Objective: This study aimed to understand the impact of pain management programmes, focusing on the unwanted effects and their influence on patients' long-term use of self-management strategies. Design: Qualitative study. Setting: Specialist musculoskeletal hospital in North London, England. Participants: Patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain that have completed a pain management programme. Intervention: Multidisciplinary pain management programmes. Main measures: Data were collected regarding patients' experiences and unwanted effects from the pain management programme using semi-structured interviews. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Results: Fourteen participant interviews were included in the analysis (median age 54 years, 12 females). Four themes were generated from the data: Benefits and burdens, Pain management programme and real life, Social support and Healthcare interventions. Unwanted effects included heightened anxiety related to negative interactions with peers, being in a new environment, worries about ability to cope with the programme, social anxiety from being in a group, the strain on families due to participants being away from home and a sense of abandonment at end of the programme. Burdens associated with implementing pain management strategies were identified, including the emotional burden of imposing their self-management on close family and competing demands with time and energy spent on self-management at the expense of work or home commitments. Conclusions: Pain management programmes have an important role in helping patients to learn how to self-manage chronic pain. Their unwanted effects and the treatment burdens associated with long-term self-management may be an important consideration in improving the longevity of their beneficial effects. Background Infection prevention (IP) measures are designed to mitigate the transmission of pathogens in healthcare. Using large-scale viral genomic and social network analyses, we determined if IP measures used during the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic were adequate in protecting healthcare workers (HCWs) and patients from acquiring SARS-CoV-2. Methods We performed retrospective cross-sectional analyses of viral genomics from all available SARS-CoV-2 viral samples collected at UC San Diego Health and social network analysis using the electronic medical record to derive temporospatial overlap of infections among related viromes and supplemented with contact tracing data. The outcome measure was any instance of healthcare transmission, defined as cases with closely related viral genomes and epidemiological connection within the healthcare setting during the infection window. Between November 2020 through January 2022, 12 933 viral genomes were obtained from 35 666 patients and HCWs. Results Among 5112 SARS-CoV-2 viral samples sequenced from the second and third waves of SARS-CoV-2 (pre-Omicron), 291 pairs were derived from persons with a plausible healthcare overlap. Of these, 34 pairs (12%) were phylogenetically linked: 19 attributable to household and 14 to healthcare transmission. During the Omicron wave, 2106 contact pairs among 7821 sequences resulted in 120 (6%) related pairs among 32 clusters, of which 10 were consistent with healthcare transmission. Transmission was more likely to occur in shared spaces in the older hospital compared with the newer hospital (2.54 vs 0.63 transmission events per 1000 admissions, P <.001). The Kuroshio occasionally carries warm and salty North Pacific Water into fresher waters of the South China Sea, forming a front with a complex temperature–salinity (T–S) structure to the west of the Luzon Strait. In this study, we examine the T–S interleavings formed by alternating layers of North Pacific Water with South China Sea Water in a front formed during the winter monsoon season of 2014. Using observations from a glider array following a free-floating wave-powered vertical profiling float to calculate the fine-scale parameters Turner angle, Tu, and Richardson number, Ri, we identified areas favorable to double-diffusion convection and shear instability observed in a T–S interleaving. We evaluated the contribution of double-diffusion convection and shear instabilities to the thermal variance diffusivity, χ, using microstructure data and compared it with previous parameterization schemes based on fine-scale properties. We discover that turbulent mixing is not accurately parameterized when both Tu and Ri are within critical ranges (Tu > 60; Ri < ¼). In particular, χ associated with salt finger processes was an order of magnitude higher (6.7 × 10−7 K2 s−1) than in regions where only velocity shear was likely to drive mixing (8.7 × 10−8 K2 s−1). This article reports on the recent mining and production status of ruby in Longido, Tanzania. Faceted-grade rubies and their matrix from Longido Area, Tanzania, were investigated by standard gemological testing, including FTIR, UV-VIS, Raman spectra, and LA-ICP-MS. Microscopic observations revealed dense needle-like and triangular inclusions, distinct growth lines, and color banding as typical inclusions. In agreement with the Raman results, the transmission FTIR spectrum confirmed the presence of aluminum hydroxide. The Raman spectra identified associated minerals and inclusions, including zoisite, parasites, feldspar within the matrix, rutile, and diaspore in the ruby host. The chemistry analysis revealed a high amount of Cr and relatively low iron as a good indicator of geographic origin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High resolution shipboard observations reveal the complex processes controlling the evolution and subduction of a cold and salty, dense filament in the Bay of Bengal (BoB). The filament, likely formed through coastal upwelling, was advected offshore by the mesoscale velocity field, and was brought adjacent to a shallow, low salinity mixed layer by mesoscale strain. The front that formed on the Eastern edge of the dense filament was observed to undergo both restratification and steepening, creating barrier layers, in response to evolving mesoscale and submesoscale convergence and divergences. Measurements and analyses indicate that the development of both small‐scale instabilities such as symmetric instability (SI) and slightly larger scale ageostrophic secondary circulation (ASC), acted in concert to subduct and stir surface heat into the interior. These mechanisms also drive the generation of temperature inversions from O (1 km) lateral temperature variability at the surface, demonstrating the need for model parameterizations at such spatial scales. Our results highlight the importance of submesoscale dynamics in creating and warming barrier layers, facilitating vertical heat exchanges, and setting sea surface temperature in the Bay of Bengal, a critical input to coupled atmosphere/ocean models of the southwest monsoon. Such complex dynamics should be considered in regions where salinity governs stratification and compensated waters stir. Plain Language Summary: Improving predictions for the monsoon seasons in the Bay of Bengal depends on the accuracy of the ocean's surface temperatures, which involve both one‐dimensional and three‐dimensional processes that impact the vertical structure of the upper ocean. In this study, we observed a cold and salty water mass that upwelled near the coast of India drift into the center of the Bay where it met ambient low salinity water to create surface lateral density gradients. High‐resolution shipboard observations revealed evidence of small‐scale physical processes as well as features typical of regions where the vertical structure is governed by salinity. The observations document the complexity of upper ocean heat content on scales less than 10 km, with impacts for sea surface temperature and couple ocean ‐atmosphere forecasting of the southwest monsoon. Gamma-ray spectroscopy is an effective technique for radioactive material characterization, routine inventory verification, nuclear safeguards, health physics, and source search scenarios. Gamma-ray spectrometers typically cannot be operated in the immediate vicinity of nuclear reactors due to their high flux fields and their resulting inability to resolve individual pulses. Low-power reactor facilities offer the possibility to study reactor gamma-ray fields, a domain of experiments hitherto poorly explored. In this work, we present gamma-ray spectroscopy experiments performed with various detectors in two reactors: The EPFL zero-power research reactor CROCUS, and the neutron beam facility at the Ohio State University Research Reactor (OSURR). We employed inorganic scintillators (CeBr3), organic scintillators (trans-stilbene and organic glass), and high-purity germanium semiconductors (HPGe) to cover a range of typical—and new—instruments used in gamma-ray spectroscopy. The aim of this study is to provide a guideline for reactor users regarding detector performance, observed responses, and therefore available information in the reactor photon fields up to 2 MeV. The results indicate several future prospects, such as the online (at criticality) monitoring of fission products (like Xe, I, and La), dual-particle sensitive experiments, and code validation opportunities. This paper reports on an observation of three-dimensional (3D) arrivals for which the change in the direction of horizontally refracted sound is nearly 180°. The experimental site is Jan Mayen Channel (JMCh), which connects the Greenland and Norwegian Seas. During the experiment, signals from a moored source transmitting a 500–1500 Hz sweep every 4 h were recorded by three surface drifters equipped with hydrophone arrays. Over a 3-day period, the drifters moved north across JMCh toward the moored source. In each recording, an in-plane arrival is identified. In a subset of these recordings, a second arrival is observed, having travel time consistent with propagation from the moored source, turning at the ridge on the south side of the channel, and arriving at the drifters. In a smaller subset of recordings, a third arrival is also observed having travel time consistent with a turning point on the face of the bathymetric rise on the west end of the channel that forms the Jan Mayen volcano. A 3D ray trace is employed to show the change in direction results from repeated reflections from the seafloor such that it is classified as horizontal refraction and not a single-bounce reflection. This study investigates three-dimensional semidiurnal internal tide (IT) energetics in the vicinity of La Jolla Canyon, a steep shelf submarine canyon off the Southern California coast, with the Stanford Unstructured Nonhydrostatic Terrain-Following Adaptive Navier–Stokes Simulator (SUNTANS) numerical simulator. Numerical simulations show vertical structure and temporal phasing consistent with detailed field observations. ITs induce large (approximately 34 m from peak to peak) isotherm displacements and net onshore IT energy flux up to 200 W m−1. Although the net IT energy flux is onshore, the steep supercritical slope around the canyon results in strong reflection. The model provides the full life span of internal tides around the canyon, including internal tide generation, propagation, and dissipation. ITs propagate into the canyon from the south and are reflected back toward offshore from the canyon's north side. In the inner part of the canyon, elevated mixing occurs in the middle layer due to an interaction between incident mode-1 ITs and reflected higher-mode ITs. The magnitude of IT flux, generation, and dissipation on the south side of the canyon are higher than those on the north side. An interference pattern in horizontal kinetic energy and available potential energy with a scale of approximately 20–50 km arises due to low-mode wave reflections. Our results provide new insight into IT dynamics associated with a small-scale canyon topography. Significance Statement: Internal waves play an important role in ocean circulations and ecosystems. In particular, internal waves with frequencies of tides, known as internal tides, strongly enhance energy, heat, and mass transport in coastal oceans. This study presents internal tide dynamics in La Jolla Canyon, California, using a high-resolution numerical model. Model results show energy convergence in the canyon leading to internal tide energy dissipation and mixing. Some parts of internal tide energy reflect back offshore resulting in standing internal waves off California. Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are increasing globally, causing economic, human health, and ecosystem harm. In spite of the frequent occurrence of HABs, the mechanisms responsible for their exceptionally high biomass remain imperfectly understood. A 50-y- old hypothesis posits that some dense blooms derive from dinoflagellate motility: organisms swim upward during the day to photosynthesize and downward at night to access deep nutrients. This allows dinoflagellates to outgrow their nonmotile competitors. We tested this hypothesis with in situ data from an autonomous, ocean-wave- powered vertical profiling system. We showed that the dinoflagellate Lingulodinium polyedra’s vertical migration led to depletion of deep nitrate during a 2020 red tide HAB event. Downward migration began at dusk, with the maximum migration depth determined by local nitrate concentrations. Losses of nitrate at depth were balanced by proportional increases in phytoplankton chlorophyll concentrations and suspended particle load, conclusively linking vertical migration to the access and assimilation of deep nitrate in the ocean environment. Vertical migration during the red tide created anomalous biogeochemical conditions compared to 70 y of climatological data, demonstrating the capacity of these events to temporarily reshape the coastal ocean’s ecosystem and biogeochemistry. Advances in the understanding of the physiological, behavioral, and metabolic dynamics of HAB-forming organisms from cutting-edge observational techniques will improve our ability to forecast HABs and mitigate their consequences in the future. An at-sea experiment in deep water was conducted to explore the impact of small-scale sound-speed variability on mid-frequency (1 – 10 kHz) acoustic propagation. Short-range (1 – 5 km) acoustic transmissions were sent through the upper ocean (0 – 200 m) while oceanographic instruments simultaneously measured the ocean environment within 2 km of the single upper turning points of the acoustic transmissions. During these transmissions, acoustic receptions over a 7.875 m vertical line array show closely spaced, sometimes interfering arrivals. Ray and full-wave simulations of the transmissions using nearby sound-speed profiles are compared deterministically to the received acoustic signals. The sensitivity of the acoustic arrivals to the vertical scales of ocean sound speed is tested by comparing the observed and simulated arrival intensity where the sound-speed profile used by the simulation is smoothed to varying scales. Observations and modeling both suggest that vertical fine-scale structures (1 – 10 m) embedded in the sound-speed profile have strong second derivatives which allow for the formation of acoustic caustics as well as potentially interfering acoustic propagation multipaths. We develop a Schwinger-Keldysh effective field theory describing the hydrodynamics of a fluid with conserved charge and dipole moments, together with conserved momentum. The resulting hydrodynamic modes are highly unusual, including sound waves with quadratic (magnon-like) dispersion relation and subdiffusive decay rate. Hydrodynamics itself is unstable below four spatial dimensions. We show that the momentum density is, at leading order, the Goldstone boson for a dipole symmetry which appears spontaneously broken at finite charge density. Unlike an ordinary fluid, the presence or absence of energy conservation qualitatively changes the decay rates of the hydrodynamic modes. This effective field theory naturally couples to curved spacetime and background gauge fields; in the flat spacetime limit, we reproduce the "mixed rank tensor fields" previously coupled to fracton matter. Heparan sulfate (HS) is a sulfated polysaccharide with a wide range of biological activities. There is an increasing interest in the development of structurally homogeneous HS oligosaccharides as therapeutics. However, the factors influencing the pharmacokinetic properties of HS-based therapeutics remain unknown. Here, we report the pharmacokinetic properties of a panel of dodecasaccharides (12-mers) with varying sulfation patterns in healthy mice and uncover the pharmacokinetic properties of an octadecasaccharide (18-mer) in acutely injured mice. In the 12-mer panel, 1 12-mer, known as dekaparin, is anticoagulant, and 3 12-mers are nonanticoagulant. The concentrations of 12-mers in plasma and urine were determined by the disaccharide analysis using liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. We observed a striking difference between anticoagulant and nonanticoagulant oligosaccharides in the 12-mer panel, showing that anticoagulant dekaparin had a 4.6-fold to 8.6-fold slower clearance and 4.4-fold to 8-fold higher plasma exposure compared to nonanticoagulant 12-mers. We also observed that the clearance of HS oligosaccharides is impacted by disease. Using an antiinflammatory 18-mer, we discovered that the clearance of 18-mer is reduced 2.8-fold in a liver failure mouse model compared to healthy mice. Our results suggest that oligosaccharides are rapidly cleared renally if they have low interaction with circulating proteins. We observed that the clearance rate of oligosaccharides is inversely associated with the degree of binding to target proteins, which can vary in response to pathophysiological conditions. Introduction: Remotely delivered pain management programmes have been offered in place of in-person programmes by many chronic pain services since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. There is a lack of evidence regarding the acceptability of these programmes. In this evaluation, we have explored patients' acceptability of a remotely delivered pain management programme for patients with persistent musculoskeletal pain. Methods: Qualitative data were collected using focus groups with participants who had previously attended the remote pain management programme. Data were analysed using abductive analysis. Results: Three focus groups were conducted with a total of 13 participants. The programmme was either entirely acceptable, had some acceptable components or was not acceptable to patients. Factors leading to the programme being acceptable include learning to manage pain from home, receiving high quality care from home, enhancing the potential of rehabilitation using technology, enabling attendance on a pain management programme from home, overcoming social distancing requirements of COVID-19 using technology, and virtual peer support. Factors leading to the programme not being acceptable include having an inappropriate home environment for virtual therapy, communication challenges with virtual therapy, technological issues and concerns regarding the quality of care. Conclusions: There is a spectrum of acceptability with respect to the remote programme. The factors that influence this are dynamic, individual and situational. Hybrid programmes have the potential to enhance access to pain management programmes and improve patient experience and programme outcomes in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Network effects are the added value derived solely from the popularity of a product in an economic market. Using agent-based models inspired by statistical physics, we propose a minimal theory of a competitive market for (nearly) indistinguishable goods with demand-side network effects, sold by statistically identical sellers. With weak network effects, the model reproduces conventional microeconomics: there is a statistical steady state of (nearly) perfect competition. Increasing network effects, we find a phase transition to a robust nonequilibrium phase driven by the spontaneous formation and collapse of fads in the market. When sellers update prices sufficiently quickly, an emergent monopolist can capture the market and undercut competition, leading to a symmetry- and ergodicity-breaking transition. The nonequilibrium phase simultaneously exhibits three empirically established phenomena not contained in the standard theory of competitive markets: spontaneous price fluctuations, persistent seller profits, and broad distributions of firm market shares. Space- and time-continuous seafloor temperature observations captured the three-dimensional structure of shoaling nonlinear internal waves (NLIWs) off of La Jolla, California. NLIWs were tracked for hundreds of meters in the cross- and along-shelf directions using a fiber optic distributed temperature sensing (DTS) seafloor array, complemented by an ocean-wave-powered vertical profiling mooring. Trains of propagating cold-water pulses were observed on the DTS array inshore of the location of polarity transition predicted by weakly nonlinear internal wave theory. The subsequent evolution of the temperature signatures during shoaling was consistent with that of strongly nonlinear internal waves with a large Froude number, highlighting their potential to impact property exchange. Unexpectedly, individual NLIWs were trailed by a coherent, small-scale pattern of seabed temperature variability as they moved across the mid- and inner shelf. A kinematic model was used to demonstrate that the observed patterns were consistent with a transverse instability with an along-crest wavelength of ∼10 m—a distance comparable to the cross-crest width of the wave core—and with an inferred amplitude of several meters. The signature of this instability is consistent with the span-wise vortical circulations generated in three-dimensional direct numerical simulations of shoaling and breaking nonlinear internal waves. The coupling between the small-scale transverse wave wake and turbulent wave core may have an important impact on mass, momentum, and tracer redistribution in the coastal ocean. Significance Statement: Internal waves permeate the ocean and atmosphere. Their transport of energy and momentum plays a central role in the ocean as a physical system and mediates critical biogeochemical property exchange. In the coastal ocean, internal waves fuel the local ecosystem by redistributing nutrients and shape the local geomorphology by resuspending and transporting sediment. Despite these important impacts, a detailed understanding of nonlinear internal wave evolution in shallow water remains an elusive goal, limited by the difficulty of observing the process in action. Here we describe a transformative observational approach to track internal waves through shoaling to dissipation, combining fiber optic distributed temperature sensing and ocean-wave-powered vertical profiling to track individual waves continuously in the cross- and along-shelf direction. The waves arise from the locally energetic internal tide and undergo rapid nonlinear transformation in the shallow waters of the inner shelf. Our measurements provide the first observational evidence that after evolving into highly nonlinear waves of elevation, the waves develop a trailing, wake-like, three-dimensional instability. This instability resembles the vortical coherent structures generated in high resolution numerical simulations of internal wave shoaling, previous observations of related phenomena in the atmosphere, and in breaking surface gravity waves. The observed transverse structure has an along-crest wavelength of only ∼10 m, making it nearly invisible to traditional ocean sampling techniques. The generation of coherent vortical structures during internal wave shoaling may have a profound influence on the exchange of energy, nutrients, and sediments in coastal oceans and lakes globally. The future Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission aims to map sea surface height (SSH) in wide swaths with an unprecedented spatial resolution and subcentimeter accuracy. The instrument performance needs to be verified using independent measurements in a process known as calibration and validation (Cal/Val). The SWOT Cal/Val needs in situ measurements that can make synoptic observations of SSH field over an O(100) km distance with an accuracy matching the SWOT requirements specified in terms of the along-track wavenumber spectrum of SSH error. No existing in situ observing system has been demonstrated to meet this challenge. A field campaign was conducted during September 2019–January 2020 to assess the potential of various instruments and platforms to meet the SWOT Cal/Val requirement. These instruments include two GPS buoys, two bottom pressure recorders (BPR), three moorings with fixed conductivity–temperature–depth (CTD) and CTD profilers, and a glider. The observations demonstrated that 1) the SSH (hydrostatic) equation can be closed with 1–3 cm RMS residual using BPR, CTD mooring and GPS SSH, and 2) using the upper-ocean steric height derived from CTD moorings enable subcentimeter accuracy in the California Current region during the 2019/20 winter. Given that the three moorings are separated at 10–20–30 km distance, the observations provide valuable information about the small-scale SSH variability associated with the ocean circulation at frequencies ranging from hourly to monthly in the region. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic interrupted the delivery of face-to-face pain services including pain management programmes in the United Kingdom with considerable negative impact on patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain. We aimed to develop and implement a remotely delivered pain management programme (PMP) using video-conferencing technology that contains all the core components of a full programme: the 'virtual PMP' (vPMP). By reporting on the process of this development, we endeavour to help address the paucity of literature on the development of remote pain management programmes. Methods: The vPMP was developed by an inter-disciplinary group of professionals as a quality improvement (QI) project. The Model for Improvement Framework was employed with patient involvement at the design phase and at subsequent improvements. Improvement was measured qualitatively with frequent and repeated qualitative data collection leading to programme change. Quantitative patient demographic comparisons were made with a patient cohort who had been on a face-to-face PMP pathway. Results: Sixty-one patients on the PMP waiting list were contacted and 43 met the criteria for the programme. Fourteen patients participated in three vPMP cycles. Patient involvement and comprehensive stakeholder consultation were essential to a robust design for the first vPMP. Continued involvement of patient partners during the QI process led to rapid resolution of implementation problems. The most prominent issues that needed action were technical challenges including training needs, participant access to physical and technological resources, participant fatigue and concerns about adequate communication and peer support. Conclusion: This report demonstrates how a remotely delivered PMP, fully in line with national guidance, was rapidly developed and implemented in a hospital setting for patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain. We also discuss the relevance of our findings to the issues of cost, patient experience, patient preferences and inequities of access in delivering telerehabilitation for chronic pain. The ability to forecast the biological productivity of the coastal ocean relies on the quantification of the physical processes that deliver nutrients to the euphotic zone. Here we explore these pathways using observations of the coupled biological and physical variability of waters offshore of the east coast of Tasmania in the summertime. The observations include an array of moored autonomous profilers deployed over an 18‐d period—providing continuous, full‐depth measurements of turbulent microstructure, temperature, velocity, and chlorophyll a (Chl a) fluorescence, complemented by shipboard nutrient measurements. Local upwelling was driven by the encroaching East Australian Current (EAC) extension onto the shelf and to a lesser extent the local winds. The interaction of the local winds and the encroaching boundary current was reflected in the shelf nutrient budget and led to a rapid increase in subsurface Chl a. Diffusive vertical fluxes had minimal impact on subsurface Chl a in the mid‐shelf and outer‐shelf. Upwelling‐favorable winds were too weak to drive significant vertical mixing, and mixing associated with the current‐driven Ekman transport was too deep compared to the euphotic zone depth. The observed subsurface Chl a did not reflect the satellite estimates of productivity. Since the EAC extension transports warm, low‐nutrient surface waters from the subtropics, satellite chlorophyll measurements decreased during the same period the depth‐averaged Chl a increased. This seeming paradox illustrated how long duration, full water column sampling can elucidate the coupled biological and physical processes that aid our ongoing effort to forecast the biological state of the coastal ocean. We develop a hydrodynamic effective field theory on the Schwinger-Keldysh contour for fluids with charge, energy, and momentum conservation, but only discrete rotational symmetry. The consequences of anisotropy on thermodynamics and first-order dissipative hydrodynamics are detailed in some simple examples in two spatial dimensions, but our construction extends to any spatial dimension and any rotation group (discrete or continuous). We find many possible terms in the equations of motion which are compatible with the existence of an entropy current, but not with the ability to couple the fluid to background gauge fields and vielbein. The Wirewalker (WW) ocean-wave-powered vertical profiling system allows the collection of high-resolution oceanographic data due to its rapid profiling, hydrodynamically quiet operation, and long endurance. We have assessed the potential for measuring fine-scale ocean velocities from the Wirewalker platform using commercially available acoustic velocimeters. Although the vertical profiling speed is relatively steady, platform motion affects the velocity measurements and requires correction. We present an algorithm to correct our velocity estimates using platform motion calculated from the inertial sensors—accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer—on a Nortek Signature1000 acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP). This correction, carried out ping by ping, was effective in removing the vehicle motion from the measured velocities. The motion-corrected velocities contain contributions from surface wave orbital velocities, especially near the surface, and the background currents. To proceed, we use an averaging approach that leverages both the vertical platform profiling of the system and the ∼15–20 m vertical profiling range resolution of the down-looking ADCP to separate the surface wave orbital velocities and the background flow. The former can provide information on the wave conditions. From the latter, we are able to estimate fine-scale velocity and shear with spectral wavenumber rolloff at vertical scales around 3 m, a vertical resolution several times finer than that possible from modern shipboard or fixed ADCPs with similar profiling range, and similar to recent glider measurements. When combined with a continuous time series of buoy drift calculated from the onboard GPS, a highly resolved total velocity field is obtained, with a unique combination of space and time resolution. In the Bay of Bengal, the warm, dry boreal spring concludes with the onset of the summer monsoon and accompanying southwesterly winds, heavy rains, and variable air–sea fluxes. Here, we summarize the 2018 monsoon onset using observations collected through the multinational Monsoon Intraseasonal Oscillations in the Bay of Bengal (MISO-BoB) program between the United States, India, and Sri Lanka. MISO-BoB aims to improve understanding of monsoon intraseasonal variability, and the 2018 field effort captured the coupled air–sea response during a transition from active-to-break conditions in the central BoB. The active phase of the ∼20-day research cruise was characterized by warm sea surface temperature (SST > 30°C), cold atmospheric outflows with intermittent heavy rainfall, and increasing winds (from 2 to 15 m s−1). Accumulated rainfall exceeded 200 mm with 90% of precipitation occurring during the first week. The following break period was both dry and clear, with persistent 10–12 m s−1 wind and evaporation of 0.2 mm h−1. The evolving environmental state included a deepening ocean mixed layer (from ∼20 to 50 m), cooling SST (by ∼1°C), and warming/drying of the lower to midtroposphere. Local atmospheric development was consistent with phasing of the large-scale intraseasonal oscillation. The upper ocean stores significant heat in the BoB, enough to maintain SST above 29°C despite cooling by surface fluxes and ocean mixing. Comparison with reanalysis indicates biases in air–sea fluxes, which may be related to overly cool prescribed SST. Our bounds sharpen existing Lieb–Robinson bounds by removing extraneous growth. In quantum systems drawn from zero-mean random ensembles with few-body interactions, we prove stronger bounds on the ensemble-averaged out-of-time-ordered correlator E ‖ [ A (t) , B ] ‖ F 2 . Background: From the laboratory at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, it is common to see the brown pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) traveling along the crests of ocean waves just offshore of the surf-zone. When flying in this manner, the birds can travel long distances without flapping, centimeters above the ocean's surface. Here we derive a theoretical framework for assessing the energetic savings related to this behavior, 'wave-slope soaring,' in which an organism in flight takes advantage of localized updrafts caused by traveling ocean surface gravity waves. Methods: The energy cost of steady, constant altitude flight in and out of ground effect are analyzed as controls. Potential flow theory is used to quantify the ocean wave-induced wind associated with near-shoaling, weakly nonlinear, shallow water ocean surface gravity waves moving through an atmosphere initially at rest. Using perturbation theory and the Green's function for Laplace's equation in 2D with Dirichlet boundary conditions, we obtain integrals for the horizontal and vertical components of the wave-induced wind in a frame of reference moving with the wave. Wave-slope soaring flight is then analyzed using an energetics-based approach for waves under a range of ocean conditions and the body plan of P. occidentalis. Results: For ground effect flight, we calculate a ∼15 - 25% reduction in cost of transport as compared with steady, level flight out of ground effect. When wave-slope soaring is employed at flight heights ∼2m in typical ocean conditions (2m wave height, 15s period), we calculate 60-70% reduction in cost of transport as compared with flight in ground effect. A relatively small increase in swell amplitude or decrease in flight height allows up to 100% of the cost of transport to be offset by wave-slope soaring behavior. Conclusions: The theoretical development presented here suggests there are energy savings associated with wave-slope soaring. Individual brown pelicans may significantly decrease their cost of transport utilizing this mode of flight under typical ocean conditions. Cross-shore velocities in the coastal ocean typically vary with depth. The direction and magnitude of transport experienced by meroplanktonic larvae will therefore be influenced by their vertical position. To quantify how swimming behavior and vertical position in internal waves influence larval cross-shore transport in the shallow (~ 20 m), stratified coastal waters off Southern California, we deployed swarms of novel, subsurface larval mimics, the Mini-Autonomous Underwater Explorers (M-AUEs). The M-AUEs were programmed to maintain a specified depth, and were deployed near a mooring. Transport of the M-AUEs was predominantly onshore, with average velocities up to 14 cm s-1. To put the M-AUE deployments into a broader context, we simulated > 500 individual high-frequency internal waves observed at the mooring over a 14-d deployment; in each internal wave, we released both depth-keeping and passive virtual larvae every meter in the vertical. After the waves' passage, depth-keeping virtual larvae were usually found closer to shore than passive larvae released at the same depth. Near the top of the water column (3-5-m depth), ~ 20% of internal waves enhanced onshore transport of depth-keeping virtual larvae by ≥ 50 m, whereas only 1% of waves gave similar enhancements to passive larvae. Our observations and simulations showed that depth-keeping behavior in high-frequency internal waves resulted in enhanced onshore transport at the top of the water column, and reduced offshore dispersal at the bottom, compared to being passive. The La Jolla Canyon System (LJCS) is a small, steep, shelf-incising canyon offshore of San Diego, California. Observations conducted in the fall of 2016 capture the dynamics of internal tides and turbulence patterns. Semidiurnal (D2) energy flux was oriented up-canyon; 62% ± 20% of the signal was contained in mode 1 at the offshore mooring. The observed mode-1 D2 tide was partly standing based on the ratio of group speed times energy cgE and energy flux F. Enhanced dissipation occurred near the canyon head at middepths associated with elevated strain arising from the standing wave pattern. Modes 2–5 were progressive, and energy fluxes associated with these modes were oriented down-canyon, suggesting that incident mode-1 waves were back-reflected and scattered. Flux integrated over all modes across a given canyon cross section was always onshore and generally decreased moving shoreward (from 240 ± 15 to 5 ± 0.3 kW), with a 50-kW increase in flux occurring on a section inshore of the canyon's major bend, possibly due to reflection of incident waves from the supercritical sidewalls of the bend. Flux convergence from canyon mouth to head was balanced by the volume-integrated dissipation observed. By comparing energy budgets from a global compendium of canyons with sufficient observations (six in total), a similar balance was found. One exception was Juan de Fuca Canyon, where such a balance was not found, likely due to its nontidal flows. These results suggest that internal tides incident at the mouth of a canyon system are dissipated therein rather than leaking over the sidewalls or siphoning energy to other wave frequencies. Compressible electron flow through a narrow cavity is theoretically unstable, and the oscillations occurring during the instability have been proposed as a method of generating terahertz radiation. We numerically demonstrate that the end point of this instability is a nonlinear hydrodynamic oscillator, consisting of an alternating shock wave and rarefaction-like relaxation flowing back and forth in the device. This qualitative physics is robust to cavity inhomogeneity and changes in the equation of state of the fluid. We discuss the frequency and amplitude dependence of the emitted radiation on physical parameters (viscosity, momentum relaxation rate, and bias current) beyond linear response theory, providing clear predictions for future experiments. Large-scale electrical and thermal currents in ordinary metals are well approximated by effective medium theory: global transport properties are governed by the solution to homogenized coupled diffusion equations. In some metals, including the Dirac fluid of nearly charge neutral graphene, microscopic transport is not governed by diffusion, but by a more complicated set of linearized hydrodynamic equations, which form a system of degenerate elliptic equations coupled with the Stokes equation for fluid velocity. In sufficiently inhomogeneous media, these hydrodynamic equations reduce to homogenized diffusion equations. We recast the hydrodynamic transport equations as the infimum of a functional over conserved currents and present a functional framework to model and compute the homogenized diffusion tensor relating electrical and thermal currents to charge and temperature gradients. We generalize to this system to the well-known results in homogenization theory: Tartar's proof of local convergence to the homogenized theory in periodic and highly oscillatory media and sub-additivity of the above functional in random media with highly oscillatory, stationary, and ergodic coefficients. We initiate a study of finite temperature transport in gapless and strongly coupled quantum theories with charge and dipole conservation using gauge-gravity duality. In a model with non-dynamical gravity, the bulk fields of our model include a suitable mixed-rank tensor which encodes the boundary multipole symmetry. We describe how such a theory can arise at low energies in a theory with a covariant bulk action. Studying response functions at zero density, we find that charge relaxes via a fourth-order subdiffusion equation, consistent with a recently-developed field-theoretic framework. Asian summer monsoon has a planetary‐scale, westward propagating "quasi‐biweekly" mode of variability with a 10–25 day period. Six years of moored observations at 18°N, 89.5°E in the north Bay of Bengal (BoB) reveal distinct quasi‐biweekly variability in sea surface salinity (SSS) during summer and autumn, with peak‐to‐peak amplitude of 3–8 psu. This large‐amplitude SSS variability is not due to variations of surface freshwater flux or river runoff. We show from the moored data, satellite SSS, and reanalyses that surface winds associated with the quasi‐biweekly monsoon mode and embedded weather‐scale systems, drive SSS and coastal sea level variability in 2015 summer monsoon. When winds are calm, geostrophic currents associated with mesoscale ocean eddies transport Ganga‐Brahmaputra‐Meghna river water southward to the mooring, salinity falls, and the ocean mixed layer shallows to 1–10 m. During active (cloudy, windy) spells of quasi‐biweekly monsoon mode, directly wind‐forced surface currents carry river water away to the east and north, leading to increased salinity at the moorings, and rise of sea level by 0.1–0.5 m along the eastern and northern boundary of the bay. During July–August 2015, a shallow pool of low‐salinity river water lies in the northeastern bay. The amplitude of a 20‐day oscillation of sea surface temperature (SST) is two times larger within the fresh pool than in the saltier ocean to the west, although surface heat flux is nearly identical in the two regions. This is direct evidence that spatial‐temporal variations of BoB salinity influences sub‐seasonal SST variations, and possibly SST‐mediated monsoon air‐sea interaction. We study operator growth in a model of N(N − 1)/2 interacting Majorana fermions that live on the edges of a complete graph of N vertices. Terms in the Hamiltonian are proportional to the product of q fermions that live on the edges of cycles of length q. This model is a cartoon "matrix model": the interaction graph mimics that of a single-trace matrix model, which can be holographically dual to quantum gravity. We prove (non-perturbatively in 1/N and without averaging over any ensemble) that the scrambling time of this model is at least of order log N, consistent with the fast scrambling conjecture. Distributed temperature sensing (DTS) uses Raman scatter from laser light pulsed through an optical fiber to observe temperature along a cable. Temperature resolution across broad scales (seconds to many months, and centimeters to kilometers) make DTS an attractive oceanographic tool. Although DTS is an established technology, oceanographic DTS observations are rare since significant deployment, calibration, and operational challenges exist in dynamic oceanographic environments. Here, results from an experiment designed to address likely oceanographic DTS configuration, calibration, and data processing challenges provide guidance for oceanographic DTS applications. Temperature error due to suboptimal calibration under difficult deployment conditions is quantified for several common scenarios. Alternative calibration, analysis, and deployment techniques that help mitigate this error and facilitate successful DTS application in dynamic ocean conditions are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Linear and nonlinear internal waves are widespread phenomena with important implications for the ocean's ecology. Here, we review the biological impacts of non-breaking internal waves for three broad categories of organisms: sessile organisms, passive plankton, and depth-keeping plankton. We use heuristic simulations to contrast the effects of passing internal waves for each of these groups. In the case of irradiance, an isobaric quantity, light availability is only modulated for passive plankton. Wave-induced horizontal transport enhances this effect, because transport in the direction of wave propagation implies that passive plankton spend longer within each wave. This is true for both linear waves, where horizontal transport is due exclusively to Stokes drift, as well as for weakly nonlinear waves, where transport arises from both nonlinearity and Stokes drift. In the case of depth-keeping plankton, a similar effect is seen for isopycnal properties. In a simple example, where we set the vertical distribution of temperature to match that of density, wave-induced horizontal transport alters the overall water temperatures depth-keeping plankton are exposed to. These results emphasize that horizontal transport within internal waves is not only important to dispersal but also modulates the effects of wave-induced vertical disturbances on plankton. The land‐sea breeze is resonant with the inertial response of the ocean at the critical latitude of 30°N/S. 1‐D vertical numerical experiments were undertaken to study the key drivers of enhanced diapycnal mixing in coastal upwelling systems driven by diurnal‐inertial resonance near the critical latitude. The effect of the land boundary was implicitly included in the model through the "Craig approximation" for first‐order cross‐shore surface elevation gradient response. The model indicates that for shallow water depths (<∼100 m), bottom shear stresses must be accounted for in the formulation of the "Craig approximation," as they serve to enhance the cross‐shore surface elevation gradient response, while reducing shear and mixing at the thermocline. The model was able to predict the observed temperature and current features during an upwelling/mixing event in 60 m water depth in St Helena Bay (∼32.5°S, southern Benguela), indicating that the locally forced response to the land‐sea breeze is a key driver of diapycnal mixing over the event. Alignment of the subinertial Ekman transport with the surface inertial oscillation produces shear spikes at the diurnal‐inertial frequency; however their impact on mixing is secondary when compared with the diurnal‐inertial resonance phenomenon. The amplitude of the diurnal anticyclonic rotary component of the wind stress represents a good diagnostic for the prediction of diapycnal mixing due to diurnal‐inertial resonance. The local enhancement of this quantity over St Helena Bay provides strong evidence for the importance of the land‐sea breeze in contributing to primary production in this region through nutrient enrichment of the surface layer. Near latitudes of 30°N/S ubiquitous rotating ocean currents also have a daily frequency and therefore become enhanced by daily winds at these latitudes. The ocean currents result in vertical mixing of subsurface and surface water layers, bringing subsurface nutrients to the surface where they stimulate phytoplankton growth. In this study we use a simple model of the ocean (composed of the vertical dimension only) to study the key drivers of vertical mixing due to the land‐sea breeze. We show how vertical mixing is reduced in shallow water (<∼100 m) near the coast, where currents are slowed down by friction at the seabed. We find that vertical mixing can be predicted by a parameter computed from wind speed and direction over time. This parameter is shown to be enhanced over St Helena Bay on the west coast of South Africa, where phytoplankton blooms are known to be particularly prevalent. The results suggest that the land‐sea breeze is likely to be an important contributor to phytoplankton bloom development in this region. We prove non-perturbative bounds on the time evolution of the probability distribution of operator size in the q-local Sachdev–Ye–Kitaev model with N fermions for any even integer q > 2 and any positive even integer N > 2q. If the couplings in the Hamiltonian are independent and identically distributed Rademacher random variables, the infinite temperature many-body Lyapunov exponent is almost surely finite as N → ∞. In the limit q → ∞, N → ∞, and q6+δ/N → 0, the shape of the size distribution of a growing fermion, obtained by leading order perturbation calculations in 1/N and 1/q, is similar to a distribution that locally saturates our constraints. Coastal physical processes are essential for the cross‐shore transport of meroplanktonic larvae to their benthic adult habitats. To investigate these processes, we released a swarm of novel, trackable, subsurface vehicles, the Mini‐Autonomous Underwater Explorers (M‐AUEs), which we programmed to mimic larval depth‐keeping behavior. The M‐AUE swarm measured a sudden net onshore transport of 30–70 m over 15–20 min, which we investigated in detail. Here, we describe a novel transport mechanism of depth‐keeping plankton revealed by these observations. In situ measurements and models showed that, as a weakly nonlinear internal wave propagated through the swarm, it deformed surface‐intensified, along‐isopycnal background velocities downward, accelerating depth‐keeping organisms onshore. These higher velocities increased both the depth‐keepers' residence time in the wave and total cross‐shore displacement, leading to wave‐induced transports twice those of fully Lagrangian organisms and four times those associated with the unperturbed background currents. Our analyses also show that integrating velocity time series from virtual larvae or mimics moving with the flow yields both larger and more accurate transport estimates than integrating velocity time series obtained at a point (Eulerian). The increased cross‐shore transport of organisms capable of vertical swimming in this wave/background‐current system is mathematically analogous to the increase in onshore transport associated with horizontal swimming in highly nonlinear internal waves. However, the mechanism described here requires much weaker swimming speeds (mm s−1 vs. cm s−1) to achieve significant onshore transports, and meroplanktonic larvae only need to orient themselves vertically, not horizontally. An along-channel momentum budget is quantified in the near-field plume region of a controlled river flow entering Doubtful Sound, New Zealand. Observations include highly resolved density, velocity and turbulence, enabling a momentum budget to be constructed over a control volume. Estimates of internal stress (τ) were made from direct measurements of turbulence dissipation rates (ϵ) using vertical microstructure profiles. High flow speeds of the surface plume over 2 m s -1 and strong stratification (N2∼10-1 s -2) resulted in enhanced turbulence dissipation rates (ϵ>10-3 W kg -1) and internal stress (τ>10-2 m 2 s -2) at the base of the surface layer. Internal waves were observed propagating along the base of the plume, potentially released subsequent to a hydraulic jump in the initial 1 km downstream of the plume discharge point. The momentum flux divergence of these internal waves suggests that almost 15 % of the total plume momentum can be transported out of the system by wave radiation, therefore playing a crucial role in the redistribution of momentum within the near-field plume. Observations illustrate that the evolution of the momentum budget components vary between the distinct surface plume layer and the turbulent, shear-stratified interfacial layer. Within the surface plume, a momentum balance was achieved. The dynamical balance demonstrates that the deceleration of the plume, driven by along-channel advection, is controlled by turbulence stress from the plume discharge point to as far as 3 km downstream. In the interfacial layer, however, the momentum equation was dominated by the turbulence stress term and the balance was not closed. The lung achieves an efficient gas exchange between a complex non‐sterile atmosphere and the body via a delicate and extensive epithelial surface, with high efficiency because of elastic deformation allowing for an increase and decrease in volume during the process of breathing and because of an extensive vasculature which aids rapid gas diffusion. The lungs' large surface area exposes the organ to a continual risk of damage from pathogens, toxins or irritants; however, lung damage can be rapidly healed via regenerative processes that restore its structure and function. In response to sustained and extensive damage, the lung is healed via a non‐regenerative process resulting in scar tissue which locally stiffens its structure, which over time leads to a serious loss of lung function and to increasing morbidities. This review discusses what is known about the factors which influence whether a lung is healed by regeneration or repair and what potential new therapeutic approaches may positively influence lung healing. The meroplanktonic larvae of many invertebrate and vertebrate species rely on physical transport to move them across the shelf to their adult habitats. One potential mechanism for cross‐shore larval transport is Stokes drift in internal waves. Here, we develop theory to quantify the Stokes velocities of neutrally buoyant and depth‐keeping organisms in linear internal waves in shallow water. We apply the analyses to theoretical and measured internal wave fields, and compare results with a numerical model. Near the surface and bottom boundaries, both neutrally buoyant and depth‐keeping organisms were transported in the direction of the wave's phase propagation. However, neutrally buoyant organisms were transported in the opposite direction of the wave's phase at mid depths, while depth‐keeping organisms had zero net transport there. Weakly depth‐keeping organisms had Stokes drifts between the perfectly depth‐keeping and neutrally buoyant organisms. For reasonable wave amplitudes and phase speeds, organisms would experience horizontal Stokes speeds of several centimeters per second—or a few kilometers per day in a constant wave field. With onshore‐polarized internal waves, Stokes drift in internal waves presents a predictable mechanism for onshore transport of meroplanktonic larvae and other organisms near the surface, and offshore transport at mid depths. We revisit the theory of strongly correlated quantum matter perturbed by Harris-marginal random-field disorder, using the simplest holographic model. We argue that for weak disorder, the ground state of the theory is not Lifshitz invariant with a non-trivial disorder-dependent dynamical exponent, as previously found. The North Equatorial Current (NEC) transports water westward around numerous islands and over submarine ridges in the western Pacific. As the currents flow over and around this topography, the central question is: how are momentum and energy in the incident flow transferred to finer scales? At the south point of Peleliu Island, Palau, a combination of strong NEC currents and tides flow over a steep, submarine ridge. Energy cascades suddenly from the NEC via the 1 km scale lee waves and wake eddies to turbulence. These submesoscale wake eddies are observed every tidal cycle, and also in model simulations. As the flow in each eddy recirculates and encounters the incident flow again, the associated front contains interleaving temperature (T) structures with 1-10 m horizontal extent. Turbulent dissipation (e) exceeds 10-5 W kg-1 along this tilted and strongly sheared front. A train of such submesoscale eddies can be seen at least 50 km downstream. Internal lee waves with 1 km wavelengths are also observed over the submarine ridge. The mean form drag exerted by the waves (i.e., upward transport of eastward momentum) of about 1 Pa is sufficient to substantially reduce the westward NEC, if not for other forcing, and is greater than the turbulent bottom drag of about 0.1 Pa. The effect on the incident flow of the form drag from only one submarine ridge may be similar to the bottom drag along the entire coastline of Palau. The observed e is also consistent with local dissipation of lee wave energy. The circulation, including lee waves and wake eddies, was simulated by a datadriven primitive equation ocean model. The model estimates of the form drags exerted by pressure drops across the submarine ridge and due to wake eddies were found to be about 10 times higher than the lee wave and turbulent bottom drags. An along-channel momentum budget is quantified in the near-field plume region of a controlled river flow entering Doubtful Sound, New Zealand. Observations include highly resolved density, velocity and turbulence, enabling a momentum budget to be constructed over a control volume. Estimates of internal stress (τ) were made from direct measurements of turbulence dissipation rates (ε) using vertical microstructure profiles. High flow speeds of the surface plume over 2 m s-1 and strong stratification (N² ~ 10-1 s-2) resulted in enhanced turbulence dissipation rates (ε > 10-3 W kg-1) and internal stress (τ > 10-2 m² s-2) at the base of surface layer. An observed transition from a supercritical to sub-critical flow regime in the initial 1 km indicates the presence of an internal hydraulic jump and the subsequent release of internal gravity waves. The momentum flux divergence of these internal waves suggests that almost 15% of the total plume momentum can be transported out of the system by wave radiation, therefore playing a crucial role in the redistribution of momentum within the near-field plume. Observations illustrate that the evolution of the momentum budget components vary between the distinct surface plume layer and the turbulent, shear-stratified interfacial layer. Within the surface plume, a momentum balance was achieved. The dynamical balance demonstrates that the deceleration of the plume, driven by along-channel advection, is controlled by turbulence stress from the plume discharge point to as far as 3 km downstream. In the interfacial layer however, the momentum equation was dominated by the turbulence stress term and the balance was not closed. Near-inertial waves (NIWs) are often an energetic component of the internal wave field on windy continental shelves. The effect of baroclinic geostrophic currents, which introduce both relative vorticity and baroclinicity, on NIWs is not well understood. Relative vorticity affects the resonant frequency feff, while both relative vorticity and baroclinicity modify the minimum wave frequency of freely propagating waves ωmin. On a windy and narrow shelf, we observed wind-forced oscillations that generated NIWs where feff was less than the Coriolis frequency f. If everywhere feff > f then NIWs were generated where ωmin < f and feff was smallest. The background current not only affected the location of generation, but also the NIWs' propagation direction. The estimated NIW energy fluxes show that NIWs propagated predominantly toward the equator because ωmin > f on the continental slope for the entire sample period. In addition to being laterally trapped on the shelf, we observed vertically trapped and intensified NIWs that had a frequency ω within the anomalously low-frequency band (i.e., ωmin < ω < feff), which only exists if the baroclinicity is nonzero. We observed two periods when ωmin < f on the shelf, but the relative vorticity was positive (i.e., feff > f) for one of these periods. The process of NIW propagation remained consistent with the local ωmin, and not feff, emphasizing the importance of baroclinicity on the NIW dynamics. We conclude that windy shelves with baroclinic background currents are likely to have energetic NIWs, but the current and seabed will adjust the spatial distribution and energetics of these NIWs. Using 18 days of field observations, we investigate the diurnal (D1) frequency wave dynamics on the Tasmanian eastern continental shelf. At this latitude, the D1 frequency is subinertial and separable from the highly energetic near-inertial motion. We use a linear coastal-trapped wave (CTW) solution with the observed background current, stratification, and shelf bathymetry to determine the modal structure of the first three resonant CTWs. We associate the observed D1 velocity with a superimposed mode-zero and mode-one CTW, with mode one dominating mode zero. Both the observed and mode-one D1 velocity was intensified near the thermocline, with stronger velocities occurring when the thermocline stratification was stronger and/or the thermocline was deeper (up to the shelfbreak depth). The CTW modal structure and amplitude varied with the background stratification and alongshore current, with no spring–neap relationship evident for the observed 18 days. Within the surface and bottom Ekman layers on the shelf, the observed velocity phase changed in the cross-shelf and/or vertical directions, inconsistent with an alongshore propagating CTW. In the near-surface and near-bottom regions, the linear CTW solution also did not match the observed velocity, particularly within the bottom Ekman layer. Boundary layer processes were likely causing this observed inconsistency with linear CTW theory. Given a quantum many-body system with few-body interactions, how rapidly can quantum information be hidden during time evolution? The fast-scrambling conjecture is that the time to thoroughly mix information among N degrees of freedom grows at least logarithmically in N. We derive this inequality for generic quantum systems at infinite temperature, bounding the scrambling time by a finite decay time of local quantum correlations at late times. Using Lieb–Robinson bounds, generalized Sachdev–Ye–Kitaev models, and random unitary circuits, we propose that a logarithmic scrambling time can be achieved in most quantum systems with sparse connectivity. These models also elucidate how quantum chaos is not universally related to scrambling: We construct random few-body circuits with infinite Lyapunov exponent but logarithmic scrambling time. We discuss analogies between quantum models on graphs and quantum black holes and suggest methods to experimentally study scrambling with as many as 100 sparsely connected quantum degrees of freedom. Purpose: Obesity may alter mononuclear phagocyte system (MPS) function and the pharmacology and efficacy of nanoparticles therapies, such as PEGylated liposomal doxorubicin (PLD). We aimed to evaluate the relationships between hormone and chemokine mediators of MPS function and the pharmacokinetic (PK) exposure of PLD in obese and normal weight patients with ovarian and endometrial cancer.Methods: Hormone and chemokine mediators in obese and normal weight ovarian and endometrial cancer patients were measured. A separate pharmacology study was performed that evaluated the relationship between serum hormone concentrations, MPS function, and PK disposition of PLD in refractory ovarian cancer patients.Results: Univariate analysis revealed a significant relationship between serum estradiol and body mass index (OR 8.64, 95% CI 2.67-28.0, p < 0.001). Estrone and testosterone concentrations were positively correlated with MPS function (ρ = 0.57 and 0.53, p = 0.14 and 0.18, respectively) and inversely correlated with PLD PK exposure (ρ = - 0.75 and - 0.76, respectively, p = 0.02 for both).Conclusions: Higher MPS function resulting in reduced PLD exposure is a potential mechanism for reduced efficacy of PLD and other nanoparticles observed in obese patients with cancer.
