Networks of nanowires, nanotubes, and nanosheets are important for many applications in printed electronics. However, the network conductivity and mobility are usually limited by the resistance between the particles, often referred to as the junction resistance. Minimising the junction resistance has proven to be challenging, partly because it is difficult to measure. Here, we develop a simple model for electrical conduction in networks of 1D or 2D nanomaterials that allows us to extract junction and nanoparticle resistances from particle-size-dependent DC network resistivity data. We find junction resistances in porous networks to scale with nanoparticle resistivity and vary from 5 Ω for silver nanosheets to 24 GΩ for WS 2 nanosheets. Moreover, our model allows junction and nanoparticle resistances to be obtained simultaneously from AC impedance spectra of semiconducting nanosheet networks. Through our model, we use the impedance data to directly link the high mobility of aligned networks of electrochemically exfoliated MoS 2 nanosheets (≈ 7 cm 2 V -1 s -1 ) to low junction resistances of ∼2.3 MΩ. Temperature-dependent impedance measurements also allow us to comprehensively investigate transport mechanisms within the network and quantitatively differentiate intra-nanosheet phonon-limited bandlike transport from inter-nanosheet hopping., (© 2024. Natural processes and human activities both cause morphological changes in channels. Remote sensing products are often used to assess planform changes, but they tend to overlook vertical changes. However, considering both planform and vertical changes is crucial for a comprehensive evaluation of morphological changes. Using spatiotemporal aerial imagery and topographic data, remote sensing plays a vital role in evaluating channel morphological changes and flood-carrying capacity. This study aimed to investigate the morphological changes of a creek in an urban catchment using very high-resolution remote sensing products. In this study, we developed a new framework for investigating overall channel morphology change by employing very high-resolution aerial imagery and a LiDAR-derived digital elevation model (DEM). By digitizing channel boundaries using ArcGIS Pro 3.0, and analyzing various morphological parameters, erosion, and deposition patterns, we examined the impact of urban expansion and infrastructure development on channel adjustments. Channel adjustments have been performed in the case study catchment (Dry Creek, South Australia, Australia) due to urban expansion and development of infrastructure in the downstream reaches. Our findings revealed a significant southwest shift in the planform of the channel, with a maximum shift of 478 m and an average shift of 217 m since 1998. This alteration resulted in an increase in the sinuosity index reaching 1.2. Over the period from 2018 to 2022, the channel experienced a net deposition depth of 3.4 cm to 3.6 cm in downstream reaches. The annual deposition volume in the downstream reaches was 1963 m 3 , necessitating regular desilting to prevent channel capacity loss and flooding in the surrounding environment. This study also highlights the incremental growth of riparian vegetation within the channel, which affects surface roughness, channel slope, and carrying capacity. These findings provide a valuable baseline for future investigations into stream channel morphology changes and emphasize the importance of implementing appropriate measures such as desilting and vegetation management to mitigate deposition levels, reduce flood risks, and enhance the overall health and functionality of Dry Creek. Synthetic polymers are widely used in medical devices and implants where biocompatibility and mechanical strength are key enablers of emerging technologies. One concern that has not been widely studied is the potential of their microplastics (MPs) release. Here we studied the levels of MP debris released following 8-week in vitro tests on three typical polyglycolic acid (PGA) based absorbable sutures (PGA 100, PGA 90 and PGA 75) and two nonabsorbable sutures (polypropylene-PP and polyamide-PA) in simulated body fluid. The MP release levels ranked from PGA 100 > > PGA 90 > PGA 75 > > PP ∼ PA. A typical PGA 100 suture released 0.63 ± 0.087 million micro (MPs > 1 µm) and 1.96 ± 0.04 million nano (NPs, 200-1000 nm) plastic particles per centimeter. In contrast, no MPs were released from the nonabsorbable sutures under the same conditions. PGA that was co-blended with 10-25% L-lactide or epsilon-caprolactone resulted in a two orders of magnitude lower level of MP release. Raman spectroscopy is an indispensable tool in the analysis of microplastics smaller than 20 μm. However, due to its limitation, Raman spectroscopy may be incapable of effectively distinguishing microplastics from micro additive particles. To validate this hypothesis, we characterized and compared the Raman spectra of six typical slip additives with polyethylene and found that their hit quality index values (0.93-0.96) are much higher than the accepted threshold value (0.70) used to identify microplastics. To prevent this interference, a new protocol involving an alcohol treatment step was introduced to successfully eliminate additive particles and accurately identify microplastics. Tests using the new protocol showed that three typical plastic products (polyethylene pellets, polyethylene bottle caps, and polypropylene food containers) can simultaneously release microplastic-like additive particles and microplastics regardless of the plastic type, daily-use scenario, or service duration. Micro additive particles can also adsorb onto and modify the surfaces of microplastics in a manner that may potentially increase their health risks. This study not only reveals the hidden problem associated with the substantial interference of additive particles in microplastic detection but also provides a cost-effective method to eliminate this interference and a rigorous basis to quantify the risks associated with microplastic exposure.

Microplastic (MP) release from household plastic products has become a global concern due to the high recorded levels of microplastic and the direct risk of human exposure. However, the most widely used MP measurement protocol, which involves the use of deionized (DI) water, fails to account for the ions and particles present in real drinking water. In this paper, the influence of typical ions (Ca 2+ /HCO 3 - , Fe 3+ , Cu 2+ ) and particles (Fe 2 O 3 particles) on MP release was systematically investigated by conducting a 100-day study using plastic kettles. Surprisingly, after 40 days, all ions resulted in a greater than 89.0% reduction in MP release while Fe 2 O 3 particles showed no significant effect compared to the DI water control. The MP reduction efficiency ranking is Fe 3+ ≈ Cu 2+ > Ca 2+ /HCO 3 - > > Fe 2 O 3 particles ≈ DI water. Physical and chemical characterization using SEM-EDX, AFM, XPS and Raman spectroscopy confirmed Ca 2+ /HCO 3 - , Cu 2+ and Fe 3+ ions are transformed into passivating films of CaCO 3 , CuO, and Fe 2 O 3 , respectively, which are barriers to MP release. In contrast, there was no film formed when the plastic was exposed to Fe 2 O 3 particles. Studies also confirmed that films with different chemical compositions form naturally in kettles during real life due to the different ions present in local regional water supplies. All films identified in this study can substantially reduce the levels of MP release while withstanding the repeated adverse conditions associated with daily use. Electrically conductive composite materials are highlighted as a potential tech path toward future flexible devices for wearable health technologies. To be commercially viable, these materials must not only be mechanically soft, highly sensitive to deformation, and report a sustainable signal but also utilize manufacturing methods that facilitate large-scale production. An ideal candidate for these envisioned technologies is the viscous, electromechanically sensitive composite material g-putty. Inks based on g-putty here are shown to transform a commercial polymer foam into a sensitive strain sensing material through a simple, scalable soaking procedure. Foam composites reported here have sensitives as high as ∼20 in terms of compressive strain and ∼0.4 kPa -1 with respect to applied compressive stress; both values being comparable to the parent g-putty material. Through g-putty's self-adhering nature, the foams used acted as an elastic scaffolding that aided in overcoming many of the hysteresis effects associated with g-putty without the need for further encapsulation methods. From this, these composite foams were demonstrated to have a sustainable signal that allowed for effective impact and vital sign sensing.

Conductive and transparent metallic nanowire networks are regarded as promising alternatives to Indium-Tin-Oxides (ITOs) in emerging flexible next-generation technologies due to their prominent optoelectronic properties and low-cost fabrication. The performance of such systems closely relies on many geometrical, physical, and intrinsic properties of the nanowire materials as well as the device-layout. A comprehensive computational study is essential to model and quantify the device's optical and electrical responses prior to fabrication. Here, we present a computational toolkit that exploits the electro-optical specifications of distinct device-layouts, namely standard random nanowire network and transparent mesh pattern structures. The target materials for transparent conducting electrodes of this study are aluminium, gold, copper, and silver nanowires. We have examined a variety of tunable parameters including network area fraction, length to diameter aspect ratio, and nanowires angular orientations under different device designs. Moreover, the optical extinction efficiency factors of each material are estimated by two approaches: Mie light scattering theory and finite element method (FEM) algorithm implemented in COMSOL®Multiphysics software. We studied various nanowire network structures and calculated their respective figures of merit (optical transmittance versus sheet resistance) from which insights on the design of next-generation transparent conductor devices can be inferred.

Microplastics (MPs) are becoming a global concern due to the potential risk to human health. Case studies of plastic products (i.e., plastic single-use cups and kettles) indicate that MP release during daily use can be extremely high. Precisely determining the MP release level is a crucial step to identify and quantify the exposure source and assess/control the corresponding risks stemming from this exposure. Though protocols for measuring MP levels in marine or freshwater has been well developed, the conditions experienced by household plastic products can vary widely. Many plastic products are exposed to frequent high temperatures (up to 100 °C) and are cooled back to room temperature during daily use. It is therefore crucial to develop a sampling protocol that mimics the actual daily-use scenario for each particular product. This study focused on widely used polypropylene-based baby feeding bottles to develop a cost-effective protocol for MP release studies of many plastic products. The protocol developed here enables: 1) prevention of the potential contamination during sampling and detection; 2) realistic implementation of daily-use scenarios and accurate collection of the MPs released from baby feeding bottles based on WHO guidelines; and 3) cost-effective chemical determination and physical topography mapping of MPs released from baby feeding bottles. Based on this protocol, the recovery percentage using standard polystyrene MP (diameter of 2 µm) was 92.4-101.2% while the detected size was around 102.2% of the designed size. The protocol detailed here provides a reliable and cost-effective method for MP sample preparation and detection, which can substantially benefit future studies of MP release from plastic products.

There is an increasing demand for cooling cities because of its importance on human health and the quality of life in outdoor urban spaces. However, the development of methods in improving outdoor thermal comfort and zoning cities based on outdoor thermal comfort is still challenging. In this work, we propose a new approach to cities zoning from the lens of outdoor thermal comfort in the arid climate of the city of Mashhad, Iran, and investigate the impacts of urban form characteristics on pedestrian thermal comfort. The effects of complex urban form parameters including height to width (H/W) ratio, canyon orientation, tree canopy cover, and building surface materials on the thermal comfort of pedestrians were studied in the arid climate of Mashhad. Microclimate simulation and analysis is conducted in ENVI-met software, and ArcMap is used to calculate Mashhad urban heat islands. Path analysis in SPSS presents an urban form formulation, which predicts approximate outdoor thermal comfort condition in current and future urban context of Mashhad and other cities with the same climate. We finally demonstrate the use of our research method as an alternative method for all cities: urban heat island (UHI) zoning can be used as a substitute for urban form zonings based on outdoor thermal comfort, especially in large cities where data collection on urban form can be difficult due to limited time and resources.

Ge 1- x Sn x nanowires incorporating a large amount of Sn would be useful for mobility enhancement in nanoelectronic devices, a definitive transition to a direct bandgap for application in optoelectronic devices and to increase the efficiency of the GeSn-based photonic devices. Here we report the catalytic bottom-up fabrication of Ge 1- x Sn x nanowires with very high Sn incorporation ( x > 0.3). These nanowires are grown in supercritical toluene under high pressure (21 MPa). The introduction of high pressure in the vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) like growth regime resulted in a substantial increase of Sn incorporation in the nanowires, with a Sn content ranging between 10 and 35 atom %. The incorporation of Sn in the nanowires was found to be inversely related to nanowire diameter; a high Sn content of 35 atom % was achieved in very thin Ge 1- x Sn x nanowires with diameters close to 20 nm. Sn was found to be homogeneously distributed throughout the body of the nanowires, without apparent clustering or segregation. The large inclusion of Sn in the nanowires could be attributed to the nanowire growth kinetics and small nanowire diameters, resulting in increased solubility of Sn in Ge at the metastable liquid-solid interface under high pressure. Thick bark has been shown to protect trees from wildfires, but can it protect trees from an ambrosia beetle attack? We addressed this question by examining the distribution of holes of the invasive Kuroshio Shot Hole Borer (KSHB, Euwallacea kuroshio ; Coleoptera: Scolytinae) in the bark of Goodding's black willow ( Salix gooddingii ), one of the KSHB's most-preferred hosts. The study was conducted in the Tijuana River Valley, California, in 2016-17, during the peak of the KSHB infestation there. Using detailed measurements of bark samples cut from 27 infested trees, we tested and found support for two related hypotheses: (1) bark thickness influences KSHB attack densities and attack locations, i.e., the KSHB bores abundantly through thin bark and avoids boring through thick bark; and (2) bark thickness influences KSHB impacts, i.e., the KSHB causes more damage to thinner-barked trees than to thicker-barked trees. Our results indicate that thick bark protects trees because it limits the density of KSHB entry points and thereby limits internal structural damage to low, survivable levels. This is the first study to identify bark thickness as a factor that influences the density of KSHB-or any ambrosia beetle-in its host tree, and the first to link bark thickness to rates of host tree mortality., Competing Interests: There are no competing interests. Polypropylene-based products are commonly used for food preparation and storage, but their capacity to release microplastics is poorly understood. We investigated the potential exposure of infants to microplastics from consuming formula prepared in polypropylene (PP) infant feeding bottles (IFBs). Here, we show that PP IFBs release microplastics with values as high as 16,200,000 particles per litre. Scenario studies showed that PP IFB sterilization and exposure to high-temperature water significantly increase microplastic release. A 21-d test of PP IFBs showed periodic fluctuations in microplastic release. To estimate the potential global exposure to infants up to 12 months old, we surveyed 48 regions, finding values ranging from 14,600-4,550,000 particles per capita per day, depending on the region. We demonstrate that infant exposure to microplastics is higher than was previously recognized due to the prevalence of PP-based products used in formula preparation and highlight an urgent need to assess whether exposure to microplastics at these levels poses a risk to infant health., (© 2020. Brain-inspired, neuromorphic computing aims to address the growing computational complexity and power consumption in modern von-Neumann architectures. Progress in this area has been hindered due to the lack of hardware elements that can mimic neuronal/synaptic behavior which form the fundamental building blocks for spiking neural networks (SNNs). In this work, we leverage the short/long term memory effects due to the electron trapping events in an atomically thin channel transistor that mimic the exchange of neurotransmitters and emulate a synaptic response. Re-doped (n-type) and Nb-doped (p-type) molybdenum di-sulfide (MoS 2 ) field-effect transistors are examined using pulsed-gate measurements, which identify the time scales of electron trapping/de-trapping. The devices demonstrate promising trends for short/long term plasticity in the order of ms/minutes, respectively. Interestingly, pulse paired facilitation (PPF), which quantifies the short-term plasticity, reveal time constants (τ 1  = 27.4 ms, τ 2  = 725 ms) that closely match those from a biological synapse. Potentiation and depression measurements describe the ability of the synaptic device to traverse several analog states, where at least 50 conductance values are accessed using consecutive pulses of equal height and width. Finally, we demonstrate devices, which can emulate a well-known learning rule, spike time-dependent plasticity (STDP) which codifies the temporal sequence of pre- and post-synaptic neuronal firing into corresponding synaptic weights. These synaptic devices present significant advantages over iontronic counterparts and are envisioned to create new directions in the development of hardware for neuromorphic computing.

Graphene-based materials are of increasing interest for their potential use in biomedical applications. However, there is a need to gain a deeper understanding of how graphene modulates biological responses before moving towards clinical application. Innate immune training is a recently described phenomenon whereby cells of the innate immune system are capable of being programmed to generate an increased non-specific response upon subsequent challenge. This has been well established in the case of certain microbes and microbial products. However, little is known about the capacity of particulate materials, such as pristine graphene (pGr), to promote innate immune training. Here we report for the first time that while stimulation with pGr alone does not directly induce cytokine secretion by bone-marrow derived macrophages (BMDMs), it programs them for enhanced secretion of proinflammatory cytokines (IL-6, TNF-α) and a concomitant decrease in production of the regulatory cytokine, IL-10 after Toll-like receptor (TLR) ligand stimulation. This capacity of pGr to program cells for enhanced inflammatory responses could be overcome if the nanomaterial is incorporated in a collagen matrix. Our findings thus demonstrate the potential of graphene to modulate innate immunity over long timescales and have implications for the design and biomedical use of pGr-based materials.

The nature and direction of the hysteresis in memristive devices is critical to device operation and performance and the ability to realise their potential in neuromorphic applications. TiO 2 is a prototypical memristive device material and is known to show hysteresis loops with both clockwise switching and counter-clockwise switching and in many instances evidence of negative differential resistance (NDR) behaviour. Here we study the electrical response of a device composed of a single nanowire channel Au-Ti/TiO 2 /Ti-Au both in air and under vacuum and simulate the I - V characteristics in each case using the Schottky barrier and an ohmic-like transport memristive model which capture nonlinear diffusion and migration of ions within the wire. The dynamics of this complex charge conduction phenomenon is obtained by fitting the nonlinear ion-drift equations with the experimental data. Our experimental results support a nonlinear drift of oxygen vacancies acting as shallow donors under vacuum conditions. Simulations show that dopant diffusion under bias creates a depletion region along the channel which results in NDR behaviour, but it is overcome at higher applied bias due to oxygen vacancy generation at the anode. The model allows the motion of the charged dopants to be visualised during device operation in air and under vacuum and predicts the elimination of the NDR under low bias operation, in agreement with experiments., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Outdoor thermal comfort is influenced by people's climate expectations, perceptions and adaptation capacity. Varied individual response to comfortable or stressful thermal environments results in a deviation between actual outdoor thermal activity choices and those predicted by thermal comfort indices. This paper presents a passive activity observation (PAO) method for estimating contextual limits of outdoor thermal adaptation. The PAO method determines which thermal environment result in statistically meaningful changes may occur in outdoor activity patterns, and it estimates thresholds of outdoor thermal neutrality and limits of thermal adaptation in public space based on activity observation and microclimate field measurement. Applications of the PAO method have been demonstrated in Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney, where outdoor activities were analysed against outdoor thermal comfort indices between 2013 and 2014. Adjusted apparent temperature (aAT), adaptive predicted mean vote (aPMV), outdoor standard effective temperature (OUT_SET), physiological equivalent temperature (PET) and universal thermal comfort index (UTCI) are calculated from the PAO data. Using the PAO method, the high threshold of outdoor thermal neutrality was observed between 24 °C for optional activities and 34 °C for necessary activities (UTCI scale). Meanwhile, the ultimate limit of thermal adaptation in uncontrolled public spaces is estimated to be between 28 °C for social activities and 48 °C for necessary activities. Normalised results indicate that city-wide high thresholds for outdoor thermal neutrality vary from 25 °C in Melbourne to 26 °C in Sydney and 30 °C in Adelaide. The PAO method is a relatively fast and localised method for measuring limits of outdoor thermal adaptation and effectively informs urban design and policy making in the context of climate change.

Two-dimensional (2D) layered semiconductors have recently emerged as attractive building blocks for next-generation low-power nonvolatile memories. However, challenges remain in the controllable fabrication of bipolar resistive switching circuit components from these materials. Here, the experimental realization of lateral memtransistors from monolayer single-crystal molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) utilizing a focused helium ion beam is reported. Site-specific irradiation with the focused probe of a helium ion microscope creates a nanometer-scale defect-rich region, bisecting the MoS 2 lattice. The reversible drift of these defects in the applied electric field modulates the resistance of the channel, enabling versatile memristive functionality. The device can reliably retain its resistance ratios and set/reset biases for 1180 switching cycles. Long-term potentiation and depression with sharp habituation are demonstrated. This work establishes the feasibility of ion irradiation for controllable fabrication of 2D memristive devices with promising key performance parameters, such as low power consumption. The applicability of these devices for synaptic emulation may address the demands of future neuromorphic architectures.

In this study, an in vitro in vivo correlation (IVIVC) between Pb in vitro bioaccessibility (IVBA) and relative bioavailability (RBA) was explored to determine whether the efficacy of Pb immobilization in phosphate amended soils could be predicted using an in vitro approach. Mining/smelting impacted soil from Broken Hill, Australia (582-3536 mg/kg of Pb in the <250 μm soil particle fraction) was amended with Phosphoric Acid (PA), Mono Ammonium Phosphate (MAP) or Triple Super Phosphate (TSP) at Pb:P molar ratios of 1:1-1:5. Pb speciation in pre- and post-treated soil was assessed using X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS), Pb IVBA was measured using the Solubility Bioaccessibility Research Consortium (SBRC) assay (gastric and intestinal phases), and Pb RBA was determined in mice using blood Pb concentration as the bioavailability endpoint. XAS analysis revealed a 3.75-6.00 fold increase in the weighted % of Pb phosphates in soil containing >1000 mg/kg Pb while treatment effect ratios of 0.89-0.99 (SBRC-G), 0.09-0.71 (SBRC-I) and 0.27-0.80 (RBA) were observed in PA amended soil (Pb:P = 1:5). Although significant (p < 0.05) correlation were obtained between Pb RBA and IVBA (%) determined using SBRC-G (r = 0.64) and SBRC-I (r = 0.67), the strengths of the relationships were weak (r 2  = 0.41-0.45). Phase-change random access memory is a promising approach to non-volatile memory. However, the inability to secure consistent, reliable switching on a nanometre scale may limit its practical use for high density applications. Here, we report on the switching behaviour of PCRAM cells comprised of single crystalline Ge 9 Sb 1 Te 5 (GST) nanowires. We show that device switching is dominated by the contacts and does not result in a resistance change within the bulk of the wire. For the devices studied, the typical contact resistance was ∼30 kΩ, whereas the resistance of the GST channel was 1.8 kΩ. The applied voltage was predominately dropped across the passivating oxide on the surface of the GST nanowires, resulting in local resistive switching at the contacts and local power dissipation, which limited the endurance of the devices produced. The optimal device must balance low resistance contacts with a more resistive channel, to facilitate phase change switching within the nanowires. These results highlight the importance of contact formation on the switching properties in phase change devices and help guide the future design of more reliable neuromorphic devices.

Considerable attention has been drawn to the lead halide perovskites (LHPs) because of their outstanding optoelectronic characteristics. LHP nanosheets (NSs) grown from single crystalline lead halide possess advantages in device applications as they provide the possibility for control over morphology, composition, and crystallinity. Here, free-standing lead bromide (PbBr 2 ) single-crystalline NSs with sizes up to one centimeter are synthesized from solution. These NSs can be converted to LHP while maintaining the NS morphology. We demonstrate that these perovskite NSs can be processed directly for fabrication of photodetector and laser arrays on a large scale. This strategy will allow high-yield synthesis of large-size perovskite NSs for functional devices in an integrated photonics platform.

Networks of metallic nanowires have the potential to meet the needs of next-generation device technologies that require flexible transparent conductors. At present, there does not exist a first principles model capable of predicting the electro-optical performance of a nanowire network. Here we combine an electrical model derived from fundamental material properties and electrical equations with an optical model based on Mie theory scattering of light by small particles. This approach enables the generation of analogues for any nanowire network and then accurately predicts, without the use of fitting factors, the optical transmittance and sheet resistance of the transparent electrode. Predictions are validated using experimental data from the literature of networks comprised of a wide range of aspect ratios (nanowire length/diameter). The separation of the contributions of the material resistance and the junction resistance allows the effectiveness of post-deposition processing methods to be evaluated and provides a benchmark for the minimum attainable sheet resistance. The predictive power of this model enables a material-by-design approach, whereby suitable systems can be prescribed for targeted technology applications.

The Kuroshio Shot Hole Borer (KSHB, Euwallacea kuroshio ) and the Polyphagous Shot Hole Borer ( E. whitfordiodendrus ; Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) have recently invaded southern California and are attacking live trees in commercial agriculture groves, urban parks and native riparian forests. Among native forests the worst impacts observed to date have been in the Tijuana River Valley in south San Diego County, where approximately 30% of the native willows ( Salix spp.), or 120,000 trees, have died as a result of a KSHB infestation. This paper examines wood densities, wood moisture contents, KSHB infestation rates, and KSHB-induced mortality rates in two willow species ( Salix lasiolepis and S. gooddingii ) at sites near and far from sewage input. Comparisons were made on two spatial scales: broadly among sites within San Diego County; and locally among sites within the Tijuana River Valley. The results showed that, on average, willow trees growing closest to sewage pollution had significantly lower wood density, higher wood moisture content, higher KSHB infestation rates, and higher KSHB-induced willow mortality rates than those growing farther away. We present the Enriched Tree Hypothesis to explain the link between sewage pollution and KSHB impacts; it is as follows: (A) Riparian trees subject to nutrient enrichment from frequent sewage pollution grow quickly, and their fast growth results in wood of low density and high moisture content. If attacked by the KSHB, the trunks and branches of these nutrient-enriched trees provide an environment conducive to the fast growth of the symbiotic fungi upon which the KSHB feeds. With an abundant food supply, the KSHB population increases rapidly and the trees are heavily damaged by thousands of KSHB galleries in their trunks and branches. (B) Riparian trees not subject to frequent sewage pollution grow more slowly and have denser, drier wood. Conditions in their trunks and branches are not conducive to the fast growth of the KSHB's symbiotic fungi. The KSHB generally ignores, or has low abundances in, these slow-growing trees. This new hypothesis explains current patterns of KSHB impact in San Diego County and focuses attention on the important roles of the environment and preexisting conditions of trees in determining the extent of KSHB impact. It highlights the Tijuana River Valley as an unusual site due to high sewage inputs and predicts that the high KSHB-induced willow mortality seen there should not occur in other natural riparian habitats in southern California. Most importantly, by identifying sewage pollution (or nutrient enrichment) as a major risk factor for KSHB impacts, the hypothesis ratchets down the KSHB-threat level for most riparian sites in southern California and directs attention to other nutrient-enriched sites as those most at risk., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no competing interests. Molybdenum dioxide (MoO 2 ) is a layered material which shows promise for a number of applications in the electrochemical energy storage arena. Mostly studied as a bulk layered material, MoO 2 has not previously been exfoliated in large quantities. Here we demonstrate the liquid phase exfoliation of MoO 2 in the solvent isopropanol, yielding reasonable amounts of good quality nanosheets. However, we found that, when dispersed in isopropanol under ambient conditions, MoO 2 nanosheets are gradually oxidized to higher oxides such as MoO 3 over a period of days. Conversely, if the nanosheets are processed into dried films immediately after exfoliation, and before oxidation has had a chance to progress, the nanosheets are relatively stable under ambient conditions, remaining unoxidised unless the films are heated. We also found that MoO 2 nanosheets can be size selected by controlled centrifugation and show size-dependent optical properties. This allows us to propose spectroscopic metrics which allow concentration- and size-estimation from extinction spectra. Finally, we found that liquid-exfoliated MoO 2 nanosheets could be used to produce lithium ion battery anodes with capacities of up to 1140 mA h g -1 ., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts of interest to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Waste generation is linked to consumption both in households (Final demand) and in the supply chain. Gaining understanding into the driving forces that change of waste generation in the supply chain can contribute to solving issues of waste management. The environmentally-extend input-output model is an effective tool with which to investigate the relationship between economic activities and waste generation. In this paper structural decomposition analysis (SDA) is employed to analyse the determinants of changes of waste generation in Australian economy from 2007-2008 to 2013-2014. Empirical results indicate that the major determinant for the increase of waste generation was change in Final demand's overall level of economic activity. Changes in the production mix of Final demand (mix effect) was responsible for a decrease of waste generation in Australian economy during the period. The Manufacturing sector was found to have the highest waste generation intensity. Meaning that each million $AUD output of the Manufacturing sector resulted in the most amount of waste generation. In addition, technological change has contributed the largest waste generation effect for the Construction sector in 2011-2012. These findings suggest that Final demand, technological changes and sectoral changes are identified as the drivers of Australian waste generation historically. To reduce waste generation, policy must be targeted at altering behaviour of consumption and waste generation, and increasing innovation of new ecological technologies for Australian industry., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Nanoscale materials are frequently coated with surface stabilization layers during growth that prevent flocculation in solution and facilitate processing technologies such as ink-jet device printing. Here, we show that few-nanometer-thick stabilization layers typically used swell in the presence of certain solvents and impart significant stresses to the nanomaterial that remains even after the solvent has evaporated. Solvent swelling of the surface layer dramatically enhances nanomaterial-substrate adhesion via the collapse of the stabilization layer during solvent evaporation, preventing stress relaxation. We demonstrate the stress modulation of Ag, Au, and Si nanowires functionalised with surface polymers and surfactant layers and detect strain levels between 0.1 and 0.6% using atomic force microscopy mechanical measurement and Raman spectroscopy. Dry-transferred nanowires exhibit poor adhesion and show no evidence of incorporated stress but become stressed immediately following solvent exposure. Strain engineering is demonstrated by coating nanowires with few-nanometer-thick solvent-responsive polymer layers.

Extinction spectra of nanomaterial suspensions can be dominated by light scattering, hampering quantitative spectral analysis. No simple models exist for the wavelength-dependence of the scattering coefficients in suspensions of arbitrary-sized, high-aspect-ratio nanoparticles. Here, suspensions of BN, talc, GaS, Ni(OH) 2 , Mg(OH) 2 and Cu(OH) 2 nanosheets are used to explore non-resonant scattering in wide-bandgap 2D nanomaterials. Using an integrating sphere, scattering coefficient (σ) spectra were measured for a number of size-selected fractions for each nanosheet type. Generally, σ scales as a power-law with wavelength in the non-resonant regime: σ(λ)∝[λ/〈L〉] -m , where 〈L〉 is the mean nanosheet length. For all materials, the scattering exponent, m, forms a master-curve, transitioning from m = 4 to m = 2, as the characteristic nanosheet area increases, indicating a transition from Rayleigh to van der Hulst scattering. In addition, once material density and refractive index are factored out, the proportionality constant relating σ to [λ/〈L〉] -m , also forms a master-curve when plotted versus 〈L〉.

Nanowire networks are promising memristive architectures for neuromorphic applications due to their connectivity and neurosynaptic-like behaviours. Here, we demonstrate a self-similar scaling of the conductance of networks and the junctions that comprise them. We show this behavior is an emergent property of any junction-dominated network. A particular class of junctions naturally leads to the emergence of conductance plateaus and a "winner-takes-all" conducting path that spans the entire network, and which we show corresponds to the lowest-energy connectivity path. The memory stored in the conductance state is distributed across the network but encoded in specific connectivity pathways, similar to that found in biological systems. These results are expected to have important implications for development of neuromorphic devices based on reservoir computing.

The Household sector (HS) is not only the major cause of waste generation in industrial sectors, but also the same function as an industrial sector to generate waste. Current researches mainly focus on waste generation caused by the demand of the HS based on the environmentally-extend input-output (EEIO) models while the effect of the HS as an industrial sector on waste flow has not been analysed. In addition, there is uncertainty around the economic cost of waste management discussed in EEIO models due to the lack of the calculation of the cost of labor. We adjust waste supply-use table to analyse effects of the HS as an industrial sector on waste flow, resulting in closed waste supply-use table (CWSUT). The novelty of the method lies in a shift in the effect of the HS, from an exogenous factor to an endogenous factor. Results derived from Australian CWSUT in 2009-10 illustrate waste generation effects of intermediate sectors and the mixed waste flows of the HS. The definition of "intermediate sector" is that the sector consumes intermediate inputs from producing sectors and generates intermediate outputs to Final demand. They show that: (1) the Construction sector has the largest waste generation effects, in which the amount of masonry waste has accounted for the most direct and total effects of waste generation; (2) investigations regarding the HS in CWSUT can calculate the amount of direct and total waste generation, the monetary flow, and effects of the Income for the Household sector. We combine ambient (air) and ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) investigations together with density functional theory (DFT) calculations to gain a subnanometer insight into the structure and dynamic of two-dimensional (2D) surface-supported molecular networks. The planar tetraferrocene-porphyrin molecules employed in this study undergo spontaneous self-assembly via the formation of hydrogen bonded networks at the gold substrate-solution interface. To mimic liquid phase ambient deposition conditions, film formation was accomplished in UHV by electro-spraying a solution of the molecule in chloroform onto an Au(111) substrate, thereby providing access to the full spectroscopic capabilities of STM that can be hardly attained under ambient conditions. We show that molecular assembly on Au (111) is identical in films prepared under the two different conditions, and in good agreement with the theoretical predictions. However, we observe the contrast found for a given STM bias condition to be different in ambient and UHV conditions despite the similarity of the structures, and we propose possible origins of the different imaging contrast. This approach could be valuable for the thorough characterization of surface systems that involve large molecules and are prepared mainly in ambient conditions.

Optically transparent photodetectors are crucial in next-generation optoelectronic applications including smart windows and transparent image sensors. Designing photodetectors with high transparency, photoresponsivity, and robust mechanical flexibility remains a significant challenge, as is managing the inevitable trade-off between high transparency and strong photoresponse. Here we report a scalable method to produce flexible crystalline Si nanostructured wire (NW) networks fabricated from silicon-on-insulator (SOI) with seamless junctions and highly responsive porous Si segments that combine to deliver exceptional performance. These networks show high transparency (∼92% at 550 nm), broadband photodetection (350 to 950 nm) with excellent responsivity (25 A/W), optical response time (0.58 ms), and mechanical flexibility (1000 cycles). Temperature-dependent photocurrent measurements indicate the presence of localized electronic states in the porous Si segments, which play a crucial role in light harvesting and photocarrier generation. The scalable low-cost approach based on SOI has the potential to deliver new classes of flexible optoelectronic devices, including next-generation photodetectors and solar cells.

The use of graphene-based nanocomposites as electromechanical sensors has been broadly explored in recent times with a number of papers describing porous, foam-like composites. However, there are no reported foam-based materials that are capable of large dynamic compressive load measurements and very few studies on composite impact sensing. In this work, we describe a simple method of infusing commercially-available foams with pristine graphene to form conductive composites, which we refer to as G-foam. Displaying a strain-dependent electrical response, G-foam was found to be a reasonably effective pressure sensing material. More interestingly, G-foam is a sensitive impact-sensing material. Through the addition of various amounts of polymer filler, the mechanical properties of the composites can be tuned leading to the controllable variation of the impact sensing range. We have developed a simple model which quantitatively explains all our impact sensing data.

Precise tunability of electronic properties of two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials is a key goal of current research in this field of materials science. Chemical modification of layered transition metal dichalcogenides leads to the creation of heterostructures of low-dimensional variants of these materials. In particular, the effect of oxygen-containing plasma treatment on molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) has long been thought to be detrimental to the electrical performance of the material. We show that the mobility and conductivity of MoS 2 can be precisely controlled and improved by systematic exposure to oxygen/argon plasma and characterize the material using advanced spectroscopy and microscopy. Through complementary theoretical modeling, which confirms conductivity enhancement, we infer the role of a transient 2D substoichiometric phase of molybdenum trioxide (2D-MoO x ) in modulating the electronic behavior of the material. Deduction of the beneficial role of MoO x will serve to open the field to new approaches with regard to the tunability of 2D semiconductors by their low-dimensional oxides in nano-modified heterostructures.

Nonpolar resistive switching (RS), a combination of bipolar and unipolar RS, is demonstrated for the first time in a single nanowire (NW) system. Exploiting Ag@TiO 2 core-shell (CS) NWs synthesized by postgrowth shell formation, the switching mode is controlled by adjusting the current compliance effectively, tailoring the electrical polarity response. We demonstrate ON/OFF ratios of 10 5 and 10 7 for bipolar and unipolar modes, respectively. In the bipolar regime, retention times could be controlled up to 10 3 s, and in the unipolar mode, >10 6 s was recorded. We show how the unique dual-mode switching behavior is enabled by the defect-rich polycrystalline material structure of the TiO 2 shell and the interaction between the Ag core and the Ag electrodes. These results provide a foundation for engineering nonpolar RS behaviors for memory storage and neuromorphic applications in CSNW structures.

We used scanning tunneling microscopy to study low-angle grain boundaries at the surface of nearly planar copper nanocrystalline (111) films. The presence of grain boundaries and their emergence at the film surface create valleys composed of dissociated edge dislocations and ridges where partial dislocations have recombined. Geometric analysis and simulations indicated that valleys and ridges were created by an out-of-plane grain rotation driven by reduction of grain boundary energy. These results suggest that in general, it is impossible to form flat two-dimensional nanocrystalline films of copper and other metals exhibiting small stacking fault energies and/or large elastic anisotropy, which induce a large anisotropy in the dislocation-line energy., (Copyright © 2017 The Authors, some rights reserved; exclusive licensee American Association for the Advancement of Science. In Nepal, full-fledged environmental legislation was rare before the democratic constitution of 1990. The first law covering the environment and sustainability was the Environment Protection Act 1997. While the Solid Waste Act was introduced in 1987, the problem of solid waste management still surfaces in Kathmandu. In order to understand the bedrock of this unrelenting failure in solid waste management, the manuscript digs deeper into policy implementation by dissecting solid waste rules, environmental legislations, relevant local laws, and solid waste management practices in Kathmandu, Nepal. A very rich field study that included surveys, interviews, site visits, and literature review provided the basis for the article. The study shows that volumes of new Nepalese rules are crafted without effective enforcement of their predecessors and there is a frequent power struggle between local government bodies and central authority in implementing the codes and allocating resources in solid waste management. The study concludes that Kathmandu does not require any new instrument to address solid waste problems; instead, it needs creation of local resources, execution of local codes, and commitment from central government to allow free exercise of these policies.

Dual antiplatelet therapy with aspirin and clopidogrel is commonly used to prevent recurrent ischemic events in patients with cardiovascular disease. Whilst their effects on platelet reactivity are well documented, it is unclear, however, whether antiplatelet therapy inhibits platelet extracellular vesicle (EV) release. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of antiplatelet therapy on platelet EV formation and procoagulant activity. Blood samples from 10 healthy controls not receiving antiplatelet therapy were incubated in vitro with aspirin or a P2Y12 inhibitor (MeSAMP). Blood samples from 50 patients receiving long-term dual antiplatelet therapy and undergoing coronary angiography were also studied. Platelet reactivity was assessed by Multiplate™ impedance aggregometry. Platelet EV formation and procoagulant activity of pretreated and untreated blood samples in response to arachidonic acid (AA), adenosine diphosphate (ADP), ADP+PGE1, and thrombin receptor-activating peptide (TRAP) stimulation were assessed by flow cytometry and Procoag-PL assays, respectively. Incubation of normal platelets with aspirin significantly inhibited AA-induced platelet reactivity, EV formation, and procoagulant activity, whilst MeSAMP significantly inhibited platelet reactivity and EV formation in response to AA, ADP, and TRAP, but had minimal effect on procoagulant activity. Most patients receiving dual antiplatelet therapy showed an appropriate reduction in platelet reactivity in response to their treatment; however there was not complete inhibition of increased platelet and EV procoagulant activity in response to ADP, AA, or TRAP. In addition, we could not find any correlation between platelet reactivity and procoagulant activity in patients receiving dual antiplatelet therapy.

Heatwaves are the most dangerous natural hazard to health in Australia. The frequency and intensity of heatwaves will increase due to climate change and urban heat island effects in cities, aggravating the negative impacts of heatwaves. Two approaches exist to develop population heat stress resilience. Firstly, the most vulnerable social groups can be identified and public health services can prepare for the increased morbidity. Secondly, the population level of adaptation and the heat stress resistance of the built environment can be increased. The evaluation of these measures and their efficiencies has been fragmented across research disciplines. This study explored the relationships between the elements of heat stress resilience and their potential demographic and housing drivers and barriers. The responses of a representative online survey (N=393) about heat stress resilience at home and work from Adelaide, South Australia were analysed. The empirical findings demonstrate that heat stress resistant buildings increased adaptation capacity and decreased the number of health problems. Air-conditioning increased dependence upon it, limited passive adaptation and only people living in homes with whole-house air-conditioning had less health problems during heatwaves. Tenants and respondents with pre-existing health conditions were the most vulnerable, particularly as those with health conditions were not aware of their vulnerability. The introduction of an Energy Performance Certificate is proposed and discussed as an effective incentive to increase the heat stress resistance of and the general knowledge about the built environment., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier B.V. Motivated by numerous technological applications, there is current interest in the study of the conductive properties of networks made of randomly dispersed nanowires. The sheet resistance of such networks is normally calculated by numerically evaluating the conductance of a system of resistors but due to disorder and with so many variables to account for, calculations of this type are computationally demanding and may lack mathematical transparency. Here we establish the equivalence between the sheet resistance of disordered networks and that of a regular ordered network. Rather than through a fitting scheme, we provide a recipe to find the effective medium network that captures how the resistance of a nanowire network depends on several different parameters such as wire density, electrode size and electrode separation. Furthermore, the effective medium approach provides a simple way to distinguish the sheet resistance contribution of the junctions from that of the nanowires themselves. The contrast between these two contributions determines the potential to optimize the network performance for a particular application.

Here we have investigated the influence of the antenna group position on both the formation of chiral amphiphilic Eu(III) -based self-assemblies in CH3 CN solution and, on the ability to form monolayers on the surface of quartz substrates using the Langmuir-Blodgett technique, by changing from the 1-naphthyl (2(R), 2(S)) to the 2-naphthyl (1(R), 1(S)) position. The evaluation of binding constants of the self- assemblies in CH3 CN solution was achieved using conventional techniques such as UV/Visible and luminescence spectroscopies along with more specific circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. The binding constants obtained for EuL, EuL2 and EuL3 species in the case of 2-naphthyl derivatives were comparable to those obtained for 1-naphthyl derivatives. The analysis of the changes in the CD spectra of 1(R) and 1(S) upon addition of Eu(III) not only allowed us to evaluate the values of the binding constants but the resulting recalculated spectra may also be used as fingerprints for assignment of the chiral self-assembly species formed in solution. Background: Technological advancements in newer-generation catheterisation laboratories may reduce patient and occupational radiation exposure., Methods: We compared fluoroscopy time and dose-area product (DAP) between a Philips Allura X-PER FD20 and Siemens Artis Zeego Hybrid systems for 47 single-vessel percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) and 35 transcatheter aortic valve implantations (21 Corevalve, 14 Edwards Sapien TAVI) using the FD20, versus 30 PCI and 28 TAVI (15 Corevalve, 13 Sapien) with the Zeego over a 24-month period., Results: Multivariate analysis revealed that, adjusting for patient weight and fluoroscopy time, DAP (median, interquartile range) was 26% lower for PCI with the Zeego than the FD20 [55.6 (27.0-91.5) vs 77.6 (51.2-129.1) Gy.cm(2), P=0.03)] and using tomographic imaging with the Zeego did not increase DAP for TAVI procedures [98.1 (65.9-136.6) vs 112.4 (64.9-156.2) Gy.cm(2) (P=NS). Although fluoroscopy times were longer for TAVI procedures than PCI with both systems (23.5-24.4 vs 7.3-9.2mins, p<0.0001), there was a significant difference in DAP between PCI and combined TAVI with the Zeego (55.6 vs 112.4Gy.cm(2), P<0.006) but not with the FD20 (77.6 vs 98.1Gy.cm(2), P=NS)., Conclusion: Specific dose-reducing features of the new-generation system reduced DAP more for PCI than TAVI, as valve replacement procedures use additional cine-acquisition not necessary for PCI., (Copyright © 2016 Australian and New Zealand Society of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgeons (ANZSCTS) and the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSANZ). The Tijuana River Valley is the first natural habitat in California to be substantially invaded by the Kuroshio Shot Hole Borer (KSHB, Euwallacea sp.), an ambrosia beetle native to Southeast Asia. This paper documents the distribution of the KSHB in the riparian vegetation in the valley and assesses the damage done to the vegetation as of early 2016, approximately six months after the beetle was first observed in the valley. I divided the riparian habitats into 29 survey units so that the vegetation within each unit was relatively homogenous in terms of plant species composition, age and density. From a random point within each unit, I examined approximately 60 individuals of the dominant plant species for evidence of KSHB infestation and evidence of major damage such as limb breakage. In the 22 forested units,I examined the dominant arroyo and black willows (Salix lasiolepis Benth. and S. gooddingii C.R. Ball), and in the seven scrub units, I examined mule fat (Baccharis salicifolia (Ruiz & Pav.) Pers.). Evidence of KSHB infestation was found in 25 of the 29 units. In the forest units, infestation rates ranged from 0 to 100% and were high (>60%) in 16 of the units. In the scrub units, infestation rates ranged from 0 to 33%. Infestation rates were significantly correlated with the wetness of a unit; wetter units had higher infestation rates. Evidence of major physical damage was found in 24 units, and dense stands of willows were reduced to broken trunks in several areas. Overall, I estimated that more than 280,000 (70%) of the willows in the valley were infested, and more than 140,000 had suffered major limb damage. In addition, I recorded evidence of KSHB infestation in the other common plant species in the valley; of the 23 species examined, 14 showed evidence of beetle attack. The four species with the highest rates of infestation were native trees in the Salicaceae family. The three species considered to be the worst invasive plants in the valley, Ricinus communis L., Tamarix ramosissima Ledeb. and Arundo donax L., had low rates of infestation. Several findings from this study have significance for resource managers: (1) the KSHB attack caused extensive mortality of trees soon after being first discovered so, if managers are to control the spread of the beetle, they will need to develop an effective early detection and rapid response program; (2) infestation rates were highest in units that were wet, so resource managers trying to detect the beetle in other areas should thoroughly search trees near water, particularly nutrient-enriched water; (3) the infestation appears to be a novel form of disturbance, and the affected forests may need special management actions in order to recover; and (4) the infestation has altered the structure of the forest canopy, and this is likely to promote the growth of invasive plant species that were relatively inconspicuous in the forests prior to the beetle attack but will now need more attention.

We demonstrate templating of functional materials with unexpected and intricate micro- and nanostructures by controlling the condensation, packing, and evaporation of water droplets on a polymer solution. Spontaneous evaporation of a polymer solution induces cooling of the liquid surface and water microdroplet condensation from the ambient vapor. These droplets pack together and act as a template to imprint an entangled polymer film. This breath figure (BF) phenomenon is an example of self-organization that involves the long-range ordering of droplets. Equilibrium-based analysis provides many insights into contact angles and drop stability of individual drops, but the BF phenomenon remains poorly understood thus far, preventing translation to real applications. Here we investigate the dynamics of this phenomenon to separate out the competing influences and then introduce a modulation scheme to ultimately manipulate the water vapor-liquid equilibrium independently from the solvent evaporation. This approach to BF control provides insights into the mechanism, a rationale for microstructure design, and evidence for the benefits of dynamical control of self-organization systems. We finally present dramatically different porous architectures from this approach reminiscent of microscale Petri dishes, conical flasks, and test tubes.

Although heatwave-related excess mortality and morbidity have been widely studied, results are not comparable spatially and often longitudinally because of different heatwave definitions applied. The excess heat factor (EHF) quantifies heatwave intensity relative to the local climate, enabling cross-regional comparisons. Previous studies have shown a strong relationship between EHFs and daily mortality during severe heatwaves. An extensive study about the relationship between EHFs and daily morbidity compared to the currently applied heatwave thresholds in Adelaide has not yet been undertaken. This paper analyzes the association of EHFs with daily morbidity between 2008 and 2014 in the Adelaide metropolitan region, South Australia, and probes three different approaches to calculate the EHF. The EHF is found to differentiate days with heatwave-related excess morbidity significantly better than other widely used weather parameters, resulting in fewer days per year with heatwave alerts than using previously proposed methods. The volume of excess morbidity can be predicted by the EHF more reliably with a model proposed for the SA Ambulance Service to support their heatwave preparation plan.

Networks of silver nanowires appear set to replace expensive indium tin oxide as the transparent conducting electrode material in next generation devices. The success of this approach depends on optimizing the material conductivity, which until now has largely focused on minimizing the junction resistance between wires. However, there have been no detailed reports on what the junction resistance is, nor is there a known benchmark for the minimum attainable sheet resistance of an optimized network. In this paper, we present junction resistance measurements of individual silver nanowire junctions, producing for the first time a distribution of junction resistance values and conclusively demonstrating that the junction contribution to the overall resistance can be reduced beyond that of the wires through standard processing techniques. We find that this distribution shows the presence of a small percentage (6%) of high-resistance junctions, and we show how these may impact the performance of network-based materials. Finally, through combining experiment with a rigorous model, we demonstrate the important role played by the network skeleton and the specific connectivity of the network in determining network performance.

Despite significant advances, the molecular identity of the cytotoxic species populated during in vivo amyloid formation crucial for the understanding of neurodegenerative disorders is yet to be revealed. In this study lysozyme prefibrillar oligomers and fibrils in both mature and sonicated states have been isolated through an optimized ultrafiltration/ultracentrifugation method and characterized with various optical spectroscopic techniques, atomic force microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. We examined their level and mode of toxicity on rat pheochromocytoma (PC12) cells in both differentiated and undifferentiated states. We find that oligomers and fibrils display cytotoxic capabilities toward cultured cells in vitro, with oligomers producing elevated levels of cellular injury toward undifferentiated PC12 cells (PC12(undiff)). Furthermore, dual flow cytometry staining experiments demonstrate that the oligomers and mature fibrils induce divergent cellular death pathways (apoptosis and secondary necrosis, respectively) in these PC12 cells. We have also shown that oligomers but not sonicated mature fibrils inhibit hippocampal long term potentiation, a form of synaptic plasticity implicated in learning and memory, in vivo. We conclude that our in vitro and in vivo findings confer a level of resistance toward amyloid fibrils, and that the PC 12-based comparative cytotoxicity assay can provide insights into toxicity differences between differently aggregated protein species., (© 2015 by The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Inc.)

In this study, previously established arsenic (As) in vivo-in vitro correlations (IVIVC) were assessed for their validity using an independent data set comprising As relative bioavailability (RBA) and bioaccessibility values for 13 herbicide- and mine-impacted soils. The validation process established the correlation between As RBA (swine model) and bioaccessibility (five in vitro assays), determined whether correlations differed significantly from previous relationships and assessed model bias and error. The capacity of in vitro assays to predict As RBA was demonstrated by the strength of IVIVC; goodness of fit ranged from 0.53 (DIN-I) to 0.74 (UBM-I). When compared to previous IVIVC (Juhasz et al. Environ. Sci. Technol. 2009 , 43 , 9487 ; Juhasz et al. J. Hazard. Mater. 2011 , 197 , 161 ), there was no significant difference (P < 0.01) in the slope and y-intercept for IVG-G, UBM-G, and UBM-I indicating the consistency of these assays for predicting As RBA. However, variability in model bias and prediction error was observed with significantly lower (P < 0.01) error determined for IVG-G suggesting that As RBA predictions using IVG-G may be more robust compared to UBM-G and UBM-I. In contrast, differences in the slope and/or y-intercept were observed for SBRC-I, IVG-I, PBET-G, PBET-I, DIN-G, and DIN-I suggesting that these methodologies may not be suitable for predicting As RBA.

The tripodal terpyridine ligand, L, forms 1D helical supramolecular polymers/gels in H2O-CH3OH solution mediated through hydrogen bonding and π-π interactions. These gels further cross-link into 3D supramolecular metallogels with a range of metal ions (M) such as Fe(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), and Ru(III); the cross-linking resulting in the formation of colored or colorless gels. The fibrous morphology of these gels was confirmed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM); while the self-assembly processes between L and M were investigated by absorbance and emission spectroscopy from which their binding constants were determined by using a nonlinear regression analysis.

In this work, we introduce a combined experimental and computational approach to describe the conductivity of metallic nanowire networks. Due to their highly disordered nature, these materials are typically described by simplified models in which network junctions control the overall conductivity. Here, we introduce a combined experimental and simulation approach that involves a wire-by-wire junction-by-junction simulation of an actual network. Rather than dealing with computer-generated networks, we use a computational approach that captures the precise spatial distribution of wires from an SEM analysis of a real network. In this way, we fully account for all geometric aspects of the network, i.e. for the properties of the junctions and wire segments. Our model predicts characteristic junction resistances that are smaller than those found by earlier simplified models. The model outputs characteristic values that depend on the detailed connectivity of the network, which can be used to compare the performance of different networks and to predict the optimum performance of any network and its scope for improvement.
