Authentication is critical for Internet-of-Things. The traditional approach of using cryptographic keys is subject to invasive attacks. Being unclonable even by the manufacturers, physical unclonable functions (PUFs) leverage integrated circuits' manufacturing variations to produce responses unique for individual devices, and hence are of great potential as security primitives. While physically unclonable, many PUFs were reported to be mathematically cloneable by machine learning-based modeling methods. The feed-forward arbiter PUFs (FF PUFs) are among the PUFs with strong resistance against machine learning attacks. Existing studies revealed that only a very small group of FF PUFs with special loop patterns had been broken, and the vast majority of FF PUFs are still secure against all machine learning attack methods tried so far. In this paper, we introduce a neural network that can successfully attack FF PUFs with any loop patterns, with training time even magnitudes lower than existing methods attacking PUFs of the restrictive loop patterns. Experimental results show that, on the one hand, FF PUFs are not secure against attacks even with a large number of complex feed-forward loops, hence susceptible to attacks by response-prediction-based malicious software. On the other hand, the new approach of designing problem-tailored attack methods points to a new way to identify PUF security risks which might be difficult to discover by general-purpose machine learning methods. The bio‐based hydrophilic monoglycerol succinate was synthesized and reacted with bio‐based raw materials including polyols, pentamethylene diisocyanate, 1,4‐butanediol, to prepare the waterborne polyurethane acrylate (Bio‐WPUA) emulsions with high bio‐based content. The effect of bio‐based polyol categories including poly(trimethylene ether glycol), poly(tetrahydrofuran), and castor oil on the properties of Bio‐WPUA and its films were studied. The structure, thermal stability, crystallinity, contact angle, and mechanical properties of Bio‐WPUA film were characterized with fourier infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, X‐ray diffraction, contact angle analyzer, and mechanical tensile testing. It was found that Bio‐WPUA film containing poly(trimethylene ether glycol) as the soft‐segmented display good tensile stress, thermal stability, and water resistance with 1.38% of the water absorption rate, while Bio‐WPUA containing castor oil polyol as the soft‐segmented had good tensile strain and low‐temperature film‐forming properties with excellent film properties. The bio‐carbon content of Bio‐WPUA was high up to 40% according to ASTM D6866‐22, and possesses good physical mechanical and chemical resistance performance. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a common inflammatory autoimmune disease characterized by synovial inflammation and joint damage. Previous studies have shown that pyroptosis plays an important role in the pathogenesis of RA. In this study, the effects of circular RNA hsa_circ0000175 on pyroptosis and inflammation of RA were evaluated. Serum levels of circ_0000175 and miR-31-5p were determined by RT-qPCR, and the correlation between them was evaluated by Spearman correlation analysis. Fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLSs) were extracted and prepared for in vitro study. The subcellular localization of circ_0000175 was detected by FISH assay. Pyroptosis and inflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-18 and IL-6 were measured by flow cytometry and ELISA, respectively. RNA pull-down and luciferase reporter assays verified the interaction between circ_0000175 and miR-31-5p. Western blot was used to detect the differential expression of pyroptosis-related factors (GSDME-N, GSDMD-N, cleaved caspase-1 and cleaved caspase-3). Circ_0000175 level was increased but miR-31-5p expression was decreased in PBMCs of RA patients and LPS/ATP-treated FLSs, companied with negative correlation. Moreover, miR-31-5p was a target of circ_0000175 in RA-FLSs. Silencing of circ_0000175 or overexpression of miR-31-5p significantly alleviated LPS/ATP-induced pyroptosis in FLSs through both caspase-1/GSDMD and caspase-3/GSDME pathways. Additionally, GSDME was identified as the target of miR-31-5p. The inhibitory effects of circ_0000175 depletion on pyroptosis and inflammation in RA-FLSs treated with LPS/ATP were strengthened by GSDME knockdown. Circ_0000175 can induce pyroptosis and trigger inflammatory response during the occurrence of RA through the miR-31-5p/GSDME axis, which provides a novel therapeutic target for RA treatment. The experimental-based μ (I) rheology is now prevalent to describe the movement of gravitational mass flows. Here, we reformulate μ (I) rheology as a Voellmy-type relationship to illustrate its physical implications. Through one-dimensional block modeling and a real case study, we explore the equivalence between μ (I) and widely-used Voellmy-type grain flow rheologies. Results indicate that μ (I) rheology utilizes a dimensionless inertial number to mimic contributions of granular temperature/fluctuation energy. In terms of Voellmy, the μ (I) rheolgy contains a velocity-dependent turbulent friction coefficient modelling shear thinning behavior. This turbulent friction assumes the production and decay of fluctuation energy are in balance, exhibiting no difference during accelerative and dipositional phases. The constant Coulomb friction coefficient prevents μ (I) rheology from accurately modeling the dispositional characteristics of actual mass flows. Our results highlight the strengths and limitations of both μ (I) and Voellmy rheologies, bolstering the theoretical foundation of mass flow modeling while revealing practical engineering challenges. Studies have shown that as non-coding RNAs, miRNAs regulate all levels of life activities and most pathological processes. Therefore, identifying disease-related miRNAs is essential for disease diagnosis and treatment. However, traditional biological experiments are highly uncertain and time-consuming. Hence, advanced intelligent computational models are needed to address this problem. We propose a dual-channel transformer graph model, named DCTGM, to learn multi-scale representations for miRNA-disease association prediction. Specifically, DCTGM includes a transformer encoder (TE) and GraphSAGE encoder (GE). The TE intensely captures the important interaction information between miRNA-disease pairs, and the GE aggregates multi-hop neighbor information of miRNA-disease association heterograph to enrich node features. Then, an attention module is proposed to aggregate the dual-channel interactive representations, and we adopt a multi-layer perceptron (MLP) to predict the miRNA-disease association scores. The fivefold cross-validation experimental results demonstrate that our proposed DCTGM achieves the AP of 92.735%, F1 of 84.430%, accuracy of 85.255%, and ROC of 93.012%. In addition, we conduct case studies on brain neoplasms, kidney neoplasms, and breast neoplasms. The extensive experiments show that the dbDEMC database validates 100% of the top 20 predicted miRNAs associated with these diseases. Fatty liver hemorrhagic syndrome (FLHS) in laying hens is a nutritional metabolic disease commonly observed in high-yielding laying hens. Sodium butyrate (NaB) and ferroptosis were reported to contribute to the pathogenesis of fatty liver-related diseases. However, the underlying mechanism of NaB in FLHS and whether it mediates ferroptosis remains unclear. A chicken primary hepatocyte induced by free fatty acids (FFAs, keeping the ratio of sodium oleate and sodium palmitate concentrations at 2:1) was established, which received treatments with NaB, the ferroptosis inducer RAS-selective lethal 3 (RSL3), and the inhibitor ferrostatin-1 (Fer-1). As a result, NaB increased biochemical and lipid metabolism indices, and the antioxidant level, while inhibiting intracellular ROS accumulation and the activation of the ferroptosis signaling pathway, as evidenced by a reduction in intracellular iron concentration, upregulated GPX4 and xCT expression, and inhibited NCOA4 and ACSL4 expression. Furthermore, treatment with Fer-1 reinforced the protective effects of NaB, while RSL3 reversed it by blocking the ROS/GPX4/ferroptosis pathway, leading to the accumulation of lipid droplets and oxidative stress. Collectively, our findings demonstrated that NaB protects hepatocytes by regulating the ROS/GPX4-mediated ferroptosis pathway, providing a new strategy and target for the treatment of FLHS. Typhoon-induced rockslide-debris avalanches are among the most dramatic geohazard in coastal mountainous regions, which commonly result in serious casualties and economic loss. In September 2016, typhoon "Catfish" attacked the Su Village in Southeastern China and triggered a devastating rockslide-debris avalanche. The detached mass traveled 1000 m, generated a powerful air blast, and resulted in 27 deaths. In this study, we performed a thorough survey to investigate the avalanche characteristics and damages caused by air blasts. Meanwhile, numerical modeling and video analysis were conducted to investigate the avalanche dynamics and impacts of the air blast. Results indicated that the avalanche movement lasted for approximately 60 s with a maximum velocity of 42 m/s. The entrainment effect greatly enlarged the avalanche volume and extended the avalanche runout. Moreover, the generated air blast indicated a maximum pressure of 2.5 kPa and caused tree breakage beyond the avalanche runout. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

III–V/Si multi-junction solar cells have been widely studied in recent years due to their excellent theoretical efficiency (∼42%). In order to solve the problem of lattice mismatch between Si and III–V compounds of III–V/Si solar cells, different hexagonal Si1−xGex buffer layer models on the surface of hexagonal diamond Si(001) were built, and the structural, electronic and optical properties of the proposed models were calculated based on first principles calculations. The results showed that all models of the designed buffer layer could effectively reduce the lattice mismatch, and the buffer layer hex-Si1−xGex (x = 0, 0.75, and 1) is the ideal model and has achieved the best lattice-matching improvement with high defect formation energy, as well as direct band gap properties and a larger light adsorption coefficient. These theoretical models, with their analyzed properties, could offer a promising pathway toward realizing high efficiency and low cost III–V/Si multi-junction solar cells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Berberine (BBR) is a natural alkaloid with multiple biotical effects that has potential as a treatment for fatty liver hemorrhagic syndrome (FLHS). However, the mechanism underlying the protective effect of BBR against FLHS remains unclear. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of BBR on FLHS induced by a high-energy, low-protein (HELP) diet and explore the involvement of the gut microbiota and bile acid metabolism in the protective effects. A total of 90 healthy 140-day-old Hy-line laying hens were randomly divided into three groups, including a control group (fed a basic diet), a HELP group (fed a HELP diet), and a HELP+BBR group (high-energy, high-protein diet supplemented with BBR instead of maize). Our results show that BBR supplementation alleviated liver injury and hepatic steatosis in laying hens. Moreover, BBR supplementation could significantly regulate the gut's microbial composition, increasing the abundance of Actinobacteria and Romboutsia. In addition, the BBR supplement altered the profile of bile acid. Furthermore, the gut microbiota participates in bile acid metabolism, especially taurochenodeoxycholic acid and α-muricholic acid. BBR supplementation could regulate the expression of genes and proteins related to glucose metabolism, lipid synthesis (FAS, SREBP-1c), and bile acid synthesis (FXR, CYP27a1). Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is a hazardous substance that poses significant risks to environmental ecosystems and animal organisms. However, the specific consequences of Cr(VI) exposure in terms of liver damage remain incompletely understood. This study aims to elucidate the mechanism by which Cr(VI) disrupts mitochondrial dynamics, leading to hepatic injury in ducks. Forty-eight healthy 8-day-old ducks were divided into four groups and subjected to diets containing varying doses of Cr(VI) (0, 9.28, 46.4, and 232 mg/kg) for 49 days. Our results demonstrated that Cr(VI) exposure resulted in disarranged liver lobular vacuolation, along with increasing the serum levels of ALT, AST, and AKP in a dose-dependent manner, which indicated liver damage. Furthermore, Cr(VI) exposure induced oxidative stress by reducing the activities of T-SOD, SOD, GSH-Px, GSH, and CAT, while increasing the contents of MDA and H2O2. Moreover, Cr(VI) exposure downregulated the activities of CS and MDH, resulting in energy disturbance, as evidenced by the reduced AMPK/p-AMPK ratio and PGC-1α protein expression. Additionally, Cr(VI) exposure disrupted mitochondrial dynamics through decreased expression of OPA1, Mfn1, and Mfn2 and increased expression of Drp-1, Fis1, and MFF proteins. This disruption ultimately triggered mitochondria-mediated apoptosis, as evidenced by elevated levels of caspase-3, Cyt C, and Bax, along with decreased expression of Bcl-2 and the Bcl-2/Bax ratio, at both the protein and mRNA levels. In summary, this study highlights that Cr(VI) exposure induces oxidative stress, inhibits the AMPK-PGC-1α pathway, disrupts mitochondrial dynamics, and triggers liver cell apoptosis in ducks. Background: The γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) hypothesis posits a role of GABA deficiency in the central nervous system in the pathogenesis and progression of essential tremor (ET). However, the specific causative factor for GABA deficiency is not clear. The gut microbiota in mammals has recently been considered as a significant source of GABA. Furthermore, the GABA-based signals originating from the intestine can be transmitted to the brain through the "enteric nervous system–vagus nerve–brain" axis. However, the plausible contribution of gut microbiota to ET seems inspiring but remains obscure. Methods: Fecal samples from patients with ET and healthy controls were examined by metagenomic sequencing to compare the composition of gut microbiota and the expression of genes involved in GABA biosynthesis. The impact of gut microbiota on ET was explored through transplantation of fecal microbiota from patients with ET into the murine ET model. Lactic acid bacteria producing high amounts of GABA were identified through whole-genome sequencing and ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Subsequently, mice were treated with the high-GABA-producing strain Lactobacillus plantarum L5. Tremor severity, behavioral tests, pro-inflammatory cytokines, GABA concentration, and gut microbiota composition were examined in these mice. Results: The gut microbiota of patients with ET demonstrated an impaired GABA-producing capacity and a reduced fecal GABA concentration. Transplantation of the gut microbiota from patients with ET induced an extension of tremor duration and impaired mobility in the murine model of ET. L5 exhibited an augmented GABA-producing capacity, with the De Man-Rogosa-Sharpe culture broth containing 262 mg/l of GABA. In addition, administration of L5 significantly decreased the tremor severity and enhanced the movement capability and grasping ability of ET mice. In vivo mechanistic experiments indicated that L5 reshaped the gut microbial composition, supplemented the mucosa-associated microbiota with GABA-producing capacity, increased the GABA concentrations in the cerebellum, and diminished inflammation in the central nervous system. Conclusions: These findings highlight that deficiency of GABA-producing gut microbes plays an essential role in the pathogenesis of ET and that L5 is a promising candidate for treating ET. Typhoon‐induced landslides are widespread, damaging and deadly. In this study, we elucidated their spatiotemporal features through investigations in Southeast coastal China and proposed a numerical model that involves typhoon wind load, preferential infiltration and root reinforcement. The wind load is calculated through a combination of the autoregressive method and a multi‐degree‐of‐freedom tree swaying mode, transmitting to the slope through the wind–tree interaction. Taproots of trees are modelled as piles, and root–soil interfaces are modelled as preferential infiltration boundaries. Using the numerical model, we quantitatively assessed the impacts of wind load, rainfall infiltration and root reinforcement on the slope stability and compared results with cases in Waipaoa and Wairoa (New Zealand). Results suggest that the impacts of trees depend heavily on meteorological and geological conditions. Trees play a destabilizing role in Southeast China during a typhoon but a stabilizing role in the cases in New Zealand. For slopes in Southeast China with a thick soil layer (>root depth), strong wind load and preferential flow resulting from root–soil interfaces, rather than slope surface infiltration, significantly decrease the slope stability in a short time. Slope failure occurred in all scenarios that account for the preferential infiltration, and its combination with a Force 14 typhoon wind load can fail the slope at 10 h after the typhoon initiation. Differently, tree roots in cases in New Zealand can penetrate through the thin soil layer (<1 m) and provide considerable additional resistance to stabilize the slope. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Snow avalanche‐induced air‐blasts are capable of breaking trees, damaging buildings and causing fatalities. Predicting their destructive properties is an essential part of snow avalanche hazard mitigation. Here, we propose a depth‐averaged model that involves turbulent fluctuations to simulate the air‐blast dynamics. The turbulent energy of the air‐blast arises from that of dust‐mixed air transferred from the avalanche core, shearing work in the cloud and entrained air, and is exploited to improve the air entrainment and drag relationships. We further present a unique data set of air blast‐induced tree breakage, providing type, status, diameter and falling direction of the measured trees. Through case studies of two artificially released avalanches with measured powder heights and three natural avalanches with tree‐breakage information, we test the model and investigate the turbulence effect on air‐blast dynamics. The proposed model and tree‐breakage data set quantify the air‐blast destructiveness and can be applied for avalanche hazard assessment. Plain Language Summary: Snow avalanche‐induced air‐blasts are common natural hazards in high‐altitude regions. They are fully turbulent mixtures of ice dust and gases capable of causing damage and human fatalities far beyond the avalanche deposits, representing a major threat to societies in avalanche‐prone environments. In this study, we propose a robust numerical model that accounts for the turbulent fluctuations to simulate the air‐blast dynamics. An unprecedented data set of air blast‐induced tree breakage in three natural snow avalanches is further presented. Using five case studies in Switzerland, of which two artificial avalanches and three natural avalanches with tree‐breakage data, we test the model and investigate the impact of turbulence on air‐blast dynamics. Results suggest great performances of the proposed model in calculating the air‐blast height, impact area and dynamic pressure. Turbulent fluctuations play an important role in the travel resistance and air entrainment of the air‐blast, and can magnify the maximum pressure several times larger than the mean value. The new air‐blast hazard model gives promising perspectives for estimations of snow avalanche hazards, and the tree‐breakage data set can serve as a calibration basis for future more accurate numerical avalanche models. Rock collapse with large volumes can attain high speeds during their freefall motion. The impact of such a falling mass on the ground surface can initiate a powerful air blast with far-field destructive impact. To investigate the formation, disaster-causing mechanism and dynamic characteristics of rock collapse-induced air blasts, an existing coupled discrete-element method (DEM)–computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach is employed on a rock collapse-generated air blast in Zengziyan, China (ZRC). The generated air blast shows a maximum velocity of over 50 m/s and subsequently dissipated rapidly. The high consistency between the simulated air blast dynamics and the video verified the DEM–CFD coupled method in the air blast modeling. Combined with the ZRC-induced air blast analysis, a simplified generalized model was designed to observe the potential effect of geomorphology. Results highlight the great contribution of geomorphology, to both air blast initiation and propagation. Collapsed rock mass with a free fall motion is prone to generate significant air blasts when colliding with the slope surface. Tremendous energy was transferred to the surrounding air at the moment. Compared with falling straight down, air blasts resulting from an airborne trajectory case show a longer propagation because the collapsed materials impart air a higher initial momentum parallel to the slope surface. In addition, air blast propagation in wide distribution areas in comparison to narrow valleys shows greater attenuation. This study will aid in understanding the mechanism of a rock collapse-induced air blast as well as the forward simulation of similar events for risk assessment. Background: Changes in the gut microbiota composition is a hallmark of chronic kidney disease (CKD), and interventions targeting the gut microbiota present a potent approach for CKD treatment. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of washed microbiota transplantation (WMT), a modified faecal microbiota transplantation method, on the renal activity of patients with renal dysfunction. Methods: A comparative analysis of gut microbiota profiles was conducted in patients with renal dysfunction and healthy controls. Furthermore, the efficacy of WMT on renal parameters in patients with renal dysfunction was evaluated, and the changes in gut microbiota and urinary metabolites after WMT treatment were analysed. Results: Principal coordinate analysis revealed a significant difference in microbial community structure between patients with renal dysfunction and healthy controls (P = 0.01). Patients with renal dysfunction who underwent WMT exhibited significant improvement in serum creatinine, estimated glomerular filtration rate, and blood urea nitrogen (all P < 0.05) compared with those who did not undergo WMT. The incidence of adverse events associated with WMT treatment was low (2.91%). After WMT, the Shannon index of gut microbiota and the abundance of several probiotic bacteria significantly increased in patients with renal dysfunction, aligning their gut microbiome profiles more closely with those of healthy donors (all P < 0.05). Additionally, the urine of patients after WMT demonstrated relatively higher levels of three toxic metabolites, namely hippuric acid, cinnamoylglycine, and indole (all P < 0.05). Conclusions: WMT is a safe and effective method for improving renal function in patients with renal dysfunction by modulating the gut microbiota and promoting toxic metabolite excretion. Coating the perovskite layer via a two-step method is an adaptable solution for industries compared to the anti-solvent process. But what about the impact of unreacted PbI2? Usually, it is generated during perovskite conversion in a two-step method and considered beneficial within the grain boundaries, while also being accused of enhancing the interface defects and nonradiative recombination. Several additives are mixed in PbI2 precursors for the purpose of improving the perovskite crystallinity and hindering the Pb2+ defects. Herein, in lieu of adding additives to the PbI2, the effects of the PbI2 residue via the electron transport layer/perovskite interface modification are explored. Consequently, by introducing artemisinin decorated with hydrophobic alkyl units and a ketone group, it reduces the residual PbI2 and improves the perovskites' crystallinity by coordinating with Pb2+. Intravenous-cardiac leiomyomatosis is an uncommon tumor arising from invasive uterine leiomyomata, with nodular masses extending into the inferior vena cava, right heart chamber, and even pulmonary arteries or lung. This report describes two cases of intravenous leiomyomatosis invading the right heart. A total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and intravenous leiomyomata was performed. However, the intracardiac tumor was pulled apart, and the residual tumor remained unchanged at the 4-year follow-up in one patient. Its early diagnosis might be difficult because cardiac symptoms only develop once the tumor extends into the right heart or pulmonary arteries, resulting in cardiac insufficiency. Typhoon-induced deep-seated landslides are prone to cause mass casualties to coastal regions once they occur. On 10th August 2019, typhoon "Lekima" triggered the deadliest landslide in recent decades in Southeast coastal China (32 deaths). To investigate the possible failure mechanism of this catastrophic event, we conducted in situ investigations and image analysis to determine the geological characteristics and performed numerical modelling of transient variation in slope stability throughout the typhoon. Generalized modelling analysis was further designed to research the impacts of some landslide settings and forcing factors on this type of geohazard. Our findings show that cracks within the weathered rock played vital roles in the landslide initiation. Cracks-induced strength reduction made the saturated rock provide insufficient resistance to stabilize the slope. Preferential infiltration promotes the saturation of sliding mass within a short-duration typhoon, responsible for the rapid failure. Furthermore, the impact of trees on slope stability depends heavily on landslide settings. Constrained by the limited growth depth of roots, though both beneficial and detrimental mechanisms of trees show minor impacts on the development of a deep-seated sliding surface, trees and geological settings converged to produce the failure mode of the Yongjia landslide. Roots significantly enhanced the shallow soil layer and the soil–rock interface is simulated to be the potential sliding surface in the absence of trees. Results suggest future landslide risk assessments in Southeast coastal China to specify the meteorological and geological conditions, which would greatly improve the aim to predict the spatiotemporal distribution of landslides throughout a typhoon. On August 10, 2019, typhoon "Lekima" and the associated heavy rainfall triggered a large landslide in Yongjia County, Zhejiang, China. The sliding mass blocked the river, resulted in an air blast and barrier lake disaster chain, and caused 32 deaths. A thorough survey was performed to investigate the characteristics and possible failure mechanisms of the event. The landslide initiation is caused by the combination of rock mass characteristics, wind load, heavy rainfall, and human activities. The presence of roots and cracks in the strongly weathered tuff provides preferential infiltration channels for the rainwater penetration, causing the rapid destabilization of the slope. Furthermore, we used the dynamic model RAMMS and empirical equations to analyze the disaster-causing process of the landslide. Results indicated that the landslide movement lasted for about 30 s with a maximum velocity of 21 m/s. The generated air blast shows a maximum pressure of 1.7 kPa and caused tree breakage on the opposite side of the river. Subsequently, the sliding mass blocked the river and generated a landslide dam with a maximum thickness of about 14 m. Its combination with heavy rainfall led to the rise of the upstream water level and the submersion of houses in the Shanzao village within 20 min. Aiming at the issues of complex manufacturing processes and unstable bonding after individual manufacturing in current soft manipulator forming methods, this study investigated the mechanical characteristics of a pneumatically driven soft-picking manipulator formed by the stereolithography (SLA) process and evaluated its application in grasping fruits and vegetables. The soft-picking manipulator mainly consists of three soft actuators designed in an integrated folded structure to simplify the manufacturing process compared to a conventional one. A finite element model (FEM) of the actuator was created to analyze the bending deformation capability under different pressures, and the simulated results match well with the experimental ones. Under the 60 kPa pressure, the maximum grasping force for fingertip- and envelope-grasping is 3.94 N and 8.87 N, respectively. The grasping tests of several fruits and vegetables of different weights and sizes by the soft manipulator were examined, and the results showed that the manipulator has strong adaptability. For spherical and elongated fruits and vegetables, the completion time for grasping is approximately 8.59 ± 1.26 s and 10.99 ± 1.79 s, respectively, and for irregularly shaped ones, the pressure is increased accordingly to the increased grasping stability. The aromatization mechanisms of ligustilide (1), a versatile monomeric phthalide, were investigated. DFT calculations combined with control experiments prove that the aromatization could result from direct oxidation by triplet oxygen in mild conditions with no catalyst, which is generally thought to be difficult. Moreover, it is predicted that the aromatization could rapidly clear away the harmful-to-organism singlet oxygen, which may be relevant to the general antioxidation activity of phthalides, providing a new point of view to understand the bioactivity from chemical reaction. The 2D discrete element method has been employed to analyze the dynamic fragmentation characteristics of the Zengziyan columnar rockfall that occurred in Chongqing, China, in 2004. In this study, characteristics of particle morphometric distribution of the simulation were verified by a new image analysis method. The simulated runout behavior of the Zengziyan columnar rockfall was validated by the video analysis method. The numerical results of this study showed that the maximum velocity of the rockfall mass was 40 m/s, and the entire dynamic process lasted approximately 27 s. Fragments were identified in the numerical model on the basis of the presence or absence of cement between particles. The results showed that the fragmentation of the Zengziyan rockfall mainly occurred when the bottom of the rockfall mass broke, and during the collision process along the runout path. However, during the accumulation process, the rockfall mass barely fragmented. The results of fitting the cumulative distribution of fragment size showed that their fractal dimension D increased (from 2.05 to 2.12), and the fragment scale parameter d c decreased significantly (from 15.84 to 3.77) before and after the rockfall, respectively. Thus, it was confirmed that the rockfall mass underwent significant fragmentation and produced many fine fragments during the initiation stage, and fragmentation lessened during the transport stage along the runout path. Moreover, the increasing fractal dimension of particles indicated the enhanced mobility of the rockfall, which may be explained by the volume amplification caused by fragmentation. These findings of this research provide original insight into the study of the dynamic fragmentation process of similar rockfall hazards from the perspective of particle size distribution, which provides guidance for the disaster management. Food safety is a significant issue that affects people worldwide and is tied to their lives and health. The issue of pesticide residues in food is just one of many issues related to food safety, which leave residues in crops and are transferred through the food chain to human consumption. Foods contaminated with pesticide residues pose a serious risk to human health, including carcinogenicity, neurotoxicity, and endocrine disruption. Although traditional methods, including gas chromatography, high-performance liquid chromatography, chromatography, and mass spectrometry, can be used to achieve a quantitative analysis of pesticide residues, the disadvantages of these techniques, such as being time-consuming and costly and requiring specialist staff, limit their application. Therefore, there is a need to develop rapid, effective, and sensitive equipment for the quantitative analysis of pesticide residues in food. Microfluidics is rapidly emerging in a number of fields due to its outstanding strengths. This paper summarizes the application of microfluidic techniques to pyrethroid, carbamate, organochlorine, and organophosphate pesticides, as well as to commercial products. Background and Objectives: The oral bioavailability of withangulatin A (WA) is low and may undergo first-pass metabolism because of the presence of two esters bonds. This study aimed to identify the hydrolysis behavior and mechanism of WA, thus enriching its structure-pharmacokinetic relationship. Methods: The in vivo pharmacokinetic studies of WA in rats were first investigated, followed by in vitro assays including metabolic stability, phenotyping identification and metabolic kinetics assays. After screening out the responsible enzymes with higher catalytic capacity, molecular docking study was performed to demonstrate the interaction mode between WA and metabolic enzymes. Then, metabolites in human serum albumin (HSA) were identified by LC-TOF-MS/MS. Results: In rats, the oral bioavailability of WA was only 2.83%. In vitro, WA was hydrolyzed in both rat and human plasma and could not be inhibited by selective esterase inhibitors. Physiologic concentration of HSA not recombinant human carboxylesterases (rhCES) could significantly hydrolyze WA, and it had a similar hydrolytic capacity with human plasma to WA. Furthermore, WA could stably bind to HSA by forming hydrogen bonds with Lys199 and Arg410, accompanied by the metabolic reaction of the lactone ring opening. Conclusion: The study showed that WA underwent obvious hydrolysis in rat and human plasma, which implied a strong first-pass effect. Introduction: Anemia is a common manifestation of chronic liver diseases. It is a predictor of severe disease, a high risk of complications, and poor outcomes in various liver diseases. However, it remains unclear whether anemia serves as a similar indicator in patients with Wilson disease (WD). Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between anemia and severity, hepatic complications, and the progression of WD. Methods: Medical data were collected retrospectively from January 1, 2016, to December 31, 2020. Univariate and multivariate analyses were carried out to investigate the relationship between anemia and liver-associated disease severity, hepatic complications, and the progression of WD. Results: A total of 288 WD patients (48 with and 240 without anemia) were enrolled in the study. Multivariate linear regression revealed that WD patients with anemia had significantly higher levels of bilirubin, alanine transaminase, prothrombin time, international normalized ratio, type Ⅳ collagen, and hyaluronic acid and significantly lower levels of albumin, total cholesterol, and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (all p < 0.05). Multivariate logistic regression showed that anemia was a risk factor for gastric varices and ascites (all p < 0.05). Fully adjusted Cox regression revealed that anemia was an independent risk factor for advanced Child-Pugh classification (p = 0.034). Purpose: E-commerce live streaming is a new influencer advertising method that allows influencers to interact directly with consumers on e-commerce platforms. Although evidence suggests that influencer live-streaming advertisements (ads) on social media can increase consumers' buying impulses, little research examined how this similar but new advertising method on e-commerce platforms may influence consumers' urge to buy impulsively. This study explores the role of influencer credibility, celebrity effect, perceived entertainment, trust and perceived usefulness on consumers' attitudes toward influencer ads and their urge to buy impulsively. Design/methodology/approach: A questionnaire containing seven constructs was developed and distributed to participants using a convenient sample and snowball sampling approach. The constructs were measured based on validated measurement items from the literature and adjusted according to this study's focus. A total of 236 valid responses were obtained from the survey and used for data analysis. A partial least squares structural equation modeling approach was employed for parameter estimation and model testing. Findings: The empirical results show that all constructs influenced consumers' urge to buy impulsively via attitude toward influencer ads. The proposed research model explains 61.7% of the variance in attitude toward influencer ads and 19.4% of the urge to buy impulsively. Originality/value: This is an early study investigating the relationship between influencer advertising and impulse buying. Copper (Cu) can be harmful to host physiology at high levels, although it is still unclear exactly how it causes nephrotoxicity. Mitochondrial dysfunction and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress are associated with heavy metal intoxication. Meanwhile, mitochondria and ER are connected via mitochondria-associated ER membranes (MAM). In order to reveal the crosstalk between them, a total of 144 1-day-old Peking ducks were randomly divided into four groups: control (basal diet), 100 mg/kg Cu, 200 mg/kg Cu, and 400 mg/kg Cu groups. Results found that excessive Cu disrupted MAM integrity, reduced the co-localization of IP3R and VDAC1, and significantly changed the MAM-related factors levels (Grp75, Mfn2, IP3R, MCU, PACS2, and VDAC1), leading to MAM dysfunction. We further found that Cu exposure induced mitochondrial dysfunction via decreasing the ATP level and the expression levels of COX4, TOM20, SIRT1, and OPA1 and up-regulating Parkin expression level. Meanwhile, Cu exposure dramatically increased the expression levels of Grp78, CRT, and ATF4, resulting in ER stress. Overall, these findings demonstrated MAM plays the critical role in Cu-induced kidney mitochondrial dysfunction and ER stress, which deepened our understanding of Cu-induced nephrotoxicity. Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is a prevalent cancer type with a poor prognosis. As a form of programmed cell death, pyroptosis has been implicated in cancer growth, invasion, and metastasis. To investigate the relationship between pyroptosis and the prognosis of ESCC, we analyzed the expression profiles and clinical data of patients with ESCC, obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus and The Cancer Genome Atlas databases, using bioinformatics analysis. Univariate Cox, multivariate Cox, and LASSO Cox regression analyses were conducted to develop a pyroptosis-related prognostic model (riskScore). CIBERSORT and MCPcounter algorithm evaluated the proportion of various immune infiltrating cells. Tissues from 16 patients were collected to verify the expression of key pyroptosis-related genes (PRGs) using real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR), western blot, and immunohistochemical assays. Additionally, functional assays were performed in ESCC cell lines KYSE-150 and ECA-109 to examine the role of key PRGs. Among 25 pyroptosis-related regulators, 12 genes exhibited differential expression between tumor and normal tissues. Based on the differential expression of PRGs, we identified two subgroups with distinct clinical and molecular features. We further established a pyroptosis-related model with high prognostic value. In addition, we found a significant association of PRGs and riskScore with immune cell infiltration and the response rate of immunotherapy. Furthermore, we confirmed the low expression of WFDC12 in ESCC. Cellular assays demonstrated that the knockdown of WFDC12 in ESCC cell lines promoted cell proliferation and migration. Collectively, our findings highlight the critical role of PRGs in the development and prognosis of ESCC, while our riskScore could accurately predict the prognosis and immunogenicity of ESCC. Oxidative stress can adversely affect the health status of the body, more specifically by causing intestinal damage by disrupting the permeability of the intestinal barrier. This is closely related to intestinal epithelial cell apoptosis caused by the mass production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Baicalin (Bai) is a major active ingredient in Chinese traditional herbal medicine that has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer properties. The purpose of this study was to explore the underlying mechanisms by which Bai protects against hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced intestinal injury in vitro. Our results indicated that H2O2 treatment caused injury to IPEC-J2 cells, resulting in their apoptosis. However, Bai treatment attenuated H2O2-induced IPEC-J2 cell damage by up-regulating the mRNA and protein expression of ZO-1, Occludin, and Claudin1. Besides, Bai treatment prevented H2O2-induced ROS and MDA production and increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, and GSH-PX). Moreover, Bai treatment also attenuated H2O2-induced apoptosis in IPEC-J2 cells by down-regulating the mRNA expression of Caspase-3 and Caspase-9 and up-regulating the mRNA expression of FAS and Bax, which are involved in the inhibition of mitochondrial pathways. The expression of Nrf2 increased after treatment with H2O2, and Bai can alleviate this phenomenon. Meanwhile, Bai down-regulated the ratio of phosphorylated AMPK to unphosphorylated AMPK, which is indicative of the mRNA abundance of antioxidant-related genes. In addition, knockdown of AMPK by short-hairpin RNA (shRNA) significantly reduced the protein levels of AMPK and Nrf2, increased the percentage of apoptotic cells, and abrogated Bai-mediated protection against oxidative stress. Collectively, our results indicated that Bai attenuated H2O2-induced cell injury and apoptosis in IPEC-J2 cells through improving the antioxidant capacity through the inhibition of the oxidative stress-mediated AMPK/Nrf2 signaling pathway. It is well established that PRRSV elimination is an effective strategy for PRRS control, but published reports concerning successful PRRSV elimination cases in farrow-to-finishing herds are rare. Here, we have reported a successful PRRSV elimination case in a farrow-to-finish herd by employing a "herd closure and rollover" approach with some modifications. Briefly, the introduction of pigs to the herd was stopped and normal production processes were maintained until the herd reached a PRRSV provisional negative status. During the herd closure, strict biosecurity protocols were implemented to prevent transmission between nursery pigs and sows. In the current case, introducing gilts before herd closure and live PRRSV exposure were skipped. In the 23rd week post-outbreak, the pre-weaning piglets started to show 100% PRRSV negativity in qPCR tests. In the 27th week, nursery and fattening barns fully launched depopulation. In the 28th week, nursery and fattening houses reopened and sentinel gilts were introduced into gestation barns. Sixty days post-sentinel gilt introduction, the sentinel pigs maintained being PRRSV antibody negative, manifesting that the herd matched the standard of the provisional negative status. The production performance of the herd took 5 months to bounce back to normal. Overall, the current study provided additional information for PRRSV elimination in farrow-to-finish pig herds. On September 16, 2020, the combination of mining activities and constant rainfall triggered a long runout landslide in Jianshanying area, Guizhou Province, China, causing a landslide of approximately 80x104 m³ of rock and soil to slide down and form a debris flow. The maximum movement distance of the landslide reached 1 km, with a maximum height difference of about 300 m. Many houses and two roads were destroyed, fortunately without causing casualties. In this study, detailed field investigation combined with the UAV aerial photography were conducted to obtain the geological setting and the digital elevation model of the landslide region. Subsequently, the dynamic model DAN3D was utilized to study the dynamic characteristics and deposit distribution of the Jianshanying landslide. Simulated results were found to match the actual situation well, and the Frictional-Voellmy rheology was identified as an accurate tool for simulating the long runout landslide. Based on the numerical parameters determined from the inversion work, the sliding process and possible travel distance of the potential landslide were simulated. The findings from this study will be helpful aid in predicting landslide runout in high-altitude regions, particularly for the residents in the potential danger zone of the Jianshanying landslide. Introduction: The efficacy of postoperative radiotherapy (PORT) is still unclear in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients with pIIIA-N2 disease. Estrogen receptor (ER) was proven significantly associated with poor clinical outcome of male lung squamous cell cancer (LUSC) after R0 resection in our previous study. Methods: A total of 124 male pIIIA-N2 LUSC patients who completed four cycles of adjuvant chemotherapy and PORT after complete resection were eligible for enrollment in this study from October 2016 to December 2021. ER expression was evaluated using immunohistochemistry assay. Results: The median follow-up was 29.7 months. Among 124 patients, 46 (37.1%) were ER positive (stained tumor cells=1%), and the rest 78 (62.9%) were ER negative. Eleven clinical factors considered in this study were well balanced between ER+ and ER-groups. ER expression significantly predicted a poor prognosis in disease-free survival (DFS, HR=2.507; 95% CI: 1.629-3.857; log-rank p=1.60×10-5). The 3-year DFS rates were 37.8% with ER- vs. 5.7% with ER+, with median DFS 25.9 vs. 12.6 months, respectively. The significant prognostic advantage in ER-patients was also observed in overall survival (OS), local recurrence free survival (LRFS), and distant metastasis free survival (DMFS). The 3-year OS rates were 59.7% with ER- vs. 48.2% with ER+ (HR, 1.859; 95% CI: 1.132-3.053; log-rank p=0.013), the 3-year LRFS rates were 44.1% vs. 15.3% (HR=2.616; 95% CI: 1.685-4.061; log-rank p=8.80×10-6), and the 3-year DMFS rates were 45.3% vs. 31.8% (HR=1.628; 95% CI: 1.019-2.601; logrank p=0.039). Cox regression analyses indicated that ER status was the only significant factor for DFS (p=2.940×10-5), OS (p=0.014), LRFS (p=1.825×10-5) and DMFS (p=0.041) among other 11 clinical factors. Improving mass transfer in gas diffusion layers is critical to achieving high-performance proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Leaks through the interface between the gas and the membrane electrode assembly frame have been widely investigated, and the controllability of the cathode gas diffusion has not been achieved in most studies. In this study, we develop a structural parameter to investigate the controllability of the gas diffusion mechanism in the cathode in order to improve upon the design and performance of PEMFCs. This parameter accounts for the cathode gas diffusion layer porosity and carbon loading inside the catalyst layer. It is comprehensively calculated to relax the two segments' distribution along three directions of the coordinate axis. The experimental and simulation results show that the obtained values of the parameter vary and change during voltage stabilization. According to the results, regardless of the materials in the cathode gas diffusion layer, the same steady-state voltage is obtained when the parameter is fixed. On April 9, 2018, a massive rock avalanche hit the area of Karimabad, Hunza. Approximately 2Mm3 of rock mass detached from the source area and traveled a total of 4.88 km. The rock mass deposited along 2000 m length and destroyed the Ultar meadows. The avalanche killed three tourists and resulted in a vast dust cloud that engulfed the entire town of Karimabad in a few seconds. In this paper, we have analyzed the dynamic characteristics of the Ultar rock avalanche and subsequent airblast using a coupled three-dimensional discrete element modeling and computational fluid dynamics approach. Two-way coupling was carried out using an application programming interface that transferred the data between models to simulate the avalanche movement and induced airblast. We have also analyzed the formation and propagation of induced dust clouds based on field investigation, captured video, and climatic conditions. The study concludes that the Ultar rock avalanche's movement lasted 148 s. The average velocity of sliding material was found to be 26.35 m/s. The dynamics of induced airblast were studied along the entire runout path. The maximum velocity of generated airblast along different sections of the runout path was found to be 40 m/s and 35 m/s, respectively, whereas the relative pressure of the blast wave was found to be 0.6 kPa. Furthermore, the results revealed that a low-pressure dust cloud traveled a long distance due to the continuous fragmentation of the sliding material along a steep runout path. The induced dust cloud engulfed the entire town of Karimabad, Hunza, for several hours. This study is expected to help scientists further explore the dynamics of the airblast. Landslides have been known to generate powerful air blasts capable of causing destruction and casualties far beyond the runout of sliding mass. The extent of tree damage provides valuable information on air blast intensity and impact region. However, little attention has been paid to the air blast–tree interaction. In this study, we proposed a framework to assess the tree destruction caused by powerful air blasts, including the eigenfrequency prediction method, tree motion equations and the breakage conditions. The tree is modeled as a flexible beam with variable cross-sections, and the anchorage stiffness is introduced to describe the tilt of the tree base. Large tree deflection is regarded when calculating the air blast loading, and two failure modes (bending and overturning) and the associated failure criteria are defined. Modeling results indicate that although the anchorage properties are of importance to the tree eigenfrequency, tree eigenfrequency is always close to the air blast frequency, causing a dynamic magnification effect for the tree deformation. This magnification effect is significant in cases with a low air blast velocity, while the large tree deflection caused by strong air blast loading would weaken this effect. Furthermore, failure modes of a specific forest subject to a powerful air blast depend heavily on the trunk bending strength and anchorage characteristics. The large variation in biometric and mechanical properties of trees necessitates the establishment of a regional database of tree parameters. Our work and the proposed method are expected to provide a better understanding of air blast power and to be of great use for air blast risk assessment in mountainous regions worldwide. The accumulation of copper (Cu) in the organisms could lead to kidney damage by causing mitochondrial dysfunction. Given that mitochondria are one of the targets of Cu poisoning, this study aimed to investigate the role of mitophagy in Cu‐induced mitochondrial dysfunction in renal tubular epithelial cells to understand the mechanism of Cu nephrotoxicity. Hence, the cells were treated with different concentrations of Cu sulfate (CuSO4) (0, 100, and 200 μM), and mitophagy inhibitor (Cyclosporine A, 0.5 μM) and/or 200 μM CuSO4 in the combination for 12 h. Results showed that Cu caused mitochondrial swelling, vacuoles, and cristae fracture; increased the number of mitochondrial and lysosome fluorescent aggregation points; upregulated the mRNA levels of mitophagy‐associated genes (LC3A, LC3B, P62, BNIP3, NIX, OPTN, NDP52, Cyp D LAMP1, and LAMP2) and protein levels of LC3II/LC3I, BNIP3, and NIX, downregulated the mRNA and protein levels of P62; reduced the mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), ATP content, mitochondrial respiratory control rate (RCR), mitochondrial respiratory control rate (OPR), and the mRNA and protein levels of PGC‐1α, TOMM20, and Mfn2, but increased the mRNA and protein levels of Drp1. Besides, cotreatment with Cu and CsA dramatically decreased the level of mitophagy, but increased mitochondrial division, further reduced MMP, ATP content, RCR, and OPR, mitochondrial fusion and thereby reduced mitochondrial biogenesis. Taken together, these data indicated that Cu exposure induced BNIP3/NIX‐dependent mitophagy in duck renal tubular epithelial cells, and inhibition of mitophagy aggravated Cu‐induced mitochondrial dysfunction. Investment and construction of energy and transport-related infrastructure are closely linked to the achievement of sustainable development goals. China's infrastructure-led foreign investment, technical integration, and tourism with Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) countries have maintained exponential growth. This growth certainly has an impact on economic development mode and environmental sustainability. Therefore, this study examines the impact of infrastructure-led Chinese outward foreign direct investment, tourism development, and technology innovation on carbon emissions across the selected BRI node countries and respective regions. This study employs cross-sectional autoregressive distributive lag model to deal with parameters and cross-sectional heterogeneity. The results exhibit that foreign direct investment and technology innovation reduces carbon emissions in the long run, while tourism development and its interaction with foreign direct investment led to higher emissions in the overall BRI sample. In contrast, the regional estimates show significant variations in the magnitude and direction of the relationship, where foreign direct investment produces an emissions-increasing effect in South Asian and MENA countries. Moreover, the results support the validity of the Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis in overall and regional samples. Simple Summary: Avian colibacillosis is one of the major causes of animal death and egg-production decline, which has caused economic losses to the poultry industry. When encountering avian colibacillosis, many poultry farms tend to use antibiotics to reduce losses. Additionally, the utilization of antimicrobials is also disputable. Our study shows that luteolin can alleviate the inflammation and oxidative stress caused by Escherichia coli in the ilea of chicks and may be used as a substitute for antibiotics to control avian colibacillosis. Avian pathogenic E. coli (APEC) is typically the cause of avian colibacillosis, which can result in oxidative stress, inflammation, and intestinal damage (APEC). Luteolin, in the form of glycosylation flavone, has potent anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative properties. However, its effects on APEC-induced intestinal oxidative stress and NF-κB-mediated inflammation in chicks remains poorly understood. After hatching, one-day-old chicks were stochastically assigned to four groups: a control group (basic diet), an E. coli group (basic diet) and L10 and L20 groups (with a dry matter of luteolin diet 10 mg/kg and 20 mg/kg, respectively), with fifteen chicks in each group and one repeat per group. They were pretreated for thirteen days. The body weight, mortality, histopathological changes in the ileum, antioxidant status, and the mRNA and protein-expression levels of factors associated with the HMGB1/TLR4/NF-κB signal axis of the chicks were measured. The results showed that luteolin treatment decreased the mRNA and protein-expression level of the related factors of HMGB1/TLR4/NF-κB signal axis in the ileum, reduced inflammation, increased antioxidant enzyme activity, and reduced intestinal injury. Collectively, luteolin alleviated APEC-induced intestinal damage by means of hindering the HMGB1/TLR4/NF-κB signal axis, which suggests that luteolin could be a good method for the prevention and treatment of avian colibacillosis. In the past 20 years, Lebai gully (Linzhi, Tibet, China) has been affected by several debris flow events. These debris flow events caused the blockage of three-quarters of the river channel at the mouth of the Lebai gully, threatening thousands of acres of cultivated land, houses, and residents' property in the upper reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo River. However, few investigations have been carried out on the debris flows in the Lebai gully, and the triggering mechanism of Lebai debris flows remains elusive. In this paper, we presented a detailed demonstration of the geological environment and geomorphological features of the Lebai Basin, and a detailed geohazard history of the Lebai gully was collected and presented based on interviews with local villagers. To provide information on the lithological, hydrological, and geotechnical characteristics of the terrain in Lebai gully, the electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) method was carried out to research the subsurface characteristics of debris flow fans. The ERT results illustrated the two-layered vertical strata of the debris fan, and the shallow layer of relatively low resistivity, which has thicknesses of 5–18 m, could be described as Quaternary colluvial deposits, while the deep layer of relatively high resistivity could be considered Precambrian bedrock. Taking a relatively large-scale debris flow on August 20, 2003, as an example, a detailed discussion was carried out on the possible factors triggering this event, and it was found that the Lebai debris flows were closely related to pre-event rainfall, air temperature, and antecedent earthquakes. Moreover, with the intention of evaluating the future risk of river blockage and helping to make rational decisions on developing suitable mitigation measures, the unstable deposits found in field investigations were generalized to geometric models according to their geometric characteristics, and the volumes of these unstable materials in each location were estimated using digital elevation models and geometric spatial analysis methods. A dynamic model named RAMMS was used to predict these unstable materials' dynamic processes and final deposit characteristics. The simulation results revealed a great possibility that the Yarlung Tsangpo River will be blocked at the mouth of Lebai gully in the future, and it is necessary to take further mitigation measures. The research in this paper contributes to a better understanding of the debris flows in the Lebai Basin and provides meaningful and valuable information for debris flow hazard mitigation in the future. Large ice/rock avalanches have been known to generate extremely powerful air blasts capable of causing fatalities and destruction far beyond the runout of the movement mass. Thus, an appraisal of their possible destructive air blast should be considered during the risk assessments. However, much less is known about how avalanche-induced air blasts occur and how destructive they are. Here an existing DEM-CFD coupled method was innovatively employed to quantitatively analyze the initiation and propagation mechanism of the air blast caused by the largest ice-rock avalanche during Nepal's 2015 Gorkha earthquake, and compared the results with some recorded events. Our results highlighted the contribution of valley morphology to air blast generation. Large high-velocity ice/rock avalanches that have an airborne trajectory or a travel path with turning points can suddenly release tremendous energy and more probably cause destructive air blasts. Additionally, the Langtang air blast presented a propagation of 1 km from the avalanche impact point and equivalent destruction to an EF2–EF5 tornado, causing mass casualties. The large impact region and destructive force of avalanche-induced air blasts suggests their disastrous consequences that should provoke assessment of such type of cascading effect during the landslide risk assessment, especially for the long-term sustainability of planned infrastructure in high-altitude regions.
