Charge stripes have been widely observed in many different types of unconventional superconductors, holding varying periods ( P ) and intensities. However, a general understanding on the interplay between charge stripes and superconducting properties is still incomplete. Here, using large-scale unbiased numerical simulations on a general inhomogeneous Hubbard model, we discover that the charge-stripe period P , which is variable in different real material systems, could dictate the pairing symmetries-d wave for P ≥ 4 , s and d waves for P ≤ 3 . In the latter, tuning hole doping and charge-stripe amplitude can trigger a d-s wave transition and magnetic-correlation shift, where the d-wave state converts to a pairing-density wave state, competing with the s wave. These interesting phenomena arise from an unusual stripe-induced selection rule of pairing symmetries around on-stripe region and within inter-stripe region, giving rise to a critical point of P = 3 for the phase transition. In general, our findings offer important insights into the differences in the superconducting pairing mechanisms across many P -dependent superconducting systems, highlighting the decisive role of charge stripe., (© 2024. Finding high-temperature superconductivity in light-weight element containing compounds at atmosphere pressure is currently a research hotspot but has not been reached yet. Here it is proposed that hard or superhard materials can be promising candidates to possess the desirable high-temperature superconductivity. By studying the electronic structures and superconducting properties of H and Li doped c-BN within the framework of the first-principles, it is demonstrated that the doped c-BN are indeed good superconductors at ambient pressure after undergoing the phase transition from the insulating to metallic behavior, though holding different nature of metallization. Li doped c-BN is predicted to exhibit the superconducting transition temperature of ≈58 K, while H doped c-BN has stronger electron-phonon interaction and possesses a higher transition temperature of 122 K. Gastrochilusbalangshanensis , a new orchid species from the Balang Mountain, Sichuan Province, Southwest China, is described and illustrated. It morphologically resembles G.affinis , but differs in having shorter stems, a reniform epichile and a sub-hemispherical hypochile (spur), obtuse-rounded at the apex. The results of molecular phylogenetic analyses based on nuclear ribosome internal transcribed spacer (nrITS) and four chloroplast DNA markers ( mat K, psb A- trn H, psb M- trn D and trn L-F) from 50 Gastrochilus species indicate that G.balangshanensis is closely related to G.heminii and G.bernhardtianus , also endemic to the Hengduan Mountains. We study the scaling behavior of the Rényi entanglement entropy with smooth boundaries at the putative deconfined critical point separating the Néel antiferromagnetic and valence-bond-solid states of the two-dimensional J-Q_{3} model. We observe a subleading logarithmic term with a coefficient indicating the presence of four Goldstone modes, signifying the presence of an SO(5) symmetry at the transition point, which spontaneously breaks into an O(4) symmetry in the thermodynamic limit. This result supports the conjecture that an SO(5) symmetry emerges at the transition point, but reveals the transition to be weakly first-order. We demonstrate, through this Letter, a novel approach to detect emergent continuous symmetry and, more importantly, identify weakly first-order phase transitions efficiently, which have been notoriously challenging for conventional methods.

Quantum entanglement marks a definitive feature of topological states. However, the entanglement spectrum remains insufficiently explored for topological states without a bulk energy gap. Using a combination of field theory and numerical techniques, we accurately calculate and analyze the entanglement spectrum of gapless symmetry protected topological states in one dimension. We highlight that the universal entanglement spectrum not only encodes the nontrivial edge degeneracy, generalizing the Li-Haldane conjecture to gapless topological states, but also contains the operator content of the underlying boundary conformal field theory. This implies that the bulk wave function can act as a fingerprint of both quantum criticality and topology in gapless symmetry protected topological states. We also identify a symmetry enriched conformal boundary condition that goes beyond the conventional conformal boundary condition.

Further increasing the critical temperature and/or decreasing the stabilized pressure are the general hopes for the hydride superconductors. Inspired by the low stabilized pressure associated with Ce 4f electrons in superconducting cerium superhydride and the high critical temperature in yttrium superhydride, we carry out seven independent runs to synthesize yttrium-cerium alloy hydrides. The synthetic process is examined by the Raman scattering and X-ray diffraction measurements. The superconductivity is obtained from the observed zero-resistance state with the detected onset critical temperatures in the range of 97-141 K. The upper critical field towards 0 K at pressure of 124 GPa is determined to be between 56 and 78 T by extrapolation of the results of the electrical transport measurements at applied magnetic fields. The analysis of the structural data and theoretical calculations suggest that the phase of Y 0.5 Ce 0.5 H 9 in hexagonal structure with the space group of P6 3 /mmc is stable in the studied pressure range. These results indicate that alloying superhydrides indeed can maintain relatively high critical temperature at relatively modest pressures accessible by laboratory conditions., (© 2024. Clathrate hydrideFm3-m-LaH 10 has been proven as the most extraordinary superconductor with the critical temperature T c above 250 K upon compression of hundreds of GPa in recent years. A general hope is to reduce the stabilization pressure and maintain the high T c value of the specific phase in LaH 10 . However, strong structural instability distortsFm3-mstructure and leads to a rapid decrease of T c at low pressures. Here, we investigate the phase stability and superconducting behaviors ofFm3-m-LaH 10 with enhanced chemical pre-compression through partly replacing La by Ce atoms from both experiments and calculations. For explicitly characterizing the synthesized hydride, we choose lanthanum-cerium alloy with stoichiometry composition of 1:1. X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering measurements reveal the stabilization ofFm3-m-La 0.5 Ce 0.5 H 10 in the pressure range of 140-160 GPa. Superconductivity with T c of 175 ± 2 K at 155 GPa is confirmed with the observation of the zero-resistivity state and supported by the theoretical calculations. To explore carbide superconductors with higher transition temperature, two novel carbon structures of cage-network are designed and their superconductivity is studied by doping metals. MC 6 and MC 10 are respectively identified as C 24 and C 32 cage-network structures. This study finds that both carbon structures drive strong electron-phonon interaction and can exhibit superconductivity above liquid nitrogen temperature. Importantly, the superconducting transition temperatures above 100 K are predicted to be achieved in C 24 -cage-network systems doped by Na, Mg, Al, In, and Tl at ambient pressure, which is far higher than those in graphite, fullerene, and other carbides. Meanwhile, the superconductivity of cage-network carbides is also found to be sensitive to the electronegativity and concentration of dopant M. The result indicates that the higher transition temperatures can be obtained by optimizing the carbon-cage-network structures and the doping conditions. Objective: To investigate the role of the lncRNA MEG3 (MEG3) in opposing the biochemical processes thought to be involved in the development of atherosclerosis (AS)., Methods: Thirty patients with AS and thirty healthy control subjects were enrolled in this study. The expression of MEG3, miR-200b-3p and ABCA1 was analyzed by RT-qPCR in the individuals and the macrophages-derived foam cells. Lipid accumulation was detected by oil red O staining. Cholesterol efflux was measured by ELISA assay in the foam cells. Expression of miR-200b-3p was identified by sequencing. Targeting relationships were determined by dual luciferase assay between MEG3 and miR-200b-3p, miR-200b-3p and ABCA1., Results: In the patients with AS, MEG3 and ABCA1 expression were decreased and miR-200b-3p expression was upregulated. Foam cells transfected with an expression vector (pcDNA3.1) containing MEG3 (pcDNA3.1-MEG3) induced decrease of lipid accumulation and increase of cholesterol efflux compared to cells transfected with control plasmid alone. Foam cells transfected by pcDNA3.1-MEG3 also showed decreased miR-200b-3p and increased ABCA1 expression. Interestingly, co-expression of miR-200b-3p partially prevented these effects of MEG3 expression., Conclusion: Expression of MEG3 is downregulated in the patients with AS and foam cells. Locally routing the exciton emissions in two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal dichalcogenides along different directions at the nanophotonic interface is of great interest in exploiting the promising 2D excitonic systems for functional nano-optical components. However, such control has remained elusive. Herein we report on a facile plasmonic approach for electrically controlled spatial modulation of the exciton emissions in a WS 2 monolayer. The emission routing is enabled by the resonance coupling between the WS 2 excitons and the multipole plasmon modes in individual silver nanorods placed on a WS 2 monolayer. Different from prior demonstrations, the routing effect can be modulated by the doping level of the WS 2 monolayer, enabling electrical control. Our work takes advantage of the high-quality plasmon modes supported by simple rod-shaped metal nanocrystals for the angularly resolved manipulation of 2D exciton emissions. Active control is achieved, which offers great opportunities for the development of nanoscale light sources and nanophotonic devices.

This paper describes and illustrates a new species of Primulaceae, Primulawolongensis sp. nov. from Wolong National Nature Reserve in Sichuan Province, China. It is very rare and currently only known from its type locality. The new species belongs to subsection Chartacea of the section Petiolares on account of lacking bud scales at flowering, being efarinose and having distinct petiolate leaves with more or less rounded lamina. The new species can be differentiated from other members of the subsection by leaf blade margin dentate, and leaf veins which are not raised, scape shorter than or equal to pedicels, yellow flowers and location of stamens of the corolla tube at thrum flower. Molecular phylogenetic analysis based on nuclear ribosome internal transcribed spacer (nrITS) demonstrated that P.wolongensis was sister to subgen. Auriculastrum. Gastrochilusheminii (Orchidaceae), a new orchid species from Sichuan Province, Southwest China, is described and illustrated. It morphologically resembles G.affinis and G.yei , but differs markedly from the former in having a thinner and slightly rolled downwards reniform epichile and the central thickened purple-red mat with irregular folds (vs. subtriangular epichile curves upwards, with 2 thick, brown to purplish-brown median ridges from base to apex), and can be clearly distinguished from the latter by having reniform epichile with lobed apex and subconical hypochile with bilobed apex that splits into two conical protrusions (vs. semi-rounded epichile not lobed and subconical hypochile not bilobed). Introduction: Solitary pulmonary nodules (SPNs) are commonly found in imaging technologies, but are plagued by high false-positive rates., Objective: We aimed to identify metabolic alterations in SPN etiology and diagnosis using less invasive plasma metabolomics and lipidomics., Methods: In total, 1160 plasma samples were obtained from healthy volunteers (n = 280), benign SPNs (n = 157) and malignant SPNs (stage I, n = 723) patients enrolled from 5 independent centers. Gas chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC‒MS) and liquid chromatography-Q Exactive Hybrid Quadrupole-Orbitrap mass spectrometry (LC‒MS) were used to analyze the samples for untargeted metabolomics and lipidomics., Results and Conclusion: GC‒MS-based metabolomics revealed 1336 metabolic features, while LC‒MS-based lipidomics revealed 6088 and 2542 lipid features in the positive and negative ion modes, respectively. The metabolic and lipidic characteristics of healthy vs. benign or malignant SPNs exhibited substantial pattern differences. Of note, benign and malignant SPNs had no significant variations in circulating metabolic and lipidic markers and were validated in four other centers. Two-dimensional (2D) electrides, characterized by excess interstitial anionic electron (IAE) in a crystalline 2D material, offer promising opportunities for the development of electrode materials, in particular in rechargeable metal-ion batteries applications. Although a few such potential electride materials have been reported, they generally show low metal-ion storage capacity, and the effect of IAE on the ion storage performance remains elusive so far. Here we report a novel 2D electride, [Sc 3 Si 2 ] 1+ ·1e - , with fascinating IAE-driven high alkali metal-ion storage capacity. In particular, its K-ion specific capacity can reach up to 1497 mA h g -1 , higher than any previously reported 2D materials-based anodes in K-ion batteries (PIBs). The IAE in the [Sc 3 Si 2 ] 1+ ·1e - crystal accounts for such high capacity behavior, which can drift away and balance the charge on the metal-cation, playing a crucial role in stabilizing the metal-ion adsorption and enhancing multilayer-ions adsorption. This proposed IAE-driven storage mechanism provides an unprecedented avenue for the future design of high storage capacity electrode materials.

Purpose: Chronic inflammation contributes to tumor initiation, progression, and immune escape. Neutrophils are the major component of inflammatory response and participate in the tumorigenesis process. However, compared to other immune cells in the tumor microenvironment of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC), neutrophils, especially the tumor-associated neutrophils (TANs), have not yet been comprehensively explored. The mechanism for regulating the crosstalk between TANs and tumor cells still remains unclear., Materials and Methods: The distribution profiles and phenotypic features of neutrophils and other inflammatory immune cell populations from a large LSCC patient cohort were systemically analyzed. Co-culturing of peripheral blood associated neutrophils (PANs) and TANs with PBMCs was performed, and the immunosuppression effect on T-cells was examined., Results: LSCC microenvironment is highly inflammatory with remarkable TANs infiltration, which is often associated with unfavorable prognosis and advanced clinical stage. We find that TANs in LSCC display morphologically immature and lower apoptosis, exhibit distinctively immunosuppressive phenotype of high PD-L1, and suppress CD8 + T lymphocytes proliferation and activation. We subsequently discover that PD-L1 + TANs induced by LSCC-derived GM-CSF potently impair CD8 + T-cells proliferation and cytokines production function, which are partially blocked by a PD-L1-neutralizing antibody. Clinical data further support GM-CSF as an unfavorable prognostic biomarker and reveal a potential association with inflammatory immune cell infiltration, in particular neutrophils., Conclusion: Tumor-infiltrating PD-L1+ neutrophils induced by LSCC-derived GM-CSF suppress T cell proliferation and activation in the inflammatory microenvironment of LSCC and predict unfavorable prognosis. These TANs cripple antitumor T cell immunity and promote tumor progression. Objective: To retrospectively analyze the occurrence and treatment of perioperative complete atrioventricular block (CAVB) by transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). Methods: A total of 65 patients who underwent TAVI via femoral artery in the Heart Center of Henan People's Hospital from October 2017 to May 2021 were enrolled. Perioperative data of patients were recorded. The patients were divided into two groups according to whether complete atrioventricular block was occurred during TAVI: complete atrioventricular block group (Group CAVB) and non-complete atrioventricular block group (Group NCAVB). Multivariate logistic regression model was used to analyze the risk factors of complete atrioventricular block during transcatheter aortic valve implantation. The incidence of perioperative complications were recorded. Results: The patients age was (69.1±7.3) years old. and there were 35 males and 30 femals. There were 15 patients in group CAVB with complete atrioventricular block and 50 patients in group NCAVB. Multivariate analysis showed that preoperative right bundle branch block [ OR (95% CI ) vs 3.325 (2.132-13.061), P =0.005] and severe aortic valve calcification [ OR (95% CI ) vs 1.271 (1.052-3.326), P =0.030] were independent correlative factors for CAVB during TAVI perioperative period. The implantation rate of permanent pacemaker in group CAVB was 73.3% (11 cases), which was higher than 6.0% (3 cases) in group NCAVB ( P <0.001). Conclusions: It indicated that preoperative right bundle branch block and severe aortic valve calcification are correlative factors for complete atrioventricular block for TAVI. The implantation rate of permanent pacemaker in complete atrioventricular block group increased significantly.

Background: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disorder associated with loss of motor neurons. Our objective was to explore the epidemiology, clinical features, and survival factors of 1809 patients with ALS., Methods: We analyzed 1809 ALS patients, who were recruited from the Peking University Third Hospital from January 2005 to December 2015. Demographic data and disease-related parameters were collected. Kaplan-Meier curves were used to compare survival time. Cox proportional hazards function and the hazard ratio were used to identify adjusted prognostic predictors., Results: The results showed that the average annual incidence in Beijing alone was 0.38 cases/100,000 person-years and the mean age of onset was 48.88 ± 11.35 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 48.17-49.85) years. The median survival time from onset to death/tracheostomy was 58.89 ± 33.03 (95% CI: 51.46-63.84) months. In the adjusted Cox proportional hazard model, age of onset, diagnosis delay, rate of disease progression (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Functional Rating Scale Revised decline [points/month]), and body mass index all had an independent effect on survival in ALS., Conclusions: Our study provides information on epidemiology, clinical features, and survival factors of patients with ALS in China. Atherosclerosis (As) is a chronic cardiovascular disease characterized by abnormal of lipid accumulation and cholesterol efflux. The present study aimed to investigate whether the micro-RNA (miR)-200b-3p could exacerbate As by promoting lipid accumulation and inhibiting cholesterol efflux via ATP-binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1) in macrophage-derived foam cells. Blood samples from 30 patients with As and 30 healthy people were collected at Quanzhou First Hospital. RAW264.7 cells were used to establish foam cells using oxidized low-density lipoprotein. The expression of miR-200b-3p and ABCA1 was evaluated by reverse transcription quantitative PCR and western blotting. Lipid accumulation was analyzed by Oil Red O staining and cholesterol content was assessed by ELISA. A targeting relationship between miR-200b-3p and ABCA1 was demonstrated by luciferase reporter assays. Compared with healthy volunteers and RAW264.7 cells, the expression level of miR-200b-3p was significantly increased whereas the expression level of ABCA1 was significantly decreased in patients with As and foam cells. Furthermore, miR-200b-3p expression was negatively correlated with ABCA1 expression in the blood of the patients with As. Lipid content was significantly decreased and cholesterol efflux was significantly increased in foam cells transfected with the miR-200b-3p inhibitor compared with inhibitor control cells. In addition, ABCA1 was shown to be targeted by miR-200b-3p. Furthermore, the lipid content in foam cells transfected with the miR-200b-3p inhibitor and small interfering-ABCA1 was significantly increased, while the cholesterol efflux was significantly decreased compared with foam cells transfected with the miR-200b-3p inhibitor. Pressure is a unique thermodynamic variable to explore the phase competitions and novel phases inaccessible at ambient conditions. The resistive switching material GaTa 4 Se 8 displays several quantum phases under pressure, such as a J eff = 3/2 Mott insulator, a correlated quantum magnetic metal, and d -wave topological superconductivity, which has recently drawn considerable interest. Using high-pressure Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, extended X-ray absorption, transport measurements, and theoretical calculations, we reveal a complex phase diagram for GaTa 4 Se 8 at pressures exceeding 50 GPa. In this previously unattained pressure regime, GaTa 4 Se 8 ranges from a Mott insulator to a metallic phase and exhibits superconducting phases. In contrast to previous studies, we unveil a hidden correlation between the structural distortion and band gap prior to the insulator-to-metal transition, and the metallic phase shows superconductivity with structural and magnetic properties that are distinctive from the lower-pressure phase. These discoveries highlight that GaTa 4 Se 8 is a unique material to probe novel quantum phases from a structural, metallicity, magnetism, and superconductivity perspective.

Introduction: Ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury causes present challenges in the field of graft transplantation which is also a major contributor to early graft dysfunction or failure after organ transplantation. The study focuses on the effects of prolonged cold-ischemia (CI) on the autophagic activity in the graft lung in a rat orthotopic lung transplantation model., Material and Methods: Donor lungs were preserved under CI conditions for different periods. An orthotopic lung transplantation model was developed, and the lung tissues from donor lungs subjected to CI preservation and reperfusion were harvested. We evaluated the effects of different CI periods on autophagy, reactive oxygen species (ROS) and glucose consumption. Additionally, the mechanism by which prolonged CI affected autophagy was investigated through determination of the molecules related to the mTOR pathway after treatment with 3-Methyladenine (3-MA), rapamycin and an adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthase inhibitor oligomycin (OM)., Results: Prolonged CI led to increased activities of key glycolytic enzymes, glucose consumption and lactic acid production. Autophagy, ROS and glucose consumption were induced in the graft lung after I/R, which reached peak levels after 6 h and was gradually decreased. Most importantly, the perfusion treatment of 3-MA or OM decreased ROS level and autophagy, but increased the extent of mTOR phosphorylation, while the perfusion treatment of rapamycin induced ROS and autophagy., Conclusion: Taken together, autophagy mediated by a prolonged CI preservation affects the glucose consumption and ROS production in the graft lung via the mTOR signaling pathway., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Inc. Using the constrained-path quantum Monte Carlo method, we systematically study the half-filled Hubbard model on AA-stacked honeycomb lattice. Our simulations demonstrate that a dominant chiral d + id wave superconductivity can be induced by a perpendicular electric field. At a fixed electric field, the effective pairing interaction of chiral d + id superconductivity exhibits an increasing behavior with increasing the on-site Coulomb interaction. We attribute the electric field-induced d + id superconductivity to an increased density of states near the Fermi energy and robust antiferromagnetic spin correlation upon turning on electric field. Our results strongly suggest that the AA-stacked graphene system is a good candidate for chiral d + id superconductor.

The realization of ultracold polar molecules in laboratories has pushed physics and chemistry to new realms. In particular, these polar molecules offer scientists unprecedented opportunities to explore chemical reactions in the ultracold regime where quantum effects become profound. However, a key question about how two-body losses depend on quantum correlations in interacting many-body systems remains open so far. Here, we present a number of universal relations that directly connect two-body losses to other physical observables, including the momentum distribution and density correlation functions. These relations, which are valid for arbitrary microscopic parameters, such as the particle number, the temperature, and the interaction strength, unfold the critical role of contacts, a fundamental quantity of dilute quantum systems, in determining the reaction rate of quantum reactive molecules in a many-body environment. To find potential alkaline-earth metal-doped aromatic superconductors and clarify the origin of superconductivity in metal-doped phenanthrene (PHN) systems, we have systematically investigated the crystal and electronic structures of bivalent metal (Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba)-doped PHNs by first-principles calculations. The results show that only Ba 1.5 PHN can satisfy the conditions of both thermodynamic stability and metallization. We predicted that Ba 1.5 PHN is superconducting with the critical temperature of 5.3 K. Based on the metal atomic radius and electronegativity and combined with monovalent metal- and trivalent metal-doped PHNs, the relations among charge transfer, metallization, and superconductivity were analyzed. The results indicate that the electronegativity of the metal element rather than the atomic radius is predominant in the charge transfer and superconductivity of metal-doped phenanthrene.

At low temperature, collective excitations of one-dimensional (1D) interacting fermions exhibit spin-charge separation, a unique feature predicted by the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) theory, but a rigorous understanding remains challenging. Using the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA) formalism, we analytically derive universal properties of a 1D repulsive spin-1/2 Fermi gas with arbitrary interaction strength. We show how spin-charge separation emerges from the exact TBA formalism, and how it is disrupted by the interplay between the two degrees of freedom that brings us beyond the TLL paradigm. Based on the exact low-lying excitation spectra, we further evaluate the spin and charge dynamical structure factors (DSFs). The peaks of the DSFs exhibit distinguishable propagating velocities of spin and charge as functions of interaction strength, which can be observed by Bragg spectroscopy with ultracold atoms.

Amyloid beta (Aβ) peptide 40 enhances the activation of receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) in immune-inflammatory diseases. RAGE exhibits several effects in the setting of numerous cardiovascular events. We hypothesized that the Aβ40/RAGE pathway is involved in the osteoblastic differentiation of the valvular interstitial cell (VIC) phenotype, and RAGE knockout intervention could reduce the calcification of aortic valve interstitial cells (AVICs) by inhibiting the extracellular-regulated kinase1/2 (ERK1/2)/nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB) signaling pathway. To test this hypothesis, the activation of Aβ40/RAGE pathway in human calcific AVs was evaluated with immunohistochemical staining. Cultured calcific VIC models were used in vitro. The VICs were stimulated using Aβ40, with or without RAGE small interfering ribonucleic acid (siRNA), and ERK1/2 and NF-κB inhibitors for analysis. Our data revealed that Aβ40 induced the ERK1/2/NF-κB signaling pathway and osteoblastic differentiation of AVICs via the RAGE pathway in vitro.

Development of Keap1-Nrf2 interaction inhibitors is a promising strategy for the discovery of therapeutic agents against oxidative stress-mediated diseases. Two motifs of Nrf2, ETGE and DLG motif, are responsible for Keap1-Nrf2 binding. Previously, ETGE peptide or ETGE-derived peptide-based approaches were used to detect Keap1-Nrf2 interaction; however, these approaches are not able to monitor Keap1-DLG motif binding. We first report here a novel Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) approach to detect the protein-protein interaction of full length Keap1 and Nrf2. In our assay, the test compounds can target either ETGE or DLG binding site, therefore facilitating the exploration of diverse Keap1-Nrf2 inhibitors. Three FDA-approved drugs, zafirlukast, dutasteride and ketoconazole, were found to inhibit the Keap1-Nrf2 interaction with IC 50 of 5.87, 2.81 and 1.67 μM, respectively. Additionally, these three drugs also activated Nrf2 pathway in neuroblasts and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-challenged mice. Optical excitation, subsequent energy transfer, and emission are fundamental to many physical problems. Optical antennas are ideal candidates for manipulating these processes. We extend energy transfer to second- and third-harmonic (SH and TH) fields through the collaborative susceptibility χ ( n ) ( n = 1, 2, 3) resonances of nonlinear optical antennas. Hollow gold stars, with a broadband response covering the fundamental, SH, and TH frequencies, are synthesized as nonlinear antennas. Harmonic resonance energy transfer through a χ (3) → χ (1) collaboration is revealed. A χ (3) → χ (2) collaboration is uncovered, with largely enhanced SH radiation demonstrated by exciting the three resonances at the fundamental, SH, and TH frequencies. A theoretical model of the effective nonlinear susceptibilities is proposed to calculate the efficiencies of the two nonlinear energy transfer processes.

Plasmonic Fano resonance has attracted extensive attention due to its many applications, including plasmonic sensing, electromagnetically induced transparency, light trapping and stopping, due to its narrow linewidth and asymmetric spectral shape. However, many metal nanostructures are designed with complex geometries to generate Fano resonance and few of them can support a deep Fano dip. Herein we report on the strengthening of the Fano resonance on silicon-supported Au nanoplates through the formation of (Au nanosphere)-(Au nanoplate) heterodimers. The deposition of the Au nanosphere on the top can greatly strengthen the substrate-induced Fano resonance of the Au nanoplate with a deep dip. We also observe that the replacement of the Au nanosphere with a Au nanocube can suppress the excitation of the Fano resonance in the heterodimer. When the sharp corners and edges of the nanocubes gradually become rounded, the Fano resonance appears again with increasing asymmetry. Both the dip depth and wavelength of the Fano resonance can be independently tailored by varying the nanosphere diameter and the nanoplate thickness, respectively. We believe that our results provide an attractive and facile platform for modulating Fano dips and constructing Fano resonance-based devices.

Objective: This study aims to analyze the prevalence of dyslipidemia and identify the cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk stratification among older adults living in Quanzhou, China's southeast coastal region, where the ancient Maritime Silk Road starts. Methods: A population-based cross-sectional survey of 2,018 adults was conducted in 60-98-year-old residents in Quanzhou from September 2016 to March 2018 using multistage stratified cluster random sampling. The 10-year CVD risk was also estimated by applying the Chinese model recommended by the Chinese Guidelines for Prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases. Results: The overall prevalence of dyslipidemia among older adults was 56.8%. The prevalence of high total cholesterol (TC), high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and high triglyceride (TG) were 8.4%, 13.9%, 23.1% and 11.4%, respectively. The mean levels of TC, LDL-C, HDL-C and TG were 5.12±1.18, 3.37±0.81, 1.03±0.27 and 1.65±0.76 mmol/L, respectively. Older adults had low risk, moderate risk and high risk for CVD, which were 49.7%, 36.8% and 13.5%, respectively. Age, body mass index and abdominal obesity were significantly associated with the risk of increasing LDL-C levels and were positively correlated to CVD risk. Conclusion: The prevalence of high TC, high LDL-C, low HDL-C and high TG was relatively low among older adults in Quanzhou, but their lipid levels were high. Approximately half of the elderly adults had moderate or high CVD risk. In hybrid organic/inorganic perovskites, the majority of charge carriers are large polarons. Slow recombination of the large polarons underlies long carrier lifetime and diffusion length, crucial to optoelectronic applications of the perovskites. However, microscopic mechanisms by which the large polarons recombine remain largely unknown. Here we propose a theoretical model to elucidate radiative recombination of large polarons. Six annihilation pathways are identified which involve the formation of mobile and immobile 'dying pairs', both responsible for charge recombination. The formation probability of the 'dying pair' and the corresponding annihilation rate can be estimated. The product of the formation probability and the annihilate rate gives rise to recombination rate along each pathway and weighted sum of the recombination rates yields an overall rate of radiative recombination in perovskites. The theory sheds light on the physical mechanism by which large polarons recombine via the formation of the dying pairs, assisted by thermal activation and quantum tunneling. The predictions from the theory in general agree well to corresponding experimental measurements on monomolecular and bimolecular recombination rates as well as peak frequency of photoluminescence spectrum.

We study the phenomena of overlapping of Kondo clouds in an open triple quantum dots (OTQDs) system by using the dissipaton equation of motion (DEOM) theory. Motivated by the long-rang interaction of the TQDs system demonstrated in Cheng et al (2017 Phys. Rev. B 95 155417), we present a comprehensive picture of the long-range overlapping behavior of Kondo clouds via investigation of the spectral functions, spin-spin correlation, dot occupancies and susceptibility. For the configuration [Formula: see text], a conduction electron peak occurs in the spectral function of intermediate QD in the Kondo regime. This peak results from the overlapping of the two Kondo clouds forming from between the two peripheral QDs and leads, enhances with decreasing temperature and increasing dot-lead coupling. Both the spin-spin correlations between the two adjacent QDs and the two peripheral QDs own negative values. It also confirms the physical picture of the overlapping between left and right Kondo clouds via the intermediate QD. To understand the physical insight, we examine also the electron occupacies and the spectral functions, with their dependence on the temperature and dot-lead coupling. In addition, a distinct nonmonotonic behavior of the susceptibility associated with the Kondo clouds is characterized.

Elongated plasmonic nanoparticles have been extensively explored over the past two decades. However, in comparison with the dipolar plasmon mode that has attracted the most interest, much less attention has been paid to multipolar plasmon modes because they are usually thought to be "dark modes", which are unable to interact with far-field light efficiently. Herein, we report on an intriguing far-field scattering phenomenon, colour routing, based on longitudinal multipolar plasmon modes supported by high-aspect-ratio single Ag nanorods. Taking advantage of the distinct far-field behaviours of the odd and even multipolar plasmon modes, we demonstrate two types of colour routing, where the incident white light can be scattered into several beams with different colours as well as different propagation directions. Because of the narrow linewidths of the longitudinal multipolar plasmon modes, there is little spectral overlap between the adjacent peaks, giving rise to outstanding colour selectivity. Our experimental results and theoretical model provide a simple yet effective picture for understanding the far-field behaviour of the longitudinal multipolar plasmon modes and the resultant colour routing phenomenon. Moreover, the outstanding colour routing capability of the high-aspect-ratio Ag nanorods enables nanoscale optical components with simple geometries for controlling the propagation of light below the diffraction limit of light., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no conflict of interest.

The magnetic plasmons of three-dimensional nanostructures have unique optical responses and special significance for optical nanoresonators and nanoantennas. In this study, we have successfully synthesized colloidal Au and AuAg nanocups with a well-controlled asymmetric geometry, tunable opening sizes, and normalized depths ( h/ b, where h is depth and b is the height of the templating PbS nanooctahedrons), variable magnetic plasmon resonance, and largely enhanced second-harmonic generation (SHG). The most-efficient SHG of the bare Au nanocups is experimentally observed when the normalized depth h/ b is adjusted to ∼0.78-0.79. We find that the average magnetic field enhancement is maximized at h/ b = ∼0.65 and reveal that the maximal SHG can be attributed to the joint action of the optimized magnetic plasmon resonance and the "lightning-rod effect" of the Au nanocups. Furthermore, we demonstrate for the first time that the AuAg heteronanocups prepared by overgrowth of Ag on the Au nanocups can synergize the magnetic and electric plasmon resonances for nonlinear enhancement. By the tailoring of the dual resonances at the fundamental excitation and second-harmonic wavelengths, the far-field SHG intensity of the AuAg nanocups is enhanced 21.8-fold compared to that of the bare Au nanocups. These findings provide a strategy for the design of nonlinear optical nanoantennas based on magnetic plasmon resonances and can lead to diverse applications ranging from nanophotonics to biological spectroscopy.

To clarify the charge transfer effect on Raman spectra of aromatic hydrocarbons, we investigate the Raman shifts of phenanthrene, p-terphenyl, and anthracene and their negatively charged counterparts by using density functional theory. For the three molecules, upon charge increasing, the computed Raman peaks generally shift down with the exception of a few shifting up. The characteristic Raman modes in the 0-1000 cm -1 region persist up, while some high-frequency ones change dramatically with three charges transferred. The calculated Raman shifts for one- and two-electron transfer are in agreement with the measured Raman spectra, and in accordance to the stoichiometric ratios 1:1 and 2:1 of the metal atom and aromatic hydrocarbon molecule in recent experimental and theoretical studies. Our theoretical results provide the fundamental information to elucidate the Raman shifts and the stoichiometric ratios for alkali-metal-doped aromatic hydrocarbons.

Regulatory T cells (Tregs) mediate immunosuppressive signals that can contribute to the progression of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Interleukin-33 (IL-33) is defined as an 'alarmin', an endogenous factor that is expressed during tissue and cell damage, which has been shown to promote Treg proliferation in non-lymphoid organs. However, the interaction between IL-33 and Tregs in the HNSCC tumor microenvironment remains uncertain. In this study, we examined IL-33 + and Foxp3 + cells by immunohistochemistry in 68 laryngeal squamous cell cancer patients, followed by functional analysis of IL-33 in Tregs. In addition, the suppressive function of Tregs was assessed by cell proliferation assays. The level of stromal IL-33 was significantly upregulated in advanced versus early stage HNSCC patients and positively correlated with Foxp3 + Treg infiltration as well as a poor prognosis. ST2 is regarded as the only receptor of IL-33. Infiltrated ST2-expressing Tregs were responsive to IL-33, and the percentage of Tregs was increased upon IL-33 stimulation. Functional investigation demonstrated that IL-33 increased the proportion of Foxp3 + GATA3 + Tregs and improved the suppressive functions of Tregs by inducing IL-10 and TGF-β1 as well as decreasing the proliferation of responder T cells. Blockade of ST2 abrogated the immunosuppression caused by IL-33. Our data demonstrate that stromal IL-33 both expands the Treg population and enhances their functions in the tumor microenvironment. Furthermore, stromal IL-33 has prognostic value for tumor progression. Thus, stromal IL-33 is a potential target for future HNSCC immunotherapy.

To explore more novel superconductors, we have synthesized the potassium-doped p-quaterphenyl by an annealing or just a pestling process. The Meissner effect with critical temperatures ranging from 3.5 to 120 K is found by the magnetic susceptibility measurements in doped samples. The primary superconducting phase with a critical temperature of 7.2 K can be duplicated in the annealed and pestled samples. The charge transfer from metal to molecule is confirmed from the Raman scattering measurements. The X-ray diffraction analysis suggests that the low-temperature superconducting phase is due to the two-electron doping, whereas the high-temperature one corresponds to the high doping content. The occurrence of superconductivity in potassium-doped p-quaterphenyl supports the chain link organic molecules as promising candidates for high-temperature superconductors. This work also provides a simple method for synthesizing organic superconductors by pestling without annealing.

Quantum tunneling plays an important role in coupled plasmonic nanocavities with ultrasmall gap distances. It can lead to intriguing applications such as plasmon mode excitation, hot carrier generation, and construction of ultracompact electro-optic devices. Molecular junctions bridging plasmonic nanocavities can provide a tunneling channel at moderate gap distances and therefore allow for the facile fabrication of quantum plasmonic devices. Herein we report on the large-scale bottom-up fabrication of molecular junction-bridged plasmonic nanocavities formed from Au nanoplate-Au nanosphere heterodimers. When the molecular junction turns from insulating to conductive, a distinct spectral change is observed, together with the emergence of a high-order charge transfer plasmon mode. The evolution of the electron tunneling-induced plasmon mode also greatly affects the Fano resonance feature in the scattering spectrum of the individual heterodimers. The molecular conductance at optical frequencies is estimated. The molecular junction-assisted electron tunneling is further verified by the reduced surface-enhanced Raman intensities of the molecules in the plasmonic nanocavity. We believe that our results provide an interesting system that can boost the investigation on the use of molecular junctions to modulate quantum plasmon resonances and construct molecular plasmonic devices.

To identify and analyze the constituents in rat serum after oral administration of Zhitong Huazheng capsule (ZTHZC), and provide a reference for its further research on pharmacodynamics material basis. Female Wistar rats were selected as experimental animals, and received intragastric administration of ZTHZC at a dose of 1.5 g·kg⁻¹. After the serum samples were collected, the absorbed prototype components in rat serum were identified and analyzed by using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time-of-flight/mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF/MS) combined with multivariate statistical analysis．The results showed, a total of fifteen absorbed constituents were identified, all of which were prototype components, including Danshensu, salvianolic acid A, B, C, D, 9,12-dihydroxy-15-nonadecanoicacid, linoleic acid, ethyl palmitoleate, tetrahydropalmatine, fumarate A, astragaloside A, astragaloside II, saponin, locustin and luteolin. Hao Jia Xu Re Qing Granules (HJ), is an effective clinically used antipyretic based on traditional Chinese medicine. Although its antipyretic therapeutic effectiveness is obvious, its therapeutic mechanism has not been comprehensively explored yet. In this research, we first identified potential biomarkers which may be relevant for the antipyretic effect of HJ based on urine metabolomics using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF-MS). A rat model of fever was established using the yeast-induced febrile response. Total-ion-current metabolic profiles of different groups were acquired and the data were processed by multivariate statistical analysis-partial least-squares discriminant analysis. As envisioned, the results revealed changes of urine metabolites related to the antipyretic effect. Fourteen potential biomarkers were selected from the urine samples based on the results of Student's t-test, "shrinkage t", variable importance in projection and partial least-squares discriminant analysis. N-Acetylleucine, kynurenic acid, indole-3-ethanol, nicotinuric acid, pantothenic acid and tryptophan were the most significant biomarkers found in the urine samples, and may be crucially related to the antipyretic effect of HJ. Consequently, we propose the hypothesis that the significant antipyretic effect the HJ may be related to the inhibition of tryptophan metabolism. Phenyl molecules are proposed as potential high-temperature superconductors due to exhibiting interesting properties. Here, we report the discovery of superconductivity with the critical temperature (Tc) of ∼7.2 Kelvin in potassium (K)-doped biphenyl (C12H10). The dc magnetic susceptibility measurements provide solid evidence for the presence of the Meissner effect in KxC12H10. The Raman spectra detected bipolaronic characteristics in this superconducting state, which are proposed to account for the electron pairing. Theoretical simulations provided the information of the crystal structure of KxC12H10. Combining XRD data with formation energy, we suggest that the superconducting phase corresponds to K2C12H10 or with a small charge fluctuation in a layered structure. The discovery of superconductivity in K-doped biphenyl vastly expands the potential applications in the superconducting field.

Objective: Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) is an animal model commonly used in research on the acute phase of multiple sclerosis (MS), but studies on the pathology and pathogenesis of EAE with a long disease course are seldom conducted. Besides its antioxidant properties, the comprehensive mechanisms through which α-lipoic acid (LA) affects EAE remain obscure. We here conducted the study to explore the possible mechanisms., Materials and Methods: In this study, the following methods were used for investigating the effects of LA on long-term EAE: hematoxylin-eosin staining (HE) and electron microscopic examinations of pathological changes; Western blotting of β-amyloid precursor protein (β-APP) and myelin basic protein (MBP); Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β), superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA) as well as flow cytometry of CD4+CD25+FoxP3+ regulatory T cells (Tregs)., Results: The results showed: (1) diverse pathological features of long-term relapsing-remitting EAE; (2) relatively increased MBP and reduced β-APP expression in LA recipients 180 days after onset; (3) down-regulated TNF-α and up-regulated TGF-β levels in LA recipients 7 days after onset; (4) lower MDA and higher SOD levels in LA recipients 180 days after onset; (5) increased Treg levels in LA recipients 7 days after onset., Conclusions: Aside from oxidative stress, LA possessed anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects on EAE. LA might be a promising candidate for MS treatment.

We use numerically unbiased methods to show that the one-dimensional Hubbard model with periodically distributed on-site interactions already contains the minimal ingredients to display the phenomenon of magnetoresistance; i.e., by applying an external magnetic field, a dramatic enhancement on the charge transport is achieved. We reach this conclusion based on the computation of the Drude weight and of the single-particle density of states, applying twisted boundary condition averaging to reduce finite-size effects. The known picture that describes the giant magnetoresistance, by interpreting the scattering amplitudes of parallel or antiparallel polarized currents with local magnetizations, is obtained without having to resort to different entities; itinerant and localized charges are indistinguishable.

Graphene and fullerene, two types of C allotropes with very different structures and properties, have attracted considerable attention from the scientific community as new forms of carbon for several decades. It will be a great advantage to combine the geometrical features of the two. Herein, we report a series of novel two-dimensional carbon allotropes that possess fullerene-like hollow structures (bubbles) embedded in a graphene sheet. These carbon allotropes are both thermally and dynamically stable. Calculations using hybrid functionals show that these two-dimensional carbon allotropes could be metals or semiconductors depending on the size and the pattern of the bubbles. The band gap can be as large as 1.66 eV. Due to the unique atomic configuration, some bubble-wrap carbons have unusual negative Poisson's ratios. The combination of graphene and fullerenes provides an appealing approach to design carbon-based materials with dexterous properties. For example, the insertion of the metal atoms inside the bubbles may greatly enhance the functions of such materials in photovoltaics and catalysis.

Light-element compounds hold great promise of high critical temperature superconductivity judging from the theoretical perspective. A hydrogen-rich material, benzene, is such a kind of candidate but also an organic compound. A series of first-principles calculations are performed on the electronic structures, dynamics properties, and electron-phonon interactions of solid benzene at high pressures. Benzene is found to be dynamically stable in the pressure range of 180-200 GPa and to exhibit superconductivity with a maximum transition temperature of 20 K at 195 GPa. The phonon modes of carbon atoms are identified to mainly contribute to the electron-phonon interactions driving this superconductivity. The predicted superconductivity in this simplest pristine hydrocarbon shows a common feature in aromatic hydrocarbons and also makes it a bridge to organic and hydrogen-rich superconductors.

Until very recently, helium had remained the last naturally occurring element that was known not to form stable solid compounds. Here we propose and demonstrate that there is a general driving force for helium to react with ionic compounds that contain an unequal number of cations and anions. The corresponding reaction products are stabilized not by local chemical bonds but by long-range Coulomb interactions that are significantly modified by the insertion of helium atoms, especially under high pressure. This mechanism also explains the recently discovered reactivity of He and Na under pressure. Our work reveals that helium has the propensity to react with a broad range of ionic compounds at pressures as low as 30 GPa. Since most of the Earth's minerals contain unequal numbers of positively and negatively charged atoms, our work suggests that large quantities of He might be stored in the Earth's lower mantle.

Directional optical nanoantennas are often realized by nanostructured systems with ingenious or complex designs. Herein we report on the realization of directional scattering of visible light from a simple configuration made of single Ag nanorods supported on Si substrates, where the incident light can be routed toward the two flanks of each nanorod. Such an intriguing far-field scattering behavior, which has not been investigated so far, is proved to result from the near-field coupling between high-aspect-ratio Ag nanorods and high-refractive-index Si substrates. A simple and intuitive model is proposed, where the complicated plasmon resonance is found to be equivalent to several vertically aligned electric dipoles oscillating in phase, to understand the far-field properties of the system. The interference among the electric dipoles results in wavefront reshaping and sidewise light routing in a similar manner to the broadside antenna described in the traditional antenna theory, allowing for the naming of these Si-supported Ag nanorods as "broadside nanoantennas". We have carried out comprehensive experiments to understand the physical origins behind and the affecting factors on the directional scattering behavior of such broadside nanoantennas.

In this study, we compared the efficacy of mitoxantrone in combination with intermediate-dose cytarabine (HAM) with that of high-dose cytarabine alone (HiDAC) as consolidation regimens in non-acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) acute myeloid leukemia patients with favorable and intermediate cytogenetics. A total of 62 patients from Shenzhen People's Hospital were enrolled in this study. All patients enrolled received standard induction chemotherapy and achieved the first complete remission (CR1). In these patients, 24 received HiDAC and 38 received HAM as consolidation. The median relapse free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) were similar between these two consolidation regimens. Even in subgroup analysis according to risk stratification, the combination regimen conferred no benefit in longterm outcome in patients with favorable or intermediate cytogenetics. However, in patients receiving HAM regimen, the lowest neutrophil count was lower, neutropenic period longer, neutropenic fever rate higher, and more platelet transfusion support was required. HAM group also tended to have higher rate of sepsis than HiDAC group. According to our results, we suggest that combination treatment with mitoxantrone and intermediate-dose cytarabine has limited value as compared to HiDAC, even in young non-APL AML patients with favorable and intermediate cytogenetics.

Colloidal disk-like and sphere-like MoS 2 nanoantennas are synthesized. They consist of curly and interlaced 2D nanosheets. The resonance peak of the MoS 2 nanoantennas can be tuned from 500 to 900 nm by adjusting the size and shape. The strong magnetic and electric resonances of the dielectric antennas are revealed by theoretical calculations with Mie theory. The second harmonic generation (SHG) of the exfoliated nanosheets and the synthesized nanodisks and nanospheres is investigated and compared by scanning the excitation laser wavelength. SHG enhancement of 52 fold is observed for the spherical nanoantennas at 400 nm, which is attributed to the nanoantenna-enhanced two-photon resonance excitation of the D exciton of MoS 2 monolayers. Moreover, ReS 2 @Au plasmon-dielectric hybrid nanoantennas are also synthesized. The SHG of Au nanoparticles is enhanced 8.5 times by the coupling of the two types of nanoantennas. This new class of optical nanoantennas consisting of 2D materials and exhibiting unique linear and nonlinear optical responses will bring promising applications ranging from nonlinear photonics to photochemistry.

In this study, the effect of four xyloketals 1-4 on store-operated calcium entry (SOCE) was investigated in primary distal pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cells (PASMCs) isolated from mice. The results showed that xyloketal A (1), an unusual ketal with C-3 symmetry, exhibited strong SOCE blocking activity. Secretion of interleukin-8 (IL-8) was also inhibited by xyloketal A. The parallel artificial membrane permeability assay (PAMPA) of 1-4 suggested that these xyloketals penetrated easily through the cell membrane. Moreover, the molecular docking study of xyloketal A with activation region of the stromal interaction molecule (STIM) 1 and the calcium release-activated calcium modulator (ORAI) 1 (STIM1-ORAI1) protein complex, the key domain of SOCE, revealed that xyloketal A exhibited a noncovalent interaction with the key residue lysine 363 (LYS363) in the identified cytosolic regions in STIM1-C. These findings provided useful information about xyloketal A as a SOCE inhibitor for further evaluation.
