We have investigated the role of the m/n = 2/1 neoclassical tearing mode (NTM) for suppression of the sawtooth collapse in JT-60U from the viewpoint of the anomalous transport of the current diffusion, namely flux pumping. In the stabilization experiments of m/n = 2/1 NTMs by electron cyclotron current drive of JT-60U, it has been clarified that the sawtooth collapses occur during or after the stabilization of m/n = 2/1 NTMs. It is also confirmed that the minimum safety factor, qmin, is nearly unity before and after the stabilization of an m/n = 2/1 NTM. While the flux pumping by ELM-NTM coupling was reported in DIII-D, the suppression of the sawtooth collapse is observed without ELMs in this study. On the other hand, it is observed that the sawtooth precursor appears during the stabilization of the m/n = 2/1 NTM accompanying the disappearance of the fluctuation of the n = 1 helical core (HC), which is induced by the m/n = 2/1 NTM. In addition, the modulation of the toroidal rotation velocity having the frequency of the n = 1 HC is observed in the core region. Because the helical flow with HCs is a possible source of the dynamo loop voltage in tokamaks, these observations suggest that the suppression of the sawtooth collapse in JT-60U is realized by the dynamo loop voltage due to the n = 1 HC induced by the m/n = 2/1 NTM. The first EMC3‐EIRENE modelling for the JT‐60SA edge plasmas with/without the resonant magnetic perturbation field (RMP) was conducted. Both core degradation in the vacuum approximation and strike‐point splitting were observed due to the application of the RMP, as in previous studies in other devices. Toroidally averaged divertor heat fluxes with and without the RMP were fitted by using a one‐dimensional diffusive model function, showing similar profiles. To extract the modulation components of the divertor heat flux profile, the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method was applied. By using the POD outputs, a modulation ratio with respect to the toroidally averaged profile was quantitatively calculated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND:Selecting appropriate candidates for postprostatectomy radiotherapy is challenging, because adverse pathological features cannot accurately predict clinical recurrence. Biomarkers that identify residual disease activity may assist clinicians when counseling patients on the risks, benefits and costs of secondary treatment. NADiA ProsVue PSA slope results ⩽2.0 pg ml−1 month−1 are predictive of a reduced risk of clinical recurrence; however, its clinical utility has not yet been studied.METHODS:We prospectively enrolled men treated by radical prostatectomy in a multicenter, institutional review board-approved clinical trial. At postsurgical follow-up, investigators (N=17) stratified men into low-, intermediate- or high-risk groups for prostate cancer recurrence based on clinicopathological findings and other factors. Investigators documented their initial treatment plan for each subject and serially collected three serum samples for ProsVue testing. After the ProsVue result was reported, investigators recorded whether or not the initial treatment plan was changed. The proportion of cases referred for secondary treatment before and after ProsVue was reported, and the significance of the difference determined.RESULTS:Complete assessments were reported for 225 men, 128 (56.9%) of whom were stratified into intermediate- and high-risk groups. Investigators reported that they would have referred 41/128 (32.0%) at-risk men for secondary treatment. However, after results were known, they referred only 15/128 (11.7%) men. The difference in proportions (−20.3%, 95% confidence interval (CI) −29.9 to −10.3%) is significant (P<0.0001). Odds of a referral was significantly reduced after results were reported (odds ratio 0.28, 95% CI 0.15-0.54, P<0.0001).CONCLUSIONS:Knowledge of a ProsVue result had significant impact on the final treatment plan. Spatio-temporal measurements of the impurity ion temperature, density, and rotation profiles around the plasma edge region have been made in the JT-60U tokamak, allowing the determination of radial electric field, E r, with the key dimensionless parameter (poloidal Mach number, U pm) at the L-H transition in a number of operational regimes. We found that there is variation in the L-H transition in terms of its time-scale; not only 'hard' type transition with a faster time-scale than that seen in the plasma transport (as represented by an energy confinement time, τ E) as seen in the many conventional tokamaks, but also 'soft' one with a slow time-scale (≈ τ E) is possible solution, including a complex multi-stage E r transition in the later H-phase. The most important point is that the critical condition for the L-H transition predicted by ion-orbit loss model could be applicable only for 'hard' transition (occurred at U pm ≥ 1), and not necessary for 'slow' one (occurred even at U pm < 1). Characteristics of the turbulent density fluctuation with the frequency range of 100 kHz at the plasma edge region, in addition to a uniform toroidal MHD oscillation (i.e., n = 0), during ELM-free H-phase are also reported. In the wall-stabilized high-β plasmas in JT-60U and DIII-D, interactions between energetic particle (EP) driven modes (EPdMs) and edge localized modes (ELMs) have been observed. The interaction between the EPdM and ELM are reproducibly observed. Many EP diagnostics indicate a strong correlation between the distorted waveform of the EPdM and the EP transport to the edge. The waveform distortion is composed of higher harmonics (n ⩾ 2) and looks like a density snake near the plasma edge. According to statistical analyses, ELM triggering by the EPdMs requires a finite level of waveform distortion and pedestal recovery. ELM pacing by the EPdMs occurs when the repetition frequency of the EPdMs is higher than the natural ELM frequency. EPs transported by EPdMs are thought to contribute to change the edge stability. In tokamak plasmas, the confinement of energetic ions depends on the magnetic field structure. If the plasma pressure is finite, the equilibrium current (i.e., the Pfirsch-Schlüter current and diamagnetic current) flows in the plasma to maintain the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equilibrium. These plasma currents generate poloidal and toroidal magnetic field and alter the field structure. Moreover, if we consider the non-axisymmetry of magnetic field structures such as toroidal field (TF) ripples, the non-axisymmetric component of the equilibrium current can alter TF ripples themselves. When the plasma beta becomes high, the changes in the field structure due to the equilibrium current might affect the confinement of energetic ions significantly. We intend to clarify how these currents alter the field structure and affect the confinement of alpha particles in high-beta plasma. The MHD equilibrium is calculated using VMEC and the orbits of fusion alpha particles are followed by using the fully three-dimensional magnetic field orbit-following Monte Carlo code. In relatively low-beta plasma (e.g., the volume-averaged beta value <β>≤2%), the changes in the magnetic field component due to the plasma current negligibly affect the confinement of alpha particles except for the Shafranov shift effect. However, for <β>≥3%, the diamagnetic effect reduces the magnetic field strength and significantly increases alpha-particle losses. In these high-beta cases, the non-axisymmetric field component generated by the equilibrium current also increases these losses, but not as effectively as compared to the diamagnetic effect. In the JT-60U high-j plasmas above the no-wall j limit, a triggering of an edge localized mode (ELM) by an energetic particle (EP)-driven mode has been observed. This EP-driven mode is thought to be driven by trapped EPs and it has been named EP-driven wall mode (EWM) on JT-60U (Matsunaga et al 2009 Phys. Rev. Lett. 103 045001). When the EWM appears in an ELMy H-mode phase, ELM crashes are reproducibly synchronized with the EWM bursts. The EWM-triggered ELM has a higher repetition frequency and less energy loss than those of the natural ELM. In order to trigger an ELM by the EP-driven mode, some conditions are thought to be needed, thus an EWM with large amplitude and growth rate, and marginal edge stability. In the scrape-off layer region, several measurements indicate an ion loss induced by the EWM. The ion transport is considered as the EP transport through the edge region. The kinetic effect of trapped energetic particles (EPs), arising from perpendicular neutral beam injection, on the stable low-n peeling modes in tokamak plasmas is investigated, through numerical solution of the mode's dispersion relation derived from an energy principle. A resistive-wall peeling mode with m/n=6/1, with m and n being the poloidal and toroidal mode numbers, respectively, is destabilized by trapped EPs as the EPs' pressure exceeds a critical value βc*, which is sensitive to the pitch angle of trapped EPs. The dependence of βc* on the particle pitch angle is eventually determined by the bounce average of the mode eigenfunction. Peeling modes with higher m and n numbers can also be destabilized by trapped EPs. Depending on the wall distance, either a resistive-wall peeling mode or an ideal-kink peeling mode can be destabilized by EPs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The efficiency of energetic ion confinement is reduced by ripple fields, which are mainly generated by the finite number of toroidal field coils in a tokamak reactor. Finite beta effects alter magnetic field structures and energetic ion orbits. Finite beta effects on magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equilibria have been thoroughly researched. However, it is not known how finite beta effects affect energetic ion losses. To investigate this, the MHD equilibrium was calculated using the VMEC code. Finite beta effects on the ripple ratio were accurately investigated and it was found that the non-axisymmetric poloidal field generated by the plasma current could not be ignored. The guiding centre orbit equation was solved to clarify physical considerations of finite beta effects on the energetic ion losses. The energetic ion orbits were found to be strongly affected by the diamagnetic effect. By performing calculations for energetic ions with the same initial position, it was found that the diamagnetic effect produced two opposing effects: it reduced particle loss due to the closed |B| contour and it increased particle loss due to the high curvature of the |B| contour. An energetic-particle (EP)-driven 'off-axis-fishbone-like mode (OFM)' often triggers a resistive wall mode (RWM) in JT-60U and DIII-D devices, preventing long-duration high-βN discharges. In these experiments, the EPs are energetic ions (70-85 keV) injected by neutral beams to produce high-pressure plasmas. EP-driven bursting events reduce the EP density and the plasma rotation simultaneously. These changes are significant in high-βN low-rotation plasmas, where the RWM stability is predicted to be strongly influenced by the EP precession drift resonance and by the plasma rotation near the q=2 surface (kinetic effects). Analysis of these effects on stability with a self-consistent perturbation to the mode structure using the MARS-K code showed that the impact of EP losses and rotation drop is sufficient to destabilize the RWM in low-rotation plasmas, when the plasma rotation normalized by Alfvén frequency is only a few tenths of a percent near the q=2 surface. The OFM characteristics are very similar in JT-60U and DIII-D, including nonlinear mode evolution. The modes grow initially like a classical fishbone, and then the mode structure becomes strongly distorted. The dynamic response of the OFM to an applied n=1 external field indicates that the mode retains its external kink character. These comparative studies suggest that an energetic particle-driven 'off-axis-fishbone-like mode' is a new EP-driven branch of the external kink mode in wall-stabilized plasmas, analogous to the relationship of the classical fishbone branch to the internal kink mode. Stable toroidicity-induced Alfvén eigenmodes (TAEs) with low toroidal mode number (n=1 and n=2) were excited by application of alternating magnetic field perturbations generated with a set of electrodes inserted into the edge region of neutral beam injection heated plasmas on the Compact Helical System [K. Nishimura, K. Matsuoka, M. Fujiwara et al., Fusion Technol. 17, 86 (1990)]. The gap locations of TAEs excited by the electrodes are in the plasma peripheral region of ρ>0.7 (ρ is the normalized minor radius) where energetic ion drive is negligibly small, while some AEs are excited by energetic ions in the plasma core region of ρ<0.4. The damping rate of these stable TAEs derived from plasma responses to applied perturbations is fairly large, that is, ∼9% to ∼12% of the angular eigenfrequency. Motional Stark effect (MSE) diagnostics in JT-60U works as polarimeter to measure the pitch angle of magnetic field as well as beam-emission-spectroscopy (BES) monochromator simultaneously at 30 spatial channels. Fluctuation in the BES signal using MSE optics (MSE/BES) contains fluctuations in not only the density but also the pitch angle (or the magnetic field). Correlation analysis of the magnetic fluctuation between two spatial channels is applied to high-beta plasma with a magnetohydrodynamic activity at frequency of about 0.9 kHz. It has been found that the magnetic fluctuation measured by the MSE/BES is spatially localized near the magnetic flux surface having safety factor and that the phase of the fluctuation is inverted at about the surface, suggesting magnetic island structure by tearing mode. The phase of the magnetic fluctuation measured by the MSE/BES at outside of the q=2 surface is consistent with that by the pickup coil placed outside the plasma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new technique to measure the first and second derivatives of the ion temperature profile has been developed by using a charge exchange spectroscopy system with space modulation optics. The space observed is scanned up to ±3 cm with a cosine wave modulation frequency up to 30 Hz by shifting the object lens in front of the optical fiber bundle by 0.5 mm with a piezoelement. The multichannel motional Stark effect (MSE) diagnostic system in JT-60U has been upgraded to measure density fluctuation profile. A 16-channel fast-sampling digitizer has been added in order to measure photomultiplier-tube signals at measurement frequency of 0.5–1 MHz. The new system works as a MSE and beam emission spectroscopy diagnostic. Spatially resolved electron density fluctuation profile measurement in various operation regimes is presented. In the core plasma, density fluctuation induced by rotation of tearing mode islands was observed. Temporal evolution of the fluctuation frequency agrees with that measured by Mirnov coils (poloidal and toroidal mode numbers: 2 and 1, respectively). The phases of the fluctuations on either side of the q=2 surface are inverted, which is consistent with electron cyclotron emission. These measurements show that the density fluctuation is caused by a rotating magnetic island structure induced by the tearing mode. In the scrape-off layer of a H-mode plasma with edge-localized-mode (ELM), i. e., ELMy H-mode outward propagation of strong intermittent emission corresponding to ELM crash was also observed. The propagation velocity is 0.69–2.2 km/s along the MSE measurement points, the time lag and distance between adjacent channels being 67±35 μs and 70 mm, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Four loop antennas are installed in the Compact Helical System (CHS) heliotron/torsatron in order to externally excite Alfve´n eigenmodes (AEs). These antennas are used in two different operation methods: one is as a set of four external loop antennas, and the other two pairs of electrodes inserted near the plasma boundary. For these two operations, magnetic perturbations in the frequency range of 10–250 kHz are generated in the plasma. The plasma response for the applied magnetic perturbations is measured by magnetic probe arrays. Information of AEs can be derived from the analysis of the response. In the excitation experiment of AEs using the “electrode method,” magnetic fluctuations are resonantly enhanced in a certain electron density during the afterglow of a neutral beam heated plasma, where no energetic ions exist. The fluctuations have the toroidal mode number n=1 and the frequency lies just above the lower bound of the toroidicity-induced Alfve´n eigenmode (TAE) gap in the plasma core region. A system for Alfve´n-eigenmode spectroscopy in the compact helical system heliotron/torsatron is presented. In this system, four electrodes inserted near the last closed flux surface are employed as the exciter of Alfve´n eigenmodes (AEs). A set of magnetic probes is employed as the detectors of excited magnetic fluctuations. An alternating current path along the confinement magnetic field line is generated in the plasma edge between two electrodes which intersect with a specified magnetic field line. Another two electrodes also produce another current path. The polarity between these two current paths is adjusted to specify the toroidal mode number of the excited field perturbations. The frequency of the alternating current is in the range of 10–250 kHz. The possibility of the excitation of AEs by this system is discussed. © 2001 American Institute of Physics. The plasma current decay during the initial phase of the current quench in JT-60U disruption has been calculated by a disruption simulation code (DINA) using the measured electron temperature Te profile. In the case of fast plasma current decay, Te has a peaked profile immediately after a thermal quench and the Te profile does not change significantly during the initial phase of the current quench. On the other hand, in the case of a slow plasma current decay, the Te profile is broader immediately after the thermal quench, and the Te profile shrinks. The results of the DINA simulation show that the plasma internal inductance Li increases during the initial phase of the current quench, whereas the plasma external inductance Le does not change over time. If the plasma is represented by a simple electrical circuit, the time derivative of Li functions as a resistance on the plasma current decay. It was confirmed that the increase in Li is caused by current diffusion toward the core plasma due to the decrease in Te in the intermediate and edge regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Penetration processes of rotating helical magnetic perturbation field into tokamak plasmas have been investigated by the dynamic ergodic divertor (DED) in TEXTOR. Experimental observations of the field penetration and field amplification are performed and the data are interpreted by theoretical analyses based on a linearized two-fluid plasma model. It is observed that the growth of the forced magnetic reconnection by the rotating DED-field is accompanied by a change in the plasma fluid rotation. The theoretical model is also applied to the DED experiment in the small tokamak device HYBTOK-II. It is confirmed that the theoretical analyses can explain the observed radial profiles of the DED-field in the plasma by inserting small magnetic pick-up coils in HYBTOK-II. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In neutral-beam-injection (NBI) heated plasmas of the Compact Helical System (CHS) heliotron/torsatron [K. Matsuoka et al., Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research, 1988 (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1989), Vol. 2, p. 441], inward turbulent particle flux is observed at a particular radial location near the plasma edge. The observed reversal of the particle flux is connected to the change in the cross-phase between electron density and poloidal electric field fluctuations. This phenomenon is observed in the parameter regime of low collisionality at the electron temperature T[sub e]>15 eV, electron density n[sub e]<3×10[sup 18] m[sup -3], which approximately corresponds to the effective collision frequency normalized by the transit frequency of a circulating particle ν*≤1. The large inward particle flux (>=1×10[sup 20] m[sup -2] s[sup -1]) correlates with the positive shear of the radial electric field E[sub r][sup ′] (>=1×10[sup 6] V m[sup -2]), but does not have clear correlation with the radial electric field E[sub r] and the curvature E[sub r][sup ″]. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
