Arctic permafrost is degrading and is thus releasing nutrients, solutes, sediment and water into soils and freshwater ecosystems. The impacts of this degradation depends on the geochemical characteristics and in large part on the spatial distribution of ground ice and solutes, which is not well-known in the High Arctic polar desert ecosystems. This research links ground ice and solute concentrations, to establish a framework for identifying locations vulnerable to permafrost degradation. It builds on landscape classifications and cryostratigraphic interpretations of permafrost history. Debris-covered glaciers are an important component of the mountain cryosphere and influence the hydrological contribution of glacierized basins to downstream rivers. This study examines the potential to make estimates of debris thickness, a critical variable to calculate the sub-debris melt, using ground-based thermal infrared radiometry (TIR) images. Over four days in August 2019, a ground-based, time-lapse TIR digital imaging radiometer recorded sequential thermal imagery of a debris-covered region of Peyto Glacier, Canadian Rockies, in conjunction with 44 manual excavations of debris thickness ranging from 10 to 110 cm, and concurrent meteorological observations. Inferring the correlation between measured debris thickness and TIR surface temperature as a base, the effectiveness of linear and exponential regression models for debris thickness estimation from surface temperature was explored. Optimal model performance (R2 of 0.7, RMSE of 10.3 cm) was obtained with a linear model applied to measurements taken on clear nights just before sunrise, but strong model performances were also obtained under complete cloud cover during daytime or nighttime with an exponential model. This work presents insights into the use of surface temperature and TIR observations to estimate debris thickness and gain knowledge of the state of debris-covered glacial ice and its potential hydrological contribution.

The source of greenhouse gases in the subsurface horizon of soil can be both deep deposits of hydrocarbons and organic matter processed by microorganisms during the thawing of the ice-rich soil. To determine the source of the gas it is necessary to examine both its quantity and composition and the microorganism content in the subsurface ice. Taking into account the dynamic development of the energy complex in the north of Western Siberia it is necessary to take into account the geotechnical risks associated with the release of greenhouse gases from frozen deposits. Purpose: to study the composition and identify the sources of greenhouse gases in the ice and the ice-rich soil on account of the ice formation conditions and the microorganism content. Objects: ice wedge, hydrogenic and segregational genesis of ice, ice-rich soil of northern Western Siberia and Central Yakutia, collected by expeditions Earth Cryosphere Institute, Tyumen scientific center SB RAS in 2011–2021. Methods of research and interpretation of chemical composition. The structure of frozen deposits has been investigated by cryolitological methods. The monoliths of the ice and the frozen deposits were stored at –18 °C. Gas was extracted from the monoliths with the determination of volume fraction by thermovacuum degassing method. The composition of gases is determined by gas chromatography. Normalization of the gas composition with solubility values in water was carried out. Volume fractions of gas in free and dissolved forms was calculated. The data processing were implemented by means of «Geochem Anomaly» program. Cultivated psychrophilic microorganisms were studied by seeding on nutrient media; the total number of microorganisms was determined by epifluorescent microscopy. Results. The contents of N2 (74,9–87,8 %), O2 (11,7–20,3 %), CO2 (0,01–3,28 %), CH4 (0,003–7, 35 %), H2 (0,001–0,035 %) and hydrocarbons with an atom content from 2 to 6 (2,0×10–5–2,8×10–3 %) are determined in ice and ice-rich soil. The value of N2 and O2 in the gas composition of ice is close to atmospheric air. The ice has wide variations in gas saturation (1,1–21,1 %), CH4 and CO2 content. The freezing of gas-saturated solution occurred for the ice formation, part of the air was in a free form (from 30 to 75 %). Calculated indexes CH4/(C2H6+C3H8) and C2H6/C2H4 indicate biogenic hydrocarbon genesis. The composition of gas bubbles is recalculated for the volume of the entire sample: CH4 content is insignificant in ice wedge, closed-cavity ice and icing (averages 51, 81 and 1 ppmV, respectively). The low amounts of CH4 could be produced by forming these types of ice from the sediments of the active layer, as the dependence of the gas composition on the peat element amount is established. CH4, CO2 and H2 contents increased in samples with peat elements. In interbedding ice the CH4 content is high (216 ppmV). CO2 (up to 3007 ppmV) was accumulated in the texturing ice, and hydrogenic wedge-shaped ice showed high levels of CH4 (up to 4032 ppmV) as the ice was frozen in an enclosed volume. The ice of peat mound has a maximum content of CH4 (15545 ppmV) and high CO2 (2466 ppmV); inclosing sediments flooded with marginal-marine waters are the source of high values of CH4 and CO2. The cultivated psychrophilic microorganisms were identified in the surface ice, and their maximum quantities were identified in segregated formations – up to 1680 KOU/ml, in textural ice – up to 1032 KOU/ml. High concentrations of greenhouse gases are found in frozen peat – CO2 (1075 ppmV), H2 (9 ppmV), CH4 (262 ppmV) and other hydrocarbons due to activity of microorganisms, which results in accumulation of these gases. High gas saturation and CH4 and CO2 levels indicate the formation of gaseous composition by both aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms.

Climate-induced changes contribute to the thawing of ice-rich permafrost in the Arctic, which leads to the release of large amounts of organic carbon into the atmosphere in the form of greenhouse gases, mainly carbon dioxide and methane. Ground ice constitutes a considerable volume of the cryogenically sequestered labile dissolved organic carbon (DOC) subjected to fast mineralization upon thawing. In this work, we collected a unique geochemical database of the ground and glacier ice comprising the samples from various geographic locations in the Russian Arctic characterized by a variety of key parameters, including ion composition, carbon-bearing gases (methane and carbon dioxide), bulk biogeochemical indicators, and fluorescent dissolved organic matter (DOM) fractions. Our results show that interaction with solid material—such as sediments, detritus, and vegetation—is likely the overriding process in enrichment of the ground ice in all the dissolved compounds. Terrigenous humic-like dissolved organic matter was predominant in all the analyzed ice samples except for glacier ice from Bolshevik Island (the Severnaya Zemlya archipelago) and pure (with low sediment content) tabular ground ice from western Yamal. The labile protein-like DOM showed no correlation to humic components and was probably linked to microbial abundance in the ground ice. The sum of the fluorophores deconvoluted by PARAFAC strongly correlates to DOC, which proves the potential of using this approach for differentiation of bulk DOC into fractions with various origins and biogeochemical behaviors. The pure tabular ground ice samples exhibit the highest rate of fresh easily degradable DOM in the bulk DOC, which may be responsible for the amplification of permafrost organic matter decomposition upon thawing.

We studied processes of ice-wedge degradation and stabilization at three sites adjacent to road infrastructure in the Prudhoe Bay Oilfield, Alaska, USA. We examined climatic, environmental, and subsurface conditions and evaluated vulnerability of ice wedges to thermokarst in undisturbed and road-affected areas. Vulnerability of ice wedges strongly depends on the structure and thickness of soil layers above ice wedges, including the active, transient, and intermediate layers. In comparison with the undisturbed area, sites adjacent to the roads had smaller average thicknesses of the protective intermediate layer (4 cm vs. 9 cm), and this layer was absent above almost 60% of ice wedges (vs. ∼45% in undisturbed areas). Despite the strong influence of infrastructure, ice-wedge degradation is a reversible process. Deepening of troughs during ice-wedge degradation leads to a substantial increase in mean annual ground temperatures but not in thaw depths. Thus, stabilization of ice wedges in the areas of cold continuous permafrost can occur despite accumulation of snow and water in the troughs. Although thermokarst is usually more severe in flooded areas, higher plant productivity, more litter, and mineral material (including road dust) accumulating in the troughs contribute to formation of the intermediate layer, which protects ice wedges from further melting.

Permafrost areas are sensitive to climate change and have a significant impact on energy and water cycles. Ground ice is a crucial component on the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau (QTP). Understanding the environmental characteristics of ground ice is vital for accurately modeling its distribution and evolution. In this study, we analyzed 15 environmental characteristics of high ice-content permafrost sites. These attributes were extracted from 400 high ice-content permafrost datasets including 300 drilling boreholes and 100 thaw slumps collected throughout the entire plateau using large-scale remote sensing data and their products. The results are as follows: The mean annual air temperature in areas where high ice-content permafrost exists ranges from −5 to −3.5 °C, with an average warming rate of 0.08 °C/a. Additionally, there was an average increase in precipitation of about 25 mm/10a and an increase in soil moisture of about 4%/10a. Geomorphology strongly influences the occurrence of high ice content permafrost, with 85% of high ice-content permafrost development at altitudes between 4400 and 5100 m. Approximately 86% of high ice-content permafrost were developed in lowland or relatively flat areas, preferably in gently sloping and shady slope regions. Soils exhibit less variability in clay particles and more variability in silt and sand. Key indicators in the high ice content permafrost region include warming rate, active layer thickness, elevation, bulk density, soil thickness, clay content, precipitation, soil moisture, and NDVI. High ice-content permafrost is the result of a combination of environmental factors and is expected to undergo significant changes in the future. This study provides a foundation for comprehending the environmental changes in the high ice-content permafrost areas and modeling the distribution of ground ice. It underscores the urgent need to address the significant environmental changes faced by high ice-content permafrost regions.

Ground ice in permafrost stores substantial amounts of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) upon thaw, which may perpetuate a carbon feedback in permafrost regions, yet little is known to date about the dynamics of DOC and source variability of ground ice on the Tibetan Plateau. Here, the high-resolution data of DOC in ground ice (4.8 m in depth) from two permafrost profiles on the Northeastern Tibetan Plateau (NETP) were firstly presented. We quantified the DOC concentrations (mean: 9.7–21.5 mg/L) of ground ice and revealed sizeable—by a factor of 7.0–36.0—enrichment of the ground ice relative to the other water elements on the TP. Results indicated remarkable depth differences in the DOC of ground ice, suggestive of diverse sources of DOC and different sequestration processes of DOC into ice during permafrost evolution. Combined with DOC and carbon isotopes (δ13CDOC), we clarified that decomposition of soil organic matter and leaching of DOC from organic layers and surrounding permafrost sediments are the important carbon sources of ground ice. The DOC sequestration of ground ice in the upper layers was related to the active layer hydrology and freeze–thaw cycle. However, the permafrost evolution controlled the decomposition of organic carbon and sequestration of DOC in the deep layers. A conceptual model clearly illustrated the dynamics of DOC in ground ice and suggested a significant impact on the carbon cycle on the NETP. The first attempt to explore the DOC in ground ice on the NETP is important and effective for further understanding of carbon cycle under permafrost degradation on the Tibetan Plateau.

Understanding paleoenvironmental conditions of the permafrost formation allows us to estimate the permafrost carbon pool and its behavior upon thawing in a changing climate. In order to classify different types of ground ice and to reconstruct paleoenvironments, we examined geochemical data of ice wedges (IWs), tabular ground ice (TGI), and lens ice from the eastern coast of the Faddeevsky Peninsula (East Siberian Arctic). We analyzed isotope and ion composition, molecular composition of the gas phase, bulk biogeochemical parameters and dissolved organic matter (DOM) composition in ground ice samples. IWs formed in the Late Pleistocene under the coldest winter conditions and in the Holocene in proximity to the sea. The Holocene IWs have the highest mean d-excess (11–13‰) and a heavier isotope composition by an average of 6‰ compared with the Late Pleistocene IWs. We observe predominance of sea-salt fractions in ion composition of the Holocene IWs, while the Late Pleistocene IW shows enrichment in non-sea-salt component of SO42− (nssSO42−), which is probably associated with mineral leaching of deposits. Higher dissolved organic carbon (DOC) content in the Late Pleistocene IW (to 17.7 mg/L) may indicate more favorable vegetation conditions or lower degree of organic matter mineralization compared to Holocene IWs and TGI. CH4 concentrations were relatively low with a maximum value of 2.27 μmol/L. DOM composition, supposed to record the paleoenvironment of the freezing process, was for the first time tried as a biomarker for paleoenvironmental reconstructions of ground ice formation. Parallel factor (PARAFAC) analysis of EEM (Excitation-Emission matrix) of fluorescent DOM decomposes four components: P1–P3, which are related to allochthonous humic-like constituents, and P4, which is relevant to autochthonous fraction associated with microbial activity. The distribution of fluorescent DOM tracked the variability in both paleoclimate conditions of the IW formation (discriminating the Holocene and the Late Pleistocene IWs) and types of ground ice (IW and TGI), which demonstrates the potential of the used approach.

This article is devoted to the study of the distribution of ground ice volumes in the upper layers of 5–10 m permafrost in the permafrost landscapes of Arctic Yakutia. Compilation of such a map will serve as a basis for assessing the vulnerability of permafrost to global warming, anthropogenic impact and forecasting the evolution of permafrost landscapes. The map was compiled using ArcGIS software, which supports attribute table mapping. The ground ice map of Arctic Yakutian permafrost landscapes shows that about 19% of the area is occupied by ultra ice-rich (above 0.6 in volumetric ice content) sediments. Very high ice volumes (0.4–0.6) are cover approximately 27%, moderate ice volumes (0.2–0.4)—25% of the area, and low ice volumes (less than 0.2)—about 29% of Arctic Yakutia.

Martian chaos terrains are fractured depressions consisting of block landforms that are often located in source areas of outflow channels. Numerous chaos and chaos-like features have been found on Mars; however, a global-scale classification has not been pursued. Here, we perform recognition and classification of Martian chaos using imagery machine learning. We developed neural network models to classify block landforms commonly found in chaos terrains—which are associated with outflow channels formed by water activity (referred to as Aromatum-Hydraotes-Oxia-like (or AHO) chaos blocks) or with geological features suggesting volcanic activity (Arsinoes-Pyrrhae-like (or AP) chaos blocks)—and also non-chaos surface features, based on >1400 surface images. Our models can recognize chaos and non-chaos features with 93.9% ± 0.3% test accuracy, and they can be used to classify both AHO and AP chaos blocks with >89 ± 4% test accuracy. By applying our models to ~3150 images of block landforms of chaos-like features, we identified 2 types of chaos terrain. These include hybrid chaos terrain, where AHO and AP chaos blocks co-exist in one basin, and AHO-dominant chaos terrain. Hybrid chaos terrains are predominantly found in the circum-Chryse outflow channels region. AHO-dominant chaos terrains are widely distributed across Aeolis, Cydonia, and Nepenthes Mensae along the dichotomy boundary. Their locations coincide with regions suggested to exhibit upwelling groundwater on Hesperian Mars.

Alpine permafrost is currently warming, leading to changes such as active layer deepening and talik formation. Frequency domain electro-magnetometry (FDEM) measurements were tested as a simple and efficient method to investigate ground characteristics along two transects on the ice-rich Schafberg rock glacier in the Eastern Swiss Alps. The results were compared with electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and ground temperature data acquired simultaneously in boreholes. FDEM provides information on the electrical properties of the ground, allowing to investigate ground-ice distribution. Our device allowed measurements to a depth of around 7 m. In ice-rich permafrost, FDEM can provide an approximation of the active layer thickness, and ice-free zones within the permafrost such as intra-permafrost taliks can be identified. This rapidly applicable geophysical method can be used to monitor ground ice distribution easily and efficiently, making it an ideal complement to borehole temperature data, which only provide point information and are costly to install and maintain. At the Schafberg site the three methods FDEM, electrical resistivity tomography and borehole temperature measurements provided similar results, with regard to active layer thickness and the presence of unfrozen zones within the ice-rich permafrost.

Te authors examined the chemical composition of underground ice sampled from the frost mounds located in the loose (unconsolidated) sediments of the Sentsa River valley (Oka plateau, Eastern Sayan) with the purpose of reconstruction the formation history of these cryogenic creations. Numerous frost mounds of various sizes are mainly composed of alternating icy loams, sandy loams, and lenses of pure ice. Samples of underground ice taken in the outcrops of the river ledges and cores from wells together with samples of river and lake waters were analyzed by traditional hydrochemical techniques (methods) in the center "Geodynamics and geochronology" (Institute of the Earth's Crust of the Siberian branch of RAS, Irkutsk). It was found that the chemical composition of pure ice melts from lenses and layers of the frost mounds is hydrocarbonate calcium (HCO3 Ca, SO4-HCO3 Ca and NH4-HCO3 Ca) with mineralization of 6.5 – 15.6 mg/L, pH = 5.6÷6.1. Mineralization of melts of texture-forming ice, taken from icy ground (i.e. with fractions of enclosing loams) was much higher – from 50 to 792.5 mg/L. River and lake water is ultra-fresh with 99–132 mg/L salinity, and according to geochemical type it is hydrocarbonate calcium (HCO3 Ca). Te specifc features of chemical composition of the underground ice (high content of ammonium salts and sulfates) depend on a water-rock interaction, the presence of organic matter in the loose (unconsolidated) sediments and a repeated volcanic activity in the late Pleistocene–Holocene. Te frost mounds are confned to a lacustrine sediments area in the backwater zone that was formed by the Late Pleistocene terminal moraine. Teir formation in the Holocene took place as a result of segregational ice formation during freezing of water-saturated lake sediments, and, presumably, repeated injections of underground waters of the under-channel and floodplain aquifers hydraulically connected with river waters. Tus, the genesis of the studied frost mounds is probably a mixed segregation-injection process.

Summary Degradation of permafrost on the continental shelf and shores of the Arctic seas may be a main cause of the methane emission to the atmosphere from marine sediments. To quantify this effect it is necessary to have reliable data on the methane content in the underground ice and frozen Quaternary deposits. Samples of frozen (permafrost) sediments and ground ice, taken in three reference coastal sections made in the Mid- and Late Pleistocene coastal exposures and on the Kara sea shelf, were collected and studied. The samples were analyzed to determine composition, salinity, organic carbon content, and other characteristics of the underground ices. About 270 samples allowed determination of the gas composition and the methane concentration. The gas is present in the pores of the rocks and air bubbles in the ice. Gas was present in pores of sediments and in bubbles within the ice. It has been established that the composition of non-hydrocarbon gases in the underground ice does not correspond to the composition of the atmosphere in the time of formation of them. The methane content in the underground ice and frozen sediments is characterized by very high variability. The highest concentrations of methane are inherent in layers of the massive ground ice and reach up to 23000 ppm; the maximum concentration of methane in the massive vein ices does not exceed 900 ppm. High concentrations of methane in layers of the massive ice confirm their non-glacier formation. The highest, up to 6400 ppm, methane concentrations in permafrost sediments are characteristic for the Late Pleistocene marine clays, while in the Mid Pleistocene marine clays it does not exceed 1700 ppm. The isotopic composition of methane in frozen sediments and ground ice in both, the Cara Sea coast and shelf, is indicative of similar bacterial genesis of the gas. The total organic carbon content plays the limiting role in the methane production and its accumulation in the frozen sediments and ground ice.

In this study, we applied small baseline subset-interferometric synthetic aperture radar (SBAS-InSAR) to monitor the ground surface deformation from 2017 to 2020 in the permafrost region within an ~400 km × 230 km area covering the northern and southern slopes of Mt. Geladandong, Tanggula Mountains on the Tibetan Plateau. During SBAS-InSAR processing, we inverted the network of interferograms into a deformation time series using a weighted least square estimator without a preset deformation model. The deformation curves of various permafrost states in the Tanggula Mountain region were revealed in detail for the first time. The study region undergoes significant subsidence. Over the subsiding terrain, the average subsidence rate was 9.1 mm/a; 68.1% of its area had a subsidence rate between 5 and 20 mm/a, while just 0.7% of its area had a subsidence rate larger than 30 mm/a. The average peak-to-peak seasonal deformation was 19.7 mm. There is a weak positive relationship (~0.3) between seasonal amplitude (water storage in the active layer) and long-term deformation velocity (ground ice melting). By examining the deformation time series of subsiding terrain with different subsidence levels, we also found that thaw subsidence was not restricted to the summer and autumn thawing times but could last until the following winter, and in this circumstance, the winter uplift was greatly weakened. Two import indices for indicating permafrost deformation properties, i.e., long-term deformation trend and seasonal deformation magnitude, were extracted by direct calculation and model approximations of deformation time series and compared with each other. The comparisons showed that the long-term velocity by different calculations was highly consistent, but the intra-annual deformation magnitudes by the model approximations were larger than those of the intra-annual highest-lowest elevation difference. The findings improve the understanding of deformation properties in the degrading permafrost environment.

Gas-emission craters discovered in northern West Siberia may arise under a specific combination of shallow and deep-seated permafrost conditions. A formation model for such craters is suggested based on cryological and geological data from the Yamal Peninsula, where shallow permafrost encloses thick ground ice and lenses of intra- and subpermafrost saline cold water (cryopegs). Additionally, the permafrost in the area is highly saturated with gas and stores large accumulations of hydrocarbons that release gas-water fluids rising to the surface through faulted and fractured crusts. Gas emission craters in the Arctic can form in the presence of gas-filled cavities in ground ice caused by climate warming, rich sources of gas that can migrate and accumulate under pressure in the cavities, intrapermafrost gas-water fluids that circulate more rapidly in degrading permafrost, or weak permafrost caps over gas pools.

As a result of many years of the author’s studies of glaciers and ground ices, a great amount of factual material has been collected for a purpose to analyze a possibility of burying the glaciers in the permafrost zone and to esti‑ mate a time of their stay in such а condition. According to the author’s opinion, the Siberian glaciers were mainly the valley ones; ice sheets were never formed, and any existence of buried glaciers could not be real in the geo‑ logical time scale. However, some researchers still believe that in the Quaternary ice sheets occurred in the North of Siberia, and, in addition, they consider the local massive ice beddings as relics of these sheets. No clear expla‑ nation of the similar origin of such ice structures exists at the present time, so development and variety of this ice could be easier explained by the permafrost genesis. Basing on results of observations carried out in all glacier regions of Siberia, the author concludes that glaciers cannot exist in the form of buried ice for a long time. This is unrealistic even in the North‑East of Siberia, where the absolute minimum temperature is −67.8 °C, and the mean annual air temperature drops below −17 °C. The characteristic feature of the Siberia continental climate is short, but hot summer. In such a situation, the coarse fragmental morainic material, covering glaciers by the layer up to 3 m thick, cannot preserve the underlying ice from melting because the heat penetrates down with the air, liquid precipitation, and the melt water. When glaciers reduce, the dead ice, buried under a moraine, may be preserved in the coldest areas of Siberia for only 100–150 years. Therefore, despite the resemblance of the scarps of the ice bodies having the permafrost or glacial origin, consideration of them as relics of ancient glaciers would be wrong.

Repeated freeze–thaw cycles on slopes trigger sorting and solifluction mass movements, while subsequent displacement of material modifies the geomorphology of slopes as well as permafrost dynamics. This study focuses on the geomorphology and the cryostratigraphy of a polar desert stone-banked solifluction lobe with the objective to clarify the impact of slow mass movements on ground ice aggradation. The morphology of the solifluction lobe was characterized by peripheral ridges of coarse gravel, partially surrounding a depression filled with finer sediments saturated with water and covered by organics. Cryostratigraphic analysis demonstrated that the solifluction lobe’s formation led to the development of a syngenetic layer of permafrost with an ice content that varied according to the location in the lobe. The ice-rich cryofacies formed in the central depression of the lobe should act as a buffer to potential active layer deepening, slowing down its thawing, whereas the ice-poor cryofacies formed under the ridges is expected to thaw faster than the central depression under climate warming scenarios. Thawing of the ice-rich zone in the future will result in differential thaw subsidence between the ridges and the central depression of solifluction lobes, along with increased drainage through the ridges and subsequent changes in hydrology.

Permafrost thawing leads to mobilization of the vast carbon pool into modern biogeochemical cycling through the enhanced release of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and production of greenhouse gases (CO2 and CH4). In this work, we focus on the study of methane and DOM distribution and genesis in the ground ice samples of thermodenudational exposure in the Central Yamal (Russian Arctic). We propose that the liberation of the ice-trapped CH4 and generation of CO2 by DOM mineralization are the earliest factors of atmospheric greenhouse gases emission as a result of permafrost thawing. The observed enormously “light ” isotope signatures of methane (δ13C < −80‰, δD < −390‰) found in the tabular ground ice units significantly divergent in morphology and localization within the exposuremay be related to subzero (cryogenic) carbonate reduction a as significant factor of the local methane enrichment. DOM is mainly formed (>88%) by biochemically refractory humic acids. Distribution of the labile protein-like DOM reflects the specific features of carbon and nitrogen cycles in the tabular ground ice and ice wedge samples. Tabular ground ice units are shown to be a significant source of methane and high quality organic matter as well as dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN). Ice wedges express a high variation in DOM composition and lability.

Complex structure of the section across the cape Marre-Sale as well as different approaches to its study are the main reasons for continuation of discussion about the age and genesis of deposits and ground ice. New radiocarbon data complement the previously published information about the age characteristics of upper part of the section. It has been found that the upper strata ices having complex shape occur in layers of different age, while they were formed in the Holocene second half.

Localized groundwater outflow and layered freezing of them in forms of large ice clusters on the surface creates specific conditions for energy and mass exchange in the «atmosphere–soil–lithosphere» system. In winter, the soil temperature profile is essentially deformed due to heat emission by the aufeis layer of water at its freezing that forms a specific thermocline layer. Deformation of the temperature profile, gradually decreasing, moves down the cross-section and disappearing at the interface between frozen and thawed rocks. Magnitude and number of the temperature deviations from a «normal» state depends on the heat storage of the aufeis-forming waters and on the number of outflows at a given point. The thermocline formation changes conditions of freezing for underlying ground layers together with mechanism of ice saturation of them, and that results in formation of two-layer ice-ground complexes (IGC) which differ drastically from cryogenic features in adjacent parts of the valley. Analysis of genetic characteristics and relation of components of the surface and subsurface layers allowed identification of seven types of the aufeis IGC: massive-segregation, cement-basal, layered-segregation, basal-segregation, vacuum-filtration, pressureinjection, and fissure-vein. Yearly formation and destruction of aufeises and subsurface ices is accompanied by a sequence of particularly hazardous geodynamical phenomena, among which the most important are winter flooding of territories, layered freezing of water, ground heaving, thermokarst, and thermoerosion. Combination of these processes may cause a rapid (often unexpected) reconfiguration of channels of both surface and subsurface runoff, abrupt uplifts and subsidences of the surface, and decompaction and «shaking-up» of seasonally thawing and seasonally freezing rocks, which may create exceptionally unfavorable conditions for construction and operation of engineering structures. Aufeis plots of river valleys are the most «hot» points of the permafrost zone. A comprehensive study of them requires organization of several reference aufeis test areas located in different natural-climatic and geocryological zones. In addition to the natural-historical and methodological aspects, the future research program should include consideration of problems related to interaction between engineering structures and aufeis events and aufeis ice-ground complexes.

The presence of ground ice in Arctic soils exerts a major effect on permafrost hydrology and ecology, and factors prominently into geomorphic landform development. As most ground ice has accumulated in near-surface permafrost, it is sensitive to variations in atmospheric conditions. Typical and regionally widespread permafrost landforms such as pingos, ice-wedge polygons, and rock glaciers are closely tied to ground ice. However, under ongoing climate change, suitable environmental spaces for preserving landforms associated with ice-rich permafrost may be rapidly disappearing. We deploy a statistical ensemble approach to model, for the first time, the current and potential future environmental conditions of three typical permafrost landforms, pingos, ice-wedge polygons and rock glaciers across the Northern Hemisphere. We show that by midcentury, the landforms are projected to lose more than one-fifth of their suitable environments under a moderate climate scenario (RCP4.5) and on average around one-third under a very high baseline emission scenario (RCP8.5), even when projected new suitable areas for occurrence are considered. By 2061–2080, on average more than 50% of the recent suitable conditions can be lost (RCP8.5). In the case of pingos and ice-wedge polygons, geographical changes are mainly attributed to alterations in thawing-season precipitation and air temperatures. Rock glaciers show air temperature-induced regional changes in suitable conditions strongly constrained by topography and soil properties. The predicted losses could have important implications for Arctic hydrology, geo- and biodiversity, and to the global climate system through changes in biogeochemical cycles governed by the geomorphology of permafrost landscapes. Moreover, our projections provide insights into the circumpolar distribution of various ground ice types and help inventory permafrost landforms in unmapped regions.

This contribution explores the internal structure of very small debris-covered glacier systems located in permafrost environments and their current dynamical responses to short-term climatic variations. Three systems were investigated with electrical resistivity tomography and dGPS monitoring over a 3-year period. Five distinct sectors are highlighted in each system: firn and bare-ice glacier, debris-covered glacier, heavily debris-covered glacier of low activity, rock glacier and ice-free debris. Decimetric to metric movements, related to ice ablation, internal deformation and basal sliding affect the glacial zones, which are mainly active in summer. Conversely, surface lowering is close to zero (-0.04 m yr-1) in the rock glaciers. Here, a constant and slow internal deformation was observed (c. 0.2 m yr-1). Thus, these systems are affected by both direct and high magnitude responses and delayed and attenuated responses to climatic variations. This differential evolution appears mainly controlled by (1) the proportion of ice, debris and the presence of water in the ground, and (2) the thickness of the superficial debris layer.

Arctic winters have become increasingly warmer and rainier. Where permafrost prevails, winter rain (or rain-on-snow) is known to occasionally cause extensive ice layers at the snow/ground interface, i.e. ‘basal ice’ or ‘ground ice’, with potentially large ecological and socio-economic implications. However, an overall lack of field data has so far restricted our predictive understanding of the environmental conditions shaping spatiotemporal variation in basal ice. Here, we use time-series of spatially replicated snowpack measurements from coastal (Ny-Ålesund area; 2000–2017) and central Spitsbergen (Nordenskiöld Land; 2010–2017), Svalbard, to analyze spatiotemporal patterns in basal ice and how they are linked with topography, weather, snowpack and climate change. As expected, both the spatial occurrence and thickness of basal ice increased strongly with the annual amount of winter rain. This effect was modified by accumulated snowfall; a deeper snowpack restricts ice formation following a minor rain event, but enhances ice formation following heavy rain due to an increased contribution of snowmelt. Accordingly, inter-annual variation in snow depth was negatively related to basal ice thickness. Annual fluctuations in basal ice thickness were strongly correlated in space (average correlation ρ = 0.40; 0–142 km distance between plots) due to strong spatial correlation in winter rain ( ρ = 0.62; 14–410 km distance between meteorological stations). Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) systems, sensors, and photogrammetric processing techniques have enabled timely and highly detailed three-dimensional surface reconstructions at a scale that bridges the gap between conventional remote-sensing and field-scale observations. In this work 29 rotary and fixed-wing UAV surveys were conducted during multiple field campaigns, totaling 47 flights and over 14.3 km2, to document permafrost thaw subsidence impacts on or close to road infrastructure in the Northwest Territories, Canada. This paper provides four case studies: (1) terrain models and orthomosaic time series revealed the morphology and daily to annual dynamics of thaw-driven mass wasting phenomenon (retrogressive thaw slumps; RTS). Scar zone cut volume estimates ranged between 3.2 × 103 and 5.9 × 106 m3. The annual net erosion of RTS surveyed ranged between 0.35 × 103 and 0.39 × 106 m3. The largest RTS produced a long debris tongue with an estimated volume of 1.9 × 106 m3. Downslope transport of scar zone and embankment fill materials was visualized using flow vectors, while thermal imaging revealed areas of exposed ground ice and mobile lobes of saturated, thawed materials. (2) Stratigraphic models were developed for RTS headwalls, delineating ground-ice bodies and stratigraphic unconformities. (3) In poorly drained areas along road embankments, UAV surveys detected seasonal terrain uplift and settlement of up to 0.5 m (>1700 m2 in extent) as a result of injection ice development. (4) Time series of terrain models highlighted the thaw-driven evolution of a borrow pit (6.4 × 105 m3 cut volume) constructed in permafrost terrain, whereby fluvial and thaw-driven sediment transfer (1.1 and 3.9 × 103 m3 a−1 respectively) was observed and annual slope profile reconfiguration was monitored to gain management insights concerning site stabilization. Elevation model vertical accuracies were also assessed as part of the case studies and ranged between 0.02 and 0.13 m Root Mean Square Error. Photogrammetric models processed with Post-processed Kinematic image solutions achieved similar accuracies without ground control points over much larger and complex areas than previously reported. The high resolution of UAV surveys, and the capacity to derive quantitative time series provides novel insights into permafrost processes that are otherwise challenging to study. The timely emergence of these tools bridges field-based research and applied studies with broad-scale remote-sensing approaches during a period when climate change is transforming permafrost environments.

Permafrost degradation of coastal and marine sediments of the Arctic Seas can result in large amounts of methane emitted to the atmosphere. The quantitative assessment of such emissions requires data on variability of methane content in various types of permafrost strata. To evaluate the methane concentrations in sediments and ground ice of the Kara Sea coast, samples were collected at a series of coastal exposures. Methane concentrations were determined for more than 400 samples taken from frozen sediments, ground ice and active layer. In frozen sediments, methane concentrations were lowest in sands and highest in marine clays. In ground ice, the highest concentrations above 500 ppmV and higher were found in massive tabular ground ice, with much lower methane concentrations in ground ice wedges. The mean isotopic composition of methane is −68.6‰ in permafrost and −63.6‰ in the active layer indicative of microbial genesis. The isotopic compositions of the active layer is enriched relative to permafrost due to microbial oxidation and become more depleted with depth. Ice-rich sediments of Kara Sea coasts, especially those with massive tabular ground ice, hold large amounts of methane making them potential sources of methane emissions under projected warming temperatures and increasing rates of coastal erosion.
