Safe, accurate, and reliable analysis of urinary biomarkers is clinically important for early detection and monitoring of the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD), as it has become one of the world's most prevalent non-communicable diseases. However, current technologies for measuring urinary biomarkers are either time-consuming and limited to well-equipped hospitals or lack the necessary sensitivity for quantitative analysis and post a health risk to frontline practitioners. Here we report a robust paper-based dual functional biosensor, which is integrated with the clinical urine sampling vial, for the simultaneous and quantitative analysis of pH and glucose in urine. The pH sensor was fabricated by electrochemically depositing IrOx onto a paper substrate using optimised parameters, which enabled an ultrahigh sensitivity of 71.58 mV pH -1 . Glucose oxidase (GOx) was used in combination with an electrochemically deposited Prussian blue layer for the detection of glucose, and its performance was enhanced by gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), chitosan, and graphite composites, achieving a sensitivity of 1.5 μA mM -1 . This dual function biosensor was validated using clinical urine samples, where a correlation coefficient of 0.96 for pH and 0.98 for glucose detection was achieved with commercial methods as references. More importantly, the urine sampling vial was kept sealed throughout the sample-to-result process, which minimised the health risk to frontline practitioners and simplified the diagnostic procedures. This diagnostic platform, therefore, holds high promise as a rapid, accurate, safe, and user-friendly point-of-care (POC) technology for the analysis of urinary biomarkers in frontline clinical settings.

A new analytical method for chronic kidney disease (CKD) detection utilizing paper spray mass spectrometry (PS-MS) combined with machine learning is presented. The analytical protocol is rapid and simple, based on metabolic profile alterations in urine. Anonymized raw urine samples were deposited (10 μL each) onto pointed PS-MS sample strips. Without waiting for the sample to dry, 75 μL of acetonitrile and high voltage were applied to the strips, using high resolution mass spectrometry measurement (15 s per sample) with polarity switching to detect a wide range of metabolites. Random forest machine learning was used to classify the resulting data. The diagnostic performance for the potential diagnosis of CKD was evaluated for accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity, achieving results >96% for the training data and >91% for validation and test data sets. Metabolites selected by the classification model as up- or down-regulated in healthy or CKD samples were tentatively identified and in agreement with previously reported literature. The potential utilization of this approach to discriminate albuminuria categories (normo, micro, and macroalbuminuria) was also demonstrated. This study indicates that PS-MS combined with machine learning has the potential to be used as a rapid and simple diagnostic tool for CKD.

In the search for pharmaceutically active compounds from natural products, it is crucial and challenging to develop separation methods that target not only structurally similar compounds but also a class of compounds with desired pharmaceutical functions. To achieve both structure-oriented and function-oriented selectivity, the choice of functional monomers with broad interactions or even biomimetic roles towards targeted compounds is essential. In this work, an imidazole (IM)-functionalized paper membrane was synthesized to realize selectivity. The IM was selected based on its capability to provide multiple interactions, participation in several bioprocesses, and experimental verification of adsorption performance. Using gallic acid as a representative component of Pomegranate Peel , the preparation conditions and extraction parameters were systematically investigated. The optimal membrane solid-phase extraction (MSPE) method allowed for enrichment of gallic acid from the complex matrix of Pomegranate Peel , enabling facile quantitative analysis with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.1 ng mL -1 . Furthermore, with the aid of cheminformatics, the extracted compounds were found to be similar in both their structures and pharmaceutical functions. Paper-based materials with precisely designed wettabilities show great potential for fluid transport control, separation, and sensing. To tune the wettability of paper, paper sheets are usually modified after the paper manufacturing process. This limits the complexity of the local wettability design. We combined the wettability design of the individual fibres with subsequent paper sheet fabrication through either fibre deposition or fibre printing. Using silica-based cellulose fibre functionalization, the wettability of the paper sheets, containing only one specific fibre type, could be gradually tuned from highly hydrophilic to highly hydrophobic, resulting in water exclusion. The development of a silica-functionalized fibre library containing mesoporous or dense silica coatings, as well as silica with varying precursor compositions, further enabled the variation of the paper wettability and fluid flow. By combining this fibre library with the paper fabrication process by (i) fibre deposition or (ii) fibre printing, the paper wettability architecture and thus the local fibre composition were adjusted without any further processing steps. This enabled the fabrication of papers with wettability integration, such as a wettability pattern or a Janus paper design, containing wettability gradients along the paper sheet cross section. The regular and on-site monitoring of ions in drinking water is essential for safeguarding public health, ensuring high water quality, and preserving the ecological balance of aquatic ecosystems. Thus, developing a portable analytical device for the rapid, cost-effective, and visual on-site detection of multiple environmental pollutants is notably significant. In the present work, a novel ratiometric microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPAD) was designed and developed for the simultaneous detection of Fe 3+ and Cu 2+ ions in water samples taking advantages from built-in masking zone. The μPAD was functionalized with a greenish-yellow fluorescent Zn-based metal-organic framework@tetracycline (FMOF-5@TC) nanocomposite, and the ratiometric design was based on the change in emission color from greenish yellow (FMOF-5@TC) to blue (FMOF-5). The μPAD consisted of one sample zone linked to two detection zones via two channels: the first channel was for the detection of both ions, while the second was intended for detecting only Cu 2+ ions and comprised a built-in masking zone to remove Fe 3+ ions prior to reaching the detection zone. The corresponding color changes were recorded with the aid of a smartphone and RGB calculations. The linear ranges were 0.1-80 μM for Cu 2+ and 0.2-160 μM for Fe 3+ , with limits of detection of 0.027 and 0.019 μM, respectively. The simple μPAD design enabled the simultaneous detection of Cu 2+ and Fe 3+ ions in drinking water samples with excellent accuracy and precision, with spike recoveries of 81.28-96.36% and 83.01-102.33% for Cu 2+ and Fe 3+ , respectively.

This article introduces distance-based paper analytical devices (dPADs) integrated with molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) and carbon dots (CDs) for simultaneous quantification of cytokine biomarkers, namely C-reactive protein (CRP), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in human biological samples for diagnosis of cytokine syndrome. Using fluorescent CDs and MIP technology, the dPAD exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity. Detection is based on fluorescence quenching of CDs achieved through the interaction of the target analytes with the MIP layer on the paper substrate. Quantitative analysis is easily accomplished by measuring the distance length of quenched fluorescence with a traditional ruler and naked eye readout enabling rapid diagnosis of cytokine syndrome and the underlying infection. Our sensor demonstrated linear ranges of 2.50-24.0 pg mL -1 ( R 2 = 0.9974), 0.25-3.20 pg mL -1 ( R 2 = 0.9985), and 1.50-16.0 pg mL -1 ( R 2 = 0.9966) with detection limits (LODs) of 2.50, 0.25, and 1.50 pg mL -1 for CRP, TNF-α, and IL-6, respectively. This sensor also demonstrated remarkable selectivity compared to a sensor employing a non-imprinted polymer (NIP), and precision with the highest relative standard deviation (RSD) of 5.14%. The sensor is more accessible compared to prior methods relying on expensive reagents and instruments and complex fabrication methods. Furthermore, the assay provided notable accuracy for monitoring these biomarkers in various human samples with recovery percentages ranging between 99.22% and 103.58%. By integrating microfluidic systems, nanosensing, and MIPs technology, our developed dPADs hold significant potential as a cost-effective and user-friendly analytical method for point-of-care diagnostics (POC) of cytokine-related disorders. This concept can be further extended to developing diagnostic devices for other biomarkers.

A new method utilizing fluorescent ratiometry is proposed for detecting putrescine and spermidine. The method involves the use of a fluorescent probe comprising a 2D halide perovskite synthesized from octadecylamine-iodine and PbI 2 via a grinding-sonicating technique, along with a Eu 3+ -complex. Upon excitation at 290 nm, the probe fluoresces at two distinguishable wavelengths. The addition of putrescine and spermidine significantly decreases the emission of the 2D halide perovskite at 496 nm, while the emission of the Eu 3+ -complex at 618 nm remains stable. The color changes of the probe depend on the concentration of putrescine and spermidine, and the assay offers linearity over a wide concentration range (30-4000 ng mL -1 ), a low detection limit (4 ng mL -1 for spermidine), and a quick response time. Furthermore, a portable device based on a smartphone can be used to record the color change of the paper test strip using the prepared fluorescent materials. Paper-based electrochemical sensors have the characteristics of flexibility, biocompatibility, environmental protection, low cost, wide availability, and hydropathy, which make them very suitable for the development and application of biological detection. This work proposes electrospun cellulose acetate nanofiber (CA NF)-decorated paper-based screen-printed (PBSP) electrode electrochemical sensors. The CA NFs were directly collected on the PBSP electrode through an electrospinning technique at an optimized voltage of 16 kV for 10 min. The sensor was functionalized with different bio-sensitive materials for detecting different targets, and its sensing capability was evaluated by CV, DPV, and chronoamperometry methods. The test results demonstrated that the CA NFs enhanced the detection sensitivity of the PBSP electrode, and the sensor showed good stability, repeatability, and specificity ( p < 0.01, N = 3). The electrochemical sensing of the CA NF-decorated PBSP electrode exhibited a short detection duration of ∼5-7 min and detection ranges of 1 nmol mL -1 -100 μmol mL -1 , 100 fg mL -1 -10 μg mL -1 , and 1.5 × 10 2 -10 6 CFU mL -1 and limits of detection of 0.71 nmol mL -1 , 89.1 fg mL -1 , and 30 CFU mL -1 for glucose, Ag85B protein, and E. coli O157:H7 , respectively. These CA NF-decorated PBSP sensors can be used as a general electrochemical tool to detect, for example, organic substances, proteins, and bacteria, which are expected to achieve point-of-care testing of pathogenic microorganisms and have wide application prospects in biomedicine, clinical diagnosis, environmental monitoring, and food safety.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as a promising class of biomarkers for early detection of various cancers, including ovarian cancer. However, quantifying miRNAs in human blood samples is challenging owing to the issues of sensitivity and specificity. In this study, hsa-miR-200a-3p of the miR-200a sub-family, which is a biomarker of ovarian cancer, was used as the analyte to demonstrate the analytical capability of an integrated biosensing platform using an extremely sensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) nanotag-nanoaggregate-embedded beads (NAEBs), magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), a pair of highly specific locked nucleic acid (LNA) probes, and a semi-automated paper-based electrowetting-on-dielectric (pEWOD) device to provide labor-less and thorough sample cleanup and recovery. A sandwich approach where NAEBs are modified by one LNA-1 probe and MNPs are modified by another LNA-2 probe was applied. Then, the target analyte miRNA-200a-3p was introduced to form a sandwich nanocomplex through hybridization with the pair of LNA probes. The pEWOD device was used to achieve short cleanup time and good recovery of the nanocomplex, bringing the total analysis time to less than 30 min. The detection limit of this approach can reach 0.26 fM through SERS detection. The versatility of this method without the need for RNA extraction from clinical samples is expected to have good potential in detecting other miRNAs.

The Cu(i)-catalyzed Huisgen cycloaddition click chemistry reaction is of particular interest in the production of paper sheets or natural fiber composites since it leads to the formation of chemically stable bonds between two fibers. This study focuses on the click chemistry modification of kraft pulp fibers. We based our approach on prior research that treated kraft fibers using click chemistry, including propargylation and tosylation reactions. Our focus was on enhancing these treatments to achieve better final sheet properties. After the azidation of tosylated fibers, the crosslinking is carried out with and without a catalyst using water as a solvent to form enhanced kraft fiber sheets. The chemical characterization and the mechanical properties of fibers obtained at intermediate stages confirmed the presence of various functions on the surface of the modified fibers, with a very high degree of substitution and the inter-fiber cross-linking by click chemistry. Parkinson's disease (PD), the second most frequent neurodegenerative illness, is a neurological ailment that produces unintentional or uncontrolled body movements, which should be diagnosed in its early stages to hinder the progression. Monitoring the concentration of α-synuclein (α-Syn) in body fluids can be one of the most efficient ways for PD early detection. In this work, a paper-based electrochemical immunosensor was designed for α-Syn bio-assay in human plasma samples based on encapsulation of the biotinylated antibody on novel dendritic fibrous nanosilica ((KCC-1- nPr -CS 2 )-Ab). For this purpose, a three-electrode system was prepared using stabilization of silver nano-ink on photographic paper. Then, the (KCC-1-NH-CS 2 )-Ab was immobilized on its surface and used to detect the target antigen (α-Syn). After characterization of the prepared substrate by FE-SEM and EDS, the redox behavior of the biosensor was evaluated using chronoamperometry techniques. Under optimal experimental conditions and using a label-free strategy, the engineered immunosensor showed a linear relationship between peak current and antigen concentration in the linear range from 0.002 to 128 ng mL -1 with the lower limit of quantification of 0.002 ng mL -1 . Moreover, this work involves unprecedented use of conductive nano-inks for the manufacture of α-Syn immunosensor, which is aided by the use of a mesoporous silicate dendrimer in encapsulating the α-Syn antibody, thus offering a robust and simple point-of-care device for early PD diagnosis. Biogenic amines (BAs) are a group of organic compounds that are produced through the decarboxylation of amino acids by microorganisms. These compounds are commonly found in a variety of foods and are known to cause adverse health effects if consumed in high concentrations. Therefore, the development of sensitive and rapid detection methods for detection and determination of BAs is essential for ensuring food safety. In this study, a novel colorimetric affordable test strip (CATS) was developed for the colorimetric and naked-eye detection of two BAs of ethylenediamine (EDA) and histamine (HIS) in meat samples. Also, triangular silver nanoparticles (AgNPrs) were used as a diagnostic optical probe, and CATS used as a simple, environmentally friendly, inexpensive diagnostic substrate for on - site recognition of meat spoil. The AgNPrs-based optosensor demonstrated high sensitivity and selectivity towards EDA and HIS, allowing for the detection of low concentrations of the BAs in real food samples such as raw chicken and beef. The system presented a UV-vis technique for HIS and EDA analysis in the linear range of 0.1 μM to 0.01 mM, with an LLOQ of 0.1 μM, and 0.05 to 1 μM, with an LLOQ of 0.05 μM, respectively. Additionally, the performance of the designed CATS in the analysis of produced gases was evaluated, highlighting the potential of this simple and cost-effective strategy for the development of BAs diagnostic kits. A novel, simple, affordable, and reliable colorimetric paper-based analytical device (PAD) was developed for the point-of-use quality testing of ethanol-based hand sanitizers, mainly against adulteration by water. The principle was based on the novel solvatochromism of methylparaben (MPB)-Fe 3+ complex, where water is essential for complex formation and ethanol is necessary for MPB solubility. The intensity of the formed violet color, measured at 528 nm, showed a good correlation ( R 2 ions and MPB on chitosan-modified filter paper. The developed PAD was successfully applied for the quality testing of ethanol-based hand sanitizers using an established color index, where clearly distinct colors were observed as a function of the percentage ethanol (0-100%). The developed test strips could achieve on-site lab-quality results without expensive or sophisticated instruments using a few milligrams of FeCl 3+ and MPB in addition to regular filter paper. Multiple protocols have been reported to fabricate paper-based analytical devices (PADs). However, some of these techniques must be revised because of the instrumentation required. This paper describes a versatile and globally affordable method to fabricate PADs using office paper as a substrate and a laser printing technique to define hydrophobic barriers on paper surfaces. To demonstrate the feasibility of the alternatives proposed in this study, the fabrication of devices for three types of detection commonly associated with using PADs was demonstrated: colorimetric detection, electrochemical detection, and mass spectrometry associated with a paper-spray ionization (PSI-MS) technique. Besides that, an evaluation of the type of paper used and chemical modifications required on the substrate surface are also presented in this report. Overall, the developed protocol was suitable for using office paper as a substrate, and the laser printing technique as an efficient fabrication method when using this substrate is accessible at a resource-limited point-of-need. Target analytes were used as a proof of concept for these detection techniques. Colorimetric detection was carried out for acetaminophen, iron, nitrate, and nitrite with limits of detection of 0.04 μg, 4.5 mg mL -1 , 2.7 μmol L -1 , and 6.8 μmol L -1 , respectively. A limit of detection of 0.048 fg mL -1 was obtained for the electrochemical analysis of prostate-specific antigen. Colorimetric and electrochemical devices revealed satisfactory performance when office paper with a grammage of 90 g m -2 was employed. Methyldopa analysis was also carried out using PSI-MS, which showed a good response in the same paper weight and behavior compared to chromatographic paper.

Dapoxetine (DPX) belongs to the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class and functions by blocking the serotonin transporter and increasing serotonin activity, thereby delaying ejaculation. Therefore, monitoring of the concentration of DPX in human biofluids is important for clinicians. In this study, application of silver nanoparticles with the morphology of prisms (AgNPrs) for the sensitive measurement of DPX using colorimetric chemosensing and the spectrophotometric method was investigated. Also, DPX was determined in real samples using the spectrophotometry method. Based on the obtained results, all of the detection process in colorimetric assay is related to morphological reform of AgNPrs after it's specific electrostatic and covalent interaction with DPX as analyte. The UV-vis results indicate that the proposed AgNPrs-based chemosensing system has a wide range of linearity (0.01 μM to 1 mM) with a low limit of quantification of 0.01 μM in human urine samples, which is suitable for clinical analysis of this drug in human urine samples. It is important to point out that, this chemosensing strategy showed inappropriate analytical results for the detection of DPX in human urine samples which is a novelty of this platform. Finally, the optimized microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPAD) was integrated with the colorimetric analysis of DPX to provide a time/color system for estimating analyte concentration by a portable substrate toward in situ and on-site biomedical analysis. Interestingly, the analytical validation tests showed appropriate results with great stability, which may facilitate commercialization of the engineered substrate. For the first time, in order to provide a simple and portable colorimetric/spectrophotometric recognition system to sensitive determination of DPX, an optimized pump-less microfluidic paper-based colorimetric device (μPCD) was introduced and validated for the real-time biomedical analysis of this analyte. Paper-based ratiometric fluorescence sensors are normally prepared using two or more types of fluorescent materials on a paper chip for simple, low-cost and fast detection. However, the choice of multi-step and one-step modifications on the paper chip affects the analytical performance. Herein, a novel paper-based dual-emission ratiometric fluorescence sensor was designed for the selective detection of tetracycline (TC). Carbon dots (CDs) modified with Eu 3+ were combined with a sealed paper-based microfluidic chip by two methods: one-step grafting of CDs-Eu 3+ on paper and step-by-step grafting of CDs and Eu 3+ on paper. The analytical performance was studied and optimized respectively. The red fluorescence of Eu 3+ at 450 nm is enhanced and the blue fluorescence of CDs at 617 nm is quenched by energy transfer in the presence of TC. Under optimal conditions, TC is selectively determined in the linear range from 0.1 μM to 100 μM with a detection limit of 0.03 μM by the step-by-step grafting method. In addition, the sealed paper chip could effectively prevent pollution and volatilization from the reagent. This technique has been used to analyze TC in seafood aquaculture water with satisfactory results.

In the present work, four CaCO 3 -rich solid residues from the pulp and paper industry (lime mud, green liquor sludge, electrostatic precipitator dust, and lime dregs) were assessed for their potential as co-sequestrating agents in carbon capture. Carbonic anhydrase (CA) was added to promote both CO 2 hydration and residue mineral dissolution, offering an enhancement in CO 2 -capture yield under atmospheric (up to 4-fold) and industrial-gas mimic conditions (up to 2.2-fold). Geological CO 2 storage using olivine as a reference material was employed in two stages: one involving mineral dissolution, with leaching of Mg 2+ and SiO 2 from olivine; and the second involving mineral carbonation, converting Mg 2+ and bicarbonate to MgCO 3 as a permanent storage form of CO 2 . The results showed an enhanced carbonation yield up to 6.9%, when CA was added in the prior CO 2 -capture step. The proposed route underlines the importance of the valorization of industrial residues toward achieving neutral, or even negative emissions in the case of bioenergy-based plants, without the need for energy-intensive compression and long-distance transport of the captured CO 2 . Sodium (Na) metal batteries such as Na-ion batteries and Na-CO 2 batteries are considered to be excellent alternatives to lithium batteries in terms of their potential applications because of their high specific capacity and low cost. However, the sodium anode showed low efficiency and poor cycling in Na-metal battery performance due to the formation of sodium dendrites and serious corrosion. In this work, nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) co-doped carbon paper (NP-CP) modified with cobalt tetroxide (Co 3 O 4 ) nanoparticles was prepared as the Na anode carrier (Co 3 O 4 @NP-CP), and a sodium-based composite anode (Na-Co@NP-CP) was further prepared by electrodepositing sodium. The experimental results indicate that the N, P and Co 3 O 4 multi-doped carbon paper has good sodiophilicity, which can induce the uniform plating/stripping of Na + ions and inhibit the growth of Na dendrites. The N, P doped carbon paper provides a high surface area and tremendous three-dimensional (3D) framework to effectively reduce the areal current density, facilitate the transfer of electrons, and enhance battery life. Therefore, Na-Co@NP-CP based symmetric cells exhibit stable cycling of over 1100 hours at current densities of 1 mA cm -2 and fixed capacity of 1 mA h cm -2 . When the Na-Co@NP-CP anode couples with CO 2 , the assembled batteries can deliver a stable cycling of 165 cycles at current densities of 500 mA g -1 and limited capacity of 500 mA h g -1 . This paper reports a spin-disc paper-based device with 10 individual detection units containing electromagnetic modules controlling the sample incubation time before chemiluminescence (CL) signal detection. After the sample was added to the top paper chip and incubated with the enzyme, the electromagnet was turned off to allow contact between the top and bottom paper. The H 2 O 2 generated by the sample flowed vertically to the bottom paper and initiated the oxidase of the luminol to generate the CL signal. After one detection the disc was automatically rotated to the next position to repeat the above detection. The advantage of using the device over the lateral flow and the in situ detection was firstly proved using the detection of H 2 O 2 and the glucose/lactate sample with 5 minute incubation. The CL intensity was increased 300 times/1000 times as the glucose/lactate was incubated for 5 minutes compared to the non-incubated samples. Afterward, the device was employed to separately detect glucose and lactate diluted in PBS, artificial sweat, artificial saliva, and fresh cell culture media. Finally, the device was employed to detect the glucose and lactate in the media collected over the 24 hour culture of PC3 cells. The uptake and production rates of glucose and lactate were correspondingly determined as 0.328 ± 0.015 pmol h -1 per cell and 1.254 ± 0.053 pmol h -1 per cell, respectively. The reported device has wide application potential due to its capabilities in automatic detection of multiple samples with very high sensitivity and small sample volume (down to 0.5 μL).

Exosomal microRNAs (miRNAs) play a pivotal role in intercellular communication, regulating gene expression in target cells, and hold significant promise as cancer biomarkers for early detection and screening. However, achieving precise and viable detection of exosomal miRNAs remains a challenge. This paper proposes an all-in-one detection strategy for breast cancer-derived exosomal miRNA-21 on a pen-based paper chip (PPC). The PPC is constructed using a modified automatic pen and lateral flow assay (LFA), which results in a cost-effective fabrication process. The user only needs to add the sample and trigger the top of the self-contained PPC after a period of time to complete the entire detection process. To enhance the sensitivity of exosomal miRNA testing, an enzyme-free catalyzed hairpin assembly (CHA) is further introduced, enabling highly sensitive detection of miRNA-21 with a limit of detection (LOD) of 25 fmol. Additionally, the detection of miRNAs in differentially-expressed cells and clinical samples has also been successfully achieved with high specificity. Overall, the proposed PPC provides an effective tool for detecting early cancer, monitoring diseases, and establishing point of care testing (POCT).

Albuminuria is a clinical condition associated with poor kidney function, diagnosed by determining the ratio of albumin to creatinine concentrations in patient urine samples. We present a high-throughput paper spray mass spectrometry (PS-MS) method for simultaneous quantitation of urinary albumin and creatinine for potential diagnosis of albuminuria. Minimal (urine dilution) or no sample preparation is required. The analytical performance of the method was evaluated, achieving linear calibration curves ( R 2 > 0.99) with little inter-day variability in the slope ( N = 5 days), exhibiting coefficient of variation (CV) of 8% and 3% for albumin and creatinine, respectively. LOD and LOQ for albumin were 2.1 and 7.0 mg L -1 , and for creatinine were 0.01 and 0.03 mmol L -1 , respectively. Intra- and inter-day ( N = 5) precisions (%CV) and accuracies (%bias) were <10% and ±11%, respectively, for both analytes. The method was applied to determine albumin-to-creatinine ratios in anonymous human patient urine samples ( N = 56), and a correlation of R 2 = 0.9744 was achieved between the PS-MS results and validated clinical method results. This work demonstrates the utility of PS-MS to simultaneously quantify a large (albumin) and a small (creatinine) molecule directly in patient urine samples, and its potential as a tool for clinical albuminuria diagnostics.

π-Conjugated polymers such as polythiophene provide intramolecular wire effects upon analyte capture, which contribute to sensitive detection in chemical sensing. However, inherent aggregation-induced quenching causes difficulty in fluorescent chemical sensing in the solid state. Herein, we propose a solid-state fluorescent chemosensor array device made of a paper substrate (PCSAD) for the qualitative and quantitative detection of metal ions. A polythiophene derivative modified by dipicolylamine moieties (1 poly ), which shows optical changes upon the addition of target metal ions ( i.e. , Cu 2+ , Cd 2+ , Ni 2+ , Co 2+ , Pb 2+ , Zn 2+ , and Hg 2+ ), was highly dispersed on the paper substrate using office apparatus. In this regard, morphological observation of the PCSAD after printing of 1 poly suggested the contribution of the fiber structures of the paper substrate to the homogeneous dispersion of 1 poly ink to suppress aggregation-induced quenching. The optical changes in the PCSAD upon the addition of metal ions was rapidly recorded using a smartphone, which was further applied to imaging analysis and pattern recognition techniques for high-throughput sensing. Indeed, the printed PCSAD embedded with 1 poly achieved the accurate detection of metal ions at ppm levels contained in river water. The limit of detection of the PCSAD-based sensing system using a smartphone (48 ppb for Cu 2+ ions) is comparable to that of a solution-based sensing system using a stationary spectrophotometer (16 ppb for Cu 2+ ions). Cellulose, as a naturally abundant and biocompatible material, is still gaining interest due to its high potential for functionalization. This makes cellulose a promising candidate for replacing plastics. Understanding how cellulose interacts with various additives is crucial for creating composite materials with diverse properties, as it is the case for plastics. In addition, the mechanical properties of the composite materials are assumed to be related to the mobility of the additives against the cellulose. Using a well-defined cellulose model surface (CMS), we aim to understand the adsorption and desorption of two polymeric particles (core-shell particles and microgels) to/from the cellulose surface. The nanomechanics of particles and CMS are quantified by indentation measurements with an atomic force microscope (AFM). AFM topography measurements quantified particle adsorption and desorption on the CMS, while peak force AFM measurements determined the force needed to move individual particles. Both particles and the CMS exhibited pH-dependent charge behavior, allowing a tunable interaction between them. Particle adsorption was irreversible and driven by electrostatic forces. In contrast, desorption and particle mobility forces are dominated by structural morphology. In addition, we found that an annealing procedure consisting of swelling/drying cycles significantly increased the adhesion strength of both particles. Using the data, we achieve a deeper understanding of the interaction of cellulose with polymeric particles, with the potential to advance the development of functional materials and contribute to various fields, including smart packaging, sensors, and biomedical applications.

Developing a fluidic platform that combines high-throughput with reconfigurability is essential for a wide range of cutting-edge applications, but achieving both capabilities simultaneously remains a significant challenge. Herein, we propose a novel and unique method for droplet manipulation via drawing surface charge graphics on electrode-free papers in a contactless way. We find that opposite charge graphics can be written and retained on the surface layer of porous insulating paper by a controlled charge depositing method. The retained charge graphics result in high-resolution patterning of electrostatic potential wells (EPWs) on the hydrophobic porous surface, allowing for digital and high-throughput droplet handling. Since the charge graphics can be written/projected dynamically and simultaneously in large areas, allowing for on-demand and real-time reconfiguration of EPWs, we are able to develop a charge-graphic fluidic platform with both high reconfigurability and high throughput. The advantages and application potential of the platform have been demonstrated in chemical detection and dynamically controllable fluidic networks.

A novel, biodegradable substrate based, and cost-effective flexible electrochemical sensor was developed for the highly selective and sensitive detection of one of the major neurotransmitters, dopamine, which can be utilised as a disposable electrode for point-of-care diagnostic applications. The active material CuSnB decorated over cellulose paper exhibits good sensitivities of 3.92 μA μM -1 cm -2 with a limit of detection of 0.5 nM. Moreover, the flexible sensor demonstrated superior selectivity towards co-existing metabolites such as ascorbic acid, glucose, and uric acid, in addition to stability at various mechanical deformations.

A paper-based ratiometric fluorescent sensing platform has been developed for glucose detection based on a dual-emission fluorescent probe consisting of carbon quantum dots (C QDs) and CdTe QDs. When the two kinds of QDs are mixed, the fluorescence of C QDs is reversibly quenched by CdTe QDs. However, in the presence of glucose, the fluorescence of CdTe QDs is quenched by H 2 O 2 catalyzed by glucose oxidase (GOx), which restores the fluorescence of C QDs. The proposed paper-based ratiometric fluorescent sensing platform exhibited good sensitivity and selectivity towards glucose. The working linear range was 0.1 mM to 50 mM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.026 mM. The emergence of drug-resistant microorganisms has threatened global health, and microbial infections have severely limited the use of medical materials. For example, the attachment and colonization of pathogenic bacteria to medical implant materials can lead to wound infections, inflammation and complications, as well as implant failure, shortening their lifespan and even resulting in patient death. In the era of antibiotic resistance, antimicrobial drug discovery needs to prioritize unconventional therapies that act on new targets or adopt new mechanisms. In this regard, supramolecular antimicrobial peptides have emerged as attractive therapeutic platforms, both as bactericides for combination antibiotics and as delivery vehicles. By taking advantage of their programmable intermolecular and intramolecular interactions, peptides can be modified to form higher-order structures (including nanofibers and nanoparticles) with unique functionality. This paper begins with an analysis of the relationship between peptide self-assembly and antimicrobial activity, describes in detail the research and development of various self-assembled antimicrobial peptides in recent years, and finally explores different combinatorial strategies for self-assembling antimicrobial peptides.

In the pursuit of a clean and environmentally friendly future, magnetic refrigerator technology based on the magnetocaloric effect has been proposed as a replacement for conventional refrigeration technologies characterized by inefficient energy use, greenhouse gas emissions, and ozone depletion. This paper presents an in-depth exploration of the current state of research on magnetocaloric effect (MCE) materials by, examining various types of MCE materials and their respective potentials. The focus is particularly directed towards perovskite manganite materials because of their numerous advantages over other materials. These advantages include a wide working temperature range, easily adjustable Curie temperature around room temperature, excellent chemical stability, cost-effective production processes, negligible magnetic and thermal hysteresis properties, as well as competitive values for -Δ S M and Δ T ad compared to other materials. Additionally, crucial parameters defining the MCE properties of perovskite manganite materials are comprehensively discussed, both at a fundamental level and in detail.

Monolithic adsorbent removal of fluoride from water is considered an effective and non-secondary pollution method. Here, a portable hydroxyl-functionalized coal gangue-based cordierite porous ceramic sheet (ACGC-Fe) is prepared by using coal gangue solid waste with a specific silicon-aluminum-rich composition ratio and a small amount of magnesium oxide as a raw material through powder compression molding and mild chemical modification. The prepared ACGC-Fe can be used to treat fluorine-containing wastewater and the maximum adsorption of fluorine can reach 18.69 mg g -1 . The Langmuir (Freundlich) adsorption isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model here provided a satisfactory description of the fluoride removal operating mechanism, and it is confirmed that the adsorption mechanism of ACGC-Fe is mainly attributed to the chemisorption of hydrogen bonds (with hydroxyl group) and ionic bonds (with metal), and physical adsorption based on cordierite porous ceramic pores. Antimicrobial resistance poses a serious threat to human health due to the high morbidity and mortality caused by drug-resistant microbial infections. Therefore, the development of rapid, sensitive and selective identification methods is key to improving the survival rate of patients. In this paper, a sandwich-type electrochemical DNA biosensor based on a polyadenine-DNA tetrahedron probe was constructed. The key experimental conditions were optimized, including the length of polyadenine, the concentration of the polyadenine DNA tetrahedron, the concentration of the signal probe and the hybridization time. At the same time, poly-avidin-HRP80 was used to enhance the electrochemical detection signal. Finally, excellent biosensor performance was achieved, and the detection limit for the synthetic DNA target was as low as 1 fM. In addition, we verified the practicability of the system by analyzing E. coli with the MCR-1 plasmid and realized multi-channel detection of the drug resistance genes MCR-1, blaNDM, blaKPC and blaOXA. With the ideal electrochemical interface, the polyA-based biosensor exhibits excellent stability, which provides powerful technical support for the rapid detection of antibiotic-resistant strains in the field.

Catalytic hydrogenolysis of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) has become a hot topic in the bioenergy field in recent years. It remains a challenge to mediate the activation/hydrogenation/hydrogenolysis of C-O and C[double bond, length as m-dash]O bonds of HMF at high temperatures. Herein, bimetallic Ru-Co/AC catalysts were prepared by the "two-step" reduction method and were used to catalyze the hydrogenolysis of HMF to DMF. The effects of different reduction methods, Ru/Co ratios, and Ru loading on the catalytic performances of the Ru-Co/AC catalysts were investigated, and the physicochemical properties of the catalysts were characterized by TEM, XPS, H 2 -TPR, etc. It was found that the catalysts reduced by the "two-step" reduction method exhibited better catalytic activities than those fabricated by a single H 2 or NaBH 4 reduction method. The introduction of Co metals promoted the dispersion of Ru nanoparticles (NPs) on AC and the transfer of electrons from Co to Ru, thereby improving the catalytic activity. An excellent yield of DMF up to 97.9% and 98.7% conversion of HMF were achieved in a short time (1.5 h) under the optimal conditions (200 °C, 1 MPa). Furthermore, the possible reaction pathway for the hydrogenolysis of HMF to DMF over 5%Ru-1%Co/AC catalyst is also discussed. The influence of ambient humidity on the gas-sensing characteristics of metal oxide semiconductors has been one of the greatest obstacles for gas-sensing applications. In this paper, the pure WO 3 and CeO 2 -modified WO 3 nanocubes were prepared by a simple hydrothermal method, and their gas-sensing characteristics in dry and humid atmospheres were investigated. The results show that CeO 2 /WO 3 demonstrated excellent gas-sensing properties toward H 2 S with high sensitivity and high selectivity at 115 °C. Noteworthy, the humidity independence of the CeO 2 /WO 3 increased compared to the WO 3 . The response retentions over the whole humidity range of the CeO 2 /WO 3 -6 and CeO 2 /WO 3 -15 sensors were 70.3, and 76%, respectively, which were much higher than the WO 3 sensor (17.9%). The gas-sensing mechanism of CeO 2 -modified WO 3 is discussed based on the gas sensitivity properties. Elevated blood glucose concentration is a risk factor for developing metabolic dysfunction and insulin resistance, leading to type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Nuts have the potential to inhibit α-amylase activity, and so lower postprandial glucose, due to their content of polyphenols and other bioactive compounds. We conducted a systematic literature review to assess the ability of extracts from commonly consumed edible parts of nuts to inhibit α-amylase. Among the 31 included papers, only four utilised human α-amylases. These papers indicated that polyphenol-rich chestnut skin extracts exhibited strong inhibition of both human salivary and pancreatic α-amylases, and that a polyphenol-rich almond skin extract was a potent inhibitor of human salivary α-amylase. The majority of the reviewed studies utilised porcine pancreatic α-amylase, which has ∼86% sequence homology with the corresponding human enzyme but with some key amino acid variations located within the active site. Polyphenol-rich extracts from chestnut, almond, kola nut, pecan and walnut, and peptides isolated from cashew, inhibited porcine pancreatic α-amylase. Some studies used α-amylases sourced from fungi or bacteria, outcomes from which are entirely irrelevant to human health, as they have no sequence homology with the human enzyme. Given the limited research involving human α-amylases, and the differences in inhibition compared to porcine enzymes and especially enzymes from microorganisms, it is recommended that future in vitro experiments place greater emphasis on utilising enzymes sourced from humans to facilitate a reliable prediction of effects in intervention studies.

Four-dimensional (4D) printing, combining three-dimensional (3D) printing with time-dependent stimuli-responsive shape transformation, eliminates the limitations of the conventional 3D printing technique for the fabrication of complex hollow constructs. However, existing 4D printing techniques have limitations in terms of the shapes that can be created using a single shape-changing object. In this paper, we report an advanced 4D fabrication approach for vascular junctions, particularly T-junctions, using the 4D printing technique based on coordinated sequential folding of two or more specially designed shape-changing elements. In our approach, the T-junction is split into two components, and each component is 4D printed using different synthesized shape memory polyurethanes and their nanohybrids, which have been synthesized with varying hard segment contents and by incorporating different weight percentages of photo-responsive copper sulfide-polyvinyl pyrrolidone nanoparticles. The formation of a T-junction is demonstrated by assigning different shape memory behaviors to each component of the T-junction. A cell culture study with human umbilical vein endothelial cells reveals that the cells proliferate over time, and almost 90% of cells remain viable on day 7. Finally, the formation of the T-junction in the presence of near-infrared light has been demonstrated after seeding the endothelial cells on the programmed flat surface of the two components and fluorescence microscopy at day 3 and 7 reveals that the cells adhered well and continue to proliferate over time. Hence, the proposed alternative approach has huge potential and can be used to fabricate vascular junctions in the future.

In our preceding paper (Y. Fukui et al. , Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. , 2023, 25 , 25594-25602), we reported a systematic study of the Ag + -ion conducting behaviour of silver iodide (AgI)-loaded mesoporous aluminas (MPAs) with different pore diameters and AgI-loading ratios. By optimising the control parameters, the Ag + -ion conductivity has reached 7.2 × 10 -4 S cm -1 at room temperature, which is more than three orders of magnitude higher than that of bulk AgI. In the present study, the effect of silver bromide (AgBr)-doping in the AgI/MPA composites on Ag + -ion conductivity is systematically investigated for the first time, using variable-temperature powder X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements. The AgBr-doped AgI/MPA composites, AgI-AgBr/MPA, formed a homogeneous β/γ-AgI-structured solid solution (β/γ-AgI ss ) for the composites with AgBr ≤ 10 mol%, above which the composites underwent a phase separation into β/γ-AgI ss and face-centred cubic AgBr solid solutions (AgBr ss ). The onset temperature of the exothermic peaks attributed to the transition from α-AgI-structured solid-solution phase to β/γ-AgI ss or AgBr ss decreased with increasing the AgBr-doping ratio. The room-temperature ionic conductivity of the AgI-AgBr/MPA composites exhibited a volcano-type dependence on the AgBr-doping ratio with the highest value (1.6 × 10 -3 S cm -1 ) when the AgBr content was 10 mol%. This value is more than twice as high as that of the highest conducting AgI/MPA found in our previous study.

This report covers boron tribromide (BBr 3 ) mediated dearomative spirocyclization of biaryl ynones. The direct synthesis of spiro[5.5]dienones with a tri-substituted double bond is described for the first time in this paper. The scope of the reaction is broad and the spirocyclic products were obtained in moderate to good yields.

The swelling behaviors and water retention of superabsorbent materials prepared from acrylic acid/acrylamide copolymer and acid-modified attapulgite under ultrasonic treatment and different pH conditions were investigated. The results demonstrated that a suitable amount of attapulgite can effectively improve the absorption capacity. The superabsorbent achieved the highest absorptions of 1257.54 g g -1 and 209.45 g g -1 in distilled water and a 0.9 wt% NaCl solution, and a higher water absorbency occurred over a wide pH range of 5-9 when the ultrasonic power was 200 W, and the attapulgite content was 10%. The microbial fuel cell (MFCs) has dual functions, capable of achieving dye decolorization and synchronous power generation. Despite these advantages, the MFCs have faced challenges related to low electron transfer efficiencies and limited dye treatment capacity in wastewater applications. This work introduces an innovative approach by employing reduced graphene oxide-modified carbon cloth (TP-RGO@CC) anodes, utilizing tea polyphenols as the reducing agent. This modification significantly enhances the hydrophilicity and biocompatibility of the anodes. The MFC equipped with the TP-RGO@CC anode demonstrated a remarkable increase in the maximum power density, reaching 773.9 mW m -2 , representing a 22% improvement over the plain carbon cloth electrode. The decolorization rate of methyl orange (50 mg L -1 , pH 7) reached 99% within 48 h. Biodiversity analysis revealed that the TP-RGO@CC anode selectively enriched electrogens producing and organic matter-degrading bacteria, promoting a dual mechanism of dye decolorization, degradation, and simultaneous electro-production at the anode. The global outbreak of monkeypox virus (MPXV) has highlighted the need for rapid molecular diagnostics techniques. In this study, a single-step recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA)-CRISPR/Cas12a system was developed for rapid and sensitive detection of MPXV. The limit of detection of this assay was 1 copy per μL of extracted nucleic acids. A heating lysis method was integrated to further simplify the sample processing workflow and shorten the assay time to 40 min from sample to result. The reaction mixture can be lyophilized to improve its accessibility in resource-limited settings. The analysis results of the proposed single-step RPA-CRISPR/Cas12a assay for clinical MPXV positive and negative samples were 100% consistent with standard PCR assay. ABA triblock copolymers can form microphase separated structures where the B blocks form bridges between A domains, leading to reversible networks interesting for a variety of applications such as pressure sensitive adhesives or thermoplastic elastomers. However, a major drawback of these systems is their rapid loss of mechanical properties upon temperature increase. A potential way to circumvent this limitation would be to design ABA triblock copolymers that keep their microphase separation at high temperatures. In this paper, we report on all-soft ABA triblock copolymers having a poly( n -butyl acrylate) (P n BA) central block and poly(heptafluorobutyl acrylate) (PHFBA) outer blocks. By introducing fluorinated units, the incompatibility between the blocks is largely increased, allowing strong segregation between the block domains, which preserve the microphase separation up to high temperatures despite the low glass transition temperature of the blocks, as shown by temperature dependent SAXS measurements. We study the properties of different copolymers, with similar PHFBA volume fractions but different block lengths. Linear shear rheology measurements revealed the presence of a second, low frequency, plateau whose onset and length depend on the P n BA and PHFBA length, respectively. This plateau also persists up to higher temperatures for longer PHFBA blocks.

In QDSSCs, a photoanode is an important part of connecting the external circuit, providing support for the transmission of photogenerated carriers to the external circuit, and also providing an attachment site for QDs. In this study, we prepared a g-C 3 N 4 @TiO 2 composite for the photoanode by a two-step process. The results show that the use of g-C 3 N 4 @TiO 2 greatly increases the specific surface area of the material, effectively inhibits the "electron-hole" recombination, and optimizes the stability and catalytic performance of the photoanode. Among them, the cell equipped with the g-C 3 N 4 @TiO 2 photoanode has improved performance: J sc = 26.5 mA cm -2 = 0.62 eV, and FF = 0.50. Based on the research in this paper, it can be seen that the g-C V oc = 0.62 eV, and FF = 0.50. Based on the research in this paper, it can be seen that the g-C 3 N 4 @TiO 2 composite applied to the photoanode can effectively improve the cell performance and provide a feasible idea for optimizing QDSSCs.

Consequently, through continuous exploration and development, an escalating array of natural bioactive ingredients is finding application in both nutrition delivery and the broader food industry. Chlorogenic acid (CGA), a polyphenolic compound widely distributed in various plants in nature, has garnered significant attention. Abundant research underscores CGA's robust biological activity, showcasing notable preventive and therapeutic efficacy across diverse diseases. This article commences with a comprehensive overview, summarizing the dietary sources and primary biological activities of CGA. These encompass antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, anti-cancer, and neuroprotective activities. Next, a comprehensive overview of the current research on nutrient delivery systems incorporating CGA is provided. This exploration encompasses nanoparticle, liposome, hydrogel, and emulsion delivery systems. Additionally, the article explores the latest applications of CGA in the food industry. Serving as a cutting-edge theoretical foundation, this paper contributes to the design and development of CGA in the realms of nutrition delivery and the food industry. Finally, the article presents informed speculations and considerations for the future development of CGA.

The paper reports on the synthesis, crystal structure, thermal and magnetic properties of spin crossover (SCO) salts containing the [Fe(bpp) 2 ] 2+ cation (bpp = 2,6-bis(pyrazol-3-yl)pyridine) and different rigid polycarboxylate anions, such as anthracene-9,10-dicarboxylate (ADC), benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (BTC) and biphenyl-4,4'-dicarboxylate (BPDC). Compound [Fe(bpp) 2 ](ADC)·9H 2 O (1) shows a porous hydrogen-bonded structure with water molecules sitting in the channels. It contains low-spin (LS) Fe 2+ cations that undergo crossover to the high-spin (HS) state upon dehydration. Anhydrous 1 remains HS on cooling at low temperatures. A similar magnetic behaviour is obtained for the partially protonated BTC salt [Fe(bpp) 2 ](HBTC)·5H 2 O (2), showing a spin change concomitant with dehydration to a HS phase that undergoes gradual and partial SCO on cooling, affecting 25% of the Fe 2+ cations. Instead, the BPDC salt [Fe(bpp) 2 ](BPDC)·5H 2 O (3) has a ground HS state in its fully hydrated form.

Vacancies, as well as their derivatives, usually play a crucial role in many essential properties of materials. However, they always behave erratically, especially under universal thermal vibration, and are therefore difficult to accurately locate. Until now, the lack of an accurate and flexible method for locating and identifying vacancies has hampered the development of relative fields. In this paper, we present a new method to solve this problem. The strategy is to target the atomic cage enwrapping vacancies instead of the vacancies themselves. The core of the method is a time-averaged atomic volume spectrum (TAVS). The key to this method is to identify atoms using time-averaged rather than transient atomic volume, thereby simultaneously denoising intrinsic thermal vibration and avoiding vacancy migration jump. Using this method, we have succeeded for the first time in obtaining the panoramic maps of spontaneously trapped defects in quenched and annealed face-centered cubic aluminum and even the instantaneous images of a steady trapping process. All characteristics of each trapped vacancy, including location, dimension, volume and morphology, as well as aggregate statistical data such as vacancy amount and concentration, can be completely and accurately obtained. Furthermore, these first maps of defects (vacancies) revealed some surprising and interesting phenomena for future exploration. In conclusion, this method provides not only a means of locating and catching vacancies, but also a strategy for identifying and characterizing vacancies. On the basis of its successful application in FCC Al, the TAVS method can be easily extended to other systems as well.

Cereals are the main source of energy in the human diet. Compared to refined grains, whole grains retain more beneficial components, including dietary fiber, polyphenols, proteins, vitamins, and minerals. Dietary fiber and bound polyphenols (biounavailable) in cereals are important active substances that can be metabolized by the gut microorganisms and affect the intestinal environment. There is a close relationship between the gut microbiota structures and various disease phenotypes, although the consistency of this link is affected by many factors, and the specific mechanisms are still unclear. Remodeling unfavorable microbiota is widely recognized as an important way to target the gut and improve diseases. This paper mainly reviews the interaction between the gut microbiota and cereal-derived dietary fiber and polyphenols, and also summarizes the changes to the gut microbiota and possible molecular mechanisms of related glycolipid metabolism. The exploration of single active ingredients in cereals and their synergistic health mechanisms will contribute to a better understanding of the health benefits of whole grains. It will further help promote healthier whole grain foods by cultivating new varieties with more potential and optimizing processing methods.

ZnO nanomaterials have been extensively used as photocatalysts for the removal of pollutants in aqueous environments. This study explores the enhanced photocatalytic performance of porous ZnO coral-like nanoplates synthesized via a one-pot wet-chemical method and subsequent annealing treatment. Characterization through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Raman spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) measurements confirmed the nanoplates' porous structure, single-crystal structure, 100 nm thickness, and 80 nm pore size. These unique structural characteristics of the ZnO coral-like nanoplates enabled effective photodegradation of the organic dye rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light irradiation. Under simulated sunlight, the ZnO photocatalyst exhibited exceptional performance, achieving a 97.3% removal rate of RhB after 210 minutes of irradiation. The prepared ZnO photocatalyst also showed remarkable photostability and regeneration capability for RhB photodegradation with a decreased efficiency of less than 15% after eight testing cycles. Despite extensive research in the literature, the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) via capping mechanisms remains incompletely understood. This study employs a mechanistic approach to unravel the underlying molecular interactions driving the capping process of biogenic vaterite CaCO 3 -Ag and explores their interactions with different polymer matrices. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to reveal the capping mechanisms, surface composition alterations, and vaterite polymorph transitions. The oxidation states of AgNPs exhibited distinct changes under different capping agents. The Ag3d spin-orbit splitting profiles revealed the coexistence of Ag + and Ag 0 within CaCO 3 -Ag, with a significant presence of Ag 0 when poly(sodium 4-styrene sulfonate) was employed as the capping agent. Conversely, the use of carboxy methyl cellulose as the capping agent resulted in Ag + dominance. XPS analysis illuminated the transformation of CaCO 3 polymorphs from calcite to vaterite structure, which remained stable following embedding within polymer matrices.
