Thermobarometry in the Northern Snake Range metamorphic core complex (Nevada, USA) implies pre‐extensional burial of footwall rocks to 21–30 km depths, while geologic field relationships support 7–13 km pre‐extensional depths. This has fueled a 40‐year‐long debate, which has far‐reaching implications for how pressure data are interpreted in orogenic settings. Here, we test published models for deep burial by integrating regional cross‐section reconstructions with new (n = 95) and published (n = 132) peak temperature measurements, field relationships and published geophysical data. Burial of Neoproterozoic‐Cambrian metasedimentary footwall rocks to 21–30 km depths is incompatible with a regional seismic reflection cross‐section that interprets the top of Precambrian crystalline basement at 17–20 km depths. Two reconstructed cross‐sections define 42 km and 50–65 km of displacement on the master detachment fault and demonstrate that the higher displacement ranges (>66–94 km and >76–102 km, respectively) necessary to exhume rocks from 21 to 30 km depths are not possible without spatially overlapping Cambrian rocks preserved in its footwall and hanging wall. The 22°C/km average Late Cretaceous thermal gradient predicted by thermobarometry is incompatible with the 46 ± 10°C/km Late Cretaceous peak thermal gradient that we calculate down to 15–20 km pre‐extensional depths. Field relationships that rule out large‐magnitude shortening invalidate models for deep footwall burial via thrust or reverse faulting. We conclude that there is no scenario for deep burial that is compatible with structural/geophysical constraints, crustal thermal architecture, and field relationships. This necessitates a non‐lithostatic interpretation for pressures from the Northern Snake Range, similar to recent interpretations for other Cordilleran metamorphic core complexes. Lithospheric foundering is hypothesized to contribute to the formation of Earth's largest continental plateaus, but the predicted effects remain poorly constrained, especially considering variations in crustal strength. Here we propose that lithospheric foundering involving a hot, weak crust can explain aspects of topography and crustal deformation in mountain belts. We explore this hypothesis using numerical models of orogenesis and foundering in the Southern Puna Plateau in the Central Andes. Contrary to previous models of foundering involving a strong crust, which are characterized by subsidence and shortening, a weak crust results in surface uplift and upper‐crustal horizontal extension, which is accommodated by horizontal shortening in peripheral regions. Our model explains data such as the timing and location of exhumation and basin sedimentation as a response to foundering. The model also shows that foundering is capable of converting a high‐relief, broken‐foreland region into a high‐elevation, low‐relief plateau in a convergent tectonic setting. This process could contribute to the formation of large plateaus such as Tibet and the Central Andes, which are composed of hot, felsic, and therefore weak crust. We present numerical modeling experiments that show that a lithospheric drip can cause crustal flow and spreading, even when it takes place within a convergent tectonic setting, such as a major mountain belt. By comparing our models to geologic data from the Central Andes, we suggest that this scenario can explain many intriguing geological puzzles within the Puna Plateau, such as the timing and distribution of horizontal extension, the thickening of the crust, and the uplift history of the plateau. Future studies should consider the possibility of a weak, flowing crust during a lithospheric foundering event. The Porgera Transfer Zone (PTZ) is a major crustal and probably lithospheric structure across Papua New Guinea recording >50 km offset of ophiolites and very different patterns of geology and topography on either side. In the Late Jurassic, the PTZ probably separated oceanic crust and thick Jurassic Om shales to the west from a continental promontory to the east. During the Late Miocene to Recent orogenesis, the differential compression of these features is interpreted to have created a dextral strike slip fault across the fold belt with pull-apart basins at sites of fault relays. This facilitated the ascent of intrusions and mineralization at Porgera. The acquisition of high-resolution LIDAR data semi-regionally around the Porgera Gold Mine greatly improved interpretation of the regional geology and particularly the recognition of normal faults. By correlating with sparse dip data and paly-dated samples, it was possible to create stratigraphic sections and interpret structural cross-sections using the LIDAR data. As the area involved strike–slip offsets, it was important to construct sections in multiple orientations in order to interpret the 3D geology. Both dips and fault orientation could be directly inferred from the LIDAR data such that sections could be constructed orthogonally to them. A balanced, restored and forward-modelled cross-section illustrates the interaction between thrust faults and normal faults during compression and that it was synchronous with the development of a pull-apart basin. A semi-regional 3D geological model, which was developed mainly from the LIDAR data, supports the hypothesis of inversion of the thick Om beds to the west before or during compression of the continental promontory to the east resulting in dextral strike–slip offsets across the PTZ. A jog or relay in the faults occurred and caused a pull-apart collapse basin to develop in the area of the Porgera mine. Structural elements of the Svecokarelide pericratonic zone in the Karelian Massif (SE Fennoscandia) were identified and described. They were formed after the major events of the Svecofennian tectogenesis. The age ranges of the orogenic stage and the post-orogenic extension collapse were dated, and the depth levels of the corresponding structures were determined. The differentiated exhumation process of deep complexes of the post-Proterozoic Savo–Ladoga movable zone was visualized. Cordilleran orogens are complex tectonic systems, strongly influenced by lithospheric deformation and exhumation. However, in the type region of the Central Andes, the timing and mechanisms of deformation and mountain building remain poorly constrained, especially for the high‐elevation Puna Plateau of NW Argentina. We use geologic mapping, structural cross‐sections, low‐temperature thermochronology, and U‐Pb dating of ash and detrital zircons to elucidate the history and style of orogenic deformation in the Antofalla region of the Puna Plateau. Cooling ages of major reverse fault hanging walls and dated growth strata indicate that crustal shortening activated major reverse faults during the Eocene and continued out‐of‐sequence through the Early Miocene. This protracted period of shortening, which resulted in the filling of the Antofalla Basin, was followed by a transient episode of upper‐crustal E‐W extension on a major normal fault system during the Late Miocene. Pliocene to Quaternary time saw E‐W shortening return to the region. Our structural cross‐section permits only a low magnitude of shortening (∼15–25%), which stands in contrast to the 60‐km thick crust. Triassic to Cretaceous cooling ages from footwall rocks and minor structures indicate that the entire region experienced little exhumation or sedimentation during the Mesozoic, perhaps retaining a crust thickened during multiple episodes of Paleozoic orogenesis. The crust may also reflect lower‐crustal thickening due to the growth of a lithospheric drip during the Late Miocene. Metamorphic timescales harbor crucial information for quantifying lithospheric processes and identifying tectonic regimes. The Orosirian Period is known for global orogenesis during 2.1‒1.8 Ga that possibly signifies the emergence of global-scale plate tectonics. While the metamorphic pressure–temperature (P–T) paths and T/P ratios have been extensively used to characterize 2.1–1.8 Ga orogens, their detailed metamorphic timescales remain underutilized. In this study, we use garnet diffusion modeling to explicitly explore the metamorphic timescales of dominant pelitic granulites in the Jiaobei terrane, the southwest part of the Jiao-Liao-Ji orogenic belt (JLJB), North China Craton. The pelitic granulites record high-pressure granulite-facies metamorphism of 13–14 kbar and 860–870 °C, followed by fast decompression (4‒21 mm yr−1) with some degree of heating to medium-pressure granulite-facies retrogression of 7‒8 kbar and 865‒950 °C at c. 1.85 Ga. The subsequent cooling is nearly isobaric, but likely nonlinear with initially faster and later slower cooling (17‒32 °C Myr−1, 950/865–700 °C; 5–7 °C Myr−1, 700–600 °C, respectively). The determined clockwise P–T–t path provides evidence for convergent plate boundary processes and the fast exhumation is likely related to an extensional setting. The relatively fast exhumation and cooling rates at high temperatures, as obtained via diffusion chronometry, represent the fastest rates yet reported from 2.1 to 1.8 Ga orogens and are several times to one order of magnitude slower than those observed in modern orogens. In the light of recent numerical modeling, we suggest that these slower metamorphic rates of the c. 2.1‒1.8 Ga JLJB orogenic rocks are consistent with the features of orogenesis occurring at higher mantle temperatures, such as hotter orogenic thermal structures, less over-thickened orogenic crusts, and distributed strain patterns. Therefore, the timescale information from the JLJB indicates that Paleoproterozoic plate tectonics under higher temperatures might have caused subduction and collisional orogenesis to be distinct from their modern style. Notably, the detailed ancient metamorphic timescales achieved by diffusion modeling cannot be resolved geochronologically, highlighting the necessity of applying diffusion chronometry to quantify ancient tectonic processes. The Himalaya are among the youngest and highest mountains in the world, but the exact timing of their uplift and origins of their biodiversity are still in debate. The Himalayan region is a relatively small area but with exceptional diversity and endemism. One common hypothesis to explain the rich montane diversity is uplift-driven diversification—that orogeny creates conditions favoring rapid in situ speciation of resident lineages. We test this hypothesis in the Himalayan region using amphibians and reptiles, two environmentally sensitive vertebrate groups. In addition, analysis of diversification of the herpetofauna provides an independent source of information to test competing geological hypotheses of Himalayan orogenesis. We conclude that the origins of the Himalayan herpetofauna date to the early Paleocene, but that diversification of most groups was concentrated in the Miocene. There was an increase in both rates and modes of diversification during the early to middle Miocene, together with regional interchange (dispersal) between the Himalaya and adjacent regions. Our analyses support a recently proposed stepwise geological model of Himalayan uplift beginning in the Paleocene, with a subsequent rapid increase of uplifting during the Miocene, finally giving rise to the intensification of the modern South Asian Monsoon. Deciphering the relationship between polyphase tectonic foliations and their associated mineral assemblages is significant in understanding the process from diagenesis to low‐/medium‐/high‐grade metamorphism. It can provide information related to strain, metamorphic conditions and overprinting relationships and so help reveal the tectonic evolution of orogenesis. In this study, we predominately focus on the formation of foliations and their related minerals, as developed in two separate basins. First of all, two stages of axial plane cleavages (S1 and S2) were recognized in the Hongyanjing inter‐arc basin, the formation of the S1 axial plane cleavage is associated with mica rotation and elongation in mudstones in the local area. The pencil structure of S2 formed during the refolding phase, the minerals in the sedimentary rocks not changing their shape and orientation. Secondly, in the Liao‐Ji backarc basin, foliations include diagenetic foliation (bedding parallel foliation), tectonic S1 foliation (secondary foliation or axial plane cleavage of S0 folding) and crenulation cleavage (S2). The formation mechanism of foliation changes from mineral rotation or elongation and mineral solution transfer in S1 to crystal‐plastic deformation, dynamic recrystallization and micro‐folding in S2. Many index metamorphic minerals formed from low‐grade to medium‐grade consist of biotites, garnets, staurolite and kyanite, constituting a typical Barrovian metamorphic belt. Accordingly, a new classification of foliation is presented in this study. The foliations can be divided into continuous and disjunctive foliations, based on the existence of microlithons, detectable with the aid of a microscope. Disjunctive foliation can be further sub‐divided into spaced foliation and crenulation cleavage, according to whether (or not) crenulation (micro‐folding) is present. The Trans‐Hudson orogen (THO) is one of the best‐preserved Proterozoic orogens on Earth, largely unaffected by subsequent tectonism, yet its southern extent lies concealed beneath the North American Central Plains. A new 3D resistivity model over the southern orogen is developed and interpreted alongside borehole, potential field, and seismic reflection data. We present the first synoptic crustal view of the southern THO and a new tectonic model of the orogen. Our model reveals high‐conductivity belts marking paleo‐subduction zones while the orogen center consists of deeply exhumed relatively dense and mostly magnetic juvenile crust preserved between the deformed margins of the Wyoming and Superior cratons. Complex structure along the western margin suggests convergence began with oblique subduction and the northward transport of severed fragments of the Wyoming Province. High‐conductivity belts are in places offset from upper‐crustal geophysical boundaries, consistent with the thrusting of accreted arcs over the Archean margins during terminal closure. Mountain height at convergent plate margins is limited by the megathrust shear force, but it remains unclear how this constraint affects the topographic evolution and mountain building at the transition from subduction to collision. Generally, mountain height increases during the subduction‐collision transition in response to crustal thickening or processes like mantle delamination and slab breakoff, but the main parameters controlling how much mountain height increases remain poorly understood. Here we show, based on analytical and finite‐element force‐balance models, that the increase in mountain height depends on the magnitude of the megathrust shear force and the reduction of submarine margin relief. During the subduction stage, the shear force is balanced by the gravitational effect of the margin relief and the deviatoric stresses in the upper plate are low. When the submarine margin relief is reduced during the closure of the ocean basin, the effect of the gravitational force decreases and the upper plate experiences enhanced deviatoric compression, which allows the mountain height to increase until a near‐neutral stress state beneath the high mountains is restored. If the increase in mountain height cannot keep pace with the submarine relief reduction, the compression of the upper plate increases by a few tens of MPa, which promotes tectonic shortening and mountain building. Our analysis implies that mountain height can increase by hundreds of meters to a few kilometers during collision, depending primarily on the trench depth during the subduction stage and possible syncollisional changes of the megathrust shear force. Many orogens on the planet result from plate convergence involving subduction of a continental margin. The lithosphere is strongly deformed during mountain building involving subduction of a plate composed generally of accreted continental margin units and some fragments of downgoing oceanic crust and mantle. A complex deformation involving strong partitioning of deformation modes and kinematics produces crustal shortening, accompanied by crustal thickening. Partitioning depends on three main factors: (1) rheologic layering of the lithosphere; (2) interaction between tectonics and surface processes; (3) subduction kinematics and 3D geometry of continental margins (oblique convergence, shape of indenters). Here we present an original view and discussion on the impact of deformation partitioning on the structure and evolution of orogens by examining the Taiwan mountain belt as a case study. Major unsolved questions are addressed through geological observations from the Taiwan orogen and insights from analogue models integrating surface processes. Some of these questions include: What is the role played by décollements or weak zones in crustal deformation and what is the impact of structural heterogeneities inherited from the early extensional history of a rifted passive continental margin? What is the relationship between deep underplating, induced uplift and flow of crustal material during erosion (finite strain evolution during wedge growth)? Are syn-convergent normal faults an effect of deformation partitioning and erosion? What is the role of strain partitioning on the location of major seismogenic faults in active mountain belts? Documenting the processes that facilitate exhumation of ultrahigh‐pressure (UHP) rocks at convergent margins is critical for understanding orogen dynamics. Here, we present structural and temperature data from the Himalayan UHP Tso Morari nappe (TMN) and overlying nappes, which we integrate with published pressure‐temperature‐time constraints to refine interpretations for their structural evolution and exhumation history. Our data indicate that the 5.5‐km‐thick TMN is the upper portion of a penetratively deformed ductile slab, which was extruded via distributed, pure shear‐dominated, top‐down‐to‐east shearing. Strain in the TMN is recorded by high‐strength quartz fabrics (density norms between 1.74 and 2.86) and finite strain data that define 63% transport‐parallel lengthening and 46% transport‐normal shortening. The TMN attained peak temperatures of ~500–600°C, which decrease in the overlying Tetraogal and Mata nappes to ~150–300°C, defining a field gradient as steep as 67°C/km. Within the overlying nappes, quartz fabric strength decreases (density norms between 1.14 and 1.21) and transport‐parallel lengthening and transport‐normal shortening decrease to 14% and 18%, respectively. When combined with published 40Ar/39Ar thermochronometry, quartz fabric deformation temperatures as low as ~330°C indicate that the top‐to‐east shearing that exhumed the TMN continued until ~30 Ma. Peak temperatures constrain the maximum depth of the overlying Mata nappe to 12.5–17.5 km; when combined with published fission‐track thermochronometry, this provides further support that the TMN was not underplated at upper crustal levels until ~30 Ma. The long‐duration, convergence‐subnormal shearing that exhumed the TMN outlasted rapid India‐Asia convergence by ~15 Myr and may be the consequence of strain partitioning during oblique convergence. The results of 40Ar/39Ar dating of pseudotachylytes, first identified in the Paleoproterozoic zonally metamorphosed (greenschist to granulite facies) Ladoga complex of svecofennides, are presented. A wide age range of the formation of pseudotachylytes in the Riphean (1.59–1.31 Ga), presumably caused by the exhumation of deep rocks during the Svecofennian tectonogenesis and the subsequent orogenesis and riftogenesis in southeastern Fennoscandia, has been established. Bhowmik suggested two stages of orogenesis at the southern margin of the Central Indian Tectonic Zone (CITZ): (a) an accretionary orogenesis type at ca. 1.6–1.5 Ga that formed a proto‐Greater Indian Landmass (GIL) through the assembly of arc, back‐arc and continental margins, (b) a Himalayan‐style continental collision event between 1.06 and 0.93 Ga that finally stitched the North and South India blocks to produce the final configuration of the GIL and (c) an intervening phase of extension between 1.5 and 1.06 Ga that led to the opening up of the Sausar Basin and deposition of the Sausar Group of rocks. A Paleozoic subduction complex dominates the Mossman Orogen developed at the northern extremity of the Tasmanides, eastern Australia. Its southern part, displayed in the Broken River Province, is characterised by dismembered ocean-plate stratigraphy in which turbidite-dominated packages and widespread tectonic mélange development are characteristic. The Broken River complex is characterised by formations with quartzose sandstone alternating with those largely formed of sandstone of more labile character. The two compositional groups are considered to reflect separate, age-significant sedimentary regimes, but their ages have hitherto been poorly constrained. With the use of 1082 concordant detrital zircon ages from 13 samples we provide age control for the complex and track its sedimentary provenance. Of quartzose units, the Tribute Hills Arenite and Pelican Range Formation are late Cambrian–Early Ordovician, and the Wairuna Formation is Middle to Late Ordovician, in age. The more labile units (Greenvale, Perry Creek and Kangaroo Hills formations) are collectively of late Silurian–mid-Devonian age. Development of the complex spanned some 130 Myr. Continent-derived sediment involved in accretion of much the complex, from mid-Ordovician to mid-Devonian, was largely sourced from a nearby magmatic arc of late Cambrian–Devonian age, now represented by granitoid plutons of the Macrossan and Pama igneous associations. An older far-field Pacific-Gondwana sediment source is characteristic of early-phase (late Cambrian–Early Ordovician) accretion, in common with sedimentary units of this age generally developed in the Tasmanides. We consider the complex to have grown largely by underplating that positioned younger components beneath those that are older, with out-of-sequence thrust interleaving of these components occurring late in the accretionary history. A Late Devonian contractional folding and cleavage development (Tabberabberan orogenesis) is uniformly expressed across the entire complex and reflects an abrupt change in plate engagement with imposition of a compressional stress regime. The geological framework and tectonics of the East Black Sea region is characterized through balancing a geological cross-section and paleoreconstruction during the Paleogene-Neogene period. The studied area includes the Kerch-Taman trough, the Anapa Swell (a continuation of the immersed part of the Greater Caucasus Orogen), the Tuapse trough, and the Shatsky Swell. This paper is mainly focused on the Russian shelf zone of the Black Sea. The Qilian Block is one of many continental blocks involved in the early Paleozoic orogenesis of the Central China Orogen, which experienced complex interaction with adjacent blocks and orogens. In this study, we present zircon U-Pb-Hf isotopic, whole-rock elemental, and Sr-Nd isotopic data of the early-middle Silurian intrusive rocks in the Lanzhou-Baiyin regions, eastern part of the Qilian Block, to constrain their source and tectonic settings. The Houchangchuan granodiorite and Shichuan monzogranite were emplaced at ca. 437 Ma and ca. 428 Ma, respectively. These granitoids are peraluminous (A/CNK = 1.1-1.3), enriched in LREEs and LILEs (Rb, Th, U, Pb), depleted in HFSEs (Nb, Ta) with negative Eu and Sr anomalies, and have relatively high whole-rock εNd(t), −4.3 to −2.1, and zircon εHf(t), −10.9 to 1.1, values. The Shichuan monzonite is characterized by intermediate SiO2, metaluminous (A/CNK = ~0.8), and high LREEs fractionation with LILEs (Th, U, Pb) enrichment and HFSEs (Nb, Ta) depletion. We suggest the Houchangchuan granodiorite and Shichuan monzogranite were derived from the metasedimentary (metapelitic) source, which could be the Mesoproterozoic basement of the Qilian Block, and the mantle-derived materials injected into their source region. The Shichuan monzonite could have a mantle-derived origin. Integrated with data from previous studies, the early-middle Silurian (437-428 Ma) intrusive rocks in the eastern part of the Qilian Block were formed during the transition period from a syn-collisional to postcollisional setting, relating to the collisional process after the consumption of North Qilian Ocean (Proto-Tethys Ocean) in the northern margin of the Gondwana continent. Foliation Intersection/Inflection Axes within porphyroblasts (FIAs) provide a quantitative approach to microstructural and metamorphic analysis that can be used to integrate multiple deformation and metamorphic events and develop lengthy PT path histories during orogenesis. This paper reviews applications of FIAs for determining (1) porphyroblast rotation vs. nonrotation; (2) inclusion trail orientations and orogenic processes involving changes in the direction of bulk horizontal shortening; (3) in situ age determinations for multiple deformation episodes; (4) P-T-t-d paths of poly-metamorphism in an orogenic belt; and (5) constraining relative plate movement paths within ancient orogens. Quantitative structural and metamorphic data correlated directly to relative plate motions, are currently allowing the tectonic reconstruction of multiply deformed and metamorphosed terrains in orogens around the world. The eastern margin of North America has been shaped by several cycles of supercontinent assembly. These past episodes of orogenesis and continental rifting have likely deformed the lithosphere, but the extent, style, and geometry of this deformation remain poorly known. Measurements of seismic anisotropy in the upper mantle can shed light on past lithospheric deformation, but may also reveal contributions from present-day mantle flow in the asthenosphere. Here we examine SKS waveforms and measure splitting of SKS phases recorded by the MAGIC experiment, a dense transect of seismic stations across the central Appalachians. Our measurements constrain small-scale lateral variations in azimuthal anisotropy and reveal distinct regions of upper mantle anisotropy. Stations within the present-day Appalachian Mountains exhibit fast splitting directions roughly parallel to the strike of the mountains and delay times of about 1.0 s. To the west, transverse component waveforms for individual events reveal lateral variability in anisotropic structure. Stations immediately to the east of the mountains exhibit complicated splitting patterns, more null SKS arrivals, and a distinct clockwise rotation of fast directions. The observed variability in splitting behavior argues for contributions from both the lithosphere and the asthenospheric mantle. We infer that the sharp lateral transition in splitting behavior at the eastern edge of the Appalachians is controlled by a change in anisotropy in the lithospheric mantle. We hypothesize that beneath the Appalachians, SKS splitting reflects lithospheric deformation associated with Appalachian orogenesis, while just to the east this anisotropic signature was modified by Mesozoic rifting. A succession of 5 FIA trends (foliation intersection or inflection axes in porphyroblasts) preserved in high temperature-low pressure regime PreCambrian rocks in the Texas Creek, Arkansas River region reflected by the fold axial plane traces and schistosity data in this region. Similar fold axial plane trace data measured in Palaeozoic rocks in Chester Dome, Vermont, which is high temperature to medium pressure regime, only preserve the effects of the youngest FIAs of the all 5 FIA sets that obtained in this region. The other three FIA sets have no equivalent fold axial planes. This difference from shallow to deeper orogenic regimes reflects decreasing competency at greater pressure with collapse and unfolding of earlier formed folds. We present a tectonic map of the Tauern Window and surrounding units (Eastern Alps, Austria), combined with a series of crustal-scale cross-sections parallel and perpendicular to the Alpine orogen. This compilation, largely based on literature data and completed by own investigations, reveals that the present-day structure of the Tauern Window is primarily characterized by a crustal-scale duplex, the Venediger Duplex (Venediger Nappe system), formed during the Oligocene, and overprinted by doming and lateral extrusion during the Miocene. This severe Miocene overprint was most probably triggered by the indentation of the Southalpine Units east of the Giudicarie Belt, initiating at 23-21 Ma and linked to a lithosphere-scale reorganization of the geometry of mantle slabs. A kinematic reconstruction shows that accretion of European lithosphere and oceanic domains to the Adriatic (Austroalpine) upper plate, accompanied by high-pressure overprint of some of the units of the Tauern Window, has a long history, starting in Turonian time (around 90 Ma) and culminating in Lutetian to Bartonian time (45-37 Ma). The Northern Patagonian Andes have been constructed through multiple mechanisms that range from tectonic inversion of extensional structures of Early to Middle Jurassic age in the Main Andes to Oligocene in the Precordilleran region. These have acted during two distinctive orogenic stages, first in late Early Cretaceous and later in Miocene times Late Oligocene extension separates these two contractional periods and is recorded by half-grabens developed in the retroarc region. The last contractional stage coexists with an eastward foreland expansion of the late Miocene arc whose roots are presently exposed as minor granitic stocks and volcanic piles subordinately in the Main Andes, east of the present arc. As a consequence of this orogenic stage a foreland basin has developed, having progressed from 18 Ma in the main North Patagonian Andes, where the mountain front was flooded by a marine transgression corresponding to the base of the Ñirihuau Formation, to 11 Ma in the foreland area. Cannibalization of this foreland basin occurred initially in the hinterland and then progressed to the foreland zone. Blind structures formed a broken foreland at the frontal zone inferred from growth strata geometries. During Pliocene to Quaternary times most of the contractional deformation was dissipated in the orogenic wedge at the time when the arc front retracted to its present position. The analysis of 3D relief models of the lower Amur region and several adjacent areas suggested that the structure of the region is related to the horizontal tectonic layering of the upper part of the Amur plate. When it was dislocated to the northwest at the terminal Cretaceous, some fragments of the upper layers were displaced not strictly synchronously but with some lag relative to the whole plate. This scenario was responsible for the formation of the main morphostructural elements of the region: river valleys, mountain ranges, and graben series. The Patagonian Andes record a period of Cretaceous-Neogene orogenesis that began with the compressional inversion of a Late Jurassic rift called the Rocas Verdes basin. Detrital zircon ages from sediment that filled the southern part of the basin provide a maximum depositional age of ∼148 Ma, suggesting that the basin opened approximately simultaneously along its length during the Late Jurassic. Structural data and U-Pb isotopic ages on zircon from granite plutons near the Beagle Channel (55°S) show that basin inversion involved two stages of shortening separated by tens of millions of years. An initial stage created a small (∼60 km wide) thrust wedge that placed the basaltic floor of the Rocas Verdes basin on top of adjacent continental crust prior to ∼86 Ma. Structures and metamorphic mineral assemblages preserved in an exhumed middle to lower crustal shear zone in Cordillera Darwin suggest that this obduction was accompanied by south directed subduction of the basaltic crust and underthrusting of continental crust to depths of ∼35 km beneath a coeval volcanic arc. A subsequent stage of out-of-sequence thrusting, culminating in the Paleogene, shortened basement and Upper Jurassic igneous rock in the internal part of the belt by at least ∼50 km, forming a bivergent thrust wedge. This latter period coincided with the exhumation of rocks in Cordillera Darwin and expansion of the fold-thrust belt into the Magallanes foreland basin. This orogen provides an important example of how orogenesis initiated and led to continental underthrusting and obduction of basaltic crust during closure of a quasi-oceanic rift basin. Analysis of detrital zircon from previously geochronologically unconstrained metasedimentary rocks in the eastern Arunta region, using U - Pb LA-ICPMS and SHRIMP, provides ages reconcilable with Australian sources. Maximum depositional ages of the analysed samples fall into two groups, three samples having maximum depositional ages of ca 1780-1760 Ma and two at ca 2510-2490 Ma. Metamorphic monazite from two pelitic rocks provides bimodal age populations of 1773 ± 9 Ma and 325 ± 8 Ma from one sample, and 1719 ± 9 Ma and 341 ± 5 Ma from the second. The age of 1773 ± 9 Ma is the first direct evidence of monazite growth in the interval ca 1780-1770 Ma, and is attributed to high-grade contact metamorphism associated with the proximal emplacement of granodioritic bodies previously thought to be subduction-related. The metamorphic age of 1719 ± 9 Ma is attributed to the Strangways Orogeny (1730-1710 Ma). The Carboniferous ages of 325 ± 8 Ma and 341 ± 5 Ma in both samples are attributed to partial resetting and new growth of monazite during the Alice Springs Orogeny (ca 400-300 Ma). Sm - Nd isotope systematics of the metasedimentary rocks display a large variation ranging from εNd(1760) = - 1.4 to - 8.8 and, when coupled with the detrital-zircon age populations, allow for a locally derived (North Australian Craton) source for the metasedimentary rocks. Analysis of igneous zircon from a felsic layer of the Entia Gneiss Complex intimately interlayered with the metasedimentary rocks yielded a 207Pb/206Pb weighted average age of 1771 ± 10 Ma, interpreted as the crystallisation age of the igneous precursor. This age is indistinguishable within error from that of the granodioritic intrusions (Inkamulla Granodiorite 1773 ± 4 Ma), here thought to be responsible for the high-grade metamorphism in the metasedimentary rocks. Given that the granodioritic bodies have previously been characterised as subduction-related intrusions, the approximately coincident ages of metamorphism, deposition of at least some of the metasedimentary rocks, and the intrusion of voluminous felsic and mafic magmas, suggests that the deposition and metamorphism of the precursor to the metasedimentary rocks may be related to active subduction along the southern margin of the Arunta region. Integrated structural, metamorphic and geochronological data demonstrate the existence of a contractional orogen preserved in the ca 1850 Ma Donington Suite batholith along the eastern margin of the Gawler Craton, South Australia. The earliest structures are a pervasive gneissic foliation developed in the Donington Suite and interleaved metasedimentary rocks. This has been overprinted by isoclinal and non-cylindrical folding, and zones of pervasive non-coaxial shear with north-directed transport, suggesting that deformation was the result of orogenic contraction. SHRIMP U - Pb zircon data indicate that a syn-contractional granitic dyke was emplaced at 1846 ± 4 Ma. Overprinting the contractional structures are a series of discrete, migmatitic high-strain zones that show a normal geometry with a component of oblique dextral shear. U - Pb zircon data from a weakly foliated microgranite in one such shear zone give an emplacement age of 1843 ± 5 Ma. Rare aluminous metasedimentary rocks in the belt preserve a granulite-grade assemblage of garnet + biotite + plagioclase + K-feldspar + silicate melt that formed at ∼600 MPa and ∼750°C. Peak metamorphic garnets are partially replaced by biotite + sillimanite+ cordierite assemblages suggesting post-thermal peak cooling and decompression, and are indicative of a clockwise P - T evolution. Chemical U - Th - Pb electron microprobe ages from monazites in retrograde biotite yield a minimum estimate for the timing of retrogression of ca 1830 Ma, indicating that decompression may be linked to the development of the broadly extensional shear zones and that the clockwise P - T path occurred during a single tectonothermal cycle. By virtue of its large area of exposure of different crustal levels, and preservation of a protracted (~400 million years) Palaeoproterozoic to Mesoproterozoic tectonic evolution, the Mt Isa Inlier is an excellent natural laboratory to study Proterozoic tectonic processes. The inlier preserves evidence of intracontinental basin development, plutonism, low-pressure metamorphism, orogenesis at different crustal levels, and crustal-scale metasomatism. In addition, the Mt Isa Inlier is endowed with a variety of ore deposits, including the Mt Isa Pb – Zn – Ag and Cu deposits, Century Zn – Pb – Ag deposit, Cannington Ag – Pb – Zn deposit, and the Osborne and Ernest Henry iron oxide Cu – Au deposits. Basement rocks were deformed and metamorphosed during the ca 1900 – 1870 Ma Barramundi Orogeny and intruded by the granitic rocks of the ca 1850 Ma Kalkadoon and Ewen Batholiths and their coeval Leichhardt Volcanics. Three stacked and superimposed superbasins evolved between ca 1800 and ca 1595 Ma. These basins evolved in an environment characterised by elevated heat flow and transient episodes of magmatism and basin inversion in an inferred continental backarc setting. The ca 1600 – 1500 Ma Isan Orogeny probably records two phases of orogenesis. The first phase ( ca 1600 – 1570 Ma) involved approximately north – south to northwest – southeast shortening in which a northwest-vergent fold-thrust belt evolved in the Eastern Fold Belt and localised basin inversion occurred in the Western Fold Belt. The second phase ( ca 1550 – 1500) involved thick-skinned deformation in the Eastern and Western Fold Belts, characterised by upright folding, reverse faulting, and dextral wrenching. Voluminous granites were emplaced throughout the Eastern Fold Belt between ca 1550 and 1500 Ma. Exhumation and cooling of the crustal pile following the Isan Orogeny were related to crustal extension and widespread erosion in eastern and southern Australia. Subtle reactivation of faults within the inlier following the Isan Orogeny records the distal effects of Mesoproterozoic to Neoproterozoic breakup events and orogenesis in central Australia. A fundamental change from thin-skinned to thick-skinned tectonics in the Mt Isa Terrane is interpreted to reflect a westward shift in the locus of crustal thickening during Mesoproterozoic orogenesis in northeastern Australia. Geochronological constraints indicate that west-directed, thin-skinned deformation in the eastern part of the terrane occurred before ca 1540 Ma. This upper crustal system is interpreted to link with deeper crustal thickening in the Georgetown Inlier to the east, where synorogenic granites intruded at ca 1550 Ma. This early system was dissected by basement-cutting reverse faults across the entire Mt Isa Terrane after 1540 Ma. The nature of deeper crustal tectonics within the Mt Isa Terrane is determined by evaluating possible origins for the crustal structure revealed in a seismic-refraction profile. In particular, alignment of shallowly west-dipping, mid-crustal, high-velocity layers is interpreted to reflect tectonic duplication of underplated crust. Field mapping, structural analysis, and geochronologic data from northwestern Nepal reveal major normal right-slip motion along a previously unrecognized west-northwest striking system of shear zones that we term the Gurla Mandhata-Humla fault system (GMH). The GMH obliquely cuts across the Greater Himalayan Crystalline sequence and into the Lesser Himalayan imbricate thrust belt via two right-step-over structures. The average slip direction on the GMH parallels the strike of the Himalayan orogen. Motion along this fault system has resulted in an apparent left separation of the South Tibet Detachment, Main Central thrust zone, and Lesser Himalayan imbricate thrust belt along a north striking segment of the fault system. We estimate a minimum of 21 km of net slip on the southern branch of the GMH by restoring the trace of the Main Central thrust zone parallel to the average slip direction on the fault. Taking into account slip estimates from the northern branch of the GMH yields a minimum net slip estimate of 24.4 to 32.4 km for the GMH. The 232Th/208Pb ion microprobe monazite ages from leucogranite bodies indicate that motion on the GMH occurred after 15 Ma. Its initiation immediately followed crustal thickening between the Main Central thrust zone and Indus-Yalu suture zone. Motion on the GMH is contemporaneous with arc-normal contraction in the southernmost Himalayan orogen. These observations can be explained by a model that involves foreland propagating structural systems facilitating arc-normal contraction in the foreland and arc-parallel extension in the hinterland that work together to maintain the arcuate shape of the Himalayan orogen. The Balakot Formation of the Himalayan foreland basin in Pakistan was originally described as a >8 km thick clastic red bed succession within which are stratigraphically intercalated four gray marl bands containing fossils dated at 55-50 Ma. On this basis, and the reported conformable contact with the underlying Paleocene Patala Formation, the Balakot Formation red beds were interpreted as tidal facies dated at 55-50 Ma, by >20 Myr the oldest foreland basin sediments eroded from the metamorphic orogen. However, our new detailed structural mapping shows the Balakot Formation to be in tectonic contact with the underlying Patala Formation, and the marl bands to be structurally intercalated with the red beds. Hence neither the nature of the Balakot Formation lower contact nor the intercalated marl bands can be used to date the red beds. Our Ar/Ar dating of 257 individual detrital white micas from the Balakot Formation red bed sandstones shows that the red bed succession must be younger than 37 Ma, and we thus conclude that the first exposed foreland basin continental sediments eroded from the metamorphic mountain belt were deposited after 37 Ma, at least 15 Myr later than previously believed. These new structural, stratigraphic, and isotopic data from the Balakot Formation provide new constraints to the early tectonic evolution of the mountain belt, result in reassessment of the facies and provenance of the Balakot Formation, and force reconsideration of models of orogenesis, basin evolution, and the timing and diachroneity of India-Asia collision that are based on the original documentation of the Balakot Formation. A research on the Mesozoic fill-sequences of Hefei basin, located at the north foot of Dabie Mountains, shows two-phase evolution. The first phase, early- to mid-/late-Jurassic, is characterized by terrestrial clastic deposits, with four times of reverse-grading units at least, and forms greatly thick molass reconstruction in the mid-/late-phase, which reflects gradually strong thrusting-orogenesis in the north Dabie and flexural depression in the north foreland of Dabie Mountains. The second phase, late-Jurassic to Cretaceous, includes two-episode rifting processes. The first episode (J3) shows calc-alkalic and alkali volcanic rocks interstratified pyroclastic rocks, which may reflect upwelling igneous magma from mantle-source due to the Yangtze continent slab breakoff induced by deep subduction process. A suite of lacustrine, fluvial and piemount facies, about 3000 –3500 m in thickness, develops in the second episode (J3-K1), which reflects regional extensional setting and intense elevator diversity of mountain-basin in the study area. Hypersaline (Na–Ca–Cl) fluids are associated with late-stage quartz veining and retrogression of garnet, kyanite and other high P–T phases in the vicinity of thrusts and major lithological boundaries in the Scandian nappes of the Troms-Ofoten region, northern Norway. They record early Devonian fluid infiltration during rapid exhumation in the final stages of Caledonian orogenesis. The δ18O and δD characteristics of these late fluids provide compelling evidence for deep circulation of meteoric fluids. The sub-greenschist to low greenschist facies retrogression (P=2±1 kbar; T =300–350 °C) suggests infiltration to depths of 7–9 km in a regime of supra-hydrostatic fluid pressure. Peak metamorphic quartz veins and associated fluids have δD and δ18O characteristics consistent with a metamorphic origin (δD -47 to -75; δ18O+8.6 to +17.4). However, late quartz veins and associated fluids show a broad spread of δD from -42 to -148, interpreted in terms of meteoric fluid infiltration. Such negative δD values are only recorded in present-day high-latitude or high-altitude settings, and since north Norway was in an equatorial setting (10° S) in the early Devonian, a high-altitude origin is deduced. By calculation, and by comparison with modern examples, the early Devonian mountains of the north Norwegian Caledonides are interpreted to have had a topography in excess of 5 km. The deep circulation of surface waters is interpreted in terms of topographically driven flow, linked with a hydrothermal system induced by elevated geothermal gradients due to rapid uplift. Whilst the case for deep penetration of surface-derived fluids has been promoted for Mesozoic and younger mountain belts, this study represents one of the first documented examples for a Palaeozoic orogenic belt. Granitic plutons of the Wangetti and Mt Formartine Supersuites intrude the Hodgkinson Formation of the Macalister Range district of the eastern Hodgkinson Province, north Queensland, Australia. Field and microstructural analyses of country-rock fabrics and those of the granites show four deformational events (D1–D4) for the district, in common with other sectors of the Hodgkinson Province. Structural relationships show that plutons of the two supersuites were emplaced at different times. The Wangetti Granite lacks fabric development, but the deflection of country-rock cleavage trends around it and the microscale crenulation of S2 on the rims of D4 porphyroblasts within its aureole indicate syn-D4 emplacement, consistent with the Early Permian crystallisation age attributed to this pluton from isotopic evidence. Plutons of the Mt Formartine Supersuite show the effects of multiple (D2–D4) deformation. An emplacement age of 357 ± 6 Ma (latest Devonian) was obtained for this granite by SHRIMP U–Pb analyses of zircon. This identifies an early episode of plutonism for the Hodgkinson Province, most granites from which are of Permian age. The new date constrains the age of D2 for the Macalister Range district and the age of the protolith of the Hodgkinson Formation as pre-Carboniferous. It matches the age previously determined for one of several small, related granitic stocks in the southeastern Camel Creek Subprovince of the Broken River Province. Structural relationships for granites of this age suggest that their emplacement was broadly associated with the first episode of regional-scale orogenesis and the development of penetrative fabrics in the Hodgkinson – Broken River Fold Belt.
