Hermansky–Pudlak syndrome (HPS) is a rare autosomal recessively inherited disorder consisting of the triad of oculocutaneous tyrosinase-positive albinism, prolonged bleeding time secondary to platelet storage pool defect and ceroid depositions within the reticuloendothelial system. Some patients also reportedly have gastrointestinal (GI) complications related to chronic granulomatous colitis, enterocolitis and extensive granulomatous perianal disease, the later previously unreported in the literature. These observations suggest that the GI complications of HPS are due to the development of classical Crohn's disease. The implications for disease pathogenesis and surgical management are discussed. The wear resistance of titanium alloys can be increased by thermochemical treatment like nitriding. Conventional nitriding processes require high treatment temperatures for high enough diffusion of nitrogen. However, treatment at 800°C and higher temperatures decreases the fatigue resistance of the alloys. Consequently, it is necessary to find a compromise between the increase in the wear resistance and the decrease in the mechanical properties. The use of an intensified glow discharge can solve the problem. For this purpose a source of electrons with a low negative potential is installed in addition to the cathode and the anode. In the presence of additional electrons the density of the plasma and hence the glow discharge current increase substantially without growth in the discharge pressure. This increases significantly the mean energy of the ions and decreases noticeably the heating effect of the plasma. The present work is devoted to problems in the commercial use of an intensified glow discharge. Nitriding in an intensified glow discharge makes it possible to decrease the treatment temperature to 600°C. Plasma-assisted nitriding of aluminum alloys promises to become a suitable alternative to variants of thermochemical treatment used for raising the wear resistance of these materials especially from the standpoint of the environmental effect. Process performed in vacuum with the use of nitrogen and an argon-hydrogen mixture as the process gas provides for the formation of a layer of compounds (aluminum nitrides) with enhanced hardness on various aluminum alloys. However, until the present the process has been used only at the laboratory scale. No data can be found in the literature, for example, on the effect of the batch size on the uniformity of the thickness of the nitrided layer or on the wear resistance of parts from aluminum alloys. The present work is a study of plasma-assisted nitriding of commercially produced parts (pistons) fabricated from an aluminum alloy. The parameters of the process are chosen after the determining optimum conditions for preliminary sputtering treatment. Special attention is devoted to provision of temperature uniformity within a batch and the possibility of improving the surface quality by increasing the thickness of the compound layer. The topography of the surface and the thickness, chemical composition, and hardness of the compound layer are studied by the methods of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), metallography, and measurement of ultramicrohardness. The performance characteristics of untreated, nitrided, and anodized pistons are evaluated with the help of vibration wear tests with a rider fabricated from a standard material. Abstract Rationale: The demonstration of tolerance to the anxiolytic effects of benzodiazepines remains inconsistent. Objectives: The present study tested the hypothesis that intact and gonadectomized male and female rats might exhibit differential tolerance to the anxiolytic effects of diazepam (DZ). Methods: Following acute (3 days) or chronic (3 weeks) DZ exposure, all animals were tested on the elevated plus-maze and immediately sacrificed for analysis of corticosterone, adrenocorticotropin hormone, estrogen and progesterone levels in serum. In experiment 2, following acute or chronic DZ exposure, animals were treated with a DZ challenge dose on the test day. Results: In experiment 1, both acute and chronic DZ treatment similarly enhanced percentage open arm time and entries, regardless of the hormonal status of the animal. The results of experiment 2 showed that both acute and chronic DZ-treated animals exhibited a significantly higher percentage open arm time than control animals after the DZ challenge dose, and males and females did not differ in their responses to DZ exposure. Conclusions: The findings from these experiments suggest that tolerance to the anxiolytic effects of DZ did not develop in males or females, and that the hormonal status of the animal does not significantly alter the anxiolytic effects of DZ following either acura or chronic exposure. We describe the behavior of dilute polymer solutions by means of light-scattering under shear flow. Solution properties of polystyrene in benzene over a wide range of molecular weight has been studied to determine the coefficients a and K of the Mark-Houwink relationship and to estimate the rheological conditions with regard to light-scattering experiments of flowing polymer solutions. The investigations were carried out to measure the shear-rate dependence of macromolecules in solution, e.g., to observe an orientation and changing of the mean-square radius of gyration. Rheological measurements and light-scattering experiments were performed on dilute solutions of high molecular polystyrene. We are able to describe the orientation behavior of chain molecules under shear flow by means of light-scattering. Beyond that these investigations of light-scattering of flowing polymer solutions are an useful and suitable tool for detection and characterization of Taylor vortex formation. We can estimate the appearance of these hydrodynamic instabilities, which overlay the laminar main flow and we can observe a typical influence of the solvent power on it. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Within the framework of the hydrodynamic model the exact coupling constants of the coupling of the giant multipole resonances to the surface quadrupole oscillations of nuclei are derived. The differences to former variational calculations are discussed. It is found that the coupling constants for the terms linear in the surface variables are almost the same whereas the coupling constants for the quadratic terms differ appreciably. A cold working steel was coated both with high temperature CVD (TiN) and moderate temperature CVD (Ti[C,N]). AES depth profiles show a significant difference at the interface, where a thin oxide layer remains detectable at deposition temperatures of 750 °C. It could be shown that an impedance signal at a frequency of 13 MHz is well suited to detect the early stages of the growth of a CVD coating. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
