This article describes a lethal case of leptospirosis that occurred in Southern Russia. The Leptospira strain was isolated and characterized using a microscopic agglutination test, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, targeted PCR, and high-throughput sequencing. We show that molecular and mass-spectrometry methods can be an alternative to conventional methods of leptospirosis diagnostics and Leptospira study, which require highly qualified staff and can be performed only at specialized laboratories. We also report the first whole genome of L . interrogans isolated in Russia.

Seventy-eight cases of enterovirus infection, including 25 neuroinfections, occurred in Rostov-on-Don, Russia, during May-June 2013. The outbreak was caused by an enterovirus A type 71 (EV-A71) subgenotype C4 lineage that spread to neighboring countries from China ≈3 years earlier. Enterovirus associated neuroinfection may emerge in areas with a preceding background circulation of EV-A71 with apparently asymptomatic infection.

This article analyses the approaches to the formation of specific treatment of acute poisoning in the various countries. The authors present a systematic review of scientific publications about the formation of reserves of antidote agents at medical institutions of the Russian Federation, the US, Canada, France, Spain, Greece, Norway, Czech Republic, Taiwan and Poland. A search for a variety of databases, as well as by reviewing reference lists of publications on the subject of "stockpiling antidote means". It is concluded that the antidote provision at health care institutions in different countries is insufficient. State of affairs with the formation of antidote stocks is better at hospitals of Czech Republic, France and Spain. To determine the range and volume of the stock of fixed assets necessary antidote coordination and approval of the list and the number of mandatory for every medical institution antidotes.

The results of the epidemiological analysis of the outbreak of hemorrhagic fever which was caused by Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus and occurred during the period of July 3-19, 1999, in the Oblivskaya district of Rostov Province are presented. The specific epidemiological features of the outbreak have been determined. The possible versions of the appearance of the focus of infection and the role of Ixodes ticks in the circulation of the infective agent are discussed.

Effects of chronic administration of xenobiotics pro-oxidants on the state of periodontal tissues, level of free-radical oxidation of lipids, and antioxidant provision were studied. Diphenin and delagil were found to promote biochemical and morphological changes similar to the manifestations observed in periodontitis. A conclusion is made about an important role of nonenzymatic free-radical oxidation of lipids and biopolymers in the pathogenesis of periodontitis. The principal stages of contribution of autooxidation to the parodontogenesis are presented.

Fifty-three males suffering from aspermatogenic sterility were exposed to low-intensity laser irradiation. The results suggest a conclusion on a stimulating effect of He-Ne laser on testicular function. Relevant laser stimulation is thought to hold promise for clinical purposes.

Since ordinary histological laboratories have no special equipment, semi-thin epoxide embedded sections, to perfectly suitable to realize the resolving capacity of the light optic are not widely used in histological practice. However, even in an ordinary histological laboratory it is possible to master the method of their production. A special device is suggested to fix glass knives in the rotational microtome MPC-2. Simultaneously, a number of suggestions and recommendations are given as to certain specificities for obtaining serial semi-thin sections and the method for their staining. Besides, an original method is offered for producing film preparations by means of mild tissue compression in the process of polymerization in epoxide resin. This method allows not only to study some features in the composition of complex three-dimentional objects, but to obtain a series of semi-thin sections from the film preparation to reveal intimal interconnections between certain structural components.

The authors analyse their many-year experience gained in the treatment of patients with foot deformities of various origins, carried out at the traumatology clinic of the Kuibyshev D. I. Ulyanov Medical Institute. New surgical techniques for the treatment of congenital talipes, valgus deformity of the first thumb combined with transverse platypodia, paralytic loose, paralytic pes planus and calcaneus are described. The causes of valgus deformities in the patients with infantile cerebral paralysis after achillotomy are discussed on the basis of EMG data. The described methods are superior to the routine ones.

By means of transmissive and scanning electron microscopy 103 gingival bioptates in practically healthy persons at the age of 18-80 years have been studied. At ageing essential changes take place in all structural elements of the epithelium. The basal membrane is intermittent and loose. In cytoplasm of the cells of the basal layer epithelium the amount of microfilaments increases essentially, and as a result it becomes electron opaque. Tonofibrillar fasciculi of the spinous layer cells are fragmented, their contours are indistinct. In cytoplasm of the granular layer cells amount of keratohyalin granules increases, their size becomes large and their typical form is lost. In cytoplasm of the basal, spinous and granular layer cells the amount of organells decreases. Mitochondria acquire the appearance of electron translucent cavities with discomplexic, and sometimes, destroyed cristae. Rather great changes occur in intercellular interrelations. In all the layers some intercellular spaces are widen, in the spaces formed isolated desmosomes and other debries of cellular structures are formed. Sharp changes of microrelief of the granular layer epitheliocytes are observed. The ultrastructural rearrangements of epitheliocytes, revealed in the human gingiva, demonstrate certain disturbances in keratinization processes, in mechanical firmness, as well as in barrier function of the epithelial layer.
