Periosteal new bone formation (PNBF) is a common finding in a large spectrum of diseases. In clinical practice, the morphology and location of periosteal lesions are frequently used to assist in the differential diagnosis of distinct bone conditions. Less commonly reported is the presence of PNBF on the ribs. This contrasts with the data retrieved from the study of skeletonized human remains that shows a high frequency of cases and a strong, albeit not specific, association between periosteal rib lesions and pulmonary conditions (e.g. tuberculosis). Despite that, an overall disagreement regarding the specificity and non‐specificity of periosteal reactions exists in the study of dry bone remains. The insufficient number of clinical models exploring the morphology and the pathophysiology of PNBF's and the lack of systematic studies of pathological samples with a known diagnosis are claimed as major reasons for the disagreements. This study aimed to describe and compare the macroscopic and the histomorphologic appearance of periosteal rib lesions and to discuss their usefulness as diagnostic indicators. To pursue this goal, an assemblage of 13 rib samples (males = 11, females = 2, mean age‐at‐death = 36.6 years old) was collected from the Luis Lopes Skeletal Collection (Museu Nacional de História Natural e da Ciência, Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal). The assemblage belongs to individuals who died from pulmonary‐TB (group 1), non‐TB pulmonary infections (group 2) and other conditions (group 3). Prior to sample preparation, the ribs were visually inspected and the PNBF described according to its thickness, the degree of cortical integration and the type of new bone formed (e.g. woven, lamellar or both). After sampling, each bone sample was prepared for histological analysis under plane and polarized light microscopy. Macroscopically, the results showed no differences in the new bone composition between cause‐of‐death groups. Only slight differences in the degree of cortical integration, which was most frequently classified as mild to high in the pulmonary‐TB group, were observed. Histologically, no distinguishing features were identified by pathological group. However, new bone microarchitectures were observed compatible with (1) acute, fast‐growing processes (e.g. spiculated reactions), (2) long‐standing processes with a rapid bone formation (e.g. appositional layering of bone) and/or (3) chronic, slow‐growing processes (e.g. layers of compact lamellae). To some extent, these distinct rates of disease progression resonate with the cause‐of‐death listed for some individuals. Despite the small sample size, the results of this investigation are in agreement with previous studies, according to which the macroscopic and histological appearance of periosteal formations are not specific for a particular pathological conditions. Nevertheless, the results support the conclusion that the morphology of periosteal lesions is a good biological indicator for inferring the rate of progression and duration of pathological processes. This study provides important reference data regarding the histomorphology of periosteal lesions that can be used for comparative purposes, as well as to narrow down the differential diagnosis in unidentified skeletal remains. Friction stir welding (FSW) was developed as an alternative to conventional welding techniques. This technique eliminates the melting of materials, thus reducing the defects that would arise from conventional welding. The present work aims to evaluate the effect of welding parameters by varying the welding speed (ν) and the tool rotation (ω) using a threaded tool. The present work aims to evaluate the effect of welding parameters by varying the welding speed (ν) from 100 to 300 mm/min and the tool rotation (ω) from 600 to 1500 RPM using a threaded tool in Al–Mg plates 5052-H34 resulting in 72 specimens. The torque and forces were analyzed and the results were compared with the results obtained with a threadless welding tool. The quality of the weld was correlated with the welding parameters used by means of hardness tests and tomography. It was concluded that the threaded tool generates tunnel defects and demands greater energy from the process in relation to torque and axial force, when compared to the tool without thread, result in a variation of 44.15% higher values in torque, 29.10% maximum axial force, and 47.10% welding force. The behavior of the forces involved in the process, however, was the same for both tool geometries. The hardness along the neutral axis of the welded specimens showed the expected behavior, making clear the change between the stirring zone, the heat-affected zone, and the base metal. This article makes a case for the importance of exploring patterns in the relationship between the adoption of lean manufacturing practices and business performance. This relationship has been described as ambiguous, because it has variously appeared to be positive, insignificant, and negative. Accordingly, this article tests this relationship for non-linearity and shows that it follows the S-Curve theory. A survey of manufacturing companies in an industrial cluster in Brazil was undertaken. This region faces infrastructural challenges, such as geographic distance between purchasers and suppliers and a shortage of skilled Labour. Despite the conditions, these companies have significantly improved their operational, financial, and environmental performance through the adoption of lean practices. Thus, this article contributes to the literature on lean manufacturing by: (a) furthering the debate on the relationship between lean practices and business performance, and testing its adherence to the S-curve theory by means of survey research; and (b) simultaneously testing operational, financial and environmental performance as a result of the adoption of lean manufacturing practices. As a consequence of the S-shaped relationship demonstrated, managers need to be aware of the presence of inertial and saturation points in the adoption of lean manufacturing practices, so they can correctly allocate resources for improving the adoption of lean practices. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explore the adoption of lean practices by manufacturing companies in regions of low economic and technological development and to compare findings with previous studies from more developed regions highlighting important contextual differences. The paper uses the contingency theory to explore how contextual variables and scarce resources influence the adoption of lean practices. Design/methodology/approach: A survey of 233 manufacturing firms was conducted in the State of Pará in the Amazon Region of Brazil. Findings: The results demonstrate that six internal lean practices (single minute exchange of dies, human resource management, continuous flow, total productive maintenance, pull and statistical process control) and two external lean practices (supplier feedback and customer involvement) are implemented. However, the two external lean practices of just-in-time delivery by suppliers and supplier development were not implemented. Furthermore, from the 36 operating items comprised in eight lean practices that are being used, 13 were not implemented. As such, compared to developed regions, there is evidence for a more fragmented implementation in less developed regions. The results reveal empirical evidence explained by the contingency perspective, such as national, geographical, strategic context and culture. Originality/value: There is broad evidence on lean implementation in developed and developing countries in the literature. However, little is known about lean implementation in poorer regions of developing counties. This is one of the first studies mapping lean implementation in a region with low economic and technological development. Since investigation of the timing of the skeletal traits among the acetabula of different populations is lacking, this study aims to evaluate the relevance of geographical origin in the acetabulum aging process and in the usability of the SanMillán-Rissech aging method. The acetabula of 826 European North Americans derived from the Bass Collection (USA) have been analyzed and compared with 611 Portuguese acetabula from the Luis Lopes Collection (Portugal) applying the most updated acetabular age estimation technique (2017). After evaluating and comparing the acetabular aging rates between both populations by Mann–Whitney U tests, the inaccuracy values (bias and absolute error) were analyzed and compared using population-specific reference samples and using references differing in geographical origin by Wilcoxon tests. In general terms, the North Americans age faster than the Portuguese, especially the females, reaching the consecutive acetabular stages at younger ages. Regarding the SanMillán-Rissech method accuracy, using population-specific reference samples produces, as a general rule, better outcomes. In addition, an exhaustive meta-analysis of inaccuracy values has demonstrated that this method provides better estimation values than pubic symphysis and auricular surfaces regardless of the geographic coherence of the reference sample. These inter-population skeletal differences are derived from different factors than age, highlighting the impact of both biological and social background on age estimation. A thorough analysis of the skeletal age-based timing becomes essential to understanding, deciphering and being able to minimize bias and potential inaccuracy or even counteract them when applying the age estimation methods to different populations. This paper introduces a literature review of 83 studies dealing with the degree of adoption of lean manufacturing practices around the world, and the links between those practices and organisation performance. The results of this study revealed that lean practices application still occurs in a fragmented way, disregarding the systemic linkage that is essential to lean manufacturing. Forty-one articles have suggested a positive effect of lean practices in at least one operational, financial and/or environmental performance metric. Nevertheless, five studies indicated that some lean practices had a negative effect on operational or financial performance. High demand variability, a perceived result of long-term lean manufacturing implementation, a country/company’s organisational culture and the difficulty of traditional costing production systems to measure and compare investments and economic gains from adopting lean manufacturing over time are some of the reasons to explain that negative effect of lean practice on performance. A procedure is proposed to accurately model thin wires in lossy media by finite element analysis. It is based on the determination of a suitable element width in the vicinity of the wire, which strongly depends on the wire radius to yield accurate results. The approach is well adapted to the analysis of grounding systems. The numerical results of the application of finite element analysis with the suitably chosen element width are compared with both analytical results and those computed by a commercial package for the analysis of grounding systems, showing very good agreement. A new approach is proposed in this work for the treatment of boundary value problems through the Adomian's decomposition method. Although frequently claimed as accurate and having fast convergence rates, the original formulation of Adomian's method does not allow the treatment of homogeneous boundary conditions along closed boundaries. The technique here presented overcomes this difficulty, and is applied to the analysis of magnetohydrodynamic duct flows. Results are in good agreement with finite element method calculations and analytical solutions for square ducts. Subadult age estimation should rely on sampling and statistical protocols capturing development variability for more accurate age estimates. In this perspective, measurements were taken on the fifth lumbar vertebrae and/or clavicles of 534 French males and females aged 0–19 years and the ilia of 244 males and females aged 0–12 years. These variables were fitted in nonparametric multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) models with 95% prediction intervals (PIs) of age. The models were tested on two independent samples from Marseille and the Luis Lopes reference collection from Lisbon. Models using ilium width and module, maximum clavicle length, and lateral vertebral body heights were more than 92% accurate. Precision was lower for postpubertal individuals. Integrating punctual nonlinearities of the relationship between age and the variables and dynamic prediction intervals incorporated the normal increase in interindividual growth variability (heteroscedasticity of variance) with age for more biologically accurate predictions. Objectives: In studies of growth in the past, low percentage of cortical area (%CA) is commonly attributed to poor general health, due to factors including poor nutrition, low socioeconomic status, or other physiological stressors. What constitutes low relative cortical dimensions has not been established across a diverse range of human skeletal samples. This study examines %CA in a large immature skeletal sample to establish typical variation in humans with consideration of both body mass and subsistence strategy. Materials and Methods: Percentage of cortical area was calculated at the midshaft of the humerus, femur, and tibia in seven skeletal samples. Age at death was estimated from dental development, and body mass from bone dimensions. Patterns of %CA with age and log‐transformed body mass were examined in the pooled sample and compared among samples using LOESS regression, Welch's ANOVA, and Kruskal‐Wallis tests. Results: Across all samples, %CA displays a generally non‐linear pattern, but variation in %CA with age was high, particularly in samples with lower levels of %CA. There was no relationship between %CA and age‐adjusted body mass. Discussion: The lack of a relationship between %CA and body mass suggests that %CA should not be used as an indicator of mechanical loading. The variation present across samples implies that appositional bone growth is affected by physiological stress in varying ways. Without a deeper understanding of what is "typical" for long bone development, it is impossible to draw conclusions about individual or population level health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Facial recognition is a method of identifying or authenticating the identity of people through their faces. Nowadays, facial recognition systems that use multispectral images achieve better results than those that use only visible spectral band images. In this work, a novel architecture for facial recognition that uses multiple deep convolutional neural networks and multispectral images is proposed. A domain-specific transfer-learning methodology applied to a deep neural network pre-trained in RGB images is shown to generalize well to the multispectral domain. We also propose a skin detector module for forgery detection. Several experiments were planned to assess the performance of our methods. First, we evaluate the performance of the forgery detection module using face masks and coverings of different materials. A second study was carried out with the objective of tuning the parameters of our domain-specific transfer-learning methodology, in particular which layers of the pre-trained network should be retrained to obtain good adaptation to multispectral images. A third study was conducted to evaluate the performance of support vector machines (SVM) and k-nearest neighbor classifiers using the embeddings obtained from the trained neural network. Finally, we compare the proposed method with other state-of-the-art approaches. The experimental results show performance improvements in the Tufts and CASIA NIR-VIS 2.0 multispectral databases, with a rank-1 score of 99.7% and 99.8%, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The 3-D finite-element method is applied to compute conductive couplings in a transmission line right of way. The domain under analysis is composed of several underground structures, such as ground wires of high-voltage towers, a coated pipeline section, and a steel-reinforced masonry enclosure. A nonhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition procedure is employed to overcome the modeling difficulties of this particular problem. The aim of this paper is to present a photogrammetric method for determining the dimensions of fiat surfaces, such as billboards, based on a single digital image. A mathematical model was adapted to generate linear equations for vertical and horizontal lines in the object space. These lines are identified and measured in the image and the rotation matrix is computed using an in direct method. The distance between the camera and the surface is measured using a lasermeter, providing the coordinates of the camera perspective center. Eccentricity of the lasermeter center related to the camera perspective center is modeled by three translations, which are computed using a calibration procedure. Some experiments were performed to test the proposed method and the achieved results are within a relative error of about 1 percent in areas and distances in the object space. Purpose: To describe the use of work process modelling to optimise the organisation of the demand for oral health treatment in primary care units in Brazil. Materials and Methods: The oral health care routine was at first described as the “AS IS” model, which was evaluated by the oral team professionals, rearranged, and further described as the “TO BE” model described using a business process management modelling tool. The significant increase in the demand of patients due to restrictions offered by the dental service in addition to non-urgent treatments being avoided by patients during COVID-19 pandemic was also considered. Results: Structuring the work processes in a visual way using modelling tools was useful to picture the entire treatment process and adjust when needed. The use of the managerial tool was useful to understand and reorganise the workflow of organising the demand and ultimately improve the efficiency of the resources. The use of such managerial tools helped oral health professionals to efficiently rearrange their tasks and set priorities to meet their needs. Conclusions: With the use of management tools, each unit can readjust its structures and ways of working, aiming to improve the quality of public health care services provided to patients. Introduction: Mental disorders are highly prevalent among children, yet access to timely and effective treatment remains limited. Untreated or poorly managed mental disorders in children are associated with significant functional deterioration and long-term consequences. The validation of reliable assessment tools is crucial for identifying functional impairments and guiding interventions in this population. This study aimed to assess the utility and psychometric properties of the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0 (WHODAS 2.0) in evaluating functional impairment among children and adolescents receiving specialized mental health care in Mexican psychiatric hospitals. Method: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted from January 2018 to February 2020 in two psychiatric public hospitals in Mexico. The Spanish version of the WHODAS 2.0 was adapted for the pediatric population, and its psychometric properties were evaluated among 390 children and adolescents receiving psychiatric care. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, and tests of internal consistency and validity. Results: The WHODAS 2.0 demonstrated high internal consistency (α =.92) and convergent validity, with significant correlations observed between WHODAS scores and clinical variables. Exploratory factor analysis revealed a six-dimensional structure, with gender-specific differences identified in functional impairment patterns. Discussion: The study provides robust evidence supporting the utility and psychometric properties of the WHODAS 2.0 for assessing functional impairment in children and adolescents with mental disorders in Mexican psychiatric hospitals. Studies on the effectiveness of the discourse motivating the creation of protected areas (PAs) and their empirical reality are scarce. The lack of knowledge in this area affects programs and policies on the maintenance and creation of protected areas. Thus, we investigated this matter using the case study of the Nascente Geraizeiras Sustainable Development Reserve (NGSDR) in Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The reserve comprises a transition area between Cerrado and the Atlantic Forest, two critical biomes in the world of biodiversity and the only two hotspots in Brazil. Changes in land use were identified over a period of 30 years, from 1987 to 2017, based on a compilation of the arguments associated with the creation of the PA, geographic information system (GIS) techniques, remote sensing (RS) data, and landscape ecology indices. Seven types of land use were identified using Random Forest classifier R software: native forest, silviculture, pasture, bare soil, rocky outcrop, watercourses, and agriculture. The overall mean accuracy of the classification was 90% for all five periods. The results demonstrated that the creation of protected areas is supported by contexts of land use still based on traditional. The case study showed the discourse served as a fundamental strategy in the beginning of the mobilization that culminated in the creation of the NGSDR, in the containment of forestry, in an increase in native forest areas, and in reduced fragmentation, leading to an improvement in the conservation status of the landscape. The present study encourages future researchers to apply the evaluated approach and demonstrates its potential in assessing the formulation of programs and policies on protected areas worldwide, providing valid indicators for the improvement of ecosystem services. Background: With increasing healthcare service utilization and the introduction of costly therapies, healthcare organizations are pressured to deliver costeffective services within constrained budgets. Rising costs and the need for efficient healthcare delivery are major concerns for governments, insurers, and health plans. Objectives: It aims to understand the impact of these intangible assets on creating value and organizational resilience in healthcare, informing better practices and strategies for VBHC implementation. Methods: An applied research approach using the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) methodology was adopted. The research was divided into seven interconnected Work Packages (WPs), each designed to investigate different aspects of the integration between VBHC and intangible assets, with a focus on enhancing organizational resilience through innovative health processes. Key methodologies included literature reviews and qualitative analyses, employing Open Innovation and Design Thinking. Results: The study revealed a dynamic interplay between VBHC, organizational resilience, and intangible assets. It showed that managerial effectiveness is influenced by direct patient outcomes and elements like intellectual capital and organizational reputation. Data integration from various Work Packages provided new insights into how intangible assets underpin VBHC strategies, proposing novel management approaches. Findings highlight the essential role of intangible assets in enhancing service delivery and fostering sustainable healthcare practices. Discussion: The study highlights a significant oversight in the integration of intangible assets within healthcare organizations, despite their crucial role in optimizing VBHC. It supports literature emphasizing the importance of intellectual capital and organizational culture in enhancing healthcare management efficiency and resilience. A paradigm shift in VBHC to include these assets is needed for building a more adaptable and sustainable healthcare system. This integration can lead to better clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction, and overall healthcare efficiency, aligning more closely with VBHC goals. Conclusion: Recognizing and effectively managing intangible assets are paramount for the successful implementation of VBHC and enhanced organizational resilience. Strategic integration of these assets into healthcare management practices can significantly improve patient outcomes and create a more sustainable, patient-centered, and resilient healthcare system. Objectives Declination in femoral neck-shaft angle (NSA) is commonly linked to an increased level of physical activity during life. More recently, however, research suggests that lower NSA might also be explained, in part, as the mechanical consequence of differences in ecogeographic body proportions. This study tests the proposed link between NSA and climatic-induced body proportions, using relative body mass (RBM), throughout the course of development. Materials and Methods NSA and RBM were collected for 445 immature remains from five geographic locations. NSA and RBM were standardized for age-effects. ANOVA was used to examine when population differences emerged in both NSA and RBM. Regression analyses were used to examine the pattern of relationship between NSA and RBM. Results Populations differ significantly in NSA and RBM before skeletal maturity, and these differences occur early in life. While both NSA and RBM change over the course of development, no significant relationship was found between NSA and RBM for any sample, or any age category ( p = .244). Discussion Individuals who have relatively greater relative body mass do not necessarily have lower NSA. Population differences in NSA were found to be variable, while differences in RBM remained consistent across the developmental span. Taken together, these results suggest that regardless of body proportions, the degree of declination of NSA is presumed to be similar among individuals with similar gait and ambulatory behaviors. Conversely, populations differ in RBM from birth, and these differences are consistent throughout development. These two measures likely are responsive to diffing stimuli, and any potential relationship is likely complex and multifactorial. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Determining an individual's sex is crucial in several fields, such as forensic anthropology, archaeology, and medicine. Accurate sex estimation, alongside the estimation of age at death, stature, and ancestry, is of paramount importance for creating a biological profile. This profile helps narrow the potential pool of missing persons and aids identification. Our research focuses on the second cervical vertebra and odontoid process, which is particularly valuable due to their high sexual dimorphism. This brief research is structured as follows: we provide an overview of morphometric analysis of the second cervical vertebra for accurate sex estimation in forensic anthropology. We then delve into a case report to explore sexual dimorphism of the C2 vertebrae. Moreover, we discuss some of these studies that showed a significant correlation between the dimensions of the second cervical vertebrae and height, suggesting that the C2 can be used as a reliable indicator for stature estimation. The high accuracy rate of sex estimation using the second cervical vertebrae suggests that this method is a valuable tool for forensic anthropologists. The purpose of this study is to evaluate how Blockchain Technology (BCT) can support the implementation of Lean Automation. We conducted a systematic literature review to understand how BCT is being implemented in the supply chain management (SCM) domain and to evaluate how this technology can be used to reduce inefficiencies in supply chains. Firstly, we developed a holistic taxonomy of wastes to identify the most common non-value activities. Then, both inductive and deductive content analyses were performed, the latter being coded using the taxonomy. Our findings identified the most common BCT-based application themes in SCM and ways that this technology can be used to support future implementation of Blockchain-enabled Lean Automation (B-eLA). Additionally, we proposed a future research agenda. The study provides important contributions at the intersection between BCT, lean production, and Industry 4.0 within the context of SCM and seeks to exploit BCT's potential to improve businesses' efficiency, effectiveness and productivity. After rapid approval and installation, the SND@LHC Collaboration was able to gather data successfully in 2022 and 2023. Neutrino interactions from νμs originating at the LHC IP1 were observed. Since muons constitute the major background for neutrino interactions, the muon flux entering the acceptance was also measured. To improve the rejection power of the detector and to increase the fiducial volume, a third Veto plane was recently installed. The energy resolution of the calorimeter system was measured in a test beam. This will help with the identification of νe interactions that can be used to probe charm production in the pseudo-rapidity range of SND@LHC (7.2 < η < 8.4). Events with three outgoing muons have been observed and are being studied. With no vertex in the target, these events are very likely from muon trident production in the rock before the detector. Events with a vertex in the detector could be from trident production, photon conversion, or positron annihilation. To enhance SND@LHC's physics case, an upgrade is planned for HL-LHC that will increase the statistics and reduce the systematics. Understanding hiring difficulties and the nature of hiring frictions that employers face is important for the promotion of economic growth and the individual success of both firms and workers. This study sheds light on this issue by presenting evidence from an original, nationally representative survey of information technology (IT) helpdesks that contains detailed measurements of skill requirements, organizational characteristics, and market structure. The results indicate that the incidence of persistent hiring difficulties is modest, and that measures of technology and technical skill demands are not associated with greater hiring problems. Organizational attributes and market structure are generally more predictive of hiring frictions than are skill requirements. Human resource practices, management strategy, and labor-market monopsony power all play key roles. These results cast doubt on simple stories about technology-driven hiring problems and point to the importance of examining a broader range of organizational and market factors when addressing workforce challenges. This paper presents an integrated framework that combines the strengths of three relevant business excellence philosophies: Theory of Constraints, Lean, and Six Sigma (TLS). The integrated framework increases the TLS Orientation of a firm when management employs a unique growth-oriented mindset, adopts global measurements, and implements an integrated continuous improvement methodology. We discuss how a small-to-medium enterprise (a real but disguised manufacturing firm in India) implemented the proposed framework by employing the cognate key concepts and tools in an integrated manner, and improved its business excellence in terms of improved flow, reduced waste, and increased process capability, which, in turn, strengthened its financial performance. We conclude the paper by discussing the limitations of the study (e.g. an application in a small business) and providing future research directions to further develop its underlying theory and validate the proposed TLS orientation construct by means of case studies and questionnaires. The Scattering and Neutrino Detector at the LHC (SND@LHC) started taking data at the beginning of Run 3 of the LHC. The experiment is designed to perform measurements with neutrinos produced in proton-proton collisions at the LHC in an energy range between 100 GeV and 1 TeV. It covers a previously unexplored pseudo-rapidity range of 7.2 < η < 8.4 . The detector is located 480 m downstream of the ATLAS interaction point in the TI18 tunnel. It comprises a veto system, a target consisting of tungsten plates interleaved with nuclear emulsion and scintillating fiber (SciFi) trackers, followed by a muon detector (UpStream, US and DownStream, DS). In this article we report the measurement of the muon flux in three subdetectors: the emulsion, the SciFi trackers and the DownStream Muon detector. The muon flux per integrated luminosity through an 18 × 18 cm 2 area in the emulsion is: 1.5 ± 0.1 (stat) × 10 4 fb/cm 2. The muon flux per integrated luminosity through a 31 × 31 cm 2 area in the centre of the SciFi is: 2.06 ± 0.01 (stat) ± 0.12 (sys) × 10 4 fb/cm 2 The muon flux per integrated luminosity through a 52 × 52 cm 2 area in the centre of the downstream muon system is: 2.35 ± 0.01 (stat) ± 0.10 (sys) × 10 4 fb/cm 2 The total relative uncertainty of the measurements by the electronic detectors is 6 % for the SciFi and 4 % for the DS measurement. This paper discusses the historical use of natural stone for various purposes and highlights the substantial waste generated by quarries and stone processing plants in modern industrialized production. These waste materials are typically categorized into unused rock and sludges from processing. This accumulation of waste presents a global environmental challenge and a financial burden for the stone industry. In-depth investigation into the development of a binder incorporating carbonated sludge from marble and limestone industries, combined with polyester resin, for building stone composites was performed. This research involved chemical and microstructural characterization of the sludges, preparation of mixtures with polyester resin, stone composites manufacturing, and subsequent testing to determine and validate the optimal binder composition. Given the achieved results, and the demonstrated feasibility of using a binder composed of polyester resin and carbonated sludge for stone composite production, it was concluded that employing carbonated sludge as an economic resource is indeed viable. Water pollution is a serious worldwide problem. Among its pollutants, dyes that are overused by various types of industries and are resistant to conventional effluent treatments stand out. In this study, mixed copper and nickel ferrites NixCu(1-x)Fe2O4 (x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 e 1.0), were produced by the EDTA-Citrate complexation method, characterized and applied in photocatalysis with methylene blue (MB) and rhodamine B (RhB) dyes, varying the reaction pH between 2, 6 and 10. The ferrites with the highest percentages of copper had a tetragonal structure, while those with the highest percentages of nickel had a cubic structure, all with inverse spinel and all presenting bandgap values lower than 2 eV. Samples with higher percentages of copper (x = 0 and 0.2) at pH 10 showed degradation of approximately 55% for RhB and 40% for MB. A mixture of MB and RhB was also evaluated, showing a greater removal of methylene blue due to its preferential adsorption on the surface of the material.
