Constructing a restoration strategy from bauxite residue to Technosols is a cost-effective and sustainable strategy for addressing the ecological and environmental issues caused by high alkalinity, salinity, and fine-grained bauxite residues. However, the quantitative contribution of restoration strategies on the upper bauxite residue-derived Technosols to the underlying untreated bauxite residue in the short term remains poorly understood. This study investigated the mediating mechanisms of vegetation and microbial metabolic effects on the alkalinity, nutrient content, and structure of the underlying bauxite residue (20-50 cm) through a simulated ecological reconstruction of the bauxite residue stockpile. Results indicated that implementing plant restoration strategies resulted in the content of polyphenolic compounds, lipids, tannins, and carbohydrates in bauxite residue dissolved organic matter (DOM) increased significantly from 52.5, 8.2, 3.3, and 2.0 % to 54.4, 10.4, 5.6, and 2.8 %, respectively, while the content of condensed aromatics, unsaturated hydrocarbons, and proteins/amino sugars decreased significantly from 15.5, 12.0, and 6.5 % to 12.1, 9.7, and 5.1 %, respectively. The newly produced molecules were concentrated in regions with low O/C and high H/C ratios, suggesting that short-term vegetation restoration strategies facilitate the transformation of substrate DOM towards easily decomposable and highly bioavailable substances. This led to the migration of the newly produced molecules to the underlying bauxite residue, and as a result, the protein and soluble microbial products of the underlying bauxite residue increased significantly, as well as the pH, exchangeable Na, and < 0.054 mm particles decreased from 10.2, 44.2 cmol kg -1 , and 28.1 % to 9.7, 27.1 cmol kg -1 , and 19.4 %, respectively, available nitrogen, urease, and 1-2 mm particles increased from 7.3 mg kg -1 , 0.2 U mg -1 , and 14.5 % to 7.6 mg kg -1 , 0.3 U kg -1 , and 21.7 %, respectively. We have experimentally demonstrated a constant envelope linear frequency modulated orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CE-LFM-OFDM) signal by employing an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal to phase modulate the linear frequency modulation (LFM) carrier. The experimental verification was conducted in the photonic-based integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system working at 94.5 GHz. In our system, a 10-km optical fiber and a 1-m free space transmission are incorporated, achieving seamless fiber-wireless networks. As a result, we achieved data rates ranging from 8 to 15.4 Gbit/s and range resolution ranging from 1.5 to 7.5 cm, respectively.

Congenital (cTTP) and immune-mediated (iTTP) thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura are serious and rare clotting disorders resulting from a deficiency in the ADAMTS13 enzyme. A systematic review was conducted using the Ovid ® MEDLINE & Embase databases to synthesize the epidemiology and burden of cTTP and iTTP worldwide (from January 1, 2010, to February 6, 2020, with an update that covered the period January 1, 2020-February 11, 2022). Outcomes of interest were incidence and prevalence of TTP, incidence of acute episodes, mortality, burden of illness (eg complications, healthcare utilization, patient-reported outcomes) and disease management. A total of 221 eligible observational studies were included. The incidence rate of acute episodes ranged from 0.19-0.35 person-years in adult patients with cTTP, and 1.81-3.93 per million persons per year for iTTP in the general population. Triggers of acute episodes were similar for cTTP and iTTP, with pregnancy and infection the most commonly observed. Exacerbation in patients with iTTP varied widely, ranging from 2.4-63.1%. All-cause mortality was observed in 0-13.4% of patients with cTTP, across studies and follow-up periods, and in 1.1% (median follow-up: 0.4 years) to 18.8% (1 year) of patients with iTTP during acute episodes. Cardiovascular, renal, and neurological disease were common complications. TTP also led to work disturbances, feelings of anxiety and depression, and general activity impairment. TTP treatment regimens used were generally reflective of current treatment guidelines. The evidence identified describes a high patient burden, highlighting the need for effective treatment regimens leading to improvements in outcomes. Considerable evidence gaps exist, particularly for disease epidemiology, patient-reported outcomes, costs of disease management, and associated healthcare resource utilization. Purpose: To explore the management improvement measures and application effects of reducing noise in postanesthesia care unit (PACU) based on Comfort Theory., Design: Randomized controlled clinical trial., Methods: A total of 1,300 patients who underwent general anesthesia or combined nerve block anesthesia and were transferred to the PACU in May and August 2021 were divided into a control group (630 cases) and a study group (670 cases) based on time. The control group received routine PACU management, and management based on Comfort Theory to reduce the noise in the PACU was implemented with the study group, including physiological comfort, psychological and spiritual comfort, social and cultural comfort, and environmental comfort. The overall noise level in PACU, retention time in PACU, incidence of nursing adverse events, and patient satisfaction were compared before and after implementation., Findings: In the observation group, the noise values of the four time periods in the PACU were significantly decreased, the retention time was (59.92 ± 22.0) minutes, the incidence of nursing adverse events and vomiting was 0.1%, and the patient satisfaction was 99.8%, which were significantly better than those in the control group, and the differences were statistically significant (P < .05)., Conclusions: The management of noise reduction in PACU based on Comfort Theory can significantly reduce the noise level in PACU, effectively shorten the PACU retention time, reduce the incidence of nursing adverse events, and improve the nursing satisfaction of patients., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest None to report., (Copyright © 2024. The extracellular matrix (ECM) shapes the stem cell fate during differentiation by exerting relevant biophysical cues. However, the mechanism of stem cell fate decisions in response to ECM-backed complex biophysical cues has not been fully understood due to the lack of versatile ECMs. Here, we designed two versatile ECMs using colloidal self-assembly technology to probe the mechanisms of their effects on mechanotransduction and stem cell fate regulation. Binary colloidal crystals (BCC) with a hexagonally close-packed structure, composed of silica (5 μm) and polystyrene (0.4 μm) particles as well as a polydimethylsiloxane-embedded BCC (BCCP), were fabricated. They have defined surface chemistry, roughness, stiffness, ion release, and protein adsorption properties, which can modulate the cell adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation of human adipose-derived stem cells (hASCs). On the BCC, hASCs preferred osteogenesis at an early stage but showed a higher tendency toward adipogenesis at later stages. In contrast, the results of BCCP diverged from those of BCC, suggesting a unique regulation of ECM-dependent mechanotransduction. The BCC-mediated cell adhesion reduced the size of the focal adhesion complex, accompanying an ordered spatial organization and cytoskeletal rearrangement. This morphological restriction led to the modulation of mechanosensitive transcription factors, such as c-FOS, the enrichment of transcripts in specific signaling pathways such as PI3K/AKT, and the activation of the Hippo signaling pathway. Epigenetic analyses showed changes in histone modifications across different substrates, suggesting that chromatin remodeling participated in BCC-mediated mechanotransduction. This study demonstrates that BCCs are versatile artificial ECMs that can regulate human stem cells' fate through unique biological signaling, which is beneficial in biomaterial design and stem cell engineering.

It is predicted that oxygen minimum zones (OMZs) in the ocean will expand as a consequence of global warming and environmental pollution. This will affect the overall microbial ecology and microbial nitrogen cycle. As one of the world's largest alluvial estuaries, the Yangtze Estuary has exhibited a seasonal OMZ since the 1980s. In this study, we have uncovered the microbial composition, the patterns of community assembly and the potential for microbial nitrogen cycling within the water column of the Yangtze Estuary, with a particular focus on OMZ. Based on the 16 S rRNA gene sequencing, a specific spatial variation in the composition of prokaryotic communities was observed for each water layer, with the Proteobacteria (46.1%), Bacteroidetes (20.3%), and Cyanobacteria (10.3%) dominant. Stochastic and deterministic processes together shaped the community assembly in the water column. Further, pH was the most important environmental factor influencing prokaryotic composition in the surface water, followed by silicate, PO 4 3- , and distance offshore (p < 0.05). Water depth, NH 4 + , and PO 4 3- were the main factors in the bottom water (p < 0.05). At last, species analysis and marker gene annotation revealed candidate nitrogen cycling performers, and a rich array of nitrogen cycling potential in the bottom water of the Yangtze Estuary. The determined physiochemical parameters and potential for nitrogen respiration suggested that organic nitrogen and NO 3 - (or NO 2 - ) are the preferred nitrogen sources for microorganisms in the Yangtze Estuary OMZ. Background and Purpose: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is called "immortal cancer", and it affects the quality of life, disability rate and even the survival of patients. This study aimed to observe the clinical efficacy, and adverse reactions of intradermal acupuncture (IA) in the treatment of RA patients with liver and kidney deficiency syndrome., Materials and Methods: 132 RA patients were split into an IA group and a sham IA group at a 1:1 ratio. Both groups were assessed before and after the intervention with the assessments: a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome evaluation, the Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ), the Disease Activity Score 28 (DAS28) and serum C-reactive protein (CRP)., Results: There was a statistically significant difference in TCM syndrome evaluation, HAQ, DAS28, and CRP between both groups before and after treatment (P < 0.01). The improvement of TCM syndrome evaluation (95% CI [1.14(0.38-1.89)]; P = 0.001), HAQ (95% CI [2.00(1.00-3.00)]; P = 0.003), and DAS28 (95% CI [0.11(0.02-0.20)]; P = 0.021) in the IA group was more obvious than that in the sham IA group (P < 0.05), except for CRP (95% CI [0.50(- 2.09 to 7.08)], P = 0.786). The difference in CRP outcome changes between the two groups was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). Both groups had comparable results in the implementation of RA in the upper and lower extremity acupoints and did not differ due to different sites (IA group: P = 0.852; sham IA group: P = 0.861). The comparison of effective rate of the upper limb as well as that of the lower limb was statistically significant (P = 0.001). The long-term accumulation of coal waste on the surface during natural weathering leads to the inevitable migration of heavy metals contained in the coal waste, which increases the likelihood of environmental contamination and health risks. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) and Fe/Al oxides play crucial roles in the transformation and bioavailability of heavy metals. Thus, we analyzed the Fe/Al oxide content and DOM molecular composition in coal waste with different degrees of weathering and explored the influence of DOM chemical diversity and Fe/Al oxides on the potential mobility of heavy metals. Results showed that weathering-driven decrease in Fe oxides (Fe d , Fe O , and Fe p decreased from 82.4, 37.5, and 3.6 mg∙L -1 to 41.3, 24.7, and 2.3 mg∙L -1 , respectively) led to decreases in the reducible fractions of V and Cr. The potential environmental risks of more toxic metals of Cd and As, also increased as a result of the residual fractions decreased to 32.6 % and 41.3 %, respectively. Weathering caused an increase in oxygen-to‑carbon ratio, double-bond equivalent, modified aromaticity index, nominal oxidation state of carbon, and molecular diversity and a decrease in (m/z) w and (H/C) w , suggesting that the DOM of highly weathered coal waste possessed high unsaturation, aromatic structures, hydrophilicity, and strong oxidative characteristics. Additionally, although V MF and Cr MF showed significant negative correlations with O/C ratio, polyphenolic, carbohydrates, and condensed aromatics, pH remained a key environmental factor determining the potential environmental risks of V and Cr by changing the residual fractions. The mobilities of Cd and As were significantly negatively correlated with those of Fe/Al oxides, particularly Fe d , Fe O , Fe p , and Al p . Surface coating technology is broadly demanded across various fields, including marine and biomedical materials; therefore, a facile and versatile approach is desired. This study proposed an attractive surface coating strategy using photo-crosslinkable benzophenone (BP) moiety for biomaterials application. BP-containing "bioglue" polymer can effectively crosslink with all kinds of surfaces and biomolecules. Upon exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, free radical reaction from the BP glue facilitates the immobilization of diverse molecules onto different substrates in a straightforward and user-friendly manner. Through either one-step, mixing the bioglue with targeted biomolecules, or two-step methods, pre-coating the bioglue and then adding targeted biomolecules, polyacrylic acid (PAA), cyclic RGD-containing peptides, and proteins (gelatin, collagen, and fibronectin) were successfully immobilized on substrates. After drying the bioglue, targeted biomolecules can still be immobilized on the surfaces preserving their bioactivity. Cell culture on biomolecule-immobilized surfaces using NIH 3T3 fibroblasts and human bone marrow stem cells (hBMSCs) showed significant improvement of cell adhesion and activity compared to the unmodified control in serum-free media after 24 hours. Furthermore, hBMSCs on the fibronectin-immobilized surface showed an increased calcium deposition after 21 days of osteogenic differentiation, suggesting that the immobilized fibronectin is highly bioactive. Coke plays a key role as the skeleton of the charge column in BF. The gas path formed by the coke layer in the BF has a decisive influence on gas permeability. At high temperatures, the interface between coke and ore undergoes a melting reaction of coke and a reduction reaction of ore. The better the reducibility of the ore, the more conducive it is to the coupling reaction of ore and coke. The melting loss reaction of coke becomes more intense, and the corresponding strength of coke will decrease, which will affect the permeability of the blast furnace and is not conducive to the smooth operation of the blast furnace. Especially with a deterioration in iron ore quality, BF operation faces severe challenges, which makes it necessary to find an effective way to strengthen BF operation. In this study, a melting-dropping furnace was used to develop and clarify the high-temperature interaction between coke and iron ores with different layer thicknesses. The influencing factors were studied by establishing a gas permeability mathematical model and observing the metallographic microscope images of samples after the coke solution loss reaction. The relationships between coke layer thickness, distribution of gas flow, and pressure drop were obtained. The results showed that, under certain conditions, the gas permeability property of a furnace burden has been improved after the coke layer thickness increased. Upon observing the size of coke particles at the interface reaction site, the degree of melting loss reaction can be determined. A smaller particle size indicates more melting loss reaction. A dripping eigenvalue for molten metal was introduced to evaluate the dynamic changes in the comprehensive dripping properties of molten metal of furnace burden, which showed that the dripping eigenvalue for the molten metal could deteriorate because of the unruly thickness and the coke layer thickness should be limited through considering the operational indicators of the blast furnace.

Formaldehyde (FA) exposure has been reported to induce or aggravate allergic asthma. Infection is also a potential risk factor for the onset and aggravation of asthma. However, no study has addressed the effects of FA exposure on asthmatic patients with respiratory infection. FA is ubiquitous in environment and respiratory infections are common in clinics. Therefore, it is necessary to explore whether FA exposure leads to the further worsening of symptoms in asthma patients with existing respiratory infection. In the present study, ovalbumin (OVA) was used to establish the murine asthma model. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was intratracheal administrated to mimic asthma with respiratory infection. The mice were exposed to 0.5 mg/m 3 FA. FA exposure did not induce a significant aggravation on OVA induced allergic asthma. However, the lung function of specific airway resistance (sRaw), histological changes and cytokines production were greatly aggravated by FA exposure in OVA/LPS induced murine asthma model. Monocyte-derived macrophages (MDMs) were isolated from asthmatic patients. Exposure of MDMs to FA and LPS resulted in increased TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β, and nitric oxide (NO) production. Lactate produciton and lactate dehydrogenase A (LDHA) expression were found to be upregulated by FA in OVA/LPS induced asthmatic mice and LPS stimulated MDMs. Furthermore, glycolysis inhibitor 2-Deoxy-d-glucose attenuated FA and LPS induced TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β, and NO production. We conclude that FA exposure can lead to the aggravation of allergic asthma with infection through induction of glycolysis. Risk assessment is a critical part of risk management for contaminated sites. However， in the specific management practice of As-contaminated sites， it is difficult to obtain realistic health risks for contaminated sites based on the total amount of pollutants and determined values of the model， thus preventing the control requirements of later remediation to be met. An increasing number of studies have recently been conducting risk assessments by considering bioavailability， modification parameters， and combined probabilistic models. To improve the accuracy of risk assessment results， taking a large As-contaminated site as a case， 432 sampling sites were set up and collected at different depths to analyze the level and distribution characteristics of As pollution， and probabilistic risk assessment was conducted with the modification of model parameters through literature research and Monte Carlo simulation. Then， the impact of traditional methods and probabilistic methods on health risk assessment was explored in comparison. The results indicated that ω （As） in the top soil of the study area ranged from 2.70-97.0 mg·kg -1 ， with a spatial variation coefficient of 0.61 and weaker spatial continuity. The carcinogenic risk and hazard index obtained by the traditional risk assessment method were 2.12E-4 and 8.36， respectively， which obviously overestimated the actual risk level and were not conductive to the refined management of As-contaminated sites. Combined with modification of model parameters and probabilistic risk assessment， the non-carcinogenic risk for adults and children was found to be at an acceptable level， and the carcinogenic risk was reduced by nearly an order of magnitude compared to that in the conventional method. Considering the relative biological effectiveness （RBA） of As， the 95% quantile of the total carcinogenic risk was 1.24E-5， a reduction of up to 36.41% compared to the uncorrected corresponding risk value of 1.95E-5. The carcinogenic risk of soil As for adults and children in the study area exceeded acceptable risk levels 1E-6， with oral ingestion of soil being the primary route of exposure. In addition， the results of the sensitivity analysis of the parameters showed that As concentration， daily oral ingestion rate of soils， and exposure duration of children had relatively larger effects for health risks. This work will provide a methodological and theoretical basis for achieving accurate risk assessment of As-contaminated sites and provide concepts for refined risk management.

To evaluate the association of uric acid (UA) with adverse outcomes and its potential mediator in patients with left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD) and pulmonary hypertension (PH). We retrospectively analyzed 234 patients with LVDD and PH. The baseline characteristics of patients with low UA (≤ 330 µmol/L) group were compared with high UA (> 330 µmol/L) group. Adverse outcomes included all-cause mortality, cardiac death and heart failure (HF) hospitalization. Their association with UA and the mediator were evaluated using Cox regression and mediation analysis. The mediation proportion was further quantified by the R mediation package. During a mean follow-up of 50 ± 18 months, there were 27 all-cause deaths, 18 cardiovascular deaths and 41 incidents of HF hospitalization. Multivariable Cox regression analysis showed UA was an independent risk factor of adverse outcomes in LVDD and PH patients, even after adjusting for age, sex, body mass index, medical histories, systolic blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride, eGFR, BNP and medications. The hazard ratios (HRs) for UA (per 10 µmol/L increase) were as below: for all-cause mortality, HR 1.143, 95% CI 1.069-1.221, P < 0.001; for cardiac death, HR 1.168, 95% CI 1.064-1.282, P = 0.001; for HF hospitalization, HR 1.093, 95% CI 1.035-1.155, P = 0.001. Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) played a partial mediation role in the association, and the mediation proportion for NLR on the UA-adverse outcomes were 21%, 19% and 17%, respectively. In patients of LVDD with PH, higher UA level was independently correlated with adverse outcomes. Background and Objective: Definity is an ultrasound contrast agent consisting of phospholipids-encapsulated perfluoropropane (PFP), also known as perflutren, microspheres, which is initially designed to enhance echocardiographic ultrasound images. With no pharmacologic action, Definity can increase the backscatter of ultrasound resulting enhanced ultrasound signals. The objective of this study was to determine the pharmacokinetics (PKs), Pharmacodynamics (PDs) and safety of Definity in healthy male and female Chinese volunteers., Methods: A simple GC-MS method was developed and applied to simultaneously quantify PFP both in human whole blood and in expired air using Perfluorobutane (PFB) as internal standard. Meanwhile, the blood microbubble Doppler intensities were continuously monitored as companion PDs by a Doppler ultrasonography system using a non-imaging method., Results: After intravenous infusion of 10 µL/kg of PFP within 30 seconds, the mean AUC last of the pharmacokinetic analysis set was 0.000653 (uL/mL)*min, the average AUC ∞ was 0.001051 (uL/mL)*min. The main coefficient of variation of parameters were within 30%. In this trial, the blood drug concentration of female subjects was lower than that of males. Female C max , AUC last and AUC ∞ were lower than males', T max and t 1/2 was close to males', V ss and CL were slightly higher than males'. The concentration of PFP in the expired air of the subject reached the maximum value 1-2 min after administration and the PFP accumulation curve in the expired air began to become flat at 9.5-11 min after administration. The PFP in the expired air at the last sampling point of most subjects was still measurable. The results of the analysis showed that female subjects had slightly more and faster PFP excretion via the lungs than males. The change of blood drug concentration in this trial was related to the change process of Doppler signal intensity. The trend of the two was close, but the peak time of blood drug concentration was slightly delayed compared with the peak time of the Doppler signal intensity. The results showed that female t max-pd , t 10 was earlier than male, and women have lower AUC pd than men., Conclusion: The pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of Definity in blood and expired air were systematically evaluated for the first time in this study. The PK/PD analysis results of this trial showed that the change of blood concentration was related to the change process of Doppler signal intensity, the trend of the two was close and expired air are the main excretion pathways of Definity. Wild resources of Auricularia cornea (A. polytricha) are abundant in China, and genetic diversity and genetic relationships analysis of A. cornea can provide basis for germplasm resource utilization and innovation and molecular marker-assisted breeding. In this study, 22 Auricularia strains collected were identified as A. cornea based on ITS sequence analysis, and its genetic diversity was examined by ISSR and SRAP markers. The results showed that a total of 415 bands were amplified by 11 selected ISSR primers, with an average amplification of 37.73 bands per primer, and the mean values of Ne, I, and H were 1.302, 0.368, and 0.219, respectively. A total of 450 bands were amplified by 10 SRAP primers, with an average of 45 bands per primer, and the average of Ne, I, and H were 1.263, 0.302, and 0.183, respectively. The unweighted pair-group method with arithmetic means analysis based on ISSR-SRAP marker data revealed that the genetic similarity coefficient between the tested strains was 0.73-0.97, and the strains could be divided into five groups at 0.742, which had a certain correlation with regional distribution. The results of PCOA and population structure analysis based on ISSR-SRAP data also produced similar results. These results demonstrate the genetic diversity and distinctness among wild A. cornea and provide a theoretical reference for the classification, breeding, germplasm innovation, utilization, and variety protection of A. cornea resources.

Alkalinity regulation and nutrient accumulation are critical factors in the construction of plant and microbial communities and soil formation in bauxite residue, and are extremely important for sustainable vegetation restoration in bauxite residue disposal areas. However, the establishment and succession of microbial communities driven by plant colonization-mediated improvements in the physicochemical properties of bauxite residues remain poorly understood. Thus, in this study, we determined the saline-alkali properties and dissolved organic matter (DOM) components under plant growth conditions and explored the microbial community diversity and structure using Illumina high-throughput sequencing. The planting of Elymus dahuricus (E. dahuricus) in the bauxite residue resulted in a significant decrease in total alkalinity (TA), exchangeable Na, and electrical conductivity (EC) as well as the release of more tryptophan-like protein compounds and low-molecular-weight humic substances associated with biological activities into the bauxite residue substrate. Taxonomical analysis revealed an initial-stage bacterial and fungal community dominated by alkaline-tolerant Actinobacteriota, Firmicutes, and Ascomycota, and an increase in the relative abundances of the phyla Bacteroidota, Cyanobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Gemmatimonadota. The biological activities of phylum Actinobacteriota, Bacteroidota, and Gemmatimonadota were significantly associated with protein-like and UVA-like humic substances. As eutrophic bacteria, Proteobacteria participate in the transformation of humic substances and can not only utilize small molecules of organic matter and convert them into humic substances but also promote the gradual conversion of humic acids into simple molecular compounds. Our results suggest that plant roots secrete organic matter and microbial metabolites as the main biogenic organic matter that participates in the establishment and succession of the microbial community in bauxite residues. Objectives: This study aims to examine the associations among fear of childbirth, psychological distress, resilience, and sleep quality among Chinese pregnant women., Methods: A cross-sectional survey was carried out between January 2022 to March 2022 among pregnant women who met the inclusion criteria and sought healthcare services at The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine in Guangdong Province, Southern China. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire that included sociodemographic characteristics, childbirth attitudes questionnaires (CAQ), hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS), Connor-Davidson resilience scale (CD-RISC), and Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI). A generalized additive model and moderated mediation analysis were employed for data analysis., Results: A non-linear and negative association between fear of childbirth and sleep quality was found in the second trimester and antenatal period. Psychological distress significantly mediated the relationship between fear of childbirth and sleep quality (first trimester: β = 0.044, 95%CI:0.022-0.071; second trimester: β = 0.029, 95%CI:0.009-0.056; third trimester: β = 0.064, 95%CI:0.046-0.088; antenatal period: β = 0.050, 95%CI:0.037-0.063). The moderating role of resilience between fear of childbirth and sleep quality was significant (second trimester: β=-0.006, 95%CI:-0.012-0.001, P = 0.025; antenatal period: β=-0.004, 95%CI:-0.007--0.001, P = 0.014), as well as between fear of childbirth and psychological distress (first trimester: β=-0.016, 95%CI:-0.026--0.005, P = 0.004; antenatal period: β=-0.005, 95%CI:-0.009--0.001, P = 0.014)., Conclusions: Fear of childbirth, psychological distress, and resilience are three important factors affecting sleep quality in Chinese pregnant women., (© 2023. We experimentally demonstrate a 214.7 Tbit/s generalized mutual information (GMI) estimated throughput by ultra-wideband wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) transmission in standard single-mode fiber (SSMF). With 50-GHz grid, 396 transmission channels are used to deliver 49 GBaud probabilistically constellation-shaped (PCS) 256 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) and PCS-64QAM signals. Silicon photonic integrated transceiver is employed to complete electro-optic and optic-electro conversion of the modulated signals. S, C, and L-band rare-earth-doped amplifiers enable the 19.8 THz bandwidth WDM transmission without the assistance of distributed Raman amplification. The measured data rate shows great potential for Silicon photonic devices deployed in ultra-wideband WDM transmission.

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of precise rehabilitation therapy guided by three-dimensional computed tomography (3D-CT) reconstruction technology in hip fracture patients through a retrospective cohort study., Method: Data were retrospectively collected from 60 patients aged over 60 who had undergone hip fracture surgery. They were divided into two groups based on their chosen rehabilitation method: a control group and a test group. The study collected demographic data, fracture characteristics, and quality of life indicators to assess the impact of rehabilitation on economic indicators and daily living activities (ADL). Additionally, it included assessments of muscle strength, joint mobility, hip function, postoperative complications, and records of hospitalization information and costs. Cognitive function was also assessed postoperatively., Results: There were no significant differences in demographic data, fracture characteristics, ADL, or Fugl-Meyer assessment (FMA) between the two groups. However, the test group exhibited significantly higher post-surgery muscle strength recovery and hip mobility compared to the control group (P<0.05). Background: Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) is mainly localised in syncytiotrophoblasts and cytotrophoblasts, and is involved in pregnancy regulation. However, data on the association between SIRT1 and pre-eclampsia (PE) remains limited. This study aimed to investigate the role of SIRT1 in PE pathophysiology., Methods: Placental SIRT1 expression, as well as serum SIRT1, placental growth factor (PlGF), and soluble FMS-like tyrosine kinase 1 (sFlt-1) levels, were measured using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), western blotting, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays in 40 healthy pregnant women (NP group) and 40 women with severe PE (PE group). Additionally, the effects of SIRT1 on the migration, invasion, PlGF, and sFlt-1 secretion of HTR-8/SVneo cells were analysed., Results: SIRT1 expression was significantly reduced in the placenta of patients with severe PE compared with that in healthy pregnant women. Compared with the NP group, serum SIRT1 and PlGF expression was significantly lower in the PE group; however, the expression of serum sFlt-1 was significantly higher in the PE group. Correlation analysis showed that in the PE group, placental SIRT1 protein levels positively correlated with serum PlGF levels ( r  = 0.468, P  = .002) and negatively correlated with serum sFlt-1 levels ( r  = -0.542, P  < .001). Cells with downregulated SIRT1 had a significantly shorter migration distance and a prominently reduced number of invasive cells compared with the corresponding negative control group, suggesting that SIRT1 deficiency may inhibit the migration and invasive ability of HTR-8/SVneo cells. The opposite results were observed after transfection with lentivirus overexpressing SIRT1. Compared with the corresponding controls, cells with downregulated SIRT1 had significantly reduced PlGF levels and significantly increased sFlt-1 levels in the cell culture supernatants, whereas SIRT1 overexpression produced the opposite results., Conclusions: SIRT1 deficiency may contribute to the pathogenesis of pre-eclampsia by reducing trophoblastic migration, invasion, and PlGF secretion and increasing sFlt-1 secretion.

Marine environments wherein long-term microbial oxygen consumption exceeds oxygen replenishment can be associated with oxygen minimum zones (OMZ). The Bay of Bengal OMZ (BOB-OMZ) is one of the most intense OMZs globally. To assess the contribution of bacterial oxygen consumption to oxygen loss in BOB-OMZ, we measured bacterial production (BP), temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen (DO) in the whole water column. We then compared the estimated bacterial oxygen demand (BOD) with diapycnal oxygen supply (DOS) at depths of 50-200 m in the southern BOB in January 2020. The average BP was 3.53 ± 3.15 μmol C m -3 h -1 in the upper 200 m of four stations, which was lower than those reported in other tropical waters. The vertical distribution of BP differed between the open ocean and nearshore areas. In the open ocean, temperature and DO were the most important predictors for BP in the whole water column. In the nearshore areas, when DO increased sharply from the suboxic state, extremely high BP occurred at 200 m. N7-methylguanosine (m 7 G) modification has been notably linked with the development of many tumors. However, no investigations have been conducted on whether m 7 G-related miRNA (m 7 G-miRNA) is a prognostic index of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Therefore, this investigation aimed to establish a predictive m 7 G-miRNA signature for efficient HCC prognosis and elucidate the associated immune cell infiltration (ICI) and functions in the tumor microenvironment. RNA sequencing and clinical data on 375 HCC and 50 healthy tissue samples were acquired from The Cancer Genome Atlas database. The m 7 G-miRNA regulators methyltransferase-like 1 and WD repeat domain 4 were acquired from the TargetScan database. Univariate Cox regression analysis was conducted on the 63 differentially expressed m 7 G-miRNAs identified. A prognostic signature that consisted of seven miRNAs was identified. According to their risk scores, individuals with HCC were divided into high-risk (HR) and low-risk (LR) cohorts. A Kaplan-Meier test revealed that survival in the HR HCC patients was poorer than in the LR cohort (p < 0.001). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curves of 1-, 3-, and 5-year overall survival were 0.706, 0.695, and 0.715, respectively. A nomogram of sex, risk score, age, and stage indicated the HCC patients' overall survival. Furthermore, it was indicated that the HR and LR patients had different degrees of ICI and immune function. A pathway enrichment analysis revealed the association of several immunity-linked pathways with the risk model. In conclusion, the signature established has great prognostic value and could be used as a new immunotherapy target for individuals with HCC.

Objective: Mutations in the NLRP3gene have previously been linked to certain forms of cancer, but there have not been any specific studies examining the association between NLRP3 polymorphisms and cervical cancer (CC). This study was therefore designed to investigate the effect of NLRP3 gene polymorphisms on HPV infection and cervical cancer in southern Chinese population., Methods: Multiplex PCR and next-generation sequencing approaches were used to assess the NLRP3 rs10754558 and rs10733113 polymorphisms in 404 cervical lesion patients, including 227 diagnosed with CC and 177 diagnosed with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia(CIN), with 419 healthy female controls being included for comparison. Correlations between the rs10754558 and rs10733113 genotypes and alleles in these patients and CC and CIN were then analyzed., Results: No correlations were found between NLRP3 rs10754558 and rs10733113 and human papillomavirus(HPV) infection status. Relative to the healthy control group, the NLRP3 rs10754558 GG genotype, CG + GG genotype, and G allele frequencies were significantly increased among patients with cervical lesions (CC and CIN) (OR = 1.815,P = 0.013;OR = 1.383, P = 0.026; OR = 1.284, P = 0.014,respectively), whereas no such differences were observed for rs10733113. A higher cervical lesion risk was detected for patients over the age of 45 exhibiting the rs10754558 GG genotype (OR = 1.848, P = 0.040). Additionally, the risk of CC was elevated in patients with the rs10754558 GG genotype or the G allele relative to patients with the CC genotype or the C allele(OR = 1.830, P = 0.029; OR = 1.281, P = 0.039). The rs10733113 genotypes or alleles were not significantly associated with CC risk (P > 0.05). No association between rs10754558 and rs10733113 genotypes and CC patient clinicopathological features were observed (P > 0.05). Serum NLRP3, IL-1β, and IL-18 levels were significantly elevated in CC patients relative to healthy controls(P < 0.05). Relative to the CC genotype, CC patients harboring the rs10754558 GG genotype exhibited significantly elevated IL-1β and IL-18 levels(P < 0.05)., Conclusion: The rs10754558 polymorphism in the NLRP3 gene may contribute to an elevated risk of CC, although it is not significantly correlated with HPV infection and CC progression., (© 2023. WRKY transcription factors in plants are known to be able to mediate either transcriptional activation or repression, but the mechanism regulating their transcriptional activity is largely unclear. We found that group IId WRKY transcription factors interact with OBERON (OBE) proteins, forming redundant WRKY-OBE complexes in Arabidopsis thaliana. The coiled-coil domain of WRKY transcription factors binds to OBE proteins and is responsible for target gene selection and transcriptional repression. The PHD finger of OBE proteins binds to both histones and WRKY transcription factors. WRKY-OBE complexes repress the transcription of numerous stress-responsive genes and are required for maintaining normal plant growth. Several WRKY and OBE mutants show reduced plant size and increased drought tolerance, accompanied by increased expression of stress-responsive genes. Moreover, expression levels of most of these WRKY and OBE genes are reduced in response to drought stress, revealing a previously uncharacterized regulatory mechanism of the drought stress response. Chemical speciation of mercury (Hg) in clouds largely determines the photochemistry of Hg in the atmosphere and consequently influences Hg deposition on the surface through precipitation. Cloud water chemistry has notably changed over the last decade in response to global changes, however, the effects on Hg speciation remain poorly understood. During summer 2021, we collected sixty cloud water samples at Mt. Tai in eastern China and compared the cloud chemistry and Hg speciation with our previous findings during summer 2015. The results showed that although there were no statistically significant differences in the concentrations of total Hg (THg), dissolved Hg (DHg), and particulate Hg (PHg), there was a distinct shift in DHg species from the predominated Hg-DOM (78.6% in 2015 campaign) to the more homogeneously distributed Hg(OH) 2 (28.4% in 2021 campaign), HgBr 2 (26.5%), Hg-DOM (17.3%) and HgBrOH (17.0%). Changes in cloud water chemistry, particularly the significant increase in pH values to 6.49 ± 0.27 and unexpectedly high levels of bromide ions (Br - , 0.19 ± 0.22 mg L -1 ), were found to drive the changing of Hg speciation by enhancing Hg(II) hydrolysis and binding by Br - . Elevated Br - originating primarily from the continent likely caused noticeable differences in the dominating DHg species between cloud water sourced from marine and continental regions. Interlayer functionalization modulation is essential for modifying LDHs and improving their selectivity and adsorption capacity for target pollutants. In this work, Glu@NiFe-LDH was synthesized using a simple one-step hydrothermal method and tested for its ability to remove CrO 4 2- from wastewater. The modification significantly increased the composite material's removal ability by 2-3 times, up to 98.36 mg g -1 . The behavior of CrO 4 2- adsorption on Glu@NiFe-LDH was further studied by adjusting the affecting factors ( i.e. , temperature, pH, contact time, initial concentration, and interfering substance), and the adsorption behavior was confirmed as a spontaneous and chemisorption process. And the result was that Glu@NiFe-LDH demonstrated high capacity, efficiency, stability, and selectivity for the adsorption of CrO 4 2- in a single electrolyte and natural water containing competing anions. Furthermore, molecular dynamics simulations ( NVT ensemble) were employed to further reveal the mechanism of glutamic acid modification on LDH at the microscopic scale. Additionally, the IRI analysis method revealed the mechanism of weak interaction between glutamic acid molecules and CrO 4 2- . This study provides a detailed understanding of the intercalation mechanism involved in the amino acid modification of LDHs. It explains the adsorption mechanism of metal oxo-acid radicals by amino acid-modified LDHs from a theoretical perspective. The findings offer experiments and a theoretical basis for designing targeted adsorbents in the future.

Purpose: To explore the benefits of a recorded maternal voice intervention on weight, recumbent length, head circumference, and heart rate of preterm infants in the neonatal intensive care unit., Methods: A pilot randomised controlled trial was conducted in this study. Preterm infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (N = 109) were recruited and randomly assigned to an intervention or control group. Both groups received routine nursing care, while preterm infants in the intervention group received a recorded maternal voice program of 20 min, twice daily for 21 days. Preterm infants' daily weight, recumbent length, head circumference, and heart rate were collected during the 21-day intervention. Participants' heart rate in the intervention group was also recorded once a day pre-during-after the recorded maternal voice program., Results: Preterm infants in the intervention group showed a significant increase in weight (-75.94, 95% CI -108.04, -43.85, P < 0.001), recumbent length (-0.54, 95% CI -0.76, -0.32, P < 0.001), and head circumference (-0.37, 95%CI -0.56, -0.18, P < 0.001) compared with the control group. Preterm infants in the intervention group also showed significant changes in heart rate pre-during-after the recorded maternal voice program. Biophysical and biochemical cues modulate mammalian cell behavior and phenotype simultaneously. Macrophages, indispensable cells in the innate immune system, respond to external threats such as bacterial infections and implanted devices, undergoing the classical M1 polarization to become a pro-inflammatory phenotype. In the study, lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced M1 polarization was examined using RAW264.7, THP-1, and primary human PBMCs on a family of artificial extracellular matrix (ECM), named colloidal self-assembled patterns (cSAPs). The results showed that cSAPs were biocompatible, which cannot induce M1 or M2 polarization. Interestingly, specific cSAPs (e.g., cSAP3) suppress the level of M1 polarization (i.e., reduced nitric oxide production, down-regulated gene expression of iNOS, IL-6, TNF-α, IL-1β, and TLR4, and reduced proportion of CD11b + CD86 + cells). Transcriptome analysis showed that cell adhesion and cell-ECM interaction participated in the M1 polarization, and the mechano-sensitive genes such as PIEZO1 were down-regulated on the cSAP3. More interestingly, these genes were also down-regulated under LPS stimulation, indicating that cells became insensitive to the LPS. The abovementioned results indicate that the defined physicochemical cues can govern macrophage polarization. This study illustrates a potential surface design at biointerface, which is critical in tissue engineering and materiobiology. The outcome is also inspiring in ECM-mediated immune responses.

Background: People diagnosed with von Willebrand disease (VWD) have reduced quality of life versus the general population, and there is limited evidence of increased rates of anxiety and/or depression among people diagnosed with VWD., Aim: To understand the association between VWD and mental health outcomes., Design and Setting: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) GOLD database (1988-2016)., Methods: People diagnosed with VWD were matched 1:10 to randomly selected people in the database without VWD based on sex, birth year ±2 years, CPRD record start year ±2 years, and general practice attended. Individuals were followed from VWD diagnosis or match date to censoring (first event date, CPRD end date, or death). Treated anxiety and treated depression were identified by a diagnostic Read Code and a prescription for anxiety/depression medication recorded within 90 days of each other, after VWD diagnosis/match date., Results: Treated anxiety was recorded in 89 of 1119 (8.0%) people diagnosed with VWD and 624 of 10,423 (6.0%) without VWD (age- and sex-adjusted incidence rate ratio [IRR], 1.37; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.10-1.71). Treated depression was recorded in 119 of 1083 (11.0%) people diagnosed with VWD and 846 of 9845 (8.6%) without VWD (adjusted IRR, 1.35; 95% CI, 1.11-1.63). Topographical cues on material surfaces are crucial for guiding the behavior of nerve cells and facilitating the repair of peripheral nerve defects. Previously, micron-grooved surfaces have shown great potential in controlling nerve cell alignment for studying the behavior and functions of those cells and peripheral nerve regeneration. However, the effects of smaller-sized topographical cues, such as those in the submicron- and nano-scales, on Schwann cell behavior remain poorly understood. In this study, four different submicron-grooved polystyrene films (800/400, 800/100, 400/400, and 400/100) were fabricated to study the behavior, gene expression, and membrane potential of Schwann cells. The results showed that all submicron-grooved films could guide the cell alignment and cytoskeleton in a groove depth-dependent manner. Cell proliferation and cell cycle assays revealed that there was no significant difference between the submicron groove samples and the flat control. However, the submicron grooves can direct the migration of cells and upregulate the expression of critical genes in axon regeneration and myelination (e.g., MBP and Smad6). Finally, the membrane potential of the Schwann cells was significantly altered on the grooved sample. In conclusion, this study sheds light on the role of submicron-grooved patterns in regulating the behavior and function of Schwann cells, which provides unique insights for the development of implants for peripheral nerve regeneration.

Cell cultures of dispersed cells within hydrogels depict the interaction of the cell-extracellular matrix (ECM) in 3D, while the coculture of different cells within spheroids combines both the effects of cell-cell and cell-ECM interactions. In this study, the cell co-spheroids of human bone mesenchymal stem cells/human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HBMSC/HUVECs) are prepared with the assistance of a nanopattern, named colloidal self-assembled patterns (cSAPs), which is superior to low-adhesion surfaces. A phenol-modified gelatin/hyaluronan (Gel-Ph/HA-Ph) hydrogel is used to encapsulate the multicellular spheroids and the constructs are photo-crosslinked using blue light. The results show that Gel-Ph/HA-Ph hydrogels with a 5%-to-0.3% ratio have the best properties. Cells in HBMSC/HUVEC co-spheroids are more favorable for osteogenic differentiation (Runx2, ALP, Col1a1 and OPN) and vascular network formation (CD31+ cells) compared to HBMSC spheroids. In a subcutaneous nude mouse model, the HBMSC/HUVEC co-spheroids showed better performance than HBMSC spheroids in angiogenesis and the development of blood vessels. Overall, this study paves a new way for using nanopatterns, cell coculturing and hydrogel technology for the generation and application of multicellular spheroids.

Introduction: Although hereditary von Willebrand disease (VWD) is the most common bleeding disorder, its epidemiology is not well understood. A systematic review (PROSPERO CRD42020197674/CRD42021244374) on the epidemiology/burden of illness of VWD was conducted to better understand patients' unmet needs., Methods: Observational studies (published January 1, 2010 to April 14, 2021) were identified in MEDLINE and Embase databases, using free-text keywords and thesaurus terms for VWD and outcomes of interest. Pragmatic web-based searches of the gray literature, including conference abstracts, were performed, and reference lists of retained publications were manually searched for additional sources. Case reports and clinical trials (phase 1-3) were excluded. Outcomes of interest were incidence, prevalence, mortality, patient characteristics, burden of illness, and therapeutic management/treatments currently used for VWD., Results: Of the 3095 identified sources, 168 were included in this systematic review. Reported VWD prevalence (22 sources) ranged from 108.9 to 2200 per 100,000 in population-based studies and from 0.3 to 16.5 per 100,000 in referral-based studies. Reported times between first symptom onset and diagnosis (two sources; mean 669 days; median 3 years) highlighted gaps in timely VWD diagnosis. Bleeding events reported in 72-94% of the patients with VWD (all types; 27 sources) were mostly mucocutaneous including epistaxis, menorrhagia, and oral/gum bleeding. Due to the cross phase modulation (XPM) effect, in long-haul high-speed dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) coherent systems, using a low-speed on-off-keying (OOK) format optical supervisory channel (OSC) will introduce extra nonlinear phase noise, which restricts the transmission distance. In this paper, we propose a simple OSC coding method to mitigate the OSC-induced nonlinear phase noise. According to the split-step solution of the Manakov equation, we up-convert the baseband of the OSC signal out of the pass-band of the walk-off term to reduce the spectrum density of XPM phase noise. Experimental results show that the optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR) budget on the 400 G channel of 1280-km transmission is improved by 0.96 dB, which achieves almost the same performance with the no OSC case.

Identifying potential sources of soil potentially toxic elements (PTEs) and developing source-oriented health risk assessments in typical mining cities are key for pollution prevention and risk management. To this end, a case study was conducted to explore the pollution characteristics, potential sources, and human health risks of PTEs in Daye City, China. Indices, including the pollution factor (PF), pollution load index (PLI), and geo-accumulation index (I geo ), were applied to assess PTE pollution. Cd had the highest value among the detected PTEs, and 82.93% of the sampling sites had moderate pollution levels, with the highest mean I geo value for Cd (2.30). Four potential sources were determined. Cr and Ni originated mainly from natural sources. Zn (91.5%) was exclusively and then Cd (33.1%) was moderately derived from industrial activities. The mixed source of various mineral exploitation smelting, and coal-fired traffic emissions leaded to the accumulation of As, Cd, and Pb. Cu was associated with Cu-related mining and smelting activities. The probabilistic health risk assessment indicated that the non-carcinogenic risks for populations were negligible. Background: Understanding the temporal trends in the epidemiology of colorectal cancer (CRC) and early-onset CRC (EOCRC) in China is essential for policymakers to develop appropriate strategies to reduce the CRC burden., Methods: The prevalence, incidence, mortality, years of life lived with disability (YLDs), years of life lost (YLLs), and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of CRC were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study 2019. The incidence and mortality of CRC over the next 25 years were predicted., Results: From 1990 to 2019, the prevalence, incidence, and mortality of total CRC and EOCRC significantly increased in males, with milder trends in females. In 2019, the number of people living with CRC (or EOCRC) in China was approximately 3.4 (0.59) million, which was over seven (five) times higher than that in 1990. The DALYs, YLDs, and YLLs moderately increased from 1990 to 2019 in both sexes. The age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) for females has shown a stable trend in total CRC, and a downward trend in EOCRC since 2000. While the ASMR for males showed increasing trends in total CRC and EOCRC. In 2019, the highest incidence, prevalence, YLDs, YLLs, and DALYs were all observed in the 65 to 69 age group, while the highest mortality was in the 70 to 74. By 2044, the incidence and deaths of CRC are expected to reach 1310 thousand and 484 thousand, respectively. In the adsorption process of functionalized layered double hydroxide (LDH) to target pollutants it, is essential to investigate the role of functional groups. In this work, 2‑mercaptoethane sulfonic acid (MS) was used as an intercalation modifier to prepare functionalized NiFe-LDH by solvothermal method. The interfacial interaction between the functional groups and the NiFe-LDH surface was studied via molecular dynamics simulation. During the intercalation process, the more negatively charged sulfonic acid group tends to self-assemble electrostatically with the LDH laminate, while the sulfhydryl group is involved in complexing heavy metal ions. The adsorption experiments showed that the adsorption performance of the adsorbent for the three ions of Cd 2+ , Mn 2+ , and Co 2+ at 298.15 K was 266.16 mg/g, 175.60 mg/g, and 106.56 mg/g, respectively, which were 10 times, 8.7 times, and 4.9 times higher than that of unmodified NiFe-LDH. Pholiota adiposa is an important edible and medicinal mushroom with high nutritional and medicinal effects. The fruiting body of wild fungi collected from Mudanjiang City, Heilongjiang Province, was identified by morphological description and molecular identification, the biological characteristics and domestication of the fungus was determined by single factor and orthogonal tests. The wild strain isolated was determined to be Ph. adiposa based on morphological characteristics, sequence alignment between ITS and nLSU, and phylogenetic relationship analysis. The single factor results revealed that the optimal carbon source, nitrogen source, culture temperature, and pH for the mycelia growth of Ph. adiposa were glucose, yeast paste, 25°C, and pH 6.5-7.0, respectively. Orthogonal test showed that the optimal formula for mycelia culture was fructose 20 g/L, yeast extract 6 g/L, KH2PO4 1 g/L and MgSO4 2.5 g/L. The highest single bag yield of the fruiting body of Ph. adiposa was 24.96 g in the culture medium formula of sawdust (20%), wheat bran (10%), soybean powder (1%), and quicklime powder (1%). The results will provide basic information for the protection, utilization and domestication of the resources of Ph. adiposa.

Direct neuronal reprogramming of somatic cells into induced neurons (iNs) has been recently established as a promising approach to generating neuron cells. Previous studies have reported that the biophysical cues of the in vitro microenvironment are potent modulators in the cell fate decision; thus, the present study explores the effects of a customized pattern (named colloidal self-assembled patterns, cSAPs) on iN generation from human fibroblasts using small molecules. The result revealed that the cSAP, composed of binary particles in a hexagonal-close-packed (hcp) geometry, is capable of improving neuronal reprogramming efficiency and steering the ratio of the iN subtypes. Cells exhibited distinct cell morphology, upregulated cell adhesion markers (i.e., SDC1 and ITGAV), enriched signaling pathways (i.e., Hippo and Wnt), and chromatin remodeling on the cSAP compared to those on the control substrates. The result also showed that the iN subtype specification on cSAP was surface-dependent; therefore, the defined physicochemical cue from each cSAP is exclusive. Our findings show that direct cell reprogramming can be manipulated through specific biophysical cues on the artificial matrix, which is significant in cell transdifferentiation and lineage conversion.

Water hypoxia (DO < 2 mg/L) is a growing global environmental concern that has the potential to significantly influence not only the aquatic ecosystem but also the benthic sedimentary ecosystem. The Changjiang River Estuary hypoxia, classified as one of the world's largest seasonal hypoxic water basins, has been reported to be expanding rapidly in recent decades. However, the microbial community dynamics and responses to this water hypoxia are still unclear. In this study, we examined the abundance, community composition, and distribution of sedimentary archaea, one important component of microbial communities in the Changjiang River Estuary and the East China Sea (ECS). Our results indicated that Thaumarchaeota and Bathyarchaeota were predominant archaeal groups in these research areas, with their 16S rRNA gene abundance ranged from 8.55 × 10 6 to 7.51 × 10 8 and 3.18 × 10 5 to 1.11 × 10 8 copies/g, respectively. The sedimentary archaeal community was mainly influenced by DO, together with the concentration of ammonium, nitrate, and sulfide. In addition, distinct differences in the archaeal community's composition, abundance, and driving factors were discovered between samples from hypoxia and non-hypoxia stations. Furtherly, microbial networks suggest various microbes leading the different activities in hypoxic and normoxic environments. Bathyarchaeota and Thermoprofundales were "key stone" archaeal members of the low-DO network, whereas Thaumarchaeota constituted a significant component of the high-DO network. Our results provide a clear picture of the sedimentary archaeal community in coastal hypoxia zones and indicates potential distinctions of archaea in hypoxia and non-hypoxia environments, including ecological niches and metabolic functions. IMPORTANCE In this study, the sedimentary archaeal community composition and abundance were detailed revealed and quantified based on 16S rRNA genes off the Changjiang River Estuary. We found that the community composition was distinct between hypoxia and non-hypoxia regions, while Thaumarchaeota and Bathyarchaeota dominated in non-hypoxia and hypoxia samples, respectively. In hypoxia regions, the sedimentary archaea were mainly affected by salinity, ammonium, and nitrate, whereas total organic carbon, total nitrogen, and sulfide were major influencing factors in non-hypoxia regions. The distinct microbial network may suggest the niche difference of archaeal community under various oxygen level.

WRKY transcription factors (TF) have been identified in many plant species and play critical roles in multiple stages of growth and development and under various stress conditions. As one of the most popular vegetable crops, asparagus lettuce has important medicinal and nutritional value. However, study of WRKY TFs family in asparagus lettuce is limited. With the lettuce ( Lactuca sativa L.) genome publication, we identified 76 WRKY TFs and analyzed structural characteristics, phylogenetic relationships, chromosomal distribution, interaction network, and expression profiles. The 76 LsWRKY TFs were phylogenetically classified as Groups I, II (IIa-IIe), and III. Cis element analysis revealed complex regulatory relationships of LsWRKY genes in response to different biological progresses. Interaction network analysis indicated that LsWRKY TFs could interact with other proteins, such as SIB (sigma factor binding protein), WRKY TFs, and MPK. The WRKYIII subfamily genes showed different expression patterns during the progress of asparagus lettuce stem enlargement. According to qRT-PCR analysis, abiotic stresses (drought, salt, low temperature, and high temperature) and phytohormone treatment could induce specific LsWRKYIII gene expression. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is common among people living with HIV. HIV and HCV coinfected patients have higher overall mortality rates compared with HIV mono-infected patients. With its high cure rate of HCV infection, direct-acting antiviral (DAA) treatment provides an opportunity to improve the survival of the HIV/HCV coinfected population. The objective of this study is to investigate the association between DAA treatment and all-cause mortality among HIV/HCV coinfected people. The study included 7103 Medicare beneficiaries in the United States who were infected with both HIV and HCV between 2014 and 2017. Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to estimate adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) of death for patients with and without DAA treatment while controlling for patient characteristics. During the study period, 1675 patients initiated DAA treatment (23.6%). The adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) of all-cause mortality between patients with and without DAA treatment was 0.37 (95% CI, 0.29-0.48), regardless of cirrhosis status. DAA treatment was associated with a smaller reduction in all-cause mortality for females (aHR, 0.50 [95% CI, 0.30-0.85]) compared with males (aHR, 0.34 [95% CI, 0.25-0.46]). DAA treatment was associated with improved survival among all HIV/HCV coinfected patients regardless of sex or HCV disease progression.

Objective: To understand the impact of von Willebrand disease (VWD) on women's health, a retrospective cohort study was conducted using UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) GOLD database and Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) Admitted Patient Care data from 1988 to 2016. Materials and Methods: Hysterectomy and heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) events were identified by recorded disease/clinical codes and compared in women with and without VWD (matched 1:10 by birth and CPRD record start years [±2 years], and general practice attended). Incidence rates and incidence rate ratios (IRR) were calculated; risks were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method. Results: HMB was recorded after cohort entry in 388 of 1,335 women (29.1%) with VWD and 1,524 of 12,463 women (12.2%) without VWD. The cumulative incidence of HMB was higher in women with versus without VWD across all ages ( p  < 0.0001), and irrespective of prior HMB status ( p  < 0.001). Women with VWD were more likely to have HMB compared with women without VWD; IRR adjusted for age and prior HMB status was 2.74 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.44-3.07). Hysterectomy was recorded in 88 of 1,374 women (6.4%) with VWD and 320 of 12,791 women (2.5%) without VWD. The cumulative incidence of hysterectomy was higher for women with versus without VWD ( p  < 0.0001), and highest among women aged ≥30 years at cohort entry. Women with VWD aged 30 - 39 years were more likely to undergo hysterectomy than women without VWD; IRR adjusted for prior HMB was 3.58 (95% CI: 2.36 - 5.44). Conclusions: These findings highlight the substantial impact of VWD on women's health.

Circadian rhythms are maintained by a cell-autonomous, transcriptional-translational feedback loop known as the molecular clock. While previous research suggests a role of the molecular clock in regulating skeletal muscle structure and function, no mechanisms have connected the molecular clock to sarcomere filaments. Utilizing inducible, skeletal muscle specific, Bmal1 knockout (iMS Bmal1 -/- ) mice, we showed that knocking out skeletal muscle clock function alters titin isoform expression using RNAseq, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, and sodium dodecyl sulfate-vertical agarose gel electrophoresis. This alteration in titin's spring length resulted in sarcomere length heterogeneity. We demonstrate the direct link between altered titin splicing and sarcomere length in vitro using U7 snRNPs that truncate the region of titin altered in iMS Bmal1 -/- muscle. We identified a mechanism whereby the skeletal muscle clock regulates titin isoform expression through transcriptional regulation of Rbm20 , a potent splicing regulator of titin. Lastly, we used an environmental model of circadian rhythm disruption and identified significant downregulation of Rbm20 expression. Our findings demonstrate the importance of the skeletal muscle circadian clock in maintaining titin isoform through regulation of RBM20 expression. Polydopamine (PDA) is a biocompatible cell-adhesive polymer with versatile applications in biomedical devices. Previous studies have shown that PDA coating could improve cell adhesion and differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs). However, there is still a knowledge gap in the effect of PDA-mediated protein adsorption on the epigenetic status of MSCs. This work used gelatin-coated cell culture surfaces with and without PDA underlayer (Gel and PDA-Gel) to culture and differentiate primary human adipose-derived stem cells (hASCs). The properties of these two substrates were significantly different, which, in combination with a variation in extracellular matrix (ECM) protein bioactivity, regulated cell adhesion and migration. hASCs reduced focal adhesions by downregulating the expression of integrins such as αV, α1, α2, and β1 on the PDA-Gel compared to the Gel substrate. Interestingly, the ratio of H3K27me3 to H3K27me3+H3K4me3 was decreased, but this only occurred for upregulation of AGG and BMP4 genes during chondrogenic differentiation. This result implies that the PDA-Gel surface positively affects the chondrogenic, but not adipogenic and osteogenic, differentiation. In conclusion, for the first time, this study demonstrates the sequential effects of PDA coating on the biophysical property of adsorbed protein and then focal adhesions and differentiation of hMSCs through epigenetic regulation. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in soil is a key factor affecting the bioavailability of heavy metals, but very few studies have focused on the role of DOM in the use of soil amendments to mitigate heavy metal accumulation in crops. Here, eleven materials were added to cadmium (Cd)-contaminated paddy soil in greenhouse pot trials; rice was grown and harvested, the chemodiversity of post-harvest soil DOM was characterized using Fourier-Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry, and the specific associations between soil DOM traits and water-extractable soil Cd concentration were identified at the molecular level. The results showed that the endogenous release caused by altering soil pH had a greater effect on soil DOM concentration than did the exogenous chemical input due to the application of organic amendments, which in turn contributed to the chemodiversity of DOM. After one season of rice cultivation, soil DOM molecules were mainly dominated by relatively low molecular weight heteroatom-free lignins. C/N, C/H ratios of organic materials influenced DOM molecular fingerprint patterns, and soil pH and redox potential were the main driving forces affecting the chemodiversity of DOM. Furthermore, the low molecular weight, high saturation, low aromaticity, and heteroatom-free DOM molecules are more likely to dissolve Cd from the soil solid phase, thus increasing the potential risk of Cd to the environment. Studying the chemical composition and characteristic differences of soil dissolved organic matter (DOM) is significant for understanding the mechanism of Cd immobilization by soil amendments. Soil amendments have been widely applied to contaminated farmlands to reduce the accumulation of heavy metals in crops, but the spectral characteristics of DOM in soils under amendment regulation have rarely been studied. Typical Cd-contaminated paddy soil from South China was collected, three categories of amendments (organic-based, inorganic-based, and lime-based, a total of 11 types) were applied, rice planting pot trials were done, and the effects of different amendments on soil DOM were investigated. The spectral characteristics of rhizosphere soil DOM under the regulation of different amendments were comparatively analyzed using UV-Vis spectroscopy, 3D fluorescence spectroscopy, and parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC). The results showed that the lime-based amendments increased the soil pH and promoted the dissolution of organic matter from the soil solid phase, resulting in a significant increase in soil DOM content. Compared with that of the control, organic-based amendments increased the relative molecular weight and recent autochthonous origin contribution of soil DOM, inorganic-based amendments increased the aromatic content and hydrophobic components of soil DOM, and lime-based amendments increased the chromogenic components and the degree of humification of soil DOM. Four fluorescence components, C1 (255/465), C2 (325/400), C3 (275/390), and C4 (240/460), were identified using PARAFAC and verified with the OpenFluor database, all of which were humic-like. Two types of spectra corroborated with each other, indicating that soil DOM dominated by humus-like matter originated from terrestrial source input. The correlation analysis showed that the fluorescent component C4 of soil DOM could be used to predict Cd accumulation in brown rice in the red limestone soil-rice system. These results will provide a reference for the selection of the appropriate soil amendments.

Cadmium (Cd) pollution in mining areas is the most important challenge for soil environment management in China. Assessing the actual Cd pollution risk in various mining areas and identifying the core areas requiring supervision can provide a basis for government departments and industries to carry out detailed further investigations in key areas. In this study, we collated published data on metal mine circumjacent soil contaminated by Cd in China from 2002 to 2020 to conduct a comprehensive study on soil cadmium pollution and ecological and health risks in mining areas. The temporal and spatial variations of Cd concentrations and the pollution source were investigated. Results indicated that the Cd concentration in soil was strongly associated with the types of mining area. The Cd pollution in the circumjacent soil of lead-zinc and tungsten mines with high heavy metal pollution discharging coefficient was more serious than the soil around other mines. Identification of temporal and spatial variations for soil Cd in China indicated that the high Cd concentrations were found in the central, southern, and southwestern regions of China, and the distribution of mining activities in these regions are relatively concentrated. Meanwhile, a temporal turning point in the mean soil Cd concentration occurred in these regions in 2012, which indicated that the heavy metal control management policy implemented by the government was effective. The ecological risk of soil Cd pollution around mining areas was moderate to high. Health risk assessment showed that some regions adjacent mining areas had a high non-carcinogenic risk, notably, lead-zinc and tungsten mining areas were more serious. Supervision should focus on reducing ecological risks and protecting the safety of agricultural products rather than concentrating on health risks. Severe water eutrophication due to large releases of phosphorus has become a worldwide environmental problem. Adsorption active sites is less of traditional adsorbents in the phosphorus removal process resulting in low removal efficiency, so the new high-efficiency phosphorus removal adsorbents become an effective way to solve the problem. In this work, quercetin modified MnFe layered double hydrotalcite three-dimensional composites structures encapsulated by lanthanum (La(III)) nanoparticles (QLa@MnFe-LDH) were successfully prepared by a classical hydrothermal method. The results of the adsorption experiments show that La(III) nanosphere-encapsulated MnFe-LDH provides a more adequate binding site for phosphate adsorption. The adsorption performance of QLa@MnFe-LDH for phosphate was outstanding, the maximum adsorption capacity was 346.5 mg/g at 298.15 K, which was 300 % higher than that of MnFe-LDH. Moreover, QLa@MnFe-LDH retained its high adsorption capacity (>315.5 mg/g) over a wide range of pH (4.0 ∼ 7.0). The active sites of the reactions were predicted by Multiwfn and Visual Molecular Dynamics (VMD), and novel visualization studies of weak interactions were applied to theoretical studies. The modified MnFe-LDH encapsulated by La nanospheres has a strong adsorption capacity for phosphate adsorption.
