Infrared thermography is gaining relevance in breast cancer assessment. For this purpose, breast segmentation in thermograms is an important task for performing automatic image analysis and detecting possible temperature changes that indicate the presence of malignancy. However, it is not a simple task since the breast limit borders, especially the top borders, often have low contrast, making it difficult to isolate the breast area. Several algorithms have been proposed for breast segmentation, but these highly depend on the contrast at the lower breast borders and on filtering algorithms to remove false edges. This work focuses on taking advantage of the distinctive inframammary shape to simplify the definition of the lower breast border, regardless of the contrast level, which indeed also provides a strong anatomical reference to support the definition of the poorly marked upper boundary of the breasts, which has been one of the major challenges in the literature. In order to demonstrate viability of the proposed technique for an automatic breast segmentation, we applied it to a database with 180 thermograms and compared their results with those reported by others in the literature. We found that our approach achieved a high performance, in terms of Intersection over Union of 0.934, even higher than that reported by artificial intelligence algorithms. Environmental variation often induces plastic responses in organisms that can trigger changes in subsequent generations through non-genetic inheritance mechanisms. Such transgenerational plasticity thus consists of environmentally induced non-random phenotypic modifications that are transmitted through generations. Transgenerational effects may vary according to the sex of the organism experiencing the environmental perturbation, the sex of their descendants or both, but whether they are affected by past sexual selection is unknown. Here, we use experimental evolution on an insect model system to conduct a first test of the involvement of sexual selection history in shaping transgenerational plasticity in the face of rapid environmental change (exposure to pesticide). We manipulated evolutionary history in terms of the intensity of sexual selection for over 80 generations before exposing individuals to the toxicant. We found that sexual selection history constrained adaptation under rapid environmental change. We also detected inter- and transgenerational effects of pesticide exposure in the form of increased fitness and longevity. These cross-generational influences of toxicants were sex dependent (they affected only male descendants), and intergenerational, but not transgenerational, plasticity was modulated by sexual selection history. The objectives of this study are to develop the SEIR model for COVID-19 and evaluate its main parameters such as therapeutic vaccines, vaccination rate, and effectiveness of prophylactic. Global and local stability of the model and numerical simulation are examined. The local stability of equilibrium points was classified. A Lyapunov function is constructed to analyze the global stability of the disease-free equilibrium. The simulation part is based on two situations, including the USA and Iran. The COVID-19 pandemic forced more than 50 million students and their families to adapt to remote schooling. Most disrupted were communities of color, who faced multiple and overlapping inequalities in digital and equipment access, exposing and exacerbating existing disparities. Conducted in a small rural school district, this study surveyed the experiences of rural Spanish-speaking Latino caregivers. A total of 104 caregivers responded to a survey assessing caregiver digital literacy and access, school support, caregiver-teacher relationship and communication, and caregiver values, expectations, and teaching efficacy. Findings highlighted wide disparities in digital access and availability of equipment or devices compared to recent reports of more affluent White caregivers. Findings also highlighted that strong caregiver-teacher relationships were important for helping caregivers to navigate children's instruction during remote instruction. While student learning losses have yet to be fully assessed, hints at the full impact of school closures for rural linguistically and culturally diverse families are available from other countries, and they suggest that learning losses will be much greater for children from disadvantaged families than the population at large. Water recycling and reuse are cornerstones of water management, which can be compromised by the presence of pollutants. Among these, pharmaceuticals can overcome standard water treatments and require sophisticated approaches to remove them. Sorption is an economically viable alternative limited by the need for sorbents with a sorption coefficient (Kd) higher than 500 L/kg. The cross-linking of dextrin (Dx) with divinyl sulfone (DVS) in the presence of 1 mmol or 5 mmol of ibuprofen (IBU) yields the insoluble polymers pDx1 and pDx5 with improved affinity for IBU and high selectivity towards erythromycin (ERY) and ERY Kd higher than 4 × 103 L/kg, when tested against a cocktail of six drugs. Characterization of the polymers shows that both pDx1 and pDx5 have similar properties, fast sorption kinetics, and ERY Kd of 13.3 × 103 for pDx1 and 6.4 × 103 for pDx5, representing 26.6 and 12.0 times the 500 L/kg threshold. The fact that new affinities and improvements in Kd can be achieved by cross-linking Dx in the presence of other molecules that promote pre-organization expands the applications of DVS cross-linked polysaccharides as sustainable, scalable, and environmentally friendly sorbents with a potential application in wastewater treatment plants (WTPs). High-precision satellite laser ranging measurements to Galileo retroreflector panels are analyzed to determine the angle of incidence of the laser beam based on specific orientations of the panel with respect to the observing station. During the measurements, the panel aligns with respect to the observing station in such a way that multiple retroreflectors appear at the same range, forming regions of increased data density—separated by a few millimeters. First, measurements to a spare IOV-type retroreflector mounted on an astronomical mount at a remote location 32 km away from the Graz laser ranging station are performed. In addition, more than 100 symmetry passes to Galileo satellites in orbit have been measured. Two novel techniques are described to form laser ranging normal points with improved precision compared to traditional methods. An individual normal point can be formed for each set of retroreflectors at a constant range. The central normal point was shown to be up to 4 mm more accurate when compared with a precise orbit solution. Similar offsets are determined by applying a pattern correlation technique comparing simulated with measured data, and the first method is verified. Irregular reflection patterns of Galileo FOC panels indicate accumulated far-field diffraction patterns resulting from non-uniform retroreflector distributions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

People living with deafness or hearing impairment have limited access to information broadcast live on television. Live closed captioning is a currently active area of study; to our knowledge, there is no system developed thus far that produces high-quality captioning results without using scripts or human interaction. This paper presents a comparative analysis of the quality of captions generated for four Spanish news programs by two captioning systems: a semiautomatic system based on respeaking (system currently used by a Spanish TV station) and an automatic system without human interaction proposed and developed by the authors. The analysis is conducted by measuring and comparing the accuracy, latency and speed of the captions generated by both captioning systems. The captions generated by the system presented higher quality considering the accuracy in terms of Word Error Rate (WER between 3.76 and 7.29%) and latency of the captions (approximately 4 s) at an acceptable speed to access the information. We contribute a first study focused on the development and analysis of an automatic captioning system without human intervention with promising quality results. This article explores the importance of long-term thinking and planning in preserving biodiversity and promoting the well-being of humanity. It acknowledges that the current focus on short-term gains and self-interest often leads to the depletion of natural resources, climate change, and loss of biodiversity. While there is growing awareness of these issues, the article argues that most current plans are still short-sighted. It raises questions about the appropriate time frame for considering biodiversity preservation and advocates for a cosmic perspective that takes into account the long-term future of life on Earth and beyond. We analyze a model in which workers direct their search on and off the job and employer–worker match productivities are private information. Employers can commit neither to post contracts such that wages are a function of tenure nor to disregard counteroffers. In this context, potential employers who do not observe workers' productivity in their current matches use wages as a signal of workers' willingness to switch jobs. In turn, this implies that the wage contracts that employers post in the market for entry jobs—the jobs unemployed workers search for—not only direct job search but also signal future worker mobility. When the costs of creating entry jobs are sufficiently small, the unique equilibrium supports the efficient allocation under full information. When the costs of creating entry jobs are sufficiently large, the efficient equilibrium may break down because match‐specific risk gives rise to a holdup problem in the market for entry jobs. Then the unique equilibrium may fail to reveal match productivities in the market for entry jobs. The nonrevealing equilibrium features wage posting—pooling wage contracts—as well as counteroffers, which eliminates the holdup problem at the cost of distorting worker mobility. There is a growing trend in using saliva for SARS-CoV-2 detection with reasonable accuracy. We have studied the responses of IgA, IgG, and IgM in human saliva by directly comparing disease with control analyzing two-trace two-dimensional correlation spectra (2T2D-COS) employing Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra. It explores the molecular-level variation between control and COVID-19 saliva samples. The advantage of 2T2D spectra is that it helps in discriminating remarkably subtle features between two simple pairs of spectra. It gives spectral information from highly overlapped bands associated with different systems. The clinical findings from 2T2D show the decrease of IgG and IgM salivary antibodies in the 50, 60, 65, and 75-years COVID-19 samples. Among the various COVID-19 populations studied the female 30-years group reveals defense mechanisms exhibited by IgM and IgA. Lipids and fatty acids decrease, resulting in lipid oxidation due to the SARS-CoV-2 in the samples studied. Study shows salivary thiocyanate plays defense against SARS-CoV-2 in the male population in 25 and 35 age groups. The receiver operation characteristics statistical method shows a sensitivity of 98% and a specificity of 94% for the samples studied. The measure of accuracy computed as F score and G score has a high value, supporting our study's validation. Thus, 2T2D-COS analysis can potentially monitor the progression of immunoglobulin's response function to COVID-19 with reasonable accuracy, which could help diagnose clinical trials. Whether sexual selection facilitates or hampers the ability to plastically respond to novel environments might depend on population structure, via its effects on sexual interactions and associated fitness payoffs. Using experimentally evolved lines of the seed beetle Callosobruchus maculatus , we tested whether individuals evolving under different sexual selection (monogamy vs. polygamy) and population spatial structure (metapopulation vs. undivided populations) treatments differed in their response across developmental thermal conditions (control, hot, or stressful) in a range of fitness and fitness-associated traits. We found that individuals from subdivided populations had lower lifetime reproductive success at hot temperatures, but only in lines evolving under relaxed sexual selection, revealing a complex interaction between sexual selection, population structure, and thermal environmental stress on fitness. We also found an effect of population structure on several traits, including fertility and adult emergence success, under exposure to high thermal conditions. Finally, we found a strong negative effect of hot and stressful temperatures on fitness and associated traits. Our results show that population structure can exacerbate the impact of a warming climate, potentially leading to declines in population viability, but that sexual selection can buffer the negative influence of population subdivision on adaptation to warm temperatures. The leaves of Psidium guajava L. are an agro-industrial by-product with an outstanding content of polyphenolic compounds; however, there are many factors which can affect the phytochemical profile when valuing this type of plant material, such as temperatures and extraction times involving in the extraction methods applied. In this context, this study analyzed the impact of different extraction methods (Soxhlet, maceration and ultrasound-assisted extraction) on the phytochemical profile (FTIR and UPLC-MS) and the antioxidant activity (ABTS, FRAP and Folin–Ciocalteu) of guava leaf extracts. A yield of phenolic compounds per gram of guava leaf was obtained within the range of 16 to 45 mg/g; on the other hand, the I C 50 values determined with the ABTS assay ranged between 78 ± 4 to 152 ± 12 µg/mL. The methanolic extract obtained by Soxhlet was the one with the best reducing power, both in the FRAP assay and in the Folin–Ciocalteu assay. Finally, bioactive compounds such as quercetin, kaempferol and avicularin were identified in the guava leaf extract. It was concluded that the purification of polyphenolics compounds improves the antioxidant capacity, and that the extraction method greatly influences the phytochemical profile and activity of the extracts. Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (App) is a globally distributed Gram-negative bacterium that produces porcine pleuropneumonia. This highly contagious disease produces high morbidity and mortality in the swine industry. However, no effective vaccine exists to prevent it. The infection caused by App provokes characteristic lesions, such as edema, inflammation, hemorrhage, and necrosis, that involve different virulence factors. The colonization and invasion of host surfaces involved structures and proteins such as outer membrane vesicles (OMVs), pili, flagella, adhesins, outer membrane proteins (OMPs), also participates proteases, autotransporters, and lipoproteins. In recent years, the progressive incorporation of teaching tools based on Web 2.0 in the face-to-face university in Italy has been an ongoing process, and, clearly, a necessary one. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has created new circumstances that have accelerated this process. The suspension of face-to-face classes and the need to find alternative ways of teaching so as not to curtail university activity have contributed fundamentally to this. In this context, we have designed and developed a study with the aim of analyzing the influence of various personal and social variables of Italian university teachers on their intention of using teaching tools based on Web 2.0. To achieve this objective, we have proposed a model of structural equations that takes into account attitude, perceived usefulness, self-efficacy, social norms, and affective commitment as antecedent variables of intention. A total of 3,792 teachers participated in the study. The main results of this study show that the five variables considered positively influence the intention to use 2.0 tools in university teaching, self-efficacy being the variable that contributes most to the explanation of this intention. Aristotle notoriously begins his examination of being in the sense of dunamis and energeia in Metaphysics Theta with what he describes as the sense that is 'most dominant' but not useful for his present aim. He proceeds to define the not-useful sense of dunamis as "the principle of change in something else or in itself qua other", along with other senses derived from this primary sense. But what then is the useful sense? All that Aristotle tells us at the outset is that it is a sense that extends "beyond things spoken of only in relation to motion" and nowhere in Book Theta does he explicitly identify the useful sense as such. This has allowed for very different interpretations of the useful sense in the literature, the primary ones being that it is (1) 'possibility', (2) the potential to receive a form, (3) being-potentially-x understood modally as encompassing all specific senses of dunamis, and (4) capacity for substantial change. The present paper argues that there are significant problems with all of these suggestions and defends an identification of the useful sense of dunamis with the sense that Aristotle explicitly opposes to the not-useful sense at the start of Theta 8: phusis ('nature'). This goes hand-in-hand with an identification of the useful sense of energeia with 'activity' as distinguished from motion/change at the end of Theta 6. What makes these senses of dunamis and energeia the useful ones for Aristotle's present aim is that they are required to explain fully the priority of energeia to dunamis in substance defended in Theta 8, they support the identification in Theta 9 of energeia with the good, and they explain the unity of the only substances that Aristotle recognizes as being genuinely substances: natural living substances. The optimization of an undergraduate experiment for Organic Chemistry students is described to explore the concept of click chemistry. The preparation of a terminal fluorescent alkyne and an organic azide is reported consisting of simple steps. These are employed in the Cu(I)-catalized azide-alkyne cycloaddition to obtain a novel molecule containing a triazole ring whose characterization allows the students to practice a variety of techniques: NMR (1H, 13C, COSY and HSQC), melting point, thin layer chromatography, IR, fluorescence spectroscopy and mass spectrometry to confirm the structure of their obtained product. Introduction: Graves' disease is an autoimmune disorder. Goiter and Graves' orbitopathy are frequently seen clinically. It would be helpful for the diagnosis, grading, prognosis, and treatment of this condition if it was possible to find serum biomarkers to establish a connection between the plasma levels of these compounds and orbital changes. Methods: A retrospective study was performed by revising the medical records of 44 patients with Graves' orbitopathy and 15 controls. The Osirix software (Pixmeo, Geneva, Switzerland) was used for manual orbital measurements. Plasma levels of Graves' orbitopathy substances were obtained in the analytical review of the patients. Results: A greater muscle volume was observed in patients with Graves' orbitopathy in relation to the control group (p < 0.001). The clinical activity score (CAS) was associated to total muscle mass (p = 0.013) and retrorbital fat (p = 0.048). Our results indicated a direct relationship between serum concentrations of anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies and inferior rectus thickening (p = 0.036); however, we did not observe a positive correlation between other muscle volumes and serum concentrations of various thyroid-related substances. Conclusions: This study is the first that uses Osirix measurement software to manually assess orbital features in patients with Graves' orbitopathy. These measurements were compared to the outcomes of tests performed in a laboratory. Among several serum biomarkers, anti-thyroid peroxidase appears to be a reliable biomarker that correlates positively with inferior rectus muscle thickness in patients with thyroid eye disease. The receptive field (RF) of a visual neuron is the region of the space that elicits neuronal responses. It can be mapped using different techniques that allow inferring its spatial and temporal properties. Raw RF maps (RFmaps) are usually noisy, making it difficult to obtain and study important features of the RF. A possible solution is to smooth them using P‐splines. Yet, raw RFmaps are characterized by sharp transitions in both space and time. Their analysis thus asks for spatiotemporal adaptive P‐spline models, where smoothness can be locally adapted to the data. However, the literature lacks proposals for adaptive P‐splines in more than two dimensions. Furthermore, the extra flexibility afforded by adaptive P‐spline models is obtained at the cost of a high computational burden, especially in a multidimensional setting. To fill these gaps, this work presents a novel anisotropic locally adaptive P‐spline model in two (e.g., space) and three (space and time) dimensions. Estimation is based on the recently proposed SOP (Separation of Overlapping Precision matrices) method, which provides the speed we look for. Besides the spatiotemporal analysis of the neuronal activity data that motivated this work, the practical performance of the proposal is evaluated through simulations, and comparisons with alternative methods are reported. Objective: This study investigated early, real‐world outcomes with cenobamate (CNB) in a large series of patients with highly drug‐resistant epilepsy within a Spanish Expanded Access Program (EAP). Method: This was a multicenter, retrospective, observational study in 14 hospitals. Inclusion criteria were age ≥18 years, focal seizures, and EAP authorization. Data were sourced from patient clinical records. Primary effectiveness endpoints included reductions (100%, ≥90%, ≥75%, and ≥50%) or worsening in seizure frequency at 3‐, 6‐, and 12‐month visits and at the last visit. Safety endpoints included rates of adverse events (AEs) and AEs leading to discontinuation. Results: The study included 170 patients. At baseline, median epilepsy duration was 26 years and median number of seizures/month was 11.3. The median number of prior antiseizure medications (ASMs) and concomitant ASMs were 12 and 3, respectively. Mean CNB dosages/day were 176 mg, 200 mg, and 250 mg at 3, 6, and 12 months. Retention rates were 98.2%, 94.5%, and 87% at 3, 6, and 12 months. At last available visit, the rate of seizure freedom was 13.3%; ≥90%, ≥75%, and ≥50% responder rates were 27.9%, 45.5%, and 63%, respectively. There was a significant reduction in the number of seizures per month (mean: 44.6%; median: 66.7%) between baseline and the last visit (P < 0.001). Responses were maintained regardless of the number of prior or concomitant ASMs. The number of concomitant ASMs was reduced in 44.7% of patients. The cumulative percentage of patients with AEs and AEs leading to discontinuation were 68.2% and 3.5% at 3 months, 74.1% and 4.1% at 6 months, and 74.1% and 4.1% at 12 months. The most frequent AEs were somnolence and dizziness. Significance: In this highly refractory population, CNB showed a high response regardless of prior and concomitant ASMs. AEs were frequent but mostly mild‐to‐moderate, and few led to discontinuation. Simple Summary: Lung transplant recipients are at high risk of malignancies. Despite the continuous improvements in lung transplant outcomes over time, limited knowledge exists about the real impact of de novo malignancies developing in lung transplant recipients on their long-term survival. For this reason, we aimed to assess the prevalence of de novo malignancies in a large cohort of lung transplant recipients, their influence on long-term survival, and whether malignancies were an independent risk factor for mortality. We found that 12% of the overall series developed some type of malignancy, with malignancy-related mortality for almost half of the patients developing malignancies. This finding reflects the magnitude of the problem. Furthermore, we observed that de novo lung cancers were the most lethal, affecting the native lungs of recipients receiving single lung transplants. This observation makes it necessary to reconsider performing single lung transplants, especially in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. (1) Background: Malignancies are an important cause of mortality after solid organ transplantation. The purpose of this study was to analyze the incidence of malignancies in patients receiving lung transplants (LT) and their influence on patients' survival. (2) Methods: Review of consecutive LT from 1994 to 2021. Patients with and without malignancies were compared by univariable and multivariable analyses. Survival was compared with Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression analysis. (3) Results: There were 731 LT malignancies developed in 91 patients (12.4%) with related mortality of 47% (n = 43). Native lung cancer, digestive and hematological malignancies were associated with higher lethality. Malignancies were more frequent in males (81%; p = 0.005), transplanted for emphysema (55%; p = 0.003), with cyclosporine-based immunosuppression (58%; p < 0.001), and receiving single LT (65%; p = 0.011). Survival was worse in patients with malignancies (overall) and with native lung cancer. Risk factors for mortality were cyclosporine-based immunosuppression (OR 1.8; 95%CI: 1.3–2.4; p < 0.001) and de novo lung cancer (OR 2.6; 95%CI: 1.5–4.4; p < 0.001). (4) Conclusions: Malignancies are an important source of morbidity and mortality following lung transplantation that should not be neglected. Water use has been increasing globally by 1% per year, and recycling and re-use are critical issues compromised by the presence of pollutants. In this context, the design of novel materials and/or procedures for the large scale-removal of pollutants must be economically and environmentally feasible in order to be considered as part of the solution by emerging economies. We demonstrate that the cross-linking of biodegradable polysaccharides such as starch, dextrin, or dextrin and β-cyclodextrin with divinyl sulfone is an innovative strategy for synthesizing insoluble and eco-friendly sorbent polymers, including pSt, pDx and pCD-Dx. The evaluation of these polymers' ability to remove ciprofloxacin (CIP), a prime example of antibiotic pollution, revealed that pSt, with a Kd of 1469 L/kg and a removal rate higher than 92%, is a favorable material. Its sorption is pH-dependent and enhanced at a mildly alkaline pH, allowing for the desorption (i.e., cleaning) and reuse of pSt through an environmentally friendly treatment with 20 mM AcONa pH 4.6. The facts that pSt (i) shows a high affinity for CIP even at high NaCl concentrations, (ii) can be obtained from affordable starting materials, and (iii) is synthesized and regenerated through organic, solvent-free procedures make pSt a novel sustainable material for inland water and seawater remediation, especially in less developed countries, due to its simplicity and low cost. Strain burst hazard is one of the main challenges that faces deep underground environments. To manage it, it is needed to assess its probability occurrence (or potential). Various methods have been proposed over the years to assess the phenomenon early on. However, due to uncertainties in rock mass properties and the physical processes of the phenomenon, mitigation measures are an additional important line of defense to ensure workplace safety. While work has been carried out to assess the rockburst hazard better and improve support systems, the effect of mitigation measures on strain burst hazard potential is unclear. This paper studies the influence of the implementation of shotcrete and rockbolts support and destress blasting in tunnels on strain burst potential, based on two-dimensional numerical models of circular tunnels. The results highlight that, as expected, the use of mitigation measures allows the strain burst occurrence to decrease. However, the strain burst hazard level does not decrease easily, even when using mitigation measures. In the case of serious overbreak hazards, only a combination of system support and destress blasting seems to have an impact on these events, and not for all the simulated cases. Recent approval of transdermal flunixin meglumine (FM) (Banamine®) in cattle has opened the door for the drug's potential application in other species. Transdermal FM could provide a safe and effective form of pain relief in donkeys. In order to evaluate the pharmacokinetics and effects of FM on anti-inflammatory biomarkers in donkeys, a three-way crossover study design was employed. In total, 6 healthy donkeys were administered transdermal (TD) FM at a dosage of 3.3 mg/kg, and oral (PO) and intravenous (IV) doses of 1.1 mg/kg body weight. Blood samples were collected over 96 h to determine the concentration of flunixin, 5OH flunixin, and eicosanoids (TXB2 and PGF2 alpha) using LC-MS/MS. The results indicated that both flunixin and 5OH flunixin were detectable in blood samples collected during TD. The elimination of the drug was slower following the TD route compared to PO and IV. TD administration significantly decreased TXB2 levels in non-stimulated serum from 1 to 96 h post-administration, while IV and PO resulted in TXB2 reduction for 1 to 8 h. A significant reduction in PGF2 alpha was observed in PO and IV 1 h after administration, while TD resulted in a gradual decline from 4 to 72 h. Selenium (Se) has been defined as the "Janus element", with one face showing antioxidant activity and the other pro-oxidant activity. The biological effect of Se depends on both dose and speciation. Se nanoparticles are attracting major interest, although their large-scale preparation for biomedical applications is not trivial. We hypothesize that acid anhydride-coated carbon dots (AA-CD) are an attractive platform for preparing nanoparticles containing chemically defined Se. The reaction of AA-CD with 3-selenocyanatopropan-1-amine yields carbon dots bearing selenocyanate and carboxylate groups (CD-SeCN) that allow for tuning the hydrosolubility. CD-SeCN has a Se content of 0.36 µmol per mg of nanoparticles, and they show the typical photoluminescence of carbon dots. The selenocyanate groups (SeCN) exhibited glutathione peroxidase-like activity and cytotoxicity. Data show that antioxidant behavior differs between normal and tumor cells, and the evaluation on HEK293 and A549 cells reveals that the toxicity of CD-SeCN depends on dose, time, and intracellular glutathione (GSH) content. The toxicity of CD-SeCN decreases with the time of incubation and the cell death mechanism switches from necrosis to apoptosis, indicating that CD-SeCN is neutralized. Additionally, high levels of intracellular GSH exert a protective effect. These results support a pharmacological potential in cancers with low levels of intracellular GSH. The aim of this study is to explore the safety and efficacy of bee venom immunotherapy without HSA, in real-life patients. Methods: This is an observational retrospective study developed in seven hospitals in Spain, where patients treated with this immunotherapy were included. They gathered the protocol used to initiate the immunotherapy, adverse reactions, field re-stings, and the patient clinical data (clinical history, biomarkers, and skin prick test). Results: A total of 108 patients were included. In total, 4 protocols were used (5 weeks reaching 200 μg, and 4, 3, and 2 weeks reaching 100 μg). An incidence of systemic adverse reactions for each 100 injections of 1.5, 1.7, 0, and 0.58, respectively, was found. The demographic data showed not to directly affect the appearance of adverse reactions, except for those having a grade 2 systemic reaction with immunotherapy previously had a grade 4 systemic reaction; the IgE to Apis mellifera was 3 times higher in patients with systemic reactions of grade 1 than in the general group, and other specific IgEs were lower in those with systemic reactions. Most of the patients recognized Api m 1 followed by Api m 10. In the sample, 32% experienced spontaneous re-stings, without presenting systemic reactions, after a year of treatment. The wide range of symptoms of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) makes it challenging to predict the disease evolution using a single parameter. Therefore, to describe the pathophysiological response to SARS-CoV-2 infection in hospitalized patients with severe COVID-19, we compared according to survival or death, the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, the biochemical and immunological attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectra from saliva samples and their correlation with chemometric findings. Herein, we demonstrate that ATR-FTIR spectroscopy allows the description of the events related to cell damage, such as lipids biogenesis and the secondary structure of proteins associated with lactate dehydrogenase and albumin levels. Background. Social distancing measures have been one of the core pillars of the strategy against COVID-19 in all the countries. This study aims at understanding what motivates behaviours and compliance with social distancing measures among students and workers from a Spanish public university. Methods. We carry out two logistics models considering two different dependent variables: not maintaining social relation with non-cohabiting people and not to leave home except for emergencies (n = 507, sample is formed by students and workers from the University of Cantabria in the North of Spain). Results. Being very concerned about getting ill suggests higher risk of not maintaining social relation with non-cohabiting people. Getting older increase the probability of not leaving home except for emergencies as happens with those who are very concerned about getting ill. Young people often living with vulnerable older relatives may affect students’ behaviour. Conclusions. Our findings suggest that compliance with social distancing measures depends on several factors related to age, the number or kind of cohabiting people and level of concern about getting ill. Simple Summary: Introduction of monitoring of male diamondback moth using lures emitting female sex pheromone allowed farmers to determine the populations of adult DBM in cabbages in several cabbage farms in Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Farmers were encouraged to use trap capture data to trigger insecticide applications as an alternative to their normal practice of calendarized insecticide applications. Those farmers with the highest insecticide application rates against DBM were the most receptive to the idea of using pheromone-baited traps and reduced their spray regime by the largest proportion. Reduced spray schedules do not increase damage but can increase profits for farmers. The diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.), is a worldwide pest of brassica crops, resistant to a large number of insecticides. As an alternative, the use of pheromone-baited traps has been proposed but farmers are yet to be convinced. In the present study, we aimed to validate the benefits of the use of pheromone-baited traps for monitoring and mass trapping in cabbage production in Central America as means of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in comparison to calendarized insecticide sprays, which are the farmers' current practices (FCP). Mass trapping was established in nine selected plots of cabbage in Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Average captures of males/trap/night, plant damage and net profits of these IPM plots were compared to simultaneously evaluated or historically reported FCP plots. The results indicate that in Costa Rica, trap captures did not justify the application of insecticides and average net profits increased by more than 11% when the trapping methods were implemented. In Nicaragua, IPM plots were able to reduce insecticide applications to one third of those in FCP plots. Objectives: To report that the periorbital changes induced by prostaglandin analogue (PGA) eye drops are partially reversible after discontinuing treatment. Materials and Methods: Nine patients with prostaglandin-associated periorbitopathy seen in a referral oculoplastic practice were included in this study, eight with unilateral glaucoma and one with bilateral open-angle glaucoma. All of them had been treated with topical PGA for at least one year, before the treatment was discontinued for cosmetic reasons. Results: In all cases, there were evident periocular differences between the treated eye and the fellow eye, consisting mainly of deepening of the upper eyelid sulcus and eyelid fat pad reduction. One year after discontinuing the PGA eye drops, improvement of these features was observed. Conclusion: Clinicians and patients should be aware of the side effects of topical PGA therapy on periorbital tissues, and that these side effects can partially regress after discontinuation of the medication. Various immunopathological events characterize the systemic acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. Moreover, it has been reported that coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination and infection by SARS-CoV-2 induce humoral immunity mediated by B-cell-derived antibodies and cellular immunity mediated by T cells and memory B cells. Immunoglobulins, cytokines, and chemokines play an important role in shaping immunity in response to infection and vaccination. Furthermore, different vaccines have been developed to prevent COVID-19. Therefore, this research aimed to analyze and compare Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectra of vaccinated people with a positive (V-COVID-19 group) or negative (V-Healthy group) real-time quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) test, evaluating the immunoglobulin and cytokine content as an immunological response through FTIR spectroscopy. Most individuals that integrated the V-Healthy group (88.1%) were asymptomatic; on the contrary, only 28% of the V-COVID-19 group was asymptomatic. Likewise, 68% of the V-COVID-19 group had at least one coexisting illness. Regarding the immunological response analyzed through FTIR spectroscopy, the V-COVID-19 group showed a greater immunoglobulins G, A, and M (IgG, IgA, and IgM) content, as well as the analyzed cytokines interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-ɑ), and interleukins 1β, 6, and 10 (IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-10). In the Winter semester of 1925/26 Heidegger gave what appears to have been his first seminar on Hegel. Still unpublished in any form, this neglected seminar is of extraordinary importance, and not only for the in-depth and critical reading it pursues of Hegel's Logic I, a critique that charges Hegel with not knowing how or where to begin. The seminar is also important for its attempt to demonstrate that Hegel's philosophy was thoroughly Greek. In the class of 25 November 1925, Heidegger is reported to have said: "Therefore am I in the habit of saying that Hegel is the most radical Greek there ever was. Background: As AF-associated morbidity and mortality are increasing, there is an acute need for improved surveillance and prevention strategies to reduce the impact of AF and related strokes. Specific echocardiographic parameters that can best predict future onset of AF within 3 months are lacking.Methods: Twenty patients with AF, as identified by presence of ICD-9 diagnosis code, were compared with a control group of twenty age- and sex-matched patients selected from the same clinic population but without a diagnosis of AF. Transthoracic echocardiograms (TTE) obtained within 90 days prior to first documented AF episode (study group) or obtained closest to first clinic visit (control) were selected for review.Results: Baseline characteristics, including age, BMI, presence of hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, and heart failure were comparable. Increased left atrial (LA) size (end systolic major axis in 2-chamber view: AF 4.62±0.03 vs control 3.79±0.21, P =0.03), increased mitral inflow (E/A ratio: AF 1.35±0.15 vs control 1.06±0.07, P =0.04), and reduced LA global longitudinal strain (AF -2.69±0.26 vs control - 3.59±0.31, P =0.04) were most closely associated with AF compared with the control group. Multivariate logistic regression was used to develop predictive models for AF onset. A combination of imaging and traditional clinical risk factors was the best AF prediction model with AUC of 0.94, which greatly exceeds the current best predictors published. From these parameters, we developed the SMASH2 scoring system for 90- day AF risk estimation.Conclusions: Risk factors for AF and early features of atrial cardiomyopathy including male sex, hypertension, LA enlargement, reduced mitral inflow, and reduced LA strain are powerful predictors of AF onset within 90 days, and may be used to prognosticate future AF risk. Endomucin (EMCN) currently represents the only hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) marker expressed by both murine and human HSCs. Here, we report that EMCN+ long-term repopulating HSCs (LT-HSCs; CD150+CD48−LSK) have a higher long-term multi-lineage repopulating capacity compared to EMCN− LT-HSCs. Cell cycle analyses and transcriptional profiling demonstrated that EMCN+ LT-HSCs were more quiescent compared to EMCN− LT-HSCs. Emcn −/− and Emcn +/+ mice displayed comparable steady-state hematopoiesis, as well as frequencies, transcriptional programs, and long-term multi-lineage repopulating capacity of their LT-HSCs. Complementary functional analyses further revealed increased cell cycle entry upon treatment with 5-fluorouracil and reduced granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (GCSF) mobilization of Emcn −/− LT-HSCs, demonstrating that EMCN expression by LT-HSCs associates with quiescence in response to hematopoietic stress and is indispensable for effective LT-HSC mobilization. Transplantation of wild-type bone marrow cells into Emcn −/− or Emcn +/+ recipients demonstrated that EMCN is essential for endothelial cell-dependent maintenance/self-renewal of the LT-HSC pool and sustained blood cell production post-transplant. Background. Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy is a common adverse effect of chemotherapeutic treatment and is associated with decreased quality of life. The aim of this study was to evaluate the validity and reliability of the neurotoxicity subscale of the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy/Gynecologic Oncology Group-Neurotoxicity (FACT/GOG-Ntx) for the Chilean population. Methods. A cross-sectional study in which 101 participants with haematologic, colorectal, breast, gastric, gynaecological, and other types of cancer completed the FACT/GOG-Ntx. Content validity (n = 14 health professionals evaluated the subscale in four categories: test-retest reliability (n = 20 patients), dimensionality, internal consistency, and concurrent validity and discriminant validity. In all analyses, p < 0.05 was considered significant. Results. There was an agreement among the evaluators for all categories of the subscale (Kendall's coefficient, W = 0.4 , p < 0.01) and moderate to high intrarater reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.7 – 0.9). Of the 11 original items that make up the subscale, none was eliminated. The factor analysis generated four factors that represented 72.2% of the total variance. Cronbach's α was 0.8 for the 11 items. Women showed greater compromise in emotional well-being and neurotoxicity symptoms compared with men, and age was directly correlated with the questions 'I have difficulty hearing' (r = 0.2 , p = 0.019) and 'I feel a noise or buzzing in my ears' (r = 0.2 , p = 0.03). Conclusion. The Chilean version of the FACT/GOG-Ntx neurotoxicity subscale is a valid and reliable scale for evaluating neurotoxicity symptoms in adult cancer survivors in Latin America. Several reports have indicated that the thermal tolerance of Salmonella at low-water activity increases significantly, but information on the impact of diverse food matrices is still scarce. The goal of this research was to determine the kinetic parameters (decimal reduction time, D; time required for the first decimal reduction, δ) of thermal resistance of Salmonella in a previously cooked low water activity food. Commercial toasted oats cereal (TOC) was used as the food model, with or without sucrose (25%) addition. TOC samples were inoculated with 108 CFU/mL of a single strain of one of three Salmonella serovars (Agona, Tennessee, Typhimurium). TOC samples were ground and equilibrated to aw values of 0.11, 0.33 and 0.53, respectively. Ground TOC was heated at temperatures between 65 °C and 105 °C and viable counts were determined over time (depending on the temperature for up to 6 h). Death kinetic parameters were determined using linear and Weibull regression models. More than 70% of Weibull's adjusted regression coefficients ( R a d j 2 ) and only 38% of the linear model's R a d j 2 had values greater than 0.8. For all serovars, both D and δ values increased consistently at a 0.11 aw compared to 0.33 and 0.53. At 0.33 aw, the δ values for Typhimurium, Tennessee and Agona were 0.55, 1.01 and 2.87, respectively, at 85 °C, but these values increased to 65, 105 and 64 min, respectively, at 0.11 aw. At 100 °C, δ values were 0.9, 5.5 and 2.3 min, respectively, at 0.11 aw. The addition of sucrose resulted in a consistent reduction of eight out of nine δ values determined at 0.11 aw at 85, 95 and 100 °C, but this trend was not consistent at 0.33 and 0.53 aw. The Z values (increase of temperature required to decrease δ-value one log) were determined with modified δ values for a fixed β (a fitting parameter that describes the shape of the curve), and ranged between 8.9 °C and 13.4 °C; they were not influenced by aw, strain or sugar content. This article presents a critical review of the empirical literature on the use of CDSSs in breast cancer treatment decision-making. Three articles were included and two salient challenges identified in the design and research of CDSSs. First, there is a lack of standardisation in the tumour and patient factors and the health goals used to predict the benefit of different treatment options, as well as in the methods used for the evaluation of these. The main component of a cryptographic system that allows us to ensure its strength against attacks, is the substitution box. The strength of this component can be validated by various metrics, one of them being the nonlinearity. To this end, it is essential to develop a design for substitution boxes that allows us to guarantee compliance with this metric. In this work, we implemented a hybrid between the stochastic fractal search algorithm in conjunction with opposition-based learning. This design is supported by sequential model algorithm configuration for the proper parameters configuration. We obtained substitution boxes of high nonlinearity in comparison with other works based on metaheuristics and chaotic schemes. The proposed substitution box is evaluated using bijectivity, the strict avalanche criterion, nonlinearity, linear probability, differential probability and bit-independence criterion, which demonstrate the excellent performance of the proposed approach. Trans-sialidases (TS) are important constitutive macromolecules of the secretome present on the surface of Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi) that play a central role as a virulence factor in Chagas disease. These enzymes have been related to infectivity, escape from immune surveillance and pathogenesis exhibited by this protozoan parasite. In this work, atomic force microscopy (AFM)-based single molecule-force spectroscopy is implemented as a suitable technique for the detection and location of functional TS on the surface of extracellular vesicles (EVs) released by tissue-culture cell-derived trypomastigotes (Ex-TcT). For that purpose, AFM cantilevers with functionalized tips bearing the anti-TS monoclonal antibody mAb 39 as a sense biomolecule are engineered using a covalent chemical ligation based on vinyl sulfonate click chemistry; a reliable, simple and efficient methodology for the molecular recognition of TS using the antibody-antigen interaction. Measurements of the breakdown forces between anti-TS mAb 39 antibodies and EVs performed to elucidate adhesion and forces involved in the recognition events demonstrate that EVs isolated from tissue-culture cell-derived trypomastigotes of T. cruzi are enriched in TS. Additionally, a mapping of the TS binding sites with submicrometer-scale resolution is provided. Behavior is central to interactions with the environment and thus has significant consequences for individual fitness. Sexual selection and demographic processes have been shown to independently shape behavioral evolution. Although some studies have tested the simultaneous effects of these forces, no studies have investigated their interplay in behavioral evolution. We applied experimental evolution in the seed beetle Callosobruchus maculatus to investigate, for the first time, the interactive effects of sexual selection intensity (high [polygamy] vs. minimal [enforced monogamy]) and metapopulation structure (yes/no) on the evolution of movement activity, a crucial behavior involved in multiples functions (e.g., dispersal, predator avoidance, or resource acquisition) and thus, closely related to fitness. We found that the interactive effects of the selection regimes did not affect individual activity, which was assayed under two different environments (absence vs. presence of conspecific cues from both sexes). However, contrasting selection regimes led to sex‐ and context‐dependent divergence in activity. The relaxation of sexual selection favored an increase in female, but not male, movement activity that was consistent between environmental contexts. In contrast, selection associated with the presence/absence of metapopulation structure led to context‐dependent responses only in male activity. In environments containing cues from conspecifics, males from selection lines under population subdivision showed increased levels of activity compared to those assayed in an environment devoid of conspecifics cues, whereas the opposite was true for males from panmictic lines. Background: Group B Streptococcus (GBS) remains a leading cause of infant morbidity and mortality. A candidate vaccine targets 6 GBS serotypes, offering a potential alternative to intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis to reduce disease burden. However, our understanding of the contributions of specific capsule types to GBS colonization and disease remains limited.Methods: Using allelic exchange, we generated isogenic GBS strains differing only in the serotype-determining region in 2 genetic backgrounds, including the hypervirulent clonal complex (CC) 17. Using a murine model of vaginal cocolonization, we evaluated the roles of the presence of capsule and of expression of specific capsular types in GBS vaginal colonization fitness independent of other genetic factors.Results: Encapsulated wild-type strains COH1 (CC17, serotype III) and A909 (non-CC17, serotype Ia) outcompeted isogenic acapsular mutants in murine vaginal cocolonization. COH1 wild type outcompeted A909. Notably, expression of type Ia capsule conferred an advantage over type III capsule in both genetic backgrounds.Conclusions: Specific capsule types may provide an advantage in GBS vaginal colonization in vivo. However, success of certain GBS lineages, including CC17, likely involves both capsule and noncapsule genetic elements. Background: Prior studies have evaluated clinical characteristics associated with opioid dose requirements in hospitalized patients with acute pancreatitis (AP) but did not incorporate morphologic findings on CT imaging. Aims: We sought to determine whether morphologic severity on imaging is independently associated with opioid dose requirements in AP. Methods: Adult inpatients with a diagnosis of AP from 2006 to 2017 were reviewed. The highest modified CT severity index (MCTSI) score and the daily oral morphine equivalent (OME) for each patient over the first 7 days of hospitalization were used to grade the morphologic severity of AP and calculate mean OME per day(s) of treatment (MOME), respectively. Multiple regression analysis was used to evaluate the association of MOME with MCSTI. Results: There were 249 patients with AP, of whom 196 underwent contrast-enhanced CT. The mean age was 46 ± 13.6 years, 57.9% were male, and 60% were black. The mean MOME for the patient cohort was 60 ± 52.8 mg/day. MCTSI (β = 3.5 [95% CI 0.3, 6.7], p = 0.03), early hemoconcentration (β = 21 [95% CI 4.6, 39], p = 0.01) and first episode of AP (β = − 17 [95% CI − 32, − 2.7], p = 0.027) were independently associated with MOME. Among the 19 patients undergoing ≥ 2 CT scans, no significant differences in MOME were seen between those whose MCTSI score increased (n = 12) versus decreased/remained the same (n = 7). Conclusion: The morphologic severity of AP positively correlated with opioid dose requirements. We describe a case of Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease exacerbation after COVID-19 vaccination. A 46-year-old woman presented with a bilateral granulomatous uveitis 2 days after the first dose of COVID-19 mRNA vaccine (Comirnaty, Pfizer-BioNTech), and was diagnosed with a complete Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease 4 days after receiving the second dose of the vaccine. Three weeks before the first dose, she had been consulted for blurred vision and mild headaches. The case resolved with high dose intravenous corticosteroids, followed by oral prednisone. The close temporal relationship between the COVID-19 vaccine doses and the worsening of VKH symptoms strongly suggests COVID-19 vaccination as the trigger of its exacerbation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The expected growth of the global economy and the projected rise in world population call for a greatly increased supply of materials critical for implementing clean technologies, such as rare earth elements (REEs) and other rare metals. Because the demand for critical metals is increasing and land-based mineral deposits are being depleted, seafloor resources are seen as the next frontier for mineral exploration and extraction. Marine mineral deposits with a great resource potential for transition, rare, and critical metals include mainly deep-sea mineral deposits, such as polymetallic sulfides, polymetallic nodules, cobalt-rich crusts, phosphorites, and rare earth element-rich muds. Major areas with economic interest for seabed mineral exploration and mining are the following: nodules in the Penrhyn Basin-Cook Islands Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), the Clarion–Clipperton nodule Zone, Peru Basin nodules, and the Central Indian Ocean Basin; seafloor massive sulfide deposits in the exclusive economic zones of Papua New Guinea, Japan, and New Zealand as well as the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and the three Indian Ocean spreading ridges; cobalt-rich crusts in the Pacific Prime Crust Zone and the Canary Islands Seamounts and the Rio Grande Rise in the Atlantic Ocean; and the rare earth element-rich deep-sea muds around Minamitorishima Island in the equatorial North Pacific. In addition, zones for marine phosphorites exploration are located in Chatham Rise, offshore Baja California, and on the shelf off Namibia. Moreover, shallow-water resources, like placer deposits, represent another marine source for many critical minerals, metals, and gems. The main concerns of deep-sea mining are related to its environmental impacts. Ecological impacts of rare earth element mining on deep-sea ecosystems are still poorly evaluated. Furthermore, marine mining may cause conflicts with various stakeholders such as fisheries, communications cable owners, offshore wind farms, and tourism. The global ocean is an immense source of food, energy, raw materials, clean water, and ecosystem services and suffers seriously by multiple stressors from anthropogenic sources. The development of a blue economy strategy needs a better knowledge of the environmental impacts. By protecting vulnerable areas, applying new technologies for deep-sea mineral exploration and mining, marine spatial planning, and a regulatory framework for minerals extraction, we may achieve sustainable management and use of our oceans. Effective testing is essential to control the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) transmission. Here we report a-proof-of-concept study on hyperspectral image analysis in the visible and near-infrared range for primary screening at the point-of-care of SARS-CoV-2. We apply spectral feature descriptors, partial least square-discriminant analysis, and artificial intelligence to extract information from optical diffuse reflectance measurements from 5 µL fluid samples at pixel, droplet, and patient levels. We discern preparations of engineered lentiviral particles pseudotyped with the spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 from those with the G protein of the vesicular stomatitis virus in saline solution and artificial saliva. We report a quantitative analysis of 72 samples of nasopharyngeal exudate in a range of SARS-CoV-2 viral loads, and a descriptive study of another 32 fresh human saliva samples. Sensitivity for classification of exudates was 100% with peak specificity of 87.5% for discernment from PCR-negative but symptomatic cases. Proposed technology is reagent-free, fast, and scalable, and could substantially reduce the number of molecular tests currently required for COVID-19 mass screening strategies even in resource-limited settings.
