This study aimed to compare the effect of intranasal (IN) and intramuscular (IM) administration of butorphanol and zolazepam‐tiletamine (ZT) combination on intraocular pressure (IOP) and tear secretion (TS) in rabbits. Fourteen healthy male New Zealand White rabbits weighing 3.05 ± 0.72 kg, aged between 1 and 2 years old, were included in the study. Animals randomly received 0.5 mg/kg butorphanol and 15 mg/kg ZT combination either with IN or IM administration. IOP and TS were measured at baseline (T0), and followed by 5, 15, 30, 45, and 60 min after drug administration. The sedation variables, the time to onset of sedation, duration of sedation, and sedation scores were also recorded. The route of administration for the butorphanol and ZT combination had no significant effect on the mean IOP (p =.301) and TS (p =.445). Furthermore, there were no significant changes observed in the IOP (p =.472) and TS (p =.348) over time. The time to onset of sedation was earlier in the IN group (4.57 ± 0.79 min) than in the IM group (5.86 ± 0.9 min; p =.0004). The duration of sedation was significantly longer for IM (57.43 ± 3.41 min) compared with IN (45.0 ± 1.91 min; p <.0001). No significant difference in the sedation score was observed between groups at all time points. The aim of the study is to assess the lacrimal gland tear production, using the Schirmer Tear Test (STT), in healthy sheep under general anesthesia and to explore the effects of applying 1% hyaluronic acid ophthalmic gel during general anesthesia. While STT values during anesthesia have been well documented in small animals such as cats and dogs, there seems to be a lack of information available for ruminants like sheep. This gap in the literature highlights the need for further research and exploration into tear production in sheep under anesthesia. The experimental research conducted on twelve adults female sheep provided valuable insights into tear production under anesthesia. By assessing tear production at various key time points the study was able to capture the changes in tear production throughout anesthesia and revealed a significant decrease in Schirmer Tear Test values in all sheep, following general anesthesia. The results showed that closing and taping the eye yielded determined better outcomes compared to administering a 1% lubricant ophthalmic gel. Background: We evaluate the relationship between corneal nerve structure and function in a veteran population. Methods: 83 veterans (mean age: 55 ± 5 years) seen at the Miami Veterans Affairs (VA) eye clinic were included in this study. Each individual filled out questionnaires to evaluate ocular symptoms (5-Item Dry Eye Questionnaire, DEQ5; Ocular Surface Disease Index, OSDI) and ocular pain (Numerical Rating Scale, NRS; Neuropathic Pain Symptom Inventory modified for the Eye, NPSI-Eye). The individuals also underwent an ocular surface examination that captured functional nerve tests including corneal sensation, corneal staining, and the Schirmer test for tear production. Corneal sub-basal nerve analysis was conducted using in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) images with corneal nerve density, length, area, width, and fractal dimension captured. IVCM and functional corneal metrics from the right eye were examined using correlational and linear regression analysis. Results: Most corneal structural metrics were not related to functional metrics, except for weak correlations between various IVCM metrics and tear production. In addition, corneal nerve fiber area was positively related to corneal sensation (r = 0.3, p = 0.01). On linear regression analyses, only the corneal fractal dimension remained significantly related to tear production (β = −0.26, p = 0.02) and only the corneal nerve fiber area remained significantly related to corneal sensation (β = 0.3, p = 0.01). Conclusions: Most corneal nerve structural metrics did not relate to functional metrics in our veteran population, apart from a few weak correlations between structural metrics and tear production. Purpose: At present, drug treatments are composing the majority of dry eye therapies. However, considering the side effects of drugs, there has been increasing interest in novel non-drug treatment options, and these new treatments have been researching ways of tear production. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the role of chewing gum on tear-meniscus parameters and blinking rate with objective and quantitative methods. Methods: Sixty eyes of 30 healthy volunteers' tear-meniscus height (TMH), tear-meniscus depth (TMD), and tear-meniscus area (TMA) were acquired with anterior segment-optical coherence tomography. Tear-meniscus measurements were performed before and during chewing gum; at 15 and 30 min. Blinking rates were also recorded both before and during chewing gum for 5 min. Results: TMH, TMD, and TMA values at 15 and 30 min of chewing gum were significantly higher than those values before chewing gum (p<0.001). TMH, TMD, and TMA values at 15 min of chewing gum were similar to those values at 30 min of chewing gum (p>0.05). Blinking rate during chewing gum was significantly higher than that value before chewing gum (p<0.001). Conclusion: To the best of our knowledge, this was the first study demonstrating that chewing gum increased tear-meniscus parameters and blinking rate at acute phase of chewing with objective, quantitative, and non-invasive methods. Chewing gum is cheap, sustainable, and easy to reach. In addition, it is not a drug, and there is no risk of drug-related side effects. Background: We aimed to check the efficacy of Emustil (oil in water emulsion) drops on tear film index and ocular surface dynamics in dry environments through protection and relief treatment modalities. Methods: The subjects were exposed to a dry environment using a Controlled Environment Chamber (CEC) where the relative humidity (RH) was 5% and the temperature was 21 °C and screened for ocular symptoms, tear osmolarity, ocular surface temperature (OST) and tear production using ocular Surface Disease Index questionnaire (OSDI), OcuSense TearLab Osmometer, FLIR System ThermaCAM P620 and Schirmer strips/phenol red test respectively. Tear production was calculated by the Tear Function Index test (TFI). Results: The mean tear film osmolarity decreased significantly from 296.8 mOsm/l at 40% RH to 291 mOsm/l at 5%. (p = 0.01). Instillation of Emustil resulted in a significant increase in tear osmolarity in the relief method compared with osmolarity seen at 5% RH when no drop was used. The mean PRT value decreased from 26 ± 9 in normal conditions (40% RH) to 22 ± 4 mm in dry conditions (5% RH). Emustil drops did not induce any significant change in tear production in the PRT test. No significant change was found in OST following exposure to 5% RH. OST did not show a statistically significant change with the emulsion when used for relief (p > 0.05). The mean score of ocular discomfort observed was 70 at 5% RH. Still, the instillation of the oil-in-water emulsion (Emustil) resulted in a noticeable decrease in visual discomfort to 37 (p = 0.00) in protection and 59 in relief (p = 0.05). Emustil drops substantially improved tear film parameters under a desiccating environment, however, tear film parameters respond differently to the management modalities. In the protection method, tear film osmolarity was protected against a dry environment, while in the relief mode, tear production was improved. Conclusion: CEC allows for a thorough evaluation of tear film parameters and dry eye treatment protocols in labs, providing greater confidence when applying them to patients. In addition, our study showed that Emustil not only provides protection and relief for dry eyes but also helps to maintain ocular homeostasis in desiccating environments. Simple Summary: Normal values of tear production (STT) and intraocular pressure (IOP) are important values resulting from ophthalmic examinations in animals, but so far there are no data from conscious red deer. The establishment of reference value ranges specific to conscious animals may be useful to institutions in settings where chemical immobilization is not necessary for the examination of the species. A total of 60 red deer were examined in this study. Both eyes of all red deer underwent a complete ophthalmic examination, including evaluation of tear production with the Schirmer tear test and IOP readings. The mean ± standard deviation of STT values were 18.35 ± 4.54 mm/30 s in the right eye and 17.87 ± 4.12 mm/30 s in the left; for both eyes, 18.11 ± 4.33 mm/30 s, with a reference range of 17.33–18.89 mm/30 s. IOP was as follows: 26.96 ± 4.42 mmHg in the right eye and 26.67 ± 3.80 mmHg in the left; for both eyes, 26.81 ± 4.11 mmHg, with a reference range of 26.07–27.55 mm/30 s. No statistically significant differences were found between the right and left eye in terms of IOP and STT values. This study provides the normal range for STT and IOP in healthy red deer. It demonstrates that STT is a practical method for determining tear production, and rebound tonometry is a practical method for evaluating IOP in ophthalmic examinations of deer. Aim: This study aimed to assess the efficacy of hp-guar eye drops on tear film index and ocular surface dynamics under desiccating conditions using protection and relief treatment modalities. Methodology: The 12 normal, non-dry eye participants were subjected to adverse environmental conditions using a Controlled Environment Chamber (CEC) where the relative humidity (RH) was 5% and the ambient temperature was 21 °C. The participants were screened for ocular symptoms, tear osmolarity, ocular surface temperature (OST), tear production using the Ocular Surface Disease Index questionnaire (OSDI), OcuSense TearLab Osmometer, FLIR System ThermaCAM P620, and Schirmer strips. Tear production was calculated by the Tear Function Index test (TFI). Results: The mean tear film osmolarity decreased significantly from 296 mOsm/L at 40% RH to 285 mOsm/L at 5% RH (p = 0.01). Conflicting responses were seen for osmolarity in protection and relief. Mean tear osmolarity was significantly higher in the protection method in comparison to the relief method (p = 0.005). The mean TFI increased from 557 at 40% to 854 at 5% (p = 0.02). A significant increase in TFI was observed in the relief method in comparison with both 40% (p = 0.001) and 5% (p = 0.04). In the relief method, the mean TFI score went up to 1139 when hp-guar was installed. A significant improvement in ocular comfort was experienced in both the protection (p = 0.041) and relief (p = 0.010) methods at 5% RH. The instillation of hp-guar drops in the relief method resulted in a significant reduction in OST. The mean OST dropped to 33.01 ºC, significantly lower than the recorded OST for both normal (p = 0.040) and dry (p = 0.014) environmental conditions. Conclusion: Hp-guar drops significantly improve tear film parameters under a desiccating environment, however, tear film parameters respond differently to the management modalities. In the protection method, tear film osmolarity was protected against a dry environment, while in the relief mode, an improvement in tear production and a decrease in ocular surface temperature were seen. Hp-guar performance could be maximized for the management of exposure to adverse environments by using a treatment protocol that targets the most affected parameters in each group of patients. Simple Summary: In veterinary medicine, the use of sedative agents to perform clinical and diagnostic procedures is increasingly common. Several anesthetic drugs decrease tear flow production. In recent years, interest in the clinical efficacy of sedative and hypnotic agents for new and atraumatic routes of administration has increased. Tear film production has never been investigated in cats who received sedative agents by the intrarectal route (IR). The aim of this study is to compare the clinical effects of a mixture of dexmedetomidine, ketamine and midazolam on tear film flow administered by the IR versus the intramuscular route (IM). Cats are often easily stressed and uncooperative. The use of sedative agents in the feline species is widely used to perform even minor clinical and diagnostic procedures. The aim of this study is to assess the impact on tear film production of the intrarectal route (IR) administration of a mixture of dexmedetomidine, ketamine and midazolam in comparison with the intramuscular (IM) one. A group of twenty cats were involved in a randomized and blinded clinical trial. A clinical and ophthalmological examination was conducted on the cats. The IR group received dexmedetomidine 0.003 mg kg−1, ketamine 4 mg kg−1 and midazolam 0.4 mg kg−1; the IM group received dexmedetomidine 0.003 mg kg−1, ketamine 2 mg kg−1 and midazolam 0.2 mg kg−1. A Shirmer tear test I (STT- I) was conducted 1 h before sedation and 2′, 10′, 20′, 30′, 40′, and 80′ post drug administration. The reaction to STT-I administration was also evaluated. The IM group has a lower mean tear production than the IR group for all time points evaluated. Cats in the IM group showed less reaction to STT-I administration. This study may suggest that the effect of sedative agents administered by the IR route has a lower incidence on tear production than the IM one. The use of eye lubricant is recommended in any case. Background: According to the literature review, this is the first study investigating tear production (TP) and intraocular pressure (IOP) in the Pygoscelis penguins living in their natural habitat. The study aimed to establish normal values for standard ocular tests in the genus Pygoscelis, namely, the Adélie (Pygoscelis adeliae), gentoo (Pygoscelis papua), and chinstrap (Pygoscelis antarctica) penguins, in four different islands of Antarctica. Sampling was made by specifically using the left eye of the penguins. The Schirmer's tear test type I (STT-I) and the Tonovet® (rebound tonometer) were used to measure the TP and the IOP, respectively. Results: The mean TP and IOP values of 129 Adélie, chinstrap, gentoo, and 120 adult Adélie, gentoo penguins were determined as 10.2 ± 4.0 mm/min and 38.9 ± 13.2 mmHg, respectively. No statistical difference was detected between the penguin species for the mean IOP values, while the difference was determined in all the locations. However, statistical differences in the mean TP values were determined between all locations. Conclusion: The results of this study provide a reference range of Schirmer's tear test (STT) and IOP values in Pygoscelis penguins and show that the IOP is significantly affected by locations. This result can be attributed to the harsh climatic conditions of the Antarctic Peninsula that change very quickly. The described data may help diagnose clinical pathological findings in Pygoscelis penguins. The STT and rebound tonometry appears to be safe and reproducible methods in Pygoscelis penguins, as the results were obtained quickly and were well tolerated by the birds. Based on our results, we propose that similar studies can be initiated in crowded colonies of three penguin species of this genus on the Antarctic Peninsula, the southern Shetland Islands, and other frequently visited islands in Antarctica. Background: Herpetic stromal keratitis (HSK) is an immunomodulatory disease that develops as a result of herpes simplex virus (HSV)1 or HSV2 reactivation. HSK is the most common form (20-50%) of recurrent herpetic keratitis (HK) that most commonly results in significantly reduced vision. It is well known that changes in biological compound levels in tear fluid can be indicative of the state of the ocular surface and determine whether ocular surface pathology is present, and, therefore, can be used as diagnostic markers of pathological changes in the ocular surface. Lactoferrin (LF) is one of these compounds and has been proven to have innate antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antiparasite, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, antioxidative and other properties. Purpose: To determine tear Lf concentration in patients with recurrent acute HSK, its effect on functional characteristics of the ocular surface, and the therapeutic effect of Lacto eyedrops in the comprehensive treatment for this disorder. Material and Methods: The study was conducted at the site of Corneal Pathology Department and Immunology Laboratory of the Institute in January to December 2021. Seventeen patients (17 affected eyes and 17 fellow eyes) with recurrent acute HSK were included in the study. Mean patient age plus or minus standard deviation (SD) was 48.7 ± 16.0 years. The ophthalmological examination included biomicroscopy of the bulbar conjunctiva and cornea, fluorescein test, determination of corneal sensation and basal tear production (Schirmer's II test), and microbiological examination of the conjunctiva. Tear Lf concentration was determined by a human Lf enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit (Elabscience Biotechnology, Inc., Wuhan, China). The results were photometrically measured at 450 nm with an ELISA reader (Stat Fax 2100, Awareness Technology Inc, Palm City, FL). Lacto eyedrops were administered two times a day for 30 days. Tear Lf concentrations were determined at baseline and at day 30. Results: Mean tear LF concentration plus or minus SD in eyes of patients with recurrent HSK was 1.21 ± 0.52 g/l, with no significant difference between the affected eye and fellow eye. However, a subnormal tear LF concentration was more common in the affected eye than in the fellow eye (X² = 4.24, p = 0.04). After a 30-day anti-inflammatory treatment with Lacto eyedrops, mean tear LF concentration plus or minus SD increased by 47% to 1.78 ± 0.7 g/l in the affected eyes. A corneal sensation score of 1 to 9 was 12.4 times more common in HSK eyes than in fellow eyes (OR = 12.4; 95% CI, 2.0-76.8), which reflects neurosensory abnormalities in the affected eye. Corneal sensation loss, was, however, more common in HSK eyes with a low tear Lf concentration than in fellow eyes with a low tear Lf concentration. Median basal tear production (as assessed by Schirmer's II test) was as low as 7-8 mm in eyes with a low tear Lf concentration and as high as 13-16 mm in eyes with a high tear Lf concentration (p < 0.05). There was a direct correlation between the basal tear production and the tear Lf concentration (r=0.45; p < 0.05). Among study patients with recurrent HSK, 24.9% showed baseline microbiological evidence of potentially pathogenic or fungal organisms in the conjunctiva. A course of multicomponent anti-inflammatory treatment with Lacto eyedrops contributed to complete removal of these organisms. Conclusion: We determined mean tear Lf concentrations in affected and fellow eyes of patients with recurrent HSK, and established certain relationships between functional characteristics of the ocular surface and tear Lf concentrations in these eyes. A disinfecting effect of Lacto eyedrops against any microorganisms present in the conjunctival sac of patients with recurrent HSK was confirmed by the absence of culture growth on completion of the multicomponent anti-inflammatory treatment. Purpose: Ophthalmic diagnosis in many avian species remains hindered by a lack of normative values. This study aimed to establish normal ophthalmic parameters for select diagnostic tests in clinically normal Quaker parrots. Methods: Ninety‐six captive Quaker parrots aged 8–18 years underwent ophthalmic examination to include assessment of neuro‐ophthalmic reflexes, phenol red thread test, rebound tonometry, fluorescein staining, palpebral fissure length measurements, slit lamp biomicroscopy, indirect ophthalmoscopy, and ocular ultrasound biometry. Results: Menace response, dazzle reflex, and direct pupillary light reflex were present for all Quaker parrots. Tear production (mean ± SD) was 13.3 ± 4.0 mm/15 s and intraocular pressure (IOP, mean ± SD) was 10.6 ± 1.4 and 6.0 ± 1.3 mmHg in the D and P rebound tonometer calibration settings, respectively. For IOP measurement, D and P calibration settings were not interchangeable, with the lesser variation of the D setting preferred in the absence of a gold standard. Ultrasound measurement of the anterior chamber depth increased with age and males had longer axial globe and vitreous lengths. Incidental adnexal and ocular lesions, identified in 36/96 (37.5%) of Quaker parrots, did not statistically affect the created reference data. Conclusions: This work provides reference values and clinical findings to assist with monitoring the health of wild populations and maintaining the health of captive Quaker parrots. Contact lenses are becoming more and more popular. Today, a contact lens is a high-tech biocompatible device capable of retaining moisture and allowing oxygen to reach the cornea, thereby preventing complications. But contact lenses are a medical product and wearing them is associated with certain risks. The work reveals some mechanisms of the occurrence of contact lens-related complications, presents the classification of general and metabolic complications. Complications of the epithelial, stromal and endothelial layers of the cornea are described. Characteristics of infectious and allergic complications of the eye surface are presented. Variants of mechanical damage to the surface of the eye by contact lenses are described. Recommendations for the treatment and prevention of contact lens-related complications are provided. Objective: To evaluate the relationship between lacrimation and age in a homogeneous group of healthy beagle dogs during the first year of life. Materials and methods: Schirmer tear test I (STT I) was performed at an interval of 12–15 days in both eyes of 16 clinically healthy beagle dogs (eight males and eight females) from 94 to 361 days of age. Three different quadratic polynomial regression equations were estimated for the variation in lacrimation: (1) for the entire period (19 observations), (2) for observations 1–4 (days 94–136), and (3) for observations 5–19 (days 150–361). Results: By fitting quadratic regression equations to different phases of tear production during the dog's first year of life, it was possible to see that with each day of life, lacrimation increased 0.08 times (8%). From days 94 to 136, however, lacrimal production fell 1.1 times with each day of life. From day 150 to 361, production increased by 0.02 (2%) each day of life. In addition, there was a positive significant and moderate linear correlation between body weight and STT I values (p =.01). Conclusion: In dogs, during the first year of life, STT I data distribution is parabolic in shape. Age significantly affected tear production. STT I decreased at approximately 108–121 days of age and increased thereafter. Body weight was a significant factor for STT I in young dogs. We herein report a 76-year-old male who presented to the ophthalmology clinic after complaining from excessive lacrimation for ~6 months prior to presentation. He reports previously undergoing a nasolacrimal recanalization procedure in attempts to resolve his symptoms, but reported no improvement. On examination, a mass on the nasal conjunctiva around the medial canthus of the right eye was noted and subsequently excised. The findings support the diagnosis of low-grade follicular lymphoma. The patient was referred to radiation oncology for radiation therapy and received a total dose of 2400 cGy. Most ocular adnexal lymphomas are B-cell in origin, with follicular lymphomas being one of the rarest forms of such lymphomas. The most common translocation reported in over 85% of follicular lymphomas of the ocular adnexa is t(14; 18) (q32; q21). Objective: To describe normative ocular surface and aqueous tear testing data for cats of various cephalic conformation. Animals studied: Fifty‐three healthy adult cats (11 British Shorthair, 11 Burmese, 10 Devon Rex, 10 Scottish Fold, and 11 Sphynx). Procedures: Blink rate, corneal tactile sensation (CTS), and Schirmer tear test with or without topical anesthesia (STT‐1, STT‐2) and with nasolacrimal stimulation (NL‐STT1, NL‐STT2) were assessed. Palpebral fissure length (PFL) and skull morphology were measured, and cephalic index (CI) and craniofacial ratio (CFR) calculated. Results: Mean ± SD test results were as follows: blink rate (5.0 ± 2.3 blinks/min), CTS (3.2 ± 0.7 cm), STT‐1 (11.2 ± 4.3 mm/min), STT‐2 (6.7 ± 3.6 mm/min), NL‐STT1 (13.4 ± 5.7 mm/min), NL‐STT2 (13.5 ± 5.2 mm/min), and PFL (2.0 ± 0.2 cm). Corneal sensitivity did not differ significantly among breeds (p =.152) but was negatively correlated with body weight (r = −.32, p =.019). STT‐1 significantly differed among breeds (p <.001) and was lowest in Sphynx cats (8.7 ± 4.3 mm/min). A positive correlation was detected between STT‐1 values at 30 and 60 s (r =.98; p <.001). The nasolacrimal reflex significantly increased STT in anesthetized and unanesthetized eyes (approximately +100% and +20%, respectively; p ≤.002). STT‐1 tended to be higher in intact versus neutered cats (p =.062). Age did not impact any test result (p ≥.085). Conclusions: Normative data described here serve as a baseline for future studies assessing ocular surface disease in multiple feline breeds. Objective: To characterize the ocular surface parameters and determine the prevalence of ocular pathology in Shih Tzu dogs. Animal Studied: Fifty Shih Tzu dogs (28 male, 22 female). Procedures: Each dog underwent a complete ophthalmic examination (recording any pathology) and a series of diagnostics, allowing for a 10 min‐interval between tests: intraocular pressure (IOP), blink rate, palpebral fissure length (PFL), corneal tactile sensation (CTS), Schirmer tear test and nasolacrimal reflex without (STT‐1, NL‐STT1) and with topical anesthesia (STT‐2, NL‐STT2), tear ferning, strip meniscometry test (SMT), tear film breakup time (TFBUT), and punctate fluorescein staining (PFS) of the cornea. Results: Mean ± SD test values were as follows: IOP (17.9 ± 3.7 mmHg), blink rate (2.4 ± 1.4 blinks/min), PFL (23.8 ± 1.8 mm), CTS (1.8 ± 0.7 cm), STT‐1 (22.0 ± 5.5 mm/min), NL‐STT1 (24.2 ± 4.7 mm/min), STT‐2 (16.9 ± 6.5 mm/min), NL‐STT2 (18.5 ± 7.5 mm/min), SMT (7.5 ± 3.5 mm/5 s), TFBUT (5.3 ± 2.4 s), tear ferning (1.3 ± 0.7), and PFS (1.6 ± 0.6). PFL was significantly greater in male vs. female Shih Tzus (p<.001). Age was negatively correlated with TFBUT results (r = −0.31, p =.027). Lagophthalmos was observed in 82% eyes. Ocular surface pathology was common, including adnexal abnormalities (100% eyes with caruncular trichiasis and medial lower lid entropion) and corneal opacification (27% pigmentation, 20% fibrosis, 12% neovascularization). Conclusions: Qualitative tear film deficiency (low TFBUT), along with several anatomical abnormalities that promote ocular irritation and reduce globe protection, together help explain the concerningly high prevalence of ocular surface disease in the Shih Tzu breed. Background: The orbital glands, viz. lacrimal gland, superficial and deep gland of third eyelid (LG, SGT and HG), are important for normal eye functions. These glands have different functions in various animals. The information about the enzyme histochemical nature of prenatal orbital glands in Indian buffalo seems to be unavailable. Therefore, the study was planned on orbital glands of six full term recently died fetuses from animals with dystocia. Methods: The frozen sections of all these glands were subjected to standard localization protocols for Alkaline Phosphatase (AKPase), Glucose 6 phosphatase (G-6-Pase), Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), Succinate dehydrogenase (SDH), Glucose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD), Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide Hydrogen Diaphorase (NADHD), Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide Phosphate Hydrogen diaphorase (NADPHD), Dihydroxy phenylalanine oxidase (DOPA-O), Tyrosinase, non-specific esterase (NSE) and Carbonic anhydrase (CAse). Results: The results revealed a mixed spectrum of reaction for the above enzymes in LG, SGT and HG which ranged from moderate (for LDH in SGT) to intense (for most of the enzymes in all three glands). However, DOPA-O, Tyrosinase and CAse did not show any reaction. From the present study, it can be postulated that the orbital glands of fetus have a high activity of metabolism as it has many developmental and functional activities which were mediated with the higher activity of the enzymes involved. Background: Keratitis is a common cause of eye diseases in horses, often resulting in complete loss of vision. Aim: The purpose of this article is to study the features of the clinical picture of primary and secondary keratitis in horses, depending on the form of the course of the disease. Methods: The study was conducted in 2019 at 22 private horse breeding farms. The study involved 80 horses with keratitis, which were divided into two equal groups depending on the diagnosis of primary or secondary keratitis. Results: The effectiveness of the therapies was compared 1, 3, and 6 months after the start of treatment. Following a 1-month therapy, only a minority of horses with primary keratitis had their eye functions fully restored, the number of horses with macula was two times higher (p = 0.05), the number of horses with nebula was seven times higher (p = 0.001), and leukomas were reported in most of the cases (p = 0.0001). Conclusion: The effectiveness of the therapy for keratitis is directly related to the peculiarities of treatment and adherence to the regimen. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The objective of the present study was to examine the effect of different light intensities on tear production, corneal thickness, and intraocular pressure in broilers. Animals studied: Both eyes of 72 male broilers were evaluated in this study. Materials and Methods: Broilers were divided into the following three groups: low light intensity (n = 24, 5 lux), moderate light intensity (n = 24, 20 lux), and high light intensity (n = 24, 80 lux). The eyes of all birds (n = 72) underwent a complete ophthalmic examination, which included the Schirmer tear test (STT‐I), intraocular pressure (IOP), and the central cornea thickness measurement (CCT). The effect of light intensity on the Schirmer test, intraocular pressure, and central corneal thickness values was examined at eye and animal level (right and left eyes separately and cumulatively/no distinguishing left or right) by using one‐way ANOVA. Results: At the animal level, without discrimination of left and right eye measurements, statistically significant differences were found between 5–20 and 20–80 lux groups on IOP measurements (p <.05). The difference in CCT measurements between the 5 and 20 lux groups was statistically significant (p <.05), and the corneal thickness of the 5 lux group animals was found to be statistically significant and higher than the 20 lux group (p <.05). Conclusions: In conclusion, light intensity has an influence on eye health in broilers. Purpose: To evaluate OC-01 [varenicline solution nasal spray (VNS)] tear production and symptom outcomes in patients with dry eye disease by age, gender, race, ethnicity, and artificial tear use status. Patients and Methods: Adults ≥ 22 years of age diagnosed with dry eye disease, with Ocular Surface Disease Index score ≥ 23, corneal fluorescein staining score ≥ 2 in ≥ 1 region or ≥ 4 for all regions, and baseline Schirmer Test Score (STS) ≤ 10 mm, with no restrictions on eye dryness score (EDS). Efficacy was assessed using integrated data from ONSET-1 and ONSET-2 [vehicle control (VC), n=294; OC-01 VNS 0.03 mg, n=308]. Subgroups included age (≤ 55, 56− 65, > 65 years), gender (male, female), race (White, Black or African American), ethnicity (Hispanic or Latino, Not Hispanic or Latino), and artificial tear use (yes, no). Analysis of covariance models, with the covariates treatment, study site, and baseline severity measures, were used to calculate treatment−VC differences. Consistency of effect among subgroups was evaluated by conducting interaction tests. Results: Consistency of treatment effect across subgroups was observed for all endpoints, with P value for all treatment−subgroup interaction terms > 0.05. For % of patients with ≥ 10mm improvement in STS and least squares (LS) mean change from baseline in STS and EDS, there was improvement in tear production across demographic group categories. Artificial tear use did not change STS or EDS outcomes with OC-01 VNS. Conclusion: OC-01 VNS improved tear production and patient-reported symptom outcomes across a broad range of patients by age, gender, race, and ethnicity, and regardless of artificial tear use status at baseline. Impaired tear production – a common sign of keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) – is associated with qualitative or quantitative tear deficiency. OTX-101 0.09% is a novel, nanomicellar formulation of cyclosporine A approved in the US for increasing tear production in patients with KCS. We present a pooled analysis of the phase 2b/3 and phase 3 studies evaluating the effect of OTX-101 on tear production in a subgroup of patients with keratoconjunctivitis sicca with severely impaired tear production (Schirmer's score <5 mm in either eye at baseline). In these randomized, double-masked studies, patients instilled 1 drop OTX-101 or vehicle per eye twice daily for 84 days. Pooled efficacy endpoints included percent (%) of patients with ≥10 mm change from baseline and mean change from baseline in Schirmer's score at day 84. Pooled safety endpoints included adverse event monitoring. Subgroup analyses included 133 and 113 patients receiving OTX-101 and vehicle, respectively. Mean baseline (BL) Schirmer's score ± standard deviation was 2.7 ± 1.2 for OTX-101 and 2.5 ± 1.1 mm for vehicle (P =.3203). On day 84, number (%) of patients with ≥10 mm Schirmer's score change from baseline was 30 (22.6%) and 12 (10.6%, P =.0168); mean change from baseline ± standard deviation was 5.5 ± 8.0 and 3.6 (6.0, P =.0405) mm for OTX-101 and vehicle, respectively. Adverse events were mostly mild and did not require treatment. Objective: Evaluate the effect of repeated doses of topical 1% cyclopentolate hydrochloride alone and in combination with topical 2.5% phenylephrine on pupil diameter (PD), tear production (STT‐1), intraocular pressure (IOP), digestive function (gut motility and feces production), and heart rate (HR). Animal studied: Six healthy mares. Procedures: In a prospective, randomized, controlled, and crossover design study, the left eye of six healthy mares was administered 0.2 mL of cyclopentolate alone and in combination with 0.2 mL of phenylephrine. The drugs were administered 3 times a day for 1 day, twice a day for 1 day, and then once a day for 2 days, as commonly used in practice. Daily and two days after the last topical drug administration, HR, digestive auscultation, feces production, STT‐1, IOP, and PD were recorded. Results: The cyclopentolate alone significantly increased the horizontal and vertical PD of the treated eye from day 2 to day 6 (p <.0001) compared with the baseline value. The combination with topical phenylephrine did not have any additional effect on mydriasis compare with the cyclopentolate alone. The other ocular and digestive parameters were not affected by repeated doses of cyclopentolate alone or combined. Conclusions: Repeated administration of cyclopentolate alone or combined with phenylephrine induce a significant mydriasis for at least 48 h after the last administration in normal horses' eyes, and do not affect STT‐1, IOP, digestive function, and HR. Purpose: To assess the efficacy and safety of an intranasal tear neurostimulator (ITN) device in Sjögren syndrome (SS) patients. Methods: This was a two-visit prospective, randomized, controlled, same-day crossover study in participants with SS. Inclusion criteria were assessed at a baseline screening visit and included an Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) score ≥ 13, and a Schirmer with anesthesia ≤ 10 mm/5 min (in at least one eye), with a cotton swab stimulation induced increase of ≥ 4 mm in the same eye. Participants returned for the application visit, where they received intranasal and extranasal applications of the ITN in random sequence, separated by at least 60 min. Schirmer scores were measured in both eyes after each application and compared to baseline values. Generalized linear models were performed to compare the change in Schirmer scores from baseline, and generalized estimating equations were used to account for correlations from repeated measurements in the same eye and measurements from two eyes of the same patient. Results: Fifty-five participants were screened and 35 were enrolled (all female), ranging in age from 31 to 72 years (mean, 57 years). The baseline OSDI score ranged from 14 to 91 (mean, 50.5), and the baseline Schirmer score had a mean (SD) of 6.4 (3.5) ranging from 0 to 20 (mm/5min). Improvement in Schirmer scores was significantly greater for intranasal device application (13.5 mm/5min, 95% CI: 10.4, 16.5) compared to extranasal device application (0.8mm/5min, 95% CI: − 0.9, 2.4) (p< 0.0001). The effects of the intranasal device application were significant regardless of the participant's baseline Schirmer score and systemic SS medication usage (p< 0.05). Conclusion: Intranasal application of the ITN device significantly increased tear production in a subset of SS patients compared to baseline and was more effective than extranasal application. While production of the ITN device was recently discontinued, our findings suggest that other therapies that neurostimulate the lacrimal function unit may be effective in a subset of SS patients. Background: Investigation of the pathogenesis of dry eye disease (DED) in corneal and conjunctival cicatrization secondary to severe burns to the eye as well as optimization of the management of this condition is an important and relevant task of clinical ophthalmology. Purpose: To optimize the management of DED in corneal and conjunctival cicatrization secondary to severe burns to the eye on the basis of tear production studies. Material and Methods: Forty patients (60 eyes) with DED and corneal and conjunctival cicatrization secondary to severe burns to the eye and showing various reductions in Schirmer test 1 scores were included in the study. Tear substitutes (Tear Naturale; Alcon, Fort Worth, TX) or Vidisic® gel (Mann Pharma, Berlin, Germany) were administered four times a day for eyes with mild or moderate dry eye, and six times a day for eyes with severe dry eye, and tear production was assessed at 2 weeks and at 3 months. Results: At two weeks, among the eyes treated with Vidisic gel, Schirmer test score improved from 12 mm to 13 mm (p > 0.05) for eyes with mild dry eye, from 6.5 mm to 8.4 mm for eyes with moderate dry eye, and from 3.1 mm to 6.3 mm for eyes with severe dry eye. In addition, among the eyes treated with teas substitutes, Schirmer test score improved from 11 mm to 13 mm for eyes with mild dry eye, from 6.1 mm to 8.1 mm for eyes with moderate dry eye, and from 2.6 mm to 4.4 mm for eyes with severe dry eye (p < 0.05). At three months, patients who were taking their medication as per schedule had approximately the same scores as at two weeks, whereas those who discontinued taking their medication or were taking it irregularly had approximately the same scores as at baseline. The maintenance of corneal and normal eye function is necessary for the ocular health and integrity. Tear plays an important role in defense mechanism and nutrition of eye. The Schirmer tear tests (STT I, II) are widely used in ophthalmic examination to evaluate tear production as an aid to diagnose eye diseases. The aim of this study was to compare the different effect of anesthetic combinations and their action period on tear production in healthy rabbits. Forty healthy New Zealand female rabbits (mean weight 2.34 ± 0.67 kg), four months old, were used as materials. The animals were divided into four groups as propofol + sevoflurane (PS), midazolam + sevoflurane (MS), medetomidine + ketamine + sevoflurane (MKS), and control (C) groups, and each group contained 10 rabbits. The TP (tear production) was measured from left eyes before injectable anesthesia (0. min), during sevoflurane anesthesia at 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th and 30th min, and post anesthesia (after extubation) at 10th, 20th, 30th, 60th, 120th min and 24 h after in the study groups. In group C, at the same time intervals TP were also measured. In all groups statistical differences were recorded in different times of during and post anesthesia time periods. In post anesthetic time intervals the lowest TP values were detected in PS group. The new surgical techniques on eye surgery can require long general anesthesia periods. Extending of general anesthesia duration bring along risk factors such as perioperative dry eye syndrome. Perioperative dry eye syndrome (PDES) is the most common ophthalmologic complication of the general anesthesia. As a result of this study, PS anesthetic combination decreased the TP more than MS and MKS anesthetic combination during anesthesia. The general anesthesia or sedation reduces both the tear production and the stability of tear film that protect corneal surface, predisposing itself to the exposure keratopathy. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of intramuscular dexmedetomidine (DEX) on canine tear production, measured by standardized Schirmer Tear Test 1 (STT-1) strips, for the 8 h following sedation, in dogs. A significant effect of time on canine tear production was found, highlighting that dexmedetomidine sedative protocol significantly affects tear production in dogs. It is recommended to treat the canine eyes with tear substitutes to protect ocular surface health and the welfare of the dogs. The ocular lubrication should be performed during and up to 12 h after sedation. The present report could provide preliminary information to better understand the effect of DEX on the tear film dynamics. Tear film provides lubrication and protection to the ocular surface. The sedation reduces tear production, often leading to perioperative exposure keratopathy. The aim of the present study was to report the effects of intramuscular dexmedetomidine on canine tear production, measured by STT-1, for an experimental period of 8 h after sedation. Ten dogs who underwent sedation for routine radiologic assessment were recruited for the study. In all animals, tear production in right and left eyes was measured 15 min before sedation (T0: basal values) and 20 min (T20), 1 h (T1), 2 h (T2), 4 h (T4) and 8 h (T8) after drug administration. Analysis of variance and post hoc Bonferroni test (p < 0.05) were performed. A significant effect of time on canine tear production was found. The tear production returned to basal values at T8. Introduction: Cyclosporine ophthalmic solution 0.09% (CsA 0.09% sol) is approved to increase tear production in patients with keratoconjunctivitis sicca. This study evaluated the efficacy of CsA 0.09% sol vs cyclosporine ophthalmic emulsion 0.05% (CsA 0.05% eml) vs ciclosporin ophthalmic emulsion 0.1% (CsA 0.1% eml) in a NOD mice model. Methods: Mice were randomized and administered placebo, CsA 0.09% sol twice daily, CsA 0.05% eml twice daily, CsA 0.09% sol once daily, or CsA 0.1% eml once daily in the conjunctival sac of both eyes for 60 days. Tear volume was measured with phenol red threads at baseline and 4 hours after treatment every 15 days. On day 58, the corneal surface was observed under a slit-lamp after staining with 3% lissamine green administered into the inferior lateral conjunctival sac. On day 61, mice were euthanized, globes excised, sliced into 4 μm sections in 3 areas per section, and stained. Total number of stained goblet cell/μm was counted, and the sum per eye was averaged. Lacrimal gland tissues were removed and interleukin (IL) 1-β cytokine levels estimated. Results: Groups comprised 11 mice each, including an untreated normal and untreated diseased control group (7 groups total). CsA 0.09% sol twice daily significantly increased tear volume on day 30, 45, and 60 vs CsA 0.05% eml (P< 0.05, < 0.001, < 0.001, respectively) and vs CsA 0.1% eml on day 60 (P< 0.05); CsA 0.09% sol once daily significantly increased tear volume on day 45 vs CsA 0.05% eml (P< 0.05). Goblet cell density significantly increased with CsA 0.09% sol twice daily vs placebo and NOD control (P< 0.01 both). There was no significant difference in corneal staining and IL-1β levels with CsA 0.09% sol. Conclusion: Sixty-day treatment with CsA 0.09% sol showed comparatively improved preclinical results vs CsA 0.05% eml and CsA 0.1% eml. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To investigate the effects of acute conjunctivitis on tear film characteristics and corneal sensitivity in dogs. Animals studied: Eight female spayed Beagle dogs (1.5‐2 years old, 7.5‐10 kg). Procedures: On two consecutive days, one randomly selected eye in each dog received 1 or 375 mg/mL histamine solution to induce mild or severe conjunctivitis, while the contralateral eye served as control. Diagnostic tests were performed in the following order: fluorescein instillation and repeated tear collection over 20 minutes (to determine tear volume [TV] and turnover rate [TTR] by fluorophotometry), Schirmer tear test‐1 (STT‐1), tear ferning, corneal esthesiometry, and tear film breakup time (TFBUT). Results: Results are presented as median values for severe conjunctivitis, mild conjunctivitis, and control eyes. Eyes with severe conjunctivitis had significantly higher STT‐1 (24, 19.5, 17.5 mm/min; P =.002) and significantly lower TFBUT (10.5, 13.5, 15.5 s; P =.002), but no changes were noted in corneal tactile sensation (2, 2.5, 2.5 cm) or tear ferning (grades 2, 2, 2.5). Severe conjunctivitis significantly increased TV by nearly 10‐fold (631, 97, 65 µL) initially (reflex tearing), although basal TV returned rapidly (<5 minutes) in all eyes (46, 58, 48 µL). Finally, there was a nonsignificant trend for higher reflex TTR in the conjunctivitis vs control eyes (68, 58, 43%/min). Conclusions: Experimentally induced conjunctivitis increases tear quantity and decreases tear quality in dogs, but has no impact on corneal sensitivity. Changes in tear film dynamics could affect ocular pharmacology (eg, precorneal retention time), although homeostasis of lacrimal volume and drainage is rapidly restored. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: To document ophthalmic findings, Schirmer's tear test I (STT), and intraocular pressure (IOP) values for anesthetized chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes). Animals Studied: Ten captive chimpanzees from Zoo Knoxville and Chattanooga Zoo. Procedures: Ten chimpanzees were anesthetized for annual physical examinations, blood collection, and ophthalmic examination. Each was anesthetized with intramuscular (IM) injections of dexmedetomidine, midazolam, and ketamine. Ophthalmic findings and STT and IOP values in addition to general health information were recorded for each chimpanzee. Pupillary diameter was measured after topical tropicamide administration. A Shapiro‐Wilk test of normality was done for age, weight, STT values, IOP values, and pupil size. Results: Ages ranged from 11 to 42 years. Weight range was 40.9‐83.6 kg. The mean STT was 13.4 ± 5.3 mm/min. The mean IOP was 14 ± 4.2 mm Hg. Seven of the 10 chimpanzees were considered geriatric, and each had perilimbal lipid deposits. Sedative‐associated miosis was successfully counteracted with a regimen of repeated applications of tropicamide, enabling complete fundic examination. Objective: To characterize diagnostic findings, test-retest repeatability, and correlations among lacrimal tests in dogs of diverse cephalic conformations. Animal studied: Fifty healthy dogs (25 brachycephalic, 25 nonbrachycephalic). Procedures: A series of diagnostics were performed in each dog, allowing for a 10-minute interval between tests and repeating each test 24 hours later under similar conditions: corneal tactile sensation (CTS), strip meniscometry test (SMT), phenol red thread test (PRTT), endodontic absorbent paper point tear test (EAPPTT), Schirmer tear test-1 without (STT-1) or with nasolacrimal stimulation (NL-STT1), and Schirmer tear test-2 (STT-2). Results: Mean ± SD test values were lower in brachycephalic vs. nonbrachycephalic dogs (except for SMT; 7.4 ± 2.0 mm/5 seconds vs 7.3 ± 2.4 mm/5 seconds), with statistically significant differences noted for CTS (1.8 ± 0.5 cm vs 3.4 ± 0.8 cm), PRTT (37.2 ± 4.0 mm/15 seconds vs 41.1 ± 5.5 mm/15 seconds), STT-1 (20.1 ± 3.4 mm/min vs 23.3 ± 5.7 mm/min), STT-2 (13.0 ± 3.4 mm/min vs 16.9 ± 3.9 mm/min), and NL-STT1 (23.2 ± 3.6 mm/min vs 27.1 ± 5.4 mm/min), and nonsignificant differences for EAPPTT (16.6 ± 2.7 mm/15 seconds vs 17.5 ± 2.9 mm/15 seconds). Nasolacrimal stimulation increased STT-1 values by 18% on average. Correlations among tests were generally weak to moderate (r < .70) except for a strong correlation between STT-1 and NL-STT1 (r = .83, P < .001). Test reliability was good although test-retest repeatability was generally poor to moderate, as depicted by low intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC = 0.75) and wide 95% limits of agreement, except for CTS (ICC = 0.91). Conclusions: Corneal sensitivity and aqueous tear secretion are lower in brachycephalic dogs. A comprehensive assessment of the ocular surface requires the combination of several diagnostic tests. Objectives: To evaluate the ameliorative effect of Dendrobium officinale Kimura et Migo (DO) on a desiccated environment-induced experimental dry eye rat model and elucidate its underlying mechanisms. Materials and Methods: The Sprague-Dawley rats were kept in low-humidity environment and received constant airflow for 8 weeks to establish the experimental dry eye model. DO water extract (DOW, 372 mg/kg/day) was orally administered daily for 8 weeks. Schirmer's test was used to measure the tear fluid production at days 0, 14, 28, 42, and 56. At the end of experiment, lacrimal gland tissues and eyeballs were collected for hematoxylin and eosin staining, PAS staining, and immunohistochemical staining. Inflammatory cytokines in conjunctiva including tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), IL-6, and matrix metalloproteinase 9 were measured by real-time PCR. The aquaporin 5 (AQP5) expression in lacrimal gland was also determined using Western blot assay. Results: DOW treatment (DOWT) increased the tear production of rats significantly in the desiccated environment at day 42. Histological analysis revealed that DOW could reverse destruction of conjunctiva and increase goblet cell number and mucin expression in the experimental dry eye rats. In dry eye rats, desiccated environment and constant airflow induced TNF-α and IL-1β production in the conjunctiva, whereas DOWT reversed the upregulation of proinflammatory cytokines. Moreover, DOWT increased the expression of AQP5 at protein level in the lacrimal gland tissues in both desiccated and normal environmental conditions. Conclusion: The present study suggests that DO has therapeutic potential on dry eye symptoms through upregulating AQP5 expression, increasing tear production, inhibiting conjunctiva destruction and inflammation, as well as promoting mucin production. Background: Cyclopentolate is not commonly used as mydriatic drug in veterinary medicine because of limited data on the local and systemic effects in animals. Aim: To determine the effects of topical 1% cyclopentolate hydrochloride on intraocular pressure (IOP), horizontal pupil diameter (HPD) and tear production in the cat and rabbit's eye during the first hour and up to 36 hours after treatment. Methods: One drop of 1% cyclopentolate hydrochloride was used in the left eye in 10 clinically and ophthalmologically healthy domestic cats and 10 rabbits. IOP and HPD were recorded every 5 minutes during the first hour, then every 2 hours during the following 12-hour period, and at 24 and 36 hours after application. Schirmer tear test (STT) was measured at 30 and 60 minute after treatment, then in same time points as IOP and HPD. Rebound tonometer (TonoVet®) was used to assess IOP, Jameson calliper to measure HPD and STT to determine the tear production. Results: 1% cyclopentolate increased IOP in cats, reaching a maximum (28.1 ± 5.4 mmHg) at T50 and in rabbits at T25 (16.7 ± 1.3 mmHg). Maximal mydriasis in cats was observed at T40 and lasted 24-36 hours, but in rabbits at T25, and returned to pre-treatment values at T10h-T12h. In cats, STT decreased in both eyes 30 minutes after treatment and remained lower throughout the 36-hour period. In rabbits, STT decreased in the treated eye 30 minutes after treatment, but all following STT measurements returned to normal pre-treatment levels. Conclusion: Study showed novel data about the effects of 1% cyclopentolate to IOP, HPD, STT in cats and rabbits. Cyclopentolate in cats caused mydriasis 20-40 minutes after the treatment by increasing IOP, at the same time, pupil diameter reached pre-treatment values 24-36 hours after treatment. In rabbit's mydriasis occurred faster, 10-25 minutes after treatment without significant IOP increase and mydriasis lasted 10-12 hours. Significant STT decrease was recorded in cats, but more likely were connected to stress factors. This drug could be considered as a therapeutical alternative in rabbit more than in cats. Objective: To evaluate the tear production, intraocular pressure, and central corneal thickness in healthy white‐tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and assess for seasonal variability. Animals studied: Nineteen healthy fawns (3‐10 days old) and 8 healthy adult white‐tailed deer (164‐280 days old) were studied. Procedures: All fawns were manually restrained for the study, while adult animals were immobilized with an intramuscular injection of combined xylazine (2.2 mg/kg), tiletamine (1 mg/kg), and zolazepam (1 mg/kg). Tear production (STT‐1) was evaluated in both eyes of all fawns. Intraocular pressure (applanation and rebound tonometry) and central corneal thickness (ultrasound pachymetry) were determined in both eyes of all fawns and adult deer. Results: Mean ± SD tear production in fawns was 12.32 ± 4.46 mm/min. Mean ± SD IOP values in the fawns were 16.21 ± 4.97 mm Hg (TonoPen®) and 14.05 ± 5.03 mm Hg (TonoVet®). In adult deer, mean ± SD IOP values were 15.57 ± 2.88 mm Hg with TonoPen® and 12.87 ± 2.57 with TonoVet®, and TonoPen® significantly overestimated the IOP, compared to TonoVet® (P < 0.005). The IOP was not significantly different between young and adult animals (P = 0.22). A significant difference (P < 0.005) in CCT values was observed between fawns (528.42 ± 27.65 μm) and adult deer (747.55 ± 41.60 μm). Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine if a circadian rhythm exists in Schirmer's tear test (STT‐1) values in a group of healthy adult cats. Animals studied: Twenty adult neutered Domestic Short‐haired cats (DSH) were used in the study. Procedures: Tear production was measured with the Schirmer tear test (STT‐1) at 12 different time points over a 48‐hour period. Results: A significant difference (approximately 4.3 mm/min) was noted between STT‐1 values measured between 4 pm (lowest) and 12 am (highest) on both day 1 (P = 0.02) and day 2 (P = 0.01), and substantial variation in STT‐1 values was observed at different times during the 48‐hour period. Conclusions: Significant variation in mean STT‐1 values demonstrates that there is a circadian rhythm in tear production in cats and thus shows the importance of taking the time of day into account when measuring STT‐1 in cats. Total dry eye is encountered less frequently, but it may lead to blindness. Transposition of parotid duct to the conjunctival cul-de-sac is a method of treatment for advanced cases of xerophthalmia to prevent blindness. Tears and parotid secretions have similar composition; therefore saliva provides an excellent replacement for tears. Limitation of this procedure is that the length of the parotid duct may not be adequate to reach the conjunctival cul-de-sac. This study was conducted in 30 fresh cadavers to assess the length of parotid duct and technical feasibility of parotid duct transposition for the treatment of dry eye. The parotid duct was dissected and resting length of parotid duct was measured on both sides without stretching. The distance between ear lobule to lateral canthus was also measured on both sides in each cadaver. The length of parotid duct ranges from 4.5 to 7 cm with average length was 5.8 cm. The majority of the cadavers had parotid duct length of 6 cm. Length of the right and left parotid duct was found to be equal in all cadavers. Parotid duct reached comfortably in 24 cadavers (80%) while it was short in 6 cadavers (20%) by 1-1.50 cm in length. Parotid duct can be transposed easily to the lower conjunctival cul-de-sac in majority of the cases. Background: Dry eye disease (DED) is a prevalent complication of diabetes and presents as reduced tear production and/or increased corneal surface sensitivity often with secondary ocular surface changes. This study examined the safety and efficacy of a proprietary new eye drop formulation for topical treatment of DED.Methods: Type 1 diabetes (T1D) was established in male Sprague-Dawley rats to study the efficacy and safety of the investigational compound that contained 20 μg/ml of naltrexone (NTX). Tear production was measured by the Schirmer's 1 test, and ocular surface sensitivity was measured using an aesthesiometer. Diabetic rats received twice daily applications of a single drop (~ 0.02 ml) of the proprietary formulation (NTX-001) or vehicle onto one eye. For comparison, some diabetic rats received eye drops containing NTX in sterile Vigamox®. Safety was monitored by assessment of ocular histopathology in naïve male rats and naïve male rabbits receiving twice daily treatment of two drops for 30 days.Results: Dry eye in T1D rats was reversed within hours of a single treatment of NTX-001, and over a period of 10 days NTX-001 restored corneal sensitivity and reversed dry eye relative to values measured in diabetic rats receiving vehicle. In comparison to NTX dissolved in Vigamox®, the proprietary NTX-001 was more effective at reversing dry eye. Safety studies in naïve rats and rabbits revealed no visible ocular pathology after 30 days of treatment.Conclusions: An investigational new eye drop containing 20 μg/ml NTX effectively reversed tear film deficits and restored corneal surface sensitivity in diabetic animals without causing toxic side effects. Abstract: Normal values for intraocular pressure (IOP) and tear production in conscious cervids have not been reported to date. Based on trends in zoological institutions to perform non‐anaesthetized health exams, it is applicable to establish normal values in conscious animals, as anaesthesia and sedation can alter these parameters. The goal of this study was to estimate intraocular pressures using rebound tonometry and measure tear production values in a group of healthy, conscious, European fallow deer utilizing chute restraint. Evaluation of these values with regards to instrumentation and restraint variables will be assessed. Complete ophthalmic examinations, including estimation of IOP with rebound tonometry and measurement of tear production with Schirmer tear tests (STT) were performed on nine conscious European fallow deer (Dama dama) restrained in a chute. Correlations between IOP on the unspecified (P) and the equine (H) settings, as well as IOP and STT differences between left (OS) and right (OD) eyes were evaluated, in addition to assessment of correlations between right and left lateral recumbency on IOP and STT. Tear production measurements were 18.7 ± 5.1 mm min−1 with a 95% confidence interval (CI) range of 16.4–21.1 mm min−1. Intraocular pressure measurements for the P setting were 16.1 ± 4.5 mmHg with a 95% CI range of 14.1–18.2 mmHg, and for the H setting were 21.5 ± 5.1 mmHg with a 95% CI range of 19.1–23.9 mmHg. No statistically significant difference (P > 0.05) was found between OS and OD in any test. Neither left nor right lateral recumbency was found to have a statistically significant effect on IOP or STT. The objective of this study was to determine the normal range of tear production and values of intraocular pressure (IOP) in clinically normal eyes of whooper swans (Cygnus cygnus). A total of 86 birds: 81 cygnets (6-10 weeks old) and 5 moulting - adult swans (3-6 years old) were examined in this study. Both eyes of all birds underwent a complete ophthalmic examination, including evaluation of tear production with the phenol red thread test (PRTT) and the assessment of the IOP by rebound tonometry, employing the TonoVet® device. The mean ± standard deviation of PRTT values were as follows: all cygnets (81) 22.59±3.48 mm/15s, male cygnets (45) 22.64±3.54 mm/15s, female cygnets (36) 22.53±3.44 mm/15s. IOP was as follows: all cygnets 11.30±3.55 mmHg, male cygnets 10.93±3.56 mmHg, female cygnets 11.74±3.50 mmHg. No statistically significant differences between right and left eye and between female and male cygnets were found for IOP and PRTT values. This study provides the reference values for the PRTT and IOP in healthy whooper swan cygnets, showing that PRTT determination of the tear production and rebound tonometry to evaluate the IOP methods are practical methods for ophthalmic examination in swans. The aim of this study is to determine the amount of tear secretion in sheep with infectious keratoconjunctivitis and healthy ones in the Siirt region by Schirmer tear test and phenol red thread tear test. A total of 47 Romanov sheep, consisting of sheep with infectious keratoconjunctivitis (n = 6) and healthy sheep (n = 41), constituted the study material. Phenol red thread tear test followed by Schirmer tear test was performed on both eyes of the animals, properly taken at a control visit on their feet. The Schirmer tear test and phenol red thread tear test values were measured as 18.83 ± 5.29 mm/min and 22.22 ± 6.09 mm/s in the right eyes and 18.41 ± 7.15 mm/ min and 20.83 ± 5.72 mm/s in the left eyes, respectively, in healthy animals. The Schirmer tear test and phenol red thread tear test values were measured as 17.33 ± 4.27 mm/min and 18.83 ± 4.36 mm/s in the right eyes and 17.33 ± 7.55 mm/min and 20.17 ± 4.58 mm/s in the left eyes, respectively, in animals with infectious keratoconjunctivitis. The phenol red thread tear test measurement averages were found to be significantly higher than the Schirmer tear test measurement averages (P > 0.05). The amount of normal tear secretion was determined in Romanov breed sheep by the phenol red thread tear test and Schirmer tear test and there was no statistically significant difference in animals with infectious keratoconjunctivitis (P > 0.05). The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between clinical signs and symptoms of dry eye disease (DED) in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). This cross-sectional observational study included 19 SSc patients and 19 normal subjects with no ocular symptoms or ocular surface disorders. Clinical parameters included tear film break-up time (tBUT), Schirmer I, lissamine green (LG) dye, and tear film osmolarity tests, tear production, and tear secretion flow. For assessment of the dry eye symptoms, the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire was administered to all patients. The following mean values were found in SSc patients: OSDI 33.6 ± 19.86; osmolarity of the tear fluid 310.8 mOsmol/l ± 14.47; tBUT time 5.158 ± 2.328 s; Schirmer I test 5.395 mm/5 min; LG grading score 2.026 ± 0.8893; collected tear fluid volume 6.397 ± 2.761 µl. The calculated average tear velocity was 4.654 ± 1.963 µl/min. A significant correlation was found between the OSDI as a subjective parameter and disease duration. Early recognition of dry eye symptoms, a possible extra-intestinal manifestation of SSc, should be included in the check up of the disease to reduce ocular complications. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of seasons on the signs and symptoms of dry eye disease (DED). Methods: This is a cross-sectional, case-control study, and participants were non-DED subjects (n=1,916, mean age 54.4±14.4 years) and DED patients (n=684, 54.2±12.1 years) visiting six eye clinics at various practices and locations in Japan. We evaluated the signs and symptoms of DED and the seasons with the most severe results were compared to those with the least severe results in both groups. Main outcome measures were differences in the severity of the signs and symptoms of DED between the most and least severe seasons. Results: The majority of DED symptoms were most severe during spring and least severe in summer. Significant differences between these two seasons were found for irritation (P=0.001), pain (P=0.007), blurring (P=0.000), and photophobia (P=0.007) in the DED group. Superficial punctate keratopathy (P=0.001) and tear break-up time (BUT; P=0.000) results also indicated that DED was most severe in spring. In contrast, fewer patients had low Schirmer test results in spring, although this was not statistically significant (P=0.061). Conclusion: Our results demonstrated that the severity of DED is seasonal, which may explain the increase of short BUT-type DED cases observed in spring when air pollen counts are highest. This study aimed to evaluate changes in lacrimation and intraocular pressure (IOP) in dogs with unilateral corneal ulceration using the Schirmer tear test (STT) and rebound (TonoVet®) tonometry. IOP and STT values were recorded in both ulcerated and non-ulcerated (control) eyes of 100 dogs diagnosed with unilateral corneal ulceration. Dogs presented with other ocular conditions as their primary complaint were excluded from this study. The mean ± standard deviation for STT values in the ulcerated and control eyes were 20.2±4.6 mm/min and 16.7±3.5 mm/min respectively. The mean ± standard deviation for IOP in the ulcerated and control eyes were 11.9±3.1 mmHg and 16.7±2.6 mmHg respectively. STT values were significantly higher (p<0.000001) in the ulcerated eye compared to the control eye while IOP was significantly lower (p<0.0001). There is an increase in lacrimation and a decrease in IOP in canine eyes with corneal ulceration. The higher tear production in ulcerated eyes shows the importance of measuring STT in both eyes in cases of corneal ulceration, since this increased lacrimation may mask an underlying keratoconjunctivitis sicca only evident in the contralateral eye. The lower IOP in ulcerated eyes is likely to relate to mild uveitic change in the ulcerated eye with a concomitant increase in uveoscleral aqueous drainage. While these changes in tear production and IOP in ulcerated eyes are widely recognised in both human and veterinary ophthalmology, it appears that this is the first controlled documented report of these changes in a large number of individuals. Objectives The purpose of this study was to establish a reference value of tear production and intraocular pressure in clinically normal ducks and geese. Animal Studied The study population consisted of forty-eight ducks (24 males and 24 females) and fifty-two geese (26 males and 26 females). Procedures Birds were gently physically restrained in dorsoventral position without any pressure to the head and neck. Tear secretion and intraocular pressure were measured using 5-mm-wide Schirmer tear test strips and TonoVet® rebound tonometer, respectively. Results Overall mean ± 2 SD STT and IOP values of all eyes were 6.2 ± 2.2 mm/min and 10.2 ± 2.2 mmHg, respectively, for the ducks; 5.5 ± 2.6 mm/min and 9.1 ± 2.0 mmHg, respectively, for the geese. There was no statistically significant difference in IOP between left eye and right eye or between males and females in ducks ( P = 0.56, P = 0.63) and geese ( P = 0.23, P = 0.22). Analysis of variance revealed that there were no significant differences in the STT and IOP between the breeds in ducks ( P = 0.49, P = 0.68) and geese ( P = 0.14, P = 0.26). Conclusions Results of this study may be beneficial for the diagnosis and therapeutic monitoring of ducks and geese affected with Keratoconjunctivitis sicca, glaucoma, and uveitis. This study was performed in order to investigate the correlation between duration of gas anaesthesia with isoflurane and the reduction of tear production in geriatric patients. The study was conducted on 15 dogs (8 males and 7 females, ages between 9 and 14 years old) that were presented at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest between September - October 2016. Preanesthetic examination was performed according to ASA status (American Society of Anesthesiologists). Patients premedication was made with Midazolam 0.2 mg/kg and Butorphanol 0.2 mg/kg injected intramuscularly (IM) or intravenously (IV). All dogs were intubated, induction was made with Propofol 4-6 mg/kg IV and maintenance was performed with Isoflurane. All patients had Schirmer Tear Test (STT) readings taken prior to intubation and immediately after the isoflurane was turned off. All dogs that were under isoflurane anaesthesia for less than 30 minutes had a slight reduction of tear production compared with those that exceeded 30 minutes in which it was noticed a drastic decrease in tear production. From the total of 15 dogs: 3 dogs that were under isoflurane anaesthesia for less than 30 minutes had a final STT of 15 mm/min +/- 3 mm/min compared with those in which anaesthesia time exceeded 30-40 minutes where the final STT was 5 +/- 3 mm/min. Objective To determine the effects of short-term oral administration of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole on tear production in clinically normal guinea pigs. Animal studied Thirty-two healthy adult Abyssinian guinea pigs were used in this study. Procedure One day before the start of the trial, the pretreatment baseline phenol red thread test ( PRTT) values were recorded. Sixteen guinea pigs in the treated group received 25 mg/kg trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole orally twice a day for 14 days. The other sixteen guinea pigs were used as untreated controls and received a placebo during the study. All the ophthalmic tests were performed without chemical restraint. PRTT values were evaluated in both eyes of all the guinea pigs using a commercial PRTT strip of a single lot number on days 0 (baseline), 15, and 21 after starting the trial. Results The pretreatment baseline mean ± SD PRTT values for the treatment and control groups were 11.12 ± 3.82 mm/15 s and 11.93 ± 2.73 mm/15 s, respectively. After 14 days of drug administration, the mean ± SD PRTT values for the treatment and control groups were 10.87 ± 3.11 mm/15 s and 13.00 ± 2.47 mm/15 s, respectively. On Day 21, the mean ± SD PRTT values for the treatment and control groups were 12.62 ± 4.05 mm/15 s and 12.87 ± 2.99 mm/15 s, respectively. Significant decreases in the PRTT values, compared with the pretreatment baseline values, were not observed in the treatment group on Day 15 ( P = 0.14) and Day 21 ( P = 0.31). Background: Dry eye disease (DED), a chronic disorder affecting the tear film and lacrimal functional unit, is a widely prevalent condition associated with significant burden and unmet treatment needs. Since specific neural circuits play an important role in maintaining ocular surface health, microelectrical stimulation of these pathways could present a promising new approach to treating DED. This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of nasal electrical stimulation in patients with DED. Methods: This prospective, open-label, single-arm, nonrandomized pilot study included 40 patients with mild to severe DED. After undergoing two screening visits, enrolled subjects were provided with a nasal stimulation device and instructed to use it at home four times daily (or more often as needed). Follow-up assessments were conducted up to day 180. The primary efficacy endpoint was the difference between unstimulated and stimulated tear production quantified by Schirmer scores. Additional efficacy endpoints included change from baseline in corneal and conjunctival staining, symptoms evaluated on a Visual Analog Scale, and Ocular Surface Disease Index scores. Safety parameters included adverse event (AE) rates, visual acuity, intraocular pressure, slit-lamp biomicroscopy, indirect ophthalmoscopy, and endoscopic nasal examinations. Results: Mean stimulated Schirmer scores were significantly higher than the unstimulated scores at all visits, and corneal and conjunctival staining and symptom scores from baseline to day 180 were significantly reduced. No serious device-related AEs and nine nonserious AEs (three device-related) were reported. Intraocular pressure remained stable and most subjects showed little or no change in visual acuity at days 30 and 180. No significant findings from other clinical examinations were noted. Background: Dry eye is characterized by decreased tear production and/or increased evaporation rates of the tear film barrier. Allergic rhinitis is an inflammatory disease that develops through immunoglobulin E in the rhino-ocular mucosa due to allergens. To investigate the prevalence of allergic rhinitis symptoms and positive skin-prick test results in patients with dry eye. Methods: This is a case-control study. The study included 57 patients with dry eye and 48 healthy subjects. The prevalence of allergic symptoms and skin-prick test results were assessed and compared with the control group. Results: With regard to positive reactions to allergens in skin-prick tests, Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus allergy (p = 0.0003), Dermatophagoides farinae allergy (p = 0.0003), grass-mix allergy (p = 0.049), Salicaces allergy (p = 0.006), and Compositae allergy (p = 0.019) were significantly observed to be higher in the group with dry eye. Nasal obstruction (p = 0.027), discharge (p = 0.0001), sneeze (p = 0.0003), itching (p = 0.0001), and postnasal drainage (p = 0.001) symptoms were observed to be significantly higher in the group with dry eye. Conclusions: Our study revealed that there was a significant association between dry eye and allergic rhinitis with positive skin-prick test results. Objective To describe Schirmer tear test I and rebound tonometry findings in healthy bovine calves. Animals studied Thirty-three clinically normal dairy breed calves of mean ( SD) 11 (1.1) weeks (range, 9.3-13.3 weeks) of age were evaluated. Procedures A Schirmer tear test I was performed on each eye followed by tonometry, using a TonoVet® without topical anesthesia. We report means ( SD) and statistical analysis of data for each assay. Results For both Schirmer tear test ( STT) I and tonometry, significant differences were not found between fellow eyes ( P = 0.1536 and P = 0.83, respectively). The mean ( SD) STT I value of all eyes was 20.4 (5.0) mm/min (range, 9-34 mm/min) while the mean ( SD) intraocular pressure ( IOP) value of all eyes was 15.2 (5.2) mmHg (range, 7-25 mmHg). Conclusions This study reports normal data for the STT I and rebound tonometry in calves. This data may be useful in complete ophthalmic examinations of cattle, guiding diagnosis of glaucoma, uveitis, and keratoconjunctivitis sicca. However, results of these diagnostic modalities must be interpreted in light of clinical signs, given the wide range of normal values obtained in this study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
