Musical play is a vital aspect of children's musical cultures. As the social and cultural experiences of children change over time, their playful engagements with music may reflect these shifts. The purpose of this oral historical research was to explore girlhood musical play experiences over the course of a span of approximately 80 years (ca. 1920-2009), as well as the influences at work in the transmission, continuity, and content of these musical play behaviors. Semi-structured interviews were implemented to illuminate the musical play experience stories of 20 female individuals spanning four generations of birth as well as the factors impacting the transmission and continuity of musical play over time through family lines and across age cohorts. Findings suggest that influences of family, temporal context and peer groups, popular culture, cultural contexts, and issues of gender identity and gender roles were all present in the transmission of musical play repertoires over time. A lack of interest in musical play was also reported, which additionally impacted transmission.

Bibliotherapy is a technique that invites children to see themselves in the characters of carefully selected children's literature with the intention of making connections, building empathy, developing social skills, processing difficult situations, and more. The purpose of this article is to explore the intersections of bibliotherapy, social and emotional learning (SEL), and approaches in elementary music. Many music educators already implement children's literature in the classroom--bibliotherapy provides a deeper dimension to these existing literature-related activities. Strategies for implementation of bibliotherapy in music settings are offered including specific books addressing each of the five components of the SEL framework: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision-Making.

University employability awards, in the UK particularly, aim to assist students to develop career related skills and attributes and thus increase their potential to achieve graduate level employment. Self-report quantitative and qualitative data were collected at intervals via questionnaires, interviews and focus groups from two cohorts (N = 212) of a well-established career development and employability award at a large civic UK university. Findings indicated increases in confidence and aspiration, and in the ability to articulate and apply skills and abilities; also that the award may convey similar benefits to work experience. Survey data from award completers indicated that they had changed their career related behaviour, and students who have completed the award show a consistent small increase in their level of graduate employment when compared to the graduate employment figure for the university as a whole in the UK university destinations data. Employability related values, attitudes and behaviour may all change as a result of award experience. Reported changes implied a sense of improved resourcefulness. It is hypothesised that the award may enhance student employability somewhat via development of psychosocial resources, producing a shift in the student's perception of self and identity.

This article highlights the utilization of Missouri Community Action Network's Poverty Simulation within an Interprofessional Education program to teach students about the complexities of poverty and enhance the development of professional identity.

In an age where caring for others may seem like a relic of a bygone era, we all must be reminded of the importance of active caring in the classroom and beyond. This article explores the work of Nel Noddings, an educational scholar at the forefront of caring research, and her four dimensions for bringing active caring into the classroom. Modeling, dialogue, practice, and confirmation provide teachers with concrete starting points for reflecting on the ways in which they cultivate caring in their music classrooms and how they develop caring relationships with students that reflect the ways they need and want to be cared for. Music educators often work with the same students over the course of many years--it is to our advantage to use this time to teach caring and teach with care.

This study investigated whether higher maternal psychological distress, lower provision of psychosocial stimulation and a negative appraisal of parenting experience were associated with lower cognitive, motor, social-emotional and adaptive behaviour development in children under 3 years of age in Kenya. A cross-sectional design was used, with 81 caregiver-child dyads recruited through convenience sampling. The mean age of these infants was 8.5 months (SD = 5.6 months, range 23 days to 25.5 months). Higher maternal psychological distress was associated with lower social-emotional development, but not cognitive, motor and adaptive development of a child. Psychosocial stimulation provided by mothers was not related to any developmental outcomes. Maternal psychological distress and appraisal of parenting experience were significant, unique predictors of child social-emotional development. Findings suggest that interventions designed to promote social-emotional development of young children in Kenya should target maternal mental health and enhance confidence and experience of parenting.

Teachers of general music are tasked with the challenge of locating high-quality repertoire for classroom use and to incorporate that repertoire into meaningful music learning encounters for children and youth. This task may become all the more difficult when seeking out repertoire of substance from traditional sources, finding songs of folk origin that truly reflect their original context, and celebrating the people who kept these musical traditions alive. This article highlights the lives and works of John Langstaff and Ruth Crawford Seeger, two American musicians, folklorists, and preservationists who tirelessly transcribed, compiled, and shared the substantive music of America’s folk traditions. Their legacies of collections of American folk music for use with children live on into present day, representing a great wealth of high quality, age-appropriate, and contextually appropriate folk literature that deserves to be kept alive in classrooms today and beyond. American composer Ruth Crawford Seeger grew into the role of music educator as a consummate musician with a deep interest in connecting children to their American musical heritage. This article examines the contributions of Ruth Crawford Seeger to American music education, principally through examination of primary and secondary sources and review of her published works. While historical in some of its methodological procedures, it is even more so a biographical study of a composer who was consumed with a passion to preserve and transmit American heritage music to children. Her life in music as pianist, music intellectual, and composer notwithstanding, this research draws attention to her work in the selection, transcription, and placement of songs from the vast collections of the Lomax family into published works for use with children in schools. The authors examine the legacy of Ruth Crawford Seeger as an educator, with particular emphasis on the manner in which music of the people was masterfully transcribed from recordings and prepared for children and their teachers in schools and preschools. On the basis of theory and previous research, it was hypothesized that predisaster child trait anxiety would predict disaster-related posttraumatic stress symptoms and generalized anxiety disorder symptoms, even after controlling for the number of hurricane exposure events. Results support this hypothesis and further indicate that predisaster negative affect predicted disaster-related posttraumatic stress symptoms and generalized anxiety disorder symptoms. Also, Katrina-related posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms were predicted by the number of hurricane exposure events and sex (being female). Predisaster generalized anxiety disorder symptoms predicted postdisaster generalized anxiety disorder symptoms, and predisaster trait anxiety predicted postdisaster depressive symptoms. Findings are discussed in terms of their relevance for developing interventions to mitigate the impact of disasters in youths.

This study examined the interrelations among negative cognitive errors, anxiety sensitivity, and anxiety control beliefs and explored their unique and specific associations with anxiety symptoms in a community sample of youth. Existing research has suggested that these constructs are related to childhood anxiety disorder symptoms; however, additional research is needed to test the interrelations among negative cognitive errors, anxiety sensitivity, and anxiety control beliefs and to determine if they show unique and specific associations with anxiety symptoms. The results of this study indicated that negative cognitive errors, anxiety sensitivity, and anxiety control beliefs were associated with each other and that they demonstrated unique concurrent associations with childhood anxiety disorder symptoms. Moreover, certain cognitive biases showed specificity in their association with anxiety symptoms versus depressive symptoms. (Contains 3 tables and 5 endnotes.)

The purpose of this study was to examine the linkages among selective attention, memory bias, cognitive errors, and anxiety problems by testing a model of the interrelations among these cognitive variables and childhood anxiety disorder symptoms. A community sample of 81 youth (38 females and 43 males) aged 9-17 years and their parents completed measures of the child's anxiety disorder symptoms. Youth completed assessments measuring selective attention, memory bias, and cognitive errors. Results indicated that selective attention, memory bias, and cognitive errors were each correlated with childhood anxiety problems and provide support for a cognitive model of anxiety which posits that these three biases are associated with childhood anxiety problems. Only limited support for significant interrelations among selective attention, memory bias, and cognitive errors was found. Finally, results point towards an effective strategy for moving the assessment of selective attention to younger and community samples of youth.

This report details the assessment and intervention carried out with a couple, "Paula" and "Bob", who both had a moderate learning disability. Paula was referred to the Psychology Service for some work focussing on difficulties in controlling her responses to anger. This report discusses the assessment and offers a formulation from a cognitive behavioural perspective, also drawing on ideas from psychodynamic and systemic theories. It was necessary to work within the system that supported Paula, which included some joint work with Paula and Bob and work with their carers. The assessment and intervention were not straightforward and flexibility was required throughout in order to gain an understanding of the situation and offer an appropriately focussed intervention. The outcome and reflections on the work are discussed.
