Piplartine, also known as piperlongumine, is a natural and biologically active amide alkaloid found in various Piper species within the Piperaceae family. It possesses numerous beneficial properties that can be leveraged in the development of nanotechnological and pharmaceutical products. However, information on the effects of piplartine on mammalian embryonic development is scarce. This study aims to assess the general toxicity and teratogenic potential of piplartine during the embryonic development of mice. Pregnant mice received daily treatments of 25, 50, or 100 mg/kg of piplartine via gavage from the sixth day of gestation (implantation) to the eighteenth. On the eighteenth day, the mice were euthanized, and whole organs, blood samples (for hematological and biochemical analyses), and bone marrow cells (for DNA fragmentation and cell cycle assays) were collected. The uterus was examined for implantation sites and embryo resorptions. Additionally, fetuses were collected to assess for fetal anomalies. Piplartine did not result in maternal or embryo-fetal toxicity, induce fetal anomalies, cause hematological and biochemical alterations, or lead to DNA fragmentation. The oral administration of piplartine is safe and does not exhibit toxicity or teratogenic effects in mice. This finding opens avenues for the development of piplartine-based biotechnological products for therapeutic interventions in disease treatment.

Cajuína is a processed drink derived from cashew and is widely consumed in the northeast region of Brazil. This study evaluated the effect of a cajuína-based hydroelectrolytic drink on the aerobic performance and hydration status of recreational runners. Seventeen males (31.9 ± 1.6 years, 51.0 ± 1.4 ml/kg/min) performed three time-to-exhaustion running sessions on a treadmill at 70% VO2max, ingesting cajuína hydroelectrolytic drink (CJ), high carbohydrate commercial hydroelectrolytic drink (CH) and mineral water (W) every 15 min during the running test. The participants ran 80.3 ± 8.4 min in CJ, 70.3 ± 6.8 min in CH and 71.8 ± 6.9 min in W, with no statistical difference between procedures. Nevertheless, an effect size of η2 = 0.10 (moderate) was observed. No statistical difference was observed in the concentrations of sodium, potassium, and osmolality in both serum and urine between the three conditions. However, the effect size was moderate (urine sodium) and high (serum sodium, potassium, and osmolality). Urine specific gravity, sweating rate and heart rate were not significantly different between drinks. The cajuína-based hydroelectrolytic drink promotes similar effects compared to commercial hydroelectrolytic drink and water, considering specific urine gravity, heart rate, sweating, and time to exhaustion in recreational runners.

Ready-to-eat (RTE) and ready-to-heat (RTH) dishes are food items that help save time, physical energy, and mental effort in all food-related activities. Convenience of use, variability of supply, and adaptability to different consumption occasions have led to an increase of acceptance among consumers through the years. Specialized databases can help in this context, where food composition databases can provide information and data to create sustainable nutritional models by reducing the now growing number of chronic diseases. This paper aims at developing a database of LanguaLTM and FoodEx2 codes of 50 food preparations and ready-to-eat dishes designed for consumption outside the home. LanguaLTM, as well as FoodEx2, are classification and description systems for indexing, in the sense of a systematic description, of foods based on a hierarchical model (parent–child relationship), thus facilitating the international exchange of data on food composition, consumption, assessing chronic and/or acute exposure to a certain agent, and not least the assessment of nutrient intake. The database, here presented, consists of the codes of fifty ready-to-eat products present on the market in Italy, obtained by using the two mostly commonly used and widely recognized coding systems: LanguaLTM and FoodEx2. This database represents a tool and a guideline for other compilers and users to apply coding systems to ready-to-eat products. Moreover, it can be represented a resource for several applications, such as nutritional cards, nutritional facts, food labels, or booklet and brochures for promotion of food products, to be used at health and food nutrition interface, useful for consumers, dieticians, and food producers.

Opioids such as morphine are the first choice in acute and chronic pain treatment. However, they lead to addiction. Several studies have searched (i) to find a molecule that can replace morphine use or (ii) to reduce its adverse effects. This work aimed to evaluate whether (–)-Borneol [(–)-BOR], a bicyclic monoterpene, in doses of 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg (i.p.), has an antiaddictive effect on morphine (5 mg/kg, i.p.) and reduces its withdrawal symptoms precipitated by naloxone (8 mg/kg, i.p.) in Swiss mice. Furthermore, the (–)-BOR genotoxic potential was also investigated by the comet assay. The antiaddictive effect of (–)-BOR was evaluated by the conditioned preference place (CPP). The CPP was induced by morphine administration during the conditioning phase. The effects of (–)-BOR on the rewarding characteristics of morphine were tested in mice with the administration of (–)-BOR, naloxone, or vehicle (NaCl 0.9%), 30 min before morphine. This work also investigated the (–)-BOR effect on morphine withdrawal symptoms precipitated by naloxone. Morphine withdrawal symptoms were induced by administering morphine twice daily for 5 days, precipitated by naloxone administration on the sixth day. The effect of (–)-BOR on reducing morphine withdrawal symptoms was evaluated in mice that received (–)-BOR before daily morphine administration. Finally, the comet assay was performed to assess the DNA damage degree caused by the (–)-BOR (100 mg/kg, i.p.) administration. The comet assay was performed on peripheral blood taken from the tail of each animal. Cyclophosphamide (50 mg/kg, i.p.) was used to induce DNA damage. After starting the protocol, analyses were performed for 4 h (acute effect) and 24 h (repair effect). The (–)-BOR (100 mg/kg, i.p.) significantly attenuated (*** p < 0.001) the acquisition of morphine-induced CPP and reduced only the jumping behavior in the morphine withdrawal model. The best-studied dose was 100 mg/kg, being evaluated, then, in the comet assay. (–)-BOR at 100 mg/kg did not show the genotoxic effect when compared with the cyclophosphamide group (CYCLO, 50 mg/kg, i.p.) after 4 h or 24 h, a period that corresponded to the repair time of DNA fragmentation. The study showed that (–)-BOR attenuated the acquisition of CPP by morphine and made opioid withdrawal milder. In the comet assay, although (–)-BOR caused DNA damage, this damage was significantly less than the damage by CYCLO, at either 4 h or 24 h after the treatments.

Abstract Background The purpose of this study was to evaluate the overall diet quality effects, mainly on antioxidant nutritional status and some cytokines related to the cellular immune response as well as oxidative stress in a healthy Italian population group. Methods An observational study was conducted on 131 healthy free-living subjects. Dietary intake was assessed by dietary diary. Standardised procedures were used to make anthropometric measurements. On blood samples (serum, plasma and whole blood) were evaluated: antioxidant status by vitamin A, vitamin E, carotenoids, vitamin C, uric acid, SH groups, SOD and GPx activities; lipid blood profile by total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides; total antioxidant capacity by FRAP and TRAP; the immune status by TNF-α, and IL-10 cytokines; the levels of malondialdehyde in the erythrocytes as marker of lipid peroxidation. Results The daily macronutrients intake (g/day) have shown a high lipids consumption and significant differences between the sexes with regard to daily micronutrients intake. On total sample mean Mediterranean Diet Score (MDS) was 4.5 ± 1.6 and no significant differences between the sexes were present. A greater adherence to a Mediterranean dietary pattern increases the circulating plasma levels of carotenoids (lutein plus zeaxanthin, cryptoxanthin, α and β-carotene), vitamin A and vitamin E. The levels of endogenous antioxidants were also improved. We observed higher levels in anti-inflammatory effect cytokines (IL-10) in subjects with MDS ≥ 6, by contrast, subjects with MDS ≤ 3 show higher levels in sense of proinflammatory (TNF α P < 0.05). Lower levels of MDA were associated with MDS > 4. Our data suggest a protective role of vitamin A against chronic inflammatory conditions especially in subjects with the highest adherence to the Mediterranean-type dietary pattern. Conclusions Mediterranean dietary pattern is associated with significant amelioration of multiple risk factors, including a better cardiovascular risk profile, reduced oxidative stress and modulation of inflammation.

Background: Heart failure (HF) remains a prevalent syndrome with significant morbidity and mortality. Optimal drug and device therapies are crucial to reduce the risk of death or HF admission. Yet, less symptomatic patients with good functional capacity are often perceived as having a low risk of adverse events and their attending physicians may suffer from prescription inertia or refrain from performing therapy optimization. Maximum or peak oxygen consumption (pVO2) assessed during cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) is often used as a prognosis indicator and surrogate marker for functional capacity. Our goal was to assess clinical outcomes in a seemingly low risk HF population in Weber class A (pVO2>20 mL/kg/min) with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). Methods: Single-center retrospective observational study enrolling consecutive HF patients with LVEF20 mL/kg/min were included. The primary endpoint was a composite of all-cause death or HF hospitalizations at two years after CPET. We also assessed the rates of N-terminal pro b-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) elevations at baseline. Results: Seventy-two patients were included (mean age of 53 ± 10 years; 86% male; 90% NYHA I-II; median LVEF 32%; median pVO2 24 mL/kg/min). At baseline, 93% had an NT-proBNP level >125 pg/mL (median NT-proBNP 388 [201–684] pg/mL). Overall, seven patients (10%) met the primary endpoint: three died (4%) and five (7%) had at least one HF admission. Among those who died, only one patient had an HF admission during follow up. Conclusion: In a clinically stable HFrEF population with good functional capacity, persistent neurohormonal activation was present in the majority, and one in ten patients died or had a HF admission at two years’ follow-up. These findings support the urgent need to motivate clinicians to pursue optimal drug uptitration even in less symptomatic patients. Resumo: Introdução: A insuficiência cardíaca (IC) com fração de ejeção reduzida é uma síndrome prevalente com morbimortalidade significativa. O aprimoramento da terapêutica é crucial para reduzir o risco de morte ou admissão por IC. No entanto, doentes paucissintomáticos com boa capacidade funcional são frequentemente considerados como tendo um baixo risco de eventos adversos, não são, por isso, alvo de aprimoramento terapêutico. O consumo máximo de oxigénio (pVO2), avaliado durante provas de esforço cardiorrespiratórias (PECR), é utilizado como um marcador prognóstico e da capacidade funcional do doente. O nosso objetivo foi avaliar o número e tipo de eventos clínicos numa população de IC com aparente baixo risco em classe Weber A (pVO2 > 20 mL/kg/min) e fração de ejeção ventricular esquerda (FEVE) reduzida. Métodos: Estudo observacional, retrospetivo, unicêntrico, incluindo doentes consecutivos com IC com FEVE 20 mL/kg/min foram incluídos. O endpoint primário foi um composto de morte por todas as causas ou hospitalização por IC nos dois anos após a PECR. Também avaliámos a percentagem de doentes com elevação basal de NT-proBNP. Resultados: Foram incluídos 72 doentes (idade 53 ± 10 anos; 86% homens; 90% classe NYHA I-II; FEVE média 32%; pVO2 mediana 24 mL/kg/min), 93% apresentavamm um nível de NT-proBNP >125 pg/mL (NT-proBNP mediano 388 [201-684] pg/mL). Globalmente, sete doentes (10%) atingiram o endpoint primário: três por óbito (4%) e cinco (7%) tiveram pelo menos uma hospitalização por IC. Entre os doentes que faleceram, apenas um teve uma hospitalização por IC, pelo que contabilizado pelo primeiro evento (hospitalização). Conclusão: Numa população clinicamente estável de doentes com ICFEr e boa capacidade funcional, a maioria apresentou ativação neuro-hormonal persistente e um em cada dez atingiu o endpoint primário (óbito ou internamento por IC) durante um follow-up de dois anos após a PECR. Esses achados fortalecem a necessidade urgente de promover a prescrição otimizada de terapêuticas modificadoras de doença.

Since ancient times, medicinal plants have been a universal source of biologically active substances with high potential for the treatment of various diseases and disorders. For centuries, traditional communities have often relied on medicinal plants to treat health problems. Therefore, accurate information is required and knowledge about traditional medicinal plants requires evaluation, and great attention should be given to the possible integration of these plants as therapeutic agents or as complements to conventional pharmacological therapies in the healthcare system. Recently, Griffonia simplicifolia (DC.) Baill., initially used as a holistic remedy, has attracted attention from many researchers and consumers because of its multiple health-promoting effects. This growing interest prompted us to give an updated review of the botanical, geographical, historical, and therapeutic potentials of Griffonia simplicifolia (DC.) Baill. in terms of its in vitro and in vivo health effects, nutritional uses, and possible applications in line with biodiversity and sustainability concepts. This paper also presents a quantitative research analysis of the published studies related to this plant that are available in the literature. To retrieve the publications related to this plant, a bibliographic search was carried out using the Scopus database. The bibliometric data were extracted and processed using VOSviewer software (v.1.6.16, 2020). Technological possible applications in terms of patents request presented was also performed. A total of 1386 publications, from the year 1970 to the year 2021, were obtained by the literature search, and these had been collectively cited 38,805 times. The large amount of literature data available documents the interest in this plant’s use as a tool for integrating traditional holistic healing approach, e.g., using plants, herbs, and holistic remedies, into the healthcare system as supporting tools and/or therapeutic agents, which is a current worldwide challenge.

In recent years, EVs have emerged as promising vehicles for coding and non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), which have demonstrated remarkable potential as biomarkers for various diseases, including chronic liver diseases (CLDs). EVs are small, membrane-bound particles released by cells, carrying an arsenal of ncRNAs, including microRNAs (miRNAs), long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), and other ncRNA species, such as piRNAs, circRNAs, and tsRNAs. These ncRNAs act as key regulators of gene expression, splicing, and translation, providing a comprehensive molecular snapshot of the cells of origin. The non-invasive nature of EV sampling, typically via blood or serum collection, makes them highly attractive candidates for clinical biomarker applications. Moreover, EV-encapsulated ncRNAs offer unique advantages over traditional cell-free ncRNAs due to their enhanced stability within the EVs, hence allowing for their detection in circulation for extended periods and enabling more sensitive and reliable biomarker measurements. Numerous studies have investigated the potential of EV-enclosed ncRNAs as biomarkers for CLD. MiRNAs, in particular, have gained significant attention due to their ability to rapidly respond to changes in cellular stress and inflammation, hallmarks of CLD pathogenesis. Elevated levels of specific miRNAs have been consistently associated with various CLD subtypes, including metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), and chronic hepatitis B and C. LncRNAs have also emerged as promising biomarkers for CLD. These transcripts are involved in a wide range of cellular processes, including liver regeneration, fibrosis, and cancer progression. Studies have shown that lncRNA expression profiles can distinguish between different CLD subtypes, providing valuable insights into disease progression and therapeutic response. Promising EV-enclosed ncRNA biomarkers for CLD included miR-122 (elevated levels of miR-122 are associated with MASLD progression and liver fibrosis), miR-21 (increased expression of miR-21 is linked to liver inflammation and fibrosis in CLD patients), miR-192 (elevated levels of miR-192 are associated with more advanced stages of CLD, including cirrhosis and HCC), LncRNA HOTAIR (increased HOTAIR expression is associated with MASLD progression and MASH development), and LncRNA H19 (dysregulation of H19 expression is linked to liver fibrosis and HCC progression). In the present review, we focus on the EV-enclosed ncRNAs as promising tools for the diagnosis and monitoring of CLD of various etiologies.

This study aims to evaluate the hepatoprotective, hypolipidemic and aortic morphometric effects of fish oil rich in omega-3 in hypercholesterolemic BALB/c mice. This is an experimental model that included 16 male BALB/c mice (Mus musculus) divided into three groups (G1 (standard commercial chow and 0.9% saline solution), G2 (hypercholesterolemic diet and 0.9% saline solution) and G3 (hypercholesterolemic diet and fish oil)) for 8 weeks. There was no significant difference in the treatment with omega-3-rich fish oil in the lipid profile (p > 0.05). In the histological analysis, group G2 detected the presence of hepatitis and liver tissue necrosis, but this was not observed in group G3. As for the morphometry in the light area of the vessel, the G1 group had a higher score (2.62 ± 0.36 mm2) when compared to G2 (2.10 ± 0.16 mm2) and G3 (2.26 ± 0.25 mm2) (p < 0.05). The vessel wall thickness did not differ between the groups (p > 0.05). It is concluded that supplementation with fish oil rich in omega-3 carried out in this study may have a protective effect on liver tissue, but it has not yet improved the lipid and morphometric profile. Despite this research being preliminary, it is a relevant study with future prospects for improving the doses of EPA and DHA in order to better elucidate the benefits of fish oil in models of dyslipidemia.

Resumo: Apesar dos avanços da medicina, há já várias décadas que os exames comparticipados pelo Serviço Nacional de Saúde (SNS) para o estudo e estratificação de risco da doença coronária se mantêm inalterados em cuidados de saúde primários. Apesar do desajuste à prática clínica contemporânea ser há muito evidente, a recente publicação das Recomendações Europeias para o diagnóstico e tratamento da síndrome coronária crónica veio realçar ainda mais este desfasamento e evidenciar a necessidade imperiosa de mudança na forma como são estudados estes pacientes em Portugal. No seguimento desta publicação, o Grupo de Estudo de Cardiologia Nuclear, Ressonância Magnética (RM) e Tomografia Computorizada (TC) Cardíaca, o Grupo de Estudo de Ecocardiografia e o Grupo de Estudos de Patofisiologia do Esforço e Reabilitação Cardíaca da Sociedade Portuguesa de Cardiologia iniciaram um processo de reflexão conjunta sobre as limitações atuais e a forma como poderiam ser aplicadas as recomendações internacionais no nosso país. Para tal, os autores sugerem que os novos métodos de imagem (ecocardiograma de esforço ou de sobrecarga, TC e RM cardíaca) se associem à prova de esforço e cintigrafia de perfusão do miocárdio no portfólio de exames oferecidos pelo SNS. Esta alteração permitiria uma plena adoção das recomendações europeias e uma melhor utilização dos meios, de acordo com o contexto clínico, a disponibilidade e as particularidades locais. A adoção de “normas de orientação clínica” baseadas nestes pressupostos traduzir‐se‐ia numa melhoria qualitativa na abordagem e otimização terapêutica destes pacientes, ao mesmo tempo em que potenciaria uma gestão eficaz dos recursos disponíveis, com potenciais ganhos de saúde e financeiros. Abstract: Despite constant medical evolution, the reimbursement policy of Portuguese National Health Service (NHS) for the study and risk stratification of coronary heart disease has remained unchanged for several decades. Lack of adjustment to contemporary clinical practice has long been evident. However, the recent publication of the European Guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of chronic coronary syndromes further highlighted this gap and the urgent need for a change. Prompted by these Guidelines, the Working Group on Nuclear Cardiology, Cardiac Magnetic Resonance and Cardiac CT, the Working Group on Echocardiography and the Working Group on Stress Pathophysiology and Cardiac Rehabilitation of the Portuguese Society of Cardiology, began a process of joint reflection on the current limitations and how these recommendations could be applied in Portugal. To this end, the authors suggest that the new imaging methods (stress echocardiogram, cardiac computed tomography and cardiac magnetic resonance), should be added to exercise treadmill stress test and myocardial perfusion scintigraphy in the available exam portfolio within the Portuguese NHS. This change would allow full adoption of European guidelines and a better use of tests, according to clinical context, availability and local specificities. The adoption of clinical guidance standards, based on these assumptions, would translate into a qualitative improvement in the management of these patients and would promote an effective use of the available resources, with potential health and financial gains.

Harmonized composition data for foods and dietary supplements are needed for research and for policy decision making. For a correct assessment of dietary intake, the categorization and the classification of food products and dietary supplements are necessary. In recent decades, the marketing of dietary supplements has increased. A food supplements-based database has, as a principal feature, an intrinsic dynamism related to the continuous changes in formulations, which consequently leads to the need for constant monitoring of the market and for regular updates of the database. This study presents an update to the Dietary Supplement Label Database in Italy focused on dietary supplements coding. The updated dataset here, presented for the first time, consists of the codes of 216 dietary supplements currently on the market in Italy that have functional foods as their characterizing ingredients, throughout the two commonly most used description and classification systems: LanguaLTM and FoodEx2-. This update represents a unique tool and guideline for other compilers and users for applying classification coding systems to dietary supplements. Moreover, this updated dataset represents a valuable resource for several applications such as epidemiological investigations, exposure studies, and dietary assessment.

Solid Lipid Nanoparticles (SLNs) are drug delivery systems with important advantages over conventional nanosystems. Considering previously reported pharmacological and physicochemical properties of Platonia insignis seed butter (BBI), this work aimed at developing, characterizing and performing toxicological and antioxidant studies of SLNs produced from BBI. The GC-MS analysis identified palmitic and oleic acids as the major compounds. Three SLN prototypes were developed through high-shear homogenization followed by ultrasonication. During a 180-day stability evaluation, the formulation SLN/TW-1.5 presented greater stability since pH was around 6.0, as well as a lesser variation of the PdI (Polydispersity Index), particle size and Zeta Potential (ZP), confirmed with Raman Spectroscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). The CC50 in macrophages was around 249.4 µg∙mL−1 for BBI, whereas the CC50 value for SLN/TW-1.5 was 45.2 µg∙mL−1. Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) showed a marked in vitro antioxidant activity for BBI and SLN/TW-1.5. After in vivo SLN/TW-1.5 administration in Zophobas morio larvae, assessment of reduced glutathione (GSH), nitrite (NO2−) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) demonstrated antioxidant activity. Thus, the intrinsic physicochemical properties of BBI allowed the development of an optimized nanoformulation with high stability indexes, besides the great potential for antioxidant applications.

Nowadays, modern agriculture looks for valid, sustainable, and green alternatives that are able to improve and maintain soil quality and fertility over time. Recycling organic waste as fertilizer is one of the strategies for sustainable production. Recently, the use of new products derived from compost, such as compost tea (CT), is increasing due to their positive effects on crops. This perspective wants to give an updated shot at the effect of compost tea in horticulture. In addition to the classification of compost tea, with a focus on production procedures and composition, the possible effects they have both on the control of phytopathogens in horticulture and the influence they can have on the content of bioactive molecules and nutrients were highlighted. It is interesting to note that compost teas can have an effect on the final content of micro and macronutrients, thus improving the nutritional qualities and also increasing the content of bioactive compounds that may play a role in maintaining and improving human health. The combined use of compost tea with other treatments is being explored as a promising and innovative direction.

(1) Background: The prompt diagnosis of anterior mediastinal lesions is a challenge due to their often being categorized as malignant tumours. Ultrasound-guided Transthoracic Core Needle Biopsy (US–TCNB) is an innovative technique that is arousing increasing interest in clinical practice. However, studies in this area are still scarce. This study aims to compare the diagnostic accuracy and complication rate of US–TCNB with those of traditional surgical methods—Anterior Mediastinotomy and Video Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS)—in patients with anterior mediastinal lesions. (2) Methods: This retrospective study involved patients evaluated between January 2011 and December 2021 who had undergone US–TCNB at the Interdepartmental Unit of Internal and Interventional Ultrasound, Molinette Hospital, Città della Salute e della Scienza, Turin, Italy. Personal data, diagnostic questions, and technical information concerning the bioptic procedure, periprocedural complications and histological reports were collected. (3) Results: Eighty-three patients were included in the analysis. Histological examination was performed in 78 cases, with an overall diagnostic accuracy of 94.0% (sensitivity 94%; specificity 100%). Only in 5 patients was a diagnosis not achieved. Complications occurred in 2 patients who were quickly identified and properly treated without need of hospitalization. The accuracy of US–TCNB was comparable to the performance of the main traditional diagnostic alternatives (95.3% for anterior mediastinotomy, and 98.4% for VATS), with a much lower complication rate (2.4% vs. 3–16%). The outpatient setting offered the additional advantage of saving resources. (4) Conclusions: a US-guided needle biopsy can be considered effective and safe, and in the near future it may become the procedure of choice for diagnosing anterior mediastinal lesions in selected patients.

The present study investigates the relationship between the consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPF) and anthropometric indices of body composition in adults and seniors living in Teresina, the state capital of an area in northeastern Brazil. The article seeks to address two questions: Is UPF consumption linked to worsening body composition in different age groups? Do anthropometric indicators of body composition change with the increasing consumption of UPF? The study is a cross-sectional, household, population study, carried out with 490 adults and seniors. The food consumption was obtained with a 24 h food recall, and the foods were classified using NOVA. Anthropometric indicators evaluated were waist-to-height ratio, triceps skinfold thickness, arm circumference, corrected arm muscle area, subscapular skinfold thickness, and calf circumference. The association between energy contribution of UPF with anthropometric indicators was verified with a simple and multiple linear regression analysis. Individuals aged 20 to 35 years showed a significant association between UPF consumption and skinfold thickness (ß: 0.04; CI: 0.03/0.09), demonstrating an increase in this subcutaneous body fat marker with higher UPF consumption. Moreover, in participants aged 36 to 59 years, an inverse correlation between UPF intake and muscle mass markers, arm circumference (ß: −0.02; confidence interval: −0.03/−0.01), and corrected arm muscle area (ß: −0.07; confidence interval: −0.12/−0.02) were observed. Such results suggest there is decreased muscle mass with increasing UPF consumption. This is the first study that verified an association between UPF consumption and low-cost body composition indicators in different age groups.

Introduction: Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) programs have a central role in cardiovascular medicine, encompassing a comprehensive framework able to holistically address various facets of cardiovascular disease. However, several obstacles to their optimal application have been reported. Over the years, the Portuguese Society of Cardiology has periodically conducted a national survey on the state of CR in Portugal. Objectives: This study reports the results of the 2019 survey on CR. Methods: In December 2019 a voluntary questionnaire was sent to centers offering CR programs, consisting of several items concerning this intervention. Results: In 2019, 25 centers provided structured CR programs. A total of 2182 patients underwent phase II programs, representing an increase of 13% from the previous survey. Of these, 67.2% were referred due to ischemic heart disease, and 14.5% due to heart failure. Acute coronary syndromes (ACS) comprised 49.3% of referrals, leading to an estimated 9.3% CR coverage. Abstract Background MicroRNA-146a-5p (miR-146a-5p) is a key regulator of inflammatory processes. Expression of miR-146a-5p is altered in target organs of diabetic complications and deficiency of miR-146a-5p has been implicated in their pathogenesis. We investigated if serum miR-146a-5p levels were independently associated with micro/macrovascular complications of type 1 diabetes (DM1). Methods A nested case–control study from the EURODIAB PCS of 447 DM1 patients was performed. Cases (n = 294) had one or more complications of diabetes, whereas controls (n = 153) did not have any complication. Total RNA was isolated from all subjects and miR-146a-5p levels measured by qPCR. Both the endogenous controls U6 snRNA and the spike (Cel-miR-39) were used to normalize the results. Logistic regression analysis was carried out to investigate the association of miR-146a-5p with diabetes complications. Results MiR-146a-5p levels were significantly lower in cases [1.15 (0.32–3.34)] compared to controls [1.74 (0.44–6.74) P = 0.039]. Logistic regression analysis showed that levels of miR-146a-5p in the upper quartile were inversely associated with reduced odds ratio (OR) of all complications (OR 0.34 [95% CI 0.14–0.76]) and particularly with cardiovascular diseases (CVD) (OR 0.31 [95% CI 0.11–0.84]) and diabetic retinopathy (OR 0.40 [95% CI 0.16–0.99]), independently of age, sex, diabetes duration, A1c, hypertension, AER, eGFR, NT-proBNP, and TNF-α. Conclusions In this large cohort of DM1 patients, we reported an inverse and independent association of miR-146a-5p with diabetes chronic complications and in particular with CVD and retinopathy, suggesting that miR-146a-5p may be a novel candidate biomarker of DM1 complications.

IntroductionType 1 diabetes (T1D) risk involves genetic susceptibility but also epigenetics, environment, and behaviors. Appropriate metabolic control, especially quickly after the diagnosis, is crucial for the patient quality of life.MethodsThis study aimed to produce a quantitative comparison of the behavior, nutrition habits, and gut microbiota composition between the onset and the 1-year follow-up in 35 children with T1D.Results and discussionAt follow-up, with the metabolic control, many parameters improved significantly, with respect to the onset, such as glycated hemoglobin (−19%), body mass index (BMI), and also nutritional behaviors, such as normal calorie intake (+6%), carbohydrate intake (−12%), extra portion request (−4%), and meals distribution during the day. Moreover, glycated hemoglobin decrement correlated with both total and rapid absorption carbohydrate intake (Spearman's rho = 0.288, 95% CI 0.066–0.510, p = 0.013), showing as the nutritional behavior supported the insulin therapy efficiency. The next-generation sequencing (NGS) analysis of microbiota revealed abundance differences for Ruminococcus bromii and Prevotella copri (higher at onset, p < 0.001) and the genera Succinivibrio and Faecalibacterium (lower at onset, p < 0.001), as a consequence of nutritional behavior, but it was not the only changing driver. The qRT-PCR analysis showed significant variations, in particular for Bacteroidetes and Bifidobacterium spp. (+1.56 log gene copies/g stool at follow-up, p < 0.001). During the year, in 11% of the patients, severe clinical episodes occurred (hypoglycemic or ketoacidosis). The likelihood of a severe hypoglycemic episode was modulated when the Methanobrevibacter smithii amount increased (odds ratio 3.7, 95% CI 1.2–11.4, p = 0.026). Integrated evaluation, including nutritional behavior and microbiota composition, could be considered predictive of the metabolic control management for children cohort with a recent diagnosis of T1D.

‘Tonda Gentile Romana’ and ‘Tonda di Giffoni’ (Corylus avellana L.) are two Italian hazelnut cultivars, recognized under the quality labels “Protected Designation of Origin” (PDO) and “Protected Geographical Indication” (PGI), respectively. Hazelnut seeds are characterized by a complex microstructure and the presence of different physical compartments. This peculiarity has been studied and evidenced by Time Domain (TD) Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) experiments. This technique allowed the assessment of the presence of different diffusion compartments, or domains, by evaluating the distribution of the spin–spin relaxation time (T2).The aim of this research was to develop a method based on 1H NMR relaxometry to study the mobility in fresh hazelnut seeds (‘Tonda di Giffoni’ and ‘Tonda Gentile Romana’), in order to determine differences in seed structure and matrix mobility between the two cultivars. TD-NMR measurements were performed from 8 to 55 °C in order to mimic post-harvest processing as well the microscopic textural properties of hazelnut. The Carr–Purcell–Meiboom–Gill (CPMG) experiments showed five components for ‘Tonda Gentile Romana’ and four components for ‘Tonda di Giffoni’ relaxation times. The two slowest components of relaxation (T2,a about 30–40% of the NMR signal, and T2,b about 50% of the NMR signal) were attributed to the protons of the lipid molecules organized in the organelles (oleosomes), both for the ‘Tonda Gentile Romana’ and for the ‘Tonda di Giffoni’ samples. The component of relaxation T2,c was assigned to cytoplasmic water molecules, and showed a T2 value dominated by diffusive exchange with a reduced value compared to that of pure water at the same temperature. This can be attributed to the water molecules affected by the relaxation effect of the cell walls. The experiments carried out as a function of temperature showed, for ‘Tonda Gentile Romana’, an unexpected trend between 30 and 45 °C, indicating a phase transition in its oil component. This study provides information that could be used to strengthen the specifications underlying the definitions of “Protected Designation of Origin” (PDO) and “Protected Geographical Indication” (PGI).

Nowadays, the modified atmosphere with ozone is one of the main alternatives for controlling insect pests in stored grains, as it allows grain quality to be maintained while causing no environmental damage. In light of this, the purpose of this study was to assess the toxicity of ozone to C. maculatus in cowpea grains as well as how it affects the physiological and physical properties of the grains. The toxicity was determined by estimating lethal doses (mg/g) at the top and bottom of the fumigation chamber for 50% and 95% of adult insects (LD50 and LD95). Cowpea grain samples were removed after being exposed to ozone, and the effect of ozonation on the physical and physiological quality of the grains was assessed. The electrical conductivity, water content, and germination were all examined in this manner. The lethal doses LD50 were 65.97 and 45.52 mg/g when the insects were distributed at the top and bottom of the fumigation chamber, respectively. As a result, ozone toxicity was higher at the bottom than at the top. The increase in ozone doses resulted in a decrease in water content. The germination rate exceeded 90% in both locations where ozone was applied. The electrical conductivity remained constant, ranging between 152.01 and 239.59 S cm−1 g −1. The findings indicate that ozone is toxic to C. maculatus but has no effect on grain quality. Ozone may therefore be used to manage C. maculatus in cowpea that has been stored.

This research was aimed at evaluating the relationship between the estimated polyphenol intake and the atherogenic lipid profile in adult and elder residents in the city of Teresina, located in the Northeastern Region of Brazil. This study was a cross-sectional population-based survey with 501 adults and elders, conducted in Teresina, Brazil. Food intake was obtained by 24-h food recall. The estimated polyphenol intake was calculated by multiplying the food consumption data from the recall by the polyphenol content in the foods described in the Phenol-Explorer database. The mean intake of total polyphenols was 1006.53 mg/day. The phenolic acids was the class with the highest intake, followed by the flavonols. Coffee, beans and apples were the main foods contributing to the total polyphenol intake. In the individuals with elevated serum concentrations of total cholesterol and triglycerides, the intake of total polyphenols was significantly higher. The intake of total polyphenols, phenolic acids and lignans was higher in the subjects with dyslipidemia. This article provides, for the first time, data on the intake of the total polyphenol classes and subclasses in the evaluated population and the relationship with the lipid profile. The individuals with a higher intake of total polyphenols had a worse lipid profile, which may be a consequence of an improved diet in those individuals who present with dyslipidemia.

The potato is a root vegetable native to the Americas; it consists of the starchy tuber of the plant Solanum tuberosum. There are many varieties, and the flesh can have different colour ranging from yellow to red and purple. Coloured varieties have a denser texture and slightly nuttier, earthier flavour than other potatoes. The desirable quality characteristics of potatoes depends on the intended use, and the acceptability of raw potatoes is determined by size, shape, colour, and the quality of can be evaluated in terms of colour, flavour, and texture. Deep-frying is the century-old and it is among the most common cooking processes, still being used to prepare a variety of food products on both industrial and domestic scales. Frying the potatoes is among the tastiest and appreciated way to cook this vegetable. Purple fleshed potatoes are widely considered one of the best-tasting purple potatoes varieties, they have a nice taste and add colour to a meal. They are a source of beneficial health compounds which makes them interesting as functional food. The anthocyanins present in the Purple Majesty variety are interesting for their health promoting abilities, anti-oxidative activity, and even other health beneficial effects, e.g. anti-influenza virus activity, and anti-stomach cancer activity. The aim of this study has been to assess the effect of deep-frying of purple potato Purple Majesty using sunflower oil on the polyphenols, anthocyanins and to evaluate the antioxidant activity of the cooked matrix compared to the fresh one. The results seem to suggest that the healthy characteristics of this functional food are retained after the cooking by frying.

Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a chronic immune-inflammatory disease of the liver, generally considered a rare condition. The clinical manifestation is extremely varied and can range from paucisymptomatic forms to severe hepatitis. Chronic liver damage causes activation of hepatic and inflammatory cells leading to inflammation and oxidative stress through the production of mediators. This results in increased collagen production and extracellular matrix deposition leading to fibrosis and even cirrhosis. The gold standard for the diagnosis of fibrosis is liver biopsy; however, there are serum biomarkers, scoring systems, and radiological methods useful for diagnosis and staging. The goal of AIH treatment is to suppress fibrotic and inflammatory activities in the liver to prevent disease progression and achieve complete remission. Therapy involves the use of classic steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and immunosuppressants, but in recent years scientific research has focused on several new alternative drugs for AIH that will be discussed in the review.

Hydrogels are structures that have value for application in the area of tissue engineering because they mimic the extracellular matrix. Naturally obtained polysaccharides, such as chitosan (CH) and cashew gum, are materials with the ability to form polymeric networks due to their physicochemical properties. This research aimed to develop a scaffold based on chitosan and phthalated cashew tree gum and test it as a support for the growth of human mesenchymal stem cells. In this study, phthalation in cashew gum (PCG) was performed by using a solvent-free route. PCG-CH scaffold was developed by polyelectrolyte complexation, and its ability to support adherent stem cell growth was evaluated. The scaffold showed a high swelling rate. The pore sizes of the scaffold were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. Human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs) were isolated, expanded, and characterized for their potential to differentiate into mesenchymal lineages and for their immunophenotypic profile. Isolated mesenchymal stem cells presented fibroblastoid morphology, plastic adhesion capacity, and differentiation in osteogenic, adipogenic, and chondrogenic lineages. Mesenchymal stem cells were cultured in scaffolds to assess cell adhesion and growth. The cells seeded on the scaffold showed typical morphology, attachment, and adequate distribution inside the matrix pores. Thus, cells seeded in the scaffold may improve the osteoinductive and osteoconductive properties of these biomaterials.

Considering the therapeutic potential of Varronia curassavica Jacq. essential oil and the great value in the pharmaceutical market, this study aims to evaluate the influence of plant age on the chemical composition and biological activities of V. curassavica Jacq. essential oil. The plant age is a parameter that can influence the chemical composition of the essential oil, as well as its pharmacological potential. For this purpose, essential oils from aerial parts of V. curassavica produced at different ages (4, 10, 14 and 18 months-age) were used. According to chromatograms obtained by GC-MS, the essential oils were mainly composed of α-pinene, trans-caryophyllene, α-santalene, alloaromadendrene and α-humulene. The chemical composition of V. curassavica essential oils varied qualitatively and quantitatively with the aging of the plants, and the essential oils from plants at 18 month-age appeared to be the most distinct from the others. The tested essential oil samples showed inhibitory activity against Candida albicans (MIC = 1000 µg/mL) but did not show antibacterial activity against the tested bacteria. The cytotoxic activity levels against the murine macrophages varied among the oils extracted from the plants at different ages; the IC50 values of the essential oils increased with age (171.90 µg/mL at 18 month-age). More studies should be carried out to assess whether age also affects the therapeutic effects of essential oils, resulting in the manufacture of plant-derived formulations that balance production costs, toxicity and therapeutic effects.

Nanopharmaceuticals and nanonutraceuticals research has been lately receiving a lot of scientific attention. We aimed to identify the top 100 most cited original articles of the scientific area, analyze their research themes, major contributors regarding authors, institutions, countries and journals. The bibliometric data was extracted from the Web of Science electronic database. Data was further processed by a bibliometric software, VOSviewer, to generate bubble maps to visualize the results. Inter-institutional and international collaboration networks were constructed to further understand the cooperation between different study centers. Results revealed that over 60% of the articles were published in the 2000s. As of November 2019, the articles were cited 576–3665 times, with 20.1–261.8 citations per year. The majority of the most prolific institutions were based in the United States. Besides the United States, China, South Korea, Canada and Germany contributed heavily to the 100 articles. Some popular themes included drug delivery, tumor, toxicity/biocompatibility and biodistribution. Regarding composition materials, gold, silver and polymeric nanoparticles were the most commonly used.

The increased utilization of metrology resources and expanded application of its’ approaches in the development of internationally agreed upon measurements can lay the basis for regulatory harmonization, support reproducible research, and advance scientific understanding, especially of dietary supplements and herbal medicines. Yet, metrology is often underappreciated and underutilized in dealing with the many challenges presented by these chemically complex preparations. This article discusses the utility of applying rigorous analytical techniques and adopting metrological principles more widely in studying dietary supplement products and ingredients, particularly medicinal plants and other botanicals. An assessment of current and emerging dietary supplement characterization methods is provided, including targeted and non-targeted techniques, as well as data analysis and evaluation approaches, with a focus on chemometrics, toxicity, dosage form performance, and data management. Quality assessment, statistical methods, and optimized methods for data management are also discussed. Case studies provide examples of applying metrological principles in thorough analytical characterization of supplement composition to clarify their health effects. A new frontier for metrology in dietary supplement science is described, including opportunities to improve methods for analysis and data management, development of relevant standards and good practices, and communication of these developments to researchers and analysts, as well as to regulatory and policy decision makers in the public and private sectors. The promotion of closer interactions between analytical, clinical, and pharmaceutical scientists who are involved in research and product development with metrologists who develop standards and methodological guidelines is critical to advance research on dietary supplement characterization and health effects.

In this work, various concepts and features of anthocyanins have been comprehensively reviewed, taking the benefits of the scientific publications released mainly within the last five years. Within the paper, common topics such as anthocyanin chemistry and occurrence, including the biosynthesis of anthocyanins emphasizing the anthocyanin formation pathway, anthocyanin chemistry, and factors influencing the anthocyanins’ stability, are covered in detail. By evaluating the recent in vitro and human experimental studies on the absorption and bioavailability of anthocyanins present in typical food and beverages, this review elucidates the significant variations in biokinetic parameters based on the model, anthocyanin source, and dose, allowing us to make basic assumptions about their bioavailability. Additionally, special attention is paid to other topics, such as the therapeutic effects of anthocyanins. Reviewing the recent in vitro, in vivo, and epidemiological studies on the therapeutic potential of anthocyanins against various diseases permits a demonstration of the promising efficacy of different anthocyanin sources at various levels, including the neuroprotective, cardioprotective, antidiabetic, antiobesity, and anticancer effects. Additionally, the studies on using plant-based anthocyanins as coloring food mediums are extensively investigated in this paper, revealing the successful use of anthocyanins in coloring various products, such as dietary and bakery products, mixes, juices, candies, beverages, ice cream, and jams. Lastly, the successful application of anthocyanins as prebiotic ingredients, the innovation potential of anthocyanins in industry, and sustainable sources of anthocyanins, including a quantitative research literature and database analysis, is performed.

Platonia insignis Mart, Clusiaceae, known as bacuri, is a species native to Brazil that, in studies with extract of the seed of its fruit, showed antioxidant activity against free radicals. Products with such properties may be of great importance in the treatment of peptic ulcers since this pathology may be associated with the inflammatory process caused by the action of free radicals. Cyclodextrins are molecules capable of forming inclusion complexes with other molecules, affecting their physicochemical properties and improving their pharmacokinetic characteristics. Thus, this work aimed to produce, characterize, and evaluate the gastroprotective effect of the inclusion complex of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) with the bacuri seeds hexanic extract (BSHE). In the characterization of the inclusion complex, an apparent stability constant (Kc) of 416 mol/L was obtained in the solubility study; the BSHE:β-CD m/m (g) complexation ratios at 1:9, 2:8, and 3:7 were 5.51%, 21.46%, and 20.11%, respectively. The formation of the BSHE:β-CD inclusion complex was observed by FTIR technique, indicating the disappearance of bands characteristic of BSHE (2960 cm−1 and 1755 cm−1) when in the complex, compared to the spectra of pure BSHE or in physical mixture with β-CD, and by X-ray diffraction, which indicated a loss of crystallinity, typical signals of pure β-CD, and presentation of intense amorphization, characteristic of BSHE, incorporated in the β-CD pockets. In the evaluation of gastroprotective activity, through absolute ethanol-induced gastric lesions in mice, both BSHE and BSHE:β-CD reduced gastric lesions, with 100 mg/kg dose of the complex having the greatest gastroprotective effect. BSHE:β-CD was also able to reduce gastric lesions from ischemia and reperfusion, with the 50 mg/kg dose being the most effective. BSHE:β-CD, also at this dose, reduced the MDA levels of the gastric mucosa, indicating a possible antioxidant activity in its gastroprotective effect. Thus, it was concluded that inclusion complex formation between β-CD and BSHE is possible, and that this formulation enhanced the gastric protective activity.

In the present study, the effects of cryolipolysis on one and multiple body areas, assessing body composition, lipid profile and peroxidation and inflammatory markers were investigated. Twenty-four women aged between 20 and 59 years were randomly assigned to three groups: (1) control, (2) cryolipolysis on the abdomen and (3) cryolipolysis on the abdomen + flanks. Anthropometric measurements, bioimpedance and ultrasound were performed, as well serum lipid profile, lipid peroxidation markers (malondialdehyde and myeloperoxidase) and inflammatory markers (C-reactive protein and Interleukin-1β) were determined. In addition, food consumption and physical activity level were evaluated. Data were obtained at 0, 10 and 30 days (t0, t10 and t30) after cryolipolysis. Cryolipolysis did not change anthropometric measurements, body composition or lipid profile. Interestingly, the abdomen + flanks group had significantly increased plasma myeloperoxidase activity at t0, t10 and t30, and increased malondialdehyde levels at t0 and t10 when compared to the other groups. Furthermore, there were no differences between macronutrient intake and total energy value, physical activity level, malondialdehyde and interleukin-1β at t30. Cryolipolysis did not change body composition, lipid profile or inflammatory markers investigated. On the other hand, when used on the abdomen and flanks, it produced an increase in lipid peroxidation markers, malondialdehyde and myeloperoxidase.

Food, nutrition, and health are linked, and detailed knowledge of nutrient compositions and bioactive characteristics is needed to understand these relationships. Additionally, increasingly these data are required by database systems and applications. This communication aims to describe the contribution to databases and nutrition fields as well as the activities of EuroFIR AISBL; this member-based, non-profit association was founded to ensure sustained advocacy for food information in Europe and facilitate improved data quality, storage, and access as well as encouraging wider exploitation of food composition data for both research and commercial purposes. In addition to the description of its role and main objectives, a snapshot of EuroFIR AISBL’s activities over the years is also given using a quantitative research literature analysis approach. The focus of this communication is to provide descriptions and updates of EuroFIR’s online tools, i.e., FoodEXplorer, eBASIS, and PlantLIBRA, by highlighting the main uses and applications. Integrating food-related infrastructures and databases, following standardized and harmonized approaches, and considering interoperability and metrological principles are significant challenges. Ongoing activities and future plans of EuroFIR AISBL are highlighted, including, for instance, work within the Food Nutrition Security Cloud (FNS-Cloud) to make food, nutrition, and (food) security data more findable, accessible, interoperable, and ultimately reusable.

Bacuri (Platonia insignis) is a monotype belonging to the Clusiaceae family. Of Amazonian origin, it is highly appreciated for fresh consumption, mainly due to its peculiar sensory characteristics. It is also widely used in the food industry, mainly in pulp (endocarp), used in the manufacture of beverages, jellies, and ice cream. Although the use of pulp is well established in the food sector, recently, research has turned attention to the use of other parts of the fruit and plant, especially in the therapeutics, cosmetics, and fuel sectors. Its bioactive components have been investigated for having important antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, hypotensive, cardioprotective, antiepileptic, antileishmanial, and antifungal activities, among others, mainly attributed to the presence of compounds such as xanthones, terpenes, phenolics, and fatty acids. Thus, this study aimed to gather data on the species Platonia insignis Mart. through an integrative review of the agronomic, nutritional, physical–chemical characteristics and a technological prospection about its applications. The study showed that in the last ten years there has been a significant increase in the number of patents deposited, with the prospect that with the advancement of studies on their properties, results for application in the most diverse areas will prove increasingly viable and promising.

This review describes the state of the art in the field of poly (lactic acid) (PLA)-based materials activated by natural compounds and extracts (active ingredients, AIs) from plant sources for food and biomedical applications. With a multidisciplinary approach, after a description of the synthesis and properties of PLA, special attention was paid to the chemical properties and unconventional extraction technologies of AIs used for PLA activation. Innovative techniques for the incorporation of AIs into PLA; characterization and the antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of the novel materials were discussed. In view of future perspectives, this study has evidenced that some aspects need to be further investigated from joint research between academia and industry, according to the green chemistry principles and circular economy strategy.

Over the last decades, we have witnessed an increasing interest in food-related products containing vegetable oils. These oils can be obtained either by extraction or by mechanical pressing of different parts of plants (e.g., seeds, fruit, and drupels). Producers of nutraceuticals have ceaselessly searched for unique and effective natural ingredients. The enormous success of argan oil has been followed by discoveries of other interesting vegetable oils (e.g., pomegranate oil) containing several bioactives. This work describes the pomegranate fruit extract and seed oil as a rich source of conjugated linolenic acid as a metabolite of punicic acid (PA), deriving from the omega-5 family (ω-5). Through the chemical characterization of PA, its nutritional and therapeutic properties are highlighted together with the physiological properties that encourage its use in human nutrition. We analyzed the composition of all fatty acids with beneficial properties occurring in pomegranate seed oil using gas chromatography (GC) with flame-ionization detection (FID) analysis combined with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Pomegranate seed oil mainly consists of 9,11,13-octadic-trienoic acid (18:3), corresponding to 73 wt % of the total fatty acids. Nine components were identified by GC in PSO, varying between 0.58 and 73.19 wt %. Using midinfrared (MIR) spectroscopy, we compared the composition of pomegranate seed oil with that of meadowfoam seed oil (MSO), which is also becoming increasingly popular in the food industry due to its high content of long chain fatty acids (C20-22), providing increased oil stability. From the results of FTIR and MIR spectroscopy, we found that punicic acid is unique in PSO (73.19 wt %) but not in MSO.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the causative agent of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Whether SARS-CoV-2 can trigger an autoimmune reaction against platelets and red blood cells remains unclear. Herein, we report a case of COVID-19 pneumonia associated with severe immune thrombocytopenia and hemolytic anemia. An 83-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital because of both dyspnea and diffuse mucocutaneous bleeding. Exams revealed hemolytic anemia (HA), severe immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), and bilateral pneumonia. Molecular testing confirmed a diagnosis of COVID-19 pneumonia. Thrombocytopenia did not respond to first-line treatment with immunoglobulin, corticosteroids, and platelet transfusions. Addition to therapy of the thrombopoietin receptor agonist, eltrombopag, resulted in full recovery. COVID-19 can be associated with ITP and HA. There are neither guidelines nor clinical experience on the treatment of COVID-19-associated ITP and our case, showing complete response to eltrombopag, may help clinicians in their practice during the COVID-19 pandemic. We do not know exactly whether this virus can stimulate our immune system to react against platelets and red blood cells. Herein, we report a case of COVID-19 pneumonia associated with two severe blood diseases, immune thrombocytopenia, which causes platelet destruction, and hemolytic anemia, which causes red cell destruction. An 83-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital because of both difficulty in breathing and diffuse bleeding in mucosae and skin. Exams revealed hemolytic anemia, severe immune thrombocytopenia, and pneumonia in both lungs. Molecular testing confirmed a diagnosis of COVID-19 pneumonia. The first treatment with immunoglobulin, corticosteroids, and platelet transfusions was not enough to cure thrombocytopenia; the addition of eltrombopag which acts on the thrombopoietin receptor agonist resulted in full recovery. COVID-19 can be present together with immune thrombocytopenia and hemolytic anemia. As there are no guidelines on the treatment of immune thrombocytopenia in patients with COVID-19 and the clinical experience is limited, the complete response achieved with eltrombopag may help clinicians in their practice during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This perspective presents current and updated advances in research on nutrients and bioactive compounds in seafood. It is based on a literature quantitative research analysis approach. The main features of seafood components are introduced. This perspective aims at providing a current framework that relates nutrients, bioactive compounds, and seafood in a novel integrated and multidisciplinary manner, highlighting the current knowledge, the main research lines, and emerging strategies. The literature search was carried out by means of the Scopus database, and 22,542 documents were retrieved in the period from 1932 to 2024. Particularly, from the perspective of nutrition and health outputs, the main terms correlated with research on the relationship between seafood and nutritional and bioactive components, and the main existing research lines focused on this topic, were identified. The top recurring keywords were human/s, female, diet, nutrition, fish, male, adult, food intake.

Hemorrhagic cystitis is the main adverse effect associated with the clinical use of oxazaphosphorine, resulting in increased oxidative stress and proinflammatory cytokines, which culminate in injury of the bladder tissue. The aim of this study was to evaluate the protective effect of isopropyl gallate (IPG) against ifosfamide (IFOS)-induced hemorrhagic cystitis in mice. The induction of the hemorrhagic cystitis model was carried out using a single dose of IFOS (400 mg/kg, i.p.) four hours after oral pretreatment with IPG (6.25, 12.5, 25, and 50 mg/kg) or saline (vehicle). Mesna (positive control; 80 mg/kg, i.p.) was administered four hours before and eight hours after induction of cystitis. In the present study, IPG 25 mg/kg significantly decreased edema and hemorrhage, with a reduction of the bladder wet weight (36.86%), hemoglobin content (54.55%), and peritoneal vascular permeability (42.94%) in urinary bladders of mice. Interestingly, IPG increased SOD activity (89.27%) and reduced MDA levels (35.53%), as well as displayed anti-inflammatory activity by decreasing TNF-α (88.77%), IL-1β (62.87%), and C-reactive protein (56.41%) levels. Our findings demonstrate that IPG has a substantial protective role against IFOS-induced hemorrhagic cystitis in mice by enhancing antioxidant activity and proinflammatory mechanisms. Thus, IPG represents a promising co-adjuvant agent in oxazaphosphorine-based chemotherapy treatments.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of oral administration of Platonia insignis Mart. (“bacuri”) seed butter (BSB) on oxidative stress and diabetes mellitus-related parameters in streptozotocin-induced (STZ) diabetic rats. Diabetes mellitus was induced in female Wistar rats (180–250 g) by the intraperitoneal administration of STZ (45 mg/kg, b.w). BSB (25, 50, and 100 mg/kg) was administered to animals for four weeks. The effect on weight gain, food intake, blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin, hepatic transaminases, plasma and liver TBARS and MPO activity, erythrocyte SOD activity, non-protein sulfhydryl groups (SH-NP), and histopathology of the liver tissue was investigated. BSB at the dose of 100 mg/kg had a positive effect on the reduction in glycated hemoglobin percentage and increased albumin concentration, as well as decreased ALT and AST levels and increased SH-NP liver levels in treated animals compared to normal control rats. Moreover, BSB had no effects on weight gain, food intake, and fasting glucose. Thus, the BSB presented marked properties in improvement of hepatic antioxidant defenses, which demonstrates BSB as a potential hepatoprotective agent in metabolic disorders.

The demand for nuclear fuel for research reactors is increasing worldwide. However, some nuclear fuel factories have small production volumes. There is a gap in the literature regarding how to expand capacity of those facilities in a safe and reliable way. Thus, the purpose of this work is to propose and validate a conceptual model to increase the production capacity of these factories. We addressed factories that produce plate-type fuel elements loaded with LEU U3Si2-Al, which are typically used in nuclear research reactors. We collected data from a real nuclear fuel plant and applied the model to that data, i.e., we set up a case study. We developed two different strategies for the use of the model, thus generating several production scenarios. Each scenario is an experiment of the different possibilities to enlarge the capacity. We applied discrete events simulation in order to cover all production scenarios. Our tests indicated significant increases in productive capacity, thus showing that the model has fully achieved its proposed objective. One of the main conclusions that we point out is the model’s effectiveness. That effectiveness was demonstrated by using the model in two different strategies and obtaining increases in capacity with both of them.

The behaviour of high oleic sunflower oil in deep frying process of purple potato Purple Majesty has been evaluated simulating a fast food cooking process. This oil was used for 8h/day for 6 days, filling up from the 2nd day. A discontinuous and prolonged procedure was tested. Free Fatty Acidity (FFA), Peroxide Value (PV), Total Polar Compounds (TPC), Fatty Acid (FA) composition, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) have been determined at different times in thermo-oxidized (T-OX) oil, and in frying oil. The FFA in T-OX oil samples showed values in the range 0.09%–0.24%, whereas in the frying oil values varied in a range between 0.09% and 0.16%. TPCs values varied from 1.76% to 38.24% in T-OX oils, whereas in frying oil used for frying purple potatoes (FOPP) showed values in the range from 1.76 to 29.13%. The peroxides values did not follow a regular pattern, both during thermo-oxidation and during frying. Among the Long Chain Fatty Acids (LCFAs), oleic acid was the most represented (84.13%). Short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) amount was 0.34% (octanoic acid). Medium chain fatty acids (MCFA) amount was 4.45% (palmitic acid). During the thermo-oxidation, the poly-unsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) amount decreased during the 48 h of heat treatment, reaching an amount of 6.21%. This determined the increase in short chain fatty acids (SCFA). Trans fatty acids increased with the frying time. Unsaturated fatty acids (UFA) reached the value of 90.19%; SFA was 9.79%, and octanoic acid was 0.20%. A correlation between TPC vs UFA/SFA and TPC vs C18:2/C16:0 was observed in the frying oil. The most abundant volatile compounds in frying oil (from 0 to 48 h) were the aldehydes produced by decomposition of hydroperoxides of oleic and linoleic acids.

Tocols are present in various foods, mostly in fruits and in plant seeds. Edible oils are the most important natural dietary sources of tocopherols and tocotrienols, collectively known as tocols. Tocopherols and tocotrienols are considered beneficial for their antioxidant effect which impacts on prevention of different health conditions. This perspective is addressed to give an updated picture of the tocol occurrence in foods. Moreover, the current state of the art of tocols in updated databases is explored and commented outlining their importance and future trends.
