Background: This scoping review aimed to summarize existing research on point-of-care tests (POCTs) within emergency medical services (EMS). There is a lack of comprehensive reviews covering the breadth and scope of application of POCTs in EMS despite growing interest and potential benefits in this setting. A review of the research will inform how we target future research efforts to support effective implementation and avoid duplication. Methods: We searched three databases to April 2023 using comprehensive terms for POCTs. One author screened titles and abstracts, full-text papers and extracted data with a second author checking the data. A scoping review framework was used to categorise studies according to demographics, study design, medical conditions, biomarkers and test devices. Results: We found 141 papers that included 158 reports of 9 study designs, 155 reports of 40 combinations of biomarker and condition and 161 reports of 41 test-devices. The majority of research was done in the UK (19%), US (17%), and the Netherlands (16%), mostly in land-based EMS (82%). Most frequently assessed were troponin for acute coronary syndromes (26%), lactate for sepsis (14%) or lactate for trauma/critical illness (13%). The majority of research designs investigated the accuracy of the tests (43%). Few studies were of a design to inform guidelines to change patient pathways and the associated outcomes, including, randomised controlled trials (RCTs) (4%), non-randomised studies able to assess causality (6%), economic analyses (1%) or qualitative work on acceptability (3%). In those few cases where RCTs were done there were long delays between initial test-accuracy research and publication of the first RCT, for example 11 years delay for troponin for acute coronary syndromes. Conclusions: We identified a thriving base of research on POCT in the EMS, however most studies established the diagnostic accuracy of the tests with few RCTs, economic analyses or qualitative research on acceptability. The time-lag from diagnostic accuracy to developing an RCT is considerable. Investment in funding and infrastructure is needed to support the research pathway for potential POCTs beyond diagnostic accuracy to designs able to assess clinical effectiveness, acceptability and economic effectiveness. Montana is the leading producer of field peas (Pisum sativum L.) in the United States. A density of 8 to 10 plants ft−2 is recommended when growing field peas in that state, but this recommendation is based on work done elsewhere. Field experiments were conducted in central Montana from 2021 through 2023 and at three additional locations in the final year to determine the yield and the economically optimum plant population (EOPP) when growing field peas for grain. The semi‐leafless, yellow‐cotyledon variety Montech 4152 was planted at five rates (5, 7, 9, 11, and 13 pure live seed [PLS] ft−2) in all 3 years with two additional rates (3 and 15 PLS ft−2) added in the final year. A minimum plant density of 6 to 8 plants ft−2, or planting field pea at 7 to 9 PLS ft−2, produced a grain yield comparable to or greater than amounts produced at other seeding rates. The minimum EOPP across the six experiments ranged from 3 (2.8) to 7 (6.4) plants ft−2, corresponding to a seeding rate of 3 to 7 PLS ft−2. However, more weeds were observed when field pea was planted at 3 PLS ft−2 than at higher rates in one of the experiments. A field pea density of 6 to 8 plants ft−2 is sufficient to optimize grain yield and economic returns in Montana and similar dryland environments.Plain Language Summary: Montana is the leading producer of field peas in the United States. The perennial rhizomatous weed Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop. is difficult to manage on semiarid organic farms. Our objective was to quantify the impact of eight 4‐year crop sequences crossed with standard‐ and reduced‐tillage on C. arvense occurrence (presence/absence), stem density, and aboveground biomass at two semiarid sites in Montana. The sequences represented a range of crop competition from high (multiple years of perennial forage [alfalfa, Medicago sativa L.]) to low (2 years of continuous fallow), with intermediate sequences consisting of different annual species. Final‐year spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L. emend. Thell.) was planted in all sequences to determine impacts on subsequent cash crop production. Through time, alfalfa and double fallow sequences reduced C. arvense density and biomass where it was established, although its invasion into new areas increased in the double fallow. Final‐year C. arvense occurrence and stem density were lower in the alfalfa sequence compared with six and four annual crop sequences, respectively (p < 0.05). Final year C. arvense biomass was higher at one site than the other, although not in the double fallow sequence. Wheat grain yields differed in response to crop sequences at the two sites: at one site, grain yield was lowest in the alfalfa sequence, especially when standard‐tillage was used, while yields were highest in the alfalfa and double fallow sequences at the other site. Using perennial forages in semiarid organic systems can be effective for managing C. arvense, but subsequent cash crop yield may be depressed. Lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) production has increased exponentially in Montana in the last two decades. However, there are important gaps in knowledge on best management practices for lentil. Agronomic recommendations are based on performance of old cultivars outside of the area for seeding rate, and on anecdotal evidence for proper roll timing, particularly since the widespread adoption of no‐till farming. Replicated field experiments were conducted at three sites during the 2019, 2020, and 2021 growing seasons in Montana to determine the impacts of roll timing and seeding rate on lentil yield and identify best practices. Overall, rolling at emergence and at the 10‐leaf stage decreased yields by 5% and 8%, respectively, but rolling just after planting or at the early vegetative stage (two‐ to four‐leaf stage) did not decrease yields. Higher yields were achieved at higher seeding rates, with yields increasing between 6 and 52 lb ac−1 for each additional plant established per square foot, but emergence rates were variable and relatively low, so a higher seeding rate may be necessary to achieve plant densities above 12 plants ft−2 in this region. In five out of nine site years, the largest partial economic returns were achieved with 22.5 or 30 live seeds ft−2 seeding rate, corresponding to achieved plant densities of 12 to 16 plants ft−2. It was generally economical to increase seeding rate from 15 to 22.5 live seeds ft−2, thus increasing average achieved plant density from 8 to 13 plants ft−2, except when seed costs were high (>$0.45 lb−1) combined with low market prices (< $0.20 lb−1). We present the results of multicolour UBVR C I C JHK photometry, spectroscopic analysis and spectral energy distribution (SED) modelling for the post-AGB candidate IRAS 02143+5852. We detected Cepheid-like light variations with the full peak-to-peak amplitude Δ V ∼ 0.9 mag and the pulsation period of about 24.9 d. The phased light curves appeared typical for the W Vir Cepheids. The period–luminosity relation for the Type II Cepheids yielded the luminosity log L /L⊙ ∼ 2.95. From a low-resolution spectrum, obtained at maximum brightness, the following atmospheric parameters were determined: T eff ∼ 7400 K and log g ∼ 1.38. This spectrum contains the emission lines H α, |${\rm Ba\, {\small II}}$| λ6496.9, |${\rm He\, {\small I}}$| λ10830, and Pa β. Spectral monitoring performed in 2019–2021 showed a significant change in the H α profile and appearance of CH and CN molecular bands with pulsation phase. The metal lines are weak. Unlike typical W Vir variables, the star shows a strong excess of infrared radiation associated with the presence of a heavy dust envelope around the star. We modelled the SED using our photometry and archival data from different catalogues and determined the parameters of the circumstellar dust envelope. We present the growth and characterization of sizable single crystals of the transition metal sulfide Ba2MnS3 by the floating-zone technique. Notably, to the best of our knowledge, this method marks the first instance of sulfide melt growth in an open atmosphere, prompting us to detail modifications to our halogen image furnace to eliminate oxygen from the growth atmosphere. This advance is expected to prove valuable for cultivating substantial crystals of other sulfide materials. We present a detailed study of Ba2MnS3. Through single crystal X-ray and neutron diffraction, we confirm Ba2MnS3 adopts the orthorhombic space group Pnma with unit cell parameters of a = 8.88960 (10) Å, b = 4.33630 (10) Å, c = 17.2210 (2) Å, and V = 663.835 (19) Å3 at 300 K. By means of magnetometry and specific heat capacity, we identify an antiferromagnetic ground state, with two transitions at 19.6 and 21.1 K. Finally, we elucidate the magnetic ground state through single crystal neutron diffraction, demonstrating the system is described by the magnetic propagation vector k = (0, 1/2, 0) and belongs to the Pb21/n magnetic space group. This study investigates common features of a set of diverse schools' responses to the initial school lockdown period during the pandemic in 2020, with a focus on practices supporting learning, inclusion and wellbeing. It comprises a collective case study of four Australian schools that were selected based on their reputation for impactful support of students and teachers during the emergency remote teaching period. Methods included interviews and focus groups with school leaders, teachers and students. The schools had widely differing contexts, technology access and student needs. Despite these varied contexts, the findings provided important insights into common practices supporting effective remote teaching. Emerging principles of effective practice illuminate ways forward to mitigate the significant risks accompanying emergency remote teaching, and guide practices in a variety of school contexts. Measurement of plasmalogens is useful for the biochemical diagnosis of rhizomelic chondrodysplasia punctata (RCDP) and is also informative for Zellweger spectrum disorders (ZSD). We have developed a test method for the simultaneous quantitation of C16:0, C18:0, and C018:1 plasmalogen (PG) species and their corresponding fatty acids (FAs) in dried blood spots (DBS) and erythrocytes (RBC) by using capillary gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Normal reference ranges for measured markers and 10 calculated ratios were established by the analysis of 720 and 473 unaffected DBS and RBC samples, respectively. Determination of preliminary disease ranges was made by using 45 samples from 43 unique patients: RCDP type 1 (DBS: 1 mild, 17 severe; RBC: 1 mild, 6 severe), RCDP type 2 (DBS: 2 mild, 1 severe; RBC: 2 severe), RCDP type 3 (DBS: 1 severe), RCDP type 4 (RBC: 2 severe), and ZSD (DBS: 3 severe; RBC: 2 mild, 7 severe). Postanalytical interpretive tools in Collaborative Laboratory Integrated Reports (CLIR) were used to generate an integrated score and a likelihood of disease. In conjunction with a review of clinical phenotype, phytanic acid, and very long‐chain FA test results, the CLIR analysis allowed for differentiation between RCDP and ZSD. Data will continue to be gathered to improve CLIR analysis as more samples from affected patients with variable disease severity are analyzed. The layered-ruthenate family of materials possess an intricate interplay of structural, electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom that yields a plethora of delicately balanced ground states. This is exemplified by Ca3Ru2O7, which hosts a coupled transition in which the lattice parameters jump, the Fermi surface partially gaps and the spins undergo a 90∘ in-plane reorientation. Here, we show how the transition is driven by a lattice strain that tunes the electronic bandwidth. We apply uniaxial stress to single crystals of Ca3Ru2O7, using neutron and resonant x-ray scattering to simultaneously probe the structural and magnetic responses. These measurements demonstrate that the transition can be driven by externally induced strain, stimulating the development of a theoretical model in which an internal strain is generated self-consistently to lower the electronic energy. We understand the strain to act by modifying tilts and rotations of the RuO6 octahedra, which directly influences the nearest-neighbour hopping. Our results offer a blueprint for uncovering the driving force behind coupled phase transitions, as well as a route to controlling them. Ca3Ru2O7 is a layered ruthenate, which undergoes a spin-reorientation transition where the spins rotate 90 degrees between two anti-ferromagnetic states. Pulse crops, including lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) and pea (Pisum sativum L.), can improve the sustainability of Northern Great Plains cropping systems, largely through biological N fixation. Greater N fixation amounts can help producers to increase yield while decreasing N fertilizer inputs for the following crop. There may be potential to breed greater N‐fixing pulse varieties, yet little is known about varietal differences in N fixation. Nitrogen fixation of pea and lentil varieties was quantified at two sites in Montana from 2019 to 2021 using an N difference approach and the 15N natural abundance method. Riveland and CDC Richlea were frequently high N‐fixing lentil varieties, both fixing ca. 130 kg N ha−1 in the site‐year with the most favorable growing conditions. No pea variety had consistently greater N fixation than others, despite N fixation ranging from 88 to 135 kg N ha−1 in one site‐year among varieties. Nitrogen fixation by lentil had an inverse relationship with days to flowering but was not correlated with days to maturity. Nitrogen fixation by pea was positively correlated with days to maturity but was not correlated with days to flowering. Breeding lentil and pea for high N fixation by selecting high N‐fixing varieties is likely difficult, as varieties performed differently under variable environmental conditions. Breeding efforts based on traits, such as days to flowering, could be more successful. There were more positive correlations between N fixation parameters and seed yield for pea than for lentil, suggesting that breeding for greater yields could increase N fixation for pea but not lentil. Cover crops during summer fallow have been rarely researched in the semiarid northern Great Plains. This study was conducted during 2012–2019 at four Montana locations and included four functional groups (Brassica family, fibrous‐rooted crops, legumes, and tap‐rooted crops). Eleven treatments included sole functional groups, a Full Mix, the Full Mix minus each functional group, pea, and chemical fallow. Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was grown after each cover crop year with three nitrogen (N) fertilizer rates. Cover crops were terminated with herbicide at first flower stage of pea (Pisum sativum L.) 57 to 66 days after planting. Shoot biomass averaged 2.0 Mg ha−1 over eight site‐years representative of dryland farming in Montana. Using equal overall plant densities, treatments with six species averaged 13% greater biomass than two species. Measured at termination to a 0.9‐m depth, Fallow held greater soil water than cover crop treatments, with Fallow averaging 57 mm greater than the Full Mix. Soil nitrate averaged 49 kg N ha−1 greater after Fallow than the Full Mix; the Legume treatment averaged 26 kg N ha−1 greater than the Minus Legume treatment. Wheat yield on Fallow averaged 0.85 Mg ha−1 greater than the Full Mix in 5 of 10 site‐years, mainly at the driest site‐years. The Legume treatment elevated wheat protein over the Minus Legume treatment by an average of 15 g kg−1. Cover crops grown during summer fallow reduced soil nitrate‐N, soil water, and wheat yields compared with chemical fallow, especially in the major wheat growing region of north central Montana. One of the world's pre‐eminent marine scientists and the founding editor of Fisheries Oceanography, Professor Timothy (Tim) R. Parsons, passed away peacefully in hospital in April 2022. He was passionate about building a holistic understanding of how pelagic organisms are interconnected in the food‐webs of the sea, and about presenting alternative methods for the management of fisheries. For these activities and many others, he was the recipient of many international awards and honours. He had a profound influence on many students and colleagues, and leaves behind a foundational body of work on fisheries oceanography. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Attached gingiva is desirable for the maintenance of gingival health. Although many methods are used to increase the zone of attached gingiva, the modified apically repositioned flap (MARF) technique has the advantages of simplicity and predictability. The short-term follow-up of the MARF technique demonstrated an increase in keratinized tissue and attached gingiva. This study evaluated long-term results of the MARF technique as used to increase the apicocoronal dimensions of keratinized tissue and attached gingiva in 28 sites (25 patients; average follow-up of 9 years). There was a statistically significant increase in keratinized tissue and attached gingiva with no increase in probing depths or gingival recession. Bioenergy carbon capture and storage (BECCS) systems can serve as decarbonization pathways for climate mitigation. Perennial grasses are a promising second‐generation lignocellulosic bioenergy feedstock for BECCS expansion, but optimizing their sustainability, productivity, and climate mitigation potential requires an evaluation of how nitrogen (N) fertilizer strategies interact with greenhouse gas (GHG) and soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics. Furthermore, crop and fertilizer choice can affect the soil microbiome which is critical to soil organic matter turnover, nutrient cycling, and sustaining crop productivity but these feedbacks are poorly understood due to the paucity of data from certain agroecosystems. Here, we examine the climate mitigation potential and soil microbiome response to establishing two functionally different perennial grasses, switchgrass (Panicum virgatum, C4) and tall wheatgrass (Thinopyrum ponticum, C3), in a cool semi‐arid agroecosystem under two fertilizer applications, a novel cyanobacterial biofertilizer (CBF) and urea. We find that in contrast to the C4 grass, the C3 grass achieved 98% greater productivity and had a higher N use efficiency when fertilized. For both crops, the CBF produced the same biomass enhancement as urea. Non‐CO2 GHG fluxes across all treatments were low and we observed a 3‐year net loss of SOC under the C4 crop and a net gain under the C3 crop at a 0–30 cm soil depth regardless of fertilization. Finally, we detected crop‐specific changes in the soil microbiome, including an increased relative abundance of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi under the C3, and potentially pathogenic fungi in the C4 grass. Taken together, these findings highlight the potential of CBF‐fertilized C3 crops as a second‐generation bioenergy feedstock in semi‐arid regions as a part of a climate mitigation strategy. Problems with spatial (geographical) and temporal scales in fisheries research and management have become better known over the past few years. However, technological and some institutional scales, along with essential contextual dimensions (policy, intellectual, and academic) are also important. We discuss fisheries management in general with respect to these matters and their interactions. We also provide recommendations for addressing these issues, both in general and with particular reference to local fisheries. These are: (1) recognize the importance of fishers' knowledge across all scales; (2) recognize fishers' motivations, especially at the local/community scale; (3) thus expand the nature of the information used for management; (4) match the spatial management scales to those of the fish and the fishers; (5) recognize the limitations of large institutions to manage fisheries at local scales; (6) recognize the limits of time-series data; and (7) develop better indicators for fishing effort. We present the results of optical and near-IR spectroscopy and multicolor photometry of the emission-line star MWC 645, which exhibits the B[e] phenomenon. The presence of positionally variable absorption lines of a cool star detected for the first time indicates that the object is a binary system. Using a combination of the photometric and spectroscopic data as well as the Gaia EDR3 distance (D = 6.5 ± 0.9 kpc), we disentangled the components’ contributions and estimated their surface temperatures and luminosities (18, 000 ± 2000 K and 4250 ± 250 K, log L / L ⊙ = 4.0 ± 0.5 and 3.1 ± 0.3 for the hot and cool components, respectively). Quasi-cyclic short-period (months) and long-period (∼4 yr) photometric variations were detected in both optical and near-IR regions, and are most likely due to variable circumstellar extinction. Our analysis suggests that MWC 645 is a member of the FS CMa group. The object’s properties can be described by an evolutionary model of a close binary system that currently undergoes a nonconservative mass transfer between intermediate-mass stars (e.g., 7 M ⊙ + 2.8 M ⊙). Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the results of adjunctive Er,Cr:YSGG laser therapy with scaling and root planing (SRP) as compared with SRP alone in the treatment of moderate to severe periodontitis.Methods: Fifteen adults (aged 27 to 65 years) with 90 nonadjacent sites probing ≥ 5 mm were treated in split-mouth design with SRP and laser therapy versus SRP alone. Probing pocket depth (PPD), gingival recession (GR), clinical attachment level (CAL), plaque, and bleeding on probing were collected at baseline, 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months. Patient reported outcomes were measured to assess pain, sensitivity, and satisfaction.Results: Clinical improvements were similar for test and control sites with no statistically significant difference. At 12 months, the average PPD reduced from 6.1 to 4.2 mm for test and 6.2 to 4.3 mm for control sites. GR increased by 0.4 mm at test and control sites. CAL increased from 6.8 to 5.3 mm for test and 6.9 to 5.5 mm for control sites. Clinical outcomes were stratified by baseline PPD ( = 5, = 6 and ≥7 mm) and analyzed for number of sites that reduced (≤4 mm). No significant difference was observed when the baseline PPD was 5 or 6 mm. Test sites with baseline PPD ≥7 mm demonstrated a statistically significant difference in the percentage of reduced sites when compared with controls at nine (P = 0.001) and 12 months (P = 0.044).Conclusions: Adjunctive Er,Cr:YSGG laser therapy with SRP provides similar clinical improvement in the treatment of moderate-severe periodontitis as SRP alone and may offer some advantage for deeper (≥7 mm) pockets. The complete absence of keratinized attached gingiva on the buccal surface of a tooth can make the area more susceptible to gingival recession. The modified apically repositioned flap (MARF) technique is an effective procedure to increase the dimensions of attached gingiva in areas that present with some existing keratinized tissue. The objective of this case report is to present long-term clinical and histologic evidence that the MARF technique can be used to create attached gingiva in areas that lack keratinized tissue. B-site ordered 4d1 and 5d1 double perovskites have a number of potential exotic ground states including multipolar order, quantum spin liquids and valence bond glass states. These arise from the complex interactions of spin-orbital entangled Jeff = 3/2 pseudospins on the geometrically frustrated fcc lattice. The 4d1 Mo5+ perovskite Ba2YMoO6 has been suggested to have a valence bond glass ground state. Here we report on the low temperature properties of powder samples of isostructural Ba2LuMoO6: the only other known cubic 4d1 perovskite with one magnetic cation. Our muon spectroscopy experiments show that magnetism in this material remains dynamic down to 60 mK without any spin freezing or magnetic order. A singlet-triplet excitation with a gap of Δ = 28 meV is observed in inelastic neutron scattering. These results are interpreted as a disordered valence bond glass ground state similar to Ba2YMoO6. Our results highlight the differences of the 4d1 double perovskites in comparison to cubic 5d1 analogues, which have both magnetic and multipolar order. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We introduce a simple method to extract the nuclear coherent and isotope incoherent, spin incoherent, and magnetic neutron scattering cross section components from powder scattering data measured using a single neutron beam polarization direction and a position-sensitive detector with large out-of-plane coverage. The method draws inspiration from polarized small-angle neutron scattering and contrasts with conventional so-called "xyz" polarization analysis on wide-angle instruments, which requires measurements with three orthogonal polarization directions. The viability of the method is demonstrated on both simulated and experimental data for the classical "spin ice" system Ho2Ti2O7, the latter from the LET direct geometry spectrometer at the ISIS facility. The cross section components can be reproduced with good fidelity by either fitting the out-of-plane angle dependence around a Debye–Scherrer cone or grouping the data by angle and performing a matrix inversion. Robust strategic enrollment management plans include an integrated focus on student retention. While Piedmont University has seen steady new student growth over the past few years, retention rates had dropped from the mid-70s to an alltime low of 62 percent. The Retention Vortex was created as a internal communication protocol that pulls together disparate units across the campus with an ultimate result of increasing the retention rate to 77 percent in three years. Marine ecosystems on continental shelves face multiple challenges due to anthropogenic disturbances, many of which can change the seawater stoichiometry (C:N:P) and consequently elemental ratios of phytoplankton. This change in food quality may not be tolerated by all grazers and predators. Gelatinous and soft-bodied zooplankton (GZ) might be more resilient to such changes. We sampled GZ species in neritic and oceanic waters of the Northeast Pacific off British Columbia, Canada, determined their phosphorus (P) content and elemental ratios (C/P, N/P), and analysed intraspecific variability associated with size and ontogeny. P content was measured for twelve GZ taxa. P % DW (dry weight) decreased with size for the hydrozoan Aequorea sp., scyphozoans Aurelia labiata, Cyanea capillata, and the thaliacean Salpa aspera, and differed significantly for two development stages of the salp S. aspera. While C/P and N/P were mostly size and stage independent, they were highly variable. C/P values of GZ were generally higher than values of crustacean zooplankton, indicating that GZ represent poor-quality prey for non-GZ predators, and that GZ may have a higher resilience towards P-limited (low quality) prey. Changing ocean conditions and nutrient stoichiometry of prey may favour GZ, although large variability in P dynamics among GZ taxa and uncertainty about future ocean stoichiometry changes make generalisations difficult. Reformation of the lost interdental papilla remains one of the most challenging goals for clinicians. When a single tooth is replaced with an implant, the papilla between the tooth and the implant can often be maintained or predictably reformed as long as the adjacent tooth’s periodontal attachment and bone are preserved. However, if the periodontal support is compromised on the neighboring natural tooth, the papilla will often be deficient or missing. The cases presented herein demonstrate long-term follow-up of successful reformation of periodontal/peri-implant tissue contours, including reconstruction of lost interproximal bone and papilla at periodontally compromised sites using a combined hard and soft tissue surgical approach. Background: Standardized patients (SPs) are essential stakeholders in the multiple mini interviews (MMIs) that are increasingly used to assess medical school applicants' interpersonal skills. However, there is little evidence for their inclusion in the development of instruments. Objective: This study aimed to describe the process and evaluate the impact of having SPs co-design and cocreate a global measurement question that assesses medical school applicants' readiness for medical school and acceptance status. Methods: This study used an exploratory, sequential, and mixed methods study design. First, we evaluated the initial MMI program and determined the next quality improvement steps. Second, we held a collaborative workshop with SPs to codevelop the assessment question and response options. Third, we evaluated the created question and the additional MMI rubric items through statistical tests based on 1084 applicants' data from 3 cohorts of applicants starting in the 2018-2019 academic year. The internal reliability of the MMI was measured using a Cronbach a test, and its prediction of admission status was tested using a forward stepwise binary logistic regression. Results: Program evaluation indicated the need for an additional quantitative question to assess applicant readiness for medical school. In total, 3 simulation specialists, 2 researchers, and 21 SPs participated in a workshop leading to a final global assessment question and responses. The Cronbach a's were >0.8 overall and in each cohort year. The final stepwise logistic model for all cohorts combined was statistically significant (P<.001), explained 9.2% (R2) of the variance in acceptance status, and correctly classified 65.5% (637/972) of cases. The final model consisted of 3 variables: empathy, rank of readiness, and opening the encounter. Conclusions: The collaborative nature of this project between stakeholders, including nonacademics and researchers, was vital for the success of this project. The SP-created question had a significant impact on the final model predicting acceptance to medical school. Backward angle (u-channel) scattering provides complementary information for studies of hadron spectroscopy and structure, but has been less comprehensively studied than the corresponding forward angle case. As a result, the physics of u-channel scattering poses a range of new experimental and theoretical opportunities and questions. We summarize recent progress in measuring and understanding high energy reactions with baryon charge exchange in the u-channel, as discussed in the first Backward angle (u-channel) Physics Workshop. In particular, we discuss backward angle measurements and their theoretical description via both hadronic models and the collinear factorization approach, and discuss planned future measurements of u-channel physics. Background: AMSTAR-2 is a 16-item assessment tool to check the quality of a systematic review and establish whether the most important elements are reported. ROBIS is another assessment tool which was designed to evaluate the level of bias present within a systematic review. Our objective was to compare, contrast and establish both inter-rater reliability and usability of both tools as part of two overviews of systematic reviews. Strictly speaking, one tool assesses methodological quality (AMSTAR-2) and the other assesses risk of bias (ROBIS), but there is considerable overlap between the tools in terms of the signalling questions. Methods: Three reviewers independently assessed 31 systematic reviews using both tools. The inter-rater reliability of all sub-sections using each instrument (AMSTAR-2 and ROBIS) was calculated using Gwet's agreement coefficient (AC1 for unweighted analysis and AC2 for weighted analysis). Results: Thirty-one systematic reviews were included. For AMSTAR-2, the median agreement for all questions was 0.61. Eight of the 16 AMSTAR-2 questions had substantial agreement or higher (> 0.61). For ROBIS, the median agreement for all questions was also 0.61. Eleven of the 24 ROBIS questions had substantial agreement or higher. Conclusion: ROBIS is an effective tool for assessing risk of bias in systematic reviews and AMSTAR-2 is an effective tool at assessing quality. The median agreement between raters for both tools was identical (0.61). Reviews that included a meta-analysis were easier to rate with ROBIS; however, further developmental work could improve its use in reviews without a formal synthesis. When the transition temperature of a continuous phase transition is tuned to absolute zero, new ordered phases and physical behaviour emerge in the vicinity of the resulting quantum critical point. Sr3Ru2O7 can be tuned through quantum criticality with magnetic field at low temperature. Near its critical field Bc it displays the hallmark T-linear resistivity and a T log (1 / T) electronic heat capacity behaviour of strange metals. However, these behaviours have not been related to any critical fluctuations. Here we use inelastic neutron scattering to reveal the presence of collective spin fluctuations whose relaxation time and strength show a nearly singular variation with magnetic field as Bc is approached. The large increase in the electronic heat capacity and entropy near Bc can be understood quantitatively in terms of the scattering of conduction electrons by these spin-fluctuations. On entering the spin-density-wave ordered phase present near Bc, the fluctuations become stronger suggesting that the order is stabilised through an "order-by-disorder" mechanism. Sr3Ru2O7 exhibits a quantum critical point tunable by magnetic field and has been widely used in the study of criticality. Here, by using inelastic neutron scattering, the authors measure collective magnetic excitations near the quantum critical point and relate them to thermodynamic properties and spin density wave order. Aim: Diverticular disease is an increasingly common problem in Western society with a variety of treatment options for those presenting with acute diverticulitis, dependent on clinical presentation. Additionally, there is significant international variability in the index management, and few published data on real‐world clinical practice. The aim of DAMASCUS is to identify areas of practice variability and their potential association with differences in short‐ and medium‐term clinical outcomes. Methods and analysis: DAMASCUS is an international, collaborative, prospective observational study, recruiting patients from over 200 sites across six continents. The study opened in October 2020, with a rolling start. Identification of new sites ceased in February 2021 and data collection will cease in August 2021. All adult patients diagnosed with acute diverticulitis (radiologically or intra‐operatively) at each participating centre will be included. The primary objective of DAMASCUS is to assess for national and international variability in the presentation and index management of acute diverticulitis (medical, interventional radiology and surgical). Secondary objectives include assessing 30‐day and 6‐month clinical outcome data (readmission, re‐intervention, morbidity and mortality) and variations in surgical procedures for those undergoing surgery. All data will be recorded and managed using a secure REDCap electronic data capture tool and analysed using Stata (SE) version 16.1. The results will be reported in accordance with the STROBE statement. Conclusion: By analysing variations in the management of acute diverticulitis and the subsequent outcomes, DAMASCUS will be an important step towards identifying optimal care for patients with diverticulitis. With rising demand for and shortage of genetic counseling (GC), tools to deliver pretest informed consent across practice settings are needed to improve access to GT and precision care. Here, we report on Evaluation and Management for Prostate Oncology, Wellness, and Risk (EMPOWER), a patient-choice study for pretest video-based genetic education (VBGE) versus GC to inform urgent practice needs. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Men with PCA or at risk for PCA (family history of PCA) were eligible and could choose pretest VBGE or GC. Outcomes included decisional conflict for GT, change in genetics knowledge, satisfaction, and intention to share results with family and/or providers. Descriptive statistics summarized results with counts and percentages for categorical variables and mean ± standard deviation for continuous variables. Data were compared with Fisher's exact, chi-squared, or Wilcoxon two-sample tests. Mean change in genetics knowledge was compared with t tests. The significance level was set a priori at.05. RESULTS: Data on the first 127 participants were analyzed. Characteristics were White (85.8%), bachelor's degree (66.9%), and PCA diagnosis (90.6%). The majority chose VBGE (71%) versus GC (29%; P <.001). No differences were observed in decisional conflict for GT or satisfaction. Cancer genetics knowledge improved in both groups without significant difference (+0.9 VBGE, +1.8 GC, P =.056). Men who chose VBGE had higher intention to share GT results (96.4% VBGE v 86.4% GC, P =.02). Both groups had high rates of GT uptake (VBGE 94.4%, GC 92%). CONCLUSION: A substantial proportion of men opted for pretest VBGE, with comparable patient-reported outcomes and uptake of GT. Climate change is driving biogeographic shifts in marine zooplankton. In the northeast (NE) Pacific, the distribution of the estuarine copepod, Acartia tonsa (Dana, 1849), is generally limited to California except during marine warming events where it is found as far north as British Columbia (BC). Documentation of such events relies on accurate species identification. Phylogenetic reconstruction of the genus Acartia using 768 mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) sequences collected worldwide demonstrates that NE Pacific A. tonsa is distinct from all conspecifics and congeners. Males of NE Pacific A. tonsa are larger with slight differences in the fifth pair of legs as compared to geographically isolated conspecifics. Accordingly, we propose NE Pacific A. tonsa be reclassified to Acartia arbruta. Analysis of mitochondrial 16S ribosomal RNA DNA sequences from 154 specimens of A. arbruta collected from California, Oregon and BC suggests that A. arbruta detected in BC is a mixture of southern populations. Southern populations are likely driven north during "warm" phases of the oceanographic processes indexed by the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, which is positively correlated with A. arbruta biomass anomalies on the continental shelf of Vancouver Island, BC. Background: Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) in research is increasingly being utilized to better connect patients and researchers. The Patient Engagement Studio (PES) supports PPI in research by working directly with researchers throughout various stages of their projects. Recently, two researchers presented to the PES for assistance with their project, Embryo+™. The purpose of Embryo+™ is to decrease miscarriage rates using RNA sequencing technology that screens for the most viable embryos. To date, no examples of PPI directly in the planning or implementation of bench research concerning in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer have been identified. Main body: Embryo+™ researchers met in-person with the PES two times (fall 2019; each meeting had 9 PES members in attendance) for initial feedback and protocol development. After these meetings, PES leadership and Embryo+™ researchers decided that the unique nature of the project merited a PPI evaluation. Subsequent evaluation of engagement efforts occurred by reviewing the PES reports for the Embryo+™ researchers, conducting two recorded web-based discussion meetings with the PES (summer 2020; meeting 1 n = 7; meeting 2 n = 6), and a brief survey (n = 13). The discussion meetings provided an opportunity for the PES members to define engagement themes through consensus via verbal agreement to the studio director's periodic summaries during the discussions. Combining survey results and PES themes allowed for a broad discussion for meaningful engagement. The Embryo+™ researchers established trust with the patients by changing some of their language in response to patient suggestions, allowing for unintended ethical conversations, and implementing the patient developed protocols. Overall, the patient experts thought this project was very meaningful and valuable, quantified by a mean loyalty score 89.43 (s.d. 10.29). Conclusion: Bench science researchers may need additional PPI training prior to engaging with patient groups. PPI in this project was successful in large part due to this training, where the director emphasized the importance of gaining trust with the patients. The researchers applied what they learned and several examples of how to develop trust with patients are discussed. If trust is established, PPI in an ethically charged, basic science research study can be both valuable and successful. Patient and public involvement has been shown to answer questions that matter to patients, increase enrollment in studies, and improve the spread of research results to the public. Recently, two researchers presented their project, Embryo+™, to the studio during the planning stage of their study. This project aims to use a new testing technology to reduce miscarriage rates. The researchers presented to the studio twice (fall 2019), and two follow-up meetings were conducted with the patients (summer 2020). Also, the patients completed a survey evaluating how engaged they felt with the project. Through the meetings, the researchers changed their language in response to patient feedback, and patients developed project protocols. Survey results showed that the patients thought this project was very meaningful and valuable. Overall, this evaluation shows that patients can add value to contentious bench science projects, particularly in the field of Assistive Reproductive Technology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effects of climate warming on ecosystem dynamics are widespread throughout the world's oceans. In the Northeast Pacific, large‐scale climate patterns such as the El Niño/Southern Oscillation and Pacific Decadal Oscillation, and recently unprecedented warm ocean conditions from 2014 to 2016, referred to as a marine heatwave (MHW), resulted in large‐scale ecosystem changes. Larval fishes quickly respond to environmental variability and are sensitive indicators of ecosystem change. Categorizing ichthyoplankton dynamics across marine ecosystem in the Northeast Pacific can help elucidate the magnitude of assemblage shifts, and whether responses are synchronous or alternatively governed by local responses to regional oceanographic conditions. We analyzed time‐series data of ichthyoplankton abundances from four ecoregions in the Northeast Pacific ranging from subarctic to subtropical: the Gulf of Alaska (1981–2017), British Columbia (2001–2017), Oregon (1998–2017), and the southern California Current (1981–2017). We assessed the impact of the recent (2014–2016) MHW and how ichthyoplankton assemblages responded to past major climate perturbations since 1981 in these ecosystems. Our results indicate that the MHW caused widespread changes in the ichthyoplankton fauna along the coast of the Northeast Pacific Ocean, but impacts differed between marine ecosystems. For example, abundances for most dominant taxa were at all‐time lows since the beginning of sampling in the Gulf of Alaska and British Columbia, while in Oregon and the southern California Current species richness increased as did abundances of species associated with warmer waters. Lastly, species associated with cold waters also increased in abundances close to shore in southern California during the MHW, a pattern that was distinctly different from previous El Niño events. We also found several large‐scale, synchronized ichthyoplankton assemblage composition shifts during past major climate events. Current climate projections suggest that MHWs will become more intense and thus our findings can help project future changes in larval dynamics, allowing for improved ecosystem management decisions. The Strait of Georgia, Canada, has complex interactions among natural and human pressures that confound understanding of changes in this system. We report on the interannual variability in biomass of 12 zooplankton taxonomic groups in the deep (bottom depths greater than 50 m) central and northern Strait of Georgia from 1996 to 2018, and their relationships with 10 physical variables. Total zooplankton biomass was dominated (76%) by large-sized crustaceans (euphausiids, large and medium size calanoid copepods, amphipods). The annual anomaly of total zooplankton biomass was highest in the late 1990s, lowest in the mid-2000s, and generally above its climatological (1996–2010) average after 2011, although many individual groups had different patterns. Two latent trends (derived from dynamic factor analyses) described the variability of annual biomass anomalies underlying all zooplankton groups: a U-shaped trend with its minimum in the mid-2000s, and a declining trend from 2001 to 2011. Two latent trends also described the physical variables. The variability represented by these four latent trends clustered into two periods: 1996–2006, with generally declining zooplankton biomass and increasing salinities, and 2007–2018, with increasing zooplankton biomass and decreasing salinities. ARIMA modelling showed sea surface salinity at Entrance Island in the middle Strait of Georgia, the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, and the peak date of the spring phytoplankton bloom were significantly related to the two latent zooplankton trends. ARIMA models comparing zooplankton and physical variables with the marine survivals of four salmon populations which enter the Strait as juveniles (Chinook: Cowichan River, Puntledge River, Harrison River; Coho: Big Qualicum River) all included zooplankton groups consistent with known salmon prey; prominent among the physical variables were sea surface salinity and variables representing the flow from the Fraser River. These regressions explained (adjR2) 38 to 85% of the annual variability in marine survival rates of these salmon populations over the study time period. Although sea temperature was important in some relationships between zooplankton biomass and salmon marine survival, salinity was a more frequent and more important variable, consistent with its influence on the hydrodynamics of the Strait of Georgia system. Wheat (Triticum spp.) dominates dryland grain crop production in the North American Great Plains and other regions with semi‐arid steppe climates. A common practice is to alternate winter or spring wheat with a 14‐ to 21‐mo fallow period to allow for soil‐water recharge, despite economic inefficiencies and environmental degradation. Replacing fallow with non‐cereal grain and seed crops often reduces future wheat yields due to increased water stress during grain fill. The use of annual forages may not have the disadvantages associated with grain and seed crops. The objective of this review was to determine benefits and challenges of incorporating annual forages into dryland wheat systems in semi‐arid steppe climates, using the Great Plains within the United States as a model system. Results indicate that: (a) cool‐ and warm‐season, annual grass and broadleaf species can be grown for forage across the region; (b) forage production will be less risky than grain and seed crop production under predicted climate‐change scenarios; (c) grazing annual forages may offer advantages (e.g., nutrient cycling, improved soil structure, added revenue from livestock) over mechanically harvesting annual forages; (d) the lack of infrastructure and local markets impede the use of annual forages to diversify wheat‐based cropping systems in the region; and (e) limited networking among researchers hinders the advancement in knowledge on how annual forages can be used to improve dryland wheat system resilience. Background: Enamel matrix derivative (EMD) is widely used for regeneration therapy in dental clinical situations, but the mechanism of EMD bioactivity remains obscure. To clarify this mechanism, we focused on the formation of connective tissue and blood vessels. The aim of this study was to confirm whether EMD induces the formation of connective tissue and blood vessels by using the diffusion chamber (DC) technique. Materials and Methods: Individual DCs containing EMD (DC-EMD) or propylene glycol alginate (PGA) were implanted subcutaneously in rat dorsum. At 4 weeks after the implantation, histological analysis of DCs was performed using azan staining. Results: DC-EMD induced the formation of much larger amounts of connective tissue containing abundant blood vessels than did DC-PGA. Conclusion: The results indicated that EMD can induce the formation of both connective tissue and blood vessels. Discrepancies in the low-energy quasiparticle dispersion extracted from angle-resolved photoemission, scanning tunneling spectroscopy, and quantum oscillation data are common and have long haunted the field of quantum matter physics. Here, we directly test the consistency of results from these three techniques by comparing data from the correlated metal Sr2RhO4. Using established schemes for the interpretation of the experimental data, we find good agreement for the Fermi surface topography and carrier effective masses. Hence, the apparent absence of such an agreement in other quantum materials, including the cuprates, suggests that the electronic states in these materials are of different, non-Fermi liquid-like nature. Finally, we discuss the potential and challenges in extracting carrier lifetimes from photoemission and quasiparticle interference data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rotating summer fallow with wheat (Triticum spp.) is done in dryland grain farming at upper latitudes to stabilize yields over time and to prevent crop failure. However, summer fallow is costly since weeds must be controlled and crops are not grown. Replacing summer fallow with grain crops can generate low economic returns. Previous research indicated that annual cool‐season forages can be substituted for summer fallow in dryland cropping systems. Our objective was to determine if annual warm‐season species were suited for forage production in monocultures and polycultures in the U.S. northern Great Plains. Dry matter (DM) production by 20 warm‐ and cool‐season crop monocultures and 4 polycultures was determined across six environments during 2016, and by 25 warm‐ and cool‐season crop monocultures and polycultures across four environments from 2016 through 2018. Maize (Zea mays L.) monoculture produced forage DM in amounts equal to, or greater than, those produced by other warm‐ and cool‐season crop treatments (P < 0.05). Maize DM production averaged 2.5 to 5.7 Mg ha−1, depending on the study and environment. Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.), foxtail millet [Setaria italica (L.) P. Beauv.] and sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) also produced relatively large amounts of forage DM. Polycultures failed to produce more DM than monocultures consistently (P > 0.40). These results indicate that maize and other warm‐season crops are adapted for dryland forage production in cool regions at upper latitudes. This commentary welcomes Held's (2020) article on epistemic violence in psychological science. When psychologists employ social categories, such as "Black people" or "the Japanese" as "fixed factors" in their experiments, they may ignore the social construction of these categories within a cultural context. This can lead to cultural conceptions being enshrined in a methodology that has a tendency to essentialize social categories, with their inferred psychological attributes simply becoming a question of their "accuracy" or "inaccuracy" and not about the history and ideologies within which they are formed. Cultural psychology and Indigenous psychologies challenge this ideological neutrality of social categories, which is illustrated by Hinton's cultural model of stereotypes. Ignoring the evidence that traditional academic psychology is a cultural psychology (rather than an objective science) simply maintains the dominant ideological structures of epistemic violence within it.
