Until recently, no disease-specific health-related quality of life (HRQoL) questionnaire existed for pediatric traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). In this revalidation study, the psychometric properties and the validity of the 35-item QOLIBRI-KID/ADO questionnaire in its final German version were examined in 300 children and adolescents. It is the first self-reported TBI-specific tool for measuring pediatric HRQoL in individuals aged between 8 and 17 years. The six-factor model fits the data adequately. The questionnaire's internal consistency was excellent for the total score and satisfactory to excellent for the scale scores. Intraclass correlations indicated good test–retest reliability, and the measure's construct validity was supported by the overlap between the QOLBRI-KID/ADO and the PedsQL, which measures generic HRQoL. The discriminant validity tests showed that older children and girls reported a significantly lower HRQoL than comparison groups, and this was also true of children who were anxious or depressed, or who suffered from post-concussion symptoms, replicating the results of the questionnaire's first developmental study. Our results suggest that the QOLIBRI-KID/ADO is a reliable and valid multidimensional tool that can be used together with the adult version in clinical contexts and research to measure disease-specific HRQoL after pediatric TBI throughout a person's life. The immersed boundary (IB) method is a mathematical framework for fluid–structure interaction problems (FSI) that was originally developed to simulate flows around heart valves. Direct comparison of FSI simulations around heart valves against experimental data is challenging, however, due to the difficulty of performing robust and effective simulations, the complications of modeling a specific physical experiment, and the need to acquire experimental data that is directly comparable to simulation data. Such comparators are a necessary precursor for further formal validation studies of FSI simulations involving heart valves. In this work, we performed physical experiments of flow through a pulmonary valve in an in vitro pulse duplicator, and measured the corresponding velocity field using 4D flow MRI (4-dimensional flow magnetic resonance imaging). We constructed a computer model of this pulmonary artery setup, including modeling valve geometry and material properties via a technique called design-based elasticity, and simulated flow through it with the IB method. The simulated flow fields showed excellent qualitative agreement with experiments, excellent agreement on integral metrics, and reasonable relative error in the entire flow domain and on slices of interest. The role of spirituality in organizations has received increasing attention over recent years. The purpose of this conceptual paper is to take up this shift and develop the foundations for an alternative approach to knowledge management: Spiritual Knowledge Management. A key question in spirituality concerns the unfolding of the identity (of an organization) or the self toward a "higher end" or purpose. We propose the concept of the phronetically enacted self (understood here both in an individual and an organizational sense) that helps us conceive of how this unfolding can be achieved in a thriving and sustainable manner. The self is conceptualized as a highly dynamic and emergent "entity" that is grounded in a continuous process of becoming and of transitions transforming a state of potentiality into a state of actuality and fulfillment. Insights from the theory of spirituality, enactive cognitive science, the theory of potentials/possibility studies, phronetic organizations, and resonance theory lead us to a novel understanding of knowledge-driven organizations embodying a spirituality-based and, as a consequence, (regenerative) sustainable approach. Betaine (Bet) is a pure zwitterion with an extraordinarily large dipole moment, which allows it to form stable clusters in the gas phase of the form X±BetN, where X± is a positive or negative ion. We show here that such clusters have a prominent magic number at N = 4 for all X± ions used in this work. Nevertheless, we observe a marked difference in the fragmentation pattern of anionic and cationic clusters: while cationic clusters fragment by evaporating one betaine monomer at a time, fragmentation of anionic clusters is through fission resulting in the emission of one or several betaine molecules. Theoretical calculations show that charged betaine tetramers have a square like structure with the central ion lying above the cluster plane and explain the difference in fragmentation patterns as a result of the charge distribution within the betaine molecule. In healthy adults, autobiographical memories (AMs) evoked by music appear to have unique cognitive characteristics that set them apart from AMs evoked by other cues. If this is the case, we might expect music cues to alleviate AM deficits in clinical disorders. This systematic review examines music‐evoked autobiographical memories (MEAMs) in clinical populations, focusing on cognitive characteristics, and whether MEAMs differ from AMs evoked by other stimuli. We identified 15 studies featuring participants with Alzheimer's disease (AD), behavioral variant — Frontotemporal dementia (bv‐FTD), acquired brain damage, and depression. We found that music evokes AMs in these disorders, and that familiar music was more likely to evoke AMs. Compared with healthy controls, AD participants had a relative advantage for MEAMs over picture‐evoked AMs. People with damage to the medial prefrontal cortex showed preserved access to MEAMs in terms of frequency, but a relative disadvantage regarding the episodic richness for MEAMs, but not for memories cued by pictures, compared to controls. Participants with bv‐FTD had fewer AMs evoked after both music and pictures than healthy controls. Across conditions, MEAMs were generally specific and retrieved fast, suggesting little retrieval effort. MEAMs were also positive, except in depression, where as many negative as positive AMs were produced. These findings suggest several underlying cognitive and affective mechanisms of MEAMs, including anxiety reduction, increased fluency, music‐evoked emotions, reminiscence, and involuntary retrieval, and that these might be moderated by musical abilities and memory for music. Estrogen-dependent breast cancers rely on a constant supply of estrogens and expression of estrogen receptors. Local biosynthesis, by aromatase in breast adipose fibroblasts (BAFs), is their most important source for estrogens. Triple-negative breast cancers (TNBC) rely on other growth-promoting signals, including those from the Wnt pathway. In this study, we explored the hypothesis that Wnt signaling alters the proliferation of BAFs, and is involved in regulation of aromatase expression in BAFs. Conditioned medium (CM) from TNBC cells and WNT3a consistently increased BAF growth, and reduced aromatase activity up to 90%, by suppression of the aromatase promoter I.3/II region. Database searches identified three putative Wnt-responsive elements (WREs) in the aromatase promoter I.3/II. In luciferase reporter gene assays, promoter I.3/II activity was inhibited by overexpression of full-length T-cell factor (TCF)-4 in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes, which served as a model for BAFs. Full-length lymphoid enhancer-binding factor (LEF)-1 increased the transcriptional activity. However, TCF-4 binding to WRE1 in the aromatase promoter, was lost after WNT3a stimulation in immunoprecipitation-based in vitro DNA-binding assays, and in chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP). In vitro DNA-binding assays, ChIP, and Western blotting revealed a WNT3a-dependent switch of nuclear LEF-1 isoforms towards a truncated variant, whereas β-catenin levels remained unchanged. This LEF-1 variant revealed dominant negative properties, and most likely recruited enzymes involved in heterochromatin formation. In addition, WNT3a induced the replacement of TCF-4 by the truncated LEF-1 variant, on WRE1 of the aromatase promoter I.3/II. The mechanism described here may be responsible for the loss of aromatase expression predominantly associated with TNBC. Tumors with (strong) expression of Wnt ligands actively suppress aromatase expression in BAFs. Consequently a reduced estrogen supply could favor the growth of estrogen-independent tumor cells, which consequently would make estrogen receptors dispensable. Bicuspid aortic valve is the most common congenital heart defect, affecting 1–2% of the global population. Patients with bicuspid valves frequently develop dilation and aneurysms of the ascending aorta. Both hemodynamic and genetic factors are believed to contribute to dilation, yet the precise mechanism underlying this progression remains under debate. Controlled comparisons of hemodynamics in patients with different forms of bicuspid valve disease are challenging because of confounding factors, and simulations offer the opportunity for direct and systematic comparisons. Using fluid–structure interaction simulations, we simulate flows through multiple aortic valve models in a patient-specific geometry. The aortic geometry is based on a healthy patient with no known aortic or valvular disease, which allows us to isolate the hemodynamic consequences of changes to the valve alone. Four fully-passive, elastic model valves are studied: a tricuspid valve and bicuspid valves with fusion of the left- and right-, right- and non-, and non- and left-coronary cusps. The resulting tricuspid flow is relatively uniform, with little secondary or reverse flow, and little to no pressure gradient across the valve. The bicuspid cases show localized jets of forward flow, excess streamwise momentum, elevated secondary and reverse flow, and clinically significant levels of stenosis. Localized high flow rates correspond to locations of dilation observed in patients, with the location related to which valve cusps are fused. Thus, the simulations support the hypothesis that chronic exposure to high local flow contributes to localized dilation and aneurysm formation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Alkali metal atoms and small alkali clusters are classic heliophobes and when in contact with liquid helium they reside in a dimple on the surface. Here we showthat alkalis can be induced to submerge into liquid helium when a highly polarizable co-solute, C60, is added to a helium nanodroplet. Evidence is presented that shows that all sodium clusters, and probably single Na atoms, enter the helium droplet in the presence of C60. Even clusters of cesium, an extreme heliophobe, dissolve in liquid helium when C60 is added. The sole exception is atomic Cs, which remains at the surface. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Unilateral spatial neglect (USN) is a disorder characterized by the failure to report, respond to, or orient toward the contralateral side of space to a brain lesion. Current assessment methods often fail to discover milder forms, cannot differentiate between unilateral spatial neglect subtypes and lack ecological validity. There is also a need for treatment methods that target subtypes. Immersive virtual reality (VR) systems in combination with eye-tracking (ET) have the potential to overcome these shortcomings, by providing more naturalistic environments and tasks, with sensitive and detailed measures. This systematic review examines the state of the art of research on these technologies as applied in the assessment and treatment of USN. As we found no studies that combined immersive VR and ET, we reviewed these approaches individually. The review of VR included seven articles, the ET review twelve. The reviews revealed promising results. (1) All included studies found significant group-level differences for several USN measures. In addition, several studies found asymmetric behavior in VR and ET tasks for patients who did not show signs of USN in conventional tests. Particularly promising features were multitasking in complex VR environments and detailed eye-movement analysis. (2) No VR and only a few ET studies attempted to differentiate USN subtypes, although the technologies appeared appropriate. One ET study grouped USN participants using individual heatmaps, and another differentiated between subtypes on drawing tasks. Regarding (3) ecological validity, although no studies tested the prognostic validity of their assessment methods, VR and ET studies utilized naturalistic tasks and stimuli reflecting everyday situations. Technological characteristics, such as the field of view and refresh rate of the head-mounted displays, could be improved, though, to improve ecological validity. We found (4) no studies that utilized VR or ET technologies for USN treatment up until the search date of the 26th of February 2020. In conclusion, VR-ET-based systems show great potential for USN assessment. VR-ET holds great promise for treatment, for example, by monitoring behavior and adapting and tailoring to the individual person's needs and abilities. This paper presents a new method for modeling the mechanics of the aortic valve and simulates its interaction with blood. As much as possible, the model construction is based on first principles, but such that the model is consistent with experimental observations. We require that tension in the leaflets must support a pressure, then derive a system of partial differential equations governing its mechanical equilibrium. The solution to these differential equations is referred to as the predicted loaded configuration; it includes the loaded leaflet geometry, fiber orientations and tensions needed to support the prescribed load. From this configuration, we derive a reference configuration and constitutive law. In fluid-structure interaction simulations with the immersed boundary method, the model seals reliably under physiological pressures and opens freely over multiple cardiac cycles. Further, model closure is robust to extreme hypo- and hypertensive pressures. Then, exploiting the unique features of this model construction, we conduct experiments on reference configurations, constitutive laws and gross morphology. These experiments suggest the following conclusions: (1) The loaded geometry, tensions and tangent moduli primarily determine model function. (2) Alterations to the reference configuration have little effect if the predicted loaded configuration is identical. (3) The leaflets must have sufficiently nonlinear material response to function over a variety of pressures. (4) Valve performance is highly sensitive to free edge length and leaflet height. These conclusions suggest appropriate gross morphology and material properties for the design of prosthetic aortic valves. Sputtering from plasma-facing surfaces upon particle impact can limit the lifetime of components in fusion devices, especially in the diverter region. Atomistic simulations of the processes associated with plasma–wall interactions allow for a detailed analysis of sputtering, reflection and adsorption. Most former works of beryllium sputtering by hydrogen isotopes were aimed mostly on the sputtering yield. We investigate the influence of impact energy and angle on sputtering, and analyze these quantities also for the outgoing particle. We model the sputtering by non-cumulative molecular dynamics simulations with a large number of trajectories for the various parameters. The underlying forces and energies are obtained from high-dimensional neural networks fitted to density functional calculations. We find a good agreement with the previously reported sputtering yields for perpendicular impact and a qualitative accordance with experimental data. In detail, the sputtering yield increases with increasing impact energy for angles of incidence larger than 45° with respect to the surface normal, while smaller angles show a maximal yield up to 100 eV. In cases where D reflection rather than sputtering occurs, a similar pattern is found for all angles, with the maximal reflection rate at 80°. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

After a general discussion of neural networks potential energy functions and their standing within the various approaches of representing the potential energy function of a system, we describe a new interface between the open source atomistic library aenet of Artrith and Urban and the DL_POLY 4 code. As an application example, the training of a neural network for liquid water is described and the network is used in a molecular dynamics simulation. We give a simple description of quantum states near the dissociation threshold of deep interatomic potentials. The influence of the potential tail is separated from effects due to the interaction at short distances. We present a general formalism which is valid for weakly bound and low-energy continuum states, both for vanishing and non-vanishing angular momentum. Its applicability is demonstrated for the example of the electronic ground state of the strontium dimer 88Sr2. With an appropriate choice of the potential tail that includes higher-order dispersion coefficients, all short-range effects are incorporated via the threshold quantum number vD and one further parameter accounting for residual short-range effects. The lemurs of Madagascar (Primates: Lemuriformes) are a monophyletic group that has lived in isolation from other primates for about 50 million years. Lemurs have diversified into species with diverse daily activity patterns and correspondingly different visual adaptations. We assessed the arrangements of retinal cone and rod photoreceptors in six nocturnal, three cathemeral and two diurnal lemur species and quantified different parameters in six of the species. The analysis revealed lower cone densities and higher rod densities in the nocturnal than in the cathemeral and diurnal species. The photoreceptor densities in the diurnal Propithecus verreauxi indicate a less "diurnal" retina than found in other diurnal primates. Immunolabeling for cone opsins showed the presence of both middle‐to‐longwave sensitive (M/L) and shortwave sensitive (S) cones in most species, indicating at least dichromatic color vision. S cones were absent in Allocebus trichotis and Cheirogaleus medius, indicating cone monochromacy. In the Microcebus species, the S cones had an inverse topography with very low densities in the central retina and highest densities in the peripheral retina. The S cones in the other species and the M/L cones in all species had a conventional topography with peak densities in the central area. With the exception of the cathemeral Eulemur species, the eyes of all studied taxa, including the diurnal Propithecus, possessed a tapetum lucidum, a feature only found among nocturnal and crepuscular mammals. Retinal cone photoreceptor arrangements were studied in 11 species of Malagasy lemurs. The diversity of cone patterns ranges from relatively high cone densities and the presence of medium‐to‐longwave‐sensitive (green) as well as shortwave‐sensitive cones (magenta) in the diurnal sifaka (top) to low cone densities and an absence of shortwave‐sensitive cones in the nocturnal dwarf lemurs (bottom). Um die Treibhausgasemissionen von Nutzfahrzeugen kurzfristig zu reduzieren, stellen nicht-technische Maßnahmen, wie zum Beispiel das Fahren mit reduzierter Höchstgeschwindigkeit auf Autobahnen, eine Option dar. Obwohl dadurch der Kraftstoffverbrauch gesenkt werden kann, sind aus betriebswirtschaftlicher Perspektive auch die unmittelbaren Auswirkungen auf die Einsatzzeiten der Fahrzeuge und des Fahrpersonals zu berücksichtigen. Dementsprechend wird in dieser Dissertation ein integriertes Modell entwickelt, das aus einem physikbasierten Kraftstoffverbrauchsmodell und einem logistisch-betriebswirtschaftlichen Fahrtenkettenmodell zusammengesetzt ist. Damit werden die jeweils resultierenden Mehr- oder Minderkosten von verschiedenen Tempolimits (z. B. 70 km/h auf Autobahnen) für Nutzfahrzeuge im deutschen Straßengüterverkehr berechnet, um die Wirtschaftlichkeit der Maßnahme und deren Kosteneffizienz bezüglich der vermeidbaren Treibhausgasemissionen (in Euro je Tonne CO 2 {\mathrm{CO}_{2}}) zu bestimmen. In order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from utility vehicles in the short term, non-technical measures, such as driving at reduced maximum velocity on motorways, are an option. Although, fuel consumption is decreased thereby, also the direct effects on operation time of vehicles and drivers, respectively, have to be taken into account from an economic perspective. Therefore, an integrated model, which is composed of a physically-based fuel consumption model and a logistic-economic trip chain model, is developed within this dissertation. By that, the overall costs and savings, respectively, which correspond to different speed limits for utility vehicles in the German road freight transport (for instance 70 km per hour on motorways), are calculated in order to determine the cost efficiency of avoidable greenhouse gas emissions (in Euro per ton of CO 2 {\mathrm{CO}_{2}}). We report an experimental study of water clusters as guests in interactions with clusters of adamantane (Ad) as hosts that occur in doped helium droplets at extremely low temperatures. Separate experiments with pure water as dopant showed ready formation of a distribution of water clusters (H2O)mH+ that peaks at m = 11 and extends beyond m = 100 with local maxima at m = 4, 11, 21, 28 and 30 with (H2O)21H+ being the most anomalous and showing the greatest stability with respect to clusters immediately adjacent in water content. When adamantane is also added as a dopant, extensive hydration is seen in the formation of water/adamantane clusters, (H2O)mAdn+; magic number clusters (H2O)21Adn+ are seen for all the adamantane clusters. Other magic numbers for water clusters attached to adamantane, (H2O)mAdn+, are as for pristine protonated water, with m = 28 and m = 30. The icosahedral shell closure of pure adamantane at n = 13 and 19 appears to be preserved with (H2O)21 replacing one adamantane. (H2O)21Ad12+ and (H2O)21Ad18+ stand out in intensity and demonstrate the interplay of magic number water clusters with magic number adamantane clusters, observed perhaps for the first time in gas-phase cluster chemistry. Purpose Previous studies showed that combining learning based on experiences in the past with learning from an envisioned future scenario results in more innovative and radical ideas, as well as in a higher number of covered content domains. However, currently there is no holistic learning theory that integrates both sources of learning. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate whether it is possible to extend Bateson’s theory of learning, to link these two learning sources in one coherent framework.Design/methodology/approach To answer this research question, the author draws on learning from an envisioned future, and tries to link it with the most important levels of learning in Bateson’s framework.Findings This paper contributes to the literature by attempting to link the important but still underexplored aspect of “learning from the future” to the complex and multifaceted work of Bateson. Given the fact that both sources of learning and experience yield a great potential to create new knowledge, this study outlines a possibility to include both sources into one learning theory.Research limitations/implications This work provides the basis for further research in building a general holistic theory of learning to learn.Practical implications On the individual level, the proposed approach can be easily applied with systemic coaching processes in general and coaching processes in the fields of developing an individual vision in particular. In the field of organizational learning, the awareness of different learning sources and different learning modes on the one hand and knowledge about the implementation of enabling spaces (PE-ba, FE-ba) to support these various learning modes on the other hand help organizations to generate new knowledge and create innovative and sustainable solutions, products and services.Originality/value To the best of the author’s knowledge, it is the first theoretical work that describes the integration of learning from past experiences and learning from future experiences in a methodological way. Introduction: SETBP1 mutations have been established as a diagnostic marker in myeloid malignancies and are associated with inferior survival. Since there is limited data on their clinical impact and stability during disease progression, we sought to investigate the relationship between SETBP1 mutations and disease evolution. Methods: Bidirectional Sanger sequencing of the SETBP1 gene was performed for 442 unselected patients with World Health Organization (WHO) defined myeloid disorders. Follow-up analysis was performed on samples from 123/442 patients to investigate SETBP1 mutation dynamics. Targeted deep next-generation sequencing for a panel of 30 leukemia-associated genes was established to study SETBP1 cooperating mutations. Results: 10/442 patients (2.3%) had SETBP1 hotspot mutations (MDS/MPN, n = 7, sAML, n = 3), whereas four patients (1%) had SETBP1 non-hotspot mutations (MPN, n = 1; MDS, n = 2; sAML, n = 1). The median overall survival for patients with SETBP1 hotspot mutations, SETBP1 non-hotspot mutations, and SETBP1 wild type was 14 (range 0-31), 50 (range 0-71), and 47 months (range 0-402), respectively. In Kaplan-Meier analysis, SETBP1 hotspot mutations were significantly associated with reduced overall survival compared to SETBP1 non-hotspot mutations and the SETBP1 wild type ( p < 0.001). All 10 patients with SETBP1 hotspot mutations died from relapse or disease progression. Three of four patients with SETBP1 non-hotspot mutations are alive with stable disease. Cooperating CSF3R and TET2 mutations were most frequently observed in patients with SETBP1 hotspot mutations. Conclusions: Patients with SETBP1 hotspot mutations suffered from aggressive disease with rapid evolution and inferior overall survival. Patients with SETBP1 non-hotspot mutations had less aggressive disease and a more favorable prognosis. Diagnostic screens for SETBP1 hotspot mutations may help identifying this dismal patient group and treat them in multicenter clinical studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The spin filter capability of a (0,8) armchair graphene nanoribbon with Fe atoms at substitutional sites is investigated by density functional theory in combination with the non-equilibrium Green's function technique. For specific arrangements, a high degree of spin polarisation is achieved. These include a single substitution at an edge position or double substitution in the central sector of the transmission element. The possibility of switching between majority and minority spin polarisation by changing the double substitution geometry is predicted. Including the bias dependence of the transmission function proves to be essential for correct representation of the spin-resolved current-voltage profiles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Enthalpies and free energies of reaction for small neutral and charged beryllium deuterides BeD, BeD, and BeD that have been calculated are reported for a temperature range of 0 K to 1000 K. We discuss probable dissociation channels and possible ways of producing BeD by localizing the relevant transition states and by calculating corresponding rate constants. BeD and BeD are found to be the most stable ones among the considered compounds. BeD and $$ {\mathrm{BeD}}_2^{+} $$ are more likely to decompose into Be + D than into BeD + D. The metastable BeD and $$ {\mathrm{BeD}}_3^{+} $$ predominantly decompose into BeD + D. In light of our results on the reaction energetics, we can interpret the pathways for production of BeD via BeD and BeD intermediates observed in molecular dynamics simulations. Needs that are shared by members of an organization can trigger an organizational learning process. To a large extent, needs are implicitly anchored in organizations and people can hardly articulate them. In this article, we present Bewextra, a method that allows for identifying hidden needs in organizations. Thereby, we trigger a knowledge conversion process, which is similar to Nonaka's SECI-spiral. In two case studies, we present how our Bewextra-process is applied to projects in educational contexts in Austria. In a first case study, we show that a combination of learning from past and future experiences extend the scope of the overall outcome. Since learning from future experiences requires a distinct environment (enabling spaces), we present a second case study. We show, both experimentally and theoretically, that the adsorption of CO2 is sensitive to charge on a capturing model carbonaceous surface. In the experiment we doped superfluid helium droplets with C60 and CO2 and exposed them to ionising free electrons. Both positively and negatively charged C60(CO2)n+/− cluster ion distributions are observed using a high-resolution mass spectrometer and they show remarkable and reproducible anomalies in intensities that are strongly dependent on the charge. The highest adsorption capacity is seen with C60+. Complementary density functional theory calculations and molecular dynamics simulations provided insight into the nature of the interaction of charged C60 with CO2 as well as trends in the packing of C60+ and C60−. The quadrupole moment of CO2 itself was found to be decisive in determining the charge dependence of the observed adsorption features. Innovation processes require organizations to transcend current boundaries. These include not only technological as well as social limitations but -above all- the way we address the future. We are used to face the future with our existing knowledge and experiences from the past. This strategy, however, can hardly lead to knowledge off the beaten path. We therefore suggest a new learning approach for organizations, which enables to literally envision a desired future scenario and thereby, allows for the creation of radical new knowledge. We argue that the created knowledge yields a higher degree of novelty and radicalness. Along with an enhanced theory of learning including learning from the future, we present our empirical findings from comparing the outputs of Learning from an Envisioned Future and learning from the past. For this purpose, we use data from two organizational learning projects; one, which was conducted with a high school in Austria and another one, which was conducted with members of the Austrian Economic Chamber. Our findings from both case studies suggest that Learning from an Envisioned Future does produce significantly more paradigm challenging knowledge compared to the output gained from conventional learning from past experiences. Pthread-style multithreaded programs feature rich thread communication mechanisms, such as shared variables, signals, and broadcasts. In this article, we consider the automated verification of such programs where an unknown number of threads execute a given finite-data procedure in parallel. Such procedures are typically obtained as predicate abstractions of recursion-free source code written in C or Java. Many safety problems over finite-data replicated multithreaded programs are decidable via a reduction to the coverability problem in certain types of well-ordered infinite-state transition systems. On the other hand, in full generality, this problem is Ackermann-hard, which seems to rule out efficient algorithmic treatment. We present a novel, sound, and complete yet empirically efficient solution. Our approach is to judiciously widen the original set of coverability targets by configurations that involve fewer threads and are thus easier to decide, and whose exploration may well be sufficient: if they turn out uncoverable, so are the original targets. To soften the impact of "bad guesses"-configurations that turn out coverable-the exploration is accompanied by a parallel engine that generates coverable configurations; none of these is ever selected for widening. Its job being merely to prevent bad widening choices, such an engine need not be complete for coverability analysis, which enables a range of existing partial (e.g., nonterminating) techniques.We present extensive experiments on multithreaded C programs, including device driver code from FreeBSD, Solaris, and Linux distributions. Physisorption on graphite, graphene, nanotubes, and other graphitic structures has been the subject of numerous studies, partly driven by interest in the nature of order in two-dimensional systems, their phase transitions, and the use of graphitic scaffolds for reversible storage of hydrogen at high volumetric density and low mass. In contrast, physisorption on individual fullerenes or small aggregates of fullerenes has remained largely unexplored, last but not least, because of technical challenges. A summary of recent progress in identifying specific adsorption sites on positively charged C60, C70, and their aggregates is given in this Minireview. Adsorption energies and storage capacities for helium, hydrogen, methane, oxygen, nitrogen, water, and ammonia are determined. Mass spectrometric data reveal the formation of a commensurate phase in which all hollow sites of C60 or C70 are occupied. This phase is identified for all nonpolar molecules, including oxygen, which does not form a commensurate phase on planar graphite. The polar molecules, on the other hand, do not wet fullerenes and they do not form this commensurate phase. A hierarchy of other distinct adsorption sites are identified for nonpolar molecules, namely, groove sites for fullerene dimers and beyond, and dimple sites for fullerene trimers and beyond. Furthermore, evidence is presented for the preferential adsorption of hydrogen and methane in registered sites on fullerene dimers. The interpretation of experimental data that merely count the number of preferred adsorption sites is aided by molecular dynamics simulations, which utilize interaction potentials derived from ab initio calculations to determine adsorption energies.
