Francois Truffaut and Jean-Luc Goddard, two of the infamous Cahiers Du Cinema critics who formulated the idea of the 'auteur' film-maker in the 1950s, subsequently denounced the concept as pernicious, ideological nonsense, yet the auteur theory still persists. Great Hollywood film-makers of the 1970s, such as Steven Spielberg, Peter Bogdanovich and Martin Scorsese, portrayed themselves as great auteur directors, inspired artists who put their personal stamp on a film and are the sole source of its meaning. However they became auteurs simply because they collaborated with great talents.

The lack of local diversity within the UK film industry and the industry's failure to expand has for many years been attributed to the fact that film distribution is dominated by the leading five US distributors. In fact, these distributors will distribute any film that they think will be profitable, regardless of its origins. They have developed an approach to distribution which is obviously successful, and should be regarded as having a positive impact on the film-going environment as a whole.

There has been a revival of interest in biographical films in the second half of the 1990s. Indeed, there are more than 30 biographical films under development in 1998, covering politicians, film stars, musicians and historical figures. Biographical films are mainly being produced in order to satisfy the great demand for new film material. Some observers believe that biographical films can never really be successful, as they are neither real biography nor real films.

There has been a significant shift away from films featuring top Hollywood stars in 1997. The most successful films, including 'Mortal Kombat Annihilation' and 'I Know What You Did Last Summer,' have gained acclaim in spite of their lack of the most well known actors and actresses. Film-goers now seem to be rejecting leading stars, having become bored with films that are all very similar. It will soon no longer be possible for stars to make large films which are poor in quality.
