For many chemical reactions, it remains notoriously difficult to predict and experimentally determine the rates and branching ratios between different reaction channels. This is particularly the case for reactions involving short-lived intermediates, whose observation requires ultrafast methods. The UV photochemistry of bromoform (CHBr 3 ) is among the most intensely studied photoreactions. Yet, a detailed understanding of the chemical pathways leading to the production of atomic Br and molecular Br 2 fragments has proven challenging. In particular, the role of isomerization and/or roaming and their competition with direct C-Br bond scission has been a matter of continued debate. Here, gas-phase ultrafast megaelectronvolt electron diffraction (MeV-UED) is used to directly study structural dynamics in bromoform after single 267 nm photon excitation with femtosecond temporal resolution. The results show unambiguously that isomerization contributes significantly to the early stages of the UV photochemistry of bromoform. In addition to direct C-Br bond breaking within <200 fs, formation of iso-CHBr 3 (Br-CH-Br-Br) is observed on the same time scale and with an isomer lifetime of >1.1 ps. The branching ratio between direct dissociation and isomerization is determined to be 0.4 ± 0.2:0.6 ± 0.2, i.e., approximately 60% of molecules undergo isomerization within the first few hundred femtoseconds after UV excitation. The structure and time of formation of iso-CHBr 3 compare favorably with the results of an ab initio molecular dynamics simulation. The lifetime and interatomic distances of the isomer are consistent with the involvement of a roaming reaction mechanism.

Pulsed field ablation (PFA), a nonthermal ablative mechanism, has been proven to be effective and safe in clinical application. To date, PFA has been used for only atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation in limited clinical trials. The present study describes a case of paroxysmal AF in which mitral and cavotricuspid isthmus (CTI)-dependent atrial flutter was discovered incidentally during PFA operation and successfully ablated with PFA. This is the first medical record of PFA for AF combined with mitral and CTI atrial flutter. The present case report revealed that PFA can be independently used to treat complex arrhythmias, similar to radiofrequency (RF) ablation, without the need for assistance from other ablation methods. Concurrently, the present study, to the best of the authors' knowledge is the first to report a case using a point-to-point PFA ablation strategy for isthmus ablation. Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is acknowledged as a disease continuum. Despite catheter ablation being recommended as a primary therapy for AF, the high recurrence rates have tempered the initial enthusiasm. Insulin resistance (IR) has been established as an independent predictor for the onset of AF. However, the correlation between non-insulin-based IR indices and late AF recurrence in patients undergoing radiofrequency catheter ablation remains unknown., Methods: A retrospective cohort of 910 AF patients who underwent radiofrequency catheter ablation was included in the analysis. The primary endpoint was late AF recurrence during the follow-up period after a defined blank period. The relationship between non-insulin-based IR indices and the primary endpoint was assessed using multivariate Cox hazards regression models and restricted cubic splines (RCS). Additionally, the net reclassification improvement and integrated discrimination improvement index were calculated to further evaluate the additional predictive value of the four IR indices beyond established risk factors for the primary outcome., Results: During a median follow-up period of 12.00 months, 189 patients (20.77%) experienced late AF recurrence, which was more prevalent among patients with higher levels of IR. The multivariate Cox hazards regression analysis revealed a significant association between these IR indices and late AF recurrence. Among the four indices, METS-IR provided the most significant incremental effect on the basic model for predicting late AF recurrence. Multivariable-adjusted RCS curves illustrated a nonlinear correlation between METS-IR and late AF recurrence. In subgroup analysis, METS-IR exhibited a significant correlation with late AF recurrence in patients with diabetes mellitus (HR: 1.697, 95% CI 1.397 - 2.063, P < 0.001)., Conclusion: All the four non-insulin-based IR indices were significantly associated with late AF recurrence in patients undergoing radiofrequency catheter ablation. Ultrafast electron diffraction using MeV energy beams(MeV-UED) has enabled unprecedented scientific opportunities in the study of ultrafast structural dynamics in a variety of gas, liquid and solid state systems. Broad scientific applications usually pose different requirements for electron probe properties. Due to the complex, nonlinear and correlated nature of accelerator systems, electron beam property optimization is a time-taking process and often relies on extensive hand-tuning by experienced human operators. Algorithm based efficient online tuning strategies are highly desired. Here, we demonstrate multi-objective Bayesian active learning for speeding up online beam tuning at the SLAC MeV-UED facility. The multi-objective Bayesian optimization algorithm was used for efficiently searching the parameter space and mapping out the Pareto Fronts which give the trade-offs between key beam properties. Such scheme enables an unprecedented overview of the global behavior of the experimental system and takes a significantly smaller number of measurements compared with traditional methods such as a grid scan. This methodology can be applied in other experimental scenarios that require simultaneously optimizing multiple objectives by explorations in high dimensional, nonlinear and correlated systems., (© 2024. We present an experimental demonstration of ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) with THz-driven electron bunch compression and time-stamping that enables UED probes with improved temporal resolution. Through THz-driven longitudinal bunch compression, a compression factor of approximately four is achieved. Moreover, the time-of-arrival jitter between the compressed electron bunch and a pump laser pulse is suppressed by a factor of three. Simultaneously, the THz interaction imparts a transverse spatiotemporal correlation on the electron distribution, which we utilize to further enhance the precision of time-resolved UED measurements. We use this technique to probe single-crystal gold nanofilms and reveal transient oscillations in the THz near fields with a temporal resolution down to 50 fs. Background: Pulsed-field ablation (PFA) is a nonthermal method for achieving selective cell death with little inflammation response. However, there are no reports of PFA for septal reduction therapy (SRT)., Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness and safety of PFA for SRT., Methods: A novel transvenous intraseptal PFA method with 3-dimensional (3D) guidance was introduced in Yorkshire pigs. Electrocardiographic parameters, transthoracic echocardiography, and histopathology were used to evaluated., Results: The maximum injury diameter of intramyocardial PFA increased with electric field intensity. After PFA, bipolar electrogram amplitude and pacing threshold measured by the PFA electrodes significantly decreased (F = 6.945, P = .007) or increased (F = 5.842, P = .024), respectively. In the ablated septal region, motion amplitude and systolic wall thickening rate significantly decreased and remained at low levels (motion amplitude: F = 20.793, P = .000; systolic wall thickening rate: F = 14.343, P = .000); however, septal thickness did not significantly change after PFA (F = 1.503, P = .248). Histologic examination showed specific cardiomyocyte death with gradually increased hyperchromatic cytoplasm and nuclear pyknosis, without obvious inflammatory cell infiltration in acute phase. TUNEL stain for fragmented DNA showed extensively positive in the ablation region 24 hours after PFA. During PFA, no sustained ventricular arrhythmia or atrioventricular conduction block occurred., Conclusion: A novel intraseptal PFA method with 3D guidance was described. Intraseptal PFA resulted in effective myocardial injury and local hypokinesis without significant acute edema. Identifying multiple rival reaction products and transient species formed during ultrafast photochemical reactions and determining their time-evolving relative populations are key steps toward understanding and predicting photochemical outcomes. Yet, most contemporary ultrafast studies struggle with clearly identifying and quantifying competing molecular structures/species among the emerging reaction products. Here, we show that mega-electronvolt ultrafast electron diffraction in combination with ab initio molecular dynamics calculations offer a powerful route to determining time-resolved populations of the various isomeric products formed after UV (266 nm) excitation of the five-membered heterocyclic molecule 2(5 H )-thiophenone. This strategy provides experimental validation of the predicted high (∼50%) yield of an episulfide isomer containing a strained three-membered ring within ∼1 ps of photoexcitation and highlights the rapidity of interconversion between the rival highly vibrationally excited photoproducts in their ground electronic state.

Vertically stacked van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures exhibit unique electronic, optical, and thermal properties that can be manipulated by twist-angle engineering. However, the weak phononic coupling at a bilayer interface imposes a fundamental thermal bottleneck for future two-dimensional devices. Using ultrafast electron diffraction, we directly investigated photoinduced nonequilibrium phonon dynamics in MoS 2 /WS 2 at 4° twist angle and WSe 2 /MoSe 2 heterobilayers with twist angles of 7°, 16°, and 25°. We identified an interlayer heat transfer channel with a characteristic timescale of ~20 picoseconds, about one order of magnitude faster than molecular dynamics simulations assuming initial intralayer thermalization. Atomistic calculations involving phonon-phonon scattering suggest that this process originates from the nonthermal phonon population following the initial interlayer charge transfer and scattering. Our findings present an avenue for thermal management in vdW heterostructures by tailoring nonequilibrium phonon populations.

Background: The long-term success rate of nonparoxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) treated with pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) alone is not ideal. This may indicate atrial fibrosis as a major cause of recurrence. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the efficacy of left atrial substrate modification (LASM) by targeting low-voltage area., Methods: A total of 157 consecutive patients with drug-refractory nonparoxysmal AF who underwent radiofrequency ablation during hospitalization in the Third People's Hospital of Chengdu from April 2017 to August 2021 were prospectively included. Stepwise ablation was performed in two different orders: LASM first (n=53) and PVI first (n=104) group. All patients underwent ablation during AF, and the procedural endpoint was AF termination during ablation. In the LASM first group, LASM was performed first and if AF was terminated, PVI was not performed. Similarly, in the PVI first groups, LASM was performed if AF was not terminated. The primary outcome were AF termination and freedom from AF. The secondary outcome was adverse events. Cox regression analysis was used to define predictors of AF termination, and Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to assess differences between groups in AF freedom., Results: The baseline characteristics of the two groups were similar. At a median follow-up of 16 months, the 112 patients (39 in LASM first group and 73 in PVI first group) with AF termination had a higher success rate than the 45 patients who had no AF termination (78.6% vs. 57.8%; P<0.01). The AF termination rate (24/53, 45.3% vs. 12/104, 11.5%; P<0.01) and AF freedom (20/24, 83.3% vs. 7/12, 58.3%; P=0.13) by LASM alone was higher than PVI alone. There were 3 cases of heart failure and 1 case of stroke (4/53) in the LASM first group, and 1 case of pericardial tamponade, 5 cases of heart failure and 1 case of stroke (7/104) in the LASM first group (7.5% vs. 6.7%; P>0.05)., Conclusions: LASM provides higher immediate success and a slightly better long-term success rate compared to PVI. Patients who terminated AF were more likely to have AF freedom than those who did not. Understanding the source of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is crucial for determining their structural, degradational, and burial characteristics in lake sediments. Here, we used a sediment core to determine the changing sources and burial characteristics of 16 PAHs from Dianchi Lake, southwest China. The ∑ 16 PAH concentrations ranged from 105.10 to 1248.05 ng g -1 (448.97 ± 351.25 ng g -1 ), exhibiting a sharp increase since 1976. Our results showed that the depositional flux of PAHs has increased by approximately 3.72 times over the past 114 years (1895-2009). The C/N ratio, stable isotopes (δ 13 C org and δ 15 N), and n-alkanes data all indicated that allochthonous contributors of organic carbon have substantially increased since the 1970s, playing an important role in the increase in sedimentary PAHs. Positive matrix factorization indicated that petrogenic sources, coal and biomass combustion, and traffic emissions were the main sources of PAHs. The relationships between PAHs from different sources and total organic carbon (TOC) varied with the sorption characteristics. The effect of TOC on the absorption of high-molecular-weight aromatic PAHs from fossil fuels was significant. Understanding how microscopic spin configuration gives rise to exotic properties at the macroscopic length scale has long been pursued in magnetic materials 1-5 . One seminal example is the Einstein-de Haas effect in ferromagnets 1,6,7 , in which angular momentum of spins can be converted into mechanical rotation of an entire object. However, for antiferromagnets without net magnetic moment, how spin ordering couples to macroscopic movement remains elusive. Here we observed a seesaw-like rotation of reciprocal lattice peaks of an antiferromagnetic nanolayer film, whose gigahertz structural resonance exhibits more than an order-of-magnitude amplification after cooling below the Néel temperature. Using a suite of ultrafast diffraction and microscopy techniques, we directly visualize this spin-driven rotation in reciprocal space at the nanoscale. This motion corresponds to interlayer shear in real space, in which individual micro-patches of the film behave as coherent oscillators that are phase-locked and shear along the same in-plane axis. Using time-resolved optical polarimetry, we further show that the enhanced mechanical response strongly correlates with ultrafast demagnetization, which releases elastic energy stored in local strain gradients to drive the oscillators. Our work not only offers the first microscopic view of spin-mediated mechanical motion of an antiferromagnet but it also identifies a new route towards realizing high-frequency resonators 8,9 up to the millimetre band, so the capability of controlling magnetic states on the ultrafast timescale 10-13 can be readily transferred to engineering the mechanical properties of nanodevices., (© 2023. By designing a liquid crystal cell with comb electrode structure, the alignment modulation of nematic liquid crystal in the cell can be realized after the electric field is applied. In different orientation regions, the incident laser beam can deflect at different angles. At the same time, by changing the incident angle of the laser beam, the reflection modulation of the laser beam on the interface of the liquid crystal molecular orientation change can be realized. Based on the above discussion, we then demonstrate the modulation of liquid crystal molecular orientation arrays on nematicon pairs. In different orientation regions of liquid crystal molecules, nematicon pairs can exhibit various combinations of deflections, and these deflection angles are modulable under external fields. Deflection and modulation of nematicon pairs have potential applications in optical routing and optical communication.

Background: Many clinical studies have shown that sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) reduce cardiovascular risks, such as heart failure, myocardial infarction and cardiovascular death., Objective: To investigate the use of SGLT2i for the prevention of primary and secondary cardiovascular outcomes., Methods: Pubmed, Embase and Cochrane libraries databases were searched and meta-analysis was performed using Revman 5.4., Results: Eleven studies with a total of 34,058 cases were analyzed. SGLT2i significantly reduced major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in patients with prior myocardial infarction (MI) (OR 0.83, 95% CI 0.73-0.94, p = 0.004), no prior MI (OR 0. 82, 95% CI 0.74-0.90, p<0.0001), prior coronary atherosclerotic disease (CAD) (OR 0.82, 95% CI 0.73-0.93, p = 0.001) and no prior CAD (OR 0.82, 95% CI 0.76-0.91, p = 0.0002) compared with placebo. In addition, SGLT2i significantly reduced hospitalization due to heart failure (HF) in patients with prior MI (OR 0.69, 95% CI 0.55-0.87, p = 0.001), no prior MI (OR 0.63, 95% CI 0.55-0. 72, p<0.00001), prior CAD (OR 0.65, 95% CI 0.53-0.79, p<0.0001) and no prior CAD (OR 0.65, 95% CI 0.56-0.75, p<0.00001) compared with placebo. SGLT2i reduced cardiovascular mortality and all-cause mortality events. Background: Whether statins can reduce major cardiovascular adverse events (MACE) in patients with coronary artery spasm (CAS) is controversial. And most of the relevant research to date has been conducted in Asia., Methods: We systematically searched electronic databases for studies on the effect of statins on MACE in patients with CAS in Asia and published up to September 2022. We included data on MACE in a statin therapy patient group and a no-statin therapy control group. We then evaluated the effect of statin therapy on MACE in patients with CAS in Asia by meta-analysis and trial sequential analysis (TSA). All statistical analyses were performed using Stata 16.0 software and TSA software., Results: A total of 10 studies ( n = 9333 patients) were included in the final analysis. Meta-analysis showed that the use of statins had a significant effect on MACE in CAS patients (with RR, 0.70; 95% CI, 0.49-0.99), and the sensitivity analysis further confirmed this finding. Subgroup analysis suggested that the correlation between statin therapy and reduced MACE endpoint was stronger in Japanese patients and patients followed up for more than 4 years. Strong coupling between light and mechanical strain forms the foundation for next-generation optical micro- and nano-electromechanical systems. Such optomechanical responses in two-dimensional materials present novel types of functionalities arising from the weak van der Waals bond between atomic layers. Here, by using structure-sensitive megaelectronvolt ultrafast electron diffraction, we report the experimental observation of optically driven ultrafast in-plane strain in the layered group IV monochalcogenide germanium sulfide (GeS). Surprisingly, the photoinduced structural deformation exhibits strain amplitudes of order 0.1% with a 10 ps fast response time and a significant in-plane anisotropy between zigzag and armchair crystallographic directions. Rather than arising due to heating, experimental and theoretical investigations suggest deformation potentials caused by electronic density redistribution and converse piezoelectric effects generated by photoinduced electric fields are the dominant contributors to the observed dynamic anisotropic strains. Our observations define new avenues for ultrafast optomechanical control and strain engineering within functional devices.

One central challenge in understanding phonon thermal transport is a lack of experimental tools to investigate frequency-resolved phonon transport. Although recent advances in computation lead to frequency-resolved information, it is hindered by unknown defects in bulk regions and at interfaces. Here, a framework that can uncover microscopic phonon transport information in heterostructures is presented, integrating state-of-the-art ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) with advanced scientific machine learning (SciML). Taking advantage of the dual temporal and reciprocal-space resolution in UED, and the ability of SciML to solve inverse problems involving O ( 10 3 ) $\mathcal{O}({10^3})$ coupled Boltzmann transport equations, the frequency-dependent interfacial transmittance and frequency-dependent relaxation times of the heterostructure from the diffraction patterns are reliably recovered. The framework is applied to experimental Au/Si UED data, and a transport pattern beyond the diffuse mismatch model is revealed, which further enables a direct reconstruction of real-space, real-time, frequency-resolved phonon dynamics across the interface. Surface sediments and sediment core had been collected from Erhai Lake, Southwest China to study the concentrations, toxicity risks, and sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The average concentrations of Σ 16 PAHs, seven carcinogenic PAHs (carPAHs), and carcinogenic toxic equivalents (TEQ car ) in the surface sediments and sediment core were 1634.50 ± 488.56 ng g -1 and 436.72 ± 128.17 ng g -1 , 67.18-293.65 ng g -1 and 91.07-265.90 ng g -1 , and 34.89 ± 13.17 ng g -1 and 36.99 ± 7.52 ng g -1 , respectively. The Σ 16 PAHs and carPAHs concentrations in surface sediments were higher in the southern lake. The Σ 16 PAHs and TEQ car in the sediment core peaked in the 2010s and 1980s. The spatiotemporal variations in TEQ car and carPAHs were similar. Positive matrix factorization revealed that traffic emissions contributed 35.71 % of the TEQ car , whereas coal and biomass combustion contributed 12.89 % in the surface sediments. The contribution of gasoline and fossil fuel to TEQ car significantly increased from 19.2 % (1890s) to 66.5 % (1990s), that of benz[a]pyrene (coal combustion) decreased, and those of benz[b]fluoranthene and indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene (petroleum combustion and traffic emissions) increased from 1.92 % to 3.93 % and from 1.54 % to 2.52 % in the sediment cores, respectively, owing to changes in energy consumption., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest We declare that we do not have any commercial or associative interest that represents a conflict of interest in connection with the work submitted., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Ltd. Hierarchical domain structures associated with oxygen octahedra tilting patterns were observed in lead-free (Bi 1/2 Na 1/2 )TiO 3 ceramics using aberration-corrected high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Three types of domains are induced by distinct mechanisms: the 'orientation-domain' is induced at micrometer scale formed by different tilting orientations of the oxygen octahedra, the 'meso-chemical-domain' occurs at a few tens of nanometer scale by chemical composition variation on the A-site in the ABO 3 perovskite structure, and the 'nano-cluster-region' runs across several unit-cells with apparent A-site cation segregation with oxygen vacancies clustering around Na cations. Based on HRTEM amplitude contrast imaging (ACI), the correlation between the oxygen octahedral tilting pattern and compositional non-stoichiometry was established. Conventional phase diagram generation involves experimentation to provide an initial estimate of the set of thermodynamically accessible phases and their boundaries, followed by use of phenomenological models to interpolate between the available experimental data points and extrapolate to experimentally inaccessible regions. Such an approach, combined with high throughput first-principles calculations and data-mining techniques, has led to exhaustive thermodynamic databases (e.g. compatible with the CALPHAD method), albeit focused on the reduced set of phases observed at distinct thermodynamic equilibria. In contrast, materials during their synthesis, operation, or processing, may not reach their thermodynamic equilibrium state but, instead, remain trapped in a local (metastable) free energy minimum, which may exhibit desirable properties. Here, we introduce an automated workflow that integrates first-principles physics and atomistic simulations with machine learning (ML), and high-performance computing to allow rapid exploration of the metastable phases to construct "metastable" phase diagrams for materials far-from-equilibrium. Using carbon as a prototypical system, we demonstrate automated metastable phase diagram construction to map hundreds of metastable states ranging from near equilibrium to far-from-equilibrium (400 meV/atom). We incorporate the free energy calculations into a neural-network-based learning of the equations of state that allows for efficient construction of metastable phase diagrams. We use the metastable phase diagram and identify domains of relative stability and synthesizability of metastable materials. High temperature high pressure experiments using a diamond anvil cell on graphite sample coupled with high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) confirm our metastable phase predictions. An intensely studied direction is to realize broken-symmetry phases that are "hidden" under equilibrium conditions but can be unleashed by an ultrashort laser pulse. Despite a plethora of experimental discoveries, the nature of these orders and how they transiently appear remain unclear. To this end, we investigate a nonequilibrium charge density wave (CDW) in rare-earth tritellurides, which is suppressed in equilibrium but emerges after photoexcitation. Using a pump-pump-probe protocol implemented in ultrafast electron diffraction, we demonstrate that the light-induced CDW consists solely of order parameter fluctuations, which bear striking similarities to critical fluctuations in equilibrium despite differences in the length scale. By calculating the dynamics of CDW fluctuations in a nonperturbative model, we further show that the strength of the light-induced order is governed by the amplitude of equilibrium fluctuations. These findings highlight photoinduced fluctuations as an important ingredient for the emergence of transient orders out of equilibrium. Our results further suggest that materials with strong fluctuations in equilibrium are promising platforms to host hidden orders after laser excitation.

Vertically stacked transition metal dichalcogenide-graphene heterostructures provide a platform for novel optoelectronic applications with high photoresponse speeds. Photoinduced nonequilibrium carrier and lattice dynamics in such heterostructures underlie these applications but have not been understood. In particular, the dependence of these photoresponses on the twist angle, a key tuning parameter, remains elusive. Here, using ultrafast electron diffraction, we report the simultaneous visualization of charge transfer and electron-phonon coupling in MoS 2 -graphene heterostructures with different stacking configurations. We find that the charge transfer timescale from MoS 2 to graphene varies strongly with twist angle, becoming faster for smaller twist angles, and show that the relaxation timescale is significantly shorter in a heterostructure as compared to a monolayer. These findings illustrate that twist angle constitutes an additional tuning knob for interlayer charge transfer in heterobilayers and deepen our understanding of fundamental photophysical processes in heterostructures, of importance for future applications in optoelectronics and light harvesting.

Introduction: Left atrial appendage (LAA) thrombus in patients with atrial fibrillation is usually detected by transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). Intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) can be a suitable alternative to detect thrombosis. However, the effectiveness of the two methods for detecting LAA thrombus is still unclear, we performed a meta-analysis that compared ICE versus TEE for LAA thrombosis., Methods: We searched PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Embase for published abstracts and manuscripts on June 1, 2020. The analysis was performed using RevMan 5.3, STATA 15, and Meta-Disc 1.4., Results: Eight studies consists of 1108 patients (TEE = 558 vs. ICE = 550) were included. The average sensitivity of ICE and TEE to diagnose LAA thrombus is 1.0 (95% CI: 0.91-1.00) versus 0.68 (95% CI: 0.49-0.83), and specificity of ICE and TEE to diagnosis of LAA thrombus is 1.0 (95% CI: 0.99-1.00) versus 0.98 (95% CI: 0.96-0.99). The AUC of ICE and TEE is 0.9846 (SEAUC = 0.0196) and 0.9655 (SEAUC = 0.0401), and the Q* statistics is 0.9462 (SEQ* = 0.0406) and 0.9127 (SEQ * = 0.0616), respectively. Z test was performed on Q* statistics (Z = 0.45, p > .05)., Conclusion: The ICE and TEE have similar diagnostic efficacy for LAA thrombosis, but the ICE has higher sensitivity. On-chip dynamic strain engineering requires efficient micro-actuators that can generate large in-plane strains. Inorganic electrochemical actuators are unique in that they are driven by low voltages (≈1 V) and produce considerable strains (≈1%). However, actuation speed and efficiency are limited by mass transport of ions. Minimizing the number of ions required to actuate is thus key to enabling useful "straintronic" devices. Here, it is shown that the electrochemical intercalation of exceptionally few lithium ions into WTe 2 causes large anisotropic in-plane strain: 5% in one in-plane direction and 0.1% in the other. This efficient stretching of the 2D WTe 2 layers contrasts to intercalation-induced strains in related materials which are predominantly in the out-of-plane direction. The unusual actuation of Li x WTe 2 is linked to the formation of a newly discovered crystallographic phase, referred to as Td', with an exotic atomic arrangement. On-chip low-voltage (<0.2 V) control is demonstrated over the transition to the novel phase and its composition. Within the Td'-Li 0.5- δ WTe 2 phase, a uniaxial in-plane strain of 1.4% is achieved with a change of δ of only 0.075. This makes the in-plane chemical expansion coefficient of Td'-Li 0.5-δ WTe 2 far greater than of any other single-phase material, enabling fast and efficient planar electrochemical actuation., (© 2021 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Particulate organic carbon (POC) sources, which regulate dissolved organic carbon, sediment organic carbon, and inorganic carbon via deposition, degradation, and mineralization, play an important role in lake ecosystems. Linear or Bayesian algorithms on isotope and n-alkanes have been widely used to identify the source proportion of organic carbon. However, the applicability of these methods is ambiguous because of the unilateral advantages of each model and trace factors. To test the applicability of the various methods for identifying POC sources, we analyzed dual isotopes and n-alkanes in surface water samples of Lake Taihu, and Multi-source mixing model and Bayesian mixing model were used to distinguish between endogenous and exogenous contributions. Carbon isotope presented a clear advantage in West Taihu (-21.85 ± 0.78‰) and Southwest Taih (-22.61 ± 1.35‰); nitrogen isotope also showed high values in Meiliang Bay (9.76 ± 0.92‰). The majority of the lake was dominated by short-chain n-alkanes, except for East Taihu Lake (dominated by medium-chain n-alkanes) and areas with riverine input (dominated by long-chain n-alkanes). Different principles between the Bayesian mixing model (based on the Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm) and the Multi-source mixing model (based on linear estimation) caused discrepancies in the estimations of source contributions. But the fraction of chemical compounds during the migration process, and the overlap of potential sources play important role in the inconsistency of results. The estimations from the different models were consistent in indicating the dominance of endogenous organic carbon in Lake Taihu (mean of 60.18 ± 20.26%), particularly in the north and western regions (West Taihu, Meiliang Bay, and Southwest Taihu). It is of great research interest to understand the nanostructures contributing to the activity observed in the reduction of oxygen by non-platinum group metal (PGM) electrocatalysts in acidic media. Iron- and nitrogen-containing carbon networks are often the most studied structures, among which single-atom iron-coordinated nitrogen (FeN x ) moieties have often been proposed to be the structures leading to the high activity in these non-PGM electrocatalysts. Iron nanoparticles embedded within a carbon support are also formed under certain conditions as a result of the synthetic processes in making non-PGM electrocatalysts. In this study, we present a study to understand the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity of prepared iron- and nitrogen-containing non-PGM electrocatalysts obtained through the pyrolysis of metal-organic framework (MOF) precursors. We studied the structure-property relationship among nanostructures made from the MOF precursor ZIF-8 under different pyrolysis conditions. Density functional theory calculations were used to explain the effect of structural moieties on the ORR activity. Our results suggest that iron-coordinated C-N structures and iron nanoparticles act synergistically to catalyze the ORR.

The inspection of Friedel's law in ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) is important to gain a comprehensive understanding of material atomic structure and its dynamic response. Here, monoclinic gallium telluride (GaTe), as a low-symmetry, layered crystal in contrast to many other 2D materials, is investigated by mega-electronvolt UED. Strong out-of-phase oscillations of Bragg peak intensities are observed for Friedel pairs, which does not obey Friedel's law. As evidenced by the preserved mirror symmetry and supported by both kinematic and dynamic scattering simulations, the intensity oscillations are provoked by the lowest-order longitudinal acoustic breathing phonon. Our results provide a generalized understanding of Friedel's law in UED and demonstrate that by designed misalignment of surface normal and primitive lattice vectors, coherent lattice wobbling and effective shear strain can be generated in crystal films by laser pulse excitation, which is otherwise hard to achieve and can be further utilized to dynamically tune and switch material properties.

Sixteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in a sediment core from Dianchi Lake, southwest China, were analysed. The influence of changes in China's energy structure for 2-6 ringed PAHs was investigated to assess sources and the impact of socioeconomic development on temporal changes in concentrations. The concentration of the ΣPAH 16 ranged from 746 to 2293 ng g -1 . Prior to the 1960s relatively low concentrations of the ΣPAH 16 and a larger proportion of 2-3-ring PAHs indicated that biomass combustion was the main source of PAHs. A rapid increase in the concentrations of 2-3 ring PAHs between 1975 and 2004 was attributed to population growth and coal consumption. A declining trend since 2004 was interpreted as being due to local changes in household energy usage. Increased concentrations of 4-ring PAH between 1975-2005 and 5-6-ring PAHs between the 1980s to 2004 showed correlations with increased coal consumption and the number of motor vehicles, respectively. These were caused by rapid urbanization and industrialization in the Dianchi watershed following the implementation of the Reform and Open Policy in 1978. A subsequent decline in the concentrations of 4-ring and 5-6-ring PAHs may have been due to decreased coal consumption and improvements in emission standards, respectively. Source apportionment by a PMF model revealed that coal combustion (29.2%), vehicle emissions (24.2%), petrogenic sources (21.8%), and biomass combustion (24.9%) were the sources of PAHs in the lake sediment core, and that coal combustion was the most important regional source of PAHs pollution., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Ltd. The streak tubes with a large effective photocathode area, large effective phosphor screen area, and high photocathode radiant sensitivity are essential for improving the field of view, depth of field, and detectable range of the multiple-slit streak tube imaging lidar. In this paper, a high spatial resolution, large photocathode area, and compact meshless streak tube with a spherically curved cathode and screen is designed and tested. Its spatial resolution reaches 20 lp/mm over the entire Φ28 mm photocathode working area, and the simulated physical temporal resolution is better than 30 ps. The temporal distortion in our large-format streak tube, which is shown to be a non-negligible factor, has a minimum value as the radius of curvature of the photocathode varies. Furthermore, the photocathode radiant sensitivity and radiant power gain reach 41 mA/W and 18.4 at the wavelength of 550 nm, respectively. Most importantly, the external dimensions of our streak tube are no more than Φ60 mm × 110 mm.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of Ang-(1-7) on calcium transient (CaT) in cardiomyocytes during the pathogenesis of heart failure. Cardiac dysfunction was induced by ligation of left anterior descending coronary artery in adult SD rats. Randomly selected rats were ligated and continuously infused with Ang-(1-7) [HF + Ang-(1-7) group] or saline (HF + saline group) via osmotic minipumps. After 28 days, hemodynamic parameters, the CaT, and the heart rate threshold of CaT alternans (CaT-Alt) were measured. Continuous Ang-(1-7) treatment could attenuate the impairment of cardiac function following LAD ligation. The amplitudes (F/F0) and 50%/90% recovery time of CaT were significantly different among HF + saline, HF + Ang-(1-7) and Sham-operated group. Compared to the Sham-operated group, the HF + saline group showed decreased CaT amplitude, and a prolonged 50%/90% CaT recovery time; Ang-(1-7) significantly improved these abnormalities. Compared with Sham-operated group, heart rate thresholds of CaT-Alt significantly reduced in HF + saline group, and Ang-(1-7) partly restored it. These findings indicate that Ang-(1-7) attenuates the CaT disturbance and increases the heart rate threshold of CaT-Alt during the pathogenesis of ischemic heart failure., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Inc. Accumulating evidence indicates that angiotensin-(1-7) [Ang-(1-7)] offers protective effects against ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) induced arrhythmias and contractile dysfunction, which are related to disturbances of intracellular calcium homeostasis. However, whether or not Ang-(1-7) regulates intracellular calcium in I/R is not clear. To shed light on this issue, we carried out studies with a cellular model of simulated I/R in isolated rat ventricular myocytes and measured calcium transients using laser scanning confocal microscopy. Our results showed that Ang-(1-7) had no effects on the calcium transient in myocytes superfused with normal solution; however, in myocytes of simulated I/R, Ang-(1-7) significantly attenuated the increased diastolic intracellular Ca during reperfusion, restored the decreased peak Ca of calcium transient during ischemia, and reversed the decreased amplitude of calcium transient throughout the I/R periods. Additionally, Ang-(1-7) significantly suppressed the reactive oxygen species production in I/R, especially during the ischemic phase. These data indicated that Ang-(1-7) affords significant cytoprotective effects through directly improving calcium homeostasis independent of its anti-oxidative action. Most notably, the effects of Ang-(1-7) on intracellular Ca dynamics manifests only in the diseased states, that is, I/R. This unique property suggests that upregulation of Ang-(1-7) expression and/or activation of the Ang-(1-7)/Mas signaling cascade is a highly desirable strategy for the treatment of myocardial impairment induced by I/R.

Epidural hematoma (EDH) is a type of life-threatening traumatic brain injury. Little is known about the extent to which EDH may cause neural damage and regenerative response in the cerebral cortex. Here we attempted to explore these issues by using guinea pigs as an experimental model. Unilateral EDH was induced by injection of 0.1 ml autologous blood into the extradural space, with experimental effects examined at 7, 14, 30, and 60 days postlesion. An infarct developed in the cortex deep to the EDH largely after 7 days postlesion, with neuronal death occurred from layers I to V in the central infarct region, as evidenced by loss of immunoreactivity (IR) for neuron-specific nuclear antigen (NeuN). Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) IR appeared as a cellular band surrounding the infarct and extending into the periinfarct cortex along the pia. Doublecortin (DCX) IR emerged in these same areas, with labeled cells appearing as astrocytic and neuronal profiles. DCX/GFAP colocalization was found in these regions commonly at 7 and 14 days postlesion, whereas DCX/NeuN-colabeled neurons were detectable at 30 and 60 days postlesion. Subpopulations of GFAP-, DCX-, or NeuN-immunoreactive cells colocalized with the endogenous proliferative marker Ki-67 or bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) after pulse-chase with this birth-dating marker. The results suggest that experimental EDH can cause severe neuronal loss, induce significant glial activation, and promote a certain degree of local neuronal genesis in adult guinea pig neocortex. Aim: We present the long-term outcomes as well as their correlation with tumor size in 127 consecutive patients harboring large MSWM after microsurgical treatment., Material and Methods: The retrospective analysis of clinical data and follow-up data of 127 microsurgical treated patients with MSWM was performed. The mean maximum diameter of tumors was 5.2cm (ranged 1.5-10.0cm)., Results: 104 cases (81.9%) achieved gross total resection. There was no operative mortality. Detailed follow-up data was available in 120 cases for a mean duration of 81.6 months (12-216 months). The permanent morbidity was 14.2%. The mean KPS score 1 year after surgery was 90.6 (ranged 60-100). Among 74 patients of preoperative visual acuity (VA) impairment, postoperative VA improved in 42 cases (56.8%), unchanged in 30 (40.5%), and deteriorated in 2 (2.7%). MR images revealed tumor recurrence after total resection in 10 cases (10.2%) and tumor progression after subtotal resection in 10 cases (45.5%)., Conclusion: Tumor recurrence was the major risk in the long run, thus the initial surgery was extremely important and hence should be aggressive. The size of tumor affected the extent of tumor removal determining clinical outcomes including VA improvement and KPS score immediately after surgery; however, it was not correlated with long-term overall outcomes.

DCX-immunoreactive (DCX+) cells occur in the piriform cortex in adult mice and rats, but also in the neocortex in adult guinea pigs and rabbits. Here we describe these cells in adult domestic cats and primates. In cats and rhesus monkeys, DCX+ cells existed across the allo- and neocortex, with an overall ventrodorsal high to low gradient at a given frontal plane. Labeled cells formed a cellular band in layers II and upper III, exhibiting dramatic differences in somal size (5-20 microm), shape (unipolar, bipolar, multipolar and irregular), neuritic complexity and labeling intensity. Cell clusters were also seen in this band, and those in the entorhinal cortex extended into deeper layers as chain-like structures. Densitometry revealed a parallel decline of the cells across regions with age in cats. Besides the cellular band, medium-sized cells with weak DCX reactivity resided sparsely in other layers. Throughout the cortex, virtually all DCX+ cells co-expressed polysialylated neural cell adhesion molecule. Medium to large mature-looking DCX+ cells frequently colocalized with neuron-specific nuclear protein and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and those with a reduced DCX expression also partially co-labeled for glutamic acid decarboxylase, parvalbumin, calbindin, beta-nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate diaphorase and neuronal nitric oxide synthase. Similar to cats and monkeys, small and larger DCX+ cells were detected in surgically removed human frontal and temporal cortices. These data suggest that immature neurons persist into adulthood in many cortical areas in cats and primates, and that these cells appear to undergo development and differentiation to become functional subgroups of GABAergic interneurons.

Doublecortin-immunoreactive (DCX+) cells were detected across the allo- and neo-cortical regions in the adult guinea pig cerebrum, localized to layer II specifically at its border with layer I. The density of labeled cells declined with age, whereas no apparent apoptotic activity was detectable over the cortex including layer II. DCX+ cells varied in somal size, labeling intensity, nuclear appearance, and complexity of processes. These cells were often arranged in clusters with cells of similar morphology sometimes packed tightly together. They exhibited complete colocalization with polysialylated neural cell adhesion molecule (PSA-NCAM) and neuron-specific type III beta-tubulin (TuJ1). Medium to large-sized DCX+ cells had well-developed neuritic processes, and expressed neuron-specific nuclear protein (NeuN). Large mature-looking cells with weak DCX reactivity invariably displayed heavy NeuN reactivity, implicating a transitional stage of these labeled cells. These "transitional" cells also consistently exhibited weak reactivity for gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), glutamate decarboxylase (GAD67), beta-nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate diaphorase (NADPH-d) and neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS), suggestive of them being young GABAergic/nitrinergic interneurons. Our data indicate that DCX+ cells exist widely in the adult guinea pig cerebral cortex, with a predominant localization in upper layer II. The morphological variation and differential expression of neuronal markers in these cells implicate that they might be developing neurons, and that they are probably differentiating into GABAergic interneurons. This population of cells might be involved in interneuron plasticity in the adult mammalian cerebral cortex.

Aim: To explore the expansion and differentiation of hepatocytoid cell induced from myeloid mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) in vitro, in order to find suitable resource of hepatocytes for bioartificial liver or liver transplantation., Methods: The rat myeloid MSC was isolated and divided into three groups which were cultured by Friedensteion method, and then were induced by culture fluid, culture fluid plus cholestatic serum and culture fluid plus hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), respectively. Hepatocytoid cell as well as expression of CK18 and AFP was observed by immunohistochemistry., Results: After the induction for 21 d, hepatocytoid cell was observed, and its expression of CK18 and AFP was detected by immunohistochemistry in MSC cultured with cholestatic serum. Furthermore, on the 35th d, albumin mRNA was expressed in the cell, suggesting the inducing effect was similar to that by HGF., Conclusion: Rat myeloid MSC can differentiate into hepatocyte lineage under appropriate condition. This method is easy to operate.

Objective: To investigate the effect of Chinese traditional medicine heluoshugan capsule on liver fibrosis induced by Schistosoma japonicum infection in mice., Methods: Liver fibrosis in mice was established by Schistosoma japonicum infection in 6 weeks. Suspension of heluoshugan prepared with normal saline was given orally to the mice, 2 capsules for 20 mice daily for 8 weeks. The level of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), focal adhesion kinase (FAK) and type I, III collagen in liver tissue were detected by immuno-histochemistry., Results: The results showed that heluoshugan improved the pathological change of the liver tissue, decreased the level of type I, III collagen, especially type III collagen (P < 0.01). The level of VEGF and FAK expression was inhibited after the administration of heluoshugan, though the level usually increased in liver fibrosis due to the infection., Conclusions: The result suggests that heluoshugan capsule might have therapeutic effect on liver fibrosis induced by the infection of Schistosoma japonicum in mice, by inhibiting the activation of hepatic stellate cells and the pathological change of liver blood vessel.

Objective: To study the expression of hepatic Bcl-2 and Bax proteins in mice infected with Schistosoma japonicum and the role of pentoxifylline (PTX) in the expression., Methods: Forty mice were randomly divided into 4 groups: one normal control group,mice in the other three groups were all infected each with 25 cercariae, the infected control group was fed for 10 weeks after infection, and 2 weeks after infection, the high dose PTX group was given PTX 360 mg/(kg x d) for 8 weeks and the low dose PTX group was given PTX 180 mg/(kg x d)also for 8 weeks. At the end of 10 weeks all the mice were killed. Bcl-2 and Bax proteins expression was detected by immunohistochemisty., Results: Compared with the normal control group, the expression of Bcl-2 and Bax was significantly higher in the infected control group (P < 0.05). Bcl-2 was significantly higher in high (dose PTX group than in the infected control group and in low dose PTX group (P < 0.05). However there was no significant difference in the expression of Bax among the groups (P > 0.05)., Conclusion: PTX treatment can significantly increase the expression of Bcl-2 in liver tissue of schistosome-infected mice in a dose-dependent manner, and may play a role against liver inflammation and schistosomiasis-related liver fibrosis.

Objective: To establish hepatitis C virus (HCV) infected cell model which is similar to the infection in vivo and can support HCV to replicate for a long time., Methods: After infected with HCV-positive serum, Hep G2 cells were cultured for 60 days. Nested RT-PCR was used to detect plus and minus HCV RNA in cultured cells and supernatants., Results: Plus HCV RNA was detected intermittently in Hep G2 cells during 2-30 days, minus HCV RNA was detected during 3-30 days after infection, the detection rate was similar to plus HCV RNA. Plus and minus HCV RNA can be still intermittently detected during 31-60 days after infection. However, the detection rate gradually declined. Plus HCV RNA was also found intermittently positive in the supernatant, and the detection rate was consistent to that in cells. Minus HCV RNA was not detected in the supernatant., Conclusion: Hep G2 cells were susceptible to HCV, and could support HCV to replicate for a relatively long time. Hep G2 is an ideal HCV infection cell model.

Background: The mortality rate of heavy type hepatitis is high. No special treatment is available except general treatment. This multicenter clinical study was designed to observe the safety and efficacy of promoting hepatic growth factor (PHGF) in the treatment of heavy type hepatitis and severe chronic hepatitis., Methods: 347 patients with heavy type hepatitis and 324 with severe chronic hepatitis were subjected to administration of 120 microg of PHGF per day for 4 weeks on the basis of general treatment. Those who were being effectively treated would last additional 2 to 4 weeks. Blood routine, urine routine, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), blood creatinine (Cr), blood ammonia, alpha fetoprotein (AFP), electrolyte, alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), serum total bilirubin (TBIL), serum direct bilirubin (DBIL), prothrombin time activity (PTA), total protein (TP) and albumin (ALB) were detected in the patients before treatment, 2 weeks after treatment, and at the end of the treatment. Any side-effect would be recorded., Results: In the patients with severe chronic hepatitis, the total effective rate of the treatment was 88.9%. The levels of ALT, AST and TBIL decreased significantly (P<0.001), whereas those of PTA and ALB increased significantly (P<0.001), and the level of AFP increased slightly. In patients with heavy type hepatitis, the total effective rate of this treatment was 78.4%, and patients at different stage showed different results. The total effective rates of patients with early, medium and terminal stage heavy type hepatitis were 89.9%, 84.8% and 27.5%, respectively. No severe side-effect was shown., Conclusion: PHGF is effective and safe in the treatment of patients with heavy type hepatitis and severe chronic hepatitis. But it should be administered early in patients with heavy type hepatitis so as to get better curative effects.

Objective: To establish a new and efficient method(IEDA) for detection of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome virus (HFRSV) antigen., Methods: An immune enzyme dot assay (IEDA) with mixture of three sorts anti-HFRSV-IgG, which was obtained from rabbit vaccinated with EHFV R22, Chen and Hubei strain was employed to detect HFRSV antigen in serum and urine from epidemic hemorrhagic fever (EHF) patients, and compared with indirect immune fluorescence assay (I-IFA), 76 serum samples and 40 urine samples were detected in this study., Results: The results showed that the total positive rate of HFRSV antigen detected by IEDA was 73.68% in serum and 65.00% in urine, while that detected by I-IFA was 75.00% and 70.00%, respectively. The positive rate in primary phase (within 5 days) of HFRSV antigen detected by IEDA was 94.34% in serum and 83.33% in urine, while that detected by I-IFA was 64.42% and 55.56%, respectively, there was significant difference in both serum and urine detections. Correlation study showed a high correlation in the result of IEDA and I-IFA., Conclusion: The results of this study suggested that the IEDA, as compared with I-IFA, was a more specific, sensitive, rapid and simple method with higher positive rate in primary phase. IEDA could be widely used for early diagnosis of HFRS in hospital at grassroots level.

Aim: To study the effects of pentoxifylline (PTX) on the content of hepatic TGF-beta1, type I and type III collagen in schistosomiasis japonica mice with liver fibrosis and its mechanism of anti-fibrosis., Methods: Forty mice with schistosomiasis were divided into four groups: one group as control without any treatment, other three were treated with Praziquantel 500 mg/(kg x d)for 2 d, high dose PTX 360 mg/(kg x d) for 8 wk, and low dose PTX 180 mg/(kg x d) for 8 wk respectively. Immunohistochemical technique and multimedia color pathographic analysis system were applied to observe the content change of hepatic TGF-beta1, type I and type III collagen in schistosomiasis japonica mice with liver fibrosis before and after PTX treatment., Results: Effects of PTX on the content change of hepatic TGF-beta1, type I and type III collagen in schistosomiasis japonica mice with liver fibrosis were related to the dosage of PTX, high dose PTX treated group could significantly reduce the content of TGF-beta1 (0.709+/-0.111), type I (0.644+/-0.108) and type III (0.654+/-0.152) collagen compared with those of control group (0.883+/-0.140, 0.771+/-0.156, 0.822+/-0.129) with statistical significance (P<0.05). Low dose PTX could also reduce the hepatic content of TGF-beta1 (0.752+/-0.152), type I (0.733+/-0.117) and type III (0.788+/-0.147) collagen, but without statistical significance (P>0.05). Both high dose and low dose PTX groups have significant differences on the content of TGF-beta1, type I and type III collagen (P<0.05, P<0.05, P<0.01, respectively)., Conclusion: High dose of PTX treatment could reduce the content of hepatic TGF-beta1, type I and type III collagen significantly in schistosomiasis japonica mice with liver fibrosis, and thus plays its role of antifibrosis.

Objective: To detect the expression of IL-2 and TNF-alpha in the liver at different period postinfection of Schistosoma japonicum and their effect on liver fibrosis after supplementary injection of these cytokines., Methods: Mice were infected with schistosome cercariae and divided into 3 groups. Two groups were injected (i.p.) every other day with IL-2 and TNF-alpha respectively for consecutive 4 wk. The third group and an uninfected group of normal mice were regarded as control. The ABC immunohistochemistry and pathologic image multimedia quantification system were applied to detect activity of IL-2 and TNF-alpha., Results: The level of IL-2 and TNF-alpha in the liver in infected but untreated group slowly decreased (from 8, 11, 14 to 18 wk). The supplementary injection of the cytokines at 6 wk postinfection in the two groups increased the cytokines significantly, the level of IL-2 or TNF-alpha was higher at 1-8 wk after the last injection than that of both infected and uninfected control groups (P < 0.01). The granulomatous inflammation and fibrosis in the livers of the two groups were slighter than that of the control., Conclusion: At the 6th wk postinfection with egg deposition, exogenous supplementation with TNF-alpha or IL-2 induces enhanced expression of the two kinds of cytokines, corresponding to a diminished degree of the liver granulomatous inflammation and fibrosis.

AIM:To explore the relationship between endoinfection caused by intestinal flora translocation and multiple organ dysfunction in hepatic failure.METHODS:By using the quantitative bacteria culture, bacteria colony was counted in GI tract, bile duct and mesenteric lymphonodus in rat hepatic failure model.RESULTS:Intestinal flora migrated up to the upper GI tract and overgrew in stomach and jejunum in rats with hepatic failure.The number of bacteria colonies in the specimens of stomach, jejunum and ileum were 4.7X10(4)/mL, 2.1X10(5)/mL, 5.5X10(6)/mL in experiment group and 4.6X10(2)/mL, 6.1X10(1)/mL, 2.4X10(3)/mL in control group respectively (P < 0.05 ). Bacteria in bile duct and mesenteric lymphonodus of hepatic failure rats were also cultured. Extensive damages of gastrointestinal mucosa caused by bacterial overgrowth were observed.CONCLUSION:Intestinal flora translocation and overgrowth in stomach and jejunum formed an endoinfectious source and caused obvious pathological injury of gastrointestinal mucosa, which play a very important role in developing abdominal distension, toxic intestinal expansion, alimentary tract haemorrhage and endotoxemia in patients with hepatic failure.
