We propose a trajectory-based quasi-classical method for approximating dynamics in condensed phase systems. Building upon the previously developed optimized mean trajectory approximation that has been used to compute linear and nonlinear spectra, we borrow some ideas from filtering trajectory methods to obtain a novel semiclassical method for the dynamical propagation of density matrices. This new approximation is tested rigorously against standard multistate electronic models, spin-boson models, and models of the Fenna–Matthews–Olson complex. For dissipative systems, the current method is significantly better or as good as many other semiclassical methods available, especially at low temperatures and for off-diagonal density matrix elements, whereas for scattering models, the current method bears similar limitations as mean-field propagation schemes. All results are tested against the numerically exact hierarchical equations of motion method. The work is devoted to the application of various nonlinear dynamics methods to identify interactions in short noisy time series extracted from biological rhythms related to the respiratory, cardiovascular and nervous systems. These interactions are considered as transitions to synchronized states, as the coupling directionality and the delay time in the influence of one system on another. For the analyzed data, the relationship between these rhythms is due to the fact that the neurons of medulla are related to the brain response to changes in blood pressure and respiration during external pain stimulation. Phase synchronization between the variability of blood pressure and respiratory fluctuations in response to these stimuli was established in half of the analyzed time series using methods for assessing phase synchronization based on finding instantaneous phases by the synchrosqueezed wavelet transform and based on calculating the recurrences of phase trajectories. For unsynchronized time series, a predominantly unidirectional influence of respiratory rhythm fluctuations on the blood pressure variability was obtained by the method of phase dynamics modeling and the method of estimating recurrence probabilities. For two third of the data, a unidirectional influence of the blood pressure variability on the neuronal variability was determined, and the remaining data were characterized by a bidirectional relationship between the neuronal and blood pressure variability. Delay time estimation by phase dynamics modeling showed reduced time of influence of the blood pressure variability on the neuronal variability in bidirectional coupling compared to the influence of the neuronal variability on the blood pressure variability. Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is a crucial technique to prepare high-quality graphene because of its controllability. In the research, we perform a systematic computational fluid dynamics numerical investigation on the effect of gas-phase reaction dynamics on the graphene growth in a horizontal tube CVD reactor. The research results indicate that the gas-phase chemical reactions in the CVD reactor are in a nonequilibrium state, as evidenced by the comparison of species mole fraction distributions during the CVD process and under chemical equilibrium conditions. The effect of gas-phase reaction dynamics on the deposition rate of graphene under different conditions is studied, and our research shows that the main causes of change in graphene growth rates under different conditions are gas-phase reaction dynamics and active species transport. The results of numerical simulation agree well with the experimental phenomena. The research results also indicate that, for methane, the main limiting factor of graphene growth is the surface kinetic reaction rate. Conversely, for active species, the main limiting factor of graphene growth is species transport. Our research suggests that the growth rate of graphene can be regulated from the perspective of the gas reaction mechanism. The impact of the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) on India's intraseasonal and interannual variability of rainfall has been investigated in this study. Anomalous MJO amplitude points from 1979 to 2021 are classified into post-, pre- and normal onset years of the Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM). High MJO amplitudes, particularly those exceeding three standard deviations from the mean, correlate with significant rainfall anomalies, affecting both the timing and intensity of the monsoon. Specific MJO phases contribute differently to rainfall patterns, with phases 3, 4, and 5 generally suppressing rainfall, while phases 1 and 8 enhance it. Pre-onset years show significant rainfall anomalies driven by strong MJO activity, particularly during phases 3, 4, and 5. Normal onset years exhibit notable suppression and enhancement patterns, with significant fluctuations observed in 1996 and 2020. Post-onset years have the highest frequency of anomalies, with phases 3 and 4 prominently influencing rainfall variability. Overall, this research underscores the critical role of MJO dynamics in modulating rainfall variability in India. The findings suggest that understanding MJO phases can improve rainfall predictability and monsoon onset forecasting, aiding in better climate prediction and water resource management. Real-time detection of intermediate species and final products at the surface and near-surface in interfacial solid–gas reactions is critical for an accurate understanding of heterogeneous reaction mechanisms. In this article, an experimental method that can simultaneously monitor the ultrafast dynamics at the surface and above the surface in photoinduced heterogeneous reactions is presented. This method relies on a combination of mass spectrometry and femtosecond pump–probe spectroscopy. As a model system, the photoinduced reaction of methyl iodide on and above a cerium oxide surface is investigated. The species that are simultaneously detected from the surface and gas-phase present distinct features in the mass spectra, such as a sharp peak followed by an adjacent broad shoulder. The sharp peak is attributed to the species detected from the surface, while the broad shoulder is due to the detection of gas-phase species above the surface, as confirmed by multiple experiments. By monitoring the evolution of the sharp peak and broad shoulder as a function of the pump–probe time delay, transient signals are obtained that describe the ultrafast photoinduced reaction dynamics of methyl iodide on the surface and in the gas-phase. By measuring the current–voltage characteristics and the switching current distributions as a function of temperature, we have investigated the phase dynamics of Al tunnel ferromagnetic Josephson junctions (JJs), designed to fall in the typical range of parameters of state-of-the-art transmons, providing evidence of phase diffusion processes. The comparison with the experimental outcomes on non-magnetic JJs with nominally the same electrodynamical parameters demonstrates that the introduction of ferromagnetic barriers does not cause any sizeable detrimental effect and supports the notion of including tunnel ferromagnetic JJs in qubit architectures. The method of identifying the direction of the coupling between oscillators based on the simulation of phase dynamics of weakly coupled and weakly noisy periodic processes is used to determine the direction of the coupling between time series extracted from biological signals. The third-order response lies at the heart of simulating and interpreting nonlinear spectroscopies ranging from two-dimensional infrared (2D-IR) to 2D electronic (2D-ES), and 2D sum frequency generation (2D-SFG). The extra time and frequency dimensions in these spectroscopic techniques provide access to rich information on the electronic and vibrational states present, the coupling between them, and the resulting rates at which they exchange energy that are obscured in linear spectroscopy, particularly for condensed phase systems that usually contain many overlapping features. While the exact quantum expression for the third-order response is well established, it is incompatible with the methods that are practical for calculating the atomistic dynamics of large condensed phase systems. These methods, which include both classical mechanics and quantum dynamics methods that retain quantum statistical properties while obeying the symmetries of classical dynamics, such as LSC-IVR, centroid molecular dynamics, and Ring Polymer Molecular Dynamics (RPMD), naturally provide short-time approximations to the multi-time symmetrized Kubo transformed correlation function. Here, we show how the third-order response can be formulated in terms of equilibrium symmetrized Kubo transformed correlation functions. We demonstrate the utility and accuracy of our approach by showing how it can be used to obtain the third-order response of a series of model systems using both classical dynamics and RPMD. In particular, we show that this approach captures features such as anharmonically induced vertical splittings and peak shifts while providing a physically transparent framework for understanding multidimensional spectroscopies. The primary objective of this paper is to design and assess the performance of conventional Proportional Integral Derivative (PID), Internal Model Controller (IMC), and IMCbased PID controllers tailored for Hydro Turbine Power Systems (HTPS) exhibiting Non-Minimum Phase (NMP) dynamics. The focus is on overcoming the limitations of existing approaches in handling such complex system dynamics. Existing literature underscores the difficulty of crafting controllers for such systems. The current study represents a sincere endeavour to design and evaluate the performance of conventional Proportional Integral and Derivative (PID), Internal Model Controller (IMC), and IMCbased PID controllers tailored for HTPS characterized by NMP behaviour. The design case study and simulations were conducted using MATLAB and Simulink. The closed-loop responses of HTPS with PID, IMC, and IMC-PID are presented, and the controller performances are scrutinized in both time and frequency domains. To validate the effectiveness of the controllers, performance indices such as Integrated Squared Error (ISE), Integrated Absolute Error (IAE), Integrated Time-weighted Absolute Error (ITAE), Integrated Time Squared Error (ITSE) are calculated, as well as control efforts are calculated using 2-norm and infinity-norms. These performance indices and control effort norms offer a comprehensive evaluation of the controllers' performance in terms of minimizing error, handling system dynamics, and optimizing control effort across different time scales. Analysing these metrics aids in selecting and refining controllers for optimal performance in HTPS with NMP behaviour. Our findings illustrate that IMCbased PID controllers exhibit superior performance compared to conventional PID controllers in effectively handling the Non- Minimum Phase (NMP) dynamics of Hydro Turbine Power Systems (HTPS). Characterizing the brain's dynamic pattern of response to an input in electroencephalography (EEG) is not a trivial task due to the entanglement of the complex spontaneous brain activity. In this context, the brain's response can be defined as (1) the additional neural activity components generated after the input or (2) the changes in the ongoing spontaneous activities induced by the input. Moreover, the response can be manifested in multiple features. Three commonly studied examples of features are (1) transient temporal waveform, (2) time–frequency representation, and (3) phase dynamics. The most extensively used method of average event-related potentials (ERPs) captures the first one, while the latter two and other more complex features are attracting increasing attention. However, there has not been much work providing a systematic illustration and guidance for how to effectively exploit multifaceted features in neural cognitive research. Based on a visual oddball ERPs dataset with 200 participants, this work demonstrates how the information from the above-mentioned features are complementary to each other and how they can be integrated based on stereotypical neural-network-based machine learning approaches to better exploit neural dynamic information in basic and applied cognitive research. Methanol is one of the most abundant interstellar Complex Organic Molecules (iCOMs) and represents a major building block for the synthesis of increasingly complex oxygen-containing molecules. The reaction between protonated methanol and its neutral counterpart, giving protonated dimethyl ether, $ \require{mhchem} \ce{(CH3)2OH+} $ (CH 3 ) 2 OH + , along with the ejection of a water molecule, has been proposed as a key reaction in the synthesis of dimethyl ether in space. Here, gas phase vibrational spectra of the $ \ce{(CH3)2OH+} $ (CH 3 ) 2 OH + reaction product and the $ \ce{[C2H9O2]+} $ [ C 2 H 9 O 2 ] + intermediate complex(es), formed under different pressure and temperature conditions, are presented. The widely tunable free electron laser for infrared experiments, FELIX, was employed to record these vibrational fingerprint spectra using different types of infrared action spectroscopy in the 600-1700 cm $ ^{-1} $ − 1 frequency range, complemented with measurements using an OPO/OPA system to cover the $ \ce{O-H} $ O − H stretching region $ 3400-3700\,{\rm cm}^{-1} $ 3400 − 3700 c m − 1 . The formation of protonated dimethyl ether as a product of the reaction is spectroscopically confirmed, providing the first gas-phase vibrational spectrum of this potentially relevant astrochemical ion. Preparation of neutral non-volatile molecules intact in the gas phase for mass spectrometry or chemical dynamics experiments remains a challenge for many classes of molecules. Here, we report the design and characterization of a fiber-coupled laser-based thermal desorption source capable of preparing intact neutral molecules at high molecular densities in the gas phase for use in velocity-map imaging experiments. Within this source, the sample is deposited onto a thin tantalum foil. Irradiation of the foil from the reverse side by a focused laser beam leads to highly localized heating of the sample, resulting in desorption of a plume of molecules into the gas phase. The fiber-coupled design simplifies the alignment of the desorption laser beam, and the ability to rotate the foil relative to the fixed laser beam allows the sample to be continually refreshed under vacuum. We use 118 nm photoionization of three test molecules—uracil, adenine, and phenylalanine—to characterize the source and to demonstrate various aspects of its performance. These include the dependence of the velocity-map imaging performance on the size of the interaction region and the dependence of the laser-induced desorption source emission on desorption laser power and heating time. Signal levels recorded in these measurements are comparable to those we typically obtain in similar experiments using a pulsed supersonic molecular beam, and we, therefore, believe that the source has considerable potential for use in a wide range of chemical dynamics and other experiments. We investigate the unbiased model for money exchanges with collective debt limit: agents give at random time a dollar to one another as long as they have at least one dollar or they can borrow a dollar from a central bank if the bank is not empty. Surprisingly, this dynamic eventually leads to an asymmetric Laplace distribution of wealth (conjectured in [N. Xi, N. Ding, and Y. Wang, Phys. A, 357 (2005), pp. 543--555] and shown formally in a recent work [N. Lanchier and S. Reed, J. Stat. Phys., 176 (2019), pp. 1115--1137]). In this manuscript, we carry out a formal mean-field limit as the number of agents goes to infinity where we uncover a two-phase ODE dynamic. Convergence towards the unique equilibrium (two-sided geometric) distribution in the large time limit is also shown and the role played by the bank and debt (in terms of Gini index or wealth inequality) will be explored numerically as well. The phase reduction approach has manifested its efficacy in investigating synchronization behaviors in limit-cycle oscillators. However, spatial distributions of the phase value on the limit cycle may lead to illusions of synchronizations for oscillators close to bifurcations. In this paper, we compared the phase sensitivity function in the spatial domain and time domain for oscillators close to saddle-node homoclinic (SNH) bifurcation, also known as saddle-node bifurcation on an invariant circle. It was found that the phase sensitivity function in the spatial domain can show the phase accumulation feature on the limit cycle, which can be ignored in the phase sensitivity function in the time domain. As an example, the synchronization distributions of uncoupled SNH oscillators driven by common and independent noises were investigated, where the space-dependent coupling function was considered on common noise. We analyzed growth trajectories recorded in the tree-ring series of Norway spruce Picea abies (L.) H. Karst. and silver fir Abies alba Mill. co-occuring with European beech Fagus sylvatica L. in old-growth forests driven by natural stand dynamics. The study sites were localized in five old-growth stands in the Western Carpathians (Central Europe). We characterized the life histories of 218 individual trees by using 25 metrics which refer to the age of the trees, number of release events, reaction to releases, radial increment and basal area increment. We found a large variation in the dbh-age relationship. The life histories of most trees included two or three (in single cases up to seven) release events. We did not find tree age as an important factor in determining post-release growth response. The maximal basal area increment was frequently registered at the terminal stage of tree life. The life histories of spruces and firs did not significantly differ. We concluded that in natural forests driven by gap-phase dynamics, the history of release events is the primary driver of tree growth and that tree age plays a secondary role. After reaching the overstory, trees can continue growing without significant symptoms of aging until extrinsic forces cause their death. Our results indicate that in the studied ecosystem the persistence of less shade-tolerant spruce is not attributable to the niche differentiation and site partitioning mechanism. Partial synchronous states appear between full synchrony and asynchrony and exhibit many interesting properties. Most frequently, these states are studied within the framework of phase approximation. The latter is used ubiquitously to analyze coupled oscillatory systems. Typically, the phase dynamics description is obtained in the weak coupling limit, i.e., in the first-order in the coupling strength. The extension beyond the first-order represents an unsolved problem and is an active area of research. In this paper, three partially synchronous states are investigated and presented in order of increasing complexity. First, the usage of the phase response curve for the description of macroscopic oscillators is analyzed. To achieve this, the response of the mean-field oscillations in a model of all-to-all coupled limit-cycle oscillators to pulse stimulation is measured. The next part treats a two-group Kuramoto model, where the interaction of one attractive and one repulsive group results in an interesting solitary state, situated between full synchrony and self-consistent partial synchrony. In the last part, the phase dynamics of a relatively simple system of three Stuart-Landau oscillators are extended beyond the weak coupling limit. The resulting model contains triplet terms in the high-order phase approximation, though the structural connections are only pairwise. This study presents the detailed characterization of a magnetron-based Ar–N2 plasma discharge used to sputter a liquid Ga target for the deposition of gallium nitride (GaN) thin films. By utilizing in situ diagnostic techniques including optical emission spectroscopy and microwave interferometry, we determine different temperatures (rotational and vibrational of N2 molecules, and electronic excitation of Ar atoms) and electron density, respectively. Beyond providing insights into fundamental plasma physics, our research establishes a significant correlation between gas-phase dynamics, particularly those of gallium atoms (flux and average energy at the substrate) and deposited GaN thin film properties (growth rate and crystalline fraction). These findings underscore the role of plasma conditions in enhancing thin film quality, highlighting the importance of plasma characterization in understanding and optimizing GaN thin film growth processes. We present a simple model for a patch antenna based on metamaterial concepts operating in the microwave region with a bandwidth of 1.9-2.6 GHz. The small size and the relatively large operational band make this device exploitable for electromagnetic energy harvesting in urban environments. Describing the antenna by an equivalent circuit composed of a transmission line having right/left hand properties with a RC load, we can properly account for the phase dynamics in correspondence of resonances characterized by a specific handedness. Batch production of continuous and uniform graphene films is critical for the application of graphene. Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) has shown great promise for mass producing high-quality graphene films. However, the critical factors affected the uniformity of graphene films during the batch production need to be further studied. Herein, we propose a method for batch production of uniform graphene films by controlling the gaseous carbon source to be uniformly distributed near the substrate surface. By designing the growth space of graphene into a rectangular channel structure, we adjusted the velocity of feedstock gas flow to be uniformly distributed in the channel, which is critical for uniform graphene growth. The monolayer graphene film grown inside the rectangular channel structure shows high uniformity with average sheet resistance of 345 Ω sq−1 without doping. The experimental and simulation results show that the placement of the substrates during batch growth of graphene films will greatly affect the distribution of gas-phase dynamics near the substrate surface and the growth process of graphene. The current phase retrieval methods are challenging to retrieve the internal phase of soliton molecules (SMs) in the normal-dispersion regime of mode-locked lasers because the interference-like spectrum of such SMs is extremely dense. Here, we first retrieve phase evolutions of such SMs, by virtue of a novel phase retrieval method (Nat. Commun. 10, 830 (2019)). Three types of phase evolutions of SMs are revealed. The Aharonov–Bohm effect can be described as a phase difference in interfering charged particles that travel through two distinct pathways oppositely surrounding a perpendicularly-positioned solenoid. The magnetic field emanates from the solenoid but does not intersect the pathways. On the other hand, the Kuramoto model can be used to identify the synchronization conditions that lead to a particular phase difference by treating the phases as coupled oscillators. Starting with the overall wave function expression for the electron in an Aharonov–Bohm potential, we derive a version of the Kuramoto model describing the phase dynamics of the bound state of the quantum mechanical system. We show that the resulting synchronization condition of the model coincides with the allowable values of the flux parameter for our case to achieve an Aharonov–Bohm effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Due to its unique features, the flyback converter is widely used to convert DC to DC power. This converter has a non‐minimum phase (NMP) dynamic behavior, which is one of its most significant disadvantages. By changing the topology of the flyback converter to a forward‐flyback (FF) converter, the dynamic behavior of the converter can be minimum phase (MP) while the main advantages of the flyback converter such as isolation of the output from the input and simple topology are maintained. This article proposes an innovative FF converter topology by doubling the forward path and adding only one diode and one capacitor. In addition to better dynamic behavior, the proposed double FF (DFF) converter has the same advantages as the conventional FF converter. A new method is used to obtain the transfer function of the output voltage to the duty cycle of the proposed converter. The converter is designed in continuous conduction mode (CCM) with minimum phase dynamics. Finally, simulation and experimental results of both conventional FF and the proposed DFF converters are obtained and compared to validate the superiority of the proposed converter. Since the implementation of unconventional monetary policies (UMPs) by the US in response to the global financial crisis (GFC) and the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been increasing concerns that these forward guidance and quantitative easing programmes have had spillover effects on global equity markets. We specifically question whether the implementation of these UMPs have had spillovers to African equities, which have been previously speculated to be decoupled from global markets and shocks. Time-varying-parameter (TVP) frequency connectedness and wavelet coherency methods were used to examine the dynamic time-frequency spillovers between daily time series of the US shadow short rate and African equities returns/volatility between 1 January 2007 and 31 March 2023. On one hand, the TVP frequency connectedness analysis reveals robust long-run spillovers from US monetary policy to African equity markets during specific periods: 2009, 2013, 2020, and 2021. These coincide with instances when the Federal Reserve announced their transition from conventional to unconventional monetary practices and vice versa. On the other hand, the wavelet analysis provides insights into the 'sign' of the spillovers, indicating mixed phase dynamics during UMPs responding to the GFC. In contrast, anti-phase or negative co-movements characterize UMPs implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic, implying that these policies increased both returns and volatilities to African equities. Altogether, we conclude that US UMP has increasing deteriorated market efficiency and amplified portfolio risk in African equities whilst during 'normalization' periods US monetary policy has little transmission effect. The Structure and TOpology Replica Molecular Mechanics (STORMM) code is a next-generation molecular simulation engine and associated libraries optimized for performance on fast, vectorized central processor units and graphics processing units (GPUs) with independent memory and tens of thousands of threads. STORMM is built to run thousands of independent molecular mechanical calculations on a single GPU with novel implementations that tune numerical precision, mathematical operations, and scarce on-chip memory resources to optimize throughput. The libraries are built around accessible classes with detailed documentation, supporting fine-grained parallelism and algorithm development as well as copying or swapping groups of systems on and off of the GPU. A primary intention of the STORMM libraries is to provide developers of atomic simulation methods with access to a high-performance molecular mechanics engine with extensive facilities to prototype and develop bespoke tools aimed toward drug discovery applications. In its present state, STORMM delivers molecular dynamics simulations of small molecules and small proteins in implicit solvent with tens to hundreds of times the throughput of conventional codes. The engineering paradigm transforms two of the most memory bandwidth-intensive aspects of condensed-phase dynamics, particle–mesh mapping, and valence interactions, into compute-bound problems for several times the scalability of existing programs. Numerical methods for compressing and streamlining the information present in stored coordinates and lookup tables are also presented, delivering improved accuracy over methods implemented in other molecular dynamics engines. Reynolds stress is a key facet of turbulence self-organization. In the magnetized plasmas of controlled fusion devices, the zonal flows that are driven by the averaged Reynolds stress modify the confinement performance. We address this problem with full-f gyrokinetic simulations of ion temperature gradient-driven turbulence. From the detailed analysis of the three-dimensional electric potential and transverse pressure fields, we show that the diamagnetic contribution to the Reynolds stress—stemming from finite Larmor radius effects—exceeds the electrostatic contribution by a factor of about two. Both contributions are in phase, indicating that pressure does not behave as a passive scalar. In addition, the Reynolds stress induced by the electric drift velocity is found to be mainly governed by the gradient of the phase of the electric potential modes rather than by their magnitude. By decoupling Reynolds stress drive and turbulence intensity, this property indicates that a careful analysis of phase dynamics is crucial in the interpretation of experiments and simulations. The complicated chemical vapour deposition (CVD) is currently the most viable method of producing graphene. Most studies have extensively focused on chemical aspects either through experiments or computational studies. However, gas-phase dynamics in CVD reportedly plays an important role in improving graphene quality. Given that mass transport is the rate-limiting step for graphene deposition in atmospheric-pressure CVD (APCVD), the interfacial phenomena at the gas–solid interface (i.e., the boundary layer) are a crucial controlling factor. Accordingly, only by understanding and controlling the boundary-layer thickness can uniform full-coverage graphene deposition be achieved. In this study, a simplified computational fluid dynamics analysis of APCVD was performed to investigate gas-phase dynamics during deposition. Boundary-layer thickness was also estimated through the development of a customised homogeneous gas model. Interfacial phenomena, particularly the boundary layer and mass transport within it, were studied. The effects of Reynolds number on these factors were explored and compared with experimentally obtained results of the characterised graphene deposit. The study of hyperbolic waves involves various notions which help characterise how these structures evolve. One important facet is the notion of genuine nonlinearity, namely the ability for shocks and rarefactions to form instead of contact discontinuities. In the context of the Whitham modulation equations, this paper demonstrate that a loss of genuine nonlinearity leads to the appearance of a dispersive set of dynamics in the form of the modified Korteweg de-Vries equation governing the evolution of the waves instead. Its form is universal in the sense that its coefficients can be written entirely using linear properties of the underlying waves such as the conservation laws and linear dispersion relation. This insight is applied to two systems of physical interest, one an optical model and the other a stratified hydrodynamics experiment, to demonstrate how it can be used to provide insight into how waves in these systems evolve when genuine nonlinearity is lost. Featured Application: Quantitative phase imaging (QPI) and holographic microscopy (HM) are suitable methods for long-term and label-free imaging of cells and for the complex evaluation of cellular morphological and dynamical parameters under different treatments. Our results suggest that HM within advanced image analysis is capable of correctly distinguishing between subtle changes in cell motility, cell dry mass, cell density, and cell death induced by blue light. As quantitative phase dynamics of the cell population is typical for specific processes in cells, it may be useful for viability tests and medical drugs evaluation. In particular, mapping of the quantitative phase changes during the time seems to be very promising in the determination of various morphological phenomena related to cell death, because the responsible cell death molecular machinery typically changes the distribution of the cell mass. Increased exposition to blue light may induce many changes in cell behavior and significantly affect the critical characteristics of cells. Here we show that multimodal holographic microscopy (MHM) within advanced image analysis is capable of correctly distinguishing between changes in cell motility, cell dry mass, cell density, and cell death induced by blue light. We focused on the effect of blue light with a wavelength of 485 nm on morphological and dynamical parameters of four cell lines, malignant PC-3, A2780, G361 cell lines, and the benign PNT1A cell line. We used MHM with blue light doses 24 mJ/cm2, 208 mJ/cm2 and two kinds of expositions (500 and 1000 ms) to acquire real-time quantitative phase information about cellular parameters. It has been shown that specific doses of the blue light significantly influence cell motility, cell dry mass and cell density. These changes were often specific for the malignant status of tested cells. Blue light dose 208 mJ/cm2 × 1000 ms affected malignant cell motility but did not change the motility of benign cell line PNT1A. This light dose also significantly decreased proliferation activity in all tested cell lines but was not so deleterious for benign cell line PNT1A as for malignant cells. Light dose 208 mJ/cm2 × 1000 ms oppositely affected cell mass in A2780 and PC-3 cells and induced different types of cell death in A2780 and G361 cell lines. Objective: The objective of this study is to evaluate three‐dimensional vertical motion of the superior surface of the vocal folds in vivo in (a) typically developing children as a function of vocal frequency variations and (b) a child with vocal nodules. Methods: A custom developed laser endoscope coupled with high‐speed videoendoscopy was used to obtain 3D parameters from 2 healthy children, one child with vocal nodules, and 23 vocally healthy adults (females = 11, males = 12). Parameters of amplitude (mm), maximum opening/closing velocity (mm/s), and mean opening/closing velocity (mm/s) were computed for the lateral and vertical vibratory motion along the anterior, middle, and posterior sections of the vocal folds were computed. Results: We provide for the first time, absolute measurements of vertical amplitude and maximum/ mean velocity during the opening and closing phases, in vivo in children. Overall, the vertical motion was larger in vocally normal children compared with the lateral motion, especially along the visible posterior section of the vocal folds and during low pitch phonation. The opening phase dynamics were consistently large along the posterior section in the child with vocal nodules. Conclusions: The study findings establish the feasibility of capturing 3D motion in a clinical setting and provide proof of concept for the application of the proposed 3D laser in the pediatric population. Future large sample size studies are needed to establish the diagnostic potential of examining the closing phase vertical motion to evaluate vibratory development in children with normal voice and investigating the opening phase vertical motion in children with nodules. Compact laser interferometers with large dynamic range are one of the core emerging tools to improve low frequency performance in gravitational wave detectors by providing local displacement sensing with sub 1 pm Hz - 0.5 precision. Strong sinusoidal frequency modulations are used in such laser interferometers to create heterodyne-like photodetector signals from which the phase and other parameters, such as the absolute distance, can be extracted. The nested sinusoidal function in such signals is a challenge for the real-time parameter estimation in low-noise applications. In this article, we present an algorithm to calculate exact signal parameters in a non-iterative way from such interferometric signals. The algorithm makes use of a recurrence relation between Bessel functions to enable a direct extraction of modulation parameters from the signal. Additionally, the algorithm is capable of dealing with high phase dynamics where the Doppler-shift of the signal becomes relevant and can limit the range and precision of the parameter estimation, if not accounted for. Simulations show that the algorithm is computationally efficient, can be well parallelised and the phase estimation is close to optimal precision given by the Cramer–Rao lower bound of the signal parameters. Rapid launching is a crucial technology for the digitalization and regularization of space transportation systems. This paper focuses on the fast trajectory prediction of the launch-vehicle boost phase. A high-precision and high-efficiency analytical solution of the whole boost phase dynamics model of the rocket is obtained by adopting one of the regular perturbation methods called the state-space perturbation method in the launch rotated coordinate system. An analytical framework known as the perturbation expansion framework is proposed by first figuring out the correlation with the state variables/independent variables and then performing the approximate expansion. This framework can successfully address the issue of analytically solving the transfer matrix and integral term caused by the coupling and time-varying properties among state variables of the affine equations of the boost phase. The analytical solution developed in this paper has great fidelity and takes into account the combined effects of various factors, including thrust, aerodynamic force, Earth's gravity, oblateness, and rotation. The route to chaos and the phase dynamics of the large scales in a rotating shallow-water model have been rigorously examined through the construction of an autonomous five-mode Galerkin truncated system employing complex variables, useful in investigating how large/meso-scales are destabilized and how their dynamics evolves and transits to chaos. This investigation revealed two distinct transitions into chaotic behaviour as the level of energy introduced into the system was incrementally increased. The initial transition manifests through a succession of bifurcations that adhere to the established Feigenbaum sequence. Conversely, the subsequent transition, which emerges at elevated levels of injected energy, is marked by a pronounced shift from quasi-periodic states to chaotic regimes. The genesis of the first chaotic state is predominantly attributed to the preeminence of inertial forces in governing nonlinear interactions. The second chaotic state, however, arises from the augmented significance of free surface elevation in the dynamical process. A novel reformulation of the system, employing phase and amplitude representations for each truncated variable, elucidated that the phase components present a temporal piece-wise locking behaviour by maintaining a constant value for a protracted interval, preceding an abrupt transition characterised by a simple rotation of ±π, even as the amplitudes display chaotic behaviour. It was observed that the duration of phase stability diminishes with an increase in injected energy, culminating in the onset of chaos within the phase components at high energy levels. This phenomenon is attributed to the nonlinear term of the equations, wherein the phase components are introduced through linear combinations of triads encompassing disparate modes. When the locking durations vary across modes, the resultant dynamics is a stochastic interplay of multiple π phase shifts, generating a stochastic dynamic within the coupled phase triads, observable even at minimal energy injections. The two-step quench process of surface-directed spinodal decomposition is numerically investigated by coupling the Flory–Huggins–de Gennes equation with the Cahn–Hilliard–Cook equation. The phase dynamics and formation mechanisms of the wetting layer in two-step surface-directed spinodal decomposition have been concerned in detail. The results demonstrate that a parallel strip structure forms near the wetting layer and propagates into the bulk, when the first quench depth is very shallow and the bulk does not undergo phase separation, and the second quench depths are various points with deeper quench depths. In this case, the wetting layer turns to be unchangeable at the intermediate and later stages of the second quench process, compared to the growth with a time exponent 1/2 during the first quench process. When the first quench depth is deeper and phase separation occurs in the bulk during the first quench process, it is found that a deeper second quench depth can stimulate a more obvious secondary domain structure, and the formation mechanism of the wetting layer changes from logarithmic growth law to Lifshitz–Slyozov growth law. We investigate the quantum-phase dynamics of a dissipative molecular system interacting with a single-mode amplitude-squeezed field (with a sub-Poissonian photon-number distribution) using the Monte Carlo wave-function method. As quantum dissipation, we consider molecular coherent (phase) and population relaxations, which are caused by nuclear vibration, and cavity relaxation (the dissipation of an internal single mode to outer mode). In this study, we elucidate the effects of these dissipations on the unique quantum dynamical behaviors of this coupled system, e.g., collapse-revival behavior of Rabi oscillations, using the quasiprobability (Q function) distribution of a single-mode field and the off-diagonal molecular density matrix. It is found that although the amplitude-squeezed field exhibits a distinct revival with larger amplitudes of molecular population in the presence of the molecular phase and population relaxations as compared to the coherent field, a very slight cavity relaxation suppresses the revival of molecular population and the increase in the magnitude of off-diagonal molecular density matrices during the quiescent region in the amplitude-squeezed field case more significantly than in the coherent field case. These features are shown to be closely related to the difference in the dynamics of Q function distributions between amplitude-squeezed and coherent fields. © 2003 American Institute of Physics. time dependent thermal model for a superconducting constriction based weak-link (WL) is discussed for investigating the deterministic dynamics of its temperature and phase. A new dynamic regime is found where a non-zero voltage exists across the WL, and its temperature stabilizes between the bath temperature and superconductor's critical temperature. This regime exists over a limited bias current range and gives rise to a new hysteretic regime in current-voltage characteristics. Human color vision is achieved by mixing neural signals from cone photoreceptors sensitive to different wavelengths of light. The spatial arrangement and proportion of these spectral types in the retina set fundamental limits on color perception, and abnormal or missing types are responsible for color vision loss. Imaging provides the most direct and quantitative means to study these photoreceptor properties at the cellular scale in the living human retina, but remains challenging. Current methods rely on retinal densitometry to distinguish cone types, a prohibitively slow process. Here, we show that photostimulation-induced optical phase changes occur in cone cells and carry substantial information about spectral type, enabling cones to be differentiated with unprecedented accuracy and efficiency. Moreover, these phase dynamics arise from physiological activity occurring on dramatically different timescales (from milliseconds to seconds) inside the cone outer segment, thus exposing the phototransduction cascade and subsequent downstream effects. We captured these dynamics in cones of subjectswith normal color vision and a deuteranope, and at different macular locations by: (i) marrying adaptive optics to phase-sensitive optical coherence tomography to avoid optical blurring of the eye, (ii) acquiring images at high speed that samples phase dynamics at up to 3 KHz, and (iii) localizing phase changes to the cone outer segment, where photoactivation occurs. Our method should have broad appeal for color vision applications in which the underlying neural processing of photoreceptors is sought and for investigations of retinal diseases that affect cone function. We have studied both theoretically and experimentally how an LC series circuit connected in parallel to a Josephson junction influences the Josephson dynamics. The presence of the shell circuit introduces two energy scales, which in specific cases, can strongly differ from the plasma frequency of the isolated junction. Josephson junctions were manufactured using the Nb/Al-AlOx/Nb fabrication technology with various on-chip LC shunt circuits. Spectroscopic measurements in the quantum limit show excellent agreement with theory taking into account the shunt inductance and capacitance in the resistively and capacitively shunted junction model. The results clearly show that the dynamics of the system are two-dimensional, resulting in two resonant modes of the system. This paper considers the output consensus problem in non-minimum phase nonlinear multi-agent systems. The main contribution of the paper is to guarantee achieving consensus in the presence of unstable zero dynamics. To achieve this goal, a consensus protocol consisting of two terms is proposed. The first term is a linear function of the states of each agent employed in order to overcome the non-minimum phase dynamics, and the second term is a function of the output of neighbouring agents which provides coupling among agents and guarantees output consensus in the network. The asymptotic stability of output consensus errors and the boundedness of the states of agents are also studied. A numerical example is presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Purpose: The ecological environment of the Loess Plateau, China, is extremely fragile under the context of global warming. Over the past two decades, the vegetation of the Loess Plateau has undergone great changes. This paper aims to clarify the response mechanisms of vegetation to climate change, to provide support for the restoration and environmental treatment of vegetation on the Loess Plateau. Design/methodology/approach: The Savitsky–Golay (S-G) filtering algorithm was used to reconstruct time series of moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) 13A2 data. Combined with trend analysis and partial correlation analysis, the influence of climate change on the phenology and enhanced vegetation index (EVI) during the growing season was described. Findings: The S-G filtering algorithm is suitable for EVI reconstruction of the Loess Plateau. The date of start of growing season was found to gradually later along the Southeast–Northwest direction, whereas the date of the end of the growing season showed the opposite pattern and the length of the growing season gradually shortened. Vegetation EVI values decreased gradually from Southeast to Northwest. Vegetation changed significantly and showed clear differentiation according to different topographic factors. Vegetation correlated positively with precipitation from April to July and with temperature from August to November. Originality/value: This study provides technical support for ecological environmental assessment, restoration of regional vegetation coverage and environmental governance of the Loess Plateau over the past two decades. In this work, the scaling behavior of the sleep process is evaluated by using detrended fluctuation analysis based on wavelets. The analysis is carried out from arrivals of short and recurrent cortical events called A-phases, which in turn build up the Cyclic Alternating Pattern phenomenon, and are classified in three types: A1, A2 and A3. In this study, 61 sleep recordings corresponding to healthy, nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy patients and sleep-state misperception subjects, were analyzed. From the A-phase annotations, the onsets were extracted and a binary sequence with one second resolution was generated. An item in the sequence has a value of one if an A-phase onset occurs in the corresponding window, and a value of zero otherwise. In addition, we consider other different temporal resolutions from 2 s to 256 s. Furthermore, the same analysis was carried out for sequences obtained from the different types of A-phases and their combinations. The results of the numerical analysis showed a relationship between the time resolutions and the scaling exponents; specifically, for higher time resolutions a white noise behavior is observed, whereas for lower time resolutions a behavior towards to 1 / f -noise is exhibited. Statistical differences among groups were observed by applying various wavelet functions from the Daubechies family and choosing the appropriate sequence of A-phase onsets. This scaling analysis allows the characterization of the free-scale dynamic of the sleep process that is specific for each sleep condition. Protonated intermediates are postulated to be involved in the rate determining step of many sugar reactions. This paper presents a study of protonated sugar species, isolated in the gas phase, using a combination of infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy, classical ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) and quantum mechanical vibrational self-consistent field (VSCF) calculations. It provides a likely identification of the reactive intermediate oxocarbenium ion structure in a D -galactosyl system as well as the saccharide pyrolysis product anhydrogalactose (that suggests oxocarbenium ion stabilization), along with the spectrum of the protonated parent species: methyl D -galactopyranoside-H+. Its vibrational fingerprint indicates intramolecular proton sharing. Classical AIMD simulations for galactosyl oxocarbenium ions, conducted in the temperature range ∼300–350 K (using B3LYP potentials on-the-fly) reveal efficient transitions on the picosecond timescale. Multiple conformers are likely to exist under the experimental conditions and along with static VSCF calculations, they have facilitated the identification of the individual structural motifs of the galactosyl oxocarbenium ion and protonated anhydrogalactose ion conformers that contribute to the observed experimental spectra. These results demonstrate the power of experimental IRMPD spectroscopy combined with dynamics simulations and with computational spectroscopy at the anharmonic level to unravel conformer structures of protonated saccharides, and to provide information on their lifetimes. We report a systematic study of the transport properties of high critical temperature superconductor (HTS) biepitaxial Josephson junctions in the submicron range. Junction performances point to more uniform and reproducible devices and to better control of d-wave intrinsic properties. Outcomes promote novel insights into the transport mechanisms across grain boundaries and encourage further developments in the control of dissipation in HTS devices. The application of nanotechnology to HTS could be an additional tool to properly engineer the junction properties to match specific circuit design also in view of the integration into hybrid quantum circuits. The approximate quantum mechanical ring polymer molecular dynamics (RPMD) and linearized semiclassical initial value representation (LSC-IVR) methods are compared and contrasted in a study of the dynamics of the flexible q-TIP4P/F water model at room temperature. For this water model, a RPMD simulation gives a diffusion coefficient that is only a few percent larger than the classical diffusion coefficient, whereas a LSC-IVR simulation gives a diffusion coefficient that is three times larger. We attribute this discrepancy to the unphysical leakage of initially quantized zero point energy (ZPE) from the intramolecular to the intermolecular modes of the liquid as the LSC-IVR simulation progresses. In spite of this problem, which is avoided by construction in RPMD, the LSC-IVR may still provide a useful approximation to certain short-time dynamical properties which are not so strongly affected by the ZPE leakage. We illustrate this with an application to the liquid water dipole absorption spectrum, for which the RPMD approximation breaks down at frequencies in the O–H stretching region owing to contamination from the internal modes of the ring polymer. The LSC-IVR does not suffer from this difficulty and it appears to provide quite a promising way to calculate condensed phase vibrational spectra. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A recently developed spray Flamelet Generated Manifolds (SFGM) approach has been extended to include turbulence–chemistry interactions for studies of turbulent spray flames based on Eulerian–Lagrangian multiphase Large Eddy Simulation (LES). The Eulerian–Eulerian two-fluid formulation of the SFGM was extended to include the mixture fraction variance to construct a 4-D manifold library. The effect of heat loss due to droplet evaporation was considered in the SFGM tabulation, and the SFGM approach was evaluated using the Sydney ethanol spray flame experimental database. The two-phase interaction was investigated from complete analyses of the continuous- and dispersed-phase dynamics. Comparisons between the numerical results and the experimental data indicate that the SFGM formulated from counterflow spray flames can produce a good agreement with the gaseous flow field and the dispersed-phase statistics. By comparing the results in terms of the temperature field with other existing models, it can be inferred that the discrepancies between the flamelet-based results and the experimental data may not depend on the choice of the flamelet approach but on the modeling of the turbulence/chemistry interaction model. A Beta-function of the normalized progress variable can be an alternative to improve the temperature predictions. Moreover, using a well-designed definition of the progress variable by finding the optimal weights of several appropriate species is another possible path to improve the predictions.
