Social scientists recognize a complex and iterative relationship between the built environment and social identities. Here, we explore the extent to which household and settlement remains may be used as archaeological correlates of collective identities among the sto:lo-Coast Salish peoples of the Fraser River Valley. Using data from six recently tested archaeological sites we begin with the household and explore expressions of identity at various social-spatial scales. The sites span the period from 4200 cal B.C. to the late A.D. 1800s and include settlements with semi-subterranean houses of different forms as well as aboveground plank houses. Across this timeframe we see both change and continuity in settlement location, layout, size, and house form. Our data suggest that although group identities have changed over the millennia, selected social units have persisted through many generations and can be linked to present-day identities of the sto:lo-Coast Salish. Aqui exploramos el alcance del uso de los restos de casa y de asentamientos como correlatos arqueologicos de identidades colectivas entre los Sto:lo-Coast Salish del valle del rio Fraser. Usando los datos de seis sitios arqueologicos recientemente examinados, empezamos con el asimiento de casa y exploramos las expresiones de identidad a varios niveles espaciales y sociales. A case study of a 30-year-old Moroccan man with history of inflammatory bowel disease and fever, abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea is reported. A case study of a 35-year-old pregnant woman who was admitted to hospital at 19 weeks and 6 days of gestation because of the onset of hypertension and diabetes is presented. Subsequent evaluation revealed a 24-hour urinary cortisol level of 825 [mu]g, hypertension, and elevated blood glucose levels and treatment with mitotane and ketoconazole was initiated which declined cortisol level to 126 [mu]g.

The effect of lopinavir/ritonavir (LPV/r) administration on cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzyme activity was quantified using a phenotyping biomarker cocktail study in healthy volunteers. LPV/r therapy results in modest induction of CYP1A2 and CYP2C9 and potent induction of CYP2C19 activity and it is also found that LPV/r inhibited intestinal CYP3A to a greater extent than hepatic CYP3A activity.

A 57-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of a mass, that was 4 cm in diameter, in the dome of the right lobe of the liver, which was identified with the help of computed tomographic (CT) scanning and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the abdominal area. Liver transplantation was considered as the primary treatment because it has the benefits of simultaneous removal of the primary cancer and replacement of the underlying cirrhotic liver, from which subsequent cancers may rise.

An overview is presented on the 3,000-year history of British Columbia's Scowlitz site, located at the confluence of the Fraser and Harrison Rivers. The site began as a cemetery, featuring both burial mounds and cairn complexes. Approximately 1,000 years ago, it also became a locale for season resource processing and then turned into a fishing camp, all the while continuing to be used for human burial.

A rapid assay for the detection of Bacillus stearothermophilus spores was developed based on immunomagnetic capture of the microbial spores from food. The rapid assay involved the utilization of a biotin-streptavidin complex and fluorescence detection. The immunomagnetically captured Bacillus stearothermophilus spores were also labeled with biotinylated-anti-BsS to minimize potential background created by nonspecifically bound organisms. Furthermore, the rapid assay was effectively utilized in the immunocapture of spores from a variety of complex backgrounds such as powdered milk, soil, sand and spices.

A transgenic mouse model of diabetes was used to investigate the regulation and function of heat shock proteins (HSP) in brown adipose tissue (BAT) activity. Observations on HSP expression in control and diabetic animals indicated that BAT response to cold exposure is regulated by the activation of inducible HSP by physiological signals.

Tissue-specific induction of heat shock protein (HSP) in brown adipose tissue (BAT) along with subsequent induction of mitochondrial uncoupling protein synthesis occurs in mice upon exposure to cold ambient temperatures. Norepinephrine activated by the cold exposure may induce HSP expression in BAT by mediating transcription of HSP genes after binding to BAT adrenergic receptors. Body temperature is then raised when BAT metabolic enzymes are activated and synthesized.

Pyrolysis of two differently labeled versions of 3-phenylphthalic anhydride shows that a m-benzyne can form the related o-benzyne through shift of a phenyl group. The highest energy point in the process is the transition structure for a reverse carbon-hydrogen insertion in an intermediate benzopentalene and with the minor addition of an intermediate alkyne formed through a Roger rearrangement, the original mechanism for formation of acenaphthalene accommodates the labeling results.

An earthen ball court dated to about 1400 BC has been discovered at the archaeological site of Paso de la Amada in Mexico, revealing that the design of ball courts date back 3,400 years. Not much is known about the early version of the ball game, but it is thought to have included strong elements of conflict and competition. The site reveals evidence of both high and low status households, contemporary with the ball court.
