Background Research suggests that effort-cost decision-making (ECDM), the estimation of work required to obtain reward, may be a relevant framework for understanding motivational impairment in psychotic and mood pathology. Specifically, research has suggested that people with psychotic and mood pathology experience effort as more costly than controls, and thus pursue effortful goals less frequently. This study examined ECDM across psychotic and mood pathology. Hypothesis We hypothesized that patient groups would show reduced willingness to expend effort compared to controls. Study Design People with schizophrenia (N  = 33), schizoaffective disorder (N  = 28), bipolar disorder (N  = 39), major depressive disorder (N  = 40), and controls (N  = 70) completed a physical ECDM task. Participants decided between completing a low-effort or high-effort option for small or larger rewards, respectively. Reward magnitude, reward probability, and effort magnitude varied trial-by-trial. Data were analyzed using standard and hierarchical logistic regression analyses to assess the subject-specific contribution of various factors to choice. Negative symptoms were measured with a clinician-rated interview. Study Results There was a significant effect of group, driven by reduced choice of high-effort options in schizophrenia. Hierarchical logistic regression revealed that reduced choice of high-effort options in schizophrenia was driven by weaker contributions of probability information. Use of reward information was inversely associated with motivational impairment in schizophrenia. Surprisingly, individuals with major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder did not differ from controls. Conclusions Our results provide support for ECDM deficits in schizophrenia. Additionally, differences between groups in ECDM suggest a seemingly similar behavioral phenotype, reduced motivation, could arise from disparate mechanisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Hypotheses Auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) are central features of schizophrenia (SZ). However, AVH also occur in a small percentage of the general population who do not have a need for care, termed nonclinical voice hearers (NCVH). We sought to determine the degree to which the experience of AVH was similar in NCVH and in people with schizophrenia (PSZ) and evaluate the degree to which NCVH shared other features of SZ such as delusional beliefs, cognitive impairment, and negative symptoms. Study Design We recruited 76 people with a DSM-V diagnosis of SZ/schizoaffective disorder (PSZ; 49 with current AVH, 27 without), 48 NCVH, and 51 healthy controls. Participants received a broad battery of clinician-administered and self-report symptom assessments and a focused cognitive assessment. Study Results The AVH of NCVH and PSZ shared very similar sensory features. NCVH experienced less distress, had greater control over their AVH, and, unlike PSZ, rarely heard 2 voices speaking to each other. NCVH demonstrated a wide range of deeply held unusual beliefs, but reported less paranoia, and fewer first-rank symptoms such as passivity and alterations in self-experience. NCVH showed no evidence of cognitive deficits or negative symptoms. Conclusions The AVH in NCVH and PSZ demonstrate important similarities as well as clear differences. Specific features, rather than the presence, of AVH appear to determine the need for care. NCVH do not share the cognitive and motivational deficits seen in PSZ. In this paper, we provide guidance for the organization and implementation of EEG studies. This work was inspired by our experience conducting a large‐scale, multi‐site study, but many elements could be applied to any EEG project. Section 1 focuses on study activities that take place before data collection begins. Topics covered include: establishing and training study teams, considerations for task design and piloting, setting up equipment and software, development of formal protocol documents, and planning communication strategy with all study team members. Section 2 focuses on what to do once data collection has already begun. Topics covered include: (1) how to effectively monitor and maintain EEG data quality, (2) how to ensure consistent implementation of experimental protocols, and (3) how to develop rigorous preprocessing procedures that are feasible for use in a large‐scale study. Large‐scale EEG studies are desirable given their statistical power and generalizability; however, their preparation and implementation are a non‐trivial challenge. One of the proposed neural mechanisms involved in working memory is coupling between the theta phase and gamma amplitude. For example, evidence from intracranial recordings shows that coupling between hippocampal theta and cortical gamma oscillations increases selectively during working memory tasks. Theta-gamma phase-amplitude coupling can also be measured non-invasively through scalp EEG; however, EEG can only assess coupling within cortical areas, and it is not yet clear if this cortical-only coupling is truly memory-specific, or a more general phenomenon. We tested this directly by measuring cortical coupling during three different conditions: a working memory task, an attention task, and a passive perception condition. We find similar levels of theta-gamma coupling in all three conditions, suggesting that cortical theta-gamma phase-amplitude coupling is not a memory-specific signal, but instead reflects some other attentional or perceptual processes. Background and Hypothesis Hallucinations may be driven by an excessive influence of prior expectations on current experience. Initial work has supported that contention and implicated the anterior insula in the weighting of prior beliefs. Study Design Here we induce hallucinated tones by associating tones with the presentation of a visual cue. We find that people with schizophrenia who hear voices are more prone to the effect and using computational modeling we show they overweight their prior beliefs. In the same participants, we also measured glutamate levels in anterior insula, anterior cingulate, dorsolateral prefrontal, and auditory cortices, using magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Study Results We found a negative relationship between prior-overweighting and glutamate levels in the insula that was not present for any of the other voxels or parameters. Conclusions Through computational psychiatry, we bridge a pathophysiological theory of psychosis (glutamate hypofunction) with a cognitive model of hallucinations (prior-overweighting) with implications for the development of new treatments for hallucinations. Importance: Recent accounts suggest that delusions and hallucinations may result from alterations in how prior knowledge is integrated with new information, but experimental evidence supporting this idea has been complex and inconsistent. Evidence from a simpler perceptual task would make clear whether psychotic symptoms are associated with overreliance on prior information and impaired updating.Objective: To investigate whether individuals with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder (PSZ) and healthy control individuals (HCs) differ in the ability to update their beliefs based on evidence in a relatively simple perceptual paradigm.Design, Setting, and Participants: This case-control study included individuals who met DSM-IV criteria for PSZ and matched HC participants in 2 independent samples. The PSZ group was recruited from the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center, Yale University, and community clinics, and the HC group was recruited from the community. To test perceptual updating, a random dot kinematogram paradigm was implemented in which dots moving coherently in a single direction were mixed with randomly moving dots. On 50% of trials, the direction of coherent motion changed by 90° midway through the trial. Participants were asked to report the direction perceived at the end of the trial. The Peters Delusions Inventory and Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) were used to quantify the severity of positive symptoms. Data were collected from September 2018 to March 2020 and were analyzed from approximately March 2020 to March 2021.Main Outcomes and Measures: Critical measures included the proportion of responses centered around the initial direction vs the subsequent changed direction and the overall precision of motion perception and reaction times.Results: A total of 48 participants were included in the PSZ group (31 [65%] male; mean [SD] age, 36.56 [9.76] years) and 36 in the HC group (22 [61%] male; mean [SD] age, 35.67 [10.74] years) in the original sample. An independent replication sample included 42 participants in the PSZ group (29 [69%] male; mean [SD] age, 33.98 [11.03] years) and 34 in the HC group (20 [59%] male; mean [SD] age, 34.29 [10.44] years). In line with previous research, patients with PSZ were less precise and had slower reaction times overall. The key finding was that patients with PSZ were significantly more likely (original sample: mean, 27.88 [95% CI, 24.19-31.57]; replication sample: mean, 26.70 [95% CI, 23.53-29.87]) than HC participants (original sample: mean, 18.86 [95% CI, 16.56-21.16]; replication sample: mean, 15.67 [95% CI, 12.61-18.73]) to report the initial motion direction rather than the final one. Moreover, the tendency to report the direction of initial motion correlated with the degree of conviction on the Peters Delusions Inventory (original sample: r = 0.32 [P = .05]; replication sample: r = 0.30 [P = .05]) and the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale Reality Distortion score (original sample: r = 0.55 [P = .001]; replication sample: r = 0.35 [P = .03]) and severity of hallucinations (original sample: r = 0.39 [P = .02]; replication sample: r = 0.30 [P = .05]).Conclusions and Relevance: The findings of this case-control study suggest that the severity of psychotic symptoms is associated with a tendency to overweight initial information over incoming sensory evidence. These results are consistent with predictive coding accounts of the origins of positive symptoms and suggest that deficits in very elementary perceptual updating may be a critical mechanism in psychosis. People with schizophrenia exhibit increased intra-individual variability in both behavioral and neural signatures of cognition. Examination of intra-individual variability may uncover a unique functionally relevant aspect of impairment that is not captured by typical between-group comparisons of mean or median values. We and others have observed that retinal activity measured using electroretinography (ERG) is significantly reduced in people with schizophrenia; however, it is currently unclear whether greater intra-individual variability in the retinal response can also be observed. To investigate this, we examined intra-individual variability from 25 individuals with schizophrenia and 24 healthy controls under two fERG conditions: (1) a light-adapted condition in which schizophrenia patients demonstrated reduced amplitudes; and (2) a dark-adapted condition in which the groups did not differ in amplitudes. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) were generated to measure intra-individual variability for each subject, reflecting the consistency of activation values (in μv) across all sampling points (at a 2 kHz sampling rate) within all trials within a condition. Contrary to our predictions, results indicated that the schizophrenia and healthy control groups did not differ in intra-individual variability in fERG responses in either the light- or dark-adapted conditions. This finding remained consistent when variability was calculated as the standard deviation (SD) and coefficient of variation (CV) of maximum positive and negative microvolt values within the a- and b-wave time windows. This suggests that although elevated variability in schizophrenia may be observed at perceptual and cognitive levels of processing, it is not present in the earliest stages of sensory processing in vision. Many post-lingually deafened cochlear implant (CI) users report that they no longer enjoy listening to music, which could possibly contribute to a perceived reduction in quality of life. One aspect of music perception, vocal timbre perception, may be difficult for CI users because they may not be able to use the same timbral cues available to normal hearing listeners. Vocal tract resonance frequencies have been shown to provide perceptual cues to voice categories such as baritone, tenor, mezzo-soprano, and soprano, while changes in glottal source spectral slope are believed to be related to perception of vocal quality dimensions such as fluty vs. brassy. As a first step toward understanding vocal timbre perception in CI users, we employed an 8-channel noise-band vocoder to test how vocoding can alter the timbral perception of female synthetic sung vowels across pitches. Non-vocoded and vocoded stimuli were synthesized with vibrato using 3 excitation source spectral slopes and 3 vocal tract transfer functions (mezzo-soprano, intermediate, soprano) at the pitches C4, B4, and F5. Six multi-dimensional scaling experiments were conducted: C4 not vocoded, C4 vocoded, B4 not vocoded, B4 vocoded, F5 not vocoded, and F5 vocoded. At the pitch C4, for both non-vocoded and vocoded conditions, dimension 1 grouped stimuli according to voice category and was most strongly predicted by spectral centroid from 0 to 2 kHz. While dimension 2 grouped stimuli according to excitation source spectral slope, it was organized slightly differently and predicted by different acoustic parameters in the non-vocoded and vocoded conditions. For pitches B4 and F5 spectral centroid from 0 to 2 kHz most strongly predicted dimension 1. However, while dimension 1 separated all 3 voice categories in the vocoded condition, dimension 1 only separated the soprano stimuli from the intermediate and mezzo-soprano stimuli in the non-vocoded condition. Research has shown that inflammatory processes affect brain function and behavior through several neuroimmune pathways. However, high order brain functions affected by inflammation largely remain to be defined. Resting state functional connectivity of synchronized oscillatory activity is a valid approach to understand network processing and high order brain function under different experimental conditions. In the present study multi-electrode EEG recording in awake, freely moving rats was used to study resting state connectivity after administration of lipopolysaccharides (LPS). Male Wistar rats were implanted with 10 cortical surface electrodes and administered with LPS (2 mg/kg) and monitored for symptoms of sickness at 3, 6 and 24 h. Resting state connectivity and power were computed at baseline, 6 and 24 h. Three prominent connectivity bands were identified using a method resistant to spurious correlation: alpha (5–15 Hz), beta-gamma (20–80 Hz), and high frequency oscillation (150–200 Hz). The most prominent connectivity band, alpha, was strongly reduced 6 h after LPS administration, and returned to baseline at 24 h. Beta-gamma connectivity was also reduced at 6 h and remained reduced at 24 h. Interestingly, high frequency oscillation connectivity remained unchanged at 6 h and was impaired 24 h after LPS challenge. Expected elevations in delta and theta power were observed at 6 h after LPS administration, when behavioral symptoms of sickness were maximal. Notably, gamma and high frequency power were reduced 6 h after LPS and returned to baseline by 24 h, when the effects on connectivity were more evident. Finally, increases in cross-frequency coupling elicited by LPS were detected at 6 h for theta-gamma and at 24 h for theta-high frequency oscillations. These studies show that LPS challenge profoundly affects EEG connectivity across all identified bands in a time-dependent manner indicating that inflammatory processes disrupt both bottom-up and top-down communication across the cortex during the peak and resolution of inflammation. The cognitive impairments associated with schizophrenia have long been known to involve deficits in working memory (WM) capacity. To date, however, the causes of WM capacity deficits remain unknown. The present study examined selective attention impairments as a putative contributor to observed capacity deficits in this population. To test this hypothesis, we used an experimental paradigm that assesses the role of selective attention in WM encoding and has been shown to involve the prefrontal cortex and the basal ganglia. In experiment 1, participants were required to remember the locations of 3 or 5 target items (red circles). In another condition, 3-target items were accompanied by 2 distractor items (yellow circles), which participants were instructed to ignore. People with schizophrenia (PSZ) exhibited significant impairment in memory for the locations of target items, consistent with reduced WM capacity, but PSZ and healthy control subjects did not differ in their ability to filter the distractors. This pattern was replicated in experiment 2 for distractors that were more salient. Taken together, these results demonstrate that reduced WM capacity in PSZ is not attributable to a failure of filtering irrelevant distractors. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Intrinsically driven neural activity generated at rest exhibits complex spatiotempora dynamics characterized by patterns of synchronization across distant brain regions Mounting evidence suggests that these patterns exhibit fluctuations and nonstationarit at multiple time scales. Resting-state electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings wer examined in 12 young adults for changes in synchronization patterns on a fast time scal in the range of tens to hundreds of milliseconds. Results revealed that EEG dynamic continuously underwent rapid transitions between intermittently stable states. Numerou approximate recurrences of states were observed within single recording epochs, acros different epochs separated by longer times, and between participants. For broadban (4-30 Hz) data, a majority of states could be grouped into three families, suggesting th existence of a limited repertoire of core states that is continually revisited and share across participants. Our results document the existence of fast synchronization dynamic iterating amongst a small set of core networks in the resting brain, complementin earlier findings of nonstationary dynamics in electromagnetic recordings and transien EEG microstates. Rationale: Previous work in humans has shown that chronic cannabis users exhibit disruptions in classical eyeblink conditioning (EBC), a form of associative learning that is known to be dependent on the cerebellum. Based upon previous work in animals, it was hypothesized that these learning deficits were related to cannabinoid receptor (CB1R) downregulation. However, it remains unclear whether there is a recovery of cerebellum-dependent learning after the cessation of cannabis use. Methods: Therefore, former cannabis users ( n=10), current cannabis users ( n=10), and cannabis-naïve controls ( n=10), all free of DSM-IV Axis-I or -II disorders, were evaluated. A standard delay EBC procedure was utilized in which paired presentations of a conditioned stimulus (CS; e.g., tone) and a co-terminating unconditioned stimulus (US; e.g., ocular airpuff) were administered, thus eliciting a conditioned eyeblink response (CR). The primary dependent measures were percentage of CRs and CR latency across conditioning blocks. Results: Similar to prior studies, current cannabis users exhibited marked impairments in both the acquisition and timing of CRs compared to controls. Although former cannabis users showed intact CR acquisition compared to controls, they exhibited significantly impaired (shorter) CR latencies. In both cannabis groups, UR amplitude did not differ from controls, indicating normal US processing. Conclusions: These data suggest that a recovery of function has occurred for the learning of the CS-US association, while the accurate timing of the CR shows lasting impairments. Taken together, these results suggest that heavy cannabis use can disrupt timing-related synaptic plasticity within the cerebellum, even after the cessation of cannabis use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Contemporary sensory gating definitions are generally tied to the perceptual and attentional phenomenology described by McGhie and Chapman, including abnormalities in the quality of sensory input, heightened awareness of background noises, and poor selective attention reported by individuals with schizophrenia. Despite these explicit phenomenological origins, little is known about the experiential phenomena underlying contemporary operationalizations of the sensory gating construct, such as whether the construct is restricted to experiences associated with the modulation of sensory percepts includes selective attention and distractibility or even whether the construct is accessible via self-report. Because clarification of these issues has important implications for the development and testing of psychological theories and the study of psychopathology, a series of studies was conducted to (a) empirically identify the major dimensions of sensory gating-like perceptual and attentional phenomenology in healthy young adults and (b) develop a psychometrically sound self-report rating scale to capture these dimensions, the Sensory Gating Inventory (SGI). Factor analyses of Likert items measuring a broad range of sensory gating-like subjective experiences revealed 1 primary factor that encompassed anomalies of perceptual modulation (eg, perceptions of heightened stimulus sensitivity and sensory inundation) and 3 other factors measuring disturbances in the processes of focal and radial attention as well as exacerbation of sensory gating- like anomalies by fatigue and stress. Psychometrically, the SGI demonstrated strong reliability and validity. Objectives. Deficits in metacognition, or the ability to think about thinking, are common in schizophrenia and associated with functional impairment. Unknown are what elements of function are affected by what aspects of metacognition. Design. This study explored whether participants with differing capacities for Mastery, a domain of metacognition that reflects the ability to use knowledge about mental states to respond to psychological challenges, had difficulties in different elements of daily function. Methods. Participants were 98 adults with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder in a non-acute phase, classified into three groups on the basis of ratings of their capacity for metacognitive Mastery using the Metacognitive Assessment Scale: low Mastery (those unable to plausibly represent psychological challenges), Intermediate Mastery (those able to plausibly represent psychological problems but cope primarily through passive measures or avoidance), and high Mastery (those able to cope with plausible problems through cognitive means). Participants completed assessments of coping preference, insight, self-esteem, and anxiety. Results. Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) revealed that the high-Mastery group had a greater preference for coping with stressors by thinking and talking about them, and greater insight than all other groups, and higher levels of feeling accepted by peers than the intermediate-Mastery group. The intermediate-Mastery group reported higher levels of resignation when facing stressors and more social phobia than the other two groups. These findings of Mastery group differences in self-esteem and anxiety persisted when neurocognition was controlled for in an Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA). Conclusions. Timbre is typically investigated as a perceptual attribute that differentiates instruments at one pitch. Yet the perceptual usefulness of timbre is that it allows listeners to recognize one instrument at different pitches. Using stimuli produced across the playing range by three wind instruments from two categories, woodwind and brass, we measured listeners' judgments of instrumental timbre across pitch in a dissimilarity task and measured listeners' ability to identify stimuli as being produced by the same or different instrument in a three-note oddball task. The resulting multidimensional scaling representation showed that Dimension 1 correlated with pitch, whereas Dimension 2 correlated with spectral centroid and separated the instrumental stimuli into the categories woodwind and brass. For three-note sequences, the task was extremely difficult for the woodwind pair, with listeners typically choosing the most dissimilarly pitched stimulus as coming from the oddball source. In contrast, the three-note sequences were easy for the woodwind-brass pairs. The results from these experiments illustrate the difficulty of extrapolating the timbre of a sound source across large differences in pitch. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Clients with adductor spasmodic dysphonia (ADSD) tend to exhibit inter- and intraclient variability of signs and symptoms. This variability may result in inaccurate assessment of severity. Accurate assessment of severity requires knowledge concerning the factors that affect the expression of ADSD signs and symptoms. This study examined ADSD sign expression as a function of voicing and syntactic complexity. Fifteen ADSD participants and 15 control participants completed a task consisting of 30 sentences. ADSD signs were significantly more frequent in predominantly voiced sentences than in predominantly voiceless sentences, regardless of level of syntactic complexity. Center-embedded sentences comprising predominantly voiced consonants were found to evoke the greatest number of ADSD signs. These results have important implications for the assessment of ADSD. The powerful techniques of covariance structure modeling (CSM) long have been used to study complex behavioral phenomenon in the social and behavioral sciences. This study employed these same techniques to examine simultaneous effects on vowel duration in American English. Additionally, this study investigated whether a single population model of vowel duration fits observed data better than a dual population model where separate parameters are generated for syllables that carry large information loads and for syllables that specify linguistic relationships. For the single population model, intrinsic duration, phrase final position, lexical stress, post-vocalic consonant voicing, and position in word all were significant predictors of vowel duration. However, the dual population model, in which separate model parameters were generated for (1) monosyllabic content words and lexically stressed syllables and (2) monosyllabic function words and lexically unstressed syllables, fit the data better than the single population model. Intrinsic duration and phrase final position affected duration similarly for both the populations. On the other hand, the effects of post-vocalic consonant voicing and position in word, while significant predictors of vowel duration in content words and stressed syllables, were not significant predictors of vowel duration in function words or unstressed syllables. These results are not unexpected, based on previous research, and suggest that covariance structure analysis can be used as a complementary technique in linguistic and phonetic research. © 2000 Acoustical Society of America. The authors' objective was to review previous studies of immediate (first 30 seconds) and stabilized (30 seconds to 20 minutes) hemodynamic responses of healthy adults to the head-up posture, with particular reference to alteration of such responses in the elderly and the usefulness of such data in the diagnosis of orthostatic hypotension. The immediate response in healthy young adults is characterized by a prompt rise in heart rate, which peaks at about 8 to 15 seconds and then tapers; the arterial pressure and total vascular resistance decrease sharply at 5 to 10 seconds, followed by a rapid rebound and overshoot. Over the first 30 seconds there is a steady parallel decline of thoracic blood volume and stroke volume; there is also an initial surge of cardiac output followed by a steady decrease. During the stabilized response (30 seconds to 20 minutes), the hemodynamic variables are relatively steady, showing average increases in heart rate of about 15 to 30%, in diastolic pressure of 10 to 15%, and in total vascular resistance of 30 to 40%; during the 5th to 20th minutes there are also decreases in thoracic blood volume averaging about 25 to 30%, in cardiac output 15 to 30%, and in pulse pressure about 5 to 10%. It is evident that in normal human subjects, assumption of the upright posture results in profound hemodynamic changes, most of them occurring during the first 30 seconds. In elderly subjects (aged 60-69 years), there are, in the upright posture, lesser increments of heart rate and diastolic pressure, but no significant differences from younger age groups in the response of thoracic blood volume, cardiac output or total vascular resistance. However, beginning at about age 75, there is an increasing incidence of orthostatic hypotension, which averages about 14 to 20% at age 75 and older. The tendency toward orthostatic hypotension in the elderly is due (1) to the structural and functional changes in the circulation itself, (2) to a decline in autonomic function, and (3) to a probable functional deficiency of the skeletal muscle pump. The authors believe that closer hemodynamic monitoring of orthostatic hypotension patients would considerably increase our understanding and aid in the diagnosis of this condition. Background Although people with schizophrenia (PSZ) exhibit robust and reliable reductions in visual working memory capacity compared to healthy control subjects (HCS), the mechanisms that give rise to this impairment are not yet known. Recently, we and others have reported evidence that event-related desynchronization within the alpha frequency band of the electroencephalogram (9–13 Hz; alpha-ERD) during the delay period of a visual working memory task is significantly associated with working memory capacity among HCS (Erickson et al. 2017). Importantly, we found that this signal is robustly impaired in PSZ; as a group, they exhibit substantially reduced alpha-ERD during working memory formation and maintenance (Cohen's d > 1.0). These observations implicate alpha-ERD impairment as a primary mechanism by which working memory is constrained in PSZ. However, it is not yet known at which stage of visual memory formation alpha-ERD emerge in PSZ. There are several sub-processes that support successful working memory, including perception, attention, consolidation, maintenance, and response selection. Impairment at any of these stages could be reflected in reduced alpha-ERD and lower working memory capacity estimates, but a typical working memory paradigm cannot distinguish between these stages of memory formation. Methods In the present study, we examined alpha-ERD in 8 PSZ and 8 HCS in three EEG tasks designed to isolate the following sub-processes of working memory, separately: perception (participants passively view a sample array), attention (participants view and attend to the sample array in search of a target color, but are not required to memorize the colors), and memory consolidation/maintenance (participants view, attend, and memorize colors from sample array). EEG was time-locked to the onset of the sample array in each of the three conditions, and time-frequency analysis was performed by convolving a Hanning-tapered three-cycle Morlet wavelet with the EEG from each channel. Power in the alpha frequency band (9–13 Hz) was then baseline corrected to the proportional change in post-stimulus power relative to the 1500 ms before the onset of the sample array on a logarithmic scale (dB). Results Consistent with previous findings (Erickson et al. in preparation), we observed that alpha-ERD was significantly larger when participants were asked to remember the sample array colors compared to when they were asked to passively perceive or attend to the items in both groups (F = 3.85; p < 0.05). Additionally, we also find preliminary evidence for a replication of previous findings that PSZ have reduced alpha-ERD in the memory condition compared to HCS (p = 0.06; Cohen's d = 1.02). Importantly, however, PSZ exhibit normal alpha-ERD in the perception and attention task conditions (p's = 0.84 and 0.12, respectively), indicating a specificity of alpha-ERD impairment to task conditions that require memory consolidation and storage. Discussion Taken together, these results suggest that the alpha-ERD impairment observed during visual working memory tasks do not reflect failure at early visual stages of perception and attention. Rather, it appears that alpha-ERD impairments only emerge during consolidation. Recent work investigating physiological mechanisms of working memory (WM) has revealed that modulation of alpha and beta frequency bands within the EEG plays a key role in WM storage. However, the nature of that role is unclear. In the present study, we examined event‐related desynchronization of alpha and beta (α/β‐ERD) elicited by visual tasks with and without a memory component to measure the impact of a WM demand on this electrophysiological marker. We recorded EEG from 60 healthy participants while they completed three variants on a typical change detection task: one in which participants passively viewed the sample array, passive (WM−); one in which participants viewed and attended the sample array in search of a target color but did not memorize the colors, active (WM−); and one in which participants encoded, attended to, and memorized the sample array, active (WM+). Replicating previous findings, we found that active (WM+) elicited robust α/β‐ERD in frontal and posterior electrode clusters and that α‐ERD was significantly associated with WM capacity. By contrast, α/β‐ERD was significantly smaller in the passive (WM−) and active (WM−) tasks, which did not consistently differ from one another. Furthermore, no such relationship was observed between WM capacity and desynchronization in the passive (WM−) or active (WM−) tasks. Taken together, these results suggest that α‐ERD during memory formation reflects a memory‐specific process such as consolidation or maintenance, rather than serving a generalized role in perceptual gating or engagement of attention. Recently, task‐related desynchronization of the alpha and beta within the EEG during visual working memory (WM) formation and maintenance has been linked to individual differences in WM capacity. Here, we demonstrate that alpha/beta desynchronization elicited by a visual WM task appears to support a memory‐specific cognitive subprocess (e.g., consolidation), rather than a subprocess that is necessary, but not sufficient, for successful memory storage (e.g., encoding). Background Because the retina is part of the central nervous system, and develops from the same tissue as the brain, changes in retinal functioning often parallel changes in brain function. Alterations in retinal functioning in several neurological disorders, and in schizophrenia, have been observed using flash electroretinography (fERG). Methods Flash ERG data, from both eyes and under both light- and dark-adapted conditions, were collected on 25 people with schizophrenia, 25 people with major depressive disorder (MDD), and 25 healthy controls in one study, and in separate groups of schizophrenia patients (ns >20 thus far) in two additional studies: one in which visual evoked potentials were recorded, and one in which cognitive functioning was assessed. Results Schizophrenia patients demonstrated reduced amplitudes on waveforms reflecting photoreceptor, bipolar cell, and ganglion cell activity, across multiple tests. The MDD group data closely resembled the control group data, despite the severity of depression in this group (most subjects were inpatients). ERG amplitudes and latencies were unrelated to depression severity in both patient groups but were related to increased negative symptoms in the schizophrenia group. We will also report on relationships between ERG data and VEP data, and on relationships between ERG data and aspects of cognition in schizophrenia. Conclusions Reduced signaling strength in the retina is a non-invasive indicator of CNS dysfunction in schizophrenia. Implications of relationships between ERG data and cortical response to visual stimuli, as well as cognition, will clarify the extent to which ERG data parallel, and can serve as a proxy for, aspects of brain function in the assessment of schizophrenia. This disparity can be understood in terms of the differences between the physical characteristics of the auditory signal (discrete excitations and resonances requiring many narrowly tuned receptors) and those of the visual signal (smooth daylight excitations and reflectances requiring only a few broadly tuned receptors).
