1. Physical Impairments as Risk Factors for the Development of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.

Abstract

Examines the relative risk of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among individuals with six types of traumatic physical impairments. Odds ratios and associated confidence intervals were calculated for each impairment in a group of veterans receiving medical services. Four of the six impairments were found to be risk factors for PTSD. Implications for rehabilitation counseling are discussed. (Contains 22 references.) (GCP)

2. Postservice Psychosocial Adjustment of Former Spinal Cord Injured Rehabilitation Clients. Research Report.

Abstract

A study examined the long-term adjustment of spinal cord-injured vocational rehabilitation clients by isolating major dimensions of postservice adjustment, correlating preservice status with adjustment followup, and by measuring client pre- to postservice psychological change. Three self-report instruments (a needs satisfaction inventory, a goal scaling measure, and a measure of perceived life status) were completed at service entry by 122 clients of various Arkansas intermediate medical centers or comprehensive rehabilitation centers. Included among the major study findings were the following: (1) postservice adjustment to spinal cord injury is clearly multidimensional and spans at least four major dimensions--satisfaction in meeting basic needs, participation in vocational activities, participation in avocational activities, and accomplishment of highly personal goals; (2) there were no relationships of preservice psychological status to adjustment followup; (3) clients' psychological status remained stable from service entry to followup; and (4) at followup a significant number of spinal cord-injured clients positively revised their life status perceptions toward personally important goals. 3. Rehabilitation Counselor Education and Case Performance: An Independent Replication.

Abstract

Replicated Szymanski and associates' findings concerning counselor education, experience, and competitive closure rates for clients with severe disabilities. Findings from 50 rehabilitation counselors revealed that, for approximately the first 12 years of their careers, rehabilitation counselors with master's degrees tended to have higher rates of competitive closure for clients with severe disabilities than did counselors with bachelor's degrees. 4. A Multiyear Citation Analysis of Three Rehabilitation Journals

Using citation analysis, 3 rehabilitation journals were compared on average number of articles published per year, average number of references per article, number of self-citations, and number of times published articles were cited by other journals for the 4-year periods of 1999 through 2002 and 1977 through 1980. These data were then related to establishing journal quality.

8. Paramodeling Effects in Counselor Training

Samples of counselor trainees viewed either a series of expert modeling or coping modeling videotapes. It was hypothesized that counselor trainees who viewed expert models would illustrate concommitant or paramodeling phenomena by exhibiting decreases in anxiety toward participation in a counseling interview. 9. Reducing Counselor Anxiety by Using Modeling Strategies

Two kinds of videotaped modeling--an expert and a coping model approach--were compared as to the relative effectiveness of each method in reducing beginning counselors' anxiety toward a counseling interview. 10. Perceptions of the Disabled and Counseling Effectiveness

Counselors' (N=80) attitudes toward disability differed according to their personal attributes. The 40 counselors judged as the more effective counselors, either male or female, rated the disabled similarly to normals. In contrast, perceptions of normals and disabled by the 40 less effective counselors differed significantly according to their sex. (Author)

11. Counselor Anxiety and Tolerance of Ambiguity: Critical Variables in Rehabilitation Counseling.

Abstract

Research on rehabilitation counseling has generally focused on the roles and functions of the counselor, client attributes as moderator variables affecting counseling outcome and selected counselor traits thought necessary for the development of effective counseling techniques. After an analysis of the literature, two variables, counselor anxiety and counselor tolerance of ambiguity, are hypothesized to augment rehabilitation counselor selection procedures, help explain why certain counselors engage in selected roles and functions, and to account for some of the variance in case difficulty studies. A theoretical rationale for the importance of the variables in rehabilitation counseling is given and research establishing the inter-relationships of the variables presented. In addition, a paradigm using counselor/client anxiety and tolerance of ambiguity interactions is offered, and reasons for incorporating the variables in counselor research and supervision are discussed. Abstract

This training text is designed to introduce program evaluation concepts and terminology to beginning program evaluators for state-federal vocational rehabilitation programs. Taking a research approach, the text covers the principles underlying program evaluation, and is geared to give the reader a basic understanding of how these principles can be applied to the evaluation of human service programs. Designed as a self instructional guide, the text requires little mathematical sophistication on the part of the learner. It is divided into four units, each subdivided into modules which include review exercises. Unit 1 covers general approaches to, and the various issues concerning, program evaluation. Unite 2 deals with sampling concepts; unit 3 with measurement, reliability, validity, and basic psychometric standards; and unit 4 introduces evaluation designs and data analysis.
