S/m) comparable with pure Pt. In hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), the electrode based on bulk Pt 3 Te 4 shows a very small overpotential of 46 mV at 10 mA cm -2 and a Tafel slope of 36-49 mV dec -1 associated with the Volmer-Heyrovsky mechanism. The outstanding ambient stability of Pt 3 Te 4 also provides durability of the electrode and long-term stability of its efficient catalytic performances.

Two-dimensional (2D) magnets such as chromium trihalides CrX 3 (X = I, Br, Cl) represent a frontier for spintronics applications and, in particular, CrCl 3 has attracted research interest due its relative stability under ambient conditions without rapid degradation, as opposed to CrI 3 . Herein, mechanically exfoliated CrCl 3 flakes are characterized at the atomic scale and the electronic structures of pristine, oxidized, and defective monolayer CrCl 3 phases are investigated employing density functional theory (DFT) calculations, scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS), core level X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), and valence band XPS and ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS). As revealed by atomically resolved transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, the CrCl 3 flakes show spontaneous surface oxidation upon air exposure with an extrinsic long-range ordered oxidized O-CrCl 3 structure and amorphous chromium oxide formation on the edges of the flakes. XPS proves that CrCl 3 is thermally stable up to 200 °C having intrinsically Cl vacancy-defects whose concentration is tunable via thermal annealing up to 400 °C. DFT calculations, supported by experimental valence band analysis, indicate that pure monolayer (ML) CrCl 3 is an insulator with a band gap of 2.6 eV, while the electronic structures of oxidized and Cl defective phases of ML CrCl 3 , extrinsically emerging in exfoliated CrCl 3 flakes, show in-gap spin-polarized states and relevant modifications of the electronic band structures., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

The study of chemical processes on solid surfaces is a powerful tool to discover novel physicochemical concepts with direct implications for processes based on chemical reactions at surfaces, largely exploited by industry. Recent upgrades of experimental tools and computational capabilities, as well as the advent of two-dimensional materials, have opened new opportunities and challenges for surface science. In this Perspective, we highlight recent advances in application fields strictly connected to novel concepts emerging in surface science. Specifically, we show for selected case-study examples that surface oxidation can be unexpectedly beneficial for improving the efficiency in electrocatalysis (the hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction) and photocatalysis, as well as in gas sensing. Moreover, we discuss the adsorption-assisted mechanism in membrane distillation for seawater desalination, as well as the use of surface-science tools in the study of Li-ion batteries. In all these applications, surface-science methodologies (both experimental and theoretical) have unveiled new physicochemical processes, whose efficiency can be further tuned by controlling surface phenomena, thus paving the way for a new era for the investigation of surfaces and interfaces of nanomaterials. In addition, we discuss the role of surface scientists in contemporary condensed matter physics, taking as case-study examples specific controversial debates concerning unexpected phenomena emerging in nanosheets of layered materials, solved by adopting a surface-science approach.

The advent of topological semimetals enables the exploitation of symmetry-protected topological phenomena and quantized transport. Here, we present homogeneous rectifiers, converting high-frequency electromagnetic energy into direct current, based on low-energy Dirac fermions of topological semimetal-NiTe 2 , with state-of-the-art efficiency already in the first implementation. Explicitly, these devices display room-temperature photosensitivity as high as 251 mA W -1 at 0.3 THz in an unbiased mode, with a photocurrent anisotropy ratio of 22, originating from the interplay between the spin-polarized surface and bulk states. Device performances in terms of broadband operation, high dynamic range, as well as their high sensitivity, validate the immense potential and unique advantages associated to the control of nonequilibrium gapless topological states via built-in electric field, electromagnetic polarization and symmetry breaking in topological semimetals. These findings pave the way for the exploitation of topological phase of matter for high-frequency operations in polarization-sensitive sensing, communications and imaging.

Liquid-phase exfoliation is the most suitable platform for large-scale production of two-dimensional materials. One of the main open challenges is related to the quest of green and bioderived solvents to replace state-of-the-art dispersion media, which suffer several toxicity issues. Here, we demonstrate the suitability of methyl-5-(dimethylamino)-2-methyl-5-oxopentanoate (Rhodiasolv Polarclean) for sonication-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation of layered materials for the case-study examples of WS 2 , MoS 2 , and graphene. We performed a direct comparison, in the same processing conditions, with liquid-phase exfoliation using N -methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) solvent. The amount of few-layer flakes (with thickness <5 nm) obtained with Polarclean is increased by ∼350% with respect to the case of liquid-phase exfoliation using NMP, maintaining comparable values of the average lateral size, which even reaches ∼10 μm for the case of graphene produced by exfoliation in Polarclean, and of the yield (∼40%). Correspondingly, the density of defects is reduced by 1 order of magnitude by Polarclean-assisted exfoliation, as evidenced by the I (D)/ I (G) ratio in Raman spectra of graphene as low as 0.07 ± 0.01. Considering the various advantages of Polarclean over state-of-the-art solvents, including the absence of toxicity and its biodegradability, the validation of superior performances of Polarclean in liquid-phase exfoliation paves the way for sustainable large-scale production of nanosheets of layered materials and for extending their use in application fields to date inhibited by toxicity of solvents (e.g., agri-food industry and desalination), with a subsequent superb impact on the commercial potential of their technological applications., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest., (© 2020 American Chemical Society.)

Tin diselenide (SnSe 2 ) is a van der Waals semiconductor, which spontaneously forms a subnanometric SnO 2 skin once exposed to air. Here, by means of surface-science spectroscopies and density functional theory, we have investigated the charge redistribution at the SnO 2 -SnSe 2 heterojunction in both oxidative and humid environments. Explicitly, we find that the work function of the pristine SnSe 2 surface increases by 0.23 and 0.40 eV upon exposure to O 2 and air, respectively, with a charge transfer reaching 0.56 e - /SnO 2 between the underlying SnSe 2 and the SnO 2 skin. Remarkably, both pristine SnSe 2 and defective SnSe 2 display chemical inertness toward water, in contrast to other metal chalcogenides. Conversely, the SnO 2 -SnSe 2 interface formed upon surface oxidation is highly reactive toward water, with subsequent implications for SnSe 2 -based devices working in ambient humidity, including chemical sensors. Our findings also imply that recent reports on humidity sensing with SnSe 2 should be reinterpreted, considering the pivotal role of the oxide skin in the interaction with water molecules.

Room-temperature ferromagnetism in monolayer vanadium diselenide (VSe2) on graphite is the object of a controversial debate. Herein, we unveil the contribution from extrinsic factors to the magnetic properties of monolayer VSe2 by means of density functional theory. Specifically, we demonstrate that either intrinsic defects or the adsorption of molecules enhances ferromagnetic interactions. The expansion of the VSe2 lattice increases the magnetic moment on vanadium ions, whereas both compression and out-of-plane distortion withdraw magnetic moments. The exchange interactions between vanadium ions and magnetic defects (vacancies and impurities) in the surface and subsurface layers of the substrate are able to turn the unstable two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetism into stable three-dimensional (3D) ferromagnetism. Definitely, the combination of effects related to chemisorption, substrate-induced distortion and magnetic defects of the substrate could enhance or suppress ferromagnetism in monolayer VSe2.

Via experiments performed by varying the doping level of single-layer mechanically exfoliated MoS 2 via post exfoliation thermal annealing in the 200-300 °C temperature range, we study the power dependent room temperature (RT) photoluminescence (PL), which is dominated by A type excitons. The PL spectral yields of the as-exfoliated and annealed samples show sub-linear behaviour as a function of the excitation laser power. The PL signal of the 200 °C annealed sample is dominated by the charged exciton (trion) related peak, while the PL signal of the 300 °C annealed sample is dominated by the neutral exciton related peak, and the PL spectral weight of excitons is tunable in this temperature range. The PL signal increase due to annealing and the intensity ratio of the A type excitons are related, showing a hyperbolic tangent trend. We directly quantitatively demonstrate the one-to-one correlation of the RT resonant Raman (632.8 nm) integrated spectral intensity with the corresponding PL spectral yield, providing experimental evidence of the exciton-phonon coupling effect. The in-plane E 2g 1 Raman mode exhibits strong coupling with A excitons, while the out-of-plane A 1g Raman mode does not. This is an indication of the in-plane spatial symmetry of the A excitons.

Emergent topological Dirac semimetals afford fresh pathways for optoelectronics, although device implementation has been elusive to date. Specifically, palladium ditelluride (PdTe 2 ) combines the capabilities provided by its peculiar band structure, with topologically protected electronic states, with advantages related to the occurrence of high-mobility charge carriers and ambient stability. Here, we demonstrate large photogalvanic effects with high anisotropy at terahertz frequency in PdTe 2 -based devices. A responsivity of 10 A/W and a noise-equivalent power lower than 2 pW/Hz 0.5 are achieved at room temperature, validating the suitability of PdTe 2 -based devices for applications in photosensing, polarization-sensitive detection, and large-area fast imaging. By means of experiments and theory, the gas-sensing properties of tin diselenide (SnSe 2 ) were elucidated. We discover that, while the stoichiometric single crystal is chemically inert even in air, the nonstoichiometric sample assumes a subnanometric SnO 2 surface oxide layer once exposed to ambient atmosphere. The presence of Se vacancies induces the formation of a metastable SeO 2 -like layer, which is finally transformed into a SnO 2 skin. Remarkably, the self-assembled SnO 2 /SnSe 2-x heterostructure is particularly efficient in gas sensing, whereas the stoichiometric SnSe 2 sample does not show sensing properties. Congruently with the theoretical model, direct sensing tests carried out on SnO 2 /SnSe 2- x at an operational temperature of 150 °C provided sensitivities of (1.06 ± 0.03) and (0.43 ± 0.02) [ppm] -1 for NO 2 and H 2 , respectively, in dry air. The corresponding calculated limits of detection are (0.36 ± 0.01) and (3.6 ± 0.1) ppm for NO 2 and H 2 , respectively. No detectable changes in gas-sensing performances are observed in a time period extended above six months. Our results pave the way for a novel generation of ambient-stable gas sensor based on self-assembled heterostructures formed taking advantage on the natural interaction of substoichiometric van der Waals semiconductors with air.

Magnetic crystals formed by 2D layers interacting by weak van der Waals forces are currently a hot research topic. When these crystals are thinned to nanometric size, they can manifest strikingly different magnetic behavior compared to the bulk form. This can be the result of, for example, quantum electronic confinement effects, the presence of defects, or pinning of the crystallographic structure in metastable phases induced by the exfoliation process. In this work, an investigation of the magnetism of micromechanically cleaved CrCl 3 flakes with thickness >10 nm is performed. These flakes are characterized by superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry, surface-sensitive X-ray magnetic circular dichroism, and spatially resolved magnetic force microscopy. The results highlight an enhancement of the CrCl 3 antiferromagnetic interlayer interaction that appears to be independent of the flake size when the thickness is tens of nanometers. The estimated exchange field is 9 kOe, representing an increase of ≈900% compared to the one of the bulk crystals. This effect can be attributed to the pinning of the high-temperature monoclinic structure, as recently suggested by polarized Raman spectroscopy investigations in thin (8-35 nm) CrCl 3 flakes., (© 2020 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The excitation spectrum in the region of the intraband (Dirac plasmon) and interband ( π plasmon) plasmons in graphene/Pt-skin terminated Pt 3 Ni(111) is reproduced by using an ab-initio method and an empirical model. The results of both methods are compared with experimental data. We discover that metallic screening by the Pt layer converts the square-root dispersion of the Dirac plasmon into a linear acoustic-like plasmon dispersion. In the long-wavelength limit, the Pt d electron excitations completely quench the π plasmon in graphene at about 4.1 eV, that is replaced by a broad peak at about 6 eV. Owing to a rather large graphene/Pt-skin separation (≈3.3 Å), the graphene/Pt-skin hybridization becomes weak at larger wave vectors, so that the π plasmon is recovered with a dispersion as in a free-standing graphene.

We predict the existence of a novel long-lived gapless plasmon mode in a type-II Dirac semimetal (DSM). This gapless mode arises from the out-of-phase oscillations of the density fluctuations in the electron and the hole pockets of a type-II DSM. It originates beyond a critical wave vector along the direction of the tilt axis, owing to the momentum separation of the electron and hole pockets. A similar out-of-phase plasmon mode arises in other multicomponent charged fluids as well, but generally, it is Landau damped and lies within the particle-hole continuum. In the case of a type-II DSM, the open Fermi surface prohibits low-energy finite momentum single-particle excitations, creating a "gap" in the particle-hole continuum. The gapless plasmon mode lies within this particle-hole continuum gap and, thus, it is protected from Landau damping.

Recent years have witnessed rapid progresses made in the photoelectric performance of two-dimensional materials represented by graphene, black phosphorus, and transition metal dichalcogenides. Despite significant efforts, a photodetection technique capable for longer wavelength, higher working temperature as well as fast responsivity, is still facing huge challenges due to a lack of best among bandgap, dark current, and absorption ability. Exploring topological materials with nontrivial band transport leads to peculiar properties of quantized phenomena such as chiral anomaly, and magnetic-optical effect, which enables a novel feasibility for an advanced optoelectronic device working at longer wavelength. In this work, the direct generation of photocurrent at low energy terahertz (THz) band at room temperature is implemented in a planar metal-PtTe 2 -metal structure. The results show that the THz photodetector based on PtTe 2 with bow-tie-type planar contacts possesses a high photoresponsivity (1.6 A W -1 without bias voltage) with a response time less than 20 µs, while the PtTe 2 -graphene heterostructure-based detector can reach responsivity above 1.4 kV W -1 and a response time shorter than 9 µs. Remarkably, it is already exploitable for large area imaging applications. By using high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy and density functional theory, we have studied the interaction of carbon monoxide with a defected graphene sheet. Both experiments and theory indicate that unsaturated C atoms at vacancies are able to capture carbon monoxide at room temperature. Definitely, the sequestration of carbon monoxide at carbon vacancies implies the formation of a weak C-O-C bond, evidenced by its peculiar vibrational energy of 150 meV (1209 cm-1). We also show that, by tuning the density of vacancies, it is possible to obtain a selective CO adsorption at vacancies without intercalation under the graphene cover. Captured CO molecules are stably adsorbed up to a temperature of 500 K. These findings represent the initial step toward the development of processes for the graphene-mediated partial sequestration and selective oxidation of CO.

Chemical doping of bulk black phosphorus is a well-recognized way to reduce surface oxidation and degradation. Here, we report on the fabrication of terahertz frequency detectors consisting of an antenna-coupled field-effect transistor (FET) with an active channel of Se-doped black phosphorus. Our devices show a maximum room-temperature hole mobility of 1780 cm2 V-1 s-1 in a SiO2-encapsulated FET. A room-temperature responsivity of 3 V W-1 was observed, with a noise-equivalent power of 7 nW Hz-1/2 at 3.4 THz, comparable with the state-of-the-art room-temperature photodetectors operating in the same frequency range. The inclusion of Se dopants in the growth process of black phosphorus crystals enables the optimization of the transport and optical performances of FETs in the far-infrared with a high potential for the development of BP-based electro-optical devices. We also demonstrate that the flake thickness can be tuned according to the target application. Specifically, thicker flakes (>80 nm) are suitable for applications in which high mobility and high speed are essential, thinner flakes (<10 nm) are more appropriate for applications requiring high on/off current ratios, while THz photodetection is optimal with flakes 30-40 nm thick, due to the larger carrier density tunability.

By means of momentum-resolved electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) coupled with scanning transmission electron microscopy, we have studied the dispersion relation of interband plasmonic modes in the ultraviolet in black phosphorus. We find that the dispersion of the interband plasmons is anisotropic. Experimental results are reproduced by density functional theory, by taking into account both the anisotropy of the single-particle response function, arising from the anisotropic band structure, and the damping. Moreover, our theoretical model also indicates the presence of low-energy excitations in the near-infrared that are selectively active in the armchair direction, whose existence has been experimentally validated by high-resolution EELS (HREELS) in reflection mode.

Transition-metal dichalcogenides showing type-II Dirac fermions are emerging as innovative materials for nanoelectronics. However, their excitation spectrum is mostly unexplored yet. By means of high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy and density functional theory, here, we identify the collective excitations of type-II Dirac fermions (3D Dirac plasmons) in PtTe&#95;{2} single crystals. The observed plasmon energy in the long-wavelength limit is ∼0.5  eV, which makes PtTe&#95;{2} suitable for near-infrared optoelectronic applications. We also demonstrate that interband transitions between the two Dirac bands in PtTe&#95;{2} give rise to additional excitations at ∼1 and ∼1.4  eV. Our results are crucial to bringing to fruition type-II Dirac semimetals in optoelectronics.

At terahertz (THz) frequencies, scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) based on continuous wave sources mostly relies on cryogenic and bulky detectors, which represents a major constraint for its practical application. Here, we devise a THz s-SNOM system that provides both amplitude and phase contrast and achieves nanoscale (60-70nm) in-plane spatial resolution. It features a quantum cascade laser that simultaneously emits THz frequency light and senses the backscattered optical field through a voltage modulation induced inherently through the self-mixing technique. We demonstrate its performance by probing a phonon-polariton-resonant CsBr crystal and doped black phosphorus flakes.

Single- and few-layered InSe flakes are produced by the liquid-phase exfoliation of β-InSe single crystals in 2-propanol, obtaining stable dispersions with a concentration as high as 0.11 g L -1 . Ultracentrifugation is used to tune the morphology, i.e., the lateral size and thickness of the as-produced InSe flakes. It is demonstrated that the obtained InSe flakes have maximum lateral sizes ranging from 30 nm to a few micrometers, and thicknesses ranging from 1 to 20 nm, with a maximum population centered at ≈5 nm, corresponding to 4 Se-In-In-Se quaternary layers. It is also shown that no formation of further InSe-based compounds (such as In 2 Se 3 ) or oxides occurs during the exfoliation process. The potential of these exfoliated-InSe few-layer flakes as a catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is tested in hybrid single-walled carbon nanotubes/InSe heterostructures. The dependence of the InSe flakes' morphologies, i.e., surface area and thickness, on the HER performances is highlighted, achieving the best efficiencies with small flakes offering predominant edge effects. Herein, we explore the main features and the prospect of plasmonics with two-dimensional semiconductors. Plasmonic modes in each class of van der Waals semiconductors have their own peculiarities, along with potential technological capabilities. Plasmons of transition-metal dichalcogenides share features typical of graphene, due to their honeycomb structure, but with damping processes dominated by intraband rather than interband transitions, unlike graphene. Spin-orbit coupling strongly affects the plasmonic spectrum of buckled honeycomb lattices (silicene and germanene), while the anisotropic lattice of phosphorene determines different propagation of plasmons along the armchair and zigzag directions. Black phosphorus is also a suitable material for ultrafast plasmonics, for which the active plasmonic response can be initiated by photoexcitation with femtosecond pulses. We also review existing applications of plasmonics with two-dimensional materials in the fields of thermoplasmonics, biosensing, and plasma-wave Terahertz detection. Finally, we consider the capabilities of van der Waals heterostructures for innovative low-loss plasmonic devices.

Among the various two-dimensional semiconductors, indium selenide has recently triggered the interest of scientific community, due to its band gap matching the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum, with subsequent potential applications in optoelectronics and especially in photodetection. In this feature article, we discuss the main issues in the synthesis, the ambient stability and the application capabilities of this novel class of two-dimensional semiconductors, by evidencing open challenges and pitfalls. In particular, we evidence how the growth of single crystals with reduced amount of Se vacancies is crucial in the road map for the exploitation of indium selenide in technology through ambient-stable nanodevices with outstanding values of both mobility of charge carriers and ON/OFF ratio. The surface chemical reactivity of the InSe surface, as well as applications in the fields of broadband photodetection, flexible electronics and solar energy conversion are also discussed., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Near-field imaging with terahertz (THz) waves is emerging as a powerful technique for fundamental research in photonics and across physical and life sciences. Spatial resolution beyond the diffraction limit can be achieved by collecting THz waves from an object through a small aperture placed in the near-field. However, light transmission through a sub-wavelength size aperture is fundamentally limited by the wave nature of light. Here, we conceive a novel architecture that exploits inherently strong evanescent THz field arising within the aperture to mitigate the problem of vanishing transmission. The sub-wavelength aperture is originally coupled to asymmetric electrodes, which activate the thermo-electric THz detection mechanism in a transistor channel made of flakes of black-phosphorus or InAs nanowires. The proposed novel THz near-field probes enable room-temperature sub-wavelength resolution coherent imaging with a 3.4 THz quantum cascade laser, paving the way to compact and versatile THz imaging systems and promising to bridge the gap in spatial resolution from the nanoscale to the diffraction limit.

Thermoplasmonic effects notably improve the efficiency of vacuum membrane distillation, an economically sustainable tool for high-quality seawater desalination. Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes filled with spherical silver nanoparticles are used, whose size is tuned for the aim. Topological insulators are a promising class of materials for applications in the field of spintronics. New perspectives in this field can arise from interfacing metal-organic molecules with the topological insulator spin-momentum locked surface states, which can be perturbed enhancing or suppressing spintronics-relevant properties such as spin coherence. Here we show results from an angle-resolved photemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) study of the prototypical cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc)/Bi2Se3 interface. We demonstrate that that the hybrid interface can act on the topological protection of the surface and bury the Dirac cone below the first quintuple layer.

By means of a combination of surface-science spectroscopies and theory, we investigate the mechanisms ruling the catalytic role of epitaxial graphene (Gr) grown on transition-metal substrates for the production of hydrogen from water. Water decomposition at the Gr/metal interface at room temperature provides a hydrogenated Gr sheet, which is buckled and decoupled from the metal substrate. We evaluate the performance of Gr/metal interface as a hydrogen storage medium, with a storage density in the Gr sheet comparable with state-of-the-art materials (1.42 wt %). Moreover, thermal programmed reaction experiments show that molecular hydrogen can be released upon heating the water-exposed Gr/metal interface above 400 K. The Gr hydro/dehydrogenation process might be exploited for an effective and eco-friendly device to produce (and store) hydrogen from water, i.e., starting from an almost unlimited source.

The possibility to intercalate noble gas atoms below epitaxial graphene monolayers coupled with the instability at high temperature of graphene on the surface of certain metals has been exploited to produce Ar-filled graphene nanosized blisters evenly distributed on the bare Ni(111) surface. We have followed in real time the self-assembling of the nanoblisters during the thermal annealing of the Gr/Ni(111) interface loaded with Ar and characterized their morphology and structure at the atomic scale. The nanoblisters contain Ar aggregates compressed at high pressure arranged below the graphene monolayer skin that is decoupled from the Ni substrate and sealed only at the periphery through stable C-Ni bonds. Their in-plane truncated triangular shapes are driven by the crystallographic directions of the Ni surface. The nonuniform strain revealed along the blister profile is explained by the inhomogeneous expansion of the flexible graphene lattice that adjusts to envelop the Ar atom stacks.

The ability to convert light into an electrical signal with high efficiencies and controllable dynamics, is a major need in photonics and optoelectronics. In the Terahertz (THz) frequency range, with its exceptional application possibilities in high data rate wireless communications, security, night-vision, biomedical or video-imaging and gas sensing, detection technologies providing efficiency and sensitivity performances that can be "engineered" from scratch, remain elusive. Here, by exploiting the inherent electrical and thermal in-plane anisotropy of a flexible thin flake of black-phosphorus (BP), we devise plasma-wave, thermoelectric and bolometric nano-detectors with a selective, switchable and controllable operating mechanism. All devices operates at room-temperature and are integrated on-chip with planar nanoantennas, which provide remarkable efficiencies through light-harvesting in the strongly sub-wavelength device channel. The achieved selective detection (∼5-8 V/W responsivity) and sensitivity performances (signal-to-noise ratio of 500), are here exploited to demonstrate the first concrete application of a phosphorus-based active THz device, for pharmaceutical and quality control imaging of macroscopic samples, in real-time and in a realistic setting.

Topological insulators (TIs) represent a novel quantum state of matter, characterized by edge or surface-states, showing up on the topological character of the bulk wave functions. Allowing electrons to move along their surface, but not through their inside, they emerged as an intriguing material platform for the exploration of exotic physical phenomena, somehow resembling the graphene Dirac-cone physics, as well as for exciting applications in optoelectronics, spintronics, nanoscience, low-power electronics, and quantum computing. Investigation of topological surface states (TSS) is conventionally hindered by the fact that in most of experimental conditions the TSS properties are mixed up with those of bulk-states. Here, we activate, probe, and exploit the collective electronic excitation of TSS in the Dirac cone. By engineering Bi2Te(3-x)Sex stoichiometry, and by gating the surface of nanoscale field-effect-transistors, exploiting thin flakes of Bi2Te2.2Se0.8 or Bi2Se3, we provide the first demonstration of room-temperature terahertz (THz) detection mediated by overdamped plasma-wave oscillations on the "activated" TSS of a Bi2Te2.2Se0.8 flake. The reported detection performances allow a realistic exploitation of TSS for large-area, fast imaging, promising superb impacts on THz photonics.
