Large-ring cyclodextrin (LR-CD) is a cyclic α-1,4-glucan consisting of nine to several hundred glucopyranose units. LR-CD is mainly prepared by the cyclization activity of cyclodextrin glucosyltransferase or 4-α-glucanotransferase that catalyzes intramolecular transglycosylation reaction on amylose. Compared with common α-, β-, and γ-CD, LR-CD has a larger cavity size and exhibits unique structural and physicochemical properties, showing potential applications in several fields like food, medicine and biology. However, LR-CD has not been industrially produced or applied due to the high cost and low productivity as well as lack of effective separation and purification methods. In this article, recent progress and challenges on the enzymatic preparation of LR-CD are reviewed from the aspects of optimizing reaction substrates, designing new reaction pathways based on template induction, enzyme modification, and separation and purification of products. We hope this article could provide a reference for the industrial production and application of LR-CD.

Abstract The food enzyme cyclomaltodextrin glucanotransferase ((1‐4)‐α‐d‐glucan:(1‐4)‐α‐d‐glucan 4‐α‐d‐[(1‐4)‐α‐d‐glucano]‐transferase; EC 2.4.1.19) is produced with the non‐genetically modified bacteria Anoxybacillus caldiproteolyticus strain TCM3‐539 by Hayashibara Co., Ltd. It is free from viable cells of the production strain. The food enzyme is intended to be used for the manufacture of glucosyl hesperidin and ascorbic acid 2‐glucoside. Since residual amounts of total organic solids are removed by filtration, adsorption, chromatography and crystallisation, dietary exposure estimation was considered not necessary. A search for the similarity of the amino acid sequence of the food enzyme to known allergens was made and one match with a respiratory allergen was found. The Panel considered that, under the intended conditions of use, the risk of allergic reactions by dietary exposure cannot be excluded, but the likelihood is low. Based on the data provided, the Panel concluded that the food enzyme does not give rise to safety concerns under the intended conditions of use.

Cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase (CGTase) can catalyze the glycosylation of hesperidin, resulting in α-glycosyl hesperidin with significantly improved water solubility. In this study, a rational design of CGTase to improve its hesperidin glycosylation activity was investigated. The strategy we employed involved docking hesperidin in its near-attack conformation and virtually mutating the surrounding residues, followed by calculating the changes in binding energy using Rosetta flex-ddG. The mutations with a stabilization effect were then subjected to an activity assay. Starting from CGTase-Y217F, we obtained three double-point mutants, Y217F/M351F, Y217F/M351L, and Y217F/D393H, with improved hesperidin glycosylation activities after screening twenty variants. The best variant, Y217F/D393H, exhibited a catalytic activity of 1305 U/g, and its kcat/KmA is 2.36 times higher compared to CGTase-Y217F and 15.14 times higher compared to the wild-type CGTase. Molecular dynamic simulations indicated that hesperidin was repulsed by CGTase-Y217F when bound in a near-attack conformation. However, by introducing a second-point mutation with a stabilization effect, the repulsion effect is weakened, resulting in a reduction in the distances between the bond-forming atoms and, thus, favoring the reaction.

Fisetin is a flavonoid that exhibits high antioxidant activity and is widely employed in the pharmacological industries. However, the application of fisetin is limited due to its low water solubility. In this study, glycoside derivatives of fisetin were synthesized by an enzymatic reaction using cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase (CGTase) from Paenibacillus sp. RB01 in order to improve the water solubility of fisetin. Under optimal conditions, CGTase was able to convert more than 400 mg/L of fisetin to its glycoside derivatives, which is significantly higher than the previous biosynthesis using engineered E. coli. Product characterization by HPLC and LC-MS/MS revealed that the transglycosylated products consisted of at least five fisetin glycoside derivatives, including fisetin mono-, di- and triglucosides, as well as their isomers. Enzymatic analysis by glucoamylase and α-glucosidase showed that these fisetin glycosides were formed by α-1,4-glycosidic linkages. Molecular docking demonstrated that there are two possible binding modes of fisetin in the enzyme active site containing CGTase-glysosyl intermediate, in which O7 and O4’ atoms of fisetin positioned close to the C1 of glycoside donor, corresponding to the isomers of the obtained fisetin monoglucosides. In addition, the water solubility and the antioxidant activity of the fisetin monoglucosides were tested. It was found that their water solubility was increased at least 800 times when compared to that of their parent molecule while still maintaining the antioxidant activity. This study revealed the potential application of CGTase to improve the solubility of flavonoids.

Abstract The food enzyme cyclomaltodextrin glucanotransferase ((1→4)‐α‐d‐glucan 4‐α‐d‐[(1→4)‐α‐d‐glucano]‐transferase (cyclising), EC 2.4.1.19) is produced with Anoxybacillus caldiproteolyticus strain St‐88 by PureCircle USA. It is intended to be used in the manufacture of glycosylated steviol glycosides. Residual amounts of total organic solids are removed by the purification steps applied during the production of the modified steviol glycosides; consequently, dietary exposure was not calculated. For the same reason, toxicological studies other than assessment of allergenicity were not considered necessary. Similarity of the amino acid sequence of the food enzyme to those of known allergens was searched and four matches were found. The Panel considered that, under the intended conditions of use, the risk of allergic sensitisation and elicitation reactions by dietary exposure cannot be excluded, but the likelihood is considered to be low. Based on the data provided, the Panel concluded that this food enzyme does not give rise to safety concerns under the intended conditions of use.

Abstract Background Cyclodextrin glycosyltransferases (CGTases) catalyze the synthesis of cyclodextrins, which are circular α-(1,4)-linked glucans used in many applications in the industries related to food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, chemicals, and agriculture, among others. Economic use of these CGTases, particularly γ-CGTase, requires their efficient production. In this study, the effects of chemical chaperones, temperature and inducers on cell growth and the production of soluble γ-CGTase by Escherichia coli were investigated. Results The yield of soluble γ-CGTase in shake-flask culture approximately doubled when β-cyclodextrin was added to the culture medium as a chemical chaperone. When a modified two-stage feeding strategy incorporating 7.5 mM β-cyclodextrin was used in a 3-L fermenter, a dry cell weight of 70.3 g·L− 1 was achieved. Using this cultivation approach, the total yield of γ-CGTase activity (50.29 U·mL− 1) was 1.71-fold greater than that observed in the absence of β-cyclodextrin (29.33 U·mL− 1). Conclusions Since β-cyclodextrin is inexpensive and nontoxic to microbes, these results suggest its universal application during recombinant protein production. The higher expression of soluble γ-CGTase in a semi-synthetic medium showed the potential of the proposed process for the economical production of many enzymes on an industrial scale.

Abstract The food enzyme cyclomaltodextrin glucanotransferase ((1→4)‐α‐d‐glucan:(1→4)‐α‐d‐glucan 4‐α‐d‐[(1→4)‐α‐d‐glucano]‐transferase; EC 2.4.1.19) is produced with the non‐genetically modified Paenibacillus illinoisenis strain 107 by Hayashibara Co., Ltd. The cyclomaltodextrin glucanotransferase food enzyme is intended to be used solely by the applicant in‐house in starch processing for trehalose production. Since residual amounts of total organic solids (TOS) are removed by the purification steps applied during the production of trehalose, dietary exposure was not calculated. Genotoxicity tests did not raise a safety concern. The systemic toxicity was assessed by means of a repeated dose 90‐day oral toxicity study in rats. The Panel identified a no‐observed‐adverse‐effect level (NOAEL) of 39 mg TOS/kg body weight per day, the highest dose tested. Similarity of the amino acid sequence to those of known allergens was searched and one match was found. The Panel considered that, under the intended condition of use, the risk of allergic sensitisation and elicitation reactions upon dietary exposure cannot be excluded, but the likelihood for such reactions to occur is considered to be low. Based on the data provided, the Panel concluded that this food enzyme does not give rise to safety concerns under the intended conditions of use.

This study was designed to investigate the structure of synthesized hesperidin glycosides (HGs) and evaluate their antibacterial and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities. The preliminary structure of HGs was confirmed by glucoamylase treatment and analyzed on thin layer chromatography (TLC). The LC-MS/MS profiles of HGs showed the important fragments at m/z ratios of 345.21 (added glucose to glucose of rutinose in HG1) and 687.28 (added maltose to glucose of rutinose in HG2), confirming that the structures of HG1 and HG2 were α-glucosyl hesperidin and α-maltosyl hesperidin, respectively. In addition, 1H and 13C-NMR of hesperidin derivatives were performed to identify their α-1,4-glycosidic bonds. The MIC and MBC studies showed that transglycosylated HG1 and HG2 had better antibacterial and bactericidal activities than hesperidin and diosmin, and were more active against Staphylococcus aureus than Escherichia coli. Hesperidin, HG1, HG2, and diosmin inhibited α-glucosidase with IC50 values of 2.75 ± 1.57, 2.48 ± 1.61, 2.36 ± 1.48, and 2.99 ± 1.23 mg/mL, respectively. The inhibition kinetics of HG2 shown by a Lineweaver–Burk plot confirmed HG2 was an α-glucosidase competitive inhibitor with an inhibitor constant, Ki, of 2.20 ± 0.10 mM. Thus, HGs have the potential to be developed into antibacterial drugs and treatments for treating α-glucosidase-associated type 2 diabetes.

Cyclodextrins (CDs) and their derivatives have attracted significant attention in the pharmaceutical, food, and textile industries, which has led to an increased demand for their production. CD is typically produced by the action of cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase (CGTase) on starch. Owing to the relatively high cost of enzymes, the economic feasibility of the entire process strongly depends on the effective retention and recycling of CGTase in the reaction system, while maintaining its stability. CGTase enzymes immobilized on various supports such as porous glass beads or glyoxyl-agarose have been previously used to achieve this objective. Nevertheless, the attachment of biocatalysts on conventional supports is associated with numerous drawbacks, including enzyme leaching prominent in physical adsorption, reduced activity as a result of chemisorption, and increased mass transfer limitations. Recent reports on the successful utilization of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) as supports for various enzymes suggest that CGTase could be immobilized for enhanced production of CDs. The three-dimensional microenvironment of MOFs could maintain the stability of CGTase while posing minimal diffusional limitations. Moreover, the presence of different functional groups on the surfaces of MOFs could provide multiple points for attachment of CGTase, thereby reducing enzyme loss through leaching. The present review focuses on the advantages MOFs can offer as support for CGTase immobilization as well as their potential for application in CD production.

Two optimization strategies, codon usage modification and glycine supplementation, were adopted to improve the extracellular production of Bacillus sp. NR5 UPM β-cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase (CGT-BS) in recombinant Escherichia coli. Several rare codons were eliminated and replaced with the ones favored by E. coli cells, resulting in an increased codon adaptation index (CAI) from 0.67 to 0.78. The cultivation of the codon modified recombinant E. coli following optimization of glycine supplementation enhanced the secretion of β-CGTase activity up to 2.2-fold at 12 h of cultivation as compared to the control. β-CGTase secreted into the culture medium by the transformant reached 65.524 U/mL at post-induction temperature of 37 °C with addition of 1.2 mM glycine and induced at 2 h of cultivation. A 20.1-fold purity of the recombinant β-CGTase was obtained when purified through a combination of diafiltration and nickel-nitrilotriacetic acid (Ni-NTA) affinity chromatography. This combined strategy doubled the extracellular β-CGTase production when compared to the single approach, hence offering the potential of enhancing the expression of extracellular enzymes, particularly β-CGTase by the recombinant E. coli.

The properties of a previously unknown enzyme, denominated cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase, produced from Bacillus lehensis, were evaluated using affinity chromatography for protein purification. Enzyme characteristics (optimum pH and temperature; pH and temperature stability), the influence of substances on the enzyme activity, enzyme kinetics, and cyclodextrin production were analysed. Cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase was purified up to 320.74-fold by affinity chromatography using β-cyclodextrin as the binder and it exhibited 8.71% activity recovery. This enzyme is a monomer with a molecular weight of 81.27 kDa, as estimated by SDS-PAGE. Optimum temperature and pH for cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase were 55°C and 8.0, respectively. The Michaelis-Menten constant was 8.62 g/l during maximum velocity of 0.858 g/l.h.

Ginsenosides from Panax ginseng (Korean ginseng) are unique triterpenoidal saponins that are considered to be responsible for most of the pharmacological activities of P. ginseng. However, the various linkage positions cause different pharmacological activities. In this context, we aimed to synthesize new derivatives of ginsenosides with unusual linkages that show enhanced pharmacological activities. Novel α-glycosylated derivatives of ginsenoside F1 were synthesized from transglycosylation reactions of dextrin (sugar donor) and ginsenoside F1 (acceptor) by the successive actions of Toruzyme®3.0L, a cyclodextrin glucanotransferase. One of the resultant products was isolated and identified as (20S)-3β,6α,12β-trihydroxydammar-24ene-(20-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→2)-α-D-glucopyranoside) by various spectroscopic characterization techniques of fast atom bombardment-mass spectrometry (FAB-MS), infrared spectroscopy (IR), proton-nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR), 13C-NMR, gradient heteronuclear single quantum coherence (gHSQC), and gradient heteronuclear multiple bond coherence (gHMBC). As expected, the novel α-glycosylated ginsenoside F1 (G1-F1) exhibited increased solubility, lower cytotoxicity toward human dermal fibroblast cells (HDF), and higher tyrosinase activity and ultraviolet A (UVA)-induced inhibitory activity against matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) than ginsenoside F1. Since F1 has been reported as an antiaging and antioxidant agent, the enhanced efficacies of the novel α-glycosylated ginsenoside F1 suggest that it might be useful in cosmetic applications after screening.

Screening for cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase (CGTase)-producing alkaliphilic bacteria from samples collected from hyper saline soda lakes (Wadi Natrun Valley, Egypt), resulted in isolation of potent CGTase producing alkaliphilic bacterium, termed NPST-10. 16S rDNA sequence analysis identified the isolate as Amphibacillus sp. CGTase was purified to homogeneity up to 22.1 fold by starch adsorption and anion exchange chromatography with a yield of 44.7%. The purified enzyme was a monomeric protein with an estimated molecular weight of 92 kDa using SDS-PAGE. Catalytic activities of the enzyme were found to be 88.8 U mg−1 protein, 20.0 U mg−1 protein and 11.0 U mg−1 protein for cyclization, coupling and hydrolytic activities, respectively. The enzyme was stable over a wide pH range from pH 5.0 to 11.0, with a maximal activity at pH 8.0. CGTase exhibited activity over a wide temperature range from 45 °C to 70 °C, with maximal activity at 50 °C and was stable at 30 °C to 55 °C for at least 1 h. Thermal stability of the purified enzyme could be significantly improved in the presence of CaCl2. Km and Vmax values were estimated using soluble starch as a substrate to be 1.7 ± 0.15 mg/mL and 100 ± 2.0 μmol/min, respectively. CGTase was significantly inhibited in the presence of Co2+, Zn2+, Cu2+, Hg2+, Ba2+, Cd2+, and 2-mercaptoethanol. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of CGTase production by Amphibacillus sp. The achieved high conversion of insoluble raw corn starch into cyclodextrins (67.2%) with production of mainly β-CD (86.4%), makes Amphibacillus sp. NPST-10 desirable for the cyclodextrin production industry.

The synthesis of a novel α-glucosylated derivative of pterostilbene was performed by a transglycosylation reaction using starch as glucosyl donor, catalyzed by cyclodextrin glucanotransferase (CGTase) from Thermoanaerobacter sp. The reaction was carried out in a buffer containing 20% (v/v) DMSO to enhance the solubility of pterostilbene. Due to the formation of several polyglucosylated products with CGTase, the yield of monoglucoside was increased by the treatment with a recombinant amyloglucosidase (STA1) from Saccharomyces cerevisiae (var. diastaticus). This enzyme was not able to hydrolyze the linkage between the glucose and pterostilbene. The monoglucoside was isolated and characterized by combining ESI-MS and 2D-NMR methods. Pterostilbene α-d-glucopyranoside is a novel compound. The α-glucosylation of pterostilbene enhanced its solubility in water to approximately 0.1 g/L. The α-glucosylation caused a slight loss of antioxidant activity towards ABTS˙+ radicals. Pterostilbene α-d-glucopyranoside was less toxic than pterostilbene for human SH-S5Y5 neurons, MRC5 fibroblasts and HT-29 colon cancer cells, and similar for RAW 264.7 macrophages.

Cyclodextrin glycosyl transferase (CGT-ase) is mainly produced by Bacilli. Systematical name of the enzyme is E.C. 2.4.1.19 a-1,4 glucan-4-glycosyl transferase. The enzyme catalyzes hydrolysis of starch intramolecular, and intermolecular transglycosylation of a-1,4, glucan chains. Cyclodextrins are a-1,4 linked cyclic oligosaccharides resulting from enzymatic degradation of starch by cyclodextrin glycosyl transferase through untramolecular transglycosylation. The major cyclodextrins are made up of 6, 7 and 8 glucopyranose units which are known as a-, b-, and y-cyclodextrin. All CGT-ase catalyze three kinds of cyclodextrins, the proportion of the cyclodextrins depends on the enzyme source and reaction conditions. The intermolecular transglycosylation ability of the enzyme has been applied in transfering glycosyl residues into suitable acceptor. Transglycosylation by the enzymes have been tested to improve solubility of some flavonoids and to favor precipitation ci some glycosides.

Cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase (EC 2.4.1.19, CGTase) production from B. firmus, isolated from soil of Curitiba, PR, was optimized in shake flask using an experimental design approach. The CGTase was produced when the carbon source was starch and beta-CD, but when simple sugars such as glucose, galactose, lactose, sucrose, and maltose were used, there was no enzyme production. CGTase production was the same with either organic nitrogen or inorganic nitrogen source. CGTase activity decreased 2-fold when incubation temperature was increased from 28 to 37 ° C, and decreased 2.1- fold when the initial pH was lowered from 10.3 to 7.4. The colorimetric determinations of alpha - and beta -CD were analyzed as a non-linear relationship and the equilibrium constant for alpha -CD/methyl orange and beta -CD/phenolphthalein complexes were 7.69 x 10³ L / mol and 2.33 x 10³ L/ mol, respectively.A produção de ciclodextrina glicosiltransferase (EC2.4.1.19, CGTase) de B. firmus isolada de solo de Curitiba, PR, foi otimizada com o uso de modelo estatístico fatorial. Foi estudado o efeito de componentes no meio básico bem como pH inicial e temperatura na produção da enzima. O modelo de fatorial 2k-1 foi usado. A atividade da CGTase foi monitorada pelo método colorimétrico com alaranjado de metila. Houve produção da CGTase quando a fonte de carbono era amido e beta-CD, mas quando galactose, lactose, sacarose e maltose foram usadas, nγo houve nenhuma produηγo de enzima. A produηão de CGTase foi a mesma com a fonte de nitrogênio orgânico ou inorgânico. A atividade da CGTase diminuiu 2 vezes quando a temperatura de incubação foi aumentada de 28 a 37 ° C, e diminuiu 2,1 vezes quando o pH inicial foi abaixado de 10,3 a 7,4. As determinações colorimetricas de alfa e beta - CD foram analisadas como regressão não linear e a constante de equilíbrio para os complexos alfa -CD/alaranjado de metila e beta -CD/fenolftaleina foram 7,69 x 10³ L/mol e 2,33 x 10³L/mol, respectivamente.

The production of beta- and gamma -CD by CGTase from Bacillus firmus was studied, in regard to the effect of the source and concentration of starch on the yield of CD and CGTase activity. A cyclic activity of accumulation and consumption of beta -CD and gamma -CD occurred during the bacterial growth. CGTase was more active when citrate buffer, pH 5.5 was used. No differences were found for production of gamma -CD with the use of commercial starch flour when compared with corn starch (p>0.05). The use of commercial starch flour resulted in decreased conversion of starch to beta-CD (all the 4 starch sources were statistically different, pA produção de beta - e gama -CD pela CGTase de Bacillus firmus foi estudada com respeito ao efeito de diferentes fontes e concentrações de amido. A CGTase utilizada neste estudo foi obtida da cepa 31 isolada em estudos anteriores. Foram observadas atividades cíclicas de acúmulo da produção e consumo de beta -CD e gama -CD pela bactéria. A atividade enzimática ensaiada em solução tampão citrato (pH 5,5) foi maior que em solução tampão Tris-HCl (pH 8,5). Não foi observada diferença na produção de gama - CD em diferentes fontes comerciais de amido (milho, mandioca e batata), comparados com amido Sigma (p>0,05). Foram encontradas diferenças para a produção de beta -CD em todas as fontes de amido utilizadas. O uso de féculas de amido comerciais diminuiu a produção de beta -CD comparados com amido Sigma. As concentrações de beta -CD e gama -CD apresentaram uma variação ao longo do tempo, em função da concentração de amido no meio de cultivo (2, 5, 10 e 15%). Nem as diferentes fontes de amido nem as suas diferentes concentrações alteraram a atividade específica da CGTase. A atividade dextrinizante da enzima em presença de ácido glutâmico, complexante de CD, não apresentou diferença significativa em relação ao controle.

One hundred and twenty five soil samples were collected from the regions of roots of corn, cassava, potato, bean, sugar cane, soya, and pumpkin. From these, 75 strains were isolated that produced a yellowish halo surrounding the colonies, due to a phenolphtalein-cyclodextrin (CD) complex, and these were selected as alkalophilic CGTase-producing bacteria. All the 75 strains were identified as Bacillus firmus by microscopy and biochemical tests. The activity of the CGTase's varied from 2² to 2(10) dilutions,when assayed by CD-trichloroethylene (TCE)-complex precipitation. Strain 31 that produced the enzyme at the higher level was selected, and its enzyme was partially purified by starch adsorption (x 17) in a yield of 51%. Maximum enzyme activity occurred at pH 5.5 and 8.5. At pH 5.5, the optimum temperature was 60°C. On increased from 30°C to 85°C, the thermodynamic parameter for activation energy was 8.27 kcal.mol-1. The enzyme was inhibited by Ca2+, Mg2+, Fe2+, Cu2+, Mn2+, and Zn2+.Foram coletadas 125 amostras de solo de raízes de milho, mandioca, batata, feijão, cana-de-açúcar, soja e abóbora. Destas, 75 cepas foram isoladas por desenvolverem um halo amarelo ao redor das colônias, devido a formação do complexo fenoftaleína-ciclodextrina (CD) sendo selecionadas como bactérias alcalofílicas produtoras de CGTase (EC 2.4.1.19).Todas as 75 cepas foram identificadas como Bacillus firmus por microscopia e testes bioquímicos. Quando ensaiada por precipitação com tricloroetileno a atividade da CGTase variou de diluição de 2² a 2(10). A cepa 31 foi selecionada devido a elevada produção de enzima, sendo esta parcialmente purificada por adsorção em amido (17 vezes) com uma recuperação de 51%. A máxima atividade enzimática ocorreu em pH 5,5 e 8,5. Em pH 5,5, a temperatura ótima foi de 60° C. Sob o aumento de 30° C a 85° C, o parâmetro de energia de ativação foi de 8,27 kcal.mol-1. A enzima foi inibida por Ca2+, Mg2+, Fe2+, Cu2+, Mn2+ e Zn2+.

Glycoside hydrolases (GH) are enzymes capable to hydrolyze the glycosidic bond between two carbohydrates or even between a carbohydrate and a non-carbohydrate moiety. Because of the increasing interest for industrial applications of these enzymes, the immobilization of GH has become an important development in order to improve its activity, stability, as well as the possibility of its reuse in batch reactions and in continuous processes. In this review, we focus on the broad aspects of immobilization of enzymes from the specific GH families. A brief introduction on methods of enzyme immobilization is presented, discussing some advantages and drawbacks of this technology. We then review the state of the art of enzyme immobilization of families GH1, GH13, and GH70, with special attention on the enzymes β-glucosidase, α-amylase, cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase, and dextransucrase. In each case, the immobilization protocols are evaluated considering their positive and negative aspects. Finally, the perspectives on new immobilization methods are briefly presented.

ABSTRACT In the present work, different Brazilian biomes aiming to identify and select cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase-producer bacteria are explored. This enzyme is responsible for converting starch to cyclodextrin, which are interesting molecules to carry other substances of economic interest applied by textile, pharmaceutical, food, and other industries. Based on the enzymatic index, 12 bacteria were selected and evaluated, considering their capacity to produce the enzyme in culture media containing different starch sources. It was observed that the highest yields were presented by the bacteria when grown in cornstarch. These bacteria were also characterized by sequencing of the 16S rRNA region and were classified as Bacillus, Paenibacillus, Gracilibacillus and Solibacillus.
