Nowadays, heavy metal toxicity is becoming a serious public health concern, and it requires an appropriate preventive and treatment strategy. In human population, long-term arsenic metal exposure aggravates the development of cancer and skin diseases. As per the Food and Drug Administration, the allowed level of arsenic content in food and pharmaceutical products is "closer to zero." Several researchers have significantly correlated the level of arsenic in human tissues to the severity of many diseases, including drug-resistant infections, COVID-19, diabetes mellitus, and disorders of brain, respiratory, reproductive, cardiovascular, and renal systems. Looking at curative approaches, phytoconstituents are known to mitigate arsenic toxicity through multiple mechanisms. Thus, phytochemical investigation against arsenic toxicity has become an important area of health research. The reported cellular mechanisms related to signaling pathway for attenuating arsenic toxicity are very impressive. Accordingly, this review presents the reported mechanisms of arsenic-induced toxicity and its mitigation by various phytoconstituents from in vitro, pre-clinical, and clinical studies. Therefore, this review will provide an optimistic way for researchers to design research on phytopharmaceuticals as attenuators of arsenic-induced toxicity in human population. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the clinical significance of E-cadherin expression levels in colorectal cancer tissues and explore the relationship between E-cadherin expression and tumor node metastasis (TNM) stage. The goal was to establish a more accurate prognostic prediction for colorectal cancer patients by analyzing E-cadherin expression levels alongside TNM staging. Methods: The study examined colorectal cancer patients by dividing them into groups based on E-cadherin expression levels. It then assessed their 5-year event-free survival (EFS) and disease-specific survival (DSS) hazard ratios (HRs). Additionally, the prognosis of patients was analyzed by combining E-cadherin expression levels with TNM staging, particularly focusing on patients in stages III and IV. Results: The E-cadherinLow group had significantly worse outcomes, with HRs of 2.30 for EFS and 2.76 for DSS compared to the E-cadherinHigh group. When combined with TNM stage III/IV, patients with E-cadherinLow expression showed a poor prognosis, with HRs of 1.93 for EFS and 2.35 for DSS compared to those with E-cadherinHigh expression at the same TNM stage. Conclusions: Low levels of E-cadherin expression are associated with a poor prognosis and decreased survival in colorectal cancer patients. Combining E-cadherin expression levels with TNM staging provides a more precise prediction of patient prognosis and survival, potentially guiding personalized treatment strategies. Background: Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) transforming to small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is one of the mechanisms of resistance to tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). Cases of NSCLC transforming into SCLC have been discovered. However, we lack concentrated data on the characteristics of this population and the transformed SCLC to aid our insight of the biology and clinical value of NSCLC transforming with positive. Methods: We systematically reviewed the published literatures and summarized the pathological and clinical characteristics, and the prognosis, of published cases. Results: 140 patients with lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) were included in this study, with a median age of 56.8 years. The median time from the first diagnosis of LUAD transforming to SCLC (ttSCLC) was 20.0 months. The median overall survival (mOS) after the diagnosis of SCLC was 11.0 months (95% CI, 7.41 to 14.59 months). In the univariate analysis, ever smoking (either former or current) was a promising predictor of a shorter ttSCLC (HR, 1.73; 95% CI, 1.14 to 2.62; P = 0.010). TKIs therapy administered as a second line and beyond treatment was related to a significant delay in SCLC onset compared to first-line therapy (HR, 0.62; 95% CI, 0.40 to 0.96; P = 0.031). The median progression-free survival (mPFS) on first-line platinum plus etoposide after the conversion to SCLC was 3.0 months. Female appeared to be related to worse outcomes after transformation of SCLC. Conclusion: Transformed SCLC exhibited poor response to primary SCLC classic chemotherapy and immunotherapy. With the development of hydraulic engineering such as harbor, channel and reclamation, more and more natural tidal flat turn into the semi-natural tidal flat (SNTF). How to evaluate ecosystem of semi-natural tidal flat is a scientific problem that has not been fully solved. The study tries to assess ecosystem health change of SNTF adjoining Hengsha East Shoal training dike in the Yangtze estuary. The study found SNTF area > 0m isobaths increased from 30.33 km2 in 2010–2014 to 46.66 km2 in 2014–2017 and to 56.84 km2 in 2017–2020, and the Hengsha Shoal region.0m, -2m and -5m isobaths increased from 174.78 km2, 303.82 km2, and 556.77 km2 in 2010–2014 to 233.34 km2, 365.59 km2, and 596.83 km2 in 2014–2017 and to 243.81 km2, 363.27 km2 and 567.45 km2 in 2017–2020. Using database of 3 pressure indicators, 16 state indicators and 3 response indicators, the study combined pressure-state-response (PSR) model and fuzzy comprehensive evaluation (FCE), constructed a systematic evaluation method of ecosystem health of semi-natural tidal flat. The evaluation result found the ecosystem health of SNTF of Hengsha East Shoal was rated as "Fair" level during 2010–2020, and the summation of comprehensive evaluation index (CEI) increased from 0.4009 in 2010–2014 to 0.4703 in 2014–2017 due to the rapid expansion of tidal flat vegetation, and then decreased to 0.4450 in 2017–2020 due to a reduction in vegetation area caused by erosion. The area of salt marsh vegetation plays an important role in the health of wetland ecosystems. The Hengsha East Shoal ecosystem is undergoing a quickly dynamic evolution processes, long-term series monitoring and further research for this area are necessary to guide its future development according to the tidal flat utilization patterns. Background: Prostate cancer (PCa) was the most common noncutaneous cancer among Nigerian men in 2020. Despite this high incidence, documented rates may be an underestimation. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the hospital incidence rate, trends, and characterise the clinicopathologic features, and treatment outcomes of patients with PCa in our institution. Materials and Methods: A 5-year retrospective review of patients managed for PCa at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Lokoja (FTHL), Nigeria, from 2016 to 2020. Medical abstraction was done on clinicopathologic features, treatment received, serum prostate specific antigen (PSA) at diagnosis, 3, and 7 months of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). Data obtained were analysed using SPSS 25, and trends analysis of the annual incidence rate and number of patients with PCa in the period was done using joinpoint regression modelling. Results: Of 89 patients, 83 had complete medical records. The average annual hospital incidence rate was 174/100,000, and the mean age at diagnosis was 70.4 years. Locally advanced disease was found in 81.9% of patients, and tumours were ISUP grade groups 4 and 5 in 54.2% of patients. ADT was done in 62.6% of the patients, while 28.9% of the patients defaulted after diagnosis. The mean serum PSA was 71.9 ng/mL (7.7–156) at diagnosis and was 11.1 ng/mL (0.1–102) and 15.3 ng/mL at 3 and 7 months of ADT, respectively. Only 40.6% of the treated patients had a serum PSA ≤ 4 ng/mL at 7 months of ADT. Conclusions: Patients with PCa in FTHL, Nigeria, have mostly locally advanced disease at diagnosis. Over half have a high-grade pattern and fail to achieve a serum PSA ≤ 4 ng/mL after 7 months of ADT. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Despite the recognition of the impact of Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) on learning engagement, research conclusions remain inconsistent. This inconsistency may be due to a lack of exploration of the underlying mechanisms and the singularity of research perspectives. Methods: Drawing from motivational dynamics model for learning engagement, this study investigated the relationship between FoMO and learning engagement from both variable-centered and person-centered perspectives, and further explored the mediating role of self-control. A total of 1,510 college students from eastern China were selected via an online platform, including 642 males and 868 females. Results: The results from the variable-centered analysis indicated that FoMO had a significant positive direct effect on learning engagement (effect = 0.293, 95% CI = [0.185, 0.401]). FoMO negatively predicted self-control, which in turn had a negative impact on learning engagement (effect = -0.375, 95% CI = [-0.456, -0.295]). This suggests that self-control acts as a masking effect between FoMO and learning engagement. The person-centered results suggest the presence of four latent profiles of FoMO: the low trait-FoMO low state-FoMO group, the high trait-FoMO low state-FoMO group, the low trait-FoMO high state-FoMO group, and the high trait-FoMO high state-FoMO group. Specifically, compared to the low trait-FoMO low state-FoMO group, self-control acts as a masking role between the low trait-FoMO high state-FoMO group, the high trait-FoMO high state-FoMO group and learning engagement. Conclusions: FoMO exhibits a "dual-edged sword effect". Educators should adopt diverse instructional methods to leverage the positive aspects of FoMO while guiding students in self-control training to mitigate its negative effects to enhance college students' learning engagement. Background: Metastasis is one of the main factors leading to the high mortality rate of gastric cancer. The current monitoring methods are not able to accurately monitor gastric cancer metastasis. Methods: In this paper, we constructed a new type of hollow Mn 3 O 4 nanocomposites, Mn 3 O 4 @HMSN-Cy7.5-FA, which had a size distribution of approximately 100 nm and showed good stability in different liquid environments. The in vitro magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) results show that the nanocomposite has good response effects to the acidic microenvironment of tumors. The acidic environment can significantly enhance the contrast of T 1 -weighted MRI. The cellular uptake and endocytosis results show that the nanocomposite has good targeting capabilities and exhibits good biosafety, both in vivo and in vitro. In a gastric cancer nude mouse orthotopic metastatic tumor model, with bioluminescence imaging's tumor location information, we realized in vivo MRI/fluorescence imaging (FLI) guided precise monitoring of the gastric cancer orthotopic and metastatic tumors with this nanocomposite. Results: This report demonstrates that Mn 3 O 4 @HMSN-Cy7.5-FA nanocomposites is a promising nano-diagnostic platform for the precision diagnosis and therapy of gastric cancer metastasis in the future. Conclusions: In vivo MRI/FLI imaging results show that the nanocomposites can achieve accurate monitoring of gastric cancer tumors in situ and metastases. BLI's tumor location information further supports the good accuracy of MRI/FLI dual-modality imaging. The above results show that the MHCF NPs can serve as a good nano-diagnostic platform for precise in vivo monitoring of tumor metastasis. Fish is an important source of animal food for humans because it contains essential nutrients that are easily absorbed by the body. However, the intensification of aquaculture can be harmful to the fish, making them more susceptible to reduced diseases and slow growth. The excessive use of antibiotics is a major concern as it can lead to the accumulation of antibiotic residue in the fish. As a result, many countries have banned the use of antibiotics in fish feed. Phytobiotics, derived from various plant sources, have gained importance as additives in fish feeds and are seen as a promising alternative to antibiotics due to the presence of various bioactive compounds that have the potential to enhance fish production and health. The bioactive compounds present in plant sources such as essential oils, microalgae, seaweed, medicinal plants, and seeds, like Aloe vera and licorice, offer a wide range of beneficial effects in promoting growth, antimicrobial activity, antioxidant properties, and immunostimulant. The main topics of this review highlighted the various sources of phytobiotics, their mode of action, their effects on growth performance, and their therapeutic effects in fish. While phytobiotics have low bioavailability, exposure to them has shown positive effects on organs and several tissues in fish. This present article is also designed to provide an insightful information about the administration of phytobiotics and its bioavailability in fish. Objectives: To investigate the effect of aripiprazole on prolactin levels in patients with schizophrenia and analyze whether varying baseline prolactin levels affect the effectiveness and safety of aripiprazole, in a real-life diagnostic and therapeutic setting in a post-hoc analysis. Methods: In this post-hoc analysis, patients with schizophrenia in the acute phase were divided into an elevated-prolactin group and a normal-prolactin group. After 8 weeks of aripiprazole treatment, changes in the proportion of patients with an abnormal prolactin level were analyzed in both groups, and the efficacy and safety of aripiprazole were compared between the two groups. Results: The elevated-prolactin group had more women, a longer duration of disease, and lower Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) total and subscale scores at baseline compared with the normal-prolactin group (all P < 0.05), and there was no significant difference in the proportion of patients with prior use of antipsychotic medication between the two groups. Regardless of previous antipsychotic use, patients in both groups developed hyperprolactinemia (23/168 [13.7%] in those who had taken antipsychotics vs. 43/375 [11.4%] in those who had not). After 8 weeks of aripiprazole treatment, the proportion of patients with abnormal prolactin in the elevated-prolactin group significantly decreased with prolonged treatment (P < 0.001), and aripiprazole had no significant effect on the normal-prolactin group (P = 0.250). Normalprolactin group showed better efficacy than the elevated-prolactin group, and the differences in efficacy between the two groups was observed from week 4 to the endpoint (all p<0.05). In total, 87.2% (68/78) patients experienced mild to moderate adverse events in the elevated-prolactin group, which was significantly more frequent compared with the normal-prolactin group 71.0% (365/514). Conclusions: In this real-world study, for patients with acute schizophrenia, aripiprazole was effective in lowering the proportion of patients with abnormal prolactin levels, while it had no significant effect on patients with normal baseline prolactin. After adjusting for factors such as sex, age, prior antipsychotic drugs use history and disease severity, effectiveness and safety of aripiprazole in patients with normal baseline prolactin was significantly better than that in patients with elevated baseline prolactin. Pediatric cancer remains the leading cause of disease-related death among children aged 1–14 years. A few risk factors have been conclusively identified, including exposure to pesticides, high-dose radiation, and specific genetic syndromes, but the etiology underlying most events remains unknown. The tumor microenvironment (TME) includes stromal cells, vasculature, fibroblasts, adipocytes, and different subsets of immunological cells. TME plays a crucial role in carcinogenesis, cancer formation, progression, dissemination, and resistance to therapy. Moreover, autophagy seems to be a vital regulator of the TME and controls tumor immunity. Autophagy is an evolutionarily conserved intracellular process. It enables the degradation and recycling of long-lived large molecules or damaged organelles using the lysosomal-mediated pathway. The multifaceted role of autophagy in the complicated neoplastic TME may depend on a specific context. Autophagy may function as a tumor-suppressive mechanism during early tumorigenesis by eliminating unhealthy intracellular components and proteins, regulating antigen presentation to and by immune cells, and supporting anti-cancer immune response. On the other hand, dysregulation of autophagy may contribute to tumor progression by promoting genome damage and instability. This perspective provides an assortment of regulatory substances that influence the features of the TME and the metastasis process. Mesenchymal cells in bone and soft-tissue sarcomas and their signaling pathways play a more critical role than epithelial cells in childhood and youth. Green technology innovation (GTI) and environmental regulation (ER) hold the key to promoting the transformation of industrial structure. Based on the regional panel data of China, this is the first study to explore the impact of GTI on the optimization of industrial structure (OIS) and rationalization of industrial structure (RIS) under various ERs. The results suggest that the influence of GTI on OIS and RIS features both heterogeneous environmental regulation effects and regional heterogeneity. Furthermore, command-controlled environmental regulation (CER) has a significant inhibitory effect on OIS. The threshold effects of ERs on OIS and RIS turn out to be significantly different when the panel threshold models are introduced, which also shows heterogeneity. Specifically, there are double and single threshold effects of MER and public participation environmental regulation (PER) on OIS, respectively. In comparison, there are single and double threshold effects of GTI on RIS under CER and PER, respectively. The results indicate that OIS and RIS are significantly correlated with GTI and the type and intensity of ERs. Background: TFEB/6p21/VEGFA-amplified renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is rare and difficult to diagnose, with diverse histological patterns and immunohistochemical and poorly defined molecular genetic characteristics. Case presentation: We report a case of a 63-year-old male admitted in 2017 with complex histomorphology, three morphological features of clear cell, eosinophilic and papillary RCC and resembling areas of glomerular and tubular formation. The immunophenotype also showed a mixture of CD10 and P504s. RCC with a high suspicion of collision tumors was indicated according to the 2014 WHO classification system; no precise diagnosis was possible. The patient was diagnosed at a different hospital with poorly differentiated lung squamous cell carcinoma one year after RCC surgery. We exploited molecular technology advances to retrospectively investigate the patient's molecular genetic alterations by whole-exome sequencing. The results revealed a 6p21 amplification in VEGFA and TFEB gene acquisition absent in other RCC subtypes. Clear cell, papillary, chromophobe, TFE3-translocation, eosinophilic solid and cystic RCC were excluded. Strong TFEB and Melan-A protein positivity prompted rediagnosis as TFEB/6p21/VEGFA-amplified RCC as per 2022 WHO classification. TMB-L (low tumor mutational load), CCND3 gene acquisition and MRE11A and ATM gene deletion mutations indicated sensitivity to PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitor combinations and the FDA-approved targeted agents Niraparib (Grade C), Olaparib (Grade C), Rucaparib (Grade C) and Talazoparib (Class C). GO (Gene Ontology) and KEGG enrichment analyses revealed major mutations and abnormal CNVs in genes involved in biological processes such as the TGF-β, Hippo, E-cadherin, lysosomal biogenesis and autophagy signaling pathways, biofilm synthesis cell adhesion substance metabolism regulation and others. We compared TFEB/6p21/VEGFA-amplified with TFEB-translocated RCC; significant differences in disease onset age, histological patterns, pathological stages, clinical prognoses, and genetic characteristics were revealed. Conclusion: We clarified the patient's challenging diagnosis and discussed the clinicopathology, immunophenotype, differential diagnosis, and molecular genetic information regarding TFEB/6p21/VEGFA-amplified RCC via exome analysis and a literature review. Highlights: 1. For the first time, the molecular genetics of TFEB/6p21/VEGFA-amplified renal cell carcinoma were completely and systematically characterized by exon sequencing. 2. The first case of TFEB/6p21/VEGFA-amplified renal cell carcinoma with genomic instability was reported, presenting a new outlook on the treatment and prognosis of this tumor. 3. Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is associated with a dismal prognosis due to development of resistance to chemotherapy and metastasis in the peritoneal cavity and distant organs. In order to identify new targets and treatment modalities we searched the literature for up- and and downregulated circRNAs with efficacy in preclinical EOC-related in vivo systems. Our search yielded circRNAs falling into the following categories: cisplatin and paclitaxel resistance, transmembrane receptors, secreted factors, transcription factors, RNA splicing and processing factors, RAS pathwayrelated components, proteolysis and cell-cycle regulation, signaling-related proteins, and circRNAs regulating proteins in additional categories. These findings can be potentially translated by validation and manipulation of the corresponding targets, inhibition of circRNAs with antisense oligonucleotides (ASO), small interfering RNAs (siRNA) or small hairpin RNA (shRNA) or by reconstituting their activity. Background: VISTA is a well-known immune checkpoint in T cell biology, but its role in innate immunity is less established. Here, we investigated the role of VISTA on anticancer macrophage immunity, with a focus on phagocytosis, macrophage polarization and concomitant T cell activation. Methods: Macrophages, differentiated from VISTA overexpressed THP-1 cells and cord blood CD34+ cell-derived monocytes, were used in phagocytosis assay using B lymphoma target cells opsonized with Rituximab. PBMC-derived macrophages were used to assess the correlation between phagocytosis and VISTA expression. qRT-PCR, flow cytometry, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay were performed to analyze the impact of VISTA on other checkpoints and M1/M2-like macrophage biology. Additionally, flow cytometry was used to assess the frequency of CD14+ monocytes expressing VISTA in PBMCs from 65 lymphoma patients and 37 healthy donors. Results: Ectopic expression of VISTA in the monocytic model cell line THP-1 or in primary monocytes triggered differentiation towards the macrophage lineage, with a marked increase in M2-like macrophage-related gene expression and decrease in M1-like macrophage-related gene expression. VISTA expression in THP-1 and monocyte-derived macrophages strongly downregulated expression of SIRPα, a prominent 'don't eat me' signal, and augmented phagocytic activity of macrophages against cancer cells. Intriguingly, expression of VISTA's extracellular domain alone sufficed to trigger phagocytosis in ∼ 50% of cell lines, with those cell lines also directly binding to recombinant human VISTA, indicating ligand-dependent and -independent mechanisms. Endogenous VISTA expression was predominantly higher in M2-like macrophages compared to M0- or M1-like macrophages, with a positive correlation observed between VISTA expression in M2c macrophages and their phagocytic activity. VISTA-expressing macrophages demonstrated a unique cytokine profile, characterized by reduced IL-1β and elevated IL-10 secretion. Furthermore, VISTA interacted with MHC-I and downregulated its surface expression, leading to diminished T cell activation. Notably, VISTA surface expression was identified in monocytes from all lymphoma patients but was less prevalent in healthy donors. Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) based on intracellular Fenton reaction to produce highly cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) has played an essential role in tumor therapy. However, this therapy still needs to be improved by weakly acidic pH and over-expression of glutathione (GSH) in tumor microenvironment (TEM), which hinders its future application. Herein, we reported a multifunctional bimetallic composite nanoparticle MnO2@GA-Fe@CAI based on a metal polyphenol network (MPN) structure, which could reduce intracellular pH and endogenous GSH by remodeling tumor microenvironment to improve Fenton activity. MnO2 nanoparticles were prepared first and MnO2@GA-Fe nanoparticles with Fe3+ as central ion and gallic acid (GA) as surface ligands were prepared by the chelation reaction. Then, carbonic anhydrase inhibitor (CAI) was coupled with GA to form MnO2@GA-Fe@CAI. The properties of the bimetallic composite nanoparticles were studied, and the results showed that CAI could reduce intracellular pH. At the same time, MnO2 could deplete intracellular GSH and produce Mn2+ via redox reactions, which re-established the TME with low pH and GSH. In addition, GA reduced Fe3+ to Fe2+. Mn2+ and Fe2+ catalyzed the endogenous H2O2 to produce high-lever ROS to kill tumor cells. Compared with MnO2, MnO2@GA-Fe@CAI could reduce the tumor weight and volume for the xenograft MDA-MB-231 tumor-bearing mice and the final tumor inhibition rate of 58.09 ± 5.77%, showing the improved therapeutic effect as well as the biological safety. Background: Congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB) is an inherited retinal disorder. Most of patients have myopia. This study aims to describe the clinical and genetic characteristics of fifty-nine patients with CSNB and investigate myopic progression under genetic cause. Results: Sixty-five variants were detected in the 59 CSNB patients, including 32 novel and 33 reported variants. The most frequently involved genes were NYX, CACNA1F, and TRPM1. Myopia (96.61%, 57/59) was the most common clinical finding, followed by nystagmus (62.71%, 37/59), strabismus (52.54%, 31/59), and nyctalopia (49.15%, 29/59). An average SE of -7.73 ± 3.37 D progressed to -9.14 ± 2.09 D in NYX patients with myopia, from − 2.24 ± 1.53 D to -4.42 ± 1.43 D in those with CACNA1F, and from − 5.21 ± 2.89 D to -9.24 ± 3.16 D in those with TRPM1 during the 3-year follow-up; the TRPM1 group showed the most rapid progression. Conclusions: High myopia and strabismus are distinct clinical features of CSNB that are helpful for diagnosis. Objective: To investigate the mechanism of Fuyang Jiebiao granule (FYJBKL) in the treatment of viral pneumonia. Methods: Firstly, a network model was constructed using network pharmacology to study the target expression sites of FYJBKL viral pneumonia, so as to determine the main targets and important signal transduction pathways for the treatment of viral pneumonia. Secondly, the main components of the drug and the main target are docked. Then, the fever, sweating and inflammation rat models were established to explore the antipyretic, sweating and anti-inflammatory mechanisms of FYJBKL.Finally, the contents of IL-17, IL-1β, TNF-α and IL-6 in blood samples of rats were analyzed by ELISA method, and the morphological changes of lung tissue were observed by HE staining. Results: Quercetin, luteolin, kaempferol, etc., and the main mechanism targets are IL-17, IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-6 and so on. Thirty signal pathways were identified by KEGG enrichment analysis, including interleukin-17 signaling pathway (IL-17 signaling pathway), human cytomegalovirus infection pathway (human cytomegalovirus infection), Kaposi's sarcoma associated herpesvirus infection pathway (Kaposi's sarcoma-as-sociated herpesvirus infection) and so on. After the study of molecular docking, we found that the contact efficiency between active substances and possible key targets is good. The high and middle concentration groups of FYJBKL significantly decreased the expression of IL-17, IL-1β, TNF-α and IL-6 in the blood of rats with inflammation(P<0.05). FYJBKL significantly reduced the foot swelling induced by egg white and inhibited the increase of body temperature induced by yeast in rats (P < 0.05). HE staining showed that FYJBKL improved pulmonary fibrosis and inflammatory exudation to varying degrees. Conclusion: The effects of FuyangJiebiao granules on the related signal pathways of anti-virus, anti-immune and anti-inflammation as well as biological and cellular processes may be caused by the binding of quercetin, luteolin, kaempferol and other active ingredients to their shared targets. Fuyang Jiebiao granules can improve the related symptoms caused by viral pneumonia, and its mechanism may be related to the activities of TNF, IL-17, IL-6 and other related channels, which are multiple targets of inflammation regulation. A ratiometric fluorescence platform was developed based on the cobalt oxyhydroxide (CoOOH) nanosheet–modulated fluorescence response of blue emissive copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) and yellow emissive o-phenylenediamine (OPD). CoOOH nanosheets showed dual function of strong absorption and oxidation ability, which can effectively quench the blue fluorescence of Cu NCs, with an excitation and emission peak maximum at 390 and 450 nm, respectively , and transfer the OPD into yellow fluorescence products, with an excitation and emission peak maximum at 390 and 560 nm, respectively. Upon introducing butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) and its substrates, CoOOH nanosheets were decomposed into Co2+, and malachite green (MG) showed strong inhibition ability to this process. This resulted in the obvious difference on the ratio of blue and yellow fluorescence recorded on the system in the presence and absence of MG, which was utilized for the quantitative detection of MG, with a limit of detection of 0.140 μM and a coefficient of variation of 3.5%. Modern fluvial sediments provide important information about source-to-sink process and regional tectono-magmatic events in the source area, but many factors, e.g., chemical weathering, sedimentary cycles and source-rock types, can interfere with the establishment of the source-sink system. The Lalin River (LR) and the Jilin Songhua River (JSR) are two important tributaries of the Songhua River in the Songnen Plain in NE China. They have similar flow direction, topography and identical climate backgrounds, but have notably different parent-rock types in the headwater, which provides an opportunity to explore the influencing factors of river sediment composition. To this end, the point bar sediments in the two rivers were sampled for an analysis of geochemistry (including element and Sr-Nd isotopic ratios), heavy mineral and detrital zircon U-Pb dating. The results are indicative of the fact that the two rivers have the similar geochemical composition (e.g., elements and Sr isotopes) as well as chemical weathering (CIA = 51.41–57.60, CIW = 59.68–66.11, PIA = 51.95–60.23, WIP = 56.00–65.47, Rb/Sr = 0.38–0.42) and recycling (SiO2/Al2O3 = 5.79 and 5.03, ICV = 1.0 and 1.2, CIA/WIP = 0.81–1.03) characteristics, showing a major control of climate on the low-level weathering and recycling of the river sediments. However, there are significant differences in the detrital zircon U-Pb age (a significant Mesozoic age peak for the LR but an additional Precambrian peak for the JSR), Nd isotope ratio (−6.2812–8.5830 and −8.1149–10.2411 for the LR and the JSR, respectively) and to a certain extent heavy mineral composition (e.g., for the < 63 μm fraction, a dominance of hornblende and magnetite in the LR, but haematite-limonite in the JSR) in the two river sediments, indicating that source rocks largely control the composition of the river sediments. Some of the major tectono-magmatic events (e.g., crustal growth and cratonisation of the North China Craton, closure of the Paleo-Asian Ocean, subduction and rollback of the Paleo-Pacific plate) occurring in the eastern Songnen Plain are well documented in the JSR sediments but not in the LR, the difference of which is largely regulated by the source rocks in the source area. Background: Disulfidptosis is a type of programmed cell death caused by excessive cysteine-induced disulfide bond denaturation leading to actin collapse. Liver cancer has a poor prognosis and requires more effective intervention strategies. Currently, the prognostic and therapeutic value of disulfidptosis in liver cancer is not clear. Methods: We investigated the features of 16 disulfidptosis-related genes (DRGs) of HCC patients in the TCGA and classified the patients into two disulfidptosis pattern clusters by consensus clustering analysis. Then, we constructed a prognostic model using LASSO Cox regression. Next, the microenvironment and drug sensitivity were evaluated. Finally, we used qPCR and functional analysis to verify the reliability of hub DRGs. Results: Most of the DRGs showed significantly higher expression in cancer tissues than in adjacent tissues. Our prognostic model, the DRG score, can well predict the survival of HCC patients. There were significant differences in survival, features of the microenvironment, effects of immunotherapy, and drug sensitivity between the high- and low-DRG score groups. Ultimately, we demonstrated that a few hub DRGs have differential mRNA expression between liver cancer cells and normal cells and that the protective gene LCAT can inhibit liver cancer metastasis in vitro. Conclusion: We established a novel risk model based on DRG scores to predict HCC patient prognosis, drug sensitivity and immunotherapy efficacy, which provides new insight into the relationship between disulfidptosis and HCC and provides valuable assistance for the personalized treatment of HCC. Fluorinated compounds with side-chains longer than six carbon have been banned due to their toxicity to environment, organisms and human, so that attentions have been paid on degradable short-chain fluorinated or non-fluorinated materials. Here in this paper, several novel short-chain fluorinated polysiloxanes with multi-functions were synthesized successfully and applied on cotton fabrics. Chemical structure of these fluorinated polysiloxanes were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectrum and nuclear magnetic resonance. Liquid repellency, washing durability, thermal stability, fabric style and color deepening of treated cotton fabrics were investigated. Additionally, the effect of benzoyl spacer on the surface wettability was fully studied. Results demonstrate that FPAPS-20@cotton (cotton fabric treated by fluorinated polysiloxane with 20% fluorine content) exhibits the greatest liquid repellency as the contact angles for water, ethylene glycol, glycerol and octane are 150.1°, 132.3°, 138.1° and 105.5°. Moreover, the benzoyl spacer plays a positive role in the durable wettability of FPAPS-20@cotton, resulting in the water contact angles ranging from 150.1° to 146.0° when FPAPS-20@cotton exposes to the water droplet for 20 min. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy provides the experimental evidence for this result. On the other hand, thermal-gravimetric analysis confirms that the fluoroalkyl segments of the fluorinated polysiloxanes can decelerate the thermal decomposition of cotton fabrics. Moreover, compared with the untreated dyed cotton fabric, the K/S values of cotton fabrics with navy, red and orange color treated with FPAPS-20 increase by 42.61%, 11.00% and 18.18%, respectively. The development of high-performance adsorbents is highly demanded in sustainable production of nuclear power. Herein, porous chitosan-poly(imide dioxime) (Cs-PIDO) hydrogel with semi-interpenetrating structure was prepared. Cs-PIDO-1 showed rapid kinetics, high adsorption capacity and excellent regeneration capability. Impressively, the capture speed of Cs-PIDO-1 reached 0.35 mg g−1 d−1 during the first 2-week extraction and its 4-week adsorption capacity was up to 5.75 mg g−1 in real seawater. The superior uranium harvesting performance originated from the cooperation effect of hierarchically porous structure and PIDO groups. To summarize the contents and assess the methodological quality and measurement properties of the patient-reported outcome (PRO) scales featured with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for respiratory diseases based on the guideline of COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN).Methods: PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang Data, VIP, and China Biology Medicine (CBM) were searched for studies on PRO scales featured with TCM for respiratory diseases from their inception until December 2022. The characteristics of the PRO scales were qualitatively summarized. Following the COSMIN guideline, the risk of bias was assessed according to the checklist, and different measurement properties (content validity, structural validity, internal consistency, reliability, criterion validity, and responsiveness) were evaluated. Finally, the evidence's overall quality was assessed, and the recommendation was formulated using the modified GRADE approach.Results: A total of 13 scales were included, with 6 for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), 3 for lung cancer, 2 for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), 1 for community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), and 1 for bronchiectasis. All 13 scales are disease-specific scales and were developed based on Chinese cultural background to measure the efficacy of TCM. The study did not provide information on measurement error, cross-cultural validity, and hypothesis testing for the construct validity of these measures. No scale was rated as sufficient in content validity and responsiveness. Two scales showed sufficient structural validity, while 11 scales exhibited sufficient internal consistency. Three scales demonstrated sufficient reliability, and 7 scales showed sufficient criterion validity. All 13 scales have a recommendation level of B.Conclusion: The 13 scales could reflect the clinical efficacy of TCM and are suitable for the Chinese population. Despite availability of several treatment options for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, targeted therapy and immunotherapy, the survival rate of patients for five years is in the range of 22%. Therefore, identification of new targets and treatment modalities for this disease is an important issue. In this context, we screened the PubMed database for upregulated circular RNAs (circRNAs) which promote growth of NSCLC in preclinical models in vitro as well as in vivo xenograft models in immuno-compromised mice. This approach led to potential targets for further validation and inhibition with small molecules or antibody-derived entities. In case of preclinical validation, the corresponding circRNAs can be inhibited with small interfering RNAs (siRNA) or short hairpin RNAs (shRNA). The identified circRNAs act by sponging microRNAs (miRs) preventing cleavage of the mRNA of the corresponding targets. We identified nine circRNAs up-regulating transmembrane receptors, five circRNAs increasing expression of secreted proteins, nine circRNAs promoting expression of components of signaling pathways, six circRNAs involved in regulation of splicing. Intracranial chondrosarcoma is a rare tumor with limited reports. We reviewed the clinical outcomes, imaging findings, and pathological characteristics at three centers to improve the diagnosis and treatment of intracranial chondrosarcoma. We retrospectively analyzed 26 patients with intracranial chondrosarcoma who had undergone surgical treatment at Tangdu Hospital of Air Force Military Medical University, Mianyang Central Hospital, and Nanchong Central Hospital from January 2010 to July 2022. Clinical manifestations, imaging features, surgical treatment, prognosis, and overall survival (OS) were analyzed. All 26 chondrosarcomas were located at the skull base. Gross total resection (GTR), subtotal resection (STR), and partial resection (PR) were performed in 14, 10, and 2 cases, respectively. Four cases underwent endoscopic transnasal surgery, while the remaining cases underwent craniotomy. The clinical symptoms were evaluated 1 week after surgery, and 15 cases were relieved to varying degrees. Postoperative complications included pulmonary infection, subcutaneous hydrops, dysphagia and choking, facial numbness, abducens paralysis, and intracranial infection (ICI). Fifteen cases received postoperative adjuvant radiotherapy. Seven cases showed recurrence: two with PR, four with STR, and one with GTR. Six cases received reoperation or radiotherapy after tumor progression, and one untreated patient died 5 months after tumor recurrence. The extent of tumor resection (HR 21.74, 95% CI 1.25–376.6, P = 0.03) and pathological grading (HR 131.99, 95% CI 4.05–4300.5, P = 0.006) were associated with improved OS. We presented our experience in the treatment of intracranial chondrosarcoma at three centers in the past 12 years. Intracranial chondrosarcoma lacked typical imaging features and are difficult to differentiate from other skull base lesions. Maximum extent of tumor resection with minimal injury to neurological function remains the most important treatment strategy. Background: Standardized training for resident physicians is the primary form of postgraduate medical education, and it plays a pivotal role in healthcare safety and industry stability. Currently, it has garnered significant attention from healthcare institutions. Methods: By conducting a comprehensive literature review and a Delphi consultation in June 2022 for which 40 experts in clinical medicine, public health, and other related fields in China were invited. The indicators were adjusted according to the results of the consultation, and the final indicator weights were determined through an analytic hierarchy process. Results: The response rate was 100%, and the expert authority coefficient was 0.879. The consistency among the experts on the tertiary indicators, as measured by Kendall's W, was 0.675 (χ2 = 42.516, p < 0.001). Based on the results of the expert consultation, a job competence evaluation system for resident physicians (including integrated postgraduates) receiving standardized training was established, which included 6 primary indicators, 18 secondary indicators, and 116 tertiary indicators. The weights for the primary indicators, namely professional quality, skills and knowledge, patient care, communication and collaboration, teaching skills, and lifelong learning, were 0.313, 0.248, 0.181, 0.083, 0.066, and 0.110, respectively. The top three secondary indicators in terms of combined weights were clinical skills (0.122), professional ethics (0.120), and professional dedication (0.109). The three tertiary indicators with the highest scores were "maintains collaboration with peers and colleagues in patient treatment," "has clinical thinking skills, makes diagnosis and treatment decisions based on analysis of evidence, and has the ability to administer suitable treatments," and "abides by laws and discipline and refuses to seek personal gains in medical practice"; their combined weights were 0.035, 0.028, and 0.027, respectively. Conclusion: This study has established a concrete, objective, and quantifiable competency assessment index system for standardized training of clinical resident physicians (including integrated postgraduates). Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) is a vital protein involved in neuronal development, survival, and plasticity. Alcohol consumption has been implicated in various neurocognitive deficits and neurodegenerative disorders. However, the impact of alcohol on BDNF blood levels remains unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the effect of alcohol consumption on BDNF blood levels. A comprehensive search of electronic databases was conducted to identify relevant studies. Eligible studies were selected based on predefined inclusion criteria. Data extraction was performed, and methodological quality was assessed using appropriate tools. A meta-analysis was conducted to estimate the overall effect size of alcohol consumption on BDNF levels. A total of 25 studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in the final analysis. Alcohol use and BDNF blood levels were significantly correlated, according to the meta-analysis (p = 0.008). Overall, it was discovered that drinking alcohol significantly decreased BDNF levels (SMD: − 0.39; 95% CI: − 0.68 to − 0.10; I2: 93%). There was a non-significant trend suggesting that alcohol withdrawal might increase BDNF levels, with an SMD of 0.26 (95% CI: − 0.09 to 0.62; I2: 86%; p = 0.14). Subgroup analysis based on the source of BDNF demonstrated significant differences between the subgroups (p = 0.0008). No significant publication bias was observed. This study showed that alcohol consumption is associated with a significant decrease in BDNF blood levels. The findings suggest a negative impact of alcohol on BDNF levels regardless of alcohol dosage. Further studies are needed to strengthen the evidence and elucidate the underlying mechanisms. Malignant rhabdoid tumors (MRTs) are rare tumors with high mortality rates and poor prognoses. MRTs occur mainly in the central nervous system, kidneys, and soft tissues, but rarely in the omentum. MRTs occur more commonly in infants and children and less frequently in adults. Here, we report the first observed case of MRT in an adult omentum. A 35-year-old man with abdominal distension and pain was admitted to the emergency department. Previously, several hospitals considered patients with cirrhosis who had not received active treatment. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed diffuse omental thickening and massive ascites. The surgery was performed at our hospital, and the pathological diagnosis was MRT with a SMARCB1(INI-1) deletion. Postoperatively, his symptoms improved, and he underwent five cycles of chemotherapy. However, 6 months after surgery, the tumor developed liver metastases, and the patient subsequently died. Primary MRT of the greater omentum is rare, and its pathological diagnosis usually requires extensive clinicopathological evaluation of various differential diagnoses and an appropriate work-up to exclude other malignancies associated with SMARCB1 deletion. Purpose: Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), is a frequent digestive tract malignant carcinoma with a high fatality rate. Daphne altaica (D. altaica), a medicinal plant that is frequently employed in Kazakh traditional medicine, and which has traditionally been used to cure cancer and respiratory conditions, but research on the mechanism is lacking. Therefore, we examined and verified the hub genes and mechanism of D. altaica treating ESCC. Methods: Active compounds and targets of D. altaica were screened by databases such as TCMSP, and ESCC targets were screened by databases such as GeneCards and constructed the compound-target network and PPI network. Meantime, data sets between tissues and adjacent non-cancerous tissues from GEO database (GSE100942, GPL570) were analyzed to obtain DEGs using the limma package in R. Hub genes were validated using data from the Kaplan–Meier plotter database, TIMER2.0 and GEPIA2 databases. Finally, AutoDock software was used to predict the binding sites through molecular docking. Results: In total, 830 compound targets were obtained from TCMSP and other databases. In addition, 17,710 disease targets were acquired based on GeneCards and other databases. In addition, we constructed the compound-target network and PPI network. Then, 127 DEGs were observed (82 up-regulated and 45 down-regulated genes). Hub genes were screened including TOP2A, NUF2, CDKN2A, BCHE, and NEK2, and had been validated with the help of several publicly available databases. Finally, molecular docking results showed more stable binding between five hub genes and active compounds. Cloud-based data sharing addresses the limited storage availability problem for resource-constrained users albeit at the cost of privacy and the need for access control mechanism. However, most of the techniques for secure data sharing with high access control are computationally intensive. Proxy re-encryption scheme is computationally light and provides secure cloud-based data sharing. Proxy re-encryption has a single semi-trust proxy for all intermediate re-encryption processes, which makes it a single point of failure and vulnerable to several attacks. In this paper, we propose, PB-TPRE, a threshold proxy re-encryption with the proactive property. The shares of re-encryption keys are sent to all proxies using shamir secret sharing. The shares may be leaked with passage of time or whenever any proxy leaves or joins the network, then, the secret needs to be change. The proactive property in threshold proxy re-encryption helps renew the shares without changing the secret. PB-TPRE scheme is collusion resistant against the proxies, users and cloud. We present a concrete construction for PB-TPRE that satisfies indistinguishability under chosen-plaintext attacks with a random oracle model and formally proves its security. We compared and discussed PB-TPRE scheme with other threshold proxy re-encryption schemes and found it to be efficient and secure for cloud-based data sharing applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims/hypothesis: It is widely thought that the intestinal microbiota plays a significant role in the pathogenesis of metabolic disorders. However, the gut microbiota composition and characteristics of schizophrenia patients with metabolic syndrome (MetS) have been largely understudied. Herein, we investigated the association between the metabolic status of mainland Chinese schizophrenia patients with MetS and the intestinal microbiome. Methods: Fecal microbiota communities from 115 male schizophrenia patients (57 with MetS and 58 without MetS) were assessed by 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing. We assessed the variations of gut microbiome between both groups and explored potential associations between intestinal microbiota and parameters of MetS. In addition, the Phylogenetic Investigation of Communities by Reconstruction of Unobserved States (PICRUSt) based on the KEGG database was used to predict the function of intestinal microbiota. We also conducted Decision Tree Analysis to develop a diagnostic model for the MetS in patients with schizophrenia based on the composition of intestinal microbiota. Results: The fecal microbial diversity significantly differed between groups with or without MetS (a-diversity (Shannon index and Simpson index): p=0.0155, p=0.0089; b-diversity: p=0.001). Moreover, the microbial composition was significantly different between the two groups, involving five phyla and 38 genera (p<0.05). In addition, a significant correlation was observed between the metabolic-related parameters and abundance of altered microbiota including HDL-c (r2 = 0.203, p=0.0005), GLU (r2 = 0.286, p=0.0005) and WC (r2 = 0.061, p=0.037). Furthermore, KEGG pathway analysis showed that 16 signaling pathways were significantly enriched between the two groups (p<0.05). Importantly, our diagnostic model based on five microorganisms established by decision tree analysis could effectively distinguish between patients with and without MetS (AUC = 0.94). Conclusions/interpretation: Our study established the compositional and functional characteristics of intestinal microbiota in schizophrenia patients with MetS. These new findings provide novel insights into a better understanding of this disease and provide the theoretical basis for implementing new interventional therapies in clinical practice. Background: Prostate cancer is a major cause of cancer morbidity and mortality in men worldwide. Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) has proven effective in early-stage androgen-sensitive disease, but prostate cancer gradually develops into an androgen-resistant metastatic state in the vast majority of patients. According to our oncogene-induced model for cancer development, senescence is a major tumor progression barrier. However, whether senescence is implicated in the progression of early-stage androgen-sensitive to highly aggressive castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) remains poorly addressed. Methods: Androgen-dependent (LNCaP) and –independent (C4-2B and PC-3) cells were treated or not with enzalutamide, an Androgen Receptor (AR) inhibitor. RNA sequencing and pathway analyses were carried out in LNCaP cells to identify potential senescence regulators upon treatment. Assessment of the invasive potential of cells and senescence status following enzalutamide treatment and/or RNAi-mediated silencing of selected targets was performed in all cell lines, complemented by bioinformatics analyses on a wide range of in vitro and in vivo datasets. Key observations were validated in LNCaP and C4-2B mouse xenografts. Senescence induction was assessed by state-of-the-art GL13 staining by immunocytochemistry and confocal microscopy. Results: We demonstrate that enzalutamide treatment induces senescence in androgen-sensitive cells via reduction of the replication licensing factor CDC6. Mechanistically, we show that CDC6 downregulation is mediated through endogenous activation of the GATA2 transcription factor functioning as a CDC6 repressor. Intriguingly, GATA2 levels decrease in enzalutamide-resistant cells, leading to CDC6 stabilization accompanied by activation of Epithelial-To-Mesenchymal Transition (EMT) markers and absence of senescence. We show that CDC6 loss is sufficient to reverse oncogenic features and induce senescence regardless of treatment responsiveness, thereby identifying CDC6 as a critical determinant of prostate cancer progression. Conclusions: We identify a key GATA2-CDC6 signaling axis which is reciprocally regulated in enzalutamide-sensitive and -resistant prostate cancer environments. Upon acquired resistance, GATA2 repression leads to CDC6 stabilization, with detrimental effects in disease progression through exacerbation of EMT and abrogation of senescence. However, bypassing the GATA2-CDC6 axis by direct inhibition of CDC6 reverses oncogenic features and establishes senescence, thereby offering a therapeutic window even after acquiring resistance to therapy. Synovial sarcoma is a rare malignant mesenchymal neoplasm mostly affecting young adults, characterized by a specific translocation which results in the fusion of the SS18 gene on chromosome 18 with one of the three highly homologous SSX genes on chromosome X. Its morphological diagnosis, especially in monophasic or poorly differentiated variants, can be challenging because histological features often overlap with other malignant mesenchymal tumors. Until recently, the differential diagnosis mostly relied on the use of cytogenetic or molecular analyses to detect the specific t(X;18)(p11;q11) translocation, thus virtually restricting its correct identification to referral centers with a high histological and molecular pathology workflow. The recently commercialized highly sensitive and fusion-specific SS18-SSX antibody has significantly improved the approach to these tumors, representing a relatively cheap and easy to access tool for synovial sarcoma diagnosis. Through a retrospective analysis of 79 synovial sarcomas and histological mimickers, this study confirms the usefulness of the SS18-SSX antibody in the diagnosis of synovial sarcoma, particularly focusing on its application in the pathological response evaluation after neoadjuvant treatment as well as its time- and cost-saving advantages. STUDY QUESTION Are dietary phytochemicals associated with the risk of teratozoospermia? SUMMARY ANSWER Dietary intake of carotene, including total carotene, α-carotene, β-carotene as well as retinol equivalent, and lutein + zeaxanthin, were inversely correlated with the risk of teratozoospermia. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY Phytochemicals are natural plant derived bioactive compounds, which have been reported to be potentially associated with male reproductive health. To date, no study has investigated the association between phytochemical intake and the risk of teratozoospermia. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION This hospital-based case–control study, which included 146 newly diagnosed teratozoospermia cases and 581 controls with normozoospermia from infertile couples, was conducted in a hospital-based infertility clinic in China, from June 2020 to December 2020. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS Dietary information was collected using a validated semi-quantitative 110-item food frequency questionnaire. Unconditional logistic regression was applied to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the associations between phytochemical (i.e. phytosterol, carotene, flavonoid, isoflavone, anthocyanidin, lutein + zeaxanthin, and resveratrol) intake and the risk of teratozoospermia. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE We observed a decreased risk of teratozoospermia for the highest compared with the lowest tertile consumption of total carotene (OR = 0.40, 95% CI = 0.21–0.77), α-carotene (OR = 0.53, 95% CI = 0.30–0.93), β-carotene (OR = 0.47, 95% CI = 0.25–0.88), retinol equivalent (OR = 0.47, 95% CI = 0.24–0.90), and lutein + zeaxanthin (OR = 0.35, 95% CI = 0.19–0.66), with all of the associations showing evident linear trends (all P trend <0.05). In addition, significant dose–response associations were observed between campestanol and α-carotene consumption and the risk of teratozoospermia. Moreover, there was a significant multiplicative interaction between BMI and lutein + zeaxanthin intake (P interaction <0.05). LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION The cases and controls were not a random sample of the entire target population, which could lead to admission rate bias. Nevertheless, the controls were enrolled from the same infertility clinic, which could reduce the bias caused by selection and increase the comparability. Furthermore, our study only included a Chinese population, therefore caution is required regarding generalization of our findings to other populations. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS Dietary phytochemicals, namely carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin, might exert a positive effect on teratozoospermia. These phytochemicals are common in the daily diet and dietary supplements, and thus may provide a preventive intervention for teratozoospermia. Open in new tab Download slide OBJECTIVES Evidence regarding the benefits of an enhanced recovery after cardiac surgery (ERACS) programme is lacking. The aim of this study was to analyse the impact of a systematic standardized ERACS programme for patients undergoing isolated elective surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) for aortic stenosis in terms of hospital mortality and morbidity, patient blood management and length of stay. METHODS Patients undergoing isolated elective SAVR for aortic stenosis between 2015 and 2020 were identified from our database (n  = 941). The standardized systematic ERACS programme was implemented in November 2018. Propensity score matching indicated that 259 patients would receive standard perioperative care (control group) and 259 patients would receive the ERACS programme (ERACS group). The primary outcome was hospital mortality. The secondary outcomes were hospital morbidity, patient blood management and length of stay. RESULTS Both groups had similar hospital mortality rates (0.4%). The ERACS group had a significantly lower troponin I peak level (P  < 0.001), a larger proportion of improved perioperative left ventricular ejection fractions (P  = 0.001), a lower incidence of bronchopneumonia (P  = 0.030), a larger proportion of patients with mechanical ventilation <6 h (P  < 0.001), a lower incidence of delirium (P  = 0.028) and less acute renal failure (P  = 0.013). The ERACS group had a significantly lower rate of red blood cell transfusions (P  = 0.002). The intensive care unit stay was significantly shorter in the ERACS group than in the control group (P  = 0.039). CONCLUSIONS The standardized systematic ERACS programme significantly improved postoperative outcomes and should become the reference for the perioperative care pathway for patients undergoing SAVR.
