Genetic screening of newborns for deafness plays an important role in elucidating the etiology of deafness, diagnosing it early, and intervening in it. Genetic screening of newborns has been conducted for 11 years in Beijing. It started with a chip to screen for 9 variants of 4 genes in 2012; the chip screened for 15 variants of those genes in 2018, and it now screens for 23 variants of those genes. In the current study, a comparative analysis of three screening protocols and follow-up for infants with pathogenic variants was performed. The rates of detection and hearing test results of infants with pathogenic variants were analyzed. Subjects were 493,821 infants born at 122 maternal and child care centers in Beijing from April 2012 to August 2023. Positivity increased from 4.599% for the chip to screen for 9 variants to 4.971% for the chip to screen for 15 variants, and further to 11.489% for the chip to screen for 23 variants. The carrier frequency of the GJB2 gene increased from 2.489% for the chip to screen for 9 variants and 2.422% for the chip to screen for 15 variants to 9.055% for the chip to screen for 23 variants. The carrier frequency of the SLC26A4 gene increased from 1.621% for the chip to screen for 9 variants to 2.015% for the chip to screen for 15 variants and then to 2.151% for the chip to screen for 23 variants. According to the chip to screen for 9 variants and the chip to screen for 15 variants, the most frequent mutant allele was c.235delC. According to the chip to screen for 23 variants, the most frequent mutant allele was c.109G>A. The chip to screen for 15 variants was used to screen 66.67% (14/21) of newborns with biallelic variants in the SLC26A4 gene for newly added mutations. The chip to screen for 23 variants was used to screen 92.98% (53/57) of newborns with biallelic variants in the GJB2 gene (52 cases were biallelic c.109G>A) and 25% (1/4) of newborns with biallelic variants in the SLC26A4 gene for newly added mutations. Among the infants with pathogenic variants (biallelic variants in GJB2 or SLC26A4), 20.66% (25/121) currently have normal hearing. In addition, 34.62% (9/26) of newborns who passed the hearing screening were diagnosed with hearing loss. Findings indicate that a growing number of newborns have benefited, and especially in the early identification of potential late-onset hearing loss, as the number of screening sites has increased. Conducting long-term audiological monitoring for biallelic variants in individuals with normal hearing is of paramount significance.

In assisted reproduction techniques, oocytes encounter elevated levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) during in vitro maturation (IVM). Oxidative stress adversely affects oocyte quality, hampering their maturation, growth, and subsequent development. Thus, mitigating excessive ROS to safeguard less viable oocytes during IVM stands as a viable strategy. Numerous antioxidants have been explored for oocyte IVM, yielding considerable effects; however, several aspects, including solubility, stability, and safety, demand attention and resolution. In this study, we developed nanoparticles by self-assembling endogenous bilirubin and melatonin hormone coated with bilirubin-conjugated glycol chitosan (MB@GBn) to alleviate oxidative stress and enhance oocyte maturation. The optimized MB@GBn exhibited a uniform spherical shape, measuring 128 nm in particle size, with a PDI value of 0.1807 and a surface potential of +11.35 mV. The positively charged potential facilitated nanoparticle adherence to the oocyte surface through electrostatic interaction, allowing for functional action. In vitro studies demonstrated that MB@GB significantly enhanced the maturation of compromised oocytes. Further investigation revealed MB@GB's effectiveness in scavenging ROS, reducing intracellular calcium levels, and suppressing mitochondrial polarization. Hearing loss is the third most prevalent physical condition affecting communication, well-being, and healthcare costs. Sensorineural hearing loss often occurs first in the high-frequency region (basal turn), then towards the low-frequency region (apical turn). However, the mechanism is still unclear. Supporting cells play a critical role in the maintenance of normal cochlear function. The function and supporting capacity of these cells may be different from different frequency regions. Hensen's cells are one of the unique supporting cell types characterized by lipid droplets (LDs) in the cytoplasm. Here, we investigated the morphological and gene expression differences of Hensen's cells along the cochlear axis. We observed a gradient change in the morphological characteristics of Hensen's cells along the cochlear tonotopic axis, with larger and more abundant LDs observed in apical Hensen's cells. Smart-seq2 RNA-seq revealed differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between apical and basal Hensen's cells that clustered in several pathways, including unsaturated fatty acid biosynthesis, cholesterol metabolism, and fatty acid catabolism, which are associated with different energy storage capacities and metabolic potential. These findings suggest potential differences in lipid metabolism and oxidative energy supply between apical and basal Hensen's cells, which is consistent with the morphological differences of Hensen's cells. We also found differential expression patterns of candidate genes associated with hereditary hearing loss (HHL), noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), and age-related hearing loss (ARHL). These findings indicate functional heterogeneity of SCs along the cochlear axis, contribute to our understanding of cochlear physiology and provide molecular basis evidence for future studies of hearing loss.

Gene therapy for monogenic auditory neuropathy (AN) has successfully improved hearing function in target gene-deficient mice. Accurate genetic diagnosis can not only clarify the etiology but also accurately locate the lesion site, providing a basis for gene therapy and guiding patient intervention and management strategies. In this study, we collected data from a family with a pair of sisters with prelingual deafness. According to their auditory tests, subject Ⅱ-1 was diagnosed with profound sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), Ⅱ-2 was diagnosed with AN, Ⅰ-1 was diagnosed with high-frequency SNHL, and Ⅰ-2 had normal hearing. Using whole-exome sequencing (WES), one nonsense mutation, c.4030C>T (p.R1344X), and one missense mutation, c.5000C>A (p.A1667D), in the OTOF (NM_001287489.1) gene were identified in the two siblings. Their parents were heterozygous carriers of c.5000C>A (father) and c.4030C>T (mother). We hypothesized that c.5000C>A is a novel pathogenic mutation. Thus, subject Ⅱ-1 should also be diagnosed with AN caused by OTOF mutations. Molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 )-based materials for piezocatalysis are unsatisfactory due to their low actual piezoelectric coefficient and poor electrical conductivity. Herein, 1T/3R phase MoS 2 grown in situ on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) was proposed. MoS 2 @MWCNTs exhibited the interwoven morphology of thin nanoflowers and tubes, and the piezoelectric response of MoS 2 @MWCNTs was 4.07 times higher than that of MoS 2 via piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) characterization. MoS 2 @MWCNTs exhibited superior activity with a 91% degradation rate of norfloxacin (NOR) after actually working 24 min (as for rhodamine B, reached 100% within 18 min) by pulse-mode ultrasonic vibration-triggered piezocatalysis. It was found that piezocatalysis for removing pollutants was attributed to the synergistic effect of free radicals ( • OH and O 2 •- ) and nonfree radical ( 1 O 2 , key role) pathways, together with the innergenerated-H 2 O 2 promoting the degradation rate. 1 O 2 can be generated by electron transfer and energy transfer pathways. The presence of oxygen vacancies (OVs) induced the transformation of O 2 to 1 O 2 by triplet energy transfer. The fast charge transfer in MoS 2 @MWCNTs heterostructure and the coexistence of sulfur vacancies and OVs enhanced charge carrier separation resulting in a prominent piezoelectric effect. This work opens up new avenues for the development of efficient piezocatalysts that can be utilized for environmental purification.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic degenerative joint disease that affects worldwide. Oxidative stress plays a critical role in the chronic inflammation and OA progression. Scavenging overproduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) could be rational strategy for OA treatment. Bilirubin (BR) is a potent endogenous antioxidant that can scavenge various ROS and also exhibit anti-inflammatory effects. However, whether BR could exert protection on chondrocytes for OA treatment has not yet been elucidated. Here, chondrocytes were exposed to hydrogen peroxide with or without BR treatment. The cell viability was assessed, and the intracellular ROS, inflammation cytokines were monitored to indicate the state of chondrocytes. In addition, BR was also tested on LPS-treated Raw264.7 cells to test the anti-inflammation property. An in vitro bimimic OA microenvironment was constructed by LPS-treated Raw264.7 and chondrocytes, and BR also exert certain protection for chondrocytes by activating Nrf2/HO-1 pathway and suppressing NF-κB signalling. An ACLT-induced OA model was constructed to test the in vivo therapeutic efficacy of BR. Compared to the clinical used HA, BR significantly reduced cartilage degeneration and delayed OA progression. Objective: To analyze the mutation spectrum of 23-site chip newborn deafness genetic screening in Beijing, and to provide basis for genetic counseling and clinical diagnosis and treatment. Methods: The study included 21 006 babies born in Beijing from December 2022 to June 2023. All subjects underwent newborn deafness genetic screening in Beijing Tongren Hospital, covering 23 variants in 4 genes, the GJB2 gene（c.35delG, c.176_191del16, c.235delC, c.299_300delAT, c.109G>A, c.257C>G, c.512insAACG, c.427C>T, c.35insG）, SLC26A4 gene（c.919-2A>G, c.2168A>G, c.1174A>T, c.1226G>A, c.1229C>T, c.1975G>C, c.2027T>A, c.589G>A, c.1707+5G>A, c.917insG, c.281C>T）, Mt12SrRNA （m.1555A>G, m.1494C>T） and GJB3 gene（c.538C>T）. The mutation detection rate and allele frequency were analyzed. Results: The overall mutation detection rate was 11.516%（2 419/21 006）, with the GJB2 gene being the most frequently involved at 9.097%（1 911/21 006）, followed by the SLC26A4 gene at 2.123%（446/21 006）, the GJB3 gene at 0.362%（76/21 006） and Mt12SrRNA at 0.176%（37/21 006）. Among the GJB2 genes, c.109G>A and c.235delC mutation detection rates were the highest, with 6.579%（1 382/21 006） and 1.795%（377/21 006）, respectively. Of the SLC26A4 genes, c.919-2A>G and c.2168A>G had the highest mutation rates of 1.423%（299/21 006） and 0.233%（49/21 106）, respectively. Regarding the allele frequency, GJB2 c.109G>A was the most common variant with an allele frequency of 3.359%（1 411/42 012）, followed by the GJB2 c.235delC at 0.897%（377/42 012） and the SLC26A4 c.919-2A>G at 0.719%（302/42 012）. Conclusion: 23-site chip newborn deafness genetic screening in Beijing showed that GJB2 c.109G>A mutation detection rate and allele frequency were the highest. Objectives: This study aimed to explore the effects of different duration and daily frequency of vestibular rehabilitation (VR) in patients with residual symptoms after benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) successful repositioning., Method: Patients with successful BPPV repositioning (n = 118) were divided into 3 groups according to VR duration and frequency: group A (n = 30; 15 minutes, 3 times/day), group B (n = 30; 30 minutes, 3 times/day), group C (n = 28; 15 minutes, 6 times/day), and control group D (n = 30; no VR). All patients completed the dizziness handicap inventory (DHI) and vestibular rehabilitation benefit questionnaire (VRBQ) at baseline and after 2 and 4 weeks., Results: The emotional scores and the proportion of severe dizziness disability in the DHI scores were significant differences between VR groups A to C and control group D after 2 and 4 weeks (all P  < .05). There were significant differences in total DHI and VRBQ scores among the VR groups A to C after 2 and 4 weeks (all P  < .05). Interestingly, emotion scores were not significantly different in group A ( P  = .385), group B ( P  = .569), and group C ( P  = .340) between 2 and 4 weeks. Meanwhile at 2 weeks, the difference in motion-provoked dizziness score between group A and B was statistically significant ( P  = .02)., Conclusions: A total VR duration over 4 weeks can reduce dizziness and improve VR benefits in routine therapy in patients with residual dizziness after successful BPPV repositioning. Emotional improvement can be observed after 2 weeks. Bacterial infections pose a significant risk to human health. Magnolol, derived from Magnolia officinalis , exhibits potent antibacterial properties. Synthetic biology offers a promising approach to manufacture such natural compounds. However, the plant-based biosynthesis of magnolol remains obscure, and the lack of identification of critical genes hampers its synthetic production. In this study, we have proposed a one-step conversion of magnolol from chavicol using laccase. After leveraging 20 transcriptomes from diverse parts of M. officinalis , transcripts were assembled, enriching genome annotation. Upon integrating this dataset with current genomic information, we could identify 30 laccase enzymes. From two potential gene clusters associated with magnolol production, highly expressed genes were subjected to functional analysis. In vitro experiments confirmed MoLAC14 as a pivotal enzyme in magnolol synthesis. Improvements in the thermal stability of MoLAC14 were achieved through selective mutations, where E345P, G377P, H347F, E346C, and E346F notably enhanced stability. By conducting alanine scanning, the essential residues in MoLAC14 were identified, and the L532A mutation further boosted magnolol production to an unprecedented level of 148.83 mg/L. Our findings not only elucidated the key enzymes for chavicol to magnolol conversion, but also laid the groundwork for synthetic biology-driven magnolol production, thereby providing valuable insights into M. officinalis biology and comparative plant science.

Introduction: Olivetolic acid (OLA) is a key intermediate in cannabidiol (CBD) synthesis, and cannabinoids are important neuroactive drugs. However, the catalytic activity of olivetolic acid synthase (OLS), the key enzyme involved in OLA biosynthesis, remains low and its catalytic mechanism is unclear. Materials and Methods: In this study, we conducted a scrupulous screening of the pivotal rate-limiting enzyme and analyzed its amino acid sites that are critical to enzyme activity as validated by experiments. Results: Through stringent enzyme screening, we pinpointed a highly active OLS sequence, OLS4. Then, we narrowed down three critical amino acid sites (I258, D198, E196) that significantly influence the OLS activity. Conclusions: Our findings laid the groundwork for the efficient biosynthesis of OLA, and thereby facilitate the biosynthesis of CBD.

Universal newborn hearing screening (UNHS) and audiological diagnosis are crucial for children with congenital hearing loss (HL). The objective of this study was to analyze hearing screening techniques, audiological outcomes and risk factors among children referred from a UNHS program in Beijing. A retrospective analysis was performed in children who were referred to our hospital after failing UNHS during a 9-year period. A series of audiological diagnostic tests were administered to each case, to confirm and determine the type and degree of HL. Risk factors for HL were collected. Of 1839 cases, 53.0% were referred after only transient evoked otoacoustic emission (TEOAE) testing, 46.1% were screened by a combination of TEOAE and automatic auditory brainstem response (AABR) testing, and 1.0% were referred after only AABR testing. HL was confirmed in 55.7% of cases. Ears with screening results that led to referral experienced a more severe degree of HL than those with results that passed. Risk factors for HL were identified in 113 (6.1%) cases. The main risk factors included craniofacial anomalies (2.7%), length of stay in the neonatal intensive care unit longer than 5 days (2.4%) and birth weight less than 1500 g (0.8%). The statistical data showed that age (P < 0.001) and risk factors, including craniofacial anomalies (P < 0.001) and low birth weight (P = 0.048), were associated with the presence of HL. Age-related variations in many regions and/or networks of the human brain have been uncovered using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging. However, these findings did not account for the dynamical effect the brain's global activity (global signal [GS]) causes on local characteristics, which is measured by GS topography. To address this gap, we tested GS topography including its correlation with age using a large-scale cross-sectional adult lifespan dataset (n = 492). Both GS topography and its variation with age showed frequency-specific patterns, reflecting the spatiotemporal characteristics of the dynamic change of GS topography with age. A general trend toward dedifferentiation of GS topography with age was observed in both spatial (i.e., less differences of GS between different regions) and temporal (i.e., less differences of GS between different frequencies) dimensions. Further, methodological control analyses suggested that although most age-related dedifferentiation effects remained across different preprocessing strategies, some were triggered by neuro-vascular coupling and physiological noises. Together, these results provide the first evidence for age-related effects on global brain activity and its topographic-dynamic representation in terms of spatiotemporal dedifferentiation., (© 2023 The Authors. Colon cancer in patients with situs inversus totalis is rarely associated with dextrocardia, and chemotherapy is commonly used for treatment. Central venous access devices are used to administer intravenous fluids and chemotherapy in patients with colon cancer. Compared with peripherally inserted central catheters and Hickman-type tunneled catheters, totally implantable vascular access devices (TIVADs) are safer and more effective. However, positioning the catheter tip may be challenging in patients with dextrocardia and situs inversus. We herein describe a novel case involving a patient with dextrocardia and colon cancer who was treated by TIVAD insertion with intracavitary electrocardiography-aided tip localization.

Acute liver failure (ALF) is a severe liver disease caused by many reasons. One of them is the overdosed acetaminophen (APAP), which is metabolized into N-acetyl-p-benzoquinone imine (NAPQI), an excessive toxic metabolite, by CYP2E1, resulting in excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS), exhausted glutathione (GSH), and thereafter hepatocyte necrosis. N-acetylcysteine is the Food and Drug Administration-approved drug for detoxification of APAP, but it has limited clinical application due to the short therapeutic time window and concentration-related adverse effects. In this study, a carrier-free and bilirubin dotted nanoparticle (B/BG@N) is developed, which is formed using bilirubin and 18β-Glycyrrhetinic acid, and bovine serum albumin (BSA) is then adsorbed to mimic the in vivo behavior of the conjugated bilirubin for hitchhiking. The results demonstrate that B/BG@N can effectively reduce the production of NAPQI as well as exhibit antioxidant effects against intracellular oxidative stress via regulating the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2/heme oxygenase-1 signal axis and reducing the production of inflammatory factors. In vivo study shows that B/BG@N can effectively improve the clinical symptom of the mice model. Threat generalisation is an adaptive process that is essential for individual survival. In contrast, over-generalisation is a pathological process that underlies the development of anxiety disorders. Intolerance of uncertainty (IU) is an individual characteristic known to influence threat generalisation by altering the responses to threat in uncertain situations. However, how it affects contextual threat generalisation remains unclear. Here, we used a novel paradigm to investigate whether contextual threat generalisation varied between individuals depending on their IU level (high or low) and the predictability of a situation (predictable or unpredictable). We analysed shock expectancy in 82 participants (age: 18-27 years) during threat acquisition and generalisation. Results showed that compared with the low IU group, the high IU group exhibited increased contextual threat generalisation to threat-related cues in unpredictable situation. Overgeneralisation is one of the aetiologies of anxiety disorders and is closely associated with elevated intolerance of uncertainty (IU) levels. However, the underlying mechanisms are unclear. Considering the inconsistency of previous results and the high sensitivity of IU to uncertainty, the present study investigated the effect of IU on threat generalisation in predictable and unpredictable conditions. We compared self-reported unconditioned stimuli (US) expectancy and event-related potentials (ERPs) during generalisation in high IU (n = 34) and low IU (n = 35) participants. The results indicated that high IU was associated with higher US expectancy for generalisation stimuli (GS) than with low IU. At the electrophysiological level, compared to low IU, high IU showed increased P1 to ambiguous GS as well as decreased early late positive potential (LPP) to GS in unpredictable conditions, and no differential response to GS in late LPP in predictable conditions. These findings suggest that IU enhances threat generalisation and may be related to increased early automatic attention to ambiguous stimulus and inadequate late elaborate processing in a high uncertainty context. Oxaliplatin (OXA) resistance remains the major obstacle to the successful chemotherapy of colorectal cancer (CRC). As a self-protection mechanism, autophagy may contribute to tumor drug resistance, therefore autophagy suppression could be regarded as a possible treatment option in chemotherapy. Cancer cells, especially drug-resistant tumor cells, increase their demand for specific amino acids by expanding exogenous supply and up-regulating de novo synthesis, to meet the needs for excessive proliferation. Therefore, it is possible to inhibit cancer cell proliferation through pharmacologically blocking the entry of amino acid into cancer cells. SLC6A14 (ATB 0,+ ) is an essential amino acid transporter, that is often abnormally up-regulated in most cancer cells. Herein, in this study, we designed oxaliplatin/berbamine-coloaded, ATB 0,+ -targeted nanoparticles ((O + B)@Trp-NPs) to therapeutically target SLC6A14 (ATB 0,+ ) and inhibit cancer proliferation. The (O + B)@Trp-NPs utilize the surface-modified tryptophan to achieve SLC6A14-targeted delivery of Berbamine (BBM), a compound that is found in a number of plants used in traditional Chinese medicine, which could suppress autolysosome formation though impairing autophagosome-lysosome fusion. We verified the feasibility of this strategy to overcome the OXA resistance during colorectal cancer treatment. The (O + B)@Trp-NPs significantly inhibited the proliferation and decreased the drug resistance of resistant colorectal cancer cells. In vivo, (O + B)@Trp-NPs greatly suppressed the tumor growth in tumor-bearing mice, which is consistent with the in vitro data. Concurrent screening has been proven to provide a comprehensive approach for management of congenital deafness and prevention of ototoxicity. The SLC26A4 gene is associated with late-onset hearing loss and is of great clinical concern. For much earlier detection of newborns with deafness-causing mutations in the SLC26A4 gene, the Beijing Municipal Government launched a chip for optimized genetic screening of 15 variants of 4 genes causing deafness based on a chip to screen for 9 variants of 4 genes, and 6 variants of the SLC26A4 gene have now been added. To ascertain the advantage of a screening chip including 15 variants of 4 genes, the trends in concurrent hearing and genetic screening were analyzed in 2019 and 2020. Subjects were 76,460 newborns who underwent concurrent hearing and genetic screening at 24 maternal and child care centers in Beijing from January 2019 to December 2020. Hearing screening was conducted using transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs), distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE), or the automated auditory brainstem response (AABR). Dried blood spots were collected for genetic testing and 15 variants of 4 genes, namely GJB2, SLC26A4, mtDNA 12S rRNA, and GJB3, were screened for using a DNA microarray platform. The initial referral rate for hearing screening decreased from 3.60% (1,502/41,690) in 2019 to 3.23% (1,124/34,770) in 2020, and the total referral rate for hearing screening dropped form 0.57% (236/41,690) in 2019 to 0.54% (187/34,770) in 2020, indicating the reduced false positive rate of newborn hearing screening and policies to prevent hearing loss conducted by the Beijing Municipal Government have had a significant effect. Positivity according to genetic screening was similar in 2019 (4.970%, 2,072/41,690) and 2020 (4.863%,1,691/34,770), and the most frequent mutant alleles were c.235 del C in the GJB2 gene, followed by c.919-2 A > G in the SLC26A4 gene, and c.299 del AT in the GJB2 gene. In this cohort study, 71.43% (5/7) of newborns with 2 variants of the SLC26A4 gene were screened for newly added mutations, and 28.57% (2/7) of newborns with 2 variants of the SLC26A4 gene passed hearing screening, suggesting that a screening chip including 15 variants of 4 genes was superior at early detection of hearing loss, and especially in early identification of newborns with deafness-causing mutations in the SLC26A4 gene. These findings have clinical significance.

Negative attentional bias is a basic character of depression. The attentional bias modification training (ABMT), being a highly promising and easy-to-use depression intervention technique, has attracted much attention to alleviate depressive symptoms in recent years. However, the effectiveness of ABMT programs was mixed across studies, since it remained unclear the underlying mechanisms of ABMT on alleviating depressive symptoms. We systematically analyzed the main ABMT paradigms to clarify possible mechanisms of effective training and reasons of ineffective training. Valid ABMT programs might alleviate depressive symptoms through regulating self-related rumination or two subcomponents of attentional bias: facilitated attention and impaired attentional disengagement. The reasons for the invalidity of ABMT mainly included the suboptimal design of training procedures, mixed effects of participants' personal characteristics, and the unclear relationship between attentional bias and depression. At present, the high re-combination rate of photogenerated carriers and the low redox capability of the photocatalyst are two factors that severely limit the improvement of photocatalytic performance. Herein, a dual Z-scheme photocatalyst bismuthzirconate/graphitic carbon nitride/silver phosphate (Bi 2 Zr 2 O 7 /g-C 3 N 4 /Ag 3 PO 4 (BCA)) was synthesized using a co-precipitation method, and a dual Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalytic system was established to decrease the high re-combination rate of photogenerated carriers and consequently improve the photocatalytic performance. The re-combination of electron-hole pairs (e - and h + ) in the valence band (VB) of g-C 3 N 4 increases the redox potential of e - and h + , leading to significant improvements in the redox capability of the photocatalyst and the efficiency of e - -h + separation. As a photosensitizer, Ag 3 PO 4 can enhance the visible light absorption capacity of the photocatalyst. The prepared photocatalyst showed strong stability, which was attributed to the efficient suppression of photo-corrosion of Ag 3 PO 4 by transferring the e - to the VB of g-C 3 N 4 . Tetracycline was degraded efficiently by BCA-10% (the BCA with 10 wt.% of AgPO 4 ) under visible light, and the degradation efficiency was up to 86.2%. Objective: To investigate the clinical audiological characteristics of children referred from maternal and child institutions and analyze the high risk factors of hearing loss, so as to provide scientific basis for further improvement of children's ear and hearing care. Methods: The subjects of this study were 868 children who were referred by maternal and child institutions in Beijing to the otology outpatient of Beijing Tongren Hospital, Capital Medical University for hearing diagnosis. All subjects underwent acoustic immittance, auditory brainstem response, distortion products otoacoustic emission and other audiological tests. Children were divided into groups according to the age of diagnosis: 0-<3 months group（242 cases）, 3-<6 months group（328 cases）, 6-<12 months group（180 cases）, ≥12 months group（118 cases）, the results of hearing diagnosis, hearing loss degree and types, the relationship between high risk factors and hearing loss in each group were compared and analyzed. Results: The age of diagnosis of 868 children was（7.13±8.29） months. 488 cases with hearing loss accounted for 56.22% and 380 cases with normal hearing accounted for 43.78%. Proportion of different degree of hearing loss of 792 ears from high to low was as follows: mild, 366 ears（46.21%）; moderate, 214 ears（27.02%）; severe, 151 ears（19.07%）; profound, 61 ears（7.70%）. There were statistically significant differences in the proportion of different hearing loss degree among 0-<3 months group, 3-<6 months group, 6-<12 months group and ≥12 months group（ P <0.001）. Pairwise comparison between groups showed that the proportion of mild hearing loss of 0-<3 months group was higher than that in the other three groups（ P <0.05）, there was no significant difference of moderate hearing loss among all groups（ P >0.05）, the proportion of severe hearing loss of ≥12 months group was higher than that of 0-<3 months group（ P <0.05）. The proportion of profound hearing loss with 0-<3 months group was lower than the other three groups（ P <0.05）. In 792 ears with hearing loss, sensorineural hearing loss accounted for 67.42%, conductive hearing loss accounted for 20.71% and mixed hearing loss accounted for 11.87%. Among 98 cases with high risk factors for hearing loss, 58 cases（59.18%） were diagnosed with hearing loss. The incidence of hearing loss with high risk factors ranked from high to low was: craniofacial malformation（93.75%）, family history/congenital genetic syndrome（61.11%）, neonatal intensive care unit（NICU） hospitalization（46.43%） and others（20.00%）. Conclusion: Referrals from maternal and child institutions play an important role in the early detection of children with mild to moderate sensorineural hearing loss. Electrochemical oxidase biosensors have been widely applied in healthcare, environmental measurements and the biomedical field. However, the low and fluctuant oxygen levels in solution and the high anodic detection potentially restrict the assay accuracy. To address these problems, in this work, we constructed a three-phase interface enzyme electrode by sequentially immobilizing H 2 O 2 electrocatalysts and an oxidase layer on a superhydrophobic laser-induced graphene (LIG) array substrate. The LIG-based enzyme electrode possesses a solid-liquid-air three-phase interface where constant and sufficient oxygen can be supplied from the air phase to the enzymatic reaction zone, which enhances and stabilizes the oxidase kinetics. We discovered that the enzymatic reaction rate is 21.2-fold improved over that of a solid-liquid diphase system where oxygen is supplied from the liquid phase, leading to a 60-times wider linear detection range. Moreover, the three-phase enzyme electrode can employ a cathodic measuring principle for oxidase catalytic product H 2 O 2 detection, which could minimize interferences arising from oxidizable molecules in biofluids and increase the detection selectivity. This work provides a simple and promising approach to the design and construction of high-performance bioassay systems.

Objective: To evaluate the feasibility of using an intrarectal Foley catheter during ultrasound-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound (US-HIFU) in patients with benign uterine diseases of the posterior wall beyond the HIFU therapeutic range., Methods: Patients were treated with US-HIFU and lesion changes were monitored using contrast-enhanced MRI from June 2020 to September 2021. A Foley catheter was inserted into the rectum to facilitate a successful US-HIFU ablation. Complications and lesion responses were recorded during the treatment and follow-up., Results: Thirteen patients with 14 lesions beyond the device's treatable area were enrolled. The average placement time and insertion depth of the intrarectal Foley catheter was 7.6 ± 2.7 min and 23.2 ± 7.6 cm, respectively. A median of 50 mL degassed water was injected into the Foley catheter balloon. All 14 lesions were successfully pushed into a treatable area and subjected to HIFU. The average treatment time, irradiation time, and total therapeutic energy of HIFU were 44.2 ± 17.3 min, 394.4 ± 295.7 s, and 73.3 ± 46.6 kJ, respectively. The mean non-perfusion volume (NPV) in all treated lesions was 23.2 ± 19.2 cm3, and the mean NPV ratio was 57.8 ± 16.9%. Major complications were not observed., Conclusion: Intrarectal Foley catheter-assisted US-HIFU is effective and safe. Its clinical application could benefit patients with benign uterine diseases outside the HIFU therapeutic range.

Background: As the COVID-19 global pandemic unfolded, governments recommended wearing face masks as a protective measure. Recent studies have found that a face mask influences perception; but how it affects social perception, especially the judgment of being looked at, is still unknown. This study investigated how wearing a mask influences the judgment of gaze direction by conducting a cone of direct gaze (CoDG) task., Methods: In Experiment 1, three types of masked faces were considered to investigate whether the effect of masks on CoDG is modulated by mask types. Experiment 2 was to further validate the results of Experiment 1 by adding a learning phase to help participants better distinguish N95 and surgical masks. Furthermore, to investigate whether the effect of masks derives from its social significance, a face with only the eye-region (a mouth-cut face) was used as the stimuli in Experiment 3., Results: The results of Experiment 1 found that wearing masks widens the CoDG, irrespective of the mask type. Experiment 2 replicated the results of Experiment 1. Experiment 3 found that the CoDG of N95-masked faces was wider than the mouth-cut and non-masked faces, while no significant difference existed between the CoDG of mouth-cut and non-masked faces, illustrating that the influence of wearing masks on CoDG was due to high-level social significance rather than low-level facial feature information., Conclusion: The results show that face mask increases the feeling of being looked at during the COVID-19 Pandemic. As a group of typical endocrine disrupters, phthalates are simultaneously present in a variety of environmental media and enter human body through multiple exposure pathways. In this study, field monitoring data were used to characterize the skin-air (K lg ), dust-air (K d ), and PM 2.5 -air (K p ) partition coefficients of DiBP, DnBP, and DEHP. The median values of log(K lg ) in the summer and winter were 7.654 and 7.932, 7.265 and 7.902, 9.419 and 9.015 for DiBP, DnBP, and DEHP, respectively, and K lg was significantly higher in the winter. The median K d (m 3 /mg) in the summer (0.036-0.151 for DiBP, 0.021-0.036 for DnBP and 1.479-4.069 for DEHP) were significantly higher than the counterparts in the winter (0.027-0.065 for DiBP, 0.022-0.245 for DnBP, and 0.140-3.250 for DEHP). In addition, K d was associated with material of surface and residence time of dust. The K p values (m 3 /μg) of DiBP, DnBP, and DEHP in the summer (0.053, 0.015, and 0.021) were also significantly higher than the counterparts in the winter (0.011, 0.004, and 0.025). The partition of phthalates was influenced by built environment, such as temperature, humidity, ventilation, indoor chemistry, smoking, and building age. Here we report the evaluation of the frequency of subjective and objective otolaryngologic findings and therapeutic results in 32 patients with mitochondrial encephalomyopathy (MEM) from September 2001 to June 2021. Our analysis included studying the patients' family histories, the clinical manifestations of MEM, and the therapeutic effects of treatments. The patients' ages ranged from 2 to 77 years, with a median age of 12.3 years. We found that MEM ENT symptoms were characterized by hearing loss, dysphagia, and facial weakness. Most cases of sensorineural hearing loss were bilateral symmetrical progressive or sudden deafness since adolescence, which were often underestimated. Associated neuromuscular symptoms required mtDNA testing. Dysphagia and facial weakness occurred preferentially in middle-aged patients, and muscle biopsies were advised. Distortion product otoacoustic emissions and auditory brainstem responsetesting were more sensitive and reliable than pure tone averages for objective monitoring of pathogenesis. Administration of the mitochondrial synthase complex benefited patients with acute episodes. If patients did not fully recover and exhibitedresidual language deficits, hearing aids or cochlear implants were recommended. Counsel was given regarding synthetical treatments for facial weakness, endoscopic circopharyngealmyotomy for dysphagia, and surgical correction of ptosis. This study demonstrates that increased awareness of these symptoms is important to address appropriate interventions and avoid complications such as ablepsia, aphasia, social isolation, malnutrition, aspiration pneumonia, and heart failure in the setting of MEM., (© 2022. Empathy and altruistic behavior are more crucial abilities for pre-service teachers to possess when compared with other study fields. The relationship between empathy and altruistic behavior in Chinese pre-service teachers and their underlying mechanisms, however, has received relatively little attention in the literature. Therefore, the goal of the current study was to examine the links between study fields (i.e., pre-service teachers whose study field is pedagogy and non-pre-service teachers whose study field is non-pedagogy), self-control, emotional empathy (i.e., empathic concern), and altruistic preferences among undergraduates and graduates in five Chinese universities (the age range of participants is 18-20 years; 58.4% women) with the Interpersonal Reactivity Index-C Questionnaire, the Self-Control Scale, and the Chinese Self-Report Altruism Scale tests. The results showed a significant difference between pre-service and non-pre-service teachers in empathic concern and self-control. Furthermore, empathic concern and altruistic behavior tendency of pre-service teachers were significantly higher than those of non-pre-service teachers. Moreover, mediation analyses indicated that empathic concern partially mediated the relationship between study fields and altruistic tendency. Moderated mediation analysis further revealed that self-control buffered the relation between empathic concern and altruistic behavior tendency. Background: Up-to-date information about the trends of age-related hearing loss (ARHL) and how this varies between countries is essential to plan for an adequate health-system response. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the research hotpots and trends in ARHL and to provide the basis and direction for future research., Materials and Methods: The Web of Science Core Collection database was searched and screened according to the inclusion criteria during 2002-2021. Bibliometric analyses were conducted by CiteSpace (Chaomei Chen, Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA, United States) software and VOSviewer (Center for Science and Technology Studies, Leiden University, Leiden, The Netherlands) software., Results: The query identified 1,496 publications, which showed a growth trend of this filed. These publications were from 62 countries, the United States of America (United States) showed its tremendous impact on this field in publication outputs, total citations, and international collaborations, China following in second. The Journal of Hearing Research was the most productive journal. Weijia Kong published the most papers, and the most productive institution was Washington University. The keyword "presbycusis" ranked first in research frontiers and appeared earlier, and the keywords "age-related hearing loss," "risk," "dementia," "auditory cortex," "association," and "decline" began to appear in recent years., Conclusion: The annual number of publications has grown rapidly in the past two decades and will continue to grow. Objectives: School-aged children may experience hearing loss and emotional problems. Previous studies have shown a bidirectional relationship between hearing loss and emotional problems in the elderly population, and we aimed to analyze the association between hearing thresholds and emotional problems in school-aged children., Methods: Based on the Beijing Child Growth and Health Cohort (PROC) study, the hearing screenings were conducted in November 2019 using pure tone audiometry. A total of 1,877 parents completed the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) to assess children's emotional and behavioral status. We used generalized linear regression analysis to assess the potential association of emotional problems with hearing thresholds, based on multiple imputed datasets with a sample size of 1,914., Results: The overall pass rate of hearing screening was 91.5%. The abnormal rate of SDQ total difficulties was 55.8%. Emotional symptoms were positively associated with left ear average hearing thresholds (β = 0.24, 95% CI : 0.08-0.40), and right ear average hearing thresholds (β = 0.18, 95% CI : 0.04-0.32). Conduct problems, hyperactivity/inattention, peer problems, and prosocial behaviors had no association with the pass rate of the hearing screening. Regarding emotional symptoms, boys with many fears and who are easily scared coincided with increased right ear average hearing thresholds (β = 0.67, 95% CI : 0.01-1.33). Girls having many worries, frequently feeling unhappy and downhearted were positively associated with left and right ear average hearing thresholds, respectively (β = 0.96, 95% CI : 0.20-1.73; β = 0.72, 95% CI : 0.07-1.37)., Conclusions: The co-occurrence of hearing problems and emotional problems of children aged 6-8 in Beijing attracts attention. Whether music can influence moral judgment is controversial in the aesthetics and philosophy of music. Aesthetic Autonomy pointed out that music had a morally educational function because of its lyrics or a particular context. The key to resolving the divergence is to select absolute music without lyrics or specific context as the eliciting material. In this study, 84 participants were recruited and randomly divided into three groups to complete the Ultimatum Game (UG) after listening to different stimuli: absolute music, white noise, and no sound. Behavioral results indicated that the participants' acceptance of unfair offers was significantly lower in the music group. Also, participants in the music group have a shorter reaction time for rejecting an unfair offer than other unfair conditions. However, ERP comparison showed no significant difference in medial frontal negativity (MFN) amplitude, which reflects fairness levels, between the music group and the no sound group for either accepting or rejecting the moderately unfair offer. Brain network analyses revealed that participants in the music group showed stronger activation of rewarding circuits, including the ventral striatum, during the decision-making process of rejecting unfair offers, before the decision especially, compared to the no sound group. These results suggest that absolute music can influence fair decision-making. Verbal fluency is an important indicator of human verbal ability. Methods to improve fluency is an interesting issue necessitating investigation. To do this, the current study required participants to randomly receive transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) at 10 Hz, 40 Hz (control frequency), and sham stimulation over the prefrontal cortex before a phonemic fluency task. Background: This study aimed to assess the quality of global guidelines or consensus statements for newborn and childhood hearing screening, as well as to compare various guidelines between other countries and China., Methods: A PROSPERO registered systematic review (number CRD42021242198) was conducted. Multiple electronic databases and government websites including PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, CENTRAL, Cochrane Library, and BMJ Best Practice were searched from inception until May 2021. The latest national and international guidelines, consensus statements, technical specifications, and recommendations regarding newborn or childhood hearing screening that were published in Chinese or English medical journals or elsewhere with the full version available online. The following information was extracted independently by two reviewers for comparative analysis: titles, authors, publication year, country, the source organization, and main key recommendations using systems for assigning the level of evidence and strength of recommendations. The quality of the guidelines was assessed by three independent reviewers using the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation, 2nd edition. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) were calculated to assess among-reviewer agreement., Results: We assessed 15 newborn and 6 childhood hearing screening guidelines, respectively. Most newborn guidelines recommend the 1-3-6 guidelines and pre-discharge screening; however, the specific screening times differ. 93.33% of newborn hearing guidelines recommend "primary screening-re-screening-diagnosis-intervention" for well-babies while 73.33% of the guidelines recommend "initial screening-diagnosis-intervention" for newborns in neonatal intensive care unit (NICU); 33.33% of the newborn hearing guidelines recommended initial screening coverage of > 95% while 46.66% did not mention it. Further, 26.66% of the newborn hearing guidelines recommended a referral rate to diagnosis within 4% while 60% did not mention it. Regarding childhood hearing screening guidelines, the screening populations differed across guidelines (age range: 0-9 years); most guidelines recommend pediatric hearing screening for all preschoolers. Only 50% of the guidelines specify screening and re-screening techniques, including pure-tone hearing screening, OAE, tympanometry, and others. The "Clarity of Presentation" domain achieved the highest mean score, and the lowest was "Editorial Independence" both in newborn and childhood guidelines. Overall score of newborn hearing screening guidelines ranged from 3 (2018 Europe) to 7 (2019 America), with an average score of 5.33. Average score of childhood hearing screening guidelines was 4.78, with the score ranging from 4 (2017 England, 2012 Europe, 2016 WHO) to 6.67 (2011 America). ICC analysis revealed excellent agreement across 21 guidelines (> 0.75)., Conclusions: These findings indicated newborn hearing screening guidelines had superior quality over childhood ones. Comparative analysis suggested that recommendations of the Chinese newborn and pediatric hearing screening protocols are consistent with the mainstream international opinion. Moreover, this analysis demonstrated that "Editorial Independence" and "Stakeholder Involvement" have the greatest opportunities for improvement. A highly precise temperature-feedback photothermal therapy platform in deep tissue is proposed based on all-fiber fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) thermometry, which provides a promising route to realize real-time temperature monitoring in the minimally invasive treatment of tumors. Highly disordered double perovskite Li 2 Zn 2 Mo 3 O 12 (LZMO) phosphors doped with rare earth ions were prepared and intense green upconversion emissions were observed with an ultra-low excitation power. The thermal enhancement of the upconversion luminescence was achieved up to 423 K, which is very beneficial to achieve a good signal-to-noise performance during the temperature-rise period. Superior temperature sensing performance was demonstrated with the maximum absolute sensitivity of 89.9 × 10 -4 at 423 K. The strong upconversion emissions and high temperature sensitivity result in a small temperature error (±0.4 K). The variation of brain functions as healthy ageing has been discussed widely using resting-state brain imaging. Previous conclusions may be misinterpreted without considering the effects of global signal (GS) on local brain activities. Up to now, the variation of GS with ageing has not been estimated. To fill this gap, we defined the GS as the mean signal of all voxels in the gray matter and systematically investigated correlations between age and indices of GS fluctuations. What's more, these tests were replicated with data after hemodynamic response function (HRF) de-convolution and data without noise regression as well as head motion data to verify effects of non-neural information on age. The results indicated that GS fluctuations varied as ageing in three ways. First, GS fluctuations were reduced with age. Second, the GS power transferred from lower frequencies to higher frequencies with age. Third, the GS power was more evenly distributed across frequencies in ageing brain. These trends were partly influenced by HRF and physiological noise, indicating that the age effects of GS fluctuations are associated with a variety of physiological activities. Exposure to phthalates poses adverse health impacts to human beings. In this study, we analyzed 7 phthalates in dust samples, which were collected with vacuum cleaner from 40 to 31 residences in Beijing in summer and winter, respectively. The major phthalates (median concentration in the summer and winter, respectively) were DiBP (55 and 40 ng/mg), DnBP (99 and 30 ng/mg) and DEHP (795 and 335 ng/mg). The concentrations were significantly influenced by season and residence time of house dust. The concentrations of phthalates in dust on plastic surfaces were highest, followed by those on wooden and fabric surfaces. The dust-air partition coefficients (K d ) were calculated: the median values were 0.13, 0.02 and 5.62 m 3 /mg in the summer and 0.06, 0.018 and 0.76 m 3 /mg in the winter for DiBP, DnBP and DEHP, respectively. A comparison with K d * at equilibrium state suggested that partition between air and dust deviated from equilibrium state in both seasons. The results also revealed that dust-phthalates in the summer may completely originate from source materials via direct transfer and external physical process; while dust-phthalates in the winter may come from both air (via partition) and source material (via direct transfer and external physical process). The influence of temperature on dust-phthalate concentrations differed by season, owing to different origin of dust-phthalates in two seasons. Polar organic components in dust, which are products of reactions between O 3 and unsaturated hydrocarbons in dust, likely played an important role in fate and transport of phthalates. The presence of them resulted in the significant associations between dust-phthalate concentrations and air humidity in the summer. Moreover, the impacts of indoor PM 2.5 concentrations, traffic conditions surrounding residence, household lifestyle and number of occupants were also observed. In this study, cerium-doped lanthanum ferrite perovskite oxides (La 1‒x Ce x FeO 3 ) with different A-site were synthesized using a sol-gel method and they were used as ozonation catalyst for p-nitrophenol (PNP) mineralization for the first time. Catalytic activity in terms of total organic carbon (TOC) removal followed the order of La 0.8 Ce 0.2 FeO 3  > La 0.4 Ce 0.6 FeO 3  > La 0.6 Ce 0.4 FeO 3  > La 0.2 Ce 0.8 FeO 3  > LaFeO 3 with 77, 66, 61, 60 and 56% respectively. The synthesized catalysts were characterized by diffraction of X-ray (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM). Moreover, electron spin resonance (ESR) and radicals quenching experiments showed that the active oxygen species in the ozone decomposition process are mainly hydroxyl radical (·OH), and also include superoxide radical (O 2 - ) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ). Furthermore, the superior activity of La 0.8 Ce 0.2 FeO 3 could be attributed to the higher surface area, the richer lattice oxygen, richer surface -OH groups and the facilitated redox Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ and Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ cycling. There are many sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in indoor environments, leading to much higher total indoor VOC concentrations than outdoor counterparts. Given the potential health hazards associated with VOC exposure, it is necessary to estimate the indoor VOC emission strengths. In this study, the indoor and outdoor concentrations of 43 VOCs were concurrently measured in 8 urban residences, Beijing. The indoor/outdoor concentration ratio was used to screen out 36 species having significant indoor sources. A one-compartment steady-state model was developed to estimate the indoor emission strengths of these VOCs, in which ventilation and reaction with ozone were included as sink routes. The order of VOCs in terms of indoor emission strength was d-limonene (a median value of 1.05 g/h), α-pinene (82.50 mg/h), styrene (24.12 mg/h), ß-pinene (9.70 mg/h), formaldehyde (1.97 mg/h), n-dodecane (1.82 mg/h), n-pentadecane (1.66 mg/h), n-hexadecane (1.62 mg/h), n-undecane (1.20 mg/h), acetaldehyde (1.05 mg/h) and 1, 4-dichlorobenzene (0.80 mg/h). The sum of estimates of those VOCs accounted for >95% of total emission strength. Specific indoor sources of those VOCs in the tested homes were identified. Background: Preeclampsia (PE) is a condition of high blood pressure that is usually concurrent with proteinuria in pregnancy. PE complicates the management of both maternal and fetal health and contributes to most adverse pregnancy outcomes, but the mechanism underlying the development of PE remains unclear. In this study, we performed a case-control study to compare the gut microbiota of PE (n = 26), abnormal placental growth (APG, n = 25) and healthy pregnant women (n = 28) and analyzed the potential pathogenic role of gut microbiota in PE progression., Results: The clinical pathophysiological state did not affect the bacterial diversity, while the compositions of the gut microbiota were significantly altered in both the PE and APG groups compared with healthy pregnant women. At the phylum level, TM7 was significantly increased in women with APG. Heterogeneity was observed at the genus level, especially in genera with positive LDA scores, suggesting the stage-dependent effect of gut microbiota on the development of PE. The beneficial bacterium Lactobacillus was markedly depleted in the PE and APG groups but was only correlated with blood pressure (BP) and proteinuria levels in the PE group. Two different bacterial taxa belonged to Lactobacillus showed different correlations (OTU255 and OTU784 were significantly related to PE and APG, respectively)., Conclusions: Our results indicated that shifts in the gut microbiota might occur from the early stages of the development of PE, which is of possible etiological and therapeutic importance., (© 2021. Objective: This study aimed to provide better understanding of the otolaryngologic features, combined with ophthalmologic and neurologic characteristics in mitochondrial encephalomyopathy（MEM）, and to help ENT and auditory practitioner making correct diagnosis as well. Methods: Twenty-eight patients with MEM were enrolled between September 2001 and January 2020. Information about family histories and clinical symptoms was retrospectively analyzed. All patients underwent otorhinolaryngological, ophthalmological and neurological examinations, including: pure-tone audiometry, acoustic immittance（AI）, distortion-product otoacoustic emissions（DPOAE）, auditory brainstem response（ABR）, cochlear micropotential（CM）, speech discrimination score（SDS）, electroneurography（ENoG）, computed tomography（CT） of the temporal bone and cranial magnetic resonance weighted imaging scan（MRI）, muscle biopsy and mtDNA gene testing. Results: ENT subjective manifestations were present in 15 cases （53.6%） with sensorineural hearing loss（SNHL）, 4（14.3%） with tinnitus, 4（14.3%） with facial weakness, 3（10.7%） with dysphagia, 1（3.6%） with auditory agnosia. Ophthalmological and neurological symptoms included ptosis in 16 cases （57.1%）, exercise intolerance in 16（57.1%）, optic atrophy in 15（53.6%）, muscular atrophy in 6（21.4%）, and stroke-like episodes in 5（17.9%）. The results of objective examinations were as follows: DPOAE were not elicited in 18（64.3%） cases, ABR abnormalities in 18（64.3%） cases, hearing threshold shift in 15（53.6%） cases, AI normal and CM was not detected in all cases, SDS decreased in 6（21.4%） cases, facial ENoG abnormalities in 4（14.3%） cases, laryngeal ENoG abnormalities in 3（10.7%） cases, EMG abnormalities in 6（21.4%） cases, and ECG abnormalities in 8（28.6%） cases. Temporal CT were normal, but cranial MRI abnormalities were found in 19 cases（67.9%）, including central nerve demyelination, white matter hyperintensities, generalized cerebellar and cerebral atrophy, multiple cortical/subcortical infarct-like lesions, basal ganglia calcification. Conclusion: Multisystemic syndromes in MEM can present as a variety of otolaryngological, ophthalmological and neurological abnormalities, such as ptosis, audio-visual disturbance, exercise intolerance and stroke-like episodes etc. SNHL, tinnitus, auditory agnosia, facial weakness and dysphagia were ENT specific manifestations. SNHL in MEM is bilateral symmetrical progressive or of sudden onset since teenage. mtDNA testing may be helpful for adolescent patient whose SNHL was associated with neuromuscular symptoms. Muscle biopsy should be considered when middle-aged patients developed facial weakness and dysphagia. Visual attention and visual working memory (VWM) are two major cognitive functions in humans, and they have much in common. A growing body of research has investigated the effect of emotional information on visual attention and VWM. Interestingly, contradictory findings have supported both a negative bias and a positive bias toward emotional faces (e.g., angry faces or happy faces) in the attention and VWM fields. We found that the classical paradigms-that is, the visual search paradigm in attention and the change detection paradigm in VWM-are considerably similar. The settings of these paradigms could therefore be responsible for the contradictory results. In this paper, we compare previous controversial results from behavioral and neuroscience studies using these two paradigms. We suggest three possible contributing factors that have significant impacts on the contradictory conclusions regarding different emotional bias effects; these factors are stimulus choice, experimental setting, and cognitive process. Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) is the key receptor for severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2). However, the susceptibility of the decidua to infection during the peripartum period has not been explored, even though this may affect vertical transmission. The objective of this study was to investigate the expression of ACE2 and related genes in the decidua during delivery. Here, single-cell RNA sequencing was used to characterize the transcriptomes of decidual cells before and after the onset of labor. During the peripartum period, ACE2 expression was highly heterogeneous. ACE2 was expressed principally in decidual stromal cells, uterine smooth muscle cells, and extravillous trophoblasts. Comparison of the transcriptomes of ACE2-positive and ACE2-negative cells indicated that ACE2-positive cells exhibited integrin clusters on the cell surface interactions. ACE2-positive cells were compared before and after labor onset. After delivery, the number of ACE2-positive cells was slightly higher than before delivery. Before labor onset, ACE2-positive decidual stromal cells were in the regulation of membrane protein ectodomain proteolysis cluster. After labor onset, the upregulated genes changed to include cell junction assembly genes. Size, morphology, and composition of airborne particles strongly affect human health and visibility, precipitation, and the kinetic characteristics of particles. In this study, the morphology and chemical composition of particles emitted from conventional (diesel and gasoline) and alternative (CNG and methanol) fuel vehicles were characterized through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX). The SEM images revealed that the size of primary particles (without agglomeration) was approximately 10 nm in the exhaust from all the tested vehicles. The particles emitted from gasoline vehicle (GV), CNG vehicle (CNGV), and methanol vehicle (MV) had the same median diameter, 62 nm, which was smaller than those from heavy diesel vehicle (HDV) and light diesel vehicle (LDV). Soot was observed in the HDV, LDV, and GV samples but not in the CNGV and MV. The fractal dimension, which was used to quantify the degree of irregularity of soot, was 1.752 ± 0.014, 1.789 ± 0.076, and 1.769 ± 0.006 in the exhaust from HDV, LDV, and GV samples, respectively. The particles discharged by all tested vehicles contained the elements C, O, Fe, and Na. The main element in the samples of HDV, LDV, and GV was C, while O was the main element in the samples of alternative fuel vehicles. The profiles of minor elements were more complex in the emissions of alternative fuel vehicles than those in the emissions of conventional fuel vehicles. The results improved our understanding of the morphology and elemental composition of particles emitted from vehicles powered by diesel, gasoline, CNG, and methanol.

Metal-free catalysts are widely considered as promising alternatives to traditional metal-based catalysts, which can effectively activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS). In this study, a novel metal-free catalyst, carbonized polypyrrole (CPPy) was synthesized through high-temperature carbonization of PPy, easily achieving the in situ N doping without the addition of nitrogen sources. Tetracycline (TC) was selected as the target contaminant to assess the catalytic activity of the CPPy/PMS system. Enhanced catalytic activity was observed in CPPy/PMS over a wide pH range (3.0-9.0), and the removal rate of TC by CPPy-3/PMS reached 91.3% after 10 min. After regenerating the used catalyst, the catalytic activity was refreshed, implying its stability and recyclability. The catalytic degradation of TC by CPPy/PMS was mainly attributed to a non-radical process. CPPy, as an intermediary, grabbed electrons from the electron-donating groups of TC and transferred them to the PMS molecule. Thereafter, TC that lost electrons was oxidized and degraded, and the O-O bonds of PMS were destroyed by the transferred electrons to form SO 4 2- and OH - . Moreover, O⋅ 2 - and 1 O 2 were involved in TC degradation. TC degradation pathway was investigated through HPLC-MS analysis. Objectives: The decidua is a tissue that contacts both maternal and foetal components and is pivotal to labour onset due to its location. Due to the heterogeneity of decidual tissue, it is challenging to study its role in the peripartum period. Herein, we analysed the transcriptomes of peripartum decidua at single-cell resolution., Materials and Methods: Single-cell RNA sequencing was performed for 29 231 decidual cells before and after delivery to characterize the transcriptomes., Results: Eight major cell types (including endothelial cells, fibroblasts) and subtypes of decidual stromal cells, extravillous trophoblasts and T cells were identified and found to have various functions. Compared with before delivery, the activation of decidual stromal cell, extravillous trophoblast and T-cell subtypes to different degrees was observed after delivery. Furthermore, the activation involved multiple functions, such as cell proliferation, and several pathways, such as the activator protein 1 pathway. The results of pseudotemporal ordering showed differentiation of decidual stromal cell and extravillous trophoblast subtypes, suggesting inhomogeneity of these subgroups in decidualization (decidual stromal cell) and invasion (extravillous trophoblast)., Conclusions: The peripartum decidual tissue is heterogeneous. Octahedral NaBi(WO4)2:Er3+/Yb3+ phosphors were synthesized by a hydrothermal method. Intense green upconversion emissions from both 2H11/2 → 4I15/2 and 4S3/2 → 4I15/2 transitions of Er3+ ions were observed and the appropriate energy gap between them is very suitable for temperature sensing requirement based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique. A flexible and portable all-fiber temperature sensing device was established and used to assess the temperature sensing characteristics of NaBi(WO4)2:Er3+Yb3+ phosphors. A maximum absolute sensitivity of 0.014 K-1 is achieved at 423 K and the temperature absolute error is -0.5 K to +0.6 K. The stepwise heating and cooling processes confirm the good stability and recyclability of the all-fiber temperature sensor, which lays the foundation for actual temperature measurement. Based on the high flexibility and accuracy of the temperature sensor, the monitoring of body temperature was realized in real time and continuously, which may provide new development prospects for effective health tracking and improvement of medical care quality.

To investigate the heterogeneity of decidual stromal cells (DSCs) and their functional alterations during delivery, we conducted single-cell RNA sequencing analysis to characterize the transcriptomic profiles of DSCs before and after labor onset. According to their transcriptomic profiles, DSCs (6382 cells) were clustered into five subgroups with different functions. Similar to stromal cells, cells in cluster 1 were involved in cell substrate adhesion. On the other hand, cells in clusters 2 and 3 were enriched in signal transduction-related genes. Labor onset led to significant alterations in many pathways, including the activator protein 1 pathway (all clusters), as well as in the response to lipopolysaccharide (clusters 1-3). The downregulated genes were involved in coagulation, ATP synthesis, and oxygen homeostasis, possibly reflecting the oxygen and energy balance during delivery. Objective: To analyze the current status of newborn deafness gene screening from 2016 to 2017 in multiple regions of China, and to provide a reference for further promotion and application. Method: The "newborn deafness gene screening questionnaire" was sent to 41 institutions in eastern, central and western China after expert demonstration. The survey content included status of genetic screening, screening methods, the number of screenings, and the status of positive detections from January 1st, 2016 to December 31th, 2017. Each institution returned the questionnaire, the investigator conducted data verification and quality sampling. Finally, we performed analysis of screening methods and the positive detection rate of each gene on questionnaires with complete data. Result: Forty-one questionnaires were sent out and 41 were returned, the questionnaire return rate was 100%, in which 12 questionnaires were complete. Of the 41 institutions, 15 carried newborn deafness gene screening, with a rate of 36.59%（15/41）. The highest rate was in the east（72.22%, 13/18）, and the differences among the regions were statistically significant. As for the screening methods, among 12 questionnaires with complete data, 9 variants in 4 genes and 20 variants in 4 genes accounted for the highest proportion, both with the rate of 33.33%（4/12）, followed by 15 variants in 4 genes（25%, 3/12） and 5 variants in 3 genes（8.34%, 1/12）. A total of 340, 521 neonates were included in the study, and 17, 036 were positive for screening, with a positive rate of 5.00%. Among them, the single heterozygous mutation rate of GJB2 gene was 2.43%（8269/340, 521）, the biallele mutation rate was 0.02%（56/340, 521）,the single heterozygous mutation rate of SLC26A4 gene was 1.99%（6771/340, 521）, the biallele mutation rate was 0.01%（39/340, 521）,the single heterozygous mutation rate of GJB3 gene was 0.33%（1140/340, 521）, the mitochondrial 12SrRNA gene mutation rate was 0.22%（746/340, 521） and the double-gene heterozygous mutation rate was 0.004%（15/340, 521）. Conclusion: From 2016 to 2017, the newborn deafness gene screening is more extensive in the eastern region of China than in the central and western regions. In institutions that have carried out deafness gene screening, 9 variants in 4 genes and 20 variants in 4 genes are widely used; the GJB2 gene and SLC26A4 gene mutations are the most common. Objectives: The present study aimed to determine the status of a universal newborn hearing screening (UNHS) program being conducted in parts of China, by comparing differences in the program findings between 2016 and 2017, as well as across regions in China., Methods: This study investigated a nationally representative sample of newborns from 26 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities in mainland China. A ''Newborn Hearing Screening Survey'' questionnaire was sent to 43 hearing screening institutions throughout China and the data were analyzed, with appropriate quality control throughout the study process., Results: Twenty-six questionnaires, covering 55.88% (19/34) of the provincial administrative regions in China were appropriately completed. The overall sampling frame comprised 238,795 (year 2016) and 229,185 (year 2017) newborns, respectively. We found differences between two years, the initial screening coverage in 2017 (96.10%) was higher than that in 2016 (94.96%); the referral rate at initial screening in 2017 (9.21%) was lower than that in 2016 (10.26%); and the rescreening rate in 2017 (73.50%) was higher than that in 2016 (68.44%). We found differences across three regions, the rescreening rate were highest in West China, the referral rate at rescreening and the referral rate to diagnostic audiological assessment diagnosis were both highest, while the hearing-loss rate was lowest, in the East China in two years. Overall, 61.54% (n = 16) reported using otoacoustic emissions (OAEs), while 38.46% (n = 10) reported using OAEs in combination with automated auditory brainstem response (AABR) tests, for the initial screening. For rescreening, most sites (n = 19, 73.08%) reported using OAEs in combination with AABR, followed by OAEs only (n = 4, 15.38%) and AABR only (n = 3, 11.54%). Of the twenty-six institutions, 57.69% (n = 15) were equipped with a digital information management system for UNHS program, East China had the highest rate of it (81.82%, 9/11)., Conclusions: This study indicated that implementation of a UNHS program had essentially been achieved in many regions of China under the guidance of technical specifications for newborn hearing screening. Compared with 2016, the overall quality of the UNHS program had improved in 2017 and that in East China was better than in the Midland and West China. Exposure to phthalates has recently become a major public health concern. The information of indoor airborne phthalates and their air-particle partition in real indoor environmental condition is still limited. In this study, the gas- and PM 2.5 -concentrations of 7 phthalates in 40 residences were concurrently measured in summer and winter. The major phthalates (median concentration in the summer and winter, respectively) in indoor air were DMP (2442.3 and 2403.4 ng/m 3 ), DiBP (801.0 and 640.0 ng/m 3 ) and DnBP (5173.2 and 1379.6 ng/m 3 ), whereas the major phthalates in PM 2.5 were DiBP (1055.1 and 585.9 ng/m 3 ) and DnBP (1658.5 and 1517.0 ng/m 3 ) and DEHP (215.1 and 344.9 ng/m 3 ). Air-PM 2.5 partition coefficients (K p ) of DiBP, DnBP and DEHP were calculated: the summer and winter median values (m 3 /μg) were 0.053 and 0.011 for DiBP, 0.010 and 0.004 for DnBP, 0.021 and 0.025 for DEHP, respectively. Air-PM 2.5 partition of DiBP and DnBP approached equilibrium, while that of DEHP did not reach equilibrium in either season. The impacts of built environmental conditions on phthalate concentrations were characterized. Elevated temperature resulted in accumulation of airborne phthalates. Higher air humidity led to more water absorption of aerosols in summer, facilitated mass transfer of phthalates from air to PM 2.5 , and resulted in greater K p of DiBP and DnBP in the summer. Any factors such as proximity to local traffic highway and indoor smoking activities, which can increase indoor PM 2.5 concentrations, resulted in significantly higher airborne phthalate concentrations.
