Abstract Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes spread major vector-borne viral diseases in tropical and sub-tropical regions of the globe. In this study, we sequenced the genome of Indian Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus and mapped to their reference genomes. Comparative genomics were performed between our strain and the reference strains. A total of 14,416,484 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and 156,487 insertions and deletions (InDels) were found in Ae. aegypti, and 28,940,433 SNPs and 188,987 InDels in Ae. albopictus. Particular emphasis was given to gene families involved in mosquito digestion, development, and innate immunity, which could be putative candidates for vector control. Serine protease cascades and their inhibitors called serpins, play a central role in these processes. We extracted high-impact variants in genes associated with serine proteases and serpins. This study reports for the first time a high coverage genome sequence data of an Indian Ae. albopictus mosquito. The results from this study will provide insights into Indian Aedes specific polymorphisms and the evolution of immune related genes in mosquitoes, which can serve as a resource for future comparative genomics and those pursuing the development of targeted biopesticides for effective mosquito control strategies.

A field trial was conducted to investigate the ‘Phytotoxicity of pendimethalin on the emergence of seedlings in direct seeded rice (DSR) across different concentrations’ during the Kharif season of 2022 at the experimental farm of the School of Agriculture, Lovely Professional University, Phagwara, Punjab. The experiment was conducted using a randomized block design with five treatments using different doses of pendimethalin (1600, 1800, 2000, and 2200 gram active ingredient per hectare (g ai per ha), and control (untreated)). Application of pendimethalin at 1600 g ai per ha resulted in a significantly higher number of seedlings than other treatment groups. The lowest number of seedlings was observed in the 2200 g ai per ha treatment group. The number of microbes present was optimal during the treatment with 1600 g ai per ha pendimethalin. With an increase in the dosage of pendimethalin, a decrease in the count of soil microbes was observed, with the lowest microbial count observed with the highest dose of pendimethalin, i.e., 2200 g ai per ha. No phytotoxic effect was observed in the DSR treated with pendimethalin at 1600 g ai per ha. Therefore the present study has to be obtain the appropriate use of dosage to inhibit the toxicity of herbicide as well as maintain the soil fertility and microbial growth.

Background: Craniopharyngiomas are rare benign tumors located in the sellar and suprasellar region, with an incidence of 0.5–2 cases per million as reported in Western studies. Post-treatment, including surgery and/or radiotherapy, many patients develop significant obesity, primarily due to hypothalamic damage and associated complications such as hypopituitarism. In the South Asian population, genetic predisposition to obesity at lower BMIs, coupled with a carbohydrate-rich diet, may exacerbate obesity in craniopharyngioma patients, presenting a unique challenge. Methods: This submission is a commentary based on a comprehensive literature review. The authors conducted the review using PubMed to focus on English-language articles covering hypothalamic obesity, craniopharyngioma and obesity in the South Asian population from 1939 to the present. Results: The literature review revealed that 50–60 % of patients treated for craniopharyngioma develop obesity, predominantly linked to hypothalamic damage, although these data are mainly derived from Western studies. Hypopituitarism was frequently observed, further contributing to the obesity. Despite a caloric intake appropriate for the age and gender, these patients exhibited reduced physical activity as measured by wrist accelerometers. Patients with hypothalamic obesity due to craniopharyngioma are at risk for metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular morbidity. Additionally, visual impairment was common, leading to a decreased quality of life. The South Asian population, genetically predisposed to visceral obesity and a carbohydrate-rich diet, may display a distinct phenotype. Although multiple treatment modalities have been tried, there is no definite treatment modality available to counteract this condition at present. Conclusion: South Asian phenotype of craniopharyngioma-related obesity is characterized by significant metabolic and hormonal dysregulation, influenced by both dietary and genetic factors. Nevertheless, there may be a lot to be still understood about this devastating, rapid, relentless hypothalamic obesity syndrome. Also, a higher morbidity rate within this population, underscores the need for further research to develop targeted interventions.

ABSTRACTIn this study, we investigate novel fractional tuberculosis model with Caputo fractional derivative. The computational solution of the fractional tuberculosis disease is obtained with the help of the generalized Euler's method (GEM). This article considers two treatment strategies: protective treatment for latent populations and main treatment for infected ones. The compartmental structure of the six-dimensional model includes the susceptible, latent, infected, recovered, and treatment classes. To examine the nature of differential equations of fractional order that arise in biological illness, the findings produced utilizing the method under consideration are more accurate and straightforward. Additionally, the stability of the equilibrium point is also investigated. The fractional model has been graphically simulated using MATLAB22.

Substantial advancements have been made in applying fractional calculus to understanding the epidemiology of viral diseases. However, it remains troubling that over 2,000,000 children, particularly those under the age of 5 and elderly individuals over 65, succumb to pneumonia annually in developing nations. This paper uses a deterministic SVEIR (susceptible, vaccinated, exposed, infected, and recovered) model to investigate pneumonia disease dynamics from a mathematical perspective. The governing model has been generalized from Caputo fractional derivatives, and the generalized Euler’s method has been used to calculate the approximate solution of the governing model. The dynamical systems theory examines the model’s stability analysis, basic reproduction number, and equilibrium points. The linearization method for spatial equilibrium and the Lyapunov functional method demonstrate that the model is locally asymptotic stable for disease-free equilibrium. Graphical results are showcased through MATLAB21 to illustrate the resolution of the problem. The research findings suggest that the disease will eventually disappear from the population if vaccination coverage rises over the necessary vaccination threshold. According to sensitivity analysis, the most sensitive factors are the transmission rate and the pace at which exposed individuals become contagious. According to the study, we must strengthen treatment effectiveness to prevent disease spreading.

This study focuses on developing a mathematical model incorporating the incomplete I-function (IIF) and estimating glucose supply in the human bloodstream. The results of our investigations are far-reaching, revealing many exciting scenarios across the various parameters under investigation. These results are not only practical but can also play an essential role in the contexts of medical and biological fields.

Abstract This study focuses on improving the accuracy of assessing liver damage and early detection for improved treatment strategies. In this study, we examine the human liver using a modified Atangana-Baleanu fractional derivative based on the mathematical model to understand and predict the behavior of the human liver. The iteration method and fixed-point theory are used to investigate the presence of a unique solution in the new model. Furthermore, the homotopy analysis transform method, whose convergence is also examined, implements the mathematical model. Finally, numerical testing is performed to demonstrate the findings better. According to real clinical data comparison, the new fractional model outperforms the classical integer-order model with coherent temporal derivatives.

Sediment deposition is a natural process that occurs in all reservoirs, resulting in significant storage loss, which has an adverse effect on the economic development of the local area. It is necessary to take appropriate action to control the sedimentation and prevent loss of the storage capacity of the reservoir. In the present study, runoff and sediment data collected at the Konijerla hydrometric station of Wyra reservoir for the period of 1991 to 2019 are used. Data from 2011 to 2016 is used to calibrate and the data from 2017 to 2019 is used to validate the SWAT model. The Wyra watershed consists of 26 sub-basins and 47 HRUs (Hydrological Response Units). Out of these sub-basins, one of the sub-basins is contributing 18.8% of sedimentation. It was also observed that two other sub-basins, though less in area, generate high sediments. Seasonal sediment analysis showed that sedimentation increased by 12% in the month of August for wet years. Overall sedimentation increased in wet years by 10.60% and in dry years, it decreased by 18.78%. The SWAT model was satisfactory in the calibration and validation periods for various parameters used. Hence, this model can be used for sedimentation study, as well as a planning tool in the reservoir capacity management.

Abstract Two major challenges hinder the advance of aqueous zinc metal batteries for sustainable stationary storage: (1) achieving predominant Zn-ion (de)intercalation at the oxide cathode by suppressing adventitious proton co-intercalation and dissolution, and (2) simultaneously overcoming Zn dendrite growth at the anode that triggers parasitic electrolyte reactions. Here, we reveal the competition between Zn2+ vs proton intercalation chemistry of a typical oxide cathode using ex-situ/operando techniques, and alleviate side reactions by developing a cost-effective and non-flammable hybrid eutectic electrolyte. A fully hydrated Zn2+ solvation structure facilitates fast charge transfer at the solid/electrolyte interface, enabling dendrite-free Zn plating/stripping with a remarkably high average coulombic efficiency of 99.8% at commercially relevant areal capacities of 4 mAh cm−2 and function up to 1600 h at 8 mAh cm−2. By concurrently stabilizing Zn redox at both electrodes, we achieve a new benchmark in Zn-ion battery performance of 4 mAh cm−2 anode-free cells that retain 85% capacity over 100 cycles at 25 °C. Using this eutectic-design electrolyte, Zn | |Iodine full cells are further realized with 86% capacity retention over 2500 cycles. The approach represents a new avenue for long-duration energy storage.

The present article introduces and studies the Fredholm-type integral equation with an incomplete I-function (IIF) and an incomplete $ \bar {I} $ -function (I $ \bar {I} $ F) in its kernel. First, using fractional calculus and the Mellin transform principle, we solve an integral problem involving IIF. The idea of the Mellin transform and fractional calculus is then used to analyse an integral equation using the incomplete $ \bar {I} $ -function. This is followed by the discovery and investigation of several important exceptional cases. This article's general discoveries may yield new integral equations and solutions. The desired outcomes seem to be very helpful in resolving many real-world problems whose solutions represent different physical phenomena. And also, findings help solve introdifferential, fractional differential, and extended integral equation problems.

Calcium is an essential element in our body and plays a vital role in moderating calcium signalling. Calcium is also called the second messenger. Calcium signalling depends on cytosolic calcium concentration. In this study, we focus on cellular calcium fluctuations with different buffers, including calcium-binding buffers, using the Hilfer fractional advection-diffusion equation for cellular calcium. Limits and start conditions are also set. By combining with intracellular free calcium ions, buffers reduce the cytosolic calcium concentration. The buffer depletes cellular calcium and protects against toxicity. Association, dissociation, diffusion, and buffer concentration are modelled. The solution of the Hilfer fractional calcium model is achieved through utilizing the integral transform technique. To investigate the influence of the buffer on the calcium concentration distribution, simulations are done in MATLAB 21. The results show that the modified calcium model is a function of time, position, and the Hilfer fractional derivative. Thus the modified Hilfer calcium model provides a richer physical explanation than the classical calcium model.

The study discussed in this article is driven by the realization that many physical processes may be understood by using applications of fractional operators and special functions. In this study, we present and examine a fractional integral operator with an I-function in its kernel. This operator is used to solve several fractional differential equations (FDEs). FDE has a set of particular cases whose solutions represent different physical phenomena. Many mathematical physics, biology, engineering, and chemistry problems are identified and solved using FDE. Specifically, a few exciting relations involving the new fractional operator with incomplete I-function (IIF) in its kernel and classical Riemann Liouville fractional integral and derivative operators, the Hilfer fractional derivative operator, and the generalized composite fractional derivate (GCFD) operator are established. The discovery and investigation of several important exceptional cases follow this.

In order to understand and manage infectious illnesses, mathematical models are extremely important. They support decision making by researchers and public health workers in predicting the spread of diseases, evaluate the results of interventions, and gathering data. This study considers a fractionalized hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection model with cell cure. The Atangana Baleanu fractional model was initially established for the epidemic issue. This paper analyses the fractional form that makes up the HBV infection model utilizing the numerical methodology, homotopy analysis transform method (HATM). The suggested technique is created with the use of the homotopy analysis method (HAM), the homotopy polynomial, and the Laplace transformation. Additionally, the existence and uniqueness of the solution are considered, and stability analysis is given by the fixed-point theory (FPT) of the HBV model. Through MATLAB21, the obtained solutions are graphically simulated. The graphical solutions demonstrated that the peak of viral propagation is reduced when a fractional-order derivative is included to the model, and cell damage is minimized by starting treatment early on; however, the disease takes longer to be completely eradicated. The outcomes will be beneficial in the medical field. The fractional model lets us draw significant information essential for predicting disease outcomes and planning appropriate clinical management for patients.

Traffic congestion is the major problem due to rapid urbanization and exponential growth of private vehicles, a decrease in the use of active transport, which results in problems of transport sustainability and public health issues. Generally, commuters often find it challenging to travel along the congested routes in urban areas due to increased travel time or air pollution. The traffic congestion of those congested routes may be minimized using strategies like congestion pricing, but public acceptability is one of the main hurdles in establishing a congestion pricing scheme. The present study attempted to understand the public acceptability of the congestion pricing system in India. To fulfil the objective of the study, a questionnaire survey was conducted to ascertain the public's perception of the congestion pricing system. In order to achieve this objective, a multinomial logistic regression (MNL) model was developed by considering public opinion on support to implement congestion pricing as a dependent variable, and other variables were considered as independent variables. From the model results, it is understood that the travel frequency (viz., 1-2 and 3-4 times) and number of times struck in congestion of commuters are most likely to remain neutral. The revenue generated by congestion pricing is allocated to road infrastructure, car tax reductions, public transportation, and parking areas, which are more likely to remain in neutral and under review after implementation. The study results are more useful to policy makers in urban areas while they relook at congestion pricing strategies in developing countries.

Ethiopia is one of the countries highly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in Africa. A new study has looked at the transmission dynamics of the outbreak in Ethiopia based on the age categories of the infected individuals. Infected individuals are divided into three age categories (less than 14 years (I $ _{1} $ ), 15–54 years (I $ _{2} $ ), and above 54 years I $ _{3} $ ). Chebyshev polynomial of the fourth kind is used to convert a fractional system into an algebraic system of equations, which is then solved using iterative methods. The fundamental reproduction number $ (\mathcal R _{0}) $ is calculated using the next-generation matrix technique, and the disease-free and endemic equilibrium points, as well as their stability, are carefully studied. We calculated the parameters and starting conditions provided for our model using data from the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) and the Ethiopian Ministry of Health from 29 February 2021, to 7 June 2021.

Background: Soft tissue tumors (STTs) are heterogeneous group of tumor and Immunohistochemistry (IHC) has assumed an increasingly important role in their diagnosis. Objectives: To estimate the relative frequency of various STTs with age, gender and site wise distribution, study their histomorphological spectrum, grade the soft tissue sarcomas and evaluate the role of IHC. Materials and Methods: This observational study was conducted in tertiary care hospital and cases diagnosed as STTs from January 2018 to December 2020 were included in the study. Clinical findings were obtained from patients’ case files. Histological findings were evaluated and grading was done in soft tissue sarcomas. IHC was performed wherever required. Descriptive and comparative statistical analysis was performed. Results: STTs were encountered more in female than male. Benign STTs were more common than malignant. Incidence of malignancy increased with age, malignant tumors being most common in fifth decade. Adipocytic tumors (n=162, 63.8 %) formed major bulk of benign tumors. Most common malignant STTs were smooth muscle tumors (n=6, 23.1 %). IHC was very important in diagnosis of STTs because of frequent difficulty of diagnosis on morphological basis alone. Conclusions: Adipocytic tumors were most common benign STTs and most common malignant STTs were smooth muscle tumors.

We report a new ion conductor—Na11Sn2SbSe12—as a possible candidate for a solid catholyte in composite cathodes for all-solid state Na-batteries, which exhibits a room temperature ionic conductivity of 0.15 ± 0.03 mS cm−1 and an activation energy of 0.39 ± 0.02 eV. The sulfide solid solutions of Na11Sn2SbSe12, namely, Na11Sn2SbS12−xSex (x = 1 and 6), were also investigated through a combination of Rietveld refinement against powder x-ray diffraction data and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to reveal the complex structure–property relationships governing ion transport in this class of materials. Meanwhile, broadening of the Na-ion diffusion pathways in Na11Sn2SbSe12 is expected to facilitate Na-ion transport compared to the sulfide-rich member of the solid solution, the opposite holds: increasing the Se fraction in Na11Sn2SbS12−xSex leads to a little change in the activation energy but a reduction in the ionic conductivity. We ascribe this to the lowering of the prefactor, σ0, in the Arrhenius relationship with increasing lattice “softening” as a function of higher Se content.

Research Question: Does the dose of gonadotropin used for superovulation in IVF affect the proportion of euploid blastocysts obtained after fertilization? Study Design: Multicentre randomized controlled trial recruiting 57 women who were treated with ovarian stimulation using either 150 or 300 IU Menopur per day. Both groups received GnRH antagonist from day 5 of ovarian stimulation and final oocyte maturation was induced using a leuprolide GnRH (gonadotropin releasing hormone) agonist trigger when three or more follicles reached 17 mm diameter. Oocyte collection was scheduled 36–38 hours post trigger. In vitro fertilization (IVF) or Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) were performed according to individual unit protocol and embryos were cultured to blastocyst stage. A trophectoderm biopsy was performed on day 5 of embryo culture and used for preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy. Euploid embryos were transferred in subsequent frozen embryo transfer cycles with appropriate endometrial preparation. Results: The number of oocytes obtained from women randomized to 150 IU Menopur was between 3 and 17 (mean = 9), whereas the number of oocytes obtained from women randomized to 300 IU Menopur was between 3 and 24 (mean = 11). There was a positive linear relationship between serum AMH concentration and oocyte yield in both the 150 and 300 IU Menopur groups (R = 0.3359, R2 = 0.1129 and R = 0.3741, R2 = 0.1399). The percentage of euploid to aneuploid embryos in the 150 IU Menopur group was 63% and in the 300 IU Menopur group, the proportion was 75%, which was not significantly different (p = 0.17). Conclusion: The higher dose ovarian stimulation protocol did not significantly increase the number of oocytes retrieved, nor did the higher dose protocol reduce the proportion of euploid embryos created. This study does not support the hypothesis that use of higher doses of gonadotropin for ovarian stimulation results in a reduction in the proportion of euploid embryos obtained after IVF.

Abstract Background Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has become a global pandemic and is posing a serious public health problem for almost all countries. Spontaneous pneumomediastinum, a rare condition, is usually seen in patients with underlying pulmonary pathology, infections, or mechanical ventilation. Spontaneous pneumomediastinum is a rare complication in COVID-19 pneumonia. Case presentation We report a case of spontaneous pneumomediastinum, pneumopericardium, and subcutaneous emphysema in a 62-year-old diabetic patient with COVID-19 infection who presented with cough, fever, and breathlessness, which turned to be a fatal complication. Conclusion Pneumomediastinum/subcutaneous emphysema, a not so common complication associated with COVID-19 infection, should be considered as a bad prognostic indicator of worsening disease and hence requires early recognition and careful monitoring of the patient for any possible unfavorable outcome.

Introduction: Second generation Supraglottic Airway Devices (SADs) contain a gastric drain tube which separates the respiratory and the alimentary tract. This provides a better oropharyngeal seal and reduces the risk of pulmonary aspiration of refluxed gastric contents compared to the first generation SADs. Aim: To compare Ambu® AuraGain™ (AAU) laryngeal mask airway with LMA® ProSeal™ (PLMA) in terms of Oropharyngeal Leak Pressure (OLP) in laparoscopic surgeries. Materials and Methods: This randomised clinical study was conducted from December 2017-September 2019, at Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara College of Medical Sciences and Hospital, Dharwad, India in 80 patients, aged 18-65 years, of American Society of Anaesthesiologists (ASA) physical status I and II undergoing laparoscopic surgeries. Patients were randomly assigned to one of the two groups: group PLMA and group AAU. After induction of anaesthesia, SADs were inserted by an experienced anaesthesiologist. OLP, pharyngeal mucosal pressure, peak airway pressure and secondary outcome parameters (the number of attempts, time required, ease, and haemodynamic response associated with insertion of LMA) were recorded at set time points. Data was analysed using Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22. Results: All patients in both the groups were comparable in terms of demographic data and baseline vital parameters. The Oropharyngeal Leak Pressure of group AAU was comparable to group PLMA at all measured time-points. The two groups were comparable in terms of pharyngeal mucosal pressure immediately after insertion of LMA, but group AAU had lesser pharyngeal mucosal pressure compared to group PLMA immediately after pneumoperitoneum, at 30 and 60 minutes. Mean peak airway pressures were lower in group AAU than group PLMA immediately after insertion of LMA (15.53±1.50 versus 17.06±2.56 cmH2O, p=0.004) and immediately after creation of pneumoperitoneum (23.03±2.96 versus 26.58±10.12 cmH2O, p=0.04). Both the groups were comparable in terms of number of attempts, time taken, haemodynamic response associated with LMA insertion and with passage of gastric tube except that PLMA was easier to insert in the first attempt compared to AAU (26/40 versus 13/40, Grade 1 ease of insertion). Conclusion: Ambu® AuraGain™ could be a useful alternative to LMA® ProSeal™ in patients undergoing laparoscopic surgeries.

Background: Skeletal fluorosis is a metabolic bone disease that results from the chronic ingestion of fluoride. Although there are national programs in place to raise awareness and curtail this disease condition, skeletal fluorosis continues to cause crippling deformities in areas where it continues to be endemic. Method: ology: An observational study was undertaken at a university-affiliated teaching hospital in southern India. Clinical, biochemical features and densitometric variables including bone mineral density (BMD) and trabecular bone score (TBS) were assessed. Results: All patients (n = 9) hailed from fluorosis-endemic Indian states and the source of drinking water was from a bore-well in all cases. The mean (±SD) age and BMI were 45.6(±11.0) years and 25.6 (±8.4) kg/m2 respectively. Dental mottling was present in five subjects. Five subjects each had vitamin D deficiency with osteomalacia. The mean (±SD) urine fluoride was 2.9(±1.4) ppm. The bone mineral density showed a sclerotic pattern, with the mean (±SD) TBS being 1.607 (±0.160). All patients were initiated on calcium and cholecalciferol supplements and those with osteomalacia were treated with calcitriol. Conclusion: While fluorosis continues to be a challenge in endemic regions, the presence of osteomalacia proves to be a treatable component of the disease condition. There seems to be an unmet need for more aggressive defluoridation techniques and the provision of safe drinking water in susceptible individuals.

Abstract Background COVID-19 has caused a global pandemic of unprecedented proportions. Elective cardiac surgery has been universally postponed with only urgent and emergency cardiac operations being performed. The National Health Service in the United Kingdom introduced national measures to conserve intensive care beds and significantly limit elective activity shortly after lockdown. Case presentation We report two cases of early post-operative mortality secondary to COVID-19 infection immediately prior to the implementation of these widespread measures. Conclusion The role of cardiac surgery in the presence of COVID-19 is still very unpredictable and further studies on both short term and long term outcomes are warranted.

Abstract Background Despite declining incidence over the past decade, malaria remains an important health burden in India. This study aimed to assess the village-level temporal patterns of Plasmodium infection in two districts of the north-eastern state of Meghalaya and evaluate risk factors that might explain these patterns. Methods Primary Health Centre passive malaria case data from 2014 to 2018 were analysed to characterize village-specific annual incidence and temporal trends. Active malaria case detection was undertaken in 2018 and 2019 to detect Plasmodium infections using PCR. A questionnaire collected socio-demographic, environmental, and behavioural data, and households were spatially mapped via GPS. Adult mosquitoes were sampled at a subset of subjects' houses, and Anopheles were identified by PCR and sequencing. Risk factors for Plasmodium infection were evaluated using bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis, and spatial cluster analysis was undertaken. Results The annual malaria incidence from PHC-based passive surveillance datasets in 2014–2018 was heterogenous but declining across villages in both districts. Active surveillance in 2018 enrolled 1468 individuals from 468 households (West Jaintia Hills) and 1274 individuals from 359 households (West Khasi Hills). Plasmodium falciparum prevalence per 100 people varied from 0 to 4.1% in the nine villages of West Jaintia Hills, and from 0 to 10.6% in the 12 villages of West Khasi Hills. During the times of the ongoing COVID pandemic, aerosol-generating procedures such as bronchoscopy have the potential of transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 to the healthcare workers. The decision to perform bronchoscopy during the COVID pandemic should be taken judiciously. Over the years, the indications for bronchoscopy in the clinical practice have expanded. Experts at the Indian Association for Bronchology perceived the need to develop a concise statement that would assist a bronchoscopist in performing bronchoscopy during the COVID pandemic safely. The current Indian Association for Bronchology Consensus Statement provides specific guidelines including triaging, indications, bronchoscopy area, use of personal protective equipment, patient preparation, sedation and anesthesia, patient monitoring, bronchoscopy technique, sample collection and handling, bronchoscope disinfection, and environmental disinfection concerning the coronavirus disease-2019 situation. The suggestions provided herewith should be adopted in addition to the national bronchoscopy guidelines that were published recently. This statement summarizes the essential aspects to be considered for the performance of bronchoscopy in COVID pandemic, to ensure safety for both for patients and healthcare personnel.

Background: Masticatory forces generate various degrees of stress and strain in the periodontium of teeth which determine the clinical functions and load-bearing capacity of the teeth. There are few in vitro studies that have analyzed stress generated due to combined forces acting on the teeth. Thus, the objective of the present study was to do a comparative analysis of the influence of various stresses on the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone of maxillary central incisor with normal bone height and reduced bone height under simulated standard masticatory using finite element stress analysis. Methodology: A 3D model of the tooth was obtained with the help of ANSYS software. These models were subjected to various oblique forces, i.e., 100N and 235.9N, applied at 45° angle on the lingual surface of the maxillary central incisor and stress values were recorded in three dimensions. The results from FE analysis were analyzed using 3D Von Mises Criteria. Results: It was observed that in healthy periodontium; it was observed that among the periodontal structure studied, the maximum stress levels were exerted on root followed by cortical bone, cancellous bone, and PDL, irrespective of the force, as compared to the diseased periodontium, in which the bone height was reduced, the maximum stresses were on root followed by cortical bone, PDL, and cancellous bone. Conclusion: The main factor governing the success of any periodontal procedure depends on the height of the remaining bone and the amount of force exerted on to the tooth and the stress generated within the tooth. The finite element method could be of substantial importance in this respect as it can assess the stresses of various occlusal forces on the periodontal ligament, root, cortical bone, and cancellous bone of teeth in a periodontally healthy and diseased state.

Abstract Background Malaria in sub-Saharan Africa (sSA) is thought to be mostly caused by Plasmodium falciparum. Recently, growing reports of cases due to Plasmodium ovale, Plasmodium malariae, and Plasmodium vivax have been increasingly observed to play a role in malaria epidemiology in sSA. This in fact is due to the usage of very sensitive diagnostic tools (e.g. PCR), which have highlighted the underestimation of non-falciparum malaria in this sub-region. Plasmodium vivax was historically thought to be absent in sSA due to the high prevalence of the Duffy negativity in individuals residing in this sub-continent. Recent studies reporting detection of vivax malaria in Duffy-negative individuals from Mali, Mauritania, Cameroon challenge this notion. Methods Following previous report of P. vivax in Duffy-negative individuals in Nigeria, samples were further collected and assessed RDT and/or microscopy. Thereafter, malaria positive samples were subjected to conventional PCR method and DNA sequencing to confirm both single/mixed infections as well as the Duffy status of the individuals. Results Amplification of Plasmodium gDNA was successful in 59.9% (145/242) of the evaluated isolates and as expected P. falciparum was the most predominant (91.7%) species identified. Interestingly, four P. vivax isolates were identified either as single (3) or mixed (one P. falciparum/P. vivax) infection. Sequencing results confirmed all vivax isolates as truly vivax malaria and the patient were of Duffy-negative genotype. Conclusion Identification of additional vivax isolates among Duffy-negative individuals from Nigeria, substantiate the expanding body of evidence on the ability of P. vivax to infect RBCs that do not express the DARC gene. Hence, such genetic-epidemiological study should be conducted at the country level in order to evaluate the true burden of P. vivax in Nigeria.

Background: Dichrostachys cinerea Wight. and Arn. of Mimosaceae family commonly called as Veerataru in Ayurveda. Traditionally, it has been used in diabetes, rheumatism, urinary calculi, renal problems, and menstrual disorders. The plant has been reported to possess diuretic, antiprotozoal, antihelmintic, anticancer, antibacterial, antidiarrheal, and hepatoprotective activity, etc., Although it is an important plant, till date, no reported anatomical, chromatographic data are available on roots. Aim: The present study is aimed to establish anatomical characters of fresh roots of D. cinerea followed by antihyperglycemic and chromatographic studies of various fractions of hydroalcoholic extract of roots. Materials and Methods: Morphoanatomical studies were carried out according to the quality control standards of Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India. Hydroalcoholic extract was subjected to fractionation with nonpolar-to-polar solvents. Antihyperglycemic studies were carried out by glucose tolerance test. Results: Transverse section of the fresh root shows the presence of suberized cork, parenchymatous cells containing numerous starch grains. Ethyl acetate fraction has produced significantly (P < 0.01) highest antihyperglycemic activity (52.32%) at a dose of 400 mg/kg among all fractions. High-performance thin-layer chromatography analysis also confirmed the presence of phenols in ethyl acetate and butanol fractions. Conclusion: The current anatomical and chromatographic analysis can be considered as reference standards for future studies on D. cinerea roots. A traditional claim on antidiabetic activity of roots has been scientifically established.

Introduction: Periodontitis is inflammation of periodontium. Periodontal disease is associated with various risk factors among which female hormonal alterations such as menopause have been found to be connected with periodontal breakdown and osteoporosis in women. The aim of this study was to determine the periodontal status in pre- and postmenopausal females. Materials and Methods: In this study, 60 female patients were analyzed aged between 40 and 60 years. Group 1 (test) comprised 30 premenopausal women with/without chronic periodontitis and Group II (control) comprised 30 postmenopausal women with/without chronic periodontitis. After recording clinical parameters, the scores were provided using Orthopantomograph for each patient. Paired t-test was applied for intragroup comparison and independent sample t-test was applied for intergroup comparison. The value of P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The mean plaque index, gingival index, calculus index, pocket probing depth, and clinical attachment loss scores in the premenopausal group were less as compared to postmenopausal group. Both the groups showed statistically significant differences with T=15.28 and P = 0.01. Conclusion: Postmenopausal women are more susceptible to periodontitis. Hence, precaution and initial management of oral diseases should be the utmost priority in women's health. The effect of sex hormones can be reduced with regular dental examination, maintaining good oral hygiene, and hormonal replacement therapies.

Background: High dose gonadotropin stimulation protocols may increase costs, patient discomfort, likelihood of ovarian hyper stimulation syndrome (OHSS), ovarian torsion and increased bleeding after multiple ovarian punctures. In addition, it is possible that high dose stimulation may result in impaired oocyte “quality” with adverse effect of embryonic ploidy. This may negate any benefits seen from a higher oocyte yield after high dose stimulation. Aim: To determine the proportion of euploid blastocysts resulting from higher versus lower dose ovarian stimulation protocols. Method: Multicentre randomised controlled trial recruiting 57 women who were treated with ovarian stimulation using either 150 or 300 IU Menopur per day. In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) or Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) were performed according to individual unit protocol and embryos were cultured to blastocyst stage. A trophectoderm biopsy was performed for preimplant action genetic testing for aneuploidy. Results: The number of oocytes obtained from women randomised to 150 IU Menopur was between 3–17 (mean=9), whereas the number of oocytes obtained from women randomised to 300 IU Menopur was between 3–24 (mean=11). There was a positive linear relationship between serum AMH concentration and oocyte yield in both the 150 & 300 IU Menopur groups (R=0.3359, R2=0.1129 & R=0.3741, R2=0.1399). 63% of blastocysts were euploid in the 150 IU Menopur group and 75% in the 300 IU Menopur group (p=0.17). Conclusion: The higher dose ovarian stimulation protocol did not significantly increase the number of oocytes retrieved, nor did the higher dose protocol reduce the proportion of euploid embryos created. This study does not support the hypothesis that use of higher doses of gonadotropin for ovarian stimulation results in a reduction in the proportion of euploid embryos obtained after IVF.

Aim: The objective of this study was to analyze the pharmacognostical, phytochemical and antioxidant studies of aqueous ethanolic extract, petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate and butanol fractions of Dichrostachys cinerea root (Veerataru). Materials and Methods: The pharmacognostical studies on D. cinerea root including parameters such as powder microscopy, extractive values, ash values, and fluorescence and the phytochemical studies are established. The aqueous ethanolic extract and all the fractions were screened against few free radicals, such as diphenylpicrylhydrazyl radical, hydroxyl radical, nitric oxide radical and superoxide anion radical. Results: Powder microscopy revealed the presence of lignified crystal fibers, stone cells, and prism-shaped crystals. All the fractions were rich in steroids, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, and carbohydrates. High level of total phenolic content (158 mg gallic acid equivalent/g) and flavonoids (32 mg rutin equivalent/g) was observed in ethyl acetate fraction. Conclusions: It is concluded that the ethyl acetate fraction followed by butanol fraction of D. cinerea root has strong antioxidant potential. Further study is required for the isolation of bioactive component, which may serve as a potent natural antioxidant.

Background & objectives: With the development of technological know-how, in recent years, malaria research in India has advanced to a great extent and the corresponding research is being translated into the form of publications, which has started to pile in thousands over the years. The purpose of the present study was to perform a bibliometric analysis on malaria research in India from its inception. Methods: The Web of Science (WoS) platform developed by Clarivate Analytics was utilized to retrieve publications on malaria research in India. The publications were retrieved in bibtex format and were further used for analysis in “R” Bibliometrix package. The analysis included number of publications in each year along with their keywords, title, authors, institutes, abstract, journal name and countries. Results: A total of 2334 publications on malaria in India were obtained from 1909 to 2019 (March). The emerging trends on themes of malaria research in India were unraveled with the help of keywords co-occurrence network analysis. The bibliometric analysis shed light on the evolution of journals and trends on choice of journals that the authors made over the years and the contribution of different countries in malaria research. Interpretation & conclusion: The bibliometric analysis performed over 110 yr not only contributes towards understanding the trends based on research topics, but also on the importance of data science. Assuming the fact that the number of publications would increase from thousands to lakhs in future; going forward, it has become imperative for the researchers and students to develop methods using computer-based algorithms and carry out literature review which allows for in-depth study of vast amount of literature.

Background: Vitiligo is a depigmenting disorder which can be psychologically devastating. Childhood-onset vitiligo has different epidemiological and clinical characteristics as compared to adults. Aims and Objectives: The aim was to study the clinico-epidemiological and hematologic investigation profiles of childhood vitiligo. Materials and Methods: First 200 pediatric patients younger than 18 years, with vitiligo who attended the dermatology outpatient department of a tertiary center in Northeast India, between September 2015 and August 2017 were included in the study. A detailed history and examination along with autoimmune diseases and laboratory parameters were recorded. Results: Among the 200 patients, 62% were girls. The mean age was 10.3 ± 4.9 years. The mean age at onset was 9.1 ± 4.9 years (ranging 2 months–17 years), with duration of disease varying from 1 month to 8 years with mean duration of 1.39 ± 1.63 years. Most common pattern of vitiligo was vulgaris (39.5%) followed by focal (25%), segmental (15.5%) genital (10%), acral and lateral lip (8%), and acrofacial (4%). Family history of vitiligo was seen in 12% of patients. In 96% patients, only

Recurrent loss-of-function mutations of spliceosome gene, ZRSR2, occur in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). Mutation/loss of ZRSR2 in human myeloid cells primarily causes impaired splicing of the U12-type introns. In order to further investigate the role of this splice factor in RNA splicing and hematopoietic development, we generated mice lacking ZRSR2. Unexpectedly, Zrsr2-deficient mice developed normal hematopoiesis with no abnormalities in myeloid differentiation evident in either young or ≥1-year old knockout mice. Repopulation ability of Zrsr2-deficient hematopoietic stem cells was also unaffected in both competitive and non-competitive reconstitution assays. Myeloid progenitors lacking ZRSR2 exhibited mis-splicing of U12-type introns, however, this phenotype was moderate compared to the ZRSR2-deficient human cells. Our investigations revealed that a closely related homolog, Zrsr1, expressed in the murine hematopoietic cells, but not in human cells contributes to splicing of U12-type introns. Depletion of Zrsr1 in Zrsr2 KO myeloid cells exacerbated retention of the U12-type introns, thus highlighting a collective role of ZRSR1 and ZRSR2 in murine U12-spliceosome. We also demonstrate that aberrant retention of U12-type introns of MAPK9 and MAPK14 leads to their reduced protein expression. Overall, our findings highlight that both ZRSR1 and ZRSR2 are functional components of the murine U12-spliceosome, and depletion of both proteins is required to accurately model ZRSR2-mutant MDS in mice.

All approved coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines in current use are safe, effective, and reduce the risk of severe illness. Although data on the immunological presentation of patients with COVID-19 is limited, increasing experimental evidence supports the significant contribution of B and T cells towards the resolution of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. Despite the availability of several COVID-19 vaccines with high efficacy, more effective vaccines are still needed to protect against the new variants of SARS-CoV-2. Employing a comprehensive immunoinformatic prediction algorithm and leveraging the genetic closeness with SARS-CoV, we have predicted potential immune epitopes in the structural proteins of SARS-CoV-2. The S and N proteins of SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-CoVs are main targets of antibody detection and have motivated us to design four multi-epitope vaccines which were based on our predicted B- and T-cell epitopes of SARS-CoV-2 structural proteins. The cardinal epitopes selected for the vaccine constructs are predicted to possess antigenic, non-allergenic, and cytokine-inducing properties. Additionally, some of the predicted epitopes have been experimentally validated in published papers. Furthermore, we used the C-ImmSim server to predict effective immune responses induced by the epitope-based vaccines. Taken together, the immune epitopes predicted in this study provide a platform for future experimental validations which may facilitate the development of effective vaccine candidates and epitope-based serological diagnostic assays.

Rotavirus is the most common cause of acute gastroenteritis in infants and children worldwide. The functional correlation of B- and T-cells to long-lasting immunity against rotavirus infection in the literature is limited. In this work, a series of computational immuno-informatics approaches were applied and identified 28 linear B-cells, 26 conformational B-cell, 44 TC cell and 40 TH cell binding epitopes for structural and non-structural proteins of rotavirus. Further selection of putative B and T cell epitopes in the multi-epitope vaccine construct was carried out based on immunogenicity, conservancy, allergenicity and the helical content of predicted epitopes. An in-silico vaccine constructs was developed using an N-terminal adjuvant (RGD motif) followed by TC and TH cell epitopes and B-cell epitope with an appropriate linker. Multi-threading models of multi-epitope vaccine construct with B- and T-cell epitopes were generated and molecular dynamics simulation was performed to determine the stability of designed vaccine. Codon optimized multi-epitope vaccine antigens was expressed and affinity purified using the E. coli expression system. Further the T cell epitope presentation assay using the recombinant multi-epitope constructs and the T cell epitope predicted and identified in this study have not been investigated. Multi-epitope vaccine construct encompassing predicted B- and T-cell epitopes may help to generate long-term immune responses against rotavirus. The computational findings reported in this study may provide information in developing epitope-based vaccine and diagnostic assay for rotavirus-led diarrhea in children's.

Cyclin Dependent Kinase 9 (CDK9) associates with Bromodomain and Extra-Terminal Domain (BET) proteins to promote transcriptional elongation by phosphorylation of serine 2 of RNAP II C-terminal domain. We examined the therapeutic potential of selective CDK9 inhibitors (AZD 4573 and MC180295) against human multiple myeloma cells in vitro. Short-hairpin RNA silencing of CDK9 in Multiple Myeloma (MM) cell lines reduced cell viability compared to control cells showing the dependency of MM cells on CDK9. In order to explore synergy with the CDK9 inhibitor, proteolysis targeting chimeric molecule (PROTAC) ARV 825 was added. This latter drug causes ubiquitination of BET proteins resulting in their rapid and efficient degradation. Combination treatment of MM cells with ARV 825 and AZD 4573 markedly reduced their protein expression of BRD 2, BRD 4, MYC and phosphorylated RNA pol II as compared to each single agent alone. Combination treatment synergistically inhibited multiple myeloma cells both in vitro and in vivo with insignificant weight loss. The combination also resulted in marked increase of apoptotic cells at low dose compared to single agent alone. Taken together, our studies show for the first time that the combination of a BET PROTAC (ARV 825) plus AZD 4573 (CDK9 inhibitor) is effective against MM cells.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a hematological disease marked by abnormal growth of B cells in bone marrow. Inherent chromosomal instability and DNA damage are major hallmarks of MM, which implicates an aberrant DNA repair mechanism. Studies have implicated a role for CDK12 in the control of expression of DNA damage response genes. In this study, we examined the effect of a small molecule inhibitor of CDK12–THZ531 on MM cells. Treatment of MM cells with THZ531 led to heightened cell death accompanied by an extensive effect on gene expression changes. In particular, we observed downregulation of genes involved in DNA repair pathways. With this insight, we extended our study to identify synthetic lethal mechanisms that could be exploited for the treatment of MM cells. Combination of THZ531 with either DNA-PK inhibitor (KU-0060648) or PARP inhibitor (Olaparib) led to synergistic cell death. In addition, combination treatment of THZ531 with Olaparib significantly reduced tumor burden in animal models. Our findings suggest that using a CDK12 inhibitor in combination with other DNA repair inhibitors may establish an effective therapeutic regimen to benefit myeloma patients.

Background: The sexual minority status of the gay and bisexual community puts them into a unique vulnerability state for mental health problems. One of the factors associated with this stress is remaining in “closet” leading to a higher prevalence of depression. Aims: This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of depression in Indian men who have sex with men (MSM) and to assess the association of depression with disclosure, if any, in this community. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional observational study of Indian men recruited through an advertisement on a dating website exclusive for gay men. Depression was assessed on self-reported scale of the Centre for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale-Revised (CESD-R). Results: Most of the men who took part in the study belonged to the age group of 25–35 years with mean age of the study sample being 30.31 years (standard deviation [SD] ±8.58). A majority of them were salaried, had higher education, and belonged to the Hindu religion. Most of the participants were either exclusively or predominantly homosexual (72%) followed by men with bisexual orientation (18%). On measures of disclosure/“outness,” out of 277 respondents, 171 (61.73%) were not open about their sexuality, 92 (33.21%) were sometimes open, while only 14 (5.05%) were always open about their sexual orientation in front of others. The average age of coming out of closet (n = 232) was 19.71 years (SD ± 6.67). The mean score on CESD-R scale was 25.65 (SD ± 16.38). Depression was present in 163 participants (58.84%) of the entire sample. The depression scores negatively correlated with age, with scores being higher in younger age group. Depression was not associated with the type of sexual orientation. Although the depression scores were higher in those who were in the closet, it was not statistically significant. Those who had negative experience of coming out of closet had significantly higher scores on CESD-R compared to those who had positive reaction on coming out. Conclusion: Depression is highly prevalent in Indian MSM.

In this work, characteristics of various ball bearing parameters are studied under different loads and rotational speeds. By using Dimensional Analysis (DA), dimensionless parameters are computed which provides solution for a group of parameters. This analysis can be accomplished by using the Buckingham π-theorem. DA leads to reduction of the number of independent parameters involved in a problem. These independent parameters get expressed as dimensionless groups. These dimensionless groups are always ratios of important physical quantities involved in the problem of interest. In modeling and experimentation, its main function is to reduce the amount of independent variables, simplify the solution, and generalize the results. It becomes an effective method, especially if a complete mathematical model of the investigated process is not known. Moreover, in the present work the Buckingham π-theorem is applied to find the influencing parameter π5 by using the Taguchi method.

As composites continue to be increasingly used, finite element material models that homogenize the composite response become the only logical choice as not only modeling the entire composite microstructure is computationally expensive but obtaining the entire suite of experimental data to characterize deformation and failure may not be possible. The focus of this paper is the development of a modeling framework where plasticity, damage, and failure-related experimental data are obtained for each composite constituent. Mesoscale finite elements models consisting of multiple repeating unit cells are then generated and used to represent a typical carbon fiber/epoxy resin unidirectional composite to generate the complete principal direction stress-strain curves. These models are subjected to various uniaxial states of stress and compared with experimental data. They demonstrate a reasonable match and provide the basic framework to completely define the composite homogenized material model that can be used as a vehicle for failure predictions.

Commercially used industrial baking enamels consist of alkyd or polyester resin with melamine formaldehyde. These resins are mainly derived from fossil resources. Considering growing environmental legislation regarding use of petroleum based raw materials, utilization of renewable resources to synthesize various chemistries can be the only obvious option as far as academia and industries are concerns. The present work deals with exploration of one of the natural resources (Cardanol) for polyol synthesis, its characterization (FTIR and NMR) and its curing behavior with melamine formaldehyde resin by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The optimized formulations from DSC study were further evaluated for general coating properties to study the suitability of developed polyol for industrial coating application. The experimental studies revealed that melamine content in the curing mixtures and thereby developed crosslinking density played an important role in deciding the coatings properties.

Proteolysis targeting chimeric molecule ARV 825 causes ubiquitination of bromodomains resulting in their efficient degradation by proteasome activity. Bromodomain degradation down-regulates MYC transcription contributing to growth inhibition of various human cancers. We examined the therapeutic potential of ARV 825 against multiple myeloma (MM) cells both in vitro and in vivo. In a dose-dependent manner, ARV 825 inhibited proliferation of 13 human MM cell lines and three fresh patient samples, and was associated with cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. ARV 825 rapidly and efficiently degraded BRD 2 and BRD 4. Sensitivity of MM cells to ARV 825 was positively correlated with cereblon levels. RNA sequencing analysis showed important genes such as CCR1, RGS, MYB and MYC were down-regulated by ARV 825. A total of 170 small molecule inhibitors were screened for synergy with ARV 825. Combination of ARV 825 with inhibitor of either dual PI3K/mTOR, CRM1, VEGFR, PDGFRα/b, FLT3, IGF-1R, protein kinase C, CBP-EP300 or JAK1/2 showed synergistic activity. Importantly, ARV 825 significantly inhibited the growth of MM xenografts and improved mice survival. Taken together, our results, in conjunction with recently published findings, provide a rationale for investigating the efficacy of ARV 825 for MM, use of cereblon as a biomarker for therapy of MM patients, and the combination of ARV 825 with small molecule inhibitors to improve the outcome of MM patients.

Chromosomal translocation t(8;21)(q22;q22) which leads to the generation of oncogenic RUNX1-RUNX1T1 (AML1-ETO) fusion is observed in approximately 10% of acute myelogenous leukemia (AML). To identify somatic mutations that co-operate with t(8;21)-driven leukemia, we performed whole and targeted exome sequencing of an Asian cohort at diagnosis and relapse. We identified high frequency of truncating alterations in ASXL2 along with recurrent mutations of KIT, TET2, MGA, FLT3, and DHX15 in this subtype of AML. To investigate in depth the role of ASXL2 in normal hematopoiesis, we utilized a mouse model of ASXL2 deficiency. Loss of ASXL2 caused progressive hematopoietic defects characterized by myeloid hyperplasia, splenomegaly, extramedullary hematopoiesis, and poor reconstitution ability in transplantation models. Parallel analyses of young and >1-year old Asxl2-deficient mice revealed age-dependent perturbations affecting, not only myeloid and erythroid differentiation, but also maturation of lymphoid cells. Overall, these findings establish a critical role for ASXL2 in maintaining steady state hematopoiesis, and provide insights into how its loss primes the expansion of myeloid cells.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT), also known as hereditary motor sensory neuropathy, is a heterogeneous group of disorders best known for causing inherited forms of peripheral neuropathy. The X-linked form, CMTX1, is caused by mutations in the gap junction protein beta 1 (GJB1) gene, expressed both by peripheral Schwann cells and central oligodendrocytes. Central manifestations are known but are rare, and there are few case reports of leukoencephalopathy with transient or persistent neurological deficits in patients with this CMT subtype. Here, we report the case of a man with multiple male and female family members affected by neuropathy who carries a pathologic mutation in GJB1. He has experienced three transient episodes with variable neurological deficits over the course of 7 years with corresponding changes on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This case illustrates CMT1X as a rare cause of transient neurological deficit and demonstrates the evolution of associated reversible abnormalities on MRI over time. To the best of our knowledge, this report provides the longest period of serial imaging in a single patient with this condition in the English language literature.

Maturation of granulocytes is dependent on controlled gene expression by myeloid lineage restricted transcription factors. CEBPE is one of the essential transcription factors required for granulocytic differentiation. Identification of downstream targets of CEBPE is vital to understand better its role in terminal granulopoiesis. In this study, we have identified Card10 as a novel target of CEBPE. We show that CEBPE binds to regulatory elements upstream of the murine Card10 locus, and expression of CARD10 is significantly reduced in Cebpe knock-out mice. Silencing Card10 in a human cell line and in murine primary cells impaired granulopoiesis, affecting expression of genes involved in myeloid cell development and function. Taken together, our data demonstrate for the first time that Card10 is expressed in granulocytes and is a direct target of CEBPE with functions extending to myeloid differentiation.

Objective. Neonatal sepsis is associated with abnormal neurodevelopmental outcomes but not with poor growth at 9 to 15 months of corrected age in LBW infants. Design, Setting, and Participants. This is a prospective cohort study involving 128 eligible preterm low-birth-weight (LBW) infants admitted during the period of 2013-2014 to the Durgabai Deshmukh Hospital and Research Center. All patients were followed up in the outpatient Department of Pediatrics. They were divided into the sepsis and nonsepsis group. Results. A total of 94 infants were evaluated (40 in sepsis and 54 in nonsepsis group). At the age of 9–15 months, low-birth-weight infants with neonatal sepsis had an increased risk of neurodevelopmental disorders (67.5 versus 20.3%; RR: 3.31 (1.87–5.85)). There is no statistically significant difference in the growth outcomes. Conclusion. Neonatal infections are associated with the abnormal neurodevelopmental outcomes in LBW infants but there was no significant difference at growth outcome at 9 to 15 months of corrected age between both groups.

Malaria is a vector-borne infectious disease, caused by five different species of the genus Plasmodium, and is endemic to many tropical and sub-tropical countries of the globe. At present, malaria diagnosis at the primary health care level in India is conducted by either microscopy or rapid diagnostic test (RDT). In recent years, molecular diagnosis (by PCR assay), has emerged as the most sensitive method for malaria diagnosis. India is highly endemic to malaria and shoulders the burden of two major malaria parasites, Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax. Previous studies using PCR diagnostic assay had unraveled several interesting facts on distribution of malaria parasites in India. However, these studies had several limitations from small sample size to limited geographical areas of sampling. In order to mitigate these limitations, we have collected finger-prick blood samples from 2,333 malaria symptomatic individuals in nine states from 11 geographic locations, covering almost the entire malaria endemic regions of India and performed all the three diagnostic tests (microscopy, RDT and PCR assay) and also have conducted comparative assessment on the performance of the three diagnostic tests. Since PCR assay turned out to be highly sensitive (827 malaria positive cases) among the three types of tests, we have utilized data from PCR diagnostic assay for analyses and inferences. The results indicate varied distributional prevalence of P. vivax and P. falciparum according to locations in India, and also the mixed species infection due to these two species. The proportion of P. falciparum to P. vivax was found to be 49:51, and percentage of mixed species infections due to these two parasites was found to be 13% of total infections. Considering India is set for malaria elimination by 2030, the present malaria epidemiological information is of high importance.

Background: Although there are reports describing the association of alternations of bone and mineral metabolism in epileptic patients with long-term anticonvulsant therapy, there are only limited Indian studies which have looked at this aspect. Objectives: This study was done to compare the prevalence of changes in bone mineral parameters and bone mineral density (BMD) in ambulant individuals on long-term anticonvulsant therapy with age- and body mass index (BMI)-matched healthy controls. Materials and Methods: There were 55 men (on medications for more than 6 months) and age- and BMI-matched 53 controls. Drug history, dietary calcium intake (DCI), and duration of sunlight exposure were recorded. Bone mineral parameters and BMD were measured. Results: The control group had a significantly higher daily DCI with mean ± SD of 396 ± 91 mg versus 326 ± 101 mg (P = 0.007) and more sunlight exposure of 234 ± 81 vs 167 ± 69 min (P = 0.05). BMD at the femoral neck was significantly lower in cases (0.783 ± 0.105 g/cm 2 ) when compared to controls (0.819 ± 0.114 g/cm 2 ). Majority of the patients (61%) had low femoral neck BMD (P = 0.04).
