Abstract Background Effective management strategies are crucial in minimizing the adverse consequences associated with the leafhopper, Amrasca devastans (Dist.) (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae). Economic limitations to entomopathogenic fungi production present a substantial challenge, particularly in developing countries. This study aimed to investigate a cost-effective solid-state fermentation (SSF) for large-scale production of Purpureocillium lilacinum PL1 conidia to manage A. devastans infestations in okra cultivation. Results Rice and maize were demonstrated as highly suitable substrates for producing conidia densities of over 2 × 1010 conidia g−1. Furthermore, the influence of agricultural phytosanitary agents on the growth rates of P. lilacinum PL1 was evaluated. Certain pesticides were ineffective on the expansion of P. lilacinum PL1 colonies, while fungicides exhibited complete inhibition. The laboratory investigation revealed that 1 × 107 conidia ml−1 of P. lilacinum PL1 exhibited a success rate of 88.66% in decreasing the population of A. devastans nymphs in vitro. Furthermore, field investigations carried out in okra plantations demonstrated that the utilization of P. lilacinum PL1 at the concentration of 1 × 107 conidia ml−1 of resulted in a significant reduction of the pest nymph population by 72.87% subsequent to the 2 applications. Conclusion In conclusion, the cost-effective mass production of P. lilacinum PL1 conidia through SSF presents a promising solution for managing A. devastans infestations in okra farming, particularly in economically challenged regions.

Seasonal changes in freshwater phytoplankton assemblages at Tuyen Lam Reservoir in the Central Highlands of Vietnam were classified into 23 functional groups based on physiological, morphological, and ecological characteristics. A total of 168 species were recorded during 10 surveys from 2015 to 2019 at 7 sampling sites, with Chlorophyta dominating in number of species. Phytoplankton abundance varied from 0.18×105 to 21.2×105 cells/L during the study period, mainly due to cyanobacteria. Seven of the 23 functional groups were considered to be dominant (relative density > 5%). The dominant functional groups were groups M and G in the dry season and groups M, G, P, and E in the rainy season. Group M (Microcystis aeruginosa) was the most common in both seasons, while group P (Closterium, Staurastrum, Aulacoseira), group E (Dinobryon, Synura), and group G (Sphaerocystis, Eudorina) were more common in the rainy season. The Shannon diversity index (H¢) showed that phytoplankton communities were relatively diverse and that most of the study sites were lightly polluted. However, the ecological status has deteriorated at some locations due to the overgrowth of group M, leading to eutrophication in this reservoir. This study highlights the usefulness of functional groups in the study of seasonal changes in phytoplankton dynamics. Functional groups are applied for the first time at Tuyen Lam Reservoir and can be used to predict early-stage cyanobacterial blooms in future studies.

Objective There are no reports on the burden of suicidal ideation and suicide attempts in the general population of French Polynesia (FP). We aimed to improve suicide prevention and mental health care by assessing the prevalence of suicide risk and major mental health disorders and care among adults in FP. Methods We conducted the Mental Health in General Population Survey in FP during 2015 to 2017. Participants were selected using the quota method to obtain a representative sample of the general population. Suicide risk and psychiatric diagnoses were assessed using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview. Results We included 968 people aged 18 years or older. The prevalence of current suicidal ideation (13.1%) and current (2.6%) and lifetime suicide attempts (18.6%), as well as mental health disorders (42.8%), was high in FP. A notable proportion of participants with these conditions did not seek medical assistance. Conclusion A high prevalence of suicide risk and mental health disorders was found in the general population of FP. Suicide prevention and mental health plans are needed in FP that include better access to primary care for the diagnosis and treatment of mental health disorders. Further research is needed to clarify cultural risk and protective factors.

Objectives To assess understudied, alternative suicide prevention modalities in a mental health care setting. Methods This was a prospective study of patients (n = 140, 68 cases and 72 controls) who were admitted to hospital or who contacted an SOS suicide crisis line for suicidal ideation or attempts. Psychiatric diagnoses (Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview) and intensity of anxiety/depression/suicidality (Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale, Montgomery–Åsberg Depression Rating Scale, and Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation) were assessed. All intervention group subjects received a crisis card with a crisis line number, interviews with psychologists or volunteers and a telephone call on days 10 to 21, then 6 months later. These subjects also had a choice between two further 4-month interventions: body contact care or mobile intervention team visits. Results The interventions significantly reduced the number of suicide attempts and suicide (3%) at 6 months compared with the control condition (12%). There were fewer losses to follow-up in the intervention group (7.35%) than in the control group (9.72%). Conclusions The results favour the implementation of integrated care and maintaining contact in suicide prevention.

The proportional relationship between the infrared (IR) transmittance of a transparent material and its IR-induced heat transfer can be explained via a simple model. An agreement between the theory and the experimental work was examined by measuring the temperature rising inside a heat-insulated box with glass windows under IR irradiation, where the material of the glass windows was modified from corning glass (CG) to 9 at% Nb-doped TiO2 (TNO) fabricated by sputtering deposition. The fabricated TNO thin film was mostly transparent in a visible region and had a low transparency in the IR region, which, in turn, produced the self-cooling effect inside the insulated box. In comparison to the window glass made by CG, the temperature increase inside the box would be 24% less if the window was made by CG coated by TNO (TNO on CG). This suggests the possibility of manufacturing products with desirable features in the energy-cut cooling. The energy-cut was found to decline proportionally to the decrease of the glass window area.

The World Health Organization Suicide trends in at-risk territories study is a multi-site regional research program operating first in French Polynesia and countries of the Western Pacific, then extended to the world. The aims of the study were to establish a monitoring system for suicidal behaviors and to conduct a randomised control trial intervention for non-fatal suicidal behaviors. The latter part is the purpose of the present article. Over the period 2008-2010, 515 patients were admitted at the Emergency Department of the Centre Hospitalier de Polynésie Française for suicidal behavior. Those then hospitalized in the Psychiatry Emergency Unit were asked to be involved in the study and randomly allocated to either Treatment As Usual (TAU) or TAU plus Brief Intervention and Contact (BIC), which provides a psycho-education session and a follow-up of 9 phone contacts over an 18-months period. One hundred persons were assigned to TAU, while 100 participants were allocated to the BIC group. At the end of the follow-up there were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of number of presentations to the hospital for repeated suicidal behaviors. Although the study could not demonstrate the superiority of a treatment over the other, nevertheless – given its importance – the investigation captured public attention and was able to contribute to the awareness of the need of suicide prevention in French Polynesia. The BIC model of intervention seemed to particularly suit the geographical and health care context of the country.

Tacrine (THA), the first clinically effective acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor and the first approved drug for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), was withdrawn from the market due to its side effects, particularly its hepatotoxicity. Nowadays, THA serves as a valuable scaffold for the design of novel agents potentially applicable for AD treatment. One such compound, namely 7-methoxytacrine (7-MEOTA), exhibits an intriguing profile, having suppressed hepatotoxicity and concomitantly retaining AChE inhibition properties. Another interesting class of AChE inhibitors represents Huprines, designed by merging two fragments of the known AChE inhibitors—THA and (−)-huperzine A. Several members of this compound family are more potent human AChE inhibitors than the parent compounds. The most promising are so-called huprines X and Y. Here, we report the design, synthesis, biological evaluation, and in silico studies of 2-methoxyhuprine that amalgamates structural features of 7-MEOTA and huprine Y in one molecule.

Abstract Background The risk factors for scrub typhus in Vietnam remain unknown. Scrub typhus caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi often presents as an undifferentiated febrile illness and remains under appreciated due to the limited availability of diagnostic tests. This tropical rickettsial illness is increasingly recognized as an important cause of non-malaria acute undifferentiated fever in Asia. This study aimed to investigate behavioural and ecological related risk factors of scrub typhus to prevent this potentially life-threatening disease in Vietnam. Methods We conducted a clinical hospital-based active surveillance study, and a retrospective residence-enrolment date-age-matched case–control study in Khanh Hoa province, Vietnam, from August 2018 to March 2020. Clinical examinations, polymerase chain reaction and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay IgM tests were applied to define cases and controls. All enrolled participants filled out a questionnaire including demographic socio-economic status, personal behaviors/protective equipment, habitat connections, land use, and possible exposure to the vector. Multivariable conditional logistic regression was used to define the scrub typhus associated risk factors. Results We identified 44 confirmed cases and matched them with 152 controls. Among cases and controls, the largest age group was the 41–50 years old and males accounted for 61.4% and 42.8%, respectively. There were similarities in demographic characteristics between the two groups, with the exception of occupation. Several factors were significantly associated with acquisition of scrub typhus, including sitting/laying directly on household floor [adjusted OR (aOR) = 4.9, 95% CI: 1.6–15.1, P = 0.006], household with poor sanitation/conditions (aOR = 7.9, 95% CI: 1.9–32.9, P = 0.005), workplace environment with risk (aOR = 3.0, 95% CI: 1.2–7.6, P = 0.020), always observing mice around home (aOR = 3.7, 95% CI: 1.4–9.9, P = 0.008), and use of personal protective equipment in the field (aOR = 0.4, 95% CI: 0.1–1.1, P = 0.076). Conclusions Ecological and household hygiene-related factors were more associated with scrub typhus infection, than individual-level exposure activities in the hyper-endemic area. These findings support local education and allow people to protect themselves from scrub typhus, especially in areas with limitations in diagnostic capacity. Graphical abstract

Abstract We demonstrated the design of pre-additive manufacturing microalloying elements in tuning the microstructure of iron (Fe)-based alloys for their tunable mechanical properties. We tailored the microalloying stoichiometry of the feedstock to control the grain sizes of the metallic alloy systems. Two specific microalloying stoichiometries were reported, namely biodegradable iron powder with 99.5% purity (BDFe) and that with 98.5% (BDFe-Mo). Compared with the BDFe, the BDFe-Mo powder was found to have lower coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) value and better oxidation resistance during consecutive heating and cooling cycles. The selective laser melting (SLM)-built BDFe-Mo exhibited high ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 1200 MPa and fair elongation of 13.5%, while the SLM-built BDFe alloy revealed a much lower UTS of 495 MPa and a relatively better elongation of 17.5%, indicating the strength enhancement compared with the other biodegradable systems. Such an enhanced mechanical behavior in the BDFe-Mo was assigned to the dominant mechanism of ferrite grain refinement coupled with precipitate strengthening. Our findings suggest the tunability of outstanding strength-ductility combination by tailoring the pre-additive manufacturing microalloying elements with their proper concentrations.

Twelve novel analogs of STAT3 inhibitor BP-1-102 were designed and synthesised with the aim to modify hydrophobic fragments of the molecules that are important for interaction with the STAT3 SH2 domain. The cytotoxic activity of the reference and novel compounds was evaluated using several human and two mouse cancer cell lines. BP-1-102 and its two analogs emerged as effective cytotoxic agents and were further tested in additional six human and two murine cancer cell lines, in all of which they manifested the cytotoxic effect in a micromolar range. Reference compound S3I-201.1066 was found ineffective in all tested cell lines, in contrast to formerly published data. The ability of selected BP-1-102 analogs to induce apoptosis and inhibition of STAT3 receptor-mediated phosphorylation was confirmed. The structure–activity relationship confirmed a demand for two hydrophobic substituents, i.e. the pentafluorophenyl moiety and another spatially bulky moiety, for effective cytotoxic activity and STAT3 inhibition.

Rare-earth-activated photonic structures are fundamental actors in widespread applications such as luminescence sources, lasers, integrated photonics, solar cells, biomedical sensors and imaging, biomarkers, and theragnostics. However, there are several critical problems to face, concerning the quantum yield of the rare-earth (RE) based photonic systems such as: low absorption cross-section of rare-earths, physical and chemical clusterings, and non-radiative relaxation processes. Exploiting semiconductors as RE host-sensitizers is among appealing approaches to overcome these matters. By incorporating rare-earth ions in semiconductor nanocrystals, several advantages concerning the quantum yield of the systems can be achieved: (i) high absorption and emission cross-sections, (ii) reduction of the non-radiative relaxation processes, and (iii) tailoring of the ion-ion interaction by the control of the rare-earth ion partition. In this review paper, a survey on the investigation of SnO2 nanocrystals, a wide bandgap semiconductor, as luminescence sensitizers for a range of rare-earth ions such as erbium (Er3+), europium (Eu3+), samarium (Sm3+), terbium (Tb3+), holmium (Ho3+), neodymium (Nd3+), and ytterbium (Yb3+) is provided. Photoluminescence measurements of various rare-earth-doped SnO2 thin films or nanoparticles, and SiO2–SnO2 glass-ceramic systems are presented to put in evidence the role of SnO2 nanocrystals as efficient REs sensitizers. Synthesis and fabrication methods to obtain the rare-earth activated SnO2-based photonic structures are also summarized.

The unique properties of the Eu3+ ion make it a powerful spectroscopic tool to investigate structure or follow processes and mechanisms in several high-tech application areas such as biology and health, structural engineering, environment monitoring systems and quantum technology, mainly concerning photonics. The traditional method is to exploit the unique photoluminescent properties of Eu3+ ions to understand complex dynamical processes and obtain information useful to develop materials with specific characteristics. The objective of this review is to focus on the use of Eu3+ optical spectroscopy in some condensed matter issues. After a short presentation of the more significant properties of the Eu3+ ion, some examples regarding its use as a probe of the local structure in sol–gel systems are presented. Another section is devoted to dynamical processes such as the important technological role of nanocrystals as rare-earth sensitizers. The appealing effect of the site-selection memory, observed when exciting different sites into the 5D1 state, which the 5D0 → 7F0 emission band reflects following the sites’ distribution, is also mentioned. Finally, a section is devoted to the use of Eu3+ in the development of a rare-earth-based platform for quantum technologies.

The present work extends the examination of selective laser melting (SLM)-fabricated 15-5 PH steel with the 8%-transient-austenite-phase towards fully-reversed strain-controlled low-cycle fatigue (LCF) test. The cyclic-deformation response and microstructural evolution were investigated via in-situ neutron-diffraction measurements. The transient-austenite-phase rapidly transformed into the martensite phase in the initial cyclic-hardening stage, followed by an almost complete martensitic transformation in the cyclic-softening and steady stage. The compressive stress was much greater than the tensile stress at the same strain amplitude. The enhanced martensitic transformation associated with lower dislocation densities under compression predominantly governed such a striking tension-compression asymmetry in the SLM-built 15-5 PH.

For different applications in laser photonics and integrated optics, photorefractive materials are surely of great interest and play an important role in miniaturization of devices and fabrication of functional photonic structures such as gratings and waveguides. In this work, high photorefractivity of sol-gel derived SiO2-SnO2:Er3+ glass-ceramic planar waveguides, with negative effective refractive index change, is demonstrated. Through the photorefractivity investigation employing the UV pulsed KrF excimer laser (λ = 248 nm), the glass-ceramic planar waveguides show fast photorefractive response after a cumulative dose of only 0.3 kJ/cm2. A higher SnO2 content in the glass-ceramics leads to a greater change of saturated effective refractive index: Δneff = - (2.60 ± 0.20) x 10-3 at 1550 nm on the TE0 mode, for the 30 mol% SnO2 planar waveguides and Δneff = - (2.00 ± 0.20) x 10-3 on the 1550 nm TE0 mode, for the 20 mol% SnO2 ones. To investigate the structural modifications involved in the photorefractivity of the SiO2-SnO2:Er3+ glass-ceramics, XRD and Raman characterizations are employed. The grating fabrication by direct UV writing on the SiO2-SnO2:Er3+ glass-ceramic planar waveguide as well as an important reduction in the employed energy is demonstrated.

Coaxial core/shell electrospun nanofibers consisting of ferroelectric P(VDF-TrFE) and relaxor ferroelectric P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE) are tailor-made with hierarchical structures to modulate their mechanical properties with respect to their constituents. Compared with two single and the other coaxial membranes prepared in the research, the core/shell-TrFE/CTFE membrane shows a more prominent mechanical anisotropy between revolving direction (RD) and cross direction (CD) associated with improved resistance to tensile stress for the crystallite phase stability and good strength-ductility balance. This is due to the better degree of core/shell-TrFE-CTFE nanofiber alignment and the crystalline/amorphous ratio. The coupling between terpolymer P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE) and copolymer P(VDF-TrFE) is responsible for phase stabilization, comparing the core/shell-TrFE/CTFE with the pristine terpolymer. Moreover, an impressive collective deformation mechanism of a two-length scale in the core/shell composite structure is found. We apply in-situ synchrotron X-ray to resolve the two-length scale simultaneously by using the small-angle X-ray scattering to characterize the nanofibers and the wide-angle X-ray diffraction to identify the phase transformations. Our findings may serve as guidelines for the fabrication of the electrospun nanofibers used as membranes-based electroactive polymers.

The coaxial core/shell composite electrospun nanofibers consisting of relaxor ferroelectric P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE) and ferroelectric P(VDF-TrFE) polymers are successfully tailored towards superior structural, mechanical, and electrical properties over the individual polymers. The core/shell-TrFE/CTFE membrane discloses a more prominent mechanical anisotropy between the revolving direction (RD) and cross direction (CD) associated with a higher tensile modulus of 26.9 MPa and good strength-ductility balance, beneficial from a better degree of nanofiber alignment, the increased density, and C-F bonding. The interfacial coupling between the terpolymer P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE) and copolymer P(VDF-TrFE) is responsible for comparable full-frequency dielectric responses between the core/shell-TrFE/CTFE and pristine terpolymer. Moreover, an impressive piezoelectric coefficient up to 50.5 pm/V is achieved in the core/shell-TrFE/CTFE composite structure. Our findings corroborate the promising approach of coaxial electrospinning in efficiently tuning mechanical and electrical performances of the electrospun core/shell composite nanofiber membranes-based electroactive polymers (EAPs) actuators as artificial muscle implants.

Looking for upconverting biocompatible nanoparticles, we have prepared by the sol–gel method, silica–calcia glass nanopowders doped with different concentration of Tm3+ and Yb3+ ions (Tm3+ from 0.15 mol% up to 0.5 mol% and Yb3+ from 1 mol% up to 4 mol%) and characterized their structure, morphology, and optical properties. X-ray diffraction patterns indicated an amorphous phase of the silica-based glass with partial crystallization of samples with a higher content of lanthanides ions. Transmission electron microscopy images showed that the average size of particles decreased with increasing lanthanides content. The upconversion (UC) emission spectra and fluorescence lifetimes were registered under near infrared excitation (980 nm) at room temperature to study the energy transfer between Yb3+ and Tm3+ at various active ions concentrations. Characteristic emission bands of Tm3+ ions in the range of 350 nm to 850 nm were observed. To understand the mechanism of Yb3+–Tm3+ UC energy transfer in the SiO2–CaO powders, the kinetics of luminescence decays were studied.

A N95 face-piece respirator and a 3M air filter composed of non-woven polypropylene filter material were investigated for their multi-scale microstructure and resulting filtration performance. Filtration mechanisms of each system are found and quantified. Both media showed a gradually decrease of the most penetrating particle size with respect to an increase in face velocity or surface charge density. Increasing the face velocity and porosity dramatically degraded the collection efficiency in the 3M filter rather than in the N95 system. We exploited three-dimensional X-ray tomography to characterize the morphological and geometrical properties of the fiber arrangement and deposition of aerosol on the fiber surface. Tuning the most predominant material parameters to achieve a precedence in lower pressure drop or higher collection efficiency in a specifically captured particle size range is of great requisite to a peculiar application of the filter media.

Unalloyed nickel aluminide has important applications but lacks ductility at room temperature. In this study, iron-added nickel aluminide alloys exhibit plasticity enhancement. The nickel aluminide alloys are prepared with different iron contents (0, 0.25, and 1 at%) to study their plasticity. The indentation-induced deformed areas are mapped by the synchrotron X-ray diffraction to compare their plastic zones. A complimentary tight binding calculation and generalized embedded atom method demonstrate how the Fe-addition enhances the plasticity of the iron-added nickel aluminide alloys.

Skin defects of the total nasal columella can significantly impact both nasal respiratory function and aesthetics. The reconstruction of total columella is a complex process and represents a significant challenge for plastic surgeons. Various factors can cause the loss of the columella. Numerous columella reconstruction procedures have been proposed, each with their own set of advantages and disadvantages. The main issues to address include the need for regional flaps from the forehead or nasofacial sulcus, a long pedicle to reach the columella, and the double angular folding that causes a risk of malnutrition or venous congestion. Additionally, using horizontal nasolabial flaps may lead to deformation of the upper lip.

Abstract Diabetes mellitus remains a major global health issue, and great attention is directed at natural therapeutics. This systematic review aimed to assess the potential of flavonoids as antidiabetic agents by investigating their inhibitory effects on α-glucosidase and α-amylase, two key enzymes involved in starch digestion. Six scientific databases (PubMed, Virtual Health Library, EMBASE, SCOPUS, Web of Science, and WHO Global Index Medicus) were searched until August 21, 2022, for in vitro studies reporting IC50 values of purified flavonoids on α-amylase and α-glucosidase, along with corresponding data for acarbose as a positive control. A total of 339 eligible articles were analyzed, resulting in the retrieval of 1643 flavonoid structures. These structures were rigorously standardized and curated, yielding 974 unique compounds, among which 177 flavonoids exhibited inhibition of both α-glucosidase and α-amylase are presented. Quality assessment utilizing a modified CONSORT checklist and structure–activity relationship (SAR) analysis were performed, revealing crucial features for the simultaneous inhibition of flavonoids against both enzymes. Moreover, the review also addressed several limitations in the current research landscape and proposed potential solutions. This paper develops a finite element method for double beams subjected to static loading. The double beam consists of two Euler–Bernoulli beams connected continuously by an elastic spring connection. The finite element for a double beam is formulated with eight degrees of freedom based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. The finite element method is implemented in MATLAB software to analyze the behavior of the double beams. The MATLAB code calculates the displacements of both the upper and lower beams. Numerical examples are compared with the analytical solution to demonstrate the high accuracy of the proposed method.

Background: Medication adherence in asthmatic patients enhances the effectiveness of treatments, but some studies in low and middle-income countries still show some limitations. Our study aimed to determine if pharmacist-led interventions could increase medication adherence, improve treatment effectiveness, and relieve symptom severity in outpatients with asthma. Methods: We conducted a randomized, controlled trial on 247 asthmatic outpatients (aged ≥ 16) with a 1:1 ratio randomization at the hospitalization time and repeated after 1-month discharge. The primary outcome was to detect the difference in medication adherence between groups. Adherence was assessed by the general medication adherence scale (GMAS). Data collected by questionnaire was coded and entered into SPSS_20 for statistical analysis; Results: 247 patients (123 intervention, 124 control) were enrolled (61.1% male). After intervention, the adherence rate was higher among the intervention group than the control group (94.3% vs. 82.8%, p = 0.001). Patient behavior and knowledge were enhanced in the intervention group (p < 0.05). Asthma symptoms were relieved in the intervention group (p = 0.014). Pharmacist-led interventions on adherence rate were higher with OR: 3.550, 95% CI: 1.378–9.143, p = 0.009. Conclusions: pharmaceutical intervention could improve medication adherence, treatment efficacy, and the outcome should not be taken for granted; further research should be carried out in this regard.

Background: Facial nerve palsy is one of the most common complications in parotid gland surgery. This report evaluates the effectiveness of applying Tumescent solution for preserving the facial nerve in parotidectomy. Material and methods: Prospective and descriptive clinical study on 34 patients undergoing parotidectomy with facial nerve preservation. Before skin incision, 5–10 min, we injected 100–200 ml of the Tumescent solution into the surgical area. We recorded the surgical method, tumor size, length of surgery, pathological results and facial nerve dysfunction. All patients were followed for a period ranging from 6 to 24 months. Results: There were 14 patients with malignant tumors and 20 patients with benign tumors. The length of surgery lasted from 90 to 180 min, with an average of 126.8 min. The number of patients having temporary facial paralysis was 22 cases (64.7%), recovery time ranged from 1 week to 6 months, and no permanent facial paralysis cases were recorded. The clinical occurrence of Frey's syndrome was five cases (14.7%). Conclusions: The application of Tumescent solution for preserving facial nerves in parotidectomy could minimize nerve injury and shorten the length of surgery.

Aims To determine the effectiveness of a mobile application (app) in improving the quality of bowel preparation for colonoscopy.Method An endoscopist-blinded randomised controlled trial enrolled patients who were undergoing a colonoscopy on the same day of bowel preparation. The intervention used a Vietnamese mobile app that provides instructions on bowel preparation while patients in the comparison group received conventional instructions. Outcomes included the Boston Bowel Preparation Scale (BBPS) to assess the quality of bowel preparation and the polyp detection rate (PDR) and adenoma detection rate (ADR).Results The study recruited 515 patients (256 in the intervention group). The median age was 42 years, 50.9% were females, 69.1% high school graduates and higher, and 45.2% from urban area. Patients in the intervention group had higher adherence to instructions (60.9% vs 52.4%, p=0.05) and longer length of taking laxatives (mean difference 0.17 hours, 95% CI 0.06 to 0.27). We present the results of the spectral transmittance and reflectance of a SiO2/TiO2 1D photonic crystal deposited by Radio Frequency sputtering on a flexible polymeric substrate, which shows a blue-shift in its transmittance stopband proportional to the incidence angle when bent. An adjustable sample holder was designed to regulate the bending and keep the sample in a bent condition. Different angles of incidence were also achieved through variable angle reflectance, where an increase in incidence angle led to the blue-shift and narrowing of the transmittance stopband. We addressed the sample's resistance against bending wear and tear by comparing the transmittance spectra acquired for the flat sample before and after the measurements made in bent configurations. An important stability has been observed.

The Z-Scan technique is an easy and widespread approach to evaluate the nonlinear optical coefficient of materials. However, the evaluation of the same coefficients for thin films requires complex experimental setups that allow to remove the contributions of the substrate. Here, we propose a simple, yet effective, theoretical approach that allows to include the substrate contribution to the focusing effect when scanning along the propagation axis. The proposed method therefore removes the need of complex experimental setups and paves the way for a simpler retrieval of optical properties of complex nanostructures.

This empirical study aims to identify and evaluate the crucial factors that influence customer satisfaction and their intention to reuse a food ordering app (FOA) in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), Vietnam. A data sample of 413 observations from customers who used the FOA was used to test hypotheses using a quantitative technique and a structural linear model. The results indicated that among the four key factors, performance expectancy, price value, and online reviews had direct and indirect effects on customers’ continued intention to use the FOA. By contrast, hedonic motivation only had an indirect effect. Satisfaction level was the mediating factor that affected customers’ continuance intention. This study provided insights into the online service and how the key factors affected customers’ satisfaction level towards the intention to reuse the FOA. When the management of the online providing service improves the key factors – performance expectancy, hedonic motivation, price value, and online reviews – they will improve the level of satisfaction towards the intention to reuse the FOA of customers in HCMC. The management of food companies should refer to this research model for restructuring and improving their business to satisfy the needs and wants of their target customers in the competitive market.

Ettringite binder is widely used in mortars for technical applications such as patching mortars, self-leveling screeds, repair mortars thanks to their fast hardening ability and high early strength. However, depending on the amount and types of raw materials used in the composition, the properties of these types of binder have different behaviors at early-age and at long term. In this work, the influence of the nature and dosage of calcium sulfate in ettringite binder on the long-term strength of mortar in different curing conditions was determined. The results showed that the increase of calcium sulfate content in ettringite binder from 10–25 % improves the strength of mortars regardless of the calcium sulfate nature. In all curing conditions (endogenous, drying, outdoor), the strength of ettringite mortars with anhydrite is smaller than that of mortars containing hemihydrate. There is no major difference in the porosity of the mortars in different types of curing conditions before 28 days. However, after 28 days the porosity of mortar in drying condition is about 2–3 % higher than that of the mortars in endogenous and outdoor conditions.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by SARS-CoV-2, has become one of the most serious public health crises worldwide. Most infected people are asymptomatic but are still able to spread the virus. People with mild or moderate illnesses are likely to recover without hospitalization, while critically ill patients face a higher risk of organ injury or even death. In this study, we aimed to identify a novel biomarker that can predict the severity of COVID-19 patients. Clinical information and RNA-seq data of leukocytes from whole blood samples with and without a COVID-19 diagnosis (n = 100 and 26, respectively) were retrieved from the National Center for Biotechnology Information Gene Expression Omnibus database. Raw data were processed using the Transcripts Per Million (TPM) method and then transformed using log2 (TPM+1) for normalization. The CD24-CSF1R index was established. Violin plots, Kaplan-Meier curves, ROC curves, and multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression analyses were performed to evaluate the prognostic value of the established index. The CD24-CSF1R index was significantly associated with ICU admission (n = 50 ICU, 50 non-ICU) and ventilatory status (n = 42 ventilation, 58 non-ventilation) with p = 4.186e-11 and p = 1.278e-07, respectively. The ROC curve produced a relatively accurate prediction of ICU admission with an AUC of 0.8524. Additionally, patients with a high index had significantly fewer mechanical ventilation-free days than patients with a low index (p = 6.07e−07). The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) enables the integration of physical devices such as sensors and actuators into the virtual world of automation application systems via different communication protocols. Interoperability among the “things” appears to be one of the biggest conceptual and technological challenges in developing the IIoT framework. Typically, collaboration at the field device level is very limited. Instead, the decision-making process is usually propagated to higher levels with substantial computational resources. This centralized architecture has been widely deployed based on global cloud infrastructure. However, sending data over the cloud for analysis may bring about privacy and security threats. Besides, network latency could be another factor that reduces adaptability. In this article, we propose a decentralized approach that applies the concepts of local automation cloud. By using semantic technologies to achieve autonomicity, the approach enables real-time monitoring of the control systems within one local cloud and automates orchestration and configuration locally through adaptation based on semantic policies. The approach is deployed and tested on a chemical production use case in which business-level policies have been used for dynamical planning for suppliers and automatic detection of malfunctioning sensors with subsequent adaptation to continuing supply planning and production as smooth as possible.

Recent advancements in high-entropy alloys (HEAs) and high-entropy materials (HEMs) show promising potential for different fields of applications. The emergence of HEAs and HEMs has gained significant interest for their exciting nature and properties. As they consist of five or more elements in considerable amounts, properties vary depending on the synergistic effect of combinations of elements. By selecting proper elements and manufacturing methods, better properties can be tuned. Although many unique behaviors of HEAs and HEMs are reported due to their mixing entropy, sluggish diffusion, severe lattice distortion, and multi-metallic cocktail effects, it is necessary to summarize the data to map their feasibility and potential. For example, the combined properties of high thermal stability, thermal fatigue, creep resistance, higher stiffness, and better corrosion resistance for elevated-temperature environments in aerospace applications are pursued. Moreover, gaining the environmental compatibility and longevity of service-life-oxidation behavior of these materials is one of the crucial aspects and, hence, has been recently explored. Therefore, this Research Update aims at summarizing the recent developments and findings in oxidation behavior and highlighting the challenges and controversies for future research perspectives, particularly, on the sustainability for different applications. Moreover, besides the bulk structure, the performance of the HEAs/HEMs coatings is also reviewed.

The role of residual stress is critical, particularly for machine tools demanding accuracy below 1 µm. Although minor stresses are subjected to a tiny area, the applied force can cause devastating distortions on the precision components at this length scale. In this research, we systematically investigated the residual stress in a stress frame of the gray iron used in machine tools using synchrotron X-ray and neutron sources. Through the combination of these techniques, the residual stresses on the surface, inside the bulk, and in average were presented. Comprehensive analysis results shed light on the vibratory stress relief technique, which reduced the residual stresses and stabilized them, even materials undergoing cycling heating. Although compressive stresses are not effectively reduced, this technique is useful in improving the mechanical stability of the materials in machine tools.

Oxyfluoride glass-ceramics (OxGCs) with the molar composition 80SiO2-20(1.5Eu3+: NaGdF4) were prepared with sol-gel following the “pre-crystallised nanoparticles route” with promising optical results. The preparation of 1.5 mol % Eu3+-doped NaGdF4 nanoparticles, named 1.5Eu3+: NaGdF4, was optimised and characterised using XRD, FTIR and HRTEM. The structural characterisation of 80SiO2-20(1.5Eu3+: NaGdF4) OxGCs prepared from these nanoparticles’ suspension was performed by XRD and FTIR revealing the presence of hexagonal and orthorhombic NaGdF4 crystalline phases. The optical properties of both nanoparticles’ phases and the related OxGCs were studied by measuring the emission and excitation spectra together with the lifetimes of the 5D0 state. The emission spectra obtained by exciting the Eu3+-O2− charge transfer band showed similar features in both cases corresponding the higher emission intensity to the 5D0→7F2 transition that indicates a non-centrosymmetric site for Eu3+ ions. Moreover, time-resolved fluorescence line-narrowed emission spectra were performed at a low temperature in OxGCs to obtain information about the site symmetry of Eu3+ in this matrix. The results show that this processing method is promising for preparing transparent OxGCs coatings for photonic applications.

In this review, we present a short overview of the development of sol–gel glasses for application in the field of photonics, with a focus on some of the most interesting results obtained by our group and collaborators in that area. Our main attention is devoted to silicate glasses of different compositions, which are characterized by specific optical and spectroscopic properties for various applications, ranging from luminescent systems to light-confining structures and memristors. In particular, the roles of rare-earth doping, matrix composition, the densification process and the fabrication protocol on the structural, optical and spectroscopic properties of the developed photonic systems are discussed through appropriate examples. Some achievements in the fabrication of oxide sol–gel optical waveguides and of micro- and nanostructures for the confinement of light are also briefly discussed.

Flexible glass photonics is a cutting-edge technological and scientific research field that, thanks to a very broad spectrum of applications, has tremendously grown during the last decade and is now a strategic topic. Here, we present the results of the spectral transmittance and reflectance of a 10-layer SiO2/TiO2 1D photonic crystal deposited on a flexible polymeric substrate under different bending conditions, obtained with a home-made adjustable sample holder.

To minimize the stress shielding effect of metallic biomaterials in mimicking bone, the body-centered cubic (bcc) unit cell-based porous CoCrMo alloys with different, designed volume porosities of 20, 40, 60, and 80% were produced via a selective laser melting (SLM) process. A heat treatment process consisting of solution annealing and aging was applied to increase the volume fraction of an ε-hexagonal close-packed (hcp) structure for better mechanical response and stability. In the present study, we investigated the impact of different, designed volume porosities on the compressive mechanical properties in as-built and heat-treated CoCrMo alloys. The elastic modulus and yield strength in both conditions were dramatically decreased with increasing designed volume porosity. The elastic modulus and yield strength of the CoCrMo alloys with a designed volume porosity of 80% exhibited the closest match to those of bone tissue. Different strengthening mechanisms were quantified to determine their contributing roles to the measured yield strength in both conditions. The experimental results of the relative elastic modulus and yield strength were compared to the analytical and simulation modeling analyses. The Gibson–Ashby theoretical model was established to predict the deformation behaviors of the lattice CoCrMo structures.

In this research, we systematically investigated equiatomic CoCrFeNi and CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloys (HEAs). Both of these HEA systems are single-phase, face-centered-cubic (FCC) structures. Specifically, we examined the tensile response in as-cast quaternary CoCrFeNi and quinary CoCrFeMnNi HEAs at room temperature. Compared to CoCrFeNi HEA, the elongation of CoCrFeMnNi HEA was 14% lower, but the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength were increased by 17% and 6%, respectively. The direct real-time evolution of structural defects during uniaxial straining was acquired via in situ neutron-diffraction measurements. The dominant microstructures underlying plastic deformation mechanisms at each deformation stage in as-cast CoCrFeNi and CoCrFeMnNi HEAs were revealed using the Convolutional Multiple Whole Profile (CMWP) software for peak-profile fitting. The possible mechanisms are reported.

An equal-molar CoCrFeMnNi, face-centered-cubic (fcc) high-entropy alloy (HEA) and a nickel-based superalloy are studied using in situ neutron diffraction experiments. With continuous measurements, the evolution of diffraction peaks is collected for microscopic lattice strain analyses. Cyclic hardening and softening are found in both metallic systems. However, as obtained from the diffraction-peak-width evolution, the underneath deformation mechanisms are quite different. The CoCrFeMnNi HEA exhibits distinct lattice strain and microstructure responses under tension-compression cyclic loadings.

Nitrogen-doped TiO2 nanotube arrays (N-TNAs) were successfully fabricated by a simple thermal annealing process in ambient N2 gas at 450 °C for 3 h. TNAs with modified morphologies were prepared by a two-step anodization using an aqueous NH4F/ethylene glycol solution. The N-doping concentration (0–9.47 at %) can be varied by controlling N2 gas flow rates between 0 and 500 cc/min during the annealing process. Photocatalytic performance of as-prepared TNAs and N-TNAs was studied by monitoring the methylene blue degradation under visible light (λ ≥ 400 nm) illumination at 120 mW·cm−2. N-TNAs exhibited appreciably enhanced photocatalytic activity as compared to TNAs. The reaction rate constant for N-TNAs (9.47 at % N) reached 0.26 h−1, which was a 125% improvement over that of TNAs (0.115 h−1). The significant enhanced photocatalytic activity of N-TNAs over TNAs is attributed to the synergistic effects of (1) a reduced band gap associated with the introduction of N-doping states to serve as carrier reservoir, and (2) a reduced electron‒hole recombination rate.

Glass photonics are widespread, from everyday objects around us to high-tech specialized devices. Among different technologies, sol–gel synthesis allows for nanoscale materials engineering by exploiting its unique structures, such as transparent glass-ceramics, to tailor optical and electromagnetic properties and to boost photon-management yield. Here, we briefly discuss the state of the technology and show that the choice of the sol–gel as a synthesis method brings the advantage of process versatility regarding materials composition and ease of implementation. In this context, we present tin-dioxide–silica (SnO2–SiO2) glass-ceramic waveguides activated by europium ions (Eu3+). The focus is on the photorefractive properties of this system because its photoluminescence properties have already been discussed in the papers presented in the bibliography. The main findings include the high photosensitivity of sol–gel 25SnO2:75SiO2 glass-ceramic waveguides; the ultraviolet (UV)-induced refractive index change (Δn ~ −1.6 × 10−3), the easy fabrication process, and the low propagation losses (0.5 ± 0.2 dB/cm), that make this glass-ceramic an interesting photonic material for smart optical applications.
