Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of using different types of metallic and non-metallic telescopic crown attachment materials on wear resistance and surface tomography changes in implant-retained mandibular overdentures., Materials and Methods: Completely edentulous mandibular epoxy models were fabricated, in which two implants were placed in the canine region and retained to the implants with three different material combinations used for the construction of telescopic attachments. Thirty-three identical mandibular overdentures were fabricated using the conventional standardized technique. The study groups were divided into three categories according to the material used for the construction of the secondary copings. The primary copings in all the study groups were constructed of PEEK, while the secondary coping in group I was PEEK, group II was ZrO 2 and CoCr for group III. Primary copings were cemented on a ready-made abutment. Secondary copings were placed over the primary copings in the desired path of insertion, then picked up into the intaglio surface of the overdentures. A cyclic loading machine was used to apply repeated insertion-removal cycles simulating nearly 10 years of clinical use. Stereomicroscope with a built-in camera was used to monitor the reduction in width of the primary copings to evaluate the wear resistance of each material combination., Results: There was highly statistically significant difference between the study groups after the application of 1.000, 5.000 and 10.000 cycles. The highest level of wear resistance was recorded for the PEEK/PEEK combination, whereas PEEK/ZrO 2 and PEEK/CoCr showed no significant differences., Conclusions: Implant retained overdenture with PEEK-PEEK telescopic crown attachment is associated with the highest wear resistance among all the study groups. PEEK-PEEK combination may be the treatment of choice for fabrication of telescopic attachment in implant retained overdenture as it provides better resistance to wear. It offers the advantages for geriatric patients as it decreases the possibility for repeated repair and replacement of attachment, increase long-term patient satisfaction and shelf life of prosthesis., (© 2024. Background: A variety of firing protocols are available for the IPS e.max lithium disilicate (LD) and can be used for new, 'advanced' LD (ALD). However, the impact of firing protocols on the optical properties of ALD is still unknown., Objectives: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the color difference (ΔE00), the translucency parameter (TP00) and the whiteness index for dentistry (WID) for both LD glass ceramics after the processes of firing/glazing., Material and Methods: Fifty disk-shaped specimens, with a diameter of 10 mm and a thickness of 1.2 mm, were fabricated from IPS e.max CAD (LD; Ivoclar) and another 50 from CEREC Tessera™ (ALD; Dentsply Sirona). The specimens from each group were further divided into 5 subgroups (n = 10) according to the firing/glazing protocol applied: crystallization (c); one-step crystallization and glazing (cg); crystallization and refiring (c-r); two-step crystallization and glazing (c-g); or long-firing crystallization (lfc). The ΔE00, TP00 and WID were assessed. The statistical analysis of ΔE00 was performed using the one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's post hoc test, while TP00 and WID were analyzed with the two-way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test at a statistical significance level of 0.05. The cg groups were designated as the reference., Results: The ANOVA showed that the firing procedures had no effect on ΔE00, TP00 and WID in the case of LD. In addition, LD exhibited greater translucency and brightness as compared to ALD. For ALD, all color changes observed in relation to the reference firing protocol were clinically unacceptable. The ALD specimens which underwent 1 standard firing cycle showed higher TP00 and WID values than other ALD groups., Conclusions: The choice of the firing protocol has no impact on the color, TP00 or WID of LD. Additionally, LD presents higher WID values than ALD, irrespective of the firing protocol used. Alternative firing protocols result in clinically unacceptable color variations when compared to the manufacturer-recommended protocol for ALD. Advanced LD is more sensitive to different firing protocols with regard to its optical properties, which makes the workflow less predictable in comparison with LD.

Purpose: To assess the repeatability of various color-measuring mobile phone applications (MPAs) on dental materials in clinically relevant shades in 1-mm thickness., Materials and Methods: A benchtop spectrophotometer was used as a reference instrument. Seven MPAs were used: Color Analysis, Color Analyzer-Iro Shirabe, Color Grab, and Colorimeter from Android, and Color Analyzer-Iro Shirabe, ColorMeter RGB, and Optishade from iOS. Color measurements were performed on 1-mm thickness slices of CAD-CAM materials, Vita Enamic shades 1M2, 2M2, 3M2, 4M2, and Vitablocs Mark II shades A1C, A2C, A3C, A4C (n = 10, for a total 80 specimens). The specimens were measured at three time periods, Day 0, Day 1, and Day 7, and three measurements were made on each day, to mimic short-, medium-, and long-term repeatability. The color differences were analyzed using the CIEDE2000 formula, with the corresponding color difference (ΔE 00 ), and mean color difference from the mean (MCDM 00 ). One-way ANOVA, Repeated measures ANOVA, and Paired sample t-tests were used for statistical analysis., Results: Optishade from iOS showed the lowest mean color difference among the MPAs (ΔE 00  = 0.2 (SD 0.1), 0.3 (SD 0.2), and 0.2 (SD 0.1) at Day 0, 1, and 7, respectively, and ΔE 00  = 0.5 (SD 0.3) for all three periods Days 0-1, 0-7, and 1-7). Material-dependent variations in the repeatability of color measurements were observed., Conclusion: There was a statistically significant difference among color measurements using MPAs and a spectrophotometer, among the MPAs, and materials. The spectrophotometer exhibited the highest repeatability across the tested time periods. Purpose: The present study evaluated the mechanical, surface, and optical properties of 3D-printed resins for removable prostheses reinforced by the addition of aramid fibers., Materials and Methods: According to ISO 20795-1:2013 standards, specimens were printed using a digital light processing 3D printer and divided into two groups (n = 06/group): 3D-printed resin for denture base as the control group, and a group with the same 3D-printed resin in addition of 5% aramid fibers as the experimental group. Red aramid fibers were chosen for aesthetic characterization. The specimens were evaluated for their mechanical properties, such as elastic modulus (GPa), flexural strength (MPa), and superficial properties by their surface microhardness (KHN), surface roughness (μm), and surface free energy (mJ/m 2 ). Optical properties were evaluated by the color difference (∆E00) between groups. The statistical test chosen after the exploratory analysis of the data was One-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's HSD (α = 0.05)., Results: The results showed statistical differences in elastic modulus (p < 0.0001), flexural strength (p < 0.0001), surface free energy polar variable (p = 0.0322), total surface free energy (p = 0.0344), with higher values for the experimental. Surface hardness and surface roughness showed no statistical difference (p ≥ 0.05). The color difference (∆E00) obtained through the CIEDE2000 calculus was below the perceptibility threshold (≤1.1)., Conclusion: Adding aramid fibers to 3D-printed resin for denture bases resulted in better mechanical properties, without major alterations in surface properties. Objective: To evaluate the color change (ΔE) and fluorescence (FL) of resin composites after the consumption of beverages., Materials and Methods: One hundred and sixty disc-shaped specimens (6 × 2 mm) of Filtek Z350 XT (FZX) and Forma (FOR) resin composites were randomized for use in devices by five volunteers who ingested 100 ml daily of red wine (RW), beer (BE), energy drink (ED) and water (WT) over 15 days. The data were collected from digital photographs and analyzed using the CIE-Lab and RGB scales to obtain ΔE and FL and statistics via two-way ANOVA (for ΔE) and ANOVA for repeated measures (for FL), α = 0.05., Results: The highest ΔE values were obtained for FZX and FOR in the RW (ΔE = 10.5 for FZX and ΔE = 9.90 for FOR) and BE (ΔE = 6.3 for FZX and ΔE = 6.1 for FOR) drinks. For FL, there were different levels of change between the composites, with a much more significant reduction in FL intensity with RW., Conclusion: Beverages have the potential to stain the composites evaluated, especially alcoholic beverages., Clinical Significance: Before carrying out an esthetic treatment with resin composites, it is ideal to investigate the types of drinks consumed by patients, for greater predictability of treatment., (© 2024. Achieving color match between natural teeth and restorative materials is crucial in dentistry. Factors such as the light source, brightness, and opacity influence tooth color, determined by light absorption and scattering within the material. Advances in CAD/CAM systems have enhanced prosthodontic treatments, particularly with new temporary materials, but data on their color stability and masking ability remains limited. However, data on the color stability and masking ability of these CAD/CAM materials is limited. Telio ® CAD-Temp and VITA CAD-Temp ® blocks were cut into slices and polished. Composite resin specimens were prepared using a custom-designed metal resin former and light-cured. Samples were paired randomly and assigned to experimental groups based on base type and thickness ( n = 30). Samples were stored in a controlled environment for 24 h before color evaluation using an EasyShade ® V spectrophotometer. Color difference (Δ E ) was calculated using L *, a *, and b * values. Statistical analyses included the Shapiro-Wilk test, Levene's test, and three-way ANOVA, with post-hoc comparisons using the Bonferroni method (α = 0.05). Δ E was classified according to perceptibility (PT = 1.2) and acceptability (AT = 2.7) values.

Purpose: This German S3 clinical practice guideline offers evidence-based recommendations for the use of composite materials in direct restorations of permanent teeth. Outcomes considered were the survival rates and restoration quality and process quality of the manufacturing process. Part 1 of this two-part presentation deals with the indication classes., Materials and Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted by two methodologists using MEDLINE and the Cochrane Library via the OVID platform, including studies up to December 2021. Six PICO questions were developed to guide the search. Recommendations were formulated by a panel of dental professionals from 20 national societies and organizations based on the collected evidence., Results: Composite materials are a viable option for the direct restoration of cavity Classes I-V and may also be used for restorations with cusp replacement, and tooth shape corrections. In the posterior region, direct composite restorations should be preferred over indirect composite inlays. For Class V restorations, composite materials can be used if adequate contamination control and adhesive technique are ensured., Conclusion: The guideline is the first to provide comprehensive evidence on the use of direct composite materials. However, further long-term clinical studies with comparators such as (modified) glass-ionomer cements are necessary. Regular updates will detail the future scope and limitations of direct composite restorations.

The purpose of this study was to introduce a novel and simple method of evaluating the crystal length and crystalline content of lithium disilicate dental ceramics using images obtained from scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and analyzed with ImageJ (NIH) processing software. Three evaluators with varying experience levels assessed the average crystal length and percentage of crystalline content in four commercial lithium disilicate reinforced glass ceramic materials: IPS e.max (Ivoclar Vivadent), Rosetta SM (Hass), T-Lithium (Talmax), and IRIS CAD (Tianjin). The specimens, prepared from partially crystallized CAD/CAM blocks (3.0 mm 3 ), were fully crystallized and treated with 5% hydrofluoric acid for 20 s prior to SEM analysis. After acquiring the SEM images, ImageJ software was used to evaluate the average crystal length and crystalline content on the surface of the different ceramics. An inter-operator agreement was observed (ICC/p = 0.724), indicating that assessments by the various operators were similar across all ceramic materials tested (p < 0.001). When crystal length and crystalline content were compared, IRIS CAD exhibited significant differences compared to the other materials (p < 0.001), showing a less dense crystalline matrix based on the average length of crystals and the percentage of crystals per unit area. The use of this software facilitated the evaluation of crystalline content and average crystal lengths in dental ceramics using SEM images, and demonstrated very low variability among different operators. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: The described method, using ImageJ open-source software, provides precise and reliable measurements of crystal length and crystalline content in lithium disilicate ceramics, with high inter-operator agreement. The proposed method identified higher crystalline content in IPS e.max CAD compared to Rosetta SM CAD and T-lithium CAD ceramics, while IRIS CAD exhibited significantly lower crystalline content and larger average crystal length. Objective: The present paper aims to demonstrate the incorporation of the double monolithic protocol (DMP) into a chairside digital workflow to reproduce the fluorescence properties of natural teeth with chairside monolithic restorations when exposed to different light sources., Clinical Considerations: A female patient reporting dissatisfaction with her upper anterior teeth was rehabilitated using seven veneers and a three-element bridge. The DMP was applied to the bridge, which consisted of a primary lithium disilicate framework to which leucite-reinforced glass ceramic veneers were cemented. The fluorescence of the different substrates and ceramic restorations was evaluated throughout the rehabilitation process, under 365 and 405 nm light., Conclusions: The DMP allows chairside procedures to be optimized by achieving predictable, mechanically resistant, and esthetic restorations., Clinical Significance: The DMP is a new chairside solution for developing ceramic restorations with optimal esthetics and combined mechanical properties, eliminating the need for sintering or glazing procedures., (© 2024 The Author(s). 3D printing of materials which combine fracture toughness, high modulus and high strength is quite challenging. Most commercially available 3D printing resins contain a mixture of multifunctional (meth)acrylates. The resulting 3D printed materials are therefore brittle and not adapted for the preparation of denture bases. For this reason, this article focuses on toughening by incorporation of triblock copolymers in methacrylate-based materials. In a first step, three urethane dimethacrylates with various alkyl spacer length were synthesized in a one-pot two-step synthesis. Each monomer was combined with 2-phenoxyethyl methacrylate as a monofunctional monomer and a polycaprolactone-polydimethylsiloxane-polycaprolactone triblock copolymer was added as toughener. The formation of nanostructures via self-assembly was proven by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The addition of the triblock copolymer resulted in a strong increase in fracture toughness for all mixtures. The nature of the urethane dimethacrylate had a significant impact on fracture toughness and flexural strength and modulus of the cured materials. Most promising systems were also investigated via dynamic fatigue propagation da/dN measurements, confirming that the toughening also works under dynamic load. By carefully selecting the length of the urethane dimethacrylate spacer and the amount of block copolymer, materials with the desired physical properties could be efficiently formulated. This study aimed to investigate the mechanical behavior of resin composites and hybrid glass ionomer cement in class I adhesive dental restorations under loading and shrinkage conditions. Three CAD models of a mandibular first molar with class I cavities were created and restored with different techniques: a bi-layer of Equia Forte HT with Filtek One Bulk Fill Restorative composite (model A), a single layer of adhesive and Filtek One Bulk Fill Restorative (model B), and a single layer of Equia forte HT (model C). Each model was exported to computer-aided engineering software, and 3D finite element models were created. Models A and B exhibited a similar pattern of stress distribution along the enamel-restoration interface, with stress peaks of 12.5 MPa and 14 MPa observed in the enamel tissue. The sound tooth, B, and C models showed a similar trend along the interface between dentine and restoration. A stress peak of about 0.5 MPa was detected in the enamel of both the sound tooth and B models. Model C showed a reduced stress peak of about 1.2 MPa. A significant stress reduction in 4 mm deep class I cavities in lower molars was observed in models where non-shrinking dental filling materials, like the hybrid glass ionomer cement used in model C, were applied. Stress reduction was also achieved in model A, which employed a bi-layer technique with a shrinking polymeric filling material (bulk resin composite). Model C's performance closely resembled that of a sound tooth.

Background: The accuracy of intraoral scanning is critical for computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing workflows in dentistry. However, data regarding the scanning accuracy of various adjacent restorative materials and intraoral scanners are lacking. This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the effect of adjacent restorative material type and CEREC's intraoral scanners on the accuracy of intraoral digital impressions for inlay cavities., Methods: The artificial tooth was prepared with an occlusal cavity depth of 2 mm, a proximal box width at the gingival floor of 1.5 mm, and an equi-gingival margin extended disto-occlusally at the transition line angle on both the lingual and buccal sides for an inlay restoration. The adjacent teeth were veneered with crowns made of gold and zirconia, and an artificial tooth (resin) was utilized as the control group. The inlay cavity and adjacent teeth (Gold, Zirconia, and resin) were scanned 10 times using Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics (CEREC) Primescan (PS), Omnicam (OC), and Bluecam (BC). A reference scan was obtained using a laboratory scanner (3-shape E3). Scanning was performed according to the manufacturer's instructions, including powder application for the BC group. Standard tesselation language files were analyzed using a three-dimensional analysis software program. Experimental data were analyzed using a two-way analysis of variance and the Tukey's post-hoc comparison test., Results: The restorative materials of the adjacent teeth significantly affected the accuracy of the intraoral digital impressions (p < .05). The zirconia group exhibited the highest trueness deviation, followed by the resin and gold groups, with each demonstrating a statistically significant difference (p < .05). The resin group demonstrated the highest maximum positive deviation and deviation in precision. Gold exhibited the lowest average deviation value for trueness compared with those of the other adjacent restorative materials. Intraoral scanner type significantly influenced the trueness and precision of the scan data (p < .05). The average deviation of trueness according to the intraoral scanner type increased in the following order: BC > PS > OC. The average deviation in precision increased in the following order: PS>OC>BC (p < .05)., Conclusion: The restorative materials of the adjacent tooth and the type of intraoral scanner affect the accuracy of the intraoral digital impression. The trueness of the digital images of the BC group, obtained by spraying the powder, was comparable to that of the PS group. Among the adjacent restorative materials, zirconia exhibited the lowest trueness. In contrast, PS demonstrated the highest precision among the intraoral scanners, while resin displayed the lowest precision among the adjacent restorative materials., (© 2024. The Author(s).)

This study aimed to examine the impact of substrates, ceramic shades, and brands on the color and masking ability of highly translucent monolithic zirconia (HTMZ) using CIELab and CIEΔE2000 metrics. A total of 156 1-mm thick HTMZ disks in shades A1, A2, and A3 were produced using Dental Direkt and Kerox zirconia brands. Four 3-mm thick substrates (nickel-chromium alloy, non-precious gold alloy (NPG), zirconia shade A2, and resin composite shade A2) were prepared. HTMZ disks were overlaid on these substrates, and color measurements were taken with a spectrophotometer. Color differences (ΔE) were analyzed using CIELab and CIEΔE2000 formulas. The influence of brand, shade, substrate, and their interactions on ΔE values was assessed with a General Linear Model (GLM) and LSD pairwise comparison test. Spearman's correlation test examined the relationship between CIELab and CIEΔE2000 values. Results indicated that ΔEab was significantly influenced by substrate type and shade, while ΔE2000 was also affected by the ceramic brand. Mean color differences across ceramic-substrate groups were within clinically acceptable and perceptible ranges (clinically perceptible: ∆Eab ≥ 1.3 and ∆E2000 ≥ 0.8; clinically acceptable: 0.8 < ∆E2000 ≤ 1.8 and 1.3 < ∆Eab ≤ 2.7), except for NPG, which had ΔE values exceeding the perceptible range (ΔE2000: 1.1 ± 0.11 to 1.8 ± 0.31; ΔEab: 1.61 ± 0.15 to 2.16 ± 0.36). A significant correlation (r = 0.974, P < 0.001) was found between ΔEab and ΔE2000. Various ceramic brands and shades led to notable ΔE variations, yet average color differences within all ceramic-substrate groups remained clinically acceptable. Purpose: This study investigated the fracture resistance and failure modes of custom-fabricated post- and core dental restorations using various CAD/CAM materials., Materials and Methods: Seventy-five mandibular second premolars were allocated to five groups (n = 15) and prepared for standardized post and core restorations. The groups included a control group comprising cast metal and four CAD/CAM materials: Vita Enamic, Shofu HC, Trilor, and PEKK. Fracture resistance was assessed using a compressive force at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min until failure occurred. Data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and chi-square tests., Results: The metal group had the highest fracture resistance (244.41 ± 75.20 N), with a significant variance compared to that in the CAD/CAM groups (p < 0.001). No significant differences were observed among the non-metallic groups., Conclusions: While several CAD/CAM materials displayed satisfactory flexural properties, cast metal posts showed superior fracture resistance in endodontically treated teeth but were mostly associated with catastrophic failure. This clinical paper provides an in-depth exploration of advanced techniques for bonding orthodontic attachments under special circumstances. Challenges arise when bonding brackets to non-enamel surfaces, such as dental restorations, and in conditions such as amelogenesis imperfecta, which affect enamel integrity. Distinct approaches required for bonding to different restorative materials, including glassy ceramics, zirconia, resin composites and metals, are outlined. This study assessed the monotonic and fatigue flexural strength (FS), elastic modulus (E), and surface characteristics of a 3D printed zirconia-containing resin composite compared to subtractive and conventional layering methods. Specimens, including discs (n = 15; Ø = 15 mm × 1.2 mm) and bars (n = 15; 14 × 4 × 1.2 mm), were prepared and categorized into three groups: 3D printing (3D printing - PriZma 3D Bio Crown, Makertech), Subtractive (Lava Ultimate blocks, 3M), and Layering (Filtek Z350 XT, 3M). Monotonic tests were performed on the discs using a piston-on-three-balls setup, while fatigue tests employed similar parameters with a frequency of 10 Hz, initial stress at 20 MPa, and stress increments every 5000 cycles. The E was determined through three-point-bending test using bars. Surface roughness, fractographic, and topographic analyses were conducted. Statistical analyses included One-way ANOVA for monotonic FS and roughness, Kruskal-Wallis for E, and Kaplan-Meier with post-hoc Mantel-Cox and Weibull analysis for fatigue strength. Results revealed higher monotonic strength in the Subtractive group compared to 3D printing (p = 0.02) and Layering (p = 0.04), while 3D Printing and Layering exhibited similarities (p = 0.88). Fatigue data indicated significant differences across all groups (3D Printing < Layering < Subtractive; p = 0.00 and p = 0.04, respectively). Mechanical reliability was comparable across groups. 3D printing and Subtractive demonstrated similar E, both surpassing Layering. Moreover, 3D printing exhibited higher surface roughness than Subtractive and Layering (p < 0.05). Fractographic analysis indicated that fractures initiated at surface defects located in the area subjected to tensile stress concentration. A porous surface was observed in the 3D Printing group and a more compact surface in Subtractive and Layering methods. This study distinguishes the unique properties of 3D printed resin when compared to conventional layering and subtractive methods for resin-based materials. 3D printed shows comparable monotonic strength to layering but lags behind in fatigue strength, with subtractive resin demonstrating superior performance. Both 3D printed and subtractive exhibit similar elastic moduli, surpassing layering. However, 3D printed resin displays higher surface roughness compared to subtractive and layering methods. Objective: To investigate fatigue methods for the evaluation of translucent zirconia and to associate in vitro failures with clinically reported ones., Data: Studies published in English that used fatigue tests on dental translucent zirconia., Sources: Two databases (MEDLINE/PubMed and Scopus) were electronically searched without any restriction on year of publication., Study Selection: A total of 4555 studies were identified. After removal of duplicates (78) and irrelevant articles (4316) that did not meet the inclusion criteria, 161 articles were considered eligible based on their titles and abstracts. These articles were fully read, leading to the inclusion of 41 studies in the review., Results: The most widely used fatigue method for evaluation of translucent zirconia was step-stress (18 articles), followed by staircase (seven articles), and step-wise (two articles). Most studies had been conducted in a wet environment with the use of a stainless steel piston to apply load to cemented structures on a dentin-like substrate. Most fracture analyses indicated the fracture originated on the cementation or contact surface where the load was applied. Moreover, studies that utilized anatomical structures (dental crowns) reported fractures starting at the cervical margin of the crowns., Conclusion: Most studies used the step-stress method. Purpose: To evaluate the effect of different printing orientations and post-polymerization time with thermal cycling on the translucency of 3D-printed denture base resins., Methods: Heat-polymerized (HP) acrylic resin specimens were fabricated and 3D-printed denture base materials (NextDent, ASIGA, FormLabs) were printed with different printing orientations (0, 45, 90 degrees) and subjected to different post-polymerization times (15-, 30-, 60-, and 90-min). All specimens were polished and immersed in distilled water for 1 day at 37°C. CIEDE2000 was used to measure the translucency parameters (TP 00 ) before and after thermal cycling (5000 cycles) recording the color parameters (L * , a * , b * ) against a black and white background using a spectrophotometer. k-factors ANOVA followed by post hoc Tukey's test (α = .05) was performed for statistical analysis., Results: The k-factors ANOVA test showed a significant effect of resin material, post-polymerization time, and printing orientation on translucency (p < 0.001). In comparison to HP, all 3D-printed resins showed lower translucency with all post-polymerization times and printing orientation (p < 0.001) except FormLabs resin (p > 0.05). For all 3D-printed resins, the translucency increased, with increasing the post-polymerization time (p < 0.001) and 60- and 90-min showed the highest translucency. For printing orientation, 90 and 45 degrees significantly showed high translucency in comparison to 0 degrees (p < 0.001). FormLabs showed significantly higher translucency when compared with NextDent and ASIGA per respective printing orientation and post-polymerization time. The translucency significantly decreased after thermal cycling for all tested resins (p < 0.001)., Conclusion: The findings of this study demonstrated that the translucency of 3D-printed resins is influenced by the printing orientation, post-polymerization time, and resin type. Objectives: To evaluate the accumulative effect of 3D printer, implant analog systems, and implant angulation on the accuracy of analog position in implant casts., Methods: A reference cast, presenting a case of a three-unit implant-supported prosthesis, was scanned with a coordinate measurement machine, producing the first reference data set (CMM, n = 1). The second reference data set (n = 10) was prepared using an intraoral scanner (IOS) (Trios4). Test quadrant casts were produced using three DLP type 3D printers, Max (MAX UV385), Pro (PRO 4K65 UV), and Nex (NextDent 5100), and three implant analog systems, El (Elos), Nt (Nt-trading), and St (Straumann) (n = 90). Stone casts were also produced via analog impressions (Stone, n = 10). After digitization, the accuracy of 3D distance, local angulation (angle between implants) and global angulation (angle between the implant center axis and an axis perpendicular to the global plane) was evaluated by comparing the reference (CMM, IOS), test (3D print), and control (Stone) groups using metrology software. Data were statistically analyzed using three-way ANOVA and Tukey`s tests (α = 0.05)., Results: IOS was truer in 3D implant distance and more precise in capturing local angulation than Stone (p ≤ 0.05). Other measurements were similar between both groups (p > 0.05). The amount of error introduced in the workflow by IOS and 3D printing was mostly similar (p > 0.05). 3D printed casts had similar or even higher accuracy than Stone group (p > 0.05). In most cases, higher trueness was achieved when using PRO 4K65 UV 3D printer and Elos implant analog system (p ≤ 0.05)., Conclusion: 3D printer, implant analog system, and implant angulation have a significant effect on the accuracy of analog position in implant casts. Objectives: To compare the performance of Cention-N® with direct restorative materials used at the daily practice (e.g., resin-based composites/RBC, glass ionomer cements/GIC, bioactive resins, silver amalgam) via a systematic review study., Methods: The review followed the PRISMA-NMA recommendations, and the protocol of the review was published at osf.io/ybde8. The search was conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, Lilacs, and SciELO databases, as well as in the grey literature (Open Grey, Proquest, and Periódicos CAPES). Studies with an in vitro experimental design evaluating the characteristics and properties of Cention-N in comparison to other restorative materials were included. The risk of bias of included studies was assessed using the RoBDEMAT tool, and meta-analyses were conducted using Review Manager 5.4 and MetaInsight V3 tools., Results: A total of 85 studies were included in the review, from which 79 were meta-analyzed. Several characteristics of direct restorative materials were analyzed, including physical (color change, degree of conversion, hardness, microleakage, polymerization rate, roughness, water solubility, water sorption), mechanical (bond strength to dentin, compressive strength, diametral tensile strength, flexural modulus, flexural strength, load-to-fracture, wear), and biological (alkalinizing effect, antibacterial activity, calcium and fluoride release) properties., Significance: Cention-N presented similar physico-mechanical properties compared to RBCs, but a stronger behavior than GICs. Despite the Alkasite nature of Cention-N, GICs may still demonstrate the greatest fluoride releasing ability from all direct restorative materials. Objectives: Develop a sustainable bovine hydroxyapatite dental ceramic with the addition of titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) nanoparticles (5 % and 8 % by weight), analyzing the outcome of this addition to the microstructure, as well as its mechanical and chemical properties, in order to evaluate whether they satisfy the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 6872:2015 for dental ceramics or not., Methods: Disks were obtained through uniaxial followed by isostatic pressing from bovine hydroxyapatite powder and TiO 2 nanoparticles and sintered at 1300ºC for 2 h. Three experimental groups were developed (HA, HA+5 %TiO 2 and HA+8 %TiO 2 ) and subjected to X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), indentation fracture (IF), biaxial flexural strength (BFS) and chemical solubility test., Results: XRD revealed, for HA group, the appearance of a peak corresponding to b-tricalcium phosphate (ß-TCP). For HA+ 5 %TiO 2 and HA+ 8 %TiO 2, the entire composition was converted into ß-TCP and calcium titanate (CaTiO 3 ). The SEM images showed a dense ceramic matrix and a uniform distribution of another phase in groups with TiO 2 nanoparticles. HA+ 5 %TiO 2 (1.40 ± 0.18 MPa.m 1/2 ) and HA+ 8 %TiO 2 (1.32 ± 0.18 MPa.m 1/2 ) showed significantly higher fracture toughness values than HA (0.67 ± 0.09 MPa.m 1/2 ). HA showed significantly higher characteristic stress (295.8 MPa) in comparison to groups with 5 % (235.1 MPa) and 8 % (214.4 MPa) TiO 2 nanoparticles. Differences were not observed between the Weibull modulus values. The solubility results indicated that all experimental ceramics were above the 2000 ug/cm 2 limit set by the ISO 6872:2015., Significance: This study proposed the development and characterization of a new ceramic for dental prosthesis made from HA extracted from bovine bones, with the intention of reusing these solids waste and transforming them into a sustainable and low-cost material. Implant abutments are essential components of implant prosthetic restorations. The golden standard for abutment material is titanium; however, due to its properties, the esthetic result can be compromised. The most popular esthetic material alternatives are one- and two-piece zirconia. The study aimed to answer the questions of whether zirconia abutments can be used interchangeably with titanium in both anterior and posterior regions and how aging of the abutment affects durability. For this study, an electronic search of MEDLINE (PubMed) and Scopus (Embase) was conducted. The PRISMA guidelines were followed, and a systematic review was registered with PROSPERO. The search revealed 4031 results, of which 17 studies were selected. The strongest material for abutments is titanium, closely followed by two-piece zirconia. One-piece zirconia abutments were the weakest. The cyclic loading above 1,000,000 cycles decreased the fracture resistance of the abutments. Differences in implant diameter, angulation, and restoration affected the fracture strength of all compared materials. The main mode of failure for titanium abutments was screw bending or screw fracture. One-piece zirconia most often presented catastrophic failure with internal hexagon fracture below the implant neck. Two-piece zirconia exhibits a combination of failure modes. Two-piece zirconia abutments may be suitable for use in the posterior region, given their comparable fracture resistance to titanium abutments. Despite the fact that one-piece zirconia is capable of withstanding forces that exceed those exerted during mastication, it is recommended that it be employed primarily in the anterior dentition due to its propensity for unfavorable failure modes.

This study evaluated the effect of stearyl methacrylate addition on the physical and mechanical properties of bisphenol A glycidyl methacrylate- and triethylene glycol dimethacrylate-based polymers, which are traditionally used in dental applications. Methacrylate-based monomer compositions are polymerized under the visible blue light spectrum. An analysis of double bond conversion, surface microhardness test, three-point bending test and water sorption and water solubility were tested to determine the physical and mechanical properties of the dental polymers. The results indicated that stearyl methacrylate addition up to 25 wt% reduced the water sorption of the polymers. At amounts of stearyl methacrylate higher than 25 wt%, the solubility of the polymer in water increases due to the monofunctional structure. Mechanical properties are negatively affected by the increasing stearyl methacrylate ratio. Further, the addition of stearyl methacrylate slightly increased thermal stability. As such, the amount of stearyl methacrylate in a polymer composition is critical for the optimization of its mechanical and physical properties. According to the results, the amount of stearyl methacrylate has to be between 12.5-25 wt%.

Periodontitis is a highly prevalent disease that damages the supporting tissues of a tooth, including the alveolar bone. Alveolar bone loss owing to periodontitis is broadly categorized as supra-alveolar and intra-alveolar bone loss. In intra-alveolar bone loss, the defect has an angular or oblique orientation to the long axis of the tooth in an apical direction. In contrast, the defect is perpendicular to the long axis of the tooth in supra-alveolar bone loss. Unlike intra-alveolar bone defects, supra-alveolar bone defects lack supporting adjacent space, which makes supra-alveolar bone regeneration more challenging. In addition, the limited availability of resources in terms of vascularity and underlying tissues is another obstacle to supra-alveolar bone regeneration. Currently, supra-alveolar bone loss is the least predictable periodontal defect type in regenerative periodontal therapy. In addition, supra-alveolar bone loss is much more common than other alveolar bone loss. Despite its prevalence, research on supra-alveolar bone regeneration remains sparse, indicating an unmet need for significant research efforts in this area. This review summarize recent advances, obstacles, and future directions in the field of supra-alveolar bone regeneration. We discuss the biomaterials, bioactive molecules, and cells that have been tested for supra-alveolar bone regeneration, followed by pre-clinical and clinical approaches employed in this field. This systematic review evaluated the efficacy of doxycycline in MMP inhibition, its antibacterial action, and other properties relevant to dental materials testing. The study protocol was registered at the Open Science Framework ( https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/ZVK2T ). Reporting was based on PRISMA statement. The search was carried out in the databases: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, Lilacs, and Google Scholar. Articles were restricted to Portuguese, English, and Spanish, with no date limit. In vitro studies were selected based on the following outcomes: DOX antibacterial and anti-metalloproteinase activity and its influence in physico-chemical properties. Two researchers independently selected the articles and collected the data. Of 1507 documents, 82 were fully evaluated and 21 were included. Different forms of doxycycline incorporation were found, both as free form and incorporated into carrier agents. The drug was tested as primers, incorporated in adhesive or glass ionomer cement. No studies were found that evaluated its incorporation in resin composite or resin cement. The results confirmed the therapeutic properties of the medication, with more significant results when incorporated in an adhesive. However, although promising, the use of this substance requires standardization in application methods and adopted concentrations, allowing for more direct comparisons between studies. Furthermore, long-term studies are interesting to conduct, ensuring biocompatibility and complete understanding of long-term effects on dental materials., (© 2024. Objectives: The aim of this retrospective study was to compare the clinical results of two root canal sealers and three obturation techniques used for non-surgical root canal treatment., Materials and Methods: A total of two hundred eighty-three root canal treated teeth in two hundred thirty-seven patients with minimum a 6-month follow-up was included for this study. The canals were filled with three different modes: 1) cold lateral condensation (CLC) and AH Plus Sealer; 2) continuous wave condensation technique (CWC) and AH Plus Sealer, and 3) sealer-based obturation technique (SBO) and AH Plus Bioceramic Sealer. The treatment outcome was analysed based on clinical signs and symptoms, and periapical radiograph (periapical index, PAI)., Results: There were no significant differences in treatment outcome between various sealers and filling techniques applied. The sealer extrusion was found most frequently in the CWC group (60.67%), followed by SBO (59.21%) and CLC (21.19%) with statistically significant differences (p < .05). The initial diagnosis, previous treatment and sealer extrusion (p < .05) were prognostic factors that affected treatment outcome., Conclusions: Based on the findings of this study, neither the sealer type nor the filling technique affected the treatment success while preoperative diagnosis, previous treatment and sealer extrusion had significant effect on the outcome., Clinical Relevance: A bioceramic sealant applied along with the single-cone technique might be considered as an alternative method in root canal obturation., (© 2024. The introduction of 3D printing technology in dentistry has opened new treatment options. The ongoing development of different materials for these printing purposes has recently enabled the production of definitive indirect restorations via 3D printing. To identify relevant data, a systematic search was conducted in three databases, namely PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Additionally, a manual search using individual search terms was performed. Only English, peer-reviewed articles that encompassed in vitro or in vivo research on the mechanical properties of 3D-printed composite materials were included, provided they met the predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. After screening 1142 research articles, 14 primary studies were selected. The included studies mainly utilized digital light processing (DLP) technology, less commonly stereolithography (SLA), and once PolyJet printing technology. The material properties of various composite resins, such as VarseoSmile Crown Plus (VSC) and Crowntec (CT), were studied, including Vickers hardness, flexural strength, elastic modulus, compressive strength, tensile strength, fracture resistance, and wear. The studies aimed to compare the behavior of the tested additive composites to each other, conventional composites, and subtractive-manufactured materials. This scoping review examined the mechanical properties of composites used for 3D printing of definitive restorations. The aim was to provide a comprehensive overview of the current knowledge on this topic and identify any gaps for future research. The findings suggest that 3D-printed composites are not yet the first option for indirect restorations, due to their insufficient mechanical properties. Due to limited evidence, more research is needed in this area. Specifically, there is a need for clinical trials and long-term in vivo research.

Biocompatibility testing using in vivo tests is often one of the final evaluations of new dental materials. To reduce the likelihood of failure at this late stage, predictive biocompatibility testing using in vitro methods is needed. In this study, we describe a sensitivity analysis of an oral irritation test by evaluating changes in the viability, using the MTT assay, of 3-D models with EpiOral constructs as a case study. Experiments that tested sources of variability in the assay led to recommendations regarding the storage of the constructs after arrival, pipetting procedure, use of MTT reagents from different vendors, use of transepithelial electrical resistance measurements, and statistical analyses. A statistical model was proposed to evaluate whether test substances yield a positive or negative result and the associated statistical confidence. Testing several test compounds such as the Y-4 polymer, that contains a known irritant, and dentally relevant substances such as sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) at varying concentrations revealed statistically significant results as expected. Lastly, a software app was designed to support a multiwell culture plate layout design. Overall, the findings and suggestions documented here will support the further development and potential standardization of this assay system and may be useful for the development of other assays using 3-D constructs.

Objective: Nanozyme materials combine the advantages of natural enzymes and artificial catalysis, and have been widely applied in new technologies for dental materials and oral disease treatment. Based on the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oxidative stress pathways in the occurrence and therapy of oral diseases, a comprehensive review was conducted on the methods and mechanisms of nanozymes and their dental materials in treating different oral diseases., Methods: This review is based on literature surveys from PubMed and Web of Science databases, as well as reviews of relevant researches and publications on nanozymes in the therapy of oral diseases and oral tumors in international peer-reviewed journals., Results: Given the unique function of nanozymes in the generation and elimination of ROS, they play an important role in the occurrence, development, and treatment of different oral diseases. The application of nanozymes in dental materials and oral disease treatment was introduced, including the latest advances in their use for dental caries, pulpitis, jaw osteomyelitis, periodontitis, oral mucosal diseases, temporomandibular joint disorders, and oral tumors. Future approaches were also summarized and proposed based on the characteristics of these diseases., Significance: This review will guide biomedical researchers and oral clinicians to understand the mechanisms and applications of nanozymes in the therapy of oral diseases, promoting further development in the field of dental materials within the oral medication. Objective: This article puts forward consensus recommendations from PROSEC North America regarding single indirect restorations made from ceramic and nonmetallic biomaterials in posterior teeth., Overview: The consensus process involved a multidisciplinary panel and three consensus workshops. A systematic literature review was conducted across five databases to gather evidence. The recommendations, informed by findings from systematic reviews and formulated based on a two-phase e-Delphi survey, emphasize a comprehensive treatment strategy that includes noninvasive measures alongside restorative interventions for managing dental caries and tooth wear. The recommendations advocate for selecting between direct and indirect restorations on a case-by-case basis, favoring inlays and onlays over crowns to align with minimally invasive dentistry principles. The recommendations highlight the critical role of selecting restorative biomaterials based on clinical performance, esthetic properties, and adherence to manufacturer guidelines. They emphasize the importance of precision in restorative procedures, including tooth preparation, impression taking, contamination control, and luting. Regular follow-up and maintenance tailored to individual patient needs are crucial for the longevity of ceramic and nonmetallic restorations., Conclusions: These PROSEC recommendations provide a framework for dental practitioners to deliver high-quality restorative care, advocating for personalized treatment planning and minimally invasive approaches to optimize oral health outcomes., Clinical Significance: The PROSEC North America recommendations highlight the importance of minimally invasive techniques in posterior tooth restorations using ceramic and non-metallic biomaterials. Dental materials are challenged by wear processes in the oral environment and should be evaluated in laboratory tests prior to clinical use. Many laboratory wear-testing devices are high-cost investments and not available for cross-centre comparisons. The 'Rub&Roll' wear machine enables controlled application of force, chemical and mechanical loading, but the initial design was not able to test against rigid antagonist materials. The current study aimed to probe the sensitivity of a new 'Rub&Roll' set-up by evaluating the effect of force and test solution parameters (deionized water; water + abrasive medium; acid + abrasive medium) on the wear behaviour of direct and indirect dental resin-based composites (RBCs) compared with human molars against 3D-printed rod antagonists. Molars exhibited greater height loss than RBCs in all test groups, with the largest differences recorded with acidic solutions. Direct RBCs showed significantly greater wear than indirect RBCs in the groups containing abrasive media. The acidic + abrasive medium did not result in increased wear of RBC materials. The developed method using the 'Rub&Roll' wear machine in the current investigation has provided a sensitive wear test method to allow initial screening of resin-based composite materials compared with extracted human molars under the influence of different mechanical and erosive challenges., (© 2024. Aim: The objective of the present study was to evaluate the influence of different adhesive strategies regarding shear bond strength (SBS) of provisional resin--based materials bonded to the enamel surface as well as on the enamel surface roughness., Materials and Methods: Bovine incisors were randomly divided into six groups (n &#61; 10) according to the adhesive strategy used: BRControl (bis-acrylic resin); Spot-etch&#43;BR (spot-etch &#43; bis-acrylic resin); Spot--etchSB2&#43;BR (spot-etch &#43; adhesive &#43; bis-acrylic resin); Spot-etchZ350Flow&#43;BR (spot-etch &#43; flowable composite resin &#43; bis-acrylic resin); SBU&#43;BR (universal adhesive &#43; bis-acrylic resin); Spot-etchSBMP&#43;Z350 (spot-etch &#43; adhesive &#43; composite resin). The enamel surface roughness was determined by a surface profil-ometer. An SBS test was performed in a universal testing machine, and failure modes were classified under magnification. The SBS data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). A paired t test was used for enamel surface roughness intragroup comparisons, and the Friedman one-way repeated meas-ures analysis of variance by ranks was used for differences in enamel surface roughness between groups, with the Tukey post hoc test (a &#61; 0.05)., Results: BRControl had the lowest SBS values (MPa), with a significant difference (P ≤ 0.001) from the other groups. Spot-etch&#43;BR had the highest SBS values but with no significant differences from the other groups in which the spot-etch technique was also used. Adhesive failure mode was predominant for all groups. BRControl had the lowest surface roughness difference, significantly different (P &#61; 0.001) from all the other groups., Conclusions: Spot-etch and other adhesive strategies could be applied to increase the SBS values of provisional restorations to enamel compared with no surface pretreatment. However, the adhesive strategy may change the enamel surface roughness, revealing the importance of cleaning the tooth surface.

Objective: The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the accuracy (trueness and precision), marginal and internal adaptation, and margin quality of zirconia crowns made by additive manufacturing compared to subtractive manufacturing technology., Methods: The investigation adhered to the PRISMA-ScR guidelines for systematic reviews and was registered at the Prospero database (n°CRD42023452927). Four electronic databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science and manual search was conducted to find relevant studies published until September 2023. In vitro studies that assessed the trueness and precision, marginal and internal adaptation, and margin quality of printed crowns compared to milled ones were included. Studies on crowns over implants, pontics, temporary restorations, laminates, or exclusively experimental materials were excluded., Results: A total of 9 studies were included in the descriptive reporting and 7 for meta-analysis. The global meta-analysis of the trueness (P<0.74,I 2 =90 %) and the margin quality (P<0.61,I 2 =0 %) indicated no significant difference between the root mean square of printed and milled zirconia crowns. The subgroup analysis for the printing system showed a significant effect (P<0.01). The meta-analysis of the crown areas indicated no significant difference in most of the areas, except for the marginal (favoring milled crowns) and axial (favoring printed crowns) areas. For precision and adaptation, both methods showed a clinically acceptable level., Conclusions: Additive manufacturing technology produces crowns with trueness and margin quality comparable to subtractive manufacturing. The utilization of two-component systems comprising camphorquinone (CQ) and aromatic amines has become prevalent in the photopolymerization. However, there are still concerns about the safety of this CQ/amine system, mainly because of the toxicity associated with the leaching of aromatic amines. In light of these concerns, this study aims to develop novel coinitiator combinations featuring CQ and amines which cannot be leached out of materials, enabling free radical polymerization of representative dentalmethacrylate resins under blue light irradiation. This approach involves the initial design and analysis of hydrogen donors with low C─H bond dissociation energy through molecular modeling. Subsequently, copolymerizable methacrylate functional groups are incorporated via chemical modification, allowing it to act as both coinitiator and copolymerization monomer to achieve low migrationand leachability properties. This work presents, for the first time, the synthesis of the innovative coinitiator and compares its performance with the benchmark CQ/ethyl-4-dimethylaminobenzoate (EDB)-based photoinitiation system (PIS). The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the newly proposed PIS. This study aimed to investigate the bisphenol A (BPA) release from four CAD/CAM splint materials: three polycarbonate-based (DD BioSplint C, Splint Plus Biostar, Temp Premium Flexible) and one polymethylmethacrylate-based (Temp Basic) material. From each material, ten cylindrical samples (n = 40) were immersed in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) grade water following ISO 10993-12 and incubated for 24 h in an incubation shaker at 37°C and 112 rpm. Following BPA derivatization, analysis was performed by high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). After 24 h of incubation, all investigated materials released significant amounts of BPA compared to water blanks. The material-dependent elution increased in the following order: DD BioSplint C < Splint Plus Biostar < Temp Basic < Temp Premium Flexible. Subtracting extraneous BPA, the concentrations ranged between 2.27 ng/mL and 12.65 ng/mL. After extrapolating the concentrations in relation to the average surface area of occlusal splints, the amount of BPA per mL exceeded the Tolerable Daily Intake (TDI) set by the European Union for a person weighing 70 kg by 1.32-6.16 times. Contrary to the release from previously investigated materials, BPA elution from CAD/CAM splint materials was highly elevated. Introduction: It is crucial for dental surgeons to use the mechanical properties of dental prosthetic materials to correlate the submersion time in a mangrove environment., Objective: This study aimed to submerge dental prosthetic materials, such as acrylic resin and zirconia, contained within acrylic resin disks in a mangrove environment, and analyze the alterations in mechanical parameters, such as surface roughness and microhardness, to estimate submergence time in similar forensic situations., Materials and Methods: A total of 6 specimens was embedded in acrylic resin disks numbered from 1 to 6. The materials were polished for initial parameter readings a day before submersion, and new readings were obtained 1after submersion. All specimens were subjected to surface roughness analysis, in addition to Knoop microhardness analysis for acrylic resin and Vickers microhardness analysis for zirconia. Introduction: This study aimed to develop a module that incorporates hands-on and reflective feedback in teaching dental materials science and subsequently analyse undergraduate dental students' learning experiences with the module., Materials and Methods: The module was developed based on the ADDIE (Analyse, Design, Develop, Implement, Evaluate) model. First, a need analysis was conducted, followed by designing the module to address the needs. Next, the module sought experts' feedback and was piloted. The revised module was implemented among all second-year undergraduate dental students. Finally, a validated questionnaire (5-point Likert scale items and open-ended questions) was used to evaluate students' learning experiences. The questionnaire Likert scale items were analysed descriptively, whereas open-ended responses were analysed using content analysis., Results: In the analysis phase, a slight misalignment in cognitive competency levels was observed, alongside a need for the inclusion of more hands-on activities. In the design phase, learning objectives and resources were listed. Subsequently, a module consisting of four teaching sessions (3 h each) was developed, and the pilot test showed favourable feedback. The module was then implemented in small groups of 10-12 students. In the evaluation phase, 72 students (97% response rate) completed the questionnaire. The majority of students agreed with all items, with mean scores ranging from 4.53 to 4.72. Open-ended responses highlighted that hands-on activities and reflective feedback sessions were useful., Conclusion: Students demonstrated positive learning experiences after participating in the module, advocating for dental educators to consider more hands-on activities and reflective feedback sessions in teaching dental materials science., (© 2024 John Wiley & Sons A/S. Laboratory evidence has shown that 45S5 bioglass can help in dental remineralization, so its incorporation into resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) has been studied. This randomized clinical trial aimed to determine the efficacy of RMGIC enriched with 10% 45S5 bioglass (RMGIC/45S5) in preventing the progression of moderate caries lesions. Sixty-six permanent molars with moderate caries lesions, were randomly sealed with RMGIC or RMGIC/45S5. After 1, 3-6 months, patients' oral health, material behavior, and caries evolution were evaluated. Chi-square and Fisher's exact test was employed. After one month, the RMGIC showed higher total retention and better clinical performance compared to RMGIC/45S5, both showed a predominance of sealed teeth or without caries progression. After 6 months, no materials retention, quality and caries progression difference was observed for both materials. Short-term clinical follow-up reveals worse retention and quality of RMGIC/45S5, only after 6 months no clinical/microscopic differences are observed between the materials.

The objective was to compare the color match and color stability behavior of single- and multi-shade resin-based composites (RBCs) used for direct restorations. This review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Randomized clinical trials evaluating the shade performance of single-shade RBCs in direct restorations were included. A search of the scientific literature was performed in five databases (April 2024). The meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.4, calculating the risk difference (RD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of the dichotomous outcome using a random effects model. Bias was assessed using the RoB 2.0 tool, and certainty of evidence was assessed using the GRADEpro tool. Four studies were selected, with 263 restorations analyzed. The results showed comparable performance between single-shade RBCs and multi-shade RBCs in terms of color match and color stability over 12 months. Three studies had a low risk of bias with all expected results, and one study had some concerns. The certainty of evidence for color stability was considered low for all follow-up periods due to the small number of events and sample size. According to the United States Public Health Service Evaluation (USPHS) and the World Dental Federation (FDI), there is comparable clinical color performance between single-shade and multi-shade RBCs over 12 months.

Graphene is a promising biomaterial. However, its dispersion in aqueous medium is challenging. This study aimed to modify graphene nanoparticles with L-dopa to improve the properties of experimental dental adhesives. Adhesives were formulated with 0% (control), 0.25%, 0.5%, and 0.75% of graphene, modified or not. Particle modification and dispersion were microscopically assessed. Degree of conversion was tested by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Flexural strength and modulus of elasticity were evaluated by a 3-point flexural test. Bond strength was tested by shear. To test water sorption/solubility, samples were weighed during hydration and dehydration. Antibacterial activity was tested by Streptococcus mutans colony-forming units quantification. Cytotoxicity on fibroblasts was evaluated through a dentin barrier test. The modification of graphene improved the particle dispersion. Control presented the highest degree of conversion, flexural strength, and bond strength. In degree of conversion, 0.25% of groups were similar to control. In bond strength, groups of graphene modified by L-dopa were similar to Control. The modulus of elasticity was similar between groups. Cytotoxicity and water sorption/solubility decreased as particles increased. Compared to graphene, less graphene modified by L-dopa was needed to promote antibacterial activity. By modifying graphene with L-dopa, the properties of graphene and, therefore, the adhesives incorporated by it were enhanced.

The purpose of this finite element analysis (FEA) was to evaluate the stress distribution within the prosthetic components and bone in relation to varying cement thicknesses (from 20 to 60 μm) utilized to attach a zirconia crown on a conometric cap. The study focused on two types of implants (Cyroth and TAC, AoN Implants, Grisignano di Zocco, Italy) featuring a Morse cone connection. Detailed three-dimensional (3D) models were developed to represent the bone structure (cortical and trabecular) and the prosthetic components, including the crown, cement, cap, abutment, and the implant. Both implants were placed 1.5 mm subcrestally and subjected to a 200 N load at a 45° inclination on the crown. The results indicated that an increase in cement thickness led to a reduction in von Mises stress on the cortical bone for both Cyroth and TAC implants, while the decrease in stress on the trabecular bone (apical zone) was relatively less pronounced. However, the TAC implant exhibited a higher stress field in the apical area compared to the Cyroth implant. In summary, this study investigated the influence of cement thickness on stress transmission across prosthetic components and peri-implant tissues through FEA analysis, emphasizing that the 60 μm cement layer demonstrated higher stress values approaching the material strength limit.

Its potential to improve the accuracy and speed of dental procedures is set to revolutionize dental care. The use of AI in computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) within the restorative dental and material science fields offers numerous benefits, providing a new dimension to these practices. This study aims to provide a concise overview of the implementation of AI-powered technologies in CAD/CAM restorative dental procedures and materials. A comprehensive literature search was conducted using keywords from 2000 to 2023 to obtain pertinent information. This method was implemented to guarantee a thorough investigation of the subject matter. Keywords included; "Artificial Intelligence", "Machine Learning", "Neural Networks", "Virtual Reality", "Digital Dentistry", "CAD/CAM", and "Restorative Dentistry". Artificial intelligence in digital restorative dentistry has proven to be highly beneficial in various dental CAD/CAM applications. It helps in automating and incorporating esthetic factors, occlusal schemes, and previous practitioners' CAD choices in fabricating dental restorations. AI can also predict the debonding risk of CAD/CAM restorations and the compositional effects on the mechanical properties of its materials. During implant maintenance, preserving a smooth surface on the machined trans-mucosa abutment is critical to reduce biofilm attachment and colonization. The present study compare the surface roughness and bacterial colonization of machined titanium surfaces after instrumentation with various materials. Forty-four machined Grade 23 titanium discs were instrumented with a round Polyether Ether Ketone (PEEK) tip, a plastic curette tip, or a pure titanium curette tip with piezoelectric devices. Before and after instrumentation, the surface roughness (Ra and Rz) values were analyzed with a profilometer and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Streptococcus sanguinis was cultured and incubated for 24 hours on the instrumented discs, and colony-forming units (CFU)/mL were obtained for each group. Samples instrumented with the metal ultrasonic tip significantly increased surface roughness compared to the other groups. Thisresulted in greater colonization by S. sanguinis than surfaces instrumented with PEEK tips or the negative control. Samples instrumented with PEEK and plastic tips did not exhibit any statistically significant increase in surface roughness. SEM analysis revealed a significantly rougher surface of discs instrumented with metal compared to discs instrumented with plastic or PEEK tip, despite the possibility of debris from tip dissolution. Our results suggested that instrumentation with metal ultrasonic tips with piezoelectric devices significantly increase machined titanium's surface roughness and elicited higher biofilm formation in vitro. Meanwhile, instrumentation of machined titanium with PEEK or plastic ultrasonic tips did not affect the surface roughness or bacterial adhesion.

Purpose: This review aims to summarize the available technologies, material categories, and prosthodontic applications of additive manufacturing (AM) dental ceramics, evaluate the achievable accuracy and mechanical properties in comparison with current mainstream computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) subtractive manufacturing (SM) methods, and discuss future prospects and directions., Study Selection: This paper is based on the latest reviews, state-of-the-art research, and existing ISO standards on AM technologies and prosthodontic applications of dental ceramics. PubMed, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect were amongst the sources searched for narrative reviews., Results: Relatively few AM technologies are available and their applications are limited to crowns and fixed partial dentures. Although the accuracy and strength of AM dental ceramics are comparable to those of SM, they have the limitations of relatively inferior curved surface accuracy and low strength reliability. Furthermore, functionally graded additive manufacturing (FGAM), a potential direction for AM, enables the realization of biomimetic structures, such as natural teeth; however, specific studies are currently lacking., Conclusions: AM dental ceramics are not sufficiently developed for large-scale clinical applications. However, with additional research, it may be possible for AM to replace SM as the mainstream manufacturing technology for ceramic restorations.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to establish and assess the validity of in silico models of biaxial flexural strength (BFS) tests to reflect in vitro physical properties obtained from two commercially available computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) ceramic blocks and one CAD/CAM resin composite block., Methods: In vitro three-point bending and BFS tests were conducted for three CAD/CAM materials (n = 10): Katana Zirconia ST10 (raw material: super-translucent multilayered zirconia, ST10; Kuraray Noritake Dental, Niigata, Japan), Katana Zirconia HT10 (raw material: highly translucent multilayered zirconia, HT10; Kuraray Noritake Dental), and Katana Avencia N (AN; Kuraray Noritake Dental). Densities, flexural moduli, and fracture strains were obtained from the in vitro three-point bending test and used as an input for an in silico nonlinear finite element analysis. The maximum principal stress (MPS) distribution was obtained from an in silico BFS analysis., Results: The elastic moduli of AN, HT10, and ST10 were 6.513, 40.039, and 32.600 GPa, respectively. The in silico fracture pattern of ST10 observed after the in silico evaluation was similar to the fracture pattern observed after the in vitro testing. The MPS was registered in the center of the tensile surface for all three specimens. The projections of the supporting balls were in the form of a triple asymmetry., Conclusions: The in silico approach established in this study provided an acceptable reflection of in vitro physical properties, and will be useful to assess biaxial flexural properties of CAD/CAM materials without wastage of materials.

The intricate nature of oral-maxillofacial structure and function, coupled with the dynamic oral bacterial environment, presents formidable obstacles in addressing the repair and regeneration of oral-maxillofacial bone defects. Numerous characteristics should be noticed in oral-maxillofacial bone repair, such as irregular morphology of bone defects, homeostasis between hosts and microorganisms in the oral cavity and complex periodontal structures that facilitate epithelial ingrowth. Therefore, oral-maxillofacial bone repair necessitates restoration materials that adhere to stringent and specific demands. This review starts with exploring these particular requirements by introducing the particular characteristics of oral-maxillofacial bones and then summarizes the classifications of current bone repair materials in respect of composition and structure. Additionally, we discuss the modifications in current bone repair materials including improving mechanical properties, optimizing surface topography and pore structure and adding bioactive components such as elements, compounds, cells and their derivatives. Ultimately, we organize a range of potential optimization strategies and future perspectives for enhancing oral-maxillofacial bone repair materials, including physical environment manipulation, oral microbial homeostasis modulation, osteo-immune regulation, smart stimuli-responsive strategies and multifaceted approach for poly-pathic treatment, in the hope of providing some insights for researchers in this field. Introduction A little over ten years ago, zirconia crowns made their debut in the field of dentistry. Despite early problems with the chipping of veneering porcelain, clinical studies have demonstrated excellent performance. It is essential for a ceramic crown to have good aesthetic qualities, in addition to having good mechanical characteristics. The exceptional mechanical qualities of zirconia crowns and the simplicity with which they may be machined, employing computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing schemes, are primarily responsible for the widespread use of these materials in clinical settings. New ceramic-based materials, including monolithic zirconia, zirconia-containing lithium disilicate ceramics, and graded glass/zirconia/glass, have recently been launched in the field of dentistry. These newly discovered zirconia crown materials stem from varied technological approaches, each likely to lead to additional clinical advancements. At this point, it seems imperative to offer a concentrated report on the newer developments, along with essential clinical recommendations for best clinical outcomes with zirconia crowns.Types of studies This review article is a consolidation of several case studies, cohort studies and systematic reviews, as well as experimental and observational randomised control trials and other peer-reviewed articles.Results On reviewing, a concise list of clinical recommendations is generated, demonstrating that monolithic zirconia offers some clinical advantages over veneered zirconia crowns.Conclusion This review article discloses various clinical revelations and in-office recommendations for favourable usage of zirconia ceramic crowns that can lead to better patient outcomes and long-term clinical success rates., (© 2024. The aim of this study was to identify and quantify artifacts produced by commonly used dental restorative materials in both standard and high-resolution cone beam computed tomographic imaging. In this in vitro study, 25 different dental materials were placed in holes (3 mm in diameter × 2 mm thick) prepared in the center of 10 × 10-mm polymethyl methacrylate plates. The specimens, along with a control plate prepared with an unfilled hole, were scanned at standard and high resolutions. The gray values (GVs) of the specimens were measured at 1-, 2-, 4-, and 8-mm distances from the material surfaces, and in 8 different directions, resulting in 32 measurements per specimen. The absolute value of the difference (ΔGV) between the GV of each measurement point on the specimen disc and the GV of the corresponding point on the control disc was considered to be the number of artifacts at that point. The median ΔGV of each material was calculated, and the materials were then ranked in terms of artifact formation using the Kruskal-Wallis test. At standard resolution, the greatest numbers of artifacts were caused by AH 26 root canal sealer and Heraenium S nickel-chromium alloy, and the fewest were caused by Whitepost DC #3 glass fiber post and ChemFil Superior glass ionomer cement. At high resolution, the greatest numbers of artifacts were found in amalgam (admix; SDI) and Heraenium S, and the fewest in Whitepost DC and GC Initial enamel porcelain. The median ΔGV values at standard and high resolutions were 46.0 and 57.0, respectively. High and standard resolutions were significantly different in terms of artifact formation (P = 0.001; Wilcoxon test). AH 26 sealer was the only material that demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in artifact formation at high resolution compared with standard resolution (P = 0.05; Wilcoxon test). Background: The color adjustment potential of resin composites depends on the specific characteristics of the surrounding structures. The authors evaluated the influence of cavity wall thickness on CIEDE2000 color adjustment potential (CAP 00 ) of single-shade composites using the CIEDE2000 color difference (ΔE 00 ) formula., Methods: Two types of specimens were produced: single, using Vittra APS color DA3 (FGM Dental), Vittra APS Unique (VU) (FGM Dental), and Omnichroma (Tokuyama Dental) composites; and dual, using Vittra APS color DA3, but with cavity wall thicknesses of 3, 2, or 1 mm, restored with VU or Omnichroma. CIEL∗a∗b∗ color coordinates were obtained from digital photographs of the specimens at different locations, and ΔE 00 and CAP 00 were calculated. Statistical analysis included 2-way analysis of variance, Kruskal-Wallis, Holm-Sidak, Student-Newman-Keuls, Wilcoxon signed rank, and paired t tests (α = 5%)., Results: Cavity walls 1-mm-thick had higher ΔE 00 values and lower CAP 00 values, particularly for VU (P < .05). Restorations matched better with the control at the periphery than the central area (P < .001). Overall ΔE 00 means exceeded the color perceptibility threshold (ie, 0.8) and the acceptability threshold (ie, 1.8). Color differences (between center of restoration and control composite) were moderately unacceptable for 3-mm and 2-mm thicknesses and extremely unacceptable for 1-mm thickness. Both composites had a ΔE 00 color shift predominately determined by means of the lightness difference. Positive CAP 00 values were found for VU and Omnichroma., Conclusions: Wall thickness, especially at 1 mm, negatively impacted the color of single- shade composites. Objectives: With increasing life expectancy and improved preventive measures, teeth are retained longer, leading to a rise in prevalence of root caries lesions (RCL). However, little is known about how dentists manage this condition. The present survey aimed to evaluate the knowledge of Swiss dentists on decision making and management of RCL., Method: The survey evaluated dentists' knowledge, clinical routines, and demographics concerning RCL. Dentists were contacted via email and local newsletters, and 383 dentists from 25 (out of 26) cantons responded. Mann-Whitney U test, χ 2 test, intraclass correlation coefficients, Spearman correlation and Chi Square were used., Results: The dentists had a mean(SD) working experience of 22.5(12) years. Most dentists correctly classified an inactive (67%) and an active (81%)RCL. Although the inactive lesion did not call for restorative treatments, 61% of the dentist declared they would restore it. From the active lesion,83% would restore it. The invasive treatments leaned toward complete caries excavation with composite resin as preferred restorative material. There were significant correlations between material choice and expected success rates. Among the non-invasive options, oral hygiene instructions and (highly-)fluoridated toothpaste were favored. Most dentists declared having a recall system for such patients, with biannual follow-ups preferred. The dentists' place of education significantly influenced restorative decisions (p < 0.001), while participants' age (≥60years) impacted activity status (p = 0.048) and restorative decisions (p = 0.02)., Conclusion: Material preferences for non-invasive or invasive management varied greatly and there were minimal differences in the management of inactive or an active RCL. Moreover, diagnosing active lesions appeared easier than diagnosing inactive ones., Clinical Significance: Despite diverse material preferences for (non-)invasive treatments, a strong positive correlation existed between the chosen restorative material and its expected 2-year success rate.
