We demonstrate the modulation of spin Seebeck effect (SSE) by hydrogenation in Pd/YIG bilayers. In the presence of 3% hydrogen gas, SSE voltage decreases by more than 50% from the magnitude observed in pure Ar gas. The modulation of the SSE voltage is reversible, but the recovery of the SSE voltage to the prehydrogenation value takes a few days because of a long time constant of hydrogen desorption. We also demonstrate that the spin Hall magnetoresistance of the identical sample reduces significantly with hydrogen exposure, supporting that the observed modulation of spin current signals originates from hydrogenation of Pd/YIG. Background: Proper management of adverse events is crucial for the safe and effective implementation of anticancer drug treatment. Showa University Hospital uses our interview sheet (assessment and risk control [ARC] sheet) for the accurate evaluation of adverse events. On the day of anticancer drug treatment, a nurse conducts a face-to-face interview. As a feature of the ARC sheet, by separately describing the symptoms the day before treatment and the day of treatment and sharing the information on the medical record, it is possible to clearly determine the status of adverse events. In this study, we hypothesized that the usefulness and points for improvement of the ARC sheet would be clarified by using and evaluating a patient questionnaire. Methods: This study included 174 patients (144 at Showa University Hospital (Hatanodai Hospital) and 30 at Showa University Koto Toyosu Hospital (Toyosu Hospital) who underwent pre-examination interviews by nurses and received cancer chemotherapy at the outpatient center of Hatanodai and Toyosu Hospital. In the questionnaire survey, the ARC sheet's content and quality, respondents' satisfaction, structural strengths, and points for improvement were evaluated on a five-point scale. Results: The patient questionnaire received responses from 160 participants, including the ARC sheet use group (132 people) and the non-use group (28 people). Unlike the ARC sheet non-use group, the ARC sheet use group recognized that the sheet was useful to understand the adverse events of aphthous ulcers (p = 0.017) and dysgeusia (p = 0.006). In the satisfaction survey questionnaire, there was a high sense of security in the pre-examination interviews by nurses using the ARC sheet. Conclusions: The ARC sheet is considered an effective tool for comprehensively evaluating adverse events. Pre-examination interviews by nurses using ARC sheets accurately determined the adverse events experienced by patients with anxiety and tension due to confrontation with physicians. We study the momentum correlation functions of p Ξ - and Λ Λ pairs produced in high-energy nuclear collisions by using the coupled-channel framework and the N Ξ - Λ Λ coupled-channel baryon-baryon potentials recently obtained from lattice QCD calculations at almost physical quark masses. The calculated results are found to well describe the correlation function data from pp and pPb collisions. This agreement confirms the S = - 2 baryon-baryon potentials from lattice QCD and supports the existence of the H dibaryon as a virtual state around the N Ξ threshold. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Oecophylla smaragdina is distributed from India, SE Asia and Australia including many tropical Islands. A recent phylogenetic study based on mitochondrial DNA analysis reveals that Bangladesh is the overlapping zone of both Indian and Southeast Asian type of O. smaragdina. These two different lineages of Indian and SE Asian type have the opportunities of creating the zone of contacts, but no such data was found. In this study, shed light was given to reveal the chance of hybridized colony of O. smaragdina in Bangladesh. Methods: To asses the hybridization scenario, 28 O. smaragdina colony from 27 localities in Bangladesh were analyzed using Longwave length Rhodopsin (LWRh) nuclear gene sequences and was compared with the mtDNA sequences, which was collected from the same localities and deposited into NCBI GenBank. Result: The inconsistency between mitochondrial and nuclear gene types was observed from two colonies of the overlapped zone of contact. These two colonies were identified as SE Asian type by mtDNA analysis however, by nuclear DNA analysis; it was identified as Indian type. These significant discrepancies within the colony suggested the possibility of hybridization of weaver ant in Bangladesh. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Faults, fracture systems, weathering profiles and cover sediments of granitic basement in the rift shoulder of the Gulf of Suez Rift (Sinai, Egypt) are useful conceptual analogues for basement-cover reservoir fields. Outcrops demonstrate that fracture intensity peaks adjacent to major faults, and declines in damage zones that stretch to the background fracturing level over distances of 150 m. In the rift shoulder, smaller faults have damage zones that are 30 - 40 m wide with 1 - 5 m-wide fracture corridors. Faults show chemical alteration extending hundreds of metres into basement, with characteristics similar to saprolite in schists, mafic rocks and granitoids. Cover sandstones fill and drape top-basement relief, as recorded by metre-thick basal fluvial coarse sandstones, hosting kaolinite both as diagenetic pore fill and clastic grains. Overlying floodplain to marginal-marine deposits consist of mature quartz arenites. Strategies for production of hydrocarbons or groundwater from basement-cover reservoir couplets should consider a layered system with: (i) deep tight basement of minimal porosity (c. 1%) hosting producible fractures and faults in a plumbed system with potential thief zones; (ii) top-basement weathering profiles capping granitoids representing a volumetrically considerable reservoir; and (iii) draping cover sandstones showing good reservoir properties, and representing the most homogenous unit. Messinian evaporates are widely distributed in the Mediterranean Sea as outcropping sediments in small marginal basins and in marine cores. Progressive filling of subbasins led to the formation of complex aquifer systems in different regions where hypersaline and fresh water coexist and interact in different manner. It also generates a significant diversification of groundwater hydrochemical signature and different microbial communities. In the case study, the hydrogeology and hydrochemistry of the whole system are influenced by good hydraulic connection between the shallower pyroclastic horizon and the underlying evaporate-bearing fine-grained Messinian succession. This is demonstrated by the merge of hydrogeological, chemical, isotopic, and microbiological data. No mixing with deep ascending waters has been observed. As shown by geophysical, hydraulic, and microbiological investigations, the hydraulic heterogeneity of the Messinian bedrock, mainly due to karstified evaporitic interstrata/lenses, causes the hydraulic head to significantly vary with depth. Somewhere, the head increases with the depth’s increase and artesian flow conditions are locally observed. Moreover, the metagenomic investigations demonstrated the existence of a poor hydraulic connection within the evaporate-bearing fine-grained succession at metric and decametric scales, therefore leading to a patchwork of geochemical (and microbiological) subenvironments. Nano-structured silicon is an attractive alternative anode material to conventional graphite in lithium-ion batteries. However, the anode designs with higher silicon concentrations remain to be commercialized despite recent remarkable progress. One of the most critical issues is the fundamental understanding of the lithium-silicon Coulombic efficiency. Particularly, this is the key to resolve subtle yet accumulatively significant alterations of Coulombic efficiency by various paths of lithium-silicon processes over cycles. Here, we provide quantitative and qualitative insight into how the irreversible behaviors are altered by the processes under amorphous volume changes and hysteretic amorphous-crystalline phase transformations. Repeated latter transformations over cycles, typically featured as a degradation factor, can govern the reversibility behaviors, improving the irreversibility and eventually minimizing cumulative irreversible lithium consumption. This is clearly different from repeated amorphous volume changes with different lithiation depths. The mechanism behind the correlations is elucidated by electrochemical and structural probing. Background: Cancer chemotherapy is associated with a variety of side effects/adverse events. It is very important that patients adhere to the planned chemotherapy regimen, which necessitates a minimum of side effects and that these side effects be kept under control. We have investigated patients' concerns and symptoms during chemotherapy with the aim to seek solutions that will improve patients' quality of life during chemotherapy. Methods: Forty-nine patients with malignant diseases on parenteral antineoplastic agents were sequentially enrolled in this study. These patients completed a questionnaire consisting of 42 items related to non-physical concerns and 52 items of physical symptoms related to chemotherapy. Each patient was also asked to select the three items among these 94 items which affected him/her the most. Results: The median age of the cancer patients was 62 years and the male-to-female ratio was 18:31. Among the non-physical concerns, the most frequently chosen concern was 'affects my family or partner,' followed by anxiety related to treatment. Regarding the physical symptoms, the most frequent complaints were fatigue, alopecia and constipation, while the most troublesome symptoms were nausea, poor taste and paresthesia. Overall, the most frequently expressed concerns were 'affects my family or partner' and anxiety related to treatment. Male patients suffered most from fever, fatigue and nausea, and female patients complained more of poor taste and gastrointestinal problems. Conclusion: Patient perceptions of adverse events associated with cancer chemotherapy apparently have changed from physical symptoms to non-physical concerns. In our patient cohort 'affects my family or partner' was the most important concern. Here we report, for the first time, the occurrence of a Crematogaster species with 10-segmented antennae in the Indochina region. Specifically, the new species, Crematogaster indosinensis sp. nov., exhibits size polymorphism in the worker caste and was collected in Cambodia. However, it is not currently known whether C. indosinensis has an association with ant-plants. The interspecific cytochrome c oxidase subunit I divergence for C. indosinensis versus C. borneensis was 20%, suggesting that the taxa diverged relatively long ago. Molecular phylogenetic analysis using nuclear genes revealed that C. indosinensis is sister to the remainders of the C. borneensis-group. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

About 15% of couples wishing to have children are infertile; approximately half these cases involve a male factor. Polo-like kinase 4 ( PLK-4) is a member of the polo protein family and a key regulator of centriole duplication. Male mice with a point mutation in the Plk4 gene show azoospermia associated with germ cell loss. Mutational analysis of 81 patients with azoospermia and Sertoli cell-only syndrome ( SCOS) identified one man with a heterozygous 13-bp deletion in the Ser/Thr kinase domain of PLK4. Division of centrioles occurred in wild-type PLK4-transfected cells, but was hampered in PLK-4-mutant transfectants, which also showed abnormal nuclei. Streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS) is a severe invasive infection characterized by the sudden onset of shock, multi-organ failure, and high mortality. In Japan, appropriate notification measures based on the Infectious Disease Control law are mandatory for cases of STSS caused by β-haemolytic streptococcus. STSS is mainly caused by group A streptococcus (GAS). Although an average of 60-70 cases of GAS-induced STSS are reported annually, 143 cases were recorded in 2011. To determine the reason behind this marked increase, we characterized the emm genotype of 249 GAS isolates from STSS patients in Japan from 2010 to 2012 and performed antimicrobial susceptibility testing. The predominant genotype was found to be emm1, followed by emm89, emm12, emm28, emm3, and emm90. These six genotypes constituted more than 90% of the STSS isolates. The number of emm1, emm89, emm12, and emm28 isolates increased concomitantly with the increase in the total number of STSS cases. In particular, the number of mefA-positive emm1 isolates has escalated since 2011. Thus, the increase in the incidence of STSS can be attributed to an increase in the number of cases associated with specific genotypes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
