Octacalcium phosphate (OCP, Ca 8 (PO 4 ) 4 (HPO 4 ) 2 ·5H 2 O) is a notable calcium phosphate due to its biocompatibility, making it a widely studied material for bone substitution. It is known to be a precursor of bone mineral, but its role in biomineralisation remains unclear. While the structure of OCP has been the subject of thorough investigations (including using Rietveld refinements of X-ray diffraction data, and NMR crystallography studies), important questions regarding the symmetry and H-bonding network in the material remain. In this study, it is shown that OCP undergoes a lowering of symmetry below 200 K, evidenced by 1 H, 17 O, 31 P and 43 Ca solid-state NMR experiments. Using ab initio molecular-dynamics (MD) simulations and gauge including projected augmented wave (GIPAW) DFT calculations of NMR parameters, the presence of rapid motions of the water molecules in the crystal cell at room temperature is proved. This information leads to an improved description of the OCP structure at both low and ambient temperatures, and helps explain long-standing issues of symmetry. Remaining challenges related to the understanding of the structure of OCP are then discussed.

Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP) can significantly enhance the sensitivity of solid-state NMR. In DNP, microwave irradiation induces polarization transfer from unpaired electron spins to 1 H nuclear spins via hyperfine couplings and spin-diffusion. The structure of the polarizing agents that host the electron spins is key for DNP efficiency. Currently, only a handful of structures perform well at very high magnetic fields (≥18.8 T), and enhancements are significantly lower than those obtained at lower fields. Here, we introduce a new series of water-soluble nitroxide biradicals with a scaffold augmented by dihydroxypropyl antenna chains that perform significantly better than previous dinitroxides at 18.8 T. The new radical M-TinyPol(OH) 4 yields enhancement factors of ∼220 at 18.8 T and 60 kHz MAS, which is a nearly factor 2 larger than for the previous best performing dinitroxides. The performance is understood through 2 H ESEEM measurements to probe solvent accessibility, supported by Molecular Dynamics simulations, and by experiments on deuterated samples. We find that the deuterated glycerol molecules in the matrix are located mainly in the second solvation shell of the NO bond, limiting access for protonated water molecules, and restricting spin diffusion pathways. This provides a rational understanding of why the dihydroxypropyl chains present in the best-performing structures are essential to deliver the polarization to the bulk solution., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

A Surface OrganoMetallic Chemistry (SOMC) approach is used to prepare a novel hafnium-iridium catalyst immobilized on silica, HfIr/SiO 2 , featuring well-defined [≡SiOHf(CH 2 t Bu) 2 (μ-H) 3 IrCp*] surface sites. Unlike the monometallic analogous materials Hf/SiO 2 and Ir/SiO 2 , which promote n-pentane deuterogenolysis through C-C bond scission, we demonstrate that under the same experimental conditions (1 bar D 2 , 250 °C, 3 h, 0.5 mol %), the heterobimetallic catalyst HfIr/SiO 2 is highly efficient and selective for the perdeuteration of alkanes with D 2 , exemplified on n-pentane, without substantial deuterogenolysis (<2 % at 95 % conversion). Furthermore this HfIr/SiO 2 catalyst is robust and can be re-used several times without evidence of decomposition. Amine-borane dimers and oligomers with varied steric and electronic profiles were prepared via capping agent-controlled AA/BB polycondensations. They were used for transfer hydrogenations to aldehydes, ketones, imines as well as electron-poor alkene/alkyne moieties. The amine-borane Lewis-paired oligomers and the congested bis(amine-borane)s provided the highest yields. This was likely helped by facilitated dissociation (oligomers) or H-bond assistance. In the case of the oligomers, the second equivalent of H 2 present was also engaged in the reaction. Solid-state NMR characterization provides evidence that the boron-containing materials obtained after transfer dehydrogenation are highly similar to those obtained from thermal dehydrogenation. Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP) has recently emerged as a cornerstone approach to enhance the sensitivity of solid-state NMR spectroscopy under Magic Angle Spinning (MAS), opening unprecedented analytical opportunities in chemistry and biology. DNP relies on a polarization transfer from unpaired electrons (present in endogenous or exogenous polarizing agents) to nearby nuclei. Developing and designing new polarizing sources for DNP solid-state NMR spectroscopy is currently an extremely active research field per se , that has recently led to significant breakthroughs and key achievements, in particular at high magnetic fields. This review describes recent developments in this area, highlighting key design principles that have been established over time and led to the introduction of increasingly more efficient polarizing sources. After a short introduction, Section 2 presents a brief history of solid-state DNP, highlighting the main polarization transfer schemes. The third section is devoted to the development of dinitroxide radicals, discussing the guidelines that were progressively established to design the fine-tuned molecular structures in use today. In Section 4, we describe recent efforts in developing hybrid radicals composed of a narrow EPR line radical covalently linked to a nitroxide, highlighting the parameters that modulate the DNP efficiency of these mixed structures. Section 5 reviews recent advances in the design of metal complexes suitable for DNP MAS NMR as exogenous electron sources. In parallel, current strategies that exploit metal ions as endogenous polarization sources are discussed. Section 6 briefly describes the recent introduction of mixed-valence radicals. N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are widely used ligands in transition metal catalysis. Notably, they are increasingly encountered in heterogeneous systems. While a detailed knowledge of the possibly multiple metal environments would be essential to understand the activity of metal-NHC-based heterogeneous catalysts, only a few techniques currently have the ability to describe with atomic-resolution structures dispersed on a solid support. Here, we introduce a new dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) surface-enhanced solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) approach that, in combination with advanced density functional theory (DFT) calculations, allows the structure characterization of isolated silica-supported Pt-NHC sites. Notably, we demonstrate that the signal amplification provided by DNP in combination with fast magic angle spinning enables the implementation of sensitive 13 C- 195 Pt correlation experiments. By exploiting 1 J ( 13 C- 195 Pt) couplings, 2D NMR spectra were acquired, revealing two types of Pt sites. For each of them, 1 J ( 13 C- 195 Pt) value was determined as well as 195 Pt chemical shift tensor parameters. To interpret the NMR data, DFT calculations were performed on an extensive library of molecular Pt-NHC complexes. While one surface site was identified as a bis-NHC compound, the second site most likely contains a bidentate 1,5-cyclooctadiene ligand, pointing to various parallel grafting mechanisms. The methodology described here represents a new step forward in the atomic-level description of catalytically relevant surface metal-NHC complexes. In particular, it opens up innovative avenues for exploiting the spectral signature of platinum, one of the most widely used transition metals in catalysis, but whose use for solid-state NMR remains difficult. Our results also highlight the sensitivity of 195 Pt NMR parameters to slight structural changes.

Magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy experiments are widely employed in the characterization of solid media. The approach is incredibly versatile but deleteriously suffers from low sensitivity, which may be alleviated by adopting dynamic nuclear polarization methods, resulting in large signal enhancements. Paramagnetic metal ions such as Gd 3+ have recently shown promising results as polarizing agents for 1 H, 13 C, and 15 N nuclear spins. We demonstrate that the widely available and inexpensive chemical agent Gd(NO 3 ) 3 achieves significant signal enhancements for the 13 C and 15 N nuclear sites of [2- 13 C, 15 N]glycine at 9.4 T and ∼105 K. Analysis of the signal enhancement profiles at two magnetic fields, in conjunction with electron paramagnetic resonance data, reveals the solid effect to be the dominant signal enhancement mechanism. The signal amplification obtained paves the way for efficient dynamic nuclear polarization without the need for challenging synthesis of Gd 3+ polarizing agents.

The structural characterization of supported molecular catalysts is challenging due to the low density of active sites and the presence of several organic/organometallic surface groups resulting from the often complex surface chemistry associated with support functionalization. Here, we provide a complete atomic-scale description of all surface sites in an N-heterocyclic carbene based on iridium and supported on silica, at all stages of its synthesis. By combining a suitable isotope labeling strategy with the implementation of multinuclear dipolar recoupling DNP-enhanced NMR experiments, the 3D structure of the Ir-NHC sites, as well as that of the synthesis intermediates were determined. As a significant fraction of parent surface fragments does not react during the multistep synthesis, site-selective experiments were implemented to specifically probe proximities between the organometallic groups and the solid support. The NMR-derived structure of the iridium sites points to a well-defined conformation. By interpreting EXAFS spectroscopy and chemical analysis data augmented by computational studies, the presence of two coordination geometries is demonstrated: Ir-NHC fragments coordinated by a 1,5-cyclooctadiene and one Cl ligand, as well as, more surprisingly, a fragment coordinated by two NHC and two Cl ligands. This study demonstrates a unique methodology to disclose individual surface structures in complex, multisite environments, a long-standing challenge in the field of heterogeneous/supported catalysts, while revealing new, unexpected structural features of metallo-NHC-supported substrates. It also highlights the potentially large diversity of surface sites present in functional materials prepared by surface chemistry, an essential knowledge to design materials with improved performances.

Pairing the spectral resolution provided by high magnetic fields at ambient temperature with the enhanced sensitivity offered by dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) is a major goal of modern solid-state NMR spectroscopy, which will allow one to unlock ever-challenging applications. This study demonstrates that, by combining HyTEK2, a hybrid BDPA-nitroxide biradical polarizing agent, with ortho -terphenyl (OTP), a rigid DNP matrix, enhancement factors as high as 65 can be obtained at 230 K, 40 kHz magic angle spinning (MAS), and 18.8 T. The temperature dependence of the DNP enhancement and its behavior around the glass transition temperature ( T g ) of the matrix is investigated by variable-temperature EPR measurements of the electron relaxation properties and numerical simulations. A correlation is suggested between the decrease in enhancement at the passage of the T g and the concomitant drop of both transverse electron relaxation times in the biradical.

Despite decades of extensive studies, the atomic-scale structure of the active sites in heterogeneous Ziegler-Natta (ZN) catalysts, one of the most important processes of the chemical industry, remains elusive and a matter of debate. In the present work, the structure of active sites of ZN catalysts in the absence of ethylene, referred to as dormant active sites, is elucidated from magnetic resonance experiments carried out on samples reacted with increasing amounts of BCl 3 so as to enhance the concentration of active sites and observe clear spectroscopic signatures. Using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and NMR spectroscopies, in particular 2D HYSCORE experiments complemented by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we show that the activated ZN catalysts contain bimetallic alkyl-Ti(III),Al species whose amount is directly linked to the polymerization activity of MgCl 2 -supported Ziegler-Natta catalysts. This connects those spectroscopic signatures to the active species formed in the presence of ethylene and enables us to propose an ethylene polymerization mechanism on the observed bimetallic alkyl-Ti(III),Al species based on DFT computations.

The K 3 Sb 4 BO 13 (KSBO) material undergoes an uncommon symmetry increase upon cooling, from triclinic symmetry at room temperature to monoclinic symmetry at low temperature. The first-order phase transition is accompanied by shrinkage of the unit cell, resulting in the transformation of every pair of head-to-tail triangular BO 3 groups into one B 2 O 6 unit featuring unique edge-sharing BO 4 tetrahedra. This is the first material with B 2 O 6 units formed through temperature lowering and exhibiting a B-O anionic framework composed uniquely of isolated edge-sharing BO 4 tetrahedra. Several techniques including single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments, Raman and 11 B magic-angle-spinning NMR spectroscopies, and, for the first time, B K-edge electron energy loss spectroscopy were used to evidence the rare and discrete B 2 O 6 units. The complete transformation of BO 3 units into B 2 O 6 units makes the KSBO compound the perfect candidate to extract information about B 2 O 6 units whose signal can be unambiguously assigned.

The molecular level characterization of heterogeneous catalysts is challenging due to the low concentration of surface sites and the lack of techniques that can selectively probe the surface of a heterogeneous material. Here, we report the joint application of room temperature proton-detected NMR spectroscopy under fast magic angle spinning (MAS) and dynamic nuclear polarization surface enhanced NMR spectroscopy (DNP-SENS), to obtain the 195 Pt solid-state NMR spectra of a prototypical example of highly dispersed Pt sites (single site or single atom), here prepared via surface organometallic chemistry, by grafting [(COD)Pt(OSi(O t Bu) 3 ) 2 ] ( 1 , COD = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) on partially dehydroxylated silica ( 1@SiO 2 ). Compound 1@SiO 2 has a Pt loading of 3.7 wt %, a surface area of 200 m 2 /g, and a surface Pt density of around 0.6 Pt site/nm 2 . Fast MAS 1 H{ 195 Pt} dipolar-HMQC and S-REDOR experiments were implemented on both the molecular precursor 1 and on the surface complex 1@SiO 2 , providing access to 195 Pt isotropic shifts and Pt-H distances, respectively. For 1@SiO 2 , the measured isotropic shift and width of the shift distribution constrain fits of the static wide-line DNP-enhanced 195 Pt spectrum, allowing the 195 Pt chemical shift tensor parameters to be determined. Overall the NMR data provide evidence for a well-defined, single-site structure of the isolated Pt sites.

The addition of aluminum-based adjuvants in vaccines enhances the immune response to antigens. The strength of antigen adsorption on adjuvant gels is known to modulate vaccine efficacy. However, a detailed understanding of the mechanisms of interaction between aluminum gels and antigens is still missing. Herein, a new analytical approach based on dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) enhanced NMR spectroscopy under magic angle spinning (MAS) is implemented to provide a molecular description of the antigen-adjuvant interface. This approach is demonstrated on hepatitis B surface antigen particles in combination with three aluminum gels obtained from different suppliers. Both noncovalent and covalent interactions between the phospholipids of the antigen particles and the surface of the aluminum gels are identified by using MAS DNP NMR 27 Al and 31 P correlation experiments. Although covalent interactions were detected for only one of the formulations, dipolar recoupling rotational echo adiabatic passage double resonance (REAPDOR) experiments reveal significant differences in the strength of weak interactions., (© 2020 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP) has recently emerged as a key method to increase the sensitivity of solid-state NMR spectroscopy under Magic Angle Spinning (MAS). While efficient binitroxide polarizing agents such as AMUPol have been developed for MAS DNP NMR at magnetic fields up to 9.4 T, their performance drops rapidly at higher fields due to the unfavorable field dependence of the cross-effect (CE) mechanism and AMUPol-like radicals were so far disregarded in the context of the development of polarizing agents for very high-field DNP. Here, we introduce a new family of water-soluble binitroxides, dubbed TinyPols, which have a three-bond non-conjugated flexible amine linker allowing sizable couplings between the two unpaired electrons. We show that this adjustment of the linker is crucial and leads to unexpectedly high DNP enhancement factors at 18.8 T and 21.1 T: an improvement of about a factor 2 compared to AMUPol is reported for spinning frequencies ranging from 5 to 40 kHz, with ε H of up to 90 at 18.8 T and 38 at 21.1 T for the best radical in this series, which are the highest MAS DNP enhancements measured so far in aqueous solutions at these magnetic fields. A novel heterobimetallic tantalum/iridium hydrido complex, [{Ta(CH 2 t Bu) 3 }{IrH 2 (Cp*)}] 1 , featuring a very short metal-metal bond, has been isolated through an original alkane elimination route from Ta(CH t Bu)(CH 2 t Bu) 3 and Cp*IrH 4 . This molecular precursor has been used to synthesize well-defined silica-supported low-coordinate heterobimetallic hydrido species [≡SiOTa(CH 2 t Bu) 2 {IrH 2 (Cp*)}], 5 , and [≡SiOTa(CH 2 t Bu)H{IrH 2 (Cp*)}], 6 , using a surface organometallic chemistry (SOMC) approach. The SOMC methodology prevents undesired dimerization as encountered in solution and leading to a tetranuclear species [{Ta(CH 2 t Bu) 2 }(Cp*IrH)] 2 , 4 . This approach therefore allows access to unique low-coordinate species not attainable in solution. These original supported Ta/Ir species exhibit drastically enhanced catalytic performances in H/D exchange reactions with respect to (i) monometallic analogues as well as (ii) homogeneous systems. In particular, material 6 promotes the H/D exchange between fluorobenzene and C 6 D 6 or D 2 as deuterium sources with excellent productivity (TON up to 1422; TOF up to 23.3 h -1 ) under mild conditions (25 °C, sub-atmospheric D 2 pressure) without any additives.

Biological mineralized tissues are hybrid materials with complex hierarchical architecture composed of biominerals often embedded in an organic matrix. The atomic-scale comprehension of surfaces and organo-mineral interfaces of these biominerals is of paramount importance to understand the ultrastructure, the formation mechanisms as well as the biological functions of the related biomineralized tissue. In this communication we demonstrate the capability of DNP SENS to reveal the fine atomic structure of biominerals, and more specifically their surfaces and interfaces. For this purpose, we studied two key examples belonging to the most significant biominerals family in nature: apatite in bone and aragonite in nacreous shell. As a result, we demonstrate that DNP SENS is a powerful approach for the study of intact biomineralized tissues. Signal enhancement factors are found to be up to 40 and 100, for the organic and the inorganic fractions, respectively, as soon as impregnation time with the radical solution is long enough (between 12 and 24 h) to allow an efficient radical penetration into the calcified tissues. Moreover, ions located at the biomineral surface are readily detected and identified through 31 P or 13 C HETCOR DNP SENS experiments. Noticeably, we show that protonated anions are preponderant at the biomineral surfaces in the form of HPO 4 2- for bone apatite and HCO 3 2- for nacreous aragonite. Finally, we demonstrate that organo-mineral interactions can be probed at the atomic level with high sensitivity. In particular, reliable 13 C-{ 31 P} REDOR experiments are achieved in a few hours, leading to the determination of distances, molar proportion and binding mode of citrate bonded to bone mineral in native compact bone. Aromatic residues are located at structurally important sites of many proteins. Probing their interactions and dynamics can provide important functional insight but is challenging in large proteins. Here, we introduce approaches to characterize the dynamics of phenylalanine residues using 1 H-detected fast magic-angle spinning (MAS) NMR combined with a tailored isotope-labeling scheme. Our approach yields isolated two-spin systems that are ideally suited for artifact-free dynamics measurements, and allows probing motions effectively without molecular weight limitations. The application to the TET2 enzyme assembly of ∼0.5 MDa size, the currently largest protein assigned by MAS NMR, provides insights into motions occurring on a wide range of time scales (picoseconds to milliseconds). We quantitatively probe ring-flip motions and show the temperature dependence by MAS NMR measurements down to 100 K. Interestingly, favorable line widths are observed down to 100 K, with potential implications for DNP NMR. Furthermore, we report the first 13 C R 1ρ MAS NMR relaxation-dispersion measurements and detect structural excursions occurring on a microsecond time scale in the entry pore to the catalytic chamber and at a trimer interface that was proposed as the exit pore. We show that the labeling scheme with deuteration at ca. 50 kHz MAS provides superior resolution compared to 100 kHz MAS experiments with protonated, uniformly 13 C-labeled samples.

The introduction of high-frequency, high-power microwave sources, tailored biradicals, and low-temperature magic angle spinning (MAS) probes has led to a rapid development of hyperpolarization strategies for solids and frozen solutions, leading to large gains in NMR sensitivity. Here, we introduce a protocol for efficient hyperpolarization of 19 F nuclei in MAS DNP enhanced NMR spectroscopy. We identified trifluoroethanol-d 3 as a versatile glassy matrix and show that 12 mm AMUPol (with microcrystalline KBr) provides direct 19 F DNP enhancements of over 100 at 9.4 T. We applied this protocol to obtain DNP-enhanced 19 F and 19 F- 13 C cross-polarization (CP) spectra for an active pharmaceutical ingredient and a fluorinated mesostructured hybrid material, using incipient wetness impregnation, with enhancements of approximately 25 and 10 in the bulk solid, respectively. The adsorption and reaction properties of heterogeneous zeolite catalysts (e.g. for catalytic cracking of petroleum, partial oxidation of natural gas) depend strongly on the types and distributions of Al heteroatoms in the aluminosilicate frameworks. The origins of these properties have been challenging to discern, owing in part to the structural complexity of aluminosilicate zeolites. Herein, combined solid-state NMR and synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction analyses show the Al atoms locate preferentially in certain framework sites in the zeolite catalyst Al-SSZ-70. Through-covalent-bond 2D 27 Al{ 29 Si} J-correlation NMR spectra allow distinct framework Al sites to be identified and their relative occupancies quantified. The analyses show that 94 % of the Al atoms are located at the surfaces of the large-pore interlayer channels of Al-SSZ-70, while only 6 % are in the sub-nm intralayer channels. Thiolate-coordinated ruthenium alkylidene complexes can give high Z-selectivity and stereoretentivity in olefin metathesis. To investigate their applicability as heterogeneous catalysts, we have successfully developed a methodology to easily immobilize prototype ruthenium alkylidenes onto hybrid mesostructured silica via a thiolate tether. In contrast, the preparation of the corresponding molecular complexes appeared very challenging in solution. These prototype supported complexes contain small thiolates but still, they are slightly more Z-selective than their molecular analogues. These results open the door to more active and selective heterogeneous catalysts by supporting more advanced thiolate Ru-complexes.

Dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) has developed into an invaluable tool for the investigation of a wide range of materials. However, the sensitivity gain achieved with many polarizing agents suffers from an unfavorable field and magic angle spinning (MAS) frequency dependence. We present a series of new hybrid biradicals, soluble in organic solvents, that consist of an isotropic narrow electron paramagnetic resonance line radical, α,γ-bisdiphenylene-β-phenylallyl (BDPA), tethered to a broad line nitroxide. By tuning the distance between the two electrons and the substituents at the nitroxide moiety, correlations between the electron-electron interactions and the electron spin relaxation times on one hand and the DNP enhancement factors on the other hand are established. The best radical in this series has a short methylene linker and bears bulky phenyl spirocyclohexyl ligands. In a 1.3 mm prototype DNP probe, it yields enhancements of up to 185 at 18.8 T (800 MHz 1 H resonance frequency) and 40 kHz MAS. We show that this radical gives enhancement factors of over 60 in 3.2 mm sapphire rotors at both 18.8 and 21.1 T (900 MHz 1 H resonance frequency), the highest magnetic field available today for DNP. The effect of the rotor size and of the microwave irradiation inside the MAS rotor is discussed. Finally, we demonstrate the potential of this new series of polarizing agents by recording high field 27 Al and 29 Si DNP surface enhanced NMR spectra of amorphous aluminosilicates and 17 O NMR on silica nanoparticles.

Dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) is a powerful way to overcome the sensitivity limitation of magic-angle-spinning (MAS) NMR experiments. However, the resolution of the DNP NMR spectra of proteins is compromised by severe line broadening associated with the necessity to perform experiments at cryogenic temperatures and in the presence of paramagnetic radicals. High-quality DNP-enhanced NMR spectra of the Acinetobacter phage 205 (AP205) nucleocapsid can be obtained by combining high magnetic field (800 MHz) and fast MAS (40 kHz). These conditions yield enhanced resolution and long coherence lifetimes allowing the acquisition of resolved 2D correlation spectra and of previously unfeasible scalar-based experiments. This enables the assignment of aromatic resonances of the AP205 coat protein and its packaged RNA, as well as the detection of long-range contacts, which are not observed at room temperature, opening new possibilities for structure determination., (© 2018 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Identification of surfaces at the molecular level has benefited from progress in dynamic nuclear polarization surface enhanced NMR spectroscopy (DNP SENS). However, the technique is limited when using highly sensitive heterogeneous catalysts due to secondary reaction of surface organometallic fragments (SOMFs) with stable radical polarization agents. Here, we observe that in non-porous silica nanoparticles (NPs) ( d particle = 15 nm) some DNP enhanced NMR or SENS characterizations are possible, depending on the metal-loading of the SOMF and the type of SOMF substituents (methyl, isobutyl, neopentyl). This unexpected observation suggests that aggregation of the nanoparticles occurs in non-polar solvents (such as ortho -dichlorobenzene) leading to (partial) protection of the SOMF inside the interparticle space, thereby preventing reaction with bulky polarization agents. We discover that the DNP SENS efficiency is correlated with the hydrophilicity of the SOMF/support, which depends on the carbon and SOMF concentration. Nitrogen sorption measurements to determine the BET constant ( C BET ) were performed. This constant allows us to predict the aggregation of silica nanoparticles and consequently the efficiency of DNP SENS. Under optimal conditions, C BET > 60, we found signal enhancement factors of up to 30.

Elucidating the binding mode of carboxylate-containing ligands to gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) is crucial to understand their stabilizing role. A detailed picture of the three-dimensional structure and coordination modes of citrate, acetate, succinate and glutarate to AuNPs is obtained by 13 C and 23 Na solid-state NMR in combination with computational modelling and electron microscopy. The binding between the carboxylates and the AuNP surface is found to occur in three different modes. These three modes are simultaneously present at low citrate to gold ratios, while a monocarboxylate monodentate (1κO 1 ) mode is favoured at high citrate:gold ratios. The surface AuNP atoms are found to be predominantly in the zero oxidation state after citrate coordination, although trace amounts of Au δ + are observed. 23 Na NMR experiments show that Na + ions are present near the gold surface, indicating that carboxylate binding occurs as a 2e - L-type interaction for each oxygen atom involved. This approach has broad potential to probe the binding of a variety of ligands to metal nanoparticles.

Dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) has recently emerged as a tool to enhance the sensitivity of solid-state NMR experiments. However, so far high enhancements (>100) are limited to relatively low magnetic fields, and DNP at fields higher than 9.4 T significantly drops in efficiency. Here we report solid-state Overhauser effect DNP enhancements of over 100 at 18.8 T. This is achieved through the unexpected discovery that enhancements increase rapidly with increasing magic angle spinning (MAS) rates. The measurements are made using 1,3-bisdiphenylene-2-phenylallyl dissolved in o-terphenyl at 40 kHz MAS. We introduce a source-sink diffusion model for polarization transfer which is capable of explaining the experimental observations. The advantage of this approach is demonstrated on mesoporous alumina with the acquisition of well-resolved DNP surface-enhanced 27 Al cross-polarization spectra.

Air-stable catalysts consisting of tantalum nitride nanoparticles represented as a mixture of Ta x N y and TaO x N y with diameters in the range of 0.5 to 3 nm supported on highly dehydroxylated silica were synthesized from TaMe 5 (Me = methyl) and dimeric Ta 2 (OMe) 10 with guidance by the principles of surface organometallic chemistry (SOMC). Characterization of the supported precursors and the supported nanoparticles formed from them was carried out by IR, NMR, UV-Vis, extended X-ray absorption fine structure, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies complemented with XRD and high-resolution TEM, with dynamic nuclear polarization surface enhanced NMR spectroscopy being especially helpful by providing enhanced intensities of the signals of 1 H, 13 C, 29 Si, and 15 N at their natural abundances. The characterization data provide details of the synthesis chemistry, including evidence of (a) O 2 insertion into Ta-CH 3 species on the support and (b) a binuclear to mononuclear transformation of species formed from Ta 2 (OMe) 10 on the support. A catalytic test reaction, cyclooctene epoxidation, was used to probe the supported nanoparticles, with 30% H 2 O 2 serving as the oxidant. The catalysts gave selectivities up to 98% for the epoxide at conversions as high as 99% with a 3.4 wt% loading of Ta present as Ta x N y /TaO x N y .

Aqueous acrylamide gels can be used to provide dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) NMR signal enhancements of around 200 at 9.4 T and 100 K. The enhancements are shown to increase with crosslinker concentration and low concentrations of the AMUPol biradical. This DNP matrix can be used in situations where conventional incipient wetness methods fail, such as to obtain DNP surface enhanced NMR spectra from inorganic nanoparticles. We report 17 O dynamic nuclear polarisation (DNP) enhanced solid-state NMR experiments at 18.8 T. Several formulations were investigated on the Mg(OH) 2 compound. A signal enhancement factor of 17 could be obtained when the solid particles were incorporated into a glassy o-terphenyl matrix doped with BDPA using the Overhauser polarisation transfer scheme whilst the cross effect mechanism enabled by TEKPol yielded a slightly lower enhancement but more time efficient data acquisition.

The spatial arrangement of atoms is directly linked to chemical function. A fundamental challenge in surface chemistry and catalysis relates to the determination of three-dimensional structures with atomic-level precision. Here we determine the three-dimensional structure of an organometallic complex on an amorphous silica surface using solid-state NMR measurements, enabled through a dynamic nuclear polarization surface enhanced NMR spectroscopy approach that induces a 200-fold increase in the NMR sensitivity for the surface species. The result, in combination with EXAFS, is a detailed structure for the surface complex determined with a precision of 0.7 Å. We observe a single well-defined conformation that is folded toward the surface in such a way as to include an interaction between the platinum metal center and the surface oxygen atoms.

Nuclear spin hyperpolarization of 13 C-labelled metabolites by dissolution dynamic nuclear polarization can enhance the NMR signals of metabolites by several orders of magnitude, which has enabled in vivo metabolic imaging by MRI. However, because of the short lifetime of the hyperpolarized magnetization (typically <1 min), the polarization process must be carried out close to the point of use. Here we introduce a concept that markedly extends hyperpolarization lifetimes and enables the transportation of hyperpolarized metabolites. The hyperpolarized sample can thus be removed from the polarizer and stored or transported for use at remote MRI or NMR sites. We show that hyperpolarization in alanine and glycine survives 16 h storage and transport, maintaining overall polarization enhancements of up to three orders of magnitude.

Dynamic Nuclear Polarization Surface Enhanced NMR Spectroscopy (DNP SENS) is an effective method to significantly improve solid-state NMR investigation of solid surfaces. The presence of unpaired electrons (polarizing agents) is crucial for DNP, but it has drawbacks such as leading to faster nuclear spin relaxation, or even reaction with the substrate under investigation. The latter can be a particular problem for heterogeneous catalysts. Here, we present a series of carbosilane-based dendritic polarizing agents, in which the bulky dendrimer can reduce the interaction between the solid surface and the free radical. We thereby preserve long nuclear T ' 2 of the surface species, and even successfully enhance a reactive heterogeneous metathesis catalyst.

Dynamic Nuclear Polarization Surface Enhanced NMR Spectroscopy (DNP SENS) is an emerging technique that allows access to high-sensitivity NMR spectra from surfaces. However, DNP SENS usually requires the use of radicals as an exogenous source of polarization, which has so far limited applications for organometallic surface species to those that do not react with the radicals. Here we show that reactive surface species can be studied if they are immobilized inside porous materials with suitably small windows, and if bulky nitroxide bi-radicals (here TEKPol) are used as the polarization source and which cannot enter the pores. The method is demonstrated by obtaining significant DNP enhancements from highly reactive complelxes [([triple bond, length as m-dash]Si-O-)W(Me) 5 ] supported on MCM-41, and effects of pore size (6.0, 3.0 and 2.5 nm) on the performance are discussed., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2016.)

The design of novel heterogeneous catalysts with multiple adjacent functionalities is of high interest to heterogeneous catalysis. Herein, we report a method to obtain a majority of bifunctional acid-base pairs on SBA15. Aniline reacts with SBA15 by opening siloxane bridges leading to N -phenylsilanamine-silanol pairs. In contrast with ammonia treated surfaces, the material is stable under air/moisture. Advanced solid state MAS NMR (2D 1 H- 1 H double-quantum, 1 H- 13 C HETCOR) experiments and dynamic nuclear polarization enhanced 29 Si and 15 N spectra demonstrate both the close proximity between the two moieties and the formation of a covalent Si-N surface bond and confirm the design of vicinal acid-base pairs. This approach was successfully applied to the design of a series of aniline derivatives of bifunctional SBA15. A correlation between the substituent effects on the aromatic ring (Hammett parameters) with the kinetics of a model Knoevenagel reaction is observed.

We report a simple and general method for the hyperpolarization of condensed gases by dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP). The gases are adsorbed in the pores of structured mesoporous silica matrices known as HYPSOs (HYper Polarizing SOlids) that have paramagnetic polarizing agents covalently bound to the surface of the mesopores. DNP is performed at low temperatures and moderate magnetic fields (T = 1.2 K and B0 = 6.7 T). Frequency-modulated microwave irradiation is applied close to the electron spin resonance frequency (f = 188.3 GHz), and the electron spin polarization of the polarizing agents of HYPSO is transferred to the nuclear spins of the frozen gas. A proton polarization as high as P((1)H) = 70% can be obtained, which can be subsequently transferred to (13)C in natural abundance by cross-polarization, yielding up to P((13)C) = 27% for ethylene.

DNP-enhanced solid-state NMR spectroscopy under magic angle spinning (MAS) is rapidly developing into a powerful analytical tool to investigate the structure of a wide range of solid materials, because it provides unsurpassed sensitivity gains. Most developments and applications of DNP MAS NMR were so far reported at moderate spinning frequencies (up to 14 kHz using 3.2 mm rotors). Here, using a 1.3 mm MAS DNP probe operating at 18.8 T and ∼100 K, we show that signal amplification factors can be increased by up to a factor two when using smaller volume rotors as compared to 3.2 mm rotors, and report enhancements of around 60 over a range of sample spinning rates from 10 to 40 kHz. Spinning at 40 kHz is also shown to increase (29)Si coherence lifetimes by a factor three as compared to 10 kHz, substantially increasing sensitivity in CPMG type experiments. The contribution of quenching effects to the overall sensitivity gain at very fast MAS is evaluated, and applications are reported on a functionalised mesostructured organic-inorganic material.

Obtaining detailed structural information of reaction intermediates remains a key challenge in heterogeneous catalysis because of the amorphous nature of the support and/or the support interface that prohibits the use of diffraction-based techniques. Combining isotopic labeling and dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) increases the sensitivity of surface enhanced solid-state NMR spectroscopy (SENS) towards surface species in heterogeneous alkene metathesis catalysts; this in turn allows direct determination of the bond connectivity and measurement of the carbon-carbon bond distance in metallacycles, which are the cycloaddition intermediates in the alkene metathesis catalytic cycle. Lu[CH(SiMe3)2]3 reacts with [SiO2-700] to give [(≡SiO)Lu[CH(SiMe3)2]2] and CH2(SiMe3)2. [(≡SiO)Lu[CH(SiMe3)2]2] is characterized by solid-state NMR and EXAFS spectroscopy, which show that secondary Lu···C and Lu···O interactions, involving a γ-CH3 and a siloxane bridge, are present. From X-ray crystallographic analysis, the molecular analogues Lu[CH(SiMe3)2]3-x[O-2,6-tBu-C6H3]x (x = 0-2) also have secondary Lu···C interactions. The (1)H NMR spectrum of Lu[CH(SiMe3)2]3 shows that the -SiMe3 groups are equivalent to -125 °C and inequivalent below that temperature, ΔG(⧧)(Tc = 148 K) = 7.1 kcal mol(-1). Both -SiMe3 groups in Lu[CH(SiMe3)2]3 have (1)JCH = 117 ± 1 Hz at -140 °C. The solid-state (13)C CPMAS NMR spectrum at 20 °C shows three chemically inequivalent resonances in the area ratio of 4:1:1 (12:3:3); the J-resolved spectra for each resonance give (1)JCH = 117 ± 2 Hz. The (29)Si CPMAS NMR spectrum shows two chemically inequivalent resonances with different values of chemical shift anisotropy. Similar observations are obtained for Lu[CH(SiMe3)2]3-x[O-2,6-tBu-C6H3]x (x = 1 and 2). The spectroscopic data point to short Lu···Cγ contacts corresponding to 3c-2e Lu···Cγ-Siβ interactions, which are supported by DFT calculations. Calculated natural bond orbital (NBO) charges show that Cγ carries a negative charge, while Lu, Hγ, and Siβ carry positive charges; as the number of O-based ligands increases so does the positive charge at Lu, which in turns shortens the Lu···Cγ distance. The change in NBO charges and the resulting changes in the spectroscopic and crystallographic properties show how ligands and surface-support sites rearrange to accommodate these changes, consistent with Pauling's electroneutrality concept.

Further understanding of the chemisorption properties towards CO and H2 on silica-supported Ru nanoparticles is crucial in order to rationalize their high activity towards methanation, Fischer Tropsch and Water Gas Shift reactions. Ru nanoparticles having the same chemisorption properties towards CO and H2 were synthesized on different silica-based supports in order to combine various analytical techniques and obtain complimentary detailed information on their structure; while silica spheres were used in order to obtain high-resolution TEM images of the Ru nanoparticles, high surface area silica-based material (SBA) allowed CO chemisorption to be monitored by (13)C NMR spectroscopy. In addition, a model of the hcp-based Ru nanoparticles observed by HR-TEM was used to predict by ab initio calculations the CO and H2 coverages on the Ru nanoparticle under different conditions of interest in catalysis. For both adsorbates we show and quantify how the adsorption properties of the nanoparticle differ from the commonly used slab models. For the case of CO we show how the top, bridge and hollow sites can be present on the Ru nanoparticle, providing a description at atomistic level in good agreement with the IR spectroscopy measurements.

Efficient dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) in solids, which enables very high sensitivity NMR experiments, is currently limited to temperatures of around 100 K and below. Here we show how by choosing an adequate solvent, (1)H cross effect DNP enhancements of over 80 can be obtained at 240 K. To achieve this we use the biradical TEKPol dissolved in a glassy phase of ortho-terphenyl (OTP). We study the solvent DNP enhancement of both TEKPol and BDPA in OTP in the range from 100 to 300 K at 9.4 and 18.8 T. Surprisingly, we find that the DNP enhancement decreases only relatively slowly for temperatures below the glass transition of OTP (Tg = 243 K), and (1)H enhancements around 15-20 at ambient temperature can be observed. We use this to monitor molecular dynamic transitions in the pharmaceutically relevant solids Ambroxol and Ibuprofen.

We show how dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) enhanced solid-state NMR spectroscopy can be used to characterize polymorphs and solvates of organic solids. We applied DNP to three polymorphs and one hydrated form of the asthma drug molecule theophylline. For some forms of theophylline, sample grinding and impregnation with the radical-containing solution, which are necessary to prepare the samples for DNP, were found to induce polymorphic transitions or desolvation between some forms. We present protocols for sample preparation for solid-state magic-angle spinning (MAS) DNP experiments that avoid the polymorphic phase transitions in theophylline. These protocols include cryogrinding, grinding under inert atmosphere, and the appropriate choice of the impregnating liquid. By applying these procedures, we subsequently demonstrate that two-dimensional correlation experiments, such as (1)H-(13)C and (1)H-(15)N HETCOR or (13)C-(13)C INADEQUATE, can be obtained at natural isotopic abundance in reasonable times, thus enabling more advanced structural characterization of polymorphs.

An Ir(I) (NHC)-based hybrid material was prepared using a methodology which allowed the precise positioning and isolation of the Ir centers along the pore channels of a silica framework. The full characterization of the material by solid-state NMR spectroscopy showed that the supported Ir sites were stabilized by the silica surface, as low-coordinated single-site complexes. The material is extremely efficient for the hydrogenation of functional alkenes. The catalytic performance (TOF and TON) is one to two orders of magnitude higher than those of their molecular Ir analogues, and could be related to the prevention of the bimolecular deactivation of Ir complexes observed under homogeneous conditions., (© 2015 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Competitive adsorption of dilute quantities of certain organic molecules and water at silicate surfaces strongly influence the rates of silicate dissolution, hydration, and crystallization. Here, we determine the molecular-level structures, compositions, and site-specific interactions of adsorbed organic molecules at low absolute bulk concentrations on heterogeneous silicate particle surfaces at early stages of hydration. Specifically, dilute quantities (∼0.1% by weight of solids) of the disaccharide sucrose or industrially important phosphonic acid species slow dramatically the hydration of low-surface-area (∼1 m(2)/g) silicate particles. Here, the physicochemically distinct adsorption interactions of these organic species are established by using dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) surface-enhanced solid-state NMR techniques. These measurements provide significantly improved signal sensitivity for near-surface species that is crucial for the detection and analysis of dilute adsorbed organic molecules and silicate species on low-surface-area particles, which until now have been infeasible to characterize. DNP-enhanced 2D (29)Si{(1)H}, (13)C{(1)H}, and (31)P{(1)H} heteronuclear correlation and 1D (29)Si{(13)C} rotational-echo double-resonance NMR measurements establish hydrogen-bond-mediated adsorption of sucrose at distinct nonhydrated and hydrated silicate surface sites and electrostatic interactions with surface Ca(2+) cations. By comparison, phosphonic acid molecules are found to adsorb electrostatically at or near cationic calcium surface sites to form Ca(2+)-phosphonate complexes. Although dilute quantities of both types of organic molecules effectively inhibit hydration, they do so by adsorbing in distinct ways that depend on their specific architectures and physicochemical interactions. The results demonstrate the feasibility of using DNP-enhanced NMR techniques to measure and assess dilute adsorbed molecules and their molecular interactions on low-surface-area materials, notably for compositions that are industrially relevant.

Hyperpolarization of substrates for magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) and imaging (MRI) by dissolution dynamic nuclear polarization (D-DNP) usually involves saturating the ESR transitions of polarizing agents (PAs; e.g., persistent radicals embedded in frozen glassy matrices). This approach has shown enormous potential to achieve greatly enhanced nuclear spin polarization, but the presence of PAs and/or glassing agents in the sample after dissolution can raise concerns for in vivo MRI applications, such as perturbing molecular interactions, and may induce the erosion of hyperpolarization in spectroscopy and MRI. We show that D-DNP can be performed efficiently with hybrid polarizing solids (HYPSOs) with 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-piperidine-1-oxyl radicals incorporated in a mesostructured silica material and homogeneously distributed along its pore channels. The powder is wetted with a solution containing molecules of interest (for example, metabolites for MRS or MRI) to fill the pore channels (incipient wetness impregnation), and DNP is performed at low temperatures in a very efficient manner. This approach allows high polarization without the need for glass-forming agents and is applicable to a broad range of substrates, including peptides and metabolites. During dissolution, HYPSO is physically retained by simple filtration in the cryostat of the DNP polarizer, and a pure hyperpolarized solution is collected within a few seconds. The resulting solution contains the pure substrate, is free from any paramagnetic or other pollutants, and is ready for in vivo infusion.

Grafting (ArO)2W(═O)(═CHtBu) (ArO = 2,6-mesitylphenoxide) on partially dehydroxylated silica forms mostly [(≡SiO)W(═O)(═CHtBu)(OAr)] along with minor amounts of [(≡SiO)W(═O)(CH2tBu)(OAr)2] (20%), both fully characterized by elemental analysis and IR and NMR spectroscopies. The well-defined oxo alkylidene surface complex [(≡SiO)W(═O)(═CHtBu)OAr] is among the most active heterogeneous metathesis catalysts reported to date in the self-metathesis of cis-4-nonene and ethyl oleate, in sharp contrast to the classical heterogeneous catalysts based on WO3/SiO2.

Mesoporous hybrid silica-organic materials containing homogeneously distributed stable mono- or dinitroxide radicals covalently bound to the silica surface were developed as polarization matrixes for solid-state dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) NMR experiments. For TEMPO-containing materials impregnated with water or 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane, enhancement factors of up to 36 were obtained at ∼100 K and 9.4 T without the need for a glass-forming additive. We show that the homogeneous radical distribution and the subtle balance between the concentration of radical in the material and the fraction of radicals at a sufficient inter-radical distance to promote the cross-effect are the main determinants for the DNP enhancements we obtain. The material, as well as an analogue containing the poorly soluble biradical bTUrea, is used as a polarizing matrix for DNP NMR experiments of solutions containing alanine and pyruvic acid. The analyte is separated from the polarization matrix by simple filtration.

Direct evidence of the conformation of a Pd-N heterocyclic carbene (NHC) moiety imbedded in a hybrid material and of the Pd-NHC bond were obtained by dynamic nuclear polarization surface-enhanced NMR spectroscopy (DNP SENS) at natural abundance in short experimental times (hours). Overall, this silica-based hybrid material containing well-defined Pd-NHC sites in a uniform environment displays high activity and selectivity in the semihydrogenation of alkynes into Z-alkenes (see figure)., (Copyright © 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We present the molecular level characterization of a phenylpyridine-based periodic mesoporous organosilicate and its post-functionalized organometallic derivatives through the fast acquisition of high quality natural isotopic abundance 1D (13)C, (15)N, and (29)Si and 2D (1)H-(13)C and (1)H-(29)Si solid-state NMR spectra enhanced with dynamic nuclear polarization.

Secondary interactions are demonstrated to direct the stability of well-defined Ru-NHC-based heterogeneous alkene metathesis catalysts. By providing key stabilization of the active sites, higher catalytic performance is achieved. Specifically, they can be described as interactions between the metal center (active site) and the surface functionality of the support, and they have been detected by surface-enhanced (1)H-(29)Si NMR spectroscopy of the ligand and (31)P solid-state NMR of the catalyst precursor. They are present only when the metal center is attached to the surface via a flexible linker (a propyl group), which allows the active site to either react with the substrate or relax, reversibly, to the surface, thus providing stability. In contrast, the use of a rigid linker (here mesitylphenyl) leads to a well-defined active site far away from the surface, stabilized only by a phosphine ligand which under reaction conditions leaves probably irreversibly, leading to faster decomposition and deactivation of the catalysts.

Dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) solid-state NMR has been applied to powdered microcrystalline solids to obtain sensitivity enhancements on the order of 100. Glucose, sulfathiazole, and paracetamol were impregnated with bis-nitroxide biradical (bis-cyclohexyl-TEMPO-bisketal, bCTbK) solutions of organic solvents. The organic solvents were carefully chosen to be nonsolvents for the compounds, so that DNP-enhanced solid-state NMR spectra of the unaltered solids could be acquired. A theoretical model is presented that illustrates that for externally doped organic solids characterized by long spin-lattice relaxation times (T(1)((1)H) > 200 s), (1)H-(1)H spin diffusion can relay enhanced polarization over micrometer length scales yielding substantial DNP enhancements (ε). ε on the order of 60 are obtained for microcrystalline glucose and sulfathiazole at 9.4 T and with temperatures of ca. 105 K. The large gain in sensitivity enables the rapid acquisition of (13)C-(13)C correlation spectra at natural isotopic abundance. It is anticipated that this will be a general method for enhancing the sensitivity of solid-state NMR experiments of organic solids.
