Among trichothecenes, T-2 toxin is the most toxic fungal secondary metabolite produced by different Fusarium species. Moreover, T-2 is the most common cause of poisoning that results from the consumption of contaminated cereal-based food and feed reported among humans and animals. The food and feed most contaminated with T-2 toxin is made from wheat, barley, rye, oats, and maize. After exposition or ingestion, T-2 is immediately absorbed from the alimentary tract or through the respiratory mucosal membranes and transported to the liver as a primary organ responsible for toxin's metabolism. Depending on the age, way of exposure, and dosage, intoxication manifests by vomiting, feed refusal, stomach necrosis, and skin irritation, which is rarely observed in case of mycotoxins intoxication. In order to eliminate T-2 toxin, various decontamination techniques have been found to mitigate the concentration of T-2 toxin in agricultural commodities. However, it is believed that 100% degradation of this toxin could be not possible. In this review, T-2 toxin toxicity, metabolism, and decontamination strategies are presented and discussed.

Background: Doxorubicin-based chemotherapy after splenectomy remains the standard of care for hemangiosarcoma in dogs, but prognosis is generally poor., Hypothesis/objectives: To determine clinical outcome with carboplatin chemotherapy after splenectomy compared to doxorubicin-based protocols. A secondary objective was to determine if peripheral monocyte count was associated with prognosis., Animals: Medical data from 40 dogs with histopathologically confirmed stage I or II hemangiosarcoma treated with splenectomy and carboplatin (n = 18) or doxorubicin-based protocols (n = 22) were evaluated., Methods: Retrospective study. Statistical associations were assessed using the Kaplan-Meier method for survival times and log rank analysis for differences in survival time. Demographic information and survival times were obtained via medical records. Blood monocyte counts before and after surgery were documented., Results: Median survival times were 160 days (48 to >559) and 139 days (54-975), for dogs in the carboplatin (n = 18) and doxorubicin (n = 22) groups respectively (P = .82, hazards ratio [HR] [95% CI] = 1.075 [0.56-2.07]). The median survival time for dogs whose monocyte counts decreased between splenectomy and chemotherapy initiation was 265 days, compared to 66 days for dogs with increased monocytes (P = .002, HR [95% CI] = 4.17 [1.21-14.39])., Conclusions and Clinical Importance: Carboplatin could be considered as an alternative in cases where doxorubicin might be contraindicated. Mycotoxins represent a wide range of secondary, naturally occurring and practically unavoidable fungal metabolites. They contaminate various agricultural commodities like cereals, maize, peanuts, fruits, and feed at any stage in pre- or post-harvest conditions. Consumption of mycotoxin-contaminated food and feed can cause acute or chronic toxicity in human and animals. The risk that is posed to public health have prompted the need to develop methods of analysis and detection of mycotoxins in food products. Mycotoxins wide range of structural diversity, high chemical stability, and low concentrations in tested samples require robust, effective, and comprehensible detection methods. This review summarizes current methods, such as chromatographic and immunochemical techniques, as well as novel, alternative approaches like biosensors, electronic noses, or molecularly imprinted polymers that have been successfully applied in detection and identification of various mycotoxins in food commodities. In order to highlight the significance of sampling and sample treatment in the analytical process, these steps have been comprehensively described.

COVID-19 is a respiratory disease caused by newly discovered severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The disease at first was identified in the city of Wuhan, China in December 2019. Being a human infectious disease, it causes high fever, cough, breathing problems. In some cases it can be fatal, especially in people with comorbidities like heart or kidney problems and diabetes. The current COVID-19 treatment is based on symptomatic therapy, so finding an appropriate drug against COVID-19 remains an immediate and crucial target for the global scientific community. Two main processes are thought to be responsible for the COVID-19 pathogenesis. In the early stages of infection, disease is determined mainly by virus replication. In the later stages of infection, by an excessive immune/inflammatory response, leading to tissue damage. Therefore, the main treatment options are antiviral and immunomodulatory/anti-inflammatory agents. Many clinical trials have been conducted concerning the use of various drugs in COVID-19 therapy, and many are still ongoing. The majority of trials examine drug reposition (repurposing), which seems to be a good and effective option. Many drugs have been repurposed in COVID-19 therapy including remdesivir, favipiravir, tocilizumab and baricitinib. The aim of this review is to highlight (based on existing and accessible clinical evidence on ongoing trials) the current and available promising drugs for COVID-19 and outline their characteristics.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) responsible for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was discovered in December 2019 in Wuhan, China. Since that time, the virus has spread around the world, which resulted in an announcement of the World Health Organization (WHO), dated in March 2020, that COVID-19 was a worldwide pandemic, and since then, the world has been struggling with this disease. SARS-CoV-2, similar to other RNA viruses, continually mutates, and new variants are appearing. Among large numbers of detected SARS-CoV-2 variants, only an insignificant amount of them are able to pose a risk to public health, as they are more contagious and cause more severe conditions. The emerged variants were classified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in collaboration with SARS-CoV-2 Interagency Group (SIG) according to strictly defined pattern. Variants were classified as variants of concern, variants of interest, and variants of high consequence. In the last few months, three variants of concern (B.1.1.7, B.1.351, and P.1) and four variants of interests (B.1.526, B.1.525, B.1.427/B.1.429, and P.2) were distinguished and are essential for close monitoring. This analysis summarizes the principal information concerning SARS-CoV-2 variants, such as their infectivity, severity, mutations, and immune susceptibility.

The new coronavirus began to spread around the world in late 2019. Initially, it was found only in China, but in the following days there were reported cases of infections in other countries. Subsequently, based on taxonomy, phylogeny, and accepted practice, the virus was officially designated as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). As a result of the rapid spread of SARS-CoV-2 in different countries around the world, on March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced a status change in the disease caused by this coronavirus-from an epidemic to a pandemic disease. Although the world is taking unprecedented efforts to control the spread of SARS-CoV-2, the number of confirmed cases is rising. Therefore, effective preventive measures are needed in order to limit the spread of illness. The prevention measures are mainly based on information on the virus transmission routes, its environmental stability, and persistence on commonly touched surfaces. Social distancing, mask usage, and good hygiene practice are the most important recommendations for general public. Healthcare professionals who are directly involved in SARS-CoV-2 patients care are more exposed to virus infection and additional protection measures are necessary, including protective suits, aprons, face shields, goggles, and gloves. Due to the stability of SARS-CoV-2 on different surfaces, such as glass, paper, or wood, proper disinfection is crucial. Several studies have shown that despite the virus's stability, it is sensitive to various disinfectants, such as ethanol, isopropanol, sodium hypochlorite, or hydrogen peroxide. These findings underline the importance of having comprehensive knowledge about SARS-CoV-2 and multidirectional strategies in order to limit the spread of the virus. This review is a summary of the most important information about SARS-CoV-2, such as its stability on different surfaces, protection strategies, and decontamination options.

The discovery of clustered, regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) and their cooperation with CRISPR-associated (Cas) genes is one of the greatest advances of the century and has marked their application as a powerful genome engineering tool. The CRISPR-Cas system was discovered as a part of the adaptive immune system in bacteria and archaea to defend from plasmids and phages. CRISPR has been found to be an advanced alternative to zinc-finger nucleases (ZFN) and transcription activator-like effector nucleases (TALEN) for gene editing and regulation, as the CRISPR-Cas9 protein remains the same for various gene targets and just a short guide RNA sequence needs to be altered to redirect the site-specific cleavage. Due to its high efficiency and precision, the Cas9 protein derived from the type II CRISPR system has been found to have applications in many fields of science. Although CRISPR-Cas9 allows easy genome editing and has a number of benefits, we should not ignore the important ethical and biosafety issues. Moreover, any tool that has great potential and offers significant capabilities carries a level of risk of being used for non-legal purposes. In this review, we present a brief history and mechanism of the CRISPR-Cas9 system. We also describe on the applications of this technology in gene regulation and genome editing; the treatment of cancer and other diseases; and limitations and concerns of the use of CRISPR-Cas9.

Pathogens are various organisms, such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, and protozoa, which can cause severe illnesses to their hosts. Throughout history, pathogens have accompanied human populations and caused various epidemics. One of the most significant outbreaks was the Black Death, which occurred in the 14th century and caused the death of one-third of Europe's population. Pathogens have also been studied for their use as biological warfare agents by the former Soviet Union, Japan, and the USA. Among bacteria and viruses, there are high priority agents that have a significant impact on public health. Bacillus anthracis , Francisella tularensis , Yersinia pestis , Variola virus, Filoviruses (Ebola, Marburg), Arenoviruses (Lassa), and influenza viruses are included in this group of agents. Outbreaks and infections caused by them might result in social disruption and panic, which is why special operations are needed for public health preparedness. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria that significantly impede treatment and recovery of patients are also valid threats. Furthermore, recent events related to the massive spread of Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) are an example of how virus-induced diseases cannot be ignored. The impact of outbreaks, such as SARS-CoV-2, have had far-reaching consequences beyond public health. The economic losses due to lockdowns are difficult to estimate, but it would take years to restore countries to pre-outbreak status. For countries affected by the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19), their health systems have been overwhelmed, resulting in an increase in the mortality rate caused by diseases or injuries. Furthermore, outbreaks, such as SARS-CoV-2, will induce serious, wide-ranging (and possibly long-lasting) psychological problems among, not only health workers, but ordinary citizens (this is due to isolation, quarantine, etc.). The aim of this paper is to present the most dangerous pathogens, as well as general characterizations, mechanisms of action, and treatments.

Mycotoxins are toxic fungal secondary metabolities formed by a variety of fungi (moulds) species. Hundreds of potentially toxic mycotoxins have been already identified and are considered a serious problem in agriculture, animal husbandry, and public health. A large number of food-related products and beverages are yearly contaminated by mycotoxins, resulting in economic welfare losses. Mycotoxin indoor environment contamination is a global problem especially in less technologically developed countries. There is an ongoing effort in prevention of mould growth in the field and decontamination of contaminated food and feed in order to protect human and animal health. It should be emphasized that the mycotoxins production by fungi (moulds) species is unavoidable and that they are more toxic than pesticides. Human and animals are exposed to mycotoxin via food, inhalation, or contact which can result in many building-related illnesses including kidney and neurological diseases and cancer. In this review, we described in detail the molecular aspects of main representatives of mycotoxins, which are serious problems for global health, such as aflatoxins, ochratoxin A, T-2 toxin, deoxynivalenol, patulin, and zearalenone.

Bee venom is a very complex mixture produced and secreted by the honeybee ( Apis mellifera ). Melittin is a major component of bee venom that accounts for about 52% of its dry mass. A vast number of studies have been dedicated to the effects of melittin's regulation of apoptosis and to the factors that induce apoptosis in various types of cancer such as breast, ovarian, prostate, lung. The latest evidence indicates its potential as a therapeutic agent in the treatment of leukaemia. The aim of our present study is to evaluate melittin's ability to induce apoptosis in leukaemia cell lines of different origin acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (CCRF-CEM) and chronic myelogenous leukaemia (K-562). We demonstrated that melittin strongly reduced cell viability in both leukaemia cell lines but not in physiological peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PMBCs). Subsequent estimated parameters (mitochondrial membrane potential, Annexin V binding and Caspases 3/7 activity) clearly demonstrated that melittin induced apoptosis in leukaemia cells. This is a very important step for research into the development of new potential anti-leukaemia as well as anticancer therapies. Further analyses on the molecular level have been also planned (analysis of proapoptotic genes expression and DNA damages) for our next research project, which will also focus on melittin.

Biological toxins are a heterogeneous group produced by living organisms. One dictionary defines them as "Chemicals produced by living organisms that have toxic properties for another organism". Toxins are very attractive to terrorists for use in acts of bioterrorism. The first reason is that many biological toxins can be obtained very easily. Simple bacterial culturing systems and extraction equipment dedicated to plant toxins are cheap and easily available, and can even be constructed at home. Many toxins affect the nervous systems of mammals by interfering with the transmission of nerve impulses, which gives them their high potential in bioterrorist attacks. Others are responsible for blockage of main cellular metabolism, causing cellular death. Moreover, most toxins act very quickly and are lethal in low doses (LD 50 < 25 mg/kg), which are very often lower than chemical warfare agents. For these reasons we decided to prepare this review paper which main aim is to present the high potential of biological toxins as factors of bioterrorism describing the general characteristics, mechanisms of action and treatment of most potent biological toxins. In this paper we focused on six most danger toxins: botulinum toxin, staphylococcal enterotoxins, Clostridium perfringens toxins, ricin, abrin and T-2 toxin. We hope that this paper will help in understanding the problem of availability and potential of biological toxins.

Thermally induced unfolding and renaturation capability of alkaline proteases (AprA) of three Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains, i.e. ATCC 27853 and two clinical isolates, was examined. Sequence analyses demonstrated a high level of aprA genes identity (99.24-99.8%) in these bacterial strains. The proteases retained 45-60% and 15% of their activity after pre-treatment at 60oC and 80oC, respectively, whereas pre-incubation at 90-95oC resulted in a higher level of activity than at 80oC. Zymography analyses and immunoblotting with AprA antiserum suggested a high thermostability and renaturation capability of the studied enzymes in comparison to another P. aeruginosa protease, elastase B. An intrinsic capability of renaturation of P. aeruginosa AprA was confirmed by fluorescence spectra of the native, thermally denatured, and renatured enzyme. The value of the fluorescence intensity of the denatured and subsequently cooled enzyme recovered to about 80% of the value of the native protein fluorescence intensity. Moreover, pre-incubation of the enzyme at 60oC and 90oC exerted only a slight effect on the intensity of absorbance and the shape of the amide I band, as demonstrated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy performed after subsequent cooling of the pre-treated enzyme. The results indicated a high renaturation capability of the P. aeruginosa AprA proteins.

It emerges from numerous experiments that LHCII, the major photosynthetic antenna complex of plants, can appear not only in the trimeric or monomeric states but also as a dimer. We address the problem whether the dimeric form of the complex is just a simple intermediate element of the trimer-monomer transformation or if it can also be a physiologically relevant molecular organization form? Dimers of LHCII were analyzed with application of native electrophoresis, time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy, and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy. The results reveal the appearance of two types of LHCII dimers: one formed by the dissociation of one monomer from the trimeric structure and the other formed by association of monomers into a distinctively different molecular organizational form, characterized by a high rate of chlorophyll excitation quenching. The hypothetical structure of such an energy quencher is proposed. The high light-induced LHCII dimerization is discussed as a potential element of the photoprotective response in plants.

The efficient and fluent operation of photosynthesis in plants relies on activity of pigment-protein complexes called antenna, absorbing light and transferring excitations toward the reaction centers. Here we show, based on the results of the fluorescence lifetime imaging analyses of single chloroplasts, that pigment-protein complexes, in dark-adapted plants, are not able to act effectively as photosynthetic antennas, due to pronounced, adverse excitation quenching. It appeared that the antenna function could be activated by a short (on a minute timescale) illumination with light of relatively low intensity, substantially below the photosynthesis saturation threshold. The low-light-induced activation of the antenna function was attributed to phosphorylation of the major accessory light-harvesting complex LHCII, based on the fact that such a mechanism was not observed in the stn7 Arabidopsis thaliana mutant, with impaired LHCII phosphorylation. Resonance Raman analysis of the photosynthetic complex LHCII, immobilized in a polyacrylamide gel, reveals that one of the protein-bound xanthophylls, assigned as violaxanthin, undergoes light-induced molecular reconfiguration. The phototransformation is selectively observed in a trimeric structure of the complex and is associated with a pronounced twisting and a trans-cis molecular configuration change of the polyene chain of the carotenoid. Among several spectral effects accompanying the reconfiguration there are ones indicating a carotenoid triplet state. Possible physiological importance of the light-induced violaxanthin reconfiguration as a mechanism associated with making the pigment available for enzymatic deepoxidation in the xanthophyll cycle is discussed.

The effect of violaxanthin and zeaxanthin, two main carotenoids of the xanthophyll cycle, on molecular organization of LHCII, the principal photosynthetic antenna complex of plants, was studied in a model system based on lipid-protein membranes, by means of analysis of 77 K chlorophyll a fluorescence and "native" electrophoresis. Violaxanthin was found to promote trimeric organization of LHCII, contrary to zeaxanthin which was found to destabilize trimeric structures. Moreover, violaxanthin was found to induce decomposition of oligomeric LHCII structures formed in the lipid phase and characterized by the fluorescence emission band at 715 nm. Both pigments promoted formation of two-component supramolecular structures of LHCII and xanthophylls. The violaxanthin-stabilized structures were composed mostly of LHCII trimers while, the zeaxanthin-stabilized supramolecular structures of LHCII showed more complex organization which depended periodically on the xanthophyll content. The effect of the xanthophyll cycle pigments on molecular organization of LHCII was analyzed based on the results of molecular modeling and discussed in terms of a physiological meaning of this mechanism. Supramolecular structures of LHCII stabilized by violaxanthin, prevent uncontrolled oligomerization of LHCII, potentially leading to excitation quenching, therefore can be considered as structures protecting the photosynthetic apparatus against energy loses at low light intensities., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Inc. The precise imaging of biomolecular entities contributes to an understanding of the relationship between their structure and function. However, the resolution of conventional infrared microscopic imaging is diffraction limited and does not exceed a few micrometres. Atomic force microscopy, on the other hand, can detect infrared absorption down to the sub-micrometer level. In the present report, we demonstrate that for multi-bilayer lipid samples containing the plant photosynthetic pigment-protein complex LHCII, the resolution of this latter technique can be better than 20 nm. Such a high resolution is attributable to two factors: (i) the relatively high infrared absorption by the complex that is integrated perpendicular to the plane of the multilayer film, and (ii) the distinctly different mechanical properties and thermal conductivity of the lipid and protein components of the sample.

The process of primary electric charge separation in photosynthesis takes place in the reaction centers, but photosynthesis can operate efficiently and fluently due to the activity of several pigment-protein complexes called antenna, which absorb light quanta and transfer electronic excitations toward the reaction centers. LHCII is the major photosynthetic pigment-protein antenna complex of plants and appears in the trimeric form. Several recent reports point to trimeric organization of LHCII as a key factor responsible for the chloroplast architecture via stabilization of granal organization of the thylakoid membranes. In the present work, we address the question of whether such an organization could also directly influence the antenna properties of this pigment-protein complex. Chlorophyll fluorescence analysis reveals that excitation energy transfer in LHCII is substantially more efficient in trimers and dissipative energy losses are higher in monomers. It could be concluded that trimers are exceptionally well suited to perform the antenna function. Possibility of fine regulation of the photosynthetic antenna function via the LHCII trimer-monomer transition is also discussed, based on the fluorescence lifetime analysis in a single chloroplast.

Solotronics, optoelectronics based on solitary dopants, is an emerging field of research and technology reaching the ultimate limit of miniaturization. It aims at exploiting quantum properties of individual ions or defects embedded in a semiconductor matrix. It has already been shown that optical control of a magnetic ion spin is feasible using the carriers confined in a quantum dot. However, a serious obstacle was the quenching of the exciton luminescence by magnetic impurities. Here we show, by photoluminescence studies on thus-far-unexplored individual CdTe dots with a single cobalt ion and CdSe dots with a single manganese ion, that even if energetically allowed, nonradiative exciton recombination through single-magnetic-ion intra-ionic transitions is negligible in such zero-dimensional structures. This opens solotronics for a wide range of as yet unconsidered systems. On the basis of results of our single-spin relaxation experiments and on the material trends, we identify optimal magnetic-ion quantum dot systems for implementation of a single-ion-based spin memory.

The absence of luminescence in the near band edge energy region of Te-anion based semiconductor nanowires grown by gold catalyst assisted molecular beam epitaxy has strongly limited their applications in the field of photonics. In this paper, an enhancement of the near band edge emission intensity from ZnTe/ZnMgTe core/shell nanowires grown on Si substrates is reported. A special role of the use of Si substrates instead of GaAs substrates is emphasized, which results in an increase of the near band edge emission intensity by at least one order of magnitude accompanied by a simultaneous reduction of the defect related luminescence. A possible explanation of this effect relies on the presence of Ga-related deep level defects in structures grown on GaAs substrates, which are absent when Si substrates are used. Monochromatic mapping of the cathodoluminescence clearly confirms that the observed emission originates, indeed, from the ZnTe/ZnMgTe core/shell nanowires, whereas individual objects are studied by means of microphotoluminescence.

In this study, Secale cereale seedlings cultivated under 0 (control), 2 or 5mM Pb(NO3)2 concentrations were used to examine alterations in the organization and functionality of chlorophyll-protein complexes in thylakoid membranes under Pb ion stress. The studies were conducted on whole leaves of rye seedlings or thylakoid membranes isolated from Pb-treated and control plants. Using non-denaturing electrophoresis, it was assessed that increasing Pb concentrations resulted in an increase in the value of the ratio of the content of LHCII oligomers (mainly trimers) to the content of LHCII monomers. The parameters of chlorophyll fluorescence induction (q(p) and q(n)) indicated that the change in the LHCII supramolecular organization in the presence of Pb ions was connected with an increase in non-photochemical fluorescence quenching. Quantification of photosynthetic pigments showed that both Pb concentrations decreased the content of chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and carotenoids. The changes in the pigment content led to a significant reduction in light absorption by antenna complexes. However, the absorption spectra showed that red light was preferentially absorbed by antenna complexes in thylakoid membranes isolated from the Pb-treated plants. Examination of fluorescence emission spectra revealed that Pb ions decreased the fluorescence quantum yield of PSII. The emission spectra of thylakoids indicated a relative increase in the intensity of fluorescence emission from the trimeric and aggregated forms of the LHCII complexes in comparison to the intensity of fluorescence emission from PSI antenna complexes under excitation at 440 nm. Simultaneously, under excitation at 470 nm, we observed a rise in fluorescence intensity from the LHCII trimer after addition of 5mM Pb as well as a decrease in fluorescence intensity from the LHCII aggregates and PSI core and LHCI antenna complexes under both Pb concentrations. Pb treatments also reduced excitation energy absorbed by chlorophyll b and carotenoids within antenna complexes and transferred to chlorophyll a species emitting at 680 nm., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier B.V. In this study, we analyzed multibilayer lipid-protein membranes composed of the photosynthetic light-harvesting complex II (LHCII; isolated from spinach [Spinacia oleracea]) and the plant lipids monogalcatosyldiacylglycerol and digalactosyldiacylglycerol. Two types of pigment-protein complexes were analyzed: those isolated from dark-adapted leaves (LHCII) and those from leaves preilluminated with high-intensity light (LHCII-HL). The LHCII-HL complexes were found to be partially phosphorylated and contained zeaxanthin. The results of the x-ray diffraction, infrared imaging microscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy revealed that lipid-LHCII membranes assemble into planar multibilayers, in contrast with the lipid-LHCII-HL membranes, which form less ordered structures. In both systems, the protein formed supramolecular structures. In the case of LHCII-HL, these structures spanned the multibilayer membranes and were perpendicular to the membrane plane, whereas in LHCII, the structures were lamellar and within the plane of the membranes. Lamellar aggregates of LHCII-HL have been shown, by fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy, to be particularly active in excitation energy quenching. Both types of structures were stabilized by intermolecular hydrogen bonds. We conclude that the formation of trans-layer, rivet-like structures of LHCII is an important determinant underlying the spontaneous formation and stabilization of the thylakoid grana structures, since the lamellar aggregates are well suited to dissipate excess energy upon overexcitation.

Overexcitation of the photosynthetic apparatus is potentially dangerous because it can cause oxidative damage. Photoprotection realized via the feedback de-excitation in the pigment-protein light-harvesting complex LHCII, embedded in the chloroplast lipid environment, was studied with use of the steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy techniques. Illumination of LHCII results in the pronounced singlet excitation quenching, demonstrated by decreased quantum yield of the chlorophyll a fluorescence and shortening of the fluorescence lifetimes. Analysis of the 77K chlorophyll a fluorescence emission spectra reveals that the light-driven excitation quenching in LHCII is associated with the intensity increase of the spectral band in the region of 700nm, relative to the principal band at 680nm. The average chlorophyll a fluorescence lifetime at 700nm changes drastically upon temperature decrease: from 1.04ns at 300K to 3.63ns at 77K. The results of the experiments lead us to conclude that: (i) the 700nm band is associated with the inter-trimer interactions which result in the formation of the chlorophyll low-energy states acting as energy traps and non-radiative dissipation centers; (ii) the Arrhenius analysis, supported by the results of the FTIR measurements, suggests that the photo-reaction can be associated with breaking of hydrogen bonds. Possible involvement of photo-isomerization of neoxanthin, reported previously (Biochim. Biophys. An enhancement of the Zeeman splitting as a result of the incorporation of paramagnetic Mn ions in ZnMnTe/ZnMgTe core/shell nanowires is reported. The studied structures are grown by gold-catalyst assisted molecular beam epitaxy. The near band edge emission of these structures, conspicuously absent in the case of uncoated ZnMnTe nanowires, is activated by the presence of ZnMgTe coating. Giant Zeeman splitting of this emission is studied in ensembles of nanowires with various average Mn concentrations of the order of a few percent, as well as in individual nanowires. Thus, we show convincingly that a strong spin sp-d coupling is indeed present in these structures.

The supramolecular reorganization of LHCII complexes within the thylakoid membrane in Secale cereale leaves under low and high light condition was examined. Rye seedlings were germinated hydroponically in a climate chamber with a 16 h daylight photoperiod, photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) of 150 μmo lm(-2)s(-1) and 24/16°C day/night temperature. The influence of pre-illumination of the plants with high light intensity on the PSII antenna complexes was studied by comparison of the structure and function of the LHCII complexes and organization of thylakoid membranes isolated from 10-day-old plants illuminated with low (150 μmo lm(-2)s(-1)) or high (1200 μmo lm(-2)s(-1)) light intensity. Aggregated and trimeric with monomeric forms of LHCII complexes were separated from the whole thylakoid membranes using non-denaturing electrophoresis. Analyses of fluorescence emission spectra of these different LHCII forms showed that the monomer was the most effective aggregating antenna form. Moreover, photoprotection connected with LHCII aggregation was more effective upon LHCII monomers in comparison to trimer aggregation. Light stress induced specific organization of neighboring LHCII complexes, causing an increase in fluorescence yield of the long-wavelength bands (centered at 701 and 734 nm). The influence of excess Cu ions and high light treatment on the function of photosystem II was investigated in order to examine how this heavy metal modifies the photoprotective mechanisms operating at the molecular level in Secale cereale plants. Thus, non-treated plants and those treated with 5 or 50 microM Cu, simultaneously illuminated with 150 micromol m(-2) s(-1) or 1200 micromol m(-2) s(-1) light intensity, were studied. To analyze the PSII reaction to the stress conditions, Chl a fluorescence induction was applied. An increase in the value of Phi(PSII) and R(fd) parameters indicated that the photosynthetic apparatus adapted to the high light condition by effective utilization of excitation energy in the light and dark phases of photosynthesis. This phenomenon was accompanied by dissipation of excitation energy within the antenna complexes. The xanthophyll cycle pigments in Secale cereale leaves were separated and quantified by the HPLC technique. The results showed that, under high light irradiance, both 5 and 50 microM Cu induced the process of violaxanthin de-epoxidation and zeaxanthin accumulation. The significant zeaxanthin accumulation was found to be involved in photoprotective energy dissipation as heat, which was supported by correlation between the rate of violaxanthin de-epoxidation and the value of SV parameters. Interestingly, Cu treatment caused violaxanthin isomerization from its trans to 15-, 13- and 9-cis forms in proportional correlation to the metal concentration. This phenomenon was confirmed by a study of Cu-induced violaxanthin isomerization in vitro, which suggests a direct metal-pigment molecule interaction. We also observed that the violaxanthin trans-cis isomerization increased simultaneously with anteraxanthin content. On the basis of these findings, it can be speculated that violaxanthin isomerization is the basic process responsible for the xanthophyll cycle operation., (Copyright 2010 Elsevier B.V. Background: Hyperglycemia on admission increases the risk of death in patients with acute stroke. It remains unclear whether glucose normalisation after admission is associated with improved survival. The goal of the study was to determine the relationship between postadmission glucose levels and mortality in stroke patients with and without admission hyperglycemia., Methods: 302 patients with first-ever ischemic stroke and without prior diagnosis of diabetes mellitus were enrolled. Random plasma glucose level was measured on admission and fasting glucose on day 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7. Hyperglycemia on admission was defined as glucose level > or = 7.8 mmol/L. Postadmission hyperglycemia was diagnosed if mean postadmission fasting glucose level was > or = 6.1 mmol/L., Results: After multivariable adjustment, postadmission hyperglycemia was associated with higher risk of death regardless of admission glucose levels (HR: 1.80, 95%CI: 1.39-2.86, P<0.01). Postadmission hyperglycemia increases risk of death in both patients with admission hyperglycemia (HR: 4.83, 95%CI: 1.93-12.06, P<0.01) and those with admission normoglycemia (HR: 1.64, 95%CI: 1.06-2.54, P=0.03). In patients with admission hyperglycemia glucose normalisation after admission was associated with reduced risk of death compared to those with persistent hyperglycemia (HR: 0.21, 95%CI: 0.08-0.52). The patients who were normoglycemic on day 1 and developed hyperglycemia on next days had increased risk of death compared to persistent normoglycemic patients (HR: 1.55, 95%CI: 1.01-2.39, P=0.04)., Conclusions: Postadmission, but not admission, hyperglycemia is associated with increased risk of death. The effects of 50 microM cadmium (Cd) or copper (Cu) ions on the supramolecular conformation of the light-harvesting pigment-protein complex of PSII (LHCII) isolated from rye seedlings were studied. It was found that the action of these two metal ions on the LHCII structure and organization is dissimilar. The Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) measurements indicated inhibition or stimulation of formation of parallel beta-structures and aggregates in the presence of Cd or Cu ions, respectively. The Chl a fluorescence excitation spectra of LHCII extracted from Cd-treated plants showed that the decreased aggregation of complexes was correlated with a decline in efficiency of quenching of excitation energy. From the results of mass spectrometry, changes in LHCII aggregation in the presence of Cd ions might be based on decreases in the molecular mass of Lhcb1 and Lhcb2 proteins. An increase in the content of LHCII aggregates under Cu ion excess was associated with changes in the LHCII xanthophyll pigment pool. In the complexes isolated from Cu-treated plants, all-trans violaxanthin and 9'-cis neoxanthin content declined and the simultaneous appearance of the fraction of 9-cis violaxanthin was observed. 9-cis violaxanthin formation under Cu ion excess might facilitate LHCII inter-trimer interaction and, therefore, aggregation of complexes. RLS (resonance light scattering) spectra indicated that the excitonic interaction between Chl molecules and between Chls and xanthophylls was responsible for the effective dissipation of excitation energy in LHCII isolated from Cu-treated plants. Also, changes in singlet excitation energy transfer between carotenoids and Chls under the action of heavy metals were observed.

CdTe/ZnTe axial nanowires were successfully fabricated by molecular beam epitaxy with the use of Au nano-catalysts and vapour-liquid-solid growth mechanism. Nanowires had zinc-blende structure with numerous stacking faults in the bottom ZnTe part and near perfect crystalline structure in the top CdTe part. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS) and lattice fringe spacing analysis revealed nonabrupt nature of hetero-interface, whose width was estimated to be 50-70 nm for the nanowires having a diameter in the range from 40 to 50 nm.

ZnTe-ZnO core-shell radial heterostructures were grown using a new method of combining molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and atomic layer deposition (ALD). Zinc telluride nanowires (core) were grown on a GaAs substrate using gold catalyzed vapor-liquid-solid mechanism. An atomic layer deposition technique using diethyl zinc and deionized water as precursors was applied for zinc oxide shell formation. The core-shell ZnTe-ZnO heterostructures thus obtained were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction and photoluminescence measurements.

Introduction: There are 4 million people suffering from migraine in Poland, which account; for 10% of national population. Pathomechanism of migraine is not fully understood. In the recent years multiple studies in migraine patients revealed occurrence of metabolic disorders in nervous system tissue., Material and Methods: In 30 subjects with migraine diagnosis magnetic resonance spectroscopy examination was performed. Relative concentration ratio (WSS) of metabolites level to creatinine (Cr) level was measured. The obtained values were compared to findings in control groups., Results: Linear correlation between increase in both WSS Lac/Cr value in left temporal lobe and WSS ml/Cr value in right frontal lobe and a number of migraine attacks per year in migraine patients was observed. It also turned out that WSS ml/Cr vox3 value depends on a total number of migraine attacks in life. A lactic acid level in left temporal lobe normalizes along with the elongation of interattack interval. There is a statistically significant difference of WSS ml/Cr value measured in left temporal lobe and right frontal lobe between migraine patients and control group. There is a statistically significant difference of WSS Cho/Cr value measured in left temporal lobe and right frontal lobe between migraine subjects and control groups.

Plants have developed several adaptive regulatory mechanisms, operating at all the organization levels, to optimize utilization of light energy and to protect themselves against over-excitation-related damage. We report activity of a previously unknown possible regulatory mechanism that operates at the molecular level of the major photosynthetic pigment-protein complexes of plants, LHCII. This mechanism is driven exclusively by blue light, operates in the trimeric but not in the monomeric complex, and results in singlet excitation quenching leading to thermal energy dissipation. The conclusions are based on single molecule fluorescence lifetime analysis, direct measurements of thermal energy dissipation by photo-thermal spectroscopy, and on fluorescence spectroscopy. Possible molecular mechanisms involved in the blue-light-induced photoprotective effect are discussed, including xanthophyll photo-isomerization and the thermo-optic effect.

The light-harvesting pigment-protein complex LHCII is a main antenna complex of the photosynthetic apparatus of plants, responsible for collecting light energy and also for photoprotection against overexcitation-induced damage. Realization of both functions depends on molecular organization of the complex. Monolayer technique has been applied to address the problem of supramolecular organization of LHCII. Analysis of the isotherms of compression of monomolecular films formed at the argon-water interface shows that LHCII appears in two phases: one characterized by the specific molecular area characteristic of trimeric and one of monomeric organization of LHCII. Monolayers of LHCII were deposited by means of the Langmuir-Blodgett technique to solid supports and examined by means of AFM, FTIR, fluorescence spectroscopy, and fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM). FTIR analysis shows that organization of the trimers of LHCII within a monolayer is associated with formation of intermolecular hydrogen bonds between neighboring polypeptides. The linear-dichroism FTIR analysis reveals that polypeptide fragments involved in intermolecular interactions are oriented at an angle of 67 degrees with respect to the normal axis to the plane of the layer. Fluorescence and fluorescence lifetime analysis reveal that the organization of LHCII within monolayers is associated with formation of the low-lying excitonic energy levels that can be potentially responsible for excess excitation quenching. FLIM and AFM reveal heterogeneous organization of LHCII monolayers, in particular, formation of ring-like structures. The potential of LHCII to form molecular structures characterized by pigment excitonic interactions is discussed in terms of regulation of the photosynthetic accessory function and photoprotection against overexcitation-induced damage.

It is shown that the growth of II-VI diluted magnetic semiconductor nanowires is possible by the catalytically enhanced molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Zn(1-x)MnxTe NWs with manganese content up to x=0.60 were produced by this method. X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and temperature dependent photoluminescence measurements confirm the incorporation of Mn(2+) ions in the cation substitutional sites of the ZnTe matrix of the NWs.

This paper reports on the epitaxial growth of single-crystalline ternary Zn(1-x)Mg(x)Te nanowires covering a broad compositional range of molar fraction 0≤x≤0.75. The nanowires were grown on (100), (110), and (111) GaAs substrates using a vapor-liquid-solid mechanism. Solid source molecular beam epitaxy and an Au-based nanocatalyst were used for these purposes. The composition of nanowires can be adjusted by changing the ratio of Mg to Zn molecular beam fluxes. Electron microscopy images show that the nanowires are smooth and slightly tapered. The diameters of the obtained nanowires are from 30 to 70 nm and their length is around 1 µm. X-ray diffraction analysis and transmission electron microscopy reveal that the nanowires have a zinc-blende structure throughout the whole range of obtained compositions, and have a [Formula: see text] growth axis. The Raman measurements reveal both the expected splitting and shift of phonon lines with increasing Mg content, thus proving the substitutional incorporation of Mg into metallic sites of the ZnTe lattice.

Leaves of Secale cereale seedlings were exposed to high light illumination (1200micromolm(-2)s(-1)) and Cd ions at 5 or 50microM concentrations. Influence of these stress factors on violaxanthin cycle pigments content was analysed chromatographically. Chlorophyll a fluorescence induction was used to analyse response of PSII to stress conditions and contribution of light-harvesting complex (LHCII) in non-photochemical quenching of excitation energy. The Cd-induced all-trans violaxanthin isomerization was analysed by HPLC technique in acetonitrile:methanol:water (72:8:3, v/v) solvent mixture. Interestingly, in the control and Cd-treated leaves subjected to high light, photochemical utilization of absorbed energy increased. This indicates plant adaptation to high light stress. In control plants high light caused zeaxanthin formation, however, the presence of Cd in the nutrient solution resulted in reduction of the second step of violaxanthin de-epoxidation process and anteraxanthin accumulation. In this study we have also shown, that non-photochemical quenching can be independent of anteraxanthin and zeaxanthin content. The particular increase in the cis isomers fraction in Cd-treated leaves has been explained in terms of a direct metal-pigment interaction as confirmed by Cd-induced all-trans violaxanthin isomerization in organic solvent, leading to formation of 13-cis, 9-cis and 15-cis isomers.

GaAs:Mn nanowires were obtained on GaAs(001) and GaAs(111)B substrates by molecular beam epitaxial growth of (Ga,Mn)As at conditions leading to MnAs phase separation. Their density is proportional to the density of catalyzing MnAs nanoislands, which can be controlled by the Mn flux and/or the substrate temperature. After deposition corresponding to a 200 nm thick (Ga,Mn)As layer the nanowires are around 700 nm long. Their shapes are tapered, with typical diameters around 30 nm at the base and 7 nm at the tip. The wires grow along the 111 direction, i.e., along the surface normal on GaAs(111)B and inclined on GaAs(001). In the latter case they tend to form branches. Being rooted in the ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As, the nanowires combine one-dimensional properties with the magnetic properties of (Ga,Mn)As and provide natural, self-assembled structures for nanospintronics.

Field effect transistors with ferroelectric gates would make ideal rewritable nonvolatile memories were it not for the severe problems in integrating the ferroelectric oxide directly on the semiconductor channel. We propose a powerful way to avoid these problems using a gate material that is ferroelectric and semiconducting simultaneously. First, ferroelectricity in semiconductor (Cd,Zn)Te films is proven and studied using modified piezoforce scanning probe microscopy. Then, a rewritable field effect device is demonstrated by local poling of the (Cd,Zn)Te layer of a (Cd,Zn)Te/CdTe quantum well, provoking a reversible, nonvolatile change in the resistance of the 2D electron gas. The results point to a potential new family of nanoscale one-transistor memories.

The problem of drug interactions is very important in pharmacotherapy. The interactions of some drugs (antihistamines, macrolides, fluoroquinolones, cisapride) with other can induce ventricular arrhythmias. A lot of non-antiarrhytmic drugs can prolong the QT interval, induce torsade de pointes and cardiotoxicity.

The aim of the study was to investigate glucose derangement and its short- and long-term prognostic significance in nondiabetic ischemic stroke patients. The study involved 262 consecutive patients, mean age: 70.1+/-12.4 years, with a supratentorial ischemic stroke. The following data were collected: patients characteristics, risk factors, comorbidities, and stroke severity assessed by the Scandinavian Stroke Scale (SSS). Serum glucose levels were measured on admission, on the next, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th and 14th day after stroke onset. The outcome measures on day 30 were mortality and capacity to perform daily activities: the Barthel Index and Rankin Scale. The 1-year survival was estimated by the Kaplan-Meier method. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to assess predictors of 1-year mortality in nondiabetics. Diabetes mellitus was found in 24.8% of patients and transient hyperglycemia in 36.3% of patients. Patients with transient hyperglycemia scored lower on SSS in the subsequent days of assessment than patients with either diabetes mellitus or normoglycemia. They had larger ischemic lesions on computer tomography (CT) than diabetics and had higher 30-day mortality than normoglycemics (p<0.05). One-year mortality was similar in transient hyperglycemics and diabetics, and both were significantly higher than in normoglycemics (p<0.05). A proportional hazards model analysis showed that transient hyperglycemia is not an independent predictor of death within a year after stroke.

We present two cases of women admitted to our department with suspicion of meningitis. They were transferred from Neurology Unit. CSF changes found in both cases were not of infectious origin. Authors pay attention to diagnostic difficulties in such cases.

Introduction: Gap junction proteins are thought to form the low resistance pathways that connect neighboring cells within the sinoatrial node, and to mediate pacemaker synchronization., Methods and Results: We have carried out microelectrode mapping experiments of the hamster sinoatrial region to localize the primary pacemaker area for subsequent light, electron, and immunofluorescence microscopic studies aimed at testing the hypothesis that the major cardiac gap junction protein (connexin43) is present in such an area. The site of earliest activation is unifocal and the pattern of activation, obtained by multiple sequential microelectrode recordings of the sinoatrial region, is qualitatively similar to that previously described for other species. However, quantitatively, the impulse transmission time from the primary pacemaker area to the crista (sulcus) terminalis in the hamster sinoatrial node is about 50% briefer than that of the guinea pig and five times faster than that of the rabbit. Immunolocalization studies in the hamster sinoatrial node using anti-connexin43 antisera demonstrated specific staining at the areas of cell-to-cell apposition and suggested that the apparently high degree of electrical coupling in this tissue is the result of abundant connexin43 expression. The immunofluorescence data were supported by light microscopic studies, which demonstrated the typical morphologic characteristics of sinus nodal cells in the pacemaker area. In addition, an electron microscopic study of the sinoatrial region revealed the presence of gap junctions in the junctional complex at areas of cell-to-cell contact., Conclusion: Our results demonstrate that cells in the sinoatrial region of the hamster heart are electrically well coupled and strongly suggest that such coupling is mediated by gap junctional channels formed by connexin43.

The subcellular mechanism of cell-to-cell communication in the natural pacemaker region of the mammalian heart was studied using electrophysiological and immunofluorescence techniques in isolated pairs of rabbit sinus nodal cells. By measuring whole-cell currents using a double patch-clamp approach, it was demonstrated that communication in the sinus node is mediated through gap junctional channels similar to those in other types of adult cardiac cell pairs. Macroscopic sinus nodal junctional resistance had a mean value of 387.9 +/- 97.1 M omega (mean +/- SEM, n = 10) and was greatly increased by superfusion with alkanols. Single-channel junctional conductance could be resolved in three cell pairs. Given their high membrane resistance (1.16 +/- 0.32 G omega, n = 12), the electrical coupling provided by as few as three gap junctional channels between nodal cells will allow for pacemaker synchronization. Further evidence for the presence of the channels was obtained from immunofluorescent double-labeling of desmin and the gap junction protein (connexin43) in sinus nodal tissue as well as in cultured sinus nodal cells. Using antisera against residues 243-257 of the connexin43 protein, a specific staining at the site of cell-to-cell apposition was demonstrated. These data provide direct evidence in favor of electronic coupling as the means for achieving pacemaker synchronization in the rabbit sinus node.

The carboxyl terminal cytoplasmic domain of distinct gap junction proteins may play an important role in assembly of functional channels as well as differential responsiveness to pH, voltage, and intracellular second messengers. Oligonucleotide-directed site-specific mutagenesis in a paired Xenopus laevis oocyte expression system was used to examine the expression of mRNAs encoding wild-type and carboxyl terminal mutant connexin43 (Cx43) proteins. Oocytes were stripped, injected with mRNA or distilled water (dH2O), preincubated for 16-20 hours, and then paired for 5-10 hours; this process was followed by electrophysiological recording using the dual voltage-clamp technique. Initial experiments compared the relative junctional conductances (Gjs) in oocyte pairs expressing Cx43 (382 amino acid residues) and two truncated mutants lacking most or a portion of the cytoplasmic carboxyl terminal. The shortest mutant (M241) contained 240 amino acid residues and was devoid of all phosphorylatable serine residues in the cytoplasmic tail; its length approximated the length of liver connexin26. The longest mutant (M257) tested contained 256 amino acid residues, including two serine residues. Oocyte pairs expressing M241 yielded a Gj similar to that of oocytes injected with dH2O, whereas M257 yielded a Gj similar to that of oocytes injected with Cx43. Immunoprecipitation studies showed that Cx43, M257, and M241 proteins were readily detectable in oocytes injected with their respective mRNAs, indicating that the lack of Gj observed with the M241 mRNA was not due to reduced translation. Immunocytochemical studies revealed that wild-type and both truncated mutants were localized to the area of cell-to-cell contact between the paired oocytes, indicating that protein targeting to the membrane was not inhibited in oocytes injected with M241 mRNA. Oocyte pairs expressing mutants in which serine residues were replaced with nonphosphorylatable amino acids (serine codon No. 255 AGC was converted to GCC, alanine, designated as M255S----A, and serine codon No. 244 AGC was converted to GGC, glycine, designated as M244S----G) showed Gjs similar to M257, indicating that these serine residues and, by inference, their phosphorylation state are not critical for expression of functional channels. The importance of the length of the carboxyl terminus was assessed by comparing the Gjs in a series of mutants that were intermediate in length between M257 and M241. Gradual shortening of the carboxyl terminus produced a gradual reduction of Gj relative to M257. However, simple deletion of amino acid residues 241-257 from the wild-type Cx43 did not affect Gj relative to M257.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

An original experimental model has been presented for studying of cytoprotection of non-stimulated leukocytes. The model consists in determining of a degree of inhibition of the release of lactic acid dehydrogenase (LDH) by isolated human neutrophils (PMNs) in the course of their "ageing" at the room temperature (22 degrees C). Using this model for the first time, cytoprotective action was pointed-out of following compounds: NO (EDRF) in aqueous solution; natrium nitroprusside; active metabolite of molsidomine--SIN-1; N-acetyl-S-nitroso-penicillamine (SNAP) which are believed to owe their anti-platelet and vasodilatory activity to stimulation of cyclic-GMP--and iloprost (a stable prostacyclin analogue) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) which activate cyclic AMP. Effectiveness of cytoprotective action of these compounds increased as follows: NO (IC50 = 58.4) less than PGE2 (IC50 = 38) less than SIN-1 (IC50 = 9.2) less than SNAP (IC50 = 3.2) less than natrium nitroprusside (IC50 = 1.2) less than iloprost (IC50 = 0.2)(nmoles/5 x 10(6) PMNs; moreover, iloprost and SIN-1 showed a synergic action. Among ++nitroso-vasodilators, nitroglycerin had no cytoprotective action; it may indicate that to achieve cytoprotection in leukocytes a nitro- vasodilator should contain in its chemical structure -NO group and not -NO3 group, as it is in nitroglycerin. In neutrophils stimulated with calcium ionophore, arachidonic acid or FMLP, nitro-vasodilators are of no influence on production of superoxide anions O2-, hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acids (5-HETE and 12-HETE) and leukotriene B4. A hypothesis has been put forward on the relationship of function of c-GMP and c-AMP in the mechanism of cytoprotection of human leukocytes.

Endothelium-derived relaxing factor (EDRF) and donors of nitric oxide (NO) (glyceryl trinitrate, SIN-1--a metabolite of molsidomine--S-nitroso-N-acetyl-penicillamine, and sodium nitroprusside) but not prostacyclin and its analog, iloprost, relax strips of rabbit aorta. Strips of human coronary artery also relax when exposed to NO donors and prostacyclin; in this artery, SIN-1 and iloprost exert additive but not synergistic relaxant action. In mildly activated human platelets and leukocytes, SIN-1 and iloprost have a synergistic suppressive action. A similar synergistic thrombolytic effect between NO and prostacyclin was observed in whole rabbit blood in interactions with rabbit aortic endothelium. These findings suggest that because of this cell-selective synergism between NO donors and prostacyclin analogs, the concomitant use of molsidomine and iloprost for the treatment of ischemic heart and peripheral vascular disease should be attempted.
