Mercury ions (Hg 2+ ) are highly toxic heavy metals that are commonly found in natural environments. Owning to their non-biodegradability and accumulation in the food chain, the precise detection of trace amounts of Hg 2+ is essential for preventing chronic accumulation and ensuring food safety. In this study, we present a dual-mode paper sensor for simultaneous colorimetric and Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) detection of Hg 2+ in tea, achieving ultrasensitive, rapid, and on-site screening. 4-Mercaptopyridine (4-MPY) was effectively chemisorbed onto the gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), acting as a signal probe for colorimetric methods. Moreover, it can produce plasmonic hot spots for SERS by interacting with the pyridine ring. To enhance the signal intensity of both colorimetry and SERS, a silver shell is in-situ grown on the surface of AuNPs captured on the paper sensor by reduction of Ag + , achieving signal amplification. The visual limit of detection (LOD) for the colorimetric biosensor is 2.5 pM, while the LOD of SERS is 0.48 pM with this dual-mode paper sensor. The sensitivity of both the colorimetric method and SERS was improved by approximately 200 and 500 times, respectively, with the designed signal amplification strategy. The system allows for multiple parallel screening of the same sample, ensuring accurate results without any false-positive or false-negative. A rapid user-friendly paper-based test strip using zinc microparticles in conjugation with Griess reagent was developed for nitrite and nitrate detection. Test strips were fabricated using a simple and fast method of step-by-step immersion into reagents so that each strip contained a single detection pad for nitrite detection and another separate pad for nitrate detection. To reduce nitrate to nitrite, zinc microparticles suspended in ethanolic solution of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) were uniformly immobilized on the paper strips that were previously impregnated in the Griess reagent and dried. The Griess reagent components were optimized to reach the highest color intensity. The optimized test strip was able to determine both nitrite and nitrate with respective detection limits of 0.43 and 9.43 mg/kg and a detection time of 60 s. Rapid and precise detection of harmful substances in food products is essential for ensuring public health and safety. This study introduces a novel surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrate, composed of a molybdenum disulfide‑silver nanocomposite, applied to flexible, water-resistant filter paper for detecting melamine and bisphenol A (BPA) in milk. Optimized molybdenum disulfide (NMS) nanoflowers (NFs) were synthesized through hydrothermal methods and high-temperature annealing, then modified with silver (Ag) nanoparticles to form the NMS-Ag nanocomposite (NMSA 6 ). This substrate greatly enhances the Raman signal, achieving an enhancement factor of approximately 1.49 × 10 7 and a detection limit as low as 10 -11  M for simultaneous multi-component analysis. Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations confirm the enhancement mechanism. The NMSA 6 substrate demonstrates remarkably low detection limits for BPA and melamine, facilitating the analysis of various hazardous substances. Pulp and paper wastewater sludges are waste streams produced in major quantities across the world. The recycling of these organic sludges, for example to soil amendments, is desired in the circular economy but carries the risk of potential pollutants to be also introduced into the environment. Pulp and paper wastewater sludges have been scarcely studied matrices in the microplastic research due to their complex composition. In this study, we optimized an extraction process for microplastics from pulp and paper wastewater sludges, and quantified and characterized microplastics down to 20 μm in primary sludge and biosludge generated at the wastewater treatment plant of a multi-product pulp and paper mill in Finland. The occurrence of microplastics was high in primary sludge, 900-1600 microplastics g -1 dry weight, while the maximum number of detected microplastics in biosludge samples remained at 210 g -1 dry weight. Biosludge samples suffered from larger amounts of remaining solids after the extraction process, thus compromising the detection of smaller microplastics (<100 μm) and increasing the uncertainty related to the interpretation of the results. The most prevalent microplastic shape in all samples was fragment, and the most recurring polymer types were polyethylene and polypropylene, while a polystyrene-based copolymer represented approximately 10% of identified microplastics in primary sludge. Developing a non-toxic, cost-effective, and user-friendly indicator for detecting milk freshness and spoilage, with potential applications in smart packaging, presents a significant challenge. In this study, we extracted natural anthocyanins (ACNs) from Jaman (Syzgium cumini) and incorporated it in to filter paper. The presence of ACNs in the extract was confirmed through UPLC-MS/MS analysis. To enhance stability and prevent leaching, the ACNs-loaded filter paper was coated with 1 % chitosan (CH). The sensor strips were thoroughly characterized using FTIR, contact angle measurements, XRD, and FE-SEM. These strips displayed a distinct and quantifiable color change from red to colorless to yellow across different pH levels. Additionally, in real-time milk spoilage detection, the sensor transitioned from light purple to colorless. The strips demonstrated reproducibility and stability, even under high temperatures and extreme pH conditions. The accurate monitoring of sulfide ion concentrations is vital for ensuring food safety, but current detection methods are often cumbersome and confined to laboratories. This study introduces an innovative paper-based colorimetric sensor that leverages the peroxidase-like activity of cobalt tetrasulfonate phthalocyanine (CoTsPc) for rapid, sensitive, and selective sulfide ion quantification. The underlying mechanism relies on the interaction between cobalt and sulfide ions, modulating the catalytic efficiency of CoTsPc and triggering a visible color change when 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and hydrogen peroxide are present. By controlling solvent evaporation, the reaction kinetics are standardized, enabling reproducible and accurate colorimetric measurements. Experimental results show that adding sulfide ions to the TMB-H₂O₂ reaction system causes a gradual decrease in color intensity on the paper substrate. A novel type of colorimetric/fluorescent nanopaper indicator has been developed from the melt-extruded poly (vinyl alcohol-co-ethylene) nanofibers with surface anchored metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) by an interfacial coordination strategy. Specifically, the fluorescein isothiocyanate molecules could be anchored to the nanofiber surface by nickel ions and co-assembled into a hydrophilic nanocoating via a dynamic water/alcohol solvent evaporation method. Interestingly, this hydrophilic surface enables fast adsorption of moistures and interaction with biological amine vapors, resulting a saffron cake-layer of MOF nanocrystals with ultra-sensitive colorimetric/fluorescent responses based on an alkaline pH/ammonia induced competitive coordination mechanism. Finally, these porous nanofibrous matrix and active nanocoating make the nano-paper an ultra-sensitive optical platform for in-situ monitoring of the shrimp freshness from mins to weeks. Recently, fiber-based and functional paper food packaging has garnered significant attention for its versatility, excellent performance, and potential to provide sustainable solutions to the food packaging industry. Fiber-based food packaging is characterized by its large surface area, adjustable porosity and customizability, while functional paper-based food packaging typically exhibits good mechanical strength and barrier properties. This review summarizes the latest research progress on food packaging based on fibers and functional paper. Firstly, the raw materials used for preparing fiber and functional paper, along with their physical and chemical properties and roles in food packaging, were discussed. Subsequently, the latest advancements in the application of fiber and paper materials in food packaging were introduced. Paper chip as a representative microfluidic device has been mushroomed for rapid identification of contaminants in agro-food. However, the sensitivity and accuracy have still been challenged by inevitable background noise or interference in food matrix. Herein, we designed and fabricated a dual-mode paper chip (DPC) by assembling a patterned paper electrode with a platinum nanoparticles-treated colorimetric region through a flow channel. Dual-mode outputs were guided by an aptamer-gated UiO-66-NH 2 metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). UiO-66-NH 2 loaded with 3, 3', 5, 5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) was controlled by a switch comprised of CdS quantum dots-aptamer. Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1, a kind of carcinogenic mycotoxin) target came and induced TMB release, triggering colorimetric and ECL signals on DPC, ultra-high sensitivity with a detection limit of 7.8 fg/mL was realized. The practicability of the DPC was also confirmed by spiking AFB1 in real corn samples. A colorimetric sensing method based on a paper-based vapor-test kit was successfully developed for the selective and sensitive real-time monitoring of formalin in food samples. The device was specifically designed to efficiently extract and detect formalin simultaneously. A microcentrifuge tube was used as the sample solution container, with the inner cap serving as the reaction and detection zone. Formalin was converted into gaseous formaldehyde through controlled heating, which was then extracted and collected on a filter paper coated with Nash's reagent. The color change on paper was used for formalin quantification using a smartphone for detection and image analysis. Under optimal conditions, our method provided a linear range of 0.5-75 mg L -1 with a detection limit of 0.11 mg L -1 . Staphylococcus aureus contamination continues to be a harmful foodborne pathogen threatening of human health, and there is a growing need for rapid detection technologies. This study proposed a novel paper biosensor based on a polydiacetylene (PDA) polymer functionalized fibrinogen (Fg) for the detection of S. aureus in food sources. The fluorophore was developed based on the high binding ability of fibrinogen-binding proteins on the surface of S. aureus. This binding caused twisting in the PDA backbone, leading to changes in chromatic and fluorescent. The detection limit of this method was 50.1 CFU/mL for S. aureus-contaminated foodstuffs and 65.0 CFU/mL for the pure S. aureus culture, and the novelty came from its rapidity and selectivity for S. aureus compared to other foodborne bacteria. Furfurals, including 2-furaldehyde, 5-methylfurfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, widely exist in carbohydrate-rich daily foods, and may have toxic effects on humans. Here, a new headspace extraction-paper spray mass spectrometry (HSPS-MS/MS) method was established for furfural detection, in which the extraction and derivatization of volatiles with pre-loaded derivatization agent on paper tips is combined with paper spray mass spectrometry for detection. By this simple and cheap approach, interference of non-volatile matrix compounds is prevented, and the derivatization agent improves electrospray-type ionization efficiency, thus increasing selectivity and sensitivity. The approach was optimized, by investigating positioning during extraction, extraction duration, derivatization agent, addition of internal standard for quantification and finally validated. For this, the developed method was benchmarked against HPLC-UV and could obtain detections limits of 0.32-0.40 μg mL -1 for 2-furaldehyde, 5-methylfurfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural in olive oil. Given the significant and potential fatal implications of glyphosate (GLY) residues on human health and the integrity of ecosystems, their presence has garnered substantial global concern and scrutiny. Herein, we introduced a pioneering colorimetric sensing platform, the first of its kind, based on ternary metal-organic frameworks (ZnCo-ZIFs@MIL-101(Fe)). This innovative platform enabled ultra-sensitive, affordable, portable and rapid on-site detection of GLY. This platform achieved a wider linear range for GLY of 0.02-40 μg/mL with an exhibiting remarkable detection limit of 1 ng/mL, which was attributed to the electronic hybridization of the Fe 3+ , Co 2+ , and Zn 2+ metal centers of ZnCo-ZIFs@MIL-101(Fe), significantly enhancing the composite's catalytic performance. The assay was successfully employed to detect GLY in food and herb samples. Moreover, to meet the demand of in-field detection for GLY, a smartphone detection method based on ZnCo-ZIFs@MIL-101(Fe) with visual, intelligent, and portable features was fabricated. This detection concentration range of GLY was 0-1 μg/mL, and the limit of smartphone detection was 23 ng/mL. Furthermore, this sensor seamlessly integrated with smartphones and paper-based microfluidic chips (μPADs), which constructed a portable test strips-smartphone sensing platform for facilitating real-time and on-site visual quantitative detection of GLY. The detection concentration range was 0-1 μg/mL, and the limit was calculated as low as 75 ng/mL. The assay was highly adaptable in practical applications. The increasing prevalence of arsenic (As 3+ ) in water and its health impacts necessitate advanced detection methods. Similarly, monitoring L-Cysteine, a vital thiol-containing amino acid, is crucial for assessing physiological processes and disorders. This study presents a novel method for detecting As 3+ and L-Cysteine in food samples using 4-amino-3-(D-galactopentitol-1-yl)-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole (AMTPP) functionalized silver nanoparticles (AMTPP-AgNPs) by UV/Vis spectrophotometric method and smartphone-assisted inkjet-printed paper-based sensors. AMTPP-AgNPs, synthesized through a detailed process, show exceptional selectivity and sensitivity to As 3+ and L-Cysteine, undisturbed by other metal ions and amino acids. Characterization techniques like FTIR, DLS, Zeta Potential, AFM, and SEM detailed their morphological and interaction properties. Optimizing detection parameters, such as response time, pH, and temperature, improved sensitivity and achieved low detection limits. The limits of detection (LODs) were 0.0052 μM for L-cysteine and 0.0092 μM for As 3+ , as calculated using UV-Vis spectrophotometric methods. The method also demonstrated high recovery rates in spiked meat and corn samples. The nanozyme-based colorimetric sensor shows promise for rapid pesticide detection but struggles with non-specific enzyme inhibition. This study developed a portable paper-based sensor for detecting the propiconazole (PC) pesticide using Fe@PCN-224 nanocubes (NCs). Characterization confirmed the successful synthesis of Fe@PCN-224 NCs, which displayed peroxidase-like activity. The specific interaction between PC's triazole ring and the Fe active site inhibited their activity, enabling selective detection with a limit of 8 × 10 -9  mol L -1 and a linear range of 0.03 × 10 -6 to 0.90 × 10 -6  mol L -1 . Kinetic studies revealed a Michaelis-Menten constants (K m ) of 0.68 × 10 -3  mol L -1 for TMB, indicating higher affinity in Fe@PCN-224 NCs. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis revealed the production of •OH, 1 O 2 , O 2 • - during the catalytic reactions. A novel approach combing a fluorescent microfluidic paper strip with a portable smartphone-based sensing platform is developed for rapid and sensitive detection of omethoate pesticide. The detection mechanism of the microfluidic paper strip is based on the fluorescence quenching of graphene oxide (GO) toward the cyanine 3 (Cy3)-labeled aptamer (Cy3-APT). Upon exposure to omethoate, the Cy3-APT detaches from the surface of GO, resulting in considerable fluorescence recovery, which can be visualized through the smartphone-based sensing platform. The images are analyzed through a self-developed app embedded with a pretrained convolutional neural network model, achieving a high regression coefficient of 0.9964 at an omethoate concentration range of 0-750 nM. The smartphone-based platform enables rapid on-site detection of omethoate pesticide in real samples within 10 min, with results comparable to those obtained using standard methods. The objective of this study was to develop and validate a novel microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPAD pH ) for determining the pH levels in foods. Anthocyanins from red cabbage aqueous extract (RCAE) were used as its analytical sensor. Whatman No. 1 filter paper was the most suitable for the device due to its porosity and fiber organization, which allows for maximum color intensity and minimal color heterogeneity of the RCAE in the detection zone of the μPAD pH . To ensure the color stability of the RCAE for commercial use of the μPAD pH , gum arabic was added. The geometric design of the μPAD pH , including the channel length and separation zone diameter, was systematically optimized using colored food. The validation showed that the μPAD pH did not differ from the pH meter when analyzing natural foods. The improper use of organophosphate pesticides (OPs) can lead to residue posing a serious threat to human health and environment. Therefore, the development of a simple, portable, and sensitive detection method is crucial. Herein, a bioenzyme-nanozyme-chromogen all-in-one paper-based sensor was synthesized. Initially, the Ce/Zr-MOF with peroxidase-like activity was grown on filter paper (FP) using in-situ solvent thermal method, resulting in Ce/Zr-MOF@FP. Subsequently, the AChE-ChO-TMB system was immobilized onto Ce/Zr-MOF@FP using biocompatible gelatin, which enhanced cascade catalysis efficiency through the proximity effect. Based on the inhibition principle of OPs on AChE, we integrated this sensor with Python-based image recognition algorithm to achieve detection of OPs. Using 2,2-dichlorovinyl dimethyl phosphate (DDVP) as a model of OPs, it has good detection performance with a detection limit of 0.32 ng mL -1 and a recovery rate range of 95-107%. The on-site detection of mancozeb in food samples holds immense value for food safety. A red-fluorescent europium complex (Eu-PYDC-Phen) has been prepared and employed as a fluorescence probe for mancozeb detection. The optimized probe suspension exhibits excellent detection performances, including a wide linear range (0-0.24 mM), low detection limit (65 nM), rapid response (2 mins) and high selectivity. Moreover, a portable detection platform was carefully designed, integrating the Eu-PYDC-Phen-based fluorescent test strips with smartphone color recognition software. This innovative platform enables visual and on-site detection of mancozeb in tomato, apple, and lettuce, achieving satisfactory recovery rates (90.34 to 106.50%). Furthermore, the integration of machine learning techniques based on hierarchical clustering algorithm has the potential to further improve the prediction and decision-making efficiency in mancozeb detection. The long-term and excessive use of glyphosate (GLY) in diverse matrices has caused serious hazard to the human and environment. However, the ultrasensitive detection of GLY still remains challenging. In this study, the smartphone-assisted dual-signal mode ratiometric fluorescent and paper sensors based on the red-emissive gold nanoclusters (R-AuNCs) and blue-emissive carbon dots (B-CDs) were ingeniously designed accurate and sensitive detection of GLY. Upon the presence of GLY, it would quench the fluorescence of B-CDs through dynamic quenching effect, and strengthen the fluorescence response of R-AuNCs due to aggregation-induced enhancement effect. Through calculating the GLY-induced fluorescence intensity ratio of B-CDs to R-AuNCs by using a fluorescence spectrophotometer, low to 0.218 μg/mL of GLY could be detected in lab in a wide concentration range of 0.3-12 μg/mL with high recovery of 94.7-103.1% in the spiked malt samples. The smartphone-assisted ratiometric fluorescent sensor achieved in the 96-well plate could monitor 0-11 μg/mL of GLY with satisfactory recovery of 94.1-107.0% in real edible malt matrices for high-throughput analysis. In addition, a portable smartphone-assisted ratiometric paper sensor established through directly depositing the combined B-CDs/R-AuNCs probes on the test strip could realize on-site measurement of 2-8 μg/mL of GLY with good linear relationship. In this study, a hydrothermal process was utilized to grow mixed-valence CuFe 2 O 4 /Cu 0 nanosheets on carbon fiber paper, forming a three-dimensional hierarchical electrode (CuFe 2 O 4 /Cu 0 @CFP). The ordered array structure, coupled with the porous bowl-like structure, enhances the exposure of more electrode active sites and facilitates analyte penetration, thus enhancing the electrode sensing performance. We reported the development of a smartphone-integrated microfluidic paper-based optosensing platform for in-situ detection and quantification of histamine in canned tuna. Molecularly imprinted polymers were synthesized via precipitation polymerization and utilized as dispersive solid phase extraction sorbent to selectively extract histamine from canned tuna. Carbon quantum dots functioning as a fluorescent probe were synthesized and introduced onto the microzones of the microfluidic paper device. This facilitated a noticeable fluorescence color change from dark red to vivid blue upon the addition of histamine. The change in fluorescence on the paper device was converted into specific RGB values using a portable UV light box combined with a smartphone. This assay achieved the limit of detection of 14.04 mg/kg with the linear range from 20 to 100 mg/kg of histamine in canned tuna. Carbaryl is a broad-spectrum carbamate fungicide that may pose a threat to ecosystems and human health. To prevent and control the harm caused by excessive application of carbaryl, a full-dimensional divergence effect SERS sensor has been constructed. Biodegradable paper chips were used as sensor substrates. ZIF-8 with structural flexibility was grown in situ on carbon paper. A rough silver layer with surface like metal etching was clad outside the ZIF-8. Artificial antibody (AAB) with accurate grasping ability was polymerized on the surface of ZIF-8@Ag paper substrate. Au@Ag CSNPs were decorated on the AAB to provide abundant "hot spots". Every functional material layer works together to form a gap and tip region with superior plasmon resonance. Transparent cellulose papers have emerged as a promising substrate and/or functional component for next-generation sustainable flexible electronics. However, obtaining transparent paper with folding endurance comparable to that of plastic films such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) remains a major challenge, which was addressed in this study by modulating the multiscale structure (from molecular structure, aggregation structure to fibrous morphology) of wood fibers. Compared to the natural wood fibers, the modified fibers not only retained their length and cellulose degree of polymerization (DP) to a large extent, but also had lower crystallinity and improved swelling capability, which well preserved the fiber strength and dense intertwined fiber network, and led to stronger inter-fiber interactions in the final transparent paper. The obtained paper (CM-paper) exhibits an optical transparency of 91 % and a folding endurance of 37,466 times, comparable to that of commercial PET (39,955 folds). Furthermore, the underlying mechanism for the superior foldability of the transparent paper was unveiled at three scales is explored. Finally, the potential application of CM-paper in electromagnetic induction electrodes was demonstrated, where the CM-paper electrodes exhibit satisfactory conductivity after repeated rubbing. Cash register receipts made of thermal paper expose workers and shoppers to endocrine-disrupting chemicals and contaminate paper recycling streams. In 2022, 571 receipts were collected from retail stores in the United States and tested for developer chemicals using attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy. The results were compared to a 2017 study of 167 receipts to determine changes in color developer use over time. Receipts were tested as-is and a subset were additionally subjected to a simple extraction that improved detection of receipt chemicals. Bisphenol S was the most frequently detected developer (85% of tested receipts), followed by Pergafast 201 (12%), bisphenol A (1%); and Appvion Alpha Free, D-8, and NKK-1304 (each below 1%). NKK-1304 is reported here for the first time in a scientific journal. The frequency of bisphenol A usage in receipts decreased and the frequency of bisphenol S and Pergafast 201 increased between 2017 and 2022, particularly among large companies. National retailers were more likely than regional or local retailers to have adopted non-bisphenol alternatives. Orientationally immobilized enzyme microreactors (OIMERs), embedded in microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) were developed for improved detection of pesticide residues in food. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) was orientationally immobilized on the reusable Part I of the μPADs, using the specific affinity binding of concanavalin A (Con A) to a glycosyl group on AChE. Using the disposable Part II, facile colorimetric quantification was performed with a smartphone and software, or qualitative detection by a naked-eye visual test. The AChE immobilized in OIMERs not only had improved activity and stability, but also high sensitivity, with a limit of detection as low as (0.007 ± 0.003) μg/mL. The method was used to detect pesticides residues in real vegetable samples; the recovery (88.6-102.7%) showed high reliability for pesticide residues detection in foods. Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC), due to its inherent nanometric scale and strength properties, can be considered as a good candidate to be used in papermaking. This work explored the possibility of using it in the production of fine paper as a wet-end component and for the paper coating. Filler-containing handsheet production was performed with and without the presence of common additives typically used in the furnish of office papers. It was found that, under optimized conditions, BNC mechanically treated by high-pressure homogenization could improve all the evaluated paper properties (mechanical, optical and structural) without impairing the filler retention. However, paper strength was improved only to a small extent (increase in the tensile index of 8 % for a filler content of ca. 27.5 %). On the other hand, when used at the paper surface, remarkable improvements in the gamut area of >25 % in comparison to the base paper and of >40 % in comparison to starch-only coated papers were achieved for a formulation having 50 % BNC and 50 % of carboxymethylcellulose. In the quest for greener and more efficient energy storage solutions, the exploration and utilization of renewable raw materials is essential. In this context, cellulose-derived separators play a central role in enhancing the performance of green energy storage devices. However, these often exhibit disadvantageous porosity and limited wet strength. Here, we demonstrate a facile approach to tailor thickness (ca. 40 μm), air permeability (0.1-200 cm 3 s -1 ), and mechanical properties of separators by integration of up to 50 wt% microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) into paper sheets. While the MFC enhanced the formation of dense networks, these separators show a poor dimensional stability (folding and creasing) concomitant with a low strength under wet conditions, crucial for assembly and operation. Crosslinking with 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA) however, led to an increase in wet strength by up to 6700 % while ensuring dimensional stability. The electrochemical performance, evaluated by impedance spectroscopy and galvanostatic cycling (7500 repetitions) showed comparable results as commercially available glass and polypropylene separators in terms of ion diffusion, charge-discharge rate performance, Ohmic loss and capacitance retention %. Tricyclazole is commonly used to prevent rice blast to meet the carbohydrate intake needs of half of the global population, and a large number of toxicological reports indicate that monitoring of tricyclazole is necessary. Here, we analyzed the structure of tricyclazole and designed different hapten derivatization strategies to prepare a high-performance monoclonal antibody (half inhibition concentration of 1.61 ng/mL), and then a lateral flow immunochromatographic sensor based on gold nanoparticles for the detection of tricyclazole in rice, with a limit of detection of 6.74 μg/kg and 13.58 μg/kg in polished and brown rice, respectively. The recoveries in rice were in the range of 84.6-107.4%, no complex pretreatment was required for comparison with LC-MS/MS, and the comparative analysis demonstrated that our method had good accuracy and precision. Cellulose microspheres (CMS) are a type of spherical regenerated cellulose particles with versatile properties which have been used as carrier materials in medical and technical applications. The integration of CMS into paper products opens up novel application scenarios for paper products in a wide range of fields. However, the incorporation of CMS carriers into paper products is challenging and hitherto no reports do exist in literature. Here, we present a feasibility study to incorporate up to 50 w.% CMS in paper hand sheets using retention aids. Our primary observations highlight the successful formation of uniform paper hand sheets retaining its tensile strengths at elevated CMS concentrations. Sheets with high CMS contents exhibit an increase in density and display enhanced surface smoothness - an outcome of a CMS layer forming atop the fiber base - which effectively bridges voids and rectifies surface irregularities as supported by Gurley testing, infinite focus microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. This review focuses on methods and processes for the preparation of cellulose-derived transparent papers, highlighting the characterization of raw materials linked to responses to different properties, such as optical and mechanical properties. This study prepared a novel, portable and cost-effective microfluidic paper-based electrochemical analysis device (μ-PAD) using black phosphorus nanosheets@carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (BPNSs@MWCNTs-COOH) nanocomposites for β-lactoglobulin (β-LG) detection. At the appreciate ratio, the synthesized BPNSs@MWCNTs-COOH was demonstrated to not only serve as a high-quality substrate for the specific aptamer immobilization, but also improve the electron transfer capability of the sensing interface. The μ-PADs, utilizing BPNSs@MWCNTs-COOH and aptamer recognition, exhibited a wider detection range (10-1000 ng mL -1 ) and lower detection limit (LOD: 0.12 ng mL -1 ) for β-LG, and demonstrated enhanced specificity, satisfactory anti-interference ability and stability. When applied to the β-LG determination in dairy samples, the μ-PAD yielded β-LG concentrations highly correlated with those obtained using the HPLC method (R 2 : 0.9982). The development of a rapid and convenient detection method for nitrofurantoin (NFT) residual is of great significance for food safety. Herein, a new fluorescent probe (Eu-TDCA-Phen) was developed for the visual and sensitive assay of NFT through the fluorescence quenching effect of inner filter effect (IFE) and photo-induced electron transfer (PET). The probe suspension demonstrates a wide linear range (0-0.16 mM), low detection limit (90 nM), high sensitivity, and rapid response time (2 min) in the "turn-off" process. To quantify the visual detection process, a smartphone-assisted test paper sensing platform was established and was applied for NFT determination in real honey samples, achieving satisfactory recovery rate ranges from 98.04 % to 105.04 %. The fabrication of coated papers using hydrophilic and biodegradable polymers is important for developing sustainable packaging materials with high barrier and superior mechanical properties. However, water, which is used as the solvent in the paper coating process using hydrophilic polymers, deforms the shape of the paper and deteriorates performance. Therefore, we propose a new coating process that treats Kraft paper (KP) with epichlorohydrin (ECH) as a binder before the coating process. Crosslinked polyvinyl alcohol is coated on the ECH-treated KP using a solution casting method. ECH maintains the shape of the paper and improves coating uniformity; significantly enhances interfacial interactions, which increases barrier properties and sealing strength; and extends the shelf life of biscuits by reducing oxygen and moisture permeability. An ecotoxicity test using Lolium multiflorum demonstrates an insignificant phytotoxicity level for the as-prepared coated papers. The addition of Sudan dyes with carcinogenic effects to food threatens human health. Herein, a ratiometric fluorescence strip consisting of core-shell upconversion particles (NaYF 4 :Yb,Tm@NaYF 4 :Yb,Er), metal-organic frameworks and dual-template molecularly imprinted polymers was developed to selectively and sensitively detect four Sudan dyes based on inner filter effect (detection time only takes 8 min). The high adsorption capacity of metal-organic frameworks and the greater overlap between the emission of NaYF 4 :Yb,Tm@NaYF 4 :Yb,Er and the absorbance of four Sudan dyes enable the signal responses to be more sensitive. The limits of detection in chilli powder samples are as low as 29.87 ng/g, 37.55 ng/g, 47.89 ng/g and 51.02 ng/g, with satisfactory recovery (93.32-103.4%) and minor relative standard deviations (≤4.3%). To date, flexible pressure sensors built on silver nanowires (AgNWs) have attracted tremendous attention, owing to their versatile applications in wearable, human-interactive, health-monitoring devices. Cellulose and its derivatives, which show great promise in serving flexible pressure sensors as the desired substrate due to their natural abundance, biocompatibility, easy processibility, and low costs. Herein, we reported a rational strategy to design a silver nanowires-dual-cellulose conductive paper. Its morphology, chemical and crystal structures, thermal stability, mechanical performances, and electrical properties were carefully studied. The results suggested that good tensile properties (tensile strength ≤8.10 MPa), high electrical conductivity (≤ 1.74 × 10 4  S·m -1 ) with long-term stability, and good adhesion stability (bending cycles over 500) were obtained. Pymetrozine (PYM) is an effective pyridine insecticide for controlling aphids, while its residues pose a serious threat to human health. Herein, a europium complex (Eu-DBPA, DBPA represents deprotonated 2,5-dibromoterephthalic acid ligand) probe was prepared for the detection of PYM via fluorescence quenching. The detection process has the advantages of short response time (2 min), wide linear range (0-4 and 4-45 mg/kg) and low detection limit (2.2 μg/kg). Furthermore, a portable detection platform was designed by integrating Eu-DBPA-based paper strip with smartphone and applied for the visual detection of PYM in real cucumber, tomato, cabbage and apple samples, obtaining satisfactory recovery (99.00 %-107.00 %) and low standard deviation (RSD < 3.4 %). The colored and high-saline effluents during the traditional dyeing process poses serious environmental challenge. In our study, an eco-friendly cationic cellulose nano-fiber/chitosan (CCNF/CS) binary versatile auxiliary was designed for the neutral salt-free dyeing and physical enhancement of paper by mixing with pulp simply. Profiting from the rich cationic binding sites of CCNF/CS (Charge density: 3749.67 μmol/g), under near neutral conditions (pH = 6.2), the maximum adsorption capacity of anionic GL (Direct fast turquoise blue GL) on paper with 0.5 % CCNF/CS reached 1865.06 mg/g with a desirable evenness (45.5 % and 92.1 % higher than that of CCNF and NaCl group, respectively), and the dye uptake was up to 97 %. The spontaneous adsorption behavior was aligned with the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models, with a primary physical mechanism enhanced by chemical forces. The combination of strong electronic attraction, hydrogen bonding, and n-π stacking effects granted CCNF/CS an enhanced proficiency in anionic dye adsorption. In addition, the tensile strength of the resulting paper yarn with 0.5 % CCNF/CS increased to 52.47 MPa under the optimal parameters, deriving from the CCNF/CS-induced inter-fiber cohesion. Micro- and nano-hybrid cellulose fiber (MNCF) stands out as a versatile cellulosic nanomaterial with promising applications in various fields owing to its excellent intrinsic nature and outstanding characteristics. However, the inefficiency in preparing MNCF, attributed to a complex multi-step processing, hinders its widespread adoption. In this study, a straightforward and highly efficient method for MNCF preparation was developed via a hot water soaking-assisted colloid grinding strategy. Active water molecules in hot water facilitating stronger transverse shrinkage and longitudinal expansion in fiber crystallized region, and thus improving the fibrillation degree of cellulose fibers. As a result, MNCFs with a mean diameter of 37.5 ± 22.2 nm and high concentration (2 wt%) were successfully achieved though pure mechanical method. The micro and nano-hybrid structure leads to the corresponding resulting cellulose paper with micro- and nano-hybrid structure possesses a compact stacking and fewer defects, leading to extraordinary mechanical properties including tensile strength of 204.5 MPa, Young's modulus of 6.3 GPa and elongation of 10.1 %. A microfluidic paper chip colorimetric detection system based on surface molecular imprinting of zinc ferrite nanoparticles was established, and the detection images were obtained by smartphone for gray value analysis and determination of butachlor. The best functional monomers and addition ratio were selected by quantum chemical simulation calculation, the properties of the prepared molecularly imprinted polymers were analyzed, and the detection conditions were optimized. The linear range, sensitivity, and selectivity of the method were evaluated. The results showed that under the optimum conditions, the concentration of 2-80 ng/g had a good linear relationship (R 2 is 0.9953), the detection limit was 1.43 ng/g, the specificity was good, and the whole detection process did not exceed 20 min. This study developed an innovative approach that combines a colourimetric sensor array (CSA) composed of twelve pH-response dyes with advanced algorithms, aiming to detect amine gases and assess the freshness of chilled beef. With the assistance of multivariate statistical analysis, the sensor array can effectively distinguish five amine gases and enable rapid quantification of trimethylamine vapour with a limit of detection (LOD) of 8.02 ppb and visually monitor the fresh levels of chilled beef. Moreover, the utilization of deep learning models (ResNet34, VGG16, and GoogleNet) for chilled beef freshness evaluation achieved an overall accuracy of 98.0 %. Furthermore, t-distributed stochastic neighbour embedding (t-SNE) visualized the feature extraction process and provided explanations to understand the classification process of deep learning. Separators are indispensable components in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), providing efficient pathways for lithium ions to travel and isolating the positive and negative electrodes to avoid short circuits. However, traditional polyolefin-based separators exhibit inferior electrolyte affinities, limited porosities, and low thermal stabilities. In this study, a novel method was developed to prepare chitosan micro/nanofiber membranes as LIB separators using natural materials. The pore sizes of the chitosan micro/nanofibers separators were modulated by changing the diameters of the chitosan fibers. Herein, a versatile surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) platform was firstly constructed by integrating conductive metal organic framework (CMOF) with controlled electrodeposition of Au nanoparticles (Au NPs) on flexible carbon paper (CP-CMOF@Au) for sensitively recognizing diazepam (DZP) in aquatic products. The CMOF not only provided a pre-concentration effect for boosting sensitivity, but also dramatically improved the intrinsic electrical conductivity contributing to homogeneous distribution of Au NPs and forming SERS-active "hot spot" with superior stability and reproducibility. Based on CP-CMOF@Au chip, DZP can be sensitively detected with low limit of detection of 0.64 ng mL -1 and wide linear detection range from 0.001 to 10 μg mL -1 . Also, DZP in aquatic products can be collected and recognized using multiple approaches (drip coating, soaking and wiping) with excellent reusability and satisfactory recovery of 85.8-103.3%. Paper-based packaging generally has poor performances in the gas/oil barriers. This work reports a paper-based packaging material prepared via the modification of conventional papers with TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCN)/cationic guar gum (CGG) hydrogel film. Specifically, the hydrogel film modification was realized through a layer-by-layer deposition on paper. The hydrogel film modification significantly improved the mechanical and barrier properties of the paper. Specifically, the 4-layer hydrogel film modified paper showed a tensile strength of 34.03 MPa and a burst strength of 510 kPa, respectively. In contrast, the unmodified paper exhibited a tensile strength of 26.78 MPa and a bursting strength of 388 kPa. The packaging performance of this TOCN/CGG hydrogel film modified paper was demonstrated via the fresh mooncake packaging test. Such hydrogel film not only provided the oil resistance, but also maintained the mooncake's freshness. To increase milk production, antibiotics are administered to animals to provide weight gain and to prevent or treat diseases. The inappropriate use of these substances can lead to antibiotic resistance and allergic reactions and toxic effects to milk consumers. We describe the development of a simple, fast, portable, and low-cost microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPAD) to quantify sulfonamides in milk using the inhibition of the colorimetric reaction between carbonic anhydrase (CA) and 4-nitrophenyl acetate. The main advantages presented by the μPAD include reproducible batch production, simple application, and precise analysis without previous treatment. The µPAD displayed good linearity (R 2  ≥ 0.986) in a wide range of sulfonamides in milk (2.5 to 40.0 µmol L -1 ), being selective for the drugs even in a highly complex matrix. A low-cost and portable paper-based analytical device has been developed for high throughput and on-site monitoring TC residue in milk through visualized colorimetric reaction. The filtration and concentration effect induced by the porous nature of paper contribute to strengthen the color intensity, leading to quantitative and sensitive detection of tetracycline reaching 1 ppm detection limit, with the linear range of 1-100 ppm both in water and milk samples. The applicability was demonstrated by detection of TC in 18 different types of real milk samples with good recovery ranging from 88% to 113%. Furthermore, the dynamic degradation behavior of tetracycline was monitored through the device. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of colorimetric detection of tetracycline in milk using the paper-based device. An electrochemical deposition method was used to fabricate a gold nanoflower (AuNF) and carbon nanoparticle (CNP) modified carbon paper (CP) sensor (AuNFs-CNPs/CP) for the low-cost detection of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-mTHF) in egg yolk. AuNF morphology and structures were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), revealing nanoflower sizes in the 50 to 200 nm range. AuNFs formed on the sensor were in the Au 0 . We evaluated 5-mTHF assay performance using cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The AuNFs-CNPs/CP sensor detected 5-mTHF concentrations in the ranges from 1 to 5 mg L -1 and 1-20 μg L -1 , with an excellent limit of detection of 1 μg L -1 and good selectivity toward 5-mTHF, when compared to other potentially interfering molecules in samples. The sensing mechanisms of common humidity sensors related to conductive active materials, which can be simply attributed to the variations in resistivity due to the separation of conductive materials and variations in polymer permittivity, are generally plagued by drawbacks such as cumbersome fabrication processes, high cost and low performance. Herein, we prepared Zn/Cellulose filter paper (CFP)/Nanoscale carbon ink (NCI)/Cu structure humidity power generators (ZHGs) based on the power generation principle of typical zinc-air batteries, using active metals with strong conductivity as electrodes, and the redox reactions that took place in the zinc-air battery can convert the chemical energy in the electrode into a stable electrical energy. The ZHG fabricated in this work can reach an extremely high open circuit voltage (V oc ) of 0.803 V at 97 % RH and possesses an excellent power density of 312.24 μW/cm 2 , which has a good linear relationship (R 2  = 0.9669) over a wide humidity range (20-97 % RH). In addition, 10 ZHGs in series can charge commercial capacitors up to 3.83 V. To achieve sensitive detection of trace substances in fluids by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), effective enrichment of molecules at subwavelength regions (hot spots) with a large enhancement is adopted. In this work, a glass fibre paper with Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) is employed for electrodynamic enrichment of analytes in fluids by paper electrophoresis integrated with field amplification sample stacking (FASS) and capillary effects to obtain both Raman and SERS convenient and sensitive detection. With the help of electrophoretic enrichment on the glass fibre paper and surface plasmon enhancement on the AgNPs, this paper electrophoretic enrichment could improve the detection limit of Raman and SERS detection by more than an order of magnitude, even achieving a SERS detection limit of 10 -17  M for Nile Blue A. Biogenic amines containing NH 3 are important indicators for conducting full-scale appraisal of food spoilage and disease diagnosis. However, the currently-used detection methods of NH 3 have several limitations such as time-consuming high cost, and inability to provide visual real-time monitoring. Therefore, researchers have attempted to explore strategies for quantitative real-time monitoring of NH 3 for food spoilage has attracted widespread attentions. Herein, we developed sustainable, fast response, hypersensitized, user-friendly and molecular-level light-emitting biomass-based materials (AFP-FP) containing on-demand nanostructured brain-cells-inspired aggregation-induced-emission (AIE) self-assembles for real-time visual monitoring of seafood spoilage. The 2-hydroxy-5-methyl-isophthalaldehyde-based AIE probe (AFP) was synthesized using a simple "one-step" route. AFP-FP exhibited high selectivity, sensitivity, repeatable and quantitative recognition (y = 7.292×10 3 x + 7.621×10 4 , R = 0.990) of NH 3 with a low detection limit (246 ppb) and fast response (<1 s).
