Research presented concerns the components and structure of the fish-killing agents found in Pfiesteria piscicida, a toxic dinoflagellate which has been known to affect humans as well as fish. Experiments attempt to develop a functional assay to screen for toxic activity and guide purification.

The majority of research administrators (RAs) in SRA and NCURA have had little formal training in research design and methodology. RAs with diverse backgrounds are needed to administer the various aspects of external grants and contracts. In this paper, the view is supported that all RAs would function more effectively and enjoy their work more if they had a better understanding of research. Examples are given to demonstrate how some of the basic principles of research design can be readily conveyed to individuals with little or no research training. Consideration of how RAs might benefit from developing a better understanding of research are presented and discussed. Certain recommendations are given to engineering firms that are considering the prospect of international strategy in an attempt to adapt to the fast- changing business environment. Firms are urged to study their markets and partners beforehand, seek government aid, get early legal and tax advice, think long-term and get clear written agreements with agents. The International Federation of Consulting Engineers is likewise suggested, as they produce internationally-used contract documents which ensure fairness for both clients and engineering firms.

A photographic record of people's interactions in Washington, DC, from the late 19th century to 1954 when legalized separation of race ended, gives information about the evolution of race relations and segregation patterns. Washington had separate school and recreation systems, and segregation continued even after World War II. African Americans, who were employed in custodial jobs under their white superiors, created their own cultural institutions. Racism and discrimination began to decline only during 1948 to 1954 with the revival of Reconstruction laws.

The slicing of pizza is mathematically investigated by the application of Riemann hypothesis. A unit square pizza is cut by considering its lower left corner as zero and its upper right corner as (1,1). The pizza is cut along lines which have an integer with a y-intercept and a slope with a positive integer. The various slices and dimension of these slices are determined using Riemann hypothesis.

The Boethian influences in Chaucer's 'Canticus Troili' are examined. Chaucer adapted this piece from Petrarch's 'Canzoniere' which, incidentally, also has similarities to 'Boece'. The syntax, structure, lyrics and subject matter of 'Canticus' bears similarity to 'Boece' and 'Canzoniere'. The subject matter deals with the contradictions of life such as the good suffering and love overpowering, giving contradictory feelings. These Boethian elements are interwoven into the text and reflect Chaucer's admiration for the philosophy.

'Washington: Symbol and City' opened at the National Building Museum on Jun 7, 1991. The exhibition uses models to illustrate Washington around 1900 and the development of Washington during the 20th century. The design and the symbolism of such monuments as the Lincoln Memorial and the White House are described. Research personnel who handle laboratory animals infected with lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) may have a risk of developing lymphocytic choriomeningitis. Lymphocytic choriomeningitis is an inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain that is caused by LCMV. Of 31 laboratory personnel who worked with LCMV-infected mice at a research institute, seven were infected with LCMV, and one had a probable LCMV infection. Infected employees were more likely to clean the cages of infected mice or change their bedding and water than non-infected employees who worked with the mice. At the time of the outbreak of LCMV infections in research personnel, the number of experiments involving LCMV-infected mice increased, and the duration of experiments was increased from three to four weeks to three to four months.

Infrared studies on the (super 12)CO- and (super 13)CO-incubated bifunctional CODH/ACS from M. thermoacetica provides with a direct evidence that CO binds to metal ions in both clusters A and C. The results indicate that the bifunctional enzyme from M. thermoacetica does not contain intrinsic carbonyl ligands in cluster C as it is been proposed in the monofunctional CODH from R. rubrum.
