Recent interest in potassium-doped p -terphenyl has been fueled by reports of superconductivity at T c values surprisingly high for organic compounds. Despite these interesting properties, studies of the structure-function relationships within these materials have been scarce. Here, we isolate a phase-pure crystal of potassium-doped p -terphenyl: [K( 222 )] 2 [ p -terphenyl 3 ]. Emerging antiferromagnetism in the anisotropic structure is studied in depth by magnetometry and electron spin resonance. Combining these experimental results with density functional theory calculations, we describe the antiferromagnetic coupling in this system that occurs in all 3 crystallographic directions. The strongest coupling was found along the ends of the terphenyls, where the additional electron on neighboring p -terphenyls antiferromagnetically couple. This delocalized bonding interaction is reminiscent of the doubly degenerate resonance structure depiction of polyacetylene. These findings hint toward magnetic fluctuation-induced superconductivity in potassium-doped p -terphenyl, which has a close analogy with high T c cuprate superconductors. The new approach described here is very versatile as shown by the preparation of two additional salts through systematic changing of the building blocks.

The exotic properties of quantum spin liquids (QSLs) have continually been of interest since Anderson's 1973 ground-breaking idea. Geometrical frustration, quantum fluctuations, and low dimensionality are the most often evoked material's characteristics that favor the long-range fluctuating spin state without freezing into an ordered magnet or a spin glass at low temperatures. Among the few known QSL candidates, organic crystals have the advantage of having rich chemistry capable of finely tuning their microscopic parameters. Here, we demonstrate the emergence of a QSL state in [EDT-TTF-CONH 2 ] 2 + [[Formula: see text]] (EDT-BCO), where the EDT molecules with spin-1/2 on a triangular lattice form layers which are separated by a sublattice of BCO molecular rotors. By several magnetic measurements, we show that the subtle random potential of frozen BCO Brownian rotors suppresses magnetic order down to the lowest temperatures. We report a study where Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics simulations and variable-temperature (30-300 K) 1 H spin-lattice relaxation time experiments nicely complement each other to characterize the dynamics within a set of four crystalline 1,4-diethynylbicyclo[2.2.2]octane (BCO) rotors assembled in the metal-organic rotor, {Li + 4 ( - CO 2 -Ph-BCO-py) 4 (H 2 O) 8 }·2DMF. The remarkable finding of this work is that, despite the individual rotational barriers of four rotors being indiscernible and superimposed in a broad relaxation process, we were able to unravel a strongly interrelated series of rotational motions involving disrotatory and conrotatory motions in pairs as well as rotational steps of single rotators, all three processes with similar, sizeable rotational barriers of 6 kcal mol -1 . It is noteworthy that DFT molecular dynamics simulations and variable-temperature (30-300 K) proton spin-lattice relaxation time experiments deliver the same high value for the rotational barriers stressing the potential of the combined use of the two techniques in understanding rotational motion at the nanoscale.

Superatomic crystals are composed of discrete modular clusters that emulate the role of atoms in traditional atomic solids. Owing to their unique hierarchical structures, these materials are promising candidates to host exotic phenomena, such as doping-induced superconductivity and magnetism. Low-dimensional superatomic crystals in particular hold great potential as electronic components in nanocircuits, but the impact of doping in such compounds remains unexplored. Here we report the electrical transport properties of Re 6 Se 8 Cl 2 , a two-dimensional superatomic semiconductor. We find that this compound can be n-doped in situ through Cl dissociation, drastically altering the transport behavior from semiconducting to metallic and giving rise to superconductivity with a critical temperature of ∼8 K and upper critical field exceeding 30 T. This work is the first example of superconductivity in a van der Waals superatomic crystal; more broadly, it establishes a new chemical strategy to manipulate the electronic properties of van der Waals materials with labile ligands.

Surfaces play a key role in determining material properties, and their importance is further magnified in the two-dimensional (2D) limit. Though monolayers are entirely composed of surfaces, there is no chemical approach to covalently address them without breaking intralayer bond. Here, we describe a 2D semiconductor that offers two unique features among 2D materials: structural hierarchy within the monolayer and surface reactive sites that enable functionalization. The 2D semiconductor is composed of a single layer of strongly interconnected Re 6 Se 8 clusters arranged in an oblique lattice capped by substitutionally labile Cl atoms. We show that a simple ligand substitution strategy borrowed from traditional coordination chemistry can be used to modify the surface of the 2D material while preserving its internal structure. The potential generality of this approach establishes a promising route toward multifunctional 2D materials with tunable physical and chemical properties and may also facilitate better electrical top contact to 2D semiconductors.

Here we present a study where what can be seen as a static modulation wave encompassing four successive arrays of interacting iodine atoms in crystalline 1,4-Bis((4'-(iodoethynyl)phenyl) ethynyl)bicyclo[2,2,2]octane rotors changes the structure from one-half molecule to three-and-a-half molecules in the asymmetric unit below a phase transition at 105 K. The remarkable finding is that the total 1 H spin-lattice relaxation rate, T 1 -1 , of unprecedented complexity to date in molecular rotors, is the weighted sum of the relaxation rates of the four contributing rotors relaxation rates, each with distinguishable exchange frequencies reflecting Arrhenius parameters with different activation barriers ( E a ) and attempt frequencies (τ o -1 ). This allows us to show in tandem with rotor-environment interaction energy calculations how the dynamics of molecular rotors are able to decode structural information from their surroundings with remarkable nanoscale precision.

Structural complexity is of fundamental interest in materials science because it often results in unique physical properties and functions. Founded on this idea, the field of solid state chemistry has a long history and continues to be highly active, with new compounds discovered daily. By contrast, the area of two-dimensional (2D) materials is young, but its expansion, although rapid, is limited by a severe lack of structural diversity and complexity. Here, we report a novel 2D semiconductor with a hierarchical structure composed of covalently linked Re 6 Se 8 clusters. The material, a 2D structural analogue of the Chevrel phase, is prepared via mechanical exfoliation of the van der Waals solid Re 6 Se 8 Cl 2 . Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy, photoluminescence and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, and first-principles calculations, we determine the electronic bandgap (1.58 eV), optical bandgap (indirect, 1.48 eV), and exciton binding energy (100 meV) of the material. The latter is consistent with the partially 2D nature of the exciton. Re 6 Se 8 Cl 2 is the first member of a new family of 2D semiconductors whose structure is built from superatomic building blocks instead of simply atoms; such structures will expand the conceptual design space for 2D materials research.

An asymmetric mechanism for correlated motion occurring in noninteracting pairs of adjacent orthogonal 1,4-bis(carboxyethynyl)bicyclo[1.1.1]pentane (BCP) rotators 1 in the solid state is unraveled and shown to play an important role in understanding the dynamics in the crystalline rotor, Bu 4 N + [ 1 - ]·H 2 O. Single crystal X-ray diffraction and calculation of rotor-rotor interaction energies combined with variable-temperature, variable-field 1 H spin-lattice relaxation experiments led to the identification and microscopic rationalization of two distinct relaxation processes., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest.

Here we disclose a simple route to nanoscopic 2D woven structures reminiscent of the methods used to produce macroscopic textiles. We find that the same principles used in macroscopic weaving can be applied on the nanoscale to create two-dimensional molecular cloth from polymeric strands, a molecular thread. The molecular thread is composed of Co 6 Se 8 (PEt 3 ) 4 L 2 superatoms that are bridged with L = benzene bis-1,4-isonitrile to form polymer strands. As the superatoms that make up the polymer chain are electrochemically oxidized, they are electrostatically templated by a nanoscale anion, the tetragonal Lindqvist polyoxometalate Mo 6 O 19 2- . The tetragonal symmetry of the dianionic template creates a nanoscale version of the box weave. The crossing points in the weave feature π-stacking of the bridging linker. By examining the steps in the weaving process with single crystal X-ray diffraction, we find that the degree of polymerization at the crossing points is crucial in the cloth formation. 2D nanoscale cloth will provide access to a new generation of smart, multifunctional materials, coatings, and surfaces.

Asymmetric rotators with a 1,4-bis(ethynyl)bicyclo[2.2.2]octane (BCO) core are needed for engineering crystalline arrays of functional molecular rotors. Their synthesis uses carbinol, 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol, as a protecting group because of its polar character and its ability to sustain orthogonal functionalization with the further advantage of being readily removed. The synthesis in good yields of unprecedented asymmetric rotors and polyrotors demonstrates the efficiency of this strategy.

We have investigated the infrared spectra of the quarter-filled charge-ordered insulators δ-(EDT-TTF-CONMe2)2X (X= AsF6, Br) along all three crystallographic directions in the temperature range from 300 to 10 K. DFT-assisted normal mode analysis of the neutral and ionic EDT-TTF-CONMe2 molecule allows us to assign the experimentally observed intramolecular modes and to obtain relevant information on the charge ordering and intramolecular interactions. From frequencies of charge-sensitive vibrations we deduce that the charge-ordered state is already present at room temperature and does not change on cooling, in agreement with previous NMR measurements. The spectra taken along the stacking direction clearly show features of vibrational overtones excited due to the anharmonic electronic molecule potential caused by the large charge disproportionation between the molecular sites. The shift of certain vibrational modes indicates the onset of the structural transition below 200 K.

Unconventional superconductivity typically occurs in materials in which a small change of a parameter such as bandwidth or doping leads to antiferromagnetic or Mott insulating phases. As such competing phases are approached, the properties of the superconductor often become increasingly exotic. For example, in organic superconductors and underdoped high-T(c) cuprate superconductors a fluctuating superconducting state persists to temperatures significantly above T(c). By studying alloys of quasi-two-dimensional organic molecular metals in the κ-(BEDT-TTF)₂X family, we reveal how the Nernst effect, a sensitive probe of superconducting phase fluctuations, evolves in the regime of extreme Mott criticality. We find strong evidence that, as the phase diagram is traversed through superconductivity towards the Mott state, the temperature scale for superconducting fluctuations increases dramatically, eventually approaching the temperature at which quasiparticles become identifiable at all.

The rod-like molecule bis((4-(4-pyridyl)ethynyl)bicyclo[2.2.2]oct-1-yl)buta-1,3-diyne, 1, contains two 1,4-bis(ethynyl)bicyclo[2.2.2]octane (BCO) chiral rotators linked by a diyne fragment and self-assembles in a one-dimensional, monoclinic C2/c centrosymmetric structure where two equilibrium positions with large occupancy imbalance (88% versus 12%) are identified on a single rotor site. Combining variable-temperature (70-300 K) proton spin-lattice relaxation, (1)H T1(-1), at two different (1)H Larmor frequencies (55 and 210 MHz) and DFT calculations of rotational barriers, we were able to assign two types of Brownian rotators with different activation energies, 1.85 and 6.1 kcal mol(-1), to the two (1)H spin-lattice relaxation processes on the single rotor site. On the basis of DFT calculations, the low-energy process has been assigned to adjacent rotors in a well-correlated synchronous motion, whereas the high-energy process is the manifestation of an abrupt change in their kinematics once two blades of adjacent rotors are seen to rub together. Although crystals of 1 should be second harmonic inactive, a large second-order optical response is recorded when the electric field oscillates in a direction parallel to the unique rotor axle director. We conclude that conformational mutations by torsional interconversion of the three blades of the BCO units break space-inversion symmetry in sequences of mutamers in dynamic equilibrium in the crystal in domains at a mesoscopic scale comparable with the wavelength of light used. A control experiment was performed with a crystalline film of a similar tetrayne molecule, 1,4-bis(3-((trimethylsilyl)ethynyl)bicyclo[1.1.1]pent-1-yl)buta-1,3-diyne, whose bicyclopentane units can rotate but are achiral and produce no second-order optical response.

(EDT-TTF-CONH2)6[Re6Se8(CN)6] is a molecular solid with R3 space group symmetry and has the remarkable feature of exhibiting hybrid donor layers with a kagome topology which sustain metallic conductivity. We report a detailed study of the structural evolution of the system as a function of temperature and pressure. This rhombohedral phase is maintained on cooling down to 220 K or up to 0.7 GPa pressure, beyond which a symmetry-breaking transition to a triclinic P1 phase drives a metal to insulator transition. Band structures calculated from the structural data lead to a clear description of the effects of temperature and pressure on the structural and electronic properties of this system. Linear energy dispersion is calculated at the zero-gap Fermi level where valence and conduction bands touch for the rhombohedral phase. (EDT-TTF-CONH2)6[Re6Se8(CN)6] thus exhibits a regular (right circular) Dirac-cone like that of graphene at the Fermi level, which has not been reported previously in a molecular solid. The Dirac-cone is robust over the stability region of the rhombohedral phase, and may result in exotic electronic transport and optical properties.

Combining recent concepts from the fields of molecular conductivity and molecular machinery we set out to design a crystalline molecular conductor that also possesses a molecular rotor. We report on the structures, electronic and physical properties, and dynamics of two solids with a common 1,4-bis(carboxyethynyl)bicyclo[2.2.2]octane (BABCO) functional rotor. One, [nBu(4)N(+)](2)[BABCO][BABCO(-)](2), is a colorless insulator where the dicarboxylic acid cocrystallizes with two of its monoanionic conjugated bases. The other is self-assembled by electrocrystallization in the form of black, shiny needles, with highly conducting molecular slabs of (EDT-TTF-CONH(2))(2)(+) (EDT-TTF = ethylenedithiotetrathiafulvalene) and anionic [BABCO(-)] rotors. Using variable-temperature (5-300 K) proton spin-lattice relaxation, (1)H T(1)(-1), we were able to assign two types of Brownian rotators in [nBu(4)N(+)](2)[BABCO][BABCO(-)](2). We showed that neutral BABCO groups have a rotational frequency of 120 GHz at 300 K with a rotational barrier of 2.03 kcal mol(-1). Rotors on the BABCO(-) sites experience stochastic 32 GHz jumps at the same temperature over a rotational barrier of 2.72 kcal mol(-1). In contrast, the BABCO(-) rotors within the highly conducting crystals of (EDT-TTF-CONH(2))(2)(+)[BABCO(-)] are essentially "braked" at room temperature. Notably, these crystals possess a conductivity of 5 S cm(-1) at 1 bar, which increases rapidly with pressure up to 50 S cm(-1) at 11.5 kbar. Two regimes with different activation energies E(a) for the resistivity (180 K above 50 and 400 K below) are observed at ambient pressure; a metallic state is stabilized at ca. 8 kbar, and an insulating ground state remains below 50 K at all pressures. We discuss two likely channels by which the motion of the rotors might become slowed down in the highly conducting solid. One is defined as a low-velocity viscous regime inherent to a noncovalent, physical coupling induced by the cooperativity between five C(sp3)-H···O hydrogen bonds engaging any rotor and five BABCO units in its environment. The rotational barrier calculated with the effect of this set of hydrogen bonds amounts to 7.3 kcal mol(-1). Another is quantum dissipation, a phenomenon addressing the difference of dynamics of the rotors in the two solids with different electrical properties, by which the large number of degrees of freedom of the low dimensional electron gas may serve as a bath for the dissipation of the energy of the rotor motion, the two systems being coupled by the Coulomb interaction between the charges of the rotors (local moments and induced dipoles) and the charges of the carriers.

A methodology is proposed to provide direct access in good yields to peptide residues-appended perylenediimides PDI-(Cl(4))-[Gly-Ala(OEt)](2), 2a, PDI-(Cl(4))-[Gly-Val(OEt)](2), 2b and PDI-(Cl(4))-[Gly-Gly(OEt)](2), 2c from a generic perylenediimide (PDI) platform symmetrically functionalized with carboxylic acids at the imide sites, PDI-(Cl(4))-[Gly(OH)](2), 1. The latter is obtained in good purity by a non classical two-steps route avoiding the many, notoriously cumbersome successive chromatography steps typical of PDI chemistry, and including a single final purification allowing to crystallize the water soluble pure diacid 1, of great interest in its own right for further developments in a variety of fields. Then, the synthesis, crystallization and analysis of the crystal structures of 2a and 2b reveal a common pattern of self-assembly of the outer peptide residues based on collections of parallel N-H···O peptidic hydrogen bonds running alongside stacks where the constraints imposed upon on the inner PDI skeletons by long range interaction of these parallel electric dipoles reduce the dihedral angles around the bay regions by as much as 11% down to 32°.

As a point of entry to investigate the potential of halogen-bonding interactions in the construction of functional materials and crystalline molecular machines, samples of 1,4-bis(iodoethynyl)bicyclo[2.2.2]octane (BIBCO) were synthesized and crystallized. Knowing that halogen-bonding interactions are common between electron-rich acetylenic carbons and electron-deficient iodines, it was expected that the BIBCO rotors would be an ideal platform to investigate the formation of a crystalline array of molecular rotors. Variable temperature single crystal X-ray crystallography established the presence of a halogen-bonded network, characterized by lamellarly ordered layers of crystallographically unique BIBCO rotors, which undergo a reversible monoclinic-to-triclinic phase transition at 110 K. In order to elucidate the rotational frequencies and the activation parameters of the BIBCO molecular rotors, variable-temperature (1)H wide-line and (13)C cross-polarization/magic-angle spinning solid-state NMR experiments were performed at temperatures between 27 and 290 K. Analysis of the (1)H spin-lattice relaxation and second moment as a function of temperature revealed two dynamic processes simultaneously present over the entire temperature range studied, with temperature-dependent rotational rates of k(rot) = 5.21 × 10(10) s(-1)·exp(-1.48 kcal·mol(-1)/RT) and k(rot) = 8.00 × 10(10) s(-1)·exp(-2.75 kcal·mol(-1)/RT). Impressively, these correspond to room temperature rotational rates of 4.3 and 0.8 GHz, respectively. Notably, the high-temperature plastic crystalline phase I of bicyclo[2.2.2]octane has a reported activation energy of 1.84 kcal·mol(-1) for rotation about the 1,4 axis, which is 24% larger than E(a) = 1.48 kcal·mol(-1) for the same rotational motion of the fastest BIBCO rotor; yet, the BIBCO rotor has three fewer degrees of translational freedom and two fewer degrees of rotational freedom! Even more so, these rates represent some of the fastest engineered molecular machines, to date. The results of this study highlight the potential of halogen bonding as a valuable construction tool for the design and the synthesis of amphidynamic artificial molecular machines and suggest the potential of modulating properties that depend on the dielectric behavior of crystalline media.

We report on the acid ethylenedithiotetrathiafulvaleneamidoglycine (EDT-TTF-CO-NH-CH(2)-CO(2)H; 1; EDT-TTF=ethylenedithiotetrathiafulvalene) and the 1:1 adduct [(EDT-TTF)(·+)-CO-NH-CH(2)-(CO(2))(-)][(EDT-TTF)-CO-NH-CH(2)-(CO(2)H)]·CH(3)OH (2), a new type of hydrogen-bonded, 1:1 acid/zwitterion hybrid embrace of redox peptidics into a two-dimensional architecture, an example of a system deliberately fashioned so that oxidation of π-conjugated cores toward the radical-cation form would interfere with the activity of the appended ionizable residues in the presence of a templating base during crystal growth. First-principles calculations demonstrate that, notwithstanding preconceived ideas, a metallic state is more stable than the hole-localized alternatives for a neat 1:1 neutral acid/zwitterion hybrid. The inhomogeneous Coulomb field associated with proton-shared, interstacks O-H···O hydrogen bonds between the ionizable residues distributed on both sides of the two-dimensional π-conjugated framework leads, however, to a weak hole localization responsible for the activated but high conductivity of 1 S cm(-1). This situation is reminiscent of the role of the environment on electron transfer in tetraheme cytochrome c, in which the protonation state of a heme propionate becomes paramount, or ion-gated transport phenomena in biology. These observations open rather intriguing opportunities for the construction of electronic systems at the interface of chemistry and biology.

Complementary shapes of the neutral symmetrical halogen-bond bis-donor core and octahedral inorganic cluster core prevent halogen-bonded polymers developing in more than one direction, favouring further templating by conducting radical cation slabs and yielding an 8 : 1 : 1 phase formulation instead of n : 2 : 1, with a 2D net, or m : 3 : 1, with a pseudo-cubic architecture, which may in principle also be targeted.

A series of 2D metals, beta-(BDT-TTP)6[Re6Se6Cl8] x (CHCl2-CHCl2)2, 2; beta-(ST-TTP)6[Re6S6Cl8] x (CH2Cl-CHCl2)2, 3; beta-(BDT-TTP)7[Re6S6Cl8]0.5[Re6S7Cl7]0.5 x (CH2Cl2), 4; beta-(BDT-TTP)7[Re6Se6Cl8]0.5[Re6S7Cl7]0.5 x (CH2Cl2), 5; beta-(BDT-TTP)8[Re6S7Cl7] x (CH2Cl2)4, 6 (BDT-TTP and ST-TTP are 2,5-bis(1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)-1,3,4,6-tetrathiapentalene and 2-(1,3-diselenol-2-ylidene)-5(1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)-1,3,4,6-tetrathiapentalene, respectively) is reported to have one single beta-slab layered topology despite successive increases of the cluster anion negative charge. The charge density within the templating composite inorganic-neutral molecule slab is shown to remain above a threshold of ca. one negative charge per square nanometer, that is, for cluster anions with two negative charges and higher. Conversely, discrete stacks are shown to be stabilized instead in the semiconducting salts (BDT-TTP)2[Re6S5Cl9], 1 where the cluster anion bears one negative charge only. The electronic structure of salts 2-6 is shown to be very stable and kept almost intact across the series. The templating strategy is shown to fulfill its anticipated potential for deliberate installment of incommensurate band fillings in molecular metals. The deliberate admixture of the 6:1 and 8:1 structures yields novel phases with a 7:1 stoichiometry with the anticipated crystal and electronic structures. The action at the organic-inorganic interface triggered by changing the anion charge yet keeping its shape and volume identical, which ultimately governs the shape of the unit cell, is of paramount importance in defining the Fermi surface of these metallic salts. The present BDT-TTP salts thus provide a series of materials with strongly related but subtly different Fermi surfaces worthy of many physical studies. Shubnikov-de Haas measurements are expected to be particularly interesting since they are especially sensitive to the details of the Fermi surface.

In the title compound, (C(10)H(9)NOS(6))K[Hg(SCN)(4)] or (EDT-TTF-CONHMe)K[Hg(SCN)(4))], fully oxidized organic (EDT-TTF-CONHMe)(+.) radical cations form quasi-one-dimensional stacks running along the monoclinic 2(1) axis and alternating along the crystallographic [101] direction with inorganic anion stacks made from mixed K(+)-[Hg(SCN)(4)](2-) ribbons. For each anion, three essentially collinear SCN ligands interact with the K(+) ions via short N...K contacts, while the terminal N atom of the fourth SCN group is engaged in a number of hydrogen-bond contacts with the -CH, -NH and -CH(2) hydrogen-bond donors of the amide function. Radical cations are dimerized along the stacks and the crystal conductivity is activated.

The ionic character of a set of two redox linkages and strong, directional halogen bonding at the organic-inorganic interface compromise to produce two materials sharing a common two-dimensional net, eventually extended in a third dimension, although two of the six symmetrical halogen bond acceptors ultimately remain uninvolved as a result of charge densification.

The coordination ability of the electroactive TTF-based chelating ligand 5,5'-bis(4,5-bis(thiomethyl)-4'-carbamoyltetrathiafulvalene)-2,2'-bipyridine (L) has been tested with Cu(I) and Cu(II) centres. [(L)2Cu(I)](PF6), [(L)2Cu(II)](OTf)2 and [(L)Cu(II)(DMF)3](OTf)2 have been synthesized. A single-crystal X-ray analysis was performed on [(L)Cu(II)(DMF)3](OTf)2, showing a distorted octahedral geometry around the Cu(II) centre, and the formation of dimeric units in the solid state through weak coordination in apical position of an amide oxygen atom from a neighbouring complex. Magnetic data show that the paramagnetic metallic centres are isolated, in agreement with the solid-state structure. Electrochemical measurements were performed on the three complexes and in all cases the Cu(I)/Cu(II) and TTF/TTF+*/TTF2+ redox processes were observed.

(EDT-TTF-CONH2)6[Re6Se8(CN)6], space group R, was prepared by electrocrystallization from the primary amide-functionalized ethylenedithiotetrathiafulvalene, EDT-TTF-CONH2 (E(1/2)1 = 0.49 V vs SCE in CH3CN), and the molecular cluster tetraanion, [Re6Se8(CN)6]4- (E(1/2) = 0.33 V vs SCE in CH3CN), equipped with hydrogen bond donor and hydrogen bond acceptor functionalities, respectively. Its Kagome topology is unprecedented for any TTF-based materials. The metallic state observed at room temperature has a strong two-dimensional character, in coherence with the Kagome lattice symmetry, and the presence of minute amounts of [Re6Se8(CN)6](3-)* identified by electron spin spectroscopy. A structural instability toward a distorted form of the Kagome topology of lesser symmetry is observed at ca. 180 K. The low-temperature structure is associated with a localized, electrically insulating electronic ground state and its magnetic susceptibility accounted for by a model of uniform chains of localized S = 1/2 spins in agreement with the 100 K triclinic crystal structure and band structure calculations. A sliding motion, within one out of the three (EDT-TTF-CONH2)2 dimers coupled to the [Re6Se8(CN6)(3-)*]/[Re6Se8(CN6)4-] proportion at any temperature, and the electronic ground state of the organic-inorganic hybrid material are analyzed on the basis of ESR, dc conductivity, 1H spin-lattice relaxation, and static susceptibility data which qualify a Mott localization in [EDT-TTF-CONH2]6[Re6Se8(CN)6]. The coupling between the metal-insulator transition and a structural transition allows for the lifting of a degeneracy due to the ternary axis in the high temperature, strongly correlated metallic phase which, in turn, leads to Heisenberg chains at low temperature.

Nickel dithiolene complexes symmetrically appended with hydrogen-bond donor/acceptor functionalities such as imide, amide, or cyano/amide groups have been synthesized by a straightforward method of wide applicability starting from one single precursor. Single-crystal X-ray structures reveal the occurrence of one type of ribbon common to all compounds that is based on a recurrent self-complementary intermolecular hydrogen-bonded ring motif linking the symmetrically substituted complexes.

Electroactive molecular materials precursors are obtained through coordination chemistry of the hexarhenium cluster core [Re(6)Se(8)](2+) on the six available apical positions with redox-active phosphines bearing tetrathiafulvalene- or ferrocene-based moieties. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction study and electrospray mass spectrometry ascertain the synthesis of these hexasubstituted electroactive clusters, containing up to 12 redox active sites. Cyclic voltammetry experiments demonstrate that these compounds can be reversibly oxidized at rather low potentials, thus allowing an easy access to the corresponding radical species which should provide new conducting and/or magnetic molecular materials.

Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry was used for the analysis of functionalized rhenium clusters such as [Re6Se8(o-Me2TTFPPh2)6]2+ (1), {Re6Se8[(o-Me2TTF)2PPh]6}2+ (2) and [Re6Se8(MePPh2)6]2+ (3). The high-resolution mass spectra of the intact clusters, performed in dichloromethane, confirm the identification of the compounds by comparison with the theoretical isotopic distributions. Low-resolution full-scan mass spectra recorded at increasing desolvation cone voltage values allow the study of the intrinsic reactivity of ionic species. The survival yield curves illustrating the bimolecular reactivity of 1 and 2 suggest that a bisdimethyltetrathiafulvalene(phenyl)phosphine ligand increases the stability of the functionalized ML6(2+) cluster 2. In the case of the 3, instead of loss of a neutral ligand, ligand exchange is observed either with traces of water present in dichloromethane or with acetonitrile used as solvent.

The first hybrid perovskites incorporating alcohol-based bifunctional ammonium cations, (HO(CH(2))(2)NH(3))(2)PbX(4) (X = I, Br), have been prepared and characterized. (HO(CH(2))(2)NH(3))(2)PbI(4) adopts a monoclinic cell, a = 8.935(1) A, b= 9.056(2) A, c = 10.214(3) A, beta = 100.26(1) degrees , V = 813.3(3) A(3), P2(1)/a, and Z = 2, and (HO(CH(2))(2)NH(3))(2)PbBr(4) is orthorhombic, a = 8.4625(6) A, b = 8.647(1) A, c = 19.918(2) A, V = 1457.5(2) A(3), Pbcn, and Z = 4. In the layered structures, a unique hydrogen-bond network connects adjacent perovskite layers, owing to OH....X, NH(3)(+)....X, and intermolecular NH(3)(+)...OH interactions. Its impact on the bonding features of the inorganic framework and on the quite short interlayer distance, in the case of (HO(CH(2))(2)NH(3))(2)PbI(4), is shown. As a result, a significant red shift of the exciton peaks (lambda = 536 nm (X = I), lambda = 417 nm (X = Br)), compared to other PbX(4)(2)(-)-based perovskite hybrids, is observed, revealing a reduced band gap. A reversible structural transition occurs at T = 96 degrees C (X = I) and T = 125 degrees C (X = Br). An orthorhombic cell of the high-temperature phase of (HO(CH(2))(2)NH(3))(2)PbI(4) with a(HT) = 18.567(6) A, b(HT) = 13.833(6) A, c(HT) = 6.437(2) A, and V = 1653 A(3) is proposed from powder X-ray diffraction. A change in the hydrogen bonding occurs, with molecules standing up in the interlayer space and OH parts probably interacting together, leading to a more conventional situation for ammonium groups and a more distorted perovskite layer. This is in accordance with the blue shift of the exciton peak to lambda = 505 nm (X = I) or to lambda = 374 nm (X = Br) during the phase transition.

The solid-state chemistry of a series of seven ortho-bis(alkylamido)ethylenedithiotetrathiafulvalene derivatives EDT-TTF-(CONHR)2 (R=Me, 1; Et, 2; Pr, 3; Bu, 4; Pent, 5; Hex, 6; and Bz, 7), in their neutral and one-electron-oxidized, radical cation states, was investigated with an eye on the topology of intra- and intermolecular hydrogen-bond motifs. In the case of neutral, monomolecular solids, an intramolecular N--H.O hydrogen bond seals a constrained seven-membered ring for 1, 2, 3, and 7, which is disrupted in butyl derivative 4 in favor of an antiparallel ladder at the expense of any intramolecular hydrogen bond. In the solid-state, the competition between intra- and intermolecular hydrogen bonding observed in solution depends on the packing of the molecules. Electrocrystallization of methyl derivative 1 with ReO4- or ClO4-, two anions of different volumes but otherwise identical charge and symmetry, revealed a fine sensitivity of the constrained seven-membered ring to the internal chemical pressure exerted by the anion. [1]2 *+ReO4 (sigmaRT=8.5 S cm(-1), activation energy Delta=600 K at high temperature) and beta"-[1]2 *+ClO4 (sigmaRT=0.03 S cm(-1), Delta=1600 K; under pressure at room temperature, the conductivity increases by three orders of magnitude up to 17 kbar with a linear variation of the activation energy with pressure, Delta=aP with a=0.202 10(6) K kbar(-1)) have vastly different architectures, dimensionalities, electronic structures, and collective properties, a consequence of the presence of the closed or open structural isomers in one or the other. This exemplifies the flexibility of functionalized TTF derivatives, even when the functional group is directly attached to the electro-active core. This allows an analogy to be drawn with tetrafunctionalized metallocenes, in which such flexibility has already been observed. The experimental data are supported by theoretical calculations of the energy profile of a model molecule on rotation of the amido groups.

Amidopyridine and -2,2'-bipyridine derivatives of EDT-TTF and BTM-TTF (EDT=ethylenedithio, BTM=bis(thiomethyl), TTF=tetrathiafulvalene) have been synthesized and crystallographically characterized. In the solid state, the different supramolecular organization of all these donors results from the competition between the intermolecular interactions, that is, van der Waals, hydrogen-bonding, pi-pi stacking, and donor-acceptor interactions. The electron-donating properties of the new donors have been investigated by cyclic voltammetry measurements. A radical cation salt, formulated [EDT-TTF-CONH-m-Py](.) (+)[PF(6)](-), has been prepared by electrocrystallization and its crystal structure determined by X-ray analysis. Square planar dicationic complexes with the same donor and M(II)L(2) fragments (M=Pd, Pt, L(2)=bis(diphenylphosphino)propane (dppp) or bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (dppe)) have been synthesized and one of them, containing the Pd(dppp) unit, has been structurally characterized. The conformation of the complex in the crystalline state is anti, with the coexistence of the dl racemic pair of enantiomers.

The redox active ligand EDT-TTF-CONH-3-pyridine undergoes a [2 + 2] cycloaddition upon irradiation with polychromatic light, an unprecedented single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation for a TTF derivative.

Attempted thallium triflate abstraction of chloride anions from the MCl(2) complexes of the unsaturated chelating diphosphines o-dimethyl-bis(diphenylphosphino)tetrathiafulvalene (P2) (M = Pd, Pt) and cis-1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethylene (dppen) (M = Pd) affords, surprisingly, a Tl(OTf) adduct in the case of (P2)PdCl(2) and (P2)PtCl(2), with no chloride abstraction, and a dicationic bis(palladium) bis(triflate) salt in the case of (cis-dppen)PdCl(2), in which only one Cl anion was removed. The crystal structures of these complexes were determined by X-ray analysis, which established the formulations (P2)MCl(2).Tl(OTf) (M = Pd, Pt) and [(dppen)PdCl](2)(OTf)(2), respectively. These compounds can be seen as possible intermediates in the general chloride abstraction process between (P-P)MCl(2) (M = Pd, Pt) and thallium triflate.

The first face-capped octahedral clusters with 25 metal-based valence electrons are shown to provide versatile building units capable of engaging in magnetic exchange coupling. Reactions of [Re(5)OsSe(8)Cl(6)](3-) and [Re(4)Os(2)Se(8)Cl(6)](2-) with NaCN in a melt of NaNO(3) or KCF(3)SO(3) afford the 24-electron clusters [Re(5)OsSe(8)(CN)(6)](3-) and [Re(4)Os(2)Se(8)(CN)(6)](2-). The 13C NMR spectrum of a 13C-labeled version of the latter species indicates a 1:2 mixture of cis and trans isomers. Cyclic voltammograms of the clusters in acetonitrile display reversible [Re(5)OsSe(8)(CN)(6)](3-/4-), cis-[Re(4)Os(2)Se(8)(CN)(6)](2-/3-), and trans-[Re(4)Os(2)Se(8)(CN)(6)](2-/3-) couples at E(1/2) = -1.843, -0.760, and -1.031 V vs FeCp(2)(0/+), respectively, in addition to other redox processes. Accordingly, reduction of [Re(5)OsSe(8)(CN)(6)](3-) with sodium amalgam and [Re(4)Os(2)Se(8)(CN)(6)](2-) with cobaltocene produces the 25-electron clusters [Re(5)OsSe(8)(CN)(6)](4-) and [Re(4)Os(2)Se(8)(CN)(6)](3-). EPR spectra of these S = 1/2 species in frozen DMF solutions exhibit isotropic signals with g = 1.46 for the monoosmium cluster and g = 1.74 and 1.09 for the respective cis and trans isomers of the diosmium cluster. In each case, results from DFT calculations show the unpaired spin to delocalize to some extent into the pi* orbitals of the cyanide ligands, suggesting the possibility of magnetic superexchange. Reaction of [Re(5)OsSe(8)(CN)(6)](3-) with [Ni(H(2)O)(6)](2+) in aqueous solution generates the porous Prussian blue analogue Ni(3)[Re(5)OsSe(8)(CN)(6)](2).32H(2)O; however, the tendency of the 25-electron clusters to oxidize in water prohibits their use in reactions of this type. Instead, a series of cyano-bridged assemblies, [Re(6-n)Os(n)Se(8)[CNCu(Me(6)tren)](6)](9+) (n = 0, 1, 2; Me(6)tren = tris(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl)amine), were synthesized to permit comparison of the exchange coupling abilities of clusters with 23-25 electrons. As expected, the results of magnetic susceptibility measurements show no evidence for exchange coupling in the assemblies containing the 23- and 24-electron clusters, but reveal the presence of weak ferromagnetic coupling in [Re(4)Os(2)Se(8)[CNCu(Me(6)tren)](6)](9+). Assuming all cluster-Cu(II) exchange interactions to be equivalent, the data were fit to give an estimated coupling strength of J = 0.4 cm(-1). To our knowledge, the ability of such clusters to participate in magnetic exchange coupling has never previously been demonstrated.

The deliberate design of a series of single crystals of conducting two-dimensional radical cation salts of o-bis(amide)-appended ethylenedithiotetrathiafulvalene, beta'-[EDT-TTF-(CONH(2))(2)](2)X (X = HSO(4)(-), ClO(4)(-), ReO(4)(-), or AsF(6)(-)) and of their parent monocomponent solid EDT-TTF-(CONH(2))(2) is demonstrated and allows us to reach a level of prediction of the structure of molecular conductors. Their conductivity is activated with a gap of 1650 K and a sizable room-temperature conductivity of 0.15 S.cm(-)(1) (for X = ClO(4)(-)) and a singular spin susceptibility for a beta'-type salt that, in addition, changes very remarkably with the anion. The key design element is that of a recurrent, puckered ribbon constructed out of self-complementary, hydrogen-bonded amide...amide ring motifs whose minute modulations of curvature and shape throughout the series have been shown to correlate to very remarkable differences in the intrastack beta(HOMO)(-)(HOMO) interaction energies and changes in the density of states at the Fermi level and on to important differences of spin susceptibility behavior in a system where electron correlations are significant. The coupled activation of structure, electron interactions, and magnetic susceptibility discovered and discussed throughout the paper is unprecedented and is seen as a genuine expression of interfacial hydrogen-bond interactions onto the collective electronic properties.

Neutral pi-conjugated molecules and their radical cations co-exist in [(EDT-TTF-CONHMe+*)4(EDT-TTF-CONHMe0)2] [Re6Se8(CN)6]4- (CH3CN)2(CH2Cl2)2 whose crystal structure reveals that, upon one-electron oxidation, an activation of the N-H and C-H hydrogen bond donor ability is coupled to a deactivation of the hydrogen bond acceptor character of the carbonyl oxygen atom: this is expressed in the supramolecular hydrogen bond pattern and, ultimately, into charge localisation and partition in the solid state.

The ability of I...I van der Waals interactions to direct the self-assembly of slabs of the radical cation of ethylenedithio-1,2-diiodo-tetrathiafulvalene, EDT-TTF-I(2), and polymeric lead iodide covalent anionic layers is demonstrated by the synthesis of single crystals of beta-(EDT-TTF-I(2))(2)(.+)[(Pb(5/6) square (1/6)I(2))(1/3-)](3), triclinic, P-1, a = 7.7818(8), b = 7.9760(8), c = 19.9668(2) A, alpha = 82.409(12), beta = 85.964(12), gamma = 61.621(11) degrees, V = 1080.76(19) A(3), R1, wR2 = 0.0459, 0.0947; and beta-(EDT-TTF-I(2))(2)(.+)[(Pb(2/3+x)Ag(1/3-2x)square(x)I(2))(1/3-)](3), x approximately 0.05, triclinic, P-1, a = 7.7744(8), b = 7.9193(8), c = 19.834(2) A, alpha = 87.189(12), beta = 83.534(12), gamma = 61.602(11) degrees, V = 1067.4(2) A(3), R1, wR2 = 0.0508, 0.0997. The state-of-the-art, combined microprobe and structural analysis of the metal site vacancies and occupancies patterns reveal a commensurate organic-inorganic interface and point out the importance of halogen.halogen van der Waals interactions to future studies aiming at directing interface topologies. The electronic structure, room-temperature metallic character and metal-insulator transition at ca. 70 K of the two-dimensional organic slabs are retained upon alloying of the inorganic sublattice with monocations. The room-temperature conductivity of the metallic lead-silver alloy is 2 orders of magnitude larger than that of beta-(EDT-TTF-I(2))(2)(.+)[(Pb(5/6) square (1/6)I(2))(1/3-)](3). This calls for the study of materials with diverse alloying patterns with metal cations of different nature and charge.

The crystal structures of the title compounds, (C(24)H(20)P)(2)[Ni(C(6)H(6)O(4)S(2))(2)], (I), and (C(24)H(20)P)(2)[Ni(C(6)H(6)O(4)S(2))(2)]I, (II), in the diamagnetic reduced (2-) and paramagnetic oxidized (1-) states, are reported at 200 and 293 K, respectively. In both compounds, the Ni atom lies on an inversion centre and the NiS(4) coordination is thus required to be exactly planar. In the diamagnetic complex, (I), the Ni-S distances are 2.1818 (7) and 2.1805 (6) A, while they are 2.1481 (6) and 2.1392 (5) A in the paramagnetic complex, (II). This results from both the different complex core oxidation states and the different conformations of the methoxycarbonyl groups.

Comparison within the title [Re6Q8X6]4-/[Re6Q8X6]3- redox series of 14 precise crystal structures of the Re6 cluster cores at different low temperatures reveals that the one-electron oxidised, open-shell (23 electron) cores undergo a Jahn-Teller distortion of their parent 24 electron octahedral cores and that D4h and D2h forms may co-exist in the solid state.

Here we describe the synthesis of a mesoporous composite material using the self-assembly of well defined tubular building blocks obtained from the exfoliation of [Nb6O17(4-)]n sheets.

An in-depth analysis of a set of 21 layered structures of metallic pseudopolymorphs of general formulation, beta''-(BEDT-TTF)(4) x (guest)(n) x [Re(6)Q(6)Cl(8)], (BEDT-TTF=bis-ethylenedithiotetrathiafulvalene; Q = S, Se; guest = H(2)O, 1,4-dioxane, THF, CCl(4), C(2)H(5)OH, CHCl(3), CH(2)ClI, CH(2)ClBr, CH(2)Cl(2), CH(2)OH-CH(2)OH, C(5)H(5)N, CH(3)COCH(3), 2-hydroxy-tetrahydrofuran, CH(3)CN, CS(2), C(6)H(6)), with diverse low-temperature behaviors, which differ solely by the nature of the cosolvent molecule selectively included during the electrocrystallization process, reveals a precise set of weak HO-H...Cl-mu-Re, (C-H)(BEDT-TTF)...Cl-mu-Re, C-H...O(guest), (C-H)(guest)...Cl-mu-Re hydrogen bonds at the organic-inorganic interface, none of which dominates any of the others and whose balance is adjusted upon substitution of one guest molecule by another. The electronic structure of the host adjusts to the weak perturbation imposed by exchanging the guest molecules and by balancing the former interfacial interactions; this correlates to a net activation of up to 0.1 eV of the energy of the HOMO level of one of the two donors, while keeping the pattern of HOMO-HOMO intermolecular interactions in the donor layer essentially unaltered. It is suggested that this controls the stability of the metallic state at low temperature or the occurrence of a metal-to-insulator phase transition for particular guests along the series. It is concluded that by allowing for numerous tiny modifications at the organic-inorganic interface within a single, robust host structure, one sees a concerted, inherently weak structural response of the system that is proportional to the magnitude of the underlying, equally weak activation of the HOMO energy of a fraction of the pi-donor molecules within the slabs; this has a sizeable influence on the macroscopic transport properties of the system.

A remarkable autofragmentation/rearrangement sequence results in the unprecedented formation of inorganic concave cyclic anion [(NiPS 4 ) 3 ] 3- (structure shown on the right) upon dissolving the potassium salt of the charged mineral polymer 1 ∞ [NiPS 4 ] - in DMF; the initial complex fluid has a transient anisotropic texture that can be identified by optical microscopy under polarized light. In contrast, the complex fluid that results upon dissolving 1 ∞ [PdPS 4 ] - is stable up to 323 K as persistent, flexible, charged chains., (© 1998 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH, Weinheim, Fed.
