The article provides an overview of 67 articles published in "International Journal of Media and Information Literacy" in 2021-2022. The articles' authors are scholars from Algeria, Chile, Czech Republic, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Poland, Ukraine, Russia, Slovakia and USA. Main areas of research during the pandemic are identified. Thematic focuses of articles directly related to COVID-19 are analyzed. The main results of research on the impact of the pandemic on the educational system, social relations, business, politics and a number of other areas are summarized. Particular attention is paid to the recommendations formulated by the authors to combat the manifestations and consequences of coronavirus in the field of pedagogy, interpersonal relations, management and working activity. It is concluded that, in general, many authors of articles reacted promptly and adequately to the changed realities. An assumption is made about a possible change in attitude to the complex of knowledge, skills and abilities associated with media and information literacy and expansion of the structure and scope of these types of literacy in future. OBJECTIVE Investigation of the impact of the emotional intelligence and empathy of senior executives (managers, heads of clinics) on the professional satisfaction of the healthcare staff at the 251 Hellenic Air Force General Hospital. METHOD A quantitative survey was carried out on a sample of 100 healthcare professionals (20 managers, heads of clinics, and 80 medical and nursing staff) at the 251 Hellenic Air Force General Hospital. The instruments used were the Greek versions of two standardized, self-completed questionnaires: The Emotional Competence Inventory (ECI) and the Job Satisfaction Survey (JSS). The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software, version 21.0 was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS The analysis results showed high levels of emotional intelligence in the managers and heads of clinics, according to their scores on most of the scales of the ECI, with managers recording a higher mean score on the scale of interpersonal relations management (4.26) and heads of clinics on the social awareness scale (4.32). The mean scores of the respondents’ responses on all the scales of the questionnaires were very high, ranging from 3.92 to 4.26 with minor differences between the two categories (managers/heads of clinics). In terms of professional satisfaction, the general view of the medical and nursing staff, as expressed by their scores on the JSS, was neutral, with satisfaction in some areas of their work and dissatisfaction in others. Specifically, in the factors “supervision and surveillance” and “collegiality” the medical and nursing staff reported themselves satisfied, but dissatisfaction was reflected by their scores on the dimensions “financial earnings”, “promotion”, “privileges-benefits” and “reward system”. A neutral position was displayed with regard to “working conditions”, “communication” and “nature of work”. CONCLUSIONS According to the survey results, the emotional intelligence of the managers/heads of clinics is high, but this does not, however, lead to the professional satisfaction of medical and nursing staff, which is depicted as neutral. Background: COVID-19 has created mental health challenges for nurses. However, it is unknown if there is a gendered influence on nurses' experiences during the pandemic. Aim: The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of male nurses during COVID-19, including their mental health and experiences of providing emotional support. Methods: We conducted semi-structured interviews using Zoom with nine male nurses and analysed the interviews using thematic analysis. Findings: Male nurses experienced negative mental health outcomes from the pandemic, but participants attributed these outcomes to the context. Male nurses provided emotional support for patients, students, families and other staff and did not describe emotional support as a difficult part of their work. Participants identified their role as a 'breadwinner' of being part of their concern during COVID-19. Participants used a variety of approaches to manage the stressors from the pandemic and cautioned against alcohol as a coping strategy. Discussion and Conclusions: Participants provided emotional support routinely as part of their work and went to great lengths to do so. This finding differs from most published literature that suggests male nurses struggle with emotional and interpersonal aspects of nursing. In this study, a Korean Assessment of Children's Emotional Skills (ACES) was developed by modifying the original ACES which was initially introduced in the United States. Specifically, the original ACES was translated into Korean and revised to better fit the Korean cultural context. The content validity of the revised Korean ACES was established via expert reviews. To test its reliability, the revised Korean ACES was conducted on 286 six-year-old children. A confirmatory factor analysis indicated that our newly developed Korean ACES can be used as an appropriate tool to measure Korean children's emotional skills. The Korean ACES can stimulate further studies on these emotional skills and contribute to various international collaborative studies that seek to compare the emotional skills of children from diverse cultural backgrounds. How do clinicians manage the negative emotions that emerge when hospital patients are dissatisfied with their pain treatment? Drawing on a 21-month hospital ethnography, I show that clinicians view opioids as tools that can allow them to avoid engaging in emotional labor with dissatisfied pain patients. I detail two different strategies that clinicians pursued. Through permissive prescription, clinicians used intravenous (IV) opioids liberally to placate unhappy pain patients, temporarily minimizing patients' emotional needs. Through restrictive prescription, clinicians advocated for the more conservative use of IV opioids in the hopes that dissatisfied patients would leave the hospital, reducing their overall emotional workload. Divergent strategies for using opioids to avoid emotional labor led to hierarchical interprofessional conflict, which was itself a source of negative emotions that needed to be managed. An essential characteristic of an effective healthcare system is the responsiveness to patients' legitimate expectations. Maintaining the responsiveness of health organizations at a high level requires constant evaluation of their situation as perceived by patients. The aim of this study was to assess the perceived responsiveness of inpatients of public healthcare facilities in the South Tongu District, Ghana. This study used a convenient sampling approach to collect data from a total of 200 inpatients who were selected systematically at the time of their discharge. The World Health Organization's (WHO) responsiveness questionnaire was used as the research tool to assess responsiveness. T-test and ANOVA was used for comparing the mean values. More than half of the hospitalized patients ranked the general responsiveness as good (73%). Our results ranked the different levels of responsiveness perceived by patients and revealed the areas that require further attention for improvement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To synthesise the available body of qualitative work regarding the experiences of registered nurses and nursing students in managing emotional demands of care. Background: Care is the central part of nursing, and its provision is linked to interaction with patients. Comprehensive care allows emotions to be considered as an essential part of care. However, the emotional commitment that care demands poses a challenge for the nursing staff. Design: Noblit and Hare's interpretive meta‐ethnography, which was written and reviewed for reporting clarity using the eMERGe. Methods: A comprehensive systematic search strategy was undertaken in PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, Web of Science and PsycINFO in January 2020. The search included terms related to the sample population, phenomenon of interest, purpose of the study and type of research. Original or mixed qualitative articles in English, Spanish and Portuguese were included if they addressed the emotional labour experiences of nurses or nursing students. Results: A line‐of‐argument synthesis based on the metaphor The link between task‐focused care and care beyond technique was developed. Three themes from analogous and refutational translations of findings in the included nine papers emerged: (1) forces to get involved in care; (2) the cost of caring and (3) need to vent. Conclusion: Nursing staff and students managed the emotional demands by adjusting their involvement in care. Care beyond technique is provided by nurses who have strength and motivation in themselves and in the interaction with patients to become emotionally involved in care. Task‐focused care avoids emotional exposure to patient suffering due to the personal cost involved. Venting and distancing are required to emotionally reconstruct themselves and to re‐engage in care. Relevance to clinical practice: Increased knowledge about these experiences may raise awareness of the emotional demands as part of the care process, to prevent their impact and favour their support. Based on a medical corpus, this study attempts to capture how doctors manage their emotions and construct their professional identity in treatment discussions. Using the Emotion Model and the Model of Epistemics and Deontics Gradient, I find that (1) when their professional expertise is questioned or doubted, doctors highlight their epistemic rights and displays negative emotions; (2) when their professional role is negated, doctors give the deontic rights to their patients and discharge negative emotions; and (3) when their professional ethics is challenged, doctors project their professional morality, reinforce their deontic rights and give vent to negative emotions. This study, by integrating the Confucian System of Moral Virtues (see) with Emotion Model, establishes a theoretical framework for examining the association between emotion management and identity construction in Chinese medical discourse. Aim: The aim of this study was to test the hypothesized model of structural relationships between coping styles and occupational coping self-efficacy with health professions stress among a group of nurses. Method: In this correlational study, 151 nurses working in the oncology departments of Tehran University of Medical Sciences responded to the Occupational Coping Self-Efficacy Scale for Nurses (Pisanti, Lombardo, Lucidi, Lazzari & Bertini, 2008), the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations-Short Version (Cohan, Jang & Stein, 2006) and the Health Professions Stress Inventory (Wolfgang, 1988). In this study, the structural equation modeling method was used to test the causal relationships in the hypothetical model. Results: The results showed that the relationship between task-based coping style and occupational coping self-efficacy with health professions stress was negative and significant, and the relationship between emotion-oriented and avoidance coping styles with health professions stress was positive and significant. In addition, the results showed that the hypothesized model had a good fit with the data and the variables of occupational coping self-efficacy and coping styles explained 37% of the variance of health professions stress. Conclusion: The results of this study emphasize the need to apply psychoeducational interventions aimed at enriching the coping skills of people working in health-oriented professions. Nurses and nurse's aides at geriatric facilities face demanding patients and challenging situations that trigger undesired emotions. The psychological implications of care workers' emotional labour have been extensively researched, but not so their emotional experiences and the regulation of these emotions aimed at normalizing the extraordinary situations that arise in the course of geriatric care. The present study is based on data collected in interviews with 36 nurses and nurse's aides, and nine health professionals and management‐level employees, on participant observations, and on field notes collected over a period of 14 months at two geriatric institutions in Israel. The data reveal the construction of patience and impatience as the pivotal emotional experience that needs regulation to cope successfully with extraordinary situations. The findings suggest that strict patience‐display rules were constructed as an occupational impetus that exacts a price by increasing emotional load. Patience was regulated continually by normalizing practices that were culturally embedded in the organizations, by reframing patients' abusive behaviours, and by diffusing undesired emotions using detachment and disengagement practices. The findings contribute to the scarce empirical research on emotional labour of nurse's aides, and to the conceptualization and empirical study of nurses' normalizing regulation practices as cultural‐organizational artefacts. Aim: To identify and compare workaholism, engagement and family interaction levels among Portuguese and Spanish nurses. Background: The contribution of nursing management and leadership to workers' health and well‐being is cardinal to ensure a healthy work environment. However, factors such as workaholism, engagement and family interaction can strongly influence nurses' performance, well‐being and safety. Method: A multicentre, comparative and cross‐sectional study using 333 Portuguese (54.1%) and Spanish (45.9%) nurses working in hospitals. Results: Portuguese nurses showed higher levels for workaholism, negative work–family interaction and negative family–work interaction, while Spanish nurses presented higher levels of engagement, positive work–family interaction and positive family–work interaction. Gender, age, job experience time, academic training, working schedule and type of employment contract influenced workaholism, engagement and work–family interaction among nurses from both countries. Conclusion: During their professional practice, nurses perceived their stress differently according to each country, with Portuguese nurses presenting worst psychological conditions than Spanish nurses, namely higher workaholism, negative work–family interactions and lower engagement. Implications for Nursing Management: Workaholism, engagement and work–family interaction are important areas in which nursing managers must invest to better respond to the new challenges of work contexts. Care for sick parents and their dependent children (<18 years) has become a pertinent issue in health care. Nurses play an important role in caring for parents with cancer as well as their children. By utilizing a constructivist grounded theory approach, the aim of this study was to expand the research-based knowledge of nurses' experiences of personal emotions in this research field and to develop a subsequent explanatory theory extending the existing concept of emotional labor. Interviews with 12 nurses were conducted and analyzed. The nurses experienced this area of work as particularly emotionally challenging and attempted to manage personal emotions through regulating and processing strategies. Through this process, they sought for emotional strength by balancing their private lives and work lives to manage work-related emotions. Background: Emotional distancing was introduced as a means of coping with emotional labor. It safeguards healthcare workers from difficult emotional interactions with patients. It also provides caregivers with an escape from emotional exhaustion, compassion fatigue, and burnout. Aim: This paper aims at defining emotional distancing by identifying its critical attributes and empirical use. Design/Data Source: A literature search was performed using applicable medical and health databases not merely restricted to the medical or nursing fields to understand the concept's true nature. "Emotional distance," "emotional distant," "emotional distancing," "emotionally distance," "emotionally distant," "emotionally distancing," "emotions [MeSH Terms] distance," "emotions distant," and "emotions distancing" were utilized as keywords and controlled vocabulary. Review Methods: Walker and Avant's method was utilized as a comprehensive review of the literature to clarify the meaning of emotional distancing. Antecedents, characteristics, and consequences of emotional distancing were obtained systematically. Results: Based on the analysis, emotional distancing is a self‐controlled defensive strategy involving emotional separation from patients to maintain neutrality. Conclusion: Emotional distancing can enable health‐related workers to protect the mental health of nurses while also providing best nursing care to patients. This helps reduce emotional labor and maintain nurses' professionalism. Further research is needed to develop a specific tool that can identify the circumstances and how healthcare workers can implement this strategy in practice. Sport entrepreneurship is progressively emerging as an extremely significant stream of research. Accordingly, scholars are increasingly assessing how sportspeople tend to have higher entrepreneurial orientation and intentions than the average. In a similar fashion, scholars have also observed how sport-related entrepreneurial ventures can have a positive effect on community development. Nonetheless, this literature stream is still fragmented, lacks a proper systematization, and needs an identification of its intellectual structure and research themes. Hereby, we performed a bibliometric analysis of 86 papers and a systematic literature review on the most influential papers belonging to the pertinent literature. Results show that a 4-cluster structure exists for sport entrepreneurship: its theoretical definitions and internal factors fostering it (cluster 1), environmental factors may foster it (cluster 2), pedagogical approaches and education (cluster 3), and finally its impacts, especially in terms of community development and social benefits (cluster 4). Background: Person-centred practice is inherently integrated in palliative care. However, it cannot be assumed that its underpinning values are lived out in day-to-day practice in a hospice. At St Columba's Hospice, Edinburgh, the five-year strategy demonstrated commitment to person-centredness and this prompted an 18-month project focusing on the evaluation and development of a person-centred culture, taking a practice development approach. Aim: To implement a person-centred practice development research project to assess, evaluate and enhance person-centred culture within St Columba's Hospice. Methods: The theoretical underpinnings of the programme were based on the Person-centred Practice Framework. A transformative practice development approach was employed to bring about change in individuals and teams. Twelve multidisciplinary team members from different departments across the hospice formed a core research project group, which was allocated 10 protected learning and development days over the 18-month period. To assess the existing culture, data were collected at the beginning of the practice development programme, including observation in practice and real-time interviews with patients and staff. The data were analysed using a participatory approach, with group members mapping the data collected against the Person-centred Practice Framework and undertaking creative hermeneutic analysis. Discussion: The project created and sustained a space to explore and expose person-centredness within the hospice and raised awareness of what person-centred culture means in day-to-day practice. Fourth-generation evaluation highlighted further areas for action, with teams developing their own action plans aimed at enhancing person-centred culture. Conclusion and implications for practice: The context of day-to-day practice in a hospice setting is complex, and developing person-centred culture is an ongoing process. Hospices can help their staff to flourish by providing the necessary space to reflect and for critical awareness of own practices to be heightened. Drawing from conservation of resources theory, we contend that motivation (job engagement) fully mediates the relationships between hope and human capital (antecedents) and task performance. We also propose that job engagement provides an interesting explanation for organizational citizenship behaviours (OCBs) that differs from the explanation provided by human capital. Using triad data collected from 170 employees, their supervisors, and their peers at 15 different business organizations in Turkey across four waves, we find that the associations of hope and human capital with task performance occur through job engagement. Interestingly, one path (human capital–job engagement–task performance–OCBs) provides a chain of positive associations that can explain OCBs, whereas another path (human capital–OCBs) has a direct, negative association with OCBs. The results suggest that the motivational value of job engagement leads to improvement in the task performance and OCBs of individuals who are full of hope and have high human capital. Practitioner points: Practising managers should invest in hiring, training, and retaining individuals with high levels of hope and human capital to enhance job engagement in the workplace because such individuals conserve their resources to engage in their job.Job engagement in role A (task) contributes to role B (OCBs) because high accomplishment in task performance generates positive emotions, which lead to high achievement in OCBs. Therefore, practising managers should allow their subordinates to allocate their resources to addressing their multiple roles in the order of the importance that they assign to these roles because employees' resources, energy, time, and attentional capacities are limited. This research examining the level of organizational narcissism and its relations to some variables was completed by the help of data picked from 18 high schools in Sakarya province. Both private and public high schools including general high schools, science and Anatolian high schools have constituted the universe of this study. The sample, a total of 299 teaching stuff, were selected those specified high schools' including 46 managers and 253 teachers of 299 people formed the research sample. The results of the research showed that socioeconomic level and academic achievement linearly related to organizational narcissism. Because the level of organizational narcissism of private schools were higher than those of the public schools and the level of organizational narcissism of Anatolian and science high schools for which their teachers and students are selected via a national entrance and placement examination were higher than those of general high schools. For some reasons, such as having a perception and questionable appreciation of students levels and scores in various exams (national or regional) are equivalent to school achievement, criticizing schools that don't have resembling scores, and differences and variances about resources use, private high schools have higher levels of narcissistic characteristics than state high schools, state high schools for which teachers and students are selected via a national entrance and placement examination have higher levels of narcissistic characteristics than other state schools in which no such an exam is conducted. Background: Children need to be prepared for the death of a parent and supported afterwards. Parents seek support from health and social care professionals to prepare their children. Support is not always forthcoming. Aim: To systematically identify, analyse and synthesise literature reporting of the experiences of health and social care professionals when supporting parents and children during, and following, the death of a parent. Design: A systematically constructed qualitative review and thematic synthesis. Registered on Prospero (CRD42017076345). Data sources: MEDLINE, CINAHL, Embase, PsycINFO, PsycARTICLES and PROSPERO, searched from January 1996 to July 2018 for qualitative studies in English, containing verbatim reporting of health and social care professionals' experiences of supporting parents and children during, and following, the death of a parent. Qualitative data were appraised using a modified Critical Appraisal Skills Programme qualitative appraisal checklist. Results: The search yielded 15,758 articles. Of which, 15 met the inclusion criteria. A total of 13 included professionals' experiences of supporting parents and children before parental death. Two included experiences of supporting surviving parents and children afterwards. Three analytical themes identified as follows: (1) aspiring to deliver family-focussed care, (2) health and social care professionals' behaviours and emotions and (3) improving connections with parents and children. Connecting empathically with parents and children to prepare and support children entails significant emotional labour. Professionals seek to enhance their confidence to connect. Conclusion: Professionals struggle to connect empathically with parents and their children to prepare and to support children when a parent is dying and afterwards. Satisfaction with the business is the current topic of global research, as one of the most important factors in the successful and quality business in tourist companies. The results of these surveys confirm that customer satisfaction and company profit can only be achieved through a quality service provided by satisfied employees. The authors of the research carried out research in accommodation in rural areas in Serbia in the period from March to May 2017, in order to examine the level of satisfaction of employees in these tourist accommodations. The results that the authors have come up with by survey research, undoubtedly indicate that there are segments in the business that the employees are really dissatisfied with, and that education does not have much connection with the chance of changing the job. Background: Frail community-dwelling older adults, whom might experience problems regarding physical, cognitive, psychological, social and environmental factors, are at risk for adverse outcomes such as disability, institutionalization and mortality. People in need of help do not always find their way to care and support services and are left undetected. The aim of the D-SCOPE project is to detect frail community-dwelling older adults who previously went unnoticed and to improve their access to care and support. Goal is to increase their frailty-balance, quality of life, meaning in life, life satisfaction, mastery, community inclusion and ageing well in place.Methods/design: The study is a prospective, longitudinal randomized four-armed controlled trial with follow-up at 6 months. The study group aims to include 900 community-dwelling older adults aged 60 years and over from 3 municipalities in Flanders (Belgium). While selecting the study group, risk profiles for frailty will be taken into account. Participants will be randomly selected from the census records in each municipality. Data will be collected prospectively at baseline (T0) and at follow-up, 6 months after baseline (T1). At baseline, participants who are at least mild frail on one of the 5 domains of frailty (CFAI-plus) or feel frail based on the subjective assessment of frailty will be randomly assigned to (1) the study group or (2) the control group. A mixed method design with the inclusion of quantitative and qualitative data analyses will be used to evaluate the efficacy and experiences of the detection and prevention program on frailty.Discussion: The study will contribute to an innovative vision concerning the organization of care and support, and a timely and accurate detection and support of community-dwelling older adults at risk for frailty.Trial Registration: This trial was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov, on May 26, 2017, identifier: NCT03168204 . Despite increasing interest from the HRD community, little is known about how personal role engagement is experienced in everyday work situations and which factors are most important for facilitating or thwarting such experiences. A total of 124 employees from six U.K. organizations were interviewed about the factors that heighten versus reduce their everyday experiences of the emotional, cognitive, and physical aspects of personal role engagement. Template analysis revealed that task, relational, and organizational resources were the most relevant for heightened personal role engagement whereas relational and organizational hindrances were the most prominent for reduced personal role engagement. There was some variation in the salience of task and personal resources as well as challenge demands across organizational settings. Moreover, resources and demands seemed to influence personal role engagement through the psychological conditions of meaningfulness, availability, and, to some degree, safety. This study is one of the first to qualitatively explore the everyday experience of personal role engagement. In doing so, it provides deeper insight into how an HRD approach to engagement can be further advanced with an appreciation of the situational and organizational context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examined job satisfaction and self-efficacy of library personnel as determinants of their job performance. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. Total enumeration was used to cover 112 library personnel using structured questionnaire. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Four research questions were answered in the study. Result obtained indicated that, the levels of job performance, job satisfaction and self-efficacy of library personnel in universities in Southwest Nigeria were high. Job satisfaction has the highest relative contribution to the job performance of library personnel. Among what the paper recommends is that, that good working condition should be put in place so as to sustain the high level of job motivation and job satisfaction among the library personnel in universities in particular and other higher institutions of learning in Nigeria. Aims and objectives To explore the emotions work undertaken by practitioners with responsibility for the safeguarding of child well-being and establish whether there is a relationship between emotion work, role visibility, professional well-being and effectiveness of supportive frameworks. Background Protecting children is the responsibility of everyone in society with health, social care and public health services leading this worldwide. To safeguard children effectively, it is known that practitioners build relationships with families in sometimes challenging situations, which involve the management of emotions. However, irrespective of this current knowledge; health practitioners who work in this area suggest that their child safeguarding role is not recognised, respected or valued in professional and societal settings. The purpose of this study was to report on a qualitative study which set out to explore the relationship between the known relational-based emotions work of practitioners' and the reported lack of visibility. Methods Hermeneutic phenomenology underpinned the study. Semistructured interviews were employed for data collection. Ten participants actively working with preschool children and families in healthcare organisations were recruited. Results The emotional-, relationship- and communicative-based work crucial to effectively safeguard children may influence the visibility of the role. Poor role visibility influences the morale of practitioners and the support they receive. Conclusion In conclusion this study proposes that when there is poor role recognition; there is ineffective clinical support. This reduces professional well-being, which in turn will impact practitioner abilities to safeguard children. Relevance to clinical practice This study highlights that to sustain safe and effective health and social care practice, organisational leads require an understanding of the impact emotional- and relational-based work can have on practitioners and provide supportive frameworks that will effectively promote professional well-being. Introduction: Power is a complex and extensive concept in nursing, which has a decisive impact on the accomplishment of duties, satisfaction and achievement of professional goals. Explaining the concept of power in nursing from the perspective of nurses and accessing its various dimensions may result in a better understanding of this issue. Aim: This study was aimed to explore the concept of power in nursing, using the views and experiences of Iranian nurses. Materials and Methods: This study was a qualitative research which used a content analysis approach. Participants were selected from among nurses active in clinical, management, and educational practices using the purposive sampling method. Data were collected using a semi-structured individual interview. The results were obtained by analysing the data using an inductive approach and the constant comparison method. Results: The participants of this study regarded the power of nursing as a positive concept and the issue of power in nursing consisted of three classes, the genesis with the subclasses of "being purposeful", "being under the shadow of the profession nature", "being dependent on the source", strengthening with the subclasses of "being emotional and introverted", "being formed in the context of professional communication", "fluidity and flowing", and the evolution with the subclasses "based on human values", and "being a tool for professional excellence". Conclusion: The concept of power in nursing can be considered a purposeful issue based on the nurses' viewpoint which flourishes in the context of human, moral and caring nature of the nursing profession. According to its dependence on the nature of profession and on the basis of professional communication, Power of nursing grows with a fluidlike flowing structure, linked with human values, reaches maturity and results in outcomes such as improving the quality of care and professional excellence. Aim The aim of this study was to explore emotion cultures constructed in supervision and consider how supervision functions as an emotionally safe space promoting critical reflection. Background Research published between 1995-2015 suggests supervision has a positive impact on nurses' emotional well-being, but there is little understanding of the processes involved in this and how styles of emotion interaction are established in supervision. Design A narrative approach was used to investigate mental health nurses' understandings and experiences of supervision. Methods Eight semi-structured interviews were conducted with community mental health nurses in the UK during 2011. Analysis of audio data used features of speech to identify narrative discourse and illuminate meanings. A topic-centred analysis of interview narratives explored discourses shared between the participants. This supported the identification of feeling rules in participants' narratives and the exploration of the emotion context of supervision. Findings Effective supervision was associated with three feeling rules: safety and reflexivity; staying professional; managing feelings. These feeling rules allowed the expression and exploration of emotions, promoting critical reflection. A contrast was identified between the emotion culture of supervision and the nurses' experience of their workplace cultures as requiring the suppression of difficult emotions. Despite this, contrast supervision functioned as an emotion micro-culture with its own distinctive feeling rules. Conclusions The analytical construct of feeling rules allows us to connect individual emotional experiences to shared normative discourses, highlighting how these shape emotional processes taking place in supervision. This understanding supports an explanation of how supervision may positively influence nurses' emotion management and perhaps reduce burnout. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent reforms in higher education have provided material for researching different aspects of doctoral studies in a variety of ways. Much of the current literature concentrates on characteristics of effective supervision and doctoral students’ experiences. Less attention has been paid to the study experiences of non-completers – former doctoral students who dropped out of doctoral programmes prior to graduation. In the current study, we explore doctoral studies experiences from the perspective of non-completers and aim to identify factors that were related to dropping out. Data were collected with semi-structured interviews from 14 former doctoral students in the field of education, and qualitative thematic data analysis techniques were employed for data analysis. The results indicate that dropping out from doctoral studies is associated with different factors: for example, (with) students’ personal factors, supervisory arrangements, as well as factors related to institution and the wider learning environment. These results are further discussed and implications for enhancing study arrangements for doctoral studies are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In bioethics, the concept of vulnerability is applied almost exclusively to research participants and patients. We turn the tables and apply the concept to nurses caring for anorexia nervosa (AN) sufferers. In doing so, and using results from a qualitative research study undertaken in the UK, we show that AN nurses face a significant probability of incurring identifiable harms (inauthentic relationships and nonreciprocal relationships). Some recommendations on how these harms can be avoided or mitigated are given, but further research is needed. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The aim of the article is to propose a job quality composite indicator (JQCI) by which to measure the quality of young graduates' jobs. We design JQCI by grouping jobs' objective and perceived characteristics into three dimensions-economic, professional, and work-life balance-following a theory-driven approach, and weighting each dimension according to its importance. We apply the resulting JQCI to a sample of Italian graduates 3 years after graduation and validate it by measuring their motivation to leave their jobs, assuming that poor quality could be a reason to want to leave a job. We find that the professional dimension scores the highest. Relevant differences in job quality are related to individual (gender, degree level, disciplinary field, whether the graduate worked while studying) and organizational characteristics (company size). Implications for policy-makers and for firms interested in attracting and retaining Generation Y workers are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study reports the development of a measurement scale, The Nurses’ Involvement in Patients’ Dying and Death Scale (NIPDYDS), which fully captures the experiences of nurses caring for patients’ dying and death. Potential items were extracted from narrative data gathered systematically and comprehensively from in-depth interviews with nurses engaged in caring for patients’ dying and death. Factor analyses revealed four factors, consisting of 40 total items, with two factors related to the positive aspects of the experience (Deep involvement in facing dying and death and Increased competence in facing dying and death) and two factors related to the negative aspects of the experience (Uncertainty and difficulty dealing with dying and death and Accustomed to dying and death). Validity and reliability of the scale were found to be acceptable. The factorial structure of the NIPDYDS was contrasted to Frommelt’s (1991) FATCOD (The Frommelt Attitude Toward Care of the Dying Scale), and the usefulness and limitations of the NIPDYDS were discussed. Knowledge, skills and talents of employees constitute a significant source of competitive advantage. The consequence of this paradigm is the conclusion that organizations attempting to increase the efficiency must take steps to improve employees' qualifications. Caring for the employee development, the enterprises aspire to creation of the best practices in this area. Over time, best practices are converging in all the companies performing in various cultures and countries. However, the dissimilarity of Polish conditions, instead of convergence, may cause divergence or cross-vergence in the employee development. In the article, there were juxtaposed and compared the practices of the employees development in Polish and international companies operating in Poland. Objective: This study estimates the prevalence of absenteeism due to voice disorders among teachers and investigates individual and contextual factors associated with it. Methods: The study involved 1,980 teachers from 76 municipal schools. The response rate was 85%. The survey was carried out between May 2004 and July 2005 using a self-administered structured questionnaire containing sociodemographic, lifestyle, health, and work-related questions. The dependent variable was obtained from answers to the following question: In the last 2 weeks, have you missed work because of voice problems? Logistic regression analysis was used to determine the associated factors. Results: Voice-related absenteeism in the prior 2 weeks was reported by 66 teachers (3.35%). During their entire careers, approximately one-third of teachers missed work at least once due to voice problems. In the final model, factors associated with recent absenteeism were as follows: witnessing violence by students or parents one or more times (OR = 2.10; 95% CI = 1.14-3.90), presence of depression or anxiety (OR = 2.03; 95% CI = 1.09-3.78), upper respiratory problems in the prior 2 weeks (OR = 2.85; 95% CI = 1.53-5.29), and absenteeism because of voice problems during the preceding 6 months (OR = 15.79; 95% CI = 8.18-30.45). Conclusions: The results encourage new approaches to the problems of absenteeism in the educational sector and contribute to addressing the weaknesses of economic and administrative approaches to the phenomenon.
